- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to an Airwave media podcast. I'm delicious friends,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and welcome to Who Did What Now? The history podcast
- 0:22Speaker 1: that's not your history class with me your host Katie Charlewood,
- 0:27Speaker 1: History Harlotte and reader of books. So I've only got
- 0:31Speaker 1: one live show left this year, just one, and it's
- 0:34Speaker 1: in Belfast and it's on the seventh of December, and
- 0:37Speaker 1: it's the last show. And I don't know when I'm
- 0:39Speaker 1: ever going to get back to Belfast to do a
- 0:41Speaker 1: live show because there's just so much. There's so much
- 0:44Speaker 1: happening next year, like I'm consistently doing things and next
- 0:50Speaker 1: year's looking it's starting to get a bit full, to
- 0:53Speaker 1: be honest. So yeah, Bellfast, this year is my last
- 0:57Speaker 1: live show. And it's been so because I did the
- 1:01Speaker 1: Edinburgh and Newcastle shows one after another, which honestly such
- 1:05Speaker 1: a good idea. Those places are so close, Like from
- 1:08Speaker 1: now one, I need to do shows close together when
- 1:11Speaker 1: I'm doing a tour, not flying from country to country
- 1:16Speaker 1: day after day, because that's insane. Why did I do that?
- 1:20Speaker 1: Why was that a thing I did? But yes, I
- 1:23Speaker 1: have one last show left, and oh the Newcastle show.
- 1:26Speaker 1: The Edinburgh show was great, it was amazing, and then
- 1:29Speaker 1: the Newcastle show Jan it was there in ruth in Ah.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Obviously I had a girl dinner. I had a girl
- 1:38Speaker 1: dinner with Rachel chartlind Daily. It was an amazing journalist
- 1:44Speaker 1: if you haven't read our stuff, And we went and
- 1:46Speaker 1: had girl dinner and it was so good because we
- 1:48Speaker 1: just ordered picky bits for the table and the two
- 1:52Speaker 1: It was just like eight all of it and we
- 1:56Speaker 1: had a great time. But yeah, things are things are
- 2:00Speaker 1: really starting to heat up with everything and I'm going
- 2:04Speaker 1: to be moving soon and there's just so much stuff
- 2:09Speaker 1: happening that I can't quite talk about yet, but there's
- 2:13Speaker 1: a lot of things in the works and I'm just
- 2:15Speaker 1: I'm so excited. But yeah, when it comes to the
- 2:18Speaker 1: live show, the live shows are always fun. They're always
- 2:20Speaker 1: like a good time. I tried to explain it before.
- 2:24Speaker 1: It's basically going to a comedy show except with facts
- 2:29Speaker 1: because I'm funny, but you learn things. It's a good time. Oh,
- 2:34Speaker 1: it was my birthday. It was my birthday last week.
- 2:37Speaker 1: So if anybody does want to like send me a
- 2:39Speaker 1: gift or donate to my Smutty Little Dress fund, or
- 2:43Speaker 1: buy a ticket and come see my show in Belfast.
- 2:47Speaker 1: That would be great. It's the last one of the years,
- 2:49Speaker 1: so come on, let's sell it out. Let's have fun,
- 2:52Speaker 1: like I will flog this dead horse and also this
- 2:54Speaker 1: live horse and someone else's horse too. Why not Whose
- 2:58Speaker 1: horse is that? I don't know, but I'm going to
- 3:00Speaker 1: be flogging it. Not really though. I don't flog horses
- 3:03Speaker 1: because horses scare me, and I wouldn't do that to
- 3:06Speaker 1: them because they have hoofs that could crush me or
- 3:11Speaker 1: at the very least damage moneys. I'm not here for that.
- 3:14Speaker 1: But I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, Katie, please
- 3:16Speaker 1: quit your jibber jabba in fact me, in fact you,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I will. But first we've got to get our source on.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Our sources are the outlaw nuns who traded their convent
- 3:29Speaker 1: for cars, cash and castles by Zarren Burnet the Third,
- 3:34Speaker 1: the Advisor to aging Nuns who sowed their convent by
- 3:39Speaker 1: Charles Goldsmith, millionaire Nuns on the rutten lesbian interests, and
- 3:45Speaker 1: the wrath of a disgraced bishop. We also have articles
- 3:49Speaker 1: from the Chicago Tribune, La Times, Brussels Times. I siding
- 3:55Speaker 1: comfortably good. Then let's begin. So our story starts in
- 4:02Speaker 1: the nineteen eighties in Bruges in Belgium. Now Bruges is
- 4:07Speaker 1: this quaint, idyllic town city locale. It is ancient? Is
- 4:16Speaker 1: it ancient? It's still got a lot of its medieval features.
- 4:19Speaker 1: You know, it's got cobbled streets, It's got old buildings,
- 4:24Speaker 1: one of which is a convent that goes all the
- 4:27Speaker 1: way back to the fifteen hundreds, So we're talking sixteenth
- 4:32Speaker 1: century convent. And in there are a bunch of nuns. Now,
- 4:37Speaker 1: if you have listened to me before, you know a
- 4:38Speaker 1: feelings on nuns, right, I got opinions, But these nuns
- 4:43Speaker 1: I can kind of get behind these nuns who do
- 4:47Speaker 1: happen to go on the run. Now, this isn't any
- 4:52Speaker 1: typical convent, right, So it is a convent of a
- 4:56Speaker 1: group of nuns, the Collegeen as they're known, or or
- 5:00Speaker 1: part of the Order of Saint Clair, also known as
- 5:03Speaker 1: the Poor Clails. So it's kind of it's kind of
- 5:08Speaker 1: like a reform group technically, because Saint Clair of a CC,
- 5:13Speaker 1: she establishes it in like twelve hundred and twelve, and
- 5:18Speaker 1: then Saint Collette like she sort of really reforms it
- 5:24Speaker 1: because they kind of get a wee bit larks over
- 5:26Speaker 1: the years, but then collettes in and she's like, no, no, no, no, no,
- 5:29Speaker 1: let's reform this. So it goes from Saint Clair of Asci,
- 5:35Speaker 1: who was one of the first women to like write
- 5:38Speaker 1: down the rules for her order, like they're super strict
- 5:41Speaker 1: as well. It all revolves around being poor. Right when
- 5:46Speaker 1: you become a nun, when you dot on the habit,
- 5:48Speaker 1: when you take your vows, you take a vout of poverty.
- 5:53Speaker 1: You can't own property, you can't own sort of material possessions,
- 5:58Speaker 1: you cannot earn. But interestingly, priests do not have to
- 6:05Speaker 1: do the same thing. Priests do not have to take
- 6:08Speaker 1: a vow of poverty. Priests can technically make any money
- 6:10Speaker 1: they want. But nuns, and even though there's no like
- 6:14Speaker 1: female equivalent for priests in Catholicism, right, nuns cannot earn.
