- 1:31Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to gave from one full episode
- 1:33Speaker 1: of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig into
- 1:35Speaker 1: the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about our
- 1:39Speaker 1: brand new episode on Van Halen, the sources we use
- 1:42Speaker 1: for this episode which helped us uncover a crazy story
- 1:45Speaker 1: about how the band partnered with the US Marshals to
- 1:48Speaker 1: bust a bootleg merchandise ring. Also another brand new episode
- 1:52Speaker 1: this week, an exclusive episode on Lane stately of Alison Chains,
- 1:55Speaker 1: available to our All Access members and of course your voicemails,
- 1:59Speaker 1: text DM and more and as always, a whole lot
- 2:01Speaker 1: of Rosie.
- 2:02Speaker 2: All right, disc goes, Let's get into it.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I made my parents buy me a knockoff red stratocaster
- 2:22Speaker 1: from the Sears catalog just so I could hockey tape
- 2:24Speaker 1: the shit out of it. The first riff I ever
- 2:27Speaker 1: attempted to play on guitar was you Really Got Me?
- 2:29Speaker 1: And it wasn't because of the Kinks. First bong hit
- 2:32Speaker 1: I ever took was in the backseat of Richie Hoak's
- 2:34Speaker 1: shipbox with eruption bleeding my ears and blowing my mind.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Eddie van Halen made his guitar in that song sound
- 2:42Speaker 1: like aliens were landing, and his music made me feel
- 2:46Speaker 1: something different, older, dangerous, like a card carrying member of
- 2:50Speaker 1: teenage Wasteland. Eddie van Halen was everywhere during my youth,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and he deserved to be. He was that good, that
- 2:58Speaker 1: inventive mind blowing, a fucking beast whose influence is immeasurable.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I even secretly like those awful Van hagartoons that came later.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I still do, but don't tell anyone. Rest in peace,
- 3:12Speaker 1: Eddie van Hallen. I wrote those words back in October
- 3:15Speaker 1: twenty twenty when Eddie van Halen passed away, and I
- 3:18Speaker 1: went and dug them up this morning before recording this,
- 3:20Speaker 1: to remind myself of what Eddie van Halen has meant
- 3:22Speaker 1: to me, not just as a musician, which I barely
- 3:25Speaker 1: am anymore, but more as a music listener. It's hard
- 3:29Speaker 1: to expect anyone who was not a teenager in the
- 3:33Speaker 1: nineteen seventies, the nineteen eighties, or the nineteen nineties to
- 3:36Speaker 1: understand the actual importance of Eddie Van Halen. Sure you
- 3:42Speaker 1: can imagine that the guy had a thing, that he
- 3:44Speaker 1: was a thing, that he was a guy. Okay, you
- 3:47Speaker 1: can imagine that he even he that he was or
- 3:50Speaker 1: is iconic, that sly smile, that that wacko, like I
- 3:55Speaker 1: mentioned before, hockey tape guitar design, the red strat with
- 3:59Speaker 1: the white stripes may even when you hear him, you
- 4:02Speaker 1: start to understand that his sound was unique and that
- 4:05Speaker 1: he was this unique player in rock and roll. But
- 4:10Speaker 1: to fully understand, I think it's a you had to
- 4:14Speaker 1: be there kind of thing. And I'm not trying to
- 4:15Speaker 1: sound like the old cool dude nothing that those things
- 4:19Speaker 1: can co exist old and cool. Of course they can,
- 4:21Speaker 1: but that's not what I'm trying to do. When we
- 4:23Speaker 1: were kids, we would argue about who the greatest living
- 4:26Speaker 1: guitar player was, and you almost wouldn't even talk about
- 4:29Speaker 1: Eddie Van Hallen in the context of that argument because
- 4:31Speaker 1: it was a conversation ender. It was just known that
- 4:34Speaker 1: he was the best. Sure, you could argue about angs
- 4:37Speaker 1: young Steve I or pick your guitar player whoever else
- 4:41Speaker 1: was gracing the pages of Hipparader that month, but you
- 4:43Speaker 1: couldn't choose Eddie unless you wanted to shut the conversation
- 4:46Speaker 1: down and you know, talk about something else, football or
- 4:49Speaker 1: maybe steer the hang toward a game and spin the
- 4:52Speaker 1: bottle or something. Eddie van Halen was truly the best,
- 4:56Speaker 1: and van Halen, the David Lee Roth version and the
- 4:59Speaker 1: Sammy Hagar were worthy of Eddie's immense talents. They made
- 5:03Speaker 1: great music, and in the here and now, a day
- 5:06Speaker 1: after the release of our Van Halen Disgraceland episode, as
- 5:09Speaker 1: I walk around the world thinking about the band, I
- 5:11Speaker 1: find them to be wildly compelling. Still to this day.
