- 0:00Curiosity in the entrepreneur world is a really interesting
- 0:03thing because nobody really addresses it.
- 0:04I don't think many people talk about that aspect of
- 0:07entrepreneurism. That's what the seed is.
- 0:09Can I do this better? Or nobody's solving this
- 0:12problem. I want to go fix it.
- 0:21Hey everyone, welcome back. Most people think success comes
- 0:24from working hard, but what if it actually comes from thinking
- 0:28differently? My guest today took $5000 and
- 0:31build a six figure business serving over 1000 events through
- 0:35his company Intentional Espresso.
- 0:37But the real story isn't about coffee, it's about ownership,
- 0:40belief, and becoming more than before.
- 0:44Randy Metheny, welcome to More Than Before.
- 0:46So good to have you on. Yeah, thank you for having me.
- 0:49I'm excited to dive into your stories.
- 0:51You you originally grew up in the South, I mean southern,
- 0:56southern of Oregon, at least here in.
- 0:57California, a little like right over the border.
- 1:01So almost, almost in Oregon, almost in Oregon.
- 1:04So what was what was life like growing up for you?
- 1:08I lived my my first memories are living in a really small town in
- 1:12Northern California near Mount Lassen.
- 1:15And it was just a little tiny, kind of like logging community,
- 1:22you know, and a lot of retiree people up there.
- 1:24The beautiful lake of Lake Almanor is up there.
- 1:28So it's just a small town. We had Little League.
- 1:30I had little like my school was really small.
- 1:32My class size was 30. But and, and as a boy, we just
- 1:37rode our bikes everywhere. So it was pretty much open door.
- 1:40Nobody locked doors. It's not something you see
- 1:43around here anymore, but I do miss that aspect of it.
- 1:47We just roll around in packs on our BMX bikes and have fun.
- 1:51That's awesome. So what?
- 1:53What kind of child were you? I know you were the oldest
- 1:56between you and your brother, right?
- 1:58What were you like? The responsible one?
- 2:00Were you the adventurous one? The get into trouble one.
- 2:04I, I was the oldest, I was the really responsible one.
- 2:09Unfortunately, I grew up in a home with a mom that had an
- 2:12addiction problem. And so I had to step up a lot
- 2:15and take care of things. So that was kind of that I took
- 2:19that role really quick, which kind of transferred into my
- 2:22entrepreneur brain of just taking charge and doing stuff.
- 2:28But but luckily my my mom went into rehab, got clean and then
- 2:33we migrated out of California into Bend, OR and high school.
- 2:40That's. Beautiful.
- 2:41Yes. I, when I moved there, I was
- 2:43like, this is heaven. I love it here.
- 2:46There's Mount Bachelor, there's the rivers as the high desert.
- 2:49I'd still have my mountains. I got the Cascade Range.
- 2:52I was just. I loved it there.
- 2:55Yeah, yeah. But I, I grew up, yeah.
- 2:57The more responsible kid. I was the friend.
- 2:59I mean, I played Little League, I played soccer, played sports,
- 3:02but I was the the kid that always would look to make money.
- 3:05I was, like I said in a previous conversation, in the past, I was
- 3:10the guy that would the kid would knock on your door to mow your
- 3:12yard when we you we would be at 5000 elevation.
- 3:16So when the snow came, I'd knock on doors to the old people's
- 3:19houses and hey, can I shovel your driveway for a few bucks or
- 3:23your walkway? And they would be like, right,
- 3:25yeah, they have a lot of people wanted to support us kids.
- 3:28So I would I was always looking to make a buck and take care of
- 3:32people. So it's interesting because a
- 3:34lot of entrepreneurs that I meet, successful ones, they kind
- 3:38of have this curiosity about them.
- 3:40We don't talk about it a lot in terms of entrepreneurship, but
- 3:44there is a curiosity that comes with entrepreneurship, someone
- 3:47who has that mind of constantly trying to figure things out.
- 3:50Have you always been a curious person throughout your life or
- 3:53was that something that you developed later on in life?
- 3:56No, really to think about it, I kind of always been the curious
- 4:00kid. I was that kid that would show
- 4:03up just to anything and just like kind of I'd show up to
- 4:07church as I wasn't even going to as a kid and just go for potluck
- 4:11or whatever and just hang out and ask questions.
- 4:14And next thing they're like, who is this kid belong to his
- 4:16parents. Don't go here.
- 4:18Or after I I mowed, I got the idea of mowing my first yard
- 4:21when somebody's like, Hey, would you want to mow my yard?
- 4:23I'll pay you this. I was like, wait a minute, so I
- 4:27can ask more people to do this. And so I started asking, like,
- 4:30would you let me mow your yard? I mean, obviously today, because
- 4:33of insurance reasons, people probably wouldn't let some kid
- 4:35do their yard. But back then it was like, cool,
- 4:38this kid wants to make money. Even some of my teachers saw
- 4:41that happening. They were like, wow, you're the
- 4:43only kid that does that. And I didn't think anything of
- 4:46it. I just thought, well, this is a
- 4:48way I can have some money to go to the arcade or to buy toys or
- 4:52eat pizza without asking my mom for money, you know?
- 4:55Yeah. But yeah, I was always curious
- 4:57to like how things worked. How, how how do you get from A-Z
- 5:03and what does that look like? Yeah.
- 5:06That's always been kind of curious like that.
- 5:09I, I, I've kind of been similar within curiosity of like looking
- 5:14at I was, I was the kid that always took things apart.
- 5:17Can't say I always put it back together the right way, but I
- 5:19did take things apart as a child.
- 5:22But you know, there is this kind of interesting thing about the
- 5:25curiosity side of, of wanting to figure out how things work.
- 5:29And then for me at least, school was a struggle.
- 5:34It was, it wasn't something that I love to do.
- 5:36I didn't understand learning until much later on in life,
- 5:39even though I did the whole, you know, go through high school, go
- 5:41through college kind of thing. What was education like for you
- 5:44growing up? Were you, were you a good
- 5:46student? Did you love school?
- 5:47Did you hate skill school? What?
- 5:49What was what was your relationship with education?
- 5:52I'd say that for the most part, I liked school.
- 5:56I was slightly behind on a few things.
- 6:00Now as we look back, it was some, some definitely some ADHD
- 6:04and growing up in a home environment that I was in, there
- 6:08was a little bit of, you know, trauma and other issues to deal
- 6:11with, but I actually really liked being at school.
- 6:14It was fun and hanging out with kids.
- 6:17But yeah, it was a struggle. It was hard for me to read.
- 6:21I think I didn't really learn how to read until later in life.
- 6:24Like to actually sit down and read a book was really hard
- 6:27because my brain wouldn't be able to focus.
- 6:29I was off in the clouds. So my learning was usually hands
- 6:34on or later in life. My mom was clean for a little
- 6:38bit and brought me into homeschooling and 7th and 8th
- 6:42grade. And so she went and tailored my
- 6:44entire education around my learning style and brought in
- 6:47like things with more images and more just the way it was worded.
- 6:51I was like, oh, I understand this.
- 6:54And so when I went from one year state testing the next year to
- 6:57state, state testing, I dramatically improved one
- 7:01because it was more interesting and I was more curious and
- 7:03excited to learn about it. And I had a little bit different
- 7:06environment. I was self paid.
- 7:08So it was like, if you accomplish this by each day, you
- 7:10can be done and go hang out with your other homeschool friends in
- 7:13town. And I was like, oh, that's an
- 7:15incentive. I can be done by lunchtime and
- 7:17not do this all the way till 3:00.
- 7:19I'm, I'm game. So I learned how to like that's
- 7:23also an incentive. Some kids just need that.
- 7:26But yeah, that was it was not easy going through high school.
- 7:29I actually didn't graduate high school, but it was also a real
- 7:31struggle. I was all, I mean, I had like a
- 7:33credit or two away from graduating.
- 7:36And so I end up getting my GED later in life.
- 7:40But yeah, it was it was, it was tough.
- 7:42I just went straight into the workforce and yeah, just got got
- 7:47a job. And you were, you were 32 right
- 7:50when you went and got your GED. Yeah, I I had a really good
- 7:55friend. I was just chatting with him
- 7:56last night about this, that he, he chatted with me and one day
- 8:00he goes, well, where'd you go to college?
- 8:02I said, dude, I didn't go to college.
- 8:03He go what? I'm like, I didn't graduate high
- 8:05school. And he was like, what?
- 8:09I I he's like, I'm baffled. You do not come across you, you
- 8:12look like somebody has a bachelor's degree at something.
- 8:14I was like, no, he's like, did you?
- 8:17I'm like, yeah, I don't, I'm not that smart.
- 8:19I don't want to. He's like, you need to go to
- 8:21your GED. He's like this year, you're
- 8:22going to go, you need, you just kept pressing me, pressing me.
- 8:25He's like, you're going to be really shocked.
- 8:27You go in there in the prep course, you go to take it.
