- 0:00Do you ever have one of those days where your meds hit just
- 0:02right, you're moving smooth, you're feeling strong, and you
- 0:06almost forget that you even have Parkinson's, and you think, wow,
- 0:12I'm really doing great today. And then three hours later, it's
- 0:16like somebody pulled your batteries out?
- 0:19Yeah, that's what I call the dopamine illusion.
- 0:23Because sometimes feeling amazing isn't the victory, it's
- 0:27the setup. Stick around.
- 0:30Because today we're going to talk about why that happens,
- 0:32what your brains actually doing, and how to keep your balance
- 0:36before the crash hits. Welcome to Living with
- 0:40Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 0:44Real talk, real life, real community with Bryce Perry.
- 0:48Let's begin. Hey everyone, welcome back to
- 0:52Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 0:56Now, if you're new here, I'm Bryce.
- 0:59And around here we talk about the real stuff.
- 1:03We laugh about it, we learn from it, and we live through it
- 1:07together. Now, if that sounds like
- 1:11something you need in your week, why don't you hit subscribe?
- 1:14It's free, it helps the channel grow, and it tells the YouTube
- 1:18that Parkinson's stories actually matter.
- 1:22OK, let's get into this. Let's talk about dopamine and
- 1:25why it's both your best friend, excuse me, and your biggest
- 1:29troublemaker. Now, here's the thing.
- 1:31Dopamine isn't really a happy chemical.
- 1:34It's an anticipation chemical. It's what makes you want to
- 1:38move, want to talk, and want to connect.
- 1:41It's that little, hey, something good's coming spark in your
- 1:46brain. Now in Parkinson's, that spark
- 1:50gets weaker, which is why things take more effort.
- 1:54So when your meds hit and that dopamine flows again, your
- 1:57brains like, yes, let's go, right?
- 2:01And that's the moment that you start cleaning, you start
- 2:03organizing, or maybe you start mowing the lawn, fixing the car,
- 2:07answering emails because you feel alive again.
- 2:09You're you're signing up for things that you would normally
- 2:11wouldn't. And honestly, I get it, because
- 2:14it feels incredible to just feel normal again.
- 2:18But here's where it gets tricky. That burst of dopamine.
- 2:22It doesn't mean you suddenly have more energy, It means that
- 2:26your brains temporarily feels like it does.
- 2:30It's like your body giving you a free sample of normal, but it
- 2:34still expects payment later. So what do we do?
- 2:39We spend it all because we're human.
- 2:41We finally feel good and we don't want to waste it, but
- 2:45that's when the dopamine illusion gets us and the crash
- 2:49starts creeping in. Now here's how I explain it.
- 2:54Dopamine's got a credit card and, and every time you push
- 2:58through, every time you overdo it, every time you skip a rest
- 3:01or you're you're swiping that card and the bill, it always
- 3:06shows up. Let me tell you, I've learned
- 3:09the hard way so many times. Last week, for example, I had
- 3:13one of those great days. Everything was firing right?
- 3:16And so I thought, perfect, I'll tackle everything that I've been
- 3:19putting off. Winter's coming, right?
- 3:22I cleaned, I worked, I reorganized, I even decided to
- 3:26make dinner. And by mid afternoon, I could
- 3:28barely move. And that's when it hit me.
- 3:32I just spent tomorrow's dopamine today.
- 3:37So now when I feel that high, I tried to stop and I asked myself
- 3:41this, do I really need to do all of this right now, or do I just
- 3:46finally feel capable again? Because those two are two very
- 3:50different things. And that's the tricky part,
- 3:52right? Because in that moment, your
- 3:55brains like cheering you on. It's like, yeah, let's do it.
- 3:58It feels like motivation, but really it's momentum on credit.
- 4:05Now, let's get a bit nerdy for a second.
- 4:06And I promise this one's worth it.
- 4:09When dopamine floods the brain, it creates that rush of movement
- 4:14and and motivation. But if you use it too quickly,
- 4:19the receptors that receive dopamine, they start to shut
- 4:22down for protection. That's why you suddenly feel
- 4:25tired and stiff and foggy. Your system is literally
- 4:29resetting. So it's not that you lost it or
- 4:33did something wrong. Your brain just went, OK that
- 4:36was fun, but we're closing early tonight.
- 4:39And here's the cool part. Balance brings it back faster.
- 4:43When you learn to pace yourself, your dopamine system stabilizes.
- 4:48It stops swinging between everything and nothing.
- 4:52So weirdly enough, resting isn't being lazy, it's actually
- 4:56dopamine training. Oh, I've got some big ones
- 4:59today. Now I'll be honest, this took me
- 5:02years to figure out because I'm a doer.
- 5:05When I feel good I want to do things.
- 5:07I go all in. But every time I overdid it, I
- 5:11paid for it later. So I started experimenting with
- 5:15what I call steady state living. Big words today.
- 5:20Steady state living is basically pacing on purpose.
