- 2:43Speaker 5: He's written on some dark subjects.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Charlie Manson and David koresh this one on Jim Jones
- 2:54Speaker 1: and Guyana. Today's of forty seventh anniversary. That is really
- 3:00Speaker 1: difficult to believe. And I'll tell you it's really difficult
- 3:03Speaker 1: to believe that early this morning is a twenty sixth
- 3:06Speaker 1: anniversary of Bonfire.
- 3:09Speaker 5: That is just almost impossible.
- 3:12Speaker 1: For me to believe, you know, being here at the
- 3:15Speaker 1: radio station when that happened. Everybody was on call, certainly
- 3:20Speaker 1: that day. It was, as you can imagine, just chaotic
- 3:25Speaker 1: news organizations from all of the world calling our you know,
- 3:29Speaker 1: little radio station wanting information us, trying to get information,
- 3:34Speaker 1: our new staff out. Everybody, like I said, including me,
- 3:39Speaker 1: was on call, trying to do things to help out.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And it was you know, it's unimaginable. Still is still
- 3:49Speaker 1: fresh in the memory of everybody who lived through it.
- 3:53Speaker 1: There's no doubt about that.
- 3:56Speaker 5: You know. Our good friends.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Son was the head yell leader at the time, Jeff Bailey,
- 4:04Speaker 1: so he was on the news. And one of the
- 4:07Speaker 1: first calls that I made, a friend of ours called
- 4:11Speaker 1: early in the morning, say have you have you heard
- 4:13Speaker 1: the news?
- 4:14Speaker 5: No, we hadn't hearn the.
- 4:15Speaker 1: News, And and I called him, and you know, they
- 4:23Speaker 1: were in San Antonio at the time.
- 4:24Speaker 5: I said, hey, have you heard from Jeff?
- 4:27Speaker 1: The first people I thought of, and fortunately they they
- 4:32Speaker 1: had heard from Jeff. And obviously he had been out
- 4:37Speaker 1: at the bonfire site. I don't think he was there
- 4:40Speaker 1: when the site collapsed, but you know, this is something
- 4:47Speaker 1: that that led to I've said over and over. The
- 4:50Speaker 1: most unique sporting event I've ever been to. I mean,
- 4:54Speaker 1: there's and there was nothing like it, and and you know,
- 4:57Speaker 1: I hope I am never at an thing like it again,
- 5:01Speaker 1: quite frankly, but it was. It was just it was
- 5:05Speaker 1: an amazing morning slash afternoon at at at Kyle Field
- 5:11Speaker 1: that day. And you know what brought it about, obviously,
- 5:17Speaker 1: was was extremely tragic, and the the atmosphere was just
- 5:23Speaker 1: so unique.
- 5:24Speaker 5: It was just unbelievable. I've said it many times.
- 5:29Speaker 1: The crowd was just quiet when they walked in that day,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and then the first half is just chaos, and then
- 5:37Speaker 1: it just did dead quiet because of the bands and
- 5:41Speaker 1: the presentation at halftime, and then just chaos in the
- 5:45Speaker 1: second half and then kind of quiet as everybody left
- 5:54Speaker 1: after the game. So really a remarkable time, a painful time,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and you know, we won't forget it. You know, we
- 6:03Speaker 1: lived through it, and it was it's difficult, still difficult, obviously,
- 6:08Speaker 1: but twenty six years is just man, that's hard to believe,
- 6:13Speaker 1: all right, from the sublime to the ridiculous, From the
- 6:19Speaker 1: I mean, forty seven years ago today, nine hundred and
- 6:24Speaker 1: eighteen people died nine hundred and nine at the Jones
- 6:30Speaker 1: what was called Jonestown in the middle of a forest
- 6:33Speaker 1: in Guyana, where Jim Jones had taken. These people nine
- 6:39Speaker 1: hundred and nine at Jonestown, all but two from cyanide poisoning.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Five more killed at the airport, including a congressman from
- 6:50Speaker 1: California who was investigating Jim Jones and the temple, Leo Ryan,
- 6:56Speaker 1: members of his traveling staff, and Don Harris of Nby News,
- 7:01Speaker 1: who I had worked with when I interned at WFAATV
- 7:06Speaker 1: in Dallas. Don Harris was an anchor. Scott de Lucia
- 7:09Speaker 1: tells me today that his son at the time was
- 7:13Speaker 1: doing an internship with Scott at KCEN in Temple when
- 7:18Speaker 1: this happened. In nineteen seventy eight, Jeff gwyn wrote a
- 7:23Speaker 1: book about it, The Road to Jonestown. It's like everything,
- 7:28Speaker 1: Jeff Gwinn writes a terrific book, and I thought i'd
- 7:31Speaker 1: replay that interview for you.
- 7:34Speaker 5: Great.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Let's jump out to the Polaris Fund Center phone line
- 7:37Speaker 1: and welcome back author Jeff Gwynn. His latest book is
- 7:41Speaker 1: called The Road to Jonestown, Jim Jones and People's Temple.
- 7:45Speaker 5: Jeff, it is great to have you back. How are you.
- 7:47Speaker 7: I'm doing fine. It's good to talk to you again.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks so much. This was just a compelling book
- 7:53Speaker 1: to read at some time. It was a really disturbing
- 7:56Speaker 1: book to read as well.
- 7:58Speaker 7: Well, it was disturbing to research, right, Yeah, I bet
- 8:01Speaker 7: it was.
- 8:02Speaker 1: You've been drawn to some amazing characters that you have
- 8:08Speaker 1: written about over the years, with Charles Manson and Bonnie
- 8:11Speaker 1: and Clyde and the Ok Corral and the Irp family.
- 8:16Speaker 1: What draws you two characters like this that you write about.
- 8:21Speaker 7: Well, what I'm really trying to do is figure out
- 8:23Speaker 7: how the different years in American history run over into
- 8:27Speaker 7: each other. And so when I try to look at
- 8:30Speaker 7: different times in our history, you look for some iconic
- 8:33Speaker 7: individual or event, And it's a fact we tend to
- 8:37Speaker 7: remember the tragedies a lot more than anything else.
