Transcript
- 0:01Hi, and welcome to the Seated podcast with Furniture Row.
- 0:04I'm Jessa, creative director and design extraordinaire.
- 0:08And I'm Barb, interior designer and buyer.
- 0:13Well, welcome back everyone to Seated with Furniture Row.
- 0:19This is actually our first time. I know we're reunited and it
- 0:23feels so good. It does.
- 0:24We're here for Season 2 on our Season 2 set that you designed
- 0:29and I love it. And you know, we've had a lot of
- 0:32guests and that's been nice. But it's it's, I miss just
- 0:36talking to you, just hanging out and talking about.
- 0:39Lots to talk about. Today we do because we're going
- 0:43to talk about how to buy furniture, which sounds like a
- 0:46really simple question, but the problem is that.
- 0:51Is it a problem? Well, it's just people feel
- 0:54overwhelmed because they get analysis paralysis.
- 0:59There's so many things to consider.
- 1:02They don't know where to start. Moving into a new space is
- 1:06already such an anxiety inducing situation.
- 1:11Or even if you're currently in a space and you just need
- 1:14something new, there's literally a trillion options out there you
- 1:19can choose from. There's so many for.
- 1:20Furniture and it's just hard to know where to start.
- 1:23So today we're going to kind of just like break it down step by
- 1:29step, kind of just like here are just let's get your head in the
- 1:32right place to be able to make a more informed decision so you
- 1:36don't just like freak out and panic order something less
- 1:41quality than that doesn't last. You ever panicked Order?
- 1:46Oh yeah, I don't know about with furniture, but I definitely
- 1:51ordered fashion. Me too, But how did that work
- 1:54for you, Jess? You know, sometimes things are
- 1:57like they don't fit right or they just, or you.
- 2:01And sometimes they do. Yeah, sometimes, yeah, Yeah.
- 2:03But either way, I wasn't planning on the purchase.
- 2:07And then sometimes then now you have this credit card bill to
- 2:10pay and you're like, oh, and so and then you.
- 2:13Have to send things back and that's not fun.
- 2:16It's not. You go friendly all the time or
- 2:19like, yeah, with jeans it's like I'm going to order 10 'cause I
- 2:22just don't know which ones are going to fit me, you know?
- 2:25And I get so much anxiety. I know jeans are.
- 2:29Such a difficult one. Yeah.
- 2:31Yeah, jeans are, jeans are difficult.
- 2:36So yeah, I mean, let's, I think it's a good way to start by just
- 2:42reintroducing you and how you're going to be really helpful in
- 2:46this conversation, particularly because, yes, you are an
- 2:50interior designer, which is great, but you're also a buyer
- 2:54for Furniture Row. And I'd like to just talk about
- 2:57what that means and why your insights are really going to be
- 3:01helpful here. Yeah, it's just, it is good to
- 3:06know you know what you're getting into.
- 3:09You know, when you go to a store, you're looking online,
- 3:13you want to have the confidence or you want when you're
- 3:16shopping, you want to know that where you're buying from that
- 3:19your decision. You can confidently make a
- 3:22decision that you're going to buy something that is of good
- 3:26quality, durable, you know, and at a good price point of value.
- 3:32And so as a buyer, those are the things we think about is like
- 3:35what's best for our customer, what is it that they're looking
- 3:39for? How can we bring that to our
- 3:43stores for our customers at a good value?
- 3:47So. Yeah.
- 3:48And you really care about the end result and how somebody's
- 3:53going to live with this product. So I'm.
- 3:58Yeah. Just going to ask you a lot of
- 4:00good questions that will help people kind of know what to look
- 4:04for. I think, I do think it is
- 4:07important, you know, as a buyer to keep that in mind because
- 4:11what you're buying, whatever category you're buying, it's
- 4:14kind of like your name is on it. Even though it's Furniture Row,
- 4:17it's like you really stand behind what you've purchased as
- 4:21well. And our buyers are furniture
- 4:23buyers that go into factories and look up products, books that
- 4:27that they're making and having having built.
- 4:31If they see something that they don't like coming down the line
- 4:35and it's not being built to their standards, they'll tell
- 4:39them you need to do it this way. Yeah.
- 4:41And so, you know, they have very high standards for our product.
- 4:44Yeah. And when I've like shadowed you
- 4:47guys ever at markets or whatever, that's always fun.
- 4:50Yeah, I know it is. It's a great time, but that
- 4:53feedback like whoever's making the furniture really takes that
- 4:58into account, like it actually it really matters to them, so.
- 5:02Yeah, they listen to him. Yeah.
- 5:03So that is really helpful, I think.
- 5:08And I think the first thing that people need to consider too
- 5:11though is it's about you and your home and your space.
- 5:16So everything we're going to talk about today is a little bit
- 5:19subjective, but we're going to like ask you the right questions
- 5:26to help determine what's going to be right for you.
- 5:30Yeah, because everybody's needs and wants and budgets are
- 5:35different. That's very true.
- 5:36And spaces, yeah. So the first thing when you're
- 5:40buying furniture to consider is what is your lifestyle?
- 5:44You know, do you have pets? Do you have kids?
- 5:50What kind of space do you live in?
- 5:52Do you have like a bunch of square footage that you're
- 5:55trying to fill? Or are did you just move into a
- 5:58small little bungalow? You know, are you frequently
- 6:04watching, you know, shows or movies at night?
- 6:09Are you spending a lot of time on your couch reading or
- 6:13crafting? Do you need space to do craft
- 6:19activities or play games? What is it your lifestyle so
- 6:23that you have some sort of direction when you're going into
- 6:26a store? Exactly Like, do you always eat
- 6:29dinner at the dining table? When you do, do you like it to
- 6:33feel more cozy? Or, you know, do you want to sit
- 6:37at your sofa sometimes and have dinner?
- 6:40These are all do. You ever sit on your sofa?
- 6:42Yes, it's my favorite thing. That's why I love eating dinner
- 6:44out of bowls so much. Just like you make a bowl, it's
- 6:48so much. It's easier to eat on my sofa.
- 6:50It's like the coziest thing ever for me.
- 6:52That's true because if you're eating off of a plate on your
- 6:56sofa, it could just like, rope off.
- 6:58Really good flatware. Performance fabrics come in just
- 7:02handy. Flatware is an ideal if you
- 7:04don't have some sort of like lift top coffee table or tray or
- 7:08something. Or at that point, most of the
- 7:10time I just sit at the dining room table and it's like, OK,
- 7:13this is like it requires a knife.
- 7:15It's a dining table meal, typically.
- 7:18That makes sense. But yeah, like, these are all
- 7:20great things to think about because say you do really love
- 7:23to eat dinner in your living room.
- 7:26It's your favorite place to eat dinner.
- 7:28Then let's think about your coffee table and like making
- 7:31that coffee table a priority for you, whether it's the size, you
- 7:37know, like two to four people can fit around this coffee table
- 7:42and eat or just do just. 1. Or just you, Yeah.
- 7:46Or, you know, maybe you don't want to sit around the coffee
- 7:50table. I mean, if you were, you would
- 7:51probably get some floor pillows I would say.
- 7:54You can, or just whatever is comfortable.
- 7:57It's all about your home is your castle.
- 8:01So you make it how you want it. Yeah.
- 8:02What is your best life look like?
- 8:05And then maybe you want to sit on your sofa and eat dinner,
- 8:09then get like a lift top coffee table that comes up to you where
- 8:13the top of it actually comes up. And yeah, the lift tops are
- 8:17great for that, and some of those even have storage in it so
- 8:22you can put your extra napkins or whatever in.
- 8:24There. Yeah, you can make that like
- 8:26instead of a banquette like. It's just we keep our silverware
- 8:32in the coffee table for an. Extra is always eating at the
- 8:36coffee. Table.
- 8:37Love it. I love it.
- 8:38The coziest thing ever. So we can't.
- 8:42Have this conversation without mentioning the dining table.
- 8:46So those that do like to sit at a dining table.
- 8:50We love dining tables. I'm all you know, I've said this
- 8:53a couple times already, this year is all about home.
- 8:57It's all about the dining room, you know, and being able to sit
- 9:01at a beautiful table and eat a sandwich, you know?
- 9:05So I'm all for bringing the dining table back.
- 9:08Well, that's me. To some people, romanticizing
- 9:11their life looks like sitting at the dining table and eating on
- 9:15their China. You know, And other people
- 9:17romanticizing their life means sitting on a floor floor pillow.
- 9:21With their China floor people. I'm a floor person anyway.
- 9:25You sit on the floor pillow with their with your China and eat at
- 9:30the coffee table. So romantic.
- 9:32Whatever you really want. Exactly.
- 9:34And then yeah, like do you like to entertain?
- 9:37Are you going to need space at that table for more people or
- 9:41like an extendable table or in the living room, are you going
- 9:45to need extra seating beyond you for when you have people over
- 9:50and these are are your? Guests messy Yeah are your.
- 9:53Guests messy? Are you messy?
- 9:55You know, do you need like storage space so you know
- 9:57quickly just where to put things so things don't get out of
- 10:00control during the week and then you have to do a full cleanup at
- 10:04on the weekend, every weekend, you know, so.
- 10:07All of those things are, yeah, they really help you make a
- 10:11decision. Exactly.
