- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio. Right taking a shot and it's able to
- 0:13Speaker 1: kill it at one strike, it'll be Robinson to the
- 0:18Speaker 1: second level and beyond touchdown. That's b Sean Robins said.
- 0:22Speaker 1: He waited too long and down he goes to the
- 0:25Speaker 1: physicality of Jayla Carter Mile under immediate rut your off
- 0:30Speaker 1: hitch and can not escaped. Will Anderson hold my gosh,
- 0:34Speaker 1: Strout fires man. It is grabbed in the ends up CJ. Strout. Wow,
- 0:38Speaker 1: what a crow. But is one of the biggest stops
- 0:50Speaker 1: along the path to the draft. The NFL Scouting Combine
- 0:55Speaker 1: Here in Indianapolis, Indiana, the twenty twenty three version out
- 0:59Speaker 1: off and running. All talk right now but in two days,
- 1:02Speaker 1: three hundred nineteen of the very best college football players
- 1:07Speaker 1: with an on field interview as they go through off
- 1:09Speaker 1: field interviews as well. Here there is the site of
- 1:12Speaker 1: the Combine drills, Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Colts
- 1:16Speaker 1: this week, home to the NFL Scouting Combine. Welcome everybody,
- 1:20Speaker 1: another live hour of NFL Now at the Combine here
- 1:24Speaker 1: with you in Indianapolis. I'm Red Lewis, I'm here with
- 1:26Speaker 1: NFL Network insider Ian rappaport Ian. I know this is
- 1:30Speaker 1: one of your favorite weeks of the year mine as well.
- 1:33Speaker 1: So much going on, but as I mentioned, it is
- 1:35Speaker 1: all talk right now. Right it's all coaches and gms
- 1:38Speaker 1: up at the podiums like the ones here just behind us,
- 1:41Speaker 1: and we also had a few join us here. Andy
- 1:45Speaker 1: Reid is still to come in this edition of NFL
- 1:48Speaker 1: now you see him around. Yeah, But in the meantime,
- 1:52Speaker 1: let's get to what is new right now, and that is,
- 1:55Speaker 1: of course, with some of the gms and coaches already
- 1:58Speaker 1: at the podium, we've got some news to get to.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Russell Wilson, big part of the Denver Broncos. You cycle.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Not a great year obviously in Denver, which is now
- 2:09Speaker 1: between you. Head coach Sean Payton was at the podium today,
- 2:14Speaker 1: the new head coach of the Broncos, talking about Russell Wilson,
- 2:16Speaker 1: talking about his coaching staff and much more here now
- 2:18Speaker 1: the head coach of the Broncos. We've spoken text, but
- 2:25Speaker 1: this is this is the time of the year where
- 2:26Speaker 1: these guys who are away for you know, and I've
- 2:31Speaker 1: talked periodically with Drew as well. Those guys I think
- 2:33Speaker 1: lived near each other in San Diego, and right towards
- 2:40Speaker 1: the end, Drew was finally texting me like, Hey, if
- 2:43Speaker 1: you're going to take this job, please do it because
- 2:45Speaker 1: he's wearing me out. Yeah, we're looking forward to the
- 2:47Speaker 1: start of the season. Obviously, certainly for Russell's standards and
- 2:52Speaker 1: the Broncos standards, it wasn't the type of year that
- 2:55Speaker 1: they wanted, and typically that's why new head coaches arrived.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Now we go to the number one overall pick in
- 3:07Speaker 1: this year's draft, which currently belongs to these Chicago Bears,
- 3:10Speaker 1: but for how much longer? Certainly Justin Fields, who wears
- 3:14Speaker 1: number one for the Bears, factors into that discussion. Are
- 3:18Speaker 1: they shopping the number one pick because they're satisfied with
- 3:20Speaker 1: Justin Fields? Or could Justin Fields be on the move?
- 3:25Speaker 1: Is that a possibility something that Ryan Poles was asked
- 3:28Speaker 1: today here at the combine. That's the plan right now,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and like I said, we're going to do our homework
- 3:33Speaker 1: on this class and if something changes, and again I'll
- 3:37Speaker 1: just use the same statement. We got to be blown
- 3:39Speaker 1: away to say, you know what, I think this is
- 3:41Speaker 1: best for organization. Nothing's changed there. I saw you know,
- 3:44Speaker 1: the the deal from yesterday. In terms of leaning one
- 3:49Speaker 1: way or the other, you know, I think that's always
- 3:51Speaker 1: been the case. We've always leaned that way because justinto
- 3:53Speaker 1: some really good things. I'm excited about where his game's
- 3:57Speaker 1: gonna go. But at the same time, when you sit
- 4:00Speaker 1: in our situation at one overall, you have to do
- 4:03Speaker 1: your due diligence. You have to in skate everything. You
- 4:05Speaker 1: got to spend time with those guys just to make
- 4:07Speaker 1: sure we're making the right decision. Ryan Poles, they're talking
- 4:14Speaker 1: about the many options that they have with the number
- 4:17Speaker 1: one pick. Ian Rappaport again here with me. What's your
- 4:20Speaker 1: understanding of the Bear's plan at number one right now? Well,
- 4:23Speaker 1: first of all, it's Ryan Poles is saying. Is true.
