- Elwyn: It is offensive to people who are connected to that and any of the other genocides that have happened throughout the world and any of the genocides that are happening now that nobody seems to give a shit about, like in Sudan and Yemen. It is offensive. To dilute the word and then say, well, we're only doing it, we're using the word early to make sure that it an actual genocide doesn't happen. It's a preemptive use of the word, right? No, no, no, no. Derek: What's up y'all? Welcome back to the Before You Speak podcast. I'm your host, Derek Peterson, and I'm just processing the fire hose of my news feed with this guy that's somewhere around here. Elwyn: I'm in I'm in front of what is not a sex swing. Derek: I mean I I almost brought it up last week. I was Elwyn: Ha ha. Derek: like like, you know what, I'm just not gonna touch that one. Elwyn: I see it every time. I'm like, should probably address that at some point. Derek: Nah, you should have just left them in the dark. Anybody that's watching, they think you Elwyn: Yeah. Derek: and Lisa have a very robust sex life. You know, you guys are good. Out in the open, right in the middle of Elwyn: Out in the out in the open, right, up here in the bonus room. Derek: your house. I mean you did just send one kid to college. That's the hope, right? Is that once they're all gone you can just, you know, walk around naked all day. So that's that's where I'm at. Elwyn: Yep. But anyway, I I am Elwyn. And the fire hose my news feed is dry because it comes exclusively from the White House media pool. So it's it's Derek: yeah. Elwyn: been banned. I'm in a media free environment and you know, it is the last two days have been the best ever. my god, no media. I feel great. Derek: Yeah, this is kind of hilarious. So, like, you know, Trump came out this week and basically banned MS Now, CNN, and one other politico. Elwyn: political. Derek: Yeah. And the the rumors are it's because Natalie harp had shown him a highlight reel of somebody on MSNBC basically just, you know, all basically shit like all of the calling out all of his bullshit. so he lost it, called everybody fake news, kicked them out because he didn't like it. and then after the fact, when he realized that that was essentially against the First Amendment, he then started saying it's because of national security. And a judge was like, the national the national security argument came after the fact, and you're going to need to prove that there is a national security risk to uphold any of this, so which most people are saying is not gonna happen. But I I believe they have fourteen days, but the they're allowed in in the meantime. Does that sound right? Elwyn: Yeah, he he initially did not allow them this morning and then he allowed them. So they are allowed. They're back in the White House now. you know, the I I think buried in your statement is some some assumption that he does understand that he violated the First Amendment. I don't believe he understands that for a for a second. but there you know, there is sort of some unintentional hilarity to shed some light, some some humor, some levity on what's actually a pretty serious thing. w the day after he gave there was some ribbon cutting that he he he was at, you know, some ceremonial thing. And he's up there giving giving a talk, but nobody can understand, nobody can hear him because the mics weren't there because it was on the White House grounds and all the press had left. So he's giving a speech that all you can hear is like the helicopter, Marine Force One in the background. You know, and then he got all mad at Caitlin Collins from CNN because she was at the UN and he was like, I thought I kicked you out of here. And she's No, man, I'm here because the UN allows me here. Derek: Yeah. Elwyn: but yeah, the idea that kind of my first thought was like, Wow, does he really want to do that? Because he uses the media. Like he needs the media. He relies on them to broadcast every noise that comes out of his mouth. why would he wanna kick them out? But Yeah, I mean all all that aside, it's an obvious violation of the First Amendment. The judge that's hearing it is a Trump appointed judge who also ruled when in in his first term Trump took Jim Acosta's press pass. And the same Derek: That's right. Elwyn: judge you know, ruled against Trump in that case. and it was pretty fast yesterday. The the court proceeding was like an hour. Derek: Yeah, it you know what's interesting in all of this is that actually one of the best things the press could do if they all actually united would be to actually just leave and stop reporting on every word he says. Because that's I mean, the the dude, I to be honest, it's the only reason he's still alive. If he if he was not getting the attention that he got, which I think fuels him, I genuinely think that he would probably not be he would give up because he's like, Yeah, I don't He that dude thrives on attention. He needs to be the center of attention all the time. And not just like in the US. He needs to be the center of the world's attention, which is bananas. But yeah, I it's it's not shocking what he did, but it's also dumb as shit. And then every time stuff like this comes up, I'm like, man, what else is going on that we're missing now? Like what other terrible thing is about to happen or just happen that The media is now not covering because they're so focused on this, which this is a big deal, but it also I I feel like that all this stuff just it's like a pickpocket. So every time like something somebody's like, Hey, look over there, I'm like, they're stealing money from somewhere. So who just who just got robbed? So Elwyn: Yeah, I they they are always doing