- 8:29You're going to be passing it just fine.
- 8:31He's like, I know you well enough.
- 8:33I've known him for like two or three years at a time.
- 8:35This was probably 15 years ago or more.
- 8:38And so I I did the prep course and and I went and took the
- 8:42tests and I was like, Oh my gosh, I actually did this really
- 8:46well. I was passing everything in
- 8:48honors level besides writing, but that's a whole other
- 8:51conversation. But yeah, it was, I was blown
- 8:55away. But I also realized that because
- 8:58of undiagnosed ADHDI started at that time just drinking black
- 9:02coffee in my life. Like I got really healthy.
- 9:04I was just drinking black coffee, only losing weight and
- 9:07just pure caffeine stimulant without sugar actually activated
- 9:11my brain and I was able to focus not knowing those connections.
- 9:16But I would just, you know, double shot or a little coffee
- 9:19in the morning in the middle of class, I'd pick up some coffee
- 9:23and like I was engaged and actually enjoy learning because
- 9:26my brain absorbed it. But yeah, I, I then I went
- 9:29straight into college for I got in three years in and then our
- 9:34daughter was born. So and that was, we had to make
- 9:37the decision. There's no way I could do
- 9:38college and work and help. Yeah, it was just too much.
- 9:42And so I pulled back and then ironically started a business.
- 9:45So it was like, OK, instead of going to college, let's start a
- 9:47business from scratch that I know nothing about.
- 9:52So that's that's how I do things.
- 9:54Just curious. I just jump in.
- 9:57You, you mentioned the not feeling like you were that smart
- 10:01and I, I can relate with that a lot too.
- 10:03I've never thought of myself as like the smartest person in the
- 10:06room or anything like that. I'm not, I'm not the guy that
- 10:08walks in, but hey, look at me, come and ask me a question.
- 10:11I'm like, hey, maybe you should go talk to that person over
- 10:13there. We, we all kind of grow up and
- 10:16there are certain things that we kind of pick up.
- 10:18There's baggage that we we take with us those beliefs that we
- 10:22have that we say, oh, well, you know, I'm not that smart, I'm
- 10:25not that good looking, I'm overweight.
- 10:27Fill in the blank of whatever that is.
- 10:30I'm curious, what were what were some of those limiting beliefs
- 10:33that you've had to release in order to become the person that
- 10:37you are today? I had realized that I'm the most
- 10:45critical person of myself and when I assume that everybody
- 10:48else was like going to criticize me for these like minute things
- 10:51that only I could see, I knew that wow, all the stuff doesn't
- 10:57matter anymore. Like why do I?
- 10:59Why am I focusing on these things and being self too
- 11:03self-conscious versus being self aware?
- 11:08And then I dove, well, this is later, but diving like a lot of
- 11:14this, a lot of the growth is once I started doing
- 11:16entrepreneurship and then reading books like from Jordan
- 11:18Peterson or there's a lot of other people I've read books
- 11:21about that just bloom like Brené Brown books like anything in the
- 11:25clinical psychology world, like helps me ride through that.
- 11:30But at the same time, I also have a faith in Jesus that also
- 11:34rode me through all of that. And it's not just that I went to
- 11:37church, become a good guy or whatever.
- 11:39It was like literal, like direct praying on my knees, like, hey,
- 11:43you need to help me through this.
- 11:44If you're real, show me. And through that, just certain
- 11:49people to start showing up in my life.
- 11:52And I was like, oh, and I have my wife show up in my life.
- 11:55All those things just, like all pulled together from that.
- 11:59But yeah, that's another crazy story.
- 12:02Yeah, I would love to dive into that sort because I think it's
- 12:04interesting, you know, as as a as a believer or someone who
- 12:08believes in Jesus, there's kind of this piece where, you know,
- 12:11we the world kind of preaches like you're good enough and you
- 12:13have everything that you need. And, and if you come from that
- 12:16place, then you don't need a savior.
- 12:18Don't you don't need Jesus if you have everything together, if
- 12:20you're smart enough, right? If you can make things happen
- 12:23and we'll the things into your life, right.
- 12:26But there is kind of this piece of if you get to a point in your
- 12:29life where you say, man, like, you know, my, my worst, like my
- 12:33best things are like, are rags, They're nothing good.
- 12:38And so you know, what makes me good is, well, it's, it's Jesus
- 12:42in me. It's Christ in me.
- 12:43It's, it's OK. It's him transforming me from
- 12:45the inside out. And I think that looks different
- 12:47from one person to the next. But I, I find it really
- 12:50interesting that all of a sudden things in your life started to
- 12:54take a change like, like your wife, like, I'd love for you to
- 12:57go to that story. Tell us more about that.
- 12:59Well, I mean, I'll even go back. So I didn't grow up in a
- 13:02Christian home. I didn't grow up.
- 13:04I, I would find myself in churches as a kid and going to
- 13:10church. I, I visited tons of different
- 13:12churches and there's certain ones I like more that are
- 13:14usually the charismatic church where kids are fun because
- 13:16there's music playing and fun piano.
- 13:18Back in the 80s and as those movements were happening, but
- 13:22later, later in life, I asked my mom, I said, mom, you never went
- 13:26to church. Why I was in church.
- 13:27She said, Hun, I, she was look really ashamed when I asked her.
- 13:30And I was like, what, what's going on?
- 13:33She's like, well, I sent you to these things because I wanted to
- 13:35use and I didn't want you on the House.
- 13:37And I was like, oh, isn't that ironic?
- 13:41You sent me to somebody that sent me to a place that's
- 13:44preaching hope and change in your life while you were
- 13:47destroying our family, you know, and your disease and what you
- 13:50were doing. So through that, like I, I, I
- 13:56mean, there was a moment before my mom got clean.
- 13:58That was like everything was falling apart when I had a
- 14:01grandma that lived in Bend. That's why I moved to Bend, that
- 14:03she would basically send a check to the local grocery store to
- 14:07have a credit account so I can buy groceries because we were
- 14:10getting to that point or even the welfare checks were
- 14:12disappearing. And so I, I think I got the
- 14:16point. Just like, God, please, like
- 14:18show yourself and I'm, you know, between middle school, high
- 14:23school, puberty, like all these emotions of the man that's
- 14:25hitting me, like just so much mess in my life and I'm just
- 14:29like, things need to change or I'm going to kill myself.
- 14:32Like I felt like this was like, I don't want to be here.
- 14:36So it's horrible. And then out of nowhere, my
- 14:39mom's like, I'm going to rehab and then I'm like, well, I'm
- 14:42moving to grandma's house had been because it's beautiful up
- 14:44there. And it didn't take too much, too
- 14:48much time until I found myself within a community of youth
- 14:52group community that was very similar to the one I grew up in.
- 14:55So I didn't feel like it was weird versus kids.
- 14:58You know, if you drop a kid in a group with a bunch of middle
- 15:00class put together Christian boys and girls, like they're
- 15:04going to feel odd. I don't, I don't relate to these
- 15:07people, but I was dropped into a youth group with a bunch of
- 15:09misfits like me and we all just like, I didn't know anything
- 15:13about Jesus at the time. I kind of just had a crush on
- 15:15the girl that invited me. So which is not my wife.
- 15:19She's this person still a really good friend of mine.
- 15:22But through that, like God basically revealed himself to me
- 15:27as a as like between my freshman sophomore year in high school
- 15:31and I was like, so like taken back by that and reminded, like,
- 15:35I've been here with you and I don't like what happened to you.
- 15:39I still love you and I've been trying to, I'm working so hard
- 15:42to get you closer to me. And it's just wild that that
- 15:47started there. And then, of course, you know,
- 15:50as at that life progressed, high school got hard world, the
- 15:56world's temptations, all that stuff of like, well, you know,
- 15:59the churchy thing and God's not real.
- 16:02And like all of this, all of the doubts and all of that stuff
- 16:06started creeping in. So like, I kind of walked away
- 16:09from things for a little bit, but I felt like I still need my
- 16:12foot in there. And then I came across this,
- 16:15this, this old guy that heard me saying, I need a job comes up to
- 16:19me in the car and he's like this, He's like, I'm sorry, this
- 16:21might sound weird, but like, I'm looking for somebody to, to work
- 16:24for me. And I'm like, who is this creepy
- 16:26old guy? And then he became like, he, he
- 16:28ended up becoming like a really like a, like a mentor dad to me
- 16:31for a little bit and took care of me.
- 16:33He was the greatest guy to hang out with.
- 16:35I was like, everybody thought it was weird at hanging out with,
- 16:37hanging out with him. But he pretty much treated me
- 16:40like a son that I never heard, like a dad I never had, you
- 16:42know, And he, he supported me. He taught me how to research
- 16:46study the Bible with questions and being curious.
- 16:51And then and then a little bit later after that, I ended up
- 16:54running into another person that I started working for and he
- 16:56became like a brother and taught me a ton of stuff about Jesus
- 17:00and was very patient with me. And then I then I moved to to
- 17:05Portland and that's where I met my wife.
