Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Buttigieg slams Trump, Hegseths Iran war approach
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Secretary Hegseth went so far as to say that the
- 0:02Speaker 1: strait of horror moves is open. Other than the fact
- 0:05Speaker 1: that there would be fire against vehicles transiting the strait,
- 0:09Speaker 1: this is clearly amateur hour.
- 0:11Speaker 2: As the war in.
- 0:12Speaker 3: The Middle East escalates, my next guest says that we've
- 0:14Speaker 3: seen this movie before joining us now former Transportation Secretary
- 0:17Speaker 3: and Afghan war veteran Pete Buddha Jeddge. I want to
- 0:20Speaker 3: play something that Defense Secretary Pete Hegsath said earlier this
- 0:23Speaker 3: week about how this war differs from the wars in
- 0:26Speaker 3: Iraq and Afghanistan.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Take a listen, this is not two thousand and three.
- 0:32Speaker 4: This is not endless nation building under those types of
- 0:37Speaker 4: quagmires we saw under Bush or Obama. It's not even close.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Our generation of soldier will not let that happen again.
- 0:47Speaker 3: You're also a part of that generation, a soldier. What's
- 0:49Speaker 3: your take?
- 0:51Speaker 1: What I'm worried about is not the soldiers and the
- 0:54Speaker 1: people who are serving. What I'm worried about is their
- 0:58Speaker 1: political leadership, like Pete Haggs than Donald Trump. You know,
- 1:01Speaker 1: we lived through a war that was sold to us
- 1:03Speaker 1: on false pretenses. When I was younger. This war has
- 1:07Speaker 1: not been sold on any pretense. The President just went
- 1:10Speaker 1: ahead and did it. Here's the biggest thing that has
- 1:13Speaker 1: not changed since the war in Afghanistan or the war
- 1:15Speaker 1: in Iraq. The biggest thing that has not changed is
- 1:18Speaker 1: who pays the price. We have now seen thirteen American
- 1:21Speaker 1: service members killed. And when you prepare to go to war,
- 1:24Speaker 1: the thing you think about, the thing you most dread
- 1:27Speaker 1: is your family being the ones to get that knock
- 1:30Speaker 1: on the door. More than a dozen American families have
- 1:32Speaker 1: now gotten that knock on the door, and the President
- 1:35Speaker 1: has basically assured us that there will be more where
- 1:38Speaker 1: that came from. And while they're paying the ultimate price,
- 1:41Speaker 1: every American is paying some price right now. Mortgage rates
- 1:44Speaker 1: are up because of this war. Food is going to
- 1:47Speaker 1: be more expensive because of this war. And of course
- 1:49Speaker 1: the price of gas that we're paying at the pump
- 1:51Speaker 1: is more expensive because of this war.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So the Trump administration argues that they needed to take
- 1:56Speaker 3: action to take out Iran's nuclear weapons program and Iran's
- 1:59Speaker 3: ballistic missile because when they came into office, the Biden administration,
- 2:03Speaker 3: your administration had done nothing in four years to stop
- 2:07Speaker 3: and run from building a nuclear weapon, developing ballistic missiles,
- 2:09Speaker 3: funding terrorism around the world. Are they wrong, Yes, of
- 2:15Speaker 3: course they're wrong.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I mean, for one thing, the president assured us that
- 2:17Speaker 1: the nuclear program. President Trump assured us that the nuclear
- 2:20Speaker 1: program was, in his words, obliterated just a few months ago.
- 2:24Speaker 1: And let's also remember that in the past, Iran's nuclear
- 2:27Speaker 1: program was contained without a shot being fired. I think
- 2:31Speaker 1: President Trump thought he could get a better deal than
- 2:34Speaker 1: the Obama administration did. He failed to get that better deal,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and he went off and launched a war without planning,
- 2:40Speaker 1: without being ready for even some of the most basic things.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I mean, it is a certainty that the military would
- 2:46Speaker 1: have advised him that the straits of Horrmus would have
- 2:48Speaker 1: been closed, that that was a likely scenario. And yet
- 2:52Speaker 1: they're talking about this and clearly acting as though they
- 2:55Speaker 1: didn't think this would happen. The Secretary of Hegseth went
- 2:57Speaker 1: so far as to say that the Strait of Horrmus
- 3:00Speaker 1: is open, other than the fact that there would be
- 3:03Speaker 1: fire against vehicles transiting the strait. This is clearly amateur
- 3:07Speaker 1: hour at the Pentagon and in the White House. And
- 3:10Speaker 1: again the price is being paid by all of us.