that. But that you know, they we should demand that they have to work harder. You know. at Derek: Yeah, that's I mean Elwyn: the very least. You know, like the press hasn't been allowed in the Pentagon for a little over a year. We kind of stopped talking about that pretty soon after it happened. We're we're in a war and the press isn't allowed in the Pentagon, right? We don't know. Derek: Yeah and they're Elwyn: We we we rely and the media reports as fact, the numbers that the Pentagon puts out in terms of like munitions left and money spent You know, the media just kinda parrots it all. you know, w we need a couple of things. We need one, people to just across the political spectrum. I I kind of think like this ban is a little bit popular with MAGA, because I think they just hate they think the media is just against him anyway. So like, bah screw you. You have to be nice to you're not nice to him, you have to be nicer to him. Like, no, no, that's not the press's job. The press's job is not to be nice to him. But at the same time, this Trump and the press is kind of an abusive relationship. Like Why on earth does the press invite him to to the White House correspondence dinner to get up and give a speech? Like he hates you. He hates you. He hates everything Derek: Yeah. Correct. Elwyn: about you. Right? The only time he likes you is when he can use you. you know, so for the press to finally band together and be like, well, you know, I guess I guess this seems bad. It's like, no, bro, this is completely in line with with everything he's been doing. And you guys are just kind of asleep at the wheel until you get kicked out of the White House because you like the access, but you didn't really care about getting kicked out of the Pentagon. So we need the media to care more. And we need the independent journalists are the ones that are doing the work out there. So we just need to make sure that somehow they they're getting paid. this coming from a guy who doesn't Derek: Yeah. Elwyn: subscribe to any Substacks. Derek: Yeah. Yeah, but you know what the the thing that's crazy about all this is that you know the Pentagon thing happened just before they launched the war in Iran. And then conveniently the war in Iran, so many of the numbers that are coming out people are saying are false. Like we've lost way more people. The atrocities that are happening in Iran are far worse than what we actually know of what's going on. and then like you just said, the The ammunitions are not there and the US's vulnerability is far worse than it is, which you know, like I can understand that being a national security risk, right? If we're reporting that, hey, we have no we have no missiles or anything left to protect ourselves and now all of a sudden China's like, All right, well, we're in. But Elwyn: Yeah, but we deserve to know. Like, I don't like that's that's Derek: We deserve to know, yes. Elwyn: not a national security risk because it's reported. It's a national security risk because the imbeciles in charge of our of our Department of Defense don't know what the fuck they're doing in a war, and they're using all our munitions for some unspecified goal. you know, that we know about it through the reporting of the press. That's not that doesn't undermine our national security. What undermines our national security Is the fact that we don't have any weapons left. Derek: Yes, Pete Pete Hegseth undermines our national security. That's Elwyn: Yes. Derek: who that's who undermines our national security. well I wanted to jump into a little bit of the what happened here in Austin because it is national news. Another another guy gets shot delivering DoorDash, and I believe he was Venezuelan. If I yeah. and you know. shot basically through the back of his car. And now the video was released today that you can see the bullet that looks like it's like right on his spine. and apparently they like the his lawyers and his family were not allowed to see him in the hospital. And by the time they were apparently granted access, I guess he was already gone. They'd already put him in cuffs and tried to to move him to a detention center, which this whole thing is just I mean, dude, this is fucking terrible. If if all of this is actually accurate, like this is the most inhumane shit I could ever imagine. You shoot some guy, he's in the hospital for a couple hours, probably getting some stitches, and now he's already moved before he can talk to a lawyer. Like, this is just insane to me, man. This is not America. This isn't like Elwyn: Well, I think they made him sleep on the on the floor of the jail cell with the bullets still in his back. you know, and and it's a guy who I I was not here this weekend when that happened. so it did not it it did not blow up in Iowa, I can tell you that. but Derek: Okay. Elwyn: the because I think somehow we've become numb to it, just like with everything else. But like apparently there was a deportation order against the guy. They he was not the target of an investigation. They were kind of running license plates to see if they could see anybody who had a deportation order and his name popped up. I think there's some dispute about that deportation order or not, but I think he was here legally. you know, I don't Derek: Yeah. The that was the report I read is that he was he was still here legally, maybe an expired visa. Elwyn: Yeah, he hadn't I don't think he had yeah, he wasn't he wasn't in violation. He certainly wasn't a criminal. He wasn't one of these like gang members that they wanted deport. You know, he looks like he ran, they got chased, seems like put his car into a into a abutment. and then yeah, th then this is where it's like, no, there's