- 0:31an average team in the early 1970s, having missed
- 0:34the postseason for seven consecutive seasons.
- 0:37In this game, the Athletics' Denny McLean took
- 0:39the mound against the Yankees' Mike Kekich. This
- 0:42audio recording is from the New York radio broadcast
- 0:44featuring announcers Frank Messer, Phil Rizzuto,
- 0:47and Bill White. on another well sort of a chilly
- 0:58evening with a breeze blowing toward right field
- 1:01and tonight the New York Yankees will try to
- 1:03get back on the winning track after losing last
- 1:07night's ball game to the Oakland A's in 12 innings
- 1:11by a score of 4 to 3 on a pinch hit double by
- 1:15former Yankee teammate Mike Egan and Phil Rizzuto
- 1:20I'd have to say tonight the Yankees will certainly
- 1:22have their work cut out for them because they're
- 1:25going against Dennis McLean, and even though
- 1:28McLean was a 22 -game loser for the Washington
- 1:32Senators last year, I've got the feel that with
- 1:36A winning ball club, a contending ball club,
- 1:39which Oakland is, McClain will come back and
- 1:41very possibly reverse that one -loss record.
- 1:45Well, I'm sure you're right, Frank. I expect
- 1:46Denny McClain to have a big year this year. He
- 1:49won his first start for Oakland. They said he
- 1:51didn't have his good stuff, but with that impeccable
- 1:53control that he has, with a club like he has
- 1:55behind him, he's going to be rough. And as we
- 1:58look down his lifetime mark against the Yankees,
- 2:01he's won 15 in lower state. So as you say the
- 2:05Yankees got their work cut out for them one thing
- 2:07they know that he's around the plate and he's
- 2:09a fellow like You don't have to worry too much
- 2:13about you can really dig in that good control
- 2:17And if it's not too good, we might see a little
- 2:20extra hitting tonight. That is probably the reason
- 2:23that McLean has, in the past, led the league
- 2:25in home runs given up by a pitcher. Absolutely,
- 2:29thanks. Same thing happened to Robin Roberts,
- 2:31who was a big winning pitcher, but yet year after
- 2:33year he'd lead the league in giving up home runs.
- 2:36Okay, Phil, we'll be back with the starting lineups
- 2:38right after this message. During the next few
- 2:42weeks, you'll be hearing the three letters X,
- 2:44B, R often. What do they mean? They're a computer
- 2:48code for Blue Cross and Blue Shield's Extended
- 2:51Benefits Writer. Extended Benefits Writer means
- 2:54that your basic Blue Cross and Blue Shield coverage
- 2:57is extended up to $730 benefit days or $15 ,000,
- 3:03whichever is less. Now, most illnesses are adequately
- 3:06covered by our basic Blue Cross and Blue Shield
- 3:09plans. However, a long -term illness or serious
- 3:12injury could require months of hospital recuperation
- 3:15time and physician's care. Then, our extended
- 3:18benefits writer takes over where our basic plans
- 3:22end. Blue Cross and Blue Shield are making XBR
- 3:25available to groups of four or more until April
- 3:2830th. Its cost is less than ten cents a day for
- 3:32full family coverage. Contact Blue Cross and
- 3:35Albany while enrollment is still open. XBR. It's
- 3:39like having an extra $15 ,000 in the bank ready
- 3:43to pay hospital and medical expenses whenever
- 3:46the need arises. All right, a reminder right
- 3:53now that this program is authorized under rights
- 3:55granted by the New York Yankees solely for the
- 3:58entertainment of our audience and any publication,
- 4:01reproduction, or other use of the descriptions
- 4:03and accounts for this game without the express
- 4:05consent of the New York Yankees is prohibited.
- 4:08And a big bonus started this year by ABCO Financial
- 4:13Services. For every home run hit by a Yankee
- 4:17player, that's tonight and every day and every
- 4:19night, your friends at ABCO Financial Services
- 4:22will donate a set of nine baseball gloves to
- 4:25a deserving youth group in the Yankee broadcast
- 4:28area. So listen closely, because your group may
- 4:31be a lucky recipient. Well, we go to the lineups
- 4:35now. for Oakland, and they won a tough ball game
- 4:38from the Yankees last night in 12 innings. It'll
- 4:41be Burt Campanaris leading off and playing shortstop.
- 4:45In left field, batting second, Joe Rudy. Reggie
- 4:48Jackson will be the right fielder, batting third.
- 4:51Hitting in the cleanup spot at third base, Sal
- 4:53Bando. Bobby Brooks, the center fielder, batting
- 4:56fifth. Catching tonight and batting sixth, Dave
- 4:59Duncan. Mike Epstein will be at first base, batting
- 5:03seventh. Larry Brown will be playing second base
- 5:06batting eighth. Remember last night, Dick Green,
- 5:08after laying down a beautiful bunt, had trouble
- 5:11with his back and was barely able to get off
- 5:14the field under his own power, so he is not in
- 5:16the ball game. Larry Brown will be playing second
- 5:19batting eighth. And Denny McLean pitching and
- 5:21batting ninth. For the Yankees, Morris Clark
- 5:25leads off at second base. Catching and batting
- 5:28second, Thurman Monson. Bobby Mercer in center
- 5:30field, hitting third. In the cleanup spot in
- 5:33left field, Roy White. Felipe Alou will be at
- 5:36first base batting fifth. The right fielder batting
- 5:39sixth, Johnny Callison. Rich McKinney will be
- 5:42at third base batting seventh. The shortstop
- 5:45hitting eighth, Gene Michael. Pitching and batting
- 5:48ninth, Mike Kekich. And as the men in blue come
- 5:52out, the umpires, along with Dick Williams, the
- 5:55skipper of the Oakland A's, and Ralph Hopp will
- 5:57be out there. There he is, right in the middle
- 5:58of the umpires. It'll be Ron Luciano calling
- 6:01balls and strikes, Frank Umott at first base,
- 6:05Jim Odom the umpire at second, and Don Denkinger
- 6:08at third. This is the New York Yankee baseball
- 6:12network we pause now for station identification.
- 6:41Well, they break up the huddle at home plate.
- 6:45And Frank Messer, it's just a shame the Yankees
- 6:48have been in every ball game so far this year.
- 6:50But with the way Baltimore is, can you imagine
- 6:52Baltimore getting beat three games in a row?
- 6:55No, I can't. No, that's right. But Yankees could
- 6:58have really picked up some ground. Yes, they
- 7:00could have. Baltimore lost two out of three in
- 7:03the last two in a row in Cleveland. And then
- 7:07the Orioles were beaten again last night. by
- 7:11Kansas City. In fact, they were shut out by Kansas
- 7:18City last night, three to nothing. Now, ladies
- 7:22and gentlemen, we hope you'll join with Robert
- 7:25Merrill in our national anthem. begins his warm
- 9:23-up throws. We'll take a look at other games
- 9:25for you. Minnesota defeated Boston 3 -1 this
- 9:29afternoon. Dick Woodson got the win. Dave LaRoche
- 9:31saved it for him. And Ray Culp was the loser.
- 9:36Baltimore, Kansas City tonight. The Orioles have
- 9:38lost three straight, as Phil just remarked. The
- 9:42Chicago White Sox trade for Dick Allen paid off
- 9:44again this afternoon, as the former Richie, now
- 9:47Dick Allen. hit a tempting two -run homer to
- 9:51carry the White Sox to a 7 -5 win over Cleveland.
- 9:55Earlier in the ball game, Mike Andrews had hit
- 9:58a grand slam homerun to tie it up 4 -4 at the
- 10:01end of 7. The winning pitcher was Steve Keely,
- 10:04and the loser was Steve Mingori. Detroit at Texas
- 10:09tonight. California beat Milwaukee 3 -1 this
- 10:12afternoon, as Ricky Clark, with help from Allen
- 10:14and May, Rudy May working in relief, saving the
- 10:17ball game for him. defeated Bill Parsons, who
- 10:20started for the Milwaukee Brewers. California
- 10:233, Milwaukee 1. And looking at the National League
- 10:27this afternoon, the San Francisco Giants defeated
- 10:34the Philadelphia Phillies 8 -6 on a 10th inning
- 10:39home run by Bobby Bonds. The Phillies had scored
- 10:44two runs in the top half of the 10th inning to
- 10:46go out in front 6 -4. The Giants got four runs
- 10:50in the bottom half of the tenth and won it eight
- 10:53to six. And Kingman had two more home runs for
- 10:57the Giants. He's hit four for the year now. The
- 11:00rest of the game for tonight, we'll check those
- 11:02scores as they come in. First pitch of this ball
- 11:07game to Kampenaris, butted back to the mound,
- 11:10fielded by Kakechi, throws to first and throws
- 11:12him out. Though this game gets underway in a
- 11:14hurry with Kampenaris. Trying to butt himself
- 11:19on and check it pops on that ball quickly and
- 11:23throw him out One pitch and one away and here
- 11:28comes Joe Rudy Silver's little you remarked last
- 11:32night that this Joe Rudy is one of the more improved
- 11:34ball players in the league He is and didn't he
- 11:38lay down a beautiful bunt last night, too. He
- 11:40certainly did the Oakland A is wearing the Well,
- 11:45they're not wedding gown white anymore. What
- 11:47is that, the shade of white? It's if white had
- 11:49different shades, but it does. Curb ball to Rudy
- 11:51is up high, ball one. Rudy, a right -hand hitter.
- 11:57A very white white. Yeah, but they still do have
- 12:00the wedding gown white complete uniform, which
- 12:03I think they wear at home. Oh, is that right?
- 12:09Down low comes Kekich. Ball two -two and out
- 12:12of the right -hand -hitting Joe Rudy. Bill Kane
- 12:14said they lead the league in uniforms. All right.
- 12:18And that's true. They have at least three different
- 12:20sets, possibly four. They are wearing the Kelly
- 12:23Green jerseys with the Fort Knox gold undershirts.
- 12:28Line drive base hit the left field. Michael had
- 12:31short started for it. The ball hit like a bullet
- 12:33was past him. And Rudy is on with a one -out
- 12:38single here in the first inning. It will bring
- 12:39up Reggie Jackson, the right fielder. for Joe
- 12:44Rudy based at number nine on the young season.
- 12:50And nobody in the starting lineup has any more.
- 12:52Sal Bando has nine hits. Reggie Jackson getting
- 12:55off to a slow start is four for 25. Left hand
- 13:00hitter. Jackson always a threat to hit the ball
- 13:05out of the ballpark, however. Kekich comes to
- 13:09the belt and deals up high, ball one. Kekich
- 13:15has a lifetime record of no wins and two losses
- 13:19to Oakland as Reggie Jackson looks down to his
- 13:22third base coach, former Yankee herb, Norrin.
- 13:25Jerry Adair coaches it first. And the 1 -0 pitch.
- 13:30Kripball is in there for a call strike, beautifully
- 13:32drawn by Kekich. Sal Bando is on deck. Reggie
- 13:41Jackson went 0 for 4 last night. Struck out once.
- 13:46Hit one line drive caught in right field by Callison,
- 13:49the pitch. Strike two, ball. A ball and two strikes
- 13:54to the left hand hitting Reggie Jackson. Mustachio,
- 14:07Reggie Jackson. Right down on the end of the
- 14:15bat waiting Ben slightly at the waist Kekich
- 14:17checks first and deal side on Jackson strikes
- 14:23out on a side on delivery from Mike Kekich. He
- 14:27really came down with that one Bill Said it had
- 14:30something new Steve Klein has been going in that
- 14:32side on pitch quite a bit and now Kekich have
- 14:35been very effective Here's Sal Bando Bando has
- 14:41nine hits he's batting 333, 9 for 27. Right hand
- 14:48hitter. Can play a good third base for you, too.
- 14:50He's the team captain. Caggage checks first,
- 14:54Alou holding the runner on. Drops a curve low,
- 14:57gets away from Munson, but he recovers quickly.
- 15:01And Rudy does not try to go. Caggages have wide
- 15:12and left. Mercer in center, and Johnny Callison
- 15:14in right. They're spread out on Vando. So is
- 15:18the infield. The pitch. Get right back up the
- 15:20middle. That's going to get through there for
- 15:21a base hit. Rudy around second base now stops
- 15:24as Mercer charges the ball, gets it back to the
- 15:27infield. And Vando rips one right back up the
- 15:31middle for a single into center field. Base hit
- 15:33number two of the inning. And with runners at
- 15:36first and second, here comes the rookie, Bobby
- 15:38Brooks. Brooks playing center field, Angel Banwall,
- 15:46down to the minors, working out an injury. And
- 15:50I'll tell you, this kid Brooks looked pretty
- 15:52good last night, Bill. First time I'd seen him.
- 15:54He didn't have a base hit, but he showed us good
- 15:56foot, and he hit the ball well, although it was
- 15:59caught every time, right? He's a right -hand
- 16:02batter, holds the bat down on the end. Swings
- 16:04on a curve, it's a fly ball to deep center. Mercer
- 16:07going back, turns under it now. Glove up, and
- 16:10Bobby has it. Rob Brooks drives Mercer to deep
- 16:14center field to take his fly ball. For the Oakland
- 16:17A's, no runs, two hits, no errors. The two are
- 16:21left. At the end of the top half of the first,
- 16:22it's Oakland nothing, and the Yankees coming
- 16:24to back. Everyone loves a bargain, right? Well,

- 17:58Killer Girls. Tony Oliva, expected to be back
- 18:02in action. That youngster Bobby Darwin. Who is
- 18:06off to a red hot start hitting home runs. Rod
- 18:09Carew sees it, Tovar. A lot of good ballplayers.
- 18:13Good seats are available now by mail or over
- 18:15the counter at Old Yankee. Check it out. Thank
- 18:18you. All right, Bill here is Denny McQuain ready
- 18:22to work to Hoss Clark. Clark has nine base hits.
- 18:27He and Thurman Munson lead the club in base hits.
- 18:30They're both nine for 27. And the first pitch
- 18:32is high for ball one. Denny McLean in nine years
- 18:39in the American League has won 128 ball games.
- 18:49He misses outside, two balls and no strikes.
- 18:54High ball three, three and oh. McLean probably
- 18:59does not throw as fast as he used to, but as
- 19:03Phil mentioned earlier, He is a control pitcher.
- 19:08He did not walk anybody in his first and only
- 19:11other start this year. He comes high at a clock
- 19:14and walks him on four pitches. So you start talking
- 19:16about a guy's control, and what does he do? Well,
- 19:19he walks the leadoff man on four deliveries.
- 19:27Seven months in. Nine for 27. The other star
- 19:45was against the Kansas City Royals. He gave up
- 19:49eight hits, but no earned runs. The A's won the
- 19:54ball game three to two. He comes low to Munson.
- 19:56That's ball five. Well, I'll tell you, it looks
- 19:58like he's aiming that ball, Frankie. He hasn't
- 20:01really cut loose yet with a good fastball. He's
- 20:09behind Munson 1 -0. Clark at first. Epstein holding
- 20:12him on and throw over there and Clark gets back.
- 20:16Remark last night looking down there at Epstein
- 20:18about how much weight he had lost. Billy told
- 20:20me 25 pounds. Said he thought it might help him
- 20:25in August. The last couple of months of the season.
- 20:28He and George Scott both have taken off I guess
- 20:31about that same amount. Scott took off so much
- 20:34weight he doesn't look good. I don't know. That's
- 20:36right. So used to seeing that big husky guy come
- 20:39up there. All right, the 1 -0 pitch down to Munson.
- 20:45Here it comes. Swung on. Ground ball through
- 20:47the hole and a left field base hit. It's all
- 20:49seven. Munson keeps it going. He has done it
- 20:51every game of the year. That's his eighth ball
- 20:54game. And he has hit it all, eight of them. We
- 20:58asked Thurman on the Yankee warm -up show, Phil.
- 21:01We were talking about his hitting streak. And
- 21:02my last question was, Thurman, are you superstitious?
- 21:05I said, if you don't get a hit tonight and the
- 21:08streak is broken, you're going to blame me. And
- 21:10he said, no, if it's got to end sometime, nobody
- 21:12ever hit 162. But he's got eight. Of course,
- 21:21it won't be 162 game season this year. It'll
- 21:23be, what, 155 as far as the Yankees are concerned.
- 21:29or possibly less depending on the weather. Right
- 21:31now, Bobby Mercer steps in with runners at first
- 21:34and second and nobody else. McLean deals outside
- 21:39to Mercer. Bobby is hitting 259. At action already
- 21:45in the Oakland A's bullpen, John Blue Moon Odom
- 21:48has begun to warm up. He's a right -hander. The
- 21:54next pitch, fastball. Porn right through for
- 21:57the strike, one and one. No, I didn't say porn.
- 22:04There's no such word. Ball of the strike. No
- 22:10score. Just underway. Bottom half of the first
- 22:13inning. He's got two hits off Kekich, but he
- 22:17left the man stranded. They're playing Mercer
- 22:19to the right side. McClain delivers. Mercer swings,
- 22:22looks it into left field. Rudy's after it. He's
- 22:24under it now. And Joe Rudy makes the catch. So
- 22:29Bobby Mercer going the other way flies out to
- 22:31Rudy one down. It will bring up Roy White, the
- 22:34Yankee left fielder, with a batting average of
- 22:37259. You know, this is, look at this, Bill. I
- 22:42didn't realize this until just now. Clark leading
- 22:44off 9 for 27. Then Munson is 9 for 27. Mercer
- 22:49is 7 for 27. And White's 7 for 27 coming into
- 22:52this game. Mary White will bat left. They play
- 23:03him as they play Mercer, shaded around to the
- 23:05right side. Larry Brown at second base, well
- 23:09over in the hole between first and second. Kapaner
- 23:11is the shortstop behind Clark, who is leading.
