Latest / AFR Saints / Ross Jackson Breaks Down The Derek Carr Injury And Saints-Commanders
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Saints back on the practice field Friday.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Still know Derek Carr, looks like Jake Hayner will be
- 0:05Speaker 2: the guy if Carr can't go. Ross Jackson's the guy
- 0:07Speaker 2: with all the infos joined us.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Now, how are you, dude, hey man?
- 0:11Speaker 3: Doing great, doing great, Glad to be here with you. Man,
- 0:12Speaker 3: appreciate you have me on.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Yeah, we appreciate the time.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Okay, let's just get the quarterback update, get us up
- 0:18Speaker 2: to speed on the absolute latest of this quarterback carousel.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely so. Derek Carr, who of course is dealing
- 0:24Speaker 3: with not only the left hand injury but is also
- 0:26Speaker 3: spilling concussion protocol, is doubtful for Sunday's game against the Wall,
- 0:32Speaker 3: and so because the team has walked through tomorrow on Saturday,
- 0:35Speaker 3: that can qualify as his practice in order to clear
- 0:40Speaker 3: concussion protocol. So there's a chance that tomorrow he gets
- 0:43Speaker 3: elevated from doubtful to questionable, which would then allow him
- 0:46Speaker 3: to effectively be the second string quarterback behind Jake Hayner,
- 0:50Speaker 3: so that if they have to go to another quarterback,
- 0:52Speaker 3: they can actually go back to their starter if they
- 0:53Speaker 3: needed to in the game, but it will be Jake
- 0:56Speaker 3: Hayner expected to start the game. We spoke with head
- 0:58Speaker 3: coach interim head coach Aaron Rizzy. He confirmed that report.
- 1:01Speaker 3: And so as we've expected all throughout the week, second
- 1:04Speaker 3: year quarterback out of Preslo State jkne Or will get
- 1:06Speaker 3: his first NFL start this weekend up against the Command.
- 1:09Speaker 2: So it's interesting that the note about the concussion protocol,
- 1:12Speaker 2: so car still has to clear that. But do we
- 1:14Speaker 2: have any sense at all of how severe the hand injury,
- 1:18Speaker 2: how limiting the hand injury might be.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Oh, it's really interesting, you know, Rizzy said on Wednesdays
- 1:25Speaker 3: that they're trying to see if the swelling will go down,
- 1:28Speaker 3: so that that kind of at least indicates some type
- 1:32Speaker 3: of a contusion or something like that that would cause
- 1:34Speaker 3: that swelling. So that is some kind of internal something
- 1:37Speaker 3: or another with the hand. But the original reports all
- 1:40Speaker 3: said that there was a fractured hand and that it
- 1:42Speaker 3: would you know, potentially keep him out for several weeks
- 1:44Speaker 3: and potentially for the rest of the season and all
- 1:46Speaker 3: these other things. But that's never been confirmed and to
- 1:49Speaker 3: be fair, not necessarily denied either by New Orleans. So
- 1:53Speaker 3: there's a level of you know, is this a smaller
- 1:56Speaker 3: fracture to where it's not as big of a deal,
- 1:58Speaker 3: is it a different kind of injury things like that.
- 2:00Speaker 3: But there is some kind of swelling, which means some
- 2:03Speaker 3: type of internal damage. But that's the thing that they're
- 2:06Speaker 3: effectively managing. It seems like from that point the next
- 2:09Speaker 3: thing is the concussion protocol that's actually keeping him out
- 2:12Speaker 3: more than anything else from the way that the Saints
- 2:14Speaker 3: are telling it. So it is an interesting little battle
- 2:17Speaker 3: of reported condition versus what the Saints are saying. So
- 2:22Speaker 3: we'll see which one of those shakes out in the
- 2:23Speaker 3: coming week.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Okay, let's say that it is Hainer as it appears
- 2:27Speaker 2: it will be. Give me a thought here, Ross on
- 2:30Speaker 2: the limited sample size. But I mean, you're a guy that,
- 2:33Speaker 2: like you went, you were at camp out in California.
- 2:37Speaker 2: You've seen as much of Jay Cane or as anybody.