- 5:23Instead of trying to stretch my on times as long as I possible,
- 5:27I focus on keeping my energy consistent.
- 5:30Now that means like short bursts of activity, planned rest
- 5:35breaks, music or humor in between tasks to reset my brain.
- 5:40Think of it like learning to surf.
- 5:42You don't fight the waves, you ride them.
- 5:45At least that's what I hear. When I started doing that, I
- 5:49noticed something wild. My off times weren't as brutal
- 5:52anymore because I wasn't draining the tank every time I
- 5:55felt full. And that's the secret.
- 6:00Balance isn't boring, it's freedom with a strategy.
- 6:05Now Speaking of balance, Carmen's got her own take on the
- 6:09dopamine days, so this is what she asked me to tell you.
- 6:13You can always tell when Bryce's dopamine kicks in.
- 6:16He goes from zero to full renovation mode in about 5
- 6:19minutes. I just stand back and I think,
- 6:21OK, let's see how long this lasts.
- 6:26I used to try to stop him. I tell him to rest or pace
- 6:29himself, but that just made him want to do it more.
- 6:33That's the rebel anyway. So now I don't manage the
- 6:37dopamine, I manage the recovery. I make sure he's got, you know,
- 6:42got food ready. I have food ready for him, space
- 6:44to crash and nothing important later on that day because the
- 6:48goal isn't to stop the highs, it's to soften the fall.
- 6:52Wow. And that honestly is one of the
- 6:55best lessons I've learned from her.
- 6:58You can't just stop the highs. You shouldn't, but you can
- 7:01prepare for them because when you do, you start enjoying those
- 7:06good days without paying the price afterwards.
- 7:11That was really good, Carmen. I went right in.
- 7:12I was so excited. I went right into my own little
- 7:14salute wee there, but that was really good.
- 7:16I appreciate that. Now that was Carmen's care
- 7:20partner corner. Now, if we have a ton of people
- 7:22that are doing this journey alone, I call them my solo
- 7:25warrior. So now for the solo warriors out
- 7:28there, I've got one for you. Now there's something, there's
- 7:33something one of our inner circle members, not one of a
- 7:36friend of mine told me one time and it really struck me and they
- 7:39called it the their dopamine anchor.
- 7:42It's just a short list of small grounding activities that you
- 7:46can do when you hit that crash. Things that remind your brain
- 7:49that you're OK. Stuff like folding laundry or
- 7:52making tea, watering plants, calling a friend, journaling, or
- 7:57just playing music. The idea is when when you do
- 8:02something familiar, your brain releases predictive dopamine.
- 8:07It calms your system, and it helps you stabilize.
- 8:11So if you live alone, write down your own list of your anchors.
- 8:15OK. And when that wall hits, instead
- 8:17of saying, what's wrong with me, ask which anchor can I grab
- 8:21right now? Because that's how you pull
- 8:24yourself back into rhythm. That's exactly small tasks that
- 8:28you know. You see, the dopamine illusion
- 8:30isn't about weakness. It's about misunderstanding how
- 8:34our brains work. Feeling great.
- 8:37It doesn't mean that you're cured.
- 8:39It means that your system is firing for now.
- 8:42And that's all we want, right? Just to fire your system firing.
- 8:45And that's worth celebrating. But the real win is learning how
- 8:49to stretch that balance, how to take a good day and turn that
- 8:54good day into a good week. Because Parkinson's is
- 8:59unpredictable, but your response doesn't have to be.
- 9:04That's just an amazing way to think about it.
- 9:07Parkinson's is all over the place, but we can learn to have
- 9:10our responses. So no matter what it throws at
- 9:12us, we have a response. Oh, wait a minute.
- 9:14This is this. There's my anchor.
- 9:16Wait. This is this.
- 9:17This is what you know, that's how you win.
- 9:19That's what takes a good day and makes a good week.
- 9:22And that's what takes a good week and makes a good month.
- 9:24You know what I mean? OK, if you made it this far, you
- 9:30unlocked today's pricism, and I really like this one.
- 9:34And if you're ready, here it is. OK Dopamine.
- 9:41No, dopamine is like a good salesman.
- 9:44It makes big promises, it closes the deal fast, and then it
- 9:48disappears when it's time for the paperwork.
- 9:53I like that one. OK, this week try living in
- 9:57rhythm instead of in reaction. And when you wake up feeling
- 10:01great, don't Sprint. Glide.
- 10:05Enjoy it, protect it and spread it out.
- 10:09And if you do happen to crash, just remember it's not your
- 10:12fault, it's just chemistry reminding you that you're
- 10:16actually human. Comment below and tell me this,
- 10:22what helps you keep your balance when your dopamine wants to
- 10:25Sprint? I read every single one.
- 10:27I love learning from you all. I'm a little behind getting back
- 10:30to everybody, but I will trust me.
- 10:33And you know what? If you want to go deeper, join