- 23:15Drag is called over at the knees. Bando wide
- 23:18of the bag and even with the bag at third base.
- 23:23Rudy's shallow in left field. Brooks over toward
- 23:26the alley. And Reggie Jackson tucked away toward
- 23:30the right field corner. Well, they fail Lewis
- 23:34on deck. McClain ready, kicks and deals, and
- 23:37he misses high. One and one. McClain walks off
- 23:45the reverse slope of the mound, blows on his
- 23:47pitching hand. One ball, one strike, one out.
- 23:56Runners at first and second. The pitch. Wong
- 24:00on. Raps sharply down the first face line. Feel
- 24:02it by Epstein. He goes to the shortstop, Campaneras,
- 24:06for the fourth on Munson at second. No return
- 24:08throw. Munson is out on the fourth play at second.
- 24:15Three -six, Epstein to Campaneras. Clark goes
- 24:18to third. White reaches on the fourth out. They
- 24:24were lucky on that play Frank Mike didn't have
- 24:26a good grip on the ball looked like he was going
- 24:28to hit the runner right in the middle of the
- 24:30back Kevin Harris was lucky to see that ball
- 24:33and make the fourth place It brings up what he
- 24:38failed Oh, we play playing first for the injured
- 24:42Ronnie Bloomberg Bloomberg has a flying ball
- 24:47on the right side He pinched it safely last night,
- 24:50hitting over 600, just a shame he can't play.
- 24:54And the A's are without Dick Green, their second
- 24:56baseman, who has a back problem. All those swings
- 24:59on the first pitch, Bob off on right center field.
- 25:02Bobby Brooks is there, should surround it, and
- 25:04he's got it to retire to the side. So on the
- 25:07first inning, both teams threatened neither score.
- 25:09The Yankees get no runs, one hit, there were
- 25:11no errors and two left. And at the end of one,
- 25:14the score, the Yankees nothing and the A's nothing.

- 26:21anniversary prizes, no obligation. And look at
- 26:26some scores again. Minnesota beat the Red Sox
- 26:293 -1. Baltimore, Kansas City later on. The White
- 26:32Sox 7, Cleveland 5 in 10 innings. And Dick Allen
- 26:36got his third home of the year in the tenth with
- 26:38one on the winner. Detroit at Texas later on
- 26:42the angels beat the Brewers 3 to 1. Metzger at
- 26:45San Diego later on. The Giants beat the Phillies
- 26:488 to 6 and that game was in 10 innings. Bobby
- 26:52Bonds home run and with the man on won it and
- 26:56the rest of the game tonight, right? Dave Duncan
- 27:01the catcher leads off a right hand batter the
- 27:03first pitch to him. Curve ball is hit high and
- 27:05he had a left field. Roy White. Coming in now,
- 27:08after starting back, he's under it, and White
- 27:11makes the catch. One pitch, one away. Duncan,
- 27:15going after that first pitch, didn't have a chance
- 27:17to tell you he was sitting 214, but he has two
- 27:20home runs. Here's Mike Epstein. Epstein, four
- 27:30for 20, 200. Mike said losing the weight he thought
- 27:34would help him in the latter stages of the season.
- 27:36He said last year he just couldn't seem to hit
- 27:38in the last part of the campaign. He feels the
- 27:41first one foul back on the screen. And last season,
- 27:45Epstein tied a record held by several of home
- 27:50runs in four consecutive times at bat. Not in
- 27:54the same game, however. Two in one game, two
- 28:00in the other. Two off left -handers, two off
- 28:02right -handers. He's left and back. Swings to
- 28:06this one, splices it off toward the alley. Let's
- 28:08let it feel. White is there and cannot get to
- 28:10it. The ball drops in front of him. Roy White
- 28:13seemed to pull up, but I really thought that
- 28:17ball would be caught. It looked like it should
- 28:19have been caught unless the white gave, the light
- 28:22gave Roy White a little bit of trouble. The ball
- 28:29fell just in front of Roy. So it goes as a base
- 28:32hit. Puts Epstein on at first base, and it brings
- 28:35up Larry Brown filling in for the injured Dick
- 28:37Green. Green came up with a back spasm last night
- 28:42after bunting. And the finish. Plung on and sliced
- 28:48foul. This is Larry Brown's first time at bat
- 28:52this year. He went into play second base when
- 28:55Green came up with the injury last night. And
- 28:58Green says that he kept feeling that cool wind
- 29:02all night. He said the back began tightening
- 29:05up. He told Larry Brown about the 7th inning
- 29:09to loosen up because he said, I'm going to have
- 29:12to have you. I don't think I'll be able to finish.
- 29:15And sure enough, he couldn't finish. The 0 -1
- 29:16pitch. Dribble on it. Swung on it. And this strikes
- 29:19two. No score in this ball game. Both teams threatened
- 29:24in the first. The A's had bases from Rudy and
- 29:29Vando, but Kekich stranded them. And the Yankees
- 29:35had a walk to Clark and a single by Munson, their
- 29:38first two men up. But they couldn't score. Now
- 29:43we have one out here in the top of the second.
- 29:46Fair of his low this time. One ball and two strikes.
- 29:50The pitcher, Denny McLean, who swings hard, is
- 29:54on deck. By that, I mean, when he makes contact
- 29:59with the ball, he can give it a pretty good ride.
- 30:05No, I knew exactly what you meant, Frank. One
- 30:11ball, two strikes, one out, one on. A little
- 30:13holding on the base runner, Epstein at first.
- 30:16Yankees hope for the double play ball. Here comes
- 30:18the pitch. Missing low for a 2 -2 count. You
- 30:23see the way that Epstein's taking that lead with
- 30:25the left hand on the hip. Probably hasn't felt
- 30:29his bones in so long since he's taken off that
- 30:3125 pounds that he just likes the feel of the
- 30:35new body. Alright. 2 -2 pitch here. Curveball
- 30:44is fouled off. Deckage keeps curving. The right
- 30:48-hand hitting Larry Brown trying to induce the
- 30:51ground ball and hopeful of the double play. McKinney
- 30:54is deep at third toward the line. Michael in
- 30:58about one -third of the way it's short and the
- 31:00same goes for Clark at second. The outfield is
- 31:03fanned out with the deep man Roy White at left.
- 31:07Munson flashes the side. Kekich takes it. Left
- 31:12-hander looks over to first. Sees up steam, hand
- 31:15on hip, and the pitch fouled back off the mass
- 31:18played on by Ron Luciano. He's still looking
- 31:25for the ball and it went all the way to the ball
- 31:28boy who puts it in his mask and he gets it in.
- 31:32That jarred him a little bit Frank, he couldn't
- 31:34locate it. He's showing Don Denginger now about
- 31:40how it felt. He's sort of shaking his head as
- 31:42if he's shaking a cobweb shot. Let's take a second
- 31:46look at that baseball. Luciano's big. Another
- 31:512 -2 pitch. Runner going. Check swing. A ball.
- 31:54Throw to second base. He is out. took the throw
- 32:02and made the tag at second as Thurman Munson
- 32:04fired that ball quickly to get Epstein and that
- 32:07had to be a hit and run and Larry Brown head
- 32:10down did not take a cut at it. That was a tough
- 32:14play Frank he had two balls two strikes on him
- 32:17you're supposed to protect the runner you're
- 32:18absolutely right but the ball was almost in the
- 32:21dirt and if Epstein had made a hook slide to
- 32:24the inside part of the dime and he might have
- 32:26beat that out. 3 -2 pitch. Long on and fast foul
- 32:31past Noren. I thought it had to be a hit -and
- 32:34-run. I was indicating that I'm sure they wouldn't
- 32:37have Epstein stealing. Even with 25 pounds off
- 32:40of him. Mike is a lot stronger than he is speed.
- 32:503 -2 pitch again. Hit on the ground, a short
- 32:53stop. Michael to his left has it. Throws on to
- 32:56first base and the side is retired. Well, the
- 32:59pitcher McLean will have to lead off the third
- 33:01inning, which is in Kekich's favor. For the Oakland
- 33:05A's, no runs, the base hit, no errors. And with
- 33:08Munson throwing Epstein out, nobody left. At
- 33:11the end of the top of the second, it's the Yankees
- 33:13nothing, and the A's nothing. They'll show you
- 33:59how Schaefer stays consistently crisp and bright
- 34:02glass after glass. And that's when you'll want
- 34:05to switch to Schaefer. the Yankees play up at
- 34:28West Point tomorrow, then the Minnesota Twins
- 34:30come in Friday night, Saturday, big cap day,
- 34:32double headed Sunday, and off day Monday, May
- 34:351st, and then the California Angels in. Tuesday
- 34:38night, May the 2nd, and Wednesday afternoon,
- 34:41May the 3rd. Johnny Callison up here in the bottom
- 34:47half of the second. It'll be Callison, McKinney,
- 34:49and Michael. McClain's pitch, big hook serve
- 34:52is high. Ball one. Callison has but one hit.
- 34:57He's been up 15 times. Right -hander Denny McLean
- 35:05ready again. Deals a fastball for a strike and
- 35:07it's one and one. No score here. Bottom half
- 35:16of the second. Denny McLean winds, kicks and
- 35:18delivers. Fastball again and he misses this one.
- 35:22Two balls and one strike. They play Callison
- 35:26to pull in the outfield. Reggie Jackson, deep
- 35:28and right, back toward the warning track, over
- 35:31toward the corner. Larry Brown backs up at second.
- 35:34This pitch is low. Ball three, three and one.
- 35:40Rich McKinney, very wide in third, and Campanaro
- 35:43shaded over toward the back. Joe Rudy again in
- 35:45shallow. Rudy plays a shallow left field out
- 35:49there, Phil, but they haven't hit one over his
- 35:50head yet. 3 -1 pitch coming. Swung on, hit the
- 35:56straightaway center at Steve. Back goes Bobby
- 35:59Brooks, still going back. He's there now and
- 36:01he makes the catch. So Callison is retired on
- 36:05a fly ball to rather deep center. One down. It
- 36:09brings up Rich McKinney, the Yankee third baseman.
- 36:12McKinney is batting 259, 7 for 27. The Yankees
- 36:17have three men in the starting lineup tonight,
- 36:20batting 7 for 27, 259. Mercer, White, and McKinney.
- 36:36McClain's first pitch, outside, ball one. On
- 36:42deck is shortstop Gene Michael. There's no score
- 36:47in the ball game, bottom half of the second inning.
- 36:50Dennis McLean in his second start for Oakland
- 36:53delivers again and ball two says Ron Luciano
- 36:59McLean and Duncan thought that was a little closer
- 37:07McLean turns it loose and he's got a strike this
- 37:15time as McKinney was taking 21 but 10 while losing
- 37:2822 last year for the Senators. Fastball hit on
- 37:31the ground at 3rd. Vando gobbles it up. On the
- 37:34first base to retire Rich McKinney. This is the
- 37:37New York Yankee baseball network. We pause now
- 37:39for station identification. This is Steve Fitzgerald,
- 37:43contact host. Call us weeknights from 8 to midnight.
- 37:46Hear on the fresh air sound of Radio 81, WGY
- 37:50Schenectady. Gene Michael will step in left -handed
- 38:03against McLean. First pitch. Last ball for a
- 38:09strike. Michael is hitting 125. Two for 16. Four
- 38:14runs butted in for Michael. He won one ball game
- 38:17with a basis -loaded triple. This one is bounced
- 38:20to second. Charged by Larry Brown. He's got it.
- 38:22The throw to first to side is out. One, two,
- 38:26three go the Yankees. At the end of two, the
- 38:28score. New York nothing and Oakland nothing.
- 38:32Yes, sir. May I help you? Yeah. Yeah, I'd like
- 38:35to order one of them 72. Okay fine Let's go over
- 38:38the options. Do you want air conditioning? Of
- 38:41course Power steering sure sure AM radio AM FM
- 38:47Stereo radio with a tape deck, huh? Would you
- 38:50like yeah? Yeah, give it to me by the way How
- 38:53many miles per gallon can I expect well if you
- 38:57do a lot of highway driving? Not too much stop
- 39:00and go Seven. Power options are terrific, but
- 39:08they have their price. They rob you of mileage.
- 39:12Well, Getty has a way to make up some of those
- 39:14lost miles. Getty sells only premium for a few
- 39:18cents less per gallon than most other major premiums.
- 39:21So you get more gas for your money, which means
- 39:24you get more miles for your money. And that's
- 39:27nice to have, whether you have a car full of
- 39:30accessories or not. Well, maybe I don't need
- 39:33the power sun visors. Another look at the scoreboard.
- 39:42Minnesota over the Red Sox 3 -1. Woodson the
- 39:44winner, Colt the loser. Baltimore, Kansas City
- 39:46later on. The White Sox in 10 and he's defeated
- 39:49Cleveland 7 -5. Keely the winner, Mingori the
- 39:52loser. Andrews had a grand slam home run in the
- 39:557th. Dick Allen is thirded here in the 10th with
- 39:57one on the winner. Detroit at Texas later on
- 40:00California beat Milwaukee three to one clock
- 40:02the winner Parsons the loser New York at San
- 40:05Diego later on the Giants in ten innings beat
- 40:08the Phillies eight six Johnson the winner Brandon
- 40:11the loser Kingman two homers and Bobby bonds
- 40:13the winning homer in the tenth with one on right
- 40:16Dennis McClain leads off the third and takes
- 40:18a strike. Kekich hits the ball over just above
- 40:21the knees. McClain has been up three times this
- 40:24year without a base hit. Right hand batter. Next
- 40:27pitch to him. Her ball is swung on and missed
- 40:30right to her. No score. The Oakland A's have
- 40:34three bases. The Yankees have one. The A's got
- 40:38two men out in the first inning. Bobby Brooks
- 40:41then hit a long fly ball that was caught by Mercer.
- 40:45A ball is inside to McLean and the count is one
- 40:47and two. McLean does not choke up on the bat.
- 40:54He's right down on the end of it. takes a big
- 40:57cut when he cuts and looks at a called third
- 40:59straight. Second strikeout for Mike Kekich. He
- 41:04got the fastball right past the plate. One down,
- 41:08now the top of the order. Burt Cabaneras tried
- 41:10to bunt himself on leading off the game and was
- 41:12thrown out on a good fielding play by Kekich.
- 41:17Joe Rudy comes out undone. Cabaneras right hand
- 41:22batter. Here comes the pitch to it. Had his second
- 41:28for a strike. He was looking all the way. I'm
- 41:31surprised that Campanaris was not a switch hitter.
- 41:34Oh boy, wouldn't he be something? You know, he
- 41:36can throw with either arm. Uh -huh. He can throw
- 41:39left -handed as well as right -handed. Pitch
- 41:43to it. Curveball. Hit off the end of the bat
- 41:44down the first baseline. Alou comes up with it.
- 41:47Tags the bag in front of Campanaris. Two down.
- 41:56Two quick outs and it brings up Joe Rudy, who's
- 41:59single to left field in the first inning. Rudy
- 42:03had a solid line shot to left for his ninth base
- 42:08hit of the year. Rudy is going to make Keckage
- 42:19wait. Now he gets in. That's out of a closed
- 42:22stance. Left foot in front. of the right foot.
- 42:30Kekich takes the side. Rocks, kicks, and deals.
- 42:33Fastball missing. Low ball one. Kekich takes
- 42:50the side with both feet on the rubber. Delivers
- 42:53a breaking pitch for a strike one and one. A
- 42:55lot more motion than there was pitch that time.
- 42:59One ball, one strike. They were looking forward
- 43:02to going up to West Point tomorrow. That's always
- 43:05a great day. Fun day. The game's going to be
- 43:11played, I believe, starting at 3 o 'clock. 1
- 43:13-1 pitch. Swann not in this. Strike two. I don't
- 43:19believe it's going to start at three. I know
- 43:20it's going to start at three. That's what Bill
- 43:24Cain had in the note he handed me. Two outs,
- 43:28nobody out, no score. Top half of the third inning
- 43:30in Yankee Stadium. Dekich working to Joe Rudy.
- 43:36High. Two balls, two strikes. Yankees have won
- 43:42two and lost five this year. The A's have the
- 43:45reverse record, five wins and two losses. Yankees
- 43:49trying to climb out of the cellar. The A's trying
- 43:51to stay on the roof. And the 2 -2 pitch. Fastball
- 43:57popped up on the right side. Alou is calling
- 44:00for it. Near the bag at first base. And he makes
- 44:04the catch to retire the side. Three up, three
- 44:07down. Nothing across for Oakland. At the end
- 44:10of two and a half, the score. The Yankees nothing
- 44:12and the A's nothing. Macer puts it all together
- 44:18for you. Especially if you enjoy real excellence.
- 44:21Because at Macer, excellence is a matter of quality.

