- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio The Bible Study Podcast, Episode nine hundred and
- 0:08Speaker 1: sixty four. Today, The Bible Study Podcast wraps up the
- 0:11Speaker 1: study of the Book of Luke. Welcome to the Bible
- 0:22Speaker 1: Study Podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. We're going to
- 0:25Speaker 1: wrap up the study of Luke today as we continue
- 0:27Speaker 1: on with Luke twenty four. But first a word from
- 0:30Speaker 1: this sponsor Luke twenty four. We continue on with the
- 0:34Speaker 1: story of the Resurrection, and we get Jesus appeers to
- 0:37Speaker 1: the disciples. While they were still talking about this, Jesus
- 0:42Speaker 1: stood among them and said, peace be with you. This
- 0:46Speaker 1: that they're talking about here is we've just done the
- 0:48Speaker 1: story of the two disciples who saw Jesus on the
- 0:52Speaker 1: road to Ammaeus. They come back to Jerusalem, and when
- 0:55Speaker 1: they get there, they're told it's true the Lord has
- 0:58Speaker 1: risen has appeared to Simon or to Peter, Simon Peter,
- 1:02Speaker 1: and that's this in the sentence. So while they were
- 1:07Speaker 1: still talking about this, Jesus stood among them and said
- 1:09Speaker 1: to them, Peace be with you. They were startled and frightened,
- 1:13Speaker 1: thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, why
- 1:16Speaker 1: are you troubled and why do doubts rise in your minds.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Look at my hands and at my feet. It is
- 1:23Speaker 1: I myself. Touch me and see. A ghost does not
- 1:26Speaker 1: have flesh and bones as you see I have. When
- 1:30Speaker 1: he said this, he showed them his hands and feet,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and while they still did not believe it because of
- 1:35Speaker 1: joy and amazement, he asked them, do you have anything
- 1:38Speaker 1: here to eat? They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
- 1:42Speaker 1: and he took it and ate it. In their presence.
- 1:45Speaker 1: He said to them, this is what I told you
- 1:47Speaker 1: while I was still with you. Everything must be fulfilled
- 1:50Speaker 1: that is written about me in the Law of Moses,
- 1:53Speaker 1: the Prophets, and the Psalms. Then he opened their minds
- 1:56Speaker 1: so they could understand the scriptures. He told them, this
- 2:00Speaker 1: is what is written. The Messiah will suffer and rise
- 2:02Speaker 1: from the dead on the third day, and repentance for
- 2:06Speaker 1: the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name
- 2:08Speaker 1: to all nations beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of
- 2:13Speaker 1: these things. I'm going to send you what my father
- 2:17Speaker 1: has promised, but stay in the city until you have
- 2:19Speaker 1: been clothed with power from on high. So this is
- 2:24Speaker 1: the story that Luke tells. The version of it that
- 2:27Speaker 1: Luke tells about the appearance of the disciples. A couple
- 2:30Speaker 1: things to note here is they were just told that
- 2:34Speaker 1: it is true. There was just this conversation that it's
- 2:37Speaker 1: true Jesus's rise from the dead. Peter has seen him.
- 2:41Speaker 1: We understand, you two just saw him on the road
- 2:43Speaker 1: to Amaeis. It's still a tough thing to believe. We
- 2:47Speaker 1: talk about it every Sunday at church as if it
- 2:51Speaker 1: were a normal thing. But this is not something that
- 2:53Speaker 1: happens very often. Now, these are the same disciples that
- 2:57Speaker 1: saw Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead, so they have
- 3:02Speaker 1: also seen him raise the son of the widow of Nane,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and so it isn't something that is completely unheard of
- 3:09Speaker 1: for them. And yet it's still something that doesn't happen
- 3:12Speaker 1: every day. So they see Jesus right after this conversation
- 3:16Speaker 1: about how Jesus is raised from the dead, and they
- 3:19Speaker 1: think they're seeing a ghost. It's just a normal natural reaction.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And so he says, touch me, I have flesh and bones.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Let me have something to eat. They give him something,
- 3:30Speaker 1: Indeed he eats it. So apparently his resurrected body still
- 3:35Speaker 1: works like a body in the sense that he can
- 3:37Speaker 1: still eat, he still has flesh and bones. It is
- 3:41Speaker 1: different in some ways in the sense that they have
- 3:44Speaker 1: trouble recognizing him sometimes like on the road to Amais,
- 3:47Speaker 1: or he keeps them from recognizing him in some ways.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And then he shows them his hands and feet apparently
- 3:53Speaker 1: where there is still evidence of crucifixion, and that's why
- 3:59Speaker 1: we have this. In other versions, we have you know, Thomas,
- 4:04Speaker 1: put your hand in my wound basically so that you
- 4:08Speaker 1: can see that it is me. We don't have that
- 4:10Speaker 1: in this version. But he's still showing them his hands
- 4:12Speaker 1: and feet where apparently there are scars or holes or
- 4:16Speaker 1: I don't know what exactly, but there is evidence of crucifixion.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So they finally get to the point of okay, we
- 4:23Speaker 1: understand this is Jesus, and he says, I told you
- 4:27Speaker 1: all this was going to happen. And remember we had
- 4:30Speaker 1: him talking on at least three occasions about I'm going
- 4:34Speaker 1: to go to Jerusalem and I'm going to be handed
- 4:37Speaker 1: over to the Gentiles and I'm going to be killed,
- 4:40Speaker 1: and then a third day I'm going to rose again, right,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and the third day I'm going to rise again. He
- 4:44Speaker 1: told them that explicitly, but now he's opening their mind
- 4:48Speaker 1: to the scriptures, as he did with the two on
- 4:50Speaker 1: the Road to Ammaeis. He's saying, this isn't something new.
