Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Fox Crickets podcast The follow On,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and it's our first for the summer of twenty twenty
- 0:10Speaker 1: four twenty twenty five, and what a big summer it
- 0:13Speaker 1: is shaping to be. The lighted to be joined on
- 0:15Speaker 1: the opening podcast by Brett Lee, a champion Australian cricketer.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Almost twenty five years of the day since Brett Lee
- 0:22Speaker 1: debooed for Australia against India in the Boxing Day Test,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and what a debut that was, taking five wickets in
- 0:30Speaker 1: his first inning. So first since Dennis Lily to do that,
- 0:33Speaker 1: first Australian sis denis Lily to do that. Welcome to
- 0:35Speaker 1: the follow On, Brett, great to have you aboard.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks Cord. It nice to be here and nice
- 0:41Speaker 2: have been the first one for the year.
- 0:42Speaker 3: So it's always nice to get that brand new ball
- 0:44Speaker 3: in the hand, nappen up the bowling.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Well on that we'll start. We'll get onto some hot
- 0:50Speaker 1: topics obviously to come. But I just thought with that
- 0:53Speaker 1: lovely memory of twenty five years ago and what an
- 0:56Speaker 1: amazing Test debut that was against India, I think he
- 0:59Speaker 1: took the wicket of a wicket with your fourth ball.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You had Ral driver, and I think you took three
- 1:05Speaker 1: wickets in the last six deliveries of the innings to
- 1:09Speaker 1: take five for not a bad debut. What can you
- 1:11Speaker 1: remember about that, that moment in your career and what
- 1:15Speaker 1: set you up for in the years to come.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, probably just the whole build up.
- 1:19Speaker 3: There was a lot of expectation, a lot of conjecture
- 1:22Speaker 3: around would I play or not. Michael Kasperwitz was looking
- 1:27Speaker 3: to get the NOD ahead of me, and then.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I found at the morning of the match that I
- 1:31Speaker 2: was playing.
- 1:31Speaker 3: So all of that those memories of thinking back to
- 1:36Speaker 3: a nine year old kid was starting sort of flooding.
- 1:38Speaker 3: All the hard work, the sacrifices, the injuries, overcoming adversity.
- 1:43Speaker 2: People saying I wasn't good enough.
- 1:45Speaker 3: That they all sort of flashed through my eyes and
- 1:47Speaker 3: that instant and I was like, well, you know what,
- 1:50Speaker 3: I've worked so hard to get here, Let's just have
- 1:52Speaker 3: some fun enjoy And that's exactly what I went out
- 1:54Speaker 3: and did. I played as good as I possibly could,
- 1:58Speaker 3: but yeah, to pick up fivets against India at the
- 2:01Speaker 3: MCG nineteen ninety nine, with you know, close to one hundred.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Thousand people watching it, I still can't believe it happened.
- 2:09Speaker 3: To be honest, it was a lot of fun and
- 2:11Speaker 3: I thought, well, I've taken one wicket, I wouldn't mind
- 2:13Speaker 3: getting a few more, and then that becomes a love
- 2:15Speaker 3: affair that you have with cricket and hopefully takes wickets.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Did you feel like you had the entire crowd behind
- 2:20Speaker 1: you when you stood at the mark for that first delivery.
- 2:23Speaker 3: It's weird because being an Australian, having one hundred thousand
- 2:27Speaker 3: people there that were you know, ninety or one thousand
- 2:30Speaker 3: were sort of barracking for Australia and being like the
- 2:32Speaker 3: new kill on the block. I think a lot of
- 2:34Speaker 3: people want to see that young kid do well. And
- 2:40Speaker 3: you know, people I think appreciate fast buying. So it
- 2:43Speaker 3: wasn't a hard self for me. I had to make
- 2:45Speaker 3: sure I could deliver and hopefully get some wickets.
- 2:48Speaker 2: But yeah, personally and looking.
- 2:51Speaker 3: At the caliber of players I had around me, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 3: Steven Mark Wore, Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden, Shane
- 3:00Speaker 3: warn and Glenn McGraw, I could not live I was
- 3:02Speaker 3: in the team, to be honest, and there's just the
- 3:04Speaker 3: most surreal unbelievable feeling.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Now with India heading out to play in a month
- 3:12Speaker 1: or so time, the first Test in Perth November twenty two,
- 3:18Speaker 1: lots to look forward to. We know that India is
- 3:20Speaker 1: at the moment in a major Test series against New Zealand.
- 3:25Speaker 1: A bit of a shock there, and we'll touch on that.
- 3:26Speaker 1: But you've had a lot of time in India, you
- 3:29Speaker 1: spent a lot of time there. It's clearly a fond
- 3:32Speaker 1: nation for you, a massive nation in cricket.
- 3:35Speaker 4: But you must have lots of fond memories there.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I do, and you know I've been going to India
- 3:39Speaker 3: for thirty years. I think my count is about one
- 3:42Speaker 3: hundred and sixty five visits there or thereabouts. I've been
- 3:45Speaker 3: through several passports in terms of the book being filled up,
- 3:50Speaker 3: but I've just taken so many great memories away from India.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It's the hospitality.