- 5:14Speaker 1: They prompt a lot of fucking questions, all right. The
- 5:17Speaker 1: obvious one was Eddie van Haleen, the greatest rock and
- 5:19Speaker 1: roll guitarist of all time. I put a list of
- 5:22Speaker 1: five five guitar players together up on Instagram yesterday and
- 5:25Speaker 1: it was like throwing bloody chum into a pool of
- 5:28Speaker 1: fucking hammerheads. Everyone has an opinion relative to Eddie's greatness.
- 5:33Speaker 1: The five guitarists I listed were Eddie Hendrix, Jimmy Page,
- 5:38Speaker 1: Eric Clapton, and Stevie Rayvaughn. Now, of course it's a list,
- 5:41Speaker 1: it's subjective. It's just my opinion. Man, Actually it's not
- 5:44Speaker 1: even my opinion. I just wanted five guitarists that I
- 5:46Speaker 1: thought were universally thought of as being the greatest in
- 5:49Speaker 1: rock and roll. Clapton and Stevie Yvaughn wouldn't be on
- 5:52Speaker 1: my list, but that's not the point. Eddie would be
- 5:54Speaker 1: at worse second, and like I said in the post,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I can make an argument as to why he could
- 5:58Speaker 1: be first. People, of course were super passionate about their
- 6:02Speaker 1: five picks, but almost no one doubted the importance and
- 6:06Speaker 1: the placement of Eddie van Halen on the list, and
- 6:08Speaker 1: I can't say the same for any of the others
- 6:10Speaker 1: except for Hendrix. That makes my point Eddie van Halen
- 6:13Speaker 1: totally unique, not just another great guitar player. One of
- 6:17Speaker 1: the greatest, may be the greatest, definitely in the top two.
- 6:21Speaker 1: That's my opinion. Come at me with Jeff Beck. All
- 6:25Speaker 1: you want Eddie van Halen all day, every day over
- 6:29Speaker 1: Jeff Beck just saying so. Driving around yesterday admittedly probably
- 6:35Speaker 1: a little too fast, and listening to Dreams by Sammy
- 6:38Speaker 1: Hagar from the Sammy Hagar version of Van Halen, I
- 6:41Speaker 1: should say, a song that I hated growing up but
- 6:44Speaker 1: have now somehow found space four Nostalgia will do that,
- 6:47Speaker 1: I guess. But anyways, when listening to Dreams and Best
- 6:51Speaker 1: of Both Worlds, I can't believe I'm saying this and
- 6:53Speaker 1: other Hagar tunes. It prompted another question, this one I've
- 6:58Speaker 1: yet to ask, and it's this, is Van Halen the
- 7:00Speaker 1: greatest band ever rebound from the departure of the original singer?
- 7:04Speaker 1: The contenders ACDC? Of course, Black Sabbath Foreigner. I guess
- 7:10Speaker 1: Audio Slave and Velvet Revolver need to be included in
- 7:12Speaker 1: this list, even though they changed the names from Arraging
- 7:15Speaker 1: Against the Machine and Guns n' Roses, and I know
- 7:20Speaker 1: Van Hallen and they prompt this question, and I like that.