- 4:26Speaker 1: They wanted to do, and this really has been the
- 4:28Speaker 1: plan since the season ended, was evaluate all the quarterbacks,
- 4:31Speaker 1: get a landscape, how good are they, who do they like,
- 4:34Speaker 1: where do they stack up, get through the combine, and
- 4:37Speaker 1: then make a firm decision on justin Field. So what
- 4:39Speaker 1: he is saying is consistent with what has been the plan.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And you know, the question would then be like, well,
- 4:45Speaker 1: what do they need to know is in Justin Fields,
- 4:47Speaker 1: you're starting quarterback. Well, this is his job, This is
- 4:50Speaker 1: Ryan Poles's job is to figure out are they absolutely
- 4:53Speaker 1: sure is Fields graded higher than any of these quarterbacks
- 4:56Speaker 1: coming out. My guess is the answer is yes, said
- 4:59Speaker 1: Field stays, but they can't know that for sure until
- 5:01Speaker 1: they get through the process. If they assume justin Fields guy,
- 5:05Speaker 1: then it seems that trading the pick makes the most
- 5:09Speaker 1: sense because they're going to get the most for it.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I mean, this is how you build. You have the
- 5:13Speaker 1: number one pick and you don't need a quarterback, you
- 5:15Speaker 1: trade it for someone else, to someone else for a lot,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and use those picks to build the foundation. That seems
- 5:21Speaker 1: like the plan going forward for the Bears. Well. In
- 5:22Speaker 1: evaluating these quarterbacks though, also helps them understand the value
- 5:26Speaker 1: that they might get for number one. Like if they
- 5:29Speaker 1: feel like, all right, look, c J. Strout might be
- 5:31Speaker 1: a can't miss prospect, Bryce Young might be the best
- 5:33Speaker 1: we've seen in the last five years, and then they
- 5:36Speaker 1: can assess that value with other teams as they try
- 5:38Speaker 1: to help them move off. That's a great point, and
- 5:40Speaker 1: I think that's part of it, because you know, I
- 5:42Speaker 1: think we all think about, Okay, well, the Bears are
- 5:44Speaker 1: obviously going to trade. So going from nine to one
- 5:47Speaker 1: is worth X. Well, it's different every year based on
- 5:49Speaker 1: the talent you're trading for. You're not trading for abstract picks.
- 5:52Speaker 1: You're trading for talented players. So what is that? What
- 5:55Speaker 1: is it? Yeah, you know, two ones and two twos like, okay,
- 5:58Speaker 1: well that's a really good player. But can offer us
- 6:01Speaker 1: some help there too, All right, Daniel Jeremiah are a
- 6:05Speaker 1: Fill Network draft lead. You might have heard him the
- 6:07Speaker 1: LEA draft analyst Snifiler. Yeah, he did his you know,
- 6:09Speaker 1: hours long conference call on Friday and actually went into
- 6:12Speaker 1: all that the Bears could get for that number one
- 6:15Speaker 1: pick with all the different options. Certainly, so I think
- 6:18Speaker 1: that's a big part of it too, is the value
- 6:19Speaker 1: of the quarterbacks. But again, the number one pick is
- 6:21Speaker 1: worth what a team will give to you essentially at
- 6:24Speaker 1: the end of the day. Right now, we are going
- 6:27Speaker 1: to head back to Andrew Ciliano just about twenty yards away,
- 6:31Speaker 1: who's got a Super Bowl champion with him, who does
- 6:33Speaker 1: not have to worry about picking first overall. Thank you guys,
- 6:36Speaker 1: Andy Reid, you are picking thirty first overall. As the
- 6:39Speaker 1: draft comes to Kansas City, which is a great problem
- 6:42Speaker 1: to have because you want to think again, congratulations House
- 6:45Speaker 1: life as a two time Super Bowl champion. It's great. Yeah, no,
- 6:49Speaker 1: it's great. I'm so happy for our city to have
- 6:52Speaker 1: the opportunity to have the draft there for our organization.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Rat Veach, he's got a little pressure on now it's
- 6:58Speaker 1: back in you know, it's right here in Kansas City.
- 7:00Speaker 1: So but we look forward to it. Patrick said, I
- 7:03Speaker 1: believe on stage at the parade that he had made
- 7:07Speaker 1: a promise that when the draft was here, you guys
- 7:09Speaker 1: would be picking glass. So there. Yeah, well he's good
- 7:12Speaker 1: at those predictions. Have you had any time to breathe whatsoever?
- 7:16Speaker 1: Coaches that win and you've been down this road before
- 7:19Speaker 1: generally say that they're behind, like there's no vacation time,
- 7:22Speaker 1: there's no time to have any family time or any
- 7:24Speaker 1: chance to reflect. Yeah, well I did. I went to California,
- 7:29Speaker 1: but I where I've got a property out there and
- 7:32Speaker 1: my wife. My wife and I were able to get away. However,
- 7:36Speaker 1: my staff, I've got to put that back together, and
- 7:40Speaker 1: I lost a big component of that with Eric b Enemy.
