- 0:01SPEAKER_04: What's up, everybody?
- 0:03SPEAKER_04: Welcome to another episode of the business of sports.
- 0:07SPEAKER_04: Learn our little show where we talk about the intersection of sports and money and all things sports.
- 0:12SPEAKER_04: Um, he's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:13SPEAKER_04: I'm Jean-Jacques Taylor.
- 0:15SPEAKER_04: Don't forget, subscribe, rate, review.
- 0:17SPEAKER_04: And for you, Mr.
- 0:18SPEAKER_04: Pink, I've got the number of the week.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Let's hear it.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Let's hear it.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Six million.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Six million.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Uh Lee Majors.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 0:29SPEAKER_04: That's a guess that shows your age.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: The six million dollar man.
- 0:34SPEAKER_04: Six million dollars is what Tom Signetti.
- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Kurt Signetti.
- 0:40SPEAKER_04: Kurt Signetti has made in addition to his salary this year.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: That's bonuses this year.
- 0:48SPEAKER_04: You want to know how bad Indiana was?
- 0:50SPEAKER_04: Let me tell you.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: He got$100,000 for winning the fifth Big Ten game.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, is that right?
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: He got another$150,000 for winning a sixth Big Ten game.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: That's how bad they are.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: We are going to give you$150,000 for winning six Big Ten games.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: He got a million for beating the buckass.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: He got$500,000 for making an appearance in the playoff.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: $600,000 for the quarterfinal appearance against Oregon.
- 1:28SPEAKER_04: $700,000 for the semifinal appearance.
- 1:37SPEAKER_04: And$2 million for winning it.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: So million dollars in bonuses.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: So three million for the championship game, essentially, a million for the appearance, and two million because he won.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: That's pretty amazing.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: It's it strikes me as one of these contracts that they wrote a few years ago, and they said, we'll never have to pay this out, so we'll put all these crazy incentives in.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: Oh, they absolutely did then.
- 2:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 2:04SPEAKER_04: Now here's the other thing that's in his deal.
- 2:07SPEAKER_04: Well, you know he signed a new deal like three months ago.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, he there's there's a clause in his contract that says, right, if he if he performs at a certain level, he has to be among the top three highest paid coaches.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: So he's about to get another raise.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: Now, funny thing is, he's 64.
- 2:24SPEAKER_04: He can't spend his money in his lifetime now.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: He spent all his time grinding.
- 2:29SPEAKER_04: Can you imagine this?
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: And I haven't looked it up.
- 2:33SPEAKER_04: But he was making five three years, two years ago at James Madison because it's a uh FBS school.
- 2:43SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was yeah.
- 2:44SPEAKER_04: It's it's division one, but yeah, it's division one.
- 2:47SPEAKER_04: I forgot they moved up.
- 2:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:48SPEAKER_04: He's making five hundred thousand to be the head coach.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: That's a good, that's a good salary trajectory.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's pretty amazing.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: The thing that I thought was really interesting is that the player who I thought was by far the most clutch player in that game for them was the receiver, the guy Carson Becker.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: He's the only holdover from Tom Allen's group, you know.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: You know, so he's a guy who I thought was, you know, sort of clutch was he in Mendoza and uh one of the defensive backs, I forget his name, but he and Mendoza specifically were sort of the embodiment to me of Kurt Signetti.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: And then it turns out Becker wasn't even one of Signetti's guys.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: No, he was uh he was mad because Ohio State didn't want him.
- 3:34SPEAKER_04: Uh that's why he flexed on us when he when he had the big catch.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: But he had a great, but he had a great championship game, too.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: You know, he was he was he's king of the back shoulder fate.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Uh he is, but he's he's uh I think with the Ohio State game and his performance in the playoffs, he went from uh this guy Becker went from essentially not playing in the first half of the year to I think being an NFL draft pick.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: Wouldn't surprise me at all.
- 3:59SPEAKER_04: So six million is the number for Kirk Signetti, and let's trans uh move into another number, which is our boy.
- 4:08SPEAKER_04: Now, let me be honest with you.
- 4:10SPEAKER_04: I got several text messages and several tweets uh talking very badly about CJ Stroud, the former buckeye quarterback with Houston Texans.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: Um I told several people I was strongly considering transferring his alum fan rights to Michigan.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Uh I didn't do that, but I thought about it after uh five turnovers in the first playoff game, five five fumbles, five fumbles in the first yeah, and then four picks in the first half of the second game.
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: And he was just god-awful.
- 4:48SPEAKER_04: Uh I told my son that he needed a reset, but you can't get one in the playoffs.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, uh, you know, it it kind of tells you that you wonder if that team had a just a an adequate quarterback, whether or not they'd be representing the AFC in the Super Bowl.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: Well, there's two points today.
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: Number one, yeah, because me and you could have been out there and played quarterback.
- 5:12SPEAKER_04: We just handed the ball off and not turned the ball over.
- 5:14SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: Um, number two, well, let me get to this first.
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: He said something very interesting after the game.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: Now, I don't know if it was BS or if it was true, but it was interesting to me.
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: Uh, and was, and it's not just because I had told somebody before he said it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 5:33SPEAKER_04: Um, he said something to, and I'm paraphrasing here, something to the effect of I have to understand I don't have to be Superman.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: My team is good, I don't have to do too much.
- 5:44SPEAKER_04: And I was thinking when I was talking to somebody, because they got such great defense, you really don't have to do anything but don't lose the game.
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: But whether he was at Ohio State and the offense was carrying the team, or when he was at Houston his first year and the offense was kind of carrying the team, he's used to carrying the team.