- 7:24Speaker 1: But HM better than Dio's version of Black Sabbath. I
- 7:29Speaker 1: don't know, maybe maybe certainly a bigger impact I think
- 7:34Speaker 1: culturally now that I'm thinking about it, But better than
- 7:37Speaker 1: ACDC Brian Johnson's ACDC. Not that I'm saying Brian Johnson's
- 7:40Speaker 1: ACDC was better than Bond Scott's ACDC, because it definitely
- 7:44Speaker 1: was not. But I still think Brian Johnson's ACDC is
- 7:47Speaker 1: better than Sammy Hagar's Van Halen. Now do we dock
- 7:50Speaker 1: Van Halen for the Gary Sharon era. That is the
- 7:53Speaker 1: real question. No, no shade to Gary Sharon. But I mean,
- 7:56Speaker 1: come on, all right. Another question, this one prompted also
- 8:00Speaker 1: while driving around yesterday and listening to Van Halen but
- 8:02Speaker 1: listening to the David Lee Roth era. There are good
- 8:05Speaker 1: cover songs and there are great cover songs. To me,
- 8:08Speaker 1: good cover songs are fine. There are plenty of them,
- 8:11Speaker 1: and sometimes it's just fun to hear a band that
- 8:13Speaker 1: you really like mess with the song with another band
- 8:15Speaker 1: that you really like. Those are good cover songs. Faith
- 8:17Speaker 1: No More covering Warpigs by Black Sabbath, The Beatles covering
- 8:21Speaker 1: Anna by Arthur Alexander, The Supersuckers, and Steve Earle covering
- 8:24Speaker 1: Keith richards Is before They Make Me Run. These are
- 8:27Speaker 1: all perfectly good cover songs. Songs. I love versions, I
- 8:30Speaker 1: love covers I actually seek out to listen to. But
- 8:34Speaker 1: then there are great cover songs. The difference is any
- 8:39Speaker 1: musician can learn someone else's song and learn how to
- 8:42Speaker 1: play it and play it well, even even do it
- 8:44Speaker 1: in their own style. But it takes a special musician
- 8:47Speaker 1: to record someone else's song and make you forget about
- 8:51Speaker 1: the original or to be more kind to record someone
- 8:54Speaker 1: else's song and completely turn it into their own, into
- 8:57Speaker 1: something totally new and unique, something that wouldn't have existed
- 9:01Speaker 1: without their hands being on it. Stevie Rayvaughn's version of
- 9:05Speaker 1: Little Wing by Jimmy Hendricks is a good cover, but
- 9:07Speaker 1: it doesn't take the song anywhere new now Jimmy Hendricks
- 9:11Speaker 1: cover of All Along the Watchtower by Bob Dylan made
- 9:14Speaker 1: Bob Dylan never want to play his song his way again.
- 9:17Speaker 1: He only now plays it Hendrix's way. Okay, that's what
- 9:21Speaker 1: I'm talking about. I love Roy Orbison, and I love
- 9:24Speaker 1: Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman, but Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman doesn't
- 9:28Speaker 1: make me feel like I'm in a deleted scene from
- 9:29Speaker 1: Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman doesn't
- 9:33Speaker 1: make me feel like I want to go pound beers
- 9:34Speaker 1: up at the tracks with my friends from high school.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman doesn't make me want to learn
- 9:38Speaker 1: how to play guitar. Eddie Van Halen's version a Pretty
- 9:42Speaker 1: Woman makes me want to do all those things and more,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and has since the first time I heard it, and
- 9:47Speaker 1: hearing it again yesterday when driving around it walloped me
- 9:50Speaker 1: that guitar playing that sound in tone, the harmonies from
- 9:53Speaker 1: the band, the incredible charisma from David Lee Roth, and
- 9:57Speaker 1: light of the greatest guitar player question we're asking, I
- 9:59Speaker 1: got to ask ask another super obvious question. Is Pretty
- 10:03Speaker 1: Woman the greatest example of a cover being better than
- 10:06Speaker 1: the original?
- 10:07Speaker 2: If not, let me.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Know what is six one seven, nine oh six six
- 10:10Speaker 1: six three eight. And while we're at it, also let
- 10:13Speaker 1: me know who your number one pick for greatest rock
- 10:14Speaker 1: and roll guitar player of all time is? Is it
- 10:17Speaker 1: Eddie Van Halen? Is it Jimmy Hendrix? Is it Gulp? There,
- 10:20Speaker 1: I say, Tom Morello, Jeff Beck, Jack fucking White, It's not.