- 4:57Speaker 1: If you go back into the Book of Isaiah, for instance,
- 5:01Speaker 1: the prophets, you will see that this was the plan
- 5:06Speaker 1: all along. Now they knew about Messiah. But again, there
- 5:11Speaker 1: are two sets of verses in the Old Testament that
- 5:14Speaker 1: talk about Messiah, some that talk about conquering king and
- 5:18Speaker 1: some that talk about suffering servant. And if you were
- 5:21Speaker 1: a people who are basically occupied by a foreign power,
- 5:28Speaker 1: which of those two sets of verses are going to
- 5:30Speaker 1: be more popular, Well, it's going to be the verses
- 5:34Speaker 1: about the conquering king. And so it isn't that the
- 5:37Speaker 1: other verses weren't there, and maybe they were even aware
- 5:40Speaker 1: of them, but the focus on Messiah was on conquering king.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And so Jesus has to point out that the scriptures
- 5:51Speaker 1: always talked about Messiah will suffer and rise from the
- 5:55Speaker 1: dead on the third day. And then he says the
- 5:58Speaker 1: plan going forward here, you're going to be doing something.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in
- 6:12Speaker 1: his name to all nations. And he's basically saying, by you,
- 6:19Speaker 1: you're going to be talking to not just the Jews,
- 6:22Speaker 1: but to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You're going to
- 6:26Speaker 1: start right here where you are, your witnesses, and I'm
- 6:30Speaker 1: going to send you out, but not yet, wait until
- 6:35Speaker 1: you get power from on high, Wait until the Holy
- 6:37Speaker 1: Spirit comes, which will come, which Luke will also document
- 6:43Speaker 1: in part two of his book, which is the Book
- 6:45Speaker 1: of Acts, which is not what we're going to study next.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I have done a study in the Book of Acts before.
- 6:51Speaker 1: If you want to continue on with this story, you
- 6:53Speaker 1: can go ahead and read on your own as Luke
- 6:55Speaker 1: continues this story in his second book, or you can
- 7:01Speaker 1: listen to those to the Bible Study podcast study on
- 7:05Speaker 1: the Book of Acts. You can find it on the
- 7:07Speaker 1: biblestudypodcast dot com or on your podcast feed. You're going
- 7:11Speaker 1: to have to go back a bit to find that.
- 7:14Speaker 1: But he says, I'm going to send you out with
- 7:16Speaker 1: what my father's promised. Stay in the city until you're
- 7:18Speaker 1: clothed with power. And then Luke closes this first of
- 7:22Speaker 1: two books with the ascension of Jesus. Then, when he
- 7:26Speaker 1: had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he
- 7:28Speaker 1: lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was
- 7:31Speaker 1: blessing them, he left them and was taken up into Heaven.
- 7:35Speaker 1: They worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and they stayed continually at the temple praising God. Now
- 7:43Speaker 1: that's not again the end of the story. The story
- 7:46Speaker 1: continues on in Acts and will take up that story
- 7:50Speaker 1: from Jesus being ascended into Heaven in the Book of
- 7:55Speaker 1: Acts as well. And then, of course the Book of
- 7:58Speaker 1: Acts will continue this theme that we saw in the
- 8:03Speaker 1: Gospel of Luke, that all of this was intended for
- 8:08Speaker 1: every nation. That we see in these verses, we also
- 8:12Speaker 1: saw throughout the Book of Luke that was always Luke's
- 8:15Speaker 1: intention to get that story across. And it becomes even
- 8:20Speaker 1: more obvious in the Book of Acts that this is
- 8:24Speaker 1: not just for the Jews, in the same way that
- 8:28Speaker 1: this is not just for us. This is meant for
- 8:32Speaker 1: every nation. This is God's plan for bringing people back
- 8:37Speaker 1: to Him. And the calling that he gives these disciples
- 8:41Speaker 1: is the same calling that he gives to us to
- 8:44Speaker 1: spread this good news. And that wraps up the study
- 8:51Speaker 1: of Luke. I still haven't dicided for sure, but I
- 8:54Speaker 1: think next time, I'm actually doing something very different. We're
- 8:57Speaker 1: going to go back in the Old Testament and we're
- 8:59Speaker 1: going to look at the belevitical law. This has been
- 9:02Speaker 1: a book that I'll tell you next time why I
- 9:04Speaker 1: have been avoiding doing a study on this for a while.
- 9:08Speaker 1: But we'll get into that next time, so you'll have
- 9:11Speaker 1: to come back. So with that, we're going to end
- 9:13Speaker 1: this episode of the Bible Study Podcast. If you have
