- 0:07Speaker 3: By the writers of Patriots dot Com from now.
- 0:10Speaker 4: Until you here the New England Patriots.
- 0:12Speaker 2: What the countdown is on?
- 0:15Speaker 1: Welcome to the Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light.
- 0:20Speaker 2: All right, welcome everybody. We're back with another edition of
- 0:23Speaker 2: the Patriots Draft Countdown, presented by bud Light. Easy to Drink,
- 0:26Speaker 2: Easy to enjoy, bud Light, the official beer sponsor of
- 0:28Speaker 2: the New England Patriots. Guys, today we have the quarterback segment,
- 0:32Speaker 2: which is what everybody's been waiting for obviously, But before
- 0:35Speaker 2: we get into that, we're gonna go over some latest news.
- 0:37Speaker 2: We got Chris Cassidy, Evan Zar, Paul Parillo, and guys,
- 0:40Speaker 2: I think the news of the weekend is Michael Pennix.
- 0:43Speaker 2: It is supposed to show up right.
- 0:46Speaker 5: Yeah, today, I think a dinner tonight and then dinner
- 0:49Speaker 5: last night, visit today, which is what they've been doing
- 0:52Speaker 5: with all the quarterbacks. So the first time that they've
- 0:55Speaker 5: shown real interest in Michael Penix. They did meet with
- 0:58Speaker 5: him at the senior role, but they with pretty much
- 1:00Speaker 5: everybody that plays in the senior Bowl down in mobiles.
- 1:03Speaker 5: So this is the first time that I think Elliott
- 1:06Speaker 5: Wolfe and Girod Mayo are going to have a legitimate
- 1:09Speaker 5: time to get to know Michael Pennix a little bit.
- 1:12Speaker 5: And obviously the medicals are going to be big with
- 1:15Speaker 5: him for every team, So getting him here, getting probably
- 1:19Speaker 5: a physical exam by your doctors and your facility, all
- 1:22Speaker 5: those things play a big factor. We can obviously talk
- 1:25Speaker 5: about different scenarios of how they end up with Michael Pennix,
- 1:29Speaker 5: but I think the overall takeaway from me is just
- 1:32Speaker 5: no stone unturned. You know, this is a guy that
- 1:34Speaker 5: deserves a seat at the table and a spot in
- 1:37Speaker 5: the conversation, and I think it would have been a
- 1:39Speaker 5: little bit disappointing if they went the whole process and
- 1:42Speaker 5: essentially just ignored Michael Pennix. Even if it ends up
- 1:45Speaker 5: being Drake may or Jaden or JJ McCarthy at three,
- 1:48Speaker 5: I still like the idea of at least getting to
- 1:50Speaker 5: know some of these guys.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Agreed, Paul, you got a think on this, No, well,
- 1:53Speaker 3: that's four of the quarterbacks though now that they used
- 1:57Speaker 3: official thirty visits on so I agree with that, and
- 2:00Speaker 3: I think that it's one of those deals. If something
- 2:03Speaker 3: out of outside the box comes up, come the April
- 2:07Speaker 3: twenty fifth, and I don't know, maybe Washington takes Drake
- 2:12Speaker 3: May and Drake May was the one. You know, something happens,
- 2:16Speaker 3: you know, along those terms, and somebody comes after you,
- 2:20Speaker 3: you know, with a really overly aggressive bag. You know,
- 2:23Speaker 3: as Mao said, now you have to have some some fallback.
- 2:27Speaker 3: You have to have some intel on the guy who
- 2:30Speaker 3: you might have to get, you know, early in the
- 2:32Speaker 3: second round, or do you want to trade up out
- 2:34Speaker 3: of the early second round into the late first round.
- 2:36Speaker 3: And Michael Pennix would be probably the best candidate for that.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I agree, Yeah, yeah, I was gonna just chime in there.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I mean, I think the Patriots right now are just
- 2:44Speaker 1: testing the waters. I think it's you gotta be able
- 2:47Speaker 1: to see all these guys, especially in any scenario where again,
- 2:52Speaker 1: if there is a trade back situation where the Patriots
- 2:54Speaker 1: do fall back and end up with a quarterback in
- 2:56Speaker 1: the second round, like you have to you have to
- 2:57Speaker 1: look at these guys. It's important to look at these
- 2:59Speaker 1: guys and see what you're going to get from them,
- 3:01Speaker 1: how they're going to be personality wise, and obviously health wise,
- 3:04Speaker 1: So it's all important.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Yeah, there's no doubt that off of the film, Michael
- 3:08Speaker 5: Penix is probably QB four in this draft. I think
- 3:12Speaker 5: his draft here film is better than what JJ McCarthy
- 3:15Speaker 5: did at Michigan last year. And if it wasn't for
- 3:18Speaker 5: the medical situation, who knows how high he could go
- 3:21Speaker 5: in this draft. You know, he's a little bit older
- 3:24Speaker 5: of a prospect. It did take him a while in
- 3:25Speaker 5: college with all the injuries, but there's not a very
- 3:29Speaker 5: you know, very few guys in this draft, I would
- 3:31Speaker 5: say with the pinpoint downfield accuracy, you know, in terms
- 3:35Speaker 5: of the downfield ball, placement on the deep ball is
- 3:38Speaker 5: exceptional on film with Penick. So I still think that
- 3:43Speaker 5: he as much as I feel like a lot of
- 3:45Speaker 5: people have cooled on him, I feel like in some
- 3:47Speaker 5: ways from since you know, the season, in the Michigan game,
- 3:51Speaker 5: obviously in the college football playoff, I think is a
- 3:53Speaker 5: big reason why after the Texas game, this guy was
- 3:56Speaker 5: like everybody's darling, right, Like everybody was all over the place,
- 4:00Speaker 5: you know, talking about Michael Pennix. So I definitely I
- 4:04Speaker 5: think that he's someone that can go early in this draft.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Like if he's if there's a second tier, then the
- 4:10Speaker 2: you know air quote for that, he's probably the top guy,
- 4:12Speaker 2: I think, So, you know, that's a good fallback. But
- 4:15Speaker 2: as I said, guys, this episode is mostly on quarterbacks,
- 4:18Speaker 2: so we're gonna get way more into this. We got
- 4:20Speaker 2: JJ McCarthy talk Jayden Daniels and of course Drake May
- 4:23Speaker 2: So we hope you enjoy this episode and we'll talk
- 4:25Speaker 2: to you later.