- 8:40Speaker 5: Yeah, no question about that.
- 8:43Speaker 1: What was the most compelling thing about Jim Jones that
- 8:48Speaker 1: you discovered.
- 8:49Speaker 7: Well, this was the most surprising book I've ever written
- 8:53Speaker 7: in terms of what I learned. I had not known
- 8:56Speaker 7: that before he really disintegrated and became what he came,
- 9:00Speaker 7: he was one of the great leaders in the early
- 9:03Speaker 7: civil rights movement, and that most of the people that
- 9:07Speaker 7: he brought in two People's temple were really intelligent, socially
- 9:13Speaker 7: conscious folks. This wasn't a matter of some weird demagogue
- 9:17Speaker 7: in his brain dead zombie followers. It was far from that.
- 9:22Speaker 7: So then you get to the point, then, how can intelligent,
- 9:25Speaker 7: capable people be brought to the point where almost all
- 9:29Speaker 7: of them are going to die together in the jungle
- 9:31Speaker 7: in Guyana. So it was a lot more complicated than
- 9:34Speaker 7: I expected.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Let's talk about his childhood first a little bit, Jeff,
- 9:38Speaker 1: and you write extensively about that. He was relatively relatively poor.
- 9:46Speaker 1: His father wasn't around, and he was relatively on his
- 9:51Speaker 1: own at a pretty young age.
- 9:53Speaker 5: Was he not well?
- 9:55Speaker 7: He's living in a little farm community in Indiana, and
- 9:59Speaker 7: there were a lot of Jones relatives all up and
- 10:01Speaker 7: down the block. So he was never quite as deserted
- 10:05Speaker 7: as a child as he tried to make it sound.
- 10:07Speaker 7: But he had a hard time. His mother was particularly wacky.
- 10:12Speaker 7: She firmly believed in reincarnation that she had been a
- 10:16Speaker 7: great woman many lives past, and that it was her
- 10:19Speaker 7: fate to give birth to the greatest man who ever lived.
- 10:23Speaker 7: And when you're four or five, six years old, and
- 10:25Speaker 7: your mother keeps telling you this constantly. It's going to
- 10:28Speaker 7: have an effect.
- 10:30Speaker 1: There's this picture you painted of him going into the
- 10:32Speaker 1: woods and standing on a tree stump and practicing his
- 10:36Speaker 1: preaching at a very early age.
- 10:38Speaker 7: There were five churches in this little, tiny Indiana town,
- 10:42Speaker 7: and by the time he's ten, he has joined all
- 10:45Speaker 7: of them, and on Sundays he had run from one
- 10:48Speaker 7: service to the next. The thing about Jones that everybody
- 10:52Speaker 7: misses is that, as crazy as he got with the
- 10:56Speaker 7: terrible things he did which are inexcusable, he started out
- 11:00Speaker 7: as a very committed civil rights activist and did some
- 11:03Speaker 7: amazing things the.
- 11:05Speaker 1: City of Indianapolis especially. He brought the races together at
- 11:09Speaker 1: a time when they certainly anywhere else in America they
- 11:13Speaker 1: were not.
- 11:15Speaker 7: Jones was able by sheer force of personality to get
- 11:20Speaker 7: whites and blacks together and actually make some social progress.
- 11:24Speaker 7: And when he started, Indianapolis was one of the most
- 11:27Speaker 7: segregated major cities in America, and by the time he's
- 11:31Speaker 7: finishing up in the early nineteen sixties, it's one of
- 11:34Speaker 7: the most integrated. And there was exactly one person mostly
- 11:38Speaker 7: responsible for that. It was Jim Jones.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I was struck by his ability to function on very
- 11:47Speaker 1: little sleep, as you write about.
- 11:50Speaker 7: Well, of course he was helped out. He liked to
- 11:53Speaker 7: self medicate a lot and became a really bad drug ava.
- 11:57Speaker 5: But he didn't do that early on, did he, Jeff.
- 12:00Speaker 7: Not that we know of. Yeah, he really would go
- 12:03Speaker 7: on maybe three or four hours sleep a night, But
- 12:06Speaker 7: of course that catches up with you.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Well, yeah, it does catch up with you.
- 12:11Speaker 1: But one of the things that he used in his
- 12:14Speaker 1: favor was when he asked people to work, they'd see
- 12:17Speaker 1: him always with the light on in his office and think, well,
- 12:20Speaker 1: he's not asking us to do anything that he's not doing.
- 12:24Speaker 7: By example, he taught his followers that every waking minute
- 12:29Speaker 7: ought to be used for trying to bring about the
- 12:32Speaker 7: common good, and he really did do that. The problem was,
- 12:36Speaker 7: there's another complete side of his personality. He was a
- 12:40Speaker 7: fake faith healer. And in the book if you've ever
- 12:43Speaker 7: wondered how these healers can cure cancers and let the
- 12:47Speaker 7: blind see, we write about all the tricks of the trade.
- 12:51Speaker 7: But the point being he's two people at once. He
- 12:54Speaker 7: is this great, sensitive, totally dedicated civil rights and social activist,
- 13:00Speaker 7: and yet he's also a con artist who's cheating and
- 13:03Speaker 7: lying and deceiving to get people to follow him and
- 13:06Speaker 7: then explaining when they would catch him in his deceptions.
- 13:10Speaker 7: I'm just doing what I need to do to get
- 13:13Speaker 7: everyone together for the common good.
- 13:16Speaker 1: And of course that plays itself out to disastrous consequences,
- 13:21Speaker 1: which we'll get to. But for a lot of time
- 13:25Speaker 1: when he was laboring, I mean they were poor, even him.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I mean they didn't have much money, did they.
