- 0:19Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:21Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:24Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:26Speaker 1: have a guest join us. Check him out on the
- 0:29Speaker 1: Dominique Foxworth show.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Charlie Kravitz.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Donnie Fossberg, what's going on?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Not much. You did have Charlie on at some point.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 0:38Speaker 3: He hasn't accepted that he is like a personality now.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Like he thinks he's a producer who just helps me
- 0:44Speaker 3: out with the co-hosting.
- 0:46Speaker 2: But like people care about what he got to say.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's why I can't have him on because
- 0:51Speaker 1: he'll be another person on the list that me and
- 0:53Speaker 1: Ryan talk about. People who try to produce my goddamn show.
- 0:57Speaker 1: While my show was going on, right? The cats would
- 0:59Speaker 1: be like, all right, I know we're going to get
- 1:00Speaker 1: to this later, but hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. If
- 1:04Speaker 1: you got to say but, you need to not do this.
- 1:07Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? We can't have two people
- 1:09Speaker 1: drive Mr. Jesse Rob in this track.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't need my hands on the steering wheel.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I'm along for the ride. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Nah, man, it's been a lot here going on. We're
- 1:20Speaker 1: going to talk a little bit about the soccer ball.
- 1:23Speaker 1: We might get to Brendan Sorsby. Cats out here passing
- 1:25Speaker 1: bad checks. But actually, I just saw a number, and
- 1:29Speaker 1: I have not warned you about this at all, but
- 1:31Speaker 1: I never do, so it's okay. The numbers are in,
- 1:35Speaker 1: at least the numbers they've given us, and they're telling
- 1:37Speaker 1: us that these were the most watched NBA finals since 1998,
- 1:40Speaker 1: and that Game 5 peaked at 33 million viewers. Now,
- 1:46Speaker 1: I don't know what exactly viewer means, right? I don't
- 1:49Speaker 1: know exactly how they compiled these statistics because they've done
- 1:51Speaker 1: a lot of changes that have affected this, but isn't
- 1:55Speaker 1: it amazing? how the biggest city in America gets into
- 1:59Speaker 1: the NBA finals and suddenly everything feels like it's back
- 2:04Speaker 1: or at least that's the story and it becomes your
- 2:07Speaker 1: friendly reminder. You know something that was going on when
- 2:10Speaker 1: the Bulls were killing it? The third largest city in
- 2:13Speaker 1: America had the best basketball team. And then you know
- 2:16Speaker 1: what happened after that? The second largest city in America
- 2:20Speaker 1: had the best basketball team. You know what hasn't happened
- 2:23Speaker 1: in 50 years? the biggest city in America had the
- 2:27Speaker 1: basketball team.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I mean, and the Knicks, I mean, the Bulls going
- 2:33Speaker 3: through the Knicks, I imagine those were pretty popular series
- 2:35Speaker 3: back in the day. I think you're probably right about
- 2:38Speaker 3: the way we're calculating these things, but it doesn't really matter.
- 2:41Speaker 2: We know this was fucking huge. We all know it
- 2:44Speaker 2: was huge. We experienced it. It was incredible.
- 2:46Speaker 3: It felt like 2016, I guess, like those LeBron and...
- 2:52Speaker 3: Golden State series those felt like huge in this way
- 2:55Speaker 3: where everyone had to be there but this to me
- 2:57Speaker 3: honestly felt a little bigger and it was pretty cool
- 3:00Speaker 3: the way that it was kind of a vibe shift
- 3:03Speaker 3: around the NBA it felt like a lot of us
- 3:04Speaker 3: were down on the NBA and the fouls and all
- 3:07Speaker 3: that stuff and then The finals happened.
- 3:09Speaker 2: We all forgot. He just fell in love again.
- 3:11Speaker 1: So I think a few things happened because it's difficult
- 3:13Speaker 1: for me to gauge the magnitude of these finals because
- 3:17Speaker 1: I'm in the middle of it.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Right.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Like I don't, I don't know what it would have
- 3:22Speaker 1: had to happen for the Knicks to be this far.
- 3:24Speaker 1: It did not seem like the biggest thing that had
- 3:26Speaker 1: ever happened in the history of mankind.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Because I am in the epicenter of the people who
- 3:31Speaker 1: care the most.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 3:32Speaker 1: 100% about this. But. Playoff basketball, I would say, felt
- 3:38Speaker 1: like a return to what a lot of people say
- 3:42Speaker 1: they wanted, which is a bit more physicality to start, right? Now,
- 3:45Speaker 1: it wasn't the brand of physicality that I want. I
- 3:48Speaker 1: want hard fouls. I just don't, I don't want people
- 3:51Speaker 1: simply mucking it up, right? Like make it a little difficult, okay? No,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I want people to be scared, right? I want people
- 3:57Speaker 1: shooting mid-range jump shots because what's waiting on you in
- 4:00Speaker 1: there is a clothesline. That's part of why the mid-range
- 4:04Speaker 1: jumper went away is because it's a little too safe
- 4:08Speaker 1: down there in the paint. But when it was rough, rugged,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and raw, Katz was like, oh, let me stop right here.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Get this J as I can get it, right?
- 4:15Speaker 2: They don't, yeah.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I mean, they are pretty, like, loosey-goosey with the flagrers.
- 4:20Speaker 3: They don't want that back. But they let you grab
- 4:23Speaker 3: and push. They let you do all types of stuff.
- 4:24Speaker 3: And I know Wimby got away with a head mush
- 4:27Speaker 3: and some stuff like that. But generally, the stuff that
- 4:30Speaker 3: they think is going to lead to a fight, They
- 4:32Speaker 3: ain't got time for that.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But these boys ain't going to fight. That's the other part, too. Like,
- 4:35Speaker 1: you need to recognize that we got to, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 1: these boys too scared to fight now. We got a
- 4:39Speaker 1: long way to go before anybody actually starts fighting.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I mean, I guess I would say that they, the
- 4:46Speaker 3: reason why they don't fight is because the NBA has
- 4:49Speaker 3: handled the business the way they handle it. You think
- 4:52Speaker 3: that they wouldn't actually fight? I think they make the
- 4:54Speaker 3: decision not to fight.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I'm saying that they have legislated fighting out so much
- 4:57Speaker 1: that these dudes are conditioned not to fight, that there
- 4:59Speaker 1: will be a lag. before they actually get to the
- 5:03Speaker 1: point that they're going to be out here. We got
- 5:05Speaker 1: a little while that you can allow this to happen.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And I can tell you, these boys probably can't fight,
- 5:11Speaker 1: so ain't nobody really going to get hurt. I forget
- 5:14Speaker 1: what series that was. Maurice Lucas got into a fight
- 5:16Speaker 1: with somebody way back in the day. And it reminded
- 5:19Speaker 1: you it was a different time because them cats just
- 5:22Speaker 1: looked at each other. And this is back when everybody's
- 5:24Speaker 1: daddy went to the army. So they just looked at
- 5:26Speaker 1: each other and they squared up like they was in.
- 5:28Speaker 1: They put up their dukes because don't nobody put up
- 5:31Speaker 1: their dukes no more, right? They had their dukes up
- 5:34Speaker 1: and they was ready to go because everybody had like
- 5:36Speaker 1: a standard fighting technique that your daddy had taught you.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And now at this point, that's not really like what...
- 5:43Speaker 1: That's not what they do.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Do daddies still do that? Because like my dad definitely
- 5:47Speaker 3: taught me how to throw a punch. Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And I mean... I mean, you a daddy?
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I taught my son and my daughters how to
- 5:54Speaker 3: ball up your fist. Like, just important to know, don't
- 5:57Speaker 3: put your thumb in. Like, I feel like this happened
- 5:59Speaker 3: with both my daughters is they put their thumb in.
- 6:01Speaker 3: They're like, nah, I hope you never have to throw
- 6:03Speaker 3: a punch. You probably will never have to throw a punch, but, like,
- 6:07Speaker 3: if it happened, I'm going to need you to be able, like,
- 6:08Speaker 3: it feels like something, like, fundamental about being a person
- 6:13Speaker 3: is you have to be able to do that.
- 6:14Speaker 2: And I never been in, like, it feels like, women
- 6:17Speaker 2: fights involve the hair. It's a strategic thing that I
- 6:21Speaker 2: don't know how to advise for that. Cause I ain't
- 6:22Speaker 2: never been in one.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Well, as David way, it's at that routine, right? Where
- 6:26Speaker 1: you talked about how big fight to look good girls
- 6:29Speaker 1: fight to win. Right. And so he said he fought
- 6:32Speaker 1: this girl and he was in what grade or whatever.