- 7:43Speaker 1: So Eric went to Washington, as we know, as the
- 7:45Speaker 1: offensive coordinator. So I had to do my go through
- 7:49Speaker 1: the interview process. But it's a lot better doing that
- 7:51Speaker 1: when you're looking at the ocean than not. So I
- 7:55Speaker 1: was able to go out there and get busy. Since
- 7:59Speaker 1: you mentioned Eric, let's let's talk about him. You have
- 8:01Speaker 1: said multiple times how happy you are for him. We
- 8:04Speaker 1: had him on last week. I think everyone agrees it's
- 8:06Speaker 1: great that he gets his chance to run his own ship.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Is there any part of you though, that's angry that
- 8:14Speaker 1: he had to make that move, that his next step
- 8:17Speaker 1: wouldn't be sitting in a chair like yours, Well, listen,
- 8:19Speaker 1: I mean I was hoping that that he honestly would
- 8:23Speaker 1: be able to get a head coaching job from the
- 8:25Speaker 1: seat that he was sitting in. I'm not going to
- 8:27Speaker 1: tell you that so that I feel any different than that.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I don't know if angry is the right term. I
- 8:32Speaker 1: know how things work, but I am so happy for
- 8:36Speaker 1: him and he has a chance to work with a
- 8:38Speaker 1: good friend of mine, Ron Rivera. Ron's a tremendous human being,
- 8:41Speaker 1: a great football coach. He's a defensive coach, although he
- 8:44Speaker 1: knows both sides, but he's he mainly focuses on the defense,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and so this gives U. E. Be An opportunity to
- 8:52Speaker 1: sit there and have his own, his own show. This
- 8:54Speaker 1: is his name on it, and only his name, and
- 8:57Speaker 1: that's I think it's for all the time and effort
- 9:01Speaker 1: that he's put in. I think it's a great reward
- 9:03Speaker 1: there and I think it will be end us for Washington.
- 9:06Speaker 1: He will he brings great energy. I think the players
- 9:10Speaker 1: will feel that and if they just listened to him, man,
- 9:13Speaker 1: he'll get them, get them where they want to go
- 9:15Speaker 1: on the offensive side. And we definitely felt that energy
- 9:18Speaker 1: last week after his press conference when when he joined
- 9:20Speaker 1: us slide. Let's go back to Patrick Mahomes. Was there
- 9:22Speaker 1: ever a point now that everything is done, Was there
- 9:25Speaker 1: ever a point, whether it'd be against Jacksonville or in
- 9:28Speaker 1: the super Bowl, where you thought this is it, He's done,
- 9:32Speaker 1: He's not coming back. Listen, I never think that with
- 9:36Speaker 1: him because because of the way he's wired. Um and
- 9:39Speaker 1: so I know great athletes have a way of overcoming things.
- 9:45Speaker 1: My job is to make sure that they're not putting
- 9:47Speaker 1: themselves in more jeopardy than what they should be putting
- 9:50Speaker 1: themselves in a football field. So you know thus that
- 9:55Speaker 1: we did the X ray and make sure we took
- 9:56Speaker 1: care of that even though he fought me to all
- 9:58Speaker 1: the way the machine with it. But that part's important
- 10:02Speaker 1: for young coaches to make sure they do that art.
- 10:05Speaker 1: And he didn't want to get the x ray because
- 10:07Speaker 1: he didn't want to hear potentially badness. Well whatever, yeah whatever,
- 10:11Speaker 1: or go all the way up there to get it,
- 10:12Speaker 1: you know, so, and he didn't want to miss any place.
- 10:15Speaker 1: So but anyways, he um nothing amazing at me about
- 10:18Speaker 1: the kid. He loves playing the game. He's tough, obviously,
- 10:23Speaker 1: and he's very smart. I know a lot of the
- 10:26Speaker 1: Netflix show that we're going to see was him at home,
- 10:29Speaker 1: him with Brittany, him with the family, but some of
- 10:31Speaker 1: it was actually in your building during practice. What are
- 10:32Speaker 1: we going to learn anything about Patrick Mahomes that we
- 10:35Speaker 1: didn't already know? I think I think you'll learn, well,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I don't know if that would be it, but uh,
- 10:40Speaker 1: I think he'll learn that he's a great father, cares
- 10:44Speaker 1: about his wife and his children. Um. I think you'll
- 10:49Speaker 1: also see he's a great teammate on the field. And
- 10:53Speaker 1: this is during the grunt time, the practice time, when
- 10:56Speaker 1: which you know can be a challenge when you get
- 11:00Speaker 1: to week sixteen seventeen, you know so, But he's upbeat.
