- 1:59today is the opening day of the thing we do I guess maybe a
- 2:04couple times a year. It's called we call a WV bargains dot com.
- 2:07And what happens is that's a website, wv bargains dot com. You log
- 2:10onto that website and the auctions just went live this morning. There are a
- 2:15ton of things on there, like things you wouldn't wouldn't believe, I mean,
- 2:20just odds and ends and special packages and all kinds of stuff on their
- 2:24WV bargains dot com. And you literally you literally bid on those and those
- 2:30things can be in your home or you can take them and take them go
- 2:31on a trip or whatever they are. And Dale Cooper is going to the
- 2:36boss is actually going to stop by the studio to talk about that as well.
- 2:38Plus is always your calls antext are welcome. Bit slow going this morning
- 2:44if you drive it in from I sixty four, if you're drive an I
- 2:46sixty four, there was a three car pile up during the seven o'clock hour
- 2:51seven to seven fifteen or so this morning, and it really got traffic snarled.
- 2:54I know, I ended up taking ROOT sixty in this morning. Not
- 2:58so sure that was much better better, but it's still kind of slow going
- 3:01out there, and no, no weather related issues or anything like that other
- 3:06than me and cold. It's just we call it I sixty four life.
- 3:09So so I just know that traffic is still slow going in some areas this
- 3:14morning. If you are traveling, be careful and allow yourself a little extra
- 3:16time to get there. Rich the realtor my buddy rich Klein, who he
- 3:22and I travel those I sixty four roads together. A whole lot is with
- 3:24it's right now, Richard, good morning, How are you morning? How
- 3:28are you? Thanks for the heads up on that topic this morning. I
- 3:30well, you know, first animal you know are from resissrotation, the mountain
- 3:35animal texts me this morning, said, hey, you may want to take
- 3:38a look at this before you come in. Of course I always check the
- 3:39traffic, you know, before I go in the morning anyway, and so
- 3:42I knew you were coming in, so I gave you a quick call this
- 3:45morning, said you may want to either phone this one in or you may
- 3:47want to leave a little better. But but you made it. I appreciate
- 3:51you being here. Yeah, it had gotten a little better by the time
- 3:53that I made the drive between the eight and eight thirty. It wasn't as
- 3:55bad, but still got some congestion up. Yeah, yeah, and that's
- 4:00it kind of takes a while to catch up on that sometime. By the
- 4:02way, it just got a text for somebody here who just said that sixty
- 4:05four is completely clear now, So there you go. Thanks for the live
- 4:09update for now. Yeah, because that changes on a regular But I was
- 4:12driving Listen, I'm not here to talk about traffic, but I was driving
- 4:15home later last and later by my schedule, which you know is after six
- 4:19last night, and on I sixty four westbound near the near the Nitro exit,
- 4:27traffic was backed up for and I don't know why. I mean then
- 4:30you know that obviously the construction is continuing and we got about another year and
- 4:34a few months to go on that, but it was backed up. I
- 4:38was I set for thirty minutes and I settled this moment. Don't know why
- 4:42it was. That was around seven thirty eight o'clock or so last night.
- 4:46One of those things. We can't do anything about the traffic, but we
- 4:47can't talk about real estate. That's why we bring our good friend Rich into
- 4:53talk with us once a month or so, just talk about some things going
- 4:55on in real estate here in the Kanaw Valley. Someone Rich asked me to
- 4:58ask you this. Let's say my wife and I are going to sell our
- 5:04house. Let me clarify were not. And I say that because with the
- 5:08run of houses right now on Putnam County. If you if you say we're
- 5:11thinking about it, you have ten thousand phone calls. I've got a sign
- 5:15in my yard. I'll put it in your in my car, I'll put
- 5:17it in your yard. No it's not it's not at all. But trust
- 5:21me, our next move is retirement or downsizing. I'm not looking to move
- 5:26anytime soon. But let's say someone is looking. What are some of the
- 5:30things that before that I should think about before I decided to reach out to
- 5:36reach out to reach the realtor what are some of the things I should think
- 5:40about. Yeah, you know, this is a good question, and I
- 5:43think to take a little bit of the anxiety out of the process for potential
- 5:46sellers, is there are some things you should put your head around. And
- 5:51I always say just realistic expectations are probably the best thing to where to start.
- 5:56Like, you know, how long is it going to take to sell
- 5:57your house? Do you need to do anything to it that are major repairs
- 6:00or what can you expect with that, But I'd want to get your get
- 6:03your hands on your deed and see who's authorized to sell it. Are you
- 6:06selling it just because it's your house and you want to sell, or some
- 6:11other folks are selling because you know, I loved ones passed away or something,
- 6:14and there's a will involved, and then you know, is there a
- 6:16writer survivalship on the deed or sorry on the will. That kind of stuff
- 6:20has to be kind of thought through. The realtor should be helping you with
- 6:24that to make sure they're asking all those good questions. But I would encourage
- 6:29sellers to just have a realistic, realistic expectation around what their house is worth.