- 6:01SPEAKER_04: He's used to thinking I need to make a play, we need to do this, we need to do that.
- 6:05SPEAKER_04: And you really don't with this particular team.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's interesting.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: I know where you're going with this, yeah.
- 6:10SPEAKER_04: And he hadn't.
- 6:11SPEAKER_04: And so you're right.
- 6:13SPEAKER_04: You need to be a game manager, which is fine, and not be the reason why they lost.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: And so um it'll be interesting to see if he can take that approach next year because their defense should be just as good next year.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Well, he's in it, it'll be his fourth year next year.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: You know, normally uh his trajectory was such that after this season he was gonna get the big contract.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: He's not gonna get the big contract for sure, unless a phenomenal year four.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the contract was going to be something around five years at somewhere between 50 and 55 million dollars.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so say so say 250 mil.
- 6:50SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 6:50SPEAKER_04: That's where it was going to be in that ballpark.
- 6:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, uh, with the 250 being the bottom, because 50 is what they did.
- 6:56SPEAKER_04: Brock Purdy got 53, yeah, to a 53.
- 6:59SPEAKER_04: You know, that's what they get.
- 7:01SPEAKER_04: Now he's going to play under now.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: Let us let us tell you, we're not shedding tears for anybody who's going to make 26 million dollars next year.
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: That's what he's going to get.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: But 26, now I didn't I don't have an NBA from Duke, but 26 is just about 10% of 250.
- 7:22SPEAKER_04: So I can figure that out.
- 7:23SPEAKER_04: I can do that math.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Um, so the question is that's the Ohio State education kicking in right there.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: Is what happens after next year?
- 7:33SPEAKER_04: Um, I mean, because they'll sign him to the fifth-year extension, so they'll have him for two more years.
- 7:38SPEAKER_04: But, you know, what happens is, you know, well, actually, I don't know.
- 7:44SPEAKER_04: Next year is will determine whether he's worth the fifth-year extension.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: Um, if he plays well, but what if he plays well again in the regular season, struggles in the playoffs?
- 7:54SPEAKER_04: You know, do you decide that you need to franchise him?
- 7:57SPEAKER_04: But the franchise number is like 40-something million.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, look, look, he he's essentially played himself into a prove-it season next year.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: And I was uh and I was looking at their, I was kind of I was looking at their draft uh draft selections over the next couple of years to see if they they had any trades or sort of any additional picks.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: And sort of the only they have a second round pick from from the commanders, uh, either next year or the year after.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: But the quarterback class of 27 is a lot stronger than the quarterback class this year, you know.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: So this year's draft is much weaker quarterback class.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: The following year's, you know, draft uh class is a lot stronger.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: So you wonder if year four for him is a prove it year.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: And if he doesn't prove it, whether or not you could package him, you know, and and something else to get uh a draft pick to move up.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Because if that defense is still good in two years, and who knows, you know, you may have to start paying people.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Um they may be better off getting a decent rookie quarterback, to your point, who's more of a you know, who just won't make a mistake.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: You know, I mean, would you've rather had it's it's it's interesting.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Would you rather had in this game?
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: I was thinking about it, would you have rather had Bryce Young or CJ Stroud for this game?
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: Uh you'd probably rather have Bryce Young if you know what you know.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:20SPEAKER_04: Um I think you just raised an interesting point that I hadn't considered.
- 9:25SPEAKER_04: You can pay him, you can play him this year.
- 9:28SPEAKER_04: And if he's just met or you're not convinced, there's so many quarterbacks in that 27 draft that you can basically just reset again.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: That's what that's where I think they may be better off if the defense, you know, because they have a defensive head coach who looks like he's like the real, you know, is going to be an excellent coach and is going to be able to keep the defense going.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, you may be better off getting a slightly above average quarterback in the first round of 27, resetting, as you said, on and putting that quarterback on the rookie contract and starting over again.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: And you know, but also Stroud will Stroud will you know attract some uh trade interest for sure.
- 10:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:13SPEAKER_04: Um, I was gonna say the other thing is is in doing that, you can then because the most valuable thing of a rookie quarterback is the rookie contract.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: And so instead of paying him 35, 45, 50 million, if you don't really believe he's the guy, then fine.
- 10:29SPEAKER_04: You're a good quarterback.
- 10:30SPEAKER_04: You go make go do the Sam Darnold thing, go make 30 million quarterback and somewhere else.
- 10:35SPEAKER_04: We'll go get drafted rookie in the first round because you gotta take him in the first round.
- 10:41SPEAKER_04: Uh, we'll pay them, you know, five, six, seven million a pittance of what you would make, and then we'll use the money that we save to do what teams do.
- 10:51SPEAKER_04: We'll build the team around you.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 10:53SPEAKER_04: And make it even stronger.
- 10:54SPEAKER_04: We'll re-sign some guys, we may add a free agent or two.
- 10:57SPEAKER_04: That's not a bad theory.
- 10:59SPEAKER_04: You just hate to uh if you draft a dude with the second pick of the draft, you expect him to get a second contract, and we figured he would until the last two weeks.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's remarkable how how bad he he's looked.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: You know, and there was there was some talk when he was out for a few games in the middle of the season and and uh Davis Mills replaced him.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: The team's offense actually looked just as good.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: And there was some talk because that that's when they started going on that winning streak.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: And there was some talk at that time of do you disrupt it because Davis Mills seems to be doing pretty well and they're winning a bunch of games, or do you put you know CJ back?
