- 0:29Speaker 1: Welcome to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia Sports Table
- 0:31Speaker 1: podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show
- 0:35Speaker 1: in the world, over thirteen years strong. Got a great
- 0:38Speaker 1: discussion coming your way on Table Talk, as we do
- 0:41Speaker 1: every week, always appreciate our guests taking the time. That's
- 0:44Speaker 1: no different. This week we've got from Broadstreetockey dot Com
- 0:48Speaker 1: and he's also you can also hear his voice over
- 0:49Speaker 1: on the broad Street Hockey podcast platform as well. I'm
- 0:54Speaker 1: subscribed over on Apple Podcast. We got the one and
- 0:57Speaker 1: only Ryan Gilbert, my friend. Thank you so much for
- 0:59Speaker 1: taking the time here.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Of course, it's always a good time to come on
- 1:03Speaker 2: here with you. Talk some Shane Gossis Bear as always
- 1:05Speaker 2: relations to Shane Gotsis Bear the Stanley Copley I'm doing here,
- 1:09Speaker 2: but it's been a good summer enough Flyer stuff to
- 1:12Speaker 2: talk about and go on, so always a good time
- 1:14Speaker 2: to come.
- 1:14Speaker 1: On with you. Jesff. I love how you mentioned Shane
- 1:16Speaker 1: Gossis Fair. I tell people and we mentioned it before.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I still have my fiftieth anniversary Flyers jersey and it's
- 1:22Speaker 1: a Shane Gossas Fair jersey. I will continue to wear
- 1:24Speaker 1: that for the rest of my life. I really Will
- 1:26Speaker 1: it's a classic.
- 1:27Speaker 2: It's a classic.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Jury absolutely absolutely look all right. To get into this
- 1:32Speaker 1: Flyers off season, you know, we've been talking about it
- 1:34Speaker 1: a bit on this podcast platform, but really wanted to
- 1:36Speaker 1: dive into some contracts right off the bat and what
- 1:39Speaker 1: they're going to mean for this team, in this organization
- 1:41Speaker 1: long term. If it was interesting how Jason over at
- 1:45Speaker 1: broad Street Hockey wrote a good piece this week about
- 1:47Speaker 1: how missing out on Leo Carlson you know, doesn't ruin
- 1:50Speaker 1: the Flyers off season. It was a little disappointing for sure,
- 1:55Speaker 1: but this Flyers off season has not been terrible by
- 1:58Speaker 1: any stretch of the imagination. Ryan and I wanted to
- 2:00Speaker 1: get your thoughts and get into the Tyson Forrester extension
- 2:04Speaker 1: eight years, fifty six point eight million dollars. With regard
- 2:08Speaker 1: to this extension, I think it's a positive. I think
- 2:10Speaker 1: it's going to be a key component of what this
- 2:13Speaker 1: team can be in the future as Tyson Forster continues
- 2:17Speaker 1: to develop his game in various ways. What do you
- 2:19Speaker 1: think this means for the team long term?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Here, I completely agree. I think it's a fantastic contract.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Danny Brayer, the Flyers kind of just snuck it in
- 2:28Speaker 2: there on July first, no one really got to talk
- 2:30Speaker 2: about it, got to complain about Noah Chari got to
- 2:32Speaker 2: planning not to do anything else than the Leo Carlson thing.
- 2:35Speaker 2: But Tyson Forrester, you know, twenty twenty four years old,
- 2:38Speaker 2: he's right, he's going to be one of these core
- 2:40Speaker 2: players for the team. If this team becomes a contender,
- 2:43Speaker 2: he's going to be a core player. And as the
- 2:45Speaker 2: salary cap rises here, that seven point one million dollar
- 2:49Speaker 2: cap hit is going to look better and better, and
- 2:52Speaker 2: it's really a win win for the player in the team. Now,
- 2:54Speaker 2: Tyson Forster, we saw the injury last year. Anything with
- 2:58Speaker 2: with joints, you know, knees, shoulders, elbows, whatever, you know,
- 3:01Speaker 2: they can come back and nag you there a little bit.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But Tyson Forrester has already had a twenty five goal season.
