Speaker 1: All right, well here on the One Leg Up Network,
• 0:04
Speaker 1: I have a very special guest on my show. As
• 0:07
Speaker 1: you know, I like to talk sports and athletics and
• 0:10
Speaker 1: adaptability and someone that does have all those qualities of
• 0:16
Speaker 1: love and sports and adapting to his life circumstances. Scott Martin.
• 0:21
Speaker 1: And Scott firstly, thanks for joining. I mean, I'm reading
• 0:24
Speaker 1: your story here through Palm Match. You were a rising
• 0:27
Speaker 1: college soccer coach, and I want to start there because
• 0:30
Speaker 1: it seems like we cant bond right there on sports
• 0:33
Speaker 1: and coaching. So tell us about your coaching career and
• 0:36
Speaker 1: then how you had to adapt to disability through the process.
• 0:44
Speaker 2: I actually got started in my coaching as a freshman
• 0:47
Speaker 2: at college. The coach at the University of Jerry Stark,
• 0:51
Speaker 2: and when I arrived, he knew that I was a forward,
• 0:55
Speaker 2: and first training session he came over to me and said,
• 0:59
Speaker 2: tell you what. I wanted to take everything you know
• 1:01
Speaker 2: about attacking and flip it and run the defense, Like
• 1:05
Speaker 2: what the hell? So I started doing a lot of
• 1:08
Speaker 2: research and I came up with noticing how mathematics had
• 1:13
Speaker 2: to play in soccer, and I started working with that
• 1:17
Speaker 2: and presented to Jerry about my theories and what I
• 1:20
Speaker 2: had learned from the mathematics side and applied it. So
• 1:26
Speaker 2: he got me through the first couple of years of that.
• 1:28
Speaker 2: And also he was the president of a youth soccer
• 1:30
Speaker 2: club who he got me into coaching. And it was
• 1:32
Speaker 2: with I think ten year olds. They didn't want to match.
• 1:36
Speaker 2: They scored like three goals the year before or something,
• 1:39
Speaker 2: so we turned that around. I think that maybe they
• 1:41
Speaker 2: did five hundred first year, and everything was you know,
• 1:44
Speaker 2: it was like starting. I actually went in alex with
• 1:47
Speaker 2: a broadcast journalism degree in mind and I switched it
• 1:52
Speaker 2: to education and physical education. So following that, you try
• 1:58
Speaker 2: to get into coaching, but everybody was high for basketball
• 2:00
Speaker 2: and football. Uh after I got out of school, but
• 2:04
Speaker 2: I ended up in social studies. So anyway, I worked
• 2:07
Speaker 2: at the high school level and also the club level
• 2:11
Speaker 2: and just started working my way up the ladder and
• 2:13
Speaker 2: proving myself and attending camps, going overseas because I came
• 2:17
Speaker 2: into opportunities to do that, and coaching during summer and
• 2:20
Speaker 2: doing quite well over there, and applying for a position
• 2:24
Speaker 2: at the university level at a Division three instead of
• 2:27
  Speaker 2: being someone's assistant at a D one. I wanted to
• 2:30
Speaker 2: do what I wanted to do, and.
• 2:33
Speaker 1: Well, I'm so happy that you pursue that now, the
• 2:35
Speaker 1: youth sports and the and the youth the kids watching
• 2:39
Speaker 1: them later. Second, thank you, I'll add that out, Okay, Scott,
• 2:52
Speaker 1: no I was saying, I've been around sort of camps
• 2:55
Speaker 1: for baseball and watching how these athletes are giving back
• 2:58
Speaker 1: to those younger kids, and it seems like you were
• 3:00
Speaker 1: doing that at the college level. So when you're doing
• 3:04
Speaker 1: these camps, what's it like to watch the youth sports
• 3:08
Speaker 1: be really passionate. I feel like today's youth sports is
• 3:10
Speaker 1: so different, just because maybe they're more on their iPads
• 3:14
Speaker 1: and less on the field, So to be on the
• 3:16
Speaker 1: field with these kids must be really rewarding.
• 3:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, you've got a really good point there. I think
• 3:20
Speaker 2: that my last coaching stint was with some kids that
• 3:24
Speaker 2: I feel probably were grew up right in the middle
• 3:28
Speaker 2: of all of that, and you know, before the match turn,
• 3:32
Speaker 2: you know, put your phone away, do this, do that,
• 3:36
Speaker 2: and to try to gain refocus. But I also think
• 3:39
Speaker 2: that the kids were growing up in the helicopter parents
• 3:43
Speaker 2: stage where everybody got a medal, and that started rubbing
• 3:48
Speaker 2: me the wrong way. Alex in that you know, there's
• 3:50
Speaker 2: something in athletics about competition that you need to be
• 3:54
Speaker 2: able to get out of it and just deal with it.
• 3:56
Speaker 1: Oh absolutely, even when you're running a race like I
• 3:59
Speaker 1: do a lot of time, I mean I want to
• 4:02
Speaker 1: I might be a little slower, but I still want
• 4:03
Speaker 1: to finish ahead of people. You know, it's like yeah, yeah, nature, yeah,
• 4:07
Speaker 1: So okay, So you bring you have this coaching style,
• 4:10
Speaker 1: and then you take the mentorship that you sort of
• 4:13
Speaker 1: got from your mentors, right and bring into the programs.
• 4:15
Speaker 2: It seems like yeah, but I didn't grew up with
• 4:20
Speaker 2: a whole lot of specific soccer. It was picked up
• 4:25
Speaker 2: in our front yards and just messing around and getting involved,
• 4:29
Speaker 2: and I was just into everything. So we finally had
• 4:34
Speaker 2: a German teacher that organized and was running a men's
• 4:39
Speaker 2: program that was with twenty and thirty year olds. A
• 4:43
Speaker 2: lot of them were coming from Europe, a lot of
• 4:47
Speaker 2: them had played with professional teams, some even with their
• 4:50
Speaker 2: national team programs and pulled us into it. At So
• 4:54
Speaker 2: at sixteen, I was playing against all these guys that
• 4:57
Speaker 2: were in their twenties and thirties, had a hell a
• 4:59
Speaker 2: lot more experience. So I guess I was thrown into
• 5:02
Speaker 2: the fire, thrown into the water, just thrown in and
• 5:04
Speaker 2: figure it out sort of a situation. So my upbringing
• 5:08
Speaker 2: with soccer specifically was a little different.
• 5:11
Speaker 1: And how was it playing against these thirty I mean,
• 5:14
Speaker 1: because some of these kids, even in college, looked like
• 5:16
Speaker 1: they could be twenty five or thirty nine eight hits.
• 5:19
Speaker 2: It's literally scared the crap out of me. I remember
• 5:22
Speaker 2: one of my first time starting was at our first
• 5:26
Speaker 2: tournament and it was the semi final of a major tournament.
• 5:29
Speaker 1: What they did was this or was it which team
• 5:31
  Speaker 1: was this?
• 5:31
Speaker 2: This is with a club called the Wisconsin Rapids Kickers.
• 5:35
Speaker 2: And at that time, back in the seventies, you had
• 5:39
Speaker 2: North American Soccer League going, but they did not have
• 5:42
Speaker 2: a feeder system. Their feeder system was guys in their
• 5:45
Speaker 2: upper thirties coming from Europe.
• 5:47
Speaker 1: And then my day job, I actually was talking about
• 5:49
Speaker 1: the New York Cosmos. I think they were part of
• 5:50
Speaker 1: all that st yes.
• 5:51
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, with Beckenbauer and Pila of course, you know
• 5:55
Speaker 2: you had Kroif that was playing one of teams. Just
• 5:59
Speaker 2: so many people that I started watching and observing and
• 6:03
Speaker 2: learning from. So it was just different back then, wasn't
• 6:08
  Speaker 2: very organized.
• 6:10
Speaker 1: Right, and then obviously you take playing against these guys
• 6:15
Speaker 1: and what did you learn from that the most? Like
• 6:16
Speaker 1: what'd you got to have that the most?
• 6:19
Speaker 2: Work your ass off in order to compete? Like what
• 6:23
Speaker 2: you were talking about, Alex, I just want to go
• 6:25
Speaker 2: out well, we want to win, and we end up.
• 6:28
Speaker 2: Actually we're a small club in central Wisconsin. We won
• 6:32
Speaker 2: three straight championships and we were beating all of these
• 6:36
Speaker 2: teams because they didn't think anything much of us, you know,
• 6:39
Speaker 2: fitting for everything that I got into.
• 6:41
Speaker 1: Do you wish the MLS was around then? I mean,
• 6:43
Speaker 1: could you have made it that far?
• 6:46
Speaker 2: I would have wanted to try. We just didn't get
• 6:50
Speaker 2: any exposure and no one again was digging down and
• 6:54
Speaker 2: pulling us up. The avenue was college and there was
• 7:00
Speaker 2: displacement between the North American Soccer League and pulling from
• 7:03
Speaker 2: college players. And actually I was in college basically at
• 7:08
Speaker 2: the time when the NASL was out coming out, that
• 7:10
Speaker 2: was before MLS came in.
• 7:13
Speaker 1: I know, I've been around. We just had a successful
• 7:16
Speaker 1: campaign at we even get the conference championship at my
• 7:18
Speaker 1: alma mater, Queen's College. So I've been around for fifteen years.