- 10:13And like a lot of people, they're curious about when they
- 10:18start looking at the living room.
- 10:21Should I get a sectional or a sofa and a love seat?
- 10:24And I think. That's a good.
- 10:25Question that goes back to layout, which we'll get into,
- 10:29but also your lifestyle and, you know, are the people that are
- 10:36going to come over, do you want them to be more spaced out or do
- 10:40you want them to sit all in the same place?
- 10:42You know, do you want some separation or do you want to be
- 10:46really cozy on a sectional? And these are all just like
- 10:49questions like I, I love having a Shea lounge because then
- 10:52that's like more lounge space in a smaller area on this.
- 10:58Are great too, if it's like floating out in the center of
- 11:01the room and you've had the Shea's Lounge, you have a lot of
- 11:03people over, you can sit on all different sides of that.
- 11:06So there's, you know, plenty of seating.
- 11:08Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah, You could have like a sofa
- 11:12and a love seat and a Shea lounge, you know, or just like a
- 11:15sofa that has a Shea lounge. But these are all things.
- 11:20And then modular makes it easy to.
- 11:23If you change your mind, if you change.
- 11:25Your mind, you can start with a sectional and be like, you know
- 11:28what? I didn't like that and move it
- 11:30into. The world's largest sofa.
- 11:32Yeah. Or like I want a bed in the
- 11:36middle of my living room and I want to have a movie night and
- 11:39just totally lounge. Or like some other days, I want
- 11:42to have like a nice like sitting room where there's like, it's a
- 11:46little bit more formal, like we're going to have some tea,
- 11:49you know, and, and chat and I want it like a love seat and a
- 11:52sofa. Or, you know, maybe you are a
- 11:55big movie family and you want to like be in the experience.
- 12:00Be in the immersive, that's a big one right now is the
- 12:03immersive sofas and, yeah, motion furniture with sound in
- 12:10it and vibrations. You're watching Top Gun and you
- 12:14can feel the airplane, you know, flying past.
- 12:18It's like you're really in the movie.
- 12:20And then you don't have to invest in like a surround sound
- 12:23setup because like that just. Sound speakers built in.
- 12:26A lot of them do. I'm not technical enough to know
- 12:28where to start there and I don't have time to research it 'cause
- 12:32they just don't want to. But the the surround sound built
- 12:36into my living, I'm not at that stage in my life.
- 12:38I'm not going to build in surround sound into my living
- 12:41room. Let's just buy one thing, be
- 12:43over it. Yeah.
- 12:44Bluetooth in and there you go. Yeah, great movie night.
- 12:47Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
- 12:50So then, yeah. I mean, I think once you kind of
- 12:52have your lifestyle, like think you've thought about like what
- 12:56are my priorities? Think about style, you know,
- 13:02Yeah. And start.
- 13:03Start with the What style do you like and will that work in the
- 13:08home that you're living in? Yeah, exactly.
- 13:11I think it it depends for sure on the space that you've chosen,
- 13:17because some spaces lend to a style more than others.
- 13:22And for me, my style is always pretty consistent, but it
- 13:27changes slightly based on where I'm living.
- 13:30Like right now I'm leaning a little bit more cottage because
- 13:35my house is cottagey. So I have like more stripes or
- 13:41Buffalo checks even in places because to me that's like, I
- 13:44mean, Buffalo checks aren't always caught at gingham is more
- 13:47cottagey. But anyway, it's like you can
- 13:52lean into the style a little bit more.
- 13:55But I think a good place to start if you don't know where to
- 13:59or how to define your style and what you're really looking for
- 14:02is just start perusing like Pinterest and, and, and
- 14:08Instagram and TikTok in places where you can find really good
- 14:13interior design examples and save things that you like
- 14:18without judgment or thought. You know, just save what speaks
- 14:23to you. And then at the end, you just
- 14:26kind of look back what you've saved and you'll find some
- 14:30common threads, you know, like I'm noticing that I really like
- 14:34bold colors or a pop of bold colors.
- 14:37They I really like a more Moody look.
- 14:39Or, you know, I this I'm feeling like I really like cozy and
- 14:44cottagey. And so you can collect collected
- 14:48looks. Yeah.
- 14:48Or I want just like really clean.
- 14:51Like I want my home to just be like a blank canvas, kind of
- 14:56just Oasis where there's not any clutter, you know?
- 14:59Or I like the no clutter look, but I want it to be Moody.
- 15:03Like there's so many directions you can go, but I think once you
- 15:07identify what you're kind of liking, it makes it a little bit
- 15:11easier to know what you're looking for 'cause if you just
- 15:14start looking at a furniture catalog, like so many different
- 15:17things can look good to you, But like, is it going to fit within
- 15:20the aesthetic that makes you feel best?
- 15:23Right. And is it going to work in your
- 15:25home? Yeah, exactly that your space
- 15:28that you've created. So I think that is really
- 15:33helpful. I think then having some
- 15:35reference photos just on your phone or available to you as
- 15:40you're shopping to remind you, it can help you stay on track.
- 15:44Or if you go into a store, it can help you to say like, hey,
- 15:48like I love this look, can you help me?
- 15:52Show me. Something that's similar.
- 15:53To this? Yeah, exactly.
- 15:56And you know what else? This is something we did years
- 15:58ago. Well, and I guess we still do
- 16:00it. But yeah, particularly I did a
- 16:02project once where somebody showed me their inspiration
- 16:05photo and they're like, we want it to look like this.
- 16:10I'm like OK, But then they the picture they showed me was not a
- 16:15motion sofa, but they wanted a motion sofa in this room and the
- 16:20room itself was was very like florally and cottagey.
- 16:24So I took their inspiration photo and made it work with the
- 16:29motion sofa that they had. You can do anything.
- 16:32You can do anything. So if it's the surroundings that
- 16:35that you like, then figure out the best way to make that room
- 16:40feel like your inspo picture. But find the sofa or the dining
- 16:45table or bedroom, whatever it is that you're looking for that
- 16:49really speaks to you and yeah, and that you're looking for and
- 16:52meets your needs and wants. When that brings up another and
- 16:56budget, right, but that brings up another good point of like
- 16:59it's helpful to start with the big pieces 1st and then kind of
- 17:03go around them as far as accessories, like in watercolor
- 17:10classes that I took in art school, one of the biggest
- 17:13things I kept getting tripped up on was I was always focusing on
- 17:16the little details like meticulously throughout the
- 17:20whole painting. And then like things would get
- 17:24disproportionate because I was focusing in on this one little
- 17:29area when really I needed to see the big picture 1st and then get
- 17:33into the details. So I think it with interior
- 17:36design too, or just like styling any space, whether or not you're
- 17:41an interior designer, you should start with the big brush strokes
- 17:46and layout kind of just the framework and then get into the
- 17:50details. So don't be like, I don't think
- 17:53you should necessarily be like, I need this lamp in this room
- 17:57and the room has to go around the lamp.
- 17:59You know, I feel like that. Happens though, I mean,
- 18:02sometimes there is one thing that you're like, let's build it
- 18:06around this. Right.
- 18:07And so and so maybe, but then it's like one thing that you're
- 18:11building it around, you're not like buying all the accessories
- 18:14and then buying the big piece of furniture.
- 18:17If you're starting, and I'm saying when you're starting with
- 18:20a blank canvas, it can be helpful to start with like.
- 18:23The bigger piece, the. Bigger piece and be like, OK, we
- 18:26know we want reclining because it is what our family needs for
- 18:31all these different reasons or wants, but we want it to look
- 18:35modern, you know, and I think it can take the stress off by just
- 18:39starting there and then decorating around it and and
- 18:42just making sure that piece fits within the style that you like.
- 18:45Still though, like I want a recliner, but I want cottage or
- 18:49I know like I want a bed that has an upholstered headboard
- 18:53because that just feels more cozy to me, you know, and that
- 18:57can transition to any different style that you like.
- 19:01But yeah, I think it's just a good place to start.
- 19:04Yeah, I would agree. Yeah.
- 19:07So then I think once you've kind of decided on your style, you
- 19:12want to establish your budget and priorities.
- 19:15So like your priorities, I, I always say in life, budgeting is
- 19:23priorities. It is prioritization.
- 19:26Like that's what it is. You have to figure out what's
- 19:29more most important to you in life and in your lifestyle,
- 19:35because most times you can't have everything at once.
- 19:39You can have everything, you just can't have everything at
- 19:41once. So you have to figure out what
- 19:42you need first. Or what you want first.
- 19:45What you want first? Yeah.
- 19:46Yeah. And budget is also, you know,
- 19:50subjective. It is very subjective and.
- 19:52You know, because sometimes we're like, well, I don't want
- 19:55to spend more than this, or this is all I'm going to spend on
- 19:59this. Sofa or this dining table, but
- 20:03then you'll spend more on something completely different.
- 20:05So it's like what, what is the true budget?
- 20:10You know, and, and there is financing and things that will
- 20:13help if you need to spend more. Are you going to pay cash or you
- 20:17know, it's it's all of those things.
- 20:19So you have to figure out what's going to work for you and your
- 20:23pocketbook. Exactly.
- 20:25And I think there are some people or wallet, yeah, who just
- 20:31people they are like I want to pay cash that's really important
- 20:35to me and not finance anything. That's just where I'm at and
- 20:39that's great. And so it's like then find the
- 20:42best quality you can within that specific price point.
