- 0:00When we see deeply religious or spiritual people, we expect to
- 0:05see people who are serious, reserved, and who carry an air
- 0:10of distance from the things of the world.
- 0:14This expectation has been so deeply embedded in the human
- 0:18psyche that we almost unconsciously take up this
- 0:22attitude when we tread the spiritual path.
- 0:25Consider the austerity and silence of monasteries and
- 0:29cloisters, or even the churches, temples, mosques or synagogues
- 0:35that abound throughout the world.
- 0:38It almost feels like heresy to relax, enjoy a laugh, or just to
- 0:44be generally cheerful. The austere monk is the image
- 0:49that many hold for what true spirituality looks like.
- 0:53The path of austerity, struggle, suffering for one spiritual
- 0:58practice, becoming a martyr for God is the way we think about
- 1:04spiritual practice. This increases the perceived gap
- 1:09between the spiritual or religious life and the external
- 1:13life in the world. It also tends to lead to a
- 1:17severe strict view of things and can lead to judgmental practices
- 1:23that want to limit, constrict, punish and stamp out anything
- 1:30that varies from this model. There was a famous film in the
- 1:351960s which centered around the story of a novice in a cloister
- 1:39in Austria who did not quite fit in.
- 1:43She was boisterous, smiling, laughing, singing, and otherwise
- 1:48finding full expression of the joy of living and the
- 1:52developmental needs of her vital being.
- 1:56The nuns discussed in song the trouble she was, but the Mother
- 2:02Superior supported her with the statement that she makes me
- 2:06laugh. The happiness she brought to the
- 2:09environment she lived in was recognized as something valuable
- 2:13and worth while. Eventually the nuns found a
- 2:17solution to the problem by sending her out to become a
- 2:21caretaker for a number of children of a widower who was
- 2:25raising the children in a quasi military style.
- 2:30She succeeded in bringing out the natural joyfulness of the
- 2:33children and eventually won over their father, and they were
- 2:38married and faced the troubles of the Third Reich in Austria
- 2:43together with joy in their hearts and a song on their lips.
- 2:48The film The Sound of Music was based on a real underlying story
- 2:54and captivated hearts everywhere for its musical delights.
- 2:58But the deeper message is one that bears consideration,
- 3:04perhaps the austere, strict judgmental view of many
- 3:09traditional religious or spiritual traditions.
- 3:13Or let us not leave out the materialist versions based on
- 3:16economic models or political systems and ideologies.
- 3:22Is not the only way, or even the best possible way.
- 3:28The Law of Attraction holds that whatever we focus upon, we bring
- 3:32toward us. If we focus on difficulties and
- 3:36struggles, that is what we get. If we shift our focus to the
- 3:41divine, to the beauty, the harmony, the oneness of the
- 3:46creation, the uniqueness and the bliss, that is the secret air
- 3:50that we all breathe in. In the Brahmanandavali of the
- 3:57Titiria Upanishad, the Rishi states as translated by Sri
- 4:02Aurobindo, Quote. When he hath gotten him this
- 4:07delight, then it is that this creature becomes a thing of
- 4:12bliss. For who could labour to draw in
- 4:15the breath, or who could have the strength to breathe it out,
- 4:20if there were not that bliss in the heaven of his heart, the
- 4:23ether within his being, It is He that is the fountain of bliss.
- 4:31End Quote. In Savitri, a legend and a
- 4:35symbol, Srioro Vendo calls forth this power of bliss.
- 4:41Quote O radiant fountain of the world's delight, world free and
- 4:47unattainable above, O bliss, whoever dwelleth deep, hid
- 4:52within, while men seek the outside and never find.
- 4:59End Quote. If the seeker focuses his
- 5:03attention on the oneness, on the higher ranges of consciousness,
- 5:08on the bliss that lives in the secret heart, rather than on all
- 5:13the petty concerns and struggles of the external being, he can
- 5:17tread a different path, which Shrioro Bindo and the Mother
- 5:22call the sunlit path. Shrioro Bindo notes Quote.
- 5:29There is nothing spiritually wrong in being glad and
- 5:32cheerful. On the contrary, it is the right
- 5:36thing. As for struggles and aspiration,
- 5:40struggles are really not indispensable to progress, and
- 5:44there are many people who get so habituated to the struggling
- 5:48attitude that they have all the time struggles and very little
- 5:52else. That is not desirable.
- 5:56There is a sunlit path as well as a gloomy 1, and it is the
- 6:02better of the two. End Quote reference Shrioro
- 6:08Bindo and the Mother Looking from Within, Chapter 5,
- 6:12Attitudes on the Path, page 140.