- 11:05Speaker 1: He wants to dominate every play, and he wants to
- 11:08Speaker 1: be great every play, and he tells the huddle that
- 11:10Speaker 1: all the time. So I think you'll see I think
- 11:12Speaker 1: you'll see his relationship with the coaches and and how
- 11:17Speaker 1: he interacts with them, and how proactive he is with
- 11:21Speaker 1: things and willing to try just about anything there on
- 11:25Speaker 1: the football field. Let's talk about your offseason roster possibilities here.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I know you and Brett Feach were just on the
- 11:30Speaker 1: podium arrassed not only about Orlando Brown but about Frank Clark.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Can you realistically see them both back with workable numbers? Yeah,
- 11:39Speaker 1: there's a possibility. I mean, we're so young into this
- 11:42Speaker 1: thing that I'm not sure we've declared anything, you know.
- 11:46Speaker 1: And Brett deals with all this. He relieves that off
- 11:50Speaker 1: of my table so or off of my play. I
- 11:53Speaker 1: don't have to worry too much about it. He takes
- 11:55Speaker 1: care of that for me. So but I tell you, nothing,
- 12:00Speaker 1: nothing surprises me. Nothing's impossible. And and if they both
- 12:06Speaker 1: ended up back with us, I could see that if
- 12:08Speaker 1: they ended up having to go, we had to end
- 12:10Speaker 1: up going a different direction, or they had to go
- 12:12Speaker 1: a different direction, we understand that, but most of all,
- 12:15Speaker 1: we appreciate the two guys, two great guys, two good teammates.
- 12:19Speaker 1: All right, last thing, the competition committee. Yesterday, the Rams
- 12:23Speaker 1: had a proposal where they would make roughing the passer reviewable.
- 12:28Speaker 1: You obviously remember Week five, the Chris Jones play Derek Carr,
- 12:31Speaker 1: remember that vividly you after the game said maybe there's
- 12:33Speaker 1: some kind of middle ground, some way to fix plays
- 12:37Speaker 1: like that. Would you be in support of making roughing
- 12:41Speaker 1: the passer reviewable? Well? Yeah, I mean I was just
- 12:43Speaker 1: in that the meeting, so I would, But I know
- 12:47Speaker 1: there's a lot that goes into that. So there's a
- 12:51Speaker 1: lot of different angles that go into it. So I
- 12:53Speaker 1: understand if you don't. I understand if you did. The
- 12:57Speaker 1: thing that won't be talked about. I don't think is
- 13:01Speaker 1: that the number of roughing the passer call in particular,
- 13:06Speaker 1: ones that as coaches, we thought were missed were depleted
- 13:11Speaker 1: the second right out after that play in the Atlanta play,
- 13:14Speaker 1: they they dissipated so that you weren't getting a lot
- 13:17Speaker 1: of those, and when you did get him, they were
- 13:19Speaker 1: very accurate what they were they were doing. So you
- 13:22Speaker 1: don't necessarily think it's it's something that's going to pass. Well,
- 13:25Speaker 1: I don't know that. I mean, I'm not here to
- 13:27Speaker 1: judge on that. There are a lot of voices that
- 13:29Speaker 1: go into that that are a lot bigger than what
- 13:31Speaker 1: I well, not physically bigger, bigger, bigger than I am.
- 13:34Speaker 1: So on that note, Andy Reid, congrats, I appreciate it.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Thank you for every you do a great job too,
- 13:40Speaker 1: Thank you, sir, appreciate it. Likewise, Andy Reid, two time
- 13:43Speaker 1: Super Bowl winning head coach, all right knew right now.
- 13:47Speaker 1: On NFL dot Com, Bucky Brooks, if you log onto
- 13:51Speaker 1: dot com, has his new mock draft, and he has
- 13:53Speaker 1: Jaylen Carter going one overall to the Bears again. The Bears,
- 13:57Speaker 1: as it stands still do hold the first overall tick.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And then Bucky has Bryce younga two, Will Anderson at three,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and then the hometown team here at Indy the Colts
- 14:06Speaker 1: taken c J. Strout at four. The drills begin on
- 14:09Speaker 1: Thursday on NFL Network hand on NFL Plus the d
- 14:12Speaker 1: linement of the linebackers coming up first, working towards the
- 14:14Speaker 1: old line of the running backs. On Sunday, if you're
- 14:22Speaker 1: watching NFL net work, a six hour extravagamza here out
- 14:26Speaker 1: of Tuesday, getting ready for the drills on Thursday at
- 14:29Speaker 1: the combine. What if the Atlanta Falcons do at quarterback?
- 14:32Speaker 1: They're picking eighth overall. Last year they had a rookie,
- 14:35Speaker 1: Desmond Ritter play the second part of the season, went
- 14:38Speaker 1: two and two as a starter. Terry font know your thoughts.