- 20:46But the financing thing that you bring up there are it.
- 20:49Opens a whole world. It does open a whole.
- 20:51World and you can. Still be conscious about it, you
- 20:55know, And so I think, you know, there are a lot of places that
- 20:59offer 0% financing if you have good credit and or decent
- 21:06credit. And then you can kind of just be
- 21:10getting this furniture and not paying interest on it while you
- 21:14pay monthly is what that means. I know it's like jargon that we
- 21:17kind of just block out. But yeah, so for me, it would be
- 21:22more worth it to get a quality piece that I can keep for a long
- 21:28time and finance it and pay it off in a couple years rather
- 21:34than getting something that I'm going to have to replace in a
- 21:38couple years and I'm never fully satisfied with.
- 21:40Yeah. So yeah, it's just everybody's
- 21:45different that way though. And so I think you just kind of
- 21:47have to define like what's most important to you.
- 21:51If it's like I only have this much, I want to pay cash and
- 21:56like I'm renting right now, so it doesn't need to be like a
- 21:59forever piece, then that's great to know, you know, like I'm
- 22:03willing to sacrifice quality a little right now as long as it's
- 22:06just like it works well for my space, for, you know, the time
- 22:11that I need it. It's right for right now.
- 22:13It's right for right now and that's great too.
- 22:17But I, but I do think like that's how price points are all
- 22:20over the board is based on what is important to people.
- 22:24Like if they're shopping for a dorm room, they're not going to
- 22:26be looking for an heirloom piece that you can pass down to your
- 22:29grandkids, you know most often. Depends on which dorm room, but
- 22:35yeah. That is very true, but again,
- 22:37that's like. Have you seen some of the
- 22:39designs that they're doing in dorm rooms now?
- 22:41I mean, they look like the cutest little sweet hotel.
- 22:45I think that it's, I feel shameful because of what my dorm
- 22:53room looked like. And I'm like, I, you know, I
- 22:58just don't need to see that. No, it's really interesting.
- 23:02So if you all ever want to Google it, there's just some
- 23:04beautiful and honestly, I think we started this when I was in
- 23:08design school because all the interior designers, our rooms
- 23:12were always beautiful. Oh, I bet like we figured out
- 23:14how. The rooms I would ignore, I'd
- 23:16walk past and be like, that doesn't exist, yeah.
- 23:19But now it's a thing. Yeah, yeah, I bet it is.
- 23:23And I think that you can probably do it for pretty cheap
- 23:26if you're being crafty. And.
- 23:28Resourceful. But yeah, I mean, again, it's
- 23:32about priorities. So in people's homes, once
- 23:37you've kind of defined your budget, it's like, where do you
- 23:40start? And I think the essential pieces
- 23:43are most important. So you want to start with like
- 23:47where am I going to sleep? You know, like so I need to.
- 23:51Start with a good. Mattress start with a good
- 23:53mattress 100% because you're going to sleep on that every
- 23:56night and it's going to affect how your day goes absolutely how
- 23:59your life goes really so. And a good pillow.
- 24:02I'm big on pillows. Good mattress, good pillows and
- 24:05that doesn't have to be like create like a 3000 plus dollar
- 24:09mattress necessarily. I think that you can get a
- 24:12pretty affordable 1. You should just be making sure
- 24:16that we were getting it from does their R&D, you know they do
- 24:21their research and development and they make.
- 24:24Go to a trusted, very trusted company.
- 24:28Yeah, I I would. And you know, in your bedroom
- 24:34where you sleep, I mean bed frames, I think that's something
- 24:38that you could potentially save on as long as it's stable
- 24:43because it's just behind your. Are you talking about the frame
- 24:47or the actual bed? The bed.
- 24:49The bed. Like, yeah.
- 24:51So like with the bed, I would go with solid wood.
- 24:54OK. That's what I would do.
- 24:56Yeah. Because then you're going to
- 24:58have that. If you take care of it, you'll
- 25:01have that for a long time. Yeah.
- 25:03Yeah. But what if you're renting and
- 25:05you're like, I need this to last for like 2 years and then I'm
- 25:09going to move? Well, you know, you're asking a
- 25:14designer because I would buy the bed that I love and it would go
- 25:18with me when I moved. But so everybody has a different
- 25:22way of making those decisions. I've.
- 25:25Had a really heavy sofa for a long time and I move a lot and
- 25:30you know people, they do school to pick it up when they're
- 25:33helping me move because I'm not moving, I'm physically incapable
- 25:37of moving that so I hire movers or friends and they they do
- 25:42struggle picking it up, but is it like a it makes?
- 25:45It There it is. Yeah, there's.
- 25:48Oh boy. I'm a high maintenance person to
- 25:53move sometimes because of that sofa, but the point is that it
- 25:57makes it to its destination and it's made a lot of moves and I
- 26:00still have it. And you love.
- 26:02It right? Well, not anymore.
- 26:04Not anymore. It's it's been like 10 plus
- 26:06years, but it lasted that long. You know, yeah.
- 26:09Through moves. So yeah, you could get something
- 26:12nicer, but I think, you know the other thing to think about.
- 26:16So yeah, maybe that's really important.
- 26:18Your sleep space is your sanctuary.
- 26:21And again, that's kind of subjective.
- 26:22Like for you, you're like, I need my bed to look nice for me
- 26:27to walk into my like special room and feel like I live a
- 26:33quality life. Yeah, my, I love my bed.
- 26:36I'm not even going to tell you how long I've had it.
- 26:38But yeah, if, if I were to move, it would come with me.
- 26:41Yeah, for sure. I wouldn't be replacing it, you
- 26:43know, with something else, right.
- 26:45So the house, you know, wherever I would move, it would need to
- 26:49accommodate my bed. Yeah, the size of the room.
- 26:52Right. And see, that exposes priorities
- 26:55again for me like another besides my mattress in a
- 26:59bedroom, another really important priority would be my
- 27:03dresser because I'm going to use that every single day.
- 27:07It keeps my clothes, which are important to me.
- 27:10And I want the drawers to be easy to open and I want there to
- 27:15be enough space and easy to find things.
- 27:17So I'm not just like shoving stuff in a drawer and like it's
- 27:20like piled and things don't stay quite full because I'm just
- 27:24trying to jam so much in there. Well, and I'll tell you like if
- 27:28that is an important to you because some people have a
- 27:31closet with built in shelves and drawers.
- 27:34Not everybody has that. So a dresser, either, you know,
- 27:38the typical long dresser or the tall, right, It's important to
- 27:42look for things like dovetail in the drawers.
- 27:48And the glides need to be just right because yeah, the, I think
- 27:53ball bearing glides, those need to be on your or in your dresser
- 27:59and in the drawers because you're going to be opening those
- 28:01up all the time. So you want to make sure that's
- 28:05the case. You either want it to be English
- 28:07or French dovetail. Yeah, what's the difference
- 28:11between English and French dovetail?
- 28:13Well, they're both excellent, you know, because they are very
- 28:17stable and you're opening your drawers all the time, so you
- 28:20don't want it to fall apart. So look for that.
- 28:22And the difference is like on an English dovetail, it's like this
- 28:27is like connected on the. You can see it on the side when
- 28:30you open it up, you can see that little.
- 28:32Yeah, it kind of looks like little squares fitting into each
- 28:35other. I don't know if that's a great
- 28:37way to describe it. Maybe we can show a picture.
- 28:39And then the French is just like it's cut out and it slides into
- 28:44it. So it's very, very, very stable.
- 28:46Stable for. That and some dressers even have
- 28:51velvet lined drawers which can be good for like if you're
- 28:55keeping anything that you don't want to get scratched in there,
- 28:58like in a top drawer with if you're going to put watches in
- 29:01there or something. Yeah, that's always good.
- 29:03But also also, you know, you want the inside of the drawers
- 29:07to be finished really nice. And the best way to do that is
- 29:11take your hand and feel around because you're putting your
- 29:16clothes in there and some things are finer than others, so you
- 29:18don't want it to snag. So that's a really important
- 29:21chunk on your. Nice leggings or.
- 29:23Whatever. Yeah, Or like where it snags it
- 29:26because it's not finished well on the inside.
- 29:29I got this dresser once off Facebook Marketplace because I
- 29:34was like, wow, you can get this really good wood dresser for
- 29:38this price. Opening the drawers was like so
- 29:42hard, you know, And it was just so hard to open them and close
- 29:46them. And I was like, I'm not doing
- 29:48this. I'm not like working with early
- 29:521900s technology today or any day, every day.
- 29:56I don't want to do that. So I just had to sell it.
- 29:59And it looks great. But the function is really
- 30:02important for things that you're going to use every day.
- 30:04And like, yeah, I have a big closet, but I also need space
- 30:08for like, it's all hanging space.
- 30:10So I needed folding the places to put jeans and things like
- 30:14that. Yeah, I think we've all had
- 30:17stories like that where we've bought a piece that we're using
- 30:21and it just does not function how it should.
- 30:24And I kind of have a story. It's the difference of Facebook.
