- 0:01I once thought all these things were so very important, but now
- 0:05I consider them worthless because of what Christ
- 0:09has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared
- 0:13with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.
- 0:17I have discarded everything else, counting it all
- 0:21as garbage, so that I may have Christ
- 0:25and become one with Him. I no
- 0:29longer count on my own goodness or my own ability to
- 0:33obey God's law, but I trust Christ to
- 0:37save me. Can you hear
- 0:41the passion and the heart of Paul in those
- 0:45words? He learned an important and
- 0:49valuable lesson, and that is this: Being
- 0:53religious and following a set of rules and
- 0:57leaning on your own strength and effort to try
- 1:00to please God by following His law is like
- 1:04walking around in a big heavy spacesuit on the
- 1:08bottom of the ocean trying to reach Mount Everest
- 1:13while you're stuck at the bottom of the ocean in your spacesuit.
- 1:18Listen in as we unpack Philippians chapter 3
- 1:22today. Welcome to the Daily Audio
- 1:26Torah. Today is October 2nd. Now let's continue
- 1:29our journey reading through the entire Bible in one year.
- 1:32This week we are reading from the New Living Translation for the Old Testament
- 1:36and for the New Testament.
- 1:41Isaiah 66.
- 1:481-24. This is what the Lord says: Heaven is my throne,
- 1:51and the earth is my footstool. Could you ever build
- 1:54me a temple as good as that? Could you build a dwelling place for
- 1:58me? My hands have made both heaven and earth, and they are mine.
- 2:03I, the Lord, have spoken.
- 2:06I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts.
- 2:10Who tremble at my word.
- 2:16But those who choose their own ways, delighting in their sins,
- 2:21are cursed. Their offerings will not be accepted.
- 2:24When such people sacrifice an ox, it is no more acceptable
- 2:28than a human sacrifice. When they sacrifice a lamb or
- 2:32bring an offering of grain, it is as bad as putting a dog or the
- 2:36blood of a pig on the altar. When they burn
- 2:40incense, it is as if they have blessed an idol.
- 2:43I will send great troubles against them, all the things they feared.
- 2:47For when I called, they did not answer; when I spoke,
- 2:51they did not listen. They deliberately sinned before
- 2:55my very eyes and chose to do what they know
- 2:59I despise. Hear this message from
- 3:02the Lord: and tremble at his words.
- 3:06Your close relatives hate you and throw you out for
- 3:10being loyal to my name. Let the Lord
- 3:14be honored, they scoff, be joyful in him!
- 3:18But they will be put to shame. What is all the commotion
- 3:22in the city? What is that terrible noise from the temple?
- 3:26It is the voice of the Lord taking vengeance against his enemies.
- 3:30Before the birth pangs even begin, Jerusalem gives birth to
- 3:34a son. Who has ever heard or seen of anything as strange
- 3:39as this? Has a nation ever been born in a single day?
- 3:43Has a country ever come forth in a mere moment?
- 3:46But by the time Jerusalem's birth pangs begin,
- 3:50the baby will be born, the nation will come forth.
- 3:54Would I ever bring this nation to the point of birth and then not deliver
- 3:57it? asks the Lord. No, I would never keep
- 4:00this nation from being born, says your God.
- 4:04Rejoice with Jerusalem! Be glad with her,
- 4:07all you who love her and mourn for her! Delight in
- 4:11Jerusalem! Drink deeply of her glory, even as an
- 4:15infant drinks at its mother's generous breasts. Peace and
- 4:19prosperity will overflow Jerusalem like a river, says the Lord.
- 4:23The wealth of the nations will flow to her. Her children will be
- 4:27nursed at her breasts, carried in her arms, and treated with love.
- 4:31I will comfort you there as a child is comforted by its mother.
- 4:35When you see these things, your heart will rejoice.
- 4:39Vigorous health will be yours. Everyone will see the good
- 4:43hand of the Lord on His people and His anger against His enemies.
- 4:47See, the Lord is coming with fire, and His swift chariots
- 4:51of destruction roar like a whirlwind. He will bring punishment
- 4:56with the fury of His anger and the flaming fire of His hot rebuke.