- 45:15Larkin Albany, the most complete and unusual
- 45:17store of its kind in the Northeast. The big cap
- 45:26day doubleheader coming up Sunday with the Minnesota
- 45:28Twins. Oh boys and girls, 14 years of age and
- 45:33under, accompanied by an adult, get a genuine
- 45:35Yankee cap, Frank. All right, just as McClain
- 45:39had to lead off the top half of the inning, Yankee
- 45:41pitcher Kekich leads off the home half. And he
- 45:45looks for the high pitch ball one. Kekich, although
- 45:48a left hand pitcher, is a right hand batter,
- 45:50like McClain, he has been up three times without
- 45:52a base hit. Fastball is in there for a strike,
- 45:56one and one. Reggie Jackson is playing very shallow
- 46:04and right and over towards the line. This pitch
- 46:07low and outside, backhanded out of the very spot,
- 46:10Dave Duncan, the catcher. Bobby Brooks, the center
- 46:13fielder, shades the alley and he's shallow. And
- 46:16Joe Rudy plays a shallow, straightaway left field.
- 46:21Two ball, one strike pitch coming, it is. Fastball
- 46:24is lined out toward center, but Bobby Brooks
- 46:27is right there, backs off a couple of paces and
- 46:29puts it away. One out and it brings up the top
- 46:33of the order. Hey, next time you come out to
- 46:37Yankee Stadium for a night game, just check out
- 46:40our new lighting facilities. Dedication ceremonies
- 46:45of the dramatic new Yankee Stadium area lighting
- 46:48facilities took place this evening at 7 o 'clock
- 46:51before the start of this game. He's represented
- 47:00by President Mike Burke and pitcher Mel Fuddlemeyer.
- 47:07Off clock up there batting left -handed takes
- 47:09high, ball one. Vando in on the grass down the
- 47:12line at third. There's a strike and the count
- 47:21evens one and one. Yes, sir. The new lighting
- 47:32system out here around the outside. Very good.
- 47:35Pitch taken high by Clark. That's the second
- 47:40major step in the redevelopment of the stadium
- 47:43area. During the winter, you might have noticed,
- 47:46if you were out here for any of our games, the
- 47:48old garage and shops on the East 157th Street
- 47:51side were removed. Clark gets the ball down the
- 47:56first baseline foul. Epstein -Doleport could
- 47:59not come up with it, but the ball was just foul.
- 48:03So -called first base umpire, Frank Umach. Sir,
- 48:11the Yankees move right along. The city and everybody
- 48:14helping out in the redevelopment here extended
- 48:17the parking area and now got the new lights up
- 48:19to show you how to get into it. And there'll
- 48:24be more improvements. Two balls, two strikes
- 48:27to Hoff Clark. McClain turns it loose. Pass ball
- 48:30is fouled. Back to the left side and into the
- 48:33seat. Got a hole, two and two. Clark walked in
- 48:41the first inning. McClain walked him on four
- 48:44pitches. He was just a bit erratic to get started.
- 48:49Munson followed with a single. Clark going to
- 48:51second, but then... Mercer flying out, White
- 48:54ratted into a force, Adalou flying out, and the
- 48:56Yankees did not score. 2 -2 pitch. Up high with
- 49:01a breaking ball, and the count is 4 -3 -2 on
- 49:04Hoss Park. Thurman Munson is on deck. Lane has
- 49:17retired seven in a row since Munson's hit. Bark
- 49:20at this one in the outer right center not these
- 49:22Brooks started back now comes in he's calling
- 49:25for the center fielder has it First time bill
- 49:29of the two -game series on the ball fit toward
- 49:32center field of Brooks has made a false step
- 49:35That's right. He picked a good time to do it
- 49:36as you said Frank a towering fly had plenty of
- 49:39time to recover He's had four put outs already
- 49:42having a busy night out there. That's a good
- 49:45jump on that ball We remarked last night, and
- 49:48he's got good speed Here's Thurman. He has the
- 49:53only Yankee base hit. And it extended his hitting
- 49:57streak through the season. Yankees have, this
- 50:02is their eighth game and Munson has hit in all
- 50:04eight. First offering. Sidearm curve up under
- 50:09the chin almost hit him. Playing game around
- 50:15from third base with that one. One ball no strike.
- 50:26Wayne rocks again and delivers. Strike ball one
- 50:30and one. Bobby Mercer waiting on deck. And the
- 50:49one -one pitch. Get back up the middle and that
- 50:52one is going to get through for a base hit. Saw
- 50:54Munson swinging a hot bat for the Yankees. Has
- 50:58another base hit. He is two for two on those
- 51:01with the only two Yankee hits. Bobby Mercer the
- 51:07batter. Munson now has 11 hits to most of any
- 51:18Yankee. Bobby Mercer fly to left. He went the
- 51:25other way, but Joe Rudy caught up with it in
- 51:27the first inning. Epstein will hold Munson on
- 51:31it first. Mercer batting out of a crouch. There
- 51:39goes Munson. The pitch is lined to right field.
- 51:41Bayes hit. Munson around second. Diggs for third.
- 51:44He'll make it. Jackson's throw is into second
- 51:46base. And Bobby Mercer in a rope to right. Yerster
- 52:00Munson broke with the pitch, and Mercer lined
- 52:03it to right field. So the Yankees have runners
- 52:05at first and third, and Roy White has a chance
- 52:09to put the Yankees on the board. Roy's been a
- 52:16sharp grounder to Epstein in the first inning,
- 52:18that the first baseman turned into a forced out
- 52:20at second. So White is 0 for 1. Felipe Alou moves
- 52:27on deck. There is no score here in the bottom
- 52:29half of the third. Second time in the game, the
- 52:33Yankees are runners at first and third. There
- 52:41are two ups. Bando tightens up at third. Campanaro
- 52:45shades toward the bag at second, and Larry Brown
- 52:48deep in the hole between first and second. The
- 52:50pitch, low and away, ball one. Rudy is shallow
- 52:54in left. Brooks not deep out there in right center.
- 52:57Reggie Jackson is the deep man on the outfield
- 53:00as he swings over towards the corner and right.
- 53:04Epstein, left foot on the bag, right foot on
- 53:07the bag, holding the runner on. The pitch is
- 53:10in the dirt, blocked by Duncan. Two balls and
- 53:13no strikes to Roy White. Good speed at first
- 53:31in Bobby Mercer. And at the plate in Roy White.
- 53:34Of course, Thurman -Hunst at third base can move
- 53:37very well, too. Do nothing such coming. Kerrball
- 53:42is high on the air down the right field line.
- 53:45Jackson over near the foul ball. Looking, reaching.
- 53:48He cannot get it. It's a foul ball. Foul ball
- 53:53in the seat. That ball right down the line, Phil,
- 54:05is always an exciting play because you're never
- 54:08sure till the last second whether the outfielder
- 54:11can catch it or whether it's going to be fair
- 54:13or foul. I don't know whether it's going to hit
- 54:15that foul pole, which has happened so often here.
- 54:21Foul pole is in fair territory. Any ball that
- 54:24hits the foul pole is a home run. The pitch to
- 54:28White, swung on and missed, two and two. I wonder
- 54:36why they don't call it the Fair Pole. I don't
- 54:40know. Start a new trend. Yeah. Sudden victory
- 54:53in the Fair Pole. 2 -2 pitch to white. Low one
- 54:57outside. A full count. That will release Bobby
- 55:01Mercer from first. Elton Howard reminded. Three
- 55:03and two count. Two out. And Epstein will back
- 55:07off now and weigh the line instead of holding
- 55:09the runner on. Frank Steele, our engineer, says,
- 55:14call it the unfoul fold. Three and two to Roy
- 55:19White. The set by McClain. Here's his pitch.
- 55:24Wong on. Hit in the air to left center. Rudy
- 55:27coasting over to the left side. He's under it.
- 55:30And the left fielder puts it away and a retire
- 55:32the side. Again, a threat for no score. The Yankees
- 55:36get no runs out of two hits. There were no errors
- 55:38in two left. At the end of three, the totals
- 55:41look like this. For both teams, zero, three,
- 55:43and zero. Nothing to nothing end of three. Just
- 55:49throw a few words at you as we go to the fourth
- 55:51inning. Ladies and gentlemen, here's Phil Vizzuto.
- 55:53Okay, Frank and Reggie Jackson, who struck out
- 55:56his first time up, swings and misses a good curve
- 56:00by Mike Kekich, strike one. Bill White sits down.
- 56:11Lovely yellow. Oh, he's colorblind. I am a little
- 56:16bit. He gouts one of shallow right fields. Coming
- 56:19in fast and going back clock. Look out, a clock
- 56:22makes a beautiful play. It looked like a certain
- 56:25collision between Taliesin and Clark. Reggie
- 56:29Jackson golfed the ball, it didn't hit it hard,
- 56:33and Callison broke back, came in, looked like
- 56:35they were going to run together, but Clark made
- 56:37the catch and Johnny stopped. Fine play by Horace
- 56:40Clark, 1 -0. No, it's a black leather jacket.
- 56:43I saw it say yellow. I don't know why. It's blue.
- 56:47Blue? I really am colorblind. Sal Bando, who's
- 56:52singled his first time up, takes the strike.
- 56:54Say that word. OK. Don't score on the top of
- 56:58the fourth. It must be this cold weather. My
- 57:00eyes are watering. The Czechs are swinging it
- 57:04slow one -on -one. I wonder what the Cardinals
- 57:07are thinking now with that Steve Carlton pitching
- 57:09a one -hitter and he's 3 -0. How about Jerry
- 57:11Royce? Someone said he's 2 -0 down at Houston.
- 57:14That is right at Houston, right? Curve in there,
- 57:17one ball, two strikes. I said do you make deals
- 57:22like that? Then you keep your fingers crossed
- 57:25that they don't do too well. Steve Carlton, 14
- 57:29strikeouts and a one -hitter. Change up just
- 57:34outside, two and two. One out, nobody on. Top
- 57:38of the fourth, no score. On deck, Bobby Brooks.
- 57:47Right hand hitting Sal Bando, crouching over.
- 57:50Swings, bounces, one is short. Team Michael gets
- 57:52a nice big hop. And throws Vando off, there are
- 57:55two away. That'll bring up Brooks who fly deep
- 57:59to center field his first time up. Brooks to
- 58:07batter and Dave Duncan on deck. Wind blowing
- 58:17out towards right field. Brooks right hand batter
- 58:24holds that bat straight up and down. Takes a
- 58:26pitch outside, ball one. Mike rocks back. Change
- 58:40up in the dirt. Gets away from Munson. It's ball
- 58:42two, two and up. Airman hustles back to get it.
- 58:57Teckens and Munson, as are McLean and Duncan,
- 59:01two men that move around more and are warmer
- 59:04than anybody. This is a foul off Luciano's chest
- 59:07protector and it's two balls and a strike. Everybody
- 59:18must have been listening to that game up in Boston.
- 59:21Yeah, my words were getting around. My foul was
- 59:23my buddy done and I told him to get on. The 2
- 59:27-1 pitch. Swing and a miss. Two balls, two strikes.
- 59:35Got a good cut at that pitch, but Kekes has got
- 59:37a good breaking ball tonight. I think Mike's
- 59:42throwing more breaking balls than fastballs so
- 59:44far tonight. The 2 -2 delivery. Low and inside,
- 59:523 and 2. Mike is about three bases. Brook out
- 59:56two has not walked anybody. Right now there are
- 59:59two out, nobody on, and a full count on Bobby
- 1:00:02Brook. The very off pitch. Foul. Back on the
- 1:00:10screen and out of play. to play Brooks straight
- 1:00:27away. Again the 3 -2 delivery. Low and he walked
- 1:00:33him. The first walk of the ball game by Keckens.
- 1:00:38Still with two out, Brooks is at first and now
- 1:00:41Dave Duncan will fly into left field his first
- 1:00:43time up. Felipe Alou holds the bag against Brooks.
- 1:01:01Brooks is fast. We'll see if he tries to steal
- 1:01:03a base there. It's tough to get a good jump off
- 1:01:05a left -hand pitcher. But with two out, he just
- 1:01:09might try it. Stretched by Kekich. Runner does
- 1:01:14not go. The changeup is low and outside ball
- 1:01:16one. Mike Epstein on deck. Duncan looks down
- 1:01:23at Irv Noren, who is flashing some signs in the
- 1:01:26coaching box. Gary Adair, the coach at first.
- 1:01:34Dunk in the right hand better. Stretched by Kekich.
- 1:01:40His curve is hit deep to left foot foul, got
- 1:01:43out in front of a breaking pitch. One ball, one
- 1:01:48strike. Bobby Brooks back to first base. No score
- 1:01:59in the top of the fourth inning. 1 -1 count to
- 1:02:07Dave Duncan. Beckett's ready. Hit down the right
- 1:02:17field line and slicing foul. So Duncan pulled
- 1:02:20one curve deep to left. Tried to hit another
- 1:02:24curve to right, got them both foul. This guy
- 1:02:31has two home runs so far this year. He isn't
- 1:02:36hitting over 200 on, but he leads the ball club
- 1:02:39this early with a couple of home runs. So he
- 1:02:42has some power. He does with that bat. He's right
- 1:02:46down the end of it. All right, Mike is ready.
- 1:02:49Brooks leads the way. It's by Kekich low and
- 1:02:56outside, two and two. The way Dick Williams talks,
- 1:03:01Oakland might use one of these catchers, either
- 1:03:05Tennes or Duncan, as part of a deal. They have
- 1:03:12two pretty good catchers. Tennes did a home run
- 1:03:15last night. All right, now the 2 -2 delivery.
- 1:03:22Curve line, a left field for a base hit. And
- 1:03:26Brooks around second stop. No, he's going to
- 1:03:28go to third. He gave him the decoy. And going
- 1:03:30into second base as Michael threw to third, and
- 1:03:33Gene was decoyed. Nobody yelled for him to throw
- 1:03:36to second base. Bobby broke around his second,
- 1:03:39stopped, and then split into third base. And
- 1:03:42as Roy Weiss threw the ball to Gene Michael,
- 1:03:44Gene turned and whipped it to third. And Dave
- 1:03:47Duncan continued to second base. So it's a single
- 1:03:49to left. And went to second on the throw to third.
- 1:03:55That was a high curve ball. And he jumped all
- 1:03:58over. And now Mike Epstein, who's single to left
- 1:04:00center field in the second inning, then was thrown
- 1:04:02out trying to steal. Two out, two on, no score
- 1:04:08in the top of the fourth. Bobby Brooks leads
- 1:04:17off third. He's got a big lead. And Keckett's
- 1:04:21looking at him. Brooks Fakes coming down the
- 1:04:23line, stops the pitch to Epstein, hits deep to
- 1:04:26right center. Bobby Mercer digging hard, digging
- 1:04:28hard and makes a diving catch and held on to
- 1:04:32the ball. What a play by Bobby Mercer. A sinking
- 1:04:37line drive to deep right center field. Beautiful
- 1:04:40play by Bobby. Saved two runs there easy. So,
- 1:04:46four Oakland, no runs, one base hit, no errors,
- 1:04:49two men left. And now at the end of three and
- 1:04:52a half, it's Oakland nothing and the Yankees
- 1:04:54nothing. You know how it is with that first cold
- 1:05:00beer. It goes down so easy and it tastes so good.
- 1:05:06Now wouldn't it be great if your second beer
- 1:05:08tasted just the same? Just as smooth and just
- 1:05:12as bright. And imagine getting all that first
- 1:05:15beer pleasure every beer through. Man, that'd
- 1:05:20be some kind of beer. And Schaefer Beer is. Bye
- 1:05:27bye! Special announcement for fans 14 years of
- 1:06:07age and under. This Sunday, April 30th, is the
- 1:06:09new date for the Yankees' popular Cap Day, originally
- 1:06:12scheduled in the canceled Baltimore series. Now,
- 1:06:14if you bought tickets for the original Cap Day
- 1:06:16with Baltimore, it would be necessary to exchange
- 1:06:19your tickets. But in any event, don't miss this
- 1:06:21big event. Plus a big doubleheader on Sunday,
- 1:06:24April 30th. Okay, Bill, Felipe Alou takes one
- 1:06:28high and tight ball one. Felipe flies to center
- 1:06:31field his first time up. McLean got out of two
- 1:06:34jams in the first and third innings. Yankees
- 1:06:37had runners at first and third both times. Couldn't
- 1:06:40get that base hit. A slider outside is ball two,
- 1:06:42two and nothing. He retired the Yankees in order
- 1:06:45in the second inning. McLean really not fast
- 1:06:50tonight. What a good pitcher. He's spotting the
- 1:06:54ball on the corners. The 2 -0 pitch is popped
- 1:07:01up right near the plate. Coming back Dave Duncan.
- 1:07:03He's under it and makes the catch. Almost ran
- 1:07:06by it. Hit him right off the hand and it's 1
- 1:07:11-0. That'll bring up Johnny Callison who'll fly
- 1:07:15deep to center field his first time up. A scoreless
- 1:07:18ball game in the bottom of the fourth. All these
- 1:07:23teams coming in here have been pitching Callison
- 1:07:25away, and they've kept him in the center field
- 1:07:28area. They haven't allowed him to pull too much.
- 1:07:30He just will curveball on a left -hander, just
- 1:07:32missed the right field pole. Wow. And he's been
- 1:07:36hitting him deep to Santa, but as we know, it's
- 1:07:38Depp Valley. He broke to one and left. Well,
- 1:07:41now we'll wait. Yes, it's in for a base hit.
- 1:07:43Johnny's going to try for two. The throw to second.
