- 0:00Just coffee, first of all, Brianna, very good cold brew.
- 0:02We are recording. We have a guest.
- 0:04What's your double mic situation?
- 0:06Thank you. We're recording for two, 2, two
- 0:08different setups right now. So we got our guy a returning
- 0:12guest. Absolute legend, saddle expert,
- 0:17privilege to bow hunter. Well.
- 0:20Howdy. Happy to be back.
- 0:22Well, happy to be here for the first time.
- 0:23Happy to be back in y'all's presence.
- 0:25Yes, I'm. Very.
- 0:29I couldn't be happier. I had a good time out there in
- 0:32Hawaii. We got successfully got a goat
- 0:35and had a lot of fun shooting at the range, and we're going to
- 0:39actually do some more shooting tomorrow, but this time we're
- 0:43competing 1V1 and indoor. Your first time ever shooting an
- 0:49indoor Vegas round. Yeah, never.
- 0:52Because in like in Hawaii, there is no, the real estate is such
- 0:56at a premium. Yeah, there's no range.
- 0:58There's nowhere with where you can shoot over like 10 yards in
- 1:02Hawaii, like inside, like at least not on Oahu.
- 1:05Yeah, inside. Indoors, right?
- 1:07Yeah, You have that one. Is it still down South?
- 1:10It was like under construction or something when we were there
- 1:12in the summer. It's like, I don't know how to
- 1:15describe it other than it's down on the South.
- 1:17You talking South end of Hawaii? Talking in like a shop.
- 1:20No, it's just a range. It's I think it's more of like a
- 1:23gun range, but they also had archery because I saw when I was
- 1:28working out there, I saw like bags for archery.
- 1:31You know. How to describe It's like across
- 1:33from a beach? Oh, that really narrows it down.
- 1:36I mean, there's. One, if you drive like the east
- 1:38side all the way up like towards if you drive up like Sandy's
- 1:42beach and go past that, there is a rifle range which is also has
- 1:46like a stepchild like archery section.
- 1:50But the wind is crazy. Oh dude, yeah.
- 1:53I bet like it's it's. It was windy out there.
- 1:56It's, I'm not exaggerating. If I had to put like a
- 2:00multiplication factor, it times 3 at least.
- 2:03Really. Yeah.
- 2:04Jesus, Pete. Yeah.
- 2:06So dude, there's a lot we can talk about right now.
- 2:12Well, before we get into it, yeah.
- 2:13Can I just give you guys your flowers like you guys have?
- 2:17Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like a term of a deer.
- 2:20I have. I have.
- 2:22Sheep. There's always give it up stuff
- 2:25like it cut men like it's OK, all right, OK.
- 2:29It's a term of a deer, but got it.
- 2:31I've caught on. I was wondering if that was in
- 2:34the brain the whole time. I don't think so the.
- 2:36Camera. But verbal flowers, right, You
- 2:39guys, you guys been getting after it went from I think when
- 2:43we started talking, you guys were like 10K subscribers over
- 2:47100K. So bravo.
- 2:50Hey, you guys put the battery like I was not on TikTok at all
- 2:54when I met you guys and then when you propose you're like
- 2:58hey, this started printing like instantly on TikTok overnight.
- 3:02I was like why don't I have a TikTok?
- 3:03And then from that point till today it hit probably by the
- 3:07time I leave this trip we're on 14K That's great.
- 3:10So that's literally just because y'all came out to the island.
- 3:13No flowers to y'all. And that's only seven months,
- 3:16right? So think about that.
- 3:17That's that's an average of about 2000 per month from zero
- 3:20and. Instagram doubled because then I
- 3:24was making vertical related, like vertical specific content,
- 3:29not like hey, just trying to crop it in and make it work
- 3:32enough. And so then that doubled as
- 3:33well. Yeah.
- 3:34So, yeah, and, and, and that's what I always suggest to folks
- 3:38is like the more that you can spread your content around to
- 3:44various platforms. I mean, you have 4 big ones that
- 3:47there's no reason you shouldn't be on Facebook, Instagram,
- 3:49TikTok and YouTube. Also Snapchat, that one's tough.
- 3:53I'm having a tough time with it, but I'm still putting stuff on
- 3:56there because I feel as if you are always at risk of getting
- 4:03hacked, getting your account taken down, getting maybe a
- 4:08platform just falls off like Myspace did.
- 4:11But if you have four or five of them built up, now, if you get,
- 4:17say, my Instagram got hacked tomorrow and I no longer have
- 4:20it, I can rebuild it much faster because I have three other
- 4:24platforms built up. Fair.
- 4:26Whereas if that's all of my eggs and then it goes away, you are
- 4:31cooked. So for me, it's actually a
- 4:34security measure. Yeah.
- 4:36And then when you go to brands, and we've been blessed to have
- 4:39some pretty cool sponsors that we work with.
- 4:41But like, brands love it too. You say, hey, look, we have
- 4:45these numbers in five places, not just one, you know, So I
- 4:51think not only is it cool that you've grown the TikTok and
- 4:54doubled the, the the Instagram, but you were already doing
- 4:58YouTube for a long time. You know, I'd seen you on
- 5:01YouTube for, for forever and as like you're crushing it, but now
- 5:05you're have three spots rather than one.
- 5:08It's dope. Yeah, yeah, got a good, a better
- 5:11workflow. I do have to attack YouTube
- 5:14more, I think, because it got TikTok kind of got a little bit
- 5:18more addicting because instant gratification like and then I
- 5:23thought everybody was getting these views.
- 5:25And then so when I started seeing people come, well, you
- 5:27know, you know how it goes. You see if you scroll how to
- 5:29grow, how to grow if you're stuck in 200 view jail this that
- 5:32in a third. And then I'm looking at my views
- 5:35and they're like instantly 10,012 thousand.
- 5:39So then I started putting more momentum into that, but I need
- 5:43to kind of like you said, I need to diversify.
- 5:46I need to keep My Portfolio diversified.
- 5:48How about that? A perfect example, right?
