- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to the Sean O'Connell show.
- 0:18Speaker 2: On ESPN, 700 and 92, one FM middle of the.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Week.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Beautiful, gorgeous, incredible early fall, late summer day here in
- 0:27Speaker 2: salt Lake city.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Can't ask for anything better from a weather perspective. Interesting
- 0:46Speaker 4: sports week. BYU back at action. Utah on the bye.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Mammoths start their season tomorrow night against the Chicago Blackhawks.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Utah Jazz in training camp. And we're about three weeks
- 0:58Speaker 4: away from jazz basketball. So everything's coming up sports fan
- 1:03Speaker 4: right now. If you live here in the shadow of
- 1:07Speaker 4: the Wasatch Mountains. Dan Sorensen is going to join us
- 1:12Speaker 4: on the show today. It's a Ute's own Wednesday. I
- 1:15Speaker 4: failed to mention that in the tease you've been hearing on,
- 1:17Speaker 4: on the air. So Dan Sorensen in 30 minutes, Jeff
- 1:21Speaker 4: Schwartz is going to join us at noon because we
- 1:23Speaker 4: missed him yesterday. And then at one o'clock between the pipes,
- 1:27Speaker 4: the return of between the pipes, Adrian Denny, our Utah
- 1:30Speaker 4: mammoth insider swings by. We talk about A new Mammoth
- 1:35Speaker 4: roster with mostly continuity from a playoff team last year,
- 1:39Speaker 4: but some important new additions. Vincent Trocek, Daniil Boot, Dimitri
- 1:44Speaker 4: Simishev are both on the opening day roster for the Mammoth,
- 1:47Speaker 4: and that's something that we'll get to as we march
- 1:50Speaker 4: on with the Wednesday edition of the show. We did
- 1:54Speaker 4: stumble upon this yesterday. It was a conversation when we
- 1:57Speaker 4: were doing crosstalk about the eventualities of you know, change
- 2:04Speaker 4: in college football. And we, we found the jumping off
- 2:08Speaker 4: point for this with a question I put out yesterday
- 2:12Speaker 4: on the protect college sports act as it is currently constructed.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And I gave you the bullet points yesterday. Do you,
- 2:19Speaker 2: do you support it?
- 2:22Speaker 4: There were some slim margins in this one, 50, roughly
- 2:27Speaker 4: 57% of you do support the protect college sports act
- 2:31Speaker 4: as currently constructed. With five years to play five, one-time
- 2:36Speaker 4: free transfer for players, conferences, and their expansion capped at
- 2:40Speaker 4: 20 total teams, which I think is actually something that
- 2:44Speaker 4: does not favor the University of Utah or BYU or
- 2:48Speaker 4: Utah State, although they're a lot further down the line there.
- 2:52Speaker 4: A revenue-sharing salary cap would go up from $ 21. 5- ish million,
- 2:55Speaker 4: and that's going to grow 3% to 5%. over the
- 3:01Speaker 4: ensuing years probably, even if they keep it where it's at.
- 3:04Speaker 4: But the Protect College Sports Act is proposing that you
- 3:08Speaker 4: put a hard cap at $ 49- ish million and you leave
- 3:10Speaker 4: it there.
- 3:10Speaker 2: $ 49 million.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Is a bridge too far for Utah. It's a bridge
- 3:17Speaker 4: too far for BYU. It's a bridge too far for
- 3:20Speaker 4: every conference team in the big 12, with the exception,
- 3:23Speaker 4: it looks like of Texas tech, but even Texas tech
- 3:26Speaker 4: isn't spending that much this year, according to the research
- 3:30Speaker 4: done by the writers at the athletic there's four, five,
- 3:34Speaker 4: six teams that are in that neighborhood. They're all big
- 3:37Speaker 4: 10 and sec teams. That's the Texas's of the world, Oregon,
- 3:42Speaker 4: Ohio state, right? And we could pull up the numbers again,
- 3:46Speaker 4: but that salary cap I found to be problematic. And
- 3:50Speaker 4: when I asked Spence if he supported it, he said, well, no,
- 3:54Speaker 4: because I don't think that the 20-team cap favors the
- 3:59Speaker 4: local teams, which I agree with. And he also wants
- 4:03Speaker 4: there to be an acceptance of the eventuality that we
- 4:07Speaker 4: get to the AFC-NFC model, the super conference model. He said,
- 4:13Speaker 4: in that case, Utah and BYU are safe. I said, well,
- 4:17Speaker 4: hold on. How many teams are we talking about? And
- 4:19Speaker 4: that is where the argument comes in. So the question
- 4:22Speaker 4: I put out yesterday, if college football settles on a
- 4:27Speaker 4: big 40, I think it's too small. But if they
- 4:31Speaker 4: settle on a big 40, meaning the Protect College Sports
- 4:35Speaker 4: Act folks get their way and the Big Ten and
- 4:37Speaker 4: the SEC, that's who we're really talking about here, They
- 4:41Speaker 4: have to stay at 20 teams, 20 teams each, and
- 4:44Speaker 4: they become ultimately the AFC and the NFC of elite,
- 4:49Speaker 4: elite power football. Would Utah and BYU make the cut
- 4:57Speaker 4: in that case? This is a question I've been chewing
- 5:00Speaker 4: on since the end of the show yesterday. The poll
- 5:03Speaker 4: question will be up for a couple more hours. So
- 5:06Speaker 4: go to at real OC sports and vote on it. Eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 5:10Speaker 4: zero 700 and vote on it. We're not going to
- 5:12Speaker 4: spend too much time on it today, but I wanted
- 5:15Speaker 4: to make sure you're aware that it's up. And I
- 5:17Speaker 4: wanted to get your thoughts. If you have them eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 5:20Speaker 4: zero 700. Are you confident Utah and BYU Utah and,
- 5:25Speaker 4: or BYU make the cut at a 40 team cap
- 5:29Speaker 4: for elite college football?
- 5:32Speaker 1: I think I agree with you OC based on, conversation
- 5:36Speaker 1: he had with Spence and crosstalk yesterday. I, I don't
- 5:40Speaker 1: feel very good about that for Utah and BYU.
- 5:43Speaker 2: If you assume, and I think we do have to
- 5:44Speaker 2: assume this.
- 5:45Speaker 4: If you assume that the big 10 and the sec
- 5:49Speaker 4: are not kicking any members out, even in a, a
- 5:54Speaker 4: grand reorganization of college football, that would effectively leave six
- 5:59Speaker 4: openings between the 18 already in the big 10 and
- 6:03Speaker 4: the 16 already in the sec. Well, we know that
- 6:09Speaker 4: Notre Dame gets one of those openings. We know that
- 6:13Speaker 4: Miami gets one of those openings. I think most people
- 6:17Speaker 4: assume Clemson gets one of those openings, probably some combination
- 6:24Speaker 4: of North Carolina, Duke, Florida state, One of those openings,
- 6:29Speaker 4: Texas tech is going to do whatever is necessary to
- 6:33Speaker 4: buy their way into one of those openings.
- 6:35Speaker 1: You were good to mention SMU has already done. What's
- 6:38Speaker 1: necessary to buy into power for without getting anything back
- 6:42Speaker 1: for it. So they, they would, as long as their
- 6:45Speaker 1: boosters have even more money to do that, they will
- 6:50Speaker 1: do the same thing to get into this super league.
- 6:53Speaker 2: So would, would Utah and BYU make sense? Yes, of course.
- 6:57Speaker 4: For obvious reasons, the television ratings on both teams really good,
- 7:02Speaker 4: especially when they're playing power football. We have a long
- 7:05Speaker 4: track record of that with Utah being in the PAC 12.
- 7:07Speaker 4: We have a relatively short, but still robust sample size
- 7:12Speaker 4: for BYU.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Now that they're playing big 12 games.
- 7:15Speaker 4: And obviously they have the national footprint that comes with
- 7:19Speaker 4: being a religiously affiliated school. There are members of the
- 7:23Speaker 4: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in every single
- 7:25Speaker 4: state in the union. I mean, ESPN, who is going
- 7:30Speaker 4: to be one of the main drivers of this, ESPN
- 7:32Speaker 4: thinks highly of BYU and had an independent television contract
- 7:36Speaker 4: with BYU. It wasn't overly lucrative, but they were deemed
- 7:41Speaker 4: important enough by the, at the time, power player network.
- 7:45Speaker 2: To say, yeah, we'll give them a little bit of something.
- 7:48Speaker 4: So it's not as cut and dry as I think
- 7:50Speaker 4: we wish it was because, okay, so we've gotten up
- 7:53Speaker 4: to the SMU mention.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Well, what about Arizona and Arizona State?
- 7:59Speaker 1: Right?
- 7:59Speaker 2: Those are two teams that are in part of a, of.
- 8:02Speaker 4: A gigantic megalopolis down there in Southern Arizona. That is
- 8:06Speaker 4: a huge population base that it has all four major
- 8:09Speaker 4: sports teams. Wait, we took the hockey team, three of
- 8:12Speaker 4: the four major sports teams. That was, that was, that
- 8:15Speaker 4: was not nice by you. That was a little bit
- 8:17Speaker 4: me or Arizona transplants or anyone who listened in Arizona.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I apologize on behalf, but yeah, we did take it.
- 8:23Speaker 2: We took your hockey team.
- 8:24Speaker 4: We, the Bay area teams are going to want to
- 8:27Speaker 4: say something about it. I think that you could probably
- 8:30Speaker 4: beat them out. unless Stanford decided to use some of
- 8:34Speaker 4: its muscle, some of its endowment, some of its real,
- 8:38Speaker 4: like it's actual standing in college football to say, no, no, no, no, no.
- 8:43Speaker 4: You cannot leave us out. And maybe, you know, like
- 8:46Speaker 4: they've got, they've got tight friendships with Notre Dame and
- 8:49Speaker 4: a longstanding rivalry there. They've got tight friendships with USC
- 8:52Speaker 4: and a longstanding rivalry there that if advocates, it wouldn't
- 8:57Speaker 4: be required.
- 8:58Speaker 2: It would be required that they.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Sign off on, no, we're going to pour a bunch
- 9:03Speaker 4: of money into our football program and make it a
- 9:05Speaker 4: real thing. But if it stays at 40, and I
- 9:09Speaker 4: don't think it will, but if it stood at 40,
- 9:11Speaker 4: I don't know how confident we can be.
- 9:13Speaker 3: So 877-353-0700.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Right now, 57% of people say, yes, I think that
- 9:14Speaker 4: Utah and BYU make the cut on a mega conference
- 9:15Speaker 4: of 40. I wish I was as confident as 57%
- 9:29Speaker 4: of you. I fall in the more likely 43% that say, ooh, look,
- 9:35Speaker 4: maybe one or the other. I don't know if both
- 9:37Speaker 4: can get in. Because, of course, everybody at that point
- 9:41Speaker 4: is scrambling. And I'm failing to mention probably, like, I mean,
- 9:45Speaker 4: Tulane wants to be in that conversation. Colorado wants to
- 9:49Speaker 4: be in that conversation. Who else is out there in
- 9:52Speaker 4: the big 12? I mean, are we just assuming, are
- 9:55Speaker 4: we assuming that Oklahoma state and the Kansas schools are
- 9:58Speaker 4: just going to be like, Oh, I guess we're left
- 9:59Speaker 4: behind now.
- 10:00Speaker 1: That's the other thing to consider here. Football's the driver,
- 10:04Speaker 1: but you mentioned Kansas. Are they going to want to
- 10:08Speaker 1: have teams that are only okay or worse at football?
- 10:13Speaker 1: If they are blue bloods in basketball, in men's basketball too. I,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I can imagine Duke and Kansas getting some consideration, even
- 10:21Speaker 1: if their football programs stink. And right now, by the way,
- 10:24Speaker 1: Duke's program doesn't stink. It's pretty decent right now. Kansas
- 10:28Speaker 1: is kind of stinks. Kansas kind of stinks, but we've
- 10:31Speaker 1: seen Kansas.
- 10:33Speaker 4: In rare occasions, but we've seen Kansas flirt with greatness
- 10:37Speaker 4: on the football field as well.
- 10:38Speaker 2: So put your.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Thoughts into it. Text me 8 7 7 3 5
- 10:41Speaker 4: 3 0 700 at reload. See sports on the tweet machine.
- 10:47Speaker 4: If it's capped at 40, and I don't think it
- 10:49Speaker 4: will be. I think that's why I was somewhat surprised
- 10:52Speaker 4: that the conversation, and it was a five-minute conversation, went
- 10:55Speaker 4: the way it did with Spence because it was like, well,
- 10:57Speaker 4: hold on a minute. 40 feels too small. If you've
- 11:00Speaker 4: settled on and you've decided, all right, we're just doing
- 11:02Speaker 4: super conferences here. We're doing the NFL model. What I
- 11:06Speaker 4: think is actually going to happen is it would be like,
- 11:10Speaker 4: more like 64 teams right now, the power for, if
- 11:13Speaker 4: I'm not mistaken, 68 teams, right? So let's say they
- 11:17Speaker 4: go to 64 teams or maybe they go to 60.
- 11:20Speaker 4: And I think what they would do is they would
- 11:23Speaker 4: just like the NFL, they would regionalize as well as
- 11:27Speaker 4: they could. They would say, all right, so we have
- 11:29Speaker 4: an AFC and an NFC. We've got Western football and
- 11:32Speaker 4: Eastern football. We've got Northern football and Southern football divisions.
- 11:35Speaker 4: And then we're going to do divisions.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And then I think those divisions would look suspiciously like,
- 11:40Speaker 1: football conferences looked in the 1990s for a pre pack,
- 11:46Speaker 1: pre old pack 12s demise. We got to say old
- 11:49Speaker 1: pack 12 now because they're back. I think, I think
- 11:52Speaker 1: that if, if, if my vision comes to pass, I
- 11:57Speaker 1: think what will actually happen is that we'll get back
- 11:59Speaker 1: to like, what are we going to call this this,
- 12:02Speaker 1: this Western division that's got USC and Washington and Oregon.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And then someone would be like, well, it's so far West.
- 12:11Speaker 1: We could call it the Pacific division. And how many
- 12:14Speaker 1: teams are we putting in there?
- 12:15Speaker 2: You know what? We could call it. There's 10 of them.
- 12:18Speaker 1: We could call it the Pacific 10 division.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Original. I love it.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Well, it's not really all that Pacific because we've got
- 12:27Speaker 4: Utah and BYU in here.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Oh, that's fine.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Because what people are going to focus on is Washington
- 12:32Speaker 4: and Oregon and USC and UCLA and Stanford being in there.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Oh, all right. We'll call it that.
- 12:39Speaker 1: What about this one down here in the Southeastern region
- 12:42Speaker 1: of the country?
- 12:42Speaker 2: What will we call that?
- 12:44Speaker 4: I think we could call that the Southeastern division of
- 12:47Speaker 4: the super conference.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Instead of the SEC, it's the SED. The SED. The SED. Yeah.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Look, it's, it's something that we don't have to figure out.
- 12:55Speaker 4: We don't have to worry about because we got a
- 12:57Speaker 4: football season to talk about, but it came up.
- 13:00Speaker 1: So I want your thoughts on it. Eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 13:03Speaker 1: zero 700. One last quick thing on this. Just, I
- 13:07Speaker 1: just wrote down all the names, all the schools that
- 13:09Speaker 1: we just named that will probably be considered. And if
- 13:14Speaker 1: you include Utah and BYU, that's 11 schools for six spots.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And listen, we mentioned SMU. I would hope that Utah
- 13:24Speaker 1: and BYU would be in front of SMU in that line.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I would hope that they would be in front of
- 13:30Speaker 1: Cal and Stanford. I'm not sure they're in front of
- 13:33Speaker 1: anyone else.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Well, I'll tell you this. What would happen if it
- 13:36Speaker 4: came down to that? If it came down to, look,
- 13:40Speaker 4: we got... We gave Notre Dame a spot. We gave
- 13:43Speaker 4: Miami a spot. We gave North Carolina a spot. So
- 13:47Speaker 4: now instead of six, we've got three more spots and
- 13:50Speaker 4: there are eight teams out there.
- 13:52Speaker 2: So who wants the spot?
- 13:55Speaker 4: And it would become a bidding war and that would
- 13:57Speaker 4: be disgusting and ugly, but that's what would happen. And
- 14:01Speaker 4: that by the way, would become one of the most
- 14:04Speaker 4: fascinating cultural discussions in the state of Utah ever because
- 14:11Speaker 4: the LDS church, if they wanted to, could be like, yeah,
- 14:15Speaker 4: we're buying that spot for BYU because BYU and its
- 14:18Speaker 4: athletic arm are a successful PR tool.
- 14:21Speaker 2: The investment funds, not, not any of this, the, the whatever.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I'm not saying it's your tithing money. What I'm talking about.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Is your fast offerings or whatever. It's, it's not anything,
- 14:31Speaker 1: but you know what I mean?
- 14:32Speaker 2: You know what I'm talking about?
- 14:33Speaker 4: Deseret partnerships or the Deseret insurance or ones that own
- 14:37Speaker 4: city Creek, for example, the business arm has enough money
- 14:41Speaker 4: that they could say, you know what? All these profits
- 14:43Speaker 4: we have and this massive slush fund that we have. Sorry,
- 14:47Speaker 4: Cody Campbell. But your new money billionaire status doesn't mean
- 14:51Speaker 4: jack to the brethren. So if we decide that this
- 14:54Speaker 4: is a worthy cause, we are absolutely bidding our way
- 14:58Speaker 4: into the power structure of college sports. And that would
- 15:01Speaker 4: be one of the most controversial, polarizing, fascinating things that
- 15:07Speaker 4: could ever happen with BYU athletics. And then, of course,
- 15:10Speaker 4: if you're Utah, you would be put into a situation
- 15:14Speaker 4: where you're like, hold on a minute. We cannot let
- 15:18Speaker 4: them go somewhere without us. We can't let them buy
- 15:22Speaker 4: the spot and we don't buy the spot. And that's
- 15:25Speaker 4: when private equity, outro capital, put your money where your
- 15:29Speaker 4: mouth is. You better, the whole point of this, like
- 15:35Speaker 4: behind the scenes, the undercurrent of all of this merger
- 15:38Speaker 4: and all of this Crimson Brand Partners and all of
- 15:40Speaker 4: this exploration and innovation.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Premium field level seating. The whole point of all of this.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Was to set Utah up in a situation where when
- 15:51Speaker 4: the Big Ten came a-calling, if they ever did, you're
- 15:54Speaker 4: better prepared. Or when a super conference comes a-calling, you're
- 15:57Speaker 4: better prepared. And if it came down to a bidding war,
- 16:01Speaker 4: it's kind of existential. You either have the money or
- 16:05Speaker 4: you don't. You either are willing to spend the money
- 16:07Speaker 4: or you're not. And you're either buying your way in
- 16:11Speaker 4: or you're watching the world leave you behind.
- 16:14Speaker 2: It's not even a choice.
- 16:15Speaker 4: If you want your school to be serious about athletics,
- 16:18Speaker 4: you would have to be part of that. And the
- 16:22Speaker 4: argument really kind of falls apart for me when we
- 16:25Speaker 4: set that 40-team limit because I don't think it would
- 16:28Speaker 4: make sense for... The real power players, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida,
- 16:37Speaker 4: it wouldn't make sense for them to say, let's cap
- 16:40Speaker 4: it at 40.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Well, why?
- 16:43Speaker 4: Let's cap it at 40 because I like that number 40,
- 16:45Speaker 4: but why can't we do 44?
- 16:47Speaker 3: Well, no, no, no, no.
- 16:48Speaker 2: It's got to be 40.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Well, why can't we do 52?
- 16:50Speaker 2: Why can't we do 48? I think that is.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Where Utah and BYU do get in, but in our
- 16:56Speaker 4: weird situation, nonsensical hypothetical here where we decided as 40,
- 17:03Speaker 4: based on the numbers that the protect college sports act
- 17:05Speaker 4: has provided us so far, it becomes a lot more interesting.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Speaker 3 I really think also, this goes back to the,
- 17:13Speaker 1: when soccer almost when European soccer almost had the super league. Right.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And then the fans revolted and they said, okay, nevermind.
- 17:22Speaker 1: They back then we were talking about college football is
- 17:25Speaker 1: going to have a super league at some point.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Right.
- 17:28Speaker 1: And the first number that people threw out there was
- 17:31Speaker 1: 40 back then too. Plus now we have legislation that
- 17:35Speaker 1: says the two biggest, most important conferences will be capped
- 17:39Speaker 1: at 40 teams.
- 17:39Speaker 2: So that's where it's coming from.
- 17:41Speaker 4: It's not an imaginary number because these, like you think
- 17:45Speaker 4: Ted Cruz didn't talk to Greg Sankey and be like,
- 17:48Speaker 4: if you were going to, if you were really going
- 17:50Speaker 4: to go as big as you're willing to go, what
- 17:53Speaker 4: would it look like? And I bet Sankey was just like, well,
- 17:56Speaker 4: we would want Clemson. We would want, Florida state. We
- 18:02Speaker 4: would want while Miami, North Carolina, we would want Miami
- 18:05Speaker 4: or we would want Duke.
- 18:06Speaker 2: We'd want Miami. If we can get Notre Dame in
- 18:09Speaker 2: our conference.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Great.
- 18:10Speaker 4: And the big 10 was probably asked the same question.
- 18:12Speaker 4: They're like, dude, we got too many already. We don't need,
- 18:14Speaker 4: we don't even want Purdue and Maryland.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Okay.
- 18:17Speaker 1: But if you were really pushing as far as you
- 18:19Speaker 1: could go, how big would you make it?
- 18:22Speaker 2: And they're like, well, we're already 18. That's overinflated.
- 18:24Speaker 1: We could add two more because anyone would be willing
- 18:27Speaker 1: to take Notre Dame and And if Notre Dame wants
- 18:31Speaker 1: a travel partner, Texas tech has got a lot of
- 18:34Speaker 1: money right now.
- 18:35Speaker 4: BYU has got a lot of money right now. Stanford's
- 18:37Speaker 4: got enough money. If they decided to put that into sports,
- 18:40Speaker 4: we could do that. This does, these numbers don't come
- 18:43Speaker 4: out of nowhere when we're talking about the halls of
- 18:46Speaker 4: power in Washington, DC.
- 18:48Speaker 2: So we'll play in this like hypothetical field.
- 18:51Speaker 4: I want to get to some of these reactions here
- 18:53Speaker 4: on the text line, Spencer, 34 77, a very thoughtful texter,
- 18:57Speaker 4: by the way, Spencer, you get 500 James Peterson bonus
- 19:00Speaker 4: points for your very insightful texts.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Don't spend them all in one place. Spencer. He says,
- 19:06Speaker 2: once you lay it out, I don't know.