- 6:23Speaker 1: They have to live meagerly, which is what the poor
- 6:26Speaker 1: clays the gallantine, that is what they do. So they
- 6:29Speaker 1: own nothing. They have to kind of survive in austerity measures,
- 6:34Speaker 1: you know, austereity, austerity measures. They have to survive on those,
- 6:39Speaker 1: and they have to rely on the kindness of strangers
- 6:42Speaker 1: effectively community and hope that the church is going to
- 6:45Speaker 1: like be considerate and help them out when they do.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And these nuns, these are living a very i'm gonna
- 6:54Speaker 1: call it medieval lifestyle. They're up at five o'clock in
- 6:58Speaker 1: the morning, they're doing the rosaries three you know, may
- 7:00Speaker 1: reason an our Father. They are going for it. They
- 7:03Speaker 1: are probably you know, toiling away in their we gardens
- 7:07Speaker 1: if they have a garden, and they're you know, up
- 7:10Speaker 1: at the cracket door and they're doing their prayers, they're eating,
- 7:12Speaker 1: they're gruel there, not exactly having you know, the fancies.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And then as they can't even have like cheap food,
- 7:20Speaker 1: like a big Mac, you know what I mean, that's
- 7:22Speaker 1: the cheapest thing I could think of, was a big mac.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Fucking hate McDonald's. But that's not the point. The point
- 7:28Speaker 1: is these nuns, they have to live in poverty, like
- 7:33Speaker 1: that's the whole thing. I don't know if you've seen
- 7:35Speaker 1: Sister Act, but when Dolores goes there and she goes
- 7:40Speaker 1: into her wee room, it's like a cell. It's like
- 7:43Speaker 1: a presence of her week. Cloister eats this really basic bed.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It's got a sheet, it's got a wooly blanket thing,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and that's where she's at, and she's not allowed material possessions,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and that's the whole thing. You're supposed to be in
- 7:57Speaker 1: your habit and your I assume sleeping shroud of some kind,
- 8:03Speaker 1: and you're supposed to live by the goodness of God.
- 8:06Speaker 1: You're supposed to be like super strict. You're going to
- 8:09Speaker 1: have your vow of chastitay, you're going to be obedient
- 8:11Speaker 1: to God, et cetera, et cetera. And on top of
- 8:16Speaker 1: being incredibly poor, they're not really supposed to have a
- 8:19Speaker 1: lot of contact with the outside world. They're supposed to
- 8:22Speaker 1: be sort of secluded from that. They're supposed to stay
- 8:26Speaker 1: in their own week convent and not really venture out
- 8:28Speaker 1: because they're supposed to just like dedicate their lives to God.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Now they don't have like a vow of silence or anything.
- 8:35Speaker 1: They're not like that bad, but it's a very very
- 8:41Speaker 1: strict way of living. And it's really interesting because they
- 8:46Speaker 1: live off of like donations, like that's how they survive,
- 8:51Speaker 1: but they don't really connect with the community, and so
- 8:55Speaker 1: they don't really have those connections, you know, because it
- 9:00Speaker 1: is a life of poverty. It's very difficult to get
- 9:06Speaker 1: people to join the ranks of this particular order, because
- 9:10Speaker 1: you're asking people to give up the opportunity to earn
- 9:14Speaker 1: a living, to have any goods or luxuries or things
- 9:20Speaker 1: that would be deemed a luxury, like a hair dryer.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You know, you can't want a hair dryer, which you
- 9:26Speaker 1: think isn't a big thing. But unless you're shaving your
- 9:28Speaker 1: head buld wet hair. Nobody wants to go to bed
- 9:31Speaker 1: wet hair. I'm just saying, like, you gotta wash. And
- 9:35Speaker 1: they do say cleanliness is next to godliness. So you've
- 9:40Speaker 1: caught this sort of mass movement sort of with the
- 9:44Speaker 1: sixties especially, and less unless people are joining the order
- 9:49Speaker 1: because you have women's liberation, you have sort of the
- 9:54Speaker 1: sexual revolution, and you've got independence. You know, all this
- 9:59Speaker 1: stuff has had happening. And by the nineteen eighties there's
- 10:03Speaker 1: not really a lot of people want to join the conteens.
- 10:06Speaker 1: They'll just not into it anymore. But these orders of
- 10:09Speaker 1: nuns they need fresh blood, they need sort of new
- 10:12Speaker 1: nuns going in because the way that these orders work,
- 10:16Speaker 1: they rely on the younger ones to take care of
- 10:19Speaker 1: the older ones. Like that's how this works. And when
- 10:23Speaker 1: the church is sort of having very few nuns join
- 10:27Speaker 1: or new people like take their vows and take their orders.
- 10:30Speaker 1: They have to figure out like where they're gonna place people,
- 10:33Speaker 1: because they have to decide where they're gonna send like
- 10:36Speaker 1: none a like is noney going to end up over
- 10:40Speaker 1: in like Saint Claire's. Is none being going to end
- 10:43Speaker 1: up in the order of like the Magdalene, Like they're
- 10:46Speaker 1: gonna put them in places right, And they decide, looking
- 10:53Speaker 1: at this very old building, this very old convent, they'll like,
- 10:59Speaker 1: we're going to stop new members joining this specific convent
- 11:03Speaker 1: because all the nuns there, well most of them are
- 11:07Speaker 1: in their eighties right or above the Mother Superior I
- 11:10Speaker 1: think is sixty one at this point. And then there's
- 11:14Speaker 1: one like younger nun that they've gotten and they're like,
- 11:18Speaker 1: we're just gonna, like slowly just cut off this convent
- 11:22Speaker 1: and stop them gaining new nuns. And so Sister Anna
- 11:26Speaker 1: Mother Superior, finds this out. She finds out that the
- 11:29Speaker 1: bishop isn't going to be sending them any new nuns,
- 11:33Speaker 1: meaning that the convent is going to be on the
- 11:35Speaker 1: chopping block, and she's like, h just watch him separate us,
- 11:41Speaker 1: because what she doesn't want is she doesn't want to
- 11:43Speaker 1: be separated from her sisters, from the other nuns. She's like,
- 11:48Speaker 1: I don't want this to happen. And she sees this
- 11:51Speaker 1: as sort of like a grubby thing that the chuck
- 11:54Speaker 1: was doing, and she ain't happy about it. The thing is,
- 11:58Speaker 1: in this convent with the eight nuns, many of them
- 12:02Speaker 1: being eighteen above, they had amassed over the last five centuries,
- 12:08Speaker 1: many many items. They had donations, they had holy relics,
- 12:12Speaker 1: they had art, they had many many valuable goods. And
- 12:17Speaker 1: also the convent itself was in a very very luxurious
- 12:25Speaker 1: part of town. It was property developers would be eyeing
- 12:29Speaker 1: it up. It's like prime location, like it was desirable.