- 5:00The Lord will punish the world by fire and by His
- 5:03sword, and many will be killed by the Lord.
- 5:11Those who purify themselves in a sacred garden,
- 5:14feasting on pork and rats and other forbidden meats, will come
- 5:18to a terrible end, says the Lord. I can see what
- 5:22they are doing, and I know what they are thinking. So I will gather all
- 5:25nations and peoples together, and they will see My glory.
- 5:29I will perform a sign among them, and I will send those
- 5:32who survive to be messengers to the nations: to Tarshish,
- 5:37to the Libyans and Lydians, who are famous as archers;
- 5:41to Tubal and Greece, and to all the lands beyond the sea
- 5:44that have not heard of My fame or seen My glory. There they will
- 5:48declare My glory to the nations. They will bring the remnant
- 5:52of your people back from every nation. They will bring them to My holy
- 5:56mountain in Jerusalem as an offering to the Lord.
- 6:00They will ride on horses, in chariots and wagons,
- 6:03and on mules and camels, says the Lord. And I will appoint some
- 6:07of those who return to be My priests and Levites. I,
- 6:11the Lord, have spoken. As surely as My new heavens and
- 6:15earth will remain, so will you always be My people
- 6:19with a name that will never disappear, says the Lord.
- 6:22All humanity will come to worship Me from week to week and from month
- 6:26to month. And as they go out, they will see the dead bodies of
- 6:30those who have rebelled against Me. For the worms that devour them will
- 6:34never die, and the fire that burns them will never go out.
- 6:38All who pass by will view them with utter horror.
- 6:44Philippians 3:4-21.
- 6:47Yet I, Paul, could have confidence in myself if
- 6:51anyone could. If others have reason for confidence in
- 6:55their own efforts, I have even more. For I was circumcised
- 6:59when I was 8 days old, having been born into a pure-blooded
- 7:02Jewish family that is a branch of the tribe of Benjamin.
- 7:06So I am a real Jew if there ever was one.
- 7:10What's more, I was a member of the Pharisees
- 7:13who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law.
- 7:17And zealous? Yes, in fact, I harshly persecuted
- 7:21the church, and I obeyed the Jewish law so carefully that I
- 7:25was never accused of any fault. I once thought all these
- 7:29things were so very important, but now I consider them worthless
- 7:34because of what Christ has done.
- 7:39Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain
- 7:43of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have discarded
- 7:47everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I may have
- 7:50Christ and become one with Him. I no longer
- 7:54count on my own goodness or my ability to obey God's Law,
- 7:58but I trust Christ to save me. For God's way of
- 8:02making us right with Himself depends on faith.
- 8:05As a result, I can really know Christ and experience the mighty power
- 8:09that raised Him from the dead. I can learn what it means
- 8:13to suffer with Him, sharing in His death, so that somehow I
- 8:17can experience the resurrection from the dead.
- 8:20I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things, or that
- 8:25I have already reached perfection. But I keep working toward that day
- 8:28when I will finally be all that Christ Jesus saved for me
- 8:32and wants me to be. No, dear brothers and sisters,
- 8:36I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing
- 8:39all my energies on this one thing: forgetting the past
- 8:43and looking forward to what lies ahead,
- 8:47I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the
- 8:50prize for which God through Christ Jesus is calling us up to heaven.
- 8:55I hope all of you are mature Christians, will agree
- 8:59on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe
- 9:03God will make it plain to you. But we must be sure to
- 9:06obey the truth that we have learned already. Dear brothers
- 9:10and sisters, pattern your lives after mine and learn from those who follow our
- 9:15example. For I have told you often before, and I say it
- 9:19again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct
- 9:23shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. Their future
- 9:27is eternal destruction. Their god is
- 9:30their appetite. They brag about shameful things, and all they
- 9:34think about is this life here on earth. But we are citizens
- 9:39of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives,
- 9:44and we are eagerly waiting for Him to return as our
- 9:48Savior. He will take these weak mortal bodies of ours and
- 9:52change them into glorious bodies like His own,
- 9:55using the same power that He will use to conquer everything,
- 9:59everywhere.