- 19:07Speaker 4: I don't know how all the powerful four schools don't
- 19:11Speaker 4: all get included. At least have rich alum pushing to
- 19:14Speaker 4: get included. But I wonder what happens to smaller schools
- 19:16Speaker 4: that are trying to ramp up their athletic programs. I'm
- 19:19Speaker 4: a Montana state grad and they've been pouring ridiculous money
- 19:21Speaker 4: into athletics. And I wonder what happens with schools like that.
- 19:25Speaker 4: A second tier of competition would end up being pretty interesting.
- 19:29Speaker 4: I doubt they'd ever consider this, but relegate the bottom
- 19:31Speaker 4: teams from the first year and promote the winner of
- 19:33Speaker 4: the second tier every year would definitely keep things interesting.
- 19:36Speaker 4: That would be the coolest adjustment you could make to
- 19:40Speaker 4: the landscape of college football.
- 19:41Speaker 2: I heard Dan Patrick talking about it.
- 19:43Speaker 4: We've heard for years now people propose a promotion and
- 19:46Speaker 4: relegation thing. The reason that it will never happen. The
- 19:50Speaker 4: reason it will never be signed off on is because
- 19:53Speaker 4: promotion and relegation are non-discriminatory meaning you have, you hire
- 20:00Speaker 4: the wrong coach. You have some type of penalty assessed
- 20:06Speaker 4: to you because of recruiting infractions. Like anything can happen
- 20:10Speaker 4: to where you are now in danger of losing your status,
- 20:14Speaker 4: losing your spot at the top or near the top,
- 20:17Speaker 4: or at least within that power structure. And in college football,
- 20:21Speaker 4: just like in European soccer, if you get bumped down
- 20:25Speaker 4: a division, so in this hypothetical, it would be you
- 20:29Speaker 4: get bumped out of power football and into group of,
- 20:33Speaker 4: at that point, whatever, eight football.
- 20:36Speaker 2: You go from the Big 12 to the Mountain West.
- 20:38Speaker 4: You go mid-major. We already know what that difference looks like.
- 20:41Speaker 4: That is the difference of tens of millions of dollars
- 20:45Speaker 4: per year for your program.
- 20:47Speaker 2: And for most athletic departments, you can kind of survive.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Like Montana State is a really interesting example here because
- 20:54Speaker 4: the Montana schools, they're the biggest show in town in
- 20:58Speaker 4: their small towns.
- 20:59Speaker 5: Right?
- 21:00Speaker 1: Montana athletics and Montana state athletics have been really good
- 21:03Speaker 1: for decades.
- 21:04Speaker 2: They are awesome. They are interesting. They are contenders. They
- 21:07Speaker 2: compete their playoff teams in their world. They're big dogs.
- 21:12Speaker 2: And you know what? It's a great place to be.
- 21:15Speaker 4: If you go back to a spot where NIL is
- 21:17Speaker 4: not a thing. Scholarships are the only thing that matters
- 21:20Speaker 4: like the Montana States and the Montana's and the North
- 21:22Speaker 4: Dakota States and the Boise States.
- 21:25Speaker 2: These schools are in a really good spot.
- 21:27Speaker 4: If they're allowed to just operate in a system that
- 21:30Speaker 4: doesn't require a nuclear arms race of finance, they are
- 21:34Speaker 4: in a really good spot. It's what, football was in
- 21:38Speaker 4: the early two thousands. Like they just get to stay there.
- 21:40Speaker 4: That's what the next division down would be. And players
- 21:44Speaker 4: right now and coaches are allowed to promote or to relegate,
- 21:49Speaker 4: but teams never will be. You're just going to have
- 21:51Speaker 4: to accept the idea that promotion and relegation does not
- 21:54Speaker 4: happen on the club level in American sports, but it
- 21:58Speaker 4: absolutely does happen on the player and on the individual level.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Coaches and players.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Have been promoting and relegating in college sports for decades.
- 22:08Speaker 4: And in the last seven years or so, it's been
- 22:11Speaker 4: more pronounced because we only focus on the promotion part
- 22:15Speaker 4: guys transferring up and having success at the higher level.
- 22:20Speaker 4: There's been just as many, probably even more that have
- 22:24Speaker 4: had to go the other way that they started their careers,
- 22:27Speaker 4: you know, at a power school and they finished their
- 22:29Speaker 4: careers at at incarnate word at incarnate word. They do
- 22:33Speaker 4: the opposite of cam ward who went from incarnate words
- 22:38Speaker 4: to top draft pick. There's a lot of guys who
- 22:40Speaker 4: are supposed to be top draft picks who end up
- 22:42Speaker 4: playing division one, double a football. And there's nothing wrong
- 22:45Speaker 4: with that. That's just the, an exact nature of recruitment development,
- 22:49Speaker 4: science mentalities for individual players, the acumen for picking up
- 22:54Speaker 4: the world of college football as it is.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Just as an example from when I was in college
- 23:01Speaker 1: down in St. George, this was not a power five
- 23:05Speaker 1: at the time player that dropped to at the time
- 23:08Speaker 1: division two football at, at, at Utah tech down in St.
- 23:12Speaker 2: George Dixie state back then.
- 23:15Speaker 1: It was a San Jose state quarterback that wound up
- 23:18Speaker 1: at Dixie state and like the division one, a two
- 23:23Speaker 1: division two, not even one double a like that kind of,
- 23:26Speaker 1: there's stories like that all over the place. and even
- 23:29Speaker 1: more drastic falls of guys who were in the power,
- 23:33Speaker 1: a power league and dropped.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Probably even that low or even lower.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Right? So you're absolutely right. The other reason why that,
- 23:42Speaker 1: that can't be, that's just probably not going to happen.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Promotion relegation as cool as it would be, because I'm
- 23:47Speaker 1: on board with you. I think it would be, it
- 23:48Speaker 1: makes a ton of sense for college football. You gotta have,
- 23:53Speaker 1: you gotta have the power players sign off on it.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Like you're saying, and that, I just don't see an
- 23:58Speaker 1: incentive for them to sign off on it. Like the,
- 24:01Speaker 1: the commissioner, Greg Sankey represents Alabama and he represents Vanderbilt, right?
- 24:07Speaker 1: A big 10, Tony Petitti represents Ohio state and Michigan.
- 24:11Speaker 1: He also represents Rutgers. Rutgers would be scared to death
- 24:15Speaker 1: about getting relegated every year.
- 24:17Speaker 2: And look, I appreciate there's, there's actually a lot.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Of really good feedback coming in on the text line
- 24:22Speaker 4: about a possible promotion relegation about the capping the number
- 24:26Speaker 4: at 40.
- 24:27Speaker 2: And the biggest question here.
- 24:29Speaker 4: In the hypothetical is, is it the currently existing big
- 24:32Speaker 4: 10 and sec, or is it a reorganized big 10
- 24:35Speaker 4: and sec? Because deservedly there are teams in both of
- 24:39Speaker 4: those conferences, especially in the big 10, that you would
- 24:41Speaker 4: just lop off the bottom. You would just trim the
- 24:43Speaker 4: fat and say, Hey, we're really sorry, Northwestern and Maryland
- 24:47Speaker 4: and Purdue and Rutgers, but you guys don't belong here.
- 24:51Speaker 2: You don't get to be here.
- 24:53Speaker 4: And the other thing about it that I want to
- 24:56Speaker 4: get away from, but I find myself falling into every
- 24:58Speaker 4: single time we talk about these things from a competitive standpoint.
- 25:03Speaker 4: And I'm sorry, but that's not how these decisions are made.
- 25:08Speaker 4: There just aren't UCLA did not get into the big
- 25:12Speaker 4: 10 because UCLA is a perennial top 25 football team.
- 25:20Speaker 4: UCLA had been coming off of year after year, after year,
- 25:24Speaker 4: after year of disappointing performance and still got invited because why?
- 25:30Speaker 4: Because they're LA because of their brand, not because, Oh,
- 25:34Speaker 4: look at how good they are at football. And not
- 25:36Speaker 4: even really because the low, look how good they are
- 25:38Speaker 4: in basketball. They got invited to the big 10 because
- 25:44Speaker 4: they held hands with USC and they said, you want
- 25:47Speaker 4: the LA.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Market in the big 10, right?
- 25:50Speaker 4: Colorado got invited to the Pac-12 coming off of abysmally
- 25:54Speaker 4: bad years.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Not year, years.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And Deion Sanders was not the head coach at the time,
- 26:00Speaker 1: so it was not because of Deion or a big
- 26:02Speaker 1: personality like that.
- 26:03Speaker 2: It wasn't a big attention grab.
- 26:05Speaker 4: It was, well, Boulder is Denver, and Denver is an
- 26:08Speaker 4: important metro, right? Utah got in to the Pac-12. Probably
- 26:16Speaker 4: 50-50 split because of.
- 26:19Speaker 4: These are respectable athletic programs and that's a growing television market.
- 26:26Speaker 4: I'll say 33, 33, 33 split respectable programs, important rising
- 26:32Speaker 4: television market and a university that we think fits the
- 26:37Speaker 4: academic profile of the PAC 12 conference.
- 26:40Speaker 2: That's why BYU did not get the invite instead.
- 26:43Speaker 1: And let's not forget that Larry Scott, was going after
- 26:47Speaker 1: Texas at the time too. And when Texas decided to
- 26:51Speaker 1: do their own, do their own network thing and, and
- 26:54Speaker 1: Longhorn network and stay with the big 12, that's also
- 26:59Speaker 1: when the door of opportunity opened.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Up for you.
- 27:01Speaker 4: That's probably the, I mean, that's the most important thing
- 27:03Speaker 4: there because if the PAC 12 gets Texas and Oklahoma instead,
- 27:09Speaker 4: that's the butterfly effect totally different landscape of college football. Now,
- 27:15Speaker 4: if that move ever happens, the PAC 12 is not dead.
- 27:18Speaker 4: If that move ever happens, Utah never gets into the
- 27:20Speaker 4: PAC 12. If that move never happens, Utah is probably
- 27:24Speaker 4: best case scenario. Utah is follows the TCU path where
- 27:28Speaker 4: TCU eventually got invited to the big 12, but Utah
- 27:32Speaker 4: would have been, they would have had to skip their,
- 27:35Speaker 4: their stop in the PAC 12, because if Texas and
- 27:37Speaker 4: Oklahoma took that spot, right. And, and look, it's, You
- 27:41Speaker 4: could make an argument like that always along the way
- 27:47Speaker 4: that there's like Utah after urban Meyer in a promotion
- 27:51Speaker 4: and relegation situation, they would have taken Arizona spot in
- 27:55Speaker 4: the PAC 12. After that, it had been, it had
- 27:58Speaker 4: been a done deal in 2004.
- 28:01Speaker 6: Right.
- 28:01Speaker 2: But that's not the world that we actually get to
- 28:03Speaker 2: live in.
- 28:04Speaker 4: And as much as we like the narrative of, that
- 28:07Speaker 4: our athletic program, our football program specifically earned their way
- 28:11Speaker 4: into the PAC 12 conference by winning their way into
- 28:14Speaker 4: the PAC 12 conference. The truth of the matter is
- 28:17Speaker 4: the machinations that go into decisions like that into conference
- 28:20Speaker 4: realignment only partially consider what your football.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Team is actually doing.
- 28:28Speaker 4: I mean, it sucks, but it's, it's the way things are.
- 28:34Speaker 4: And some, some teams have performed their way into a
- 28:38Speaker 4: higher level.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Some teams have had to kind of split it. Some
- 28:41Speaker 1: teams have just gotten Colorado. Sorry, dude, you got lucky.
- 28:45Speaker 4: You could make a case that there was some luck
- 28:47Speaker 4: involved in Utah situation. Cause Texas and Oklahoma said, no
- 28:50Speaker 4: Colorado at that point, go look up what Colorado was
- 28:54Speaker 4: in 2010.
- 28:55Speaker 2: And 2009 and 2008.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Colorado was not quote unquote deserving of an invite from
- 28:57Speaker 4: an like a sort of floundering power conference to at
- 29:08Speaker 4: that time, a thriving power conference. They didn't, they didn't
- 29:11Speaker 4: quote unquote deserve that, but there are other factors at
- 29:16Speaker 4: play here. And I got a good, this will be
- 29:19Speaker 4: the last thing.
- 29:20Speaker 2: 70 98.
- 29:21Speaker 4: At what minimum number do you feel confident that BYU
- 29:27Speaker 4: and Utah get in?
- 29:29Speaker 2: So 40, I'm not confident. It doesn't take much more
- 29:33Speaker 2: than that. I think at.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Like 40 at 48, it's a definite a hundred percent
- 29:38Speaker 4: at 44. It's still a far more likely than not
- 29:44Speaker 4: at 40.
- 29:44Speaker 2: It makes me really, really nervous. If we get up
- 29:47Speaker 2: to 50, absolutely.
- 29:49Speaker 4: Utah's in that case, you still need to trim some
- 29:51Speaker 4: fat off of the power conferences. All right, we've got
- 29:56Speaker 4: to take a quick break here. We're going to come
- 29:58Speaker 4: back with Dan Sorensen. I'm reading through some more of
- 30:01Speaker 4: the texts. There's really good ones.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Keep sending them in.
- 30:04Speaker 4: We'll get to them in the 1145 segment. It's a
- 30:08Speaker 4: Ute Zone Wednesday. We'll check in with a Ute Zone
- 30:09Speaker 4: insider next on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 30:15Speaker 2: This is my recital. I think it's very vital.
- 30:19Speaker 6: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show for the Murdoch
- 30:22Speaker 6: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Dan Sorensen joining.
- 30:32Speaker 4: Us here in just a second. Sean O'Connell Show on
- 30:35Speaker 4: a Ute Zone Wednesday. We're talking about this hypothetical during
- 30:41Speaker 4: a Utah football bye week of You know, protect college
- 30:45Speaker 4: sports act wants to cap conference expansion at 20 teams
- 30:50Speaker 4: a piece. I guess we should be fair to Brett
- 30:52Speaker 4: your Mark. And, you know, we keep talking about it's
- 30:55Speaker 4: everyone wanting to get into the big 10, the sec, the,
- 30:59Speaker 4: the big 12 could expand and add some value could
- 31:04Speaker 4: steal somebody from somewhere.
- 31:05Speaker 2: I don't know if that, I don't, I do know.
- 31:10Speaker 4: I do know that doesn't, changed the power dynamic in
- 31:13Speaker 4: college football. If you go to a 20 team league
- 31:16Speaker 4: that now includes Boise state and Tulane and North Texas
- 31:21Speaker 4: and whatever else.
- 31:22Speaker 2: But you know, it's interesting to think about.
- 31:25Speaker 4: And the several, you brought up the promotion and relegation possibility,
- 31:29Speaker 4: Spencer on the text line, think about Florida state in 2023,
- 31:34Speaker 4: they went to intent. Can you imagine them being relegated?
- 31:37Speaker 4: And that's a perfect example of of why the powers
- 31:40Speaker 4: that be will never agree to promotion and relegation because
- 31:44Speaker 4: Florida state will look back in its own recent history
- 31:48Speaker 4: and just be like, wait, in this scenario, that year
- 31:51Speaker 4: would have bumped us down to conference USA or the
- 31:54Speaker 4: sunbelt or whatever.
- 31:55Speaker 1: They're going to be like, absolutely bleep it. Not we're
- 31:58Speaker 1: not doing that.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Good conversation happening on the protect college sports act.
- 32:06Speaker 4: And on the idea of potential realignment that it somewhat
- 32:10Speaker 4: protects against, but not fully. Dan Sorensen, Utes Insider. The
- 32:17Speaker 4: brains and brawn behind the Ute Zone operation. Brought to
- 32:21Speaker 4: you by Mountain Home Services. Dan Sorensen, welcome.
- 32:24Speaker 2: How are you, sir?
- 32:24Speaker 3: I'm doing well. How are you doing?
- 32:27Speaker 2: I'm doing all right.
- 32:28Speaker 4: This was an accidental topic that we stumbled upon, which
- 32:32Speaker 4: honestly probably makes it better than anything I can think of.
- 32:35Speaker 3: But....
- 32:36Speaker 4: The protect college sports act caps conference expansion at 20 teams.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Big tens already got 18. As he sees already got 16.
- 32:45Speaker 4: That leaves six more teams. If we went to like,
- 32:49Speaker 4: all right, a 40 team power mega league does Utah
- 32:54Speaker 4: and or BYU make the cut. If you burn it
- 32:57Speaker 4: all down and you say there's going to be 40
- 33:00Speaker 4: big teams in college.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Football, Look, there are two answers to that question. Should
- 33:10Speaker 3: they make the cut? Yes. Are they going to make
- 33:12Speaker 3: the cut? Probably not.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Okay, that's where I came out on it.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Should?
- 33:16Speaker 2: Absolutely. Will?
- 33:19Speaker 3: Tough. I don't trust anybody to do the right thing.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Good for you, Rutgers. You invented college football, but you
- 33:28Speaker 3: haven't done anything in 100 years. You get invited to
- 33:32Speaker 3: the party when others far more deserving get left out.
- 33:35Speaker 3: That's the way life is sometimes, I guess.
- 33:40Speaker 4: Well, thankfully, we don't have to worry about it just yet.
- 33:42Speaker 4: We do have to worry about whether the Protect College
- 33:45Speaker 4: Sports Act does pass as currently constructed. Do you support
- 33:50Speaker 4: this thing as currently constructed, Dan? Because there are some
- 33:53Speaker 4: parts of it that I think are really good for
- 33:55Speaker 4: teams like Utah. There are other parts of it. like
- 33:58Speaker 4: the capping college conference expansion, that maybe down the road
- 34:02Speaker 4: aren't so good for the Utahs of the world. So
- 34:05Speaker 4: do you support the Protect College Sports Act as currently constructed?
- 34:09Speaker 3: As it is currently constructed and written, not by a
- 34:13Speaker 3: long shot. And here's the deal. Something needs to happen.
- 34:17Speaker 3: What's happening right now in college athletics is untenable. Every
- 34:22Speaker 3: single college athletic department across the country, no matter how
- 34:26Speaker 3: big or small, is running in a deficit. Back in
- 34:31Speaker 3: the early 2000s, there was the arms race for facilities
- 34:34Speaker 3: and who could put the most smoothie machines in the
- 34:36Speaker 3: locker rooms and things like that. And And look, this
- 34:40Speaker 3: is an industry that's been run by stupid for far
- 34:44Speaker 3: too long. And something has to change or they're going
- 34:48Speaker 3: to kill the golden goose. And it's the SEC and
- 34:51Speaker 3: the Big Ten's fault. They're just going to kill the
- 34:53Speaker 3: golden goose out of trying to protect their turf and
- 34:56Speaker 3: trying to get too greedy. And something's got to happen.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Something's got to change. And so there's a lot of
- 35:01Speaker 3: things in the act that I do support and I
- 35:04Speaker 3: do agree that Things have to change in terms of
- 35:09Speaker 3: how player compensation works out, how agents for players work out.
- 35:15Speaker 3: But restricting conference expansion is pure political BS. And yeah,
- 35:25Speaker 3: there's a lot of problematic stuff in it. And frankly,
- 35:28Speaker 3: the fact that Cody Campbell and Ted Cruz have been
- 35:31Speaker 3: the ones spearheading this thing tells me everything that I
- 35:34Speaker 3: need to know that it is not. I mean, this
- 35:36Speaker 3: is a bill that is designed to protect Texas Tech
- 35:40Speaker 3: and nobody else. And I do not like it the
- 35:43Speaker 3: way that it is. And I hope it doesn't pass.
- 35:45Speaker 3: I don't have a lot of faith in the elected
- 35:47Speaker 3: leadership of the United States, especially when it comes to
- 35:51Speaker 3: senators and the House of Representatives. But something's got to change.
- 35:57Speaker 3: The bill that they've got is bad, and it doesn't
- 35:59Speaker 3: solve a lot of the fundamental problems. It just locks
- 36:04Speaker 3: in a system that's already fundamentally broken.
- 36:06Speaker 4: The one that bothers me most, I think, is it
- 36:09Speaker 4: kind of snuck in, right? Because they know what they're doing.
- 36:12Speaker 4: They're shouting about and they're waving the... the banner for, Hey,
- 36:16Speaker 4: we're going to calm down this transfer stuff. It's going
- 36:19Speaker 4: to be one transfer from here on out. And then
- 36:22Speaker 4: they're like, also, we're going to increase the salary cap
- 36:24Speaker 4: to $ 49 million.
- 36:25Speaker 2: And it's like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 36:27Speaker 4: There are most teams, most programs can't play in those waters. But,
- 36:32Speaker 4: of course, Ohio State and Texas and Alabama can. So
- 36:36Speaker 4: they're the ones who are just like, yeah, yeah, put
- 36:38Speaker 4: it there, and everyone will be fine with it. That's
- 36:41Speaker 4: not good for Utah. That's not good for BYU. We
- 36:44Speaker 4: looked at the numbers after the Arkansas game. That's really
- 36:47Speaker 4: bad for Arkansas. They can't play in that world.
- 36:50Speaker 3: No. And yeah, it's just it's locking in the status
- 36:54Speaker 3: quo for the few powerful ones. And even look, even
- 36:57Speaker 3: with that, it's not a sustainable thing because you still
- 37:01Speaker 3: got to be going to donors and to be able
- 37:04Speaker 3: to fund a lot of this stuff. And it's that
- 37:06Speaker 3: is not an unlimited resource that can be tapped. Somebody
- 37:12Speaker 3: is going to get sick of it. You know, where
- 37:14Speaker 3: you see it with With, you know, the big BYU
- 37:16Speaker 3: and Utah donors, you know, what happens when dad, who
- 37:19Speaker 3: is a big fan of whatever program passes away and
- 37:22Speaker 3: the kids don't want to be given their money to
- 37:24Speaker 3: the university? Like it's, it's, yeah, it's. It's hugely problematic.
- 37:33Speaker 3: And there are smart people that can figure this out.
- 37:37Speaker 3: The problem is none of those smart people that can
- 37:39Speaker 3: figure this out are actually involved in the creation of
- 37:42Speaker 3: the rules. So I don't know how it's going to
- 37:45Speaker 3: pan out. I don't know which way it's gonna go.
