- 0:00Speaker 1: Ok Now, we know that we have spoken a lot
- 0:02Speaker 1: over recent days and weeks about the cost of living,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and particularly here in the Northern Territory where we know
- 0:08Speaker 1: that food fuel, everything's on the rise, there's no doubt
- 0:12Speaker 1: about that.
- 0:13Speaker 2: And female charity Share the Dignity.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It aims to change the lives of women and girls
- 0:17Speaker 1: facing homelessness, domestic violence, or just doing it tough by
- 0:22Speaker 1: dispersing sanitary products to help with period poverty, a necessity
- 0:27Speaker 1: for women. But when times are tough, finding that extra
- 0:29Speaker 1: money for items like that can be really hard. Now
- 0:34Speaker 1: Share the Dignity along with a number of great women
- 0:38Speaker 1: within the community putting on a special event to help
- 0:41Speaker 1: raise money locally. And here to tell us a little
- 0:43Speaker 1: bit more about it is Tara.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Good morning to you.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Tara, good morning Patty.
- 0:49Speaker 2: How are you not too bad?
- 0:50Speaker 1: Tara, tell us a little bit more firstly about Share
- 0:53Speaker 1: the Dignity and what Share the Dignity does.
- 0:56Speaker 3: So Share the Dignity are an amazing charity that I'm
- 0:59Speaker 3: super lucky to be a part of in the Northern
- 1:01Speaker 3: Territory and we were working on period poverty. So a
- 1:06Speaker 3: huge part of being a woman is obviously having to
- 1:08Speaker 3: deal with your monthly, your time of your month, and
- 1:11Speaker 3: with the class of living increasing and just getting ridiculously expensive,
- 1:15Speaker 3: most women are having not most a lot women are
- 1:17Speaker 3: having to go without the basic essential needs that they
- 1:21Speaker 3: need to deal with their menstrual cycle. So share the
- 1:24Speaker 3: dignity is around so that no woman should have to
- 1:26Speaker 3: have the dignity of misdignity, I should say, of having
- 1:29Speaker 3: to use you know, rolled up toilet paper or stocks
- 1:32Speaker 3: to deal with that time of the month.
- 1:34Speaker 1: It's unbelievable, isn't it when you think of it that
- 1:37Speaker 1: in a country like Australia that you know that's some
- 1:41Speaker 1: of these products like their bloody expensive.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It's it's hard for people.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Oh absolutely, So we share the dignity. Recently completed the
- 1:49Speaker 3: biggest ever period survey in the world and what we
- 1:54Speaker 3: found was that forty percent of our participants had to
- 1:57Speaker 3: adapt how they were dealing with their time of months
- 2:00Speaker 3: because they literally could not afford it. And there's an
- 2:02Speaker 3: excess of three million dollars three million people in this
- 2:05Speaker 3: world that live below the poverty line. So it's a
- 2:07Speaker 3: real thing that that's happening to women every single day
- 2:10Speaker 3: in our communities, and it's just not Okay.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So Tara, tell me what is coming up to try
- 2:16Speaker 1: and really help in this space for women in the
- 2:18Speaker 1: Northern Territory.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Wow. So Kate Warden, our wonderful MLA has been really
- 2:23Speaker 3: instrumental in gathering the most amazing bunch of women to
- 2:28Speaker 3: facilitate the dress exchange. So recently Share the Dignity launched
- 2:32Speaker 3: address for Dignity, which is about sustainable fashion. And you know,
- 2:36Speaker 3: we've all got clothes in our closets that we'd love,
- 2:39Speaker 3: we've worn once, but you know, for some reason women
- 2:41Speaker 3: can't rewear addresses to lots of events, right, So it's
- 2:45Speaker 3: fashion with purpose. So Kate's come up with an amazing
- 2:48Speaker 3: idea for a dress exchange that just in time for
- 2:51Speaker 3: the race season, ahead of those dricees and events and
- 2:54Speaker 3: all thoughts of that. So a dress exchange where women
- 2:58Speaker 3: of the territory can come and donate these dresses, either
- 3:01Speaker 3: donate or register for twenty dollars where you can then
- 3:04Speaker 3: get some exchange dollars so that you can then purchase
- 3:08Speaker 3: from the other donated dresses that have come in. So
- 3:11Speaker 3: it's a really amazing initiative and all the funds from
- 3:15Speaker 3: the exchange are going towards share the dignity and at
- 3:18Speaker 3: the end, all the dresses that remain left over, if
- 3:20Speaker 3: there's any, will be uploaded to our Dress for Dignity
- 3:22Speaker 3: portal as well. So it's just a full cycle of
- 3:26Speaker 3: purpose purposeful fashion.