• 7:22
Speaker 1: The soccer crew soccer guys are I don't say rowdy,
• 7:26
Speaker 1: but you guys are a bit wild out. You know,
• 7:28
Speaker 1: you have a lot of fun out there and very
• 7:30
Speaker 1: competitive and in just a interesting bunch of bera. How
• 7:33
Speaker 1: was around your teammates back and they were all a
• 7:35
Speaker 1: bit rowdy or what?
• 7:37
Speaker 2: I had my first beer in the van of Jeff
• 7:41
Speaker 2: vaughters van. One of our teammates had first beer at sixteen.
• 7:46
Speaker 2: And that first tournament I was mentioning I learned how
• 7:50
Speaker 2: to drink out of a boot. Have you ever done that? Alex?
• 7:53
Speaker 2: I'm not a real boat boat. It was at this tournament.
• 7:57
Speaker 2: It was a tradition and all the team was to
• 8:00
Speaker 2: sit around and whoever was the second to the last
• 8:03
Speaker 2: person to finish had to buy the next boot. Well,
• 8:07
Speaker 2: myself and my teammates we never had to buy, so
• 8:11
Speaker 2: we proved ourselves on the field. We proved ourselves in
• 8:13
  Speaker 2: the pub.
• 8:15
Speaker 1: I love that. And up in Wisconsin, was there, I
• 8:20
Speaker 1: mean with the Badger or something you would go watch?
• 8:22
Speaker 1: Was they a good soccer program back there back then?
• 8:24
Speaker 2: Or I always I grew up Alex always wanted to
• 8:28
Speaker 2: play in Camp Randall as a running back. Okay, my
• 8:32
Speaker 2: actually my final match in college. We played in Camp Randle,
• 8:38
Speaker 2: so I was able to do it. I remember we
• 8:41
Speaker 2: were in the guest locker room, of course, but walking
• 8:43
Speaker 2: down towards the field and here's you know, I'm in
• 8:48
Speaker 2: Camp Randle and we're playing soccer. They had a good program.
• 8:54
Speaker 2: There were some really good college programs at Division one, two,
• 8:58
Speaker 2: and three when I was in.
• 9:01
Speaker 1: I love it. And you know, it sounds like you've
• 9:03
Speaker 1: been a Wisconsin kid your whole life, right, so you
• 9:05
Speaker 1: kind of grew up there. So that's pretty special to
• 9:07
Speaker 1: walk into that hometown field and just be part of that. Now,
• 9:11
Speaker 1: what was your well, you said an attack or was
• 9:13
Speaker 1: that your position or were you shifting around?
• 9:15
Speaker 2: What was your I actually, when Jerry shifted me back
• 9:18
Speaker 2: to central defense, he allowed me to carte blanche on
• 9:22
Speaker 2: how he wanted to do it. So I pulled Dave
• 9:24
Speaker 2: Schadlin in front of me, and then I put Joe
• 9:29
Speaker 2: Cartier to my left and Joe Avento to my right,
• 9:33
Speaker 2: and then we picked players to put in the midfield,
• 9:36
Speaker 2: and we played a system where it was always working
• 9:41
Speaker 2: off of each other. Because I had Joel to my
• 9:43
Speaker 2: left and Joe to my right. We had to work
• 9:46
Speaker 2: out a whistle technique about being able to make sure
• 9:49
Speaker 2: that everybody was doing But the key we found was communication.
• 9:53
Speaker 2: Try to shut down the opponent in the midfield and
• 9:56
Speaker 2: don't let him get into a position so they have
• 9:58
Speaker 2: a better chance to score. And that was our focus
• 10:01
Speaker 2: and that's what we did. We did slide tackles like
• 10:03
Speaker 2: you didn't want to come and play us. Man, My
• 10:06
Speaker 2: cheeks were just bloody all the time. So that's just
• 10:09
Speaker 2: how we played, just down and dirty.
• 10:12
Speaker 1: Well, you know, And of course i'd say how how
• 10:15
Speaker 1: the card system went, because obviously sometimes you get the
• 10:18
Speaker 1: car to get the where was it? Did you get
• 10:20
Speaker 1: any cards in your career where you had one?
• 10:23
Speaker 2: I had one yellow card and that was for standing
• 10:27
Speaker 2: with one foot partially into the center circle when the
• 10:29
Speaker 2: opponent was kicking off. What the hell? That's the only one. Now.
• 10:34
Speaker 2: I have had a yellow card intentionally as a coach,
• 10:38
Speaker 2: and two years ago when we won this Lady State
• 10:41
Speaker 2: championship at a red card, intentionally to get myself kicked
• 10:45
Speaker 2: out to turn the team around.
• 10:48
Speaker 1: So they managers do that in baseball. They got injected
• 10:50
  Speaker 1: to turn.
• 10:51
Speaker 2: The exactly round, I mean exactly we get.
• 10:54
Speaker 1: I feel like we're gonna talk for hours because I
• 10:55
Speaker 1: feel like we have some connection here. Now I understand,
• 10:59
Speaker 1: and you said your coach now, but you have had
• 11:01
Speaker 1: a long journey from when you were a rising college
• 11:04
Speaker 1: soccer coach to being a coach. Now, tell us about your.
• 11:06
Speaker 2: Journey, man. Well, I after my illness, I was four months,
• 11:12
Speaker 2: five months in the hospital total and relearning everything. It
• 11:15
Speaker 2: was during the season, so my assistant took over. But
• 11:18
Speaker 2: towards the end, I transferred hospitals and our All American
• 11:23
Speaker 2: goalkeeper would come over in the afternoons, throw me in
• 11:26
Speaker 2: a wheelchair, take me out to her truck, put me
• 11:29
Speaker 2: in her truck, put the wheelchair in the back, and
• 11:31
Speaker 2: take me over to training sessions and I would train her.
• 11:35
Speaker 2: So we had four more years as nationally ranked program.
• 11:40
Speaker 2: But that's when I ended up just focusing too much
• 11:43
Speaker 2: on working and that's when I ran square into depression.
• 11:47
Speaker 1: And that's where Where were you coaching at the time?
• 11:49
Speaker 1: Pardon my england on that. Where were you coaching at
• 11:51
  Speaker 1: the time?
• 11:51
Speaker 2: A University Wisconsin etoclaire.
• 11:54
Speaker 1: Okay, so you were in the University of Wisconsin system.
• 11:56
Speaker 2: So oh yes, oh yeah, oh I've stayed here within
• 12:00
Speaker 2: I played in the University of Wisconsin system coach there.
• 12:04
Speaker 2: So that's when I just ran into that wall of
• 12:10
Speaker 2: depression and I just quit and I sold everything didn't
• 12:13
Speaker 2: fit in my car, my cat and I headed out West.
• 12:15
Speaker 2: I ended up at Gonzaga for a little bit, which.
• 12:20
Speaker 1: I'm flesh eating scares the shit out of me personally.
• 12:23
Speaker 1: So how did you? How did this come about? And
• 12:27
Speaker 1: wasn't sort of like I always finding this kind of
• 12:30
Speaker 1: illness comes about randomly, like one random day it starts happening,
• 12:33
Speaker 1: or was this overtime that you'd start noticing things going back?
• 12:37
Speaker 2: I had always wondered how the heck I contracted it? Well,
• 12:40
Speaker 2: we were going to be heading to Europe. Friend and
• 12:42
Speaker 2: I put together we had picked college players from across
• 12:45
Speaker 2: the country and we were heading over to the three
• 12:46
Speaker 2: major tournaments in Europe. And whenever I went over, I
• 12:54
Speaker 2: had opportunities to play. The year before I got sick,
• 12:57
Speaker 2: a guy I had met years before ran into him
• 13:00
Speaker 2: now all of a sudden, he's the Olympic team coach,
• 13:02
Speaker 2: and he asked me to play in an exhibition with them.
• 13:06
Speaker 2: So I knew that I would probably get these opportunities.
• 13:08
Speaker 2: So I was still in training. I think that what
• 13:10
Speaker 2: happened was I was on a weight bench and sweating
• 13:18
Speaker 2: and back at that time when I got sick, nobody
• 13:21
Speaker 2: cleaned things off, so there could have been in someone
• 13:24
Speaker 2: else's sweat the bacteria and maybe I had an open
• 13:28
Speaker 2: pimple or something on my back, whatever it came in,
• 13:31
Speaker 2: because what they ended up finding was the mass of
• 13:35
Speaker 2: the illness, so to speak, was in my lower my
• 13:40
Speaker 2: back muscles. So it kind of piecing that together, but
• 13:44
Speaker 2: nothing ever came out of it for sure what the
• 13:46
  Speaker 2: source was.
• 13:48
Speaker 1: You say illness with a cringe, because I feel like
• 13:50
Speaker 1: you don't feel into yourself ill. You don't have an illness.
• 13:52
Speaker 1: It's just something that happened to you and you adapted
• 13:54
Speaker 1: to it. And see I get from you.
• 13:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, well definitely another way. I haven't always been like this.
• 14:00
Speaker 1: It just happened to you and you adapted to it.