- 37:48Speaker 3: My hope is that it doesn't pass. And then I
- 37:52Speaker 3: hope that they come back to the table in good
- 37:55Speaker 3: faith with people that can really come in and fix
- 37:59Speaker 3: this thing so that this can be sustainable for the ages.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Because there are so many things in place where this
- 38:06Speaker 3: could be the golden age of college football, the best
- 38:09Speaker 3: that we've ever seen across the board. When you've got
- 38:11Speaker 3: a program like Indiana that can win a national championship,
- 38:16Speaker 3: That's a world I want to live in. And so
- 38:19Speaker 3: if we can fix some of these fundamental things, get
- 38:21Speaker 3: the spending under control, make it so that, you know,
- 38:24Speaker 3: you're starting quarterback at Texas tech, isn't making more than
- 38:28Speaker 3: half of the NFL quarterbacks that are starting. I mean,
- 38:31Speaker 3: that's a, that's a, that's a big start for me.
- 38:33Speaker 2: All right.
- 38:34Speaker 4: Let's focus on the youths because this is a really
- 38:37Speaker 4: interesting team right now. 13th ranked in the ranked number
- 38:40Speaker 4: 13 in the country is the proper way to say that.
- 38:42Speaker 2: 4-0 so far.
- 38:45Speaker 4: And look, we've talked plenty about the level of competition
- 38:49Speaker 4: that they have faced, but they have passed every test
- 38:51Speaker 4: and they've done so, I think, with flying colors. How
- 38:54Speaker 4: do they win this bye week, Dan? What's the most
- 38:56Speaker 4: important thing for them to figure out in this off week?
- 39:02Speaker 3: Well, job number one for the players is rest up.
- 39:06Speaker 3: And like Morgan Scully says, live the culture. So make
- 39:10Speaker 3: sure that you're going to treatment, that you're taking care
- 39:14Speaker 3: of your body, that you're getting your sleep in, get
- 39:16Speaker 3: your mind right, get your mind ready. This next stretch
- 39:20Speaker 3: is going to be hugely important. And frankly, a couple
- 39:23Speaker 3: of these games are tougher tests than they look like
- 39:26Speaker 3: at the beginning of the season. You know, at Cincinnati isn't,
- 39:29Speaker 3: I mean, I think Utah wins that game still, but
- 39:32Speaker 3: I don't know that it's necessarily the gimme that I
- 39:34Speaker 3: thought it was preseason, but there's a, there's a big
- 39:37Speaker 3: stretch before the next bi-week. So you get your, your body, right?
- 39:42Speaker 3: You get in, you work on the mistakes, you work
- 39:44Speaker 3: on the film study, offensive line, you're, you're getting, you're,
- 39:47Speaker 3: starting to get locked in, those types of things. That's
- 39:51Speaker 3: job number one for those guys. And then for the staff,
- 39:54Speaker 3: it's all about the recruiting. Look, they're not done with
- 39:57Speaker 3: the class of 2027. We're going to see a little
- 40:00Speaker 3: bit of shifting in there, probably three or four additions
- 40:03Speaker 3: by the time things are said and done. And so
- 40:06Speaker 3: they're still recruiting for 2027. They're absolutely trying to lay
- 40:10Speaker 3: the foundation for 2028. And so it's making sure that,
- 40:15Speaker 3: that they're building for the future. And then that staff
- 40:17Speaker 3: is working on that. So it's, it's, even though there's
- 40:20Speaker 3: no game, it's still a critically important week. It's a
- 40:22Speaker 3: big part of, of the schedule and the plan. And,
- 40:26Speaker 3: and everybody's got to do their part and own their
- 40:28Speaker 3: space like they would on any game week.
- 40:31Speaker 4: Let's let's be silly here. And you get to wave
- 40:34Speaker 4: a magic wand and say, You can change anything. You
- 40:37Speaker 4: can fix anything. You can alter anything about this Utah
- 40:41Speaker 4: team so that when they come out of the bi-week,
- 40:44Speaker 4: they're prepared to make a really significant run and win
- 40:47Speaker 4: a conference championship and the playoff spot.
- 40:49Speaker 2: That comes with that. What are you using that magic on?
- 40:54Speaker 3: Oh, man. That is a really great question. probably the first,
- 41:04Speaker 3: I think that the first thing I do is, you know,
- 41:06Speaker 3: I just point it right at Lance holds claw and
- 41:08Speaker 3: say 10 sacks before the season's done. If that happens, well,
- 41:13Speaker 3: if this defense is a really good defense, I love
- 41:16Speaker 3: what we're seeing as a secondary. I love what we're
- 41:18Speaker 3: seeing out of the defensive line. They're getting pressures from
- 41:21Speaker 3: the defensive end spots. Yes, people are talking about sacks
- 41:25Speaker 3: and no sacks. But the thing that I love the
- 41:27Speaker 3: most is we've only seen it this season a couple
- 41:30Speaker 3: of times where a quarterback has broken containment and run
- 41:34Speaker 3: for big yardage. So even though the defensive ends aren't
- 41:37Speaker 3: getting sacks, they're still getting pressures and And they're holding
- 41:40Speaker 3: their lanes, their lane discipline, and they're holding their edge
- 41:44Speaker 3: has been so good this year. And frankly, it's one
- 41:48Speaker 3: of the reasons why Utah has made life so tough
- 41:50Speaker 3: on quarterbacks, even though it's not the ends that are,
- 41:53Speaker 3: that are getting, getting the sack. So there are good
- 41:55Speaker 3: things happening. If they can finish on top of that
- 41:59Speaker 3: and everybody else is doing their same rate, like this
- 42:02Speaker 3: defense is just going to be tough to go against
- 42:04Speaker 3: for anybody. And, and frankly, I just, I love the offense. Yes.
- 42:08Speaker 3: The offensive line is still coming together. I think their
- 42:10Speaker 3: best football is still ahead of them this season. They're
- 42:13Speaker 3: going to continue to gel. I think that the starting
- 42:16Speaker 3: lineup that we saw against Iowa state is probably the
- 42:20Speaker 3: lineup that we'll see barring, you know, anything weird, like injuries,
- 42:24Speaker 3: the lineup that we're going to see moving forward, which
- 42:27Speaker 3: is exciting to me, especially because Kelvin Obot's going to
- 42:29Speaker 3: get those, those reps. And I think that he's getting
- 42:32Speaker 3: better every week anyway. And, So I, there's a lot
- 42:35Speaker 3: to like about this team. And I think that it
- 42:38Speaker 3: can go really far as long as they stay injury free,
- 42:41Speaker 3: which they have so far. And as long as they
- 42:43Speaker 3: stay focused and go in and, and, and are able
- 42:46Speaker 3: to really win the physicality war on both the offensive
- 42:49Speaker 3: line and defensive line.
- 42:51Speaker 4: Uh, way Sean Parker has been massively impressive, uh, through
- 42:57Speaker 4: these first four weeks. even against Utah state where he
- 43:00Speaker 4: had a relatively quiet game in terms of stat sheet
- 43:04Speaker 4: and production, he played a great game and without the
- 43:07Speaker 4: ball in his hands, he affected the game. And then
- 43:10Speaker 4: he gets rewarded with the Iowa state performance and Holy cow.
- 43:14Speaker 4: It's early still, but we know a lot about way
- 43:17Speaker 4: Sean Parker now and his teammates have been raving, raving
- 43:19Speaker 4: about him. His coaches have been raving about him. Who is,
- 43:23Speaker 4: who is the equivalent of way Sean Parker in Utah
- 43:26Speaker 4: football history? Are we going to talk about him? Like
- 43:28Speaker 4: a Zach Moss, are we going to be saying like
- 43:30Speaker 4: this guy is, you know, as good, maybe he's better
- 43:33Speaker 4: than Devante Booker. What, what are we going to be
- 43:36Speaker 4: saying at the end of this year about way Sean's year?
- 43:38Speaker 3: Yeah. I think that if he continues to have this,
- 43:42Speaker 3: this year, if he puts up touchdowns and rushing yards.
- 43:46Speaker 3: and receiving yards at the pace that he is, A,
- 43:49Speaker 3: he's going to break the all-time season touchdown record at Utah,
- 43:54Speaker 3: and it's well within striking distance for him. He's going
- 43:59Speaker 3: to go for over 1,000 yards. He's going to go
- 44:01Speaker 3: for over 500 yards receiving, and if he has that
- 44:05Speaker 3: year and then decides to head off into the NFL,
- 44:10Speaker 3: I still think that he's going to be in the
- 44:12Speaker 3: pantheon of great backs in Utah football. He'll be on
- 44:16Speaker 3: that Mount Rushmore. I don't know if it's, it's he'll
- 44:19Speaker 3: surpass Zach Moss, but look, when I look at his game,
- 44:22Speaker 3: he reminds me of a combination of Zach Moss and
- 44:24Speaker 3: Joe Williams. And, and, and, you know, there's a lot
- 44:27Speaker 3: to like about that, but, and Utah's had a you know,
- 44:31Speaker 3: countless amazing backs go through the program over the last
- 44:35Speaker 3: 30 years. And he is right up there with the
- 44:38Speaker 3: best of them. I'm astounded at some of the things
- 44:41Speaker 3: that he does. His balance is as good as any
- 44:44Speaker 3: I've ever seen in terms of being able to, to
- 44:47Speaker 3: keep his feet, to move the, what the work that
- 44:50Speaker 3: he did to, to lose the bad weight, to put
- 44:52Speaker 3: on good weight over the off season, to get stronger.
- 44:56Speaker 3: He's just running stronger through tackles. We saw that against
- 44:59Speaker 3: Iowa state and, and, And, and, and really it's, it's
- 45:02Speaker 3: fun to watch him, especially when he's running angry. That
- 45:05Speaker 3: last touchdown he scored where he went right through the
- 45:07Speaker 3: Iowa state defender and, you know, they were pulling nonsense
- 45:10Speaker 3: after plays and, you know, gator rolls and twisting his ankles. And, and,
- 45:15Speaker 3: you know, they found out what happens when you piss
- 45:17Speaker 3: off Dwayne Parker. And it was really fun to watch.
- 45:21Speaker 3: I cannot wait to see what he does over the
- 45:23Speaker 3: course of the rest of the season. There are teams
- 45:25Speaker 3: that are going to be scheming to stop him and,
- 45:28Speaker 3: and he'll take what he can get, but it doesn't matter.
- 45:30Speaker 3: Like you said, if he's receiving, if he's rushing, if
- 45:33Speaker 3: he doesn't have the ball in his hand, he's going
- 45:35Speaker 3: to put guys on their butts. And, and he's just
- 45:38Speaker 3: a joy to watch. It's go back and like, I
- 45:42Speaker 3: encourage Utah fans, like go back and watch the Utah
- 45:44Speaker 3: state game and the, the Iowa state games and just
- 45:47Speaker 3: watch way Sean don't even watch the ball. He's so
- 45:50Speaker 3: fun to, to see what he does regardless of how
- 45:53Speaker 3: he impacts the game. And, and he's tough as nails.
- 45:56Speaker 3: And then you talk to him after practice and he's
- 45:58Speaker 3: a good dude. Like he's happy, go lucky. And he's fun. I, I, it's,
- 46:04Speaker 3: It's rare to see a player that is that talented,
- 46:07Speaker 3: that gets those kinds of results and is that likable.
- 46:10Speaker 3: And so he's an easy guy to cheer for. And
- 46:12Speaker 3: I hope that he just crushes it the rest of
- 46:14Speaker 3: the year.
- 46:14Speaker 4: Dan Sorenson from youth zone for another couple of minutes
- 46:17Speaker 4: here on the Sean O'Connell show quarterback, Devin, Dan pier
- 46:21Speaker 4: is on pace to be better in every meaningful passing
- 46:24Speaker 4: category than he was last year. Uh, his, his rushing
- 46:27Speaker 4: has slowed down pace wise, uh, averaging less than he
- 46:31Speaker 4: did last year. He's off his pace for rushing touchdowns,
- 46:35Speaker 4: for total carries, for yardage, all those things. I don't
- 46:38Speaker 4: necessarily think that's fully a bad thing, especially when you're
- 46:41Speaker 4: trying to keep him healthy for a stretch run and
- 46:43Speaker 4: hopefully a conference championship and maybe a college football playoff and.
- 46:47Speaker 2: All those things.
- 46:49Speaker 4: Is this team getting exactly what they need from Devin
- 46:52Speaker 4: Dampier right now in both his passing game and.
- 46:54Speaker 2: His run game?
- 46:56Speaker 3: Oh, 100%. Look, if Weishan is the heart of this team,
- 46:59Speaker 3: Devin is definitely the brain. And he's the guy that
- 47:02Speaker 3: makes things go. To your point, every meaningful passing stat,
- 47:07Speaker 3: he's improved. And he had great improvement from his New
- 47:09Speaker 3: Mexico season to last year. But his completion percentage is up.
- 47:14Speaker 3: He's got a great touchdown to interception ratio. And frankly,
- 47:17Speaker 3: the only pick that he's thrown is the one where
- 47:20Speaker 3: he got hit by And the ball sailed on him
- 47:23Speaker 3: in the middle of the field. He's making great decisions,
- 47:26Speaker 3: and he's making great decisions in the option game in
- 47:29Speaker 3: terms of when to pull it and run, when not to.
- 47:31Speaker 3: He's still a tough runner in between the tackles. We
- 47:34Speaker 3: haven't seen him really break out, but I love the
- 47:37Speaker 3: fact that that they're using. I think that they're using
- 47:40Speaker 3: bird a lot more for some of those, the big
- 47:42Speaker 3: runs and, and, and the explosive runs that they're, they're,
- 47:46Speaker 3: they're looking to accomplish through the quarterback run game. But,
- 47:48Speaker 3: but wait, but dev is still doing the things he
- 47:51Speaker 3: needs to do to move the chains, to rally his team.
- 47:54Speaker 3: He's calm and cool under pressure. And yeah, yeah. They
- 47:58Speaker 3: had the two drives in the third quarter against Iowa
- 48:01Speaker 3: state that stalled out. And, you know, one of them,
- 48:04Speaker 3: there was a ball that pagan could have caught that,
- 48:06Speaker 3: you know, it would have changed devs stat line pretty
- 48:09Speaker 3: dramatically had he caught that. And, but, you know, both
- 48:12Speaker 3: of those drives, even though they stalled out, they still
- 48:14Speaker 3: got first downs. One of them, they've crossed midfield. It's
- 48:17Speaker 3: not like they're doing three and outs. And, and, and
- 48:20Speaker 3: dev is a big reason for that. He's got a
- 48:23Speaker 3: high degree of trust from his coaches. You can see
- 48:25Speaker 3: the work that he put in, in an off season
- 48:27Speaker 3: and that it's paying off. And he, and once again,
- 48:31Speaker 3: he's another guy, I think his best football is ahead
- 48:34Speaker 3: of him. He's not going to be the dynamic rusher
- 48:36Speaker 3: that we saw at New Mexico. And I don't, and
- 48:38Speaker 3: Utah doesn't want him or need him to be that.
- 48:41Speaker 3: He just needs to be the guy that makes smart decisions,
- 48:44Speaker 3: takes care of the football and moves those sticks. And
- 48:47Speaker 3: he's been absolutely incredible at that this season.
- 48:50Speaker 4: Through four games. Who's Utah's best defensive player.
- 48:57Speaker 3: Oh man. That's a tough one. Rabbit Evans would be
- 49:03Speaker 3: my vote. Or Nate Ritchie, both of them. Look, they
- 49:06Speaker 3: both had the big injuries last year. Nate, you know,
- 49:09Speaker 3: the last couple of years, he's really struggled with tackles.
- 49:12Speaker 3: He hasn't missed a single tackle through four games. He
- 49:15Speaker 3: is playing inspired, tough football, and he's a leader. And
- 49:19Speaker 3: I am so impressed with the growth that we've seen
- 49:23Speaker 3: from him. Rabbit, kind of the same thing. You know,
- 49:26Speaker 3: he's playing that free safety spot and center field. He
- 49:29Speaker 3: got absolutely robbed of the interception against Iowa State, but
- 49:33Speaker 3: he had the amazing one-hander against Utah state that, that
- 49:36Speaker 3: prevented a touchdown and, and, and rabbit is, uh, you know,
- 49:41Speaker 3: another guy, you talk about good guys that are easy
- 49:43Speaker 3: to cheer for, uh, you know, rabbit and his story
- 49:47Speaker 3: and his family story, he's overcome so much adversity in life. And, uh,
- 49:52Speaker 3: he's got such a great attitude and a, just a
- 49:55Speaker 3: great air about him. He's showing leadership and man, is
- 49:58Speaker 3: he playing good football? He's, uh, When you look at
- 50:02Speaker 3: like pass ratings against each of Utah's defensive backs, they're
- 50:05Speaker 3: all pretty low across the board, but rabbit's the lowest
- 50:08Speaker 3: that he's, he's, he's tough in the past game. He's
- 50:12Speaker 3: been an amazing tackler. He's got a couple of sacks
- 50:14Speaker 3: under his belt. He's starting to force turnovers. And I've
- 50:18Speaker 3: been just highly, highly impressed with how he and, and, and,
- 50:22Speaker 3: and Nate Richie have been playing.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Dan, always great to hear from you.
- 50:28Speaker 4: We won't have a game to talk to each other
- 50:30Speaker 4: this week, so I will see you next week against Kansas.
- 50:34Speaker 3: You absolutely will. Thanks for having me on, and, yeah,
- 50:38Speaker 3: have a great week.
- 50:39Speaker 4: That is Dan Sorensen, Utes Insider, Managing Director over at
- 50:45Speaker 4: Utes Zone. Utes Zone Wednesdays are brought to you by
- 50:48Speaker 4: our friends at Mountain Home Services.
- 50:51Speaker 2: All right, quick break here, quick segment next.
- 50:54Speaker 4: I'll read a couple more of your text messages, good
- 50:56Speaker 4: feedback on what we were talking about in the first segment.
- 50:59Speaker 4: To protect College Sports Act, Utah and or BYU making
- 51:03Speaker 4: the cut on further conference expansion. Lots left to get to.
- 51:07Speaker 4: Jeff Schwartz in just a few minutes as well. It's
- 51:09Speaker 4: the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 51:15Speaker 6: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 51:18Speaker 6: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 51:22Speaker 5: All right, we started the show talking about something that
- 51:31Speaker 5: we ended the show with yesterday.
- 51:33Speaker 4: I thought it was maybe going to be a little
- 51:35Speaker 4: bit of a throwaway conversation. It's been much more than that.
- 51:39Speaker 4: If you cap it at 40 teams in power college football,
- 51:42Speaker 4: does Utah make the cut? The 40-team number comes from
- 51:48Speaker 4: legislation that has passed the Senate, is headed to the
- 51:50Speaker 4: House of Representatives, and it is written in the Protect
- 51:54Speaker 4: College Sports Act that the Big Ten could expand to
- 51:56Speaker 4: 20 total teams. Obviously, the SEC could expand to 20
- 52:00Speaker 4: total teams. The Big 12 could as well, but right now,
- 52:04Speaker 4: it's pretty clear that there's a power to that the
- 52:06Speaker 4: ACC and the Big 12 are behind them, and not
- 52:11Speaker 4: slightly behind them, behind them significantly in spending.
- 52:14Speaker 2: And then how do you keep up? Well, you can't
- 52:17Speaker 2: beat them, so you've got to join them.
- 52:20Speaker 4: If it goes down as 40 maximum in those two
- 52:23Speaker 4: power conferences, does Utah and or BYU make the cut?
- 52:26Speaker 2: And I think no.
- 52:27Speaker 4: I think you expand that number to 44, to 46,
- 52:29Speaker 4: to 48, then it's a no-brainer, yes. But at 40,
- 52:34Speaker 4: things are really tight and really dicey, and we were
- 52:36Speaker 4: talking about that. And a lot of people brought up
- 52:39Speaker 4: promotion and relegation as a possibility. This one was interesting
- 52:43Speaker 4: from Kelly on the text line. If you guys are
- 52:47Speaker 4: going to discuss this topic, you need to establish parameters.
- 52:51Speaker 4: There are two ways to discuss it. Pie in the sky,
- 52:53Speaker 4: how do we make it better? What would be interesting?
- 52:55Speaker 4: Or focus on what the blue bloods will allow and
- 52:58Speaker 4: leave it at that, which is not interesting. And look,
- 53:03Speaker 4: not wrong. because what the blue bloods will allow or
- 53:07Speaker 4: won't allow ultimately is going to dictate the shape and
- 53:11Speaker 4: the landscape of college football.
- 53:13Speaker 2: The reason why people.
- 53:15Speaker 4: Are asking for, and even the blue bloods are asking
- 53:17Speaker 4: for the United States government to get involved is because
- 53:22Speaker 4: it actually doesn't serve enough of the college.
- 53:25Speaker 2: Football community, the college sports community at large.
- 53:28Speaker 4: It doesn't serve enough of those parties to have effectively
- 53:33Speaker 4: like eight schools really making the policy for everyone else
- 53:36Speaker 4: and setting the pace for everyone else. Because that pace
- 53:40Speaker 4: is not a realistic one.
- 53:41Speaker 2: If you're not at.
- 53:42Speaker 4: Texas or Texas A & M, if you're not at
- 53:44Speaker 4: Texas tech or you're not at Oregon. And by the way,
- 53:48Speaker 4: I don't know how much longer it lasts for Oregon.
- 53:51Speaker 4: Cause Phil Knight is very serious about Oregon athletics. I
- 53:57Speaker 4: think his family is as well, but are they going
- 53:59Speaker 4: to be as fanatically serious about chasing championships?
- 54:04Speaker 1: This is one of those things where like, do we
- 54:09Speaker 1: love this as much as dad loves it? Do we
- 54:11Speaker 1: love this as much as grandpa loves it?
- 54:14Speaker 2: I don't really know.
- 54:19Speaker 4: Keep weighing in, 877-353-0700 at Real OC Sports.
- 54:24Speaker 2: Shout out to my guy, Drew, watching on the YouTube.
- 54:27Speaker 4: There's not a lot of reason to look at my
- 54:30Speaker 4: ugly face on YouTube, but Drew, I'm glad you're doing it.
- 54:33Speaker 2: Drew's my guy.
- 54:37Speaker 4: You got a big weekend coming up where Utah does
- 54:40Speaker 4: not have a game.
- 54:42Speaker 2: So you don't have a tailgate.
- 54:44Speaker 1: You don't have a general conference tailgate this weekend.
- 54:47Speaker 4: Maybe, maybe I'll say this general conference is a perfect
- 54:52Speaker 4: time to go try something new, perfect your recipes, right?
- 54:56Speaker 4: A perfect time for you to sort of brainstorm and
- 55:00Speaker 4: mastermind what you're going to take to the cookout next
- 55:03Speaker 4: week when Utah is back in action against Kansas. And
- 55:06Speaker 4: as always, 1705 North Redwood Road, Southern Steer Butcher down
- 55:12Speaker 4: there has taken great care of me.