- 12:34Speaker 1: So the church's plan was to like split all the
- 12:37Speaker 1: nuns up, send them off to other convents, take ownership
- 12:41Speaker 1: all this convent and all of the holy relics and
- 12:45Speaker 1: all of the valuables, and just amass that wealth and
- 12:49Speaker 1: add it to the wealth of the church, and just
- 12:52Speaker 1: get rid of these nuns and send them off to
- 12:55Speaker 1: the wind. And Sister Anna's like, fuck this for a
- 12:58Speaker 1: game of soldiers. She needs to figure something out. Enter
- 13:02Speaker 1: groundskeeper Ronnie Crab, which just sounds like a fake name.
- 13:08Speaker 1: He's thirty five and he is like, quote direct quote
- 13:12Speaker 1: the protege of a friend of the bishop. And he's like,
- 13:16Speaker 1: you go in there and do stuff for the nuns.
- 13:18Speaker 1: So he's like a groundskeeper. So clearly he's paid in
- 13:22Speaker 1: some way from the diocese, right, don't know howbody is.
- 13:25Speaker 1: He's like a general handyman. He's like their driver, Like
- 13:28Speaker 1: he does a bunch of stuff for them, and he
- 13:31Speaker 1: and Sister Anna like they become good buds. And he
- 13:35Speaker 1: just starts introducing things from outside into the lives of
- 13:39Speaker 1: these nuns, Like he helps her set up a bank account,
- 13:44Speaker 1: Like he tells her like, oh, maybe have you considered
- 13:47Speaker 1: investing in racehorses? Have you considered owning a farm? Have
- 13:52Speaker 1: you had a milky way? Like, just try and milky way,
- 13:55Speaker 1: You're gonna love it, right, trust me, just try a
- 13:58Speaker 1: with milky way. It's gonna be fat. And heil's a
- 14:00Speaker 1: fun way thing. Because of the way that Belgian property
- 14:04Speaker 1: law works, the nuns, the Order of Nuns, actually owned
- 14:08Speaker 1: the convent that they resided in, and so they you know,
- 14:13Speaker 1: crossed some tears, dotted some eyes and did the paperwork
- 14:18Speaker 1: so that the convent and the proceeds of the convent
- 14:23Speaker 1: when they passed away when they all died would go
- 14:27Speaker 1: to their families. So like the statutes were changed so
- 14:30Speaker 1: that they could pass it on and it was perfectly
- 14:36Speaker 1: perfectly legal. Like Sister Josephine said that she knew the
- 14:40Speaker 1: convent was on this list, that the bishop wasn't going
- 14:42Speaker 1: to let new nuns join, so that he could liquidate
- 14:46Speaker 1: it and get all get all this, and she stated,
- 14:52Speaker 1: this is my favorite quote. Why should we let it
- 14:55Speaker 1: bleed to death and let the diocese get all the
- 14:58Speaker 1: goods back? And so over the course of eighteen months,
- 15:04Speaker 1: with help from Ronnie Crabb, who was their go to
- 15:07Speaker 1: man to the outside world, the Order of Saint Claire's,
- 15:13Speaker 1: the Qualtines, the poor Clails began to sell off their
- 15:17Speaker 1: holy relics and the massive art collection, and secretly under
- 15:25Speaker 1: the table, they finally sell the convent itself for like
- 15:32Speaker 1: one point four million dollars, which is like nearly three
- 15:35Speaker 1: million dollars today, and it's the owner of a textile
- 15:39Speaker 1: company that who buys it, Like they've got all these
- 15:42Speaker 1: sort of property people who were like interested in it. Now,
- 15:47Speaker 1: why the textile guy bought it? I think because it's
- 15:49Speaker 1: very central in Bruges, and it was like a really
- 15:53Speaker 1: good location. So was he going to centralize it? Was
- 15:55Speaker 1: there's a possibility of like converting it into like apartments
- 16:00Speaker 1: and what was it, calling it cloisters and you know,
- 16:04Speaker 1: selling them off as their own little cloister apartment, like
- 16:07Speaker 1: it's a whole thing. Now. Of course, Sister Anna doesn't
- 16:09Speaker 1: want to upset the other nuns, so initially she doesn't
- 16:14Speaker 1: tell them that what she's doing, Like, she doesn't tell
- 16:17Speaker 1: them that she is selling off this stuff. And over
- 16:22Speaker 1: like the several months, like she slowly brings up the
- 16:26Speaker 1: idea that, you know, we're being betrayed here. We can't
- 16:31Speaker 1: rely on the church. We can't rely on them to
- 16:34Speaker 1: support us, to care for us, because again, if the
- 16:38Speaker 1: younger nuns aren't there to look after the older ones,
- 16:41Speaker 1: like older nuns often would end up living off of welfare,
- 16:45Speaker 1: Like they wouldn't be able to support themselves, you know,
- 16:48Speaker 1: they wouldn't be able to afford their medicine, and they
- 16:51Speaker 1: might not even be able to afford to be buried,
- 16:54Speaker 1: Like they wouldn't get a proper burial, they would have
- 16:57Speaker 1: a popple's grave, you know, which is kind of shitty.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Like again, I'm not the biggest fan of the religious people.
- 17:05Speaker 1: But if you have dedicated your life to your religion,
- 17:07Speaker 1: then they've given up everything to support this and do
- 17:11Speaker 1: God's work or whatever. And then you don't even have
- 17:14Speaker 1: a proper like full on church burial with like a
- 17:17Speaker 1: whole choir and nuns and stuff, Like what is that about?
- 17:20Speaker 1: That's a dick move, Like get the noun choir on,
- 17:24Speaker 1: get them singing versions of pop songs, but just replacing
- 17:27Speaker 1: anything about love with Jesus or I don't know, Mary
- 17:31Speaker 1: that we donkey any of them. And these nuns, they've
- 17:34Speaker 1: all felt that they have done so much and they're
- 17:36Speaker 1: being absolutely screwed over by the bishop, which they were.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Like the bishop, by the way, also not having the
- 17:42Speaker 1: best of times because over in Newport right there, who's
- 17:45Speaker 1: another nun and who has been like excommunicated because she's
- 17:48Speaker 1: like smoking cigars and driving like a pink morbike and
- 17:54Speaker 1: she's like causing chaos because he is just not able
- 17:57Speaker 1: to keep control of his nuns at this point. And
- 18:00Speaker 1: so all of these poor clayers, they are rallying behind
- 18:05Speaker 1: Sister Anna, like all of them except one, like the youngest,
- 18:11Speaker 1: who is also I don't even know that she's fully
- 18:15Speaker 1: taken her vows yet like she's sort of entering it.