- 4:26Speaker 4: All right, we're here with our final positional preview here
- 4:29Speaker 4: in twenty twenty four Patriots Draft countdown, and guys, it's
- 4:32Speaker 4: the quarterback position. It's a huge one for the Patriots.
- 4:34Speaker 4: It's really kind of what we've been talking about all spring.
- 4:36Speaker 4: I don't know if it was good to save this
- 4:37Speaker 4: one to the end because I feel like we're talked
- 4:38Speaker 4: out on this already. But let's just give a nice
- 4:41Speaker 4: broad overview. And Paul, I want to start with you
- 4:43Speaker 4: and Caleb Williams, who you know, exciting, dynamic player and
- 4:47Speaker 4: it seems like a luck he's going.
- 4:48Speaker 2: To go to Chicago. Yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 3: The first time we had this show on I don't know,
- 4:51Speaker 3: November thirteenth, so yeah, I felt like there was a
- 4:55Speaker 3: clear separation between Williams and the rest. Yeah, and it
- 4:58Speaker 3: certainly seems like it's stayed there that way, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 3: in the media. I think it kind of fluctuates with
- 5:04Speaker 3: the off field stuff and the crying and you know,
- 5:07Speaker 3: other factors there. But I just feel like his ability
- 5:10Speaker 3: off platform to make some plays. He's very accurate, obviously
- 5:15Speaker 3: dynamic running as well. He's a little small, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 3: at six ' one ish and he's definitely loose with
- 5:22Speaker 3: the football. So there's no such thing as a perfect
- 5:24Speaker 3: prospect any year, but this year, no one's talking about
- 5:28Speaker 3: Kayleb Williams as sort of that special generational kind of talent.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I don't think he is, but I think he's clearly
- 5:34Speaker 3: QB one as Evan and the.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Kids say, do you think Evan? Do you think he
- 5:37Speaker 4: could be that guy? Though, if he kind of irons
- 5:39Speaker 4: out some of those details.
- 5:40Speaker 5: I would say that his his arm talents generational. I
- 5:44Speaker 5: don't know. I agree with Paul that he's got wartz
- 5:47Speaker 5: to his game, that he's going to have to work
- 5:48Speaker 5: out with ball security and taking too many sacks and
- 5:51Speaker 5: things like that, but his arm talents generational. You know,
- 5:55Speaker 5: he's got that ability, like Paul is saying, off platform
- 5:58Speaker 5: to not just throw the ball down the field, you know,
- 6:01Speaker 5: ten yards, he can throw it sixty yards accurately off platform.
- 6:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:05Speaker 5: He makes some throws on film that are just disgusting,
- 6:08Speaker 5: Like you're just like, come on, really like really, like,
- 6:10Speaker 5: what are you supposed to do about that? So he's
- 6:12Speaker 5: incredibly incredibly talented. I know that his personality is not
- 6:16Speaker 5: for everybody. We're going to leave that to the side.
- 6:19Speaker 5: His football ability is you know, his ability on film
- 6:24Speaker 5: is is exceptional. And I've I've wired a wire, I've
- 6:27Speaker 5: had him one one, I've had him in his own tier,
- 6:30Speaker 5: like he's he's a tier above everybody else in this
- 6:32Speaker 5: class tomy. Is he in the Andrew Luck sphere? Probably not,
- 6:37Speaker 5: but he's right below that sphere. I would say that
- 6:40Speaker 5: maybe we all should have thought of Trevor Lawrence like
- 6:43Speaker 5: a little bit less of that generational type mate, And
- 6:47Speaker 5: I think that Caleb's in a similar category.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Would tis I'm not going to We've covered I feel
- 6:51Speaker 4: like we covered Caleb if you don't need to believe
- 6:53Speaker 4: labor the point. So let's just get right to Drake.