- 3:13Speaker 1: You can also just tell from the administration's attitude towards
- 3:17Speaker 1: this war, the fact that they're putting out videos treating
- 3:19Speaker 1: this like a video game. It's not a video game
- 3:22Speaker 1: for the families of the fallen. And then just this
- 3:25Speaker 1: week we saw fund campaign fundraising materials being put out
- 3:29Speaker 1: emails where the President's committee, the President's political operation, was
- 3:35Speaker 1: raising money off of images of him at a dignified transfer.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Any politician who does that has no business leading American
- 3:43Speaker 1: troops in the war. If the President is willing to
- 3:45Speaker 1: raise campaign funds over the bodies of America's war dead,
- 3:50Speaker 1: he is unfit to be the commander in chief.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Let's talk about the status of the war. My panel
- 3:54Speaker 3: joins me. Now, Congressman, I mean, President Trump just said
- 3:59Speaker 3: a few hours ago on social media that Iran has
- 4:01Speaker 3: been beaten, So why are we still there?
- 4:04Speaker 5: Right?
- 4:04Speaker 6: Yeah, this is this has been the big mistake of
- 4:06Speaker 6: the administration. You could argue we never should have done
- 4:09Speaker 6: anything with the war, but I would say the biggest
- 4:11Speaker 6: mistake is just not preparing the American people for it.
- 4:15Speaker 6: And then when you realize this is going to take
- 4:16Speaker 6: a few days longer than you think. Right now, a
- 4:19Speaker 6: couple of weeks longer. Then it's just constantly Oh, that's
- 4:21Speaker 6: all right, we already won though, don't worry. Tomorrow it'll
- 4:23Speaker 6: be better. And I think the President, in his own way,
- 4:26Speaker 6: we've seen this before, is panicking because the market takes
- 4:29Speaker 6: a hit, because people are turning against him, and he
- 4:32Speaker 6: wants to live in this world where we're right on one,
- 4:35Speaker 6: you know, being successful in one day. I just think
- 4:37Speaker 6: he needs to level with people and say what the
- 4:40Speaker 6: truth is. Hey, we may be done tomorrow, this may
- 4:42Speaker 6: go on for a few more weeks. The straight of
- 4:44Speaker 6: horror moves is going to matter.
- 4:45Speaker 3: That's the leveling with the American people. Right about the
- 4:47Speaker 3: Iranian people, because in January, President Trump was saying help
- 4:50Speaker 3: is on the way, right, and now it seems pretty
- 4:53Speaker 3: clear that regime change is not necessarily in the cards.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Yeah, and the Iranian people are squeezed between the air
- 5:01Speaker 5: strikes and a regime that is extremely brutal. I mean,
- 5:05Speaker 5: people tell me that there are roadblocks everywhere in the
- 5:09Speaker 5: country and eighty eight year old was telling me that
- 5:12Speaker 5: he was made forced to get off his car to
- 5:16Speaker 5: open up his trunk at a gunpoint. So yeah, it's
- 5:21Speaker 5: not a good situation. Tehran was under intense bombing last night,
- 5:26Speaker 5: and so was the city of Esfahan, And people are
- 5:29Speaker 5: just waiting, waiting to see what's going to happen.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Where are we in the war, Well, I think the
- 5:33Speaker 2: president's face. The reason you're hearing some uncertain or mixed
- 5:37Speaker 2: signals is because they have two choices. The first choice
- 5:39Speaker 2: has already been made. We're going to end Iron's military
- 5:41Speaker 2: capabilities and in their ability to project terror and force abroad.
- 5:45Speaker 2: The second choice, whether you take their oil infrastructure out.
- 5:47Speaker 2: They're all export infrastructure. You don't take it out. If
- 5:50Speaker 2: it looks like there's going to be a regime that
- 5:53Speaker 2: rises in place in Iran that we could deal with
- 5:55Speaker 2: and it would be peaceful for the region, you'd leave
- 5:57Speaker 2: that in infrastructure intact. If that's going to happen. If
- 6:00Speaker 2: it's not going to happen, it's not going to happen,
- 6:01Speaker 2: then we have to take out their role life.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I'm just telling you it's not going to happen, Like
- 6:04Speaker 3: I mean, I don't sense at least at this point,
- 6:08Speaker 3: any notion that there's going to be some sort of
- 6:10Speaker 3: reasonable government.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Well, but then in that case, we have to leave
- 6:13Speaker 2: it decapitated militarily and unable to export oil to China
- 6:17Speaker 2: and Russia.
- 6:17Speaker 3: You've been out there talking to people in the field
- 6:20Speaker 3: about the midterms. Are is this coming up at all?