- 18:20Speaker 1: And yes, she is not too keen on this. She's
- 18:25Speaker 1: looking at Ronnie and she's thinking, you're a dick, right.
- 18:28Speaker 1: She doesn't trust him. She's not keen on Ronnie Crab
- 18:31Speaker 1: at all. And so Sister Anna gets her shit together
- 18:37Speaker 1: and then one day in nineteen eighty five, in the
- 18:41Speaker 1: early hours five am, like they normally get up, all
- 18:45Speaker 1: of the nuns, they get up, they pack all their stuff,
- 18:48Speaker 1: and the night before they're due to flee, the bishop
- 18:51Speaker 1: shows up at the convent door at eleven o'clock at
- 18:54Speaker 1: nine and he's like, let me in, let me in.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I need to the COVIDR financials. I need to make
- 18:58Speaker 1: sure you haven't sold anything, because he's heard that they're
- 19:02Speaker 1: going to sell the convent. And he's like, you can't
- 19:05Speaker 1: sell that, and they're like, yeah, we can actually because
- 19:07Speaker 1: it's legal. And they're refusing to let him look at
- 19:10Speaker 1: the books, and he's like, let me in, let me in,
- 19:12Speaker 1: and eventually Sister Anna she lets him in and they
- 19:17Speaker 1: have this massive row and then she's like, don't worry,
- 19:20Speaker 1: we'll be gone in the morning, and he's like okay, sure, whatever,
- 19:23Speaker 1: and he goes. And the very next morning, five o'clock,
- 19:27Speaker 1: they're up as per usual, three hill Mary's and our father,
- 19:31Speaker 1: and they grab all their stuff because they've got stuff now, right,
- 19:35Speaker 1: and they are traveling to southern France. They are traveling
- 19:39Speaker 1: to southern France to their new home, because their new
- 19:43Speaker 1: home is a castle. They bought a castle. A bunch
- 19:49Speaker 1: of these nuns who been living in poverty all their life,
- 19:52Speaker 1: they decide they're moving to an actual castle, like a
- 19:56Speaker 1: proper castle, like outside this village which made bullets, Like
- 20:01Speaker 1: that's the big thing about this village. It's primary purpose
- 20:06Speaker 1: was making bullets. And Ronnie's like, that's the castle for you.
- 20:10Speaker 1: And it's a castle. It's a proper medieval castle. It
- 20:14Speaker 1: has holes in the wall, it's got crumbling roof, it
- 20:18Speaker 1: has no indoor plumbing or electricity. Granted, these are nuns
- 20:22Speaker 1: who are used to living a poor life. But it's winter,
- 20:25Speaker 1: I think at this point, so it's like chili, Like
- 20:27Speaker 1: that's not going to be a good time. These are old,
- 20:29Speaker 1: old nuns, but they are happy because they're going to
- 20:33Speaker 1: be together. And so they pack their bags, they grab
- 20:36Speaker 1: all their stuff, and they get all of their vehicles,
- 20:41Speaker 1: this caravan, this cavalcade, this just fleet. At this point,
- 20:49Speaker 1: they have all these cars. They've got six Mercedes Sedans,
- 20:52Speaker 1: like the most nineteen eighty ish of cars. They've got
- 20:56Speaker 1: a CADILLACX ofvill and they have a pink Mercedes limousine
- 21:03Speaker 1: that has a TV and a wet bar, everything that
- 21:09Speaker 1: nuns would want. But on top of this as well,
- 21:12Speaker 1: they also purchased an ambulance. You see. The ambulance was
- 21:20Speaker 1: for ninety three year old sister Agnes. See Agnes, she's
- 21:25Speaker 1: getting on a bit and she doesn't have the use
- 21:28Speaker 1: of her legs, so she's immobile. On top of that,
- 21:31Speaker 1: she cannot hear or say so at this point she's
- 21:36Speaker 1: deaf and at least partially blind. And they're like, we'll
- 21:40Speaker 1: not leave an Agnes behind. Agnes is coming with us,
- 21:44Speaker 1: and so they get an ambulance for her. Who was
- 21:47Speaker 1: driving the ambulance, I do not know, maybe Ronnie Crab.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Maybe they've hired a driver. Maybe they've hired a paramedic
- 21:54Speaker 1: or at least somebody with basic first aid training, the
- 21:58Speaker 1: purpose of which is like just to get them from
- 22:02Speaker 1: A to B, because none of these nuns actually know
- 22:05Speaker 1: how to drive. Although could you imagine, right? Could you imagine?
- 22:11Speaker 1: Because I'm assuming all of them are in this stretch
- 22:14Speaker 1: pink limousine with drivers in their other cars, because otherwise
- 22:21Speaker 1: you're seeing a fleet of Mercedes driven by nuns and
- 22:27Speaker 1: they keep their habits on like they're in the habits
- 22:29Speaker 1: they're wearing the outfit, like is there a none driving
- 22:34Speaker 1: the ambulance? Can a un drive an ambulance? Like? Just
- 22:37Speaker 1: take a moment to picture that, because I think that
- 22:40Speaker 1: in itself is its own wonderful, wonderful little tale. You
- 22:47Speaker 1: know what. I think? Now is a really good time
- 22:49Speaker 1: for a message from our sponsors, if there are any sponsors,
- 22:53Speaker 1: or maybe you're listening ad free, but let's enjoy the
- 22:55Speaker 1: moment and welcome back. I hope you enjoyed some peace,
- 23:08Speaker 1: or me talking more, or maybe an ad for another podcast.