- 13:33Speaker 7: No, they didn't. And the Church People's Temple in Indiana
- 13:37Speaker 7: and then in California had some of the most progressive
- 13:40Speaker 7: social programs anybody in the country had seen before, from
- 13:45Speaker 7: free drug rehabilitation clinics to free restaurants and clothing drives,
- 13:51Speaker 7: so if you were hungry or needed a coat, you
- 13:53Speaker 7: got it, no questions asked. And they even sent poor
- 13:57Speaker 7: ghetto kids to college, picking up the full tab so
- 14:01Speaker 7: that these kids who otherwise would have only been educated
- 14:03Speaker 7: on the streets, had a chance to make something of themselves.
- 14:07Speaker 7: It was just astounding to learn about because nobody ever
- 14:10Speaker 7: remembers that.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Sure tell us a little bit about Marcelene Baldwin.
- 14:17Speaker 7: Jim Jones's wife, I think defines the term long suffering
- 14:22Speaker 7: She was very much a dedicated Christian. She had been
- 14:28Speaker 7: a Methodist and in working with him, became a committed
- 14:34Speaker 7: civil rights integrationist. He was loud and blustery, he was tactless,
- 14:40Speaker 7: and in a lot of ways, she held people's temple
- 14:43Speaker 7: together by soothing feelings. When he hurt them, he would
- 14:47Speaker 7: he was not too good at explaining exactly what he
- 14:50Speaker 7: wanted people to do. Marcelyn would step in, and yet
- 14:54Speaker 7: he rewards her by basically setting her aside. And he
- 14:59Speaker 7: became very sexually active, not just with a lot of
- 15:03Speaker 7: women in people's temple, but men as well. He not
- 15:06Speaker 7: only wanted their souls, he wanted their bodies.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that kind of surprised, not the sexual activity with women,
- 15:14Speaker 1: but you write about his liaisons with men as well.
- 15:18Speaker 7: That's true. And we've got to remember in the nineteen fifties,
- 15:21Speaker 7: in the nineteen sixties, I mean, bisexuality is a touchy
- 15:25Speaker 7: topic today, so you can imagine what it must the
- 15:29Speaker 7: pressure must have been like for him when he's a
- 15:32Speaker 7: public figure and at any time his reputation could be ruined,
- 15:36Speaker 7: as of course it eventually was. In the mid nineteen seventies.
- 15:40Speaker 1: You write about his ability to remember people's names. He
- 15:46Speaker 1: visited people at hospitals, He asked about their families, their children.
- 15:51Speaker 1: He had a real ability to connect on a personal level,
- 15:56Speaker 1: did he not?
- 15:57Speaker 7: He really did. I think we've all met one or
- 15:59Speaker 7: two people like that who just seemed to engage totally
- 16:02Speaker 7: with whatever person they're talking to at the time. Jones
- 16:06Speaker 7: would give these apparently rambling, four five hour sermons, and
- 16:10Speaker 7: they taped them all. When I first listened to them,
- 16:13Speaker 7: I thought, my god, it's all gibberish. But then I
- 16:16Speaker 7: realized cooler and all get out within those sermons. Because
- 16:20Speaker 7: he attracted so many different kinds of people to his following,
- 16:24Speaker 7: at some point everybody would hear something that he or
- 16:27Speaker 7: she would feel was being said directly to them, and
- 16:32Speaker 7: it was just a great.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Gift of his Let's discuss the move to northern California
- 16:39Speaker 1: and how he was welcomed with open arms by the
- 16:43Speaker 1: politicians there.
- 16:45Speaker 7: The thing about Jim Jones is he knew how to
- 16:49Speaker 7: ingratiate himself.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Yes, he did people, yep.
- 16:51Speaker 7: And by the time he's built up his following in California.
- 16:56Speaker 7: In San Francisco alone, he's not only got five thousand
- 16:59Speaker 7: ACT members whom if they're endorsing a politician, will all
- 17:04Speaker 7: go vote for him or her, but they will also
- 17:06Speaker 7: go out and walk the poor neighborhoods. They would use
- 17:10Speaker 7: church buses to bring voters directly to the polls. So essentially,
- 17:15Speaker 7: it became known in California that if Jim Jones and
- 17:20Speaker 7: People's Temple supported your candidacy, they could tip a close election.
- 17:25Speaker 7: And naturally, the politicians in both parties came flocking trying
- 17:31Speaker 7: to engage Jones People's Temple, and that made Jim Jones
- 17:36Speaker 7: a real political powerhouse. He had real cloud, not just
- 17:40Speaker 7: the appearance of it.
- 17:42Speaker 1: So the more cloud he got, the bigger his ego became.
- 17:47Speaker 7: He personally believed that he was the greatest man on
- 17:50Speaker 7: the face of the earth and that whatever he wanted
- 17:54Speaker 7: or said had to be true. And the reason I
- 17:57Speaker 7: finally thought it's worth understanding taking the time to figure
- 18:02Speaker 7: out Jim Jones and People's Temple is because ultimately it's
- 18:06Speaker 7: the perfect example of what a demogogue does. They identify
- 18:10Speaker 7: themselves as the only person who can solve a problem.
- 18:13Speaker 7: They teach their followers you have to believe in me,
- 18:16Speaker 7: and anyone who doesn't is the enemy, and then finally,
- 18:20Speaker 7: they take current events, you know, and there's always something
- 18:23Speaker 7: bad happening, but they exaggerate the danger to make it
- 18:27Speaker 7: look as though the apocalypse could be happening anytime. And
- 18:32Speaker 7: Jones did that. He was a classic text book case
- 18:35Speaker 7: of it. And of course any demogogue is ultimately going
- 18:39Speaker 7: to lead his followers into disaster. If we can study
- 18:42Speaker 7: what Jones did, it might help us recognize a few
- 18:46Speaker 7: more that are in the present day.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Now, the move to Guyana, let's discuss that and the
- 18:57Speaker 1: People's temple.
- 18:58Speaker 5: He sends p people over there, and I'm telling you.
- 19:03Speaker 1: It's amazing what these people created out of the deepest,
- 19:09Speaker 1: thickest jungles in all.
- 19:11Speaker 8: Of the world.