- 17:10So you met? So you met your wife in
- 17:11Portland. How did you meet her?
- 17:13We it was like an online dating thing right when on landing
- 17:16dating was just slightly getting going and it was still kind of
- 17:20weird. And trust me, it was weird.
- 17:23I'm still weird. Yeah, this is some strange
- 17:25people on here. And now I can't imagine doing it
- 17:27now. The whole swiping that just I
- 17:29know it was already tough enough.
- 17:32I our our surfer nice circumstances.
- 17:35It was kind of like I went on some really interesting dates
- 17:39and I was like, man, I don't know.
- 17:40I I don't know if this is what I want to do.
- 17:42And then she messaged out of nowhere, something kind of
- 17:44silly. And I was like, you know what?
- 17:45I'll chat with this person. And then she goes, I don't, I
- 17:49don't really text a lot. And I, I'm like, I like to talk
- 17:52to people like in person, like I'm not into this.
- 17:54I was like, great, you like to communicate.
- 17:57You're real. And so I, I went down and met
- 18:03her for coffee one night and we sat on the bench and I'm sitting
- 18:08there staring at her talking, very intimidated because I
- 18:12already knew that she already had a degree.
- 18:14She had already been, you know, in different countries, like she
- 18:17had traveled. I'd never really traveled.
- 18:19She had way more experience in life, but she was just super
- 18:22sweet, like, just very strong, like in her presence, very
- 18:26intimidating. And I can hear God in my head
- 18:28saying, yeah, this is who you're going to marry.
- 18:31And I'm like, I just met her and this is terrifying.
- 18:36Like it's not one of those like, oh, this would be great.
- 18:39I'm going to marry this person. No, it felt like a very direct
- 18:42command in my head. And I'm like, no, no, no, no,
- 18:44no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. This is scary.
- 18:47This is super scary. What if I'm going to screw up?
- 18:49You know, I'm not perfect. You know, all the things that
- 18:52I've done in the past, I am not the greatest guy.
- 18:55I've done some things that I wish I could apologize to so
- 18:58many people over, you know, anything in life, everybody's
- 19:01hurt somebody at some place. And I was just like, no, I don't
- 19:04deserve this. Like, no, yeah, this is this is
- 19:07what's going to happen. We ended our hit conversation
- 19:11like, 2 AMI drove home. She went up to where she was
- 19:14living laid in bed. I said, God, I don't want to
- 19:17mess around. I just met this guy with a great
- 19:19connection. What?
- 19:21What is this? And he goes, you're going to
- 19:23marry this guy? She's like, what if he's an axe
- 19:26murderer? I was like when she told me this
- 19:29later. Like after we confess these
- 19:31things way later, you're like thanks.
- 19:33For thinking I was an axe, I was like.
- 19:35What? What if you're the axe murderer?
- 19:37Why doesn't that to be me? Why can't you be the axe
- 19:39murderer? What she's like, wow, just TV
- 19:42shows. But yeah.
- 19:44And that's, and that's that. That was the beginning of that.
- 19:47That was an interesting time for us.
- 19:52Yeah. It's it's it's held us together
- 19:54like, because marriage is not easy.
- 19:56No, it's held us together. When things are going sideways,
- 19:59I have to remember, hey, remember he said you're supposed
- 20:02to make this work, so you better go apologize or you figure
- 20:07things out because I'm going to work on her too.
- 20:08And then she'll be like, yeah, I'm sorry about that.
- 20:10I'm like, I'm sorry too. Even when it's like you got to
- 20:13take a breath and sit back and not escalate, you got to de
- 20:17escalate and let it cool off before you like get into hot
- 20:21topics and and you know, relationships and even in
- 20:24business, like relationships are hard no matter what you're in.
- 20:28Yeah, they really are. There's something that's really
- 20:31fascinating too about your story is so you hadn't travelled very
- 20:35much and then all of a sudden you go to Haiti.
- 20:36What? What brought you to Haiti?
- 20:40Oh, sheesh. Fast forward.
- 20:42So we, Katie and I, got married and we were attending a church.
- 20:46And that was during. And then that was the year Haiti
- 20:49had the big earthquake. Yeah.
- 20:51And I had never been on any type of trip or anything.
- 20:54And my heart's big and bleeding. It hurts his heart.
- 20:56You know, we're just big bleeding heart people.
- 20:58Like we want to help the world. And there was a call to go help.
- 21:01And this all the opportunities that first year weren't there.
- 21:05And then, which is funny because a lot of people tell you like
- 21:07when you get married, don't do any huge major things like go on
- 21:11mission trips or do something like just financially don't,
- 21:16don't immediately have a bunch of children or don't immediately
- 21:19buy, you know, huge changes because it will strain that
- 21:22relationship and you'll test yourself because all the
- 21:25decisions. But I thought a almost a year to
- 21:28the day of the earthquake, we ended up being able to go to on
- 21:32that trip. And that was my first, I mean, I
- 21:34think I went to Mexico once when I was younger with my grandma or
- 21:37something, but nothing like third world country or something
- 21:40where you're going to see some stuff that it's going to Rock
- 21:42You to the core. And we went down with an
- 21:45organization called Forward Edge, which Scott's pretty
- 21:48familiar with. And we're down in Carfu.
- 21:52We, we served that we helped do whatever they need us to do.
- 21:56And I, you know, I, I don't know if it was the adrenaline or the
- 22:02endorphins, but I felt like, man, we're coming back here in
- 22:05the future. I could feel it.
- 22:07And we just started praying about it.
- 22:09We get home and the call from another organization that we
- 22:14were volunteer with said, hey, we're thinking about basically
- 22:18taking over the finances of an orphanage there that's
- 22:21struggling. And to do fundraising.
- 22:24We need a team to go back to kind of get an assessment if
- 22:27this is something we can do, get to know the people on the
- 22:29ground, you know, just basically checking out everything.
- 22:34And so three or four months later, we're back in an airplane
- 22:38flying into Port-au-Prince with very little to no plan.
- 22:43And if you'd interview everybody that was on that team, we're all
- 22:45going to be honest. We went in not the smartest we
- 22:49there at the time, the Port-au-Prince airport was not
- 22:51finished fixed from the earthquake.
- 22:53And so we're dumped out into a basically a metal shed building
- 22:57that's their custom and then pushed right out to the street.
- 23:01And we didn't have transportation because our plane
- 23:03was five hours late and no way to communicate, no cell phone,
- 23:06no nothing. And one guy on our team, he had
- 23:11been to the village before, but one other time and knew the
- 23:14village name. And somehow we befriended some
- 23:16Haitian guys that a car that do like taxi work and we convinced
- 23:20them to drive us out there. Keep in mind that country is
- 23:23known to have kidnapping and a lot of things go sideways.
- 23:28Really. Quick for anybody with this kind
- 23:31of skin tone, but I think the way we just went in like with
- 23:35this old like, hey, we're let's get to know the guy we're
- 23:38chatting with, like we get any weird vibes or whatever, we're
- 23:41just going to be like, no thanks, we don't need your help.
- 23:43Well, because so we get in this rig and I'm like, I'm going to
- 23:46sit in the front seat with the guy because I want to make sure
- 23:49I could. I'm like, I want to wash his
- 23:50hands. What he's doing, who's talking
- 23:52to, even though they're speaking in Creole, I don't know any
- 23:54Creole. We make it out to that orphanage
- 23:58and we end up spending a week with the founder and hanging out
- 24:01the kids and sitting under a net and are sleeping under Nets and
- 24:05getting eaten alive. And and that began the journey
- 24:09of the next 7-8 years of our life.
- 24:11And that cut going back and forth in that country every six
- 24:13months. I mean, that's a, that's a huge
- 24:16chapter of your life to, to spend there and to experience so
- 24:21much of a different culture, because I, I don't, I don't
- 24:24think most people even get out of the country for even a week
- 24:28or two. And even if they do travel,
- 24:32they're traveling to like a resort.
- 24:33It's, it's, it's, you're not actually seeing the real
- 24:37country. You're not really experiencing
- 24:40the real culture, the people that are there as you, as you
- 24:44kind of think back and reflect on that.
- 24:45I, I love that you say, you know, there's, there are things
- 24:48that you experience when you go to a country like that, that
- 24:52rock your world and you're never the same.
- 24:55What do you recall from your time there that rocked your
- 24:58world? Maybe a couple things, but what
- 25:00do you recall that rocked your world, that really caused you to
- 25:03see really what you do and how you live your life differently
- 25:08today than maybe before going? I mean, definitely seeing
- 25:15poverty at a level that even when we see people on the
- 25:19streets here, like our homeless people, their poverty is like,
- 25:23I'm not discounting that because we do live in a country where we
- 25:26shouldn't. We don't need to have that.