• 14:03
Speaker 2: It took me a little while, Alex. I mean, you
• 14:06
Speaker 2: know that the maleness we're brought up to, you know,
• 14:09
Speaker 2: be that you know, tough guy and all that, and
• 14:12
Speaker 2: you know we're supposed to skip everything around and we
• 14:14
Speaker 2: can handle everything. Now. When I came out, it was stupid.
• 14:18
  Speaker 2: I didn't look I didn't focus on my head, and
• 14:20
Speaker 2: I definitely didn't focus on what was going on with
• 14:23
Speaker 2: me emotionally, and I ended up paying for it.
• 14:26
Speaker 1: Are you look, we're at Thanksgiving right? Are you thankful
• 14:29
Speaker 1: to be coaching now too many years later? I mean
• 14:32
Speaker 1: that has to be a blessing to you.
• 14:36
Speaker 2: You know, I've never thought about it because I always
• 14:39
Speaker 2: just do it. You know, I don't think, oh shit,
• 14:43
Speaker 2: I have to go get ready for this or I
• 14:45
Speaker 2: have to how am I going to figure this out anymore?
• 14:47
Speaker 2: Because I put in my work just like as a player,
• 14:50
Speaker 2: I figured everything out. So I am just this is
• 14:53
Speaker 2: what I do. Man, So I don't think about it
• 14:56
  Speaker 2: at all anymore.
• 14:58
Speaker 1: So it's almost like second nature this. But you say
• 15:01
Speaker 1: it took a while to get you there. I guess
• 15:02
Speaker 1: that's why you wrote the book Play your Heart to
• 15:05
Speaker 1: talk about how you got to where you are right now,
• 15:08
Speaker 1: through the illness, through the disability, if you will.
• 15:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, I always had the statement, even when I went
• 15:14
Speaker 2: back to my early days of coaching, I would always
• 15:16
Speaker 2: talk to players about turn off your brain and play
• 15:19
Speaker 2: from your heart. So, you know, shorten it up. A
• 15:23
Speaker 2: title you don't have to turn off your brain doesn't
• 15:25
Speaker 2: really fit, so play from your Heart Boom. That's a
• 15:28
Speaker 2: killer title, and nobody else has a book out with
• 15:30
Speaker 2: that title really to mention, so that just fit naturally.
• 15:35
Speaker 2: It's it fit perfectly into what the book's all about.
• 15:38
Speaker 1: I want you to have a palm Match for making this
• 15:40
Speaker 1: connection because they have the right guess and the right people.
• 15:43
Speaker 1: I mean, Scott, you are such a great story. You
• 15:47
Speaker 1: have a great story, and you're a great teller of
• 15:49
Speaker 1: your story, and pob match does that. I mean, I'm
• 15:52
Speaker 1: sure you found a lot of different like minded people
• 15:54
Speaker 1: on there that can want to talk to you about
• 15:56
  Speaker 1: this story. Here.
• 15:57
Speaker 2: I've just been blown away from me reaching out and
• 16:02
Speaker 2: finding people like you that are just yeah, let's do this,
• 16:06
Speaker 2: And it's that sort of attitude, Yeah, let's let's record,
• 16:09
Speaker 2: let's do this together, you know, same attitude that's going
• 16:12
Speaker 2: into it. So I think I would I would love
• 16:14
Speaker 2: to do an ad for podcasts. Maybe we're doing that
• 16:17
  Speaker 2: right now.
• 16:18
Speaker 1: Hey, you know you talk about winning state chambone, but
• 16:20
Speaker 1: I think you just said that where are you coaching now?
• 16:22
Speaker 2: If I'm go I ask, I am at Wisconsin. But
• 16:25
Speaker 2: where I'm at right now, Alex is that I'm on
• 16:28
Speaker 2: hiatus because I'm doing all the book promotions. The book
• 16:32
Speaker 2: drops June nine, two days before the World Cup opens,
• 16:37
Speaker 2: so I'm really just kicking back. I'm doing so much
• 16:40
Speaker 2: freaking work. I don't have the time.
• 16:42
Speaker 1: All right that does this. Because it's clear you have
• 16:45
Speaker 1: prosthetic hands. Do you have about prositic feet as well?
• 16:48
Speaker 1: Or where to talk about the proast seasons part of it.
• 16:51
Speaker 2: I use what's called AFOs for their braces because they
• 16:55
Speaker 2: I lost half of feature on my feet. You know,
• 16:57
Speaker 2: the first thing I thought about when they told me
• 17:00
Speaker 2: we ampitated your hands and partsy feels like there goes
• 17:03
  Speaker 2: my playing career.
• 17:04
Speaker 1: I'm done, and you didn't know that till you woke up.
• 17:06
Speaker 2: In other words, exactly, my family actually had to make
• 17:09
Speaker 2: the decision let me die, which is that's how sick
• 17:12
Speaker 2: I was. I was supposed to. I only lived because
• 17:14
Speaker 2: I was an athlete. That's what I was told. My
• 17:16
Speaker 2: heart was beating one hundred and seventy beats per minute
• 17:18
Speaker 2: for a week. I mean, the white blood cells that
• 17:20
Speaker 2: were going through my body and every whatever. But yeah,
• 17:25
Speaker 2: everything has just been extremely busy for me right.
• 17:28
Speaker 1: Now opening up about this, I'd say the maleness of
• 17:33
Speaker 1: this has to be quite a part of the journey,
• 17:36
  Speaker 1: isn't it.
• 17:37
Speaker 2: Yeah, it gives me a chance to reflect. And there
• 17:40
Speaker 2: are times in the book when I mentioned prior to
• 17:43
Speaker 2: a match going over and intentionally shaking the posing teams
• 17:48
Speaker 2: coach's hand. Most of the time it's a male, and
• 17:53
Speaker 2: most of the time those males flinch or look and
• 17:57
Speaker 2: do a double take. And and that's when I know
• 18:01
Speaker 2: what I got as the opponent, because if they treat
• 18:05
Speaker 2: me and don't it doesn't reflect on anything. Then I know, okay,
• 18:08
Speaker 2: we're going to be a regular match. But I can
• 18:10
Speaker 2: tell if they flinch or look at me or just
• 18:13
Speaker 2: kind of get a smile, or oh, this guy's disabled,
• 18:15
Speaker 2: I got him, shit, I got you.
• 18:18
Speaker 1: Now that makes you want to actually beat the shit
• 18:20
Speaker 1: out of them, then.
• 18:21
Speaker 2: Yes, exactly, there's the maleness again. Well, that's just the competitiveness,
• 18:25
  Speaker 2: that's all.
• 18:26
Speaker 1: Absolutely, And it seems like that hasn't changed. Now in
• 18:30
Speaker 1: those five months you had to recover from this, were
• 18:33
Speaker 1: you worried you were going to lose your competitive edge
• 18:35
Speaker 1: or did that competitive edge get you through this?
• 18:38
Speaker 2: No? I lost forty pounds of muscle. Most of it
• 18:42
Speaker 2: was muscle I was told I couldn't move. I thought it.
• 18:45
Speaker 1: Oh, and I mean competitive, I mean the mental competitive edge,
• 18:47
Speaker 1: because I also feel, yeah, people with disabilities in general
• 18:51
Speaker 1: have to have that competitive edge. That's what gets us
• 18:53
Speaker 1: to the next level because people do look at us
• 18:55
Speaker 1: like some kind of way. So if we have that
• 18:58
Speaker 1: competitive mindset in our head, we're gonna get other than
• 19:00
  Speaker 1: the other guy.
• 19:01
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, well that's what got me into gaining those
• 19:03
Speaker 2: forty pounds back. I was supposed to just be laying
• 19:06
Speaker 2: when I was in ICU, just be recovering bull crap.
• 19:11
Speaker 2: I started doing working on my muscles, working on an
• 19:14
Speaker 2: abdomen so when I got over to rehab, I was
• 19:20
Speaker 2: ready for even more training and I blew through everything
• 19:22
Speaker 2: that they had. So that's the competitiveness I relied on
• 19:26
Speaker 2: in order to get me through to the point where
• 19:30
Speaker 2: I could go back to work. So I did it
• 19:32
Speaker 2: all much faster than what they expected. So what you
• 19:36
Speaker 2: were saying too, it definitely holds true that everything comes
• 19:41
Speaker 2: back to just the competitive desire.
• 19:48
Speaker 1: And I love it that you haven't lost that and
• 19:50
Speaker 1: that you kind of regain that too along the way.
• 19:55
Speaker 1: The story, I got so much I can go with this.
• 20:00
Speaker 1: Follow soccer off the field, Like do you watch soccer
• 20:02
  Speaker 1: religiously as well.
• 20:03
Speaker 2: Premier League and US men and US women.
• 20:07
Speaker 1: And I saw today the US men's team has had
• 20:09
Speaker 1: a research and look, I think they saw what the
• 20:11
Speaker 1: women and saying we're gonna like.
• 20:13
Speaker 2: What they just put on the Yeah, and Uruguay. Uh.
• 20:19
Speaker 2: They know how to pass now, I mean nets come around,
• 20:21
Speaker 2: They're able to go back, They're able to switch fields,
• 20:24
Speaker 2: They're able to try to penetrate effectively and from different ways.