- 23:12Speaker 1: It really could be anything at this point. I don't
- 23:14Speaker 1: know what's on there, but yeah, the nuns, the nuns
- 23:18Speaker 1: that are on the run. So five o'clock in the morning,
- 23:21Speaker 1: under cover of darkness and a fleet, I'd say it's
- 23:25Speaker 1: not subtle, is it. It's a fleet of Mercedes, a Cadillac,
- 23:31Speaker 1: a pink stretch limousine and an ambulance, which may or
- 23:35Speaker 1: may not be driven by nuns or Ronnie Crab because
- 23:40Speaker 1: Ronnie could be driving them because he was the one
- 23:41Speaker 1: who was driving them places typically. And so these nuns
- 23:46Speaker 1: they bugger off out of Bruges, out of Belgium, and
- 23:49Speaker 1: they're going to the south of France. And I say
- 23:52Speaker 1: the south of France, it's more like southern France. I
- 23:55Speaker 1: think it's like bordering Spain, you know, but it's not
- 23:59Speaker 1: like Sanpe. It's not wine region. It's again an area
- 24:05Speaker 1: mostly known for bullet making, which I don't know if
- 24:10Speaker 1: that was a big thing in the eighties, French bullets.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Maybe it was really big geo on the walls, and
- 24:17Speaker 1: they had a good few of them, and there's probably
- 24:19Speaker 1: going to be more. Because that's that's our lives, just
- 24:23Speaker 1: one war after the other. It would be nice if
- 24:26Speaker 1: we could stop living through major historical events. Anybody else
- 24:29Speaker 1: think that it would be super And so the cavalcade
- 24:33Speaker 1: of nuns they head down to southern France and they
- 24:37Speaker 1: get to their less than fabulous castle. But they're happy
- 24:41Speaker 1: because they're all together, because they're just fucking done. They
- 24:47Speaker 1: are done with the way they are treated. They are
- 24:49Speaker 1: done with being fucked around by the bishop and the
- 24:53Speaker 1: diocese and the people trying to get their shit. It's like,
- 24:57Speaker 1: we don't want to give you nuns and stuff, even
- 24:59Speaker 1: though you've got like all of this money and all
- 25:01Speaker 1: of this artwork and all of these relics. We think
- 25:04Speaker 1: we should have it as men over here because we
- 25:08Speaker 1: like pray better or whatever. Sure you do. So they're
- 25:11Speaker 1: in their castle. The castle has a swimming pool. No
- 25:14Speaker 1: running water, but it's got a swimming pool. And I
- 25:17Speaker 1: don't know do they swim in the habits? Do they
- 25:19Speaker 1: have special like swimming habits? Can they even swim? These
- 25:23Speaker 1: are questions I don't know anybody has asked can nuns swim?
- 25:28Speaker 1: I'm not suggesting you have to push them in to
- 25:30Speaker 1: see if they float sync because that's a different test.
- 25:34Speaker 1: But it's got a pool. It's got a tennis court. Again,
- 25:36Speaker 1: no no running water, but it's got other cool things
- 25:40Speaker 1: which seem to be seem to be happy. Also, they've
- 25:44Speaker 1: got TVs and stuff in the Mercedes. They don't need
- 25:46Speaker 1: Italian the castle. They can just go for a drive
- 25:49Speaker 1: and watch an episode of Muddle. She wrote. Now I
- 25:52Speaker 1: know they're Belgian, right, I am well aware that they
- 25:55Speaker 1: are Belgian, okay, but I maintain that everybody, regardless of race,
- 26:00Speaker 1: age of gender, can appreciate, can really appreciate the work
- 26:04Speaker 1: of Angela Lansbury, especially as writer slash sleuth JB. Fletcher.
- 26:12Speaker 1: And so they're just enjoying themselves, just living life in
- 26:16Speaker 1: the castle, maybe playing some tennis. They're earning money, one
- 26:20Speaker 1: would assume from their race horses and or farm. I
- 26:24Speaker 1: couldn't find what type of farm it was, but I
- 26:29Speaker 1: hope they made something from it. Regardless, they are enjoying themselves,
- 26:33Speaker 1: they are together, they are happy, they are out of
- 26:35Speaker 1: the grasp of the slowly but surely more infuriated Reverend
- 26:41Speaker 1: Roger van Herlouis, whose name may have absolutely buggered up.
- 26:46Speaker 1: So if you're Belgian, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
- 26:51Speaker 1: So he is livid would probably be the term. He's
- 26:54Speaker 1: so pissed off. He's like he's mad that they like
- 26:59Speaker 1: buggered off, Like he's he's there with his he's there
- 27:04Speaker 1: with his church loyals, like solicitors from the Vatican, like
- 27:08Speaker 1: attorneys like mmm, church loyals, Like they're gonna go and
- 27:12Speaker 1: he's gonna like fight this whole property thing in Belgium.
- 27:15Speaker 1: And the good thing is sister Anna. She she was careful,
- 27:23Speaker 1: Like the non's dead. Their research, you cannot argue that,
- 27:26Speaker 1: like they were ironclad. And so when he goes in
- 27:32Speaker 1: and he's like legally trying to take back the property,
- 27:35Speaker 1: Belgium's like nah, like they sold it fair and square,
- 27:40Speaker 1: like you can't, you can't get it, and they're like,
- 27:45Speaker 1: this is a valid sale, you know, stamp stamp, everything's fine,
- 27:49Speaker 1: and the church is like, I disagree with that opinion.
- 27:53Speaker 1: And it's like it's not an opinion, it's the law
- 27:55Speaker 1: and like but it's not our law though, and it's
- 27:58Speaker 1: like no, but it's the law of the country way
- 28:00Speaker 1: in which the convent is situated. It's like the nuns
- 28:05Speaker 1: at every right to sell this property because they made
- 28:08Speaker 1: the effort to actually read the bylines. Like it's not
- 28:12Speaker 1: their fault. You didn't read the small print. Get av
- 28:16Speaker 1: yourself than hului. But like, yeah, he's slowly realizing, right
- 28:21Speaker 1: that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. And
- 28:24Speaker 1: so the church try and do this like we sneaky
- 28:27Speaker 1: sleep move. When they try an offer to buy the
- 28:31Speaker 1: convent back for the nuns, like at the same price,
- 28:34Speaker 1: you know that the property developer, the textile guy bought it.
- 28:39Speaker 1: And they're like, hmm, no, no, we're good. Like the
- 28:44Speaker 1: nuns are so disinterested. They don't want to come back.
- 28:46Speaker 1: They want to just keep living their lives down in
- 28:49Speaker 1: their castle in France. And the bishop's trying to just
- 28:52Speaker 1: convince them. He's trying to cajole them and be like,
- 28:54Speaker 1: if you come back, things will be better, and they're
- 28:56Speaker 1: like things are already better. We have as pool, we
- 29:01Speaker 1: don't have a swimming pool, and brouge like, we're enjoying ourselves.