- 6:55Speaker 4: May I mean, I think all of us are will
- 6:57Speaker 4: be very excited if the Patriots were able to land him,
- 7:01Speaker 4: you know, just prototypical size. He's got some athleticism, he's
- 7:04Speaker 4: got some of the off platform stuff, he's got some
- 7:06Speaker 4: creativity to his game. He's just kind of a ratic
- 7:09Speaker 4: at times. But he's still just twenty one years old.
- 7:11Speaker 4: But it seems like he's got all the tools in
- 7:12Speaker 4: the shed.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he carried a bad UNC team last year,
- 7:17Speaker 2: not this past season. Year before. I mean, it really
- 7:19Speaker 2: was Drake May and Kale Williams and even there were
- 7:21Speaker 2: some scenarios where Drake May was going to be the
- 7:23Speaker 2: number one guy. So that's a guy you can come in.
- 7:25Speaker 2: He's young, if you know the offense, say the Patriots,
- 7:27Speaker 2: we're lucky enough to get him at three. We're not
- 7:29Speaker 2: ready for him. You can sit him. He'll just grow
- 7:30Speaker 2: behind Jacobe Burssett. We don't know what's going to happen,
- 7:33Speaker 2: but at this point, I just hope the Commanders don't
- 7:35Speaker 2: take him. So that's all of us.
- 7:37Speaker 4: But you guys, I mean, this is this is the
- 7:38Speaker 4: guy we should probably spend the most time on.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Bright Paul.
- 7:41Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, like him and Daniels. Daniels a little
- 7:44Speaker 3: bit more than you do. But May would be my
- 7:47Speaker 3: pick as well, I just I think think there's a
- 7:49Speaker 3: lot of athleticism there, you know, prototypical size six '
- 7:52Speaker 3: four to twenty five or so. I think he can run.
- 7:56Speaker 3: He's he's been an effective runner. There's inconsistencies, there's no again,
- 8:00Speaker 3: there's no perfect guys. He's loses his accuracy at times.
- 8:04Speaker 3: The mechanics are an issue. I think those things are coachable.
- 8:07Speaker 3: I think he has the things that you can't teach
- 8:10Speaker 3: in terms of the physical tools. I mean, I think
- 8:13Speaker 3: there's a lot to like there.
- 8:14Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a great way to put it. I think
- 8:15Speaker 5: the biggest thing is with Drake May is that this mold,
- 8:20Speaker 5: this archetype is working out more and more in the
- 8:24Speaker 5: league now that they are these private quarterback coaches in
- 8:27Speaker 5: the offseason and there's a little bit more knowledge of
- 8:30Speaker 5: what's important and what's not when it comes to footwork
- 8:33Speaker 5: and things like that. You see so many of these
- 8:35Speaker 5: guys now, and I think that Drake May is right
- 8:39Speaker 5: in the mold of Alan Herbert Jordan Love, like all
- 8:43Speaker 5: those types of players that it'll work itself out more
- 8:47Speaker 5: times than not. Now, you know, maybe twenty years ago
- 8:50Speaker 5: we had trouble with these kinds of players, now it
- 8:52Speaker 5: feels like the developmental track is a lot easier for them.
- 8:55Speaker 5: You look at the high end throws, like the big
- 8:57Speaker 5: time throws down the field. Nobody's made more of them
- 9:00Speaker 5: college football over the last two years than Drake May.
- 9:02Speaker 5: So you see those big time throws, those high level
- 9:05Speaker 5: franchise QB plays, he has those. Just to Paul's point,
- 9:09Speaker 5: he has to be more consistent with the layups. It's
- 9:11Speaker 5: actually the easy throws that he has harder trouble with
- 9:14Speaker 5: than the big time throws. So that's a little bit backwards,
- 9:17Speaker 5: but in a lot of ways, I just kind of
- 9:19Speaker 5: described Josh Allen, you know, coming out of college. So
- 9:22Speaker 5: that's the way that I look at it with Drake
- 9:23Speaker 5: May is that we've we've gotten better of developing that
- 9:28Speaker 5: kind of talent in the league, and I think it
- 9:31Speaker 5: has panned out more times than not recently.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Yeah, we talked him. It's a good transition though to
- 9:35Speaker 4: Jade and Daniels, who you know similar, I mean, has
- 9:37Speaker 4: to kind of develop probably more along the lines of
- 9:39Speaker 4: Lamar Jackson. You know, Paul you mentioned that, you know,
- 9:41Speaker 4: I'm a little bit I'm a little bit more concerned.
- 9:44Speaker 3: There are a few just.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Traits in him that I see that I see coming
- 9:47Speaker 4: and if they don't develop, you know, I be kind
- 9:49Speaker 4: of mad at myself. But you know, why don't you
- 9:52Speaker 4: set up Jade Daniels a little bit?
