Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What Are You Holding Onto That You Can Let Go?
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, it's me Emily. It's five minute Friday. I'm so
- 0:25Speaker 1: thankful it's Friday.
- 0:26Speaker 2: To be real, though, this week was myself imposed let's
- 0:31Speaker 2: call it a vacation week. Yes, I am at home
- 0:35Speaker 2: in Brooklyn, but for a while I was hoping to
- 0:38Speaker 2: take a vacation, an actual one away from Brooklyn.
- 0:42Speaker 1: This week.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I dreamed of booking something to Italy, doing coast, literally
- 0:47Speaker 2: posting up at some hotel for six days and drinking
- 0:52Speaker 2: spritses and who knows what.
- 0:54Speaker 1: And I got to this point, not all that long ago,
- 0:57Speaker 1: where when it.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Came time to pull the trigger on booking it, I
- 1:02Speaker 2: just decided that I wanted to save the money and spend.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Some time being in one place.
- 1:09Speaker 2: And so this week I allowed myself to summit extent
- 1:14Speaker 2: to take vacation aaa like, just do the things that
- 1:19Speaker 2: I wanted to do during the day, while also yes,
- 1:23Speaker 2: tending to my inbox a little bit, and of course
- 1:26Speaker 2: launching the pod and the newsletter and all the things
- 1:29Speaker 2: that I usually do. And to be real, it was really,
- 1:33Speaker 2: it was really delightful. That's not what I'm here to
- 1:37Speaker 2: talk to you about today. What I'm here to talk
- 1:38Speaker 2: to you about today is getting out of your head
- 1:42Speaker 2: and kind of realizing the magnitude of the things that
- 1:46Speaker 2: we allow to weigh us down. So let me let
- 1:51Speaker 2: me exemplify this. So I was sitting here at my
- 1:53Speaker 2: desk earlier, trying to figure out the right way to
- 1:57Speaker 2: respond to an email. I noticed that I was getting
- 2:01Speaker 2: really frustrated in that I was feeling just like this
- 2:05Speaker 2: pit in my stomach. I didn't know the right thing
- 2:08Speaker 2: to say. I was writing and rewriting it, and I
- 2:11Speaker 2: was just feeling that.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Feeling.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And a few minutes into sitting here and looking at
- 2:22Speaker 2: my MacBook, I got a text from a friend who
- 2:25Speaker 2: told me about some missed flight drama and connecting in
- 2:31Speaker 2: an an inconvenient place, but that didn't matter because he
- 2:35Speaker 2: was able to get home and be with his mother
- 2:40Speaker 2: for chemo. And I just sat here and I was like,
- 2:46Speaker 2: why are you letting something like this get you all
- 2:51Speaker 2: sorts of riled up?
- 2:52Speaker 1: Right?
- 2:53Speaker 2: Like, why are you getting worked up by something that's insignificant?
- 2:58Speaker 1: And I say this to.
- 3:03Speaker 2: A reel it in, right, maybe this story helps you
- 3:06Speaker 2: reel it in. But b also to caveat that it
- 3:12Speaker 2: is okay if you have a struggle and it's not
- 3:18Speaker 2: the worst thing on the planet. Like, am I entitled
- 3:21Speaker 2: to feel frustrated or worked up by some sort of
- 3:23Speaker 2: an email in my inbox?
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yes? I am. But I can also take perspective on whatever.
- 3:32Speaker 2: It is in my life that is making me feel
- 3:34Speaker 2: some kind of way and realize that more often than not,
- 3:38Speaker 2: it can be worse, and I've dealt with worse. It
- 3:43Speaker 2: goes back to that takeaway that I remember Alex silver
- 3:45Speaker 2: Fagan shared in her episode at the front half of
- 3:48Speaker 2: this year. It was her third episode on the show,
- 3:51Speaker 2: and I'll put in the show notes, but she reiterated
- 3:54Speaker 2: that we are not our feelings, and we have the
- 3:57Speaker 2: opportunity to respond to our feelings. And so the next
- 4:01Speaker 2: time that maybe you feel how I felt earlier today,
- 4:05Speaker 2: take a second and breathe and realize that it is
- 4:09Speaker 2: within our capacity to move forward in the best way
- 4:14Speaker 2: that we know how, and that eventually we'll get through it.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:21Speaker 2: My prompt for you this week are you letting something
- 4:25Speaker 2: in your life take up more space than it deserves?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Are you letting something in your life take up more
- 4:31Speaker 2: space than it deserves? And can you move forward if
- 4:36Speaker 2: you let that go? And now a listener question.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Hey, Emily, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.