- 14:41Speaker 1: He's gonna add to the position. And we've been really
- 14:44Speaker 1: clear with how we feel about Desmond Ritter and what
- 14:48Speaker 1: he's done to this point in his career. He's his
- 14:52Speaker 1: makeup and just the way he's handled every role that
- 14:56Speaker 1: he's been in and what he did over the last
- 14:58Speaker 1: four games of the season. He dealt with adversity, he
- 15:01Speaker 1: got off the mat, he kept fighting. So Desmond's done
- 15:03Speaker 1: some good things and we know he's going to continue
- 15:07Speaker 1: to improve this offseason. And yet we're gonna add to
- 15:09Speaker 1: the position, whether it's free agency, the draft, or both.
- 15:15Speaker 1: We've talked about the quarterback position and how we want
- 15:17Speaker 1: to make sure we continue to add to that position
- 15:19Speaker 1: and we want to keep bringing players in. So really
- 15:23Speaker 1: excited about Desmond, and yet we're gonna add to the position.
- 15:27Speaker 1: All right, There is Terry Fontono, GM of the Falcon
- 15:29Speaker 1: Steve White, he kind of said the same thing when
- 15:31Speaker 1: he was sitting right here. The Falcons have a top
- 15:33Speaker 1: ten pick, is an interesting position to be in if
- 15:37Speaker 1: the quarterbacks fall or if somebody wants to get up
- 15:40Speaker 1: to your eighth position. You do Falcons preseason games in
- 15:45Speaker 1: the building overall where they mildly content with what Desmond
- 15:50Speaker 1: Ritter did. They knew it was going to be a
- 15:51Speaker 1: little bit. Yeah, I think they're more than mildly content.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I mean, remember, Marcus Mariot just started most of the season,
- 15:56Speaker 1: but Ritter came in, played well in the preseason, and
- 15:58Speaker 1: then he came in and did well at the back
- 16:00Speaker 1: end of the season. Until they're speaking in encouraging terms.
- 16:03Speaker 1: But to quote Fontino, they said, there's no way they're
- 16:05Speaker 1: going to anoint him as their QB one right now.
- 16:09Speaker 1: We've turned him. Said they're going to add to the
- 16:10Speaker 1: quarterback room, it would probably be a veteran type of quarterback.
- 16:14Speaker 1: They don't have a veteran quarterback on the roster right now. Now,
- 16:18Speaker 1: let's not forget there's a lot of speculation that the
- 16:21Speaker 1: Falcons may be in play to maybe get into little
- 16:24Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson trading sweepstakes. But seeing a Terry Fontano and
- 16:29Speaker 1: head coach Arthur Smith have put this team together, to
- 16:32Speaker 1: give up that type of capital to make a trade
- 16:35Speaker 1: for one player seems something way out of their playbook.
- 16:38Speaker 1: So again and listening to Fontano and talking to people
- 16:41Speaker 1: in the organization, it seems like if they add to
- 16:43Speaker 1: the quarterback room, it would be a veteran. Desmond Ritter
- 16:46Speaker 1: would have to earn that number one job. Right now,
- 16:49Speaker 1: it looks like they're very happy with his progress, and
- 16:52Speaker 1: if they do go for a veteran, they do have
- 16:53Speaker 1: some financial flexibility. After cutting Marcus Mariota this morning, they
- 16:57Speaker 1: now have north of sixty five million within m sixty
- 17:00Speaker 1: five million in available camp space. We have some breaking news.
- 17:03Speaker 1: The Browns and gem were just announced for the Hall
- 17:06Speaker 1: of Fame game. So Joe Thomas is going in derrel
- 17:09Speaker 1: Rievas Joe Cleco are going in August third. We have
- 17:13Speaker 1: a game one hundred and fifty six days from now
- 17:17Speaker 1: will be your next NFL game, and we might see
- 17:20Speaker 1: to Shawn Watson if Kevin Stefanski wants to play starters
- 17:24Speaker 1: that day. Andrew Barry their GM talked a little bit
- 17:26Speaker 1: about his contract in this offseason. Yeah, I mean, there's
- 17:29Speaker 1: a couple of things that he said that we're very interesting.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Without being specific, Andrew Berry rarely gets into specifics and
- 17:35Speaker 1: public's public announcement type of situations, but he did say
- 17:38Speaker 1: when asked about restructuring veteran players contracts because they have
- 17:42Speaker 1: to get under the salary cap. The quarterback to Shaun
- 17:46Speaker 1: Watson's fully guaranteed deal, it's a possible. It's a possibility
- 17:50Speaker 1: to be restructured, and that's one way that they can
- 17:53Speaker 1: get under the cap and add players if they redo
- 17:56Speaker 1: his deal in some way, shape or form. He wouldn't
- 17:59Speaker 1: commit to say he's there doing that this year, but
- 18:01Speaker 1: that is a possibility now. Privately, I asked Barry, is
- 18:06Speaker 1: it going to be simpler this season without a first
- 18:09Speaker 1: round draft pick to build your roster knowing that Watson
- 18:14Speaker 1: is going to be able to play Week one? He
- 18:17Speaker 1: said absolutely, because last year, because of the looming suspension,
- 18:22Speaker 1: they did not know what it was going to be
- 18:24Speaker 1: like to build a roster, not knowing how long Deshaun
- 18:27Speaker 1: Watson was going to be out who was going to
- 18:29Speaker 1: be the full time backup at the time. So this year,
- 18:33Speaker 1: because they have stability at that position, he said, it
- 18:35Speaker 1: will be easier to shape a roster around watson skills
- 18:39Speaker 1: than it was this time last year when they made
- 18:41Speaker 1: the big move for him. And that big move included
- 18:43Speaker 1: the twelfth overall pick, which would have been the Browns
- 18:46Speaker 1: but now is in Houston. Nisario has two and twelve.