- 3:27Speaker 1: It's amazing, I reckon it's a great idea because so
- 3:30Speaker 1: often we do spend you know, for those of us
- 3:32Speaker 1: who are in a situation where you know, where we've
- 3:35Speaker 1: got that regular income, we spend money on clothes that
- 3:38Speaker 1: you know, then you think to yourself, oh goodness, may
- 3:40Speaker 1: what am I going to do with this dress afterwards?
- 3:42Speaker 1: And you don't want to, You don't want to waste it.
- 3:44Speaker 1: You want to if you're able to, then donate this
- 3:47Speaker 1: so charity. I think that's a fantastic thing to do.
- 3:50Speaker 3: And so many women like I know, I've got a
- 3:52Speaker 3: big weekend of functions coming up, and I'm like, when
- 3:53Speaker 3: did I wear that dress last? Who was there with
- 3:55Speaker 3: the same people? You know, We've got such dresses. It's
- 3:59Speaker 3: an amazing place the events that if you are one
- 4:01Speaker 3: of those person that likes to wear a new dress
- 4:03Speaker 3: for it, this is an amazing opportunity to get new
- 4:05Speaker 3: clothes for you and not contribute to the landfall of
- 4:08Speaker 3: sar sassions.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Amazing, Tara, where can people find out a little bit
- 4:12Speaker 1: more information about this particularly you know there's women out
- 4:15Speaker 1: there listening now who are thinking, I'd really love to donate,
- 4:19Speaker 1: you know, to donate some of my really nice dresses
- 4:23Speaker 1: and see it go to this cause.
- 4:28Speaker 3: So we can. Kate's office at North Lakes is a
- 4:31Speaker 3: drop off point from the twentieth to the twenty third
- 4:34Speaker 3: of June between office hours. The actual exchange will be
- 4:39Speaker 3: occurring on the twenty fifth of June, so for that
- 4:41Speaker 3: full day, the morning part will be for the flop part,
- 4:44Speaker 3: and then we're opening it up in the afternoon for
- 4:46Speaker 3: people to come along and purchase if they wish. So
- 4:50Speaker 3: huge thanks to Kate for opening up their office there,
- 4:52Speaker 3: and also Tony, the manager of North Aks is offered
- 4:54Speaker 3: that entire big space right near Kate's office for us
- 4:57Speaker 3: to contribute to this one. So Northlakes Warden's office and
- 5:01Speaker 3: one of the amazing ladies behind the front desk will
- 5:03Speaker 3: be able to help between twentieth and twenty thirty.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Judy, Tara, I reckon there's going to be lots of
- 5:07Speaker 1: ladies out there listening this morning, thinking I can either
- 5:10Speaker 1: make a donation or I'd love to come and check
- 5:12Speaker 1: out the clothes that are going to be there when
- 5:14Speaker 1: this does happen, So we might try to catch up
- 5:16Speaker 1: with you again a little bit closer to the date
- 5:20Speaker 1: because we know that this is for such a good cause,
- 5:23Speaker 1: Share the Dignity. The work that Share the Dignity does
- 5:26Speaker 1: here in the Northern Territory is fantastic, wonderful.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Thanks so much, Katie, Thank you, Tara.
- 5:31Speaker 2: We really appreciate you having a chat with us this morning. Awesome,
- 5:34Speaker 2: thanks so much, thank you.
- 5:36Speaker 1: And like she, like Tara had just said, if you
- 5:38Speaker 1: do want to jump on Facebook, you will be able
- 5:40Speaker 1: to do a bit of a search as well and
- 5:43Speaker 1: find some detail on there. I did share it actually
- 5:45Speaker 1: on my Katie Wolf media page two because I think
- 5:48Speaker 1: it's a great a great thing for us to get
- 5:51Speaker 1: involved in. So if you want to jump on there,
- 5:53Speaker 1: you'll be able to find that flyer and see when
- 5:56Speaker 1: it's happening and how you might be able to get involved.
