- 0:00You're listening to the Play Therapy Podcast with Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:04your source for centered and focused play therapy coaching.
- 0:08Hi,
- 0:08I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:09The Kid Counselor.
- 0:10This is the Play Therapy Podcast where you get
- 0:12a master class in child-centered play therapy
- 0:15and practical support and application for your
- 0:17work with children and their families.
- 0:19Today's episode,
- 0:20I am answering a question from John in Maryland.
- 0:23Different John than last time.
- 0:26We've had a lot of John's emailing lately.
- 0:27Hello to the Johns out there.
- 0:29I appreciate y'all.
- 0:30So,
- 0:31this is about what to do when a child makes something in your playroom
- 0:35and how to handle that,
- 0:37you know,
- 0:37just some thoughts on the process of
- 0:40when a child is working on a project per se.
- 0:43Does that stay in the playroom?
- 0:44Does it go home,
- 0:45etc.
- 0:45etc.
- 0:46So,
- 0:46really helpful question,
- 0:47John.
- 0:47Thank you.
- 0:47I,
- 0:48I actually,
- 0:48I'm realizing that it says our staff.
- 0:50So,
- 0:51John and staff,
- 0:52this is for y'all.
- 0:53Thanks for the question.
- 0:55Before I dive in,
- 0:56Hey,
- 0:56I wanted to let y'all know,
- 0:57I know I've been talking about the live events
- 0:59and some people have been asking questions about the content,
- 1:02so I felt like it would be helpful to let y'all know.
- 1:05So,
- 1:05the Indiana event outside of Indy
- 1:08and the New Jersey event in New Brunswick,
- 1:10that's gonna be exactly the same content.
- 1:13So,
- 1:13if you're closer to Indy,
- 1:14you're closer to Jersey,
- 1:16you're gonna get the same exact content regardless of where you go.
- 1:19The Field of Dreams event is going to be completely different content.
- 1:23So,
- 1:23the Tampa event
- 1:25in January of 2027,
- 1:27different content,
- 1:28Indy and Jersey,
- 1:30same exact content,
- 1:31and it's completely new.
- 1:32I've never taught it before,
- 1:34new
- 1:35CEU stuff just for this event.
- 1:37Well,
- 1:38these two events,
- 1:38I suppose.
- 1:39And it's going to be the why
- 1:42behind
- 1:43what we do in the model.
- 1:45And if we don't understand why the skills exist and the purpose that they serve,
- 1:51we will never achieve mastery.
- 1:52So,
- 1:53kind of a higher level
- 1:55CCPT
- 1:56why behind the model kind of
- 1:59weekend.
- 1:59So,
- 2:00really excited about that VIP event on Friday,
- 2:02conference on Saturday,
- 2:04and
- 2:05we are doing
- 2:06a podcast meetup
- 2:08in Jersey on the 18th.
- 2:10So,
- 2:11that means you,
- 2:13since you're listening to the podcast as we speak,
- 2:15on October 18th,
- 2:17we're gonna do a podcast meetup.
- 2:19So,
- 2:20if you're able to get there,
- 2:21I would love to have you.
- 2:22So,
- 2:23check the show notes.
- 2:23You'll be able to RSVP for that.
- 2:25There's a meetup in Seattle and Denver as well.
- 2:28show notes for that.
- 2:30Come to the event,
- 2:31show notes for that.
- 2:32Just go to the show notes,
- 2:33the moral of that story.
- 2:34OK.
- 2:35So,
- 2:35let me read parts of the question and then we will tackle this together.
- 2:39Thanks so much,
- 2:40so much for all the help and direction you've shared on your podcast.
- 2:43Y'all are very welcome.
- 2:44Our staff is wondering if you allow children to
- 2:46take projects home that they do in session.
- 2:48For example,
- 2:49pictures that they color or paint or craft projects that they do.
- 2:52Some children want to color or paint pictures to give or show to their family.
- 2:56What principles should help guide us in this?
- 3:00That's question one.
- 3:01Now,
- 3:02we'll tackle the second one.
- 3:03It seems that sometimes a child feels the need to spend quite a
- 3:06bit of time in doing things like I described to take home.
- 3:09Does that detract from the child using the time
- 3:12in CCPT in a better way?