there is always a better way. The cop gets out standing behind him and pumps four bullets into the car from you know, from the back of the car to the front of the car. Cop isn't wearing a body cam. Cop was hired by ICE like a little less than a year ago. So every issue about training and body cams and appropriate use of force is present here, just like with all the others. yeah, the the the guy did not have to be shot. Period. Like there's other ways to there's other ways to go about this, even if you're in favor of everything ICE is doing and you're like, well, he had a deportation order. Like the they they were correct. to pursue him and seek to pull him over and, you know, blah blah blah. Even even if that's your take, there's no there's no evidence that I've seen at all that this guy was a danger to the officers, such that he deserved to get shot. Derek: No, you have to be a heartless bastard to support any of the stuff going on. Cause the reports coming out of some of these detention centers are awful. that teenage girls, a bunch of the teenage girls are pregnant because of officers sexually assaulting and raping them. and then on top of that, apparently the the like a lot of the money that's circling these detention centers and a lot of the ICE budget is being just so mismanaged like all these people that are, furious about the, what is it, the Medicaid fraud in Minnesota and all this crap, but they're totally fine with Christy Gnomes jet and the mismanagement of billions of dollars of ICE money is just like blatantly being this is all right in front of our faces, currently happening and being reported on as it's happening, not after the fact. Like th this shit is just the I I'm so sick of it. I'm so tired of it. And I I I really, really am hopeful for these midterms. but you know Elwyn: Yeah, I don't think we know the half of what's going on. And I hope that once the administration changes, people on the inside will come out and and start to talk a little more. Once the press gets a little more access, does a little more digging, takes themselves you know, holds themselves to a standard at all, that we will start to learn. Derek: And what's Congress can start to actually pull back when Congress actually fucking does their job and starts passing laws to prov prevent and block all of this stuff, release the Epstein files, get us out of war, like all of the stuff that we've been waiting for to happen. Like this shit needs to happen, like ASAP. And unfortunately, my feeling is just that they're the powers that be, the people that r run our country, all the billionaires. That have incentive to keep us in war and keep all of this shit happening because they make their billions on our tax dollars getting funneled through to them through government contracts are gonna prevent it from happening. and they're they're trying to rig these elections, which is terrifying. But man, it w like this stuff has gotta end. And we're all paying the price for it. You know, we see it at the gas pump. Elwyn: Did you hear they are the DOJ is investigating Jeffrey Epstein's estate lawyers? Derek: Why? Because they still have videos that they're trying to collect yeah, they're trying to Elwyn: I was hey. Probably. But hey, someone someone's getting investigated. Derek: th yeah, they're probably investigating them so they can make sure to destroy any additional evidence that hasn't already been obtained by the DOJ. So that when con Elwyn: Yeah, I I would suspect that they know they've already cleared the decks, you know, on this investigation. There's already been I I'm pretty skeptical that this is, you know, somehow surprising after two years, these guys have been told like, Hey, you got like six months. Get get Derek: No Elwyn: start shredding documents. Derek: Correct. And well, and whatever is gonna happen is, you know, like the once the if Congress actually does turn over and turn blue and some of these things start to go through, like these are the things that are people are gonna start really pushing on. So if they were going to destroy evidence, like they're all doing it now out of fear that, you know, there is going to be a reckoning after November. So but I my hope is diminishing on all of that quickly. So Elwyn: Yep. There's another part of the of the media part that I think was interesting. Just it harkens back a little bit to the conversation we had about John Fetterman a few weeks ago where he had put his his bar for constitutional crisis at the the president ignoring court orders. And you know, there's no question that he wanted to he he did not immediately comply with the court order regarding the media ban. it took him a couple hours to let them back in. But he is also like actively and right now ignoring a a number of court orders when it comes to the immigration issue and deporting people to third parties. Where I think I saw this morning, you know, a court has basically said, you know, the the tweet I saw this morning for the guy was like, This is the court saying, Did I stutter? You know, where they've they've ordered the the Trump administration to not deport people to, I think, Ghana. Or the Ivory Coast or something. And the Trump administration is like, well, what about this? What about this? And the court's like, no, fucking no. You have to turn the plane around. Like they cannot go there. Turn the plane around. The Trump administration is hemming and hawing. And, you know, in Missouri, the the circuit courts in Missouri are openly in defiance of Supreme Court orders when it comes to which map is going to be utilized for this November's election. They're going to the to the Supreme Court now for the third time in three weeks. Supreme