- 25:28But when you go to somewhere like Haiti where poverty so much
- 25:32so there is no, there's not even a place to go get food for some
- 25:34kids and you could see their hair color changing and you're
- 25:38like this. It's so, so much poverty that
- 25:42you, your brains like, I want to fix this, but that's maybe the
- 25:46typical like, I don't want to be a white savior per SE, but you
- 25:48want to, you're everybody's compelled to want to help people
- 25:52And so you want to fix it in your brain.
- 25:53Just trying to wrap your head around it.
- 25:56It's just, it's just hard. You got to realize there's a lot
- 25:58of things you have no control over and letting go of like the
- 26:03little things. The country also taught me
- 26:06patience. If you know anything about
- 26:07Haitian island time and anybody watching that that's been there
- 26:10and or anybody that is Haitian watching that they know better.
- 26:14You just have to learn how to just put aside your own
- 26:17ambitions and go, hey, if they're going to show up,
- 26:18they're going to show up. I said 2:00.
- 26:20They show up at 5. You know, it's OK.
- 26:24But but another thing that Brock that showed me is once you get
- 26:30to know people, they're it's like it's hard to compare them
- 26:34to us. But in a way, the social
- 26:36structures are very similar to how we are.
- 26:38We are our community. You'll need somebody.
- 26:41It's like, yeah, I got I just got to go figure out how to make
- 26:43money to feed my kids, get them in school, take care of my
- 26:46house. And it's just like that's
- 26:48everybody wants to do is just take care of their family or
- 26:50tribe. In essence, it's like we're all
- 26:53doing that. We just do it differently.
- 26:55And then if the, the, the hospitality we received there
- 27:00was also great because like, if you're walking in a village and
- 27:05somebody wants to get to know you, they're inviting you in and
- 27:07like, try to like give you stuff that they should be giving away.
- 27:09But to them, it's like, it's my honor to give you say like some
- 27:13food that I cooked that I probably need to be eating, but
- 27:15I want you to eat. And like that, that just gives
- 27:18them some humanity of like, I'd get to do this for a guest,
- 27:22which they don't normally get to do that.
- 27:23And you, you can't say no. It's as hard as you want to say
- 27:26no. I had to train a lot of people.
- 27:27Like you just have to say yes because it brings them so much
- 27:31joy. We could figure out how to take
- 27:32care of him later, but let them have this moment.
- 27:37Seeing all that. It's like, OK, got to slow down
- 27:40people. We're all human.
- 27:41We disagree or agree like we're all human beings.
- 27:44And that's, and that comes to my faith.
- 27:45It's like there's not US versus them.
- 27:48It's we're all creation. We're all human beings.
- 27:51We're all from the same creator, no matter where our beliefs are.
- 27:54So we all just need to love each other as simple as that's out.
- 27:58But yeah, Haiti, yeah, Haiti. You know, I've, it broke my
- 28:04heart. I fell in love with it.
- 28:06Like, yeah, there's a lot of that there.
- 28:08You know, the ups and downs. We lost people we really loved
- 28:12for some tragic stuff that happened there over 7-8 years.
- 28:14Our original orphanage director, we had him come to stay with a
- 28:18few times he went, he also had a big heart.
- 28:20So he was driving to far off villages to help teach them
- 28:24basic like reading and writing and math, like a school, and
- 28:29then taking food to them. And on his way back, he had two
- 28:33of the teenage kids from orphanage helping him.
- 28:35He was going down a hill and I think his brakes went out.
- 28:38And if you know, if you know anything about Backcountry, it's
- 28:41if the roads are like this, there's nowhere to stop.
- 28:43Like your brakes are out, you're done.
- 28:45And so he rolled and he had a concussion and passed away.
- 28:49And that was that rocked all of us.
- 28:53So, yeah, losing, losing people there was tough because it
- 28:56happened too much. And so it just made you cherish
- 28:59your time with people more here than here.
- 29:02It's like you call 911 and he if there was nine on one services,
- 29:05he probably would have been saved, you know, but not there.
- 29:09It's just it's different there. You, you really have to cherish
- 29:12all the moments you have. It's interesting because when
- 29:15you live in the States, United States here, there's kind of
- 29:18like this, there's almost kind of like this blanket that you
- 29:21kind of almost feel like nothing, like nothing is so far
- 29:24out of reach that you couldn't get help, that you couldn't heal
- 29:27from something, you know. You know, you go to another
- 29:29country, you break your leg or you have a trauma happen.
- 29:36Most people don't always recover the way that you would here in
- 29:39the States. You know, it's funny because
- 29:41we've had stuff with like doctors and going to see doctors
- 29:44and you know, there's frustrating things that happen
- 29:46with a pharmacy or, you know, fill in the blank and alone.
- 29:50I was I was trying to remind my wife this last week was is like
- 29:53just think about the people that literally wait for months to see
- 29:57someone about something that they need immediate care for.
- 30:01And or it's something that's a simple fix like cholera.
- 30:05Yeah, they have like here we get anything like that, We have ways
- 30:09to get to get rid of dehydration.
- 30:11We can drink water, we have electrolytes and different
- 30:14things we can treat there. It's like it's, it's almost
- 30:17death. Yeah, it's, it's pretty tragic
- 30:20for little things like that or, or just clean drinking water
- 30:23that's not full of parasites or. Yeah, I was going to say.
- 30:25I was going to say even just like the smallest thing of
- 30:27water, like in another country of clean water.
- 30:31And yet, you know what's our problem here in the United?
- 30:33States, Well, my water's not flavored.
- 30:35My water's not flavored enough, right?
- 30:38It, it's not the, I don't like orange flavored water.
- 30:40I, I prefer strawberry or whatever.
- 30:43You know, it's it's interesting to think about even the most
- 30:46basic things, right? Yeah, our of this re entry is
- 30:50we'd spend like a week or so there.
- 30:52Anytime I came back into country and would go through customs and
- 30:56get back into the, the American life, it always was this culture
- 31:00shock of like, oh, it's all me, me, me.
- 31:02But how do I get what do I get? Everything's at my fingertips.
- 31:06And it was like my brain, it was always a week or two recovery
- 31:10just from only being there a week.
- 31:11And I had new people there that lived there full time.
- 31:14And I was just like, wow, this is so hard to jump back and
- 31:17forth. And I still have friends in the
- 31:18mission field. So I'm in Uganda, so I'm still
- 31:20in 80 and, and yeah, it's, it's, it's a yeah.
- 31:26I'm I'm. It's hard to.
- 31:27Explain. Yeah.
- 31:28I'm curious because, you know, when I was in, when I was in
- 31:32Sierra Sierra Leone a number of years ago, I, I remember coming
- 31:36home and the connect, the richness of the connections with
- 31:41people. People just want to know you.
- 31:43They want to spend time with you.
- 31:44They want to get to know you. And it's interesting because
- 31:47then you come back here into the US and it's almost like no one
- 31:51wants to really know you. You know, you, you can sit down
- 31:54and have a cup of coffee with someone and they don't really
- 31:57want to know you, They want to tell you about them, right.
- 32:01It's, it's one of those things of like, you would know this
- 32:04because you're so curious. The importance of a question to
- 32:07open up conversation to have such an interest in someone else
- 32:12really does create a powerful bond.
- 32:15And I, and I'm curious as you've come back, have you, have you
- 32:18felt that lack of bond, you know, with an initial, you know,
- 32:22couple weeks of being home? And how do you create a powerful
- 32:26community so that you have those deep roots and deep connections
- 32:31that you're not like on an island by yourself, you know, in
- 32:34the middle of Beaverton or Oregon City or wherever you are?
- 32:37How do you make that connection of community?
- 32:41That's a good question. It I would say if you knocked on
- 32:49our neighbor's door in our community before we went to
- 32:54Haiti, we probably wouldn't know any of our neighbors.
- 32:59If you'd say after both places we've lived, the two different
- 33:03locations, it's a whole different thing.
- 33:05The last place we lived once we left, we did get somebody say
- 33:09that nobody does like gets together and hangs out in the
- 33:11cul-de-sac or chats anymore and we're like, oh man, but it was
- 33:15so rich everybody that kind of didn't get along.
- 33:18We figured a common ground and just got along and we're get to
- 33:21know each other and then here our our place in Beaverton, we
- 33:26just naturally are curious about our neighbors with with
- 33:29boundaries, right. Some people just don't want to
- 33:31be bugged and that's totally fine.
- 33:33But those are sprinkling and and like, and even if you have
- 33:36aggressive neighbors that are like that's my and I was like, I
- 33:40learned this when where I was working at Starbucks in college.
- 33:43Everybody never understood why the grumpy guy that came in in
- 33:46the morning, like the quote UN quote Boomer.
- 33:49How did I get to him? I was like, well, he speaks in
- 33:51sarcasm. You just have to learn how to
- 33:53see the cues. And so I just started like
- 33:56lightly sprinkling some back and then he'd smirk and I was like,
- 33:59I got him. Next time he came in, I just
- 34:02laid it in and they were like, how did you do that?