• 20:28
Speaker 2: They like to come down to flanks, which tells me
• 20:30
Speaker 2: I would be able to I would, you know, prepare
• 20:32
Speaker 2: for that quite a bit. But I like what they're
• 20:34
Speaker 2: doing US women. They're not retooling, they're taking on a
• 20:39
Speaker 2: different persona of what's going to be coming. So the
• 20:42
Speaker 2: next Women's World Cup, I think this is going to
• 20:45
Speaker 2: be the best US women's team ever.
• 20:48
Speaker 1: Do you wish like guys, guys in as like Donovan
• 20:51
Speaker 1: and Me and Ham would stick around and consult Team USA.
• 20:54
Speaker 1: I feel like they kind of distanced themselves with them,
• 20:55
Speaker 1: are not really about them as much as they should be.
• 20:57
Speaker 2: But they've been well. Me and Ham hasn't been you know,
• 21:00
Speaker 2: on the women's side, they're not distant or well. The
• 21:03
Speaker 2: press is playing up some of the old guard from
• 21:07
Speaker 2: the men's teams about how they go out and just
• 21:10
Speaker 2: tackle and just play tough and and that sort, and
• 21:14
Speaker 2: they they're they're bringing it out in the press that
• 21:17
Speaker 2: the old guard is ridiculing the young guys, the new ones.
• 21:21
Speaker 2: I can see it somewhat. But there's something about what
• 21:26
Speaker 2: Patino was just put on the field for the last round.
• 21:30
Speaker 2: I wish he had more time, though, Man, I wish
• 21:32
Speaker 2: he had more time because he's got something going now.
• 21:37
Speaker 1: If even in in where you're at now, do you
• 21:40
Speaker 1: ever have aspissions to coach beyond Wisconsin? Like, is there
• 21:43
Speaker 1: some other goal you want to reach here?
• 21:46
Speaker 2: If a college contacted me and said, hey, let's talk.
• 21:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, let's talk, and I would advise people not to
• 21:52
Speaker 1: hire you based on a Tooken disabled coach, because there
• 21:55
Speaker 1: is that situation going on too, like people get hired
• 21:58
Speaker 1: because they're disabled because they are minor. No, we would
• 22:00
Speaker 1: be high for our brains, damn it.
• 22:02
Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, you know what, though, if there could be
• 22:05
Speaker 2: some ads out there that see the media side of
• 22:07
Speaker 2: it as well, I mean the recruiting side of it
• 22:10
Speaker 2: with the book, if the book pops, there's a recruiting
• 22:13
Speaker 2: tool right there. It would open so many doors and
• 22:16
Speaker 2: break through that. I have had players that first look
• 22:21
Speaker 2: at me as what the hell is this? But after
• 22:24
Speaker 2: we've been working with each other for a couple of weeks,
• 22:27
Speaker 2: we got them. I get them to buy in, look
• 22:29
Speaker 2: past this and look at me and what I'm trying
• 22:33
  Speaker 2: to present you.
• 22:34
Speaker 1: And it's so interesting mention the handshake, because I feel
• 22:36
Speaker 1: like that's a big part of soccer, right, the whole
• 22:37
Speaker 1: handshake thing. So obviously it to you, it's a very
• 22:43
Speaker 1: important part of soccer. Now you just do it a
• 22:45
Speaker 1: different way and coach up to adapt to that, I guess,
• 22:48
Speaker 1: or just you know, see you as you.
• 22:50
Speaker 2: I think, so that itself takes some time. I mean,
• 22:54
Speaker 2: when I came back to Wisconsin, I would come across
• 22:57
Speaker 2: referees that remembered me even as a player. Uh oh, okay,
• 23:01
Speaker 2: where you bean at. But there were so many coaches
• 23:04
Speaker 2: that didn't know who I was, and I had to
• 23:06
Speaker 2: prove myself well after a couple of seasons, especially after
• 23:09
Speaker 2: winning state championship and stuff. But oh yeah, they look
• 23:13
Speaker 2: past it. But there's still the maleness. It's still a problem.
• 23:17
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 23:17
Speaker 1: You mentioned your family made this decision and I'm sure
• 23:20
Speaker 1: after that decision was very difficult. I mean, my goodness
• 23:24
Speaker 1: to be in that position had to be very tough
• 23:26
Speaker 1: for them. I'm ady right about that in the book.
• 23:29
  Speaker 1: And b B how supportively they've been ever since. I
• 23:33
Speaker 1: mean it seems like, are they tighten it with you
• 23:34
Speaker 1: or you tightened with them? How close are you with
• 23:36
  Speaker 1: your family today?
• 23:38
Speaker 2: When I resigned my position at from coaching and just
• 23:45
Speaker 2: left and head of that West, everybody was wondering, Oh,
• 23:49
Speaker 2: what's what's going on? You know, what's you going to do?
• 23:52
Speaker 2: Because there was concern and I totally get it. You know,
• 23:55
Speaker 2: we had a there was and there are two chapters
• 23:58
Speaker 2: in the book about the ten million dollars UH lawsuit
• 24:02
Speaker 2: against a physician that we say missed diagnosis. Following that,
• 24:10
Speaker 2: there was very a great deal of concern for me
• 24:13
Speaker 2: in how it would handle things because I had resigned
• 24:17
Speaker 2: my position, and then we had the court trial, the
• 24:19
Speaker 2: male practice trial, and and I left and everybody was
• 24:23
Speaker 2: wondering what was going on?
• 24:24
Speaker 1: So I get it that I was going to hear
• 24:28
Speaker 1: a ten million dollar lawsuit with the doctors or what?
• 24:33
  Speaker 1: Who did you?
• 24:34
Speaker 2: Yeah? I originally showed up to the emergency room and
• 24:39
Speaker 2: the guy didn't had a temperature of what one O
• 24:42
Speaker 2: two point six one or two point eight and sent
• 24:45
Speaker 2: me home, didn't take my blood test. If they would
• 24:49
Speaker 2: have tested the blood, we you know, our side was
• 24:52
Speaker 2: that it would have shown that there's a problem going
• 24:55
Speaker 2: on with the white blood cell count. And because he
• 24:58
Speaker 2: missed that, we lost two days before I went back
• 25:02
Speaker 2: in the next day and fell into the coma and
• 25:05
Speaker 2: somebody found it. All my organs were shutting down. Oh
• 25:09
Speaker 2: so we look back at that day, you know when
• 25:11
Speaker 2: he let me go.
• 25:12
Speaker 1: Do you were in the hospital for five months? How
• 25:14
Speaker 1: long was the coma?
• 25:16
  Speaker 2: One month?
• 25:17
Speaker 1: One month? Yeah, and then the rest of the four
• 25:19
Speaker 1: months were to get back out there and work your ass.
• 25:23
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 25:24
Speaker 1: Well, I love hearing stories like that and people like
• 25:26
Speaker 1: that that just won't let their circumstances define them and
• 25:30
Speaker 1: stop them from living life. Now, do you travel with
• 25:32
  Speaker 1: your team?
• 25:35
Speaker 2: No, not at this We just around the state. I
• 25:38
Speaker 2: mean we've gone out of state sometimes with the last
• 25:40
Speaker 2: team that I had, I don't go to Europe anymore
• 25:43
Speaker 2: with I don't do that anymore with kids from across
• 25:48
Speaker 2: the country. Bring up a good point. I haven't done
• 25:51
Speaker 2: that in a while, and I do miss that competitive
• 25:54
Speaker 2: side going to some of the major tournaments over there,
• 25:56
Speaker 2: But no, I haven't really gotten into the travel part
• 25:59
  Speaker 2: at all.
• 26:00
Speaker 1: I want to. I want to ask you about your story,
• 26:04
Speaker 1: and it seems like you want to do an awareness
• 26:05
Speaker 1: as well or what you're dealing with necrotizing FLASHIAT is
• 26:10
  Speaker 1: what it's called.
• 26:11
Speaker 2: Very good and you got it on the.
• 26:12
Speaker 1: First read too, but no, you're more than a coach.
• 26:16
Speaker 1: I feel like you want to bring that awareness now.
• 26:18
Speaker 1: And I guess that's sort of like the recruiting tool, right,
• 26:20
Speaker 1: Like if we bring more awareness to this and catching it?
• 26:23
Speaker 1: Is that what it is about catching it earlier or
• 26:26
Speaker 1: catching it at all? Like what's your thought on it?
• 26:29
Speaker 2: As a media love to call it the flash any disease.
• 26:32
Speaker 2: It doesn't eat flash. It's just what the body does
• 26:34
Speaker 2: to protect us. And what happens because somebody the body
• 26:37
Speaker 2: releases somebody white blood cells into the system. They tended
• 26:40
Speaker 2: to gather up in the extremities and therefore there was
• 26:46
Speaker 2: no blood flow or lack of blood flow, and that's
• 26:48
Speaker 2: where the amputations had to occur because it was that's
• 26:50
Speaker 2: what was killing me. It's not just necessarily bringing that
• 26:54
Speaker 2: up because that's not in the media. There haven't been
• 26:56
Speaker 2: any cases coming up. Well, hell, Trump takes over every
• 27:02
Speaker 2: every inch of volume in the news that if there
• 27:04
Speaker 2: were any it wasn't it wouldn't be able to get
• 27:07
Speaker 2: out into the media. What I want to get into
• 27:10
Speaker 2: is trying to help with the disabled community because talking
• 27:14
Speaker 2: about Trump again, with some of the things that he's
• 27:16
Speaker 2: been proposing and talking about his just his demeanor against
• 27:20
Speaker 2: the disabled people, I want to try to help. It's
• 27:23
Speaker 2: a splintered organization. I have friends over in Europe that
• 27:26
Speaker 2: are involved in it, and here I see it as
• 27:29
Speaker 2: being disorganized. I always say, follow what the LGBTQ community
• 27:34
Speaker 2: has done and do the same thing. No one's approached
• 27:38
Speaker 2: me on trying to become something while I am part
• 27:40
Speaker 2: of one organization, but we haven't really done much. Going
• 27:43
Speaker 2: back to what I was saying about it being splintered.