- 55:13Speaker 2: They'll take great care of you.
- 55:15Speaker 4: And if you want to test it out this weekend,
- 55:19Speaker 4: head down there, grab some artisanal meats, humanely raised from
- 55:22Speaker 4: elite sources without all the chemicals, without all the hormones.
- 55:26Speaker 4: That's for your beef, your chicken, your pork. For the
- 55:28Speaker 4: exotic meats, like you want some elk, you want some bison.
- 55:31Speaker 4: They had wild boar down there last time. They had
- 55:34Speaker 4: lobster tails in the fridge, so you could do a
- 55:36Speaker 4: little bit of surf and turf. They've got the rubs.
- 55:38Speaker 4: They have the marinades. And more importantly, and this is
- 55:41Speaker 4: the thing that really matters for me with Southern Steer,
- 55:44Speaker 4: they have the expertise.
- 55:46Speaker 2: Because.
- 55:47Speaker 4: Oftentimes, even if you're going to go and you're going
- 55:49Speaker 4: to head to one of the more expensive grocery stores,
- 55:52Speaker 4: or maybe you head to another butcher that is not
- 55:54Speaker 4: Southern steer and you say, I need an inch and
- 55:58Speaker 4: a quarter bone in ribeye.
- 56:00Speaker 2: I'm going to pay premium for this.
- 56:02Speaker 4: I want the wag. You give me your best cut
- 56:04Speaker 4: of beef, right? Maybe you don't actually know what to
- 56:08Speaker 4: do with that. And you're going to go and you're
- 56:10Speaker 4: going to spend some time and you're going to go
- 56:11Speaker 4: on the internet. You don't have to do that because
- 56:14Speaker 4: Southern steer is, is like your grandma and grandpa's butcher shop,
- 56:18Speaker 4: your neighborhood butcher that knows exactly the right way to
- 56:21Speaker 4: get the most flavor out of these meats, to get
- 56:24Speaker 4: the fat rendered the right way, to make sure that
- 56:27Speaker 4: if you get that rub or you get that marinade,
- 56:29Speaker 4: that you put it on at the right.
- 56:31Speaker 2: Time, you leave it on for the correct amount of time.
- 56:34Speaker 1: They've got the expertise to not only get you an affordable,
- 56:38Speaker 1: healthy family meal, but to.
- 56:40Speaker 2: Make sure that it tastes as well as it possibly can.
- 56:44Speaker 3: This.
- 56:45Speaker 4: is why i love the concept behind southern steer butcher
- 56:48Speaker 4: and i've become a huge believer getting to know dan
- 56:51Speaker 4: and aubrey down there seventeen oh five north redwood road
- 56:55Speaker 4: down in saratoga springs it is worth the trip from
- 56:58Speaker 4: salt lake city doesn't take as long as you think
- 57:00Speaker 4: And it's right out there, very convenient to find on
- 57:03Speaker 4: Redwood Road, 801-895-3101. If you don't want to make the
- 57:07Speaker 4: trip without reserving, call ahead and say, hey, look, I'm
- 57:10Speaker 4: coming for a brisket. I'm coming for a plate of
- 57:12Speaker 4: beef ribs. I'm coming for a couple of ribeyes. Will
- 57:15Speaker 4: you cut those extra thick for me? I'll be down
- 57:17Speaker 4: there in a half hour. And you could tell me
- 57:20Speaker 4: whether I want to get that steak crust to put
- 57:22Speaker 4: on them or I'm just going to go salt and pepper.
- 57:25Speaker 4: Go in, ask a couple of questions, try a couple
- 57:28Speaker 4: of samples. Leave happy from Southern Steer Butcher at 1705
- 57:33Speaker 4: North Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz joins us next.
- 57:38Speaker 4: We'll talk all things college football, a little bit of NFL, too,
- 57:41Speaker 4: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 57:49Speaker 6: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 57:53Speaker 6: best inside of your youths. Let's get back to OC
- 57:56Speaker 6: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 58:03Speaker 4: Welcome to our number two, the Sean O'Connell Show. We
- 58:07Speaker 4: missed him yesterday, so Jeff Schwartz, kind enough to join
- 58:10Speaker 4: us today to talk all things college and pro football.
- 58:14Speaker 4: Former Oregon Duck, longtime NFL veteran. Betting Insider, Jeff Schwartz.
- 58:19Speaker 4: How are you, sir?
- 58:21Speaker 3: I'm good. Thanks for having me on today. I am
- 58:23Speaker 3: in New York City. I got myself a New York slice.
- 58:26Speaker 3: It's a burrow, so I'm ready to go.
- 58:29Speaker 2: You went fully authentic, Michael Scott style?
- 58:33Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. New York slice. I did. I took two
- 58:36Speaker 3: trips ago though. I stayed in a new location. I
- 58:38Speaker 3: stayed near like down between Chinatown and little Italy. And
- 58:41Speaker 3: I did actually go to what is considered like the
- 58:44Speaker 3: best pizza place in the city and got a New
- 58:47Speaker 3: York slice. And it was as delectable as you could
- 58:50Speaker 3: ever imagine.
- 58:51Speaker 4: It's hard to like, I get paralysis by analysis in
- 58:54Speaker 4: New York city sometimes because there are too many options
- 58:58Speaker 4: of what's supposed to be incredible food.
- 59:00Speaker 2: And I'm like, wait, Sushi? No. I should get pizza
- 59:03Speaker 2: while I'm here. No. There's 14 different... I need a bagel. Well, crap.
- 59:07Speaker 4: Which bagel spot do I go to? So I'm glad
- 59:11Speaker 4: you found what you need.
- 59:12Speaker 3: I'll be, I'll get a bagel in the morning as
- 59:13Speaker 3: I always do. The pizzas are here because it's so thin.
- 59:17Speaker 3: Like it feels light, lighter than like most pizza, which
- 59:20Speaker 3: is nice. Cause like you can have a couple of
- 59:21Speaker 3: slices and it doesn't sort of wait. And then just
- 59:23Speaker 3: walk it off. Just go walk afterwards. Like it's, I
- 59:26Speaker 3: like being here for the little time I am. Like
- 59:28Speaker 3: I couldn't live here, but I come for 24 hours.
- 59:31Speaker 3: I'll walk like five miles today. I'll get some food.
- 59:35Speaker 3: I'll wake up in the morning, go to work and
- 59:37Speaker 3: fly home.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Do you ever get recognized on the street as a
- 59:40Speaker 2: former giant?
- 59:42Speaker 3: No.
- 59:42Speaker 2: Do you ever get recognized on the street as just
- 59:45Speaker 2: an actual giant?
- 59:48Speaker 3: I do.
- 59:48Speaker 6: Yes.
- 59:48Speaker 3: They said, are you an actual giant? I was like, yes, yes.
- 59:50Speaker 3: You got me. My size is like, are you big foot?
- 59:53Speaker 3: I'm like, yep. You got me. They know, they know,
- 59:56Speaker 3: they already know.
- 59:58Speaker 2: It makes sense.
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: The protect college sports act has inexplicably dominated our conversation
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: the last day. Do you support the bill as it's
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: currently constructed, Jeff?
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: No. No. Because the government should stay the heck out
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: of sports. Like, it's so funny to me. So if
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: I told you or anyone listening, right, you have a
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: non-government job, okay, and you are in favor of the
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: government capping your wages for your job, like you're like
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: fishing out there, you're okay if the government goes, you
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: know what, they make too much money for my liking.
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: We're going to set a cap on their wages. That's
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: what they're doing. They're setting a cap on what the
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: college athletes can make. It's very un-American. And I don't
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: know why people support it. They're giving antitrust exemptions and
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: protections to college sports. you know, like some of it
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: is fine. I think you will limit portal stuff. It's okay.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: But the fact is like, this is just really un-American
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: to do that. And I don't know why people seem
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: okay with capping the wages. I get, you might not
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: like that. They tell us how to make so much money,
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: but that's a free market issue, right? If you want
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: there to be a cap, guess what? Get a bunch
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: of bargaining agreement done, right? Make the players join a union.
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: I mean, makes a strong word, but you know, negotiate
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: to replace our union. They don't show that into why
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: would they have all the leverage right now. But like
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: the idea, Sean, that the government would cap the wages
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: of a private citizen, essentially. But yeah, yeah. They, they
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: cap the wages for what congressmen can make. Congressmen can wait.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: Of course they do the government jobs, but this is
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: silly that people support this at all.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: There was a lesser talked about amendment proposed that would
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: have capped coaches earnings at $ 5 million per year. And
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: it almost passed. I'm sure you saw this. It was
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: a very close vote.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: It was like.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: 55 to 43 or whatever.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: What's the math on that? It was close.
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: And you could see Nick Saban reacted to it. A
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: lot of people, I think a lot of coaches clutched
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: up a little.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: We're like, wait, hold on a minute.
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: Because they all seem to want some sort of regulation
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: and cap on player earnings and things like that. But
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: then when A politician said, all right, here's my amendment.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: Let's cap coaches' earnings at $ 5 million. Coaches immediately were like, no, no, no, no, no,
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: we can't do that.
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: Of course. But, you know, I've actually thought about the
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: coach salary issue for a little bit, Sean. You know,
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: this week, the Lincoln-Riley, you know, issue, you know, that issue, whatever.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: We're going to beat them too bad. They want to
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: fire Lincoln-Riley now. That was a bad decision by us.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: Just beat them by, like, one or two, and they
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: keep Lincoln-Riley forever. You know, we're making so much money, right?
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: And you think to yourself, okay, how many coaches are
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: really worth the $ 13 million they're getting paid, right? Sig,
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: obviously worth it, right? Kirby Smart's worth it. But at
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: some point, like these coaches make so much money, how
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: are we getting the return on the investment on the coach?
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: And I do wonder if there's going to be a look,
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: a reckoning at some point, like USC will say, you
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: know what? We're taking the best coach who makes $ 8
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: million a year. You know, it just, it's a lot
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: of money, man. And I'm not saying that coaches don't,
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: you know, they negotiated, they, they, they, you know, they've
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: earned it, I guess, by negotiation, but it is a
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: lot of money, Sean, they're paying these coaches a lot
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: of money. And it feels like at some point there's
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: going to be a time that there has to be
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: maybe a pullback.
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: What would the number on a big 10 and sec
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: expansion have to be in order to, for all of
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: us here in the state of Utah to feel good
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: that Utah and BYU are on the right side of
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: the line. They get invited to the party because at 40,
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: I'm going to expand it.
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: Are we still expanding again? Is that happening?
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: Well, part of this bill is you can only expand
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: to 20 teams total, right?
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: And if you're an Oregon fan, you don't care. You're
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: already on the right side of the line.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: If you're a Utah fan, a Texas Tech fan, if
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: you're a Miami fan, and you think eventually that the
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: surviving power structure is going to be the SEC and
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: the Big Ten and whoever gets to be part of
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: that club, then you're not liking the 20-team maximum because
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: the Big Ten and Utah have had conversations and there's
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: an academic fit there. And there's been some flirtation and
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: probably some aggressive chasing from Utah, but the big 10
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: is not going to save a spot for Utah.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: If they've only got two left, right?
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: They already have 18 teams and the sec that wouldn't
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: make any sense regionally or any other way. So I
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: think it's different when you're talking about those fan bases, Colorado,
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: the Arizona schools, Stanford and Cal Miami, Florida state, like
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: They're going to get invited to the SEC, but what
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: about Louisville? So what is a number that makes sense
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: where we could feel good about it here in the
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: state of Utah?
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: I mean, I've always felt that there should be sort
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: of an upper tier, like a mid-tier or lower tier,
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: and you just take like the 64 powerful schools and
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: create your own league and have maybe a couple tiers
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: in those leagues. I don't know, Sean. I mean, look,
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: I think if you look at the free agents, let's
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: say the big, the big 12 and the ACC, you know, Carolina,
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: Miami feel like one, two, right.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: For picks.
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: If you were to choose like the teams that are
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: available in a draft, maybe Clemson. I don't, where's Utah ranked?
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: Probably Utah is probably the next group of teams. Probably. Right.
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: I think the big 12, it's probably Texas tech, Utah, BYU, the,
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: the BYU, the Sunday thing, I don't know if it
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: hurts them at all for their, you know, their, to
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: be able to play sports on, on those days. Um,
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: but the thing I, here's the thing, Sean, that I
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: learned and we learned together, we were doing this during,
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: during the process is that it's not really about whether
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: you're actually popular or not. Right. It's, How many big
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: 10 subscriptions can they sell in Los Angeles versus Portland, Oregon, right? Yeah.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: UCLA sells more subscriptions, even though no one really watches
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: UCLA play, and they might now, obviously. And it's not
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: about performance. It's not about your actual TV ratings. It's
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: not even about, I mean, I promise you there's more
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: Oregon fans than UCLA fans, right, that actually care about football. Um,
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: so I don't, I would say all these things, like
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: I'm thinking of this from a football perspective, right? These
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: are the football programs that I think a conference would want,
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: but they might just say, we want, you know, Texas
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: tech and UCF cause they're in big States. You know
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: what I mean? Like I, I, I just, I don't,
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: I don't know what really matters for conferences.
- 1:07:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: And that's a, that's why when we talk about it
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: potentially being 40, I'm like that, I don't think Utah
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: and BYU get in at 40. If it's 48, I
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: think they're fine. If it's anything bigger than that, I
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: think they're fine.
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: Yeah, 48 probably feels about right for Utah. You know,
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: football success should matter. You guys have started off a
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: great year, obviously. You continue to do that. I think
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: that continues to be important. What was the reaction in
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: your land about the end of the Michigan game? Were
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: people cheering for that?
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: I think that there are a lot of people who
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: want to see a humble pie served to Kyle Whittingham
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: and to see things, you know, to see him not
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: succeed at Michigan. I don't count myself among that crew
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: among that group. There's, you know, there's guys on that staff.
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: There's players that left that I wish well, but I
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: think that there was a certain amount of satisfaction taken
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: by a lot of Utah fans that the former coach was,
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: was given a little slice of that pie by Iowa
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: of all teams.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: I'm not going to derail this into a call winning
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: him discussion, but I am curious though. I wanted to
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: ask you about this. I don't remember like clock management,
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: end of game issues at Utah. And I feel like
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: he's had a bunch of them so far in Michigan.
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: Is that, am I, am I misremembering like his time
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: at Utah?
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: There were a couple of seasons where people didn't like
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: the way he handled certain end of game scenarios, but
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: it wasn't last year.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: It wasn't anything recent, right?
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: The, the criticism that came in, later in his tenure
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: at Utah, were uh, him handling that injury situation really
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: terribly with cam rising. And then, uh, last year in
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: the BYU loss, the, and this is something you saw
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: post Iowa game also that he, he went from this
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: like Jocko willing ultimate accountability, extreme ownership guy to to,
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: to being someone who's just like, well, analytics said that
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: that's what I should do. So that's what I did.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: And it was like, well, hold on a minute. That's
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: antithetical to like your extreme ownership. That's antithetical to you.
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: Who've always said, no, nobody cares. There's no excuse. It's
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: all about us. We got to prepare the players better
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: and all that. And he did that again after the
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: Iowa game. I don't know how many people out here
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: saw it, but He threw Jay Hill under the bus
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: a little bit. He was just like, ah, Jay Hill
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: decided that was the best defensive structure to be in.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: And it's like, whoa, don't put this on Jay Hill.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: You're the head coach.
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: Yeah. It's, you know, I just get so much scrutiny
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: with those press conferences. It's so interesting, you know, how
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: people process what coaches say. And I think you're in
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: this situation, you're pretty accurate with like a guy who
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: screams accountability, but then sometimes doesn't do it. And people
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: have so strong opinions on, on coach speaking, what coaches
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: say at these press conferences. I find it so interesting.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: Speaker 2, it's, it's fascinating.
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: And I know that there's a certain number of people
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: here in the salt lake market that are keeping a
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: hateful eye on Michigan football at the very least.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: So good.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: Hey, Hey, Sports hate. Sports hate. Not real life hate.
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: Speaking of sports hate, on our Pac-12 Today group chat, Oregon,
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: your Oregon Ducks, beat USC. A casualty of that game
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: was Dante Moore, the starting quarterback, with the slide, the
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: late hit, the targeting, the concussion.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: A bum deal. It obviously stinks.
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: Like, Tell me how the Oregon fan base, the Oregon
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: alumni base is feeling that you got that huge win.
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: And I think Dylan Raiola deserves a ton of credit.
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: I've made fun of him a lot, but he played well.
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: But now you're going to be without the starting quarterback
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: for a minute.
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: We're off this week, which is helpful. Right. And then
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: we play UCLA. I really do think that they're going
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: to take their time with Dante more. You know, what's crazy.
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: He actually has one more year of eligibility left and
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: railroad doesn't, I don't think like rail is like, gotta go.
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: He's like, Oh, she'll leave him without them or could.
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: So I think they're taking it really easy with Dante more. Right.
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: There's no rush to bring them back. We've got UCLA
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: in two weeks. And that was such a scary injury
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: because you know, you have the fencing response and it
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: looked like he had a little bit of like a
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: leg twitch or seizure almost. I mean, look, I think
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: most organ fans would agree with me, the same voters
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: as me, were like, that hit is not the dirtiest
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: hit you've ever seen. It certainly was dirty and felt
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: that way in the moment. The celebration afterwards was really
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: poor in poor taste, right? And that's what a lot
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: of us are upset about is, look, immediately afterwards, you
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: don't know they're not knocked out, like, fine, do your celebration.
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: But then it was like the smiling and the, if
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: I find the teammates and it feels like just no
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: remorse at all, there's no one who plays a game
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: to get other players hurt. And if they tell you
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: that they're probably a little crazy. And so that was
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: a big deal. Then obviously you saw, if you watched
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: like the ducks versus them, you know, the reaction from
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: the USC fans and the reaction from their PR Arbogast,
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: like you was like, Speaker 2, I know you were
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: getting there. So go ahead.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: That was, you and I both love Homer radio, right?
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Like when you're, when you're the play by play guy
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: for a team, you're the official voice of a team.
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: You should be a Homer, right? Like we want that.
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: Bill Riley's a Homer for the Utes, but he keeps
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: it between the buoys. It Pete Arbogast for anyone who
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: didn't see it on the USC Oregon broadcast was like.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: That's not targeting. That's not an illegal hit. He wasn't sliding.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: And he just, even after the replay, he wouldn't give
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: it up.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: It was the most delusional take from a very veteran broadcaster.
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: It was crazy. So we used to do sound wars on, on,
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: it was one of our favorite segments of the week
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: where we played Homer radio calls and And we would
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: pick and choose winners. And unfortunately, or fortunately, Mark Johnson just,
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: good guy, just was a favorite every week. But, you know,
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: I think Pete probably won a week or two, right?
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: It was the same thing about Stevens, right? It's like
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: after you saw what you did, you continued to celebrate.
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: And the radio call was just... Atrocious. First, he claimed
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: that Dante Moore slid to dope headfirst. And Sean Cody,
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: poor analyst, is like, no, no, no. His feet are forward.
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: He's like, no, no, they moved them. And you're like, what?
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: He moved them? And he wants the replay and he
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: wouldn't give it up. And you saw the face. It's
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: now a meme, obviously, of like a meme of that.
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: It's like, you know, it's just... You're going to live forever.
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: Poor Sean Cody is going to be a meme now
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: because Pete... But then... we can't even share what Earl
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: Bruce again was told us, but like, I, I don't
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: like Peter anymore. Like, I just, like, I, I, I,
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: I'm upset with Dan's listening. I'm sure he is. I'm
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: upset with Dan for not telling us this. And I
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: would have, I would have, me and you have generously
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: made it whole for Dan.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: Correct.
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: And like, I, I'm like, I'm kind of shocked, honestly.
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: And this is one of those things where like, everyone
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: said he is a great person. And I had nothing,
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: I don't know Pete at all, but it's like, I
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: don't know. I mean, you saw a guy get concussed
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: and go to hospital and you just didn't show any
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: compassion whatsoever at all, like in the radio call. And
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: I heard some other stuff, again, like kind of behind
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: the scenes that makes me think you're I don't know.
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: You know, you know, you should have never known someone
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: until you, you know, you know, our personality, but now
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: it's just a point to see what Dan told us.
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: And then all, obviously the, the no remorse and the
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: call whatsoever, a guy was, can you just like have
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: some remorse man, the guy from the ground knocked out
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: with like 85 medical personnel around them.
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: Speaker 2, yeah, that it's something you don't want to
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: see on a college football field and knock on wood.
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: We haven't had like too many of those horrific things
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: That have happened so far this season.
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: It's terrible, dude. It really made me... It really, like...
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: I'm an Oregon fan, so maybe that's a little bit differently.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: And you know me, man. I have, like... I'm as
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: heartless as I come. I'm really not. But, like... I'm
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: like not emotional. That kind of got me, man. I
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: was like, that was really tough. Cause like, you know,
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: he's your quarterback and it's a big game. And, and
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: then you get in the celebration stuff really piss me off.
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: I was really angry when that happened.
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: I'll tell you one that's made that I've gotten emotional
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: a couple of times now, Harrison Taggart, former Oregon duck,
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: who's now went from Oregon to BYU, then to Utah state,
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: like watching him have to, you know, be wheeled out
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: onto the field. And like every report I've heard is
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: that he's going to be okay. And that he's going
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: to recover, but like, he's probably never going to play
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: football again. You know, he probably shouldn't ever play football again.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: And that's a young man.
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: He's like a, he was an all-star track athlete, not
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: just a great football player. Like this is a Supreme
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: athlete who is, who got the mortality that you have
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: to face with a hit like that and with losing
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: feeling in your limbs, whether it's complete or partial or whatever,
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: that one got me because that's a local kid whose
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: course of his life changes somewhat based on a hit
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: that happened in a game against the University of Utah.
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: That was crazy to see, and it's still crazy to
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: see the slow recovery process.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, it's... It's really tough because, you know,
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: I think generally speaking, you know, the injuries are not
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: as bad as people want to make them out, just
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: holistically in football, right? Like, most guys are fine, right?
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: But the bad ones are really bad, you know? And
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: it's really difficult because you have to play the game.
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: You know that they can happen to you, but you
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: can't play that way, right, Sean? And I think there's
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: so much good in football. Like, my son wants to
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: play ninth grade. And, like... I don't know. I don't know, man.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: I want to play for all the things that football
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: does for you. And just, you know, just as far
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: as mental toughness, physical toughness, perseverance. My kid needs to
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: do a training camp, like a high school, a ninth
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: grade training camp football. He needs that for his toughness.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: You know, I need him to do that. But then, like,
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: I guess the injury stuff, and again, it's like one
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: in a million, right? I mean, it's not... It doesn't
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: happen as much as we think. But the one in
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: a million is.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: Bad, man.