- 6:32You know, and we have so many websites out there where you and
- 6:35I won't call them all out in one of them rhymes with willow, and
- 6:40they have those, you know, estimates that are out there what your house
- 6:44is worth. And you know, there's nobody from that website going to walk
- 6:46into your house and give you a fair appraisal or an evaluation of what your
- 6:51you know, what your features are, what your updates are. So I
- 6:55just caution sellers to get you know, have that in their head that that's
- 7:00what that website said, when your professional realtor comes in and takes a look
- 7:03around and looks at all your fee, there's a lot more that goes into
- 7:05it. There's a lot more than goes into it. You know where those
- 7:09those websites are using algorithms based on you know, just community or within a
- 7:14half mile, within a mile, and you could have a you know,
- 7:16a mobile home park within a half mile of you that could affect your your
- 7:21value. Or you know, your neighbor down the streets sold for a higher
- 7:25amount, but they they updated their kitchen and updated their baths and you did
- 7:29not. So you can't just loop all that together. Yeah, and that's
- 7:31one of the things. And here's the thing, rich. You know,
- 7:32we live in an internet world and we have for some time. And I'll
- 7:36give it a good example along the same same lines. My brother in law's
- 7:40in the car business, and he talks about from time to time how today's
- 7:43car buyer is nothing like the car buyer twenty five to thirty years ago.
- 7:46You know though a lot of times people show up on the lot the dealership
- 7:49where he works and say, look, you know, as a buyer,
- 7:54i'm trading in my fill in blank here for and this is what I want.
- 7:59Here's what my car worth, here's a cost of new vehicle I'm buying,
- 8:01here's the deal, and I'll start to paperwork. It doesn't work that
- 8:05way in the car business, and it doesn't work that way in the real
- 8:07estate business either, rich because again, there are so many variables that you
- 8:11can't get from a website that's correct and uh and you know, bringing to
- 8:16parents along, I always think it's a good idea, but sometimes they're still
- 8:18in that mind. They haven't bought a house in twenty years, and they're
- 8:22still believing that you can go in and with different expectations. And so I
- 8:26would, you know, just to start off the process, I would tell
- 8:28you to have a you know, kind of a good conversation with yourself and
- 8:31your if there's somebody else in the house that's you know, you know,
- 8:35authorized to selling, you guys are going to talk about what it really looks
- 8:37like and be realistic about it so that there are no disappointments. But they're
- 8:41also really you know, it's just easier to meet those expectations when they are
- 8:45realistic. Dave Allen Schilling five eighty Live is brought to you part by a

- 9:07All right, so rich. So the age old question is why should
- 9:11someone use a realtor when they can just do it themselves, especially in today's
- 9:15modern air Why? Yes? Why? Why? You know? You need?
- 9:20You need a professional in the gap to navigate all of this, all
- 9:22of this this information that's coming and to keep you on track. They can
- 9:28save you lots of time and lots of money based on their power and their
- 9:33ability to negotiate the you know, the the inspections and get you to a
- 9:37closing. That used to be. I don't know that this stat is exactly
- 9:39howcurate right now, but it used to be that eighty percent of homes that
- 9:41were sold by the sell of themselves, sold by owner did not make it
- 9:46to closing. So realtors can get involved in that and help steer through that
- 9:50process. And it's getting through inspections and appraisals and just those kinds of things
- 9:54that help. And you know, we know, we know where to go,
- 9:58we know how to help you. We're worth every dollar. Well,
- 10:01most of us are out there. I've said this before and I'm not shy
- 10:05about that that all reeltors are not the same, you know, but you
- 10:09need to get somebody professional involved to help you and take that stress away from
- 10:13you. Well, how is the market right now in the Putnham County area
- 10:16where you now live, or really you serve the entire Kanaal Valley and we're
- 10:20everywhere. But I mean, how's the overall market in this part of the
- 10:22state looking right now? Yeah, and it's been slower in the last couple
- 10:24of months. It's definitely slowed. I think some of the rate hikes have
- 10:28caught up the folks. But this is traditionally the time of year where things
- 10:31just slow down anyway, So you kind of couple those things together. The
- 10:35inventory has not improved, so it does look like the rates are coming back
- 10:39a little bit, so you know, you could certainly talk to a lender
- 10:43about that. I think they're under eight now, maybe closer to seven and
- 10:46a half, which is helpful. But it's funny that I just heard of
- 10:48commercials talked about the rates are going to the REFI loans. I think it
- 10:52was right before we came on the air of the refi loans or the applications
- 10:56for refis have gone down. Well, of course they have refinance you're talking
- 10:58about, Yeah, sorry, the refinancial loans. So but yeah, it's
- 11:03just it's been a little slower the last couple of months, but typically maybe
- 11:07or a mid February or so, it'll start to gain some traction and get
- 11:13into the selling season for the for the spring, and we just need more
- 11:16homes. We need, we need more in Putnam County. And look again,
- 11:20I spent a lot of time talking about that because it's where I live,
- 11:24but I'm in the Kanau Valley as well. But I was in another
- 11:28cows in Jackson County last night, and and I was talking to some folks
- 11:31in Ripley. They're saying the same thing, and it's because of there.
- 11:35They've got Berkshire Hathaway coming in. They're going to see some some new core
- 11:39and they were telling this story in this gathering. I was in last night
- 11:43that when when the aluminum plants, the kais are aluminum in those ravens,
- 11:46would you know when they when they when those first came into being, that
- 11:50they really weren't prepared in the community because so many people came to town at
- 11:54one time. And luckily what's happening is it's going to be a little bit
- 11:58more staggered, I guess when people come in. But we're already seeing people
- 12:03that are going into Putnam County. We're both you and I live right now
- 12:07directly related to New Core, and there's just not enough houses. Yeah,
- 12:11I mean, it's a good problem to have, I guess in theory.