- 1:07:47Not in time, and Callison in with a hustling
- 1:07:49double. Oh, he must've heard Bill White. They've
- 1:07:53been pitching him away, and Johnny's been trying
- 1:07:55to pull it and hitting the center field. So,
- 1:07:58Callison went the opposite way, pulled Joe Rudy
- 1:08:01out there, and Johnny kept hustling and is in
- 1:08:04with a double. His first double of the year,
- 1:08:07his second base hit of the season. Little huddle
- 1:08:11out on the mound. Bando, Duncan, and McLean,
- 1:08:16and with one out the bat of Rich McKinney, who
- 1:08:18bounced the third his first time up. The more
- 1:08:22I see that Sal Bando, the more impressed you've
- 1:08:25got to be with him. He not only hits the ball
- 1:08:27well for Oakland, he catches everything, but
- 1:08:29he seems to be the on -the -field leader. He's
- 1:08:32always out there when somebody gets in trouble.
- 1:08:34Just a minute ago, I saw him move left fielder
- 1:08:37Joe Rudy into left field where he got white ball.
- 1:08:41All right, he is a good field general. All right,
- 1:08:46McLean set. Tonight on Pitch to McKinney outside
- 1:08:49ball one. Lane keeps blowing on his hand. Denny
- 1:09:02ready again. Low, ball two, two and nothing.
- 1:09:15Outfield straight away on Rich McKinney. One
- 1:09:18man out, no score on the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:09:23Denny Calliton with a good lead at second. McLean's
- 1:09:27pitch is a breaking pitch, but outside ball three,
- 1:09:30three and upping. On deck, Gene Michael. Time
- 1:09:33is called now, as Dave Duncan wants to have a
- 1:09:35word with Denny McLean. Meanwhile, this is the
- 1:09:38New York Yankee baseball network, and we pause
- 1:09:40for station identification. This is your guy,
- 1:09:44High Agent. Join me for your kind of music, weekdays
- 1:09:47three to seven, here on the fresh air sound of
- 1:09:49Radio 81, WGY Schenectady. All right, McLean
- 1:10:00is ready. Three and all the count to McKinney.
- 1:10:03There's one right in there. It wasn't a fastball,
- 1:10:05it was a breaking pitch. Three balls and a strike.
- 1:10:13McLean has walked one man. That was Horace Clark
- 1:10:15leading off in the bottom of the first. The 3
- 1:10:20-1 pitch. Breaking pitch just outside. McLean
- 1:10:23didn't like that call, but it's ball four. Second
- 1:10:27walk given up by Denny. And it brings up Gene
- 1:10:30Michael. The stick bounced to second base his
- 1:10:32first time up. Callison at second. McKinney at
- 1:10:36first with one out. Joe Rudy playing very shallow
- 1:10:42in left. Bobby Brooks shallow in center. And
- 1:10:45Reggie Jackson moves in a bit in right field
- 1:10:47now. They got three fine throwing arms out there.
- 1:10:50And Callison will really have to hustle on a
- 1:10:53base set to score. All right, Gene Michael, a
- 1:11:01switch hitter batting left -handed against McLean.
- 1:11:05And he comes to the belt. His pitch is hit high
- 1:11:08in the air to right field, going way back. Jackson
- 1:11:11back, a home run for Gene Michael. Holy cow.
- 1:11:16Again, with Reggie Jackson playing shallow. Gene
- 1:11:21Michael hit it over his head, into the seat.
- 1:11:24A big three -run home run for Gene Michael. His
- 1:11:28second three. RBI hit of this year, he had a
- 1:11:32triple with the bases loaded earlier in the year.
- 1:11:35And the Yankees go out front three to nothing.
- 1:11:39Bill, look at that crowd. Well, some other kids
- 1:11:42are going to be happy. The St. Michael's home
- 1:11:44at 1380 Arthur Hill Road in Staten Island. They'll
- 1:11:49get nine baseball gloves, compliment of ABCO.
- 1:11:58All right, Bill, on the first pitch to Mike Hecky
- 1:12:01is strike one cause. Isn't that apropos St. Michael's
- 1:12:05home and Gene Michael hit it? He checks his swing
- 1:12:08and files it off. It's nothing in two. So Gene
- 1:12:13Michael now with seven RBIs to take the team
- 1:12:17lead in that department. A triple with the bases
- 1:12:22loaded to drive in three, a home run with two
- 1:12:24on to drive in three more. McLean winds his pitch,
- 1:12:31strike three called, and then Kekich is out of
- 1:12:34there, so that walk was a big one. First strikeout
- 1:12:38for McLean, two men are out. And the batter,
- 1:12:42Horace Clark, who has walked and flied to center.
- 1:12:50So Gene Michael, he has only three base hits,
- 1:12:55including this home run, but seven runs batted
- 1:12:57in. Pitch to Harris, high ball one. McLean winds,
- 1:13:17fast ball, slight foul down the left field line,
- 1:13:19back into the seats out of play. That ball really
- 1:13:25carried that Michael Hitzbill. Yeah, I was just
- 1:13:28wondering if Michael had ever hit a home run
- 1:13:30into the right field seat here before. I know
- 1:13:33he didn't last here, of course he only hit the
- 1:13:35one down the left field line is powerful. Strike
- 1:13:37two, ball and two strikes. He beat somebody with
- 1:13:40that home run. He did. In the last of the night.
- 1:13:43He makes his homeless count. He doesn't hit many.
- 1:13:46But they are clutch home runs. A ball, two strikes,
- 1:13:51two out. The Yankees in front, three to nothing.
- 1:13:57High ball two, two and two. Blue Moon Odom up
- 1:14:02and warming up for the Oakland A's on left field.
- 1:14:08Odom had gotten up in the first inning also when
- 1:14:11the plane got in trouble. Slight foul down the
- 1:14:17left field line, back into the seats again and
- 1:14:19out of play. Harris going with the pitch. And
- 1:14:24the count is two and two. On deck Thurman Munson
- 1:14:34who is two for two tonight. McLean's pitch is
- 1:14:42hit deep to right field but it's curving and
- 1:14:46goes foul. Clark got a round on a breaking pitch.
- 1:14:52That went out of another home run for the Yankees.
- 1:15:01Wind up by McLean. Low and inside. Ball three,
- 1:15:05three and two. Duncan throws the ball over the
- 1:15:11head of McLean and Larry Brown comes in from
- 1:15:13second base to retrieve it. The payoff pitch
- 1:15:24to Harris. Low ball four. So McLean having a
- 1:15:29rough inning here. Walking two, giving up a double
- 1:15:35and a home run. And now Thurman -Munson, who
- 1:15:38is two for two, single or left in the first,
- 1:15:40single or center in the third. Thurman, who was
- 1:15:43hit in eight straight ball games. All the games
- 1:15:48the Yankees have played this year. With a good
- 1:16:01lead at first, McLean sets, throw to first base,
- 1:16:05Clark dives back in time. Thurman asking for
- 1:16:19time as he gets ready. Now he sets throw to first
- 1:16:22and Clark is back again. stretched by McLean.
- 1:16:36There goes Clark. The ball is fouled back in
- 1:16:38the upper deck and out of play. What a jump Horace
- 1:16:41had. But Thurman had a nice slow curve ball and
- 1:16:44with Larry Brown breaking from second base, he
- 1:16:47had a big hole between first and second. Tried
- 1:16:50to slap it there, but got under it and fouled
- 1:16:53it back in the upper deck. Dickhouser flashes
- 1:16:57the sign to Thurman -Munson and Horace Clark.
- 1:17:06One strike on Muntz. Two out, the Yankees lead
- 1:17:103 -0. In the bottom of the fourth inning. McLean
- 1:17:14ready. There goes Clark again. Another one fouled
- 1:17:17back and out of play. And again, Clark had the
- 1:17:19base stolen. And you hear the roar as the fan
- 1:17:24in the upper deck had it, dropped it, it came
- 1:17:26back on the net and onto the field. Nothing and
- 1:17:33to the count. Todd McLean looks in for the sign.
- 1:17:53Stretched by McLean. He's pitching to pitch out,
- 1:17:56but that time Harris was not going. Then Dick
- 1:18:05Hauser goes through five or six signs. Hudson
- 1:18:08now has to protect the plate. He's got a ball
- 1:18:10and two strikes on him. Quick throw to first.
- 1:18:16Clark is back. McLean ready. Strike three, Munson
- 1:18:27caught looking. That was a weird inning for McLean.
- 1:18:30Two strikeouts, two walks, two hits. But the
- 1:18:33Yankees pick up three runs on the two bases.
- 1:18:37No errors and a man left. And at the end of four
- 1:18:40full innings, it's the Yankees three, Oakland
- 1:18:42nothing. says that Henry Aaron has hit his 643rd
- 1:18:55home run of his career. That gives Atlanta a
- 1:19:002 -1 lead over St. Louis after one inning of
- 1:19:03play. So that's Aaron's fourth home run of this
- 1:19:09season and his 643rd as Atlanta leads St. Louis
- 1:19:142 -1 at the end of one inning of play. All right,
- 1:19:19Bill Larry Brown bounced the shortest first time
- 1:19:21out takes the curve low ball one afternoon, Minnesota
- 1:19:25beat Boston 3 to 1 and Kansas City's playing
- 1:19:30Baltimore the birds have lost three strings Chicago
- 1:19:34beat Cleveland 7 -5 on Rich Allen's attempt home
- 1:19:3710th inning home run Richie's third of the year
- 1:19:43No score Detroit at Texas California beat Milwaukee
- 1:19:473 to 1 And that's all we have here. Okay, Bill,
- 1:19:52a 1 -1 count on Larry Brown. Mike Jalivis is
- 1:19:54inside, two balls and a strike. I heard Redwood,
- 1:20:03Dick Allen said that he's very happy in Chicago
- 1:20:07playing for the White Sox and this is it. He's
- 1:20:10traded again, he's going to quit. That's what
- 1:20:13he said at Los Angeles about this time last year.
- 1:20:18And two years ago, he said the same thing at
- 1:20:21St. Louis. It's amazing. That guy has a good
- 1:20:25year every year. I guess I'd better start calling
- 1:20:28him Dick, too. Yeah. Yeah, he is better than
- 1:20:33I am. Two balls, two strikes. On right hand,
- 1:20:37hitting Larry Brown. Curve, hit on the ground,
- 1:20:40in the hole. Michael backhands it. Throw it to
- 1:20:43first. They got him, holy cow, what a play by
- 1:20:47the six. I mean, he came up firing. Now, that
- 1:20:51was a difficult play. He was going full speed
- 1:20:53in the hole, deep on the edge of the grass, came
- 1:20:57up throwing it throughout Larry Brown. And let's
- 1:21:02see, we have a pinch hitter now. Coming on. Hendrick
- 1:21:15is coming on to bat for McLean. George Hendrick.
- 1:21:30Played with Iowa and Oakland last year. With
- 1:21:37Iowa that is 333 -21 home run. Ice is one foul.
- 1:21:42Boy, he whips that bat. He's loose as a goose
- 1:21:45up there. He looks like Aaron, huh? He gets that
- 1:21:48bat and wraps it behind his ear. Big right -handed
- 1:21:50hitter. Lean. Looks to be about, what, 6 '3"?
- 1:21:54Oh, let's see what it is here. 6 '3"? You hit
- 1:21:58it on the nose. All right, how about the weight?
- 1:22:00You got those... 175. 195. Would you believe
- 1:22:04it? Aye, one -on -one. Is he that big? That's
- 1:22:09what it says here. 6395 pounds. Boy, he is tall.
- 1:22:16Hey, he looks like Don Quinn Dennis. We should
- 1:22:18play with him. Just a little bit. One -one delivery.
- 1:22:21Broke. Brown ball up the middle and back at second.
- 1:22:23That'll be a face hit. Clark's up with it, but
- 1:22:25can't make the throw. So the play by Michael
- 1:22:29now looms even larger. They'd have had runners
- 1:22:32at first and second. An infield hit. Clark backhanded
- 1:22:35the ball over the bag, but was going towards
- 1:22:37left field. Couldn't throw it. That's the fifth
- 1:22:40hit for Oakland. And now Bert Campanaro hits
- 1:22:44to the box and bounced out to first base. Yankees
- 1:22:52in front three to nothing here in the top of
- 1:22:54the fifth. One out. Infield in double play depth,
- 1:23:05with the exception of Alou, who's holding the
- 1:23:07bag against George Hendricks. Mr. Campanarity,
- 1:23:13front foul in the Yankee dugout. In this series,
- 1:23:17Oakland has used three pinch hitters, and they've
- 1:23:20come through with three base hits. Three for
- 1:23:21three. Yankees doing very well in the pinch hitting
- 1:23:25department, too. Five for eight, and a sacrifice
- 1:23:31fly. One strike on Campaneras. The stretch by
- 1:23:46Mike. And he was going to bunt again, but this
- 1:23:48one is low on his one -on -one. Alou and McKinney
- 1:23:55were charging in that time. Campaneras with outstanding
- 1:23:58speed. One man out. Hendrick leads to a first
- 1:24:09base. Curve is high, ball two, two and one. You
- 1:24:18know, one thing about this Oakland club, Phil,
- 1:24:20they don't try to get all their runs at once.
- 1:24:22You were yet last night with Rudy up on a man
- 1:24:25on first, Keith Bunnett. That sets that whole
- 1:24:27ball game up because Bando came through with
- 1:24:30a triple to tie the ball game. Absolutely. With
- 1:24:34a club like this, as you say, they figure a run
- 1:24:36here, run there, then a long ball. The pitch
- 1:24:40bounced slowly to third, or they're going to
- 1:24:42have to hurry to get him. McKinney throws. Safe!
- 1:24:45Safe at first base. I tell you, he can fly. That
- 1:24:50brief one second of hesitation, where the technique
- 1:24:53was going to pick it up on McKinney, caught him.
- 1:24:55That base hit. He had tried a bunt twice, and
- 1:24:59that one was a swinging bunt. There's actually
- 1:25:03no such thing as a swinging bunt, but it had
- 1:25:05the same effect. He gets an infield hit. He can
- 1:25:09really get down that line. I still say the play
- 1:25:15by Gene Michaels so far has kept Oakland from
- 1:25:18having a real big inning. Instead of the bases
- 1:25:21loaded and nobody on, they have runners at first
- 1:25:24and second and one out. Joe Rudy, single or left,
- 1:25:27and popped to first base. Yankees lead 3 -0 top
- 1:25:32of the fifth. Hendrick at second, Campanaris
- 1:25:39at first. Stretched by Kekich. Mike Kicks delivers
- 1:25:49a curve hit deep to left center field, way out
- 1:25:52there. Roy White is back there though and Mercer
- 1:25:55and Mercer makes the catch. Both runners could
- 1:25:58have tagged up in advance, but they didn't they
- 1:26:00played it halfway and a long drive by Joe Rudy
- 1:26:04caught by Bobby Mercer And deep left center field
- 1:26:07the wind blowing from left toward right field
- 1:26:11held that ball up That have been a long run in
- 1:26:14a lot of ballpark, but not Yankee Stadium Reggie
- 1:26:19Jackson struck out in the first was robbed of
- 1:26:21a base hit on a fine over -the -shoulder catch
- 1:26:23by Horace Clark in the fourth Two out and two
- 1:26:27on. Yankees out in front three to nothing. Mike
- 1:26:36is ready, comes to the belt. Curve is a little
- 1:26:41bit high, ball one. They play Jackson way around
- 1:26:53towards right. Another curved swing and a missed
- 1:27:00one -on -one. Jackson does not get cheated on
- 1:27:06his swing. He really swings hard. Mike gets the
- 1:27:20sign from Munson. Runners lead away. The curve,
- 1:27:25check to swing that time and it's low. Two balls
- 1:27:28and a strike. Tekich is keeping that ball in
- 1:27:36good spots on Jackson. Either down and in or
- 1:27:39down and away. Doesn't want to give one up to
- 1:27:42him. Yankees leading 3 -0 top of the fifth. Two
- 1:27:48out and two on. Mike, with a long look in, has
- 1:27:57the sign. His pitch swing and a miss. Two balls,
- 1:28:06two strikes. And I tell you, he had good motion
- 1:28:08on that one. He had to have good motion because
- 1:28:10the pitch was up around the letters. If I were
- 1:28:14Reggie Jackson here, I'd be looking for that
- 1:28:17sidearm curve ball. He got him on that one the
- 1:28:20first time up. Two balls, two strikes, two out,
- 1:28:26two men on. He's probably throw the fastball
- 1:28:31right by it. Stretched by Kekich. He looks. Breaking
- 1:28:38pitch and it's low. Three and two. So he did
- 1:28:41not come side on but would not give in and throw
- 1:28:44the fastball. He has not thrown a fastball. He's
- 1:28:47thrown five pitches to Jackson, all breaking
- 1:28:49pitches. Now the runners will be off with the
- 1:28:52pitch. Three and two and two up. They lead away
- 1:29:02and that Campanaris can fly. Taking a big lead.