- 6:34Speaker 1: And he was out here doing his Muhammad Ali or whatever.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Do, do, do.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And she came in with the windmill. Oh, and it
- 6:40Speaker 1: was just like, hey, hey, hey, hey, there's nothing to
- 6:42Speaker 1: be done. Now, stakes are way higher with women fight
- 6:46Speaker 1: because also like how women look in the fight is
- 6:49Speaker 1: much less of a discussion. There's much less of an
- 6:51Speaker 1: evaluation of technique by the onlookers and discussions about whether
- 6:55Speaker 1: or not you had done this very often.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I never considered that, but you're right.
- 6:59Speaker 3: You could win a fight as a man, but if
- 7:02Speaker 3: you like kicking and doing some cap cap aware, like.
- 7:05Speaker 2: People that you better do it right. It's like shooting
- 7:08Speaker 2: underhand free throws. I don't care if you 90%. I
- 7:10Speaker 2: ain't shooting them like that. I'd rather lose.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I'd rather shoot 75% than be out here trying to
- 7:17Speaker 3: try to karate kick.
- 7:18Speaker 1: That's right. That, that, that is what gets them. But
- 7:21Speaker 1: I would say something else. Another thing I think was
- 7:23Speaker 1: important about these finals in terms of like generating interest, um,
- 7:27Speaker 1: We had an actual factual star. Yeah. Right? Now, it's
- 7:31Speaker 1: interesting kind of the Victor Wynn-Banyama backlash that has become,
- 7:36Speaker 1: which I really think is in large part a social
- 7:39Speaker 1: media phenomenon because... It's lather, rinse, repeat on how these
- 7:46Speaker 1: things go, right? Like somebody lost, that means they are whack, terrible,
- 7:50Speaker 1: whatever it is, da-da-da, you know, and everything goes. Look,
- 7:53Speaker 1: the Spurs messed up and they built a team that
- 7:55Speaker 1: did not have anybody to be any sort of enforcer.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And so this dude had to go out here and
- 8:00Speaker 1: enforce for himself. And I don't have nearly the problem
- 8:03Speaker 1: with it. But I did not come away from this.
- 8:05Speaker 1: People talk about him like he Rick Mahor coming out
- 8:07Speaker 1: of this series. And I was just like, do you
- 8:09Speaker 1: really think this has been that dirty or has everything
- 8:11Speaker 1: been watered down to a place that this this is
- 8:14Speaker 1: the guy that you think is that dude?
- 8:17Speaker 2: We are on the same damn page, man.
- 8:19Speaker 3: And I I venture to say not only did I
- 8:22Speaker 3: not have a problem with it.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I gotta fuck with it.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I didn't like him pushing Jalen Brunson in the head,
- 8:34Speaker 3: but the way that I saw it was, all right,
- 8:38Speaker 3: I'm going to complain to the refs, which he did.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I'm going to throw my arms up because they was
- 8:41Speaker 3: grabbing him. They was fouling him up. They was doing
- 8:42Speaker 3: all types of stuff to make his life difficult. They
- 8:44Speaker 3: was hacking him anytime he tried to do alley-oop. I'm
- 8:47Speaker 3: going to throw my hands up to the refs. All right,
- 8:48Speaker 3: I'm going to look to see where my power forward
- 8:51Speaker 3: is to take care of this. Okay, I don't got one.
- 8:53Speaker 3: All right, you know what I'm not going to do?
- 8:56Speaker 3: I'm not going to back down. And I know in
- 8:58Speaker 3: the fourth quarter, he stayed away from the paint a
- 8:59Speaker 3: little bit. But, like, I'm going to fight. And this was, like,
- 9:04Speaker 3: one of the conversations we had afterwards where it's like
- 9:06Speaker 3: there's something, and people try to compare it to 2011
- 9:09Speaker 3: LeBron where he kind of, like, receded. And my point was, like,
- 9:15Speaker 3: what I saw was what I liked. Like, it didn't
- 9:17Speaker 3: turn out well. He was exhausted. But what I saw
- 9:20Speaker 3: was a man that was, like.
- 9:22Speaker 2: No, fuck that.
- 9:22Speaker 3: I'm going back in there. Every time I'm a fight,
- 9:25Speaker 3: I'm be sloppy. I'm a miss free throws and turn
- 9:26Speaker 3: the ball over. I may be like fatigued at the
- 9:29Speaker 3: end of the games, but like, At 22 years old,
- 9:32Speaker 3: I came.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Away with this shit kind of impressed by him, and
- 9:34Speaker 2: I know he choked.
- 9:36Speaker 1: But I didn't think he receded. I thought the only
- 9:39Speaker 1: time I felt like it started to feel like choking
- 9:41Speaker 1: was at the end of game five when none of
- 9:43Speaker 1: those guys wanted a shot. And I view choking a
- 9:46Speaker 1: little differently than most people. In individual sports, we treat
- 9:49Speaker 1: it much differently because everybody chokes and there's nowhere to hide.
- 9:53Speaker 1: You've seen Serena Williams choke. You've seen Tiger Woods choke.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Anybody worth a damn at an individual sport, you have watched.
- 10:00Speaker 1: choke because it happens sometimes where your mind comes away
- 10:03Speaker 1: from you, betrays you, whatever it is. It's not that crazy.
- 10:06Speaker 1: We've seen Kobe Bryant airball the free throws. We've seen
- 10:09Speaker 1: like we've seen dudes do a million things in the
- 10:12Speaker 1: course of the moment. He played very well, I thought,
- 10:15Speaker 1: in that series. I don't think that you can look
- 10:17Speaker 1: at the numbers and say he didn't. I said game four.
- 10:20Speaker 1: What gets lost in it is he made two huge
- 10:23Speaker 1: defensive plays at the end. One of them was the
- 10:26Speaker 1: block that set up De'Aaron Fox to, you know, ruin
- 10:29Speaker 1: his reputation in front of everybody. He played great defense
- 10:34Speaker 1: on Jalen Brunson. When Jalen Brunson missed the shot and
- 10:37Speaker 1: then OG came in because De'Aaron Fox did not feel
- 10:41Speaker 1: like boxing anymore. And it's a real, real, real tough
- 10:44Speaker 1: go for De'Aaron Fox. Like, this was, it's amazing. People
- 10:47Speaker 1: are like, they got to trade him.
- 10:48Speaker 2: One, they're not.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Number two, the reason you think they need to trade him,
- 10:52Speaker 1: you think somebody was like, ooh, give me some of that.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that.
- 10:56Speaker 3: You're going to have to staple something on to it
- 10:58Speaker 3: at that point. You can't be giving away these assets
- 11:02Speaker 3: in that way. But yeah, there's obviously fair criticism of
- 11:07Speaker 3: Wimby in this series, but I ultimately thought similar to you.
- 11:11Speaker 3: It's like, yeah, he He played really well, all things considered.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And what it looked like was, and I think sometimes
- 11:18Speaker 3: we fall into these traps where we want to fall in,
- 11:21Speaker 3: or we go with these easy tropes, and I run
- 11:23Speaker 3: the risk of doing this now where it's about age.
- 11:26Speaker 3: But it did feel like every game he came out,
- 11:29Speaker 3: and they started fast. Every game, it just felt like,
- 11:32Speaker 3: a damn wild teenager out there. I was like, I'm
- 11:34Speaker 3: going to beat these motherfuckers right now. Yes. And then
- 11:37Speaker 3: they get to the end of the game and it's like,
- 11:39Speaker 3: you learn that. You watch Jalen Brunson in the course
- 11:41Speaker 3: of this. It's like, all right, he like measured. And
- 11:43Speaker 3: then that first quarter energy that set the tone energy
- 11:47Speaker 3: that Wimby was bringing, Jalen was bringing in the fourth quarter.
- 11:50Speaker 2: So I think that's part of it too.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson became like guy you must respect in this. Look,
- 11:57Speaker 1: he put up 45 in the game with her. And
- 11:59Speaker 1: I think the part that makes it tricky is His,
- 12:02Speaker 1: I'm doing this, he just does it. It's not really
- 12:06Speaker 1: that much fun to watch, right? He does not look
- 12:10Speaker 1: to be an exceptional talent, but as I keep saying,
- 12:12Speaker 1: none of that matters. What matters is to actually get
- 12:15Speaker 1: it done part. That's why when people start getting into, well,
- 12:17Speaker 1: is he the best player in the NBA? I'm like, man,
- 12:19Speaker 1: let's not even do that, right? It doesn't matter. He
- 12:21Speaker 1: just did the thing, but what he is not is
- 12:25Speaker 1: a guy who engenders polarizing opinions, right? There are short
- 12:30Speaker 1: people that love him like family and then regular sized
- 12:34Speaker 1: people who respect him.