- 12:15But well, if you're listening, go build some houses, Go build some
- 12:18houses, because if you're I mean, it is a good problem to have,
- 12:20But not when there's not a you know, there's nothing on the horizons
- 12:24to have them start building those homes. You know. So well, there's
- 12:28lots of land that's still available, with lots of land listings are on the
- 12:31MLS that developers can snag up and and you know, put some houses in
- 12:35and then there are a few, but it's just nowhere close to the demand
- 12:37that we need. Well, if you need somebody to serve as your real
- 12:41estate agents, this is the best in business right here. Rich the realtor

- 16:34What's going on? How you doing, Dave? I'm doing fine,
- 16:37buddy. Once I finally got here this morning, Oh yeah, I know
- 16:41a lot of great crazy uh uh traffic. I always get caught right in
- 16:45front of the school, of course, and this morning, for some reason,
- 16:47it was worse than it has been as of late. So I had
- 16:49a set through like six light cycles. By the time you get like three
- 16:52and you're like, are you kidding me? You're starting to regret that last
- 16:56cup of coffee you had before you Yeah, that, And then I started
- 16:57thinking, well, maybe I should have taken the South Side from mccuorkel or
- 17:02walk whatever walked, Yeah, you know, taking a helicopter in something along
- 17:04those. The reason I want to have you stopped by today. We kicked
- 17:07off the thing or I guess. It went live earlier today and we call
- 17:11it West Virginia Bargains and we've done this over the years, used to call
- 17:15turtle bids for various forms. I remember turtle bids well before I came to
- 17:18work here, and it's a very popular thing explain to the people. Of
- 17:22course, First of all starts at the website wd bargains dot com. Uh,
- 17:26there's a ton of things on there that people can bid on. It's
- 17:32like a three day event and I was looking at in the list. You
- 17:37know, it's being updated as we speak. There are just a ton of
- 17:40really really cool prize not really prizes because you're buying them, but I mean
- 17:44things that people can bid on at unbelievably low prices. Sometimes. What really
- 17:48gets me about this and for those of you that have participated or have heard
- 17:51the commercials over the years, that things are a little bit different. We
- 17:52did launch this morning, however, the bidding periods only three days now.
- 17:56We've done it for weeks in the past. Yes, And also there's now
- 18:00buy it now option. If you're familiar with eBay or other auction sites,
- 18:03it kind of mirrors that, so you can go and see what the butt
- 18:04now price is for some of these for some of these things that are on
- 18:08there, So that's something to keep in mind. It's only a three day
- 18:11window that we have right now, so everything that's live this morning, the
- 18:12bidding period is only going to be three days, so you want to be
- 18:15aware of that. And then also if it's something that you really want,
- 18:18you can check it out at the bot now optioning, you can go and
- 18:21get it. And most of these things are sixty to sixty five percent off.
- 18:25And in these times of inflation, inflationary period where we've been dealing with
- 18:30that for years now, you can look ahead a little bit if you plan
- 18:33some and if there's things you need to do, there's a lot of bargains
- 18:37that can be had. As the name suggests, there's a lot of bargains
- 18:38that can be had at w B bargains. First and foremost, we need
- 18:41to pull our resources, we need to get our lunch money together. That
- 18:45for about a week or so, I think is all we would have to
- 18:48say. Because there is a fire truck for sale, a nineteen eighty one
- 18:52GMC fire truck that's for sale, a legitimate fire truck. This is not
- 18:55a talk of truck, no no, h it's a real fire This is
- 18:57a real fire truck. I think the bed for it now is like sixty
- 19:00seven hundred. The buy it now is ten thousand. I think it retails
- 19:07for like seventeen thousand or something like that. We hear me out, you
- 19:11and I, we get our lunch money together, we put it, we
- 19:12put it in the kitty. At the end of the week, we make
- 19:15our final bid on this thing, because that will at least be like twenty
- 19:17five grand, you know, with our lunch money. And so we win
- 19:21this fire truck and then we just slap your face on the side of it.
- 19:23It's like the Dave Allen fire truck or the five Dave Allen Show on
- 19:26five eighty love fire truck. We just put your face on it everywhere after
- 19:30the show. You can drive it downtown Charleston and you know, I don't
- 19:33know, like throw hot dogs out of it or something like that. I
- 19:36mean, this seems like it's a winning deal to me. When I first
- 19:40heard that, and somebody upstairs, one of the sales weasels, pointed that
- 19:42out to me and said something about there being a fire truck out here.
- 19:45I'm thinking again, Okay, like a cast iron type. Now, No,
- 19:48it's a legitimate fire truck that you can bid on. And you know
- 19:52I've said before that we have all these wonderful vehicles out here in the parking
- 19:56lot, you know from all of our sister stations. Sure we don't have
- 19:59a five A. We don't vehicle. Don't talking about that either. I'm
- 20:03telling you a fire truck. You know, the first time that there was
- 20:07a fire truck and on, so maybe this is the same one. Actually
- 20:11there was one in Huntington in a while back. Like that was my proposal
- 20:14is that we should get it for HS. Actually is for hotline, you
- 20:17know, hotline fire. I figured we could tie it in and you know,
- 20:19we could figure it and talking about like throwing hot dogs from it.
- 20:22That would fit on our lane perfectly, because that's pretty much that's pretty much
- 20:26what we do. But in all seriousness, there's things there like if you're
- 20:29just looking, like if you go to a gym membership already or you're looking
- 20:33to get a gym membership, you can go and get a YMCA membership right
- 20:37now for a year. I think the current breds like one hundred and twenty
- 20:40two dollars or something like that. You can get it for for literally sixty
- 20:42percent off of what you would normally pay for it. If you're somebody that
- 20:47goes to Waves of Fun during the during the summer and it's something you usually
- 20:51get your kid a yearly passed for or something like that, again, you
- 20:53can go to the site now get that for sixty sixty five percent off it.