- 3:07Speaker 2: He's averaging twenty five goals per eighty two games. So
- 3:11Speaker 2: even if he is just like a good third line winger,
- 3:14Speaker 2: which I think is his absolute floor, you know, that's
- 3:16Speaker 2: not a bad contract for that, and he could become
- 3:19Speaker 2: with the right line mate's a top line guy. I
- 3:21Speaker 2: think he's probably a second line guy on a good
- 3:25Speaker 2: contending team. But at seven point one million, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 2: sticker shock a little bit as we get used to
- 3:30Speaker 2: this new salary cap. But I think he's the perfect
- 3:33Speaker 2: encapsulation of this rebuild too. Like he's shown some flashes,
- 3:37Speaker 2: had some bad luck, but all in all, it's you're
- 3:39Speaker 2: positive about him, absolutely yeah. And it shows that he
- 3:43Speaker 2: is untouchable. It's come out before like, Okay, the Flyers
- 3:45Speaker 2: don't want to trade Forester. He's untouchable, but they sign
- 3:48Speaker 2: him to that contract. I don't think there's a way
- 3:50Speaker 2: they moved him now.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Absolutely there's a belief in him. I mean this contract
- 3:54Speaker 1: solidifies that belief, I think, and moving along in terms
- 3:58Speaker 1: of believing in players of the long term. Dan Vladar,
- 4:02Speaker 1: the you know, star goolie on this team. He needed
- 4:05Speaker 1: to be extended. Danny Brier has done that with a
- 4:08Speaker 1: new five year extension that kicks in actually next year.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I honestly thought, I'm glad that this happened, But I
- 4:14Speaker 1: thought Danny Brier and company they were going to give
- 4:17Speaker 1: Ladar another year, you know, to see if that might
- 4:20Speaker 1: be the best move. What happens if he gets injured.
- 4:22Speaker 1: That's always out there in the back of front office's minds.
- 4:25Speaker 1: But Danny Brier wanted to get the best dollar value possible.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I think he certainly did that. What are your thoughts
- 4:31Speaker 1: on the Dan Vladar extension and even what he inevitably
- 4:35Speaker 1: means long term and down the road for this organization.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm also cautiously optimistic about this. When I first
- 4:42Speaker 2: came out, like why are we signing Ladar already?
- 4:44Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:45Speaker 2: One good season, one great season, you know, a shoutout
- 4:47Speaker 2: to win a playoff series against the Penguins there, But
- 4:51Speaker 2: it is just one season, and I, like you, I
- 4:54Speaker 2: would like to I would like to see them, you know,
- 4:56Speaker 2: go into October, even December, make sure he still has
- 4:59Speaker 2: this even if you have to pay six seven million
- 5:03Speaker 2: instead of five and a half. Yeah, to have that,
- 5:05Speaker 2: to have that confidence that it's going to be more
- 5:07Speaker 2: than one year. But then I looked at, you know,
- 5:10Speaker 2: goalie contracts around the league, and I think this puts
- 5:12Speaker 2: them around like fifteenth to twentieth in the league, and
- 5:16Speaker 2: that's probably where he is. He's not going to be
- 5:19Speaker 2: a top five, top ten goalie for the long haul,
- 5:21Speaker 2: like of Aasilevski or a Soroken, but col give this
- 5:24Speaker 2: team a chance to win and I think just his
- 5:27Speaker 2: calming presence on the ice, is presidence in the locker
- 5:29Speaker 2: room really made it hard for the front office. They
- 5:32Speaker 2: kind of got back into her corner where they, yeah,
- 5:34Speaker 2: we gotta gotta keep this guy happy. He's been a
- 5:37Speaker 2: big part of it. So five years it's a long time,
- 5:39Speaker 2: but five and a half million is not too long.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Do you think there is Do you think there's a
- 5:44Speaker 1: psychological aspect to this? Because I was thinking about this
- 5:47Speaker 1: as well, and what I mean is the goalie position
- 5:49Speaker 1: on this Flyers team and the absolute trials and tribulations
- 5:53Speaker 1: when you look at the fact that Steve Mason was
- 5:55Speaker 1: probably one of the most solid goalies for this organization
- 5:59Speaker 1: in quite some when he was on the team, and
- 6:02Speaker 1: he wasn't necessarily the most perfect goalie in the world.