- 12:35Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 12:36Speaker 1: Like that's what we wind up having. Victor, however, we
- 12:40Speaker 1: got that kind of star now where people came out
- 12:43Speaker 1: of that with strong opinions one way or another. He's
- 12:46Speaker 1: the guy that you have to come see. I think
- 12:50Speaker 1: the villain part was almost inevitable just because the Will
- 12:54Speaker 1: Chamberlain line, nobody roots for Goliath, but I never felt
- 12:57Speaker 1: like Shaq was a person that people disliked for whatever reason.
- 13:00Speaker 1: The reason that I think that Victor gets so polarized,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and if we may be frank, people don't like it
- 13:06Speaker 1: when they look at somebody and look at him and
- 13:08Speaker 1: be like, damn, he might be better than me. I
- 13:11Speaker 1: don't mean better than you at basketball. I mean better
- 13:15Speaker 1: than you at being. I'm curious if you think I'm
- 13:19Speaker 1: tripping on this part, as you and I are both
- 13:21Speaker 1: men of what I would consider to be healthy levels
- 13:25Speaker 1: of confidence. And I don't mean healthy as a euphemism.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I mean, healthy as it is in the dictionary. After
- 13:33Speaker 1: a loss with a guy like him, and it was
- 13:35Speaker 1: the same thing with LeBron in 2011, they don't want
- 13:38Speaker 1: you humbled. They want you humiliated. They want you up
- 13:44Speaker 1: there looking defeated. looking like you're ready to cry about it,
- 13:48Speaker 1: everything else. And that's not what they got from him. Like,
- 13:51Speaker 1: I saw people calling him a sore loser. I didn't
- 13:53Speaker 1: say that at all. He was like, look, man, they
- 13:55Speaker 1: beat us at the margins. Like, Jalen Brunson, he is relentless.
- 13:58Speaker 1: He never stops. Like, I saw the credit go in
- 14:01Speaker 1: that direction. And then I realized, oh. Y'all just want
- 14:06Speaker 1: this man to look battered. And he's not going to
- 14:09Speaker 1: give you that. He about to go up in the mountains,
- 14:12Speaker 1: do some goddamn Tai Chi or something else like that.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Who knows what he's going to come back and look at.
- 14:17Speaker 1: But he almost got too much perspective. Like people, people
- 14:21Speaker 1: don't want somebody that knows how to handle adversity in
- 14:24Speaker 1: a positive way. They want somebody who cry when they
- 14:27Speaker 1: read tweets.
- 14:28Speaker 2: And he's like, I don't read your tweets. What are
- 14:31Speaker 2: you talking about?
- 14:33Speaker 3: It is amazing for somebody that age. Like, imagine, you
- 14:37Speaker 3: could use athletes or an average 22-year-old.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Like, it's clear. He said, what he did.
- 14:43Speaker 3: It's just so funny because after they won that series,
- 14:46Speaker 3: he was like, championships are all that matters to me. Like,
- 14:49Speaker 3: this is the reason why I'm on this earth. And
- 14:51Speaker 3: he gives everybody the stuff that they want. And it's like,
- 14:54Speaker 3: he's not giving it to you because he knows you
- 14:57Speaker 3: want it, which I think a lot of athletes... are
- 15:00Speaker 3: giving you the thing that they think that you want.
- 15:02Speaker 3: And we like call it quarterback speak sometimes where they
- 15:04Speaker 3: just say, and like athletes are doing that. And there
- 15:07Speaker 3: was a time decades ago when we thought it was
- 15:11Speaker 3: genuine and maybe it was genuine. The hard thing now
- 15:14Speaker 3: is Victor seems to be the type of superstar that
- 15:18Speaker 3: is more talented than just about anybody we've ever seen.
- 15:21Speaker 3: And also gives us the genuine feedback. It doesn't sugarcoat it.
- 15:25Speaker 3: It doesn't play this game that he expects us to play. LeBron,
- 15:29Speaker 3: even though you pointed at time when he's like, I
- 15:31Speaker 3: got money, y'all don't, essentially.
- 15:32Speaker 1: They're great. He did not say that. That's what people heard.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Right, right. I know, I know, I know. But that's
- 15:38Speaker 2: the point. He said, you got to go back to
- 15:39Speaker 2: your life. Well, people were like, ugh, that sounds terrible. Yeah,
- 15:45Speaker 2: that's fine. I was like, my life's pretty good, LeBron.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Good luck next year, buddy.
- 15:48Speaker 3: It's how I felt. But I understand why people would
- 15:52Speaker 3: take it the other way. But I think that LeBron is...
- 15:56Speaker 3: been like super measured in the way that he talks
- 15:58Speaker 3: and saying the things you want to say. Victor hasn't
- 16:00Speaker 3: been that. And up until now, the things that he
- 16:02Speaker 3: said are the things that we wanted to hear.
- 16:03Speaker 2: And they were true.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Now he's behaving in a way that some people don't
- 16:06Speaker 3: want to hear it. Like the whole handshake gate, like
- 16:09Speaker 3: all this stuff to me feels like we have constructed
- 16:12Speaker 3: this factory that is meant to make a certain thing.
- 16:16Speaker 3: And no matter what we put in it, we go
- 16:18Speaker 3: put what's going to come out is this same kind
- 16:21Speaker 3: of track record that we do with these players where
- 16:23Speaker 3: it's like, all right, you're going to be the best.
- 16:25Speaker 3: You can't get over the hump.
- 16:27Speaker 2: You are a villain. And then we're going to.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Watch him come back up three, four, five years from now.
- 16:31Speaker 3: We're going to be all singing Victor's praises.
- 16:33Speaker 1: And give ourselves credit for it. Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Right?
- 16:39Speaker 1: Like, yeah, you know, we gave that boy a little
- 16:41Speaker 1: something to get over. I'll say this. Anthony Edwards completely
- 16:46Speaker 1: changed the way I look at the handshake at the
- 16:49Speaker 1: end of a series. And for those who didn't see it,
- 16:51Speaker 1: you know, Edwards gave the handshake during the game. And
- 16:55Speaker 1: everybody was like, oh, man, you quitting. They was taking
- 16:58Speaker 1: him out the game. The quitting had already taken place.
- 17:03Speaker 1: That was a post-quit move as opposed to a pre-quit move.
- 17:07Speaker 1: But what he said, I saw some clip where he's
- 17:10Speaker 1: hanging around the crib with his partners. And what he
- 17:12Speaker 1: said was, he was like, look, man, the end of
- 17:14Speaker 1: the series, everybody jumping up and down and all of
- 17:17Speaker 1: this stuff. He's like, man, ain't nobody got no time
- 17:20Speaker 1: to be out here doing all this. Then I got in,
- 17:22Speaker 1: I did it when the time was, gave them the
- 17:24Speaker 1: respect they deserve. And then I rolled out. The Knicks
- 17:28Speaker 1: about to be jumping up and down and doing all.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Of this stuff. Oh man, y'all got it.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Maybe I'll holler at you later. But right now, like
- 17:35Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson went over there to dap him up. That
- 17:38Speaker 1: was very nice of him, right? But I don't think
- 17:40Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson's feelings were hurt. that the dude walked away.
- 17:43Speaker 1: We just need something. Like we got to feed the
- 17:46Speaker 1: beast of the machine.
- 17:48Speaker 2: That's exactly what I, I mean, that's the way I
- 17:50Speaker 2: felt about it. And like, I don't know.
- 17:52Speaker 3: It's funny because I want to say that it's not,
- 17:54Speaker 3: it's an, it's a non-issue. These things are non-issues, but
- 17:57Speaker 3: I do think that we can turn things that are
- 17:59Speaker 3: non-issues into like issues because we talk about it. And like,
- 18:03Speaker 3: we have to talk, the series ended and something unique happened.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Anthony Edwards goes and shakes their hands before the game
- 18:09Speaker 3: is over. People actually had a problem with that. Had
- 18:12Speaker 3: he not shaken their hand. So it's like, there is
- 18:15Speaker 3: a 10 minute period. That is the perfect time to
- 18:18Speaker 3: shake their hand.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Like they, I.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Don't remember what they were down, but they were down
- 18:22Speaker 3: by enough. They were losing by a zillion points. His
- 18:24Speaker 3: coach was like, nah, everybody sit down. Hey, guys are
- 18:28Speaker 3: into the bench. Who I call by their number, not
- 18:31Speaker 3: their name. Go ahead in there.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Like, yeah, I'm going to go. Yeah.
- 18:35Speaker 3: And it's like, no, you can't do that. You also
- 18:37Speaker 3: can't do it back in the back of the locker room.
- 18:39Speaker 3: You got to do it where we can see it
- 18:41Speaker 3: right after. It just feels like you're making it up.
- 18:43Speaker 3: And then the stuff with Victor is, I don't know.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Of course, you're raising kids to play sports. You're like, yeah,
- 18:49Speaker 3: be a good sport. Shake hands afterwards. But we had
- 18:53Speaker 3: a game. It was two years ago. My son was
- 18:55Speaker 3: talking trash. Got into it with a couple of guys.