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: It's scary, and it happens so quickly. There was... The
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: Tiger one wasn't... It didn't happen... Was it Utah State?
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: There's another play that happened this weekend. I don't know.
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: It was a different game where a guy went to
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: make a tackle, and, like, his neck compressed. It was
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: a primetime game, and, like, maybe it was Friday night
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: at some point. It's just, like... you're like, Oh, it's
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: just so, it's just so unfortunate, but it's part of
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: the game. You hope it doesn't happen to you or someone,
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: you know, but the one thing I will say is
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: I really do think these medical staff, man, Oregon was
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: on it, man. You know, um, I was talking to,
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: we were watching the game and he was there, my
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: daughter and she's 10 and she's kind of asking about
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: what was happening. And we were telling her about it.
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: And she's like, you know, started asking questions, she's 10,
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: is anyone behind the field? And I was like, tell
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: her about DeMar Amlin. And, you know, but I was
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: also praising like the medical staff, like the medical staff
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: and the treatments that you can do and get, you know,
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: people that get paralyzed and their ability to walk again,
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: all the medical events as we have give you hope
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: that if you do get hurt, you know, there's ways
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: to get back to a hundred percent, at least close
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: to it.
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: Jeff Schwartz for another minute or two here on the
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell show in the NFL world. is JJ McCarthy.
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: Is there any hope for a real resurgence in New
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: York with him?
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: The best part of the memes, bro. Like there's, there's
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: a meme, you know, that meme of, um, of Steve Belichick,
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: like licking his lips, you know.
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: Talking about Coke face Steve Belichick.
- 1:19:39Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. It was like, uh, something like can scatter
- 1:19:43Speaker 3: boo when he sees, um, you know, his quarterback, um,
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: You know, you're wearing nine, not six. Like, there's no
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: idea who the– it's a different guy or something. I mean,
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: I don't think McCarthy's– don't think about McCarthy. He's a
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: quarterback who needs reps, okay? Maybe the Giants are bad,
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: but should they give him reps? Certainly possible. But I
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: don't know why he'd be good all of a sudden.
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: I don't understand why he'd be good. You know, it's
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: just people– Maybe we'll find a route for positive outcomes
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: and negative outcomes. People, man, they want these guys to
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: be so good sometimes, and I'm like, it's not going
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: to happen. I was talking to Cam Ward the other day,
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: and people were like, he's only made 20 starts. He's
- 1:20:28Speaker 3: the worst quarterback in the South for 20 starts. You
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: typically don't get, you know, become average after 30 starts.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: If you're bad, you're bad. It's okay to say that.
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: I don't know if he's any good, dude, so I
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: don't think he does any good, Giants.
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: Are the Raiders legit at 3-0?
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: We'll find out Sunday with the chiefs, right? The poaching
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: matters so much in this sport. I mean, Clint Kubiak,
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: you could tell just the influence he's had. They also
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: did a really good job in free agency. They hit
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: a lot of home runs in free agency. They went
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: big in free agency. And, you know, it's so funny
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: because Max Crosby wanted to be traded, obviously, and he
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: almost went to the Ravens. And now he's on the
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: 3-0 Raiders. Having a big role in the 3-0 Raiders.
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: And now he's playing the Chiefs, who he's tormented Mahomes
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: over the years. So... Looking forward to watching that game.
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: That'll be a lot of fun.
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: Do you want to say anything about the Chargers and
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: Justin Herbert? I know as an Oregon guy, you get
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: one side of that, and just like an objective NFL observer,
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: you have the other side of that. So they're 0-3,
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: and Justin Herbert has not looked great.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: I have a lot of problems with what they're doing
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: in Los Angeles. I thought McDaniel and Herbert, we could
- 1:21:42Speaker 3: fix together. They're running the two offense for Herbert, which
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: makes no sense. I think we thought, but people thought
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: they were hiding the Chargers schematically, not just like, oh,
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: they'll be better this year, was the fact that Mike
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: McDaniel would bring the Shanahan-McVay system to Los Angeles. And
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: that would, you know, in theory gives you easier access throws,
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: easier runs, and it's a great, really well-designed offense. You
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: see every week how impactful the offense can be. And instead...
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: He basically is running the two offense for Herbert. Well,
- 1:22:17Speaker 3: Herbert's playing them too. Why are you running this bum
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: offense for Herbert? It's a terrible decision. I am just
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: in awe at how bad the team is playing. They
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: forced five turnovers and lost, which is, like, you know,
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: impossible to do. I think Harbaugh's on the way out.
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: He can't get this fixed. He doesn't feel like he's
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: going to be the corner. And then he goes up
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: to USC, takes that job. I think he's going to be...
- 1:22:42Speaker 3: He might have a show clause still from his, from
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: the penalties.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: So people, people are talking about like, again, with USC's job,
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: it was like Sataki taking that job. Do you need
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: BYU for that? Yes. Yeah.
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: I think that's, I think if I'm a BYU fan,
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: that's like one of my biggest fears. I think that's,
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: I would be very, very worried about Lincoln Riley and,
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: losing favor, which he already has, and then saying, all right,
- 1:23:15Speaker 4: Kalani Satake, because he had that flirtation with Penn State
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: and then the promises, and then apparently some of those
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: were broken, and now trouble in paradise between him and
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: the athletic director, who he no longer reports to, and
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: all that stuff. And, you know, USC, you already talked
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: about the pay thing. They wouldn't pay him $ 13 million,
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: but they would give him a raise. He's lived in
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: California before. Like, this is, it's a scary thing.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm just so curious about jobs like USC because
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: I can make the case that, like, they should hire
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: Indiana's defensive coordinator, right, and just pay him $ 700 million
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: a year. And, you know, he's not going to be
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: a guy who's politically correct, right? He's not going to
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: be a guy that probably, you know, has the same
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: gravitas of Lincoln Riley day or, or some other names
- 1:24:05Speaker 3: you can get, but like, he'll just, he'll be a
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: good coach for you, right? Cause you have to get
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: to go big name hunting again or go for good coaches.
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: And yeah, If they go for good coaches, then Satake's
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: obviously high up on that list. He's not a big name, though.
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: He's not going to wow the boosters, I would imagine,
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: when they hire him. That's USC's biggest problem. What are they?
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: Are they big game hunters or are they good coach hunters?
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: Those are two separate things.
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: If Kalani makes a college football playoff with BYU this year,
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: is that enough to make him a big name?
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: Yeah. I actually... I was wrong about Utah. I think
- 1:24:44Speaker 3: this year, I talked to my podcast this week about Utah,
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: big 12 champions. Cause your schedule, I put you in.
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: If you can even play this well in the big
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: 12 championship game and Texas tech to me as a
- 1:24:58Speaker 3: lot of, as a lot of flaws and you get
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: in the game, you got a chance to be a
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: playoff team.
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: I agreed.
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: Like I, like I thought it would take longer. to
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: gel on the offensive line and longer to just sort
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: of be on your own team with Sally, like becoming
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: his own type of coach. Right. And not following a
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: legend's footsteps and look so far to, to be, to
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: be following the plan. They want men some good, you know,
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: good football game better every week. I still, you know,
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: don't sometimes love like the two quarterbacks thing, but, um,
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: and I don't know, like if you get into, uh,
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: a game where you can't run the ball, can you
- 1:25:40Speaker 3: throw yourself out of it? It's always a question, right?
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: Not just a Utah question. I like to get that question.
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: But you're not going to maybe play a team this
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: year that can really play defense to do that to
- 1:25:48Speaker 3: you outside of maybe BYU. Who are you playing this year?
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: You're really all that defense. I've got to worry about
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: that defense.
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, Cincinnati might be better than we think.
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: Houston is good. BYU, I think, is really good. But
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: none of those games look like you can't win them.
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: And Holy War is at home this year, right?
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: Correct.
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: Are you going to it? Are you going to go?
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: Of course.
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: You should come. November 7th. You got nothing better to do.
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: Yeah. I'm debating whether I should go to Columbus or not.
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: We'll see. That's like the best weekend of college football.
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: That's Miami-Notre Dame that weekend, too.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's huge.
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: Holy War.
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: Oregon-Ohio State. There's like four other games. I think Bama-LSU
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: is that weekend as well. Are your kids into it yet?
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: Are they going to, like, they like to go to
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: games yet or not?
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: Yeah, we went.
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: I took them to the Utah State game, and they
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: loved it. So now they're like, Dad, can we go
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: to the next one? I'm like, ah, it's a night game.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: No.
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: But I'm going to start forking out for tickets for them.
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: You place in the box, though. Do you have a box?
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: Yeah, when I'm just going by myself, but I can't.
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: You can't take the kids out there.
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: I thought you told me you bought a box for
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: the season.
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: That must have been somebody else. Did you get a
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: chance to look at more Zaraway Williams film before we
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: let you go?
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: I have not had a chance to look at them yet.
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: I know Dane Brugler is super high on them. It
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: has not caught my radar yet. I just haven't had
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: a chance. My problem is most people in this media
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: business do one sport or the other, right? Right. Cause
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: it or NFL. I do both. I bear like right
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: now I have to prepare for this upcoming week of,
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: for NFL and college football. And my guys like Duke
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: and Brown are still texting me about clips from like Sunday.
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: Like I got, I gotta move on, man. I don't,
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: I don't, I don't have time. I gotta work. Like
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: most people spend the whole, like a lot of people
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: that I know like spend the whole, this whole week
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: watching film of every team. And then, then Sunday rolls around,
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: they walk the game. They just do it again. I,
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: I have to like look forward and look back at
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: the same time. I don't, I wish I had more time, dude.
- 1:28:04Speaker 3: I just don't. So I'm complaining. I probably shouldn't complain,
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: but man, it's. So a lot of time.
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: Well, when you, when you deem us to be important
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: enough and you watch some zero way.
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: Williams, it's almost Joe Moore award, uh, you know, uh,
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: time to start like, you know, getting some honor roll in,
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: I will say Thunderbats five and Oh, five and Oh,
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: Thunderbats number one in the Sharmack 10, you softball standings.
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: Well, that's, that was going to be my next question.
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: That was the most important thing to finish on. Are you,
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: in the running for coach of the year or what?
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: I don't know. I mean, I have so many grudges
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: about this league, but no, I'm not. I shouldn't be
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: because we've thrown seven pitchers in five games and the
- 1:28:51Speaker 3: other teams that are undefeated have only thrown two or three.
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: It's fall. It's development time. And we're the only ones
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: doing it.
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: I love it.
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: Well, you can call back on Friday and air your
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: grievances when we do that on Friday.
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: Afternoons, all right?
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: What time is it?
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: It's 3.30 your time. You don't.
- 1:29:09Speaker 3: Want to call and complain about Sharmak softball? Yep.
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: It's an open forum. You can complain about whatever you want.
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: Oh, really? Sounds like Savage is stupid. I like it. Okay.
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's perfect.
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: All right, buddy.
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: All right, dude. Appreciate your time. Enjoy New York.
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: Bye, guys. Bye, guys.
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz.
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: Great stuff from him talking all things football, NFL, and college.
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: The Daily Dump is next right here on your home

- 1:29:59Speaker 6: brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just
- 1:30:02Speaker 6: look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:30:05Speaker 4: We'll be talking some mammoth hockey in about 15 minutes here.
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: Adrian Denny's going to join us. I guess it'll be
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: more like 20 minutes. Adrian Denny is going to join
- 1:30:13Speaker 4: us for the first time this year. Weekly guest, Mammoth Insider.
- 1:30:17Speaker 4: We'll get to that as the Mammoths start their season
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: tomorrow night at the Delta Center against the Chicago Blackhawks.
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: Looking forward to the new look Mammoth. Right now, time
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: for the Daily Dump. Brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, Excavation.
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: Look for the truck with the duck. Tell them OC
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: sent you when you make an appointment.
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: Have you ever.
- 1:30:42Speaker 4: You ever leaked any trade secrets at your job?
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: We will not read any names, so you can make
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: your admissions on the air if you want. We'll just
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: say texter. If you call in, maybe we'll get a
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: voice modulator.
- 1:30:57Speaker 4: Texter A said, an ex-Auburn staffer has been arrested and
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: jailed with two felony charges. These are felony charges for
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: leaking trade secrets.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: Now, this is a 24-year-old.
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: Named David Rudolph Jenrath, which seems, if we're being honest,
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: that sounds like a criminal name. Also, the fact that
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: they went middle name on this, that's usually something they
- 1:31:21Speaker 4: do with murderers, serial killers, and they do it on
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: purpose because they don't want it to be like everyone
- 1:31:28Speaker 4: named John Booth gets thrown into the same category as
- 1:31:34Speaker 4: John Wilkes Booth.
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: I just heard that there was someone with my name
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: Different middle name who was some kind of murderer in
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: Salt Lake City the year I was born.
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: I'm like, well, I hate that. What's your middle name?
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: It's Clifford C. This guy, his middle initial was I, apparently. Okay,
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: all right. It was James I. Peterson, and someone told
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: me that, and I'm like, well, I wish I didn't
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: know that.
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: Geez. One of my best friends, buddy in the fight world.
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: Well, and college football before that.
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: But he has the same name as a guy who
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: was apparently a notorious member of the IRA.
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: Oh.
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: Like the Irish Republican Army.
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: And this friend of mine studied in Australia. He got
- 1:32:26Speaker 4: his master's degree in Australia because he was a citizen
- 1:32:28Speaker 4: there as well. And apparently that guy, that IRA member–
- 1:32:32Speaker 4: Had relocated and flown.
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: Followed him to Australia.
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: So he actually would get like, when he would check
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: in for flights going to Australia or leaving Australia, there
- 1:32:47Speaker 4: was always like a, hold on, what's going on here?
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: One time he got detained. Random search. Like the random
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: security check. Yeah.
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: So pretty crazy if you share names. So David Rudolph Genrav.
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: Which sounds like a criminal mastermind name.
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: He's only 24 years old, but he was on the
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: Auburn football staff and he's being held on $ 15, 000.
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: Bond in the Lee County jail in Auburn, Alabama.
- 1:33:10Speaker 4: You know how I feel about County identifiers here.
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Very Southern thing.
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: Um, he was arrested and charged because he leaked allegedly
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: leaked confidential recruiting evaluation information to, uh, other teams in
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: the sec.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: So like in another industry, they might call this proprietary information.
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: It's industry secrets according to these charges.
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: And they were recruiting evaluations and he sent them to
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: multiple schools. He was like, I guess, trying to like
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: sell his information to Tennessee and to Florida and things
- 1:33:51Speaker 4: like that. And Auburn found out about it. And it's,
- 1:33:55Speaker 4: this is a felony charge, which is very, very serious.
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: And I was like, okay, well, maybe that makes sense
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: if he was saying, hey, this is how much we're
- 1:34:02Speaker 4: offering this kid to come from, you know, whatever.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: What was that? Hoover, Alabama.
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: That was the school on the MTV two-a-days documentary series.
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: Did you ever watch that? You were pretty young. I
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: did not. It was awesome. It was like reality television.
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: It was called two-a-days, and it was about... It was.
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: Like football training camp. It was reality TV. It was
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: high school football... High school hard knocks.
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: Jersey Shore. Jersey Shore. Crazy. They followed their social lives.
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: It was an incredible trash television back in the day
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: at Hoover, Alabama.
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: John Parker Wilson.
- 1:34:39Speaker 3: Oh. Yeah.
- 1:34:41Speaker 8: Anyway.
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: The quarterback who lost to Utah.
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: He's selling these evaluations, not of, hey, this is what Hoover,
- 1:34:50Speaker 4: we're going to pay this Hoover quarterback to come to Auburn. Just,
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: this is why we like him. So, information that these
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: schools are already... They already have interesting, like nobody. I
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: shouldn't say nobody. It's harder now than it ever was
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: to keep recruits secret, to be the only team that's
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: in on a guy that like, because these recruiting services
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: track everything.
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: And that whole dynamic is changing.
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: I think in the near future, because of the leaked
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: information that now one of the services, I can't remember
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: which service.
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: So I don't want to put it out. and say
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: it wrong.
- 1:35:27Speaker 4: Somebody was charging $ 500 per profile to evaluate the player
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: and to say like, yeah, you pay us $ 500 and
- 1:35:35Speaker 4: we'll get your kid on the radar. Like that's gross
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: and yucky. And people were boycotting and there were high
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: school coaches boycotting and, and saying, we don't want these
- 1:35:45Speaker 4: people at our football games anymore and all.
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: That kind of stuff.
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: But this guy was just selling, Hey, we like this guy.
- 1:35:52Speaker 4: Cause he's six, five, 240 pounds. it's a felony charge
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: to be giving out kind of obvious information.
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: It sounds like. Yeah. Very curious.
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: What other details there might be with this? Cause if
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: that's what it is, I'm not sure the, I'm not
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: sure they have much of a case against this guy,
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: but we'll, we'll have to see.
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: He did. He, he did. Also get a felony charge
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: for computer tampering.
- 1:36:25Speaker 4: So I don't know if he hacked into somebody's database
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: in order to do this. He's accused of disclosing, using, controlling,
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: or taking computer programs and data with the intent to
- 1:36:36Speaker 4: harass Auburn University Athletics by disclosing trade secrets and transmitted
- 1:36:40Speaker 4: those secrets without the owner's consent.
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: Also, he.
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: Much like the... Michael Vick, Ron Mexico thing. He called
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: himself Don Julio when he was sending these fake emails.
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: The chip mogul, Don Julio. This is really incredible.
- 1:37:02Speaker 4: What was Darren Williams alias when he got arrested when
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: he was young up in park city or when he
- 1:37:08Speaker 4: got charged up in park city?
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: I don't know. Wasn't there. I don't think I know
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: this story. Eight, seven, seven, three, five, three, zero 700.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: Was it Darren?
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: I should text Darren and find out there was, Darren's like, Hey,
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: thanks for dragging my name.
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: What are you doing? Big listener to the show.
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: D will hopefully you didn't just drag his name through
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: the mud. It might not have been Darren. Who was,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: there was, was it, there was some, there was.
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: A jazz player from that era. There were jazz players
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: from that era.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: And they were, they got involved in like something up
- 1:37:42Speaker 4: in park city and they gave fake.
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: Names to the disturbing the piece. Speaker 2 I'm going to,
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: now it's going to bug me until someone points it out.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: How about this?
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: You alluded to this earlier on the show. Premium field
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: level seats are coming to rice Eccles stadium. Alchemy insurance
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: field boxes are going to debut November 7th at the
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: holy war.
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: So alchemy doesn't just get the, what are they, what
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: are they calling that? And the bumper, the bumper on
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: the back of the helmet.
- 1:38:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: They also get their name on premium field seats, field boxes.
- 1:38:15Speaker 4: That's what happens when you throw some sponsorship dollars at
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: the university.
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: I love this. The press release.
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: These will deliver ticket holders an up-close experience from the
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: sidelines through this exclusive North End Zone vantage point.
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: Here's my problem. with it. Guess where I stand to
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: watch most games? The north.
- 1:38:36Speaker 4: I usually just plant my back up against the little, like, partition, the.
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: Barrier, the wall. Which is probably where the field boxes
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: will be. That's where they have to be. There's nowhere
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: else you can put them. You could just still try
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: to do it and see how mad people just stand
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: right in front of their expensive field. You know what?
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: You said you wanted an authentic experience. This is part
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: of it.
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: Media stands here. Okay. I'm sorry. Did, did they say
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: it'd be an unobstructed view? No, they didn't. I'm obstructing
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: your view.
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: No, I'm going to guess there'll be some security guys
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: keeping media and other who against away from that spot.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: That's going to be Mike. I hope not.
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: But that's cool. That's a bummer for you.
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: I don't know how I feel about the field level suites,
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: if I'm being honest, because you'll notice in every other
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: scenario where the luxury boxes are in an arena, it's
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: a further back vantage.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: You trade off the up close. Or the bird's eye view.
- 1:39:40Speaker 4: Or the bird's eye view with the better amenities and
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: the food and the drinks and that kind of stuff.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: So it's a trade-off, certainly. We've seen these in many
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: NFL stadiums. I want to say Arizona comes to mind.
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: I believe Lucas Oil Stadium with the Colts. I think
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: Globe Life Field or whatever it's called that the Texas
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: Rangers play at, their relatively new ballpark. They have these
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: kind of field-level suites. You see the fans celebrate. They
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: get a lot of camera time because they're right there
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: on the field. It feels like in those stadiums though,
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: baseball or football, there's more room between the lines, the
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: out of bounds line and the wall. It feels like
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: rice cycle stadium doesn't have a ton of room.
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: I'm actually really curious to see how these things turn
- 1:40:35Speaker 4: out and see what they're exactly like, because.
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: They're going to make more room. There's barely how But,
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: but how do you do it?
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: I mean, there's not like, I'm not poo pooing this.
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: I'm just very curious to see what it looks like. Cause,
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: cause honestly this could, you could end up being like, so,
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: you know, there's the, there's the, the white lines, there's
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: a chalk. That's the actual field of play, the back
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: of the end zone.
- 1:40:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:40:56Speaker 4: And then if you pay close attention, there's some other
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: painted lines. That's like the line that the photographers cannot
- 1:41:04Speaker 4: cross that the media cannot cross.
- 1:41:06Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: And it's probably another five yards, three to five yards.
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: whatever the official measurement is beyond the end of the
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: end zone. It's not a ton of room. If you're
- 1:41:16Speaker 4: putting a luxury box there, you might like the front
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: of your luxury box might be right up on that line,
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: which is close to the field. Like really, really close
- 1:41:24Speaker 4: to the field. Like a player going out of the
- 1:41:27Speaker 4: back of the end zone on a catch is going
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: to end up in your lap, which is part of
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: the experience.
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: Maybe, maybe, maybe they put the hockey type glass. That's
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: the partition between the, luxury boxes in this for, I
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: don't know.
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: It'll be very curious to see. I think it's a
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: great idea.
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: I think it's a very creative way to try to
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: generate more revenue and try to give a premium game
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: day experience. Um, but I'm very curious to see how
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: they're going to pull it off. We'll find out November
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: 7th at the Holy war. Wait, great time to debut these.
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: By the way, somebody texted me, says you're forgetting our,
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: our man, Mitt Romney had a famous alias, Pierre delecto.
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: Is that real?
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: Really?
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: Okay, was someone saying it was Darren Williams and Robert Whaley?
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: Okay, it was Robert Whaley. That was the name I
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: was missing. But I think they gave aliases, if I'm
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: not mistaken. I got to text Darren and try to
- 1:42:21Speaker 4: figure it out.