- 3:54Speaker 3: People over there are so generous and when they find
- 3:57Speaker 3: out that you play cricket, and if you've been lucky
- 3:59Speaker 3: to present your country, you get looked after pretty well
- 4:02Speaker 3: in India. And I want to make sure too that
- 4:05Speaker 3: when India comes out and tours Australia they get the
- 4:07Speaker 3: same hospitality as I'm sure that Australia will you know,
- 4:11Speaker 3: a lot of Australian fans that here, both with South
- 4:14Speaker 3: Asia heritage and obviously Australian blood, there will be a
- 4:18Speaker 3: lot of people looking forward to seeing the world superstars.
- 4:21Speaker 3: You know, when we think about Test cricket, we think
- 4:24Speaker 3: about cricket in general, it's pretty much India is where
- 4:28Speaker 3: it's at. You know, they've got some of the world's
- 4:30Speaker 3: greatest players and for us to be able to showcase
- 4:34Speaker 3: the time that we have here in Australia with our team,
- 4:37Speaker 3: but they'll be up against a very solid Indian So
- 4:39Speaker 3: I know that they lost.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Only yesterday or during the week with you know, defeat to.
- 4:47Speaker 3: New Zealand, which was first time I think thirty six
- 4:51Speaker 3: years they lost, so that was a bit of a shock.
- 4:54Speaker 3: But I can promise you when they come out to
- 4:56Speaker 3: Australia they'll be craiging ready to go.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Well, we might start but just with a couple of
- 5:01Speaker 1: the Australian topics and then move on to the Indian
- 5:03Speaker 1: team and what we can expect from them through the summer.
- 5:07Speaker 1: The hot topic, the hottest topic around is who will
- 5:09Speaker 1: partner Usman Kwaja at the top of the order with
- 5:13Speaker 1: Steve Smith moving down to number four. We'll put you
- 5:17Speaker 1: on the spot at some stage, Brett. But firstly, having
- 5:19Speaker 1: been around you South Wales cricket for so long, Sam
- 5:22Speaker 1: Constace Andrew McDonald on the weekend said that he was
- 5:26Speaker 1: firmly in the frame among alongside Marcus Harris and Cameron
- 5:30Speaker 1: Bancroft and Matthew Renshaw as a logical candidates to fill
- 5:34Speaker 1: that position position beside Kauwaja. What can you tell me
- 5:38Speaker 1: about Constance? When did he first come onto your radar?
- 5:41Speaker 1: He obviously had a great junior career, done some great
- 5:44Speaker 1: things at under nineteen level and then that double century
- 5:47Speaker 1: last week against the two centuries last week against South Australia.
- 5:50Speaker 1: You know, what do we know about him and what
- 5:53Speaker 1: do you like about him?
- 5:54Speaker 3: Well, that's a loving segue, Corning, because I was exactly
- 5:58Speaker 3: going to talk about him, not because he's wearing a
- 6:01Speaker 3: blue cap and I'm a proud new South Welshman. But
- 6:04Speaker 3: he's had a fantastic start to his first class career,
- 6:07Speaker 3: you know, two hundreds pretty much back to back and
- 6:11Speaker 3: he played a handful of Shefford Shield matches. But I've
- 6:13Speaker 3: had a bit of a close eye on him for
- 6:15Speaker 3: the last couple of years. As you mentioned right, he's
- 6:18Speaker 3: come through the ranks and done very well from under
- 6:20Speaker 3: NINETEENES cricket to get into this Shefford Shield squad under
- 6:25Speaker 3: some guidance as well with I know that Shane Watson's
- 6:28Speaker 3: been doing a lot of work and I'm really good
- 6:30Speaker 3: mates of what I and what I has had a
- 6:31Speaker 3: bit of a keen eye on him and a lot
- 6:33Speaker 3: of guys around his local club and been helped him
- 6:35Speaker 3: out as well.
- 6:36Speaker 2: But this guy is an absolute weapon.
- 6:38Speaker 3: He's a raw talent. Is he too young nineteen years
- 6:43Speaker 3: of age? I don't believe he is. I don't believe
- 6:45Speaker 3: he's too young. I mean, age is just a number.
- 6:49Speaker 3: And then the other side all the conundrum that you've
- 6:51Speaker 3: got if you're talking about age, how old is too old?
- 6:54Speaker 3: So he's a Cameron Bancroft. Now too old is a
- 6:58Speaker 3: Marcus Harris? You know some not too old? Is Australia
- 7:02Speaker 3: better off going to guys in their late twenties early
- 7:05Speaker 3: thirties and hoping for a couple of more couple of
- 7:09Speaker 3: quality seasons or he looked to the youth and I
- 7:12Speaker 3: think what they potentially should do is. Look at a
- 7:15Speaker 3: guy like Sam Conscis because he's got a wonderful technique.
- 7:18Speaker 3: He's definitely a player of the future. It's only a
- 7:20Speaker 3: matter of time until, in my opinion, untill he plays
- 7:22Speaker 3: for Australia.