- 30:27This is many years ago. I got sucked in because it was
- 30:31more about the style and you know, boy, they marketed it to
- 30:36me and I look line and sinker. I bought this beautiful Bombay
- 30:42chest that I was using in my bedroom and I was going to put
- 30:45clothes in it. You could use it in an insurance
- 30:47hall. You can use it in a living room,
- 30:48wherever, but I was going to use it in my bedroom and it had a
- 30:53detachable marble top. And I was all excited to finally
- 30:56get this piece. And I paid way too much for it.
- 30:59But at the time I was like, oh, this is a really nice piece.
- 31:03They delivered it. It was not from here.
- 31:06It was from a completely different place.
- 31:08And I went to put my clothes in it and the inside drawers
- 31:13weren't finished. And so I called them and they're
- 31:17like, well, that's how it is. And I'm like, this is going to
- 31:20ruin my clothes. So they did not want to refinish
- 31:23the inside the drawers, but they did.
- 31:25They came back out and took it. But I've learned my lesson.
- 31:29Just because it cost more or it's from a fancy schmancy store
- 31:34absolutely does not mean it's a better quality.
- 31:38I mean, some of the a lot of what we have a what we have is
- 31:43very good quality here. So don't let all the hype.
- 31:47Sometimes it's just. Marketing.
- 31:49Yeah, Well, this one it it got me.
- 31:52Yeah, when we will get into quality a little too.
- 31:55But I just want to wrap up this, you know, qualifier of like
- 32:01where can you, where should you spend and where should you save?
- 32:05And I think spend on the places that you are going to use most
- 32:10often and that you need first a lot of the time because that's
- 32:15what you're going to use most often.
- 32:17Know what what the quality is that you're spending the money
- 32:20on because you you don't have to spend a lot of money for good
- 32:25quality. It really comes down to where
- 32:28you're buying. You know, if you're buying it
- 32:30from a reputable place and Furniture Row is very reputable.
- 32:34We stand behind our products. Right, because of the buying
- 32:38team and their standards for quality.
- 32:41Very. High standards but yeah so if
- 32:43you're going to be like we eat dinner together every night at
- 32:46our dining table, that's one of the things that you need to
- 32:49spend on then because you want it to be like a nice experience
- 32:53everyday and fit your family and like maybe have a leaf in it so
- 32:56it can expand. And when I say spend like, yeah,
- 33:00it doesn't need to be a crazy amount, but it's like it's
- 33:03something that you should put thought into.
- 33:05Spend time on finding what's right for you and prioritize
- 33:11first. Or you know, I sit at my sofa
- 33:15and my coffee table every day and it's like my most creative
- 33:20place. So I really need to make sure
- 33:21that that is set up or I sit at my desk for so many hours.
- 33:26I need to make sure I have a nice chair, that kind of thing.
- 33:29So that's where you should spend versus save is just thing.
- 33:33Think about where you're going to spend the most time and and
- 33:36what you're going to spend the most time using on a daily
- 33:38basis. And that's where you should
- 33:40spend time finding the right. Just want the quality.
- 33:43And the quality and make sure it's quality.
- 33:45So how do people? Well, I think before we get into
- 33:51how people determine quality, we should figure out like we should
- 33:56make sure they know to measure their space and.
- 34:00Probably the biggest thing. And consider their layout, yeah,
- 34:03because first you, before you get into the details like we
- 34:07were saying with watercolor, you got to look at the big picture.
- 34:11Don't spend a ton of time researching like, well, what
- 34:14material is this when you don't even know if it fits your space?
- 34:17So yeah, you got to think about what is your floor plan look
- 34:24like? What is your footprint in your
- 34:26house? How big?
- 34:27You're living in. Just draw that out.
- 34:29You don't have to be a designer to do that.
- 34:32Just take simple measurements. Draw in where your windows are,
- 34:37your openings like doorways or openings into that room.
- 34:42And if there's anything like a fireplace in there, draw that on
- 34:45it so you know exactly where everything is.
- 34:49So when you go to the store, or you can work with the A-Team
- 34:54there and they can help you lay out that space right and they
- 34:59can come up with ideas that you may never thought of right on
- 35:03your own. And having the visual can be
- 35:05really helpful, just like in your mind.
- 35:09So when you're saying drawing it up, like you could just
- 35:12literally take a pad of paper and a pencil or a pen and just
- 35:15like draw like here is my square living room and this is where
- 35:20the window is. And I measured it and it's 10
- 35:23by, you know, 10 or whatever feet.
- 35:26And. Measure like if you have, you
- 35:30know, series of windows, like how much wall spaces on each
- 35:34side of the window, what's your door openings, all of those
- 35:38things. And it doesn't have to be, you
- 35:40know, I would always, I would put all of those measurements on
- 35:45there so that when you do go into the store, you have it and
- 35:48there's no guesswork. Right.
- 35:50And you can think like ideally, where would I want to put a sofa
- 35:54in this room? Yeah.
- 35:56And sometimes it can be difficult and kind of having an
- 36:01idea like maybe there is like I think I mentioned before, but my
- 36:05grandparents needed to figure out where to put their that.
- 36:09TV. Stand and they were like I just
- 36:14like do we put it in front of the window that feels weird and
- 36:17I'm like I think you could put it in this corner and it could
- 36:20just like kind of just cover the corner and then there could be a
- 36:23TV on top of it but. Had they thought of that in the
- 36:26corner? No.
- 36:27So I think they're like, would that look weird?
- 36:30And so kind of like thinking through that and drawing it up
- 36:33or taking a picture of your space and you could put it in
- 36:36ChatGPT and be like, what would we?
- 36:38Love the chat? Yeah.
- 36:39What would a TV stand look like in the corner of this room
- 36:46between these two windows? And it'll show you.
- 36:48And so I like graph paper, yeah. That helps 'cause each of the
- 36:54little squares. Yeah, graph paper is good and
- 36:56it's really easy to get. So it's just, yeah, drawing out
- 37:02like here's my measurements. It helps you visualize.
- 37:05It helps if you're going into a store to remember instead of
- 37:08just having something on a notes app.
- 37:10And then having pictures of your space with you and your shopping
- 37:14really helps too, because you can be like, wait, would that
- 37:17color really go in our space with what we already have or?
- 37:22I wouldn't get caught up. I understand the color thing,
- 37:24but you can always paint and that's so true.
- 37:28But if you don't want to, then I guess you have to take that into
- 37:31consideration. And so, yeah, just knowing what
- 37:34space you have to work with this big doorway entry, like we
- 37:38talked about sofa versus sectional.
- 37:41Especially if you're going in a basement, you have got to know,
- 37:45and I speak from experience of not being able to get sofa down
- 37:51a stairwell well and had to select something else.
- 37:54Should have measured that. I should know better than that.
- 37:56Yeah, but you just get so excited.
- 37:58It's not like people are, you know, lacking intelligence in
- 38:03some way. It's just that you get so
- 38:05excited about a certain piece and you just think, forget about
- 38:08the reality of the situation sometimes.
- 38:12And so you. Can't always like take a window
- 38:14out to get what you want through.
- 38:15It I know. And so before you get like just
- 38:19smitten by something and you need it, just know what you're
- 38:22working with, know your space. So take those measurements and
- 38:27then compare the doorway or the, you know, downstairs opening to
- 38:32the basement measurements so you know you can measure each piece.
- 38:38Make sure you can get it. Down there and make sure you can
- 38:40get it down there so. And the ceiling height the.
- 38:44Ceiling height is a. Big one, especially going into a
- 38:47basement or, you know, something like that, or in an upstairs
- 38:50area where you don't have a loft, you know, looking over
- 38:54into the rest of the house. Yeah.
- 38:56So you definitely want to measure your ceiling height.
- 38:59Yeah. Well, and I think like you're
- 39:01saying, the scale really matters.
- 39:05So you want to make sure with scale that it doesn't look
- 39:10weird, like a big piece in a small space.
- 39:14Yeah, I've seen that a lot. And yeah, that definitely if you
- 39:20get the wrong scale. Yeah, furniture.
- 39:23Like a piece just looks dwarfed in this giant room.
- 39:26And maybe you need something more substantial because the
- 39:31ceilings are so high, the room's so big.
- 39:33Like you need a chunky sectional or, you know, you have a really
- 39:38small space and that chunky sectional is going to take up
- 39:40every square inch and you're not going to be able to move around
- 39:42it. So that's the other thing is
- 39:45just kind of figuring out like if I put something this size in
- 39:48this room, can I move around it, you know, and.
- 39:52But I want to say this though, and I've seen that a lot where
- 39:55I've gone into homes before and they have a big giant sectional
- 39:59and it eats up the whole space, but they love it, you know, So
- 40:04it's their priority. It's their priority.
- 40:07And so, you know, we're trying to give advice on what, you
- 40:10know, when you're first looking for something.
- 40:12But if you already have it and you love it, that's what really
- 40:15matters. And if you're if, if we are
- 40:19giving you an idea of, hey, think about this before you buy
- 40:23it. And they're like, Nope, that's
- 40:24what I want. It's going to take up the whole
- 40:26room. It is what it is and it's their
- 40:28home. And that's what.
- 40:29They want to live, you know, in we're going to design around it.
- 40:34Absolutely. It's all about your home is is
- 40:39where where it's at and you want to be comfortable in there.
- 40:42Yeah, I have a friend who has a king bed and a small bedroom and
- 40:46she can't even fully close her closet door but she doesn't care
- 40:50'cause her priority is the king bed and it doesn't look silly
- 40:54unless you try to close the closet door, so it's just.