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: And I think that if that were to happen again next year, Davis Mills would stay in for sure.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, the the trick about it is one of my favorite sayings, I've said it for 15, 20 years now, um, sport is fluid.
- 12:02SPEAKER_04: What's true right now may not be true an hour from now, a day from now, a month from now, a year from now.
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: And it happens.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: And I I tell people this all the time, because at one point, at seven o'clock, a year, almost a year ago, Luka Doncic was a member of the Dallas Mavericks.
- 12:20SPEAKER_04: And at 10 o'clock, he was no longer a member of the Dallas Mavericks.
- 12:24SPEAKER_04: And so two weeks ago, CJ Stroud's one of the top 14 quarterbacks in the league, maybe top 12.
- 12:31SPEAKER_04: Two weeks later, CJ Stroud is somewhere between 20 and 30 in terms of quarterbacks in the league.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I don't think he's uh maybe, maybe.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, who do you think?
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: But that's what I mean.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: Somebody would be like, okay, if you take a ball in Houston, he's somewhere between 25 and 32.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, because everything is fluid, right?
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: I agree with that.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Right now, today, you know, late January of 2026.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Who are the five just today?
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean that they're necessarily gonna be the best in you know next year.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: If you got to say these are the five best quarterbacks right now, who are they?
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: In the whole league.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Is Caleb in there now?
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: That's a good question.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, you got I think you gotta have Mahomes in there for sure.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: You know, I think you gotta do.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: And you gotta, I think you gotta, even though I'm not a huge fan, I think you gotta have Josh Josh Allen in there.
- 13:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think Josh Allen, Josh Allen's is uh he's still a great quarterback.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's the top, he's in the top five.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Those two for sure.
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, top five, I'd probably say uh top five right now.
- 13:38SPEAKER_04: Um I think Dak Prescott's in there.
- 13:41SPEAKER_04: Uh Matt Stafford's in there.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: I think Stafford is definitely I think and uh I mean Mahomes, Allen, and Stafford are for sure the top three right now, in my mind.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: At this particular moment.
- 13:51SPEAKER_04: And then I think uh I think Dak's in there, and then if we're talking about just right now, you know, Drake may be in there.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that's I think that's fair.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: I think you know, you know, Lamar Jackson, um he had a down year for him, you know, and that's why we say at this moment, because Joe Burrow in a moment would to me would be up there.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:14SPEAKER_04: You know, I'm still not sold on Justin Herbert, he's a lot of chatter and not a lot of production.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Well, he hasn't done anything in the postseason, yeah.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:24SPEAKER_04: And you know, the thing about it is, and I think this is true, and I I uh loosely debate people on this all the time until I get mad and just say this conversation conversation is beneath me.
- 14:36SPEAKER_04: Which is um we're too we're too we are a uh what is it?
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: We got too much recency bias.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: 100%, yeah.
- 14:46SPEAKER_04: As a as a as a sports fandom.
- 14:48SPEAKER_04: And everybody's great.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: And no, they're really not great.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: They're good, they're really good.
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: There's only a few great players.
- 14:56SPEAKER_04: And so what we like to do is we like to say, hey, look at that year CJ Stroud had, he's one of the best ever.
- 15:02SPEAKER_04: Can we can we let people put two or three or four seasons together before we say they're this or they're that, or you know, some receiver comes in and has, you know, old OBJ, Odell Beckham Jr.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: comes in.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: Odell Beckham Jr.
- 15:17SPEAKER_04: had three amazing years.
- 15:21SPEAKER_04: He had two good years, and the other four years were trash, yeah, for whatever reason.
- 15:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but two years in his career, oh my god, he's oh, he's up there with Jerry Wright.
- 15:32SPEAKER_04: No, he's not.
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, there's something to be said for longevity, and too many times as a sports fandom, we don't give people time to reach longevity before we anoint them this or anoint them that.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: And you know, that's why I said, even if we're talking about teams, so say we're talking about Indiana, okay, and we you and I have discussed it.
- 15:56SPEAKER_04: Okay, Indiana, undefeated, a wonderful season.
- 15:59SPEAKER_04: What else can you say?
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: It's fantastic.
- 16:02SPEAKER_04: But now comes the challenge of you have to deal with expectations for the first time ever.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Right, ever.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Ever.
- 16:09SPEAKER_04: Ever.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:09SPEAKER_04: You also had, which means now everybody gets ready to play you and give you their best game.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Well, and and I think, and I think you saw that with Ohio State gets that best game.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm not trying to be an Ohio State homer, but it's okay.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: It was it was Indiana playing Ohio State was the biggest game in 50 years for Indiana.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Miami playing Ohio State was the biggest game in about 25 years for Miami.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: You know, for Ohio State, it was another game against Indiana, and it was another game against Miami, you know, and and that's a it's a totally, you know, that's it's how Alabama used to have uh that's why that's why Alabama, Alabama would get upset usually once a year because of ex for exactly that reason.
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: You know, the other thing is for, and when I say teams, it's not just that.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: You also have to deal with now people will come after your coordinators, and now you have to, you know, the man's top remains, but all your infrastructure you got to protect, and you're going to lose some because you've had success.
- 17:11SPEAKER_04: And your ability to survive that is what makes your program great.
- 17:15SPEAKER_04: And so it's about longevity, whether you're talking about individuals, whether you're talking about teams.
- 17:20SPEAKER_04: You can have a great season, right?
- 17:22SPEAKER_04: Uh, but you're not a great program until you have multiple great seasons.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: And there's there's also a very compelling argument that Mendoza was just a great college quarterback, and that's the reason that they won a lot of their games.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Now, I understand that the team was pretty strong across the board, but I think without Mendoza, they're probably a two to three loss team.