- 5:50Everybody's freaking out this weekend.
- 5:52What happened? Ice Storm, a server on TikTok
- 5:56took it now. And so like you post a video and
- 5:58it's stuck at 0 views for like 2 days.
- 6:01And now everybody's like, oh, what?
- 6:03What do I do now? My only platform is falling
- 6:05apart. So yeah, and it's and it's
- 6:08especially being careful with the newer platforms that aren't
- 6:12proven in a stable. They just went through a cell.
- 6:14So the dude who owns Lanai, Larry Ellison.
- 6:17So if you want to go hunt axis deer, you're on his little
- 6:20island. Like he owns probably 90% of the
- 6:22island. He's the king of Lanai.
- 6:24He owns the only place you can get groceries for other than
- 6:26hunting. He owns the only gas station on
- 6:29on there. Well, he just bought TikTok
- 6:32Oracle, right? Or the, I guess at least the US
- 6:35arm of it. And that merger has been a
- 6:38little shaky. Whereas YouTube is kind of like
- 6:43a oligarch. It's a, it's a monarch.
- 6:45It's it's, it's not going anywhere.
- 6:47I have said this for a long, long time.
- 6:50I am of the belief that you have Netflix and YouTube that are
- 6:57fighting to or basically one of them I think eventually will
- 7:01essentially monopolize the content space because look at
- 7:05you got YouTube that now has YouTube TV that they have for
- 7:09quite some time. YouTube TV is money.
- 7:12I was in that air flying in the national championship last week.
- 7:15YouTube. Right facts.
- 7:17YouTube TV is money, they have movies, they got all sorts of
- 7:22stuff and user generated content which crushes.
- 7:26And then Netflix, you got top tier shows, old shows, live
- 7:30sports, now all sorts of different stuff, documentaries.
- 7:34And I think that each one of them probably if they were to
- 7:38add the other would be that would be it'd be a wrap, right?
- 7:42So I think that's why you're seeing each one of them Add all
- 7:45these different elements till eventually they have it all bro.
- 7:49Could you imagine if Netflix created like a?
- 7:51User generated section. I've been saying forever.
- 7:54I think they should, right? I don't think they will though.
- 7:56I think they're it's kind of like when you say Myspace, like
- 8:01Netflix was the OG to to break the ground into digital TVI
- 8:09guess you could say like they started with the DVDs and red
- 8:12box, then she get the red box DVD at the gas station and then
- 8:16everything got flipped upside down when they went to digital
- 8:19and you no longer had to go pick up a DVD from.
- 8:22That was a wild time that my children don't understand.
- 8:25Yeah. Let's do no way.
- 8:27You actually have to go pick up the like, I go crazy.
- 8:29No blockbuster existed and I got VCRS.
- 8:33Let's be asking kids about. Please rewind what?
- 8:36So true. Rewind it before returning.
- 8:40But they were like the first to do that, at least to my
- 8:43knowledge. Like the others may have been
- 8:45coming around but like Netflix did it.
- 8:47But to me, they're going to be the ones that if any digital
- 8:52platform falls off 1st or gets bought off, it's going to be
- 8:56Netflix because they're so like niched into movie and TV show
- 9:04outside of that. Well, no, not anymore, because
- 9:06they're adding all these live sports.
- 9:08Stuff. So I'm interested to see where
- 9:09that goes though, because like YouTube TV already does that,
- 9:13like Peacock does that, Amazon Prime does that so well, I don't
- 9:20know if Prime does or not. Prime has live sports.
- 9:22You got Thursday Night Football, Yeah.
- 9:24So I see that I don't watch sports.
- 9:26I couldn't tell y'all, but they've already been doing it.
- 9:31So I feel like now Netflix is behind the game as far as the
- 9:35rest of them are, but I think they have those.
- 9:37Netflix would get bought before. Like Amazon Prime's not going
- 9:40anywhere, it's owned by Amazon. YouTube's not going anywhere,
- 9:42it's owned by Google. Like those are the two heaviest
- 9:45hitters. Oh, definitely they're asking to
- 9:47be owned by. So I just think Netflix probably
- 9:50financially wouldn't even have the game to go buy something
- 9:53else. They could keep trying to grow
- 9:56but also this nonsense they put in about X amount of TV's you
- 9:59can be logged into ruined it for me.
- 10:02Ruined Netflix. Yeah, but that was a smart move
- 10:04for them. But my point is, like, I think
- 10:07your idea, I've said that many times, I'm like, what if Netflix
- 10:11had, you know, like a home screen and then at the top of
- 10:16the home screen had like a toggle between like, I don't
- 10:20know what you would call it, like studio created content and
- 10:24a user generated content. And you let people like us who
- 10:27do YouTube, maybe they would accept not accept everybody.
- 10:30Maybe they would. But dude, if you could put user
- 10:33generated content on Netflix and have a whole wing on there or
- 10:37have vice versa on YouTube, have a wing at the top that takes you
- 10:41over and is like all the movies, all the shows, all the stuff.
- 10:45Like I think that would really. And then like a sports 1, like 3
- 10:49sections, sports, you know, high end commercial TV shows and
- 10:54movies and then user generated content.
- 10:57I think the first one to like very cleanly integrate all three
- 11:02of those. Well, it's game over.
- 11:04But to your point, Netflix and YouTube, they're not going
- 11:08anywhere. YouTube is a is a unique
- 11:11platform because it's heavily used by every single age demo.
- 11:16Yeah, kids, teenagers, old people, everybody watches you.
- 11:21And it's the biggest like searching this, Google's number
- 11:24one, right? And then YouTube's the next
- 11:25search engine. And I think I think that's where
- 11:28the great power struggle is, right?
- 11:29Because you think that's where TikTok is trying to take a piece
- 11:32of that pie. They're trying to Even so I
- 11:35could see what I'm getting paid for on TikTok if I put out a how
- 11:39to on TikTok, because let me finish that thought.
- 11:43If I put out a how to on TikTok, it makes a good amount of money,
- 11:47right? Like actually more than YouTube.