- 40:57You have to go across the bed to get into the closet.
- 41:02And you know what, everybody has like a different way of living
- 41:05and you can even kind of mark out spaces.
- 41:07Like if you are thinking about a new piece and you're like, will
- 41:10it fit in the space? Like I've, I've taken
- 41:13measurements, but how far is it going to go out?
- 41:15You can kind of just take painters tape and put it on the
- 41:18ground. Like, OK, here's 4 feet deep.
- 41:20That's what that looks like. Here's, you know, 3 feet deep.
- 41:24That's the coffee table. Here's what that looks like next
- 41:26to the four feet deep sofa. And here's how much walking
- 41:29space I have. Here's 90 inches long.
- 41:32You know, that's what that looks like.
- 41:33And so painters tape can really help people painter stakes.
- 41:37Great everything really, even hanging pictures.
- 41:41I use it all the time. Oh yeah, to mark out where
- 41:43they're going to go. Yeah, especially when they have
- 41:45those two little hooks on the back.
- 41:47I'll just take my tape and go across, put it on the wall with
- 41:50a level and put my 2 hooks in and then hang it.
- 41:54It's so. Easy.
- 41:55And then you don't have to. Hopefully that little tip is
- 41:57helpful. Yeah, I think it should be a
- 41:58home essential that people have as painters tape because it can
- 42:01just really help in a bind, but it doesn't.
- 42:05The point is that it doesn't stick super well.
- 42:07So yeah, I don't use it as like tape tape most the time.
- 42:13So yeah, now I feel like we can kind of get into quality and
- 42:18materials and like what you know what, what that, that's just
- 42:25such a big question. What are we looking for in every
- 42:29room as far as quality and materials?
- 42:31Well, in it, again, it depends on what you're using it for, who
- 42:36all's going to be using it. You know, some people are
- 42:39willing to like, say, a sofa. They may not care, you know, if
- 42:45it's a, a performance fabric. Yeah, they're like, I'm never
- 42:50going to use this room. I just want it for looks.
- 42:53We might sit on it occasionally. You know, that's a different
- 42:56story than, you know, a family of of four or, you know, a house
- 43:03full of pets. You know they have different
- 43:06needs. Yeah, let's break down like,
- 43:11yeah, if you, if you have a performance fabric, does that
- 43:14mean that it's just like it's a really good value, but it's it's
- 43:18not going to be like as high quality as something else.
- 43:21Is it easy to clean? Well, a performance fabric would
- 43:25be easier to clean and the durability I know with a lot of
- 43:29our sofas, you know, let's say for example, I I should know the
- 43:34name of the sofa, but the fabric that's on is a polyester which
- 43:38is cleanable and it might have well it would have at least a
- 43:4150,000 rub test. So that means this little
- 43:44machine is going back and going over and back that counts as one
- 43:50OK 50,000 times before it breaks or gets destroyed.
- 43:56So. We're just kind of knowing what
- 43:58your needs are. Like I need something that can I
- 44:02know that this is exists and I know that I have kids and I need
- 44:07something that's going to last through whatever they do to it,
- 44:10you know, like that is cleanable.
- 44:13Well, nothing is or indestructible.
- 44:18OK, so you do need to take care of if you want things to last
- 44:22long, then you need to take care of them.
- 44:24I mean, it's like having a high end car versus one that's, you
- 44:28know, the cheapest car you can find.
- 44:31You can destroy a very nice expensive car and and keep your
- 44:38inexpensive car very nice too. So it just it, you just need to
- 44:44take care. You got to take care of your
- 44:46furniture. That's such a good point.
- 44:48Like whether it's expensive or not, I think the care is going
- 44:51to determine how long it lasts to as long as I mean, we just
- 44:56want to get into maybe like what should people avoid, I think?
- 45:01And for the living room, like what I I think you want to make
- 45:06sure that whatever you're buying has a decent frame that the that
- 45:14the edges are reinforced. You were.
- 45:16Saying we're talking sofas. Sofas, yeah, yeah.
- 45:18So you could have, you know, a nice wood frame for your sofa
- 45:24and then just make sure that your stress points have wood
- 45:30there so that it it holds up because you're going to be
- 45:33sitting sometimes, you know, some people do sit on the
- 45:36corners of their sofa or on the arm.
- 45:38So you just want to make sure those stress points are
- 45:41reinforced. Right, exactly.
- 45:43So and that's kind of what determines quality of the piece.
- 45:48And I think also what is underneath the sofa because
- 45:54obviously for the most part you're sitting on the sofa and
- 46:00that the cushions are what's going to bear the most weight.
- 46:03So like how is your weight supported?
- 46:06So there's like a few different things that are common in sofas.
- 46:13I think it's like webbing. The sinuous frame.
- 46:17Yeah, exactly. So I would definitely look for
- 46:21the sinuous spraying springs or the webbing.
- 46:25The webbing is is a lot of times Italian people refer to as
- 46:29Pirelli, but that's really a brand.
- 46:32But our our frames have the sinuous springs in them.
- 46:37Most of our product does. Right.
- 46:39And then some really specialized sofas even have bars.
- 46:43I think it's like flex steel particularly, and that's their
- 46:47thing. Yeah, nobody else has that or if
- 46:50they do, it's not flex steel's. Bad.
- 46:54Yeah, yeah. But what you're trying to stay
- 46:57away from is like cardboard or something on the bottom.
- 47:02Well, yeah, I mean, and there are a lot of sofas and this
- 47:05happens when you're buying from from just anywhere you find.
- 47:11You can just aggregator. Yeah, it may look pretty, has a
- 47:16beautiful looking fabric and then you get it home and you're
- 47:18like, this is junk because it's not made well and it's it
- 47:23doesn't have the reinforced stress points or it doesn't have
- 47:27foam that wraps around the outside of the sofa.
- 47:32So you have to, really. Think about where you're sitting
- 47:37and then on the outside it's like.
- 47:39Yeah, you can like literally like feel that and it's hollow
- 47:44on the side or in the back, or you can feel the frame.
- 47:48Around it, the frame is too jutting out well and you don't
- 47:52want to sit on your sofa and have it collapse under you, you
- 47:55know, No, it's just I think we can all agree on that.
- 47:59You want it to, to support you both physically and like to look
- 48:07great. So a lot of people Speaking of
- 48:11sofas, they don't know whether they want fabric or leather.
- 48:16And I'm totally there. Like I want a new sofa and I
- 48:20don't know if I want fabric or leather and.
- 48:23What it what's the question, though for you?
- 48:25Like how do you not like? How come?
- 48:29How come? Leather like.
- 48:30Is it the other? Yeah.
- 48:32Like is it going to be as comfortable as fabric?
- 48:35That's my number one question. And then I think, you know, am I
- 48:38going to scratch up lap lather leather?
- 48:41Yeah. Am I going to scratch it up?
- 48:44Is it going to be more easily damaged, that kind of thing
- 48:48versus fabric? And like, I think it would be
- 48:50good to talk through this because people probably have a
- 48:53lot of the same, a lot of people have the same question.
- 48:58I think leather versus fabric is just a personal choice.
- 49:02Like what one do you like better?
- 49:05You know, I personally love a fabric sofa.
- 49:09I think it's I like how it feels soft and leather feels soft too.
- 49:13But for me I I like fabric and maybe an accent chair in
- 49:18leather. So it really does come down to
- 49:22personal preference of what you like.
- 49:24What are the different types of leather that are out there that
- 49:28I should look for? Because I don't know anything
- 49:30about what I should look for in leather.
- 49:33So what I would tell you is go for a top grain leather and do
- 49:37not buy a leather sofa that has split hide on it.
- 49:44We do not do that. So our leather sofas, they're
- 49:47all top grain in stationary. OK, and I'll explain the
- 49:51difference. But we do leather all or top
- 49:55grain leather all the way around the sofa.
- 49:57It's on all parts of the sofa. A lot of other places will say
- 50:02it's all leather and it is, but they use split hide.
- 50:05So the top grain is at the top of the hide, right and the split
- 50:10is underneath that. So it's in between the next
- 50:14layer, so they will put the splits on the side and on the
- 50:18back. We don't do that.
- 50:20So we're really offering an amazing value for a top grain
- 50:25leather sofa. Yeah.
- 50:27That's great. Or another thing that you'll
- 50:31see, and this is what you have kind of buyer beware, is a
- 50:35leather sofa that then uses PU or vinyl.
- 50:38Now that's that's fine on a motion piece because it's moving
- 50:43constantly back and forth, moving all the time.
- 50:46So those will have leather everywhere except on the side
- 50:51and the back. That's that's pretty typical.
- 50:54But on stationary you want it to be top green leather all the way
- 50:57around. OK.
- 50:58OK. Some of the motion pieces that
- 51:01you were talking about, it's like a vinyl on the sides, OK.
- 51:06And then? We call it PU, but it's like a
- 51:08vinyl. OK.
- 51:10OK. And then so what's the
- 51:13difference between like a leather, like is leather going
- 51:17to scratch? Should I be worried about that?
- 51:20It depends on what kind of leather that you're talking
- 51:23about. Top grain leather, you can get
- 51:25that in a corrected leather or an uncorrected leather.
- 51:28So a corrected leather is going to be a more consistent color
- 51:35all the way around. It's all going to look the same.