- 10:05Psalm 74:1-23.
- 10:09O God, why have You rejected us forever? Why is Your anger
- 10:13so intense against the sheep of Your own pasture? Remember that
- 10:17we are the people You chose in ancient times, the tribe You redeemed
- 10:21as Your own special possession. And remember Jerusalem,
- 10:25your home here on earth. Walk through the awful
- 10:28ruins of the city. See how the enemy has destroyed your sanctuary.
- 10:33There your enemies shouted their victorious battle
- 10:36cries. There they set up their battle standards. They chopped down the entrance
- 10:41like woodcutters in a forest with axes and picks.
- 10:45They smashed the carved paneling. They set the sanctuary
- 10:48on fire, burning it to the ground. They utterly defiled
- 10:52the place that bears Your holy name. Then they thought, Let's destroy
- 10:56everything! So they burned down all the places
- 10:59where God was worshiped. We see no miraculous signs as
- 11:03evidence that You will save us. All the prophets are gone;
- 11:07no one can tell us when it will end. How long, O God, will You
- 11:11allow our enemies to mock You? Will You let them dishonor Your name
- 11:15forever? Why do You hold back Your strong right hand?
- 11:19Unleash your powerful fist and deliver a death blow.
- 11:23You, O God, are my King from ages past,
- 11:26bringing salvation to the earth.
- 11:31You split the sea by your strength and smashed the sea monsters'
- 11:34heads. You crushed the heads of the Leviathan and let the
- 11:38desert animals eat him. You caused the springs and
- 11:41streams to gush forth, and you dried up rivers that never run dry.
- 11:46Both day and night belong to You. You made the starlight
- 11:49and the sun. You set the boundaries of the earth,
- 11:52and You make both summer and winter. See how these enemies scoff
- 11:57at You, Lord. A foolish nation has dishonored Your name.
- 12:01Don't let these wild beasts destroy Your doves. Don't forget
- 12:05Your afflicted people forever. Remember Your covenant promises,
- 12:09for the land is full of darkness and violence. Don't let the
- 12:13downtrodden be constantly disgraced. Instead,
- 12:16let these poor and needy ones give praise to Your name.
- 12:20Arise, O God, and defend Your cause.
- 12:23Remember how these fools insult You all day long.
- 12:26Don't overlook these things Your enemies have said. Their uproar of
- 12:31rebellion grows ever louder.
- 12:35Proverbs 24:15-16. Do not lie
- 12:39in wait, like an outlaw at the home of the godly,
- 12:42and don't raid the house where the godly live. They may
- 12:46trip 7 times, but each time they will rise again. But one calamity
- 12:50is enough to lay the wicked low.
- 12:55I want to speak to you today from Isaiah chapter 66, and then we're going
- 12:59to jump into Philippians chapter 3. And Isaiah
- 13:0366 is the final chapter of the book, and it almost
- 13:09reads and feels and sounds like we're reading the Book of Revelation.
- 13:13There are 66 chapters in the Book of Isaiah,
- 13:17and there are 66 books in all of the Bible.
- 13:21And if you, you could, some have compared reading the Book of Isaiah
- 13:25is like reading the entire Bible. And so Isaiah chapter
- 13:2966 definitely has tones and themes about
- 13:34the end of days and about God's final judgment upon
- 13:37the wicked of the earth and about His new
- 13:40heavens and new earth. So I have a question for you.
- 13:46Do you tremble at the Word of the Lord?
- 13:51And this is brought up a couple of times in this chapter.
- 13:55In verse 3 it says, I will bless those who
- 13:59have humble and contrite hearts,
- 14:02who tremble at My Word.
- 14:07And when God circumcises
- 14:11your heart, it's like a cutting,
- 14:14a cutting of your heart. And sometimes there
- 14:18are parts of our heart that can become calloused or
- 14:21hardened, and God has to do a work to cut away
- 14:25that callus, to cut away the hardness that's
- 14:28there. And when He does that cutting, it's hurtful.