- 9:53Speaker 3: Yeah. I just think that the the ability to run
- 9:57Speaker 3: is the X factor there, and these guys are all mobile.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Caleb Williams is a terrific runner too. I'm not saying
- 10:02Speaker 3: that Daniels is the only guy, but I do think
- 10:04Speaker 3: that he separates himself a little bit as a runner,
- 10:07Speaker 3: and I think sometimes that can make up for some
- 10:10Speaker 3: of the inefficiencies. He's like everybody else, though, he's going
- 10:13Speaker 3: to have to learn how to do it from the
- 10:15Speaker 3: pocket and you know, get the ball out on time
- 10:17Speaker 3: and being rhythm make his progressions. I think for a
- 10:20Speaker 3: lot of these guys, there was a lot of one
- 10:21Speaker 3: read stuff. Evan would probably speak to that a little
- 10:24Speaker 3: bit more than I would. But there's a lot to
- 10:27Speaker 3: like about Daniels. And you know, I think the fact
- 10:30Speaker 3: that the size of the frame, you know, it's not
- 10:34Speaker 3: that much different than Lamar Jackson, a little smaller. So
- 10:37Speaker 3: I think some people felt like that durability would be
- 10:40Speaker 3: an issue. I was one of them, you know, it
- 10:42Speaker 3: looks like he's, you know, if he can play it
- 10:44Speaker 3: two ten or you know, two fifteen. I think that's
- 10:47Speaker 3: big enough. There's a lot to like there.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I think he's very different stylistically than Lamar. He
- 10:54Speaker 5: runs differently tax different areas of the field as a thrower,
- 10:58Speaker 5: but the way that defenses have to account for his
- 11:01Speaker 5: mobility is very similar to Lamar. So you're gonna get
- 11:04Speaker 5: into a game plan defensively against the Patriots and you
- 11:08Speaker 5: are gonna have to have a coordinated rush plan of
- 11:12Speaker 5: how are we going to contain Jaden Daniels in the pocket,
- 11:16Speaker 5: Because when he gets out of the pocket and runs,
- 11:18Speaker 5: he's a fifty yard touchdown waiting to happen. I mean,
- 11:20Speaker 5: he will turn on the tape against Florida or Alabama
- 11:23Speaker 5: and he is just taking off running for huge chunks,
- 11:26Speaker 5: not just ten yards at a time. Fifty sixty seventy
- 11:30Speaker 5: eighty five yard touchdown against Florida running the football. So
- 11:34Speaker 5: that's a difference making trait that he has as a passer,
- 11:37Speaker 5: though there are has some hesitations with his profile. He
- 11:41Speaker 5: has a lot of overlap as a thrower with Justin
- 11:44Speaker 5: Fields and with Jalen Hurts, so that's the scale that
- 11:46Speaker 5: I have put him on. Jalen Hurts is like, well,
- 11:49Speaker 5: I think what it could be if everything around him
- 11:51Speaker 5: is in the right order. And I think with him,
- 11:53Speaker 5: it's really about having those outside receivers that can win
- 11:56Speaker 5: one on one because he's not somebody that likes to
- 11:59Speaker 5: throw the ball to the middle of the field. He's
- 12:00Speaker 5: not gonna hit the layered, anticipatory rhythm throws between the numbers.
- 12:05Speaker 5: It's not his game. That's where the Justin Fields thing
- 12:08Speaker 5: kind of comes in. There's a lot of sacks on film.
- 12:10Speaker 5: There's a lot of you know, when he gets pressure,
- 12:12Speaker 5: he's gonna get sacked. He's not elusive, overly in the pocket,
- 12:16Speaker 5: and he's not big, so when you hit him, he's
- 12:18Speaker 5: gonna go down. So those are the things that I
- 12:20Speaker 5: think give you concern about Jayden Daniels. Is just that
- 12:24Speaker 5: we look at what just happened with Justin Fields in Chicago.
- 12:28Speaker 5: If you don't give him a good offensive line, and
- 12:30Speaker 5: he really you know, DJ Moore is like the best
- 12:32Speaker 5: receiver he's ever worked with, and it's gonna be a
- 12:35Speaker 5: little bit of a projection of what he can do
- 12:37Speaker 5: as a thrower. But I think He's a much better
- 12:40Speaker 5: natural runner than Justin fields is. So I put him
- 12:43Speaker 5: more in the Lamar category in that What do you
- 12:47Speaker 5: think you got Daniels?
- 12:48Speaker 4: Should we move on to to McCarthy.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Well, what I want to add about Daniels real quick
- 12:52Speaker 2: is that the difference between him and Lamar's Lamar is
- 12:53Speaker 2: a bit better avoiding the hits. I mean, there's some
- 12:56Speaker 2: footage of Jade Daniels getting absolutely planted, and I'm also
- 12:59Speaker 2: worried that he had the way to get as Evan
- 13:00Speaker 2: said Malik neighbors Brian Thomas, I just don't know if
- 13:03Speaker 2: that'd be a great fit for the Pats once again
- 13:04Speaker 2: to something we haven't had before because Cam kind of
- 13:06Speaker 2: didn't have the arm when he was here.
- 13:08Speaker 5: Yeah, Lamar is more creative as a runner too, Like
- 13:11Speaker 5: Lamar is more elusive and more jitterbuggy as a runner,
- 13:15Speaker 5: Jaden Daniels is a shot out of a cannon type
- 13:18Speaker 5: of runner, Like when he sees a gap, he's going
- 13:20Speaker 5: to just explode through it. You know, if you want
- 13:22Speaker 5: to compare him as a runner, I see a lot
- 13:24Speaker 5: of Kaepernick and how he runs the ball. That's it's
- 13:26Speaker 5: a straight line speed. He's not a dancer like Lamar is.