- 18:58Speaker 3: They like pushing each other on the field.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Don't go over there and shake his hand because you're
- 19:02Speaker 2: not calm.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Yeah. Cause I don't, I don't, I don't want to
- 19:05Speaker 3: do that. Like we, when you feel, if you feel
- 19:08Speaker 3: up to it, go shake his head. Don't put yourself
- 19:10Speaker 3: in that situation. And maybe that's how victims think. Now
- 19:12Speaker 3: I do think there's something to the idea of a
- 19:15Speaker 3: get your snap, snap.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Out of it.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Handle this right. Like, I think there's a lesson in
- 19:21Speaker 1: you don't feel like you doing things you don't feel like, right.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I do think that there is a lesson in that.
- 19:26Speaker 1: I also think that at the NBA point, we're kind
- 19:29Speaker 1: of past the lesson teaching point in some ways. Like
- 19:32Speaker 1: I think, I just think there's a different set of
- 19:33Speaker 1: circumstances that you deal with. Because the other part too,
- 19:37Speaker 1: when you shake hands in youth games, you make everybody
- 19:39Speaker 1: get in line. It is a group endeavor. In the
- 19:41Speaker 1: other stuff, it is like, all right, everybody kind of
- 19:44Speaker 1: get in where you fit in and get it going.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I want to ask you this about the Knicks too.
- 19:48Speaker 1: People say, I've had people tell me they don't think
- 19:50Speaker 1: I'm giving the Knicks enough credit. And I just don't
- 19:51Speaker 1: know how much credit you think I'm supposed to give
- 19:53Speaker 1: the Knicks. Like, I feel like I've given the Knicks
- 19:55Speaker 1: quite a lot of credit in the run of this, right?
- 19:58Speaker 1: I mean, I listened to the show. It seemed like
- 19:59Speaker 1: you gave him credit. I don't know where you undercutting
- 20:02Speaker 1: the Knicks. They won the championship. It was pretty impressive.
- 20:05Speaker 1: But I thought a couple of things in watching this.
- 20:08Speaker 1: And now we're in the aftermath of it, which I
- 20:09Speaker 1: think is the fun. The analysis of the series has
- 20:11Speaker 1: obviously been done. The biggest winners from a championship. It's
- 20:16Speaker 1: not quite Jalen Brunson, who was already at a certain
- 20:19Speaker 1: legend status where I don't think New York was going
- 20:22Speaker 1: to hold it against Jalen Brunson if they did not
- 20:24Speaker 1: win a championship. Right. They do hold it against Patrick
- 20:27Speaker 1: Ewing in some ways, but I did not think they
- 20:30Speaker 1: were going to hold it against Brunson because it was
- 20:31Speaker 1: such a pleasant surprise, you know, and everything that came
- 20:34Speaker 1: with it. Now, the biggest winners from any championship are
- 20:37Speaker 1: dudes like three through 12 on the bench. Because they
- 20:43Speaker 1: get to be somebody in ways that nobody ever expected.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Mikael Bridges, these people have been calling him soft and
- 20:50Speaker 1: talking about how scared he was of the shots. They
- 20:53Speaker 1: had to take him out in game four for Jose Alvarado. Bro,
- 20:57Speaker 1: I was watching the soccer bowl the other day. It
- 20:59Speaker 1: was the French and Senegal game. They put Bridges on
- 21:01Speaker 1: the screen. He got an ovation from the bar. I
- 21:05Speaker 1: don't even know how many people in the bar was
- 21:06Speaker 1: from America. He got an ovation from the bar. Alvarado,
- 21:10Speaker 1: I said it as soon as that game was over,
- 21:12Speaker 1: Alvarado going to go to that Puerto Rico Day Parade.
- 21:14Speaker 1: He went to the Brooklyn one because he from down there.
- 21:16Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, baby, you the king. All those cats, man,
- 21:19Speaker 1: they living the life.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I can't even imagine. In New York City?
- 21:26Speaker 3: I think that 20 years from now, maybe people won't
- 21:31Speaker 3: recognize Alvarado some of those guys, except for when they're
- 21:35Speaker 3: at the garden and they put them on the screen
- 21:37Speaker 3: and they won't necessarily get the same like appreciation. Of course,
- 21:42Speaker 3: Jalen Brunson is on Jeter status now, where it's like,
- 21:46Speaker 3: no matter what he do for the rest of his,
- 21:48Speaker 3: his life in New York city, he won't pay for nothing. Like,
- 21:51Speaker 3: I don't even know how to put into words how
- 21:54Speaker 3: incredible it's going to be for him forever because 20,
- 21:57Speaker 3: 30 years from now, Jalen Brunson is still going to
- 21:59Speaker 3: be the one guy that brought this city a title.
- 22:02Speaker 1: But there's another level. He be going to the temple.
- 22:13Speaker 1: He got his wife. I saw somewhere somebody in Westchester
- 22:16Speaker 1: was like, yeah, they know him as like, oh, the
- 22:19Speaker 1: dude from Temple. So he bringing worlds together. You know
- 22:23Speaker 1: what I'm saying? He gonna fuck around and have a
- 22:25Speaker 1: hooping ass Lenny Kravitz out here too, right? And then
- 22:28Speaker 1: it's just gonna be a whole nother situation. So yeah, like....
- 22:33Speaker 2: Jalen got it figured out, man. They got it good.
- 22:35Speaker 2: He's living the life.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Look, you know how good it was going to be
- 22:37Speaker 1: for them in New York where after the championship, they
- 22:40Speaker 1: would be like, oh, let's go to Vegas. Oh, let's
- 22:42Speaker 1: go to Miami. They was like, no, let's get back.
- 22:45Speaker 2: To the shack. They ain't waiting on us. To be fair, I.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Don't know how to put this in a way that
- 22:52Speaker 3: don't sound crazy, but I think you'll understand and maybe
- 22:54Speaker 3: you'll disagree.
- 22:56Speaker 2: New York has the best everything.
- 22:59Speaker 1: It's got the best everything.
- 23:00Speaker 2: It's just you can't afford it. Yes.
- 23:03Speaker 3: So, like, Vegas has the greatest parties that you can afford.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Yes. Right? That you can get into. That's the thing.
- 23:13Speaker 2: And people don't know. And I'm not saying you like everybody.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Me.
- 23:17Speaker 2: I'm including me, too.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Like, a couple times I stumbled into one of these
- 23:21Speaker 3: New York parties or somebody told me about it.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I was like, oh, no.
- 23:25Speaker 2: I've lived some good times, had some good fun. Like,
- 23:28Speaker 2: New York in America?
- 23:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:29Speaker 2: New York got the best.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Everything you want, no matter what you think, that you
- 23:35Speaker 3: can get something better somewhere else.
- 23:37Speaker 2: I don't care if it was originated there. Right. It's
- 23:40Speaker 2: better in New York. You just don't know how to
- 23:42Speaker 2: get it.
- 23:43Speaker 3: And so if you are a guy in New York
- 23:45Speaker 3: that can get in all the doors, never, ever leave Manhattan, sir.
- 23:50Speaker 1: It's eight million people who can't wait to see you. Right?
- 23:55Speaker 1: 8 million people who cannot wait to see you. They've
- 23:58Speaker 1: been doing this.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Sorry, let me cut you off. Can I ask you
- 24:01Speaker 3: this question? What do you think his persona and reach
- 24:09Speaker 3: and access is worth? Put his contract aside. Now what
- 24:14Speaker 3: he has access to, if you could sell it, he
- 24:18Speaker 3: could get into.
- 24:20Speaker 2: whatever business deals in New York that he's interested in.
- 24:23Speaker 3: He'd get into every club, every restaurant, get into movies
- 24:27Speaker 3: and TV shows.
- 24:28Speaker 2: I don't even know what the limit is.
- 24:30Speaker 3: If this was for sale, what do you think somebody
- 24:32Speaker 3: would pay to be able to, from now on, be
- 24:35Speaker 3: Jalen Brunson?
- 24:36Speaker 1: There's no room that he cannot get into, right? So
- 24:41Speaker 1: I'll give this, I think I've talked about this before here,
- 24:43Speaker 1: but I'll give this example. I got a buddy of
- 24:45Speaker 1: mine who, and this is a thing that happens kind
- 24:48Speaker 1: of in New York places, people who know people like connectors, right?