- 14:32It hurts, but it's good. It's because it
- 14:35tenderizes our heart and it makes our heart soft.
- 14:40And so when we take time, when the Holy Spirit moves upon us to
- 14:44repent, that's a tenderizing of the heart.
- 14:48And when our heart gets tender, that's when we can
- 14:52tremble at His Word. Because when we
- 14:55read it, we become convicted over
- 15:00some of the places in our lives where we're not— where
- 15:03we're in sin, we're in rebellion, and we don't line up
- 15:07with the Word. Continuing on in verse 5, hear this
- 15:11message from the Lord and tremble at
- 15:15His words. Now this next verse
- 15:19really spoke to my heart. It just really lit
- 15:22off the page to me, and I don't know if there may be some of
- 15:26you who can also relate to this. It says, your close
- 15:30relatives hate you and throw you out for being loyal
- 15:33to my name. Let the Lord be honored,
- 15:37they scoff. Be joyful in Him, but they
- 15:41will be put to shame.
- 15:45So do you have a family member, perhaps a brother
- 15:49or a sister or a son or a daughter that
- 15:54has basically canceled you.
- 15:57You're on their do not contact list.
- 16:01You don't get to see them very much. And there's not much of a
- 16:05relationship there. And it's mainly because they don't really want to be around a person
- 16:09who's filled with the Holy Spirit, who's filled with the Spirit of Jesus
- 16:13Christ. And, and they're off in the world and
- 16:16being around you brings conviction to them.
- 16:19So they don't really want to be around you.
- 16:23And how painful that is, how agonizingly painful
- 16:26that is, that rejection.
- 16:30So this verse really speaks to that.
- 16:34Your close relatives hate you and throw you out for being loyal to
- 16:38my name. And they scoff and mock and there's no honor.
- 16:42There's no respect. And yet God says
- 16:47that this would happen. Continuing on in this chapter,
- 16:52it goes on to say about Jerusalem
- 16:58being born like a nation,
- 17:02and I am going to use a different translation. The translation I am going to
- 17:05use is the New King James because I think it says it better.
- 17:17Starting in verse 7,
- 17:27before she travailed, she brought forth.
- 17:30Before her pain came, she was delivered
- 17:34of a man-child. Who has heard such a thing?
- 17:38Who has seen such things? Shall the earth be made to
- 17:42bring forth in one day, or shall a nation be born at once?
- 17:47For as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth
- 17:51her children. Shall I bring to the birth and not cause
- 17:55to bring forth, says the Lord? Shall I cause to bring forth
- 17:59and shut the womb, says your God? So this is painting a
- 18:03picture of a woman who's giving birth, and what
- 18:08happens in this picture is that she gives birth, and then after she
- 18:12gives birth, then the labor pains come. It's backwards.
- 18:16Normally a woman has labor pains and then she gives birth,
- 18:19but in this scene, she gives birth to a man-child,
- 18:24which I believe is foreshadowing Jesus
- 18:28Christ. And afterwards, then she goes through the birth pangs.
- 18:32And then it goes on, shall a nation be born at once in one day?
- 18:37For as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.
- 18:40So in some ways, this verse has
- 18:44been partially fulfilled. The nation
- 18:48of Israel was born in one day on May
- 18:5214th, 1948. And immediately, within 24
- 18:56hours, the Arab nations around her declared
- 19:00war against her and came against her. So she
- 19:03was born in one day. But that was secular
- 19:08Zion that was born. Secular Israel as a nation has
- 19:11been born. But there's another birthing that's
- 19:15going to happen, and that is the Heavenly
- 19:18Jerusalem that's in heaven will one day descend to the
- 19:22earth, and there's going to be a biblical Zion that
- 19:29will be born. So she's going to give— this nation is going to give
- 19:32birth to her children. And this same
- 19:36picture is also painted for us in Revelation chapter
- 19:4012. So it's kind of describing, I believe, the same
- 19:44event from a different angle. And so in Revelation
- 19:48chapter 12, it says, and now a
- 19:52great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun,
- 19:56and this woman is Zion, with the moon
- 20:00under her feet, and on her head a garland of 12 stars.