- 7:23Speaker 2: So why not get him in now? But also give
- 7:25Speaker 2: him the freedom.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Don't say if you don't score runs in your first Test,
- 7:29Speaker 3: you're out. Give him that confidence and say, mate, you've
- 7:31Speaker 3: got the whole Australian summer back yourself ten innings.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I can promise you he will.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Get some runs if he's going with the confidence. That
- 7:40Speaker 3: would be my first pick. Second option I've got might
- 7:43Speaker 3: sound a bit crazy, but we've heard about bas ball
- 7:46Speaker 3: and Andrew McDonald as you mentioned in that question as well.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Why not bison ball.
- 7:53Speaker 3: What about Mitchell Marsh at the top of the order
- 7:56Speaker 3: to go out and try and dominate, Because.
- 7:58Speaker 2: If Australia can just blow into your.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Way for one Test and if Mitchell Marsh comes off,
- 8:03Speaker 3: even if it's one out of the five innings, that
- 8:06Speaker 3: to me could be the difference between winning and losing
- 8:08Speaker 3: a series.
- 8:08Speaker 2: So that's the option as well.
- 8:10Speaker 3: They could go that's super aggressive, a bit like that
- 8:13Speaker 3: David Warner model. At the top of the innings, get
- 8:15Speaker 3: Mitchell marsh Up there, or potentially go with a you
- 8:20Speaker 3: know like young Sam who's just an absolute quality talent.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Well, I think there's a couple of great things to
- 8:25Speaker 1: touch on there, but let's just focus initially just on Sam.
- 8:30Speaker 1: We've heard that he's a young guy who's willing to
- 8:33Speaker 1: take advice. You talk about him working with Shane Watson.
- 8:35Speaker 1: He asks questions, he looks for guidance, and he's constantly
- 8:39Speaker 1: looking to improve his game, which I guess you would
- 8:41Speaker 1: hope as a teenager.
- 8:43Speaker 4: What sets him.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Apart from the three sort of more established openers in
- 8:48Speaker 1: your mind? Is it just simply the youth? And the
- 8:50Speaker 1: other thing is do you put pressure on a young
- 8:53Speaker 1: player to come in?
- 8:54Speaker 4: You said age is just a number.
- 8:56Speaker 1: He's played six first class matches or he's in his
- 8:58Speaker 1: sixth first class match at the same What do you
- 9:01Speaker 1: love about him?
- 9:02Speaker 3: Well, I like the fact that he is so young
- 9:05Speaker 3: in his career and he's dominating so far, which is
- 9:08Speaker 3: good because it tells you that he's not being overwhelmed.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I think sometimes the longer that you lead a guy
- 9:16Speaker 3: or a girl in cricket form and say it's going
- 9:19Speaker 3: to happen eventually. You know, you give us three or
- 9:22Speaker 3: four good seasons and then you might get your opportunity.
- 9:26Speaker 3: It's a tough one, mate, because if we look back
- 9:28Speaker 3: to Mike Cussey, he had to earn his stripes. He
- 9:31Speaker 3: played up until the age I think thirty and then
- 9:34Speaker 3: finally got his opportunity to debut for Australia. So there'd
- 9:37Speaker 3: be people saying he's got to earn his stripes. He's
- 9:39Speaker 3: got to score runs. Marcus Harris has been scoring runs.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Kevin Bancroft has been the league run scorer in Shefford
- 9:44Speaker 3: Shield for a.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Number of seasons.
- 9:46Speaker 3: I think if they would have gone with but if
- 9:49Speaker 3: they do go with Bancroft, they should have gone with
- 9:51Speaker 3: him maybe two years ago and have the opportunity, which
- 9:54Speaker 3: is the reason why I think that may go this way.
- 9:57Speaker 3: The thing that I think is different between him and
- 10:00Speaker 3: other plays is because he's got that youth. He doesn't
- 10:04Speaker 3: get overwhelmed and he's got no you know, sometimes you
- 10:08Speaker 3: can get overtrained, and I think if you're overtrained, you
- 10:10Speaker 3: can get nervous and you can worry about all those
- 10:13Speaker 3: little things that go wrong. The youth of today just
- 10:16Speaker 3: come in and play with freedom. Jake Fraser mcgirk's another
- 10:20Speaker 3: guy that is a terrific play just goes out and
- 10:23Speaker 3: sees the ball, hits the ball for six and that's
- 10:25Speaker 3: the quality and why we love the youth coming through.
- 10:27Speaker 3: So for that reason I would be going get the
- 10:30Speaker 3: guy in, but he's not all just get out there
- 10:33Speaker 3: and try and smack every ball for four. He's got
- 10:34Speaker 3: a beautiful technique. He likes to bat time. I have
- 10:38Speaker 3: spent some time with him recently, just a couple of
- 10:41Speaker 3: a couple of weeks ago, had a good chat to
- 10:43Speaker 3: him and he's just got a good head on his
- 10:45Speaker 3: shoulder as he comes from a lovely family, got a
- 10:47Speaker 3: good upbringing, so he's got all all the makings of
- 10:50Speaker 3: a you know, a wonderful Test batsman in the future,
- 10:53Speaker 3: whether it's this tournament, this series coming up or down
- 10:57Speaker 3: the track'll you know, I think he'll definitely play for Australia.