- 20:56You may not be using it tomorrow, but it's something you're going to
- 20:59pay for this summer anywy, so why not get it now. There's limousine
- 21:02services, so you know it may not be prom season right now, but
- 21:03proms right around the corner. You might want to have a three hour limousine
- 21:07service that that's at the site now that you can get here locally for sixty
- 21:11to sixty five percent off. There's tons of stuff over there. You go
- 21:15to WV Bargains and you can go to Charleston to see all the things that
- 21:18are local. But don't be afraid to shop around at the other areas either,
- 21:22because you can still make bids on them. You might have to range
- 21:23to pick it up if you get like a skid out of Martinsburg or something.
- 21:26I mean, you might have to arrange to pick it up. But
- 21:29you can do that, and all of the prices are extraordinarily affordable. I
- 21:33mean, when you're talking about sixty sixty five percent off of some of these
- 21:36things, that's really useful. One of my favorite ones is Eddie's Tires,
- 21:40Winfield and PoCA, those things. I think that the buy it now is
- 21:44three twenty five one a five hundred dollars certificate, but I think the bid
- 21:45on them right now is one hundred and twenty five dollars one hundred and twenty
- 21:48five dollars if you get it for whatever you get it for. Having new
- 21:52tires are expensive now, I mean the price of tires has gone up quite
- 21:56a bit. Imagine being able to get a five hundred dollars certificate you end
- 21:59up getting for a couple hundred bucks or something. I mean, you're saving
- 22:00yourself quite a bit of money for things that you know you're going to be
- 22:03spending money on, if not today, then tomorrow, this summer, or
- 22:07whatever it might be. So there's some great opportunities over there. I mean,
- 22:11we got tax services from Penny Pinchers, gift certificates from Dunbar Furniture,
- 22:15one of our great advertisers in Pew and Pew just mentioned just a couple,
- 22:21and there's no way in this ten minute secment we can mention all of them.
- 22:25A go kart from West Virginia Auto Sales, a truck driving scholarship.
- 22:30Maybe could we discover one day. But this radio thing really ain't working out
- 22:33for us. Maybe we should go become truck drivers. And I will say
- 22:37this in all seriousness. You talk to anybody in the business world right now,
- 22:41there is a definite shortage of truck drivers. They do some I'm familiar
- 22:47with this facility down in Boone County. They do some great jobs down there.
- 22:48I mean, this is a scholarship that you could bet on for who
- 22:52knows how much you can get it for as compared to the what the normal
- 22:55tuition rate would be. Absolutely correct, there's so many of those things.
- 22:59You know, I have a young dog that loves kidderoos. You can get
- 23:00a year past the Kittteroo's for us a substancial discount. There's tons of stuff
- 23:06over there. I encourage you to just go check it out at WV Bargains
- 23:07because you know, we're all looking at speaking of penny pinchers, we're all
- 23:12looking to try to find ways to save money. And this isn't things.
- 23:17I mean, there's luxury items in there, don't get me wrong. You
- 23:18can find luxury audims, which there's also just so many everyday useful things that
- 23:23if you're like, if you look down through they're like, hey, I
- 23:26can save sixty percent on this. I can save sixty percent on this.
- 23:27I can save sixty percent on this. And if you're in the situation to
- 23:30do that in the long term, you're gonna save yourself tons of money by
- 23:33taking a look at this. And again it's like, it's a very good
- 23:36point that Coop brought up. We're here in the Charleston area, of course,
- 23:38but all of our stations in the WVRC media family take part in this.
- 23:44So you're going to see things that are coming from one of our stations
- 23:47in Martinsburg or Morgantown or Beckley, whatever. And if it's a good enough
- 23:52deal, people are willing to I mean, I know, I got a
- 23:53lot of buddies of mine, people in my family too, that are car
- 23:56people. They don't care to drive to get if they're gonna get the deal
- 24:00that they want on their car. I'm not saying that those deals are out
- 24:03there but I'm just saying there's a little bit of every I think we hit
- 24:07several of them here and again. It's just constantly evolving. So so check
- 24:11this out, you know, not only and again sense of urgency here.
- 24:15It's only for three days, that's right, that's the thing. Like,
- 24:18it's different than what it has been. You think that people aren't like,
- 24:21wait, I can get window tenpting for sixty percent off. Let me go
- 24:22get that gift certificate. You better hurry if you're looking to get some of
- 24:26these things because these things can get a little bit pricey and being able to
- 24:29get them for fifty sixty percent off is a huge deal. So those are
- 24:32things you want to check out and go ahead and do your Christmas shopping.
- 24:33I mean, I mean and again, these businesses that we're talking about here
- 24:37in Charleston, these are local businesses too. And people hear me every day
- 24:41beating the drums. Shop local, shop, local, shop local. These
- 24:45are where we got these things. You know, these are locally owned operated.
- 24:49The Limo Service is a local company. Kiddaroo's Pew Furniture, Done Bar
- 24:55for these are all local companies. Absolutely. Yeah, you got to check
- 25:00it out and if somebody wants to buy us the fire engine. We'll give
- 25:02you like a live read every day or something like that. So you know,
- 25:04you know what we could get if we put Hollywood Jeff Petty, our
- 25:07producer, forbid. What do you think we could get for Jeff Man.