- 1:29:06The stretch. Mike looking at Campanaris. There
- 1:29:11they go. The curve is high. Ball four on the
- 1:29:13bases to load it. I said you lose daughter to
- 1:29:16sneak in behind campaign errors a quick throw
- 1:29:19over there would have picked them off Second
- 1:29:22walk given up by tech it and the bases are loaded
- 1:29:25Two men are out and here's that man Bando. He's
- 1:29:30single a center in the first bounce is short
- 1:29:32in the fourth But it was his big triple last
- 1:29:36night that tied up the ballgame drove in two
- 1:29:39runs Red Bean gets up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:29:53Hendrick at third. Campaneras at second. Jackson
- 1:29:56at first. Hendrick coming down the line, but
- 1:30:01Keckett's not even looking at him. And time is
- 1:30:03called as Bando has something in his eye. Oh,
- 1:30:10he's got it out. And we're ready to go. All right,
- 1:30:20Mike rocks back. Mr. Bando almost hit him, and
- 1:30:25Munson, they had a play on his third, and the
- 1:30:27ball popped out of Munson's glove. Ball one on
- 1:30:34Sal Bando. Bando has a double, a triple, and
- 1:30:41three runs batted in on the year. Mike ready
- 1:30:47again. Curve outside, ball two, two and up it.
- 1:31:04Face on balls, cross McLean in the bottom of
- 1:31:09the fourth inning. The 2 -0 pitch, ground ball
- 1:31:14hit the third, McKinney is up with it, goes to
- 1:31:16clock in time for the fourth play. And that Jackson
- 1:31:20went at the clock and split about ten feet past
- 1:31:23them, but Harris jumped over them. They get the
- 1:31:27fourth from third to second and four Oakland.
- 1:31:29No runs, two base hits. No errors, three men
- 1:31:33left. And at the end of four and a half, it's
- 1:31:36the Yankees three and Oakland nothing. The new
- 1:31:42pitcher for the Oakland A's is Johnny Lee Blue
- 1:31:45Moon Odom. A fellow from Macon, Georgia. Blue
- 1:31:48Moon last year had a bit of arm trouble. He did
- 1:31:52get into 25 ball games, completed only three.
- 1:31:57He won 10 games and lost 12 for the Oakland A's.
- 1:32:03Blue Moon, Odom. That surgery on his right elbow
- 1:32:07was a 1970 bill? Mm -hmm. That's rough there.
- 1:32:12Not too many pitches come back after surgery
- 1:32:14on their pitching elbow. Would you like to see
- 1:32:18this young kid do well? He's quite a competitor.
- 1:32:28He'll be facing Mercer wide and aloof. Wears
- 1:32:34number 13 on his back, so he's not the least
- 1:32:37bit superstitious. All right, he's ready to go.
- 1:32:51So, Denny McLean worked four innings. He gave
- 1:32:54a five -hit, walked three, struck out one, checked
- 1:32:58that, struck out two, and allowed three runs.
- 1:33:02The first earned run scored off Denny McLean
- 1:33:04this year. Bobby Mercer lined to left and lined
- 1:33:10a single to right. Yankee's out in front three
- 1:33:14-nothing. We're in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:33:30Blue moon ready. Fastball is low. Ball one. He
- 1:33:34threw that ball hard. Right hander into the windup.
- 1:33:51Fastball outside. Ball two. Two and nothing.
- 1:33:59Sometimes the weather like this, some pitchers
- 1:34:01who've had arm trouble worry about it, but this
- 1:34:04fellow is cutting loose. It's good to see him
- 1:34:06do that. The 2 -0 pitch. Line to right field,
- 1:34:10curving, foul. Boy, Bobby was looking for the
- 1:34:13fastball. Got it. Drilled it deep into the seats,
- 1:34:16but fouled by about 20 feet. On the big scoreboard,
- 1:34:23the Yankee RBI lead is Gene Michael with 7, Bobby
- 1:34:26Mercer with 5. And now Bobby has the time at
- 1:34:35the plate. Bottom of the 50, Yankees lead 3 -0.
- 1:34:48Wind up by Blue Moon. Fastball is low and it's
- 1:34:513 and 1. to see him sign up the way he drew people
- 1:35:09in the ballpark. On the road, he had quite a
- 1:35:14year. Foul to the left of the plate, it's three
- 1:35:17and two. Jim Woods, the Oakland announcer, said
- 1:35:21he was talking to Willie Mays, and Willie has
- 1:35:23a way to get blue into the league. He said, why
- 1:35:26doesn't blue do the same thing I did with Sonam?
- 1:35:28Sign for 50 and borrow 50. Pay the 50 back over
- 1:35:3110 years, but don't make any payments on the
- 1:35:34last 50. How do you like that the payoff pitch
- 1:35:40strike three called Bobby Mercer called out on
- 1:35:44strike So blue moon autumn first man he faces
- 1:35:49the tough Mercer he strikes him out and now raw
- 1:35:52white bounce to first and fly to luck I don't
- 1:36:00know where the Finley would go for that though
- 1:36:04Evidently, he stole them, didn't he? Yeah. I
- 1:36:11won out. Nobody on. Hold them into the windup.
- 1:36:19Foul out of play. Back in the upper deck. Well,
- 1:36:23I gotta tell you, Bill, laid down today with
- 1:36:28a fella named... ...Liddy. Tom Letty, and he
- 1:36:35had a hole in one. It's one of the prettiest
- 1:36:39sights and one of the most exciting things you
- 1:36:41ever want to see. Even for you non -golfers,
- 1:36:45a hole in one pitches high, and it's one on one.
- 1:36:51On the longest par three hole on our course,
- 1:36:54he hit a forward, and you could see it all the
- 1:36:56way. Hit on the green, take two bounces, and
- 1:36:59disappear right in the cup. You ever got a hole
- 1:37:03in one? I got one hole in one. Oh, and it's something.
- 1:37:08Lowball 2 -2 -1. You gotta buy drinks. Yes, sir.
- 1:37:12You gotta buy everybody who has played golf,
- 1:37:16or had played that day, a drink. But it really
- 1:37:20doesn't cost you, because everybody puts up a
- 1:37:22dollar and you get whatever the pot is. He got
- 1:37:24about $240. Not bad. In case the internal revenue
- 1:37:30is... Listening in. That pitch low inside. Ball
- 1:37:34three. Three and one. I want to tell you what
- 1:37:39was so tough about it. He was not my partner.
- 1:37:42He got a shot. He got a stroke on that hole so
- 1:37:45he had zero for the hole. How can you beat that?
- 1:37:48He can't even tie it. It cost me a few bob but
- 1:37:54I was very happy. Had a couple of Dr. Peppers
- 1:37:59and that was it. Ground ball to first base that's
- 1:38:02being up with it runs over makes the play unassisted
- 1:38:05and there are two away And now fully Bayaloo
- 1:38:15line to center and foul to the catcher To out
- 1:38:25Yankees in front three to nothing we're in the
- 1:38:27bottom of the fifth inning Johnny Callison, which
- 1:38:49is low inside, ball one. The 1 -0 delivery. Little
- 1:39:08bit high, ball two, 2 -0. Question marks on the
- 1:39:16pitching staff for Oakland. Blue moon, Odom one.
- 1:39:21Dobson, another one. 2 -0 pitch, fouled again
- 1:39:30and got Luciano. That's three times that Ron
- 1:39:34Luciano has been hit with foul tips. Twice on
- 1:39:38the mask, once on the chest protector. Dave Duncan
- 1:39:53gives the sign to Odom. His pitch is fouled back
- 1:40:00in the upper deck and out of play and the count
- 1:40:02is even at two and two. It looks like the Yankees
- 1:40:10hitters are just looking for that number one,
- 1:40:12that fastball, and they're really getting good
- 1:40:15rips at it. They are. I guess they figure with
- 1:40:19the cold weather and blue moon. We mentioned
- 1:40:22before, maybe a little worried. Doesn't want
- 1:40:24to throw too many breaking pitches. A little
- 1:40:28chilly here tonight. Denny McLean was blowing
- 1:40:30on his hand, going to his mouth just about after
- 1:40:32every pitch. The 2 -2 pitch, just outside another
- 1:40:38blazer that time. It's 3 -2. Well, you know,
- 1:40:44Felipe will be looking for the fastball here.
- 1:40:48Three balls, two strikes, two outs. Total mind.
- 1:40:54Passball is low and inside, and Alou gets a walk.
- 1:40:58This is the New York Yankee Baseball Network.
- 1:41:00We pause now for station identification. This
- 1:41:05is Steve Fitz, your contact host. Follow us weeknights
- 1:41:08from eight to midnight. Hear on the fresh air
- 1:41:10sound of Radio 81, WGY Schenectomy. Johnny Callison,
- 1:41:22who started the big three run uprising for the
- 1:41:24Yankees in the fourth inning with an opposite
- 1:41:26field double, is up there. Johnny also applied
- 1:41:29deep to center. He's one for two on the night.
- 1:41:33Alou leads away. Pitch to Callison. Swing and
- 1:41:36a foul to the left of the plate. Strike one.
- 1:41:42Johnny has that right hand. Well, it's stinging
- 1:41:46a little bit right now. He hit it off the end
- 1:41:48of the bat. making a fist. It's the kind of night
- 1:41:57you got to hit him right on the trademark. Best
- 1:42:02ball pulled, he got that one on the trademark,
- 1:42:04but just bowled down the right field line. Nothing
- 1:42:10and two. Epstein holding the bag against Duluth.
- 1:42:22Yankees with all three runs in the fourth on
- 1:42:24the three -run homer by the stick, Gene Michael.
- 1:42:35Odom leans over to get the sign. Callison now
- 1:42:40has the time. Odom ahead of him, 0 -2. Still
- 1:42:55nothing in two. Oh, another new ball thrown out
- 1:43:08to Odom. On deck, Rich McKinney. Odom is ready.
- 1:43:28for a base hit. A loser on second. He's going
- 1:43:32to third. The throw comes in at third, not in
- 1:43:34time. And I want to tell you, that was as pretty
- 1:43:38a play as you'd want to see. I don't know whether
- 1:43:42it was a blooper pitch, but it was a high, slow
- 1:43:45change -up curve. And Johnny Callison just backhanded
- 1:43:49like a tennis stroke over Vando's head. You can
- 1:43:52see the look on Vando's face, Bill. Johnny waited
- 1:43:55on that ball. Well, it just looped it out there.
- 1:43:58Usually on a pitch like that, if you're trying
- 1:44:00to pull the ball, you're out in front. You either
- 1:44:02pop it up or hit it on the ground in second base.
- 1:44:05So when you can handle a pitch like that after
- 1:44:08being thrown so many basketballs and still waiting
- 1:44:11to hit it out there, your timing is coming around
- 1:44:14pretty good. That's for sure. So the Yankees
- 1:44:17have run it at first and fair. And I tell you,
- 1:44:20Felipe hasn't lost any speed because Rudy made
- 1:44:23a great throw in the third but Alou kept going
- 1:44:25and slid in safely. Now Rich McKinney bounce
- 1:44:27the third and walk. Pops it up. The catcher Dave
- 1:44:32Duncan in foul territory coming back near the
- 1:44:34screen. Makes the catch. So the Yankees are out
- 1:44:38of there. No runs. A base hit. No errors and
- 1:44:42two men left. And now at the end of five full
- 1:44:44innings it's the Yankees three and Oakland nothing.
- 1:44:51Bobby Brooks. Line to base hit the left field.
- 1:44:55He hit a bullet past McKinney. Roy White up with
- 1:44:58it and Brooks is on. Brooks had fly to center
- 1:45:02and walk before singling sharply to left. That's
- 1:45:06the seventh base hit. For Oakland, it brings
- 1:45:09up Dave Duncan who has fly to left and single
- 1:45:11to left. I think he's leading 3 -0 top of the
- 1:45:22sixth. Stretched by Mike. His pitch fouled back
- 1:45:29off the screen, strike one. On deck, Mike Epstein.
- 1:45:41Mike has hit the ball hard twice tonight. Bobby
- 1:45:55Brooks leading off first. Alou playing in back
- 1:45:59of the runner. High and outside, one -on -one.
- 1:46:04And we're going to get some action now in the
- 1:46:05Yankee bullpen. Duncan looks down at Irv Noren,
- 1:46:16coaching at third. Change -up, hitting the ground
- 1:46:25a third, could be two. McKinney to Clark, back
- 1:46:28to first, double play! And Horace Clark hung
- 1:46:32in there that time, with the speedy Bobby Brooks
- 1:46:35right on top of him and sliding in to Horace.
- 1:46:37Horace got rid of it, completed the double play,
- 1:46:40and then was knocked down. This is the new Horace
- 1:46:44Clark we're seeing this year, big double play.
- 1:46:49And they were two out, and a batter now. The
- 1:46:53single was cut down trying to steal in the second
- 1:46:55and then robbed of a base hit on a great play
- 1:46:58by Mercer in the fourth. Side armor to Epstein
- 1:47:06in there, strike one call. Time is called, Epstein
- 1:47:17wants Luciano to look at the ball. He does and
- 1:47:21says nothing wrong with it. He's still leading
- 1:47:28three to nothing. Another side armor, but this
- 1:47:38one is a little low, breaking pitch, and it's
- 1:47:401 -1. 1 -1 pitch outside, 2 -1. has been in there
- 1:48:08all the way. Denny McLean started for Oakland,
- 1:48:11went four innings. There's a fastball right down
- 1:48:14the middle, two and two. Two balls, two strikes,
- 1:48:28two outs. Kekich into the windup. Down by a low.
- 1:48:43Epstein hung in there that time as Kekes came
- 1:48:45by the way of first base. And we'll have a 2
- 1:49:04-2 pitch coming up. Here it is and it's a curve
- 1:49:08low. ground hard base hit to right field. Epstein
- 1:49:33has done very well against the left -hand pitcher
- 1:49:36tonight. He's hit the ball hard three times,
- 1:49:38two base hits. And that's base hit number eight.
- 1:49:42So you can see how important that double play
- 1:49:44was now, just as Michael's fielding play in the
- 1:49:48fifth inning was. And here's Larry Brown, who
- 1:49:51was robbed of that base hit in the fifth and
- 1:49:54bounced out to Michael, his first time up. Allier
- 1:50:03is on deck. And the event that Larry Brown gets
- 1:50:08on, Allier will pinch hit for Blue Moon Odom.
- 1:50:12There's a pitch in there. Strike one call. Two
- 1:50:21men are out. Yankees leading 3 -0 in the top
- 1:50:24of the sixth. momentarily. The Oakland bench
- 1:50:36getting on Ron Luciano and he's just thrown Dick
- 1:50:39Williams out of the game I do believe. Dick Williams
- 1:50:42really getting on Ron Luciano and he's been ejected
- 1:50:46from the ball game. And Dick Williams who has
- 1:50:51really let his hair grow long like some of his
- 1:50:55ballplayers was getting on Luciano and That's
- 1:51:01enough, and Williams kept talking and Luciano
- 1:51:04waved him out. So now Williams comes out to have
- 1:51:07another say. But it's too late now, he has been
- 1:51:11thrown out of the game. Trying to get a $25 worth.
- 1:51:15Yeah. Stay too long, it might cost you 50 though.
- 1:51:21That's right. Because here comes Frank Umont.
- 1:51:30He's got a nickel word in though before he left.
- 1:51:32He's got 25 dollars and five cents worth. Alright
- 1:51:39Bill. So Dick Williams is out of the game. It's
- 1:51:46one strike on Larry Brown. Stretched by Kekich.
- 1:51:51Kich is outside one -on -one. One ball, one strike.
- 1:52:12Curve hit on the ground is short. Gene Michael
- 1:52:14up with it, flips the clock for the fourth play.
- 1:52:18Oh, the Yankees with good defense tonight. For
- 1:52:22Oakland, no runs, two hits, no errors, a man
- 1:52:24left. At the end of five and a half, it's the
- 1:52:26Yankees three and Oakland nothing. Mitchell just
- 1:52:38informed us, Bill, that that's Williams' second
- 1:52:41ejection of the season. So that's going to cost
- 1:52:43him more than 25. Uh -huh. Looks like that's
- 1:52:47kind of a year. Here he is, the hitting star
- 1:52:50for the Yankees, Gene Michael. Bounced a second
- 1:52:53his first time up, but in the fourth inning with
- 1:52:55two men on, he home it into the right field seat
- 1:52:57for all three runs. And Gene takes the pitch,
- 1:53:01low ball one. and the Yankees in front three
- 1:53:11-nothing. Wind up by Odom. Outside ball two.
- 1:53:19Odom, when he delivers, kind of falls towards
- 1:53:21first base. Here's the two -all pitch. Right
- 1:53:34down the middle, strike called. Two and one on
- 1:53:39deck, Mike Kekich. Two -one pitch high, ball
- 1:53:51three, three and one. Oakland out hitting the
- 1:53:57Yankees eight to six. But as we told you, the
- 1:53:59big home run by Michael accounting for all three
- 1:54:03runs. 3 -1 delivery, Gene taking all the way
- 1:54:11at slow ball four. Second walk, given up by Odom.
- 1:54:17And now Mike Hekkichup, and his job is to advance.
- 1:54:22Michael is second with a sacrifice putt. Epstein
- 1:54:25comes over now to talk with Blumo. You know,
- 1:54:30with Larry Brown in there, Phil, I wonder if
- 1:54:32they'll try the play they tried last night with
- 1:54:34the second baseman, Green, coming in. I got it.
- 1:54:39Brown is not nearly as quick as Dick Green. I
- 1:54:43imagine Epstein will come in and Brown will go
- 1:54:45over and cover first. You gotta be quick to do
- 1:54:49that. They're creeping in and Kekich bunched,
- 1:54:52bunched it hard. Epstein, they're gonna go to
- 1:54:54second and it's gonna be late and every... Oh,
- 1:54:56he called him out! Holy cow did he miss that
- 1:55:00play. Jim Odom. Michael had slid his foot, was
- 1:55:06on the... the inside part of the bag, and Campanaris
- 1:55:12had a reach for it. Gene had beaten the play,
- 1:55:14but Odom called him out. So it goes to the fourth
- 1:55:19play from three to six. Epstein got in there
- 1:55:23quickly, but did not make a good throw. And Gene
- 1:55:27Michael with a good jump and a burst of speed
- 1:55:29was in the second base. One away. Harris clots
- 1:55:33the batter. Harris has walked twice and flied
- 1:55:35to center. Kekes with the jacket on at first.