• 27:45
Speaker 1: Coach, I've to go a coach now. Because you are
• 27:47
Speaker 1: a coach, you are. I need to align you with
• 27:52
Speaker 1: someone that's also up in the Minnesota area because she
• 27:54
Speaker 1: is Jenna Uttenberg, who also found through Podmatt. She's about
• 27:58
Speaker 1: accessibility and making the world more I gotta connect you
• 28:01
Speaker 1: to and maybe you guys can collaborate. But the shutdown, right,
• 28:05
Speaker 1: we have forty three days of shutdown, and to your point,
• 28:08
Speaker 1: no one actually cared about the people disabilities. They only
• 28:10
Speaker 1: care about the SNAP program and all that. I mean,
• 28:12
Speaker 1: there were so many government services lost during those forty
• 28:14
Speaker 1: three days. Only I felt like I was beating the
• 28:17
Speaker 1: drugs saying hey, what happened to caring about the disabled community.
• 28:20
Speaker 1: I mean, that's kind of where I came at it.
• 28:21
Speaker 2: About there's only if you just think about media, which
• 28:27
Speaker 2: should be the same as looking at a newspaper. There's
• 28:30
Speaker 2: only one front page, and there's only so much can
• 28:32
Speaker 2: fit on that front page. So when Trump spouts this,
• 28:35
Speaker 2: that and the other thing, he's taking up three quarters
• 28:38
Speaker 2: of the page at least at least, and there's just
• 28:41
Speaker 2: no room for anything to get out. Maybe I could
• 28:44
Speaker 2: do something with this.
• 28:46
Speaker 1: Well, I'm so glad you're introducing us on my platform
• 28:48
Speaker 1: because I want to partner more and cool talk about
• 28:50
Speaker 1: this now, adaptive soccer, So we've seen people playing wheelchair
• 28:55
Speaker 1: soccer now and it's a little more prevalent. I mean
• 28:58
Speaker 1: that's here in New York. Is there adaptive sports up
• 29:02
Speaker 1: in Wisconsin? Sorry sound naive, but it just seems like
• 29:05
Speaker 1: a distant concept for something like Wisconsin. Is there adaptive
• 29:09
  Speaker 1: sports up there?
• 29:10
Speaker 2: Though? Actually I'm gonna I'm gonna venture off a little bit.
• 29:15
Speaker 2: United Soccer Coaches is a huge organization. They're doing my
• 29:20
Speaker 2: story in their winter edition of Soccer Journal. Once that
• 29:23
Speaker 2: comes out, I'm going to use that platform to approach
• 29:28
Speaker 2: US Soccer because they have their own program for this
• 29:31
Speaker 2: and see if I can get involved. I've got to
• 29:33
Speaker 2: prove myself first on podcasts like yours, and when this
• 29:37
Speaker 2: story comes in in the Soccer Journal, it's going to
• 29:39
Speaker 2: be huge. So then I can knock on doors and say,
• 29:44
Speaker 2: by the way, did you read this and what can
• 29:47
Speaker 2: I do to help? I actually did last week. US
• 29:50
Speaker 2: Soccer has something coming out and I wrote to them,
• 29:52
  Speaker 2: and I don't have a platform yet, but I wrote
• 29:55
Speaker 2: to them and give them my information. You know, we
• 29:58
Speaker 2: got this book coming out. Let me know if there's
• 30:00
Speaker 2: something I can do to help you. It's a different
• 30:03
Speaker 2: part of US Soccer than the disabled side, which I
• 30:09
Speaker 2: am going to be reaching out to them for sure.
• 30:12
Speaker 1: All right, Well, no, and he was updated on that.
• 30:14
Speaker 1: I would love to maybe tag US Soccer in this
• 30:17
Speaker 1: and just get them involved in cool who Scott Martinez
• 30:19
Speaker 1: and and what he's up to. But yeah, the adaptive soccer.
• 30:23
Speaker 1: I asked that because I feel like your competitive nature
• 30:26
Speaker 1: you didn't want to stop playing. So have you looked
• 30:28
Speaker 1: into playing again in that adaptive level.
• 30:35
Speaker 2: The plastic surgeon when I went down for amputation day,
• 30:38
Speaker 2: I don't know if it's two days, one with their
• 30:40
Speaker 2: hands and the other one was the feet. I don't
• 30:42
Speaker 2: know which one, but there happened to be a plastic
• 30:44
Speaker 2: surgeon from very prominent plastic surgeon out of Madison that
• 30:50
Speaker 2: day and he heard about me, and he looked into
• 30:52
Speaker 2: the case and he came up with this crazy idea.
• 30:55
Speaker 2: My right lower leg was so lost that nine of
• 31:01
Speaker 2: surgeons would have just done a BK A blown the amputation.
• 31:05
Speaker 2: This guy said, no, I have an idea, and he
• 31:09
Speaker 2: took a muscle from my abdomen and skin from my
• 31:13
Speaker 2: thigh because I was in a coma. They couldn't you
• 31:15
Speaker 2: skin for my back, and he remade my foot at
• 31:18
Speaker 2: least I have half a foot there. Wow, so there's
• 31:21
Speaker 2: no way that I can run. I actually went through
• 31:25
Speaker 2: and it's in the book. A couple of times I
• 31:26
Speaker 2: had surgery on the foot and I was walking around
• 31:29
Speaker 2: on my knees, for God's sakes, because the foot would
• 31:33
Speaker 2: open up. But he thought, you're an athlete, and maybe
• 31:38
Speaker 2: you can. You can run no way in hell, But
• 31:42
Speaker 2: at least I didn't lose one more extremity.
• 31:46
Speaker 1: Nor do you channel your obviously you channel it in
• 31:49
Speaker 1: the coaching, but how do you channel the frustrations that
• 31:53
Speaker 1: you still may feel today that you felt in that
• 31:56
Speaker 1: five month period? Like, how do you channel it? Is
• 31:59
Speaker 1: it writing? Is it going on podcast telling your story?
• 32:02
Speaker 1: Is it even channeling it through coaching? Maybe a little
• 32:05
Speaker 1: more aggressively on some days and others.
• 32:06
Speaker 2: I don't know, But man, we're not even touching on.
• 32:08
Speaker 2: One of the big things is discrimination. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
• 32:13
Speaker 2: I can't get it. You know, nobody would even interview
• 32:16
Speaker 2: me for a full time teaching gig. I taught social
• 32:19
Speaker 2: studies in history, I was teacher of the year and stuff,
• 32:22
Speaker 2: and nobody plus through it and discrimination I faced in
• 32:26
Speaker 2: trying to get into coaching. So man, there's just so
• 32:31
Speaker 2: many things that I try to touch on that we
• 32:35
Speaker 2: get into in the book.
• 32:37
Speaker 1: Did all of this leak? Since you're a history guide,
• 32:39
Speaker 1: all this leads you going into studying disabled history, A
• 32:44
Speaker 1: little more and disability history, and wow, how can I
• 32:46
Speaker 1: break the trend of what's been going on the last time?
• 32:49
Speaker 1: Because we all know the ADA exists, right, but we
• 32:51
Speaker 1: don't think it always serves us the right way, or
• 32:54
Speaker 1: does it at all?
• 32:55
  Speaker 2: I mean, no, it doesn't. I mean I substitute at
• 32:59
Speaker 2: high school right now, Alex, And for a while we
• 33:03
Speaker 2: had one kid in a wheelchair, and I see how
• 33:06
Speaker 2: distraught he was. Now he graduated, and we had a
• 33:09
Speaker 2: good discussion before he graduated. And this year there's a
• 33:13
Speaker 2: sophomore where I'm teaching, it's just sophomore, juniors, and senior.
• 33:16
  Speaker 2: So here's a sophomore and he's got the same I
• 33:20
Speaker 2: don't know attitude, Like everybody looks at me differently, and
• 33:23
Speaker 2: it makes it I just feel bad for him. Yeah, man,
• 33:27
Speaker 2: I want to just and here I am. And I
• 33:30
Speaker 2: think he maybe he recognizes, maybe it helps. Yesterday I
• 33:34
  Speaker 2: noticed there's a girl that's missing a hand. She wears
• 33:38
Speaker 2: long sleeves, you know, to cover and I get that,
• 33:41
Speaker 2: you know, I wear long sleeves, but part of it
• 33:44
Speaker 2: is because I don't want my batteries popping out and
• 33:46
Speaker 2: then losing him. But there is something that if the
• 33:51
Speaker 2: book pops. Again. If the book pops, I think it's
• 33:54
Speaker 2: naturally going to help the disabled community, especially people with amputations.