- 11:00Speaker 1: You touched on Mitch Marsh and the wild cud option
- 11:03Speaker 1: with Cameron Green being ruled out for the summer, with
- 11:06Speaker 1: the with the stress fractories in the back and the
- 11:07Speaker 1: operation understandably, where do we look at in terms of
- 11:11Speaker 1: all rounders if marsh for example, was promoted. Sean Abbott
- 11:15Speaker 1: bowl particularly well yesterday. Is it a bowling all round
- 11:18Speaker 1: against Victoria he took four wickets. Is it a bowling
- 11:20Speaker 1: all rounder you think they would look for. Is it
- 11:22Speaker 1: a Bo Webster who's been so good at domestic cricket
- 11:25Speaker 1: in the last couple of years. Aaron Hardy's clearly been
- 11:28Speaker 1: in the mix on the radar for some time. Or
- 11:33Speaker 1: do we rely on a Marnus Levishane who's bowling and
- 11:35Speaker 1: should Marnus be bowling?
- 11:36Speaker 4: Brett and Travis.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Head, who we see has been a really handy sort
- 11:41Speaker 1: of bowler in the in the in the short form cricket.
- 11:43Speaker 4: What do we look at there?
- 11:44Speaker 1: Do you think in terms of Cameron greenan and his
- 11:47Speaker 1: absence and how we look to replace his I suppose
- 11:51Speaker 1: his deeds in the field and with the bat and bowl.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Well, the thing with Cameron Green is that he's such
- 11:57Speaker 3: like an amazing player. He's almost a two person player
- 12:02Speaker 3: in the team. You know, he can bat in anywhere
- 12:04Speaker 3: in the top five. He can bowl with a brand
- 12:06Speaker 3: new ball. He's tall, he's quick, he's athletic in the
- 12:09Speaker 3: field right NC Gully got great hands, so he's the
- 12:12Speaker 3: one stop shot for Australia. Unfortunately he's out with the
- 12:15Speaker 3: back injury now, so he'll have to sort of get.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Back in and do that rehab like guys to have
- 12:19Speaker 2: to do.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And most bowlers unfortunately will get injured at some stage.
- 12:24Speaker 2: But it does leave a big hole.
- 12:25Speaker 3: And those names that you mentioned are definitely on my
- 12:30Speaker 3: hit list as well. You know, you think of Bo Webster,
- 12:33Speaker 3: you know, obviously a big, powerful hitter, a bit like
- 12:36Speaker 3: the Camon Green Mold. You know, he bats and he bowls.
- 12:39Speaker 3: He's got good hands as well catch as well on
- 12:41Speaker 3: the slips. Aaron Hardy, which I think unfairly has been
- 12:46Speaker 3: targeted as a batting all round a lot to see
- 12:48Speaker 3: more of these bowling I think he's actually a quality
- 12:51Speaker 3: quality bowler as well, and he has taken wickets in
- 12:53Speaker 3: every format of the game. He would definitely be in contention.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Sean Abbott, as you mentioned picking up Forfar just a
- 13:00Speaker 3: couple of days ago, is also a handularer or a
- 13:03Speaker 3: batsman as well. So Australias sport for choice, which is
- 13:07Speaker 3: good and bad because if there's only one person that's
- 13:10Speaker 3: got that opportunity, normally that put all their eggs in
- 13:13Speaker 3: one basket and they go, right, this is who we're
- 13:15Speaker 3: going to go with.
- 13:16Speaker 2: We're going to invest in this person.
- 13:18Speaker 3: So unfortunately, if the next door rounder, the next cab
- 13:21Speaker 3: off the rank isn't successful in the first.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Game or two. From a selection point of view, the
- 13:26Speaker 2: easy option.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Is, well, we've got two or three other guys that
- 13:29Speaker 3: could feel that same role. There might be a batting
- 13:31Speaker 3: all rounder or a bowling all rounder. So unfortunately for Australia,
- 13:35Speaker 3: the issue is they've got three or four quality all
- 13:39Speaker 3: rounders that can all feel that gap. I think that
- 13:42Speaker 3: if you went with any one of those three that
- 13:44Speaker 3: we've just mentioned, I don't think Australia would been a
- 13:47Speaker 3: bad spot.
- 13:47Speaker 1: We talk about the I suppose quickly on Steve Smith
- 13:51Speaker 1: moving back down to for do you think that's a
- 13:53Speaker 1: wise and good move. We know that he either was
- 13:55Speaker 1: some criticism about him as opener, but he now you
- 14:00Speaker 1: look at it, he was probably average I think twenty eight,
- 14:02Speaker 1: and I think Osmond was a top through the four
- 14:05Speaker 1: Tests where he played against the Wissindis and then against
- 14:08Speaker 1: New Zealand. I think he averaged twenty eight as an opener.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Orsman was averaging thirty one. So he wasn't that bad
- 14:13Speaker 1: at the top of the order. But at number four,
- 14:15Speaker 1: where do you see Is that the right move?