- 3:15Or what about the responses they get from home
- 3:17with parents or siblings that may be negative?
- 3:20So,
- 3:20I guess technically that's kind of 3 questions,
- 3:22but two are related.
- 3:23So,
- 3:23we'll tackle each one.
- 3:25All right,
- 3:25the first one.
- 3:27It is a pretty standard expectation in a child-centered playroom
- 3:31that if the child makes something.
- 3:34So,
- 3:35not that they use materials in the playroom
- 3:37that are meant for staying in the playroom.
- 3:39So they might make a Lego creation,
- 3:41but Legos are for staying in the room.
- 3:42They might build a tower with blocks,
- 3:44but the blocks are for staying in the room.
- 3:46They might build a marble maze,
- 3:47but the marble maze is for staying in the room.
- 3:49So
- 3:49we're talking about an actual project of crafting materials.
- 3:54So painting,
- 3:54drawing,
- 3:55coloring.
- 3:57Making something out of your paper towel tubes
- 3:59and your toilet paper tubes and all that.
- 4:02Something that they construct,
- 4:03if you will,
- 4:04out of craft materials.
- 4:07One of the very important components of a CCPT playroom is we do not keep and display
- 4:14what kids make in the playroom.
- 4:16So,
- 4:17I see that actually more regularly than I wish were the case.
- 4:21A lot of CCPTs will display
- 4:24what kids make
- 4:25in their playroom.
- 4:26And that goes against everything CCPT is about.
- 4:30Landreth talks about
- 4:33what a child makes
- 4:34in a session.
- 4:36is equivalent to
- 4:38their psychotherapy notes.
- 4:40That was their work.
- 4:42That was their.
- 4:45Demonstration and elaboration and communication
- 4:49of what they are working through,
- 4:51what's going on for them,
- 4:53that's personal and private,
- 4:55and to put that on display in
- 4:57the playroom is a violation of confidentiality,
- 5:002,
- 5:02It keeps the playroom.
- 5:05In a non-neutral state.
- 5:06In other words,
- 5:07another kid comes in
- 5:09and they see
- 5:10that
- 5:11something else made something
- 5:12that can be swaying.
- 5:13It can be competitive.
- 5:15It can be jealousy.
- 5:17It can be convincing
- 5:18like,
- 5:18oh well,
- 5:19they made that,
- 5:19watch this.
- 5:20I'm going to make this,
- 5:21and now all of a sudden we're in this spiral
- 5:23where
- 5:24kids are coming in and the playroom is no longer theirs.
- 5:27The whole premise of CCPT
- 5:29is.
- 5:30Every child that comes in,
- 5:32they believe and view the playroom as theirs because it is.
- 5:36You don't want artwork on the walls.
- 5:38You don't want decorations up.
- 5:39You don't want,
- 5:41when I say artwork,
- 5:42that's probably
- 5:43double meaning.
- 5:44We don't want a child's artwork.
- 5:46We also don't want artwork that you buy in a store.
- 5:49You don't want paintings on the wall.
- 5:50You don't want sayings on the wall.
- 5:52You don't want a mural on the wall.
- 5:54Why?
- 5:54Because now the child can't make it theirs.
- 5:57You've made it yours.
- 5:59And so the premise of a CCPT playroom is that
- 6:03it's bare and neutral on purpose.
- 6:06So we're never going to,
- 6:08even if a child asks,
- 6:09we're never going to keep artwork in the playroom.
- 6:12So,
- 6:12I needed to make that very clear.
- 6:14As far as what if they want to take it home.
- 6:17That is up to them.
- 6:20They get to choose whether they take it home or whether you can keep it.
- 6:23So for us,
- 6:24we have paper notes.
- 6:25So it's very easy for me to put something that the child makes in the folder,
- 6:29and I keep it for the child.
- 6:31And that just stays in their file.
- 6:34If they choose to take it home,
- 6:36it's an empowerment choice that you can give.
- 6:39Oh,
- 6:40you made that and you'd like to keep it.
- 6:41You can choose for me to keep it for you or you can choose to take it home with you.
- 6:44Which do you choose?
- 6:46And
- 6:48the impression
- 6:50that parents need to have
- 6:52is that what they bring out
- 6:55is
- 6:56part of their work.