- 24:51Speaker 1: There are people who are able to link people. Worldwide
- 24:54Speaker 1: West is a great example of a connector, but that's
- 24:56Speaker 1: a different discussion. And they'll just sometimes put together dinners
- 25:00Speaker 1: with people at the dinners. And so I went to
- 25:03Speaker 1: one of these dinners. I'm sitting across the table from
- 25:06Speaker 1: Ty Ty, Jay-Z's man, right? J.J. Reddick's before he became
- 25:11Speaker 1: the coach. J.J. Reddick in there. I look over. Kevin
- 25:13Speaker 1: Love's over there in this corner. I don't even recognize
- 25:18Speaker 1: half the people. Jimmy Fallon came in in the middle
- 25:20Speaker 1: of the meal, right? My guy Koppelman was there. We
- 25:23Speaker 1: were there. And this one guy walks in and they're like, oh,
- 25:28Speaker 1: it's DJ D. Saul. I'm like, what are you talking about?
- 25:30Speaker 1: That white man don't look like no DJ. This is
- 25:32Speaker 1: a balding white man in a polo and khakis. Dominique
- 25:36Speaker 1: know who I'm talking about. Man's name is David Solomon.
- 25:39Speaker 1: He's the CEO of Goldman Sachs. I'm talking to this
- 25:42Speaker 1: other dude and I ask him what he does. And
- 25:44Speaker 1: he's like, takes a pause and he goes, well, I
- 25:47Speaker 1: started Chipotle. OK, and I'm watching as like some political
- 25:52Speaker 1: deal was made around like with Chipotle sending stuff somewhere
- 25:56Speaker 1: like I'm watching all these things that are happening in
- 25:58Speaker 1: this room. And all I'm saying is I got in
- 26:00Speaker 1: that room, which means that there's another room that I
- 26:04Speaker 1: have no chance of getting into. And there is no
- 26:09Speaker 1: such thing as a room that Jalen Brunson. cannot get into.
- 26:14Speaker 1: And there's so much money in the city. We did
- 26:16Speaker 1: an interview with Tracy Morgan for Game Theory. And it's
- 26:19Speaker 1: always interesting to hear New Yorkers talk about New York,
- 26:22Speaker 1: especially like guys who grew up poor. And I say
- 26:25Speaker 1: that specifically with him because he was like, no, man,
- 26:28Speaker 1: you go, you point right down there. He's pointing is
- 26:31Speaker 1: like all the money in the world is right down there.
- 26:34Speaker 1: You just got to figure out how to go get it.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Like that's the thing about the proximity of New York
- 26:39Speaker 1: to catch it here. It's just like everything is accessible.
- 26:41Speaker 1: And it's like, if I can just figure out how
- 26:44Speaker 1: to get there, I can get a hold of all
- 26:46Speaker 1: of it. Jalen Brunson ain't got to figure out shit.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Forget the rooms.
- 26:51Speaker 3: I just realized that just about anybody, he could say,
- 26:57Speaker 3: come to me today and they'd be thrilled.
- 27:01Speaker 2: They will post a picture.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:04Speaker 2: That man could get in on any IPO he want
- 27:06Speaker 2: right now.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:08Speaker 2: He's just like, hey, let me get a piece of that.
- 27:10Speaker 1: He ain't even got to give him no money.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Let me get a piece of that. Put my name
- 27:13Speaker 2: on that.
- 27:14Speaker 1: No, that's the thing about these famous cats with these
- 27:16Speaker 1: IPOs or whatever. They just go in and they get
- 27:18Speaker 1: associated with it and go talk to a couple of people.
- 27:23Speaker 3: There's a business here where somebody be like, hey, if
- 27:26Speaker 3: you came into some immediate celebrity like this, we're going
- 27:30Speaker 3: to help you flip this. Jalen Brunson could not have
- 27:34Speaker 3: anticipated this. He can't even be prepared because there's a
- 27:37Speaker 3: period of time where he got the golden ticket. It's
- 27:40Speaker 3: a long period, but he got the golden ticket. He
- 27:43Speaker 3: can flip that into so many different things if he
- 27:45Speaker 3: just was ready for it.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Look, There's nothing he could do to mess this up.
- 27:48Speaker 1: And coming up next, I'm going to tell you how
- 27:50Speaker 1: I know there's nothing he could do to mess this
- 27:52Speaker 1: up because I'm going to tell you who's actually been
- 27:54Speaker 1: the biggest winner in all of this. And it's not
- 27:55Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson. New York, the wait is over. The Knicks

- 32:52Speaker 1: All right, we are back with Dominique Foxworth. I just
- 32:57Speaker 1: said that there's been a bigger winner in this than
- 32:58Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson. And when I say the answer, it's going
- 33:01Speaker 1: to seem so obvious, but there's no question who the
- 33:03Speaker 1: biggest winner is.
- 33:04Speaker 2: It's Jim Dolan.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Jim Dolan, like I said, Jalen Brunson has moved up
- 33:10Speaker 1: a tick from where he was already, right? Like he
- 33:12Speaker 1: was going to be New York Knicks legend and that
- 33:14Speaker 1: was going to do a lot of stuff. When the
- 33:17Speaker 1: Knicks won the championship and the owner always gets to
- 33:21Speaker 1: hold the trophy first, right? Which I know bothers a
- 33:24Speaker 1: lot of people, but I get it. You know what
- 33:29Speaker 1: I mean?
- 33:30Speaker 2: I get it.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Dolan has got on that orange spoke sport coat And
- 33:36Speaker 1: he looked so happy to be there because Dolan's biggest
- 33:44Speaker 1: problem as owner of the Knicks in terms of the
- 33:46Speaker 1: on-court product is that he's a Knicks fan. He acts
- 33:50Speaker 1: like a Knicks fan. He does Knicks fan things, right?
- 33:54Speaker 1: But when he grabbed that trophy and was like, and
- 33:57Speaker 1: to the fans of New York, I'm sorry it took
- 33:59Speaker 1: so long, but it won't, you know, we'll do it again.
- 34:02Speaker 1: But as I watched him, I was like, He is
- 34:04Speaker 1: just as happy as every other Knicks fan. I've never
- 34:07Speaker 1: seen an owner look happier, like as though he was
- 34:10Speaker 1: part of it. But Dolan made some moves. I think
- 34:13Speaker 1: Dolan deserves a little more credit for this team than
- 34:15Speaker 1: people want to give him credit for. But he looked
- 34:18Speaker 1: so happy in that moment. It was the first time
- 34:21Speaker 1: I had ever considered that Jim Dolan was a human being.
- 34:24Speaker 1: And then after that, they started sending around that video
- 34:27Speaker 1: of him giving the sacrifice speech that I thought was
- 34:30Speaker 1: pretty mediocre. And it's definitely not some shit I want
- 34:33Speaker 1: to hear from Jim Dolan. But people were like, wow,
- 34:36Speaker 1: that was a really good speech. Like he did the thing.
- 34:40Speaker 1: He he did the thing. He made bold moves along
- 34:44Speaker 1: the way to do the thing. you say everything you
- 34:46Speaker 1: want about the CAA association that the Knicks have as
- 34:49Speaker 1: a franchise and Dolan, but he hired that CAA guy
- 34:52Speaker 1: who brought in the, he brought in his client's kid.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Who's represented by the general manager. It's really weird. What's
- 35:00Speaker 1: going on with all of that. But the bottom line
- 35:02Speaker 1: is all that Dolan stuff kind of came together and
- 35:05Speaker 1: they won a championship.
- 35:08Speaker 3: It is a reminder that in several cases, the ends
- 35:13Speaker 3: justify the means.
- 35:14Speaker 2: And, And we.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Will create whatever mythology we want around you if you
- 35:22Speaker 3: did the thing that we want you to do. If
- 35:24Speaker 3: our last memory of you is you did the most amazing,
- 35:27Speaker 3: exceptional thing, then we'll cook up all this other stuff
- 35:30Speaker 3: and start to pretend like your sacrifice speech was fire.
- 35:34Speaker 3: And all these other things. I'm not someone who... Obviously,
- 35:38Speaker 3: nothing is always absolute. And the ends just by the
- 35:41Speaker 3: means is not something that I stand by. But it
- 35:43Speaker 3: is a reminder that If Michael Jordan never won the
- 35:46Speaker 3: title and he act the way he act, we'd.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Be like, that monster.
- 35:51Speaker 3: If you get them goals, then people are like, oh,
- 35:54Speaker 3: he's a fierce competitor.
- 35:56Speaker 2: We figure it out.
- 35:57Speaker 1: But I will say this also for Dolan. It was
- 36:00Speaker 1: another moment where he looked really human. When he got
- 36:02Speaker 1: to the end of that speech, there was kind of
- 36:04Speaker 1: a look on his face. And I think what dawned
- 36:06Speaker 1: on me was, He really did truly believe last year
- 36:10Speaker 1: they had a team that was good enough to win
- 36:12Speaker 1: a championship. And he looked at those guys this year
- 36:15Speaker 1: in a way that the rest of us did not.
- 36:17Speaker 1: And he really, truly believed this is the chance I've
- 36:21Speaker 1: been waiting on for all these years in owning the team.