- 51:38It's for people that do not want to see scratches.
- 51:43They don't want to see, you know, like in a full grain
- 51:47leather the cow has, you know, is living its best life rubbing
- 51:52up against the fence, getting barbed wire marks on it, you
- 51:56know, whatever they are doing out there.
- 51:57But that is very different than a corrected leather.
- 52:02So you don't want to see all of that and the inherent beauty of
- 52:07the hide, then go with a corrected leather.
- 52:10OK. And then that is a little bit,
- 52:13it'll get less patinaed overtime maybe or like it'll show less
- 52:18scratches maybe. On the corrected.
- 52:20Leather. Yeah, OK, that's good to know.
- 52:23But I think, you know, some people really like the look of
- 52:26the cow, that the actual hide, they want to see the hide.
- 52:30And it reminds me of like wood, where you either want painted
- 52:35wood or you want like a. Yeah.
- 52:37And that that would be a good way to describe it like
- 52:41corrected versus uncorrected leather.
- 52:44So the corrected leather is like say you took a wood door, this
- 52:50beautiful wood door in your home and you just took a blue paint
- 52:54and paint it over. And I just out blue out of the
- 52:57thin air. And you painted over it and it
- 52:59completely is opaque. You cannot see the wood grain.
- 53:02You can't see the knots in the wood anymore.
- 53:05That would be your corrected leather.
- 53:07The uncorrected leather would be like if you went to that same
- 53:11door without the paint and you just put, you know, a sheer
- 53:16stain over it. Now you see the beauty of the
- 53:18wood. You see the knots and a lot of
- 53:21people like that look with leather, so it really it comes
- 53:25down to personal preference. Which one like Just like the
- 53:29door, it comes down to personal preference.
- 53:30Which which one you like better? What do you want to see?
- 53:34I way long time ago I used to have AI think it was called the
- 53:38Denver flea market or Denver sofa.
- 53:40I can't remember, but it was a full green uncorrected leather
- 53:47and you saw every scratch, everything on it and I loved it.
- 53:52It looks so beat up, but it looked good.
- 53:56It had a good patina and I don't know why I got rid of that sofa.
- 53:59I would love to have that now, even though I like a fabric.
- 54:03But what's great about it is you could pass that down to your
- 54:07kids one day. And it would still be great.
- 54:09It'd be great because it's got like a lifetime of use and you
- 54:12know where the oils have come up and you know, just.
- 54:16Story. Yeah.
- 54:17So you have some areas where it's super dark and rich and
- 54:20then other areas where it's just beat up and scratched and it
- 54:23just looks, I think that looks good.
- 54:26So I'm more of an uncorrected leather.
- 54:29Well that makes me feel like I'm just less worried about what
- 54:33happens to it too. I mean, which now that you know
- 54:36a little difference, what would you, if you were to buy leather,
- 54:39what would you go after? I mean, I think it depends on
- 54:42the room. It really depends on the
- 54:44interior design, because if I were going more of a rustic look
- 54:49or I wanted a rustic moment, I would definitely do uncorrected
- 54:53leather. Whereas if I wanted something
- 54:56like my room's kind of like all over the place and a little bit
- 55:00eclectic, and I want something to tighten it up and bring it
- 55:03together and look really put together more tidy, I would do a
- 55:06corrected leather. OK, but I'm also curious.
- 55:09I mean, a lot of people really want vegan leather and I feel
- 55:12like that's really popular now. And so I think.
- 55:15That's where I'm I'm at now, the instead of an all leather, but
- 55:20that's just me. That's.
- 55:21Just me and you can still find some good quality stuff.
- 55:24I think reputable places carry quality vegan leather and it's
- 55:28just kind of about the look and feel like it can still feel soft
- 55:31and look real. Yeah, and there's a lot of
- 55:34fabrics that look like leather. So, you know, if that's if
- 55:39that's your thing, then go with that.
- 55:41Yeah. And then you get the best of
- 55:42both worlds. That's interesting.
- 55:45Yeah. Well, cool.
- 55:46Yeah. And then so I think we've really
- 55:49touched on a lot of the sofa pieces.
- 55:54I mean, obviously where you sit is important and I think, you
- 55:58know, the foam quality is probably pretty good.
- 56:01That's the only other thing I didn't ask about was.
- 56:04Yeah. You want to make sure that you
- 56:07know, well we will not accept anything less than a 1.8
- 56:11density. And I don't even know if that
- 56:13means anything to anyone, but you know, a lot of ours is 2
- 56:16point density or higher. Which means it's like supportive
- 56:20and durable in my mind. It's the bounce back, like when
- 56:23you're sitting, you want it to bounce.
- 56:25Back. But, you know, if you're jumping
- 56:27all over it every single day, eventually, you know, those
- 56:30things can get a little bit more.
- 56:34And then there's sofas with springs, which are also good.
- 56:37It's just kind of like preference and it doesn't one's
- 56:40not better than the other. The other thing that we should
- 56:43talk about is veneers and why I think there's a perception when
- 56:49we're talking about wood with case pieces or dining.
- 56:54A lot of people think veneers are cheapo junk.
- 56:59Why? Because they think it's going to
- 57:00be like a sticker on top of. Particle ward, I mean, if you're
- 57:06buying it at some non reputable place, maybe, but I mean at
- 57:12Furniture Row art, that's a we love veneers.
- 57:15I've ended up with like a lot of sticker situations, you know,
- 57:18like, and my craft table, for example, or not table.
- 57:23It's just like where the boxes, the wood frame that holds the
- 57:27boxes where I keep my crafting stuff.
- 57:29That's definitely a sticker on particle board.
- 57:32But it doesn't really matter because I'm not like putting
- 57:33weight on it all the time. I'm not using it.
- 57:36Paper is is going to be different than a veneer.
- 57:39Yeah. So maybe yours is like paper.
- 57:41It's different. So veneers can actually be like,
- 57:45good, good, it sounds like. Yeah.
- 57:47Absolutely, especially if you want like a design pattern or
- 57:51design on your dining. Let's talk dining table.
- 57:54So on your designing or. On your dining table, On your.
- 57:58Dining table, so there's intricate patterns and designs
- 58:02that's from a veneer and it's a very efficient, cost efficient
- 58:06way to have a dining table that looks so beautiful with a
- 58:11pattern on it. For example, the salt table,
- 58:14that's a veneer, it's I think that's mango wood and it has a
- 58:18steel base. I mean, that thing is great.
- 58:21That's a great piece. Well, yeah, because wood grain
- 58:23looks really pretty, but if you want something really specific,
- 58:28then you would have to create that look with a veneer.
- 58:32And so, yeah, I think that could be a great option.
- 58:36And mango wood, like you're saying, a lot of veneers and
- 58:39when I've shopped with you guys, they are the people who are
- 58:44talking about the furniture are always saying, oh, this has like
- 58:46an oak veneer. This has like a, you know, a
- 58:49mango wood or, or an Acacia. And so a lot of times it's
- 58:53actual wood. It's.
- 58:55It is. Wood and it's just a thin layer
- 58:58of it on top of another wood and that just allows it to be a lot
- 59:03more cost effective, right? Absolutely.
- 59:05Yeah, absolutely. So I would tell people don't be
- 59:07afraid of veneers. And if you're afraid of them,
- 59:10just come to Furniture Row. Yeah, because ours are are
- 59:15really well made. Yeah, Yeah.
- 59:17That's great. And yeah, I think dining chairs,
- 59:23I don't know if that plays. Like are there dining chairs
- 59:28with veneers? I don't know.
- 59:30So what I would tell you about dining chairs, if you're looking
- 59:33at oh, what type of dining chair, again, it comes down to
- 59:37what, what is it used for? Is it going to be used all the
- 59:40time? Is it going to have you know,
- 59:43are you, do you have children, that sort of thing?
- 59:45So one, one thing that we do, not every dining chair, but a
- 59:51lot of our dining chairs will have a stretcher on it.
- 59:53So that helps with the durability.
- 59:54So if you're concerned about a lot of wear and tear, look for
- 1:00:00the ones that have the stretcher bar on the base of it.
- 1:00:05Like underneath. Yeah, and and again, not all of
- 1:00:08ours have that stretcher bar and those are great chairs too.
- 1:00:11But if you just need that extra durability, then go there.
- 1:00:16Well, yeah, because like a lot of dining sets are sold, I would
- 1:00:20think, with the same type of wood on the chairs versus the
- 1:00:23tables. Yeah, or the chairs.
- 1:00:26But you don't have to buy the same.
- 1:00:27Yeah, your chair. You could do a different chair
- 1:00:29with whatever table that you select.
- 1:00:32That's so true. Yeah, mix and match.
- 1:00:34Not everything has to be matchy, but if you want the matchy,
- 1:00:37that's fine too. So I, I think hardwood and like
- 1:00:43solid hardwood are the prized, you know, material and I think
- 1:00:51it that's appears to be quality or I would think it's quality
- 1:00:55because it would last a long time, but.
- 1:00:56Absolutely. A hardwood table would be great.
- 1:01:00You know, one thing I hear is, oh, it's going to crack in
- 1:01:03certain climates, like in Colorado, people worry about
- 1:01:06that. It could, but it's it's not
- 1:01:10going to. It's not going to be.