- 17:48SPEAKER_04: It could be.
- 17:49SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't, I wouldn't necessarily argue with that.
- 17:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, uh, his pro thing will be uh not I've watched him a lot over the last three games, uh his his pro potential to me, he's got a certain skill set, but how much of his toughness, intelligence, and uh intangibles can take him to another level.
- 18:14SPEAKER_04: Like he'll be a he may be a solid NFL quarterback, but if those those things translate to the NFL the way they did to college, then he could be one of the top quarterbacks.
- 18:26SPEAKER_04: Because and I say it from the because you got some guys, because they're smart, because they're winners, they can they just make plays at winning time, and they can that can overcome some of their you know Tom Brady's the greatest example of that.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: Tom Brady, Brady's not a great athlete, ain't got a great arm, but everything else was off the charts, and so that allowed him to beat Tom Brady.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I think he's a top 15 count, a top 15 quarterback of the NFL at best.
- 18:59SPEAKER_04: Uh somebody told me they said he's he his comp to them was Jared Goff.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: That's okay.
- 19:05SPEAKER_04: If Jared Goff is your guy, I'm good with that.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I I think his comp is Yeah, yeah, I think he's I think he's he's a little bit better athlete than Jared Goff, but I think his he he reminds me, and I hate to say this, he reminds me of Kirk Cousins a lot, you know?
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Uh but so that to me is his comp.
- 19:28SPEAKER_04: You shouldn't hate to say that, but if you if you told somebody you have Kirk Cousins' career, that's fine.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: So I that's what I'm saying.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: He's probably a top, probably gonna be in the top half.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: But I don't think he's gonna be anything beyond that.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: Um I just don't.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: You know what, you know what's interesting is looking at the quarterbacks in the playoffs.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Uh I have to say that I was not uh a big fan of not a big fan, I I wasn't really sold on either Bo Nicks or Brock Purdy.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: And I they they changed my opinion in the playoffs.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Both of them did.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: Um Bo Nicks is kind of what I'm talking about.
- 20:09SPEAKER_04: Like none of his stuff is great, but clearly he's got something in him, intangible wise, that at winning time he can make plays.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Well, he's also in the other thing that Bo Nix has that Mendoza won't have, I don't think, is Bo Nex is in an incredibly good situation.
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: Yes, with Sean Payton.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, and and Brady was in an incredibly good situation.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: The question is, who are the Raiders gonna hire as a coach?
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: You know, and will that will that coach actually will Mendoza be in a good position there?
- 20:44SPEAKER_04: That will play the biggest role.
- 20:46SPEAKER_04: Huge, huge role in his success.
- 20:48SPEAKER_04: Bottom line for me, CJ Stroud lost so much money.
- 20:52SPEAKER_04: I can't count that.
- 20:54SPEAKER_04: But he's got a chance to win it back.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, bottom line for me, year four for CJ Stroud, which is this season, the 2026 season, is the prove it season for him.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: And if he doesn't prove it, he's gonna get traded.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: And the Texans are gonna draft a quarterback in 2027 and start the rookie clock all over again.
- 21:15SPEAKER_04: Insane, man.
- 21:16SPEAKER_04: Insane.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: That's crazy.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: I can't believe, I can't believe we're saying that.
- 21:19SPEAKER_04: Sports is fluid, baby.
- 21:21SPEAKER_04: I've just said it for years.
- 21:23SPEAKER_04: Uh as we move on to another topic, it's uh it's becoming this is kind of like once a week, dog.
- 21:29SPEAKER_04: Uh this week or last week, um Duke quarterback Darien Mensah tried to transfer tried to enter the portal after he signed a contract to stay at Duke uh for this season.
- 21:44SPEAKER_04: Apparently, reportedly, he was headed to he wants to go to Miami.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's that's the rumor.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:50SPEAKER_04: Um, but Duke has sued him.
- 21:52SPEAKER_04: Uh they received temporary restraining orders, which prove prevents him from uh enrolling in school or playing football.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: For somebody other than Duke until this gets worked out.
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: And I'm not surprised, man.
- 22:07SPEAKER_04: I mean, bottom line is you can't be signing contracts.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: And then I mean, you can't like, I mean, this is kind of basic, man.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: You can't sign your name on some on a real document to do business and then be like, no, I'm good.
- 22:20SPEAKER_04: I changed my mind.
- 22:21SPEAKER_04: That's why we signed paperwork.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: It is a further example of the sort of the professionalization of college sports.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: This is a, you know, I looked at the contract.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is this is essentially, you know, a talent slash employment contract that he signed.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: And whoever gave him advice on this, or you know, how this how this contract came about and that he he signed this contract.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Um it's, you know, college athletes now need are going to need formal representation.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Um, there's a reason there's a players union, there's a reason there's all the safeguards for players who sign contracts in the NFL.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: And it hasn't, that that just hasn't developed yet for college football.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: It's, you know, it's it's still, to use your favorite term, it's still very fluid, everything that's happening in college football.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: And this is just another example of it.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: And you see this, in you know, I don't know, you know, I don't think that's the right thing to do, obviously, to sign a contract and then try to back out of it, or is what it appears to have happened, although you know, you never know.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: But uh it's it's these are this is gonna happen all the time.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: No question.
- 23:33SPEAKER_04: Um I think um the agents, then just like in the NFL, to represent an NFL player, you have to pass some test and you have to be registered as an NFL agent.