- 6:04Speaker 1: There really aren't that many. But I wonder if there's
- 6:08Speaker 1: a psychological aspect of Wow, we saw what we saw
- 6:11Speaker 1: from Dan Vladdar this season, we got to just lock
- 6:13Speaker 1: him up because we can't have a situation like we
- 6:15Speaker 1: had with like Brisgola for years ago, years and years ago.
- 6:19Speaker 1: You know, I wonder if there's a psychological aspect of
- 6:22Speaker 1: this when it comes to the actual goalie position itself.
- 6:25Speaker 1: It's something I've been thinking about.
- 6:26Speaker 2: That's a great point there. I think there has to
- 6:29Speaker 2: be I think anytime you're talking about goalies in Philadelphia,
- 6:32Speaker 2: it's going to be until we get another solid one,
- 6:35Speaker 2: and even after that they're okay. Was it a fluke
- 6:37Speaker 2: a We're going to go back to having all these
- 6:39Speaker 2: different goalies. And Freere himself, you know, he saw Michael Layton,
- 6:43Speaker 2: he saw the Priscala Babrowski stuff as a player. So yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 2: I would rather take a slight a slight risk with
- 6:52Speaker 2: Flatar than rather, you know, piss him off and let
- 6:54Speaker 2: him walk and then go start this cycle all over again.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Exactly. All right, Well, moving along here before we have
- 7:00Speaker 1: to get to our first break here, speaking of the
- 7:03Speaker 1: goalie position, I do like what Danny Brier did in
- 7:06Speaker 1: terms of the backup goalie position moving forward here, getting
- 7:09Speaker 1: rid of sam Erson, bringing in Joseph Wall via that
- 7:13Speaker 1: trade with Toronto. Ryan Wall's numbers been a lot better
- 7:18Speaker 1: than sam Erson's in terms of save percentage, of course,
- 7:21Speaker 1: over the past two years. I'm just wondering, like, what
- 7:24Speaker 1: kind of backup do you think Wall is going to
- 7:26Speaker 1: be for Dan Vladar might we see him earlier in
- 7:30Speaker 1: the season to make sure that Vladar is a little
- 7:32Speaker 1: more fresher come, you know, potentially playoff time. What are
- 7:35Speaker 1: your thoughts here about this particular goalie situation in the
- 7:38Speaker 1: backup here.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I really like this tandem. I think there's a
- 7:42Speaker 2: high ceiling here where it can be one of the
- 7:44Speaker 2: better tandem's, true tandems in the league when you take
- 7:47Speaker 2: out those, you know, top top goalies. Because sam Erson
- 7:50Speaker 2: loved him, I wish he was better here. But I've
- 7:53Speaker 2: viewed Joseph Wall going into this season kind of how
- 7:56Speaker 2: we viewed Ladar going into last season. We're like, Okay,
- 7:59Speaker 2: if Ladar can be the one B, maybe take over
- 8:01Speaker 2: as a starter, that's good news. And now we have
- 8:04Speaker 2: Ladar knowing he can be a one A. We're not
- 8:07Speaker 2: We're not risking it on Airson and and we have
- 8:10Speaker 2: Joseph Wall, who his he had this his worst season
- 8:13Speaker 2: this past year, eight ninety eight save percentage. I would
- 8:16Speaker 2: love that from a Flyers backup goalie. Yeah, his safercientage
- 8:18Speaker 2: for his career is nine oh six. Yeah, his his
- 8:21Speaker 2: floor is sam Rison's ceiling pretty much. So the Flyers,
- 8:24Speaker 2: you know, no big splashy move yet this offseason, but
- 8:27Speaker 2: they really raised their floor with this. Joseph wall Trade
- 8:30Speaker 2: absolutely did.