- 18:49Speaker 1: The Browns first selection is the twelfth pick in the
- 18:52Speaker 1: second round, which this year, at least this year is
- 18:54Speaker 1: forty two overall. Thank you, Steve White. Meantime, rhet, we
- 18:58Speaker 1: have some other quarterback news at a Tennessee today, Yeah,
- 19:01Speaker 1: we do, in fact, and I think there was a
- 19:04Speaker 1: lot of question as to whether twenty twenty three in
- 19:06Speaker 1: Tennessee would bring about the Malik Willis era right third
- 19:11Speaker 1: round pick last year out of Liberty for the Titans
- 19:13Speaker 1: Sudan as Ryan Tannehill missed the final five games of
- 19:17Speaker 1: the season in twenty twenty two with the ankle injury.
- 19:20Speaker 1: But it doesn't sound like that is the case, or
- 19:22Speaker 1: at least, as Ran Carthon, the new GM of the Titans,
- 19:25Speaker 1: said today at the combine, Ryan is under contract. You know,
- 19:29Speaker 1: I know you guys, I just want to speak freely
- 19:31Speaker 1: for a moment, you know, I know everybody wants to
- 19:34Speaker 1: make a big deal, you know, out of the quarterback
- 19:36Speaker 1: position and whether he will or won't be here. But
- 19:39Speaker 1: you guys just have to accept the fact that Ryan
- 19:41Speaker 1: is under contract, you know, for us, and right now
- 19:44Speaker 1: he's a Titan and he will be a Titan. It
- 19:48Speaker 1: seems like a like as much of it as an
- 19:50Speaker 1: endorsement as you would get at this point in the
- 19:53Speaker 1: off season from any general managers. Mike Giardi is back
- 19:56Speaker 1: here with us listening to what Ran Carthon had to
- 19:58Speaker 1: say about the quarterback spot. Ryan Tannehill is a Titan
- 20:01Speaker 1: and will be a Titan, and I guess until he's
- 20:03Speaker 1: not and has been working out in the area, has
- 20:05Speaker 1: been getting together with the guys. I think it's interesting
- 20:08Speaker 1: that when you look at his number, his cap number,
- 20:11Speaker 1: and everybody's obsessed with the cap it's fairly low for
- 20:14Speaker 1: starting quarterbacks now that aren't on rookie contracts. So it's
- 20:17Speaker 1: all right when you talk about the idea of moving
- 20:19Speaker 1: on from Ryan Tanhill, where you mentioned Malik willis just
- 20:23Speaker 1: not ready yet, right and there's gonna have to be
- 20:24Speaker 1: a big step from him from your one to year two.
- 20:27Speaker 1: To be that guy. They had to turn to Joshua
- 20:29Speaker 1: Dobbs a journeyman to sort of pilot them through the
- 20:32Speaker 1: back part of the season and almost get him into
- 20:34Speaker 1: the postseason. So I think you're looking at Willis as
- 20:37Speaker 1: a project that is far away. Well, in the short term,
- 20:40Speaker 1: Ryan's a leader when he's healthy, He's been a good
- 20:43Speaker 1: player for them, His teammates respect him. It just makes
- 20:46Speaker 1: a lot of sense to just continue with that relationship
- 20:49Speaker 1: rather than move on and then I'll have to find
- 20:51Speaker 1: yourself another veteran quarterback who is going to cost some
- 20:53Speaker 1: money because the price is only going off for those guys. Yeah,
- 20:56Speaker 1: I mean it's a good point. And when Ryan's healthy
- 20:58Speaker 1: and when you know they run the offensive way, they
- 21:00Speaker 1: want to pretty difficult to deal with. Oh, when Derrick
- 21:02Speaker 1: Henry is out there, you healthy as well. So we'll
- 21:04Speaker 1: see if that continues into twenty twenty three. We know
- 21:07Speaker 1: someone who will not continue into twenty three in their
- 21:10Speaker 1: previous role now is Leslie Fraser's defensive coordinator for the
- 21:13Speaker 1: Bills stepping away from coaching as they announced today. Does
- 21:19Speaker 1: it sound like Sean mcdermot's going to have a bigger
- 21:21Speaker 1: impact than maybe he even did before Leslie was there.