- 14:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean get getting back to where he knows
- 14:20Speaker 3: and that's the thing he's averaging sixty. I think at
- 14:22Speaker 3: number four he tried to do the right thing by
- 14:25Speaker 3: the team. You know, they were lacking a batsman. They
- 14:27Speaker 3: didn't have a lot of opportunity back then. They could
- 14:29Speaker 3: have gone with you know, like a Bancroft back then
- 14:32Speaker 3: and kept them at number four. That presented itself that
- 14:35Speaker 3: opportunity and he took it. Probably didn't work out the
- 14:37Speaker 3: way that he wanted to, and I think he's better
- 14:40Speaker 3: suited to come in at number four.
- 14:42Speaker 2: It just feels better. I think that's his natural game.
- 14:46Speaker 3: And it's weird because Australia can be two for two
- 14:49Speaker 3: for ten, so people would say, well, hang on, he's
- 14:51Speaker 3: batting the first two or three hours anyway, what's the difference.
- 14:55Speaker 2: It's the mindset. It's the way that he believes he
- 14:58Speaker 2: has to score runs.
- 14:59Speaker 3: He can take it time facing that brand new ball,
- 15:02Speaker 3: and I know, bowling with a brand new ball, the
- 15:04Speaker 3: first two o's is crucially if you get it right,
- 15:06Speaker 3: you can take wickets. If batsman gets through the first two, three,
- 15:10Speaker 3: four overs, it's a different feel because the ball losers sheen,
- 15:14Speaker 3: it hasn't as much in the wicket. Definitely, the right
- 15:18Speaker 3: option gets Steven Smith back to where he's scoring runs.
- 15:22Speaker 3: He might take that average of sixty up to seventy
- 15:24Speaker 3: or eighty, who knows.
- 15:25Speaker 1: And I was going to say he's within range of
- 15:27Speaker 1: ten thousand Test runs. It's a pretty remarkable career, it.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Is, and he'll be alongside after he finishes the likes
- 15:35Speaker 3: of Bradman. You know this, this guy is world class.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Steven Smith has been a great leader for Australia, a
- 15:41Speaker 3: great scene man. I can speak personally. I've known him
- 15:44Speaker 3: for his whole career and love playing with him. I
- 15:47Speaker 3: love the energy. Trains as hard as anyone. And what
- 15:51Speaker 3: Stephen Smith gets in terms of what he will get
- 15:54Speaker 3: out of cricket is exactly what he's put in. And he's,
- 15:57Speaker 3: as I said, you know, one of the hardest workers.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Deserves everything that comes his way.
- 16:02Speaker 1: One quick one before we move to the Indian So
- 16:04Speaker 1: you know so well, just with the fast bowlers and
- 16:07Speaker 1: the five Tests, it's a heavy load. With the three
- 16:10Speaker 1: champion bowlers in their thirties. How do you see that
- 16:13Speaker 1: playing out for the summer. Do you need someone like
- 16:15Speaker 1: Scott Bowland who's come back in today and he's also
- 16:18Speaker 1: he's obviously he's been thirties, But how do you see
- 16:20Speaker 1: the three bowlers holding up through the five Tests against India?
- 16:26Speaker 2: Yeah, the guy.
- 16:27Speaker 3: I really hope that they don't rest any bowlers because
- 16:32Speaker 3: I'm all for the balls that they pick. Should play
- 16:35Speaker 3: all five games in the Test series. I think it's
- 16:38Speaker 3: the crowded burnt that right. If they're going to go
- 16:40Speaker 3: pay good money, they want to see their best bowlers,
- 16:42Speaker 3: with all due respect to the other players.
- 16:43Speaker 2: That may come in.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Australia blessed with three amazing bowlers and Mitchell Stark, Pat
- 16:49Speaker 3: Cummins and Josh hazel Woods so pending fitness, I think
- 16:54Speaker 3: they'll play all five Tests. It's such an important series
- 16:56Speaker 3: of Border Gavaskar Trophy. It's where it's at now people
- 16:59Speaker 3: want to be a part of. But I just really
- 17:01Speaker 3: hope that they don't hedge their bets and say, well,
- 17:06Speaker 3: we're going to try to stop people getting injured. You know,
- 17:08Speaker 3: of course, if you don't, I use your analogy, if
- 17:10Speaker 3: you park your carr in the garage. You don't need
- 17:12Speaker 3: to take and get its service because it's going to
- 17:14Speaker 3: be nice in pristine, but you've got to get it
- 17:16Speaker 3: out there.
- 17:17Speaker 2: You know, the body is meant to be running in
- 17:19Speaker 2: and having a crack.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, we don't want to see players get
- 17:23Speaker 3: injured and boiling is such an unnatural action, but that's
- 17:26Speaker 3: what you sign up to do. And you know, playing
- 17:28Speaker 3: Test cricket as a fast billery is the exactly where
- 17:32Speaker 3: you know you used to want to be as a cricketer.
