- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. A Feria of the thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost with commemoration of Saint Zephyrinus, August 26 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:25Of today's mass, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following, Saint Zephyrinus succeeded Saint Victor on the pontifical throne and like him was martyred. He abolished in the celebration of the holy sacrifice the use of wooden chalices which were replaced by glass ones. He prescribed that all the faithful should receive Holy Communion on Easter day.
- 0:55He had to defend the dogma of the unity of God in the Trinity of Persons against the Sabellians. Besides this intestine strife, he had to suffer persecution. God always supported him in his trials in order to enable him to support the flock of Christ. He died in the year of our Lord 217 after a pontificate of seventeen years. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost.
- 1:37Amen. The Introit. Bethink thee, Lord, of thy covenant. Wilt thou leave us quite forgotten, souls unbefriended but for thee? Bestir thyself, O Lord, to vindicate thy own cause, and do not neglect the plea of thy suppliants.
- 2:03O God, why hast thou altogether abandoned us? Sheep of thy own pasturing, must we feel the fires of thy vengeance? Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Bethink thee, Lord, of thy covenant, wilt thou leave us quite forgotten, souls unbefriended but for thee? Bestir thyself, O Lord, to vindicate thy own cause, and do not neglect the plea of thy suppliants.
- 2:53The Collect. Let us pray. Almighty everlasting God grant us increase of faith, hope, and charity and fit us to obtain what thou dost promise by making us love what thou commandest. A commemoration of Saint Zephyrinus. O Almighty God, to us who rejoice over the merits of blessed Zephyrinus, Thy Martyr and Bishop, grant we beseech Thee to profit by the example He has left us through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 3:47Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Galatians. Brethren, the promises you know of were made to Abraham and his offspring. It does not, by the way, say to thy descendants as if it meant a number of people. It says to thy offspring in the singular, meaning Christ.
- 4:17And this is my contention. The law coming into being four hundred and thirty years afterwards cannot unmake the disposition which God made so long ago and cancel the promise. If our inheritance depends on observing the law, it is not the inheritance secured to us by promise. That was promised to Abraham as a free gift. What then is the purpose of the law?
- 4:51It was brought in to make room for transgression while we waited for the coming of that posterity to whom the promise had been made. Its terms were dictated by angels acting through a spokesman. A spokesman represents more than one, and there's only one God. Is the law an infringement then of god's promises? That is not to be thought of.
- 5:23Doubtless, if a law had been given that was capable of imparting life to us, it would have been for the law to bring us justification. But in fact, scripture represents us as all under the bondage of sin. It was faith in Jesus Christ that was to impart the promised blessing to all those who believe in him. The gradual, Bethink thee, Lord, of thy covenant, wilt thou leave us quite forgotten, souls unbefriended but for thee? Bestir thyself, Lord, to vindicate thy own cause.
- 6:10Do not forget the taunts hurled at thy servants. Alleluia. Alleluia. Lord, thou hast been our refuge from generation unto generation. Alleluia.
- 6:31A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. At this time Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem and was passing between Samaria and Galilee. And as he was going into a village, 10 men that were lepers came towards him. They stood far off crying aloud, Jesus, master, have pity on us. He met them with the words, go and show yourselves to the priests and thereupon as they went they were made clean.
- 7:15One of them finding that he was cured came back praising God aloud and threw himself at Jesus' feet with his face to the ground to thank him. And this was a Samaritan. Jesus answered, were not all 10 made clean and the other nine where are they? Not one has come back to give God the praise except this stranger. And he said to him, Arise and go on thy way.
- 7:56Thy faith has brought thee recovery. The offertory. Lord, my trust in thee is not shaken. Still I cry, thou art my God. My fate is in thy hands.
- 8:18The secret. Look favorably, Lord, upon thy people and upon thy people's gifts. Let this offering move thy compassion, persuading thee to grant us pardon and an answer to our prayers. A commemoration of Saint Zephyrinus. Hallow the gifts we have dedicated to thee, Lord, and at the intercession of thy blessed martyr, Bishop Zephyrhinus, let them move thee to hear us and have mercy through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 9:09Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
- 10:08Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Lord, thou hast given us bread from heaven, all contentment, all sweetness to the taste.
- 10:36The post communion. Let us pray. We who have partaken of the heavenly sacrament pray Lord that we may draw ever nearer to our eternal ransom. A commemoration of Saint Zephyrinus. O Lord, may this communion cleanse us from guilt and at the intercession of thy blessed martyr bishop Zephyrinus, bring us a share of healing from on high through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages.
- 11:23Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. Saint Severinus, pray for us.
