Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Biden TORCHED five years after Afghanistan withdrawal
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, today marks five years since the final U.S. military
- 0:03Speaker 1: plane departed Afghanistan, bringing a chaotic end to the 20-year war.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Thousands of America's Afghan allies scrambled to flee as the
- 0:13Speaker 1: Biden administration's botched withdrawal ended with the Taliban back in power.
- 0:18Speaker 1: The final plane left just days after a suicide bombing
- 0:22Speaker 1: outside Kabul airport, which, of course, killed 13 American service members.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Heroes.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Among them, a 23-year-old Army Staff Sergeant, Ryan Christian Knauss,
- 0:34Speaker 1: the only Army soldier killed in the attack. Joining us
- 0:38Speaker 1: now is Ryan's mother. She's a Gold Star mom, Paula
- 0:41Speaker 1: Knauss South. Thank you for joining us today. First of all,
- 0:45Speaker 1: I want to send you condolences from everyone here at
- 0:49Speaker 1: Fox & Friends. Our hearts still breaks for you and
- 0:52Speaker 1: your family when you had to go through this. What
- 0:56Speaker 1: does this anniversary mean to you?
- 1:00Speaker 2: Well, it's been a very sad occasion in the fact
- 1:03Speaker 2: that we've lost anybody on that pullout. But it is
- 1:06Speaker 2: a honor to know that we can move forward together
- 1:09Speaker 2: to make a difference so that this never happens again.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I agree with that. And I want to talk about
- 1:16Speaker 1: what you're doing to move forward. But before we do that,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I want to play this. This is President Joe Biden
- 1:22Speaker 1: defending his withdrawal to our own Peter Doocy back in
- 1:26Speaker 1: August of 2021.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Listen.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Imagine where we'd be if I had indicated on May
- 1:36Speaker 3: the 1st I was not going to renegotiate.
- 1:41Speaker 4: An evacuation date.
- 1:45Speaker 3: We were going to stay there. I'd have only one alternative.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Pour thousands of more troops back into Afghanistan to fight
- 1:54Speaker 4: a war that we had already won relative to why
- 1:59Speaker 4: the reason we went in the first place.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Your reaction?
- 2:07Speaker 2: Well, hindsight is a horrible thing, but I can say
- 2:11Speaker 2: to you that he was definitely wrong in how he
- 2:14Speaker 2: handled all of that. Yeah. And lives were lost because
- 2:18Speaker 2: of those decision-makings he was making or did not make
- 2:21Speaker 2: from May onward. Yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 1: It doesn't sound like he learned a lot from that.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And as you said, we also left billions of military
- 2:29Speaker 1: equipment and weapons there. Let's talk about moving forward what
- 2:33Speaker 1: you've done to deal with this pain. You've started R2
- 2:36Speaker 1: Factor in honor of your son. Tell us about it.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Well, the Respect and Remember Foundation, also known as R2 Factor,
- 2:48Speaker 2: is a way of giving back to our community, especially
- 2:52Speaker 2: our military community. We start when they are in JROTC
- 2:56Speaker 2: and ROTC programs, when they're active, and then as they
- 3:00Speaker 2: fall into being a veteran or a fallen family. We
- 3:04Speaker 2: make sure that we take care of our military. Recently,
- 3:07Speaker 2: we had the TPT 9000 Memorial Workout. Hundreds and hundreds
- 3:11Speaker 2: of active military joined with us as we remembered Ryan
- 3:17Speaker 2: and his brothers and sisters we lost.
- 3:21Speaker 1: What else does the foundation do specifically so people can
- 3:24Speaker 1: understand and hopefully contribute to this wonderful cause?
- 3:30Speaker 2: Well, one of our first missions is to make sure
- 3:33Speaker 2: that we give honor to JRTC enlisting. Ryan was a
- 3:37Speaker 2: JRTC cadet. He went straight into the military from high school.
- 3:42Speaker 2: And so for those children who decide that they're going
- 3:44Speaker 2: on into the military, we want to give them a $ 1, 000 scholarship.
- 3:48Speaker 2: to say thank you. One per each school chosen by
- 3:51Speaker 2: their commander. The other thing is, is that we want
- 3:54Speaker 2: to make sure as these active military men and women
- 3:58Speaker 2: are in, that we send care boxes to them. So
- 4:00Speaker 2: if somebody wants to write a card, send a note,
- 4:04Speaker 2: some kind of a special package, we will try our
- 4:07Speaker 2: best to get it out to those men and women
- 4:09Speaker 2: out there who are serving. And then we take a
- 4:11Speaker 2: vet fishing when they finish up. We just want to
- 4:14Speaker 2: take a vet out fishing. If you want to help
- 4:16Speaker 2: us to get a vet out there fishing with his
- 4:18Speaker 2: fishing buddies who are also veterans, that's awesome. You can
- 4:22Speaker 2: contribute to the r2factor. org, and we will make sure that
- 4:26Speaker 2: that money is used 100% toward our military.
- 4:30Speaker 1: What a beautiful cause and what a beautiful way for
- 4:32Speaker 1: you to direct your sadness and your grief. We're just
- 4:36Speaker 1: so proud of you. Thank you, Paula. God bless you
- 4:39Speaker 1: and God bless your family. Army Staff Sergeant Ryan Knauss
- 4:44Speaker 1: was just 23 years old. He was laid to rest
- 4:47Speaker 1: with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Thank you, Paula.
- 4:52Speaker 1: We'll be right back.