- 17:34Speaker 2: So I wish to hope that they played five Test matches.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Now, Brett, has there ever been a better day for
- 17:39Speaker 1: New Zealand cricket. You have the Kiwis winning their first
- 17:44Speaker 1: Test in India in thirty six years, knocking over that
- 17:48Speaker 1: highly vaunted in the in top order for forty six
- 17:51Speaker 1: in the first innings, and then the Kiwi women hadn't
- 17:54Speaker 1: want to match in ten leading into the World Cup,
- 17:57Speaker 1: the T twenty World Cup that's just been completed to
- 17:59Speaker 1: come out of champions at the end being in South Africa.
- 18:02Speaker 1: In the final, we saw Australia's reign of dominancy invincibles
- 18:05Speaker 1: come to an end of the semi final at the
- 18:07Speaker 1: end of at the hands of South Africa.
- 18:09Speaker 4: What a day for keewee cricket.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Just some quick observations on the Women's World Cup before
- 18:13Speaker 1: we move on onto the Indian team. Alyssa Heally missing
- 18:18Speaker 1: was clearly an issue for Australia, but a major major
- 18:22Speaker 1: success for New Zealand.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Yeah, with the skipert Midge, you know, obviously with her
- 18:25Speaker 3: foot injury wasn't it wasn't great time, but unfortunately you
- 18:29Speaker 3: can't you can't predict what's going to happen. It was great,
- 18:33Speaker 3: great for the Kiwi's and Paul South Africa in men's
- 18:37Speaker 3: and women's. Unfortunately they haven't had the best runs in
- 18:39Speaker 3: finals or the best you know wit sort of ratio.
- 18:43Speaker 2: But yeah, great for the Kiwi girls first up to
- 18:45Speaker 2: get their.
- 18:45Speaker 3: First title and geez, the guys played so well to
- 18:50Speaker 3: get injured at the first innings what I think forty
- 18:52Speaker 3: six and then producer, you know, a massive first innings total.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Ravender is so good.
- 18:59Speaker 3: You know, it was just scoring runs and you to
- 19:02Speaker 3: be there at the end and just so for ratching
- 19:05Speaker 3: to get those runs at the end.
- 19:06Speaker 2: It was outstanding. But a great, great weekend for the Kiwis.
- 19:10Speaker 3: But I can promise you when India come to Australia,
- 19:13Speaker 3: even now that they lost that Test against the Kiwis,
- 19:16Speaker 3: when India come for Australia, look out, they're going to
- 19:18Speaker 3: be ready to go.
- 19:18Speaker 4: Well, I was going to ask you about that.
- 19:19Speaker 1: We see with the Indian batting lineup not to forty
- 19:23Speaker 1: six in the first innings, but then in the second
- 19:25Speaker 1: you have ye know, Sapparro's Khan making one hundred and
- 19:30Speaker 1: fifty Risha part almost a century Coli looking dangerous. You've
- 19:34Speaker 1: got that outstanding young batsman Jasul at the top of
- 19:38Speaker 1: the order.
- 19:40Speaker 4: They were a very aggressive attack.
- 19:42Speaker 1: In the past we've had Indians had success in Australia,
- 19:44Speaker 1: someone like Dravid, who, as I said, your second ever
- 19:46Speaker 1: wicket in Test.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Cricket was the wall.
- 19:48Speaker 1: You had Pijara in the last couple of tours here
- 19:51Speaker 1: soaking up a lot of the pressure at the top
- 19:53Speaker 1: of the order. With this Indian batting attack, you know,
- 19:56Speaker 1: quite an aggressive attack. How do you see that holding
- 19:58Speaker 1: up in Australia and with the Keywee's, O'Rourke and Henry
- 20:03Speaker 1: bowling them out for forty six in the first innings,
- 20:04Speaker 1: should the Australian attack take some encouragement from that, or
- 20:08Speaker 1: do you see that top order doing some damage here? Oh?
- 20:11Speaker 3: Look, I think what happened was they look, it was
- 20:15Speaker 3: a wicket that was probably conduced the fast bowling in
- 20:18Speaker 3: that first innings, and they just.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Put the ball in the right spot.
- 20:21Speaker 3: You know, as you mentioned Will Bold particularly well. Henry's
- 20:24Speaker 3: obviously brilliant with the ball and a lot more experienced.
- 20:29Speaker 3: But India they just didn't sort of going to their shell.
- 20:32Speaker 3: And maybe it's that that bass ball that sort of
- 20:35Speaker 3: you know, sort of brushing off on other creators around
- 20:38Speaker 3: the world. I know that India won't be proud of
- 20:41Speaker 3: the way they played. They played some pretty loose shots,
- 20:44Speaker 3: but you've got to get quality and credit to the
- 20:46Speaker 3: bowls as well, because they bowled some beautiful spells.
- 20:49Speaker 2: They bowled fast, they have some short pitch bowling and
- 20:52Speaker 2: timinated the batsman.
- 20:54Speaker 3: And this day and age, you've got India now, which
- 20:57Speaker 3: is a powerhouse that don't want to just bow down
- 21:00Speaker 3: and do what they used to do with all due
- 21:03Speaker 3: respect back in the age of nineties. You know, India
- 21:05Speaker 3: used to be quality players, but they never had They
- 21:08Speaker 3: couldn't find a way to win on every single opportunity.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Now they know how to win and they know they
- 21:13Speaker 3: can beat Australia, they know they can beat the Kiwis,
- 21:16Speaker 3: they know they can beat anyone on any given day.