- 13:30Speaker 5: You know, Lamar's got at all. I think that that
- 13:32Speaker 5: still can be really valuable, but it's just a little
- 13:34Speaker 5: bit of a different running style.
- 13:35Speaker 3: All right.
- 13:36Speaker 4: So let's move now to you know, probably the most
- 13:38Speaker 4: polarizing prospect, Jaja McCarthy, who wasn't really even I mean,
- 13:41Speaker 4: I don't feel like he was even polarizing like to
- 13:43Speaker 4: start the process. And then just in the last month
- 13:45Speaker 4: or so, Paul, he's really become the guy that you know,
- 13:48Speaker 4: just everyone has him going all the way up to
- 13:50Speaker 4: three of the Patriots. I mean, does that sound crazy.
- 13:52Speaker 3: We're a couple of weeks out now, and it certainly
- 13:54Speaker 3: seems like I'd be surprised at this point with the
- 13:56Speaker 3: amount of buzz that he's gotten if he doesn't go
- 13:58Speaker 3: in the top ten. So I'm not necessarily sure how
- 14:02Speaker 3: this all happened, but there is a skill set there
- 14:05Speaker 3: that I think is a little underrated. He is polarizing, you, right, Mike,
- 14:07Speaker 3: but I do think he has a good degree of
- 14:10Speaker 3: athleticism in mobility. He's not the runner per se that
- 14:14Speaker 3: the other guys are, but he can move and he's
- 14:17Speaker 3: got a terrific arm. Matter of fact, some people criticize
- 14:20Speaker 3: that it's all fastballs, like he needs to sort of
- 14:23Speaker 3: vary the routine a little bit. But there's to me,
- 14:26Speaker 3: it's that the cliched question. He never had to carry
- 14:30Speaker 3: the team at Michigan, so that's a projection. You don't
- 14:33Speaker 3: know if he can do it.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Yeah, what do you think?
- 14:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I've been pretty critical of the McCarthy stuff.
- 14:38Speaker 5: I think his floor is probably the Minnesota at eleven.
- 14:41Speaker 5: Like if they just waited out and give the mac
- 14:43Speaker 5: jones thing, or you just hope he falls in your
- 14:45Speaker 5: lap at eleven, then maybe you know that ends up
- 14:48Speaker 5: happening there. I think the biggest thing with McCarthy is
- 14:51Speaker 5: that the strains there are that he plays with instructure
- 14:56Speaker 5: of a pro style offense at Michigan. So that's nice
- 14:58Speaker 5: and easily translate to the NFL. Like when he's on
- 15:02Speaker 5: time and he's on the first read, this is what
- 15:04Speaker 5: he's capable of doing. We can see that on film,
- 15:07Speaker 5: even in a small sample size. He's also, to Paul's point,
- 15:10Speaker 5: he's very very quick and agile in the pocket. He's nimble,
- 15:13Speaker 5: he can move around the pocket, he can evade rushers,
- 15:16Speaker 5: he can keep his eyes downfield and throw off of that.
- 15:18Speaker 5: He's not a scrambler, but he's a thrower within that confine.
- 15:22Speaker 5: So he's very good there. He put down a six
- 15:24Speaker 5: point eight two three cone, so you can see the quickness,
- 15:27Speaker 5: like he's got that change of direction ability. I think
- 15:30Speaker 5: the biggest thing with him is just a lack of creativity.
- 15:33Speaker 5: You know, he's an instructure player, and there's just not
- 15:36Speaker 5: a whole lot of times in structure that I see
- 15:39Speaker 5: him really using some of the different quarterback tools to
- 15:43Speaker 5: hit bigger plays down the field, Like let's come off. Yeah,
- 15:46Speaker 5: the first read might be an open six yard completion,
- 15:49Speaker 5: but if I come off the first read the second
- 15:51Speaker 5: reads an eighty yard touchdown. You see him stick on
- 15:53Speaker 5: to the first read a little bit too often. There's
- 15:55Speaker 5: not a lot of pump fakes or manipulation or real
- 15:58Speaker 5: creativity or playmaking to his game. So that's why I've
- 16:01Speaker 5: really consistently compared him to Purty because I feel like
- 16:04Speaker 5: Brock Purdy is one of those guys that, yeah, if
- 16:07Speaker 5: it's all on time and if the guys are getting
- 16:09Speaker 5: open and the scheme is working and all this kind
- 16:11Speaker 5: of stuff, he can be a prolific you know, He's
- 16:13Speaker 5: what runner up for MVP last year. Really efficient guy,
- 16:16Speaker 5: but is he going to be the reason that you
- 16:18Speaker 5: look back and say JJ McCarthy carried us that day,
- 16:22Speaker 5: like he was the reason why we won this game.