- 36:25Speaker 1: And then it happened. Like, can you imagine what a
- 36:28Speaker 1: good mood Jim Dolan has been in for the last
- 36:31Speaker 1: like six, seven weeks? Like, when they were out here
- 36:35Speaker 1: winning elimination games by 60 points? Yeah.
- 36:38Speaker 3: I don't know if he was in a good mood, though.
- 36:40Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think he was in a bad mood.
- 36:41Speaker 3: He was in a fine mood. But I feel like that's, like,
- 36:43Speaker 3: just pressure building on him. Like, I don't know that
- 36:46Speaker 3: he was enjoying it or relieved until just now.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Because he's still a Knicks fan.
- 36:49Speaker 3: Yeah, he's just like, you know this is going to
- 36:51Speaker 3: go wrong at some point. And I think it's interesting
- 36:54Speaker 3: that you said it reminds us that he's a human
- 36:56Speaker 3: being because I think that's a good point. It's like,
- 36:57Speaker 3: and I've been toying around with this idea about, like,
- 36:59Speaker 3: how these people are characters to us a little bit.
- 37:02Speaker 3: It's like, Yes, because we don't really hold in our
- 37:06Speaker 3: head space for these like public people, especially in these
- 37:09Speaker 3: like major dramas to be multiple different things.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Like Jim Dolan was the villain.
- 37:13Speaker 1: That's it.
- 37:14Speaker 2: That's all he was. He's the villain.
- 37:15Speaker 3: They win the championship. Now he had this like resurrection story.
- 37:19Speaker 3: And I think the same is true for a lot
- 37:21Speaker 3: of the characters in this. It's like and that's the
- 37:24Speaker 3: same thing with Wimby. It's like you can't people can't
- 37:26Speaker 3: really hold in their head to multiple things like, oh,
- 37:29Speaker 3: he was a hero.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Now he's a villain.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Right. Now, I will say, the worst adult is still there.
- 37:33Speaker 1: The facial recognition stuff.
- 37:34Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 37:34Speaker 2: That's still there.
- 37:35Speaker 1: The way they deal with media. All the other adult
- 37:37Speaker 1: stuff is there.
- 37:38Speaker 2: And you know what?
- 37:39Speaker 1: Who's to say? He might flip up his whole steez. Like,
- 37:43Speaker 1: trying to figure out the most delicate, politically correct way
- 37:49Speaker 1: to put this. But you ever met somebody and all
- 37:54Speaker 1: they needed was somebody?
- 37:57Speaker 2: Yep.
- 37:58Speaker 1: And then they get somebody. Yep. And then Everything changes.
- 38:02Speaker 1: True story. I'll never forget this. I have a buddy
- 38:06Speaker 1: who has a poor relationship with one of his siblings.
- 38:13Speaker 1: And I witnessed it with my own eyes, right? It
- 38:17Speaker 1: was not to heat. Relatable content for me. And I
- 38:20Speaker 1: watched it and he and I talked about this and
- 38:23Speaker 1: he was talking about how he always felt like his
- 38:25Speaker 1: mom gave the sibling a little bit too much slack, right?
- 38:31Speaker 1: And again, relatable content understood what he was talking about,
- 38:34Speaker 1: but that sibling had had a very big change in
- 38:38Speaker 1: their life. And the mom kept saying, you know, now
- 38:41Speaker 1: that that's happened, I think everything is different.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:45Speaker 1: And my man was like, really not trying to hear it.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 38:48Speaker 1: All of that. I went and talked to the sibling
- 38:53Speaker 1: and I talked to the sibling for 90 seconds. And
- 38:57Speaker 1: I came back to my friend and was like, Hey,
- 39:00Speaker 1: We're going to talk about this more later, but your
- 39:02Speaker 1: mother is a hundred percent correct. Everything is different. And
- 39:07Speaker 1: it was, it was a, it was a big thing
- 39:08Speaker 1: on that side.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:10Speaker 1: But we really was like, there is an ease that
- 39:13Speaker 1: has been created by this circumstance. Like everything is different.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Who knows, man, Jim Dota might come around here and
- 39:19Speaker 1: turn into daddy war bus.
- 39:20Speaker 3: I mean, I think people say that often about like
- 39:23Speaker 3: women after they have a, child. Well, maybe not often,
- 39:26Speaker 3: but I've heard it. Women in my life, they had children.
- 39:28Speaker 3: It's like, oh, you're just like, you're just different now.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Especially if it's been difficult. Yeah.
- 39:33Speaker 3: And then you're just like, it changes. And I think
- 39:36Speaker 3: that is Jim Dolan probably feels like that. There might
- 39:40Speaker 3: be an opening for him to be less of the
- 39:43Speaker 3: way that he is. And maybe he'll just experience this.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Love and like it. Like, I don't know what drives
- 39:47Speaker 2: him at this point.
- 39:48Speaker 3: Maybe it's just going to be to just be happy
- 39:50Speaker 3: and enjoy his Knicks championship.
- 39:53Speaker 2: We can pray.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Never mind that a prevailing theory that makes a lot
- 39:57Speaker 1: of sense is part of why this has gone so
- 39:58Speaker 1: well for the Knicks is that Dolan was a little
- 40:00Speaker 1: bit too caught up with the sphere.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Yep. Hands off, man.
- 40:04Speaker 1: You got to say, man, the sphere, for Dolan to
- 40:06Speaker 1: be an apparent moron, the sphere seems like a great
- 40:09Speaker 1: idea that I want to go check out at some point.
- 40:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been wanting to check it out, too, and
- 40:14Speaker 3: people around me are like, you got to go see it.
- 40:16Speaker 3: And I look at the rundown, and it's like, They
- 40:18Speaker 3: don't want me to come to the sphere. Yeah, they
- 40:22Speaker 3: not having your type of acts. They ain't putting my
- 40:24Speaker 3: kind of acts up there. When they start putting my
- 40:27Speaker 3: kind of acts up there, maybe I go.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Back out there.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I don't want to see a concert at the sphere,
- 40:30Speaker 1: but they have a movie that they run, and I
- 40:34Speaker 1: would rather go see that. I go to concerts for music.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 40:37Speaker 1: You know what I mean? I don't need all them
- 40:38Speaker 1: bells and whistles and distractions.
- 40:41Speaker 2: I just.
- 40:42Speaker 1: But I hear they got like... It's like Super IMAX?
- 40:45Speaker 2: Yeah. All right, cool.
- 40:47Speaker 1: I could.
- 40:48Speaker 2: I can run that.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Maybe I see this right fast. It's going to change
- 40:50Speaker 1: gears a little bit. The soccer bowl is going on.
- 40:55Speaker 1: I imagine the soccer bowl has to be super cracking
- 40:57Speaker 1: in D.C., especially. I bet y'all's Africans is having a
- 41:00Speaker 1: great time.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 41:02Speaker 3: I mean, it's pretty clear. People wear jerseys, so you
- 41:06Speaker 3: can figure out pretty quickly where people are from. But
- 41:08Speaker 3: the fact of the matter is, it don't matter if
- 41:12Speaker 3: you're not.
- 41:13Speaker 2: White, you cheer. It's intense.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Fans of most of the non-white nations. And I don't
- 41:23Speaker 3: know if it's like that everywhere, but it's like, you
- 41:25Speaker 3: assume because somebody got on an Ivory Coast jersey and
- 41:28Speaker 3: they got an accent that they might be from Ivory Coast.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Nah. Don't start guessing. Don't start guessing. They just not white.
- 41:37Speaker 2: That's what it goes.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Well, let me tell you the wild thing that happened
- 41:40Speaker 1: up here in Harlem, USA. So for those of you
- 41:43Speaker 1: who don't know, the Senegalese, they got them a stretch.
- 41:47Speaker 1: 116th Street From Lennox to Frederick Douglass. That is theirs.
- 41:53Speaker 1: The consulate is over there. They be outside all the time.
- 41:57Speaker 1: They got all their restaurants, everything, right? So one of
- 42:01Speaker 1: my buddies hits me and is like, yo, we're going
- 42:03Speaker 1: to go down to 116th and watch the game. Let's go.
- 42:06Speaker 2: I'm like, bet.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Let's go. So we walked down. Brother, NYPD was blocking
- 42:11Speaker 1: off the streets. You had to have a purpose to
- 42:15Speaker 1: go down there and not just like, right. So but
- 42:17Speaker 1: it was funny because one of my buddies, white dude
- 42:20Speaker 1: was going to meet me down there. And he said, hey,
- 42:22Speaker 1: just letting you know, man, they're trying to stop people
- 42:24Speaker 1: coming on the street. He said, I just told him
- 42:27Speaker 1: I was meeting friends and they let me go. But
- 42:28Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure that was because I was white.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 42:31Speaker 1: And so I got down there. I said the same
- 42:33Speaker 1: thing and they let us go. But it wasn't like
- 42:36Speaker 1: it was the streets was full of people. I couldn't
- 42:38Speaker 1: figure out what they were trying to do. So we
- 42:40Speaker 1: went down. But the spot was a little bit too small.