• 34:01
Speaker 1: All right, million million dollar questions. Firstly, is coaching now
• 34:07
Speaker 1: versus coaching then? Is it rewarding in a different way
• 34:11
Speaker 1: for you? Or is it rewarding the same way for.
• 34:13
Speaker 2: You, same, exactly the same.
• 34:15
Speaker 1: I want to win, baby, and watching the kids learn
• 34:19
Speaker 1: from you has to mean the whole world.
• 34:22
Speaker 2: I've changed the way I coach, though I have to
• 34:30
Speaker 2: do it more cerebrally because I can't demonstrate, you know,
• 34:34
  Speaker 2: and then.
• 34:35
Speaker 1: Or you can call the abuse it. I mean the
• 34:36
Speaker 1: way that these coaches are being sort of what's the
• 34:40
Speaker 1: word handcuffed from actually coaching, because god forbid, you make
• 34:43
Speaker 1: the kids on a lap? All that's what do you mean?
• 34:46
Speaker 1: What do you mean?
• 34:47
Speaker 2: Ah? I'm all right, So, Alex, I'm in a classroom
• 34:52
Speaker 2: with kids, soccer field with kids. And I think that
• 34:57
Speaker 2: this generation great generation. I think they're some potential leaders
• 35:01
Speaker 2: in it. I think that they feel that adults are
• 35:07
Speaker 2: clamping them down and not trusting them and not placing
• 35:12
Speaker 2: responsibility on them, especially parents, and the teachers are afraid
• 35:16
Speaker 2: to I committed my positions and I don't care you want.
• 35:21
Speaker 2: I expect them to be responsible for their actions and
• 35:25
Speaker 2: their training and all these things. They respond to it.
• 35:28
  Speaker 2: I was amazing.
• 35:30
Speaker 1: I was talking to one of the trainers anonymously and
• 35:33
Speaker 1: they're like, yeah, you know, some of these kids, even
• 35:35
Speaker 1: though they're in college, come in and say I don't
• 35:37
Speaker 1: want to play today. My workloads too much. And then
• 35:40
Speaker 1: and the coach's idea is, well, if you don't want
• 35:42
Speaker 1: to play, the next guy up's going to do better
• 35:44
Speaker 1: than you and you may not play it again. Do
• 35:45
Speaker 1: you have that mentality too, like, yeah, you don't want
• 35:47
Speaker 1: to play today, I really could go and you can sit,
• 35:50
Speaker 1: but you may not play again.
• 35:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Well, I also I have the benefit of
• 35:55
Speaker 2: Central Wisconsin that work ethic there isn't work ethic. I
• 36:00
Speaker 2: think it's tarnished a little bit though, but there is
• 36:04
Speaker 2: a work ethic out there, you know. I would kind
• 36:07
Speaker 2: of like to get back and see what check it
• 36:09
Speaker 2: out across the country again, Like when I was coaching
• 36:11
Speaker 2: at college and recruiting and competing against other teams on
• 36:15
Speaker 2: how things are elsewhere. I've kind of lost that because
• 36:20
Speaker 2: I've lost touch with that.
• 36:21
Speaker 1: But that when you were coaching then were you doing
• 36:23
Speaker 1: conferences like do you are you a big conference guy
• 36:26
Speaker 1: to get together with a lot of other different coaches
• 36:28
Speaker 1: and say, yeah, let's brainstorm and see how we can
• 36:30
Speaker 1: make our sport better.
• 36:34
Speaker 2: Go to the NSCA National Soccer Coach Association of America
• 36:39
Speaker 2: conferences and yeah, and rob Els was with that, but
• 36:44
Speaker 2: a lot of it, I'll be honest, was putting together
• 36:46
Speaker 2: a schedule that would get us into the national tournament.
• 36:50
Speaker 2: You got to know.
• 36:50
Speaker 1: People, definitely, And I guess scheduling is a different thing
• 36:55
Speaker 1: now your twelve year old. No, you're coaching twelve year olds.
• 37:00
Speaker 1: I feel like the whole narrative today is, well, we're
• 37:02
Speaker 1: putting too much pressure on these kids. They have school work,
• 37:05
Speaker 1: they have this. Are you finding that, I mean, work
• 37:07
Speaker 1: out the good side? Are you finding there's a lot
• 37:09
Speaker 1: of pressure on kids? Say that maybe we didn't have
• 37:11
  Speaker 1: back then.
• 37:13
Speaker 2: Oh heck, yeah, it doesn't belong so it shouldn't come
• 37:17
Speaker 2: out on the soccer field. Soccer field should be their
• 37:19
Speaker 2: their place to get away. Now, those coach, those kids
• 37:22
Speaker 2: that I coached that are in the book, they were
• 37:26
Speaker 2: the third team. The top two teams passed all these
• 37:29
Speaker 2: kids over, so they had a chip on their shoulder,
• 37:31
Speaker 2: so they had something else to prove or they I
• 37:36
Speaker 2: don't know if they looked at it as pressure. But
• 37:39
Speaker 2: once they broke through that and gained their confidence, they
• 37:41
Speaker 2: had no pressure and that's when they really started rolling.
• 37:45
Speaker 1: Very cool. Now, I see here a little fun fact,
• 37:49
Speaker 1: and this is our first conversation, so this should be
• 37:51
Speaker 1: a second one as well, that you've also adopted kids
• 37:56
Speaker 1: through this whole time. I mean, what was the process
• 37:59
Speaker 1: behind that? What? That's a rewarding thing to be a
• 38:02
Speaker 1: parent of itself, I'm sure.
• 38:04
Speaker 2: I When I went to Gonzaga, I won't get into that,
• 38:09
Speaker 2: and then I let the athletic director know that I
• 38:13
Speaker 2: was withdrawing my name from becoming the full time coach there.
• 38:19
Speaker 2: It was because I had seen a news story on
• 38:22
Speaker 2: a disaster in Haiti and there are a lot of
• 38:26
Speaker 2: orphan children, so something went off of my mind. But
• 38:30
Speaker 2: I thought more of the Soviet Union. Well, I had
• 38:34
Speaker 2: been to the Soviet Union, and I've also been to Russia,
• 38:37
Speaker 2: and there was something sort of a pull in that direction.
• 38:41
Speaker 2: Ended up not adopting from their two little kids. A
• 38:44
Speaker 2: brother and sister came home from Romania, and then a
• 38:47
Speaker 2: year later, a little boy from Ethiopia. A year after
• 38:51
Speaker 2: that a girl from Ethiopia, little girl from Ethiopia, and
• 38:55
Speaker 2: two years after that another little girl from Ethiopia. All
• 38:57
Speaker 2: those Ethiopians experienced their parents that I e eightes. So
• 39:03
Speaker 2: here we had. Now I had a basketball team, you know,
• 39:05
Speaker 2: five kids. I had a basketball team. Yeah, and all
• 39:10
Speaker 2: just there was such an interesting mix.
• 39:13
Speaker 1: Did they ask a lot of questions because you were
• 39:16
Speaker 1: you disable at the time or was this before?
• 39:18
Speaker 2: Yeah? Oh yeah I was. Now they just saw me
• 39:22
Speaker 2: as tata which is Romanian for father. No, that was it.
• 39:26
Speaker 2: They didn't. But three of those kids were African Americans,
• 39:29
Speaker 2: so they ran into discrimination as well. So we had
• 39:33
Speaker 2: something there. I'll tell the story about real quickly, Alex,
• 39:37
Speaker 2: about when my Ethiopian son got into car after I
• 39:41
Speaker 2: picked him up from kindergarten one day. He got in
• 39:45
Speaker 2: and said, Tato, when am I going to turn white?
• 39:49
Speaker 2: Because we're in Olympia, Washington at the time, very white
• 39:55
Speaker 2: bread and right then, man, everything I learned growing up
• 39:59
Speaker 2: about Martin with the King and all, you know, ah
• 40:03
Speaker 2: civil rights movement and everything just went out the window.
• 40:07
Speaker 2: We haven't come that far. I mean, here's my six
• 40:10
Speaker 2: year old son asking when he's going to turn white
• 40:13
Speaker 2: because we haven't changed enough, and here we are. Yeah.
• 40:18
Speaker 1: Well, I also know that you have very positive spin
• 40:21
Speaker 1: on things, clearly, and I know that you deal with
• 40:23
Speaker 1: things in the realness. But when you are feeling at
• 40:28
Speaker 1: your worst, and do you ever get to that point still?
• 40:30
Speaker 1: I mean, or are you pretty much.
• 40:33
Speaker 2: When one when one of the hands breaks down, and
• 40:38
Speaker 2: I'll tell you a little uh, zippers on pants are
• 40:42
Speaker 2: not made for left handed people. Oh when the right
• 40:46
Speaker 2: hand broke, that breaks down, you got a zip with
• 40:49
Speaker 2: and it's not made for that. Man, that's when I
• 40:53
Speaker 2: can get Yeah, and then if I can.
• 40:56
Speaker 1: You pull yourself out of it when you're in an
• 40:57
Speaker 1: adultrum kind of state.
• 40:58
Speaker 2: There work, I go right back to that, you know,
• 41:05
Speaker 2: listen to music. But probably work in the book has
• 41:09
Speaker 2: been great because it's been now we're in the different
• 41:12
Speaker 2: stage of the book, because the writing's all done.