- 25:11He's too valuable to even even to even contemplate this situation. Well, I
- 25:15mean, but he's got these flowing locks. He normally has his hair up
- 25:18in a ponytail, but today he's got these flowing locks. I mean the
- 25:21hair should be worth something, right, Jef. I mean it should be,
- 25:23But I mean I don't. As you can tell, I do try
- 25:27to take good care of my hair. Cascating ahead, let us yes,
- 25:30He and Shockley at our sister station, the Mountain. So well, Kop,
- 25:36I appreciate. I know you're busy, get busy, the hardest working
- 25:37man in radio. I appreciate you stopping by the studio to talk about this.
- 25:41But again, it kicked off today and it's going to go through Friday.
- 25:45It's WV Bargains dot com. Go check it out. Go just go
- 25:48take a look. Or if it weren't go on your lunch hour, you
- 25:49know whatever, just get your phone out or your laptop of or whatever you
- 25:53got and look at it and there's a lot of cool stuff on there.
- 25:56Man agreed, Yeah, go check it out. All right, Yi Cooper
- 26:00again, you can catch him this afternoon. Okay, quick preview. What
- 26:03do you got coming on on Hotline today? What is today? This is
- 26:04Wednesday? Right, Yeah, So Tony Creedy will be on in the five
- 26:07o'clock hour. We'll have let's see, we will have some fantasy sports talk.
- 26:12We'll be talking about everything that's going on with bold projections for where WV
- 26:18is going to go. Dave and I play a game called Pick one on
- 26:21Wednesday, So we'll do this that this afternoon at about four thirty's. It's
- 26:25it's a huge it's a huge to day of stuff from entertainment industry, all
- 26:30of our local sports stuff. We'll talk, We'll do a couple features on
- 26:33the high school teams that are going to be in the playoffs this upcoming weekend.
- 26:37It's a full gamut of entertainment and sports on Hotline. So you want
- 26:40to check us out from three to six. Somebody asked me one time when
- 26:42I was talking about the show this, so what kind of show is Hotline?
- 26:45My answer was yes, yeah, Well, our favorite thing to say
- 26:48is, hey, what's the hot line about? About three hours long?
- 26:51It's about three hours long. It's news, it's tech. It no politics
- 26:53though, no politics politics. And when we when like when Mansion announced last
- 26:59week or two weeks ago that he wasn't going to rerun for that, that
- 27:03happened during our show, Like we had to break that. So we came
- 27:06on and talked about it, and our listeners right away start sending a section
- 27:08no politics, no politics. Man. We didn't make any comments. We
- 27:11just had to report the news. So we do do news. We gotta
- 27:14do news, but we just try to stay out of somebody had I think
- 27:17even xed. I have a hard time saying that somebody xed about it and
- 27:21said that. Maybe I think it might have been Chris Lawrence that said,
- 27:23it's the most Dave weekly thing ever. Is that you talked about, you
- 27:26know, Joe Big national news, Joe Mansion is not going to run for
- 27:30reelection. What's your favorite chicken sand It was a national fried chicken sandwich day.
- 27:33Man, we had to talk about chicken sandwiches. Absolutely all right,
- 27:37Coop, I appreciate you man, Thanks a lot. WP bargains dot com

- 31:27I hate to admit that I did not hear you talk. All right,
- 31:30just give me thirty seconds. I can't I can't imagine what else I had
- 31:34to do other than listen to that. But I'm sure it wasn't work.
- 31:37It was five minutes ago. I mean, I thought you might be listening
- 31:41to the Careme ram there. Yeah, okay, all right, So we
- 31:42got this WV bargains dot Com. All of our stations across the state are
- 31:47taking part in this. We got all these great things that you could bid
- 31:48on sixty to seventy percent off these prizes, including a fire truck. You
- 31:53can win a fire truck. No, we got to buy it. You
- 31:56know, you get a bit on it. But now we have a fire
- 31:59track, a real, live, genuine fire truck Michael, Okay, I
- 32:04mean is that it's pretty cool. That's that's kind of like that kid that
- 32:07wanted to win the the the airplane from Pepsi. Did you ever hear about
- 32:14that? I don't. There was a commercial back in the eighties we could
- 32:17win. They said you could, like, if you had enough Pepsi points,
- 32:21you could do you win a Harrier jet. It was a joke,
- 32:23but some kids sued Pepsi. Sued Pepsi. I remember this story. Yeah,
- 32:28Now, this is a legit fire truck. Okay, good, I
- 32:30don't want to see it. You could get a fire truck. I do
- 32:34not need a fire truck. Put the sure. All right, all right,
- 32:36let's talk some serious stuff here, and let's talk about the West Side
- 32:39in the gas situation and last time you were on. You know, that's
- 32:43all we talked about last time we were on, as you were one of
- 32:45the people it was impacted by that. Let's talk about you personally. Talk
- 32:49about me personally. Fine, I'm concerned about other people I know, but
- 32:52your gas. Yeah, I believe it was about about a week ago while
- 32:58I was reconnected, and it turned out that my furnace did not work,
- 33:01my hot water tank did Uh, the way that the gas line runs into
- 33:06my house, it goes into the furnace first, all the water because of
- 33:09gravity, all the water dropped down into the furnace. However, I have
- 33:14a relatively new furnace and it only damaged the first electrical component that the water
- 33:19hit, which was a pretty easy fix. I'm very fortunate. There are
- 33:22a lot of people who are a lot less fortunate. And your hearing you
- 33:25know, the gas has been restored. Well, the gas is going through
- 33:30the through the lines, but unfortunately, when water hits these electronic components,
- 33:34it fries out whatever it hits. So a lot of people don't have hot
- 33:37water. A lot of people are still without heat, a lot of people
- 33:40are still without their gas stoves. So there's still a lot of people affected.