- 42:42Speaker 1: And so we decided, well, we'll go try spot on
- 42:44Speaker 1: the next block. But they wouldn't let us on the
- 42:46Speaker 1: next block. Like we was giving them that same same
- 42:48Speaker 1: sad ass story. We gave them on the other block.
- 42:50Speaker 1: They weren't going for it. You got a reservation. Let
- 42:52Speaker 1: me see if you don't work here or you don't
- 42:54Speaker 1: live here. Like, I don't know what they were afraid
- 42:56Speaker 1: was going to happen. in the Senegalese part of town
- 42:59Speaker 1: during this match. But NYPD, what's up Zoran? Have you
- 43:03Speaker 1: heard about this? NYPD set up the barricades and they
- 43:07Speaker 1: weren't letting people go. And it was really kind of
- 43:09Speaker 1: messed up because not every Senegalese person lives on 116th.
- 43:14Speaker 1: So if they were living on like 118th and they
- 43:16Speaker 1: wanted to pull up, they weren't letting them show up.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Like I didn't understand what it was. So we say, fine,
- 43:22Speaker 1: we go to Harlem Tavern on 116th. Frederick Douglass, and
- 43:26Speaker 1: we watched the match there because that is where the
- 43:28Speaker 1: Senegalese fans wound up going, along with about three or
- 43:33Speaker 1: four French fans who I contend were doing a terrible
- 43:38Speaker 1: job of reading the room. and it was white, you
- 43:42Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? And I don't know if they
- 43:44Speaker 1: was from France. I don't know exactly. I don't know
- 43:47Speaker 1: how they chose this location. Maybe they was tourists, and
- 43:49Speaker 1: they didn't realize exactly what they were in. It was
- 43:52Speaker 1: a fun place to be for the game, man, because
- 43:53Speaker 1: when Senegal did anything, it was cool. But, you know,
- 43:57Speaker 1: the French wound up winning. And I will be honest
- 43:59Speaker 1: with you, when Mbappe hit that goal to put it
- 44:01Speaker 1: up 3-1, that shit felt like running up the score, man. Like,
- 44:04Speaker 1: it ain't even... They ain't even like, it just got
- 44:06Speaker 1: the excitement. Woo. Senegal scored a goal. They had another goal.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Take it away for an offside. Everything was cool. It
- 44:12Speaker 1: was immediate. Mbappe. I don't know what word they got
- 44:15Speaker 1: for people like him in French. You know what I'm saying? But,
- 44:19Speaker 1: cause that, you know, cause that's real weird there. Like
- 44:22Speaker 1: the Senegalese team is a bunch of French dudes. The
- 44:24Speaker 1: French team has a bunch of Senegalese dudes. It's all
- 44:26Speaker 1: over the place. But it was so interesting, cause as
- 44:29Speaker 1: I'm walking out, this dude recognized me and was like,
- 44:32Speaker 1: what team were you rooting for? You know how offended
- 44:34Speaker 1: I was? That he asked me that question? It's France
- 44:38Speaker 1: versus Senegal, and you're asking me who I'm rooting for?
- 44:41Speaker 1: You think I'm rooting for oppression?
- 44:44Speaker 2: You think I'm rooting for the colonizer? Yeah, yeah.
- 44:47Speaker 1: What did you think? Now, when France plays Spain, I lay,
- 44:52Speaker 1: lay blue.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Oh, that was the other funny part. So after the
- 44:57Speaker 1: game was over, it was a woman, and it was
- 44:59Speaker 1: so confusing. She had on a Senegal t-shirt that said,
- 45:05Speaker 1: the lions, I guess, right? Out of nowhere, she just
- 45:09Speaker 1: starts singing. Man, them people at the bar turned around
- 45:16Speaker 1: and looked at her. This one middle-aged woman looked at her.
- 45:19Speaker 1: I ain't never seen daggers shoot at somebody like that.
- 45:23Speaker 1: And then I looked and that woman had a handful
- 45:24Speaker 1: of French flags. She was just trying to get that money, dog.
- 45:30Speaker 2: But she almost got it. Yeah, I don't have I'm
- 45:35Speaker 2: not that person.
- 45:36Speaker 3: I know people when I went to the basketball game
- 45:38Speaker 3: and Spencer Halls was there and by himself and with
- 45:42Speaker 3: Spurs up on. celebrating in the middle of the crowd
- 45:45Speaker 3: every time anything happened early in the game.
- 45:48Speaker 2: I don't got that in me.
- 45:50Speaker 3: If I'm going to a game and I'm rooting for
- 45:53Speaker 3: the other team, I'm going to be chill. I don't
- 45:56Speaker 3: get that impulse to be like, hey, everybody go into
- 45:59Speaker 3: somebody's house.
- 46:00Speaker 2: And act the ass. I don't have that in me.
- 46:02Speaker 2: I don't know the type of people who do, but yeah.
- 46:05Speaker 3: I know this one was selling flags, but those other people,
- 46:08Speaker 3: I'm going to go back and watch in my hotel room.
- 46:10Speaker 1: No, I get the impulse. I get the desire. I
- 46:13Speaker 1: just felt like you as a French man need to understand.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Yeah, this ain't just a game.
- 46:18Speaker 1: The stakes is a little high for this jibber-jabber that
- 46:20Speaker 1: you're doing. I tell you this, though. I don't know
- 46:23Speaker 1: if this happened to your social media feeds, but somebody
- 46:26Speaker 1: on Tuesday decided, yeah, Tuesday, somebody decided you need Cape
- 46:33Speaker 1: Verde content in your life. And it was just pumping
- 46:37Speaker 1: me nonstop videos of Cape Verdean women at soccer matches.
- 46:42Speaker 1: I got all of it, all of it, all of it.
- 46:44Speaker 1: And if I had been in Atlanta and I had
- 46:48Speaker 1: seen that in the morning, I'd have been on StubHub, SeatGeek,
- 46:52Speaker 1: whichever one it was. I'd have caught the martyr down there.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Like we got to say, like around New York, man,
- 46:58Speaker 1: I'm not going to be here for most of it.
- 47:00Speaker 1: It's time to start hitting them spots, man.
- 47:02Speaker 3: That is definitely, I mean, and that's always a World
- 47:04Speaker 3: Cup thing too. No matter who playing, they're going to
- 47:07Speaker 3: find them.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Yeah. They're going to find them. Yeah, I was, I
- 47:11Speaker 2: got that same algorithm.
- 47:12Speaker 3: I think it knows our age and race and sexual preference.
- 47:17Speaker 2: It was like, I got you.
- 47:20Speaker 1: Yo, but like if the soccer match is like when
- 47:23Speaker 1: I don't, it appears to be a different archetype of person.
- 47:29Speaker 1: now we're specifically talking about women here, but different archetype
- 47:31Speaker 1: of people for all the different games. But like, there's
- 47:33Speaker 1: a particular archetype of woman who goes to hockey games.
- 47:36Speaker 1: And buddy, that's a sociological study all by itself, right?
- 47:41Speaker 1: It is the football, it's basketball, it's all of it.
- 47:44Speaker 1: The soccer just seems to be a little bit more fun,
- 47:46Speaker 1: a little more sporty. I went to Columbia, Brazil in
- 47:50Speaker 1: 2014 in Miami. And I think I told you, I
- 47:54Speaker 1: didn't know they made jerseys that small.
- 47:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:59Speaker 3: It's funny because I was talking to one of my
- 48:01Speaker 3: homeboys and we were going to meet up to watch
- 48:04Speaker 3: the USA game. And we're going to meet up at
- 48:08Speaker 3: a bar to watch the first half, at least the
- 48:10Speaker 3: USA game. And he said to me, what kind of
- 48:15Speaker 3: women is going to be there? These beer drinkers. And
- 48:19Speaker 3: I knew exactly what he meant. I was like, yeah,
- 48:22Speaker 3: it's kind of a little low key. Yeah.
- 48:23Speaker 2: It's going to be beer drinking women here.
- 48:25Speaker 3: And it's not going to be like, vodka tequila drinking
- 48:29Speaker 3: and he was like oh yeah I ain't trying to
- 48:30Speaker 3: go there you got to pick a different spot he's
- 48:32Speaker 3: single so he was like yeah I ain't messing because
- 48:34Speaker 3: you said hockey I was like yeah there's beer drinkers.
- 48:38Speaker 1: I will say this though and I could be wrong
- 48:40Speaker 1: but anytime I've seen clips of like the men's national
- 48:43Speaker 1: team going to play in any of these places um
- 48:48Speaker 1: it's looking like a sausage party I don't feel like
- 48:51Speaker 1: American soccer interest has gotten to the point where this
- 48:54Speaker 1: is a place for women to get cute and have
- 48:56Speaker 1: a good time Definitely not.