- 10:24Speaker 2: But I just got to throw it out there.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Someone else let me know six one seven, nine oh
- 10:28Speaker 1: six six six three eight. I'm gonna take a quick
- 10:31Speaker 1: break and I'll be back in the flash to discuss
- 10:33Speaker 1: some of the sources behind this episode. And some dude
- 10:36Speaker 1: with a red baseball cap. All right, let's talk Van
- 11:00Speaker 1: Halen sources. There are two primary books that we use
- 11:03Speaker 1: for this episode. And remember this episode focuses entirely on
- 11:05Speaker 1: the first incarnation of Van Hallen, with Davidlye Roth as
- 11:08Speaker 1: the front man. Will we do a van Hagar episode,
- 11:11Speaker 1: Will we get back into the later David Lee Roth
- 11:13Speaker 1: Reunited days? We got to do it, all right, I'm
- 11:17Speaker 1: just saying it now, even though, like two after parties ago,
- 11:19Speaker 1: I said no more two part episodes, But there's so
- 11:22Speaker 1: much more to this freaking band story that Yeah, at
- 11:26Speaker 1: some point we will do a part two, I'm sure
- 11:28Speaker 1: of it. The first book we used for this episode
- 11:31Speaker 1: is called Running with the Devil, A backstage Pass to
- 11:33Speaker 1: the Wild Times, Loud, Rocking Down and Dirty Truth Beyond
- 11:36Speaker 1: the Making of Van Halen.
- 11:37Speaker 2: This was written by Noel Monk. Okay, this guy.
- 11:39Speaker 1: You might recognize this name if you just listen to
- 11:41Speaker 1: the van Halen episode we released. Noel Monk features prominently
- 11:45Speaker 1: in that episode. He was at the time van Halen's manager.
- 11:48Speaker 1: He was first their tour manager and then he became
- 11:51Speaker 1: their actual manager later on. And this book is jam
- 11:55Speaker 1: packed with not so not so behavior crazy Shit's where
- 11:59Speaker 1: we got all the stuff on van Halen's team going
- 12:01Speaker 1: after merch bootleggers with the help of US marshals, The
- 12:03Speaker 1: story about smashing the Black Sabbath fan over the head
- 12:06Speaker 1: with a beer bottle, the stuff about the Sleezball manager
- 12:09Speaker 1: who taped the pornos and played them for the secretaries
- 12:11Speaker 1: at Warner Brothers. And I must clarify right now that
- 12:13Speaker 1: that was not Noel Monk, who was the manager at
- 12:16Speaker 1: the time, who did that. Okay, it was another guy
- 12:18Speaker 1: that Monk is writing about. And honestly, there were a
- 12:21Speaker 1: lot of people on the payroll with very similar titles
- 12:23Speaker 1: at the time, so it's easy to get confused. There's
- 12:25Speaker 1: also in the history of van Halen, as I'm sure
- 12:28Speaker 1: you know, and I know you know, forgive me, don't
- 12:31Speaker 1: forgive me.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I just got to address this.
- 12:32Speaker 1: There's lots lots of childish rockstar antics in Monk's book
- 12:38Speaker 1: in the past, in van Halen's history, which honestly, you know,
- 12:43Speaker 1: it's become a bit of a cliche. So we didn't
- 12:45Speaker 1: want to make this episode all about guacamole fights and
- 12:48Speaker 1: groupies smeared in ketchup and all that fucking brown eminem bullshit. Okay,
- 12:53Speaker 1: it's there, if you want it, you can get it elsewhere.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Our themes for this episode were a little bit different,
- 12:58Speaker 1: themes of innovation, of protecting those innovations, even if it
- 13:02Speaker 1: means being ruthless in your defense of your innovation. All
- 13:07Speaker 1: that comes from a different book, a book called Eruption,
- 13:10Speaker 1: Conversations with Eddie Van Halen that was written by Brad
- 13:13Speaker 1: Tlinsky and Chris Gil. Talinsky was the editor in chief
- 13:16Speaker 1: at Guitar World magazine. Gill was a regular contributor, and
- 13:19Speaker 1: for years decades even the two of them went up
- 13:22Speaker 1: to Eddie van Halen's fifty one to fifty studio to
- 13:24Speaker 1: hang out and talk. And this book Eruption, stems from
- 13:26Speaker 1: over fifty hours of unreleased interviews that they recorded before
- 13:29Speaker 1: Eddie's death in twenty twenty. It is a great read.