- 33:45And I will, uh, you know, commend Mountaineer Gas for the
- 33:50work that they've been doing. I mean they've been They've had crews over there
- 33:52from all over the state working around the clock to restore the the service over
- 33:58there. And they have contract with the whole bunch of different plumbers and HVAC
- 34:02people who have just been working their tails off going from house to house.
- 34:06But it's a big job and they haven't been able to fix everybody yet.
- 34:08And it's a good point that you bring up. And I mentioned this a
- 34:10couple of days ago, and the term that I use, Mike and I'm
- 34:13talking about when they say the gas has been restored. Gas has been restored,
- 34:16but customers have not. In many cases, a lot of appliances have
- 34:21been damaged by you know, water going through the gas line, which is
- 34:24it's not supposed to be there, and it's hitting electronic components. For whether
- 34:29it's a hot water tank or a furnace, you have electronic components and once
- 34:31the water hits it, Uh, you know, water and electronics do not
- 34:36mix, no, And you don't have to be you know, very intelligent,
- 34:38like I'm not to be able to figure that out there with you,
- 34:40all right, So let's I want to a big shout out to West Virginia
- 34:45Health right on the west side Breing United Methodists and the City of Charleston and
- 34:50all the other volunteer groups that have really stepped up and helped get you know,
- 34:53the space heaters out of people, blankets, hot plates and and up.
- 34:58You know, they're serving hot dinner meals every night over at West Virginia
- 35:00Health right, and they're really working hard to serve the community and they deserve
- 35:06praise. You mentioned Mountaineer Gas and from what I know about it, and
- 35:12I've had mister scaff on the show, you know, he's been on Hobby
- 35:14numerous times. He's made the rounds of the media when he's not out there
- 35:16working because he's literally on the scene, out there seven days a week.
- 35:21They're you know, I think that they've done in my opinion, they've done
- 35:24a They have done a pretty decent job considering the hand they were dealt because
- 35:29this was not from what we know now, and there's going to be a
- 35:31lot of investigation and a lot of litigation is going to come out of this.
- 35:37There is there's a lot of unanswered questions. There's questions that they want
- 35:40answered. But the big question that I keep seeing people ask over and over
- 35:46over and over again, it's West Virginia American water. Yeah, and they've
- 35:50been relatively silent on this, and maybe it's because they're gonna, you know,
- 35:52they're gonna wind up in court and that's where where this Oh yeah,
- 35:59I did. I reached out to you know, your friend and mine chairman
- 36:01Daniel Linvill, who chairs one of the chairs of the Joint Committee on Transportation
- 36:07and Infrastructure, and he agreed and I did a you know, we did
- 36:10a press release on it and everything. He agreed to call in representatives FRO
- 36:14both West Virginia, American Water and Mountaineer Gas to the next uh, during
- 36:17the next interims in front of the committee on the Joint Committee on Tree.
- 36:21Will that be the interims that are coming up this month? Yeah? Coming
- 36:23up next week, next week, next week. Where are those being held
- 36:25in Charles, Charles's Capital. Yeah, but when that when that committee meets,
- 36:30hopefully they show up and we can ask some questions. And the main
- 36:34issue with with Mountaineer Gas was just the initial lack of communication. If you
- 36:38have, you know, over a thousand customers over on the West Side that
- 36:43are going to get their their gas shut off, but there was absolutely no
- 36:45alert system in place, or if it was, it wasn't used. We
- 36:49had no clue. Everybody woke up that Saturday morning not having heat and wondering
- 36:53why, uh, that's something we need to improve on. I mean,
- 36:58you would think that that would all already be something you would think would already
- 37:01be the law that they would be required to have this alert system in place,
- 37:05but apparently it is not. It is for the for water for water
- 37:08companies, whether it's a public water system or you know, a huge,
- 37:15uh, you know, multinational company like West Virginia American Water that they have
- 37:20to have an alert system in place for boiled water advisories. But apparently the
- 37:23other utilities do not have to have this alert system in place. And I'd
- 37:27like to see them, I mean, even you said, even some of
- 37:30the smaller companies. I mean, you know, I haven't lived in Logan
- 37:35in ten years, but the radio station where I worked down there offered a
- 37:38texting services and I still to this day, I just never never disabled it.
- 37:43I still get text about boil water advisories and water outages and Logan and
- 37:46I haven't lived there in tent. Well, they're required to do so,
- 37:49they've had it, they've had it for ten years. Other utilities apparently are
- 37:52not required to alert their customers when something like this happens. Well, it's
- 37:58something that's going to have to be worked on. And you know, again,
- 38:01it seems like there's a lot of fingers pointing right now at West Virginia
- 38:05American Water in this and they've had a bad run Michael over the last ten
- 38:09years or so, well, I can. I mean, I've been very
- 38:13vocal about this. I've always felt that water, of all the utilities,
- 38:16that water should still be publicly owned. I think when you take that,
- 38:21when companies are are more more responsible to their shareholders than they are their rate
- 38:25payers, you have issues and it just seems like not enough, in my
- 38:30opinion, not enough is being put back into the infrastructure that brings the water
- 38:34to people, and more money is put into acquiring other water systems. And
- 38:38West Virginia American Water is buying up water systems in the eastern Panhandle. They're
- 38:43buying them up down in Monroe County. That's all over the state. They're
- 38:46buying up all these water systems. And what it seems like, at least
- 38:51to someone who's just you know, someone who just pays their bill and expects
- 38:54to have clean water coming out of their tap, is that they're not putting
- 38:59enough back into the infant structure. The textra said, why didn't the city
- 39:02had the alarms go off on the west side and then had the residents call
- 39:05for information. I don't know if the city was alerted in a timely manner
- 39:09at least didn't know the extent of it at the time. None of us
- 39:15knew the extent of it. Somebody did, I mean somebody knew the extent
- 39:17of it, but not the people who live over there, and I'm not
- 39:21sure that the city did either. I'm not sure that Mountaineer Gas may have
- 39:23even known. I mean, based on my conversation with mister scaff I don't
- 39:27know that they even realized that it was as bad as what it was initially.