- 23:49SPEAKER_04: And all the test does is says, I know these specifics, I have this set of standards, like any other test, whether it be a lawyer or your Series 7 if you're working with money and all those things.
- 23:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it just provide a standard level of competence from an intellectual standpoint, regardless of whether you're good at your job or not.
- 24:08SPEAKER_04: Dude, until they do that for college football, it's gonna be a mess because to me, all these too many representatives, one, they're just seeing dollar signs, which means they see the player only as a dollar sign.
- 24:24SPEAKER_04: And I know this because um I've talked to several, several coaches, you know, in terms of high school coaches who are dealing with their players who are not in college or on who are dealing with them at the high school level.
- 24:37SPEAKER_04: And at the NFL level, as an agent, you can command a percentage no more than 3% of a total contract.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: It's it's capped in the NFL, right?
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: What they can charge.
- 24:46SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: That's the best way to say it.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:48SPEAKER_04: Ain't no cap in college football.
- 24:49SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 24:50SPEAKER_04: And check this out.
- 24:52SPEAKER_04: If you're a player who comes from a family that's never dealt with a situation like this, of course.
- 25:03SPEAKER_04: We really care about you as a person.
- 25:05SPEAKER_04: We're gonna cap our percentage uh for this deal at 15%.
- 25:10SPEAKER_04: Uh a lot of people out there charging 2022.
- 25:12SPEAKER_04: We're gonna keep ours at 15.
- 25:14SPEAKER_04: You go, what a nice man that Mr.
- 25:16SPEAKER_04: Taylor is.
- 25:18SPEAKER_04: You sign on the dotted line.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: Um, and it's ridiculous.
- 25:22SPEAKER_04: Not just that, the contracts that they're allowing their clients to sign are crazy.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: They're crazy.
- 25:29SPEAKER_04: I told you about the quarterback in at Washington two weeks ago or three weeks ago.
- 25:34SPEAKER_04: His deal said there was no cap on the amount of damages Washington could seek.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, so it's it's it's again, you gotta, you know, you've got vulnerable 18, 19, and 20-year-olds.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Vulnerable in the sense that they've never done this before.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: This might be their equivalent of their first job.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: You know, they may come from a background where they don't even know what the, as you point out, what they're supposed to do.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: There's gotta be some sort of safeguards.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: It's it's the you know, the ineptitude of the NCAA in general, the the greed of the SEC and the Big Ten at this point.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: And listen, I'm all for players should make whatever they can, and I'm all for you know, player empowerment.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's the number one thing, particularly for college, even though it's it's not even college anymore.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, you you look at like Carson Beck, the story came out that he hasn't taken a class in two years, you know, and then the average age on the Indiana team was 23 and all that.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: But putting that aside, if you think of it as, you know, they're they're still young kids, you know, 18 to 24, you know, mostly, um, they need some representation.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: In fact, they shouldn't even be allowed to sign a contract unless they have representation.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: It's like buying a house in it's like buying a house in many states.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: You're not allowed to buy a house in a state, certain states, unless you have an attorney uh looking at the contract for you.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: You you're not even allowed to buy the house.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: So something like that has to happen, but it has to be, I think, a broader uh discussion about what happens in college sports in general.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: Do you get a commissioner?
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: Do you know do you change the NCAA?
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Do you you know create a new governing body?
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: You need something.
- 27:20SPEAKER_04: You need some type of governing body.
- 27:23SPEAKER_04: The problem is everybody, there's nobody you trust because everybody's only interested in their own self-interest.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 27:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, so there's like, I'm not uh, you know, even if you even if you said, hey, what about a guy like Nick Saban?
- 27:39SPEAKER_04: He loves college football.
- 27:41SPEAKER_04: Uh Nick Saban's a great coach.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: Nick Saban is all about Nick Saban.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: Of course.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: And what's what fits him best, what suits him best.
- 27:49SPEAKER_04: He's got some good ideas, but at the end of the day, he's all about him.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Um, or you know, maybe Alabama, maybe that's he's Nick, Nick Saban stopped coaching because he couldn't deal with with the wild wild list.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: He couldn't deal with it.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's you can't even get the Big Ten in the SEC to agree on the potential changes in the college football playoff because there's so much self-interest there.
- 28:16SPEAKER_04: It's really like um now Jeremy gets gets a feeling in his stomach every time I talk about something like this.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: It's really like politics.
- 28:26SPEAKER_04: And what I mean is a Republican could come up with the greatest idea in the world to save cancer, and the Democrats would take a big poop on it and say it's dumb.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: A Democrat could come up with the greatest idea ever to solve cancer, cure cancer.
- 28:46SPEAKER_04: The Republicans would poo-poo it and take a big dump on it because they don't really care about what's best, they just care about their own self-interest.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: They care about their team matters more than the actual issue.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: SEC and the Big Ten are the same, the exact same.
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: They're not going to be able to do that.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: That's I totally agree.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: They only care about their conference.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: What's best for us?
- 29:09SPEAKER_04: Screw everybody else.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: It's why, you know, it's why if you look at Major League Base, you know, the the not to really bore everybody, but the the emergence of a commissioner in Major League Baseball was done specifically to be an independent voice, to you know, to to stop the the self-interest and to you know to to to make the league better, to make the league fairer.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Uh, and I I think that college football is gonna ultimately is gonna have to figure out how to get them.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: The other thing, too, is that the question is whether or not there's gonna be equivalent, there's gonna be an equivalent of a players' union in college football, you know, and that's I think very I think that's another important uh hurdle or another important challenge that that the sport's gonna have.