- 11:49If I if I have a like successful video on YouTube versus TikTok,
- 11:52I get paid more on TikTok. But it's if it's like something
- 11:57of substance. I think what they did at first
- 12:01was everybody get in post all your just post junk content,
- 12:05just post. That's why you would see
- 12:06everybody. Hey, no, just oh, every time you
- 12:08open up the app just post to now a transition of educational how
- 12:12to something that's like to make them more legitimized.
- 12:16Because before they were just a doom scrolling.
- 12:19Just everybody, yes, flooded and post and post.
- 12:21So I see like so you'll see like a really big creator on TikTok
- 12:26post like TikTok is going to crap.
- 12:30It's not even worth it anymore. And they'll show what they made
- 12:32and they'll have like a million subscribers and I'm at 14 not
- 12:36even. And it'll be the same pay
- 12:38because of they're just they they haven't made the shift from
- 12:43posting, you know, just junk content, you know, rage bait to
- 12:48actually something of substance. And I think it's that it's kind
- 12:51of like Blockbuster and what all these other companies fell
- 12:54victim to. They don't know how to shift
- 12:57when the times change, right, like mastering the shift or
- 13:00mastering change in like capitalizing on it.
- 13:03So that that's what I think is that until your point about
- 13:06Netflix, I think Netflix will be fine because Netflix versus
- 13:11YouTube TV. YouTube TV is expensive.
- 13:14It is. It's like 8090 dollars, Yeah,
- 13:17for I think Netflix you're paying like 20 bucks Max, I
- 13:19think. Yeah.
- 13:21So. And that's for like 2 or 3
- 13:22lines. It's just less barrier to entry
- 13:24to get get on Netflix. On Netflix you don't have again,
- 13:28to my knowledge, but like you don't have the the add-ons.
- 13:33So like Amazon prime, I go there and I find a show I like.
- 13:39Oh, I don't have HBO on my Amazon prime.
- 13:42Let me pay the extra 299 a month.
- 13:44Now. Now there's, you know, ABC or I
- 13:47love what's the the British channel, not PBS BC something I
- 13:56don't know. But anyways it has like old
- 13:57timer show. You watch it black and white
- 14:01too. It's like new shows, but it's
- 14:03everything. Like everything is very old.
- 14:06James knows I love that. But that's another 1499 a month
- 14:11and before you know it, you're 1199.
- 14:12Amazon Prime is now $55 a month or whatever and then Netflix,
- 14:20like you just watch whatever you want on Netflix.
- 14:23You know, it's not like or there's the rent or free version
- 14:26or on Amazon. That's fair.
- 14:28That actually gets on my nerves. I sometimes I'm like, oh, OK,
- 14:32399 month and then you don't realize that you've bought like
- 14:357399 SA month this month. Listen or.
- 14:38And I'm like, you lied to me because what I what what's
- 14:41coming out of my account for this service?
- 14:43I feel like I should have everything on the service but
- 14:45that's not the real you nickel and diamond me like like with
- 14:48like a knock off freaking airline.
- 14:50Yeah, and that and that's the cool part about Netflix is they
- 14:53don't have that on stuff. I mean, it's kind of like
- 14:56whatever is in there is you. Know what you're paying for.
- 14:58Exactly bro. I feel like not just.
- 15:01I'm sorry for the abrupt but I feel like that plaque right
- 15:05there should be here. What are y'all doing right now?
- 15:08Hold on there, Hold. On it's like hidden behind my
- 15:11bow. And I need to touch that before
- 15:13I leave, right? Like I need to.
- 15:15I need to be, yeah, like freshly rejuvenated.
- 15:19You know what? I'll move it.
- 15:20I I agree with you. It's kind of a goofy spot and my
- 15:23bow was not that bow. I didn't even have that bow.
- 15:26So like, I just now hung it out, but but yeah.
- 15:30I will say I wish that they hadn't shrunk the size of it.
- 15:33I just feel like it's the first thing you earn from YouTube, you
- 15:37know? Like it's that plaque.
- 15:39You don't get anything. Oh it.
- 15:40Was bigger before. It used to be a little bigger,
- 15:42not quite double, but it was a lot bigger.
- 15:45If you watch there's because I was looking for like frame ideas
- 15:49or whatnot for like how to display it and a lot of podcast
- 15:53studios will display theirs and like, like it should be, you
- 15:56know, but not that that's for the podcast, but the sun then
- 16:01all the sun and on YouTube pops up like the different, the old
- 16:04verse, the new of that frame. And it was a lot bigger before,
- 16:09which I just feel like it's the first thing you struggled to get
- 16:12to like 100,000 like that's a lot of a lot of time.
- 16:17And then it's smaller. It's like, give me the giant.
- 16:19It's not even the first barrier, though.
- 16:21The first barrier is getting 1000 subscribers, right?
- 16:24And then getting 4000 watch like the video you post.
- 16:27And it's like, I'll be happy if they had 100 views then to give
- 16:31me A to to. I'm bro.
- 16:33When I get to 100K, yeah, I'm going to need you know what?
- 16:36I'm going to make a replica. Thankfully in my job we have a
- 16:40machine shop. Something is going to happen.
- 16:44You'll get one when you hit 100K.
- 16:45Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:46But you know, YouTube, the game changed when Shorts came out.
- 16:51It really changed because getting to 1000 subscribers was
- 16:55no longer hard as hard when that happened.
- 16:58But the watch time was still really tough or, but like before
- 17:02Shorts and it was really hard to get 1000 subscribers at all.
- 17:07Like that was the subscribers was the tough part.
- 17:10Then it became the watch time was the tough part getting
- 17:13subscribers. Subscribers are much easier with
- 17:15shorts as an option. But I think it's great to have
- 17:19shorts and long form content. I think that was a wise move by
- 17:23YouTube and I love to do both. Like I'm proud of our shorts and
- 17:27I'm also proud of our long form videos.
- 17:30You know, I when they first came out, I was like kind of a hater
- 17:34like, oh, why are they doing shorts?