- 19:12Speaker 7: I would not have understood that accomplishment if I hadn't
- 19:16Speaker 7: gone over there myself, and the jungles overgrown where Jonestown was,
- 19:21Speaker 7: so we had to cut our way in with machetes,
- 19:24Speaker 7: and I swear to you, I have never seen anything
- 19:27Speaker 7: like it.
- 19:28Speaker 9: Yet.
- 19:28Speaker 7: They carved out this huge working farm with the idea
- 19:33Speaker 7: that all the excess food would be given to hungry
- 19:35Speaker 7: people in South America. The Guyanese government all these years,
- 19:39Speaker 7: since it's almost forty years, periodically have tried to do
- 19:43Speaker 7: the same thing. Every one of those has failed within months.
- 19:47Speaker 7: Jim Jones in about one thousand people, mostly ghetto dwellers
- 19:51Speaker 7: who never so much as mode a lawn, go into
- 19:54Speaker 7: this jungle and do what the agricultural experts in that
- 19:58Speaker 7: country itself were not able to do. For all his faults,
- 20:02Speaker 7: he was an amazing.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Leader, and the Guyanese government kind of liked having them
- 20:07Speaker 1: there as a buffer with the border.
- 20:09Speaker 7: Right, Oh, you bet. Guyana was just becoming an independent country.
- 20:15Speaker 7: They had hardly any military. Venezuela on their northwest border
- 20:19Speaker 7: starts making noises about we think we actually own a
- 20:23Speaker 7: lot of the country, you know that you currently claim,
- 20:27Speaker 7: and they're talking about sending their military in just to
- 20:29Speaker 7: overrun it. Guyana was thrilled that here's this American missionary
- 20:36Speaker 7: and his American followers who want to live in the
- 20:39Speaker 7: exact place Venezuela is trying to take over. Now, Venezuela
- 20:43Speaker 7: might be willing to take on the Guyanese army, but
- 20:46Speaker 7: they are not going to mess around with the Americans.
- 20:49Speaker 7: So the Guyanese welcome them, and then of course they're
- 20:52Speaker 7: going to overlook the increasingly bizarre things that are happening there.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Okay, the increasingly bizarre things that brings attention to the Congress,
- 21:03Speaker 1: to officials. Leo Ryan, who you kind of mentioned as
- 21:07Speaker 1: a grandstander who loved the cameras.
- 21:10Speaker 5: He was certain to take cameras.
- 21:12Speaker 1: With him when he went to Jonestown to personally check
- 21:15Speaker 1: all of this stuff out. Let's talk about when things
- 21:19Speaker 1: started going bad.
- 21:21Speaker 7: Jones fled America for Guyana in the mid nineteen seventies
- 21:27Speaker 7: when the first investigative reporting proved that people were being
- 21:31Speaker 7: mistreated in People's Temple, that he was dishing out corporal
- 21:36Speaker 7: punishment to his followers, that there were a lot of
- 21:39Speaker 7: money trails that didn't make sense, and he lost his
- 21:42Speaker 7: power base. Jonestown in Guyana had originally been planned. It's
- 21:47Speaker 7: just sort of a farm system out post for People's Temple,
- 21:51Speaker 7: maybe a few hundred people living there, and that was
- 21:54Speaker 7: all it could really support. But Jones shows up with
- 21:57Speaker 7: almost one thousand followers, imediately overcrowded. The jungle is literally
- 22:03Speaker 7: one hundred and fifty miles away from the nearest civilization. Jones,
- 22:08Speaker 7: with his drug use, is increasingly paranoid, and so every
- 22:12Speaker 7: night his followers hear Jim Jones talking about back in
- 22:16Speaker 7: America they've opened the first concentration camp for blacks, And
- 22:21Speaker 7: clearly it sounds ridiculous now, but the people with Jim
- 22:24Speaker 7: Jones remembered the interment camps in World War II for
- 22:28Speaker 7: Japanese Americans, so the things he's telling them seem possible.
- 22:33Speaker 7: They get paranoid. The government's the enemy. And then Leo Ryan,
- 22:38Speaker 7: a congressman from the Bay Area, hears from constituents that
- 22:42Speaker 7: they think some of their relatives are being held in
- 22:45Speaker 7: Jonestown against their will. So Ryan decides in November nineteen
- 22:50Speaker 7: seventy eight he's going to go investigate and bring the
- 22:53Speaker 7: media and some of the concerned relatives with him. At
- 22:56Speaker 7: precisely the time, Jim Jones is being overcome with paranoia
- 23:00Speaker 7: and decides there has to be one last grand gesture
- 23:04Speaker 7: so his name will live in history.
- 23:07Speaker 1: How many of these nine hundred plus people, Jeff, what
- 23:11Speaker 1: percentage can you even guess took the poison voluntarily? And
- 23:18Speaker 1: how many of them were forced to take the poison?
- 23:21Speaker 7: We actually have a pretty good idea of this. There
- 23:24Speaker 7: were a couple survivors from that day who were there
- 23:27Speaker 7: for part of it, and I track them down and
- 23:29Speaker 7: they talk to me. They're on the record in the
- 23:30Speaker 7: book and in Guyana, I got to see all the
- 23:33Speaker 7: different records of the bodies that they were discovered on
- 23:37Speaker 7: the terrible day. Remember, Jonestown population is really three parts.
- 23:42Speaker 7: There's about three hundred children, mostly infants and toddlers. They
- 23:46Speaker 7: really have no choice. There's about two hundred old people,
- 23:51Speaker 7: seventy eighty even ninety years old, and they're in the jungle.
- 23:54Speaker 7: If they don't do this, they're not going to survive
- 23:57Speaker 7: another day anyway. Finally, you've got about three hundred and
- 24:01Speaker 7: fifty adults. And of those three hundred and fifty, maybe
- 24:04Speaker 7: one hundred really worshiped Jim Jones. They believe everything he says.
- 24:08Speaker 7: He says take this, you're going to just fall asleep
- 24:11Speaker 7: and step over. It's not suicide. It's a revolutionary gesture.