- 29:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, because again, somebody's got to organize a union.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: And it the question really is right, but but but again, that's another safeguard against bad practices or unin even even if they're unintended bad practices, but bad practices that can that can harm the that can harm the athletes.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: So I think that what what what's great about college football right now is that it's actually really interesting now.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: It was it was really you could have penciled in you know five or six teams that were gonna be you know in the in the national uh you know national championship game, you know, for the you know in the last 20 years, you could have said it's basically gonna be Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, maybe uh some some emerging SEC team for a year, and then maybe Ohio State.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: And that's really about it.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: You know, there's no it's really nobody, or maybe Notre Dame, but nobody else really uh challenged.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: But just in the last few years, that's wide open now, brother.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's great.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: So college football is great, you know.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: It's it's far more interesting now.
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: What's funny is everybody thought, I mean, a vast majority of people thought, oh, you pay players.
- 31:10SPEAKER_04: They never really figured out that no paying players doesn't mean Ohio State and Alabama will get the best players.
- 31:18SPEAKER_04: Maybe it does, but it means guys ain't waiting to play.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: And so the reality of it is a guy used to come to Ohio State or Alabama and sit for two or three years and wait for his turn to play.
- 31:32SPEAKER_04: Now, Ohio State pays Jeremy$700,000 just to come on campus and be part of the team.
- 31:39SPEAKER_04: He stays for a year.
- 31:40SPEAKER_04: I haven't played because I'm behind two All-Americans, and they still got a year left.
- 31:45SPEAKER_04: So I'm gonna I took your 700, I just rode the bench all year.
- 31:48SPEAKER_04: Now I'm gonna go play at Purdue and make a million and play.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: Well, but also the the the sort of the inverse of that is a lot of players who were kind of low D1 who thought they should be at a higher level, they're playing at you know, University of North Texas or James Madison, and they've proven themselves over a couple of years playing, they're actually becoming just as you know, they're actually becoming more valuable than that five.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: They're the new college recruits.
- 32:18SPEAKER_04: They have yeah, yeah, and now high school kids have got to figure out what their move is.
- 32:23SPEAKER_04: Because if you're not a five-star or a big time four-star, uh you probably you out of luck, bro.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you got to go somewhere where you can play so you can then get the big NIL money.
- 32:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so the game has changed, man.
- 32:40SPEAKER_04: And whenever there's a big change like this, it's who adapts first and best.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: 100% right.
- 32:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, it's social Darwinism and it's finest.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: And um, if you if you if you're not that moth that blends in, baby, you're in trouble.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: And so uh yeah, yeah, but I'm I'm listening I'm I'm impressed.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, social Darwinism, uh, you're talking politics, it's pretty pretty impressive.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: Uh but but but I think but but I do think that it is um you know it's interesting that Sabin basically said, I'm not dealing with this.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: And Signetti to me is the equivalent of the two-star recruit who started playing really well and said, All right, now I got my chance.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: And Signetti was the one who really adapted this.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: And basically, you know, from what I can tell, you know, from what I see from his coaching, Signetti basically said, I need a his number one thing is he needs a quarterback, you know, and every year he's getting he's getting another quarterback.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: Um, and he's just making sure his team is coached so they don't make mistakes.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: And in college football, that'll that'll get you wins.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: That'll that'll get you exactly, that'll get you pretty far, you know.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: And and a lot of like, you know, Ohio State has Ohio State and Texas, and maybe Penn State, I think, probably although watching Miami, maybe Miami, but those three or four schools probably had the most pure talent of any teams in the country this year.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Um that didn't matter as much.
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: No, man.
- 34:13SPEAKER_04: It's kind of moving toward the uh college base college basketball model, where everybody used to want these big-time freshman recruits to come in, and then somebody like Butler or Gonzaga would have a bunch of 20, 40-year-olds who knew how to play.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 34:28SPEAKER_04: And they would just they would beat your phenoms just because they were they had a mental advantage on you.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: Well, not only that, or they're they're at at a program for two or three years and they know how to play together as a team, as opposed to you know five, five 19-year-olds who are all great, who were thrown together as a team.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: And no, nobody on that team is used to not being the best player.
- 34:48SPEAKER_04: You know, that's the problem we have with the Olympic team.
- 34:51SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: No, that's exactly right.
- 34:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, bottom line for me, man, they have got to regulate the agents in college football, or we're going to continue to have stories like Mensa each and every week because they're completely and totally out of control.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: Bottom line for me, college football needs a governing body that has to be an independent governing body.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: And the players need some form of representation or union or something uh that's the equivalent uh as well, in order to make the uh what I think college football is on a trajectory that's so incredibly good.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: Um, this is the one thing that can derail it, these kind of issues.
- 35:37SPEAKER_04: Now it's time for our weekly dose of Ohio State conversation.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 35:41SPEAKER_04: Hey man, there was a whole lot of panic to me about oh, matter of fact, I I received a couple calls from Columbus.
- 35:49SPEAKER_04: Hey, why we got so many people in the portal?
- 35:51SPEAKER_04: There's like 25 players in the portal.
- 35:54SPEAKER_04: And I told them what we just got through discussing.
- 35:56SPEAKER_04: Well, I'm gonna sit on the bench in Ohio State where I can go make money and start somewhere else.
- 36:00SPEAKER_04: It makes no sense to me.
- 36:02SPEAKER_04: So I went through the list because I had a few moments last week of all the players in the portal who left.
- 36:11SPEAKER_04: And um the one who concerned me the most was really I can't remember his name.
- 36:19SPEAKER_04: He was number, but I know him, but I can't remember his name.