- 13:32Speaker 1: If you're a fan of Van Halen and a fan
- 13:33Speaker 1: of Eddie's playing, if you're into the guitar, you want
- 13:36Speaker 1: to get inside the head of one of the greatest
- 13:37Speaker 1: guitarists to ever do it that I highly recommend. This
- 13:40Speaker 1: also sheds light on why, and this is the key thing,
- 13:43Speaker 1: why Eddie van Halen innovated the way that he did,
- 13:45Speaker 1: not only because he didn't have any money and he
- 13:47Speaker 1: literally had to build the guitar, he had to build
- 13:50Speaker 1: a thing that he wanted from cheap scraps, but because
- 13:52Speaker 1: he was bullied as a kid. Okay, That's something I'm
- 13:55Speaker 1: sure we can all of a certain age relate to.
- 13:58Speaker 1: When we weren't so protected as chill, and we went
- 14:00Speaker 1: out into the neighborhood no matter where we were front,
- 14:02Speaker 1: we ventured beyond those neighborhood boundaries. We got our asses kicked.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Some of us even got our asses kicked in the neighborhood.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Some of us were from other places with hard to
- 14:10Speaker 1: pronounce names, and had hard to pronounce names like Eddie
- 14:12Speaker 1: van Halen, and they were bullied no matter where the
- 14:15Speaker 1: fuck they went. A kid moving from Halland to America,
- 14:17Speaker 1: he was bullied and humiliated in the outside world, and
- 14:20Speaker 1: that drove him inside into his bedroom where he channeled
- 14:24Speaker 1: all of his frustration and complicated feelings into his guitar, playing,
- 14:27Speaker 1: into building his guitar, and his guitar sound fascinating stuff,
- 14:31Speaker 1: and it comes from this book eruption conversations with eddievan Halen.
- 14:34Speaker 1: You're going to want to check that out. I related
- 14:36Speaker 1: to this. I know Zeth who wrote this episode related
- 14:40Speaker 1: to this. This is something I think we can You
- 14:42Speaker 1: know I was driven inside my room all the time
- 14:44Speaker 1: for different reasons, basically because I was a little fuck
- 14:46Speaker 1: up and my mom was grounding me all the time,
- 14:48Speaker 1: but it drove me straight into books, straight into guitar,
- 14:52Speaker 1: straight into music, straight into writing, straight in to figure
- 14:55Speaker 1: out and making who I am today. So this was
- 14:57Speaker 1: very very relatable to me. Not that I'm comparing myself
- 14:59Speaker 1: to van Halen. I am, however, comparing myself somewhat to
- 15:03Speaker 1: his experiences. I'm sure you guys can as well. I
- 15:05Speaker 1: want to know your thoughts on van Halen. Is Eddie
- 15:08Speaker 1: van Halen the greatest guitar player of all time? Like
- 15:10Speaker 1: I asked before, is Pretty Woman the greatest example of
- 15:13Speaker 1: a cover being better exceeding blowing the original.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Out of the water?
- 15:18Speaker 1: And is van Halen the greatest band to recover from
- 15:21Speaker 1: the departure of their lead singer? I don't think so,
- 15:24Speaker 1: but I had to ask six one seven nine oh
- 15:26Speaker 1: six six six three eight voicemail and text to let
- 15:29Speaker 1: me know, just like the nine ozher four with this voicemail.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Good morning, Marcello just goes and Jake Man, the van
- 15:38Speaker 3: Halen episode is this and you broke it right at
- 15:41Speaker 3: the right spot too much the text that I'm driving,
- 15:44Speaker 3: but the U you brought up the end and.
- 15:47Speaker 4: MS, which is hilarious.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Uh, that was on their tour Rider, and they wanted.
- 15:53Speaker 4: To make sure that they actually read the tour Rider, so.
- 15:56Speaker 3: They put in a ridiculous shit like a bowl full
- 15:59Speaker 3: of m and ms with all the brown ones removed.
- 16:03Speaker 2: But yeah, man, you broke get.
- 16:04Speaker 4: In the right place, you know.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Oh who's fo already? Is that that Fammies?