- 2:39Speaker 2: So give me a thought here on what we might
- 2:41Speaker 2: expect from Jay Caner on a first start.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I think what you're going to what you should
- 2:45Speaker 3: expect from Jake can Er is the guy that's going
- 2:46Speaker 3: to be really decisive and really confident, and those two
- 2:50Speaker 3: things can be really good. Those two things can also
- 2:52Speaker 3: work against the young quarterback because if you're really decisive
- 2:55Speaker 3: and really confident and make the wrong decisions. Those things
- 2:57Speaker 3: can go the wrong way. And so that's the big
- 2:59Speaker 3: thing that we're going to have to see in this
- 3:01Speaker 3: game is with actually getting a full week. I can't
- 3:04Speaker 3: even really call it a full week because from my understanding,
- 3:07Speaker 3: according to people that I've talked to with knowledge of
- 3:09Speaker 3: the situation, both quarterbacks did indeed receive a kind of
- 3:13Speaker 3: a split amount of snaps all throughout Wednesday and Thursday's practices.
- 3:17Speaker 3: But in any case, he's preparing a game plan and
- 3:20Speaker 3: then he'll be able to go out and execute a
- 3:22Speaker 3: game plan. So because of that, I think some of
- 3:24Speaker 3: that decisiveness, that confidence will work in his favor. He's
- 3:27Speaker 3: somebody that can move around as well, so I don't
- 3:29Speaker 3: know that they're going to run any designed runs with them,
- 3:31Speaker 3: but he can extend plays and he's he's been a
- 3:35Speaker 3: fairly good decision maker, not putting the ball in any
- 3:37Speaker 3: harm's way. But of course it's on a small sample size.
- 3:40Speaker 3: And I would say too that during training camp and
- 3:43Speaker 3: all that, even during the preseason, we didn't see a
- 3:44Speaker 3: lot of turnover worthy passes, if you will, from Jake Caner.
- 3:48Speaker 3: I think some of the pitfalls in terms of his
- 3:50Speaker 3: game will just come from youth and inexperience and all
- 3:53Speaker 3: those things. Like we have to keep in mind this
- 3:55Speaker 3: as a guy that's getting his first career start. He's
- 3:57Speaker 3: got a forty eight point three percent completion percentage over
- 3:59Speaker 3: the course of those again very limited snaps in the
- 4:02Speaker 3: regular season. So I think you're going to see a
- 4:05Speaker 3: blend of youth in an experience, but still a lot
- 4:09Speaker 3: of decisiveness reading the defense, trusting what he sees, and
- 4:13Speaker 3: the confidence to try to make some of the throws
- 4:15Speaker 3: that maybe other rookie quarterbacks or first time starting quarterbacks
- 4:19Speaker 3: excuse me, I might hold onto the ball a little
- 4:21Speaker 3: bit longer.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Ross Jackson's with us Louisiana sports dot netlocked on Saints.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Make sure you read him and listen to him every
- 4:27Speaker 2: single day. Looks like Camaro will be back. What's the
- 4:30Speaker 2: realistic expectation for this running game given what we brought,
- 4:35Speaker 2: probably expect maybe wouldn't be the most potent passing offense
- 4:39Speaker 2: on Sunday.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think that's pretty safe to say.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I don't know that the passing offense is going to
- 4:43Speaker 3: come out and be a wild success story.
- 4:46Speaker 2: This weekend.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So I would imagine anytime you have a first time
- 4:48Speaker 3: starting quarterback, you want to lean on your run game, right,
- 4:50Speaker 3: That's going to be a big part of what it
- 4:51Speaker 3: is that New Orleans does. So great to see Alvin
- 4:54Speaker 3: Kamara back, no injury designation at all on Friday, so
- 4:57Speaker 3: he is good to go. So I would expect the
- 4:59Speaker 3: tandem of he and Kendre Miller, the second year running
- 5:02Speaker 3: back who just came back off against the reserve last
- 5:04Speaker 3: week and ended up scoring a touchdown against the New
- 5:06Speaker 3: York Giants, for those guys to be a big focus
- 5:08Speaker 3: in this game. The Washington Commanders are the number twenty
- 5:11Speaker 3: seven ranked defense in the NFL against the run, and
- 5:14Speaker 3: just saw Doroon Paine, one of their big guys in
- 5:17Speaker 3: the trenches, particularly on the interior, ended up going to
- 5:21Speaker 3: DNP or listed as DNP on the injury report today
- 5:25Speaker 3: with a back injury. So that's a pretty significant loss
- 5:28Speaker 3: if he can't play, or if he is playing hampered
- 5:31Speaker 3: to an already struggling run defense. So I expect to
- 5:33Speaker 3: see a lot of Alvin Kamara, a lot of Kendre Miller,
- 5:36Speaker 3: both in the run game and in the passing game.