- 34:04I'm like, you just have to be curious enough to see what's
- 34:07really going on in their life and word of how do they speak?
- 34:11And so when you meet your neighbors, like, OK, this
- 34:13person's a little like a little high anxiety.
- 34:15So speak things that are more like comfort and like, you know,
- 34:20safety. This other person's adventurous
- 34:21talk about adventure. This person, you know, you know,
- 34:24there's just, but it's not like just jump in their lives.
- 34:27It takes time to develop that. Luckily we are in an HOA where
- 34:31they put on a barbecue and we decided to be the ones to take
- 34:35that on because we have to know everybody.
- 34:37And so we just try to have fun and then we try to host like
- 34:43special things. We have a lot of people from a
- 34:45lot of Asian countries with some Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, like
- 34:50Japanese. And we did the Lunar New Year to
- 34:52respect them. We said, Hey, we want to do this
- 34:55with you guys. How, how do we do, how do we
- 34:56host and do this respectfully? And they all got so excited.
- 35:00We filled the whole house up a lots of delicious food.
- 35:04And that's it's just getting that it's like you kind of have
- 35:06to be vulnerable enough to open up and get to know people.
- 35:09It's not always perfect. You're going to have some things
- 35:12you got to use boundaries with and learn how to navigate that.
- 35:15But like, wouldn't that be better to know your neighbors by
- 35:18name than not to know? So if something happened when
- 35:20you're gone or to you, your neighbors know that's not that
- 35:23does that doesn't look right? I think I'm going to call that
- 35:26in. I'm going to go check on them.
- 35:28We have a 91 year old that lives next to us.
- 35:30This lady takes one medication, super healthy, like I don't
- 35:36like, I've been learning as much as I can from her stories.
- 35:40Just a she's just a like, just a rock star lady, super nice and
- 35:46like, yeah, it's just getting to know people.
- 35:49And then there's another lady here.
- 35:50She's Taiwanese or from Taiwan and, well, no, born here, but
- 35:55her family's from Taiwan. And she's lived here for so
- 35:59long. She's like, I feel really
- 36:00embarrassed. I don't know everybody.
- 36:01It's like, that's OK. There's time to do it now.
- 36:04And like, I see her and I'm like, yelling at her name, Like,
- 36:06hey, how you doing? She's like, hey, Randy, like
- 36:10that's you kind of like, like the tool time thing.
- 36:12Like, that's a thing. Yeah, but like, but there's also
- 36:15careful. You got to be careful with the
- 36:16boundaries. Like respect your neighbors.
- 36:18Don't ask too much if they don't want to share it.
- 36:20Just it's an OEM and if they want just like this much that's
- 36:24OK. It's funny you say that because
- 36:26it doesn't take a lot. It it, it, you know, it's just,
- 36:29it's just a small little bit. You know, when we moved into our
- 36:31house about a year ago, it was probably like the second week we
- 36:34were here and I, I saw the neighbors dog wandering around
- 36:38the yard and they weren't around.
- 36:40And I was like, I don't know if the dog's friendly.
- 36:43I don't know if the dog's nice. And I'm like, OK, kids go in the
- 36:46house. And you know, I lured the dog
- 36:49back into their backyard. The, the latch on their gate
- 36:51wasn't, wasn't latched all the way.
- 36:53And so I lured the dog back in and, and then later on I, I
- 36:57knocked on the door after I saw they came home, I was like, Hey,
- 37:00just want to let you know your dog was out.
- 37:02I, I corralled them back into the backyard and, and closed it
- 37:06back up. Just wanted to let you know.
- 37:07And they're like, oh wow. And the same, you know, it could
- 37:10be something as small as like you see the neighbors garage
- 37:13door open at 11:00 at night and maybe you go and knock on the
- 37:17door or maybe you just go push the enter button on the key
- 37:20button so it closes. You know, it's just the small,
- 37:23it's just those small little things that can really make a
- 37:26difference in connecting with people, which you know, is one
- 37:29of the key things from what I understand with your life is
- 37:32look at this. Just find the small things that
- 37:35can make a big difference. Why is it important to look for
- 37:38small things that can make a big difference not only in other
- 37:40people's life but also in your life?
- 37:43Well, people are like also like to be seen like we live in such
- 37:48an individualistic, hyper individualistic world where
- 37:52we're on our screen so much and I catch myself doom scrolling
- 37:55and I have to put it down. I'm like, what is happening?
- 37:58Why am I doing this? And it's like, it's not that we
- 38:01think we're having connection there and we're not.
- 38:03We think we're learning a ton of stuff and where it's going to
- 38:05help us and be useful. And it's like, not really, but
- 38:09people want to be seen like and for the longest time, like I
- 38:13just, I don't know, I just didn't approach things right.
- 38:16And I was also some, this is I'm going to figure out how to
- 38:19connect these two. I was also curious why certain
- 38:21people are so successful at certain things.
- 38:26And I was like this person so optimistic, it makes me sick.
- 38:31Like I used to be very kind of pessimistic about it.
- 38:33And then I was like, oh, you have to be optimistic because
- 38:37you also have to be optimistic for yourself.
- 38:40Not just being nice to others, not fake nice, but look for
- 38:43specific things that make that person valuable and just go on
- 38:48it. You see them doing something
- 38:49well, Hey man, I really like that you do this very specific
- 38:51thing really well. Or like we have a new, another
- 38:54new neighbor and she's really good about keeping things clean
- 38:57and tidy. And I could tell she's prepping
- 38:58it for retirement. Make sure everything's done.
- 39:00She'll touch anything for another 20 plus years, right?
- 39:03And I'm like, I was like, I really appreciate you, you, you
- 39:06making me feel like I need to do more work on the front of the
- 39:09house and keep things all clean and like, I really appreciate
- 39:12you. And that created that connection
- 39:13for her. It was like, oh, they appreciate
- 39:15me. I was like, and then she'll say
- 39:17she'll bring little treats over like, Hey, I just want to show
- 39:19you I appreciate you. And and just like that, speaking
- 39:24those things to people like so much more valuable words of
- 39:29affirmation go a lot farther if you're intentional with it, like
- 39:33what I did there and, and being curious about people.
- 39:36But anyways, I hope that answered your question.
- 39:39I think, I think it's Jay by the way, for those who are going
- 39:41what you have my intentional, intentional espresso company,
- 39:45there's, there's a lot of intentionality behind what he
- 39:48does with his work, which I kind of want to get into that a
- 39:50little bit 'cause I find that also interesting because you
- 39:53know, there's business owners, there's entrepreneurs, but the
- 39:56ones that really do well are the ones that see a need and they go
- 40:00to fulfill that need. And we've talked about that.
- 40:02We were talking about that before we even started the
- 40:03podcast is that it's, you know, an entrepreneur is someone that
- 40:07looks for a need and then they go and they fulfill it.
- 40:10You have a very specific niche that you that you go towards to
- 40:14really help people explain a little bit more about where
- 40:17intentional espresso came from. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:21So I threw a series of events was on this program.
- 40:26I think a lot of people might know what I'm talking about
- 40:29where you lose a little bit of weight and eat 5 meals a day and
- 40:31all this stuff. But I well, there's a point
- 40:34where we couldn't like do much at night.
- 40:37And because before my daughter was born, I was like, I can't
- 40:39eat or drink certain like what are we going to do for fun?
- 40:42And then I was like, wait, we could drink black coffee?
- 40:47And so we started hitting up like all of the third wave shops
- 40:50and just getting like pour overs.
- 40:51And I was like tasting and there's all these different
- 40:53things about coffee And of course the caffeine is kicking
- 40:56in. So my brain is stimulated and I
- 41:02started coffee geeking and that started this crazy like
- 41:07snowball. And then we're, then I worked at
- 41:09Starbucks for college and then I was talking to another friend
- 41:12that was in medical sales and he goes, Hey, I bought I or I, I
- 41:15hire these carts that come in and do catering for two hours.
- 41:20And he told, I can't remember how much he said, but it's time.
- 41:22I thought you checked how much and you're, and you're not fully
- 41:26satisfied with that. And my brain goes, here's a
- 41:28need. You're a coffee geek, how can
- 41:30you do it better? And so that kind of started the
- 41:34seed. And then he kept bugging about
- 41:37it more and more and more. And then as I got into my junior
- 41:41year in college, I realized that corporate world wasn't going to
- 41:44be for me my, my ADHD, not knowing that's what it was.
- 41:48But like that brain in an Oscar brain was not going to work in
- 41:53the accounting and finance world.
- 41:55That's what I was kind of working towards and the business
- 41:58world. And so I just kind of let it go
- 42:02and let my brain just one night go nuts on this whole idea of
- 42:05intentional espresso. And then my my wife got laid off
- 42:09also that summer and we drove to Canada with my six month old
- 42:13daughter to go on a week fit. Like we just, I know we don't
- 42:16have the money to do this, but we're going to go do this to get
- 42:18away. And on the drive up there with a
- 42:20napkin, we started the whole like she wrote it on a piece of
- 42:23napkin. I'm driving.