- 24:15Speaker 7: But at least one hundred and probably more try to
- 24:19Speaker 7: fight it, and there's tapes of it. You can do
- 24:21Speaker 7: them screaming. But Jones has surrounded the pavilion in Jonestown
- 24:26Speaker 7: with armed guards and those who won't take the poison
- 24:29Speaker 7: voluntarily are held down and forcibly injected. You can tell
- 24:34Speaker 7: because when they find the bodies. There's an abscess where
- 24:37Speaker 7: the needle went in, and so we know that probably
- 24:42Speaker 7: out of nine hundred who died, if we take out
- 24:45Speaker 7: the children who don't have any choice and the old
- 24:48Speaker 7: people who really are looking at death in another way,
- 24:51Speaker 7: if they don't do this, probably no more than one
- 24:54Speaker 7: hundred to one hundred and twenty five people out of
- 24:56Speaker 7: over nine hundred voluntarily died that day. It was mass murder,
- 25:01Speaker 7: it was not mass suicide.
- 25:03Speaker 5: And also he died of a gunshot.
- 25:08Speaker 7: You know, dying from cyanide poisoning is one of the
- 25:11Speaker 7: worst ways to go. Your body can't take in oxygen,
- 25:14Speaker 7: you go into convulsions, you froth at the mouth. It's
- 25:17Speaker 7: just horrible. And on the tape of her Jones screaming
- 25:21Speaker 7: at his people, no, no, Socialists shouldn't die like this.
- 25:25Speaker 7: They're not doing this because they're in pain. It's just
- 25:28Speaker 7: a little bitter tasting. But at the end, he wouldn't
- 25:32Speaker 7: do it himself. There were only two people who died
- 25:35Speaker 7: by gunshot wounds rather than poison, Jones and his personal nurse,
- 25:40Speaker 7: and it's very likely he asked her to go ahead
- 25:42Speaker 7: and despatch him and then she could have the honor
- 25:45Speaker 7: of dying the way that he did, and.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Like a lot of the things that he did, it
- 25:51Speaker 1: was great for everybody else, but it wasn't for him.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I mean, like most Marxists and socialists, we're all going
- 25:58Speaker 1: to share, but he's the one that gets the extra women,
- 26:02Speaker 1: the extra food, the extra water, the extra places to
- 26:06Speaker 1: stay well.
- 26:07Speaker 7: Again, it's an object lesson when we look at almost
- 26:10Speaker 7: any kind of populist movement, you know, in America or
- 26:13Speaker 7: anywhere else in the world, if the leader is allowed
- 26:18Speaker 7: to do whatever he wants to without any checks or balances,
- 26:21Speaker 7: then ultimately it descends into darkness and demagoguery. And that's
- 26:26Speaker 7: what happened in Jonestown. Like I said, we can learn
- 26:28Speaker 7: an awful lot if we study what happened. It wasn't
- 26:32Speaker 7: just a bunch of zombies drinking kool aid, and it
- 26:34Speaker 7: wasn't even kool Aid at all. It was a cheap
- 26:38Speaker 7: knockoff called Flavor eight. But there are lessons here and
- 26:41Speaker 7: they're worth learning.
- 26:43Speaker 1: It's a fascinating, disturbing read. It's called The Road to Jonestown,
- 26:48Speaker 1: Jim Jones and People's Temple. It's through Simon and Schuster
- 26:52Speaker 1: and Jeff Gwynn is the author. Jeff, I really enjoyed it.
- 26:56Speaker 1: I hope you keep writing. I don't know if you
- 27:00Speaker 1: want to talk about anything now because you just finished
- 27:02Speaker 1: a book.
- 27:02Speaker 5: But do you have anything in mind for.
- 27:05Speaker 7: The future the next nonfiction book? I do after seven
- 27:09Speaker 7: years writing about Charlie Manson and Jim Jones, nobody's going
- 27:13Speaker 7: to die. I guarantee that.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Give us a happy story next time, would you?
- 27:19Speaker 7: I promise I will.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Jeff, thanks so much for the time. Jeff Glenn is
- 27:24Speaker 1: just a terrific author. We've had him on a number
- 27:27Speaker 1: of times. He takes characters you wouldn't want to spend
- 27:33Speaker 1: any time with and writes about them. Books on David
- 27:38Speaker 1: Koresh and Bonnie and Clyde and just I mean a
- 27:44Speaker 1: number of wyatt earp and a gunfight at the OK Corral.
- 27:48Speaker 1: That was a good one. This one, The Road to Jobstown.
- 27:52Speaker 1: It's been out about eight years. It actually came out
- 28:00Speaker 1: just before coinciding with I think I guess the fortieth
- 28:06Speaker 1: anniversary something like that, So that was forty eight years
- 28:14Speaker 1: ago that that's happened, hard believe, and nine hundred and
- 28:23Speaker 1: eighteen people lost their lives. Producers Cooperative closing up here

- 31:09Speaker 5: Is the best of Mallory.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Mallory is on the Plaris Fund Center. Zoom line was
- 31:16Speaker 1: brought to us by Southwest Card World. You know, the
- 31:19Speaker 1: World Series is going on. Not a lot of people
- 31:21Speaker 1: around here know this, Mallory, but it is. And all
- 31:26Speaker 1: the celebs were out last night in La Okay. But
- 31:31Speaker 1: the biggest of them all the bebes, Justin and Haley
- 31:38Speaker 1: with a rare public outing. You know, Justin's a big
- 31:43Speaker 1: Toronto guy. He was sporting his Blue Jays swag last night.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Haley was cash in a gray jacket, tiny blue star
- 31:56Speaker 1: sticker on her forehead to show her own port for
- 32:00Speaker 1: her hubby. You know he hasn't been crazy about the Dodgers.
- 32:10Speaker 1: The couple's no stranger to game night. They were at
- 32:13Speaker 1: the Super Bowl, the MLS Cup Final, the twenty two
- 32:18Speaker 1: Super Bowl, but their outings together are few and far
- 32:23Speaker 1: between since Jack blues Bieber came along a year ago.
- 32:28Speaker 5: Do you realize that little scamps over a year old
- 32:31Speaker 5: now wild grow up? They grow up so fast.