- 17:36Like that's, that's wack. But like, I don't think it is.
- 17:39I think it's smart. You know it's.
- 17:42Smart that both, but I did not right away.
- 17:44I wish I did but. You were pretty close because I
- 17:46remember like a year like, like happened that you gained like it
- 17:50was thousands and thousands and thousands of subscribers and it
- 17:53was in like a month's time span. It was like in late August when
- 17:57you were on an Elk concert and he was no matter what he was
- 18:01still doing, he was either a short or too short. 2A day it
- 18:04was all I could do because there wasn't enough service to upload
- 18:07full length videos so I had never done a short and I told
- 18:11myself all right I can't do the long form and at the time I was
- 18:15posting weekly but now I couldn't post for a month.
- 18:19So I said rather than do nothing when I'm in my tree stand
- 18:22because I was hunting a tree stand a lot, I can at least go
- 18:26watch an old video screen, record sections, cut them on a
- 18:30splice, and then upload shorts. And I'll do that twice a day the
- 18:33whole time I'm here. That's smart.
- 18:35And I want to say, yeah, I think we gained like 20,000 Subs or
- 18:39something. That's.
- 18:40Super smart. We are back after a quick
- 18:42hiatus, a quick break. A bio break.
- 18:44Yeah, it was nice. Union mandated break, you know,
- 18:48government break. But but yeah, man, shoot, I
- 18:54like, I like growing different platforms.
- 18:56That's fun. And archery's fun, you know.
- 18:59And are you still shooting the same setup?
- 19:02Yeah, am I even allowed to do concert anymore?
- 19:06Yeah. You're like tough shoots cause
- 19:09yeah, the lift is a few years old.
- 19:11So I'm like, at what point do I need to buy something else to
- 19:15still be in, like in the cloak, Yeah.
- 19:17Nah, you're good. Do it.
- 19:19It's just like I'm getting close to, I'm getting close to
- 19:23retirement, so and Crystal sending me these houses in
- 19:28Zillow. So it's like I need to, I need
- 19:32to lock in for a second. Yeah, what I'm hoping is, well,
- 19:37we'll go there. Like what I'm hoping is
- 19:38eventually like the income will be like the new bow and stuff
- 19:41like that will be such a drop in the bucket for discretionary
- 19:44income that it it no longer feels irresponsible for me to
- 19:48get a new one every year. And I've always said, dude, I
- 19:50don't think you'd need a new bow every year.
- 19:53I think like every five maybe. But I mean, I dude, before I did
- 19:57archery, you know, more prevalently for my life, dude, I
- 20:02would shoot the same that bow right there, a bow tech
- 20:04experience. I it has a new set of limbs on
- 20:07it, But I mean I haunted with that bow till 20. 18 no probably
- 20:162019. So I haunted with that and it's
- 20:18a 2013 So I haunted with that same bow for like 6 years and I
- 20:22didn't even switch out of it until Bruce from the bow and
- 20:25arrow shop got me into a bow tech SR-350 for like a very good
- 20:31deal. Had he not have done that I
- 20:33would have kept shooting it. So I'm like, dude, like you do
- 20:36not need a new bow every year. Like the technology is so good
- 20:41in the bows now that I always suggest to people, if you, if
- 20:43you don't have a ton of funds or whatever and you're shooting,
- 20:48you know, whatever, a bow that's 15 years old, just go on eBay
- 20:52and buy a flagship that's two years old and you're friggin
- 20:56getting it for so much cheaper. And the technology is basically
- 20:59the exact same or very close to the current flagship.
- 21:03The speeds aren't going to be any different.
- 21:05The brace height, the axle to axle, they don't change all that
- 21:08much. Now if you look at a bow from
- 21:102015 to 2026, then there will be a bigger gap right between the
- 21:17the bow 1510 years later. But every three years, like
- 21:23there's not that big of a gap. I get back into like competing
- 21:27and we'll see. Like we kind of talked about it
- 21:30earlier. I'm a very, very competitive
- 21:32person. That's why like if I start
- 21:34playing, I can't play like Madden or anything because I the
- 21:38the children will be behind you like listening to me talk so
- 21:42much track like as soon because I, my uncles would we would play
- 21:47Madden and they were he would use the middle linebacker and
- 21:50like he everything I would throw, he were intercepted.
- 21:53So I'm like, now I have to get that skill.
- 21:55So when it comes back on and these kids are playing and they
- 21:57start talking trash, like, well, I will give it to a 13 year old.
- 22:02And then, you know, you hurt their feelings because they'll
- 22:04be like, oh, so you, you don't hear arguing with a 13 year old.
- 22:08I'm like, oh, no, no, no, no. You knew you were 13 when you
- 22:10said what you said to me. Yeah, I'm not going to repeat
- 22:13some of the stuff that they have said.
- 22:14But you knew you were 13 and you don't realize, see you these
- 22:18kids don't realize that we grew up like if you walk past the
- 22:22lunch room table and something was a little off on your
- 22:24clothes, you getting roasted. So you had it was like an
- 22:27Olympic sport in my high school to be able to joke back and
- 22:30forth. So they're not, they're just
- 22:32used to saying like outrageous stuff online.
- 22:35And that'd be enough to break somebody down.
- 22:36I'm like, no, no, no, no. We, we went back and forth.
- 22:40And then you had to show up to school the next day.
- 22:42And then there was no hiding. There was no safe space,
- 22:45nothing. All that ran was tough talk
- 22:47about I am very competitive and though I am on this old bow, if
- 22:52I get to Virginia and the competitive juices start flowing
- 22:56and we start shooting and then I'm like I can do a little bit
- 22:59better if this, if that, then who knows that I may be back
- 23:04into the every single year having a bow.
- 23:07That was a long Kanye rant to say that I.
- 23:09Loved it. It makes it easier to add it
- 23:12when just one person talks. So I love it.
- 23:15Yeah, yeah, no, I I, I agree. I'm super competitive.