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: I had an old man moment.
- 36:23SPEAKER_04: He was number five cornerback, and his claim to fame was he didn't start, but he was a demon on special teams, and he was blowing dudes up.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, he was he was a big-time recruit, too.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: I can't think of his name either, but he was a big time recruit.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: Scott's his last name.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: He's a big time recruit.
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: And he's going to Oregon, so that kind of sucks.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: Um, and then we lost uh, I forget their names because I'm a fan, but I'm not like stepping in the depth chart every night.
- 36:51SPEAKER_04: We lost two receivers who were five-star receivers.
- 36:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but I don't think they both went to Notre Dame, yeah, which is good for Notre Dame.
- 36:58SPEAKER_04: But my point is you didn't really lose anybody that was a significant contributor to that team.
- 37:06SPEAKER_04: You lost people who went to Penn State.
- 37:08SPEAKER_04: And you're in today's college football, if they're not starting, they're going to leave.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: As you know, you remember Gary Templeton.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: Wow, we're going way back to that.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: This is very he had a he had a great line.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: Um, when he would make, you know, when he was named to an all-star team one year, and he, you know, as we asked if he's going, he wasn't a starter, but he was named to the team, and he said, If I ain't starting, I ain't departing, right?
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of like that here.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: If I ain't starting, I'm definitely departing, you know.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, but the the loss that I think is going to be big for Ohio State, yes, is you know, Lincoln Keenholes, their backup quarterback, he went to Louisville.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: Um I he, if you recall, he was neck and neck with Saiyan all off season, and they gave the starting job to Saiyan, but he didn't really break away as the you know the front runner for that job.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, Keene Holes was right there.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: I think he's I think he's going to have a huge season at Louisville next year.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 38:24SPEAKER_04: Um, I didn't view him as a big loss because he wasn't going to beat Saiyan out this year.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: He's not, he's not, he's not going to beat Saiyan out, but if you need a backup quarterback, which they might, um, they do have St.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: Clair, who's a who's who appears to be an excellent player, but you know, you never know.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: He's a five.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: You never know.
- 38:43SPEAKER_04: But yeah, I'm from the old school of and it's not, I'm not in there by myself.
- 38:51SPEAKER_04: If your backup is playing, it be what it be.
- 38:57SPEAKER_04: Uh in today's world, for the very reasons we just said, because there was a time he never would have left.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:05SPEAKER_04: And now I expected him to leave.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: No, I expected him to leave too.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying, I think it's going to be a bigger loss than people might anticipate.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: There is.
- 39:14SPEAKER_04: What they should do is go out.
- 39:17SPEAKER_04: I guess the portal's closed now.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: I can't even keep up with the portal rules.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it is closed now.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: As you try to go out and get you a even though you got St.
- 39:24SPEAKER_04: Clair and he's an air apparent, you try to get you a backup who's played somewhere so that if disaster happens, you're not throwing a guy who's never played into the mix, which is kind of your problem.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: Well, look at look at Dylan Riola going to Oregon.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: And you know, he's he's gonna sit for a year there, like uh I don't think that was such a bad move when I did some more research on it.
- 39:48SPEAKER_04: And here's why.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: Tell me what you think.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: Only because he broke his fibula in November, and now instead of rushing back to play and do all the stuff get ready for a season, he can truly, truly heal and be straight um for when it's his turn to play.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: I I think it's I yeah, I agree with that.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: I think it's bigger than that.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: I think he was looking around and he's going, okay, Dan Lanning turned Dylan Gabriel into a great quarterback.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: I'm having a black Didn't Dave.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: Dan Lanning turned Dante Moore into uh who well, although Dante Moore had a uh you know CJ Stroud moment in in you know the semifinal, but but turned turned Dante Moore into who a really good quarterback.
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: I think Dylan Royola is looking up and going, I should be that level of a quarterback.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: Uh, I need a coach, I need a program where I know for sure that I can develop.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: So he can heal and simultaneously develop, and then a year what more will definitely go pro following this year.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: Um I think he could have just made himself a lot of money by transferring to Oregon because I think he'll be a breakout player once he's at Oregon in a year from now.
- 41:09SPEAKER_04: Nah, I'm I'm down with that.
- 41:11SPEAKER_04: You know, the other thing is it's the flip side of the NIL.
- 41:15SPEAKER_04: You don't have to run to the NFL and get money.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: That's true, too.
- 41:18SPEAKER_04: You have money right here.
- 41:20SPEAKER_04: So whatever they're paying him, maybe they said, hey, you're gonna be the backup, not really expecting you to play this year.
- 41:25SPEAKER_04: So this year we'll pay you two million.
- 41:28SPEAKER_04: Next year, when you're the starter, whatever the going rate is, we'll pay you four million.
- 41:33SPEAKER_04: And you know, and that's how they're doing it now.
- 41:36SPEAKER_04: And so, no, I thought um a lot of people uh criticize Dante Moore's decision, and we'll talk more about this next week.
- 41:45SPEAKER_04: Dante Moore's decision to stay in school.
- 41:47SPEAKER_04: You know, it's talk a lot a bit about hey, you need to start your clock on the NFL, get to the second contract, blah, blah, blah.
- 41:54SPEAKER_04: The most important point is can you play?
- 41:58SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 41:58SPEAKER_04: Don't go to the league until you can play.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 42:02SPEAKER_04: At the best at the highest level.
- 42:04SPEAKER_04: Because who cares about rushing into the league, not getting your fifth-year deal, and then starting in that backup quarterback journey where you're just in fields and you're on seven teams in eight years.