- 39:30One of the questions I would just like to ask, how long did
- 39:32it? I mean, how long did it have to happen for forty six
- 39:36miles of water pipe to get? So I'm sorry I forgot we became water
- 39:38pipe of gas line to get and became water pipe. It wasn't intended to
- 39:43be. But Dave Allen showing five any live bride to a part by General

- 39:59General Heart where Lumber of Winfield, Mike, there's been a lot of
- 40:02the news. I think copy is going to delve into this a little bit
- 40:05next hour about this possible shutdown of the postal distribution center out of South Ridge.
- 40:12I mean, there's a lot of folks that are it's actually the only
- 40:15postal distribution center in the cate of West Virginia that's left, and they serve
- 40:19pretty much all of West Virginia and a portion of eastern Kentucky except for northern
- 40:23West Virginia, don't serve the Panhandle, but pretty much they serve the entire
- 40:27state. And there's talk that they just talk right now, but it's getting
- 40:31a lot of play that they may shut that facility down and then transfer to
- 40:37transfer those services to Pennsylvania. I know the governor. I think I saw
- 40:42where he's paying a letter, you know about this urging them not to do
- 40:45that. You're you're taking it well. I agree with the governor on this.
- 40:49I would urge him not to do that as well. I think it
- 40:52will possibly slow down our services here in West Virginia if our mail for the
- 40:59entire state is sorted in Pennsylvania, and you know, not to mention.
- 41:02A lot of folks around here work there, and I would like to see
- 41:07those those jobs stay here. I'd like to see those people stay employed with
- 41:12the Postal Service, and I'd like to see us keep our our facility up
- 41:15there and at south Ridge. I mean it's I think Hobby is going to
- 41:20have the local the union representative. I think from that organization. On the
- 41:23show, I saw that I would strongly oppose any any plans to move our
- 41:30facility out of state. Yeah. I don't know anybody that would disagree with
- 41:35that. And it's a twelve minute agreement on that, twelve minutes away from
- 41:37ten. What else is on your mind? I know that you've you've been
- 41:40keeping an eye on some news, did you? But first of all,
- 41:42did you have a good Thanksgiving? I had a great Thanksgiving. How about
- 41:45did you have a good night to see that you went to see the Jets
- 41:46point, I don't want to talk about it. Uh so you Yeah,
- 41:52I was. I visited some family up in New York. My mother and
- 41:57I drove up to New York to visit fans, and I did go out
- 42:02to the meadow Lands on for the first ever Black Friday game, And man,
- 42:07that was a demoralizing loss there at the metal Lands. All right,
- 42:10I'll leave you alone on that. I think I'll talk any more about that.
- 42:14One more thing on the water company, and then we'll take a break,
- 42:15and then we'll kind of reset and come back with some things. I
- 42:17know you want to talk about. Twit in the news. Texas just want
- 42:21to know where Bill Rainey and his klan at the PSC or to force the
- 42:23water company, to help the gas company get rid of the Public Service Commission
- 42:28does the texture. Well, that's one of the reasons why we're calling for
- 42:30an investigation front of the legislature, because you know, unlike the Public Service
- 42:34Commission, of legislature answers directly to voters, and I think it's important to
- 42:38have representatives closer to the people asked those questions instead of appointed members of the
- 42:45public service. And this would be one of those. In this divided time
- 42:47that we live in, I would think that with this situation, Mike,
- 42:50you could sit down with you and the most right of right wing legislators and
- 42:55you'd all be on the same page on this. So far we are.
- 42:58It's good. It was good. Like I said, I reached out to
- 43:00the chair. Obviously, the chairs of the committee are on the other side
- 43:04of the aisle. They're Republicans and they were they were in agreement with us,
- 43:07even though they don't represent this part of the state. You know it
- 43:10could happen in their district as well, and they wanted to get to the
- 43:15bottom of it as well. And this is not a partisan issue. It's

- 45:54realtor client on the top of the show and answering real estate questions, and
- 46:00one question came in, like, we'll take care of this and we'll turn
- 46:01over to Mike. Somebody had texted just after Rich left and said, are
- 46:05the economics in favor of new built houses? I imagine Holmes won't be built
- 46:10if it costs more to build than what the house will be sold for.