• 41:15
Speaker 1: All right. The first time you got to even with
• 41:17
Speaker 1: your hands even touch the soccer ball was at a
• 41:21
Speaker 1: moment I feel like there's something there.
• 41:24
Speaker 2: Yeah, wow, man, here's something I never lost because I
• 41:31
  Speaker 2: can't feel it right, I can't run, I can't I
• 41:34
Speaker 2: can still all right, So if in training something weird
• 41:37
Speaker 2: happens and a ball comes to me. I think, you know,
• 41:41
Speaker 2: ball is like boom. I just still have the natural,
• 41:44
Speaker 2: you know, use my shin to lay a ball down
• 41:46
Speaker 2: or ease. And you know, my team, my players would
• 41:50
Speaker 2: be like holy shit, you know, because they still view
• 41:54
Speaker 2: me as being I have this these disabilities, but if
• 41:57
Speaker 2: I pull off a move, wow, you know, that's just
• 42:02
Speaker 2: national and it feels so good, man, it feels so good.
• 42:05
Speaker 1: One of my favorite things we were in practice, well,
• 42:10
Speaker 1: they were doing practice before a game. I used to
• 42:11
Speaker 1: do announcing for Queen's College soccer. So I used to
• 42:13
Speaker 1: do all you know, and in practice, you know, the
• 42:16
Speaker 1: soccer ball would just fly all over and I loved it.
• 42:19
Speaker 1: I love it though, because I'd be able to show off. Hey,
• 42:22
Speaker 1: you know what, I got one leg, but I can
• 42:23
Speaker 1: kick the ball as better, you know, as much as
• 42:25
Speaker 1: you can. And so the ball is coming to me
• 42:30
Speaker 1: and I did a little showy I did for it
• 42:33
Speaker 1: as well as goalie, you know, because I want to
• 42:34
Speaker 1: show off a bit. It was cool. But no, I
• 42:37
Speaker 1: remember one time we were made the play the finals
• 42:41
Speaker 1: for the East Coast Conference Queen's College Women's soccer. I
• 42:44
Speaker 1: don't know if you know the programs around here in
• 42:46
  Speaker 1: the Northeast.
• 42:46
  Speaker 2: Yes, I always I know.
• 42:49
Speaker 1: I'm in front of a coach, Christian Carl Christian Forever.
• 42:52
Speaker 1: I don't know if you know that name or not,
• 42:53
Speaker 1: but he was my first guest on the podcast back
• 42:56
Speaker 1: in twenty ten at twenty ten, so sort of full
• 42:59
Speaker 1: circle with that soccer coach. Soccer coach. But I went
• 43:03
Speaker 1: up there when they went to the tournament championship and
• 43:07
Speaker 1: I in front of a crowd of people and I'm
• 43:09
Speaker 1: gonna kick this field to kick the soccer ball into dead.
• 43:12
Speaker 1: And I did in front of my crush at the time,
• 43:15
Speaker 1: who was on the softball team, and then in front
• 43:17
Speaker 1: of the whole fans. I'm like, this is pretty cool.
• 43:19
Speaker 2: Cool, so do something and no one expects. Just totally
• 43:23
  Speaker 2: on a WIMU.
• 43:24
Speaker 1: Is like it just it just is pardon me to
• 43:27
Speaker 1: just show people. I call it smashing the stigma. That's
• 43:30
Speaker 1: what I really call it, Scott.
• 43:31
Speaker 2: See, because you are helping those who are not disabled,
• 43:36
Speaker 2: at least outwardly disabled physically disabled, help them learn a
• 43:41
Speaker 2: little bit, helps them break through that a little bit
• 43:44
  Speaker 2: at a time.
• 43:45
Speaker 1: But like for you, the girl with no hand, she
• 43:48
Speaker 1: could see you and say, oh my god. You know,
• 43:50
Speaker 1: there's just so you're helping others smash it. We're both
• 43:53
Speaker 1: helping people smash their own stigmas and their own worries
• 43:56
Speaker 1: and insecure about being disabled.
• 43:58
Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, I think that's our responsible. We have
• 44:01
Speaker 2: a responsibility, and that's part of that responsibility. A small part.
• 44:06
  Speaker 2: There's a big one.
• 44:08
Speaker 1: And I know, Wisconsin, is it accessible? Is there a
• 44:11
Speaker 1: fight that you have to do every day to make
• 44:13
Speaker 1: it accessible for you?
• 44:15
Speaker 2: It's not too bad. I'll tell you. One place is
• 44:17
Speaker 2: not accessible are the subways in Paris? Trying to get
• 44:22
Speaker 2: luggage through a subway in Paris, try to hall stuff? No,
• 44:26
Speaker 2: that just came to mind. Sorry to go off on
• 44:28
  Speaker 2: that tangent.
• 44:29
Speaker 1: Hey, subways aren't always accepsible either. It's very tough.
• 44:32
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean no, I think in general, yeah, everything's
• 44:37
Speaker 2: I think things have really come around. They've come a
• 44:39
Speaker 2: long way since I've been disabled I remember.
• 44:42
Speaker 1: As a kid. Yeah, and I should say the ADA
• 44:44
Speaker 1: is good. I just feel like it could be expanded
• 44:46
Speaker 1: even more and people it's going be more trained on
• 44:50
Speaker 1: how to utilize it and not weaponize it. By the way,
• 44:54
Speaker 1: But I mean, businesses can actually utilize it more than
• 44:57
  Speaker 1: they do.
• 44:58
Speaker 2: Sometimes, well, it is amazing. Sometimes you happen to see
• 45:01
Speaker 2: a store and they have ten disabled parking spaces and
• 45:05
Speaker 2: you wonder, and then somebody pulls in it, you know,
• 45:07
Speaker 2: doesn't have the sticker. I never use one because I
• 45:10
Speaker 2: should leave it for people, you know, decide to use it.
• 45:15
Speaker 2: But yeah, it's being abused is one thing. Just having
• 45:21
Speaker 2: things there to equalize. That's what the AD is all about, right,
• 45:25
Speaker 2: It's to try to equalize level the playing field.
• 45:29
Speaker 1: And then you know I talked, I'm just saying them
• 45:31
Speaker 1: now because obviously athletes love to watch film with themselves
• 45:34
Speaker 1: and watch their old game tape. Do you do you
• 45:37
Speaker 1: find yourself sitting down sometimes and watching your old tape
• 45:40
  Speaker 1: or not?
• 45:40
Speaker 2: Real? Wow? Got it? I mean, in preparation for the
• 45:44
Speaker 2: book and doing the media stuff, somebody asked me to
• 45:47
Speaker 2: pull some photographs together. You know, it goes back to
• 45:51
Speaker 2: college and stuff and before and after when I was
• 45:55
Speaker 2: during my playing days. Yeah, the memories, you know, just
• 45:58
Speaker 2: before and I was talking about Joel and Joel and
• 46:01
Speaker 2: Dave you know playing in the back together. Yeah, or
• 46:06
Speaker 2: if one of them reaches out, are actually one of
• 46:07
Speaker 2: my former players that coaches that they're now soccer parents
• 46:12
Speaker 2: reach out to me on Facebook. Yeah, it just takes
• 46:14
  Speaker 2: a mind back.
• 46:15
Speaker 1: It is it is nice, It is nice. Yeah, it
• 46:17
Speaker 1: is nice to Okay, I'm asking this was the goalie
• 46:21
Speaker 1: and the craziest teammate because I feel like goalies have
• 46:23
Speaker 1: such a mindset in that they're the wildest guys in
• 46:27
  Speaker 1: that egg. Yeah.
• 46:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, the good attackers can be arrogant. They better be
• 46:34
Speaker 2: at least cocky arrogance though. I would always take advantage
• 46:38
Speaker 2: of them when I was playing center back. But yeah,
• 46:42
Speaker 2: goalkeepers are tend to be a little crazy.
• 46:44
Speaker 1: Oh nuts. But but that's what makes them good. They're
• 46:47
Speaker 1: their craft. I mean they have to be.
• 46:49
Speaker 2: I mean you look at the athleticism and just you
• 46:51
Speaker 2: can't think about diving. It's like doing a bicycle kick.
• 46:56
Speaker 2: It just happens. He can't think about it. Or that's
• 46:59
Speaker 2: when you can get hurt.
• 47:01
Speaker 1: All right. So you guys been involving in the college
• 47:03
Speaker 1: scene and what's going on there. I don't feel like
• 47:06
Speaker 1: NIL can impact soccer as much as going to impact
• 47:09
Speaker 1: the college football and college basketball guys. Or do you
• 47:11
Speaker 1: feel differently? Can the NIL make a positive fact impact
• 47:14
  Speaker 1: for soccer player?
• 47:17
Speaker 2: I think US Soccer is going to be having the
• 47:20
Speaker 2: biggest impact on college soccer. US soccer is trying to
• 47:25
Speaker 2: tell the NCAA to last. I heard split into two seasons,
• 47:31
Speaker 2: break it up because of what they're trying to do
• 47:35
Speaker 2: with MLS Next. I lost one of my top players
• 47:38
Speaker 2: last year. He signed with MLS next. That's what's going
• 47:41
Speaker 2: to be hurting soccer is Major League Soccer.