- 23:21I enjoy competing, but I also love having fun.
- 23:24So I'm one of those guys who I want to win every time.
- 23:27But if I don't and as long like I'm still going to have a good
- 23:30fun like I can shoot terrible. I'll still be in a good mood
- 23:33having having the most fun, but I of course want to always win
- 23:38or do well. I think I think competition is
- 23:41good, especially as long as you're not letting it destroy
- 23:44your whole day. If you're like have a off day or
- 23:47what have you, but we do have a PlayStation one right there, so
- 23:49we could we could mix it up. Dude, you know, PS1 baby, come
- 23:54on. Oh, that's classic.
- 23:56That is a classic dude. That thing might be worth like
- 23:5850 bucks on eBay right now. It's probably more than nourish.
- 24:02Yeah, you might. Yeah, it's freaking got cool
- 24:04stickers. Oh.
- 24:05Wait, hold on, hold on. That was a core memory on lots.
- 24:08Yeah, which one? The little, the freaking memory.
- 24:11Memory. Like, yeah, I wanted a memory.
- 24:13Yo, that's crazy. One MB, one MB, the one MB.
- 24:22And this was expensive, bro. I didn't have one.
- 24:24So like any game that I wanted to beat, I had to try to run
- 24:27through. And so I'm like, I'm delirious,
- 24:30like shutting my brain down, staying up almost two days like
- 24:34a like I'm on meth trying to get into the game because once it's
- 24:37over, it's over so far. Don't turn off the Don't turn
- 24:40off the PlayStation. So fun fact, I I never actually
- 24:44owned video game system growing up until that one, but it was a
- 24:50hand me down from a buddy that like, I want to say maybe he had
- 24:54APS like got the PS2 and then gave or maybe even the three and
- 24:59then gave us that. We're like, yo, we're in
- 25:02business, dude. Like we just weren't gaming.
- 25:05We were growing up bike riding or shooting bows or hunting or
- 25:08playing baseball. And I'm, I'm, I'm stoked on
- 25:12that. Like I never was a gamer, but it
- 25:14is fun every once in a while to fire up the.
- 25:15PS1, it was Friday night for us, yeah, Blockbuster.
- 25:20So Blockbuster on Friday night was you go in there, you get a a
- 25:24movie. Sorry, mom and dad.
- 25:26Mom would be like they'd be like hell, you got this rental fee.
- 25:29Mom's like, I'll put something on it.
- 25:32How much are you going to put on?
- 25:33Can I put 5 bucks on it? 5 bucks on the on the late fee
- 25:36for the video game or whatever was enough so you can walk out
- 25:39the door with whatever game you want it.
- 25:41And then it'd be like popcorn and some pizza and like your
- 25:44friends would be over and that night we'd play that sounds.
- 25:47It'd be the all nighters. That's a nostalgic right there.
- 25:50Core memories about. This once before, maybe it was
- 25:53on a Pod 2 again, maybe when we first introduced PlayStation
- 25:56into the pod room or something. And ours was we had a couple
- 26:00game systems, like we had a PlayStation at some point and
- 26:02then we had an Xbox. And that's other than that,
- 26:04that's all we had. But like, we would go over on
- 26:07like a Friday and it was Guitar Hero because we were band nerds.
- 26:12Guitar Hero was a crazy error. My sister's boyfriend at the
- 26:16time, they had like a a house that had like a little room up
- 26:20above the garage that was like all finished off.
- 26:22So the stairs just went straight up into that room and basically
- 26:26all it had was like a couch in it and then the TV.
- 26:28And so every Friday after school, it was all the band kids
- 26:33went over to that one little room and we just had we had the
- 26:35guitar, we had the drums, we had everything basically just
- 26:39continued band lesson very school and played guitar.
- 26:44Vero. But I did you know, I dabbled in
- 26:47like a a plant. What was is it called duty or
- 26:51no? What's the other Halo?
- 26:54Halo. Halo was a crazy time.
- 26:55I never got into it though. I could like, I was never good
- 26:58enough to do. I just walk around and attempt
- 27:00to shoot things. My favorite game was the the
- 27:03what's that purple dragon? Spyro.
- 27:06Spyro yeah, that was. I love that one.
- 27:09I do. I do enjoy that.
- 27:12And then the one James hasn't let me play yet on there was
- 27:15Tomb Raider. I played Tomb Raider a lot and
- 27:19that was about it. We're really king of the demo
- 27:21that like, you know, you got a game system that came with like
- 27:24a demo back in the it'll be a demo disc and Tomb Raider was on
- 27:27it, but you can only get to like a certain level and then it was
- 27:29over. The the was a Guitar Hero, the
- 27:33band hero, whatever that was like basketball season.
- 27:37So while you're waiting for freshman and JV practice to be
- 27:40over with, like that's what we we go over, we go over to David
- 27:45Gardner. Like my senior year, my point
- 27:47guard was David. He was a freshman, but this dude
- 27:49was, if you're watching, I don't know if you, David Gardner was a
- 27:53freak athlete as like at 14 years old and we are like 200
- 27:58plus pounds and he's in there with us.
- 28:00But at his house he had everything.
- 28:02So between when that bell would ring and instead of going home,
- 28:07we would all get into this place and he was like, this dude could
- 28:10pick up, he picks up anything and he could just play.
- 28:13He had like. That's crazy.
- 28:16He got drafted to the minor leagues like and meet like right
- 28:20after high school. They offered him a Scott.
- 28:22They right out of high school, they offered him a contract and
- 28:26he turned it down to go to Michigan State and then he went
- 28:29on to play. Damn, that's just.
- 28:32Freaky. Some guys add in or gals are
- 28:34just freaking so good and put in the work so they're even
- 28:38freaking just amazing, which is so cool, dude.
- 28:44I don't know. Yeah, it's fun.
- 28:45I like the reminiscing right now.
- 28:46I love it. Yeah, that that memory, that
- 28:48memory card, I liked it when I finally got one, yeah.