- 16:24Speaker 5: I don't see that in the league. And I think
- 16:27Speaker 5: that that's if you're picking at three, your guy has
- 16:30Speaker 5: to have that type of potential. He has to be
- 16:31Speaker 5: able to do that.
- 16:33Speaker 2: I just don't think he's the dynamic player worth the
- 16:36Speaker 2: number three pick. You don't go four and thirteen to
- 16:38Speaker 2: take bo Nix, you don't go for and thirteen to
- 16:39Speaker 2: take JJ McCarthy. It's just it's not the right move.
- 16:42Speaker 2: If you're at eleven, it makes more sense. That's kind
- 16:44Speaker 2: of player you hope falls in your lap. I just
- 16:46Speaker 2: don't think he's worth that high pick.
- 16:48Speaker 4: So let's round out just the big names to talk
- 16:51Speaker 4: to the group. Michael Pennis last you know, last one
- 16:53Speaker 4: obviously had really nice game in the semifinals. Injury history,
- 16:57Speaker 4: big arm down the field.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Paul.
- 16:58Speaker 4: I mean, he's certainly got some trade, but he's a
- 17:00Speaker 4: guy that seems kind of like he's fallen off a
- 17:02Speaker 4: little bit with.
- 17:02Speaker 3: The high quiet. Yeah, and the Patriots really haven't expressed
- 17:06Speaker 3: much interest or haven't had much of their interest publicized
- 17:09Speaker 3: at least around him. So but yeah, terrific passer. I think,
- 17:13Speaker 3: maybe arguably the best passer in the draft, but you
- 17:18Speaker 3: do not get the dynamic elements that most of these
- 17:20Speaker 3: other guys give you.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Yeah, other than May, he's probably the most pinpoint accurate
- 17:25Speaker 5: on the deep ball. You know, him and May are
- 17:27Speaker 5: kind of in that category, and Caleb obviously too, but
- 17:29Speaker 5: I don't really count him because he's going to the Bears.
- 17:32Speaker 5: So you know, between the guys that are going to
- 17:34Speaker 5: be Patriots potentially, I'd say Penix is downfield throws and
- 17:38Speaker 5: just those absolutely perfect, pletely placed passes like the Penix
- 17:43Speaker 5: has that. The issues with Penix, other than the injuries,
- 17:46Speaker 5: of course, which you have to mention, is under pressure.
- 17:49Speaker 5: His accuracy and his velocity on the football dips when
- 17:54Speaker 5: he's got pressure in his face, he's got people at
- 17:56Speaker 5: his feet, things like that. We saw that in the
- 17:58Speaker 5: National Championship game. But it comes up in other pockets
- 18:01Speaker 5: when he was under pressure during the season against better teams,
- 18:04Speaker 5: he like an Oregon or something like that. So that
- 18:07Speaker 5: does happen with him. But if you put the injuries
- 18:11Speaker 5: to the side and you're a team that clears him
- 18:14Speaker 5: medically and feel good about him medically, which some teams
- 18:17Speaker 5: I think do, then you can convince yourself that he's
- 18:21Speaker 5: got that leadership, that it thing that we were talking
- 18:24Speaker 5: about with McCarthy a little bit. He's got good downfield
- 18:27Speaker 5: accuracy for the most part, so you know, you could
- 18:30Speaker 5: talk yourself into Michael Pennix. But based off of what
- 18:33Speaker 5: they've done pre draft, I just think it's risky to
- 18:37Speaker 5: take Penix without doing real homework on him. And maybe
- 18:41Speaker 5: it's all been private and maybe it's all been to
- 18:42Speaker 5: behind closed doors, but to not have him here for
- 18:46Speaker 5: a thirty visit, to not go to his pro day
- 18:48Speaker 5: with the big decision makers and all this kind of stuff,
- 18:51Speaker 5: it's I would I would be a little bit scared. Yeah,
- 18:56Speaker 5: he might be.
- 18:56Speaker 2: It's interesting. You can't ignore the injuries. But I think
- 18:59Speaker 2: the year before he had about third he won thirty
- 19:00Speaker 2: two touchdowns, falls up with thirty six. Kind of crazy.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Think what one game can do. He had the match
- 19:04Speaker 2: a game against Texas doesn't play as well in the final,
- 19:06Speaker 2: so it'd kind of be interesting where he'd be at
- 19:08Speaker 2: if that Texas game was the final game. But it
- 19:10Speaker 2: is risky, but he's one of those players if you
- 19:13Speaker 2: hit it could be good news for the franchise.
- 19:15Speaker 4: So it seems like, I mean some more than others,
- 19:17Speaker 4: but this hopefully the Patriots. One of these guys is
- 19:19Speaker 4: on the Patriots, like hopefully one of those top six.
- 19:21Speaker 4: But as we get down here, and I know Evan
- 19:23Speaker 4: you said before, like, I mean, it's just not a
- 19:24Speaker 4: great class after that kind of top six, and it's
- 19:26Speaker 4: just who kind of intrigues you a little bit. I
- 19:29Speaker 4: just throw out two names that I kind of like.