- 21:18Speaker 3: But unfortunately you've got to weigh up the risk factor
- 21:21Speaker 3: as well. There's times where you've got to go okay,
- 21:23Speaker 3: well maybe the big shots aren't working and maybe just
- 21:26Speaker 3: raining in a little bit. I don't think they sort
- 21:29Speaker 3: of summed up the conditions as quickly as what they
- 21:31Speaker 3: should have done. I think of the second things they
- 21:33Speaker 3: were better, but yeah, it wasn't the case the first.
- 21:36Speaker 1: And now remind you can watch every ball of the
- 21:38Speaker 1: next Test between Indire and New zeal And live on
- 21:41Speaker 1: Fox Cricket and also on KO just on the as well.
- 21:44Speaker 1: What should Australian audiences look forward to with him in
- 21:47Speaker 1: the next over the five Test summer.
- 21:49Speaker 2: He's very flamboyant.
- 21:50Speaker 3: It reminds me a lot of shitner I on Channepoor
- 21:53Speaker 3: from the West Indies of yesterday, like very similar technique.
- 21:58Speaker 3: He's a run machine and he's an aggressive young left
- 22:04Speaker 3: hander that's quite whippy, but also it's great at playing
- 22:08Speaker 3: that crossbat shot. I love a batsman that plays a
- 22:11Speaker 3: cross bat shot. Robert Shalm have been blessed over the
- 22:13Speaker 3: years to see him play. One of the best pullers
- 22:15Speaker 3: in Test cricket. Jacewell looks to score quickly, generally hits
- 22:19Speaker 3: his first ball fall and he'll put the pressure straight
- 22:22Speaker 3: back on Australia.
- 22:23Speaker 2: So if the Aussies.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Don't get their length right up front, don't get their
- 22:28Speaker 3: pace right up front, he can definitely damage them. So
- 22:30Speaker 3: I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes on these wickets. Perth,
- 22:33Speaker 3: though that said, will definitely test them out because as
- 22:37Speaker 3: we know South Asia and in particularly India, when they
- 22:40Speaker 3: come out to Australia, the general is they don't like fast,
- 22:44Speaker 3: bouncy wickets.
- 22:45Speaker 2: They used to be the case.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Now they've got Batsman, as I mentioned before, they could
- 22:49Speaker 3: play that crossbat shot, so they might try and counter that.
- 22:52Speaker 1: How do you we talked about the Australian attack and
- 22:54Speaker 1: not leaving the Ferrari parked in the garage during the summer.
- 22:57Speaker 1: How do you see the Indian attack I suppose through
- 23:01Speaker 1: the Australian summer. You know they went with the two
- 23:03Speaker 1: seamers and the three spinners for the Test against New Zealand.
- 23:08Speaker 1: You know what do we think we see Mohammed Chami
- 23:11Speaker 1: obviously had the ankle issues et cetera. We saw I
- 23:14Speaker 1: think a photo of him bowling to Shuldwin Gel just
- 23:16Speaker 1: on the weekend and he's obviously trying to get back
- 23:18Speaker 1: and improve that fitness and Saraja as such champion bowlers
- 23:24Speaker 1: so outstanding. You know, what do we think will happen?
- 23:27Speaker 1: How do you see that attack sort of performing in
- 23:30Speaker 1: Australia And what sort of format do you see it?
- 23:33Speaker 1: Is it the three seemers?
- 23:35Speaker 4: Do they do? They do they? Who are the spinners?
- 23:37Speaker 4: How do you see it unfolding?
- 23:39Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 23:39Speaker 3: Look they've got obviously Ashwan that plays that that for
- 23:42Speaker 3: he coet even up the bowling. To be fair, you
- 23:44Speaker 3: know he's got approaching six hundred or so Test wickets.
- 23:47Speaker 3: He's got beautiful shapes on your bowls. His spinna can
- 23:50Speaker 3: bowl that brand new ball. But those names that you mentioned,
- 23:55Speaker 3: Muhammed Shamy's got to be fit. I think if India
- 23:57Speaker 3: want to win over here, Muhammed Shemy can definitely hold
- 24:00Speaker 3: the key.
- 24:01Speaker 2: J just bit Borman. We all know how good Boomer is.
- 24:04Speaker 3: He's a guy that can shake the ball both ways.
- 24:07Speaker 3: I think your bowl extremely great with the old ball.
- 24:11Speaker 2: He is a great exponer of reverse swing.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Muhammed Sadaj, you know, it gets that new border talk
- 24:19Speaker 3: and when he presents that scene bowled upright, he gets
- 24:21Speaker 3: the ball.
- 24:22Speaker 2: To shape away.
- 24:23Speaker 3: That's where a stray can nick off and being dangers
- 24:25Speaker 3: certainly on these wickets like Perth, like Adelaide, that can
- 24:29Speaker 3: be conduced with the fast bowling.
- 24:31Speaker 2: So to me, it's that combination.