- 5:38Speaker 3: But I think in particular, the Saints are going to
- 5:39Speaker 3: want to get the ground game going, and I wouldn't
- 5:41Speaker 3: be surprised to see them try to play a similar,
- 5:43Speaker 3: but hopefully, hopefully for them, more successful version of what
- 5:47Speaker 3: they did against the Los Angeles Rams, where they kind
- 5:49Speaker 3: of tried to play that clock control, ball control, kind
- 5:52Speaker 3: of possession kind of offense at the beginning of the game.
- 5:56Speaker 3: And if they can do that against Washington and kind
- 5:58Speaker 3: of keep Jayden Daniels off the field, I think that's
- 6:00Speaker 3: going to work to their advantage. So expect to see
- 6:02Speaker 3: a lot of the run game for Alvin Kamara and
- 6:04Speaker 3: Kendre Miller in this game, and potentially too, with Alvin
- 6:07Speaker 3: Kamara being just sixty two yards away from his first
- 6:09Speaker 3: ever thousand yard rushing season, an opportunity to catch that.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Here in this game, that would be a very cool
- 6:15Speaker 2: designation here at the end of the day. Otherwise, pretty
- 6:18Speaker 2: miserable season for New Orleans.
- 6:20Speaker 3: But.
- 6:21Speaker 2: We so the interesting note about Ron Pain being injured
- 6:24Speaker 2: today and officially listened as questionable. However, Marshawn Lattimore no limitations.
- 6:29Speaker 1: He's going to go. What do you think the response
- 6:33Speaker 1: to Latimore is going to be in the Dome on Sunday.
- 6:36Speaker 3: It's interesting. I think it might be favorable the question mark.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I don't know. It's interesting sort of seeing the sort
- 6:44Speaker 3: of dichotomy of the response of him today, kind of
- 6:47Speaker 3: having these comments around the Saints traded me away and
- 6:49Speaker 3: you know, I'm going to show them why they shouldn't
- 6:51Speaker 3: have and all these other things, and so it's going
- 6:53Speaker 3: to be interesting. Like he's obviously a little bit more
- 6:55Speaker 3: motivated coming into this game. He of course waited till
- 6:58Speaker 3: this game to make his debut. Sure, not on purpose, Brig,
- 7:01Speaker 3: just kind of the way that maybe a little unpurpose.
- 7:05Speaker 3: All right, I'll give them that, I'll give that. But
- 7:07Speaker 3: you know, I think that it's going to be an
- 7:09Speaker 3: interesting matchup for sure. And look, he's going to be
- 7:12Speaker 3: kind of praying in this game on a young, inexperienced quarterback. So, uh,
- 7:16Speaker 3: this is a This is a tough one. The Saints
- 7:18Speaker 3: and the Commanders in terms of passing offense are kind
- 7:22Speaker 3: of neck and neck versus the Saints offense versus that
- 7:25Speaker 3: Commander's defense. Both ranks seventeen in the NFL in their
- 7:28Speaker 3: respective categories. But you know, this is a Saints seventeenth
- 7:32Speaker 3: ranked offense. It will be without its starting quarterback, and
- 7:34Speaker 3: that is a or seventeenth rank passing offense, excuse me.
- 7:37Speaker 3: And that's a Washington Commander's seventh rank passing defense that
- 7:40Speaker 3: now adds Marshaw Latimore. So those are some some pretty
- 7:43Speaker 3: important contextual differences in terms of what you might have
- 7:45Speaker 3: expected coming into this game versus the reality of what
- 7:48Speaker 3: it will be on Sunday Russ.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Do the Saints have any advantages perceived or otherwise in
- 7:54Speaker 2: this game aside from being at home?