- 42:24We just dialogue her and I. We are the best balance of
- 42:28power, I'd say, because she she asks like tons of follow up
- 42:33questions, which it's helped me go, OK, I need to look at things
- 42:36differently and that's why you having the right person in your
- 42:40life, man helps. So we we started the whole idea.
- 42:43I drew out, I knew penny this structure.
- 42:46I need to build a cart like this.
- 42:47I need these systems in place. I knew accounting.
- 42:51I knew a lot of different things are ready how to set up a
- 42:54business, how to do an LLC Somehow I knew a lot of how to
- 42:57do a lot of this stuff. So that's because I'm curious.
- 43:00I want to know a lot of different things.
- 43:02And through that trip, we came back and started everything,
- 43:07built the website, built everything.
- 43:09Didn't really know a lot of stuff we were doing.
- 43:11We just made it happen. Figured out navigating the
- 43:15health department, how that works.
- 43:17The pros like the NAV, just learning all those weird little
- 43:20Gray areas with things, finding a location to store things that
- 43:24I could officially store things properly.
- 43:26And yeah, it was just, it's taken off from there.
- 43:30Went from thinking that I was just going to do farmers markets
- 43:33and a few caterings a month to scrap that.
- 43:36We're going to redesign everything and do something
- 43:39different. But there was a pivot point in
- 43:422017 in November where all of my stuff was stolen.
- 43:47Like I didn't even tell you don't have no idea about this.
- 43:50So I was had two events that morning, 1 was a catering and
- 43:53one was a vending event. Back when I would do sell off
- 43:56the the cart and I got up at 5:00 AM, it was going to be a
- 43:59really long day. I walk outside, I had a 4 by 8
- 44:03or 5 by 8 cargo trailer. It was missing.
- 44:06It was not on the back of my rig.
- 44:08I had it locked everything. And I looked down you see the
- 44:11scrape mark along the road and they stole it.
- 44:15And I sat there going what do I do?
- 44:20And then I went back in the house and I said, honey, I woke
- 44:24her up and said, somebody stole all of our stuff.
- 44:26I'm going to go sit at Starbucks.
- 44:27I'm going to figure this out calmly.
- 44:30But now we're looking back, she's like, you came in and I
- 44:32thought you were going to be freaking out.
- 44:34I was like, I just went into like, this is drama mode and
- 44:37there's no, no freaking out. I got to fix the problem.
- 44:40And that's what it takes. Actually an entrepreneur too.
- 44:42And when crap hits the fan, you're like, OK, what's the
- 44:45solution to fix it? I'll, I'll, I'll cry later.
- 44:49We just don't have time to cry because, yeah, this sucks, but I
- 44:52don't want to. We got to fix it.
- 44:54So, yeah, we went through that. And then what the beautiful
- 44:58thing was is I met some other awesome people in the coffee
- 45:01industry. The owners of Case Study stepped
- 45:04up. He reached out to me and was
- 45:07like, hey, man, I see. I hear what happened to you.
- 45:10I'm going to send a cart and a barista out.
- 45:12Just pay the barista. You don't owe me nothing to help
- 45:15you out. And I was like, what?
- 45:17I was like, dude, I love you guys.
- 45:20And so I want to make sure the news heard about it so I can
- 45:23like, I'm like, they're awesome. I love those guys.
- 45:27And even Evan Eldredi reached out was like, hey, we have this
- 45:30espresso machine, can you use it?
- 45:31And unfortunately we couldn't use it, but it was like cool
- 45:33things like that. And the food caterer I was
- 45:35working with that night, Cam and Cam catering Terry's like, I'm
- 45:41really sad this is happening. Like I don't even know what to
- 45:44say. Like she was like torn, like, I
- 45:45need you. But at the same time, this is
- 45:47horrible. She's like, by the way, I have
- 45:49an older espresso machine back at our at our catering location.
- 45:54We used to use. Do you want me to bring it and
- 45:57see if you can actually make it work?
- 45:59And so then I called Black Rabbit services since Saturday
- 46:02morning and they're not open on the weekend.
- 46:03I called a guy and he's like, he's like, whatever you need,
- 46:07man. I was like, really, It's like I
- 46:08was like, this is the machine I have.
- 46:09What part should I take with me? He's like, just stop by.
- 46:12I'll give you everything you need to like take with you just
- 46:14in case. And we just found another temp.
- 46:16We just made it happen. And that's where Terry was like,
- 46:20I knew I wanted to work with you for here on out.
- 46:22When you were able to pull that off, I was like, you just saw
- 46:27that's what clients just want you to solve problems.
- 46:30Like they don't have time to fix that.
- 46:32And she had a client that she did not need to say, Oh, by the
- 46:34way, the coffee cater can't come in now because this happened.
- 46:38Like not that they would be mad, but you still want to perform
- 46:42and take care of that client without them knowing.
- 46:45So we ended up from instead of just having one cart, we had two
- 46:48there. And all these people just show
- 46:50up to help me. And then they told me to go sit
- 46:51down. You've had a tough day.
- 46:54We're going to work the cart. And I'm like, what?
- 46:57So it like Brian from relevant coffee in Vancouver.
- 47:00Love that dude. Rachel from Thornton Family
- 47:04Roasters and then yeah, shoot Russ and and yeah, from case
- 47:12study. Yeah.
- 47:13I was like, thanks guys. Like, wow, that is like huge.
- 47:18But so we went through that and that was that was a tailing that
- 47:22was telling me like, OK, this happened.
- 47:25I just take insurance and quit. And my gut was like, you don't
- 47:28quit. That's not how you work.
- 47:31And if you're ever going to make it a business, you just you, you
- 47:33got to find the solution and not quit.
- 47:36And so we just redesigned and built a couple different carts
- 47:39and then that that that suffice. We had, I ran 2 carts for a
- 47:44little bit as and then COVID hit.
- 47:46So I was like gearing up. And then so 2020 was the year we
- 47:53were supposed to admit, get our big stride, our systems in
- 47:56place. And it was just me running out
- 47:58with a bunch of temporary baristas working with me and
- 48:01COVID hit. And that's another moment where
- 48:03I thought, am I just going to sell everything and just be
- 48:07like, this is, this is blow #2 like this is I'm already kind of
- 48:12in debt building this guy take, you know, credit card, just
- 48:15trying to make it work. I knew I was going to get to a
- 48:17place. And then I just felt God's like,
- 48:21Nope, just hold on, hold on. But I want you to be responsible
- 48:24with your money. Everything you do, no excess,
- 48:28anything, just tighten it up and just wait.
- 48:31You, you're set. You're fine.
- 48:33Just I'm like, OK, OK. You know, you just don't know
- 48:36because as a business owner, I've watched a lot of people
- 48:38because you have to take on debt that still pay for your overhead
- 48:41even as you're a one man show you still have insurance to pay
- 48:44for any payments on. Anything else you have to pay
- 48:45for. There's still cash flow going
- 48:47out. And so, and then SBA was a huge
- 48:51blessing that came through the EDIL, anything like that I
- 48:57applied for. And of course, as a caterer, you
- 49:00completely qualify because there's huge losses I had.
- 49:04And so I mean, I didn't get rich on any of that stuff.
- 49:07It was just able to restructure and clean up debts that
- 49:11occurred, like pay for things and just get things packaged up.
- 49:15And yeah, it was, it was such, it was an interesting moment.
- 49:19I really thought I was done. But through that, there were
- 49:23other coffee companies that started and like 2122 and I was
- 49:29watching them. One particular is called Night
- 49:32Owl Coffee in Dallas, TX. And at first I was like, what is
- 49:36this guy doing? He's just just very candid, just
- 49:39off the cuff, crazy Texan. Like who is this guy?
- 49:43Like he's doing some just just being weird.
- 49:45I was like, as a Portland coffee geek, I was like, you can't do
- 49:48that. No, we don't pull shots like
- 49:50that. My brain my black and white
- 49:51like. But then I was like, OK, Randy,
- 49:53stop. Like what is he doing extra
- 49:56outside of you can keep that core principle you already run
- 49:59What other things this guy doing?
- 50:01I was like, I'm just going to reach out to him.
- 50:02We live in completely different cities.
- 50:04I admire his work. I just want to reach out and get
- 50:06to know this guy and see if I can learn from it. him and I
- 50:09struck up a great friendship. I went out to see him a few
- 50:13times, but once Dallas saw him at Houston at a coffee Expo, I
- 50:16was absolutely inspired by how he was doing things.
- 50:20I come from coffee. He comes from not coffee.
- 50:22So it was like, I'm learning from this guy and then he would
- 50:26call me and say, dude, I'm just building, we're building carts
- 50:29on the fly. Where are these parts at?