- 8:31Speaker 1: All right, folks, we are going to take a break,
- 8:33Speaker 1: but before we do that, I want to let Ryan
- 8:36Speaker 1: get some promos out here.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Let him let let him know where.
- 8:39Speaker 1: You can find him on the socials out there again,
- 8:42Speaker 1: Broadstreet Hockey dot Com. I know that's where you're at.
- 8:44Speaker 1: You're doing some other stuff as well. Let folks know
- 8:46Speaker 1: where they can find you. Man.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah, Broadstreet Hockey. I don't like to brag too much
- 8:50Speaker 2: that pap myself on the back, but the Broadstreet Hockey
- 8:52Speaker 2: YouTube channel really proud of what we're doing over there.
- 8:54Speaker 2: So go subscribe there. If you haven't type of content
- 8:57Speaker 2: you're getting on the website, you know, it's high qual
- 9:00Speaker 2: content on the YouTube, the podcast as well. And I'm
- 9:04Speaker 2: tagged on socials in this post. You can follow me there.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Sounds good, Yeah, sounds good. All right, folks are gonna
- 9:09Speaker 1: take a break. When we get back. We got more
- 9:10Speaker 1: Flyers offseason talk coming your way. All right, we are
- 9:15Speaker 1: back with our good friend Ryan Gilbert from Broadstreet Hockey
- 9:19Speaker 1: dot Com. And as we're moving along with this conversation
- 9:22Speaker 1: about the Flyers off season. Where they maybe going during
- 9:25Speaker 1: the twenty twenty six twenty twenty seven season. That's just
- 9:29Speaker 1: around the corner. I swear it's gonna be here before
- 9:31Speaker 1: we know it, you know. I think the big question
- 9:34Speaker 1: is I don't think it's gonna happen this year, but
- 9:37Speaker 1: when and where will the Flyers get that dominant top
- 9:40Speaker 1: line center of the future. It's what we've been talking
- 9:43Speaker 1: about four years. At this point, I keep thinking, are
- 9:47Speaker 1: we gonna have to wait another year? Are we gonna
- 9:48Speaker 1: have to wait two years before this club is really
- 9:50Speaker 1: able to secure that critical talent for potential future Stanley
- 9:55Speaker 1: Cup playoff runs? Ryan and I just wonder where that
- 9:59Speaker 1: guy's gonna come from. And we certainly don't have a
- 10:01Speaker 1: crystal ball in front of us for sure. We don't
- 10:03Speaker 1: know for certain where it's gonna happen and when it's
- 10:05Speaker 1: gonna happen. But you know, I've had some day dreams
- 10:08Speaker 1: about this here and there before that it may come
- 10:11Speaker 1: in a potential trade at some point down the road
- 10:14Speaker 1: or some other acquisition. What are your thoughts on where
- 10:18Speaker 1: this guy eventually may end up coming from, because it
- 10:21Speaker 1: has to happen at some point.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Yeah, A trade really does seem like the most likely seek.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Dylan Larkin asking out he doesn't necessarily want to come
- 10:30Speaker 2: to Photophia yet, But in a year or two Flyers
- 10:33Speaker 2: make the playoffs again, they make some noise, can maybe
- 10:35Speaker 2: get a Dylan Larkin, Robert Thomas, a guy like that.