- 7:56Speaker 3: Just the run game is really kind of the biggest
- 7:58Speaker 3: thing for them. I mean, they're they're behind on scoring differential,
- 8:03Speaker 3: point differential, excuse me. The Saints are in the negative
- 8:06Speaker 3: on the point diferential. The Washington Edders are at plus
- 8:09Speaker 3: eighty in the point differential. Turnover differential is plus four,
- 8:13Speaker 3: So that's in favor of the Commanders versus plus two
- 8:16Speaker 3: for the New Orleans Saints. Run defense, run offense. That's
- 8:19Speaker 3: really the only place that the things seem to have
- 8:21Speaker 3: a real advantage here, and so that's what they're going
- 8:24Speaker 3: to have to lean on in this one. And look out,
- 8:26Speaker 3: I'll say this too. The Saints didn't take advantage of
- 8:29Speaker 3: the run defense disparity or the run offense run defense
- 8:32Speaker 3: disparity last week up against the New York Giants, not
- 8:34Speaker 3: in the way that we expect them to. The Giants
- 8:36Speaker 3: are kind of in a similar situation coming into that
- 8:38Speaker 3: game as the number twenty nine rushing defense and lost
- 8:41Speaker 3: Dexter to Lawrence going into that game. Now here's a
- 8:43Speaker 3: bit of a repeat this weekend, the number twenty seven
- 8:45Speaker 3: rushing defense potentially losing Deron Pain coming into this game.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Things have got to be able to take advantage of that,
- 8:51Speaker 3: especially with their starting five offensive line back together for
- 8:53Speaker 3: a second week in a row, but for the first
- 8:55Speaker 3: time since Week three. So that's really the one place
- 8:57Speaker 3: where they have an advantage and they've got to take
- 8:59Speaker 3: advantage of that in this matchup.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Before you go realistically playing for for anything this weekend.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Pride, uh, you know, like that's that's really that's really
- 9:10Speaker 3: what you're looking for for the rest of the season.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I like, I've talked to a lot of players in
- 9:13Speaker 3: the locker room. They're not really worried about playoff seating
- 9:15Speaker 3: and things like that. I can't blame them either. I Mean,
- 9:17Speaker 3: you look at like the New York Times odds for
- 9:19Speaker 3: them to get in the playoffs. It's less than one
- 9:21Speaker 3: percent everything. That's not really the focus. The focus for
- 9:24Speaker 3: them is you know, you'll hear the you'll hear the
- 9:25Speaker 3: concept all the time. Oh, we're just trying to go
- 9:27Speaker 3: want to know this week. But I think from an
- 9:29Speaker 3: individual standpoint, this is an opportunity for them, to these
- 9:32Speaker 3: players to go out there and show that they either
- 9:34Speaker 3: a deserve to be on this team again next year
- 9:36Speaker 3: or at least put some good tape on the board
- 9:38Speaker 3: so that if they've become free agents over the offseason,
- 9:40Speaker 3: it's an opportunity to you know, be able to sign
- 9:43Speaker 3: a contract and land somewhere else. Despite the results of
- 9:45Speaker 3: the game or excuse me, have the team, how they
- 9:48Speaker 3: individually perform, it still value to them. So I think
- 9:51Speaker 3: you're going to see a.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Lot of pride.
- 9:52Speaker 3: I think that this is a game where it's a uh,
- 9:55Speaker 3: They're going to be perceived to be outmatched and rightfully so,
- 9:58Speaker 3: and so they'll come out and play as a team
- 10:00Speaker 3: that doesn't have much to lose. Jake Haynter himself told
- 10:03Speaker 3: me today, Hey, we're five and eight, what do I
- 10:05Speaker 3: have to lose? And that's that's a great attitude to have.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Going into this game makes you a little bit dangerous
- 10:09Speaker 3: when you're willing to be that team that doesn't have
- 10:11Speaker 3: the kind of measure of, oh, we have to succeed,
- 10:15Speaker 3: we have to do this, we have to do that.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Back of the matter is they don't have to do anything.
- 10:18Speaker 3: They just got to go out there and play, and
- 10:19Speaker 3: so that's what they're going to look to do this again.
- 10:20Speaker 2: We'll get them on Twitter x at Ross Jackson NOLA.
- 10:23Speaker 2: You can read them at Louisiana sports dot Net. You
- 10:25Speaker 2: always listen to him more watch him on the Lockdown
- 10:28Speaker 2: Saints podcast YouTube or podcast app. Okay man, we appreciate it.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Enjoy the game Sunday, real pleasure.
- 10:34Speaker 3: But thanks much. Take care, say safe. I'll talk to
- 10:36Speaker 3: you soon.