- 1:55:48Standing in front of, staying there. The stretch
- 1:55:53and the pitch outside ball one. Bill White, you
- 1:55:57know, watching Kekes there, I noticed when I
- 1:56:00was playing there was some big guys would stand
- 1:56:02in front of our first baseman on a play like
- 1:56:04this. Didn't that bother you a little bit? It
- 1:56:07does. Right, it does. You can't see well. All
- 1:56:12right, the 1 -0 delivery. Low ball 2, 2 -0. Virginia
- 1:56:24Citizens Day at Saturday at 2 p .m. when the
- 1:56:27Yankees play the Minnesota Twins. Our first one
- 1:56:32of the year. 2 -0 pitch outside, ball 3, 3 -0.
- 1:56:41One thing here, Phil, I'm sure Mike wanted to
- 1:56:44get the guy over. second but I'm also sure he
- 1:56:47didn't want to be out there on that base himself
- 1:56:49standing around in this cold weather. Right he
- 1:56:52wanted to get in that dugout where those heaters
- 1:56:54are. Stay warm. We know on our clock he'll be
- 1:57:00taken all the way. The pitch is right down the
- 1:57:03middle three balls and a strike. Herman Munson
- 1:57:08on deck. Ready for the 3 -1 pitch. It's right
- 1:57:20in there, strike two, three and two. Well, let's
- 1:57:27see if Mike will be off and running. Only one
- 1:57:30out. They're not paying too much attention to
- 1:57:35him there at first base. The stretch, he does
- 1:57:40not go and the ball is outside, ball four. Walked
- 1:57:45two men in this inning. His third since he came
- 1:57:48in the ball game in the fifth. Beckett's walking
- 1:57:52slowly to second. Clark is at first. Thurman
- 1:57:54-Munson who is two for three. Single to left
- 1:57:57in the first. Single to center in the third and
- 1:57:59struck out in the fourth. On deck, Bobby Merson.
- 1:58:06Yankees leading three nothing. Bottom of the
- 1:58:08sixth. One out. Breaking pitch, ball one. Only
- 1:58:39one out. Mackey's trying to add to their three.
- 1:58:46Hold them to the belt. Ball two, little bit inside.
- 1:58:54Epstein's going to come over, and Bando started
- 1:58:56in from third, but Epstein got there first. Little
- 1:59:03action in the Oakland bullpen. Two balls, no
- 1:59:18strikes on Munson. His pitch is ball three. Three
- 1:59:38balls, no strikes. So, Blue Moon Odom in a jam
- 1:59:50here. Walk through this inning already, and there's
- 1:59:55the strike on the inside part of the plate. Three
- 1:59:57and one. On the scoreboard, the Yanks wish the
- 2:00:02Knicks the best of luck at Los Angeles tonight.
- 2:00:06The first game of that important playoff series
- 2:00:09between the Knicks and the Lakers. The don't
- 2:00:14turn on your TVs doesn't start till after ten.
- 2:00:20The stretch and the pitch pop foul back and out
- 2:00:23of play. Green two. Matter of fact, If they might
- 2:00:29delay the start of that game, I heard on the
- 2:00:32radio because President Nixon is going to dress
- 2:00:34the country tonight at 10 o 'clock. If they delay
- 2:00:41it too long, they'll be starting the season again.
- 2:00:44Looks like they start basketball in June, though.
- 2:00:50And hockey. Gotta wish the Rangers luck, too.
- 2:00:56They'll be meeting the Boston Bruins. Second
- 2:01:04base orb was a good throw there to have Kekich.
- 2:01:07They had the pickle play on. Larry Brown came
- 2:01:10over, but Blue Moon Odom threw it high, and Kekich
- 2:01:14was able to dive back in. A lot of times that's
- 2:01:18a count play. The pitcher will watch the catcher,
- 2:01:21and when the catcher, or in this case, Dave Duncan,
- 2:01:25sees Brown, the second baseman, positioned, he'll
- 2:01:29maybe give the pitcher a quick fist to the old
- 2:01:31wheel and throw there. Right on the nose. As
- 2:01:44Munson gobs a low fastball. That Rudy really
- 2:01:49bouncing around in left field. Two outs. Bobby
- 2:01:51Mertz to the batter. Bobby is flying to left,
- 2:01:53single right and struck out. These guys have
- 2:01:59more conferences than anybody. There's Bando
- 2:02:01out there again with his catcher Duncan. They
- 2:02:04do a lot of talking. I guess that's what you
- 2:02:06need though with a veteran ball club. Soft aim's
- 2:02:09over. Well, it looks like they've been stalling
- 2:02:12to get somebody loose out in the bullpen, Bill.
- 2:02:14That's Bill Posedale, who evidently has taken
- 2:02:17over for Dick Williams. Williams was kicked out
- 2:02:20for arguing a ball strike count with Ron Luciano.
- 2:02:26So Bill Posedale out there now talking to his
- 2:02:29pitcher, Lou Monodam, and they're gonna, looks
- 2:02:32like they're gonna bring a left -hander in to
- 2:02:34pitch to Bobby Mercer. Dick Hauser. goes out
- 2:02:41and says something to Mike Tankett. She tells
- 2:02:42him to be careful down there. Mike almost got
- 2:02:45picked off. While we're waiting on the new pitcher,
- 2:02:48let's go over the scores again for you. Minnesota
- 2:02:50beat Boston 3 -1. The winning pitcher was Dick
- 2:02:54Woodson, the loser Ray Cope. No score. Baltimore,
- 2:02:58Kansas City at the end of three innings of play.
- 2:03:01McNally against Al Kenton. Baltimore's lost three
- 2:03:04games in a row. Chicago White Sox. Dick Allen's
- 2:03:10third home run of the year in a 10th of one on
- 2:03:12edge to Cleveland 7 -2. That's the Chicago 7th
- 2:03:19straight win. Texas is playing host to Detroit.
- 2:03:22There's no score there at the end of two and
- 2:03:24a half innings of play. California beat Milwaukee
- 2:03:273 -1. The winner, Clark. The loser, Parsons.
- 2:03:33In the National League, San Francisco beat Philadelphia
- 2:03:368 -6. I think at the end of five, St. Louis leads
- 2:03:45Atlanta now eight to three at the end of three
- 2:03:49and a half innings of play. Henry Aaron got his
- 2:03:51643rd home run of his career in that ball game.
- 2:03:58Houston leads Chicago, the Cubs three to two.
- 2:04:01The Cubs have lost seven straight and the Astros
- 2:04:03surprisingly have won eight straight. Montreal
- 2:04:06and Los Angeles, that game tonight and we have
- 2:04:09no score on that yet. I'll tell you about the
- 2:04:18many ways to buy tickets to Yankee games. There
- 2:04:21are more than 200 ticket outlets in Yankee land.
- 2:04:23First there is the Yankee Stadium's advanced
- 2:04:26ticket office. That's open every day of the season
- 2:04:28from 9 in the morning until 5 p .m. and until
- 2:04:31at least a half hour after the close of the game
- 2:04:33at Yankee Stadium. You can also order any time
- 2:04:37by mail simply send your ticket request, check,
- 2:04:39or money order together with your name and address
- 2:04:41to the ticket manor. New York Yankee, Yankee
- 2:04:43Stadium, Bronx, New York. Okay, Bill and Jim
- 2:04:56Rowland, a big left -hander comes on to do the
- 2:04:58pitching. This is his second appearance of the
- 2:05:00year, has no one or loss reckoned. Pitching to
- 2:05:03Bobby Mercer with runners at first and second,
- 2:05:05two out in the Yankees leading 3 -0. Almost a
- 2:05:08wild pitch. A good play by Dave Duncan as Rowland
- 2:05:12came side on. Ball one to Mercer. Rollin' at
- 2:05:216 -2, 200 pounds. Kekich at second, Clark at
- 2:05:30first, two up. Through the belt. Pitch low, ball
- 2:05:38two, he almost stumbled that time. Fixing the
- 2:05:42mound out there. On deck, Felipe Alou. Nope,
- 2:05:50check that, Roy White. Felipe bats after White.
- 2:05:592 -0 on Bobby. Switched by Rowland is low, ball
- 2:06:05three. And Rowland wanted that one. 3 -0 to count.
- 2:06:18That's the score of the game, too, 3 -0. Yankees'
- 2:06:21favor. Stretch by Rowland. 3 -0 pitch. Strike
- 2:06:32one call, 3 -1. Look at him. He's got hands up.
- 2:06:45He's got two strikes and a ball. He's got to
- 2:06:47adjust the opposite. But it's three and one here.
- 2:06:52All right. Ready for the 3 -1 pitch. Bobby will
- 2:06:54be ready for that fastball. He hits it deep to
- 2:06:58right field. That ball's going to be in for a
- 2:07:00base hit. Bounces in the seats for a ground roll
- 2:07:03double. And Tekich scores. Block has to stop
- 2:07:06and go back to third. And Bobby Mercer in with
- 2:07:09a stand -up double. The Yankees are out in front
- 2:07:12four to nothing. You know, that's got to be a
- 2:07:17great feeling, Bill. A new pitcher coming in.
- 2:07:21He's behind three and one. And the almost 99
- 2:07:25percent sure he's going to come in with a fastball.
- 2:07:27You're going to get that fastball. And Bobby
- 2:07:29hung with it and lined it down the right field
- 2:07:31line. And actually, the ball hadn't bounced in
- 2:07:33the seat. Bobby might have gotten another RBI
- 2:07:35because Clark was hustling around second. Yes,
- 2:07:38he was. By two men around, Roy White the batter.
- 2:07:42Roy has bounced to first twice and flying to
- 2:07:44left. Mercer at second, Clark at third. Rowland
- 2:07:51will take the full windup. Mr. White fouled back
- 2:07:55and out of play. That run, by the way, will be
- 2:08:04charged to Blue Moon Odom. Mike Kekich scoring.
- 2:08:17One strike pitch just outside 101. Clark also
- 2:08:23is the responsibility of Odom. Harris has had
- 2:08:30three walks in this ballgame. Number last year,
- 2:08:35Harris got a lot of walks. As a matter of fact,
- 2:08:36got more walks than he's gotten in any other
- 2:08:38year in the big leagues. Curve looped in a shallow
- 2:08:42right field. Nobody's going to get this, but
- 2:08:44it'll go into the seat. Epstein chases it, but
- 2:08:47it goes way back into the seat. One ball, two
- 2:08:50strikes. Harris now has five bases on balls for
- 2:08:58the year. Mark had 64 last year and ours is noted
- 2:09:10as a man was tough to walk cause he would swing
- 2:09:12at just about anything but he's really got that
- 2:09:16eagle eye now. The pitch high and outside the
- 2:09:26count is even a two and two. Two balls, two strikes,
- 2:09:29two out, two men on. And at halftime, the New
- 2:09:34York Nets 63, the Virginia Squires 52. Go Nets
- 2:09:38on the scoreboard. The 2 -2 pitch. Foul over
- 2:09:44our heads. How about that? A young boy got that
- 2:09:57one. Showed me a lot of courage there because
- 2:09:59it's cold tonight and that was a solid foul ball
- 2:10:02line drive. Two and two. Rolling winds. Pitch
- 2:10:12low and inside, full count, three and two. Three
- 2:10:27balls, two strikes. Yankees in front, four -nothing.
- 2:10:30And the bottom of the sixth. The background and
- 2:10:37the back goes out to the mound. So does the ball
- 2:10:39and Roland throws the ball at first base and
- 2:10:42they got him. But the Yankees pick up a run on
- 2:10:46just one base hit. No errors and two men left.
- 2:10:51And now at the end of six full innings is the
- 2:10:53Yankees four and Oakland nothing. We're getting
- 2:10:59ready to go at the top of the seventh before
- 2:11:01we go to the top of the seventh though. Here
- 2:11:03is Bill White with a very important announcement.
- 2:11:07Bill, let's pause now. This is the New York Yankee
- 2:11:10baseball network. Let's pause for station identification.
- 2:11:14This is your guy, High Agents. Join me for your
- 2:11:16kind of music, weekdays, 3 to 7, here on the
- 2:11:20fresh air sound of Radio 81, WGY Schenectady.
- 2:11:31As we go into the top of the 7 with the Yankees
- 2:11:34ahead 4 -0, We have a pinch hitter, Frank Mutter.
- 2:11:39Yes, Brett Algate. Well, that for the pitcher,
- 2:11:44Jim Rowland. And the A's, as Ewen Phil mentioned
- 2:11:48earlier, have been very successful in this series
- 2:11:51with their pinch hitters. A little while ago,
- 2:11:53George Hendrick had an infield hit as a pinch
- 2:11:55hitter. The Oakland pinch hitters are three for
- 2:11:59three in this series, Bill. All right, techage
- 2:12:01is ready. D was the first pitch. A curve ball
- 2:12:03that's too low. Two years with the Minnesota
- 2:12:12Twins. Picked up over the window by open. Down
- 2:12:16low ball. Two balls and no strikes. Aldi, a big
- 2:12:22right -handed hitter. He's 6 '3", weighs 215.
- 2:12:26Attended Hofstra College. Looks down on his third
- 2:12:29base coach, Irv Norn. Tag that just ready now.
- 2:12:32The 2 -0 pitch. Ball three inside. It'll be Aldi,
- 2:12:40then Burt Campanier. and then Joe Rudy as we're
- 2:12:45in the top of the seventh. Gackage has given
- 2:12:48up eight hits. Pitch is too low, ball four. Walked
- 2:12:52him on four pitches. So in this series, the Oakland
- 2:13:00Pitch Hitters have all gotten on base. Three
- 2:13:02hits now, walk to Brant Algea. Algea not addressing.
- 2:13:08The Yankees lead 4 -0. The hitter is Burt Campanero.
- 2:13:11Campi's been up three times. He's won for three.
- 2:13:14Bounce to the pitcher. Bounce to the first base.
- 2:13:16And got an infield single off the glove for Rich
- 2:13:18Bacchetti. Gekkage stretches. Comes to the plate
- 2:13:21too high. A ball. At activity in the Yankee bullpen,
- 2:13:27Bill, Fred Bean, right -hander, and Rich Hinton,
- 2:13:30a left -hander, both warming up. Kekich had trouble
- 2:13:34with Milwaukee in the later innings, but John
- 2:13:36Briggs got him for a home run. So Ralph Hough
- 2:13:39is going to try to not let Mike go too far. The
- 2:13:421 -0 pitch. There's a strike on the outside corner.
- 2:13:45Ball and a strike. The Aggie infield, Alou is
- 2:13:49holding Alier there at first. Horace Clark at
- 2:13:53second base. Gene Michael at short. They're looking
- 2:13:55for two. Rich McKinney's enclosed at third, looking
- 2:13:58for the punch. Kekich comes to the bell. He doesn't
- 2:14:02have a big lead. Pitch. Line drive, base it up
- 2:14:05the middle. That had to take it ducking. Alney
- 2:14:10will hold it second base as Mercer comes up with
- 2:14:12a base ball and that brings Ralph Houk out of
- 2:14:15the deck out. Campanier's hit a 1 -1 pitch and
- 2:14:22lined a single up the middle for his second base
- 2:14:24hit. Bran Alye stopped his second. Now Ralph
- 2:14:30Houk out talking to Thurman Munson and Mike Kekich.
- 2:14:35And there's some action out in right field. Ralph's
- 2:14:37going to leave. He's going to let Kekich stay
- 2:14:39in there. Joe Rudy's a hitter. Yankees ahead
- 2:14:444 -0. Rudy's been up three times. He's singled
- 2:14:51to left field his first trip up, popped to the
- 2:14:53first base, and a Lou and he's flied to center
- 2:14:55field. So he's 1 for 3. One thing about this
- 2:14:59ball Kekich has had good support behind him.
- 2:15:02Great play by Gene Michael. And a good catch
- 2:15:04in deep center by Bobby Mercer on Rudy back in
- 2:15:08the fifth inning. Saved some damage. A double
- 2:15:11play in the sixth inning got him out of potential
- 2:15:13trouble. All right, Rudy Batts right -handed.
- 2:15:18Go out. Kekich will stretch. Text out yet second.
- 2:15:25takes a long look at him comes to the plate a
- 2:15:27curve ball gets the outside corner called strike
- 2:15:30but Kenny backs up just a bit at third base the
- 2:15:32outfield plays Rudy straight away Roy White fairly
- 2:15:37deep in left field Oakland now with nine hits
- 2:15:43but as Frank Messer mentioned the Yankees have
- 2:15:45come up with some fine fielding plays here's
- 2:15:49your one pitch to Rudy change up cut on had him
- 2:15:54fooled with a high change. Rudy with an extremely
- 2:15:59closed hand missed a high change up and the count
- 2:16:06runs down no balls in two strikes. Now Kekich
- 2:16:29is ready. Here's the 0 -2 pitch. Best ball lined
- 2:16:35to center field. Mercer's back now. He's probably
- 2:16:37started in. He one -hands the ball. Allier tags
- 2:16:41the second. He'll go to third. Campanaris was
- 2:16:44late getting back to first, so he'll have to
- 2:16:46stay there. Rudy hits the ball hard. Mercer backed
- 2:16:50up one -handed it. Alertly threw the ball to
- 2:16:53second. The whole of Campanaris at first base.