- 16:08Speaker 4: Ah and the page turn Van Hayguard is born?
- 16:12Speaker 3: Good stuff. Man, can't wait for the part two. Can't
- 16:16Speaker 3: wait for Lane Stay and Outs.
- 16:18Speaker 1: And Chames keep it going, keep rolling later you got
- 16:23Speaker 1: it nine oh four. We can't wait for the part
- 16:24Speaker 1: two either. That episode just it just teed up the
- 16:26Speaker 1: part two. We weren't even trying to do that, Frankly,
- 16:29Speaker 1: it just did it. Glad you picked up on that.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Appreciate the call. Drive safe out there? All right, all,
- 16:34Speaker 1: let's check out this voicemail from the seven to seventy three.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Hey, what's up man? I love the show. I just
- 16:40Speaker 4: wanted to put in a word for a show about
- 16:42Speaker 4: hr from Bad Brains arrested constantly. I had tickets to
- 16:47Speaker 4: see him twice and missed both shows because he was
- 16:49Speaker 4: in jail. Recorded Sacred Love from Jail, Alleged rapists, homophobic
- 16:57Speaker 4: aggravated assault, you name it, schizophrenic. I think I think
- 17:02Speaker 4: it would make a great show. Keep doing what you do,
- 17:05Speaker 4: keep on rolling. Love it so much and thanks man.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Seven seven three, Thanks for the show, thanks for the
- 17:10Speaker 1: excuse me, thanks thanks for the voicemail, and thanks for
- 17:12Speaker 1: the episode recommendation. You know, Bad Brains is one of
- 17:15Speaker 1: my favorite bands ever and like top five of all time.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And I know very little about their history. I've read
- 17:24Speaker 1: next to nothing. I've never seen them live. I mean
- 17:27Speaker 1: that's not true. I did see them live like ten
- 17:31Speaker 1: twelve years ago something like that, but it wasn't you know.
- 17:34Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. I've never seen them live,
- 17:37Speaker 1: and I don't know a lot about them. Of course,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I knew about the homophobia, Don't Blow No Bubbles, that
- 17:42Speaker 1: song from with the Quickness from Quickness, excuse me, rapist,
- 17:47Speaker 1: never heard that before. I need to look into that
- 17:49Speaker 1: see if that's true. I think I knew that Sacred
- 17:52Speaker 1: Love was recorded from jail and the schizophrenic thing. Schizophrenia
- 17:58Speaker 1: is new to me. This is all shaping up in
- 18:01Speaker 1: my head to be an episode I want to write,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and I want to write soon, and ZETHLNDI please make

- 18:10Speaker 1: into in a really interesting way. So thank you seven
- 18:13Speaker 1: seven three. I appreciate that. Plus four to six over
- 18:17Speaker 1: in Europe, writes to us Steve McQueen, Hey, listening here
- 18:20Speaker 1: from Sweden. Maybe it's just because I'm European, but I
- 18:22Speaker 1: always felt Steve McQueen was influenced by French actors much
- 18:25Speaker 1: more than his native contemporaries, folks like Eas Montagne, Elaine Delon.
- 18:30Speaker 1: There's some others here. I'm not gonna mention them because
- 18:31Speaker 1: I'm going to fuck up their pronunciation of their names,
- 18:33Speaker 1: and I'm gonna sound like an idiot. But the texterter
- 18:36Speaker 1: goes on to say, beautiful, tough guys who sometimes speak
- 18:38Speaker 1: louder in silence than words. Love the pod, stay cool.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Is Elaine Delon? Is that the guy in French connection?
- 18:46Speaker 1: I think it is. I could be wrong. Text back
- 18:50Speaker 1: and let me know, and you know, give me a
- 18:51Speaker 1: couple movies here plus four six over in Sweden if
- 18:55Speaker 1: you don't mind, text me a couple movies from these
- 18:59Speaker 1: actors you met that are good starting points. Don't give
- 19:01Speaker 1: me a bunch if just you know, just like one each,
- 19:04Speaker 1: like if I want to watch an Elaine de lam movie.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Which one is it?