- 28:51Well, I think I even got the, I think all that stuff I got when
- 28:54my buddy gave it to us. So it was like his stuff.
- 28:57But I think he had one of those like Gameshark, like cheat code
- 29:01ones too. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it might
- 29:04even be in there, dude. But it was like a thing that
- 29:07went in and it had like all the cheat codes in it.
- 29:10So and then there was a, there was a time when like you, I
- 29:13can't, I remember it was like XXX cheats or something like
- 29:16that. And like all you put in,
- 29:18whatever a game was in it sounds.
- 29:19Like it could be. Very inappropriate, but he's
- 29:22right here. Don't type that in different
- 29:27result than what we got. Exactly.
- 29:30But like what? And.
- 29:31Left, right, left, right, down, up, you know.
- 29:33Pokémon, whatever you're like there was the cheat code for
- 29:37because we would travel a lot because you know, I right, we
- 29:41lived in like 1 city, but then I had to go to school in another
- 29:44city. So that 45 minutes was like Game
- 29:47Boy whatever the cheat right we print out or, or because that
- 29:53printer may or may not be working, we just be hand
- 29:55jamming. It's just right into how cheat
- 29:58goes. Do you remember that?
- 30:00Like having to look up? I never had obviously.
- 30:03Guess whatever that thing is. Yeah, apparently wasn't cool
- 30:06enough. But I do remember looking up
- 30:09codes where it was like, you know, like the up, up, up, left,
- 30:12left, down, right. And then all of a sudden the
- 30:14code, you know, like pops up on the screen like a little notice
- 30:17and then. What a vintage era dude.
- 30:19Such a fun era. I feel like we got the best of
- 30:22everything because we were around before social media, then
- 30:25we seen social media and we played outside and our like.
- 30:29A lot of beginning video games, like with the game boys, the
- 30:32Sega genesis, the PlayStation one, like the just the vibes
- 30:36dude, like we're really was great.
- 30:39I think peak times pre cell phone, but like getting in a
- 30:43cell phone like right when they were sort of coming out, like
- 30:48yeah, I mean you got to live the pre cell phone life for a little
- 30:51and then like adapt with the change life.
- 30:55Till like 9th or 10th grade. I didn't get AI, didn't get a
- 30:57phone till 8th grade because and the only reason I got one then
- 31:00was I was riding my bike from school to my buddy Ryan
- 31:04Hawkett's house which was pretty far.
- 31:06It was like through most of Poway and my parents just for
- 31:11safety wanted me to have a flip phone.
- 31:12So I had a, you know, flip. Their smartphones weren't out
- 31:16yet until 2006. No, I had a Verizon, I think a
- 31:20Motorola flip phone was my first one.
- 31:22And then I had that NV 2 for a while.
- 31:24The one that folded like this with the keyboard inside that
- 31:28one was asked but. I had a hand me down Nextel
- 31:31from. Ohh Nextel was hard.
- 31:33So if I had that first, I think that.
- 31:34The Walkie-talkie 1. Yeah, Yeah.
- 31:36That was like the the actual point.
- 31:38So there was Boost Mobile and then Nextel, right.
- 31:40Boost Mobile was the prepaid and I think Nextel was the like if
- 31:43you have a plan. Yeah.
- 31:45I don't I think I got that. That was my second phone, which
- 31:48was a hand me down from my mom, but my first one was a Nokia.
- 31:53But you know, I was like it literally looked like the phones
- 31:55you had at home that you like pick up on block, you know, but
- 31:59like we're wireless, but it was like a block.
- 32:02It was like this big and I think I remember sticking with a
- 32:05butterfly 3D sticker on the back and I had that for a long time.
- 32:10All those stickers were crazy too, that you'd go to the little
- 32:13machine and it would like spit out the different holographic
- 32:16stickers like the. Foamy holographic ones.
- 32:19Remember the machines You go put your like two?
- 32:21Yeah, that pops out a sticker. Oh, I remember.
- 32:24Yeah. Every diner.
- 32:25Yeah, or the little things that you would like throw out and
- 32:28there was like a hand that would stick to the come on now in the
- 32:31little balls. My brother and sister in the
- 32:34face with it like. Like a whip, even the phones,
- 32:37like you could leap. Like if you dropped your phone
- 32:40and you left it under your bed and you came back a week later,
- 32:43it still was, like, fully charged.
- 32:44Yeah, like just. They weren't, they weren't like
- 32:47probably roaming and stuff didn't take any data and like,
- 32:52yeah, different times. But I agree.
- 32:53I think that it, well, one, I agree it was a really nice era.
- 32:57Like people kind of in our generation live through, but #2
- 33:03like, we probably lived through, like, the most drastic world
- 33:09change in a fast period of time of almost any time period
- 33:13because, like, the whole world completely changed from like,
- 33:1819, like 2000 to by the time you're in 2008, completely
- 33:24different. Yeah.
- 33:25Because the iPhone, the iPhone changed everything.
- 33:28Yeah, the iPhone is what really changed everything.
- 33:31Well, and like fast note, like I don't know what it's called, but
- 33:34like regular Internet, that is what I call it now.
- 33:37But like diet, there was no. Oh yeah, dial up.
- 33:40Was lucky. Dial up was AT dial up.
- 33:43And then dial up went regular Internet.
- 33:46So like be sure, like you could say like my grandparents time
- 33:49where like grandma went from having, you know, electricity
- 33:53was a thing, but like they didn't have microwaves, you
- 33:55know, or whatever, like appliances start freezers, you
- 34:01know, like things like that. Like those are big changes.
- 34:04But then and I'm sure they were big to them, but to go like from
- 34:11using a yellow books to look up something.
- 34:15That would. Be dropped.
- 34:17Or dialing 411 and getting that charge and your parents be so
- 34:21mad, right? To, you know, typing it in on
- 34:24the cell phone. Completely different, you know.
- 34:27The world, everything moved faster in a very short period of
- 34:30time. Totally.
- 34:32Yeah. It was like a drastic, drastic
- 34:34change and like, you know, now we're kind of going through
- 34:37something again with the, you know, AI become more prevalent,
- 34:40ChatGPT and all these other forms of AI.