- 10:38Speaker 2: So a trade unfortunately does seem like the most likely
- 10:42Speaker 2: option to get a top line center, because the Flyers
- 10:46Speaker 2: are built with their depth, they have so many wingers,
- 10:49Speaker 2: they have so many young centers, and Luchenko and Nesbitt
- 10:52Speaker 2: and Bergland and these guys who teams that are gonna
- 10:55Speaker 2: be rebuilding might want. But also internally, the more I
- 10:59Speaker 2: think about it, the more I could see Trevor Zegres
- 11:02Speaker 2: becoming that first line center. Oh give him, you give
- 11:04Speaker 2: him two great wingers. He played well with Dvorak, played
- 11:07Speaker 2: well with with Tippit and Connectney. But if you he's
- 11:10Speaker 2: twenty four going on twenty five, that's when players usually
- 11:13Speaker 2: hit their prime. And we just saw the Hurricanes whin
- 11:16Speaker 2: the Stanley Cup with Sebastianajo as their one seed. You
- 11:19Speaker 2: don't need a McDavid, you don't need them McKinnon. McKinnon
- 11:22Speaker 2: won the Cup with mccarr and rant and a great team.
- 11:25Speaker 2: You don't need these top heavy teams like the Leafs
- 11:28Speaker 2: failed with. You need teams built with depth. And I
- 11:31Speaker 2: think if Martone and Mitschkoff and Tippett keep going, Zegris
- 11:35Speaker 2: could be that one. See, so there is hope for that,
- 11:38Speaker 2: but but the trade is still probably more likely.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I don't know. I I think about Trevor
- 11:43Speaker 1: Zegress coming here to this team and thinking he was
- 11:45Speaker 1: going to be that center. And you know, we saw
- 11:49Speaker 1: Rick Hockett saying, nah, hold my beer are not so fast,
- 11:53Speaker 1: and you know, to get him maybe the season starting
- 11:57Speaker 1: out at you know, one Sea. Look, I wouldn't mind it,
- 12:02Speaker 1: but we saw how productive he was on the wing
- 12:04Speaker 1: that I kind of say to myself, I don't want
- 12:07Speaker 1: to ruin a good thing here, you know. I mean,
- 12:10Speaker 1: do you see it that way or do you? Are
- 12:11Speaker 1: you among those that say, you know what, let's give
- 12:14Speaker 1: it a try, because we do have so many wingers here.
- 12:17Speaker 2: A little bit of both. Not to play fency fencern,
- 12:20Speaker 2: but like I do want to see him at center.
- 12:22Speaker 2: I want to see him at center. Give him Martone
- 12:25Speaker 2: and connect me, like, see what that line can do
- 12:27Speaker 2: because you do have all these wingers, and you have Devorak,
- 12:30Speaker 2: you have Kates, and you have Victorier at center. So
- 12:33Speaker 2: you could move Zegres to wing, but then you're putting
- 12:36Speaker 2: two of Tippett like you're putting someone else down the lineup.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Then you got bumping Barkie. So there's a lot of
- 12:41Speaker 2: moving pieces. But I would just say put Zegres at center,
- 12:45Speaker 2: even if you know he's not gonna win a ton
- 12:47Speaker 2: of face offs, that is his one thing. But you
- 12:49Speaker 2: don't have to win a ton of face offs if
- 12:51Speaker 2: you can still put up a point per game as
- 12:53Speaker 2: a center.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely. And look, you know, when we're talking about
- 12:56Speaker 1: veterans on this team, talking about Trevor Ziegres as well,
- 13:00Speaker 1: the Flyers have less than one week to sign not
- 13:03Speaker 1: only Trevor Zegris but Jamie Drysdale before arbitration kicks in here.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I mean, do you see any potential hiccups happening here
- 13:11Speaker 1: with these two players who are I don't know, pretty
- 13:13Speaker 1: important in terms of the team's future here? What are
- 13:16Speaker 1: you thinking?