- 32:42Speaker 11: I don't even remember the first hour.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I don't this story doesn't say if Justin and Haley
- 32:51Speaker 1: stayed for the entire game. I would rather doubt it
- 32:54Speaker 1: since it lasted over six hours and went eighteen innings.
- 32:59Speaker 5: Oh my god, yes, yes, yes, it was a long
- 33:04Speaker 5: one last night.
- 33:06Speaker 11: Well, you know, the people have paid to be there.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Hey, I'm telling you they did get their money's worth
- 33:12Speaker 1: and probably a nap or two along the way.
- 33:15Speaker 11: Basically two games, you.
- 33:18Speaker 5: Know, I did two for the price of one. Congrats,
- 33:23Speaker 5: congrats to them.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Unfortunately, the Beabs left unhappy his his team lost.
- 33:31Speaker 5: Well, what are you going to do?
- 33:32Speaker 11: Want them all?
- 33:33Speaker 5: What are you going to do? I think Taylor was
- 33:36Speaker 5: at a game last night, was she not?
- 33:38Speaker 11: She was, but she was a lot more discreet really, imagine,
- 33:42Speaker 11: you know, And I've noticed this this. I don't know
- 33:44Speaker 11: if it's security concerns or her just getting tired of
- 33:49Speaker 11: people hating on her for going to her Beyonce's football games.
- 33:55Speaker 11: But she did make her wait to the suitek for
- 33:56Speaker 11: another home game to support Travis Kelcey exactly. She sported
- 34:02Speaker 11: a red turtleneck and a golden necklace nice the Chief
- 34:06Speaker 11: Commander's matchup on Monday Night football. She was spotted in
- 34:09Speaker 11: the box next to Brittany Mahomes.
- 34:11Speaker 5: She needs to stay away from her.
- 34:16Speaker 11: Well that friendship which one wow, both just kidding, changing
- 34:24Speaker 11: your mind. He's like, nah, you know what, Actually it's fine.
- 34:28Speaker 11: But they did, you know, point down at the field
- 34:31Speaker 11: after he did get a touchdown, So good.
- 34:34Speaker 5: On you good and she and she does know now
- 34:38Speaker 5: what a touchdown is. After two years of going to games.
- 34:42Speaker 11: You know, we can only hope. We can only hope.
- 34:45Speaker 11: But as a nod to the singer's favorite number, the
- 34:47Speaker 11: announcer said, we've got over thirty cameras bringing you Monday
- 34:49Speaker 11: Night football, and we'll call this camera number thirteen. Oh famous,
- 34:55Speaker 11: honestly her favorite number. Nice But Kelsey arrived in a
- 35:01Speaker 11: white and burnt orange Findye suit. His didn't look echoed
- 35:04Speaker 11: the hue of Taylor Swift's The Life of a Showgirl
- 35:07Speaker 11: error era. Sorry. The pregame commentary, the Titan's brother Jason
- 35:12Speaker 11: Kelsey tease the fit, saying, got to figure out the
- 35:15Speaker 11: bleach in the wash. But with that being said, In
- 35:20Speaker 11: a short contrast to last year's tunnel shruts the televised cutaways,
- 35:24Speaker 11: Swift has brought a lower profile with her appearances only
- 35:28Speaker 11: captured by fans seated below her. Sweet I'm sure, she said,
- 35:34Speaker 11: I don't know, domin me, call my lawyer. If you
- 35:37Speaker 11: put the camera on.
- 35:38Speaker 5: Me, too bad.
- 35:40Speaker 1: If you're gonna go out in public, you're gonna have
- 35:42Speaker 1: the camera on you, so tough deal with it. Speaking
- 35:47Speaker 1: of Kelsey, another Kelsey has had another kid, Kelsey Grammar
- 35:58Speaker 1: seventy years old, seventy. He and his wife Kate, welcome
- 36:10Speaker 1: to son. Last earlier this month, we just had our
- 36:15Speaker 1: fourth one. So it just became eight kids. Christopher is
- 36:21Speaker 1: the name?
- 36:23Speaker 11: This This this fourth with this wife.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Fourth with this wife in fourteen years. He shares faith thirteen,

- 36:54Speaker 11: New Year, New seventy plus year old man having a
- 36:58Speaker 11: child with Are I guess becoming a dad again? Because
- 37:03Speaker 11: wasn't it what Robert de Niro? Who was it last?
- 37:06Speaker 5: Oh he's like eighty two or something like that.
- 37:08Speaker 11: Yeah, but who is the other one with it? No?
- 37:10Speaker 5: I think that's right. Yeah, Pacino's same thing. Yeah, yeah, exactly, So.
- 37:21Speaker 11: Uh, split up whatever wealth you've got left. I guess
- 37:25Speaker 11: I don't know.
- 37:27Speaker 1: So when this kid is going to college, Kelsey will
- 37:32Speaker 1: be gumming oatmeal and some old folks home.
- 37:37Speaker 11: If he's lucky enough.
- 37:38Speaker 5: Yeah, if he lives that long. I mean, come on,
- 37:43Speaker 5: come on.
- 37:43Speaker 11: It sound like you can be that interactive. You think
- 37:46Speaker 11: he's waking up in the middle of the ninety Now
- 37:48Speaker 11: I have Nanny's no I know. Okay, Well, congrats, I
- 37:55Speaker 11: guess sick. Let's switch this up. Okay, I guess whatever.
- 38:02Speaker 11: A completely different type of story. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie
- 38:05Speaker 11: Lee's Curtis's body swapping comedy Freakinger of Friday is coming
- 38:10Speaker 11: to Disney. Plus.
- 38:11Speaker 1: I mean this thing, this thing was a long time ago, right, Well, no,
- 38:16Speaker 1: so they got no.
- 38:17Speaker 5: I mean yeah, Freaking Friday is a long time ago.