- 6:57And this is something that we discuss ahead of time when we first meet with parents,
- 7:00for example,
- 7:01when we set expectations of
- 7:04when the child finishes their play session
- 7:07and they come out to the lobby,
- 7:08a parent does not say,
- 7:09Did you have fun?
- 7:11We have to coach parents on that because
- 7:13that's a standard question that they ask
- 7:15kids whenever they've been apart from them.
- 7:17They get home from school.
- 7:17Did you have fun at school?
- 7:19They get back from baseball and they say,
- 7:20did you have fun at practice?
- 7:22That's a standard
- 7:23parenting response.
- 7:24They don't know any better.
- 7:26And we certainly don't ever want a child to be asked if they had fun in play therapy
- 7:31because,
- 7:33first of all,
- 7:33we don't ask kids questions.
- 7:34That's just a,
- 7:35a principle of CCPT.
- 7:37Second of all,
- 7:38play therapy is not fun.
- 7:39And it's not supposed to be fun,
- 7:42and that puts a child in a very awkward position because
- 7:46when they're dealing with their junk
- 7:48and all their stuff's coming up,
- 7:49that's not pleasant at all,
- 7:51certainly not fun.
- 7:52And what's a kid supposed to lie and say,
- 7:53yeah,
- 7:54it was fun when it wasn't,
- 7:55or are they supposed to say,
- 7:56no,
- 7:56it wasn't fun,
- 7:56and then a parent goes,
- 7:57why not?
- 7:58And then it just evolves into this whole conversation that shouldn't be happening.
- 8:01So
- 8:02likewise,
- 8:03when we help parents understand what to say,
- 8:05when they
- 8:06Meet a child in the lobby after a play session,
- 8:08we also help them understand how to respond
- 8:12if a child brings something home.
- 8:14And likely that means that we have to help them understand that we don't
- 8:17use praise,
- 8:18meaning evaluative words.
- 8:21And we don't pry and poke into what they did and why and what,
- 8:25what is this and what did you draw here and
- 8:27it's just a neutral factual acknowledgment.
- 8:29Oh,
- 8:30you made something and you're bringing it home.
- 8:32But again,
- 8:33that has to be set as expectations when we first meet with parents.
- 8:36So,
- 8:37I think that kind of answers your third question as
- 8:39well as your first because they were kind of related.
- 8:42They absolutely can choose to take stuff home.
- 8:45We also absolutely have to help parents understand
- 8:48how to respond to those kinds of things.
- 8:50And then that would address the what if
- 8:52they get negative responses from their family.
- 8:54They wouldn't
- 8:55if we've already discussed that
- 8:57and helped parents understand how to remain neutral
- 9:00and just factual about anything that
- 9:04comes up from therapy.
- 9:06Sometimes kids will say what happened in therapy as well.
- 9:08Sometimes they're driving home and they'll say,
- 9:10I played basketball with Ms.
- 9:11Brenna today.
- 9:13A parent should
- 9:15know how to respond to that.
- 9:16And that comes from that initial parent
- 9:18consultation that you set expectations and you're clear
- 9:21on giving them some scripts
- 9:23on how to engage
- 9:24and things like that.
- 9:25OK,
- 9:26so now let's tackle the final question.
- 9:29Our staff sometimes thinks that the child feels the need to spend
- 9:33quite a bit of time in doing things like I described.
- 9:36Does that detract from the child using the time and CCPT in a better way?
- 9:40All right,
- 9:41so,
- 9:42I,
- 9:42I'm going to
- 9:43tread gently here,
- 9:44but I'm gonna call out the notion of this question,
- 9:47and here's why.
- 9:49The way the child chooses to spend their time in CCPT.
- 9:53Is the way
- 9:55that they spend their time in CCPT.
- 9:58There's no worse way,
- 9:59better way,
- 10:00ideal way,
- 10:01terrible way.
- 10:03They just sat there the whole time.
- 10:05I hate that word so much.
- 10:07We,
- 10:08that question is all kinds of agenda driven,
- 10:11and I know y'all don't mean for it to be,
- 10:13but to say,
- 10:14should they be spending it in a different way,
- 10:16there's no shoulds in CCPT.
- 10:18There's no better way to spend their time.