- 1:01:11Because the dryness. All the time, huh?
- 1:01:13Because of the dryness in Colorado.
- 1:01:15So there are, but it is something to consider.
- 1:01:18Yeah, but you know. And there's ways to take care
- 1:01:22of, like you're saying, taking care of your furniture.
- 1:01:24If you have a solid wood, there's ways to take care of
- 1:01:26that so that it is likely to just last a long time and look
- 1:01:31nice. Yeah.
- 1:01:32And I don't know about you, but if I'm sitting at my dining
- 1:01:36table, whether it's my breakfast table or dining table, I always
- 1:01:40put a place mat down. Are you like that?
- 1:01:42Do you when you are at your table?
- 1:01:45I know you're a you know I don't living room, right?
- 1:01:49Yeah, I don't, but I do have a coaster all the time.
- 1:01:54So yeah, maybe that's like a me thing that's like less put
- 1:02:00together. But yeah, I guess I have a lot
- 1:02:02of friends that they'll have a runner, but they don't
- 1:02:04necessarily have placemats. Yeah, so it's again, it's what
- 1:02:10what you want to do. I love using a placemat.
- 1:02:13It makes me feel a little bit like it elevates the experience
- 1:02:17of eating my sandwich. Yeah, yeah, you're like.
- 1:02:20Whatever I'm eating. But plus it does protect the
- 1:02:23table. So there's two reasons I do it.
- 1:02:26I just don't want to do anything to my table.
- 1:02:29But definitely coasters for your drinks if you're just sitting at
- 1:02:33your table with drinks. If it's wood.
- 1:02:35Yeah, just, you know, again, it's the year of the dining
- 1:02:39room. It's the year.
- 1:02:40So let's like take care of our dining tables.
- 1:02:42Let's get a new dining table if Yeah, if you're in the market
- 1:02:45for it. And dining tables, like if you
- 1:02:48do love to host especially or you just enjoy being at home, I
- 1:02:53think it's something that you should consider spending a
- 1:02:57little bit more on because the use per, the cost per use will
- 1:03:04go down if you're, if you're spending more time at home
- 1:03:07instead of going out. Sure.
- 1:03:08I mean if you're if you're using it every day, the cost per use
- 1:03:12is way lower than if you're only using it a couple times a year
- 1:03:16on special occasions. Every day should be a special
- 1:03:19occasion, right? Let's stop with this special
- 1:03:21occasion. Bring out the China.
- 1:03:23Go sit at your dining table. I'm going to make you sit at
- 1:03:25your dining table. Yeah, I gotta, I gotta get there
- 1:03:28more. But I mean something interesting
- 1:03:31that you brought up with, you know, the year of the dining
- 1:03:35table is I think you said. The dining room.
- 1:03:37The dining room. Yeah, but we were just talking
- 1:03:40on our episode with Brittany Pillard about Grand Millennial
- 1:03:44that a lot of people are hosting.
- 1:03:47Yeah, more. And I think it's the it's
- 1:03:50definitely a trend. I'm seeing it all over social
- 1:03:52media. And it's because like, you can
- 1:03:56create an environment for people that's a little bit more
- 1:03:59specialized and curated and people can talk a little bit
- 1:04:06more intimately. They can hear each other more.
- 1:04:09There's less to worry about. I don't know, like hosting is
- 1:04:12just becoming more popular because it's very specialized to
- 1:04:16what you and your friends love and, and there's less to worry
- 1:04:20about with reservations and things like that.
- 1:04:23And yeah, there's just a lot to celebrate.
- 1:04:26So, and you don't have to have a giant dining room to have people
- 1:04:31over either. You could just like entertain in
- 1:04:35a smaller space, like I have a four person dining set, but
- 1:04:39sometimes we have just two friends over and it's all about,
- 1:04:42you know, choosing the right size of get together that you
- 1:04:48want to have. It doesn't have to be a huge
- 1:04:49party. Yeah.
- 1:04:50And also a lot of dining tables have leaves, so it can expand
- 1:04:56and it could be bigger. And then for everyday use, it
- 1:04:59can go back down to a smaller size.
- 1:05:02So, you know, even if it is a little crowded in there, if you
- 1:05:05open it all the way and it seats say 8 to 10 people, that may not
- 1:05:10be your everyday way of how you set up your dining room, but for
- 1:05:15that special. Or it can do.
- 1:05:17That your special occasion with your friends.
- 1:05:19Yeah, just. Celebrate today.
- 1:05:21Exactly celebrate today. It could be super cozy that way,
- 1:05:25you know, open it all up. Totally.
- 1:05:27And so that's where I think it may make sense to either make
- 1:05:31sure you're choosing a really high quality or just a quality
- 1:05:35veneer or a solid wood just because you could, if you're
- 1:05:40doing wood for your dining, just because then it'll last longer,
- 1:05:43it'll be durable, it'll you'll enjoy it every day.
- 1:05:46But there are a lot of other great materials, like, you know,
- 1:05:50smart top dining tables that have just this really, you can't
- 1:05:55mess it up type of top. Like it doesn't get the glass
- 1:05:58rings and there's just a lot of or like there's marble top or
- 1:06:04yeah, a lot of. Different.
- 1:06:05Some people are afraid of marble.
- 1:06:07I am not. Yeah, go for it.
- 1:06:09Go with the Marbury. Table is so.
- 1:06:11Pretty, so pretty, yeah. And so is, I wanted to tell you
- 1:06:15about this one, the Rocky River dining table.
- 1:06:17That's a solid hardwood, OK, and it has a varnish on it that
- 1:06:20resists scratches. So that's a great one to have
- 1:06:23too, if you're worried about that.
- 1:06:25That's a feature I never knew dining could have.
- 1:06:27Yeah, yeah, yeah, has a. Specific varnish.
- 1:06:33Oh, I wanted to say this about when we were talking about
- 1:06:35placemats, because even on this table, that Rocky River, I would
- 1:06:39still sit with a place mat. But if you're like, you know, I
- 1:06:42don't want placemats, I don't want to have all that, you could
- 1:06:45always do a charger, you know? Have you seen those bigger than
- 1:06:49a plate? Yeah.
- 1:06:50So like, it's circular. Yeah, it's circular.
- 1:06:52Or it could be square. It just depends on what your
- 1:06:55plates are and what look you're after.
- 1:06:58But you know, they're made to catch if you were to drip, you
- 1:07:03know, whatever it is, food, it, it's made to catch that so that
- 1:07:08you're not getting it all over the place.
- 1:07:09Yeah. Don't eat off your charger.
- 1:07:12Don't eat directly off the charge as you want to.
- 1:07:15I mean, I guess you could, but that's not technically what
- 1:07:18they're for. But yeah, so.
- 1:07:21If it's a lacquer, I wouldn't. Yeah, you don't want to eat
- 1:07:23lacquer. Eating glue is not for adults.
- 1:07:27Or I guess it wouldn't be a glue like a finish.
- 1:07:30But yeah, I feel like between fabrics and, and structures and
- 1:07:35and wood types, there's a lot that we covered a lot of the
- 1:07:39main questions that people have when they're concerned about
- 1:07:42quality in buying furniture. And so now let's talk about like
- 1:07:49where to buy your furniture and where being should you go in
- 1:07:54store? Is that super necessary or
- 1:07:57should you buy online? Oh.
- 1:08:00That is very personal decision too.
- 1:08:05I mean, if it were me and I'm like, OK, I'm not going to go in
- 1:08:09the store, then I want to know if I'm buying it from somewhere
- 1:08:14that it's a reputable place. Yeah, that will stand behind
- 1:08:18their quality and stand behind the product before I would buy
- 1:08:23it. Yeah.
- 1:08:24I wouldn't just buy it because oh, that looks pretty or that
- 1:08:27looks really nice because. You don't know what you're
- 1:08:29getting. You don't.
- 1:08:30I mean it could shows. Like because people could review
- 1:08:33it and be like, this is great and they got it two weeks ago,
- 1:08:36but you don't know how. It's gonna.
- 1:08:38Yeah, I mean, reviews are good, but.
- 1:08:41Reviews are good. I mean, I do look at reviews on
- 1:08:43things just in general. Especially if it's a reputable
- 1:08:46site, yeah. Absolutely, but not.
- 1:08:49I mean, we all know there's reviews that may not be legit to
- 1:08:54on some of these other sites, but.
- 1:08:57Well, and the thing I don't like about buying furniture online is
- 1:09:05there are so many aggregators. And by that I mean there are
- 1:09:10websites that literally just pull furniture from so many
- 1:09:14different vendors and factories and companies.
- 1:09:18And they don't always have the best standards for who they're
- 1:09:24allowing there. Or even if they do, like, have
- 1:09:27they really done the homework to know if these buyers are doing
- 1:09:31the quality tests that they should do?
- 1:09:34And So what I, I prefer if I'm going to shop online is to shop
- 1:09:38from a store that has a brick and mortar as well for furniture
- 1:09:43because they just have a more robust buying team that just,
- 1:09:51yeah, can sift through quality. Still say just be careful
- 1:09:54because yes, they may, but you, you really want to make sure
- 1:10:00that it's the quality that you're buying and and that you
- 1:10:04know. It's that's so true.