- 19:31Speaker 4: I mean, Joe Milton. I don't even know if I
- 19:32Speaker 4: like him. I'm just like, I just like watching him
- 19:34Speaker 4: chuck the deep can ignore, you know, and walk away
- 19:35Speaker 4: and just put the finger up.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Might be the best.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's it's fun to watch. And I
- 19:39Speaker 4: look at that as you know, it's a late round
- 19:40Speaker 4: guy where hey, I'm always a fan of drafting quarterbacks,
- 19:43Speaker 4: but you know, giving him a chance, like just to
- 19:45Speaker 4: come into training camp and watch him as like you
- 19:46Speaker 4: almost like JJ Taylor was, where I'm like, oh, he'll
- 19:48Speaker 4: be fun in training camp. He's never going to play
- 19:49Speaker 4: it down a meaningful down for the team, but at
- 19:51Speaker 4: least it'll make kind of make.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Some fun preseason games. And I think Milton would be
- 19:54Speaker 2: interesting in a year like the Kenny Pickett year where
- 19:57Speaker 2: there's not really that consensus. One guy, see what team
- 20:00Speaker 2: takes a reach on him.
- 20:01Speaker 4: He's got I mean, he's got trades. The other one,
- 20:03Speaker 4: I just you know, throw out Jordan Travis from Florida State,
- 20:06Speaker 4: who I know, you know, really undersize coming off a
- 20:08Speaker 4: big injury. But I just wonder. I just think there's
- 20:10Speaker 4: something there.
- 20:10Speaker 2: I just like him.
- 20:11Speaker 4: I like listening to him with the combine, you know,
- 20:13Speaker 4: but again, like this is like we're talking to day
- 20:15Speaker 4: three developmental guy. I don't know, Paul, you got any
- 20:19Speaker 4: comments on those guys or if there's other guys that
- 20:20Speaker 4: you know, just guys.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Are also both a little older, you know it had
- 20:25Speaker 3: a longer career. I think they both were in college
- 20:27Speaker 3: for six years.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Yeah. Travis is almost twenty four years.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Yeah, so he had some time at Louisville before Florida State.
- 20:34Speaker 3: In Milton obviously at Michigan before Tennessee. I don't I
- 20:39Speaker 3: like Travis Moore. Milton has gotten opportunities to play and
- 20:44Speaker 3: not been overly productive. Travis was very productive. He was
- 20:48Speaker 3: very much in the Heisman Trophy running with Daniels this
- 20:51Speaker 3: year before he got suffered that injury. But the size
- 20:55Speaker 3: worries me to me, if you look down here, then
- 20:58Speaker 3: you're gonna roll the dice. It's Rattler, Spencer Rattler, who
- 21:01Speaker 3: I don't love. But the ability, I think the tools
- 21:06Speaker 3: combined with the production in college, I think at a
- 21:08Speaker 3: higher level. If you're going to roll the dice on
- 21:10Speaker 3: a mid mid round pick, I think he'd beat the guy.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Yeah, Joe Milton's not good at football, just like Joe
- 21:19Speaker 5: Milton is. If it's a Pro day, if it's a combine,
- 21:22Speaker 5: he's going to be the star of the show. When
- 21:24Speaker 5: you actually watch him play football, He's not good.
- 21:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 21:28Speaker 3: It's also a system that no one is really thrived in. Yeah,
- 21:31Speaker 3: Josh Hipel system in the NFL, it's a college system.
- 21:35Speaker 3: It's just that's what it is.
- 21:36Speaker 5: He's got a cannon of an arm. He's got size,
- 21:39Speaker 5: he's got athleticism, you know, in a lot of ways,
- 21:42Speaker 5: Like there's guys like that. You know Anthony Richardson, right,
- 21:45Speaker 5: But Anthony Richardson's got natural quarterback in stinks and ability
- 21:49Speaker 5: to play the game. Joe Milton is not like that.
- 21:51Speaker 5: I think that, you know, we did. I don't know
- 21:53Speaker 5: if we mentioned bo Nicks. You know, Boenix is probably
- 21:56Speaker 5: skipped over the early day to guy. You know, I've
- 22:00Speaker 5: called him Vanilla ice Cream in the past, like he's
- 22:02Speaker 5: one of those guys with bow Knicks though that is
- 22:05Speaker 5: accurate and on time, and he's gonna hit the short
- 22:08Speaker 5: game and he's gonna do hit the layups in the offense.
- 22:11Speaker 5: He's not gonna do anything else. Like, it's not gonna
- 22:13Speaker 5: be it's not gonna be explosive, it's not gonna be fun.
- 22:15Speaker 5: It's not gonna be creative. But if you're just looking
- 22:18Speaker 5: for a distributor, a point guard at the position, and
- 22:21Speaker 5: bow Knicks has some ability to do that. I've heard,
- 22:24Speaker 5: you know, Alex Smith, you know, best case scenario maybe
- 22:26Speaker 5: like a Baker Mayfield, you know, like those types of
- 22:28Speaker 5: comps for him, he's a little bit more athletic than
- 22:31Speaker 5: like a mac Jones, Like he can run around a
- 22:33Speaker 5: little bit more so. He's got some skill. Spencer rattler,
- 22:36Speaker 5: I think has two things going for him. He's got
- 22:39Speaker 5: a huge arm. He's got natural arm talent, can flick
- 22:42Speaker 5: it from any platform, he's really got a good arm,
- 22:45Speaker 5: and he's got a decent feel for navigating pressure in
- 22:48Speaker 5: the pocket. You know, he's got some of that bob
- 22:50Speaker 5: and weave to him in the pocket. But he holds
- 22:53Speaker 5: the ball a lot. It doesn't see the field particularly
- 22:55Speaker 5: great and.