- 34:44And I just think about how much different, you know, things like
- 34:47the job market and, you know, access to information will be in
- 34:53like 10 years from now, bro. It's going to like, I don't know
- 34:56what's going to happen That's. Why I think our generation is is
- 34:59kind of goaded because like because you had to write out the
- 35:04codes, the cheat codes for your video game.
- 35:07You can appreciate how fast you can get information like or how
- 35:11fast products can be made with with AI.
- 35:14But you, I feel like our generation uses it to be more
- 35:17like present with with people versus just immersed in
- 35:21technology. For instance, like some of those
- 35:24menial tasks that I have to do at work, I'm not like using AI
- 35:28just so I can do those tasks and then go home.
- 35:30I'm using them so I can knock out those tasks and then get
- 35:32back to what really matters is like the people that I work
- 35:35with, how do I help their lives? Do they have family issues?
- 35:39Is something wrong with their pay?
- 35:40Like now instead of being stuck in the office doing all this
- 35:44paperwork, now I can like be out actually helping.
- 35:47And then it stops a lot of mistakes that people would make.
- 35:51Well, I'm a electronics technician.
- 35:53I've been doing it for almost 20 years.
- 35:55So the kid who's out there who would never really see me
- 35:59working because I'm buried behind that man.
- 36:00Now I can get that done. Now I can train this person and
- 36:03they may even like they make a, a step faster.
- 36:06So it's our generation. We we've seen both sides of it
- 36:12to appreciate and use it where sometimes I see this generation,
- 36:17they just, it just makes them more enthralled with, with the
- 36:20technology and less connective. It was weird like getting on
- 36:23that elevator doing, you know, COVID time.
- 36:26You get on the elevator and people won't look at you and
- 36:29won't say hi. And I make you say hi.
- 36:31Like I'm going to make it nice and awkward on that elevator.
- 36:35I'm going to look at my watch and I'm going to see if it's
- 36:37morning or afternoon and I'm going to say good morning and
- 36:40I'm going to stare at you until you say it back.
- 36:44Dude, I felt. I felt, I felt like I was in the
- 36:48early 2000s today. Let me tell you why.
- 36:51I had an appointment this morning at my orthodontist,
- 36:54right? And I haven't been in 10 years.
- 36:56So I go in there and they and they do the old school
- 36:59impression up in my mouth. Yeah.
- 37:01I mean, I felt like I was 13 again in that.
- 37:04Hair, Did you have braces before?
- 37:06Is this a check or something? No.
- 37:07So well, yeah, I did have braces for a couple years, but then
- 37:11like I had I still wear retainers to this day and my top
- 37:14one broke so I got I got a rebuilt for $400.00 the.
- 37:20Clear ones you don't notice. No, they're the wires and stuff.
- 37:24But they say nothing. I felt so.
- 37:26I felt like a little kid again in the chair.
- 37:28Dude, you know I'm way too big. For it did.
- 37:31They give you a toothbrush bag before you left.
- 37:33No, but they let me piss my girl and they let me pick my color
- 37:37and everything, you know what I mean?
- 37:38I chose the same color. Red sparkles.
- 37:41So it's so vintage, bro. But yeah, I love it, man.
- 37:45I like, I like that. I just like the retro.
- 37:48Like I, I call it retro now, but like, I love that late 90s,
- 37:52early 2000s, that's like my favorite, you know, I guess like
- 37:56decor or vibe or feel, you know what I mean?
- 37:59Like I just love it. Action sports being huge and
- 38:03like drinking mountain dews and like, you know what I'm saying
- 38:07like. Watching ESPN extreme sports
- 38:10back in the everything, everything.
- 38:12How about friggin you know, why am I drawing a blank on it
- 38:19Jackass and CBK and like people just doing fear factor, like
- 38:25just the white early Joe Rogan white people.
- 38:28It was such white folk content. You know, the disguise breaking
- 38:32themselves off for no reason. But it was so entertaining, bro.
- 38:35But the playground was the best. Was a picture a mirror of that?
- 38:39Like, I can't imagine, and I probably need to get over this,
- 38:44but I didn't think much like the the what was the thing, The
- 38:47merry go round. Yeah, the most horrific
- 38:49accidents happened on the merry go round because you get to
- 38:53like, there'll be a group of you on there and like 5 people who
- 38:56just had strength and stamina will be outside of it just
- 38:58whipping that thing around. And then one person would get
- 39:01too scared and they would be yelling stop, but nobody can
- 39:04hear them over all the screams of the other children cheering.
- 39:07And then they would try to bail out.
- 39:09And when they would try to bail out, that foot would get
- 39:12clipped. And then you want to.
- 39:13Oh my God, dude. I think it was just a great era
- 39:17because it was 1 where there was just enough technology that you
- 39:23could learn how to use it did use it, enjoyed it, but you also
- 39:30like I would have AI had the little, you know, clear or
- 39:33purple clearish Game Boy thing. But no, Nintendo maybe is what
- 39:38it was. I don't know what that there
- 39:40was. There was a bunch of gameboy
- 39:42but. That, but I still owned a pair
- 39:45of roller skates you know, and I would go outside with my I'm.
- 39:49All jacked up from roller skates.
- 39:51I had rollerblades you know that the in like line Shields
- 39:55underneath now kids only ride on 4 kids skates that's.
- 39:58Cool, that's like the 80s vibrate seventies 80s vibe.
- 40:01Yeah, I had. Rollerblades.
- 40:03Blades are cool. Yeah, they were black with
- 40:06purple latches on. Yeah, I had a skateboard error.
- 40:10I tried it. That's the one sport I'm
- 40:12terrible at, skateboarding. My like my wrist is still jacked
- 40:16up just from because they, they built a skateboard park across
- 40:20the street from my apartment complex.
- 40:22So we lived there for a minute and it got what?