- 4:45Speaker 3: So mine relates to the New York City Marathon. This
- 4:48Speaker 3: is my first time running it this year, and I
- 4:50Speaker 3: wanted to know how many friends do you typically have
- 4:54Speaker 3: stations in each borrow? Like you have two groups or
- 4:56Speaker 3: three groups? And then the second part is what do
- 4:59Speaker 3: you do have them hold? Do you each have them
- 5:01Speaker 3: hold a gelpack or water or gatorade? Maybe your favorite
- 5:06Speaker 3: snack for the run? Like what do you typically have
- 5:08Speaker 3: them hold? And then the fun my fun question for
- 5:11Speaker 3: you is your favorite brunch spot for after the race? Thanks?
- 5:16Speaker 1: Hey Aaron. Okay, three part question.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I feel like I get questions like this often, so
- 5:24Speaker 2: I'm not going to make it specific to the New
- 5:26Speaker 2: York City Marathon because and there's a reason, it's hard
- 5:30Speaker 2: to place people in every borough for the marathon. Typically speaking,
- 5:36Speaker 2: if someone knows New York, then they can get to
- 5:40Speaker 2: at least two to three different spots on the route
- 5:43Speaker 2: by taking the subway or riding a city bike. But
- 5:47Speaker 2: that really is for the person that feels really comfortable
- 5:49Speaker 2: navigating the city. What I will say, regardless of what
- 5:53Speaker 2: marathon you are running, is that it's smart to try
- 5:56Speaker 2: to have someone to look forward to, I would say
- 6:01Speaker 2: just as often as you take a gel. So typically speaking,
- 6:04Speaker 2: my advice is to take some sort of nutrition every
- 6:08Speaker 2: forty to forty five minutes. That would be ideal if
- 6:12Speaker 2: you could have someone to look forward to during that
- 6:15Speaker 2: time as well. Now, if you're running a race and
- 6:17Speaker 2: you know where someone is going to be, make sure
- 6:20Speaker 2: that you don't only know what mile marker or cross
- 6:24Speaker 2: street they will be on, but exactly what side of
- 6:28Speaker 2: the street they will be on. So, for instance, in
- 6:31Speaker 2: New York, if I am running up First Avenue coming
- 6:36Speaker 2: off of the Queensboro Bridge and I know that my
- 6:40Speaker 2: friend is going to be on sixty eighth and first,
- 6:45Speaker 2: I'm going to want to know if they are going
- 6:47Speaker 2: to be on the north side of the cross street
- 6:50Speaker 2: or the south side of the cross street, and if
- 6:53Speaker 2: they will be on Runners left or runners right. So
- 6:56Speaker 2: make sure to alleviate stress from everybody that you get
- 7:01Speaker 2: that down before you get going that morning. Also in
- 7:05Speaker 2: terms of like what they hold, I mean, really that's
- 7:07Speaker 2: up to you. I like to run with everything I'm
- 7:10Speaker 2: gonna need, which can be kind of difficult, but that's
- 7:13Speaker 2: why it's really critical to look for gear with a
- 7:16Speaker 2: lot of pockets, I have had a friend hold some
- 7:19Speaker 2: sort of a gel. Typically for the last few marathons,
- 7:23Speaker 2: I've been going with more in gels and I am
- 7:27Speaker 2: the kind of person who will reach for at most
- 7:31Speaker 2: every single water station at gatorad and I'm a really
- 7:33Speaker 2: salty sweater.
- 7:34Speaker 1: That's why i love training with elements.
- 7:36Speaker 2: But obviously during the marathon, I'm not carrying my own
- 7:38Speaker 2: bottle of elements. I'm only carrying my own gels.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 7:43Speaker 2: With this strategy, by carrying everything that you need on you,
- 7:46Speaker 2: your friends, your family, your supporters can literally just hold
- 7:49Speaker 2: signs and cheer for you.
- 7:51Speaker 1: And it's a little bit less stressful.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And the last thing a good brunch spot you finish
- 7:56Speaker 2: the New York City marathon on the Upper west Side.
- 7:59Speaker 2: My favorite brunch spot on the Upper west Side is
- 8:02Speaker 2: without it out, Jacob's Pickles. They also have Masson Pickle
- 8:06Speaker 2: down the street and other than that. Other than that,
- 8:09Speaker 2: other than that, I would recommend Mermaid in Uptown. Also,
- 8:14Speaker 2: the Smith is up there and Empire Hotel rooftop has
- 8:17Speaker 2: really great views. I'm not entirely sure what time they open,
- 8:20Speaker 2: but they will definitely be open for celebratory drinks in
- 8:24Speaker 2: the afternoon.
- 8:26Speaker 1: That's it for now.
- 8:27Speaker 2: As always, if you have a question that you want
- 8:30Speaker 2: to submit for the show, I'm All Ears, click on
- 8:32Speaker 2: over the show notes and click ask me a question,
- 8:35Speaker 2: Leave me a voicemail, and maybe you'll hear your voice
- 8:38Speaker 2: on an upcoming episode of Five Minute Friday. Make sure
- 8:42Speaker 2: to follow them long over on social at Hurdle Podcast,