- 50:31You know, all the mechanics of stuff.
- 50:33And I'd be like, by this part, this part, that's what you need.
- 50:35He's like, dude, thank you. And so we all, we developed this
- 50:38little tight knit community amongst about 4-5, six of us
- 50:42that like look out for each other.
- 50:43But he started doing, he started taking the bar instead of just
- 50:47plain old catering, why don't we use this as a marketing and
- 50:50branding tool for our brands? So everybody loves coffee, but
- 50:55why, why aren't we just pairing up with like, like Caterpillar
- 50:59and be like, let's do a brand launch or some store and your
- 51:02stuff's on everything. It's not about us, about you
- 51:04guys. We're giving out coffee and
- 51:06creating these crazy moments around coffee.
- 51:09What we were always focused on doing in a cafe, now we can do
- 51:12anywhere. And so I, my brain, just, my
- 51:16brain blew up. My entrepreneur mind was like,
- 51:20oh, I get it. And so then I went and visited
- 51:23him as I saw what he was doing and he goes, dude, you're not a
- 51:26caterer. You're in events marketing and
- 51:28catering. Like you're more events
- 51:31marketing branded mindset than you're just catering.
- 51:35And when you get past that mindset and you realize what
- 51:38that is for you. Because at first I'm like, what
- 51:40do you mean? My brain's just not?
- 51:42And so then I just got curious. I'm like my curious brain
- 51:45started just Wheeling through. OK, well, if it's defined that
- 51:48way, it looks like this and it looks like that.
- 51:51And so then I realized, oh, this is something a lot of people
- 51:54don't even realize is possible. Even though we live in Portland
- 51:58and coffee catering has been around since the 90s, there's
- 52:01plenty of forefathers of businesses that have been here.
- 52:04They're not here anymore. But to start changing it and
- 52:08putting custom stickers and logos on stuff, it seems like
- 52:12him and Dallas and a few others kind of started that.
- 52:17And then I picked it up and other people picked up.
- 52:19And next, you know, there's a zillion of our startup coffee
- 52:22carts out there also follow that same pattern, which is kind of
- 52:25cool because like we were there before everybody else and it's
- 52:29happened here in Portland. We, we know we're watched and we
- 52:31at first it was kind of weird to see people take the idea.
- 52:34But I'm like that, that says we're doing the right thing.
- 52:37What are we going to do next? How are we going to tailor?
- 52:40How are we going to innovate and do some things that isn't just
- 52:43throwing a sticker on something? It takes actual talented people
- 52:46behind the bar to pull it off and that's where hospitality
- 52:52comes in, being curious about the client, how to fulfill their
- 52:54needs and where they were. What are they?
- 52:57What are the outcomes they want with these events?
- 52:59I mean, sometimes they're just basic catering, but there are
- 53:03few there like, hey, we have this objective, how can you help
- 53:06us get there? My wife gets on it.
- 53:08She loved This is Her world and she's taking over the sales and
- 53:11marketing side of stuff. She's the one that creates all
- 53:13the videos and content now and she sits with them and it's
- 53:16like, OK, I, I, we, let's pull this off.
- 53:19This is what we're going to do. And she'll send proofs and send
- 53:21mock ups and they just love it. So it just takes the right,
- 53:25you're going to be solving problems.
- 53:27But within that you also have to set up systems, right?
- 53:32If you, if you can't, I always stress this people, if you can't
- 53:35set up a cart system at 30 minutes or less, then you're
- 53:40loose. You're, you're, you got problems
- 53:43because, because if you start quantifying that you want to
- 53:45scale to like say 4050 sixty $1000 a month and duplicating
- 53:50that over and over again and then having baristas trained to
- 53:52tear down and like do that over and over again.
- 53:55You will start seeing a lot of pain when you hit like that 15
- 53:59to 20 catering the month. You'll start noticing some
- 54:02cracks in your systems like, oh, they didn't put this here and I
- 54:05got four more hours of filling this and there's a lot of stuff
- 54:09that just starts falling through.
- 54:10I think I bet you could do it. Yeah, I have 20.
- 54:12I'll tell him 20 caters a month till starts the end.
- 54:15Or you'll get tired if you're doing them all because you're
- 54:17spending all day long. So I immediately knowing my
- 54:20corporate background, being in like Starbucks and when I was
- 54:2221, I was one of the youngest Carl's junior restaurant store
- 54:25manager, the 21 learning systems and going, hey, I didn't like
- 54:30the corporate world, but I love the systems part of corporate
- 54:32world. And so putting an SOP together.
- 54:35So we developed, we have a handbook that we're about to
- 54:38finalize. It's just for our internal work
- 54:40as literally how to do everything that we do for
- 54:44employees. Just a little thing like how do
- 54:47you dial in espresso or this the we call it the OOSHIT.
- 54:52Like what do we do when this happens?
- 54:54We have that page because there's so many things that can
- 54:58go wrong and and yeah, and it's you just most people don't know
- 55:02what to do. You know, what I love about that
- 55:04is it's, it seems like you've become a master of the pivot.
- 55:09You know, for, for those of you guys listening, like the pivot,
- 55:11like in basketball is like, you know, when you, when you're
- 55:14going to go One Direction and you decide to go another and you
- 55:17plant 1 foot and you turn there, There's a, there's a pivot when
- 55:22it comes to entrepreneurship, when it comes to life, when
- 55:25something's not working, you have to pivot.
- 55:28You know, when when life seems to fall apart, you pivot and you
- 55:30try something else. And what's really fun, what's
- 55:33really kind of funny is like listening to your story,
- 55:36understanding like your personality of like everything
- 55:39black and white, like this is the way it has to be done.
- 55:41You know, there's a lot of people that have a really hard
- 55:44time pivoting of like, OK, so you know, this is the problem.
- 55:48This is the only answer. But for you, there's not just
- 55:51one answer. It's about diving into the
- 55:54problem and saying, OK, what are the what are all the options?
- 55:57What about this? What about this?
- 55:58You know, there's a guy over here that's doing this.
- 56:00Well, what if we tried this? And so it's interesting to me
- 56:03that you've kind of become the master of pivoting within
- 56:06coffee, you know, specifically with what you're doing.
- 56:11I'm curious, how did you fall in love with pivot?
- 56:13Maybe you haven't fallen in love with pivoting.
- 56:15How have you gotten good at pivoting when life throws you
- 56:20curveballs? Because I know a lot of people
- 56:22that you know, you know, something happens in their life.
- 56:25Their morning is just slightly altered and the rest of the day
- 56:29is ruined and they're not able to pivot.
- 56:31How do you get? I get good at pivoting with
- 56:33problems. Oh man, that just takes time.
- 56:37I mean, I, I do remember when I was younger that that stuff
- 56:40would mess with my mind too. And I could not understand.
- 56:42I put it can't change. But I, I also like had a, a
- 56:47stint there where I did business to business sales and I was pure
- 56:49Commission around four or five years and I had to pivot all the
- 56:54time or I would just not make money.
- 56:56And so I was put in this position where I was forced to
- 56:59do it. And even when you work high,
- 57:03high volume, like say Starbucks or fast food, like their
- 57:06systems, but you still have to pivot.
- 57:08You still have to work heavy under pressure.
- 57:10Something goes wrong and you've got to fix it.
- 57:13There's that moment where you're like, well, if that's the
- 57:15solution, that's the solution, we'll pivot.
- 57:18So it's not a matter of right and wrong.
- 57:19It's more like just like there are multiple rights within that
- 57:23pivot. Like this happens, here's the
- 57:25next step. If this happens, next step is to
- 57:27go this direction. And I, I also had to learn how
- 57:31to live in the Gray. It's not easy for my
- 57:34personality. People that know me well, those
- 57:38that know me well enough that really know me, that know that
- 57:40I'm not always black and white and I can be funny, but there's
- 57:43times I, I give off the impression that I'm super black
- 57:46and white and I'm like, no, I don't mean it, but it's just my
- 57:49like, it's who I am as a core. And so I'm learning how to live
- 57:52and I Gray and be cool with it And like, you know what, we're
- 57:56not going to wash that dish at my house to right now.
- 57:58It shouldn't be put away in the dishwasher.
- 58:00You know, little things. Well, that needs to be done this
- 58:02way. It's like, Nope, today I'm going
- 58:04to ignore that. It's good for me.
- 58:06Yeah, I love you have. To practice, you've got to
- 58:08practice those moments where like, I have no control over
- 58:11that and that is not a priority right now.
- 58:14Like that's just let it go like Elsa.
- 58:18Oh goodness, you. Oh, now everyone has that stuck
- 58:21in their head. I've I yeah, it it.
- 58:23So what I what I love about your story is there are there are so
- 58:27many different wild points that come in that all come together
- 58:31at the end. And I think we all kind of had
- 58:33have this where you you kind of learn something here and then
- 58:38later on down the road, you don't realize that 1520 years
- 58:40later it comes up to mind you go, oh, yeah, I remember, I
- 58:43remember doing this. And you can kind of start to
- 58:45apply something that you've learned a long time ago.