- 48:59Speaker 2: I could be wrong, but I don't see it. I
- 49:03Speaker 2: don't know.
- 49:03Speaker 3: I mean, I think you probably know you do a
- 49:05Speaker 3: lot of traveling, but the place that it holds in
- 49:08Speaker 3: society and other places is so much more important. And
- 49:11Speaker 3: as much as we love football, I don't even think
- 49:13Speaker 3: for a lot of these soccer nations that our country
- 49:16Speaker 3: loves football as much as as they love soccer and as,
- 49:21Speaker 3: as ingrained as it is in the culture and society.
- 49:23Speaker 2: It's like a thing. It reminds me a little bit.
- 49:26Speaker 3: And again, you can speak better to this than me,
- 49:28Speaker 3: but it reminds me of like Texas high school football.
- 49:31Speaker 3: And like, it's, it's a part, it's like a real,
- 49:34Speaker 3: sector of their lives in a way that sports isn't
- 49:37Speaker 3: for us in America.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Now, this is an amazing time to be in New
- 49:41Speaker 1: York City. I know people are probably tired of hearing
- 49:42Speaker 1: me say that, but the Knicks just won the championship,
- 49:45Speaker 1: and then the World Cup energy is just all over
- 49:48Speaker 1: the place. People hitting me up, one of my buddies
- 49:50Speaker 1: is coming to town for the World Cup. He was like, yo,
- 49:52Speaker 1: Brazil is everywhere. Right?
- 49:55Speaker 2: Like, it is a, like, you.
- 49:57Speaker 1: Go find a neighborhood, you go find a bar, you
- 49:59Speaker 1: go find a spot or whatever it is. It's been
- 50:01Speaker 1: some what we call perfect New York days where that
- 50:03Speaker 1: weather been hitting just right. Like, this is a perfect
- 50:07Speaker 1: confluence of circumstances right now for the entirety of the
- 50:10Speaker 1: sporting world. Because the other thing about the Knicks winning
- 50:12Speaker 1: the championship that is interesting, everybody seems happy for them.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Except for like Celtics fans.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Are they mad? I didn't know. I mean, there's a robbery.
- 50:22Speaker 1: You know, there's a bit of a robbery that we
- 50:24Speaker 1: don't think about because the Knicks been sorry. And quite honestly,
- 50:26Speaker 1: the Celtics have been sorry for a long time, too.
- 50:28Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it's been pretty universal.
- 50:31Speaker 3: This this story, Jalen Brunson fits so perfectly into like
- 50:35Speaker 3: this underdog story. like arc and people have all fallen
- 50:40Speaker 3: in love with that team. When we did the thing
- 50:42Speaker 3: to make it easy to root against them. And it's
- 50:44Speaker 3: New York. Like, yeah, it feels like the whole country
- 50:46Speaker 3: is on board, which is a unusual thing for New York.
- 50:48Speaker 3: And I know you've made the point before about how
- 50:51Speaker 3: it's the only basketball.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Team in Manhattan. Yeah. And that's whatever, but.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Like people like the nets need to just give it up.
- 50:59Speaker 2: Pack it up guys.
- 51:01Speaker 1: But you have to take the nets for what they are.
- 51:05Speaker 1: And yeah, The Nets are an off-Broadway show, and if
- 51:12Speaker 1: you would like to go see a show and you
- 51:14Speaker 1: don't want to pay Broadway prices, then you go see
- 51:18Speaker 1: the Nets. That's what the Clippers always were, especially Staples
- 51:22Speaker 1: Center era Clippers. That's what they were. The Lakers, that
- 51:25Speaker 1: cost a little too much money, but LeBron's in town.
- 51:27Speaker 1: They're playing against the Clippers. Why don't you go pull up?
- 51:30Speaker 2: And, you know, and.
- 51:32Speaker 1: Check out the game like that's that's what the Nets are.
- 51:35Speaker 1: But if they were ever going to get a hold
- 51:37Speaker 1: of like an actual factual.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Fan base, that is a wrap.
- 51:42Speaker 1: Like, how would you if you didn't have a team
- 51:45Speaker 1: and you were like young in New York, how would
- 51:47Speaker 1: you ever decide that you're not going to get on
- 51:49Speaker 1: the Knicks way?
- 51:52Speaker 3: I'm old and not in New York, and I bought
- 51:54Speaker 3: a hat and a t-shirt. I'm a 43-year-old man living
- 51:58Speaker 3: in D.C. I'm on the bandwagon. There's nothing about the
- 52:01Speaker 3: Nets that I'm surprised. I'm done talking about them.
- 52:06Speaker 1: It's just I don't, like, maybe you guys should move.
- 52:10Speaker 1: That's the team people talk about. Maybe they should move
- 52:12Speaker 1: to Nashville. I don't know, but it's not. No, man,
- 52:18Speaker 1: the Knicks were wobbly.
- 52:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Like it was the Nets. The Nets needed to just
- 52:24Speaker 1: mess around and win them championships when they had them boys.
- 52:27Speaker 2: They might.
- 52:27Speaker 3: And I mean, they still wouldn't have taken over for
- 52:30Speaker 3: the Knicks, but they had a chance of being like
- 52:32Speaker 3: a cool, different franchise.
- 52:34Speaker 2: They launched and it just always felt so contrived.
- 52:36Speaker 3: It was like, look, we from Brooklyn. We're going to
- 52:39Speaker 3: wear the Biggie jerseys. Jay-Z is a part owner. We
- 52:41Speaker 3: go buy all these good players and and then not
- 52:44Speaker 3: get nothing done.
- 52:45Speaker 1: You know, maybe just maybe should have stayed their asses
- 52:50Speaker 1: in New Jersey. New Jersey has a distinct identity. New
- 52:54Speaker 1: Jersey is its own place.
- 52:57Speaker 3: It's funny you say that because I feel like I
- 52:59Speaker 3: don't think of New Jersey as its own place. I
- 53:00Speaker 3: know it's a distinct identity, but it feels like New
- 53:03Speaker 3: Jersey is either Philly or New York.
- 53:07Speaker 1: New Jersey is either Philly or New York, except Philly
- 53:11Speaker 1: or New York. are making it very clear to you
- 53:13Speaker 1: that it's New Jersey. I get it.
- 53:16Speaker 2: I know that they don't feel that way.
- 53:18Speaker 3: But for me and the rest of the world and
- 53:21Speaker 3: the people who are in Jersey also, it seems like
- 53:24Speaker 3: they're like, yeah, we real close to New York or
- 53:26Speaker 3: we real close to Philly.
- 53:28Speaker 1: No, there's in the middle New Jersey too.
- 53:32Speaker 2: What you know about middle New Jersey?
- 53:34Speaker 1: That is there.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Exactly. So it ain't.
- 53:38Speaker 3: One of those places went on a dot, as you
- 53:40Speaker 3: would say.
- 53:40Speaker 2: Yes, it is. I'll tell you this, though.
- 53:42Speaker 1: What do I know about Philly, New Jersey? Y'all get
- 53:44Speaker 1: caught slipping.
- 53:47Speaker 2: I feel the same way about New York.
- 53:48Speaker 1: New Jersey.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Philly is different?
- 53:51Speaker 1: Philly, New Jersey. Honestly, I'm just thinking about Camden.
- 53:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:56Speaker 3: I don't spend that much time. I spend a lot
- 53:58Speaker 3: of time in New York. So I spend some time
- 54:00Speaker 3: in the New York part.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Of New Jersey. I don't really.
- 54:04Speaker 3: My daughter is in Philly right now running in track nationals,
- 54:07Speaker 3: but I don't really get much time to the Philly portion.
- 54:10Speaker 2: I have not.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Gone to New Jersey of my own volition. I caught
- 54:17Speaker 1: a flight out of Newark for South by Southwest in 2024.
- 54:21Speaker 1: I think that's the last time. It just don't come up.
- 54:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's there.
- 54:27Speaker 3: Because the people don't live.
- 54:30Speaker 2: In New York.
- 54:30Speaker 1: Yeah, if you don't have a car.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Yeah. New Jersey is just, like.
- 54:35Speaker 1: It's got great views of the city, though. Like, if
- 54:37Speaker 1: you ever go over there, the city look dope.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I see it. But then you come back over
- 54:42Speaker 2: to the city, and the city is actually dope.
- 54:44Speaker 1: It's right here.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Why are you going back for?
- 54:48Speaker 1: What can I say? That is Dominique Fosborough. Check him
- 54:51Speaker 1: out on the Dominique Fosborough Show, available where all five
- 54:53Speaker 1: podcasts are given away for free. My brother, I appreciate you.