- 2:16:56As Allier tag... Second and second and one on
- 2:16:58the third. One out now. Runners at first and
- 2:17:01third and the hitter is a powerful Reggie Jackson.
- 2:17:08Jackson struck out. Popped up to Clark. Hoss
- 2:17:11made a fine running catch. About 25 yards out
- 2:17:15in right field there. Right in front of Johnny
- 2:17:18Callison. And Jackson's walked. So Reggie is
- 2:17:240 for 2. That's left handed. Has a quick bat.
- 2:17:29And Callison plays in deep and right field. Alou
- 2:17:32is holding Campanier's on it first. Allier leaves
- 2:17:36from third. Pitch. It's the outside corner, it's
- 2:17:39right. Kekich gets ahead of Jackson. They play
- 2:17:52Reggie to full. Bursar deep and right center
- 2:17:55field. White and left center and deep. The 0
- 2:18:01-1 pitch. Swung on, bounced foul outside first
- 2:18:04base line. So it's no balls and two strikes.
- 2:18:11Alier goes back to third base. Campanier is first
- 2:18:14to first. Campy talking to his first base coach.
- 2:18:18Gerrier there. Now Kek is looking in at Munson.
- 2:18:31Mike takes a peek at Aliyah leading him third,
- 2:18:33comes to the belt, looks at the popular as a
- 2:18:35third. Sidearm curveball, come on! And this struck
- 2:18:39him out on three pitches. So Kake picks up strikeout
- 2:18:44number, let's see, three. He's gotten Jackson
- 2:18:49now twice. And that was a big one. So two outs
- 2:18:53and Sal Bando's in. Bando's one for three. He's
- 2:18:58single to center his first drip, bounce. short
- 2:19:00and also bounced into a four shot. Sal Fando,
- 2:19:04that's right -handed. He's a tough out, especially
- 2:19:06with men on base. And he has Alye down at third
- 2:19:10camp and errors at first. Yankee still ahead
- 2:19:124 -0, top of the seven. Kekich deals a change
- 2:19:16up to two low. Fando backing out on that change.
- 2:19:21Sal Fando looking for a ball inside on deck.
- 2:19:23Bobby Brooks. Outfield straight is up for Bando.
- 2:19:29They play him straight away. Clark shades him
- 2:19:32towards second just a bit. Back on the grass
- 2:19:35there. 1 -0 pitch. Curve ball's inside. Two balls
- 2:19:44and no strikes. Keckage is struggling just a
- 2:19:49bit. They count 2 -1 -0 on Bando with runners
- 2:19:54at first and third for the Oakland Daves. Now
- 2:20:00Mike's ready. And there goes Campanier. Keckage
- 2:20:04steps off, goes to first phase. Campy gets back
- 2:20:07there. Keckage was in his stretch. Campanier
- 2:20:13started toward second. Mike alertly stepped off
- 2:20:16the bag, off of the mound. And took a couple
- 2:20:22of steps toward Campanier. Campanier stopped,
- 2:20:25went back and beat the throw there. Kekich was
- 2:20:28watching that runner over there at third base,
- 2:20:30too, to be sure he wasn't going to try to break
- 2:20:32Alguez. Oh, Campanera's still there at first
- 2:20:38base. Alguez at third. Two outs, two balls, no
- 2:20:44strikes on Bando. Here's the pitch. Two high
- 2:20:48ball, three. Three and 0. Evidently, that worried
- 2:20:51Mike just a bit. I don't know where Campy was
- 2:20:55going. They're behind 4 -0. But he almost got
- 2:21:00it off, he almost pulled it off. Mike comes to
- 2:21:08the bell. Here's a 3 -0 pitch to Bando. That's
- 2:21:12a strike right down the heart of the plate. 3
- 2:21:15-1. Bando takes a look down at his third base
- 2:21:20coach, Irv North. And Kekich now is ready. Here's
- 2:21:28a 3 -1 pitch. High ball, four. Base is loaded
- 2:21:32now as Bando jogs down the first base. Campanier
- 2:21:36goes into second. Alier down at third. Two outs
- 2:21:41and the hitter is Bobby Brooks, the center fielder.
- 2:21:45Brooks is one for two. He's flying to center
- 2:21:47field, he's walked, and he's single to left.
- 2:21:50This little fella's about 5 '8". That's right
- 2:21:55-handed. Ralph Howe looking down, looking out
- 2:22:03over the field. He's been off the seed package
- 2:22:07once, isn't he? Mike Nowell winds up. Time's
- 2:22:12called, he wants him rosin'. Townsend runners
- 2:22:17on base, they're three out there. Bad nose at
- 2:22:21first. Camp and there's the second. Here's the
- 2:22:26fish to brook. Curve ball, one hopper to Michael,
- 2:22:28fantastic base hit. One run scores. Around third
- 2:22:32base is Campanaris. He'll score easily. Bando
- 2:22:35holds it second. And the Yankee lead has been
- 2:22:39cut in half. Brooks with a single pass. Gene
- 2:22:44Michael just to his left towards second base.
- 2:22:46Just out of his reach. So Brooks drives in two
- 2:22:52runs. He gets Allier in from third. Campanaris
- 2:22:55in from second. Bando stops it second. And Oakland
- 2:23:00picks up two runs now. They have 10 hits. The
- 2:23:03Yankees have four runs on seven hits. Ralph Auk
- 2:23:12out there again. This time, that's going to be
- 2:23:15all for Mike Kekich. OK, Bill, you can keep an
- 2:23:19eye on the bullpen. So he was coming in here,
- 2:23:20and with Dave docking up there, I would imagine
- 2:23:24Fred Bean. And Bobby Brooks with one swing of
- 2:23:27the bat gets as many runs batted in as he had
- 2:23:30all season. Say, you know, every day or so we

- 2:25:35and Company, Main Street and Hartford, Connecticut
- 2:25:38also has Yankee tickets. slender right -hander
- 2:25:47Fred Bean, who generates a lot of power from
- 2:25:49a small frame, comes on the pitch for the New
- 2:25:52York Yankees and back to Bill White. All right
- 2:25:55Franklin, Bean's in his second appearance for
- 2:25:58the Yankees and he'll have to face Dave Duncan.
- 2:26:02Bando is at second, Brooks at first, Yankees
- 2:26:05ahead 4 -2, two outs here with the top of the
- 2:26:07seventh. Bean stretches, comes to the play, a
- 2:26:13curve ball misses outside. Duncan's been up three
- 2:26:16times. He's fly to left field, single to left,
- 2:26:20and he's bounced into a double play. Dave has
- 2:26:28power. He has two home runs this year. Badendo
- 2:26:34takes a big lead down a second. He'll be checked
- 2:26:36by Bean, takes a long look at him, delivers a
- 2:26:40slider, gets the plate, one and one. Yankees
- 2:26:49play Duncan straight away. White in left, Mercer
- 2:26:53in center. Johnny Taliesin out in right field.
- 2:26:56Now the stretch. The runners lead. 1 -1 pitch.
- 2:27:00Hurt ball fouled off. That hit Duncan on the
- 2:27:04toe. Went out in fair territory, Munson bounced
- 2:27:06on it, but the home plate umpire Ron Luciano
- 2:27:09immediately stopped the play, so they count the
- 2:27:12ball and two strikes on Duncan. Now McKinney
- 2:27:15moves back at third just a bit. Sal Bando down
- 2:27:21at second. Bobby Brooks at first. They count
- 2:27:26one ball and two strikes on Dave Duncan. Duncan
- 2:27:33cocks that fat over his right shoulder. As Dean
- 2:27:37looks at it much. Now the little right -hander's
- 2:27:39ready. One -two pitch. Curve ball hit up in there
- 2:27:42left field. White digging in for it. Now he has
- 2:27:45the range, waits on it, and has it for the third
- 2:27:47out. So Fred Dean comes in and pitches to Dave
- 2:27:52Duncan, and he gets him on a lazy, lofty fly
- 2:27:56ball to left field. But Oakland picked up two
- 2:28:01runs on one two -hit. There were no Yankees errors,
- 2:28:07and two A's left on base. At the end, now of
- 2:28:11six and a half innings of play, the New York
- 2:28:13Yankees four, the Oakland A's two. Tomorrow,
- 2:28:20the Yankees are looking for a good day to go
- 2:28:22up to West Point and play the cadets up at the
- 2:28:27U .S. Military Academy. And then for the weekend,
- 2:28:31they'll be right back here at Yankee Stadium
- 2:28:33to meet the Minnesota Twins Friday night at 7
- 2:28:36.30, Saturday afternoon at 2 o 'clock, and the
- 2:28:39big cap day doubleheader Sunday starting at 1.
- 2:28:43Chance for you to come out and... Here's the
- 2:28:44Harman Killebrew Rod Carew, Cezar Tovar, and
- 2:28:48the rookie home run sensation Bobby Darwin. Now,
- 2:28:51Darwin is a rookie, true, but I think he's like
- 2:28:55a 29 -year -old rookie. He was around, what was
- 2:28:58it, Bill White, the Dodger organization as a
- 2:29:01pitcher for several years? I believe so, right?
- 2:29:03Right. And now he's converted to the outfield.
- 2:29:09And, well, he had a sensational spring. with
- 2:29:13the twins down in Florida. I'm looking forward
- 2:29:15to seeing them. We hope you'll be out here. That's
- 2:29:17this weekend, the Yankees and the twins. All
- 2:29:22right, Franklin, it'll be a Lou Callison McKinney
- 2:29:24in the last of the sevens as the Yankees carry
- 2:29:27a 4 -2 lead here. The new pitcher for the A's
- 2:29:34is Joe Horland, and he misses inside. Joe picked
- 2:29:38up by the Oakland A's from the Chicago White
- 2:29:41Sox. Orland was released there just before the
- 2:29:47baseball strike. 1 -0 pitch to Alou. Popped up
- 2:29:50in foul territory. The catcher, Dave Duncan,
- 2:29:53is back. He throws his mask down and grabs the
- 2:29:56ball for the first time. So Alou fouls out to
- 2:29:59the catcher, Duncan. Orland was released by the
- 2:30:02White Sox. There's a little bit of controversy
- 2:30:04over it. But I was trying to show before the
- 2:30:08ball game tonight. And he feels this could be
- 2:30:12quite a break for him to be released by Chicago
- 2:30:14and picked up by the Oakland A's, coming to a
- 2:30:17club that, well, is figured to be more of a contest
- 2:30:20really than Chicago. Now he pitches to Johnny
- 2:30:24Callison. Down low ball. Callison's been up three
- 2:30:27times. He's two for three. Fly deep to center
- 2:30:31field. He doubled down the left field line and
- 2:30:33he singled the left field. So John's been going
- 2:30:36to the opposite field. Portland's ready. One
- 2:30:38old pitch to Callison. curve ball looped to left
- 2:30:40field, that's going to curve foul. Bando's after
- 2:30:43Thomas Campanero is going to get back in the
- 2:30:45seats. So the count's one and one on Callison.
- 2:30:52Coleman, of course, excited about being with
- 2:30:54another ball club, especially when he was out
- 2:30:56of work there for that brief time. But he said
- 2:30:59you can't count the White Sox out. He said they're
- 2:31:01going to have a good ball club this year and
- 2:31:02they could make their presence very much felt.
- 2:31:05Well, they already made their presence felt.
- 2:31:08Dick Allen? Wilbur would 1 -1 pitch to Callison,
- 2:31:13misses outside a breaking ball. They have, Chuck
- 2:31:16Tanner has done a great job of molding that ball
- 2:31:19club, that young club. They've got Carlos May.
- 2:31:23I think they'll be in here in June sometime.
- 2:31:26Be able to see Dick Allen on June 13th. 2 -1
- 2:31:31pitch to Callison, bounce right back to Horan.
- 2:31:34Fitcher has it. He'll go to first base near two
- 2:31:36outs here in the seventh. What about the White
- 2:31:41Sox? Well, they've won seven in a row with that
- 2:31:4310th inning win today on Dick Allen's home run.
- 2:31:47They are moving right along. Go along with that
- 2:31:51big Bill Melton, the third baseman. Carlos May,
- 2:31:55who's a good hitter. They're going to be trouble.
- 2:31:59Unless you've got a guy like Wilbur Wood who
- 2:32:01you know is going to go out there and pitch at
- 2:32:02least twice a week, sometimes three. And win.
- 2:32:07Here's McKinney. He pops the first pitch up and
- 2:32:09foul territory, no it's in fair territory. The
- 2:32:12first baseman Epstein right on the line and it's
- 2:32:16called a fair ball and he has it for the third
- 2:32:20up. So McKinney pops to the first baseman Mike
- 2:32:23Epstein. The Yankees miss seven, three up and
- 2:32:26three down. Now at the end of seven full innings
- 2:32:28of play, the Yankees four, the Oakland A's two.
- 2:32:35Ralph Halt makes some changes now as Rusty Torres
- 2:32:39comes on to play right field and Hal Lanier will
- 2:32:43come on to play third base with Rich McKinney
- 2:32:45and Johnny Callison out of the ball game. Fred
- 2:32:48Bean on the mound. He came on in relief in the
- 2:32:51last inning when Kekich gave up a couple of walks,
- 2:32:54a couple of base hits and a couple of runs and
- 2:32:56he got Dave Duncan on the fly ball to shuttle
- 2:32:59left. So we'll see what transpires here in the
- 2:33:02last two innings as the Yankees try to hold on
- 2:33:05to and perhaps improve a four to two lead, Bill.
- 2:33:08All right, Frank. Think Mike Epstein's a hitter.
- 2:33:10Mike's two for three. He's hit the ball hard.
- 2:33:13Payne gets a curve ball too low. Epstein singles
- 2:33:16the left -center field back in the second. He
- 2:33:19hit a long fly to right -center field where Mercer
- 2:33:23Dobin got it in the fourth, and he's single the
- 2:33:25right field in the sixth. 1 -0 pitch to Big Mike
- 2:33:28outside and high ball to two balls and no strikes
- 2:33:33They play Epstein to pull Taurus deep in right
- 2:33:38field Bobby Mercer in right center Roy white
- 2:33:41deep and left center for spark now move back
- 2:33:43on the grass at second base 2 -0 pitch outside
- 2:33:46ball free Beans missed three straight times here
- 2:33:51on deck is Mike Egan Sky broke up the ball game
- 2:33:56last night with a double. Back in the 12. 3 -0
- 2:34:00pitch to Epstein. And there's a strike on the
- 2:34:03outside corner. 3 -1. Epstein looks at his third
- 2:34:12base coach, Herb Norton. Times call. Now we're
- 2:34:18ready. Here's a 3 -1 pitch from B. That ball
- 2:34:22is too high. Epstein throws his bat away and
- 2:34:27jogs on down to first base. And Mike Hegan will
- 2:34:33hit for Larry Brown. Oh, he's being called back
- 2:34:36now. Kurt Bleffrey's also swinging a bat. Luciano
- 2:34:40is asking Herb Norton if that's the finish that
- 2:34:43he wants, and it'll be Mike Hegan. Last night
- 2:34:58won the ball game for the A's. You know, Yankee
- 2:35:03bullpen coach Jim Higgins was asked by a couple
- 2:35:06of the reporters how he thought about it. He
- 2:35:08said, well, I'll tell you, last year, he said
- 2:35:09we had the perfect situation. He said, Mike came
- 2:35:12up in a similar situation, got a base hit, but
- 2:35:15Bobby Mercer threw the runner out of the play.
- 2:35:18First pitch to Higgins, a breaking ball too low.
- 2:35:23One ball and no strikes. Higgins bats left -handed.
- 2:35:28He's pinch -hitting for Larry Brown. Yankee pitchers
- 2:35:34haven't gotten the open, uh, pinch -hitters out
- 2:35:37so far this season. Epstein leaves. Louis Blank
- 2:35:39behind. That breaking ball gets a play. One and
- 2:35:42one. On deck is Kurt Flepper with calling flank,
- 2:35:50but he doesn't like to be called flank. Bean
- 2:35:55looking at it much. He comes set. Check step
- 2:35:59stitch. Curve ball cut on and missed one and
- 2:36:02two. The Yankees have a Lewitt first, Clarket
- 2:36:13second, Gene Michael a couple steps from second
- 2:36:17base there shortstop and the third baseman now
- 2:36:19is Hal Lanier as Bean is ready. One two pitch.
- 2:36:24Misses outside. Counts even two balls and two
- 2:36:26strikes. The Yankees lead this ball game four
- 2:36:28to two. We're in the top of the eighth. The A's
- 2:36:36have ten hits. The Yankees seven. Now the strike.
- 2:36:41Here's a two -two pitch. Swung on, bounced foul.
- 2:36:44That'll be in the Yankee dugout. Counts even
- 2:36:47two balls and two strikes. now on the backside
- 2:36:55of the mound. Rubs the ball up. The fella doesn't
- 2:36:59use much rosin. Of course, as cold as it is,
- 2:37:03rosin won't do you any good out there. Hagan
- 2:37:11chokes up just a bit on the bat. Here's the 2
- 2:37:15-2 pitch. Misses outside. Full count now to Hagan.
