- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, everybody, Brian Smith here with the Iron Team series and your daily influence.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_01]: And today we're going to be talking about a topic that I have had a challenge with.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_01]: And that a lot of leaders struggle with.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: We struggle with them in different times.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: So different evolutionary aspects of our leadership.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: Oftentimes early on, maybe later, just depends on our specific areas of influence, and you know, where we find ourselves in the different seasons of our life, but the topic is influence versus legibility.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: Walking that fine line, the differentiates what it is to be liked and what it is to be a positive responsible influence.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: And look, when we are positive and responsible, we might not always be likable.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: And you know,
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: true positive and responsible influences rooted in integrity, but integrity often risks like ability.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: And it's okay.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: Look at responsible influence.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: We emphasize that true influence requires doing what's right, not what's easy.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: I have many times made that mistake on what's easy, not what's right, and every time it's costly in some way, money, relationships, pride, or worse.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: And it also often means that
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to have to prioritize our principles over popularity, over feeling good about maybe a moment or a particular influence that we're having Seeing what it does to others how it could have consequences it could be painful.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: And it is especially difficult when we're holding others accountable while we're making very hard decisions.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: But look from a smart perspective, influence about creating clarity and consistency.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: Not comfort.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's also really good to know that strong influence may challenge the status quo, which can feel unpopular in the moment, but it drives long-term growth.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: Long-term sustainability and viability come from sticking to our core values, come from staying on mission, come from taking the high road that we talk about.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: like ability fades when hard truths are told, but influence lasts when those truths help others grow.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: And it does survive the test of time.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: I wish I knew that when I was younger, I would have made different decisions.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: Though I wonder sometimes understanding the ripple effect how those decisions
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: Had I made them differently, then might have gotten the way of some of the learning opportunities I have.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: So, I don't look back at those challenges with regret.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: I look at them for what they are, part of my evolution, part of my ability to talk about it with you today.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: In look real smart leaders, they don't lead from a position of trying to be liked.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: What we really want is to be respected and trusted.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: And oftentimes we blur the lines between, well, if I'm light, I'm respected and trusted.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: I know a lot, too many leaders who are light, quite honestly, and authentically light, but they're not as trusted or respected as they think they are.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a reason why.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: But being light can open doors, but being trusted keeps those doors open.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the things you can see in responsible and positive responsible influencers is they have long-term relationships.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: They have long-term viable histories with certain things.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, they'll have their door shut on the way where they've made those mistakes as I do.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: But you'll notice a trend towards longevity viability.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: and smart leadership prioritizes clarity, consistency, and accountability, and accountability isn't a consequence.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: Accountability is just there to help us learn.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: And it sometimes means setting boundaries, delivering direct feedback.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: They're making decisions that might not win a clause, but they do win long-term respect over time.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: They do eventually fall in line and reconcile.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes that means we have to check ourselves that we're thinking not only about what happens now, but what is the influence of that later?
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's us back to being thoughtful, intentional, and mindful about what we do as leaders and how we grow and teach those around us as leaders.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: So we do this with smart communication, clear, honest, tightly communication, because it builds trust faster.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: Look, plattery is just like it sounds flat.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: It might get you past a moment, but as soon as that flattery falls apart, people think to wonder, well, are they blowing sunshine, are they a yes man, looking like ability can invite connection, but influence inspires performance and ownership, so people will
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: But they had a stopping point.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: They will only go so far.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: But if you influence them in a positive and responsible way, they will perform at a higher level and they will take ownership of what they're ownership of what they're doing and they will go in places for you that like ability could never take them.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: So look, it's good to be liked.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's better to be trusted.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's good to be liked, it's better to be respected.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not about being everyone's favorite.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's about being the one they trust when it really matters, that's leadership.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: So I hope you will be as positive and responsibility you can.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: Think about what we talk today, and I hope that you have some kind of a valuable takeaway that you can use within your area of influence.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: To not just be liked, but to be that leader,
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: that people look to because they trust you, they respect you and they want to support you and the organizations and the areas of influence you have together to be successful and viable.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you have a great day and we'll talk to you again soon.