- 21:25Speaker 1: So they're noncommittal as he said this, the conversations with
- 21:28Speaker 1: Leslie just happened last week, so they're the beginning stages
- 21:30Speaker 1: of trying to figure out how they want to operate
- 21:32Speaker 1: going forward. But obviously Sean McDermott made his bones as
- 21:36Speaker 1: a defensive coordinated in this league before becoming the head
- 21:38Speaker 1: coach for the Buffalo Bills, and it is something that
- 21:41Speaker 1: he said, if I feel comfortable, I feel like that's
- 21:43Speaker 1: the best thing for the team to do going forward,
- 21:45Speaker 1: then then I'll do that. Leslie only taking a year off,
- 21:49Speaker 1: unclear about whether or not he returns and has his
- 21:51Speaker 1: old job back. They haven't really gotten that far either.
- 21:54Speaker 1: But it was interesting to hear Ron Rivera, who coached
- 21:57Speaker 1: with McDermott and Caroline, and he said, very aggressive play caller.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And I think if you talk to some people in Buffalo,
- 22:02Speaker 1: they'd like a little bit more aggression from the defense.
- 22:05Speaker 1: And that's Sean's pedigree, at least it was in Carolina.
- 22:08Speaker 1: That's how he sort of made his reputation. So curious
- 22:11Speaker 1: to see how that works. But again, beginning processes for them,
- 22:14Speaker 1: and McDermot said, I do want to still have the
- 22:16Speaker 1: big picture in mind, because as we know that difficult
- 22:18Speaker 1: job that they have as a head coach managing all fats.
- 22:21Speaker 1: It's of every part of the game. Yeah, And as
- 22:23Speaker 1: Brandon Bean was sitting right there when he joined us
- 22:25Speaker 1: here live on NFL Now just a couple of hours ago,
- 22:27Speaker 1: he said, continuity is what they want on defense. This
- 22:29Speaker 1: is a good defense and it has been for the
- 22:31Speaker 1: last few years. They want to keep that as much
- 22:33Speaker 1: as they can. So, yeah, certainly wouldn't shock me to
- 22:35Speaker 1: see maybe an elevation from the staff. Al Holcomb comes
- 22:38Speaker 1: in as you mentioned, and then Sean takes on a
- 22:40Speaker 1: bigger role as the head coach and perhaps to facto
- 22:42Speaker 1: defensive and coordinator. So we'll see there in Buffalo. All right,
- 22:50Speaker 1: back here with you NFL Now at the Combine live
- 22:53Speaker 1: from Indianapolis here as the Giants with some really big
- 22:56Speaker 1: decisions to make as Daniel Jones and Saquon bar Fleet
- 22:59Speaker 1: both set to become free agents March fifteenth. Sa Quan
- 23:02Speaker 1: just played out his fifth year option. Daniel Jones head
- 23:05Speaker 1: is declined. So how do the Giants bring back not
- 23:09Speaker 1: just one but both, something General manager Joe Shane talked
- 23:12Speaker 1: a bit about today. If then scenarios we're going through though, so, um,
- 23:18Speaker 1: if it gets out of hand and it's it's it's
- 23:20Speaker 1: out of our comfort zone. UM. You know we have
- 23:23Speaker 1: the tag we have we probably tag one player. UM,
- 23:26Speaker 1: we'll use that and if somebody's got to walk then
- 23:29Speaker 1: you know, it's it's unfortunate, but that's a part of
- 23:32Speaker 1: the business. And we're still build building a team, and
- 23:34Speaker 1: you know that's important to keep in mind. I would
- 23:35Speaker 1: love to have them both back. Yeah, I think, Uh,
- 23:38Speaker 1: they were They work well with each other. Uh, you know,
- 23:40Speaker 1: their entire careers in the NFL, they've been together. Um.
- 23:43Speaker 1: I do think they again they compliment it, Joe well
- 23:45Speaker 1: and where we're trying to We've had again productive conversations
- 23:48Speaker 1: with both the representatives and you know again that the
- 23:51Speaker 1: goal is to hopefully get something done. So Jones and
- 23:56Speaker 1: Barkley just two, I mean and important too, but two
- 24:00Speaker 1: of a long list of notable free agents. Here's the
- 24:03Speaker 1: Giants have here, as we sent out on our the
- 24:05Speaker 1: NFL Game Day Twitter account. There includes Darius Slayton, Sterling Shepherd,
- 24:10Speaker 1: who've been key pieces of the wide receiver corps these
- 24:13Speaker 1: last few years, and some more on the defensive side
- 24:16Speaker 1: of the ball as well, including safety Julian Love, who's
- 24:19Speaker 1: played well these last couple of years, right, Lewis and
- 24:21Speaker 1: Judy Batista back here with you inside the Indianapolis Convention
- 24:24Speaker 1: Center here, and you know Judy as as we look
- 24:28Speaker 1: at what Joe Shane just said, like, yeah, I'd love
- 24:30Speaker 1: to have both those guys back. But how I think
- 24:32Speaker 1: is obviously the biggest question. So the answer is very
- 24:36Speaker 1: carefully yes. First of all, the first priority is certainly
- 24:40Speaker 1: Daniel Jones, and what happens there will affect what happens
- 24:43Speaker 1: with sa Quon Barkley. They are working with Daniel Jones.