- 10:21What the child does when they come in is exactly what they need to do.
- 10:26And the unconditional acceptance says
- 10:29whether you draw the whole time,
- 10:30whether you
- 10:32do nothing the whole time,
- 10:33whether you speak the whole time,
- 10:34whether you don't say a word the whole time,
- 10:36whether you lay down and fall asleep,
- 10:38whether you jump around like a banshee,
- 10:40whether you,
- 10:41whatever it is.
- 10:43That's exactly what the child needed to do
- 10:46because it comes back to we trust the child.
- 10:48The child knows what they need to work on.
- 10:50They know the pace in which they can work on it.
- 10:53They know the way they need to work on it.
- 10:56So the kids that come in
- 10:58and spend quite a bit of time doing craft projects,
- 11:00it's therapeutically valuable.
- 11:03It's necessary.
- 11:04It's important.
- 11:06There's no
- 11:07more valuable thing they should have been doing.
- 11:10When they're ready to move on to something else and do other work,
- 11:13they will,
- 11:14but this is the work that they're doing right now.
- 11:17And so this is something that a lot of us find ourselves doing and,
- 11:21and we don't mean to,
- 11:22and sometimes we're not even aware of it.
- 11:24We throw out questions that are absolutely driven by an agenda,
- 11:28and the agenda is,
- 11:30well,
- 11:30you need to be playing out something more important,
- 11:32or you need to be getting into deeper work,
- 11:34or you need to be diving into all the stuff that your parents have talked to me about,
- 11:38or
- 11:39you just colored the whole time.
- 11:40That couldn't have been that helpful.
- 11:43That
- 11:43has expectation
- 11:45tied to it.
- 11:46I have an expectation that you're going to fill in the blank.
- 11:51And so
- 11:52in full adherence and full fidelity,
- 11:55we look at anything a child does.
- 11:59If they color the whole time,
- 12:01whole 50 minutes
- 12:02for 6 sessions straight,
- 12:04you are 6 sessions in
- 12:06a child coloring for the entire 50 minutes.
- 12:11You go,
- 12:12wow,
- 12:12look at the work this kid's doing.
- 12:15Wow,
- 12:16this kid is
- 12:17working through stuff,
- 12:18doing exactly what he or she needs to do.
- 12:21This is exactly where the kid is meant to be right now.
- 12:25We accept it
- 12:26because that's CCPT.
- 12:28And let's go back to
- 12:30Landreth's quote,
- 12:32We have expectancy,
- 12:34not expectations.
- 12:36We're expectant.
- 12:37I know there's more to come.
- 12:39I know the child's going to tackle other things.
- 12:42I know that we're early on and right now the child needs to feel safe
- 12:47and the child needs to feel competent and the
- 12:49child is doing something that they can handle.
- 12:52OK,
- 12:54but
- 12:54I know that that's not gonna be permanent.
- 12:56I know that's not gonna be forever,
- 12:58so
- 12:58I'm expectant.
- 13:01But I have no expectations,
- 13:03and that's where we live,
- 13:04y'all.
- 13:04That's why CCPT is so hard,
- 13:07because we embrace ambiguity.
- 13:10We embrace the lack of control,
- 13:12we embrace the unknown.
- 13:14And ultimately we trust the child,
- 13:17we trust the process,
- 13:19and we trust that CCPT works.
- 13:22So we just rest in that.
- 13:24Whatever a child is doing
- 13:25or not doing,
- 13:27saying or not saying,
- 13:28playing or not playing,
- 13:29whatever is going on,
- 13:31they're looking at you cross-eyed with their tongue out and they're patting
- 13:33their head and they're rubbing their stomach for 50 minutes straight,
- 13:36and you're like,
- 13:37Huh,
- 13:37this is the strangest session I've ever been in.
- 13:40It's right where the child is meant to be,
- 13:42and they're doing exactly what they're meant to be doing.
- 13:45And we unconditionally accept it because that's being CCPT.
- 13:50So,
- 13:51John,
- 13:51et al,
- 13:52thank you so much for the email.
- 13:53I hope that that was helpful.

- 13:55I'm so grateful to each and every one of you.
- 13:57Truly,
- 13:58y'all are the highlight of my week.