- 19:08Speaker 1: Maurice Rene movie? Which one is it? Give me some
- 19:11Speaker 1: res I would appreciate that. Uh, Sarah text her is
- 19:14Speaker 1: Sarah here, she says, love the pod, Stay cool, Sarah,
- 19:17Speaker 1: You got it, Sarah, I'll do my best. The nine
- 19:19Speaker 1: one seven rights and the ads on your podcast make

- 19:25Speaker 1: gotta tell you, man, you know, first of all, don't
- 19:28Speaker 1: shoot yourself. Do not do that. That's not gonna be
- 19:31Speaker 1: good for anyone, especially you.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Uh.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Second, there's a solution.

- 20:53Speaker 1: over in the Disgraceland All Access club. Man in the
- 20:58Speaker 1: Box also help get Alice in Chains on the Clash
- 21:01Speaker 1: of the Titans tour during that same year, openly for
- 21:04Speaker 1: Megadeth slayer Anthrax.
- 21:07Speaker 2: But just because Alice and Chains.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Who were Seattle heavy, they were not Anthrax heavy. They
- 21:13Speaker 1: weren't even Megadeth heavy. Dave Mustain Megadeth reminded them of
- 21:17Speaker 1: this factor. The posters he had printed up and tasted
- 21:19Speaker 1: all over the massive arenas that they played in posters
- 21:22Speaker 1: of Alice in Chains for years back, hair teaste, spandex tight,
- 21:27Speaker 1: still spelling their name Alice n Chains.
- 21:30Speaker 2: That's aptostrophe capital.
- 21:32Speaker 1: En getting trolled by fucking Dave Mustange of all people,
- 21:37Speaker 1: that must have stopped, But not as bad as the
- 21:39Speaker 1: physical violence Alice in Chains endured up on that stage,
- 21:43Speaker 1: paized by Slayer fans.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Fans that did not get a shit for Alice in
- 21:47Speaker 2: Chains and or.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Known in They helped them with all manners of subterfuge
- 21:53Speaker 1: spin on them through the mercilessly Wayne Staley, for one,
- 21:57Speaker 1: wasn't just gonna stand there and take it. He started
- 22:00Speaker 1: and all that shit back at the crowd. He didn't,
- 22:02Speaker 1: jumped the barricade and got right in their faces and
- 22:04Speaker 1: spat back at the lane. Staley fought back, fought off
- 22:09Speaker 1: the hordes, did well in the process, stood up for
- 22:12Speaker 1: himself and had the last laugh, or so he thought.
- 22:17Speaker 1: After the show, he and the others were greeted by
- 22:19Speaker 1: a group of Slayer fans waiting outside their tour bus.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Slayer fanatics that is, and fanatics being the operative word.
- 22:26Speaker 1: These dudes were hard. Lane braced himself did oh for
- 22:30Speaker 1: Jerry and the others. No longer protected by the stage,
- 22:34Speaker 1: they were about to endure an extreme ass kicking by
- 22:36Speaker 1: a bunch of pissed off metal heads. Lane and the
- 22:39Speaker 1: boys got closer and the Slayer kids were blocking the
- 22:42Speaker 1: entrance to their bus.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Lane's pulse quickened.
- 22:45Speaker 1: He looked around for some kind of blunt instrument that
- 22:48Speaker 1: he could use if shit went the way he thought
- 22:49Speaker 1: it was going to. And then one of the Slayer
- 22:52Speaker 1: fans gave the Alice and Chains guys ahead nod. Hey,
- 22:56Speaker 1: the kid said, you guys are all right. You didn't
- 22:59Speaker 1: puss out back there. The hardcore Slayer dudes parted and
- 23:04Speaker 1: let Alice in Chains get onto their bus, and then
- 23:07Speaker 1: it was off to the next stop to do it
- 23:09Speaker 1: all over again, to be humiliated, attacked, and ultimately forgiven
- 23:14Speaker 1: a roller coaster of emotions that took its toll on
- 23:16Speaker 1: Maine Staley despite the brave face he put on night
- 23:19Speaker 1: after night, and soon he would need more than just
- 23:23Speaker 1: a brave face and a big voice to keep it
- 23:25Speaker 1: all at bay, a different kind of coping mechanism.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Heroin all Right. That was a clip from our brand