- 20:04The 12 stars are pointing us to the 12 tribes
- 20:08and also to the 12 apostles. Then being with child,
- 20:12she's pregnant, she cries out in labor and in pain
- 20:16to give birth. And another sign— so she's pregnant
- 20:20and she's about to give birth, just like what we just read in Isaiah 66.
- 20:25Verse 3: And another sign appeared in heaven. Behold, a great fiery
- 20:29red dragon having 7 heads and 10 horns and 7 diadems
- 20:34on his head. His tail drew a third
- 20:37of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood
- 20:41before the woman who was ready to give birth to devour her
- 20:45child as soon as it was born. So 1/3 of
- 20:48the stars of heaven, that would be 1/3 of the angels
- 20:52that rebelled and followed Lucifer, and those
- 20:56angels became demons and were cast down to the earth.
- 21:00And Satan tried to devour Jesus
- 21:04when he was born in that he worked through the
- 21:09king at the time, and the king made
- 21:13a decree to kill all boys 2 years and
- 21:18under. So this
- 21:23was Satan trying to cut off and to murder
- 21:27Jesus when he's just a baby. Then verse
- 21:325, she bore a male child who was to rule all
- 21:36nations with a rod of iron. That's Speaking of Christ.
- 21:40He rules with a rod of iron. And her child was caught up to God
- 21:44and to His throne. That's talking about His resurrection after
- 21:49He was crucified, and then He was resurrected, and now He's up in heaven
- 21:53at the right hand of the Father. Verse 6, then the woman
- 21:57fled into the wilderness where she has a place
- 22:01prepared by God that she should feed her that they
- 22:06should feed her there 1,260 days.
- 22:10I believe that verse is talking about a 3.5-year Great
- 22:14Tribulation period where she flees into the wilderness and God
- 22:19takes care of her. This woman, you could, you could say, is like the
- 22:22Bride of Christ. She is Zion,
- 22:25the nation and people called Zion. It is
- 22:29one family. It's the Bride of Christ,
- 22:32and it goes on. So what
- 22:36we read in Isaiah 66 though is this woman called Zion who's
- 22:41a nation. She's pregnant, she gives birth to a son, and then afterwards she
- 22:45has her labor pains. So coming
- 22:49back into Isaiah 66,
- 22:54verse 20, they will bring the remnant of your people back from
- 22:58every nation. They will bring them to My holy mountain in
- 23:01Jerusalem as an offering to the Lord. This is talking
- 23:05about the ingathering of all of the Jews from all of the nations
- 23:09to where they have been scattered, bringing them back to the Holy
- 23:12Land. Verse 22, as surely as My new heaven
- 23:16and new earth will remain,
- 23:19so will you always be My people with
- 23:22a name that will never disappear,
- 23:27says the Lord. All humanity will come to worship
- 23:31me from week to week and from month to month. And as
- 23:34they go out, they will see the dead bodies of those who have rebelled
- 23:39against me. So again, this is talking about
- 23:42the end after the Lord has come back
- 23:46and judged the nations and judged the wicked. And now he's setting up his new
- 23:50heavens and new earth. And now Jesus is ruling and reigning.
- 23:54From Jerusalem for 1,000 years.
- 23:58So this is really another angle of
- 24:02what you're going to see and understand and read from Revelation.
- 24:05Isaiah 66 is giving us a glimpse of that time as
- 24:09well. So now I want to jump into Philippians
- 24:13chapter 3, and Paul is talking
- 24:17about, you know, who, who's going to have
- 24:20confidence in the flesh. And he
- 24:24talks about his credentials. He says, I was a religious person.
- 24:27I had all the credentials you could possibly think of.
- 24:31That he was circumcised when he was 8 days old.
- 24:35He was born into a pure-blooded Jewish family that is a branch
- 24:39of the tribe of Benjamin. He's a real Jew if there ever was one.