- 22:57Speaker 3: His skills a lot. Yeah, he has a lot of skill,
- 22:59Speaker 3: but he sometimes relies a little too much on him.
- 23:02Speaker 5: Yeah, and he's a shade over six feet tall, so
- 23:05Speaker 5: he's not the biggest guy either. I think great com
- 23:07Speaker 5: for him is Gardner Minshew. You know, you can see
- 23:10Speaker 5: that there is ability there. But is he ever going
- 23:13Speaker 5: to be the guy that is your guy, like this
- 23:15Speaker 5: is our franchise quarterback. Probably not, but I think he's
- 23:17Speaker 5: gonna kick around the league for like a decade as
- 23:20Speaker 5: like a high end backup type of player.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Any other guys, these these late round guys that.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Rattler was my other guy, Rattler Penix and Penix is
- 23:27Speaker 2: probably gonna go higher than Ratler, or hopefully he does.
- 23:29Speaker 2: But other than that, Drake Maybaby, anybody we missed?
- 23:33Speaker 3: Anyone else guy a little high on the.
- 23:38Speaker 5: Yeah, Bradley from Southern Alabama or South Alabama, I don't
- 23:41Speaker 5: know which one it is. Carter Bradley, he's got he's athletic.
- 23:45Speaker 5: You know, he's a good athlete. He can run around
- 23:47Speaker 5: a little bit. You know, between him and Michael Pratt,
- 23:50Speaker 5: one of those guys is going to stick in the
- 23:52Speaker 5: league as the same kind of category as Spencer Rattler,
- 23:55Speaker 5: like a high end backup, low end starter, spot starter,
- 23:59Speaker 5: that type of player. Bradley probably available a little bit
- 24:02Speaker 5: later than Pratt. Pratt has a chance, I think to
- 24:04Speaker 5: be like a top one fifty pick. You know, he'd
- 24:06Speaker 5: probably go by the end of the fourth round. I
- 24:08Speaker 5: like Prat, Yeah, you know, he's he's not what you
- 24:12Speaker 5: think he is. Pratt Like you think that you're turning
- 24:15Speaker 5: on a tape of like a guy that just doesn't
- 24:18Speaker 5: have the physical tools but has the timing and the
- 24:20Speaker 5: rhythm down. He's actually the opposite, Like he's actually pretty
- 24:23Speaker 5: toolsy for a guy that went to that level of school.
- 24:26Speaker 5: But he's he's just not in the category of some
- 24:29Speaker 5: of these other guys in terms of physical ability, and
- 24:31Speaker 5: he's you know, the timing is not always great either,
- 24:34Speaker 5: so there's some developmental stuff that needs to be done there.
- 24:36Speaker 5: But he's bigger and stronger and faster than you would
- 24:39Speaker 5: think for for where he went to school.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I just wanted to bring those guys up for those
- 24:43Speaker 3: of you looking for the double dip. You know they're
- 24:45Speaker 3: going to get somebody in the first round and oh
- 24:47Speaker 3: it's the fifth round. You know what's let's do the
- 24:49Speaker 3: Kirk Cousins RG three. Pratt could be a you know,
- 24:52Speaker 3: a good pick for that. Yep, yeah, guy Brad a
- 24:55Speaker 3: good pick for that.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:56Speaker 5: I think Pratt is the guy for that, not just
- 24:58Speaker 5: because he kind of looks like Kirk Cousin, but I
- 25:00Speaker 5: also do like that because I think that Rattler, Nicks, Pennix,
- 25:06Speaker 5: like those guys are going to be top one hundred picks.
- 25:08Speaker 5: So if you're really looking for the double dip, you're
- 25:10Speaker 5: thinking fourth or fifth round at the earliest is when
- 25:12Speaker 5: you're going to take the other quarterback.
- 25:14Speaker 4: All right, Well that's going to do it here for
- 25:16Speaker 4: all of our positional previews, certainly quarterback an important one.
- 25:19Speaker 4: Hopefully the Patriots are able to nab one of those
- 25:21Speaker 4: top prospects. So just over a week to go, folks,
- 25:23Speaker 4: We're getting close.
- 25:25Speaker 2: All right, guys, Thanks for tuning in. That wraps up
- 25:28Speaker 2: all of our positional prospect previews. Guys, the last show
- 25:33Speaker 2: is going to be a live show April twenty fourth,
- 25:35Speaker 2: the night before the draft, and we'll be live from
- 25:37Speaker 2: twelve to one pm. We're all going to be here
- 25:40Speaker 2: to go over everything. We might do a little live
- 25:41Speaker 2: mock draft, but we don't want to tease too much here.
- 25:44Speaker 2: But thanks for tuning in.