- 29:05Speaker 1: We're actually living our lives and taking care of each other,
- 29:08Speaker 1: which you were supposed to do. You were supposed to
- 29:10Speaker 1: ensure that we had nuns to take care of each other,
- 29:13Speaker 1: and you didn't do that. So this is a you problem,
- 29:17Speaker 1: you know. And the nuns are just they're just having
- 29:21Speaker 1: a great time. And Bishop van Hooley, right, he decides
- 29:25Speaker 1: he's going to try and focus on just like this
- 29:28Speaker 1: stuff that was in the convent. He's like, I'll just
- 29:31Speaker 1: get the relics and the artifacts and the art and
- 29:33Speaker 1: I'll get all that and to be fine. And then
- 29:35Speaker 1: he goes there and it's apparent there's nothing there like
- 29:40Speaker 1: they stripped at bail, they sold the lot, they just
- 29:45Speaker 1: got rid of it all. They were like mmm done,
- 29:47Speaker 1: Like that feels more spiteful to me, but I'm here
- 29:51Speaker 1: for it. And this is so embarrassing for the church
- 29:54Speaker 1: because there's like nothing left for them to reclaim, like
- 30:00Speaker 1: there's nothing, there is no artifacts, they can't get their
- 30:04Speaker 1: hands in the convent. They can't get anything, and they
- 30:08Speaker 1: are so mad about it because it really shows them up,
- 30:13Speaker 1: like they were out smart and outwitted by a bunch
- 30:16Speaker 1: of old ladies in habits and like this is the
- 30:20Speaker 1: second time, the second time he has been screwed over
- 30:23Speaker 1: by nuns. And it's so so funny because right the
- 30:30Speaker 1: nuns in Newport that I'd mentioned in the other like
- 30:32Speaker 1: part of Belgium is they had the Mother's superior the
- 30:38Speaker 1: cigar chomping like fast car driving. She converts part of
- 30:46Speaker 1: her convent into a luxury boutique hotel because she's like,
- 30:51Speaker 1: we're perr as hell and we need to like eat
- 30:53Speaker 1: and stuff. And then it gets to the point where
- 30:55Speaker 1: she's like, well, screw you because you're not helping us
- 30:57Speaker 1: at all. And that's where that's all comes from. So
- 31:00Speaker 1: funny and so he's dealing with this already, and then
- 31:04Speaker 1: he's also dealing with nuns on the run and Sister Maria,
- 31:08Speaker 1: the mother superior, right, she gets excommunicated because they're like,
- 31:12Speaker 1: you're not living a religious life, and she's like, ah,
- 31:17Speaker 1: go a spin on it, mate, because like they had
- 31:20Speaker 1: done the same thing to her as they'd done to
- 31:24Speaker 1: the qualiteens to this, the poor clails because her order
- 31:29Speaker 1: had three nuns left and there was nobody joining, and
- 31:33Speaker 1: they were gonna let people join. And so she decides
- 31:38Speaker 1: that she's gonna protect her nuns because she doesn't need
- 31:41Speaker 1: the feel convent, now, does she? Because she's only got
- 31:43Speaker 1: three nuns to take care of, and she's gonna make
- 31:46Speaker 1: sure she can. And so she starts small, you know,
- 31:51Speaker 1: selling communion waffles. I didn't realize this was going to
- 31:54Speaker 1: be a thing, but apparently you can just sell them,
- 31:57Speaker 1: or you're not supposed to, but she did. And who
- 32:00Speaker 1: is buying communion waifles? Like, mm, who wants the body
- 32:05Speaker 1: of Christ? Oh? I know who'd want it? Oh? Yeah yeah,
- 32:10Speaker 1: M Masochist Christians is the massokest Christians. They're bad at again,
- 32:15Speaker 1: they really they're really into it, you know. And so god,
- 32:20Speaker 1: I think honestly, if you ever read anything by Paul, right,
- 32:25Speaker 1: Paul is what's the word for someone who is like
- 32:29Speaker 1: afraid of sex. It's there's like a something of phobe,
- 32:33Speaker 1: but like they hate it. Like he is repulsed by
- 32:36Speaker 1: the idea of sex and people use this as a
- 32:39Speaker 1: as a thing for like, m it's against homosexuality. No,
- 32:43Speaker 1: he doesn't like any of the sex. None of the sex.
- 32:46Speaker 1: He doesn't believe anybody should be putting anything into anybody else. Mmmm.
- 32:50Speaker 1: He's not into that pain reaction. He's not into the
- 32:52Speaker 1: pa and A action. He's not into like a great
- 32:55Speaker 1: rubbing of parts, none of it. He is absolutely repulsed
- 32:59Speaker 1: by all sets, even though he knows that like you
- 33:03Speaker 1: need it for to like create other humans. But yeah,
- 33:06Speaker 1: Paul's just Paul. I mean, I don't want to call
- 33:09Speaker 1: him a prude because that doesn't feel severe enough. But
- 33:13Speaker 1: Paul is just a bit of a dick for someone
- 33:16Speaker 1: who's afraid of them, you know what I mean? Yeah?
- 33:19Speaker 1: But yeah, system Maria from the Other Order, right, So
- 33:21Speaker 1: she's like selling communion wafers, She's showing up at events,
- 33:26Speaker 1: like she's paid for appearances. She's like, oh, it's system Maria,
- 33:29Speaker 1: and she's like, bless you and shit, but like would
- 33:33Speaker 1: she do it if you sneezed? Or would she make
- 33:36Speaker 1: you hand over some coins? First it's it's just a thought.
- 33:39Speaker 1: And then eventually she converts part of the convent into
- 33:44Speaker 1: this like luxury boutique hotel and it is filled with
- 33:47Speaker 1: like actual like expensive stuff. You've got like ming vases,
- 33:52Speaker 1: you've got Persian rugs. It is so fancy. And of
- 34:00Speaker 1: course they try and excommunicator. They're like they try and
- 34:02Speaker 1: demote her, and they try and get rid of her.
- 34:04Speaker 1: But she had an inheritance, but she wasn't supposed to
- 34:06Speaker 1: keep because she's a nun. She's not supposed to have
- 34:08Speaker 1: like worldly stuff. But she has an inheritance and a
- 34:10Speaker 1: bank account convert to the convent and is like, I'm
- 34:13Speaker 1: making money for me and man nuns. And this is
- 34:16Speaker 1: her driving around in her pink car smoking a cigar
- 34:20Speaker 1: like that is that's a pretty funky nun, you know,
- 34:23Speaker 1: as nuns go, oh my god, I actually evergot the
- 34:26Speaker 1: best part. Right, So this hotel that she's turned half
- 34:29Speaker 1: the convent into, right, the bathrooms are proper like Marlon
- 34:34Speaker 1: Monroe bathrooms. They are pink tiled, like there's a gym
- 34:40Speaker 1: in it, like it is, it is, it is, It's cool,
- 34:45Speaker 1: It's cool as hell. And suddenly I really want to
- 34:48Speaker 1: be in this like convent hotel. Is it still there?
- 34:51Speaker 1: I hope it's still there because I want to go there.
- 34:54Speaker 1: But back to the escape to nuns. The nuns on
- 34:56Speaker 1: the run, well they're not actually on the run, they're
- 34:59Speaker 1: just kind of away. And between nuns on the run
- 35:04Speaker 1: and the cigar smoking, you know, hotel none, the diocese
- 35:10Speaker 1: are struggling. They're in the papers and they are just
- 35:13Speaker 1: freaking out because they are so fucking embarrass They've got
- 35:17Speaker 1: egg all over the face, right, And the nuns are like, oh,
- 35:22Speaker 1: you care about us, but you were gonna like abandon
- 35:25Speaker 1: us in our old age, like you weren't going to
- 35:28Speaker 1: help us, Like, oh you care for our welfare, you
- 35:30Speaker 1: care about us, Well, why didn't you let us have
- 35:32Speaker 1: new nuns? Why weren't you adding financial support for us?