- 24:43He was a member of the Pharisees who demand the strictest obedience
- 24:47to Jewish law. And very zealous,
- 24:51and he persecuted the early church. He obeyed the Jewish law
- 24:54very carefully so that he was never accused of any
- 24:58fault. That would be like if you say one day,
- 25:01oh, okay, I'm going to be a religious person.
- 25:05I'm going to go to church faithfully every Sunday. In fact,
- 25:08I'm going to become a Sunday school teacher, and, and then I'm
- 25:12going to go to Bible college and I'm going to get my degree. And then
- 25:16I'm gonna, you know, be a maybe an adult Sunday
- 25:21school teacher, and I do all of these things, and by
- 25:25the letter of the law, I'm there every Sunday. But if
- 25:29I don't have a heart relationship with Jesus Christ,
- 25:34it's all nothing but just dead works,
- 25:38and it means nothing. And Paul goes on to say in
- 25:42verse 7, I once thought all these things were
- 25:46very important, that were so very important, but now I consider
- 25:50them worthless. Or in another translation, I consider them as
- 25:54rubbish because of what Christ has
- 25:58done. Our righteous
- 26:01deeds are like filthy rags in the eyes
- 26:05of God. We cannot measure up.
- 26:11Jesus puts His robe of righteousness
- 26:15upon us when we don't deserve
- 26:20it. It's simply His grace that
- 26:24when we repent and our heart is circumcised
- 26:28and we turn from our wicked ways and we repent of our sins
- 26:33and we cry out to Him and ask Him to forgive us,
- 26:37He covers us with His blood. He covers
- 26:40us with His robe of righteousness. He covers our nakedness
- 26:44and our shame. It's a divine exchange.
- 26:50He did the work that we could not possibly
- 26:54do.
- 26:58Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless
- 27:02gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.
- 27:06I've discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage,
- 27:11so that I may have Christ and become one with
- 27:15Him. Can you hear Paul's
- 27:19heart and his passion that he
- 27:23is on a journey? He's on a race, and he must
- 27:28have Christ. He's pursuing Christ. He wants to become one
- 27:33with Christ. I no longer
- 27:36count on my own goodness or my ability to
- 27:40obey God's law, but I trust Christ to
- 27:49It would be a little bit like this.
- 27:53If you're wearing a huge spacesuit outfit,
- 27:56it, and it's extremely heavy. And you have
- 27:59lead shoes that maybe each weigh 20 pounds each,
- 28:0420 pounds on your left foot, 20 pounds on your right foot. And you have
- 28:07this big, huge contraption that you're wearing as
- 28:11though you're going to walk on the moon. And then somebody throws you
- 28:14overboard from a ship into the ocean and
- 28:17you sink to the bottom of the ocean.
- 28:21And with all that heavy gear on, there's no way you're going to swim
- 28:26up to the surface and get any air. You've got all that heavy trappings
- 28:30on. And that's what
- 28:34it is if you try to have any kind of relationship
- 28:38with God by religion, by works.
- 28:42It's like wearing that spacesuit and those heavy boots.
- 28:47At the bottom of the ocean, you're not going to get to the surface.
- 28:50You're not going to get any air. That you have
- 28:53to jettison and get rid of all of that and
- 29:00ride on the back of the eagle.
- 29:03Almighty God, the eagle, ride on his back and he will take you up,
- 29:08upward, upward, upward to ascend into the
- 29:12spiritual heights. We're not meant to be walking around in
- 29:16a big spacesuit on the bottom of the ocean.
- 29:20But that's what it's like if you're in the works mode.
- 29:24If you're in the legalism mode, if you're in a religious spirit mode,
- 29:28that's what it's like. Because your efforts and your flesh, it's never
- 29:33enough. It's never good enough. And when you
- 29:36walk in the Spirit, you're tucked under the feathers of the Almighty.
- 29:41You're riding on His back and He's doing all the effort. He's doing all the
- 29:45work. You're just, you're there for the ride. And He's flying
- 29:50and soaring and taking you upward.
- 29:54Okay, that's all I have for today. Have a blessed day and
- 29:57we'll see you tomorrow. Shalom.