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: Harris Smith was apparently, according to a texter, Harris Smith
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: was Plaxico Burris' alias when he shot himself in the leg.
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: Okay, what alias would you use to, like, check into
- 1:42:33Speaker 4: hotels if you were a famous person that didn't want
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: people to know that You're Julia Roberts staying at the
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: Four Seasons or whatever. James Peterson becomes famous, has stalkers
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: and super fans.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: You now have to come up with an alias. I
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: can't tell you what my alias is, OC. It's already
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: my life, okay? Okay.
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: Well, so.
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: If you say my name backwards, my first and last
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: name backwards, it sounds like a Russian name.
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: Maybe I'd do that. Samaj Nazartep. That's a great one.
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: That's amazing. Could do that. Have you ever done that
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: with your name? Tried to say it backwards? Well, phonetically,
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: it's Nosh Lanako. See, that's very foreign sounding.
- 1:43:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:43:21Speaker 2: Nosh Lanako. Nosh Lanako. Like, that's phonetically, if you read
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: it like it would be spelled.
- 1:43:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: It wouldn't be Nosh. It'd be like Nais or something.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: That's true, because it's, yeah. It's S-E-A-N.
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Wait, say that again. Samaj Nazratep.
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: Nazratep.
- 1:43:36Speaker 2: That's perfect. My name is Samaj Nazratep. Okay. I'd like
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: one room, one night, please.
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: 8907 says Darren's alias was Tori Ellis.
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: Tori Ellis. That's pretty good.
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: So for some reason, when I was in, when I
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: was like junior high age, I thought the name Sam
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: Patterson was cool. This is before I knew about the author,
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: Sam Patterson. So that was like, at that time, my
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: fake alias, but that wouldn't work because that's a famous guy.
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: Speaker 0 7, you're like my, my alias.
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: So people will leave me alone as Brad Pitt. Yeah.
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: I was just like Brad Pitt.
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: Stay in here.
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: Send me up to his room. All right. We'll double
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: up here.
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: We've got Adrian Denny joining us to talk some Utah
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: mammoth hockey at the top of our number one, the
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: mammoth start their season tomorrow night. at the Delta Center

- 1:44:35Speaker 4: more on Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:44:49Speaker 6: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 1:44:53Speaker 6: the best youth football coverage. Here's OC from the Murdoch
- 1:44:56Speaker 6: Hyundai studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: Adrian Denny joins us here in studio between the pipes
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: is back brought to you by Latin industries, Valley plumbing, heating,
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: and cooling. Our Utah mammoth insider who you've been listening
- 1:45:19Speaker 4: to on mammoth daily and other places already. But now
- 1:45:22Speaker 4: we get it back here in studio with us. We're
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: excited about it.
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: Adrian Denny. How are you?
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: Sean?
- 1:45:27Speaker 8: It's like, I never left. It's like, I never left.
- 1:45:31Speaker 8: It's great to be back. Just, just, uh, Getting right
- 1:45:35Speaker 8: in here. Feels like we never left. Glad to be back, man.
- 1:45:39Speaker 8: Chicago Blackhawks coming to the Delta Center. A redesigned, once again, refurbished,
- 1:45:45Speaker 8: redone interior of the Delta Center. Second time in two
- 1:45:48Speaker 8: years that they've pulled this thing off. I have yet
- 1:45:51Speaker 8: to see it. I'm sure you have.
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: What does it look like in there? Do you know what?
- 1:45:58Speaker 8: We were the first ones back in the Delta Center.
- 1:46:02Speaker 8: OC for hockey night, Utah on the radio. Cause we
- 1:46:05Speaker 8: had to do preseason games.
- 1:46:06Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:46:07Speaker 8: Preseason games were on the road. So our mountain blue
- 1:46:10Speaker 8: radio studios were the first thing finished. Cause we had
- 1:46:14Speaker 8: to do preseason games. So being in there last week,
- 1:46:18Speaker 8: as you had the, the, the workers working feverishly, I've
- 1:46:24Speaker 8: never seen so many people inside the Delta center is
- 1:46:27Speaker 8: on Tuesday night last week, as they were hustling and
- 1:46:30Speaker 8: bustling to, uh, to finish everything, but the terrace is impressive.
- 1:46:35Speaker 8: The North side seating, it, it looks like a completely,
- 1:46:40Speaker 8: completely different arena. The gondolas that are overhanging on over,
- 1:46:47Speaker 8: you know, the, the East and West sides overlooking, you know, the,
- 1:46:51Speaker 8: the center ice areas that, that spells hockey. Like that's
- 1:46:56Speaker 8: Madison square garden. That's Montreal. That's, that's, an exclamation point
- 1:47:01Speaker 8: on a hockey building to have those which, which are
- 1:47:04Speaker 8: available for fans, but press areas for, for the team's
- 1:47:08Speaker 8: respective management, Chris Armstrong and Bill Armstrong have a new
- 1:47:11Speaker 8: spot up there.
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: So, so love it.
- 1:47:13Speaker 8: I just love walking back in and seeing the, the
- 1:47:18Speaker 8: latest and greatest from, from SCG.
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: So really cool. They got it done.
- 1:47:23Speaker 8: There's, there's a lot of new food and beverage options
- 1:47:26Speaker 8: to go along with great stuff already. So, It was
- 1:47:30Speaker 8: fun being back there on Saturday, got the open house
- 1:47:33Speaker 8: tour on Friday. And then, you know, a little before that,
- 1:47:36Speaker 8: the preseason games popped our heads in. And it's like, oh,
- 1:47:40Speaker 8: it's a little bit of a chill in here. Are
- 1:47:42Speaker 8: they putting the ice in and stuff like that?
- 1:47:46Speaker 4: So I'm attending tomorrow night's game as a fan. Very
- 1:47:50Speaker 4: excited to do that and experience, you know, the new
- 1:47:54Speaker 4: Delta Center as a fan.
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: And then, of course, we'll do it. As media members,
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: as soon as we get the chance to do that
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: as well. But this is.
- 1:48:03Speaker 4: Another year where we came into this conversation this time
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: last year. We were talking about the optimism and the
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: high hopes and got to make the playoffs.
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: It's playoffs or bust.
- 1:48:13Speaker 4: And it felt like what we were hearing from the
- 1:48:17Speaker 4: coaching staff, what we were hearing from management at that,
- 1:48:20Speaker 4: time was like, yeah, we're very capable of making the playoffs,
- 1:48:22Speaker 4: but they were from the very beginning tempering expectations. And
- 1:48:28Speaker 4: I've heard less of that this year. Now that might
- 1:48:30Speaker 4: be me hearing less of it or it might be
- 1:48:32Speaker 4: them saying less of it, but it leads me to
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: my question of, Internally, what are the expectations this year
- 1:48:39Speaker 4: now that they made the playoffs last year? I imagine
- 1:48:42Speaker 4: it's yes, absolutely. Playoffs are bust again. But now let's
- 1:48:47Speaker 4: go win a series. What's being shaped within the building?
- 1:48:51Speaker 8: President of Hockey Operations Chris Armstrong has said since our
- 1:48:55Speaker 8: closing media availability last year, like, look, we're disappointed how
- 1:48:58Speaker 8: this ended. And you look at the series, and we've
- 1:49:01Speaker 8: talked about it. You led in five games out of
- 1:49:03Speaker 8: the six and lost the series in six. You led
- 1:49:06Speaker 8: five of those games in the third period. So that's
- 1:49:10Speaker 8: the first end of it. The second end of it is, okay,
- 1:49:15Speaker 8: now we need to get back to the playoffs so
- 1:49:18Speaker 8: we can pick up where they left off. And so
- 1:49:21Speaker 8: there's been an emphasis on how hard it is to
- 1:49:26Speaker 8: get back.
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: To the playoffs in the NHL.
- 1:49:29Speaker 8: Last year, from the year before, only 10 of the
- 1:49:33Speaker 8: 16 teams returned back to the postseason. And you look
- 1:49:38Speaker 8: at the team with the best record in Winnipeg and
- 1:49:40Speaker 8: the Stanley Cup champion, Florida Panthers, they didn't make it.
- 1:49:44Speaker 8: A lot of that has to do with injuries, right,
- 1:49:47Speaker 8: for a team not making it back. So obviously you
- 1:49:50Speaker 8: want to stay healthy, but you got to have that
- 1:49:54Speaker 8: internal hunger to not forget how you got to the
- 1:49:58Speaker 8: playoffs last year. So that's kind of been the day-to-day
- 1:50:04Speaker 8: is we just got to get back in and then
- 1:50:07Speaker 8: we'll take it from there because we can't take it
- 1:50:10Speaker 8: for granted making the playoffs because it's going to be
- 1:50:14Speaker 8: hard to get back because the teams we mentioned like Winnipeg,
- 1:50:20Speaker 8: I think they'll be improved. Teams like San Jose, they're
- 1:50:23Speaker 8: expecting to take the step that Utah took Last year,
- 1:50:28Speaker 8: and then OC, you get to the playoffs, and you
- 1:50:31Speaker 8: become the team that gets hot.
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: Vegas, Carolina, Florida Panthers.
- 1:50:37Speaker 8: Had their runs in a couple of seasons, but just
- 1:50:40Speaker 8: get back to the playoffs. Unlike, you know, I remember
- 1:50:46Speaker 8: when the Seattle Sonics blew that 2-0 first-round lead to
- 1:50:51Speaker 8: Denver in 1994, and they lost the series in five.
- 1:50:57Speaker 8: And George Carl said, this is going to be the
- 1:50:59Speaker 8: longest preseason in NBA history, 82 games to get, just
- 1:51:04Speaker 8: to get to the playoffs and the mammoth aren't, aren't
- 1:51:07Speaker 8: looking at it like that.
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: Let's talk about the opening day roster.
- 1:51:14Speaker 4: And you know, there was some conversation about whether or
- 1:51:17Speaker 4: not the crop of like young stars that they're hoping
- 1:51:20Speaker 4: will be a big part of eventual Stanley cup runs,
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: whether or not, Like a Tijaginla and a Danoye and
- 1:51:27Speaker 4: some of those individuals were going to be ready for
- 1:51:29Speaker 4: this season. All those guys, of course, stated that their
- 1:51:31Speaker 4: goal was to make the big league roster this year.
- 1:51:34Speaker 4: It didn't happen, at least initially, as some of those
- 1:51:38Speaker 4: young guys designated for assignment. You've got Simishev on the
- 1:51:44Speaker 4: opening day roster. You've got Daniil Boot up here. We'll
- 1:51:48Speaker 4: get to some of the other fresh names, but those
- 1:51:50Speaker 4: were young guys that were making this transition last year,
- 1:51:53Speaker 4: and we saw both in the minors and on NHL
- 1:51:57Speaker 4: ice a little bit last year. Where was the progress
- 1:52:01Speaker 4: with those two individuals that made Coach Bear and company
- 1:52:05Speaker 4: feel like, all right, now's the time.
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: Let's put them on this thing from day one. Watching
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: them in the preseason and be like, okay, They got it.
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: They got it. It's it.
- 1:52:14Speaker 8: And, you know, you watch preseason, you know. Like, it
- 1:52:19Speaker 8: wasn't any surprise on any of the cuts that were
- 1:52:23Speaker 8: made and on any of the guys that made the
- 1:52:25Speaker 8: team from just watching the preseason.
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: You know, you're like, oh, okay.
- 1:52:30Speaker 8: Dmitry Simishev made the team last year and then started
- 1:52:34Speaker 8: to get, you know, two, three months in on the
- 1:52:37Speaker 8: day-to-day of being in the NHL.
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: It's a lot. went back down to the AHL.
- 1:52:44Speaker 8: Daniil Boot then got called up and he played, you know,
- 1:52:49Speaker 8: close to half of the season. And, but they, at
- 1:52:54Speaker 8: the end of the year, you're like, okay, they both
- 1:52:56Speaker 8: split the year here.
- 1:52:58Speaker 2: What's next?
- 1:52:59Speaker 8: And then during the course of the summer, we were
- 1:53:00Speaker 8: starting to hear, okay, oh, Daniil Boot, oh, Dmitry Simishev.
- 1:53:05Speaker 8: And then we watched the games and you can, it's
- 1:53:07Speaker 8: the confidence. It's not, they were drafted, 6th and 12th
- 1:53:11Speaker 8: overall in the first round. They've got talent. They're smart guys.
- 1:53:16Speaker 8: Daniil Boot's dad's a coach, and you can tell. But
- 1:53:19Speaker 8: the confidence that they were playing with to actually go
- 1:53:24Speaker 8: play to their abilities is the biggest thing. When Daniil
- 1:53:30Speaker 8: Boot was in Tucson last year, it was night and
- 1:53:33Speaker 8: day difference to me in just his attack in the
- 1:53:38Speaker 8: way he played, he'd shoot from anywhere.
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: He scored from anywhere.
- 1:53:43Speaker 8: He, you know, he was making incredible plays and reading
- 1:53:48Speaker 8: things just, you know, brilliantly, but it's not what we
- 1:53:52Speaker 8: saw in Utah. And it was just, it's just confidence to, okay, I'm,
- 1:53:57Speaker 8: I'm just as good as these guys.
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: I can do it.
- 1:53:59Speaker 8: And we saw that in the preseason from him and
- 1:54:02Speaker 8: we saw some swagger from, from Simashev too. So with
- 1:54:05Speaker 8: the Noye and again, we're going down, you've got the
- 1:54:07Speaker 8: case study of, oh, look what a difference a year
- 1:54:11Speaker 8: made for Simishev and Boot in terms of confidence. And
- 1:54:14Speaker 8: for Denoy and Iginla, Dylan Gunther got sent down at
- 1:54:21Speaker 8: the end of training camp.
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: Three years ago. And it was a shock to him.
- 1:54:29Speaker 8: And Dylan Gunther spent half of a season in the
- 1:54:32Speaker 8: AHL less than a year before he got awarded that
- 1:54:35Speaker 8: eight-year contract in training camp in 2024.
- 1:54:38Speaker 3: So....
- 1:54:39Speaker 8: It's not a punishment. It's just something you do. 90%
- 1:54:44Speaker 8: of the NHL play in the AHL. So it'll be
- 1:54:48Speaker 8: good for those guys because the one advantage that Dmitry
- 1:54:52Speaker 8: Simishev and Daniil But had was they played professionally in
- 1:54:55Speaker 8: Russia in the KHL, which is pretty similar to the AHL.
- 1:54:59Speaker 8: Danoia Anaginla played in juniors, and it's great hockey. It's
- 1:55:05Speaker 8: a big deal, but you're playing against teenagers.
- 1:55:08Speaker 4: Yeah, the bodies are different. You're not playing against seasoned,
- 1:55:13Speaker 4: grown men with their man strength. So there's going to
- 1:55:18Speaker 4: be an adjustment for any of these. And we see
- 1:55:20Speaker 4: this in every sport. There was some photos put out
- 1:55:27Speaker 4: earlier in this year where it was Will Anderson from
- 1:55:30Speaker 4: the Houston Texans. And they were like, this is why
- 1:55:35Speaker 4: You have to have age limits in professional leagues because
- 1:55:39Speaker 4: Will Anderson was, of course, like a freak of nature
- 1:55:42Speaker 4: when he was a 19-year-old. Now Will Anderson is like
- 1:55:46Speaker 4: 25 years old, and it's a picture. It's a side-by-side
- 1:55:47Speaker 4: of him when he first got into the league versus now,
- 1:55:51Speaker 4: and he looks like a different human being. So I'm
- 1:55:56Speaker 4: trying to be patient with these guys from the juniors.
- 1:55:58Speaker 4: I know that the front office and the people who
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: have been seasoned in hockey are it's a little easier
- 1:56:04Speaker 4: for them because they've seen this play itself out so
- 1:56:06Speaker 4: many different times. But, you know, these are young guys
- 1:56:10Speaker 4: who I don't think we need to get discouraged by
- 1:56:12Speaker 4: any kind of delay here for the points that you
- 1:56:15Speaker 4: just made.
- 1:56:15Speaker 8: Yeah, and the good thing about the collective bargaining agreement
- 1:56:20Speaker 8: in the NHL that went into place September 16th, it
- 1:56:25Speaker 8: allows 19-year-old first-round draft picks to play in the AHL
- 1:56:31Speaker 8: before this year. they had to be in their birth
- 1:56:34Speaker 8: year of turning 20 to play in the AHL, or
- 1:56:37Speaker 8: they'd have to go back to Canadian juniors if that's
- 1:56:39Speaker 8: where they came from. That was the agreement with the
- 1:56:41Speaker 8: NHL and the junior leagues, which didn't make any sense
- 1:56:45Speaker 8: for the hockey development, but that's what it was.
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: And this year you.
- 1:56:48Speaker 8: Can send a 19-year-old first-round pick in Caleb Denoyer to
- 1:56:53Speaker 8: your minor league team to start playing professionally versus back
- 1:56:58Speaker 8: to score three points a game in juniors, which is
- 1:57:00Speaker 8: what T.J. Gindlin was doing last year. And, you know, wasn't,
- 1:57:05Speaker 8: wasn't the worst thing because again, one was recovering from
- 1:57:07Speaker 8: an injury. So that got him, you know, after the, the,
- 1:57:11Speaker 8: the hip surgeries to, you know, get back into the
- 1:57:14Speaker 8: swing of it.
- 1:57:15Speaker 2: So that's, that's where those guys will be.
- 1:57:17Speaker 8: And, and OC, if, if there's a call up between
- 1:57:21Speaker 8: now and new year's, it's going to be, you know,
- 1:57:24Speaker 8: probably one of your, your veteran guys, your guys that
- 1:57:27Speaker 8: have been up in the NHL before, uh, that you're
- 1:57:31Speaker 8: going to call on first and let those guys get
- 1:57:34Speaker 8: good and settled down in the AHL and play 30,
- 1:57:38Speaker 8: 40 games and take it from there.
- 1:57:42Speaker 4: Another name new to the roster this year, not one
- 1:57:45Speaker 4: of the young guys. He's 33 years old. Vincent Trocek is,
- 1:57:50Speaker 4: I think, a big acquisition for this team. And last year,
- 1:57:54Speaker 4: 16 goals, 37 assists to total out for you math
- 1:57:58Speaker 4: whizzes out there, 53 points. And, you know, his role
- 1:58:03Speaker 4: on this mammoth team, have they figured out exactly what.
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: It is yet?
- 1:58:05Speaker 8: He's going to play with Keller and Schmaltz and head coach.
- 1:58:09Speaker 8: Andre Turney has already given us the warning. Hey, this
- 1:58:14Speaker 8: might take five games. This might take ten games for
- 1:58:17Speaker 8: those guys to click. Schmaltz and Keller have been playing
- 1:58:21Speaker 8: together for years and adding Trocek to it, it might
- 1:58:26Speaker 8: take him a couple weeks to To get settled. And
- 1:58:30Speaker 8: maybe not. He might have three points tomorrow night. Against Chicago.
- 1:58:33Speaker 8: But there is a runway. There's a walk up. There's
- 1:58:38Speaker 8: an understanding. That putting him on that top line. With
- 1:58:41Speaker 8: those two guys. That have been together forever.
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: And you know. Play a little differently. Than what Trocek
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: would be used to. That it might just. It might
- 1:58:53Speaker 2: take a little bit of time to click.
- 1:58:57Speaker 3: I think.
- 1:58:59Speaker 4: Weirdly, one of the more exciting names on the roster
- 1:59:02Speaker 4: for me is a guy that we won't see every night.
- 1:59:05Speaker 4: But Sebastian Colsa, who you needed some depth. You needed
- 1:59:10Speaker 4: a quality backup goaltender. And everything I've been hearing is
- 1:59:14Speaker 4: that they really like what he's done. Everything we've been
- 1:59:16Speaker 4: seeing is that, you know, this is probably something closer
- 1:59:19Speaker 4: to the, you know, the production you're going to get
- 1:59:22Speaker 4: from your starter, Karel Vemelka. Number 33. Number 33 on
- 1:59:30Speaker 4: the roster, number one in our hearts. How big is
- 1:59:32Speaker 4: this addition for the Utah Mammoth, Adrian? Yeah, they're really
- 1:59:36Speaker 4: excited about it. They've been watching this guy for years because,
- 1:59:40Speaker 4: number one, he was teammates with Dylan Gunther in junior.
- 1:59:44Speaker 4: So as they did their work on what would be
- 1:59:48Speaker 4: a ninth overall pick, they're watching his goalie.
- 1:59:51Speaker 8: They won a league championship. And, you know, he's got
- 1:59:55Speaker 8: that NHL size. And he was drafted in the first
- 1:59:58Speaker 8: round by Detroit. And that's another story, but you know,
- 2:00:04Speaker 8: you're thinking for the last two years, okay, he's going
- 2:00:06Speaker 8: to go up and be the backup in Detroit. And
- 2:00:08Speaker 8: they kept signing veterans and he kept staying and playing
- 2:00:13Speaker 8: in the AHL. And he's, he's played one period of,
- 2:00:16Speaker 8: of NHL hockey, but he looked really good in the
- 2:00:18Speaker 8: preseason stopped 11 to 12 against Colorado on the first game. And,
- 2:00:23Speaker 8: and that, that game against Vegas where we're the, Surprise, surprise,
- 2:00:28Speaker 8: Vegas came back in the third period to win 5-4
- 2:00:30Speaker 8: in overtime when Utah had a 3-1 lead going into
- 2:00:33Speaker 8: the third period. Power play goal, 6-on-5 goal, 3-on-3 goal,
- 2:00:37Speaker 8: so it kind of inflated his numbers a little bit,
- 2:00:39Speaker 8: but going into that third period again, second straight game
- 2:00:42Speaker 8: of allowing just a single goal, but he's a big
- 2:00:46Speaker 8: goalie that Utah's been watching for years, and Like, his
- 2:00:53Speaker 8: name was thrown about for teams that needed a starting goalie. Like,
- 2:00:57Speaker 8: you heard Edmonton in conversation for him, which is another
- 2:01:03Speaker 8: completely different story. But teams that needed a starter, you
- 2:01:08Speaker 8: heard Sebastian Cosa as a guy that they were, you know,
- 2:01:13Speaker 8: rumored to be after.
- 2:01:17Speaker 2: How much has this changed the ice time for Vemelka?
- 2:01:22Speaker 4: I mean, in a perfect world, he played more than
- 2:01:25Speaker 4: every other goalie in the league last year.
- 2:01:27Speaker 2: So you're probably... He likes that. He's a workhorse.