- 35:36Speaker 1: Like what were you doing? You did nothing? And so
- 35:40Speaker 1: the church is mad and they need to point the
- 35:44Speaker 1: finger at someone, and so they point the finger at
- 35:48Speaker 1: Ronnie Crab because they're like, clearly this man is the
- 35:52Speaker 1: bad guy. I mean, I'm not saying he's the good guy,
- 35:55Speaker 1: but like the church is like Ronnie Crab, which brings
- 35:58Speaker 1: us to Sister Remember, the young nun. So she's the
- 36:03Speaker 1: one who went to the church with us, and she
- 36:06Speaker 1: writes a letter, and she writes an Effi David, basically
- 36:09Speaker 1: stating that she feels that the older nuns were emotionally
- 36:13Speaker 1: abused and manipulated by Ronnie Crabb. She's like, he messed
- 36:18Speaker 1: with them, he did this, and she's like she's trying
- 36:21Speaker 1: to stop this from happening. So she's the one who
- 36:23Speaker 1: went to the bishop. She's the one who went to
- 36:25Speaker 1: the diocese. And it's her letter that the bishop gives
- 36:28Speaker 1: to the police in order to get the ball rolling
- 36:32Speaker 1: because they think this is like a whole thing and
- 36:37Speaker 1: so and so the church basically has this story pushing
- 36:41Speaker 1: that Sister Anna and Ronnie were working together deliberately to
- 36:46Speaker 1: sort of hoodwink and abuse the nuts, right, that's the
- 36:49Speaker 1: thing they're telling it, and that you know, everyone's being misled.
- 36:55Speaker 1: And so the police a judge and trying to decide
- 37:01Speaker 1: to head all the way down to southern France to
- 37:03Speaker 1: visit the nuns in this castle, and they want to
- 37:06Speaker 1: like get to the bottom of this because they're worried
- 37:11Speaker 1: that the nuns are being held there against their will
- 37:13Speaker 1: by Ronnie Crabb. So, yeah, there's a police officer, a
- 37:18Speaker 1: couple of police officers, there's a judge and a journalist
- 37:21Speaker 1: heading down to a castle in the south of France
- 37:24Speaker 1: to see if a bunch of old ladies have been
- 37:26Speaker 1: none napped, Like that's that's where we're at in this situation,
- 37:31Speaker 1: none napping. And so they get there and they're like
- 37:36Speaker 1: at the pool, they're playing tennis. Maybe they're having a mimosa.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Maybe they're just living their best lives. Maybe they're drinking
- 37:43Speaker 1: wine because they're in fucking France, right perhaps, and they're
- 37:48Speaker 1: saying that they're having a great time, they love their lives.
- 37:51Speaker 1: They were not being duked, like they even have to
- 37:54Speaker 1: like bring lawyers in, and they say that, you know,
- 37:59Speaker 1: we were not sort of manipulated, we are sound of mind.
- 38:02Speaker 1: We're not seen now like what is wrong we do
- 38:06Speaker 1: And the nuns are like, we did this ourselves. This
- 38:10Speaker 1: was our choice, like, don't blame anybody. And so the Vatican,
- 38:16Speaker 1: none too please with this scenario, decide that they're just
- 38:21Speaker 1: gonna go after Ronnie, especially saying he committed extortion, fraud,
- 38:28Speaker 1: elder rebus, forgery, and theft. But of course they have
- 38:33Speaker 1: to find Ronnie because where is Ronnie crap? Where is he?
- 38:38Speaker 1: Like he's taken the nuns, He's got all this money
- 38:41Speaker 1: he has, he has squirreled some away for himself, But
- 38:45Speaker 1: where is he? You'll never guess. He's in the castle
- 38:50Speaker 1: with the nuns. He's with them. He hasn't left, like
- 38:54Speaker 1: he's stayed with them, and he's just there. And so
- 38:58Speaker 1: it's very easy to arrest him, and they do, and
- 39:01Speaker 1: he goes to jail for thirty nine days and then
- 39:05Speaker 1: there is a whole legal battle. So remember when I
- 39:11Speaker 1: said that he had squirreled away abouit for himself. See, Ronnie,
- 39:16Speaker 1: he had, as it turns out, out of all of
- 39:19Speaker 1: the millions, because remember they sold the convent for like
- 39:23Speaker 1: one point four million, and then all of the relics
- 39:25Speaker 1: in the art and everything else was just huge. So
- 39:29Speaker 1: they weren't able to reclaim all the money from everything
- 39:32Speaker 1: that was sold. The church tried, but as it turns out,
- 39:37Speaker 1: they were ten million short. So somewhere Ronnie had embezzled
- 39:43Speaker 1: ten million from the nuns, and so he's in jail
- 39:47Speaker 1: for thirty nine days, and then mysteriously all the charges
- 39:54Speaker 1: are dropped. The sale of the convent was voided, and
- 39:58Speaker 1: all of the property, all of the land and all
- 40:01Speaker 1: of the bits right it was returned to the church.
- 40:09Speaker 1: The nuns were all sent to this like retirement home.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Like it's a fancy retirement home. Nevertheless, and you'd think
- 40:18Speaker 1: that this lovely retirement home would have been covered by
- 40:20Speaker 1: the church, but because of the ages of the nuns, right,
- 40:24Speaker 1: the church were able to weasel out of it and
- 40:27Speaker 1: get the Bilgian government to pay, like some PAMs were
- 40:31Speaker 1: greased there, Like that is a that is a pressure story.
- 40:35Speaker 1: And so they're in the retirement home. They're like they're
- 40:40Speaker 1: slowly being separated, which is something that Sister Anna did
- 40:43Speaker 1: not want. And of course Sister Agnes like she passes
- 40:48Speaker 1: away and that's like the end of these nuns. And
- 40:52Speaker 1: so like the following year, Ronnie Krab ends up writing
- 40:55Speaker 1: a book because whatever connection they had it was all
- 40:58Speaker 1: severed at this point, and so he writes a book
- 41:00Speaker 1: about it, and then it gets made into this really
- 41:04Speaker 1: really awful movie. I feel like it could be done
- 41:07Speaker 1: well with a few like tweaks here and there, but
- 41:09Speaker 1: I feel like it's it could be like I don't
- 41:11Speaker 1: want to say Sister Act three, but it could be something,
- 41:13Speaker 1: you know, And like a lot of this happens in
- 41:16Speaker 1: like the late eighties and up to nineteen ninety but
- 41:20Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety six he is acquitted of all charges,
- 41:24Speaker 1: like everything is dropped, but he has had this book
- 41:29Speaker 1: and this. But also he alleges right that there's this
- 41:34Speaker 1: lesbian love triangle happening in the convent, and so the
- 41:37Speaker 1: nuns are like, fuck you, Ronnie, we are done with you,
- 41:41Speaker 1: and Ronnie Ronnie disappeals from the limelight. He disappears from
- 41:45Speaker 1: like everywhere actually for years and years and years, and
- 41:51Speaker 1: then the next time we hear about him after his
- 41:54Speaker 1: shitty film is when he's standing. He's standing for parlam Right.
