- 0:00Speaker 1: And there are people who outwardly do a whole lot
- 0:02Speaker 1: worse than you do who are going to go to heaven.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sanctification is a process. It is evidence of our justification.
- 0:14Speaker 1: It is not means of our justification. We must understand that.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We have to understand that. We have to grasp that.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Listen to this. This is from the We believe that
- 0:31Speaker 1: true faith being wrought in man by the hearing of
- 0:34Speaker 1: the word of God and the operation of the Holy
- 0:36Speaker 1: Ghost doth regenerate and make him a new man, causing
- 0:40Speaker 1: him to live a new life and freeing him from
- 0:43Speaker 1: the bondage of sin. Therefore, it is so far from
- 0:46Speaker 1: being true that this justifying faith makes men remiss in
- 0:51Speaker 1: a pious and holy life. That's so far from true.
- 0:54Speaker 1: If you're truly justified, you're going to be sanctified. Sanctification
- 1:00Speaker 1: follows justification as inexorably as growth follows birth. Kids born,
- 1:06Speaker 1: kids going to grow. It's going to happen. May not
- 1:09Speaker 1: get as big as everybody else, kids going to grow.
- 1:11Speaker 1: It's going to happen. It's going to happen. So to
- 1:18Speaker 1: answer the question, well, does that mean we can just
- 1:19Speaker 1: live any way we want to live? No, you don't
- 1:21Speaker 1: understand justification. Nothing could be further from the truth. If
- 1:25Speaker 1: we are truly justified, that's the only way we have
- 1:29Speaker 1: access to a holy and righteous life. Sanctification grows out
- 1:38Speaker 1: of justification. It's the fruit of justification. Think about justification
- 1:43Speaker 1: being the seed that's planted and sanctification growing out of it.
- 1:49Speaker 1: It's going to happen. Listen to this. That on the contrary,
- 1:53Speaker 1: without it, that is without true justification and true sanctification,
- 1:58Speaker 1: without it, they would never do anything out of love
- 2:01Speaker 1: to God, but only out of self-love and fear of damnation.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Let me say this. Here's what the Belgian Confession just said.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Without true justification and true biblical sanctification, the only things
- 2:17Speaker 1: we will ever do we will do either out of
- 2:20Speaker 1: pride or fear. If you don't understand justification, you will
- 2:29Speaker 1: go through the Sermon on the Mount finding things for
- 2:31Speaker 1: yourself to do out of pride and fear. That's all
- 2:36Speaker 1: you got. Without justification and sanctification, that's all you got.
- 2:41Speaker 1: All you've got is pride and fear. I do this, this, this, this,
- 2:46Speaker 1: and this so that I can say this is what
- 2:48Speaker 1: I do. I don't do this, this, this, so that
- 2:50Speaker 1: I can say it's not what I do. That's pride.
- 2:55Speaker 1: It's rank pride. Or it's fear. I'm scared of not
- 3:02Speaker 1: going to heaven when I die. So I work really
- 3:05Speaker 1: hard to find the things that I'm supposed to do
- 3:07Speaker 1: so that I don't get to heaven. And God says, yeah,
- 3:09Speaker 1: you missed one. That's a complete lack of understanding of
- 3:14Speaker 1: the doctrine of justification. That's a complete lack of understanding
- 3:19Speaker 1: of the doctrine of sanctification. By grace are you saved.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Through faith. And that not of yourselves. It is a
- 3:29Speaker 1: gift of God. Lest anyone should boast. There's pride. Pride's gone.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Boasting's gone. It's absolutely gone. I want you to see
- 3:42Speaker 1: something here. Look with me in the book of Romans.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Romans chapter 3. This is an extensive passage, but we
- 3:48Speaker 1: have to get this if we're going to understand Christian
- 3:51Speaker 1: ethics and the Sermon on the Mount. We have to.
- 3:53Speaker 1: We've been through this before, and we'll probably be through
- 3:56Speaker 1: this again. And again, and not, no probably, we will
- 4:00Speaker 1: be through this again and again and again and again.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Because we are hardwired for works righteousness, okay? We're hardwired
- 4:10Speaker 1: for legalism. Every last one of us, we're hardwired for it.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We're hardwired for going to the scriptures and doing one
- 4:18Speaker 1: of two things, either in pride, finding the stuff that
- 4:21Speaker 1: we do and saying, yes, you see, I'm a Christian
- 4:23Speaker 1: because I do, or finding things that we don't and
- 4:26Speaker 1: out of fear, promising that we will. That's why most
- 4:31Speaker 1: services in most churches, you know, what do we do?
- 4:34Speaker 1: What do we do at the end of it? You know,
- 4:37Speaker 1: give people a chance to come up and run and cry,
- 4:39Speaker 1: you know, I feel guilty. I want to rededicate my life.
- 4:49Speaker 1: That crawls all over me. Makes me want to spit
- 4:52Speaker 1: every time I hear that. Rededicate my life. Can I
- 4:56Speaker 1: tell you how doctrinally corrupt that is? Number one, the
- 5:02Speaker 1: act of going up and rededicating my life. First of all,
- 5:09Speaker 1: that's not what we're called to do. are called the
- 5:12Speaker 1: repentance and faith, not rededication. Secondly, the act of rededicating
- 5:18Speaker 1: my life means that what I did at first was
- 5:21Speaker 1: not repent and place my faith in Jesus Christ as
- 5:24Speaker 1: the only ground for my salvation, but I dedicated myself
- 5:28Speaker 1: to trying as hard as I could to live like
- 5:30Speaker 1: he wanted me to live. That's not true justification. So
- 5:33Speaker 1: using the term rededication actually undermines the very doctrine of
- 5:38Speaker 1: justification itself. It's corrupt. It's corrupt. You don't go to
- 5:46Speaker 1: heaven because you dedicated your life to Christ. You go
- 5:50Speaker 1: to heaven because you were justified by the finished work
- 5:53Speaker 1: of Jesus Christ and his finished work alone. Alone. Here's
- 6:00Speaker 1: the other problem with the whole concept of rededication. I
- 6:02Speaker 1: tried really hard and I failed. So now I'm saying
- 6:07Speaker 1: this time I'm going to try harder. That's not gospel living, people.
- 6:16Speaker 1: And I said to myself first, that's not the gospel.
- 6:22Speaker 1: It's just not. The gospel is about the finished work
- 6:27Speaker 1: of Christ. So as we go through the Sermon on
- 6:29Speaker 1: the Mount, this is not about heaping guilt on Christians
- 6:33Speaker 1: for not having done enough. It's not it. We do that,
- 6:38Speaker 1: we completely miss the doctrine of justification altogether. And what
- 6:43Speaker 1: we do, we will do either out of pride or
- 6:46Speaker 1: out of fear. One of those two things. That's all
- 6:53Speaker 1: we got.