- 38:20Speaker 11: Oh yeah, that was two thousand and three. And then
- 38:22Speaker 11: even this one Freakinger of Friday. I think it was
- 38:24Speaker 11: this summer when it came out. I'm not sure it
- 38:27Speaker 11: doesn't matter this equel, but uh to the beloved two
- 38:31Speaker 11: thousand and three film marks. I loved it. But to
- 38:36Speaker 11: be fair, I was very much at that same age
- 38:39Speaker 11: where I would.
- 38:40Speaker 5: Love it No, okay, I mean.
- 38:44Speaker 11: I thought it was great.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Look, it was cute, you know it was it was cute.
- 38:51Speaker 1: I'll leave it at that.
- 38:53Speaker 11: You're being very nice. Anyways, it's coming to It's coming,
- 38:56Speaker 11: uh to Disney Plus.
- 38:58Speaker 5: To be honest, I mean, I'm a big Jamie Curtis fan.
- 39:01Speaker 5: I like Jamie Lee Curtis.
- 39:04Speaker 11: I like Jamie Lee Curtis, and I actually like her
- 39:06Speaker 11: and Lindsay Lohand's relationship outside of this, but also in
- 39:10Speaker 11: the movie. I thought it was nice. Anyways, it will
- 39:13Speaker 11: be available in Disney Plus at three am Eastern Time,
- 39:16Speaker 11: midnight when November twelfth.
- 39:19Speaker 5: Oh well, hot hot dog, I'll be there three am.
- 39:23Speaker 11: If you must serve Friday.
- 39:25Speaker 1: I'll set I'll set my my alarm.
- 39:29Speaker 11: It's like when they got the Royal wedding, you know, but.
- 39:32Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, alarm exactly. I didn't do that.
- 39:36Speaker 11: Exciting guys, I didn't do that.
- 39:38Speaker 5: By the time I woke up, the Royal Wedding was over.
- 39:41Speaker 11: I'm gonna be honest with you. There's nothing that can
- 39:43Speaker 11: wake me up in the middle of the night that's
- 39:46Speaker 11: important enough to me. Besides when my child did that,
- 39:49Speaker 11: and you know, even.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Then, Okay, Are we going to have a sixth year
- 39:56Speaker 1: of only Murders in the Building? Selena uh Martin short
- 40:01Speaker 1: Steve Martin fifth season drop last month, in addition to
- 40:07Speaker 1: more buzzy guest appearances from a listers like Tayo Leoni
- 40:11Speaker 1: Renee Zelweger.
- 40:13Speaker 5: Are they a listeners anymore? Anyway?
- 40:16Speaker 1: Season five saw everyone's favorite podcasters investigating another devastating death
- 40:22Speaker 1: of one of their own, the Doorman Lester. Our beloved
- 40:27Speaker 1: doorman has a hold of a large amount of tenants
- 40:30Speaker 1: in our buildings, Secrets and many other things about his
- 40:33Speaker 1: life were interesting to me, said co creator John Hoffman.
- 40:38Speaker 1: We're really dipping our toe into New York City in
- 40:40Speaker 1: season five. After the season finale wrapped today, fans were
- 40:48Speaker 1: I've seen the first.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Two of season five.
- 40:51Speaker 1: Fans were eager to find out whether the Emmy nominated
- 40:55Speaker 1: series had been renewed for another installment being confirmed yet,
- 41:02Speaker 1: but last year, Hoffman told Variety he'll stick with only
- 41:06Speaker 1: murders in the Building as long as he can. Once
- 41:10Speaker 1: you get over the hump of how many murders can
- 41:12Speaker 1: happen in one building, you're really stepping back and looking. Ultimately,
- 41:16Speaker 1: it's the true original concept which is three lonely people
- 41:20Speaker 1: in New York City, brought together by common interest in
- 41:23Speaker 1: true crime. I mean I do I do like the
- 41:30Speaker 1: Oh yeah you would. They're they're they're they're very good together.
- 41:34Speaker 1: I will say, very good together. And we can only
- 41:38Speaker 1: hope for a season six.
- 41:39Speaker 11: You know, I know who who could who could be
- 41:43Speaker 11: on the next Sea I mean it didn't Meryl Street Finds.
- 41:46Speaker 5: Yeahr Meryl was in there last year. They they brought
- 41:49Speaker 5: in a lot of people.
- 41:51Speaker 11: Yeah, Paul right, Yeah, who else? Yeah, I don't even know.
- 41:54Speaker 11: I'm trying to think what celebrity they could talk like?
- 41:56Speaker 11: Who could they talk by bringing who? Would you be excpt?
- 42:00Speaker 11: I did to see.
- 42:00Speaker 5: Clint Eastwood something.
- 42:09Speaker 1: I don't know why, Plenty Eastwood, you gotta you've got
- 42:14Speaker 1: to murder in this building.
- 42:19Speaker 11: I'll get him.
- 42:23Speaker 1: This is the most powerful handgun known. Demand you got
- 42:27Speaker 1: to ask, I don't know. Do you feel lucky?
- 42:29Speaker 5: Punk?
- 42:31Speaker 11: Do you see Clint Eastwood ever living in an apartment
- 42:34Speaker 11: building though.
- 42:35Speaker 5: In New York? No? No, I do not.
- 42:38Speaker 1: No. Clinton, Clint's the West Coast Eye all the way.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Of course, he owns about half. He owns about half
- 42:43Speaker 1: of California.
- 42:45Speaker 11: Oh you know when you get out of that star power. Yeah,
- 42:50Speaker 11: I guess.
- 42:52Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 42:53Speaker 1: I don't know what made me bring up Clint Eastwood,
- 42:54Speaker 1: but I think that would be awesome.
- 42:56Speaker 5: Clint Eastwood in New York trying to self ammerderr oh,
- 43:00Speaker 5: that'd be awesome. I would love that.
- 43:02Speaker 11: I know. Honestly, sign me up too. He could be
- 43:05Speaker 11: the mysterious guy that no one ever talks about. Disappears
- 43:08Speaker 11: season five.
- 43:09Speaker 5: You know you're welcome. The show just rights itself.
- 43:15Speaker 11: We just helped you. I'll give all the credit.