- 42:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: But but but I but I also believe that in the quarterback class of 27, there's gonna be probably five or six guys who are gonna be drafted in the first round.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's hard to project, but I think that's what it appears to be.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: You could get into a really good situation in 27, and situation in 26 is you're gonna go to the Raiders or the Jets.
- 42:41SPEAKER_04: Two of the worst, not just bad years, but bad front time.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: And so I think there's I think that had to enter into a decision-making process.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Oh, it just had to.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: Now, as far as Ohio State goes, what is the most important thing that you I know I have an answer to this.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: What is the most important thing that Ohio State needs to do uh ahead of next season?
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: I don't know what I think they got to get the right offensive coordinator.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, no, no, you're right.
- 43:11SPEAKER_04: That's a good thing.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: And and I think that you've got to, you know, I was watching the championship game, and you know, I was watching Signetti, and I thought he was kind of a little bit wobbly, you know, in certain parts of the game in terms of decision making.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: But ultimately, when he Indiana was up 17-14, and he was kind of wobbly about his decision.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Should he kick a field goal, should he not?
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: Should he go up two scores or should he just go up six?
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: And it looked like he was going to kick a field goal, then he called a timeout, and then he decided to go for it.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: And it turned out to be the you know Mendoza run, and which is you know kind of an iconic run, not quite the Jack Sawyer scoop and score, but you know, it was close.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: And um I but I think what that was telling because I think that's the Kind of decision making and coaching that's needed now to win in college football.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: You have to be much more aggressive than you than you've ever been, particularly these big programs, because these big programs are used to just winning and just sort of overwhelming other teams.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: That's not happening anymore.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: So you have to be you have to find an offensive coordinator.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: You have to create at least create some offensive decision making where that is far more aggressive than what Ohio State's current play calling is.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: And I think that's critical to find that in an NOC for Ohio State uh for 26.
- 44:34SPEAKER_04: I would agree with that.
- 44:35SPEAKER_04: That and um they've got to get their passing game is always gonna be dynamic.
- 44:41SPEAKER_04: Uh I thought their running game was below was subpar this year, and I thought their offensive line was subpar.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: Well, the offensive line was exposed in the last uh against Miami.
- 44:50SPEAKER_04: Because there was a lot of, you know, during the course of the season, one reason they struggled in the red zone is they couldn't run it in the red zone.
- 44:57SPEAKER_04: And the thing about the championship season and this season, and I I know this is there's just a significant difference between Henderson and Jeff Jenkins and Bo Jackson.
- 45:10SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 45:10SPEAKER_04: Bo Jackson's a good running back.
- 45:13SPEAKER_04: The mother dudes were special.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:15SPEAKER_04: And there's there's just a difference.
- 45:17SPEAKER_04: And when you don't have a special guy back there, and we've had a lot of special guys over the years, so I know what they look like when you see them.
- 45:24SPEAKER_04: It just changed the whole thing, man, because it's just different.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: But but the other the other thing that was missing from their running game, and you you've you talked about this uh and you know a couple of shows ago, is uh Will Howard could run.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: Julian Sain can't.
- 45:40SPEAKER_04: No, he can't run at all.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean Will Howard could run, and that was a that was a huge threat.
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: You know, and Will Howard was also a big dude who could get a first down.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: Julian Sain can't do that.
- 45:51SPEAKER_04: No, that's why he got stopped at the goal on his knee touch, which is why I still haven't figured out why they didn't put uh Lincoln Keenholes in, yeah.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:59SPEAKER_04: I mean that's one of the that's one of the great mysteries to me.
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I was he was built for those moments.
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: Right, and you can even just put him in and it doesn't matter.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: You know, they know it's you they know he's uh very likely to get the ball.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: He's still gonna, he's still gonna get that, you know, eight inches or whatever.
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: He's a he's a big dude, and and they yeah, but but I think but I do think that Ohio State has to, you know, really find an OC that is you know more innovative, uh, you know, that's a bolder kind of play caller um than they've had in the past.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: And I think part of the issue with Ohio State this year was that they you always felt like they were holding back during the entire season.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: You never felt like they were really yeah, and and I and I think and I think maybe that was all they had, you know.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: They weren't actually holding back.
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: They weren't holding it back.
- 46:53SPEAKER_03: This is what you're right.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: And and so if you if you feel as a viewer and a fan that they're holding back, the reality might have been that's all they got.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: So so I think that it's critical that they find the right uh uh offensive coordinator next year because they also have uh the the great receiver coming in that that's gonna be you know paired with Jeremiah Smith.
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: So they could have these, they could have two tremendous threats on the outside.
- 47:19SPEAKER_04: They did this year, but you gotta have an offensive line, you gotta have a running game to be.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I agree.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think the offensive line was was probably in hindsight was was just you know average.
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: It was average, um, but but that actually actually shows you how good the rest of the team was.
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: You know, that they had an average offensive line and they still made it as far as they did.
- 47:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I would agree with that.
- 47:41SPEAKER_04: Hey, we appreciate you guys hanging with us.
- 47:43SPEAKER_04: Don't forget to subscribe, rate, review.
- 47:47SPEAKER_04: Five stars only.
- 47:48SPEAKER_04: Don't bring any of that other weak stuff in here.
- 47:50SPEAKER_04: Uh until we chat again for uh Jeremy Pete, John Jack Taylor.
- 47:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, chill out.
- 47:54SPEAKER_04: Keep your eye on your money and your teams.
- 47:57SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 47:57SPEAKER_00: Thanks, everybody.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: We'll see you next week.