- 6:23Speaker 3: Are the American people engaged in the war.
- 6:25Speaker 7: It's really interesting. So I did spend a couple of
- 6:27Speaker 7: days with these are you know, organizers who are in
- 6:30Speaker 7: community and you would think it's housing, it's healthcare, and
- 6:33Speaker 7: those are concerns. The war is coming up. It's percolating
- 6:37Speaker 7: in a couple of ways. Young people who are angry
- 6:41Speaker 7: and similar to our own polling, angry that he broke
- 6:44Speaker 7: his promise, worried that they could.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Be focus promise about taking about taking.
- 6:48Speaker 7: The country to war. And I should mention that these
- 6:50Speaker 7: are like black and brown young people, some of whom
- 6:52Speaker 7: are in the military or come from families that have
- 6:55Speaker 7: military service, and parents are worried about their kids being
- 6:58Speaker 7: sent and they're not buying it. They know it's a war.
- 7:02Speaker 7: They're not buying you know. Politically, the president is trying
- 7:05Speaker 7: to and Republicans are trying to not say it's a war,
- 7:09Speaker 7: but they know it's a war and they know our
- 7:11Speaker 7: troops are in danger. And so it's just interesting that
- 7:14Speaker 7: in a time in communities where you would think these
- 7:18Speaker 7: cost issues would be top issues that actually people are.
- 7:22Speaker 7: I mean they even asked one of the senators this
- 7:25Speaker 7: week about the War Powers Resolution, which you know, really yes,
- 7:29Speaker 7: I mean they know it was like, oh, this housing
- 7:31Speaker 7: bill is great, but wait, we want to talk about
- 7:32Speaker 7: the War Powers Act, Which when did you ever hear
- 7:36Speaker 7: that from activists on the front line?
- 7:37Speaker 3: Red Do you disagree with Congressman Cansinger that there wasn't
- 7:40Speaker 3: enough preparation in terms of communications to the American people
- 7:43Speaker 3: about why this is happening, how long it's going to take,
- 7:46Speaker 3: et cetera.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I mean, I think I wish the President had talked
- 7:48Speaker 2: about it in the State of the Union address, but
- 7:50Speaker 2: he has spent seven months telling Americans that we have
- 7:53Speaker 2: to take out Iron's ability to project power abroad. And
- 7:56Speaker 2: for Frankly, this is seven presidents too late. He's the
- 7:59Speaker 2: first president who's the guts to take out the force
- 8:01Speaker 2: that has caused chaos and mayhem and killed Americans almost
- 8:05Speaker 2: every administration going all the way back to Jimmy Carter.
- 8:07Speaker 3: And we're seeing in a different thread environment right now.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I mean attacks on the synagogue at Old Dominion University.
- 8:16Speaker 3: I mean, there is I'm not blaming it on President Trump,
- 8:19Speaker 3: but there is now this cost at home.
- 8:21Speaker 6: Yeah there is. And you know this is I don't
- 8:23Speaker 6: think this is necessarily iron projecting its power. But you know,
- 8:28Speaker 6: anytime you have a big thing that is religiously could
- 8:32Speaker 6: be interpreted as religious, you have, you know, a chance
- 8:35Speaker 6: that somebody gets radicalized. And I think that's what you're seeing,
- 8:38Speaker 6: these low wolf radicalizations. And I'll also say what Brad
- 8:41Speaker 6: was saying makes sense, and the administration should actually hire
- 8:44Speaker 6: you to come out and lay that out, which is,
- 8:46Speaker 6: we'll take out your oil. If you're gonna be bad,
- 8:49Speaker 6: we'll leave it if you're gonna be good. Uh, that's
- 8:51Speaker 6: I think Americans need to hear that. You know, are
- 8:54Speaker 6: we gonna are we gonna occupy carg Island or not?
- 8:56Speaker 6: Are we gonna hold it hostage? While we'll kind of
- 8:58Speaker 6: figured out.
- 8:59Speaker 3: What happened in Iran if the US takes out.
- 9:02Speaker 5: The oil hark Islands specifically is the economic lifeline of
- 9:08Speaker 5: the Islamic Republic and of Iran. Just to make the threat,
- 9:13Speaker 5: it has a psychological impact on the Iranian regime. Let's
- 9:17Speaker 5: not forget that hark was under intense bombing during the
- 9:21Speaker 5: war with Iraq and ultimately was one of the key
- 9:25Speaker 5: reasons that Iran surrendered and agreed to assign a piece
- 9:30Speaker 5: deal with Iraq of Iran's oil is exported from that island,
- 9:37Speaker 5: and if it comes under attack, it will retaliate.