- 2:37:21Epstein at first base. He's looking around for
- 2:37:23a sign. He will even move now with the Yankees
- 2:37:28ahead 4 -2. Now we're ready. Epstein leads. He's
- 2:37:35not running. Curve ball is fouled up. Breaking
- 2:37:40ball with 3 -2 -15. He has quite a bit of confidence
- 2:37:42in his ability to get the ball and the ball all
- 2:37:44over the plate. Chalice in the field, Mercer's
- 2:38:06after it, really digs in, Bobby loses his hat,
- 2:38:08but he has the reins now and has it for the first
- 2:38:11time. first pitch last night I asked him after
- 2:38:44the game I ran into him and said why don't you
- 2:38:47start swinging at the first pitch and he said
- 2:38:49when I was come up as a pinch hitter with my
- 2:38:51hands cold. Kurt batting left -handed Epstein
- 2:38:56leads pitch is too low a ball. Alou is not holding
- 2:39:02Epstein at first base the Yankees enjoy a two
- 2:39:05run lead and they're winning four to two there's
- 2:39:08one out and they play They play Bluffery to pull.
- 2:39:16Too low, he started at a breaking ball, held
- 2:39:18up. Two balls in those strikes. Bluffery has
- 2:39:24always had a fantastic eye for the strike zone.
- 2:39:26He very seldom swings at a bad pitch. In fact,
- 2:39:29when he first came up, they tried to get him
- 2:39:31to do this. They said he was taking pitches for
- 2:39:33balls that he could get out of the ballpark for.
- 2:39:36So then they were prompting him to be quite a
- 2:39:37slugger. Here's a 2 -0 pitch to him. That breaking
- 2:39:40ball just misses the outside. corner, three balls
- 2:39:43and no strikes. Blepharie backs out, looks down
- 2:39:45at Irv Noren, Noren looks in, he's getting the
- 2:39:48sign from somebody. Dick Williams has been kicked
- 2:39:51out of the ball game, but you can be sure he
- 2:39:53is not too far from that Oakland dugout. Now
- 2:40:00the 3 -0 pitch to Blepharie. There's a strike,
- 2:40:04drilled right in there. We've heard you and Phil
- 2:40:07mention earlier, Bill, that Dick Williams...
- 2:40:10would contemplate a trade for either dunking
- 2:40:13or tennis. Now this fellow Bluffery can rely
- 2:40:15on that luxury. Bluffery can go in there and
- 2:40:17catch for him. Right. Right. Epstein leads from
- 2:40:20first. The pitch. Curve ball. Cut all on it,
- 2:40:23Miss. Three and two. Hey, one thing. That bean
- 2:40:26isn't afraid to throw the breaking ball when
- 2:40:28he's behind. Throw it three -two to Heaton. Just
- 2:40:33throw it behind three -to -one and Bluffery got
- 2:40:35it over. Now the stretch. Here's a payoff pitch.
- 2:40:42Curve ball, swung on and missed. Struck him out.
- 2:40:44Big strikeout for Fred Bean. That's out number
- 2:40:47two. Bean throwing a breaking ball from behind.
- 2:40:56That's Fleffery on. Two straight curve balls.
- 2:40:58And that'll bring in Bert Campanaris. Campi's
- 2:41:02having a good night. He's two for four. Bounced
- 2:41:05out twice. Got an infield hit, and he singled
- 2:41:08and scored a run back in the seventh. Lanare
- 2:41:14third, moves in for him. He tries to putt, misses
- 2:41:17it. And it's a strike. Alou now holds Epstein
- 2:41:25on. Felipe feeling that he'll have to protect
- 2:41:27that first baseline for a putt anyway. Might
- 2:41:31as well hold Epstein there. Lanare in close to
- 2:41:34third. field straight away for Campaneros. Now
- 2:41:40Bean comes to the belt. Checks Epstein. U01 pitch.
- 2:41:43Curve ball, flung on and missed. No balls and
- 2:41:46two strikes. We're seeing a gutty performance
- 2:41:49here from little Fred Bean. Bean came on in the
- 2:41:53seventh and ticed Dave Duncan, hitting a little
- 2:41:55soft looper to wide left field. And after walking
- 2:42:00Epstein this inning, he's struck out a guy. The
- 2:42:11walking Epstein got Mike Egan to fly to Mercer
- 2:42:16and Center, struck out Kurt Bleffrey. Then he
- 2:42:21caught Kurt Campanaris looking at a third strike
- 2:42:23and he gets out of the inning. No runs, no hits,
- 2:42:25no error. There was one walk and one man left
- 2:42:28on base. At the end now of seven and a half innings
- 2:42:31of play, the Yankees four, the Oakland A's. second
- 2:42:40baseman at a new pitcher. The pitcher will be
- 2:42:42Darrell Knowles, and out at second base, a bit
- 2:42:44of a surprise to us up here will be Kurt Bluffery.
- 2:42:48Kurt Bluffery playing second. And Kurt Bluffery
- 2:42:58last year did play second base. He had played
- 2:43:02second base in the minor leagues, but very, very
- 2:43:04sparingly. I'd say maybe a game or two. It's
- 2:43:08not a completely foreign position, but it's an
- 2:43:10unfamiliar one to him, Bill White. Well, Dean
- 2:43:14Michael will be the Yankee hitter. It'll be Micah.
- 2:43:16Michael. And then B. And then Hall -Clark. Yankees
- 2:43:22ahead 4 -2. Noles gets down low a ball. Darrell
- 2:43:27Noles, a left -hander, is the fifth pitcher for
- 2:43:31Oakland. McLean started. Odom fits an inning
- 2:43:33and a third. Rowland fits a third of an inning.
- 2:43:35Joe Rowland fits one inning. Now Darrell Noles.
- 2:43:37This ball's hit out on the right field. It shouldn't
- 2:43:39be easy for Reggie Jackson. Fades to his right,
- 2:43:43waits on the ball, and gloves it for the first
- 2:43:45half. Dick Williams using his fifth pitcher tonight.
- 2:43:49He used four last night in picking up the four
- 2:43:53to three win. Of course, last night's game went
- 2:43:55to 12 innings. But this time here, you know,
- 2:44:00manager doesn't hesitate to go to that ball plant
- 2:44:02because he's got a lot of men that don't get
- 2:44:03much work in. Here's little Fred B. His first
- 2:44:09appearance late Noles is ready swung on and missed
- 2:44:15the first ball of fastball. Feeling shifts toward
- 2:44:20right field for Bean. Bean bats right -handed
- 2:44:22and they're in shallow. Noles over the head,
- 2:44:26dual one pitch. Misses outside, one and one.
- 2:44:28One out, nobody on. Yankees lead 4 -2 in the
- 2:44:31last half of the eighth inning. Yankees picked
- 2:44:36up three runs in the fourth. Gene Michael did
- 2:44:38his first home run of the year. A three run job.
- 2:44:42You give them a three nothing lead. They added
- 2:44:44one more in the sixth. This pitch is fouled off.
- 2:44:49One and two on beam. Oakland picked up their
- 2:44:55two runs in the seventh. Also got rid of Mike.
- 2:45:10All in two strikes. Bean came on and he's done
- 2:45:16a heck of a job. Nose doesn't like the sign.
- 2:45:24Now he's ready. One -two pitch. Hit up in the
- 2:45:27air down the right side. It'll be in foul territory
- 2:45:30and it'll be in the seat as Epstein and Jackson
- 2:45:34and also Bluffery all down there in the right
- 2:45:38field quarter. Ball went back two seats, two
- 2:45:43rows. The A's infield now has Epstein at first.
- 2:45:51Kurt Bleffrey, who pinched it last inning, stayed
- 2:45:54in the ball game. He's down at second. Now we're
- 2:45:59ready. One, two, pitch to B. Swung on and missed.
- 2:46:04Struck him out. He walked in the first, popped
- 2:46:26to the center fielder back in the third, walked
- 2:46:29in the fourth, walked again in the sixth. Clark
- 2:46:33has a good eye. Clark doesn't want to swing it
- 2:46:36better. His hand is with it. That gets you outside
- 2:46:41corner. That's right. Outfield straightens the
- 2:46:47way for Clark. Swung on, looped the right field,
- 2:46:54Jackson's there, comes in now, and one hand's
- 2:46:57the ball. Reggie got a slow start on that ball,
- 2:47:01but once he picked up speed, he picked it up
- 2:47:04full tilt. So that's it for the Yankees in the
- 2:47:07eighth. No runs, no hits, no errors, and nobody
- 2:47:10left. At the end now of eighth full inning to
- 2:47:12play, the New York Yankees, four. The Oakland
- 2:47:16A's, two. You remember, and the service you already
- 2:47:56expect with a Terry Morris name. As always, Morris
- 2:47:59gives you more. Prices like these. 1972 Mavericks,

- 2:48:14is back. See Ford's newest twin dealer, Morris
- 2:48:18Ford of Mercury, one mile north of the Burnt
- 2:48:20Hills traffic light on Route 50. and Milan Avenue
- 2:48:23in downtown Boston's far. Well, we're going out
- 2:48:31of the top half of the ninth inning, and some
- 2:48:33big men for Fred Dean to face, the heart of the
- 2:48:36batting order, Joe Rudy, Reggie Jackson, and
- 2:48:39Sal Bando. Minnesota for Boston, 3 -1. Baltimore
- 2:48:42and Kansas City still scoreless in the fifth
- 2:48:44inning. And Detroit scored five in the fifth
- 2:48:47for a 5 -1 lead over Texas. California over Milwaukee
- 2:48:513 to 1 and Chicago beat Cleveland 7 to 5. And
- 2:48:56in the National League, 8 to 6 San Francisco
- 2:48:58over Philadelphia, the Cincinnati Reds lead Pittsburgh
- 2:49:005 to 1 in the seventh. And it is St. Louis 9,
- 2:49:05Atlanta 4 at the end of five innings. All right,
- 2:49:09Frank, we're ready for Rudy. And Bean gets a
- 2:49:12breaking ball in for a call strike. Rudy's one
- 2:49:15for four. single to left field. He's popped to
- 2:49:19the first baseman and Clyde outflies to Mercer
- 2:49:21in center. Joe Batch right hand. Al Lanier is
- 2:49:26trying to take the bun away from him. He's in
- 2:49:28close to third. He bunched the third base. Lanier
- 2:49:30is in, gloves the ball, goes to first base and
- 2:49:33the ball was inside the line but Alou grabbed
- 2:49:36the ball and he and Rudy collided there and the
- 2:49:41runners out. He hit pretty hard. Rudy, the throw
- 2:49:46was in. Lanier was playing in close. He took
- 2:49:48the bunt away from Rudy. Rudy bunted anyway.
- 2:49:51Lanier made a fine pick up through inside the
- 2:49:54baseline. And Rudy ran smacking to Felipe Alou.
- 2:49:59In doing that, he tagged himself. So there's
- 2:50:02one out. And here's Reggie Jackson. That breaking
- 2:50:07ball gets the outside corner called strike. Yankees
- 2:50:12lead this ball game four to two and they're only
- 2:50:15two outs away. No wind. Jackson struck out twice,
- 2:50:21popped up and walked. Another curve ball cut
- 2:50:24on and missed. 0 -2. Bean with a good breaking
- 2:50:30ball, good motion. Ball is really dipping. They
- 2:50:33play Jackson. Now the 0 -2 pitch. Curve ball
- 2:50:39flung on and missed like three. So Bean, with
- 2:50:44his third strikeout here, has two outs in the
- 2:50:50ninth. And all he has to do now is get out of
- 2:50:53tough style. Bando. Bando is singled, bounced
- 2:50:58out, forced out, and he's walked. So he's won
- 2:51:00for three. Bando bats right -handed. He's working
- 2:51:03quickly. Get the fastball inside. Yankees lead
- 2:51:13four to two with two outs and nobody on top of
- 2:51:18the ninth. Curve ball misses outside. Two balls
- 2:51:24and no strikes. Bobby Brooks and Leon Dexter
- 2:51:34being looking at it much. Now he's ready. Wines,
- 2:51:38two -oh pitch, two high ball, three. Hudson slows
- 2:51:43him down now, all or something out there to him.
- 2:51:47Bean backs off on the back part of the mound,
- 2:51:49rubs the ball up. Here's a 3 -0 pitch. And it's
- 2:52:00a strike on the inside corner. 3 -1. Now this
- 2:52:04fella is showing some kind of guts here. He'll
- 2:52:07throw the breaking ball from behind. 3 -1 pitch.
- 2:52:11Strike two call. Bando taking all the way. Fred
- 2:52:16Bean now one pitch away from a save. See what
- 2:52:22happens. Bando's waiting. Now we're ready. Here's
- 2:52:24the 3 -0 -2 pitch. Curve ball given to left field.
- 2:52:28That should be easy for white. Roy's back about
- 2:52:31five steps. Waits on the ball and Cradles it
- 2:52:33in as well, but his ball game is over. Fred Bean
- 2:52:37being congratulated out there by Thurman Munson.
- 2:52:41For Oakland in the ninth inning, three men up
- 2:52:45and three men down. Frank Lesher will give you
- 2:52:49the wrap -up, but the final here, the New York
- 2:52:54Yankees four, the Oakland A's two. Shafer. Shafer
- 2:53:38pleasure stays first beer smooth, first beer
- 2:53:42bright, first frosty glass to last. You see,
- 2:53:46we started practicing on more than one beer thirsts
- 2:53:49back before most brewers even started brewing,
- 2:53:52and practice makes perfect. the Western Division
- 2:54:10defending champion Oakland A's in this two -game
- 2:54:12series at Yankees Stadium. Oakland winning last
- 2:54:14night 4 -3 in 12 innings. And the Yankees zipping
- 2:54:17right back tonight 4 -2 over Oakland in the regulation
- 2:54:218 .5 for a winning home team. Yankees four runs,
- 2:54:25seven hits and no errors. Oakland two runs, ten
- 2:54:27hits and no errors. The win goes to Mike Kackage,
- 2:54:32making him the Yankees' first two -game winner.
- 2:54:34His record is 2 -0. And Denny McClain, who started
- 2:54:38for you. the Oakland A's will be the loser. His
- 2:54:41record is 1 -1. And you credit Fred Bean with
- 2:54:45a save his first of the year. And this his second
- 2:54:48appearance for the Yankees. And the Yankees tonight
- 2:54:51showed offense, a home run by Gene Michael, accounting
- 2:54:56for three of the four runs. Bobby Mercer driving
- 2:55:00in the other run with a double that bounced into
- 2:55:02the seats in right field. And the Yankees came
- 2:55:06up with some good defense behind Keckage and
- 2:55:09behind Bean, especially behind Mike Keckage.
- 2:55:14And we look to Bobby Mercer in the fourth inning,
- 2:55:19who made a spectacular catch on Mike Epstein
- 2:55:23with runners at second and third. And two men
- 2:55:32out. Prior to that, Horace Clark had made a fine
- 2:55:35catch on Reggie Jackson. Horace going way back
- 2:55:39in the right field. And then Mercer's catch on
- 2:55:43Epstein in the fourth inning. Also, a fine defensive
- 2:55:50play by Gene Michael and the fifth on Larry Brown.
- 2:55:54Michael going deep to his right, came up with
- 2:55:57Brown's ground ball way back in the hole. Turned
- 2:56:00around and threw him out. And that was a big
- 2:56:03play because the Oakland A's then got two infield
- 2:56:06hits, a long fly ball to center field off the
- 2:56:09bat of Joel Rudy that was dropped. A double play
- 2:56:13back to Keg HF in the sixth inning after a leadoff
- 2:56:17single by Bobby Brooks. Duncan hit the ball down
- 2:56:20to third baseman Rich McKinney and he turned
- 2:56:24it into a third to second to first double play.
- 2:56:28That DP was a big one because that Epstein got
- 2:56:31a base hit to right, but he was forced by Larry
- 2:56:34Brown. The Oakland A's got their two runs in
- 2:56:38the seventh on a combination of a walk to Pinscher
- 2:56:42or Brent Alier. And then a single by Burt Campanaris.
- 2:56:49A walk to Sal Bando, a single by Bobby Brooks,
- 2:56:52which drove in the two runs. That single by Brooks
- 2:56:56brought... Fred Bean to the relief of Mike Kekich
- 2:57:00and Bean just sort of mowed him down with a combination
- 2:57:03of curveballs and fastballs. He used the curveball
- 2:57:06very effectively, gained three strikeouts en
- 2:57:10route to his first Yankee save. And as we said,
- 2:57:14the Yankee attack featured a three -run homer
- 2:57:16by Gene Michael in the fourth. Gene is leading
- 2:57:18the Yankees and runs butted in with seven now,
- 2:57:21getting six of the seven on two swings of the
- 2:57:24bat. A base is loaded triple. to beat Milwaukee
- 2:57:28and the three round homer tonight. Bobby Mercer
- 2:57:32driving the other run in with a double. Mercer
- 2:57:35had two hits and Thurman Munson continued his
- 2:57:37hitting streak through eight games with a couple
- 2:57:40of base knocks. Well that's it. The Yankees won
- 2:57:42it. And the final score once again here at Yankee
- 2:57:46Stadium was the New York Yankees four and the
- 2:57:49Oakland A's two. And now this is Frank Messer
- 2:57:53speaking for Bill Rizzuto and for Bill White.
- 2:57:56For our producer and statistician Bill King and
- 2:57:59for engineer Frank Steele, saying so long from
- 2:58:02Yankee Stadium in New York.