- 43:18Speaker 5: To Chip though, thank you, thank you.
- 43:23Speaker 11: Moving on this because I know it will probably if
- 43:26Speaker 11: I'm so lucky to get to talk tomorrow, we'll talk
- 43:30Speaker 11: about this just because it's Dances with the Stars, and
- 43:32Speaker 11: you know how I feel about dancing.
- 43:34Speaker 5: You love Dancing with the Stars.
- 43:36Speaker 11: Well, after three years away, I'm surprised it hasn't been
- 43:40Speaker 11: longer than three years because it's spelt longer. Cheryl Burke,
- 43:44Speaker 11: which Chip, do you even know who?
- 43:45Speaker 5: That is? Probably no idea.
- 43:47Speaker 11: It's expecting watter works when she makes her return to
- 43:50Speaker 11: Dancing with the Stars tonight. It is tonight. It's going
- 43:55Speaker 11: to be emotional, it's going to be.
- 43:57Speaker 5: I think for all of us. It's going to be emotional,
- 44:00Speaker 5: don't you.
- 44:01Speaker 11: I mean sure, I don't really care. She was never
- 44:03Speaker 11: one of my favorites. I mean that respectfully. But it
- 44:07Speaker 11: is Halloween night, so I am very excited about that
- 44:09Speaker 11: because I do love Halloween. It's going to be all
- 44:11Speaker 11: the feels. So my makeup artist is going to have
- 44:14Speaker 11: a hard time.
- 44:14Speaker 5: Do you have your outfit?
- 44:18Speaker 11: Hmm? I mean, if I decide to put myself together,
- 44:23Speaker 11: I could be a mom that has her stuff together.
- 44:26Speaker 5: So does Georgia have her outfit?
- 44:29Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 44:29Speaker 11: The thing with her, though, is that she changes her
- 44:32Speaker 11: mind very frequently. So we've got we've got options. We've
- 44:37Speaker 11: got options for Georgia me, I'm just gonna go with
- 44:42Speaker 11: whatever works.
- 44:43Speaker 5: I'm going to tell you.
- 44:45Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you if well, I'm handing out candy,
- 44:49Speaker 1: but but I'm I'm going to be dressed and of
- 44:53Speaker 1: course little ones beware.
- 44:56Speaker 5: That's all I'm going to say.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Yes, oh no again, I'm going to see nope, nope,
- 45:05Speaker 1: I'm going to see how many I can make just
- 45:09Speaker 1: cry like little babies that come to the door. And
- 45:13Speaker 1: that way, wait, that way, yeah, yeah, that way. We
- 45:16Speaker 1: don't have to give us give as much candy away.
- 45:19Speaker 1: I I don't want to give everything away because I've
- 45:22Speaker 1: done this before.
- 45:24Speaker 5: I will just tell you there is a red balloon involved.
- 45:31Speaker 11: I mean that that that gave a lot away.
- 45:33Speaker 5: Spooky Huh.
- 45:35Speaker 11: I was gonna ask if you were bringing the blonde
- 45:37Speaker 11: mullet back out, but I know not.
- 45:40Speaker 1: No, no, this is this is real deal stuff Friday Night.
- 45:46Speaker 5: So come on by people. No, now, I take that back.
- 45:50Speaker 5: I'm not going to tell you where you're not invited. Uh,
- 45:56Speaker 5: this is big news.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Taylor Sheridan is leaving parent out and going to NBC
- 46:02Speaker 1: Universal with a new massive five year deal for films,
- 46:07Speaker 1: TV and streaming. The biggest question is what will happen
- 46:13Speaker 1: to the franchises at Paramount. Sheridan is set to deliver
- 46:18Speaker 1: more seasons of his ongoing hits Yellowstone spinoffs, Dutton Ranch,
- 46:23Speaker 1: The Madison for Paramount plus Why Marshals. When Sheridan does
- 46:29Speaker 1: finally head to NBC Universal, he will have to create
- 46:33Speaker 1: holy new stuff. He won't be making the full leap
- 46:42Speaker 1: for another three years. Well, good grief, why are we
- 46:44Speaker 1: even talking about this?
- 46:45Speaker 5: Now?
- 46:47Speaker 11: We'll talk about this in maybe three years.
- 46:50Speaker 1: Sheridan's close collaborator and producing partner David Glasser is also
- 46:55Speaker 1: making the jump. Glasser signed a first look film and
- 46:59Speaker 1: TV deal with NBC Universal that will begin early next
- 47:03Speaker 1: year after his company fulfills its current obligations to pair amount.
- 47:09Speaker 1: So there you go. This guy, this guy's making a
- 47:14Speaker 1: lot of money. This tenlor sharedan guy team and he
- 47:19Speaker 1: is prolific. My gosh, this guy writes a lot of stuff.
- 47:23Speaker 1: I don't know how he does it, but hey, more
- 47:25Speaker 1: power to him.
- 47:27Speaker 11: There you go.
- 47:28Speaker 1: And I wish he'd leave himself out of his shows.
- 47:31Speaker 1: By the way, he's not nearly as good an actor
- 47:34Speaker 1: as he thinks.
- 47:34Speaker 11: He is. Just a little helpful hint.
- 47:38Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I'm just saying, yeah, I'm sure he's listening.
- 47:44Speaker 11: I'm sure. I mean, why wouldn't you exactly show switching
- 47:49Speaker 11: gears completely? Because I don't know how this would relate
- 47:52Speaker 11: to anything we've already talked about. An aunt of Prince
- 47:54Speaker 11: William and Prince Terry is recovering after a really bad fall.
- 47:58Speaker 7: From her horse.

- 48:34Speaker 11: fall last month and has been in the hospital for
- 48:36Speaker 11: a long time. I think she is She's quite a
- 48:39Speaker 11: handful of a patient because the lead doctor said to
- 48:43Speaker 11: my brother in law, She's quite a character, isn't she,
- 48:47Speaker 11: which I think is code for could you take her home?
- 48:51Speaker 5: Poor Lady Sarah.