- 40:25And the problem was like, I didn't realize that there were
- 40:28certain trucks that you need, especially like if you're
- 40:30bigger. So I'm like on a Walmart board,
- 40:34try to drop, try to drop it to a bowl.
- 40:37Yeah, dude. That's insane.
- 40:40You laugh but you think he bubbles and dude that's insane
- 40:46dude. Shout out to Chris Jocelyn.
- 40:48Just Trey flip Del Toro legendary skate spot, you know,
- 40:5220 stairs. You can't skate it anymore
- 40:55though after that's the last one.
- 40:57But still, I was very impressed by it.
- 40:59I felt I felt like I was watching 2000s content when I
- 41:03saw the clip. I could never do that.
- 41:05That was cool enough to like. I love that for a ride my
- 41:07bicycle without like holding the steering wheel.
- 41:12The handlebars. The handlebar.
- 41:13Yeah, that, that's the the most. You try to jump now a little
- 41:17bit, yeah. I'm, I've, you know, I got to
- 41:19get back on the bike, but it's, it's like there's just a
- 41:26certain, like 1, I think boys come with inherently less fear
- 41:30factor that women have built into them somehow.
- 41:34And two, if you don't like do that growing up, like the
- 41:39outdoors, like stuff like bicycles or skateboarding or
- 41:44trick stuff, you know, like you're just to then try to do it
- 41:49as an adult. Listen, there's just so much
- 41:52more fear involved to break my ankle, my wrist.
- 41:57And it's because it takes a long time to heal.
- 41:59Like it. I'm looking at, like I look at
- 42:03folks, Joe Rogan got a lot of people gassed up to start
- 42:07jujitsu at a later age. But you got to realize Joe Rogan
- 42:12is going to he, he can go and get stem cells and he can go and
- 42:16get this, he can go and get peptides.
- 42:18He can, he will be back up and running faster than you will.
- 42:21So you think? What is an adult?
- 42:25You know what pain feels. Like.
- 42:27Oh my God. So like as the kid, if you're
- 42:29doing it and you're getting accustomed to it and whatnot,
- 42:32and you're realizing like that fall hurt a little bit more than
- 42:35the last time, Oop, that one broke my wrist.
- 42:36Like now I know what breaking my wrist feels like.
- 42:38You know, I've never broken a bone in my entire body and my
- 42:41whole. I got all types of hardware in
- 42:43my body. Yes, I've broken waters a lot.
- 42:46I've. Broken, no bones.
- 42:48And I want to keep it that way. It's a proud statistic I now own
- 42:52at 34. So it's like every time I ride
- 42:54down the hill on the bicycle, I'm like, as I go to approach
- 42:58the hill and I'm like, OK, brakes, I just put the stop on
- 43:01because I know that means I'm not going to break a bone.
- 43:04It's just it's better to do it younger and get used to it and
- 43:10not be so scared of things. Like I'm a proud believer now,
- 43:14like a baby should own a once again that bike Strider at six
- 43:18months old and get them going and and learn and have one just
- 43:22mobility and like dexterity and balance all those things if an
- 43:28adult or a child can get it. It's amazing.
- 43:31As possible. You know, it really is amazing
- 43:33no one thought of like the concept of a strider earlier on.
- 43:37Like they've only really been around, I don't know, maybe 10
- 43:39years. And it's like, it's such a
- 43:42better way to learn how to ride a bike.
- 43:44I remember first time riding a bike without training wheels bro
- 43:47was so scary. You're like, and you had to
- 43:50pedal the Now kids don't even use training wheels ever because
- 43:53they're so used to the Strider and their balance is so what's
- 43:56the Strider? Basically it's a bike with no
- 43:58pedals and kids just like sit on it and like run with their legs.
- 44:02But then they can coast and learn how to balance.
- 44:05So by then, by the time you put them on a real bike, they
- 44:08already know how to. Balance.
- 44:12We're going to be cooked, so let's go ahead and wrap up the
- 44:15podcast after this .0. God, we didn't talk about like,
- 44:18anything. Really, you might have to do it.
- 44:20We might have to do Part 2. Well, we might have to talk
- 44:23about some. Yeah, we could always do that.
- 44:25I was like, we do need to talk about some saddle stuff here
- 44:27because it brought up a story. My mom got Brittany and.
- 44:30Finished this point real quick. Anyways, the strider starts as
- 44:33like you remember Batten day when you had like a sea, a saw
- 44:36horse or what's called the saw horsey is what I call it.
- 44:41But anyways, it was like, it's it's like this, you know, and
- 44:43you just pawn it like this. That's how the Strider stunts is
- 44:47just like the kid can touch the ground and it just rocks back
- 44:50and forth. And then eventually you take
- 44:51that part off and like, like they just ride with their feet
- 44:55on the ground. There's no pedals and then the
- 44:58pedals come on and like it just builds you through every step of
- 45:01feeling like sitting and you know, balance and whatnot.
- 45:05I. Think you should have to feel
- 45:06stressed like I don't think yeah I don't think you should get the
- 45:10gradual ramp up I got faceless I think 2 wheels listen I.
- 45:14Kind of. I sort of like it, though I do
- 45:16jump. Yeah, get jump, get in there.
- 45:18Yeah, Take the training wheels off and go.
- 45:20You want to ride the bike? Listen, when the training wheel
- 45:23breaks, that's when your transition time is.
- 45:25You get when I drive home from work and you're 1 training hill
- 45:28wheels leaning up like this, like that's your strider, that's
- 45:31what you in my house, So that's all you got.
- 45:35My daughter was like, is it my destiny to ride today like they
- 45:39whatever Princess movie turned in in?
- 45:41So now, like everything, is it my destiny to do this today?
- 45:45And like it only took her a week from from training wheels to no
- 45:49training wheels. And it's like I put rules down.
- 45:52Hey, don't do this until I come home.
- 45:53I come home. You riding a bike around the.
- 45:56You got it. Ain't going to stop her once she
- 45:58got those wheels going man Well I'll tell you what here's here's
- 46:03what we're going to do. I have an idea OK this mic is