- 42:01Speaker 1: He is a member of Belgium's far right New Flemish Alliance.
- 42:07Speaker 1: But like people know how to use research, and so
- 42:12Speaker 1: it's very easy in Belgium to find you know, Belgium
- 42:16Speaker 1: history and crime, which is everyone loves crime. And so
- 42:22Speaker 1: it is discovered that he did this with these nuns
- 42:25Speaker 1: and they're like, you are a terrible person, and he's like,
- 42:28Speaker 1: come on now, I swindled some lesbian nuns. It's fine,
- 42:32Speaker 1: and they'll let no, you're a dick. And so he
- 42:35Speaker 1: disappears then and we hear nothing about him since. As
- 42:41Speaker 1: for the nuns, Sister Anna she has left the convent,
- 42:46Speaker 1: she's left the other nuns, and she moves into a
- 42:51Speaker 1: small cottage. I say cottage. It's a wee farmhouse in
- 42:55Speaker 1: the Alden. It is beautiful full there and by this stream,
- 43:02Speaker 1: I say they I've given it away. See she moves there. Well,
- 43:07Speaker 1: a woman who an ex nun. Actually her name is
- 43:11Speaker 1: Gillamine Lambrette's I'm sorry for butchering that now. She used
- 43:18Speaker 1: to be a nun and she used to go by
- 43:20Speaker 1: the name of Sister Clara, the very woman who went
- 43:26Speaker 1: to the diocese because she was worried. Like she didn't
- 43:29Speaker 1: do it because she you know, wanted, like you know,
- 43:34Speaker 1: to get into the nunnery. She did this because she
- 43:38Speaker 1: was genuinely worried. She thought that this charismatic thirty five
- 43:42Speaker 1: year old man was just gonna buger everything up for
- 43:44Speaker 1: everybody and was going to steal a bunch of shit,
- 43:46Speaker 1: which she did do, but she was like thought she
- 43:49Speaker 1: was they were going to be taken for a ride
- 43:51Speaker 1: and completely fucked over, and so she was trying to
- 43:55Speaker 1: protect Sister Anna more than anybody else. And eventually the
- 44:02Speaker 1: two former nuns move into this farmhouse in the adn
- 44:06Speaker 1: and the beautiful picturesque Aldens so that they can quote
- 44:14Speaker 1: live together far from all hassle. And what of the bishop,
- 44:19Speaker 1: I hear you ask, well, Reverend Roger van Harloui, at
- 44:27Speaker 1: age seventy three, becomes the first European bishop to resign
- 44:33Speaker 1: as a result of child abuse allegations. I'm not going
- 44:37Speaker 1: to go into details. That's all I'm going to say. Effectively,
- 44:42Speaker 1: there's like five hundred people come forward like all in
- 44:45Speaker 1: all all these reports and as a massive cover up,
- 44:48Speaker 1: and the archbishop is like, okay, you're done, and so
- 44:51Speaker 1: he gets discredited and he is forced to resign. So
- 44:57Speaker 1: he gets his come up in kind of he gets
- 45:00Speaker 1: it's an absolute shitting in the press, and Sister Anna
- 45:04Speaker 1: and Sister Clara get to live their lovely lesbian cottage
- 45:09Speaker 1: life together. And so endo the story of the Nuns
- 45:14Speaker 1: on the Run. If you liked my retelling of this
- 45:19Speaker 1: tale of history, I feel free to wait. Interview five starts.
- 45:22Speaker 1: If you're going to complain to say nothing, and so
- 45:26Speaker 1: do not forget that you can follow me on the socials.
- 45:28Speaker 1: I do tend to reply, except when I get literally
- 45:30Speaker 1: hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of messages telling me that
- 45:36Speaker 1: smarties or not smarties. Because when you do that, when
- 45:40Speaker 1: people feel they need to correct me on something I
- 45:42Speaker 1: am right about, it means that I'll miss like the
- 45:45Speaker 1: other messages that come in, like you've just blocked someone
- 45:48Speaker 1: else because you just couldn't accept the fact that things
- 45:52Speaker 1: are different in other places. Anyway, that's enough ranting for
- 45:57Speaker 1: the day, and I think it's it's time for recommendation.
- 46:00Speaker 1: So I do respond. I do respond to a lot
- 46:02Speaker 1: of messages, and I do take a lot of stuff in.
- 46:05Speaker 1: But sometimes sometimes when stuff gets overflowing and overrun, there's
- 46:10Speaker 1: not a lot I can do, you know, but I
- 46:13Speaker 1: do try. And oh, I will have more information for
- 46:16Speaker 1: the US tour, hopefully before Christmas, like I'm hoping that
- 46:19Speaker 1: everything will be locked in before then. So that's all
- 46:22Speaker 1: running on, okay, And so recommendation time for watching. I
- 46:27Speaker 1: have been watching this show called Wedding Season, and it's
- 46:32Speaker 1: like a mystery. I mean it is a mystery. It's
- 46:34Speaker 1: one of the thing. It's got time jumps, which just
- 46:36Speaker 1: tells you backstory as opposed to you know, other nonsense,
- 46:43Speaker 1: and so it's a good it's a weird. I kind
- 46:45Speaker 1: of I'm into it, is what I'm trying to say.
- 46:49Speaker 1: I didn't think I would be. I'm really into the
- 46:52Speaker 1: clothes also, and yeah, the characters in it are interesting,
- 46:57Speaker 1: kind of into those anyway. Point being not because the
- 47:00Speaker 1: main character is called Katie. That's not why. But yeah,
- 47:03Speaker 1: Wedding Season is a show I'm currently watching for listening. Okay,
- 47:08Speaker 1: if you're not listening to Vulgar History, like you need
- 47:11Speaker 1: to be listening to Vulgar History, like she is so good,
- 47:15Speaker 1: Like that's that's this week's listen and reading. You know what. Actually,
- 47:21Speaker 1: there's a book called Tart by Becky Crosslights up for
- 47:24Speaker 1: pre order, Like this is the book you want? You
- 47:27Speaker 1: want this book? Okay, it is It is great. That
- 47:31Speaker 1: is the book you want. Okay, So that is everything.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Thank you for listening, and I will chat to you
- 47:37Speaker 1: again next time. Adios of ware is them my friends.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Bye bye,