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think they're gonna get to arbitration.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Arbitration.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Arbitration is really ugly. I know, we saw that with
- 13:23Speaker 2: like Ryan Howard, like back back way when like it's
- 13:25Speaker 2: just going in there, everyone just just slings stuff at
- 13:29Speaker 2: one another and like try to say like, Okay, you're
- 13:31Speaker 2: not worth this, No I am worth this. Just in
- 13:33Speaker 2: back and forth, and the thing with Trevor Zegras's agent
- 13:36Speaker 2: like h he also represents Dylan Larkin, Jason Robertson, Patrick Kane,
- 13:41Speaker 2: Claude drew E, Lias Patterson, like a bunch of guys
- 13:44Speaker 2: that still have work to get done. With Jamie Drysdale.
- 13:48Speaker 2: We saw some reports I forget from who if it
- 13:50Speaker 2: was reputable or not, that it was like four or
- 13:52Speaker 2: four years, six and a half million, two point two
- 13:55Speaker 2: five million in that range. I was worried when they
- 13:59Speaker 2: didn't sign them in early July that I saw. Then
- 14:02Speaker 2: I saw the offer sheet, I was like, okay, they
- 14:04Speaker 2: can't quite back them myself into a corner. So I
- 14:07Speaker 2: don't think it's gonna go to arbitration. I don't think
- 14:08Speaker 2: there's gonna be any ill will. And we have to
- 14:11Speaker 2: remember this isn't just this isn't just Trevor's Egres sitting
- 14:13Speaker 2: down with Danny Briery, Trevor's eegres is agent doing all
- 14:16Speaker 2: of it. He's like, all right, I'm gonna get the
- 14:18Speaker 2: best deal I can for you. They'll probably sign later
- 14:20Speaker 2: this week, I would imagine. I don't think we're going
- 14:23Speaker 2: into the arbitration.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I don't think either. I just wanted to bring it
- 14:26Speaker 1: up just in case, because I swear, in the world
- 14:29Speaker 1: of sports anymore, you never know what the hell is
- 14:31Speaker 1: gonna happen. Jalen Brown is now in the Philadelphia seventy
- 14:34Speaker 1: six ers. For God's sake, You've got Jalen Hurtz who's
- 14:38Speaker 1: just ranked outside like the top fifteen quarterbacks in the NFL,
- 14:41Speaker 1: which is ridiculous in my opinion. Weird stuff happens in
- 14:45Speaker 1: the world of sports, so you never know. You absolutely
- 14:48Speaker 1: never know. So all right, buddy, I do want to
- 14:51Speaker 1: let you go, but beforehand, you know, I'm not sure
- 14:55Speaker 1: if Danny Breer and company, if they still need to
- 14:58Speaker 1: get certain things done during this off I think we
- 15:00Speaker 1: would like to see. Look, I mean, this team's got
- 15:02Speaker 1: a lot of depth in various areas, but what do
- 15:05Speaker 1: you think that Danny Brier and company really needs to
- 15:09Speaker 1: do this offseason to get ready to roll as the
- 15:12Speaker 1: regular season is going to be here before.
- 15:13Speaker 2: We know it. Yeah, I mean the most important thing
- 15:16Speaker 2: is getting those zigris in Drysdale contract you have to take.
- 15:19Speaker 2: You have to take care of internal business, to clean
- 15:22Speaker 2: up your own own house before you go outside to
- 15:24Speaker 2: try to try to improve it there. But beyond that,
- 15:27Speaker 2: I would like to see a power play quarterback get
- 15:29Speaker 2: in here. John Carlson, I understand, wanted to go to Tampa.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Morgan Riley is a guy who might be out there,
- 15:36Speaker 2: but I don't love his contract numbers. Yeah, and then
- 15:39Speaker 2: you know there are a home run derby to night
- 15:40Speaker 2: here recording this on Monday, so there could be a
- 15:42Speaker 2: few home rules swings for Danny Brier. Elias Patterson's name
- 15:46Speaker 2: is out there. I don't think it would happen. I
- 15:48Speaker 2: don't don't think I would like him here either. His
- 15:50Speaker 2: name is out there. Dylan Larkin. I would like to