- 2:01:32Speaker 4: But how much does this allow for a little bit
- 2:01:35Speaker 4: of rest, a little bit of flexibility with making sure
- 2:01:38Speaker 4: you keep him fresh?
- 2:01:40Speaker 8: Last year it started, he was playing three out of
- 2:01:42Speaker 8: every four games, which equates to actually what he ended
- 2:01:48Speaker 8: up playing.
- 2:01:51Speaker 2: I think.
- 2:01:52Speaker 8: I think if you're two out of every three games
- 2:01:55Speaker 8: for Vemelka, which would put him at just over 50
- 2:02:00Speaker 8: games and Kosa just over 30 games, you're comfortable with
- 2:02:04Speaker 8: what you're getting from the backup goalie, and you're not
- 2:02:10Speaker 8: stressing when it's a pretty big game. Got to go
- 2:02:14Speaker 8: with Vemelka because we're in a playoff chase.
- 2:02:20Speaker 2: But, you know... we'll see what the numbers are.
- 2:02:23Speaker 8: Like Kosa could be the backup and have a better
- 2:02:27Speaker 8: save percentage and we'll see. But the biggest thing I
- 2:02:31Speaker 8: think for Kosa is the confidence that the team already
- 2:02:36Speaker 8: has in him. Bears brought that up. Like when you,
- 2:02:41Speaker 8: when you believe in your goalie, just, just changes everything.
- 2:02:46Speaker 8: Cause you're not, you're not looking in the back here,
- 2:02:50Speaker 8: your head, your, You're just playing. You're not thinking, oh boy,
- 2:02:54Speaker 8: if I turn this puck over, it's in the back
- 2:02:57Speaker 8: of the net. So the confidence, I think, is the
- 2:03:03Speaker 8: dynamic we talked about with Boot and Simishev. And for Utah,
- 2:03:06Speaker 8: it's off to a pretty good start with their new
- 2:03:10Speaker 8: backup goalie.
- 2:03:12Speaker 4: Adrian Denny for a few more minutes here between the
- 2:03:15Speaker 4: pipes brought to you by our friends at Aladdin industries
- 2:03:17Speaker 4: and Valley plumbing, heating, and cooling talking all things, Utah
- 2:03:20Speaker 4: mammoths as they get their season started tomorrow night against
- 2:03:24Speaker 4: the Chicago Blackhawks. You and I talked about this many
- 2:03:28Speaker 4: times during our visits last year, and we'll do it
- 2:03:33Speaker 4: again on the first one this year, because since our
- 2:03:36Speaker 4: last show together, We had a couple more contract extensions
- 2:03:40Speaker 4: signed around the NHL that continue to highlight how well
- 2:03:46Speaker 4: Bill Armstrong and company have done in getting good bargains,
- 2:03:50Speaker 4: signing incredibly productive players at team-friendly deals. Leo Carlson extended
- 2:03:57Speaker 4: with Anaheim five years, $ 90 million, $ 18 million a year.
- 2:04:00Speaker 2: I think.
- 2:04:03Speaker 4: Anaheim actually did okay with Carter Gaultier because it seemed
- 2:04:06Speaker 4: like maybe they were going to have to pay more
- 2:04:08Speaker 4: for him than they ended up. But that's still $ 13. 25
- 2:04:11Speaker 4: million per year. These are more expensive contracts than any
- 2:04:15Speaker 4: of the Cooleys and Kellers and Gunthers and all these
- 2:04:19Speaker 4: guys that have been so huge for the Utah Mammoth.
- 2:04:22Speaker 4: And that, of course, lends itself to further flexibility, continuing
- 2:04:27Speaker 4: to tweak the roster and hopefully make this sustainable for
- 2:04:31Speaker 4: the long term.
- 2:04:33Speaker 8: And I think if you talk to Bill Armstrong, the GM,
- 2:04:37Speaker 8: or Chris Armstrong, the president of business operations, they'd throw
- 2:04:41Speaker 8: the compliments back to the players for signing those long-term
- 2:04:48Speaker 8: deals and committing to the organization while understanding that if
- 2:04:54Speaker 8: you take all of the pizza, then there's not a
- 2:04:58Speaker 8: lot of pizza left for your teammates around you and
- 2:05:04Speaker 8: you want to win a Stanley Cup. The more pizza
- 2:05:08Speaker 8: to go around, the better. I think the Mammoth are
- 2:05:14Speaker 8: giving stick taps to their players like Nick Schmaltz, who
- 2:05:17Speaker 8: signed before he went to free agency, like Logan Cooley
- 2:05:20Speaker 8: and Dylan Gunther, who signed well ahead of their contracts
- 2:05:25Speaker 8: expiring July 1st on back-to-back years. Keller has two years left,
- 2:05:32Speaker 8: but those guys would say, yeah, well look at it here.
- 2:05:37Speaker 8: Who wouldn't, who wouldn't want to be here? We have
- 2:05:40Speaker 8: everything that, that we need and we love it here.
- 2:05:44Speaker 8: We want to be here and let's go win a championship.
- 2:05:48Speaker 8: So kudos to everybody involved. Bill Armstrong always, you know,
- 2:05:53Speaker 8: applaud his assistant general manager, David Ludwig, who's the, the
- 2:05:57Speaker 8: numbers guy, the capologist for making everything work and making
- 2:06:01Speaker 8: everything fit and having everything planned out. But I think
- 2:06:05Speaker 8: some pretty good relationships and connections from the players to
- 2:06:10Speaker 8: the management and everybody coming together to collectively get those
- 2:06:15Speaker 8: deals done and keeping all those guys here long-term and
- 2:06:19Speaker 8: still keeping some pizza left over for some stuff down
- 2:06:23Speaker 8: the road when you're eyeing that that cup and right
- 2:06:27Speaker 8: in the window.
- 2:06:30Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: So Chicago Blackhawks to start the season and then you
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: go on the road for a little bit and then
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: you come back toward the end of the month, but
- 2:06:38Speaker 1: focusing on opening night at the Delta center tomorrow night,
- 2:06:42Speaker 1: what should fans people expect from this first matchup?
- 2:06:46Speaker 2: Chicago played last night in Vegas. They lost.
- 2:06:50Speaker 8: I'm not as concerned about Utah opening up a team
- 2:06:53Speaker 8: that's already played in a home opener. as I was
- 2:06:57Speaker 8: last year when the mammoth opened the season in Colorado
- 2:07:00Speaker 8: for the home opener for the abs. And they'd already
- 2:07:03Speaker 8: played in LA. I thought that was just a huge
- 2:07:06Speaker 8: uphill challenge. And of course it's the NHL. So the
- 2:07:09Speaker 8: game finished two to one, but you know, the Delta
- 2:07:15Speaker 8: centers pushed Utah and it's some pretty good spots in
- 2:07:19Speaker 8: their home openers. And again, it's the NHL, everything's close,
- 2:07:22Speaker 8: but I think you look at, the electricity in the
- 2:07:28Speaker 8: arena for big event nights, like an opening night of
- 2:07:33Speaker 8: the first playoff game. And you can say that the
- 2:07:35Speaker 8: atmosphere kind of pushed the team along in both opening
- 2:07:39Speaker 8: nights against Chicago two years ago against Calgary last year,
- 2:07:44Speaker 8: Utah just kind of took the momentum and ran with it.
- 2:07:46Speaker 8: They they've scored three straight goals in both home openers,
- 2:07:49Speaker 8: both home openers have been one goal games in the
- 2:07:52Speaker 8: third period, but they've been able to push it.
- 2:07:54Speaker 2: So expect, a close.
- 2:07:56Speaker 8: Game and expect the Delta center to push it over
- 2:08:01Speaker 8: the top. Cause that's just how things go in salt Lake. When,
- 2:08:07Speaker 8: when there's magic in the air on an opening night
- 2:08:09Speaker 8: or first playoff game or, or big games, that's, it's
- 2:08:13Speaker 8: just the importance of the, of the home ice advantage.
- 2:08:17Speaker 4: Obviously we'll, We'll revise our opinions on this next question
- 2:08:21Speaker 4: as the season progresses and we learn a little bit more.
- 2:08:23Speaker 4: But where's the greatest mobility in the NHL this year,
- 2:08:29Speaker 4: either up or down from a team standpoint?
- 2:08:32Speaker 2: Who improves the most? Maybe who's going to have a
- 2:08:35Speaker 2: down year?
- 2:08:35Speaker 8: San Jose is the trendy pick, right? I think they
- 2:08:40Speaker 8: might struggle because of questions on their blue line with
- 2:08:46Speaker 8: their defensemen and their goaltending. So, San Jose's trendy, right?
- 2:08:52Speaker 8: They were in the mix until the last couple weeks
- 2:08:55Speaker 8: last year, kind of like Utah was the year before.
- 2:08:58Speaker 8: I think the team to watch out for in the
- 2:09:00Speaker 8: Central Division is Winnipeg. They had the best record in
- 2:09:05Speaker 8: the NHL two years ago. Last year, their soon-to-be gold
- 2:09:11Speaker 8: medalist in between the pipes, Connor Helleput, got hurt in November.
- 2:09:15Speaker 2: They got off to a 7-2 start.
- 2:09:19Speaker 8: They were ticketed again, and then he got hurt, and
- 2:09:21Speaker 8: then he came back and wasn't quite the same, and
- 2:09:24Speaker 8: they finished 500. But this year, Hellebuck's not there, O.C.,
- 2:09:29Speaker 8: because he has a trade request submitted. Winnipeg has not
- 2:09:34Speaker 8: made a move, so he's not there. But they did
- 2:09:37Speaker 8: sign Stuart Skinner in the offseason, who is a goalie
- 2:09:41Speaker 8: that was a part of Edmonton going to back-to-back Stanley
- 2:09:45Speaker 8: Cup finals.
- 2:09:47Speaker 3: And.
- 2:09:49Speaker 8: he's going to carry the load. And I, I think,
- 2:09:51Speaker 8: I think he's fine. He was an Edmonton boy. It
- 2:09:57Speaker 8: was really unfair to him. I thought how the blame
- 2:10:02Speaker 8: was placed on him because gosh, if you watched Edmonton
- 2:10:06Speaker 8: Vancouver last night, you see how they hang their goalies
- 2:10:08Speaker 8: out to dry, no matter who it is. But they, they,
- 2:10:13Speaker 8: they shipped him off in a hastily constructed trade to Pittsburgh.
- 2:10:18Speaker 8: and their goaltending situation got worse. So I say watch
- 2:10:22Speaker 8: out for Winnipeg, two years removed from having the best
- 2:10:24Speaker 8: record and then missing the playoffs. Washington might be the
- 2:10:28Speaker 8: only other team in the NHL that you could compare
- 2:10:30Speaker 8: to Utah in terms of off-seasons. Getting Alex Tuck from
- 2:10:34Speaker 8: Buffalo was a big move, and they've made some others.
- 2:10:41Speaker 8: So Washington might shoot back to the top after missing
- 2:10:45Speaker 8: the playoffs last year I don't think you can say Colorado, Minnesota,
- 2:10:51Speaker 8: and Dallas, three teams ahead of Utah in the division,
- 2:10:53Speaker 8: got better.
- 2:10:54Speaker 2: They all had subtractions.
- 2:10:55Speaker 8: Minnesota had to go out and hastily construct a trade
- 2:10:58Speaker 8: with Calgary when the Mammoth traded for Vincent Trocek and
- 2:11:02Speaker 8: signed Anders Lee because they wanted both of them.
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: How sincere was the flirtation with bringing Hellebuck to Salt
- 2:11:12Speaker 1: Lake City?
- 2:11:15Speaker 8: Utah's going to be brought up in everything. Utah's going
- 2:11:18Speaker 8: to be brought up because it's they've got cap space
- 2:11:24Speaker 8: it's a desirable location great ownership so utah is going
- 2:11:29Speaker 8: to be talked about for everything bill armstrong is going
- 2:11:33Speaker 8: to say it's my job to make calls on everything
- 2:11:35Speaker 8: it's my job to improve the team no matter what
- 2:11:38Speaker 8: so they call on everybody sure just a matter of
- 2:11:42Speaker 8: can you make a deal that that makes sense that's
- 2:11:46Speaker 8: not going to you know, not compromise anything and not
- 2:11:50Speaker 8: take anything for the future out of this. Cause they
- 2:11:55Speaker 8: want this to be a, something that just keeps recycling
- 2:11:59Speaker 8: itself in terms of good team playoffs. Let's make a
- 2:12:02Speaker 8: run and win it. Like this isn't a one year
- 2:12:05Speaker 8: window to your window five year. This is okay. We
- 2:12:07Speaker 8: want to do this every single year. So those are
- 2:12:10Speaker 8: the things they got, you know, to, to juggle. And, um,
- 2:12:17Speaker 8: you know, Winnipeg isn't parting ways with him, you know,
- 2:12:23Speaker 8: for anything. And I think that's great because I think
- 2:12:26Speaker 8: every time a guy requests a trade, Quinn Hughes, as
- 2:12:32Speaker 8: an example, teams fold their tents and just get the
- 2:12:35Speaker 8: deal done. So, for me, kudos to Kevin Sheveldayoff, former
- 2:12:40Speaker 8: Utah Grizzlies assistant coach, the GM of Winnipeg, and the
- 2:12:43Speaker 8: Detroit Red Wings, who have another trade– requests from a
- 2:12:47Speaker 8: team USA gold medalist and Dylan Larkin, who was their captain.
- 2:12:50Speaker 8: They've taken that off. He is going to play, but
- 2:12:53Speaker 8: they haven't given those guys away. They haven't folded their tents.
- 2:12:56Speaker 8: And I, I really admire him for that. Cause gosh,
- 2:12:59Speaker 8: looking at some of these deals, you get Quinn Hughes,
- 2:13:03Speaker 8: Brady Kachuk.
- 2:13:03Speaker 2: I'm like, seriously.
- 2:13:04Speaker 8: Yeah. I, I could, you're not a, could you not
- 2:13:09Speaker 8: have done something better?
- 2:13:10Speaker 2: Cause I think you could.
- 2:13:11Speaker 4: I actually think it's interesting too, because, uh, You could
- 2:13:14Speaker 4: probably get away with that in the NHL in a
- 2:13:16Speaker 4: way that you can't in other pro sports leagues because
- 2:13:20Speaker 4: of the culture of hockey. Because in like a case
- 2:13:24Speaker 4: with Larkin, even if he doesn't want to be there,
- 2:13:27Speaker 4: he's going to be a professional. And maybe you don't
- 2:13:29Speaker 4: get the best, best, best, best version of him. But
- 2:13:32Speaker 4: it's not really acceptable in hockey to sit down and pout.
- 2:13:36Speaker 4: and that that's totally okay in basketball. That's totally okay
- 2:13:40Speaker 4: in pro football. Like guys do that. And their peers
- 2:13:44Speaker 4: around the league, maybe behind the scenes are criticizing them,
- 2:13:48Speaker 4: but to their face, they're just like, yeah, man, do
- 2:13:50Speaker 4: what's best for you.
- 2:13:51Speaker 2: Get your money, get your whatever.
- 2:13:52Speaker 4: It feels like in hockey, there's more of a, an
- 2:13:56Speaker 4: expectation that like, even if you're not a hundred percent happy,
- 2:13:59Speaker 4: you're still a hockey player.
- 2:14:00Speaker 2: So you're going to play some hockey for us.
- 2:14:02Speaker 4: And that's, I think that gives the team's, a little
- 2:14:05Speaker 4: bit more of a leg to stand on if that's accurate.
- 2:14:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:14:07Speaker 8: And Connor Hellebuck's not in camp with Winnipeg. He's not
- 2:14:10Speaker 8: going to start the season with them is he's got
- 2:14:12Speaker 8: his trade request in and, you know, his teammates with,
- 2:14:16Speaker 8: with Winnipeg have said, Hey, look, he comes better be
- 2:14:20Speaker 8: all in.
- 2:14:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:14:21Speaker 2: That's, that's it.
- 2:14:22Speaker 8: Like there's no, we'll welcome him back with open arms.
- 2:14:24Speaker 8: If he would just please come. It's like, well, if
- 2:14:27Speaker 8: he's serious about it and he wants to be a
- 2:14:28Speaker 8: Winnipeg jet, come on in, you know?
- 2:14:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:14:34Speaker 2: Fascinating stuff. All right. I'll see you out there tomorrow night,
- 2:14:38Speaker 2: I guess. Can't wait, man. Stop by.
- 2:14:40Speaker 4: Mammoth hockey is back, baby. I know you've been champing
- 2:14:43Speaker 4: at the bit for this for months now.
- 2:14:44Speaker 8: Oh, this is it. Last night watching the NHL was like, oh,
- 2:14:49Speaker 8: this is so much fun. Have you gone to any
- 2:14:52Speaker 8: Utah games yet?
- 2:14:54Speaker 2: No. I have been out of town for all three,
- 2:15:01Speaker 2: I guess. All right. Yeah.
- 2:15:03Speaker 8: So I've missed it. Well, maybe next week against Kansas.
- 2:15:07Speaker 8: Looking forward to it. Loving it, man. Loving the 4-0.
- 2:15:10Speaker 8: Loving how they're playing. It's smash-mouth football that reminds me
- 2:15:16Speaker 8: of the two years that Urban Meyer was here. Just
- 2:15:18Speaker 8: no nonsense. Just go to town. Really enjoyed it. Plus
- 2:15:21Speaker 8: the offense.
- 2:15:23Speaker 2: Adrian Denny's a Ute. He's also our Mammoth Insider.
- 2:15:25Speaker 4: Brought to you by our friends at Atlanta Industries in
- 2:15:29Speaker 4: Utah in Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
- 2:15:31Speaker 2: Adrian, good to see you. Thanks, OC. Great to be back, man.
- 2:15:34Speaker 2: It's like I never left. I feel like I never left.
- 2:15:36Speaker 4: Speaking of Utah football, ESPN put out a list ranking
- 2:15:40Speaker 4: the power four quarterbacks through four games of the season.
- 2:15:43Speaker 4: Where does Devin Dan Pierce sit? I'll tell you next
- 2:15:46Speaker 4: on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700 and 92 on FM.
- 2:15:55Speaker 6: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch

- 2:16:52Speaker 4: go play some of the video games at Dave and
- 2:16:54Speaker 4: Buster's head back over to the bar and refresh your
- 2:16:56Speaker 4: beverage or use that time to order yourself some more
- 2:17:00Speaker 4: onion rings and such Dave and Buster's UFC three 32.
- 2:17:06Speaker 4: If you're a serious UFC fan, ask Dave and Buster's
- 2:17:09Speaker 4: about their UFC membership.
- 2:17:12Speaker 2: It's $ 50.
- 2:17:13Speaker 4: It includes a custom UFC collectible power card located with
- 2:17:18Speaker 4: $ 35 in game chips, plus year-round perks like 50% off
- 2:17:22Speaker 4: games and 20% off food and beverages during every UFC fight.
- 2:17:26Speaker 4: So you now have a place to go watch every
- 2:17:30Speaker 4: single UFC event.
- 2:17:32Speaker 2: It's Dave and Buster's.
- 2:17:34Speaker 4: In the Gateway, downtown Salt Lake City, fight night done right.
- 2:17:43Speaker 4: All right, where do you think Devin Dampier ranks, according
- 2:17:46Speaker 4: to ESPN, among the quarterbacks in power football? All 68
- 2:17:51Speaker 4: power four quarterbacks ranked by ESPN based on what they
- 2:17:57Speaker 4: have done through four games, or in the case of some,
- 2:17:59Speaker 4: like BYU, who've only had three. The top five are
- 2:18:03Speaker 4: Darian Mensah from Miami, who's... Passed for 1,200 yards. He
- 2:18:10Speaker 4: has 63 rush yards. He has 15 total touchdowns.
- 2:18:14Speaker 2: Number two, C.J.
- 2:18:15Speaker 4: Carr at Notre Dame, 963 passing yards, 22 rushing yards,
- 2:18:19Speaker 4: 11 total touchdowns. Ohio State's Julian Sayen, 1,200 yards passing,
- 2:18:25Speaker 4: 40 yards rushing, 12 touchdowns. Trinidad Chambliss comes in at
- 2:18:31Speaker 4: number four on their rankings, 1,200 pass yards, 139 rush yards,
- 2:18:37Speaker 4: 12 total touchdowns. Camario Taylor from Mississippi State, who is
- 2:18:43Speaker 4: ranked 48th in the preseason quarterback rankings, way down near
- 2:18:49Speaker 4: the bottom. He is at number five, 1,192 passing yards,
- 2:18:51Speaker 4: 219 rushing yards, 15 total touchdowns. He is 9.1 yards
- 2:18:59Speaker 4: per drop back. He's 14 touchdowns and two interceptions right now.
- 2:19:04Speaker 4: He is in the Heisman conversation already, and we're going
- 2:19:08Speaker 4: to talk more about him on the show tomorrow because
- 2:19:11Speaker 4: the tampering for Camario Taylor has already begun in earnest,
- 2:19:16Speaker 4: and they're not even trying to hide it. It's on
- 2:19:18Speaker 4: national television. We will discuss that on the show tomorrow.
- 2:19:22Speaker 4: We didn't get a chance to do it today. So
- 2:19:24Speaker 4: that's your top five. James, where do you think ESPN
- 2:19:29Speaker 4: has Devin damp here?
- 2:19:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:19:32Speaker 1: Not in the top five, top 20, 18. Maybe he's
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: number 14. So not a bad guess.
- 2:19:38Speaker 2: Top 15.
- 2:19:40Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 2:19:40Speaker 2: I underestimated you, Devin, which is interestingly enough.
- 2:19:43Speaker 4: It's a, they had him 12 post spring ball, right?
- 2:19:47Speaker 4: So this is two spots down for him. 896 passing yards,
- 2:19:50Speaker 4: 150 rushing yards, 11 total touchdowns.
- 2:19:51Speaker 2: He is number 14 down.
- 2:19:51Speaker 4: 13 right ahead of him is Connor Wegman from Houston, 947,
- 2:20:00Speaker 4: 116 rushing yards. He's produced 14 total touchdowns. The highest
- 2:20:04Speaker 4: ranked in the big 12 conference is drew Mesta maker,
- 2:20:09Speaker 4: who is also two spots down from his post spring
- 2:20:12Speaker 4: football ranking. 1,271 yards, 125 rushing.
- 2:20:17Speaker 2: Yards, 12 total touchdowns.
- 2:20:19Speaker 4: So a lot of these guys are simply productive for him.
- 2:20:22Speaker 1: He's number nine, number nine. And he was seven post spring.
- 2:20:26Speaker 1: It's gotta be like Camario Taylor. And maybe one other
- 2:20:31Speaker 1: guy just jumped ahead of those three guys, why they're
- 2:20:34Speaker 1: two spots down, right?