- 46:14I texted Rich, who's already left. He said, still about two hundred
- 46:17dollars per square foot to build. That number seems to me to be dropping,
- 46:22but not quickly. So hope that answers the question. All right,
- 46:25Mike, what's on your mind? News wise? Okay, Well, I
- 46:29think it's something that should be concerning to everybody. It said something that shouldn't
- 46:34be It definitely isn't a partisan issue. There was an article that came out
- 46:38yesterday, I believe in West Virginia Watch, which I think is a new
- 46:43publication and news service here in West Virginia, and they do a really good
- 46:47job. And the author of this report, Amelia Nicely, I believe she's
- 46:53been on this show. She was on Hoppy yesterday to talk about this,
- 46:57and it was in regards to the case, the horrific case that was discovered
- 47:00up in Sissonville here in Kanall County not too long ago, with the family
- 47:06that had come here from Washington State, I believe, and they had five
- 47:08foster children and the two oldest foster kids were being kept in a shack,
- 47:15aki in a shed, and they were treating these kids really like slaves and
- 47:20forcing them into labor and have miserable conditions. I mean children, these are
- 47:23children that can't have no way to fend for themselves. They're in the foster
- 47:29care system, and they were being kept in a shed. And the what
- 47:34the new, what you know, what just came out was that the West
- 47:37Virginia Child Protective Services had been called several times to that residence and there are
- 47:44absolutely no records showing that they responded to those calls. So neighbors saw what
- 47:49was going on. It's a close knit community up there in Sistonville, and
- 47:52that and that part of Sistonville, people all know all their neighbors. They
- 47:54didn't know this family, but what they could see were children being tortured and
- 47:59forced into slaves of labor at this residence. And they called CPS repeatedly,
- 48:04and there are no records showing that there was any sort of response to this.
- 48:08I just found the story just just heartbreaking, is gut wrenching, as
- 48:13anybody would, and it just to me, it shows that we have you
- 48:19know, why are they unable to respond to these types of calls to protect
- 48:22the most vulnerable members of our society, children in foster careents because they don't
- 48:27have enough workers there. And we're not going to get more workers there if
- 48:30we continue to have this lack of priorities and misplaced priorities in state government,
- 48:36where you know, we have legislators and a governor that want to pat each
- 48:38other on the back for passing a flat budget. Well what does that mean.
- 48:42It means we're not paying people to do very tough jobs. And I'll
- 48:45tell you, raising the premiums on PIA, raising the premiums on our public
- 48:51employees insurance is going to make matters even worse. It makes it even less
- 48:54attractive to people for people to work in the public sector. You know,
- 49:00people can go get a job at Walmart or McDonald's and not have to see
- 49:05horrific stuff like children being locked in a shed. Well, that's where they're
- 49:07going to go. And we aren't going to be able to attract people into
- 49:09the public sector. And what that means is we can't do We can't have
- 49:15the most basic services protecting children in state custody who have absolutely no way to
- 49:22fend for themselves. If we can't do that as a state, then we
- 49:24are failing it. I read the story and, by the way, very
- 49:29nice job of reporting there by Amelia. I don't I don't think. I
- 49:31don't think she's been on the show. I don't know her personally. I
- 49:34would be more than happy to have her on. But it was a very
- 49:37nice well I mean, I say it's a very nice job of reporting.
- 49:38I'll say it was as nice as it could possibly be considering the subject matter.
- 49:43It was a horrific subject matter which she did. It was a very
- 49:45good investigation. It was a very good investigation. So is this something Mike
- 49:50as you know, the new session will will gavel in in January. Got
- 49:52interims coming up next week. The new session will come in. It's an
- 49:57election year, as you know, a lot sometimes been there a long time.
- 50:01You know, sometimes not a heck for like gets done during an election,
- 50:05Ye're not as much as maybe an off election year. Is this something
- 50:07that in your mind forget about parties? Do you think that the legislators are
- 50:12now going to take this seriously that we've gotten that they have to do something?
- 50:15And I'd say in the strongest possible terms that Dan well Butterby, if
- 50:21we can't address this issue, I don't know what else we need to even
- 50:23be talking about. From out children in state custody. It's a basic function
- 50:29of a state government to do they the best they can to protect these children
- 50:34who have nobody else there for them for whatever reason, you know, their
- 50:37parents are unable to take care of them. They've been taken away from their
- 50:40families. They are in state custody and to have the child protect the services
- 50:45called repeatedly over this most horrific of living conditions for these children that were locked
- 50:51in a shed out in Cystamville and nobody there's no records showing that anybody responded
- 50:55to those calls, and that's not bord. I don't think it's an isolated
- 51:00incident. I think that there's just this culture in state government where we I
- 51:07think we said in our statement yesterday, we have a lot of folks in
- 51:09office, including the governor, who know the cost of everything, but the
- 51:13value of nothing. It's all about you know what things cost. How we're
- 51:17going to save the state money. We're going to have a flat budget.
- 51:20Well, flat budget means that you're not putting money into basic services, and
- 51:23there's a whole lot of basic services that aren't getting met, and this is
- 51:27just the most egregious example of it. We've got to close out the show
- 51:31quick textas Dave, I worked for the Postal Service Remote Encoding Center for ten
- 51:36years before we receive visitors from DC to inform us that we were closing.
- 51:38It was located on the patio clay side, a clay center side of Lee
- 51:42Street post Office. We were only one of three remaining facilities from fifty nation
- 51:46wide in first peak. Why is West Virginia being targeted again? Well,
- 51:51it's a good question we should ask. All right, Yeah, we'll ask
- 51:53that all right. I appreciate you being here, Mike, thanks for having
- 51:57me on. Thanks for let's bet on that fire truck. I need to
- 52:00bid on it. Yeah, you gotta beid on it. Okay, I'll

- 52:06what's the insurance on that? I don't know. Just go get a it's