- 58:48You're you're, you're the curious guy that likes to study
- 58:51different things, but you don't just study things and find them
- 58:54interesting hobbies. You're unfortunately like me
- 58:57where you like, Oh yeah, coffee, coffee is really interesting.
- 59:01And then you take a deep dive in a coffee and you're stuck in the
- 59:04deep world of coffee and there's there's so many different things
- 59:08you can get into. You can get into, you know,
- 59:10coffee, cigars, there's whiskey, there's camera equipment,
- 59:13there's lighting equipment, there's audio equipment, there's
- 59:16computers, there's botany that like the world.
- 59:19Beekeeping. It's.
- 59:20Beekeeping. We've had beekeepers on the
- 59:23podcast, you know it's. That is, that is a whole rabbit
- 59:26hole I love going down. I love beekeepers.
- 59:29They're fascinating people, but it's really interesting that
- 59:33you, you have a love for curious curiosity.
- 59:37And you know, and as we're kind of wrapping up, I'm curious for
- 59:40yourself, why is it so important to be curious and to learn
- 59:46something new maybe outside of your wheelhouse that maybe you
- 59:49don't feel like would apply with what you're currently doing?
- 59:55The first thing that came to my mind is I was just having this
- 59:58conversation after a lunch meeting I had with my wife and
- 1:00:03one of our vendors and. I realized that if you're not a
- 1:00:08forever learner and you're not curious, you will get stuck and
- 1:00:12you'll be that person that goes, oh, I don't know how to use
- 1:00:16technology or, oh, and I'm like, I just don't want to be that
- 1:00:20person. I like learning new things and
- 1:00:22it's fun. You get excited when you learn
- 1:00:24new things and then you can relate to people too.
- 1:00:29But yeah, I, I mean, that's what I was thinking.
- 1:00:31Like I, I don't have, I said to my wife, I think I'm going to be
- 1:00:35a forever learner. I, I, I'm on Duolingo for the
- 1:00:38last four years learning Spanish.
- 1:00:40I barely know it, but I'm like, I want to avidly, like
- 1:00:43continually commit to this and just like just learn and learn
- 1:00:47and learn and be curious, I think.
- 1:00:49And when you learn and you're curious about things, you're
- 1:00:51less likely to be prejudice against other people too.
- 1:00:55That's also the political thing. I'm like, hey, like if you
- 1:00:57actually got to know everybody, we probably all get along pretty
- 1:01:00well. We just, we're just sitting on
- 1:01:02these hot topics that aren't, shouldn't be hot topics, but
- 1:01:04they are. And I, I think that that
- 1:01:09curiosity is not there. We're not we're afraid to ask
- 1:01:11questions or get to know people. But yeah, I don't know if that
- 1:01:16answered your question. Around I think, I think it does
- 1:01:18and I love it because it brings up the curiosity piece of like,
- 1:01:21what are you curious about right now?
- 1:01:23Like even going out of your house, are you curious about the
- 1:01:25people that you live around? Are you like, are you afraid of
- 1:01:28the people that you live around that you're afraid to go and
- 1:01:31talk to them or say something stupid?
- 1:01:33Like I think for a lot of people who are listening right now,
- 1:01:37it's a great encouragement to hear you talk Randy that like
- 1:01:40get out of your bubble and go explore the world that you're
- 1:01:43in. Go find a small, a little hobby
- 1:01:46that like it. It's we're always looking for
- 1:01:49something that's going to make us better in some way.
- 1:01:51Like, oh, I'm going to do marketing, so it'll be better
- 1:01:53for the podcast or I'm going to go and I'm going to learn to do
- 1:01:56decorating for my cake so I can sell my cakes at a higher price.
- 1:01:59Like we're always trying to like business, business if I or
- 1:02:04entrepreneur, if I everything of like, we're going to use this to
- 1:02:07make more money or to make life better versus just go and learn
- 1:02:10something fun and exciting. And I'll say this like currently
- 1:02:14my, I'm going to throw myself under the bus with this one.
- 1:02:17My, what my, my daughter just got a bracelet making kit.
- 1:02:22And so she's like all into the bracelet stuff.
- 1:02:24And in my head I'm like, well, I've got to learn how to make
- 1:02:27bracelets. Otherwise I can't teach her to
- 1:02:29make bracelets. So I've been like, I've been
- 1:02:31taking her little bracelet maker when she's not using it.
- 1:02:34And I'm, I'm just, I'm making bracelets and I'm like, OK, oh,
- 1:02:37this is really, oh, now, Oh, the pattern and all these things.
- 1:02:40And it's fun and an exciting way that I'm going, will I ever use
- 1:02:44this in any other way? Probably not.
- 1:02:46But there is a moment where maybe I see someone that makes
- 1:02:49them and I go, oh, oh, that's, that's a basket weave or oh,
- 1:02:53that's, that's a Chevron knot. Oh yeah, that's really
- 1:02:56interesting. And there's there's something
- 1:02:58about being curious enough to be connectors with other people.
- 1:03:03Randy, I've really enjoyed having you on the podcast.
- 1:03:05I have one more question here for you.
- 1:03:08But before we ask that question for all of you guys listening,
- 1:03:11if you love coffee, if you have an event coming up and you want
- 1:03:15to bring a good, not even a good an amazing coffee experience to
- 1:03:20your event here in the Pacific Northwest, Portland, I don't, I
- 1:03:24think you're all over the place here, right, Randy?
- 1:03:27Yeah, yeah, yeah. We we do have a global
- 1:03:29connection all over the country if necessary.
- 1:03:32So if you want a good coffee. I mean nationwide.
- 1:03:36Nationwide, global to come soon, hopefully, but if you want to
- 1:03:42bring coffee into your event and you want people to enjoy it, to
- 1:03:45have a great experience with someone who is serving high
- 1:03:49quality coffee at just a really great experience, go check out
- 1:03:53Intentional espresso. Not espresso, by the way, that's
- 1:03:57not how you pronounce it. Did you see it?
- 1:03:59His face like faded. He went white, he went ghost
- 1:04:02because we said the wrong word. Espresso.
- 1:04:05If you want to find out more about Randy and Intentional
- 1:04:08Espresso, you can go in the show notes here or you can go to
- 1:04:11www.intentionalespresso.com. Great place to go find out more
- 1:04:17on the show. We talk a lot about More Than
- 1:04:19before because that's the name of the podcast.
- 1:04:21But it really is about growth. It's about development.
- 1:04:23It's about being better today than you were yesterday.
- 1:04:26And so I'm curious for you, Randy, as you look into the
- 1:04:29future, as you continue to grow and you have this curiosity
- 1:04:33mindset, how would you encourage others to be more than before
- 1:04:37today, more than they were yesterday?
- 1:04:42Yeah, one, stop judging yourself.
- 1:04:46Yeah, ask questions. Find somebody that's doing
- 1:04:48something better than you and don't think of it as the
- 1:04:50competitor and think about somebody you can learn from and
- 1:04:53be open minded and definitely ask questions.
- 1:05:00So yeah, I that's that's simple. I love it.
- 1:05:04I was giving, I was giving you enough room to do whatever you
- 1:05:06wanted with that. So I.
- 1:05:07Know I was like, it's a very simple like I like simplicity
- 1:05:11too. Like keep it, you know, when I
- 1:05:13was younger, you know, here, keep it simple, stupid.
- 1:05:16I was like, yeah, that actually is really smart.
- 1:05:19And I was telling people that even employees that work me or
- 1:05:21my wife, I'm like if you can't create something that's simple
- 1:05:24and duplicatable, it's too complex.
- 1:05:26It's not worth. It's just going to burn you out,
- 1:05:30Yeah. So. 100% definitely.
- 1:05:32But yeah, definitely keep yourself curious and ask
- 1:05:34questions, man. If you try not to be annoying to
- 1:05:36that person, but like, you can clean off some really smart
- 1:05:40older people that have been there and done that.
- 1:05:41And they'll just say, hey, here's some ways that have made
- 1:05:45it work for me. And here's is where I failed.
- 1:05:47And even in their failures, you can be like, well, I want to do
- 1:05:50that. Maybe I'll tweak that a little
- 1:05:51bit. And I could succeed where they
- 1:05:52failed because they made those mistakes and I won't.
- 1:05:55But yeah, it is. Yeah.
- 1:05:57And you got to be humble about it.
- 1:05:58We don't know everything. I mean, I act like that
- 1:06:01sometimes. I feel like I know it all, but
- 1:06:02I'm like, no, I'm dumb in a humble way.
- 1:06:06So wait, that's a humble frag anyways.
- 1:06:10I'm so humble now. That's the ship.
- 1:06:13I love it so good. For all of you guys listening,
- 1:06:16make sure you go like this episode.

- 1:06:40experience more than before.