- 24:34Speaker 3: It's those three bowlers plus Ashman as a spinner, and
- 24:37Speaker 3: then they've got options, you know with guys at the
- 24:39Speaker 3: part time part time spinners that can play a role.
- 24:42Speaker 3: But you've got to have those three quicks firing if
- 24:44Speaker 3: India want to win.
- 24:46Speaker 4: If it isn't Chami, that's fit.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Do you see anyone you know as a depth bowler
- 24:50Speaker 1: or someone that they might pluck from the world. And
- 24:51Speaker 1: we saw your dove sort of reaching exceptional speeds. You're
- 24:55Speaker 1: also the speeds of one hundred and fifty k' is
- 24:58Speaker 1: an hour through the IP else sort of series like THEEP.
- 25:02Speaker 1: He's obviously been a very very talented bollet. Who are
- 25:06Speaker 1: the possible it needs to look forward to if it
- 25:08Speaker 1: isn't Charmi.
- 25:09Speaker 3: The great thing about me having the opportunity to work
- 25:11Speaker 3: on the IPL and you see a lot of Indian creators.
- 25:15Speaker 3: You get to see these young guys coming through the ranks.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Mayank yadav to watch his first game in the IPL
- 25:21Speaker 3: recently earlier this.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Year, back in what early March.
- 25:25Speaker 3: I think it may have been to hit one hundred
- 25:27Speaker 3: and fifty seven k's first up in his first game,
- 25:30Speaker 3: he went off with the side strain.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Unfortunately, his franchise probably brought.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Him back a little bit too early and then did
- 25:37Speaker 3: his side again and then they put him on, put
- 25:39Speaker 3: him on eyes, put him in cotton wall for a
- 25:40Speaker 3: little bit.
- 25:42Speaker 2: But then they literally threw him on the scene when
- 25:44Speaker 2: he was ready to go again.
- 25:45Speaker 3: So the great thing about Indury is that they're not
- 25:48Speaker 3: worried about how much cricket someone's played, how much they
- 25:51Speaker 3: haven't played. A bit like the Sam Concert's what we
- 25:54Speaker 3: spoke about before. If he's ready to go, get him
- 25:56Speaker 3: in there. And I actually loved that theory because one
- 26:01Speaker 3: thing I could promise you is that batsman raka around
- 26:03Speaker 3: about that one hundred and thirty five to one hundred
- 26:05Speaker 3: and forty K markets when they're bowling high one fifties.
- 26:09Speaker 3: I don't care who it is. Now one has to
- 26:10Speaker 3: face bowling over one hundred and fifty k's so, yes,
- 26:14Speaker 3: she can be a little bit of radick. Yes she
- 26:16Speaker 3: can bowl short and wide and get punished.
- 26:19Speaker 2: But he looks as though that he's got the complete package.
- 26:22Speaker 2: He's green, he's raw, and he freshened the scene.
- 26:24Speaker 3: I'd be in clad and to go with him. If
- 26:26Speaker 3: if Muhamed Shemi's not ready, at least get him in
- 26:29Speaker 3: the squad, get him around the team, and if something
- 26:32Speaker 3: happens and it presents itself, he might get that opportunity.
- 26:35Speaker 2: And I think he'd do pretty well in these Australian wigts.
- 26:38Speaker 1: First first testa to op the stadium. Not quite the
- 26:41Speaker 1: bounce of the Whacker, but it's still got some teeth in.
- 26:43Speaker 3: It, still bouncy anything even first saw his bouncy. Yeah,
- 26:47Speaker 3: the whacker used to be a graveyard sometimes for fast
- 26:50Speaker 3: battlers too, because everyone saw the carry and see ly
- 26:55Speaker 3: go up there and take that wonderful catch, you know
- 26:57Speaker 3: with the batsman leaves on length rather than line. But
- 27:01Speaker 3: the trick to bowling in person is not to bowl
- 27:04Speaker 3: too short. You've got to pitch the ball up. You
- 27:05Speaker 3: to buy a lot fuller than what you expect. So
- 27:07Speaker 3: that's where a lot of players and I've come unstuck
- 27:10Speaker 3: many occasions as at most fast bowlers. So the Indian
- 27:14Speaker 3: bowls will have to make sure they pitch their length
- 27:16Speaker 3: up around that five and a half meter mark to
- 27:19Speaker 3: induce that nick. But yeah, when you've got raw pace
- 27:22Speaker 3: as like a Mayn Giada, he actually might suit that wicket.
- 27:27Speaker 4: Well, Brett.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Look, it's been an absolute pleasure to have you on
- 27:30Speaker 1: Fox forgets to follow on. You've been a member of
- 27:32Speaker 1: the Fox Cricket family for a long long time. You've
- 27:35Speaker 1: seen so much of India cricket and obviously, as I said,
- 27:40Speaker 1: twenty five years since that fantastic debut. It's a wonderful
- 27:43Speaker 1: to have your board and thanks so much for being
- 27:45Speaker 1: a guest on the follow on.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Absolute pleasure and how lucky.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Viewers Fox this year we've got all India, were England
- 27:54Speaker 3: coming next year, then India coming again. It's going to
- 27:56Speaker 3: be three amazing seasons, so I can't