- 1:10:06Well, in a lot of it like we were saying is so about
- 1:10:09marketing and then the product actually isn't super high
- 1:10:14quality though, like yeah. They could put a big a large
- 1:10:17price tag, but maybe the quality isn't there, just like we were
- 1:10:20talking about leather, right? How they could say this is all
- 1:10:22leather, but it's not top grain all the way around, it's splits
- 1:10:26or it's the, you know, something else on the side.
- 1:10:28Right. So and that's fine, but then
- 1:10:30what are you paying for? You know, if you're going to pay
- 1:10:32like top dollar, you want top quality and not just the brand.
- 1:10:37Yeah, agreed. And so, yeah, I think it's about
- 1:10:41making sure that where you're buying is creating a selection
- 1:10:45of quality. And I think we all know the
- 1:10:47places we like to shop, whether it's for furniture or clothes
- 1:10:51or, you know, groceries, who is curating the quality that we're
- 1:10:57looking for. And so I, that is my
- 1:10:59recommendation to people as if you're shopping online, even a
- 1:11:02lot of these places that they have expanded lineups, they have
- 1:11:06like, you know, the company has more standard for who they're
- 1:11:11going to let into their retail space.
- 1:11:13Then just like a big website with 50 million products.
- 1:11:19Yeah. And then I get decision fatigue,
- 1:11:21too. I almost need like a curated
- 1:11:23selection of like, here are quality things that we've
- 1:11:26already done the homework for you on.
- 1:11:29And you don't have to like look at all of these different little
- 1:11:32qualifiers to make sure it's right for you because I don't
- 1:11:34have time for that, you know? Nobody.
- 1:11:36Has time. Nobody has time for that.
- 1:11:39But you know how we're talking about like I'm all about buying
- 1:11:42online, just know what you are buying, you know, know the
- 1:11:45company that you're buying from. I personally think Furniture
- 1:11:48Row, it's a great place to buy online.
- 1:11:51It's a great place to come in the store and buy because we
- 1:11:53stand behind our quality, yeah, and our products.
- 1:11:56But. Warranties and yeah.
- 1:11:58Yeah, there's all of those things.
- 1:12:00But you know how I was saying like it's the year of the dining
- 1:12:03room and like let's get back to a beautiful dining room and use
- 1:12:06it and hosting hosted. Yeah.
- 1:12:09So I also think it's the year of going back in the stores.
- 1:12:14Like spend your time in the stores and like make a make a
- 1:12:17fun event out of it and like get out there and shoot.
- 1:12:20A coffee make it a day. Or, or just a couple hours or
- 1:12:25just an hour, whatever it is. But that 2 is like a social
- 1:12:29thing. I mean, you're going to make
- 1:12:31great people that work in these stores and you know, and then
- 1:12:36you'll get a little free education.
- 1:12:37You'll get to sit on lots of different things.
- 1:12:39You get to try out different dining tables so I think it
- 1:12:44should be the year of in store. Shopping well and what's good
- 1:12:48about that is you can have an idea of OK, I really like this
- 1:12:55look how does it actually feel to sit in that sofa or just sit
- 1:12:59at that dining table or in this dining chair because you may
- 1:13:02really like the look but then you decide I actually really
- 1:13:05don't like how that feels like I love the look of like a really
- 1:13:09laid back cushy sofa, but is it going to provide the the support
- 1:13:14I need for like an everyday sofa or is it better just kind of for
- 1:13:18a den where we're only laying down you know so these are.
- 1:13:21More of a perch. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:13:23We're just kind of perch. Yeah, Yeah, exactly.
- 1:13:26There are some that are like so stylish, but they're more of
- 1:13:29like just a place to sit for a SEC and put on your shoes or
- 1:13:33like just like a little sitting room sofa or chair.
- 1:13:36And they're not like, let me sleep here for a couple hours.
- 1:13:41And so, yeah, you really want to feel what you are thinking of
- 1:13:47buying, I think. And even if it's like, OK, when
- 1:13:49in there, I have a lot more information, I'm still going to
- 1:13:53buy online because they have more, you know, options there at
- 1:13:58least. You know, like I've sat on this
- 1:14:01sofa, I've sat in this chair or I've pulled these drawers and I
- 1:14:05know what that's. Like I know what the quality is.
- 1:14:07So I'm so more confident buying from them online.
- 1:14:10I get that. The other thing I do like about
- 1:14:14going in a store and you can order swatches from other
- 1:14:17stores, you know, that have different fabric swatches or
- 1:14:21wood finishes. But I, you know, it's kind of
- 1:14:24nice to just go in the store and see those things right there.
- 1:14:26You don't have to wait for it. You just go to the store and see
- 1:14:28it. So like what does?
- 1:14:29This fabric actually look like. What does this pattern actually
- 1:14:32look like? Yeah, and you can see it right
- 1:14:34then and there and make a decision.
- 1:14:36So part of what's valuable is your time, you know, So do you
- 1:14:40really want to spend a lot of time waiting on samples and
- 1:14:43things like that to arrive? You just go show up in the
- 1:14:46store, check it out. And that's another thing that I
- 1:14:49love about a lot of our vendors. We'll talk upholstery for just a
- 1:14:54second again, but some of our vendors, we have special order
- 1:14:58options where you can. You may not like the fabric that
- 1:15:01you're seeing on the floor, but with that particular vendor,
- 1:15:05they may have a special order option and you can see the
- 1:15:08different fabrics and select something else.
- 1:15:10Same with some of our dining vendors, you can change the
- 1:15:14finish, not all of them, but some.
- 1:15:17So you know, I again, I think it's the year, year of the
- 1:15:21dining room and then the year of in store shopping.
- 1:15:24Just come on in and check it out.
- 1:15:26Yeah, 'cause there's the perception that shopping online
- 1:15:29will save you time and that can be true sometimes, but I don't
- 1:15:34think always because you have to think about the time you're
- 1:15:36taking and the headache you're having of trying to decipher the
- 1:15:40differences between all these different options and and having
- 1:15:45so many options and not knowing what to go with so.
- 1:15:50And like, I mean, we have beautiful photos of of our
- 1:15:54products, but you know, when you see it in person, it's just.
- 1:15:59It's magical and you can feel the leather and the the quality.
- 1:16:06These chairs, for example. I know I love these.
- 1:16:09We've had these for. A while, Yeah, this is like a a
- 1:16:12finished leather. This is a corrected.
- 1:16:16Leather. Yeah, corrected leather.
- 1:16:18And these are super cozy. So like in your when you were
- 1:16:21talking about your own home, like if you had if if you wanted
- 1:16:25it to be the more tidy piece, then something like this could.
- 1:16:28Work. Yeah, it's pretty tailored, it
- 1:16:31feels like. Yeah.
- 1:16:33Well, yeah, I know that was like a lot of information to go
- 1:16:35through for. Covered everything I think we
- 1:16:37have. Anything else we want to talk
- 1:16:39about? I feel like we gave people like
- 1:16:42a good foundation and starting point.
- 1:16:44We didn't get too in the weeds because when things get we.
- 1:16:47Didn't confuse it. Technical Sometimes you have to
- 1:16:50take too many notes and then they're like, wait, I was doing
- 1:16:53something else. But this will just kind of give
- 1:16:55you an example just like a little how to guide on where to
- 1:17:00start when you're buying furniture and what to look for.
- 1:17:02And hopefully that's just it's a little thing you can refer back
- 1:17:06to. You can listen again, share it
- 1:17:08with people that you're like, hey, this would really help you
- 1:17:12because I know you just moved into a new house, so.
- 1:17:15Yeah, yeah. The number one I would say, draw
- 1:17:19out the space or spaces and put your dimensions together.
- 1:17:24Yeah, for sure. And then think about your
- 1:17:27priorities. Think about your priorities.
- 1:17:30What comes first? Where are you going to spend the
- 1:17:33most time? What needs to be bought first?
- 1:17:36If you can't buy everything at once, what budget do you have?
- 1:17:40Are you willing to consider financing?
- 1:17:43Yeah. And then, you know, look at your
- 1:17:46style, just look at all the inspiration you've collected
- 1:17:51over time. Or start collecting some
- 1:17:53inspiration from magazines or Pinterest or social media and
- 1:17:58kind of get an example of an idea of what you're looking for.
- 1:18:04And then, yeah, just decide where you want to shop based on
- 1:18:09quality. Yeah, hopefully with us based on
- 1:18:12quality. That's where I, I mean, that's a
- 1:18:13great place to start with us. Yeah.
- 1:18:17And you know what, the other thing too is some people don't
- 1:18:19know there's what style they like.
- 1:18:21And I definitely think looking at Pinterest and Instagram is
- 1:18:24helpful. Some people don't even want to
- 1:18:25do that. You know, they're just like, I
- 1:18:28want to furnish this room. I don't have time for that.
- 1:18:30I just want somebody to help me put it together.
- 1:18:32That's a great way. Come into the store and have
- 1:18:37somebody help you with that in the store.
- 1:18:39That can still feel like you because I think that's the goal
- 1:18:42is you want your house to feel like your style and you and not
- 1:18:47just like, here's what we saw the showroom and it looks nice.
- 1:18:53So like, how do you personalize it kind of thing?
- 1:18:56Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:18:57Well, it's been great to see everyone on our new set.
- 1:19:00And yeah, we'll see you again. See you again next time.
- 1:19:04Soon, yes. Bye everyone.