- 24:47Speaker 1: They have another meeting schedules for today. They said they've
- 24:49Speaker 1: been in constant communication. I talked to a member of
- 24:52Speaker 1: the organization last night who said they are cautiously optimistic
- 24:56Speaker 1: that they're going to get this done, a deal with
- 24:58Speaker 1: Daniel Jones. They said, we went through this with Eli
- 25:00Speaker 1: Manning too, and ultimately, of course Eli spent his entire
- 25:03Speaker 1: career in New York. Yeah, so there is optimism that
- 25:06Speaker 1: they will get a deal done with Daniel Jones, but
- 25:08Speaker 1: make no mistake, he will be franchise tag. If they
- 25:10Speaker 1: cannot get a deal done, Obviously, they would prefer to
- 25:13Speaker 1: get the deal done, because they'd like to have that
- 25:15Speaker 1: franchise tech in their back pocket if they need it
- 25:17Speaker 1: for Saquon Barkley, they would like him back to But
- 25:20Speaker 1: you've sort of heard Joe Shane say, well, if we
- 25:22Speaker 1: need to use the franchise tech on Daniel Jones, then
- 25:24Speaker 1: somebody has to walk. Well, that somebody would be sa
- 25:27Speaker 1: Quon if they can't get a deal done with him
- 25:29Speaker 1: and they have to use the tech on Daniel Jones.
- 25:31Speaker 1: So certainly the hope, and again there's cautious optimism in
- 25:35Speaker 1: the Jets organization, is that they can get both of
- 25:37Speaker 1: them done. And then of course, you know across the street,
- 25:41Speaker 1: if you ever road with the New York Jets down
- 25:43Speaker 1: the road, there are quarterback questions there, but a bit differently,
- 25:47Speaker 1: right the Giants trying to figure out how to bring
- 25:49Speaker 1: Daniel Jones back. The Jets trying to figure out what
- 25:51Speaker 1: really to do and whom they will turn to at
- 25:55Speaker 1: quarterback this year, with Zach Wilson obviously struggling last year,
- 25:59Speaker 1: and Joe Douglas, their general manager, talking a bit about
- 26:02Speaker 1: that today. Obviously, you guys have seen reports about us
- 26:08Speaker 1: bringing Derek Carr in about a week and a half ago.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I can tell you that was a fantastic visit. We
- 26:14Speaker 1: really enjoyed spending time with him. Obviously, he's the only
- 26:18Speaker 1: quarterback I can really shed any light on for you guys,
- 26:21Speaker 1: since he's the only quarterback that's that's a free agent.
- 26:25Speaker 1: But I can say that he left, he left a
- 26:28Speaker 1: strong impression with everybody, and so and so the Jets
- 26:34Speaker 1: who met with Derek Carr in New York a little
- 26:37Speaker 1: while ago, and now we'll meet with him in Indianapolis
- 26:40Speaker 1: for his second time, as well as Saints. As you
- 26:42Speaker 1: saw there, Judy, what do you make of this potential
- 26:46Speaker 1: connection at quarterback with Derek Carr in the Jets. Well,
- 26:49Speaker 1: first of all, Joe Douglas could not have raved any
- 26:52Speaker 1: more about Derek Carr, not just as a player and competitor,
- 26:54Speaker 1: but as a person. He went on at length about
- 26:57Speaker 1: how how strong an impression Derek Carr had made during
- 27:01Speaker 1: their meeting. They loved him. But let's be on as they,
- 27:05Speaker 1: like pretty much everybody else in the NFL, is waiting
- 27:08Speaker 1: for the decision coming out of Green Bay from Aaron
- 27:11Speaker 1: Rodgers about what he wants to do and what the
- 27:13Speaker 1: Packers want to do about him, and all the dominoes
- 27:16Speaker 1: are going to fall from there. Joe Douglas obviously could
- 27:19Speaker 1: not discuss that. He was asked a number of different
- 27:22Speaker 1: times if you talked to the Green Bay Packers just
- 27:25Speaker 1: in generalities, and he said, well, I talked to a
- 27:26Speaker 1: lot of gms at this time of the area. Wouldn't
- 27:28Speaker 1: say yes or no. But certainly the assumption is he has.
- 27:31Speaker 1: But they're waiting, right, I mean, Aaron Rodgers decision is
- 27:34Speaker 1: the thing that is going to set the entire right.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I mean, the whole quarterback market is waiting for it.
- 27:41Speaker 1: So but they love Derek Carr, and certainly the sense
- 27:45Speaker 1: you get from them is that if Aaron Rodgers is
- 27:47Speaker 1: out of the picture, that Derek Carr would be their target.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Be an interesting marriage certainly there with that group and
- 27:54Speaker 1: with Derek Carr in the work that he has already
- 27:56Speaker 1: put out there on his resume in his productive NFL career.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Judi Batista there with the latest for New York's teams.
- 28:03Speaker 1: They're the Giants and the Jet NFL Now is a