• 47:44
  Speaker 1: And but that's a good thing to me. That's a
• 47:47
Speaker 1: good thing. Sports evolving and there's a pipeline there.
• 47:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, but then you get into the politics and the
• 47:53
Speaker 2: pay for play shit and how things are directed. You know,
• 47:57
Speaker 2: it's nice to see there's a lot of color out
• 47:59
Speaker 2: on that on the field for the national teams. Back
• 48:03
Speaker 2: when I was doing reviews of players for US Soccer,
• 48:09
Speaker 2: my list usually had a lot of players with color
• 48:13
Speaker 2: on it, but they wouldn't go through because I wasn't
• 48:15
Speaker 2: the head coach and they'd all come out on the
• 48:18
Speaker 2: other end as a team of white kids. But I
• 48:23
Speaker 2: think things are a change, and like you said, yeah,
• 48:27
Speaker 2: it's going to be happening for the better. But we
• 48:29
Speaker 2: might have some imbalance between what's going on with MLS
• 48:34
Speaker 2: Next and pulling the younger players away and going on
• 48:37
Speaker 2: the college or not. I think you're going to see
• 48:39
Speaker 2: the level of college drop, and definitely the level of
• 48:42
Speaker 2: high school players drop because players aren't they're not going
• 48:46
Speaker 2: to want to play high school because they were playing
• 48:48
Speaker 2: they've signed with MLS.
• 48:49
Speaker 1: And a bigger level. Then yeah, that's.
• 48:52
Speaker 2: That's where the quality of play I think has gone down.
• 48:57
Speaker 1: All right. Now, One other thing is you talk about
• 49:02
Speaker 1: these kids and how they're gonna make the next step,
• 49:06
Speaker 1: But how do you sort of say, well, no, before
• 49:10
Speaker 1: you get there, not humble them, but how do you
• 49:13
Speaker 1: get into their mind no, work level by level, don't
• 49:16
Speaker 1: jump to that next level. I mean there's got to
• 49:18
Speaker 1: be some kind of humbling or whatever you want to
• 49:21
  Speaker 1: say there.
• 49:22
Speaker 2: That player I just mentioned that went to MLS next.
• 49:24
Speaker 2: I remember before he told me, you know, we were
• 49:27
Speaker 2: we were in scrimmages before our seasons started, our state
• 49:31
Speaker 2: league season started a couple of years ago, and we
• 49:35
Speaker 2: just had you know, he brought it up for me
• 49:37
Speaker 2: for the first time as possibility. So we had a
• 49:40
Speaker 2: little heart to heart. But this is you have to
• 49:43
Speaker 2: be careful. You should consider having an agent who will
• 49:49
Speaker 2: watch out for you, that has experience by the way
• 49:52
Speaker 2: you need to help you let me know because I
• 49:54
Speaker 2: remember now, I worked on the recruiting side on both
• 49:57
Speaker 2: angles when I was in coaching at high scho level.
• 50:01
Speaker 2: I would work on trying to get my better players
• 50:03
Speaker 2: into college when we could, and then on the college side,
• 50:06
Speaker 2: it was trying to go after the better high school
• 50:09
Speaker 2: players to get them. So there's I've got experience all
• 50:14
Speaker 2: around on how to work this, and I hope the
• 50:17
Speaker 2: heck that parents are smart enough to be able to
• 50:21
Speaker 2: take things easy and not just be directed based on
• 50:26
Speaker 2: that male ego with here's a contract. Oh sign it,
• 50:31
Speaker 2: careful man, That's what I told this kid. Careful, all right.
• 50:35
Speaker 1: I gotta ask you this because I feel like we've
• 50:37
Speaker 1: talked about the minorities and how we want to make
• 50:40
Speaker 1: life more accessible to those who are minorities. Right, So
• 50:45
Speaker 1: I want to say about soccer as a coach, if
• 50:47
Speaker 1: all I get to duty to make it accessible to
• 50:50
Speaker 1: the inner city, to the parents and the kids that
• 50:53
Speaker 1: may not afford the clique or the soccer ball, how
• 50:55
Speaker 1: do we do that? How do we make it more
• 50:56
Speaker 1: accessible for kids that may not have the financial means?
• 50:59
Speaker 2: Do all this break down the stigma of a kid
• 51:02
Speaker 2: having to wear two hundred and fifty or three hundred
• 51:04
Speaker 2: dollars cleats. I gave a speech. It's in the towards
• 51:09
Speaker 2: the end of the book when we the club, everybody
• 51:14
Speaker 2: got together to review their season and and there was
• 51:17
Speaker 2: over a thousand people in this auditorium where we were,
• 51:20
Speaker 2: and I got up on stage and I locked the
• 51:22
Speaker 2: microphone into my hand and I talked about my way
• 51:26
Speaker 2: of coaching is probably considered, you know, old school. Everybody
• 51:30
Speaker 2: could used a little bit of old school. And back then,
• 51:34
Speaker 2: you know, our shorts were short, and we had one
• 51:37
Speaker 2: color cleat, you know, and you didn't have to have
• 51:40
Speaker 2: all of this. So trying to break down that stigma,
• 51:43
Speaker 2: I think is important, you.
• 51:45
Speaker 1: Know, SMA, That's what I'm talking about.
• 51:47
Speaker 2: Yeah, we've got to break the ship down. But I
• 51:50
Speaker 2: don't think it's being helped by all the high level
• 51:56
Speaker 2: expectations things. I would if I were to go about
• 52:00
Speaker 2: it coaches college level Alex, I'd be looking at not
• 52:04
Speaker 2: necessarily just going to USA Cup in Minneapolis, where all
• 52:07
Speaker 2: the top players are going down to Chicago and some
• 52:09
Speaker 2: of the bigger turns. I want to find some of
• 52:12
Speaker 2: the grassroots, you know, send me some video. Let me. See.
• 52:16
Speaker 2: You know, if you don't think tell me why rough
• 52:18
Speaker 2: type of guy? You know, yeah, shit, give me. I
• 52:21
Speaker 2: had a friend of mine once it said, give me
• 52:24
Speaker 2: eleven orphan kids, I'll beat you because they have a desire. Yeah,
• 52:30
Speaker 2: I think that's what I would go after.
• 52:33
Speaker 1: Well, I consent, you have a desire to tell your story,
• 52:38
Speaker 1: to change the narrative a lot, and maybe open up
• 52:42
Speaker 1: the game of soccer. By the way, when you're not
• 52:45
Speaker 1: talking soccer, what's on your mind? I feel like you're
• 52:47
Speaker 1: a little political there when you need to be. And
• 52:48
Speaker 1: then you got a little bit of news and y
• 52:51
Speaker 1: and other any other things when you're not talking about
• 52:53
Speaker 1: soccer that fires you up.
• 52:56
Speaker 2: Man. There's so much going on with the book. I'm
• 52:58
Speaker 2: just so freaking busy with the book. But you know
• 53:02
Speaker 2: there are whenever I'm checking things out and I go
• 53:07
Speaker 2: looking for stories or information, I look at three different categories.
• 53:11
Speaker 2: One is disabled, one is inspirational, and the other one
• 53:16
Speaker 2: is soccer. So I branch off and that's those are
• 53:19
Speaker 2: the target areas that we're trying to hit with the book,
• 53:21
Speaker 2: and those areas I want to try to have influence on,
• 53:24
Speaker 2: you know, see if we can help out because through inspiration,
• 53:28
Speaker 2: covers everything. But then you have the disabled community in
• 53:30
  Speaker 2: the soccer community.
• 53:31
Speaker 1: I as you have a microphone, are going to a podcast,
• 53:33
Speaker 1: I feel like you got a studio set up there
• 53:35
Speaker 1: for you to do your own pod.
• 53:36
Speaker 2: Yeah. My wife helped me recently on trying to put
• 53:40
Speaker 2: some stuff together to try to make you know you
• 53:42
Speaker 2: got marketing. You got to have you know, the book cover,
• 53:46
Speaker 2: the chip that's that's kind of me in reflection, and
• 53:50
Speaker 2: then some of the trinkets.
• 53:52
Speaker 1: I love it. It's a great setup you got. Well, Scott.
• 53:55
Speaker 1: I so appreciate you coming on the show today, and
• 53:57
Speaker 1: I hope you have a great Thanksgiving week. Big football
• 54:01
Speaker 1: NFL day tomorrow, you big NFL guy. You're gonna watch
• 54:03
  Speaker 1: or what yep?
• 54:05
Speaker 2: Packers playing noon against Allons. Yeah, I've got a fantasy
• 54:11
Speaker 2: team that's I'm going up against the other guy I'm
• 54:13
Speaker 2: tied with try to get in the playoffs.
• 54:14
Speaker 1: So yeah, right, Packer's on a weird game last Sunday,
• 54:17
Speaker 1: but you know they're they're on the right track.
• 54:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, see what happens tomorrow.
• 54:21
Speaker 1: All right, Scott. Well, I'm so glad we had this
• 54:23
Speaker 1: time and I'm gonna have you back on as the
• 54:25
Speaker 1: book gets published and progresses and really launches.
• 54:29
Speaker 2: Yeah, let's stay in touch.
• 54:30
Speaker 1: Okay, definitely, thank you, Scott, all right, thanks you take
• 54:33
Speaker 1: care of me. Scott Martin on the One Legup alex