- 2:20:36Speaker 4: It's not Mario Taylor and Keelan Russell from Alabama who
- 2:20:39Speaker 4: they had ranked 28th in the preseason.
- 2:20:41Speaker 2: He's looked really good too.
- 2:20:43Speaker 4: He's got 223 rushing yards to go with 1100 passing yards.
- 2:20:48Speaker 4: So look, I think this is a good place for
- 2:20:50Speaker 4: Devin Dan pier to be. I think that, you know,
- 2:20:53Speaker 4: his production, when you compare it to what these other
- 2:20:55Speaker 4: guys have, he's right there. in the same conversation, bear
- 2:21:00Speaker 4: Bachmeier at BYU is right below Devin. He's number 15.
- 2:21:03Speaker 4: And they're actually like his production is drastically lower than
- 2:21:09Speaker 4: everyone else on this list. He's playing really well with
- 2:21:12Speaker 4: his like completion percentage, his yards per attempt. They're not
- 2:21:18Speaker 4: making him do anything yet at BYU. Like that's BYU
- 2:21:22Speaker 4: has won their first three games of the season without
- 2:21:25Speaker 4: bear Bachmeier having to be bear Bachmeier.
- 2:21:28Speaker 2: Which is kind of alarming. If we're being honest, two
- 2:21:30Speaker 2: of those.
- 2:21:31Speaker 1: Games, it was kind of without LJ Martin being LJ
- 2:21:34Speaker 1: Martin too. It wasn't until Colorado state was two weeks ago,
- 2:21:39Speaker 1: I guess, coming up on two weeks ago that he
- 2:21:41Speaker 1: really broke out for the season. So they've been able
- 2:21:44Speaker 1: to win without their two offensive stars being at having
- 2:21:48Speaker 1: to be at their best production wise.
- 2:21:51Speaker 2: Bear Bachmeier has 642 passing yards.
- 2:21:52Speaker 4: 79 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns.
- 2:21:58Speaker 2: So he's at least.
- 2:21:59Speaker 4: Three below everyone else above him on the list in
- 2:22:01Speaker 4: total touchdowns. He's basically halfway there in terms of the
- 2:22:05Speaker 4: top passers in the, on the list.
- 2:22:08Speaker 1: And he, you know, we know he's a really capable runner.
- 2:22:11Speaker 1: He's a really solid runner.
- 2:22:13Speaker 4: He hasn't even rushed for a total of a hundred
- 2:22:14Speaker 4: yards so far on the season, but it's only through
- 2:22:17Speaker 4: three games.
- 2:22:19Speaker 2: Michael Hawkins Jr.
- 2:22:20Speaker 4: Has jumped up into the top 20 here. He's number
- 2:22:25Speaker 4: 17 on the ESPN list after being 50th post-spring.
- 2:22:29Speaker 2: Wow, that's a big jump.
- 2:22:31Speaker 4: 464 rushing yards puts him way up there. I think
- 2:22:34Speaker 4: that's the highest among all QBs in the nation right now.
- 2:22:36Speaker 4: 14 total touchdowns. That's also a big number. Sam Levitt
- 2:22:41Speaker 4: has gone down. Avery Johnson is up one spot.
- 2:22:46Speaker 3: Not a....
- 2:22:48Speaker 1: Not an incredible night for him against Cincinnati.
- 2:22:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:22:51Speaker 4: I think that was a tough one for him against
- 2:22:53Speaker 4: Cincinnati and look, they've been, they've done a really good
- 2:22:55Speaker 4: job with him of letting him be what he should be.
- 2:22:59Speaker 2: He's a dual threat quarterback. He's not a true drop
- 2:23:01Speaker 2: back pastor.
- 2:23:02Speaker 4: He's not a particularly accurate thrower and they're setting him
- 2:23:05Speaker 4: up for success on that front and letting him use
- 2:23:08Speaker 4: his legs.
- 2:23:08Speaker 1: He is like, he's got an elite stride. He's got
- 2:23:12Speaker 1: great speed.
- 2:23:13Speaker 4: One of the things that you notice about Avery Johnson,
- 2:23:16Speaker 4: when he's playing quarterback, when he pulls the ball down
- 2:23:18Speaker 4: and he scrambles, you look at him run and you're
- 2:23:20Speaker 4: just like, Oh, that it's easier. That guy runs easier
- 2:23:23Speaker 4: than all human beings. Like running for him is simple.
- 2:23:28Speaker 2: It's like, this is.
- 2:23:30Speaker 1: Going way back now, but it's like Pat white watching
- 2:23:35Speaker 1: Pat white back in the day for West Virginia. Like
- 2:23:37Speaker 1: that guy just, he looked like a gazelle running And
- 2:23:41Speaker 1: he was really tall, too, so the long legs helped
- 2:23:44Speaker 1: him see that. Avery Johnson is a similar guy where
- 2:23:46Speaker 1: it's just like, you just look like you were born
- 2:23:50Speaker 1: to run the football from the quarterback position.
- 2:23:54Speaker 4: Noah Fafita rounds out the Big 12 quarterbacks in the
- 2:23:58Speaker 4: top 25 on this ESPN list. He is sitting at
- 2:24:02Speaker 4: number 23. 1,131 passing yards, 157 rushing yards, and 13
- 2:24:09Speaker 4: total touchdowns. So Noel Fafita, he's played pretty well. He's
- 2:24:13Speaker 4: fourth in the country right now in completion percentage. He's
- 2:24:17Speaker 4: completing 75% of his passes. Now, they're short passes, and
- 2:24:23Speaker 4: it's dink and dunk, and that's all they're asking him
- 2:24:26Speaker 4: to do, but that's good coaching. You're not asking the
- 2:24:30Speaker 4: guy to do something that, You're not getting elite protection
- 2:24:34Speaker 4: on the offensive line. He doesn't see well over the
- 2:24:37Speaker 4: offensive line as his receivers are moving. So they're putting
- 2:24:42Speaker 4: him in situations where he can succeed.
- 2:24:45Speaker 1: I'm curious where Madsen is, Boise State, because they've had
- 2:24:49Speaker 1: an incredible start to the season, and I feel like
- 2:24:53Speaker 1: he's looked better than he has in years past.
- 2:24:55Speaker 2: I'm scrolling.
- 2:24:56Speaker 4: Will Hammond at Texas Tech is 38th on the list,
- 2:24:58Speaker 4: by the way. I haven't seen Cutter Boldy at Arizona
- 2:25:03Speaker 4: State is 44th. Jaden Craig at TCU is 46th. Jalen Rayner,
- 2:25:08Speaker 4: who we just saw from Iowa State, he's at 47th.
- 2:25:13Speaker 4: John Mateer, 48th.
- 2:25:14Speaker 2: Ouch.
- 2:25:16Speaker 1: You were so right about that, though, the other day
- 2:25:18Speaker 1: when you said Utah dodged a bullet. I mean, so
- 2:25:22Speaker 1: glad they got the Beck, Devin Dampier.
- 2:25:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:25:28Speaker 1: Can a combination last year. And now that now Devin's
- 2:25:31Speaker 1: decided to stick around without Jason back here, like that,
- 2:25:35Speaker 1: maybe it would have been better with our buckle and
- 2:25:37Speaker 1: mature at Utah than it's been.
- 2:25:39Speaker 2: At Oklahoma, but it has not been good at Oklahoma. Oh,
- 2:25:43Speaker 2: I'm looking for, this is power quarterback. Oh, he's a power. Okay.
- 2:25:46Speaker 2: My bet. That was like, I'm scrolling. I'm scrolling.
- 2:25:48Speaker 1: Tate Reynolds, the other Trey's brother, Trey Reynolds is 66th.
- 2:25:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:25:55Speaker 3: Out of 68.
- 2:25:55Speaker 4: So not a friendly, evaluation for him on that. But
- 2:26:00Speaker 4: a couple of wins in a row though, for Clemson
- 2:26:02Speaker 4: after a, just a terrible loss, a blowout loss to LSU.
- 2:26:11Speaker 4: There's a chicken and egg argument to be had with
- 2:26:14Speaker 4: all this, of course. But when you look at the,
- 2:26:18Speaker 4: the top teams in the conference and the top teams
- 2:26:21Speaker 4: in the country, the teams that are performing the way
- 2:26:23Speaker 4: that people hope they would, their quarterbacks are up there
- 2:26:27Speaker 4: and they're, The teams that are maybe performing below expectation,
- 2:26:31Speaker 4: they're further down on the list with quarterback play. And
- 2:26:34Speaker 4: it's just, there are very few things in sports, professional
- 2:26:38Speaker 4: or otherwise, that link so directly that the causality and
- 2:26:42Speaker 4: the correlation are nearly identical when it comes to quarterback
- 2:26:46Speaker 4: play and your ability to win football games and climb rankings. Yeah,
- 2:26:50Speaker 4: and just real quick on Drew Mastabaker, I'm glad that
- 2:26:55Speaker 4: after that awful loss to Tulsa, He and Oklahoma State,
- 2:27:00Speaker 4: particularly on offense, are looking the way that they have.
- 2:27:03Speaker 4: First beating Oregon, of course, and then they looked incredible
- 2:27:06Speaker 4: against West Virginia last week, too. Because they had otherworldly hype,
- 2:27:15Speaker 4: and I came on here and said I hated the hype.
- 2:27:18Speaker 4: But I'm glad they're putting it together and they're showing that, hey,
- 2:27:21Speaker 4: this immense talent that they brought up from the group
- 2:27:24Speaker 4: of five level is phenomenal. is what a lot of
- 2:27:27Speaker 4: the college ball experts was.
- 2:27:29Speaker 2: Going to be.
- 2:27:29Speaker 1: Because it's exciting and it's great for the Big 12.
- 2:27:32Speaker 1: Hopefully they keep it going. I just would, I would
- 2:27:34Speaker 1: have liked for us to, you know, crown them now
- 2:27:37Speaker 1: instead of in the preseason.
- 2:27:38Speaker 2: That's all, but it's awesome to see. All right.
- 2:27:43Speaker 4: We'll wrap up the show next. Closing it out with
- 2:27:47Speaker 4: a little crosstalk head to Dave and busters for the
- 2:27:51Speaker 4: UFC event this weekend. They're down at the gateway. They
- 2:27:53Speaker 4: got great food, great drinks, great specials. And right now
- 2:27:56Speaker 4: a $ 50 UFC membership. That gives you $ 35 in game chips,
- 2:28:02Speaker 4: year-round perks, 50% off games, and 20% off food and
- 2:28:06Speaker 4: beverages during every UFC fight event. UFC in Salt Lake
- 2:28:12Speaker 4: City this weekend, great place to watch it, Dave & Buster's.
- 2:28:15Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700, 92 on FM. I can
- 2:28:17Speaker 4: feel it coming in.
- 2:28:18Speaker 2: The air tonight.
- 2:28:26Speaker 6: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:28:29Speaker 6: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:28:34Speaker 4: Final segment of The Sean O'Connell Show brought to you
- 2:28:45Speaker 4: by Friends at Advanced Window Products. They do a lifetime
- 2:28:48Speaker 4: warranty on replacement windows.
- 2:28:50Speaker 2: Call them now at 801-850-9100.
- 2:28:53Speaker 4: Telemosi sent you $ 2, 500 off 10 windows or more, and
- 2:28:59Speaker 4: they'll prorate that discount if you don't need more than
- 2:29:02Speaker 4: 10 windows. Spence Checketts and The Drive are up next.
- 2:29:07Speaker 4: We asked a question during crosstalk yesterday that I turned
- 2:29:10Speaker 4: into a poll question. If college football were to settle
- 2:29:15Speaker 4: on a Big 40, Big 10 and SEC allowed to
- 2:29:20Speaker 4: expand to 20 teams each, Would Utah and or BYU.
- 2:29:24Speaker 2: Make the cut?
- 2:29:25Speaker 4: 56%, 56.5% of you think that yes, they would. 43.5%
- 2:29:29Speaker 4: say no, they would not. So, interesting results on the
- 2:29:36Speaker 4: debate we were having yesterday.
- 2:29:37Speaker 3: Hi, Spence.
- 2:29:37Speaker 7: Yeah, that's closer than I would have expected based off
- 2:29:40Speaker 7: the assumption that most of your followers are Utah football fans.
- 2:29:44Speaker 7: You made some really compelling points. I do think when you...
- 2:29:49Speaker 7: expand the conversation to the possibility of the Big 12
- 2:29:52Speaker 7: and the SEC being allowed to maybe shed some dead
- 2:29:55Speaker 7: weight with certain teams. Because, you know, you were talking
- 2:29:59Speaker 7: about TV market size. There are plenty of teams at
- 2:30:02Speaker 7: both conferences that are in podunk places that nobody wants
- 2:30:05Speaker 7: to go visit. So if you combine that, like, look,
- 2:30:09Speaker 7: Arkansas once upon a time was an awesome football program,
- 2:30:13Speaker 7: but they're barely a P4 team.
- 2:30:16Speaker 2: This year, and maybe that'll change.
- 2:30:18Speaker 4: I actually wonder how much of it, when it does
- 2:30:22Speaker 4: shuffle again, is going to not, you know, because the
- 2:30:28Speaker 4: television market thing was very important during the Pac-12 realignment
- 2:30:32Speaker 4: and even in this last round of realignment.
- 2:30:34Speaker 2: I don't think it ever should have been such a
- 2:30:36Speaker 2: big deal, but it was.
- 2:30:38Speaker 4: I wonder how much NIL contribution and your operating football
- 2:30:42Speaker 4: budget is going to tell a story for when it
- 2:30:45Speaker 4: happens again. Because if you can pay what the other
- 2:30:49Speaker 4: guys are paying, if you can operate at the level
- 2:30:51Speaker 4: that the Big Ten decides you're expected to operate in
- 2:30:55Speaker 4: order to be part of their conference, then maybe you
- 2:30:57Speaker 4: get an invitation. If you're constantly crying poor and you're
- 2:31:00Speaker 4: struggling and you're having a hard time, then that more
- 2:31:03Speaker 4: than your television market size or your alumni base or
- 2:31:06Speaker 4: anything else, they might say, you know what, this is
- 2:31:09Speaker 4: big boy football.
- 2:31:10Speaker 2: If you're ready to spend this way, You're welcome here.
- 2:31:14Speaker 2: If not, there's the door.
- 2:31:16Speaker 7: I think that would absolutely be a consideration. Now, in
- 2:31:21Speaker 7: this conversation, certainly has to be included what the Protect
- 2:31:26Speaker 7: College Sports Act, should it pass. And after kind of
- 2:31:30Speaker 7: digging around last night a little bit, I don't have
- 2:31:34Speaker 7: a lot of faith that it's going to. The House
- 2:31:36Speaker 7: will be rushed back in November after the midterms during
- 2:31:41Speaker 7: a very truncated space to pass A bunch of different
- 2:31:44Speaker 7: pieces of legislation, the majority which have to do with
- 2:31:48Speaker 7: how we live life as people in this country, let
- 2:31:51Speaker 7: alone college football. So if that's pushed to the back
- 2:31:54Speaker 7: burner in January, it's going to be a brand new Congress.
- 2:31:57Speaker 7: And in that case, we start over with this thing.
- 2:32:00Speaker 7: So I don't think it's going to be passed.
- 2:32:02Speaker 2: But if it is.
- 2:32:05Speaker 7: How how much, you know, will all of these schools
- 2:32:09Speaker 7: be finally playing on equal footing? with the college football
- 2:32:13Speaker 7: version of the salary cap with capped transfers once every
- 2:32:17Speaker 7: five years right as opposed to what we've seen over
- 2:32:20Speaker 7: the past four or five years where it's the only
- 2:32:22Speaker 7: sport in the world that has free agency every offseason
- 2:32:28Speaker 7: so if all of these guidelines are put into place
- 2:32:31Speaker 7: then most everybody will be forced to you to play
- 2:32:35Speaker 7: with the same rules now the funny thing about this
- 2:32:39Speaker 7: conversation is what's happened in the history of the sport
- 2:32:44Speaker 7: and what will never change and what seems to have
- 2:32:47Speaker 7: been happening in the nba with caps or convention is
- 2:32:51Speaker 7: you know rich people with ideas will creatively go about
- 2:32:56Speaker 7: their business to circumvent rules to try to add talent
- 2:32:59Speaker 7: to their roster and not just keep up with the
- 2:33:02Speaker 7: joneses but find a competitive advantage but the ability to
- 2:33:05Speaker 7: invest in your football program will absolutely be part of
- 2:33:08Speaker 7: any sort of decision making how much will college basketball
- 2:33:12Speaker 7: come into play? I mean, look, it's, it's no different
- 2:33:16Speaker 7: than any other market. You put your money where the
- 2:33:18Speaker 7: most wise investment is. And in college athletics right now,
- 2:33:21Speaker 7: the best investment is college football by far college basketball
- 2:33:26Speaker 7: is still a big business, but it's only because of
- 2:33:27Speaker 7: March madness. It's about six months, six weeks out of
- 2:33:30Speaker 7: the year, but it's still a big business, right? So
- 2:33:34Speaker 7: if you can, you know, BYU has done a good
- 2:33:36Speaker 7: job of balancing both. If, if, if, hopefully I'll can
- 2:33:39Speaker 7: get this thing going for Utah basketball, because I do
- 2:33:42Speaker 7: think it's advantageous. Michigan's won a national championship in football
- 2:33:46Speaker 7: and basketball.
- 2:33:46Speaker 2: Over the past five years. Florida's on that list. You
- 2:33:49Speaker 2: can do both.
- 2:33:50Speaker 7: You don't have to do one or the other, but
- 2:33:51Speaker 7: the smart investment is football because that's where your ROI
- 2:33:54Speaker 7: comes from. It's not different than any other market. So
- 2:33:58Speaker 7: I do think it's advantageous and it's why there's so
- 2:34:01Speaker 7: much pressure, whether it's Kalani talking about like, Hey, you
- 2:34:04Speaker 7: said you were going to invest in the team. on
- 2:34:08Speaker 7: the level that Penn State told me they would invest
- 2:34:10Speaker 7: in me and you didn't do that. And prior to
- 2:34:13Speaker 7: those conversations, I think most people were under the assumption
- 2:34:16Speaker 7: that BYU was on that Texas Tech level, and they're not.
- 2:34:20Speaker 7: They're closer to Utah than they are Texas Tech. So, yes, rich,
- 2:34:25Speaker 7: wealthy boosters and donors will come into play. What do
- 2:34:28Speaker 7: you have to spend on your football team? If the
- 2:34:31Speaker 7: number is 48, 49, or whatever, are you willing to
- 2:34:35Speaker 7: go all the way to 48, 49?
- 2:34:36Speaker 2: Are you able.
- 2:34:38Speaker 2: To go all the way up there.
- 2:34:40Speaker 7: And if you're stuck in 22, 23, when everyone else
- 2:34:43Speaker 7: is spending 48, 49, there's probably not a seat for you.
- 2:34:45Speaker 1: Well, we know what it looks like already when, you know, the,
- 2:34:49Speaker 1: the athletic did the breakdown and there were a bunch
- 2:34:52Speaker 1: of teams in the big 10 that were in like
- 2:34:54Speaker 1: that 30 to 40 range and they're respectable.
- 2:34:57Speaker 2: They're competing. Iowa is overachieving.
- 2:35:00Speaker 4: Iowa was down in like that 20 to 25 range
- 2:35:03Speaker 4: and they're a ranked team, but Rutgers and Maryland and
- 2:35:07Speaker 4: Purdue are, even when they're spending $ 28 million, it's not
- 2:35:11Speaker 4: what it needs to be. Arkansas, even when they're spending
- 2:35:14Speaker 4: $ 26 or $ 27 million, it's not where it needs to be.
- 2:35:18Speaker 4: I don't like that we have to have those types
- 2:35:21Speaker 4: of conversations, but they're out there, and it was a
- 2:35:23Speaker 4: good shout from.
- 2:35:24Speaker 2: Everyone who participated in it today.
- 2:35:27Speaker 7: Well, it is kind of this elephant in the room,
- 2:35:32Speaker 7: and obviously we're in the middle of football season, so
- 2:35:34Speaker 7: it's nice to be able to focus on games, but
- 2:35:38Speaker 7: most people that cover the sport are most people that
- 2:35:40Speaker 7: are involved in the sport do believe that's where it's
- 2:35:42Speaker 7: going at some point who knows when TV deals go
- 2:35:46Speaker 7: to market in 2030 2031 so that's kinda natural like
- 2:35:50Speaker 7: are we gonna finally do it then the reason why
- 2:35:53Speaker 7: it's paramount and it's a worthwhile conversation is that if
- 2:35:58Speaker 7: it happens and Utah and BYU are in the group
- 2:36:02Speaker 7: safe footing forever right because.
- 2:36:05Speaker 2: Most people do believe.
- 2:36:07Speaker 7: Despite all the shifts under our feet with college football,
- 2:36:10Speaker 7: and you referenced the Pac-12, I remember the day I
- 2:36:14Speaker 7: heard that the Pac-12 was losing Los Angeles.
- 2:36:16Speaker 2: I'm like, this conference is screwed.
- 2:36:18Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:36:19Speaker 2: And they were, ultimately.
- 2:36:20Speaker 7: That ultimately was the biggest domino that fell, and anyone
- 2:36:23Speaker 7: that was paying attention was like, all right, we're done here.
- 2:36:26Speaker 7: And then the Big 12 gets the last TV deal,
- 2:36:28Speaker 7: and boom. But there are plenty of people, if you
- 2:36:32Speaker 7: kind of dig around, like the Bruce Feldmans and the
- 2:36:34Speaker 7: Stuart Mandels and such, that do believe.
- 2:36:37Speaker 2: there is one big.
- 2:36:38Speaker 7: Final domino that will fall that will make this thing
- 2:36:42Speaker 7: cemented in its reality. You never want to say forever,
- 2:36:46Speaker 7: but if, if the reality is two 20 team conferences,
- 2:36:49Speaker 7: that looks a lot like the NFL and you are
- 2:36:52Speaker 7: not part of that group, you are getting table scraps.
- 2:36:56Speaker 7: And that's why it's paramount for Utah and BYU to
- 2:36:59Speaker 7: get everything in order. So if that really is the
- 2:37:01Speaker 7: deal here, and even if it's not for four or
- 2:37:03Speaker 7: five years, you have to sit at that lunch table.
- 2:37:07Speaker 4: Stay tuned for The Drive with Spence Jenkins. Thanks for
- 2:37:10Speaker 4: listening to the Sean O'Connell Show today. We'll do it
- 2:37:13Speaker 4: again tomorrow on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