Court has already told them twice which maps to use. And they keep finding another court to say, no, no, no, we're gonna use the newer maps that are more favorable to Republicans. You know, there's open defiance of court orders going on all over the place. I suspect he couldn't defy the media ban one because it's just kind of too obvious, right? Like the the media is gonna be all over that a little too much. That the the the fruit is hanging too low on that one. But it is happening all over the place. Derek: it's frustrating because it's a bunch of people that I feel like are not doing their jobs to actually enforce all of this stuff and continue to push on it. which goes back to like Congress and them still not doing their jobs and leaving and going on vacation for seven weeks. like I was at a real estate conference this this this week, and it's interesting to me because We are experiencing the lowest number of real estate transactions in US history, if you account for population growth. So at the peak, I think in 2021, we hit seven million transactions, real estate transaction nationwide. We are potentially going to be right around or just under four million, which is even in like two thousand eight, we were still. Over that. so it's really interesting to to kind of see what's going on with our country right now. But and this is hands down an affordability crisis. they're saying a lot of Gen Z literally is just hoping and waiting for the real estate market to crash. Whereas the you if you trace all of this back, you it all comes back to inflation and Ga which is all traced back to gas prices currently and diesel prices, which is all traced back to Trump getting us into the Iran war and also not standing with Ukraine and and getting and allowing this Russia Ukraine war to continue to do what it's doing. Because now Ukraine is because they don't have the support of of the US and And a number of other countries, you know, like they're they're having to bomb Russian oil refineries and blow shit up, which that's when that's your response to what's going on. I mean, that affects the global, economy. And this is where we're at. And all of this leads back to the orange guy. All of this leads back to one person. And them making decisions on behalf of all of our country. So every fucking person that's furious at the gas pump, every trucker, all of them have to know that because any US pr any other US president is not supporting Putin. They're not treating Putin as an ally. They're not supporting Russia. They're backing Ukraine. They are making they're making sure. And look, I understand the concept of like not sending more money to Ukraine, but there were other ways that we could have supported them. throughout this to make sure that Russia that this because with the world support, Russia backs down in all of this. And there there probably is to some degree a you know, we're we're in a lull at least with that, rather than that them still actively fighting. But you know, this is just out of control. Elwyn: they Ukraine blew up a big refinery like two days ago. Yeah. Derek: Yeah, it was huge. And that's that that impacts oil prices just as much as the Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz. Elwyn: Yeah, I th I think people it really is interesting. The it feels like almost every day you feel a new a new wave of like this is all Trump's fault. The the polls are s are just incredible for the most part, you know, on on every level. And I it it's just so clear that, you know, outside of just being a Republican partisan hack. People more and more like, yeah, no, we cannot vote. We cannot vote for someone who is aligned with Trump at all. This is we're in this mess. Prices are going up. The economy is starting to stagnate. There are resilient signs within the economy for sure, but interest rates are above seven for the first time in two years. Mortgage interest mortgage rates are above seven for the first time in two years this morning, right? People see that. And there is, I think everybody. is well aware and cannot escape what you just said as the only conclusion. This is completely self-made. We were not thrust into a war in the Middle East. We chose to go to war in the Middle East. And now we've chosen to just kinda let it ride without a plan while the Houthis blow up pipelines in Saudi Arabia. We've chosen to take Putin's side and and not really try to get out to to find a resolution in the war in Ukraine. We've chosen to double down on every bad economic policy that there is. And when we choose to try to resolve it, we resolve it in a manner that hurts ranchers, right? By by bringing in exported international beef, foreign beef, instead of finding some way to help local cattle farmers. There is every single time, every single time this administration opens its mouth, it's to somehow somehow fuck over Americans. Right. Seven hundred and fifty thousand names were pulled off of the Obamacare registries. Now, I read that that credibly a lot of those names don't actually exist because of how mortgage how insurance brokers are incentivized, you know, where they can just create batches of names, submit them, and then they get paid on them. So that might actually be, you know, there might actually be a lot of fat to be trimmed there. But No doubt there's some people who are actually gonna lose their health insurance. And even if it's a good policy, like, wow, that's what you're gonna announce 42 days before an election, you know. And and what what are they saying? beef is expensive, eat more chicken. It's literally what they're saying, like buy salmon. You know, Derek: Yeah. Elwyn: work harder, you know, be be more fit, work harder so that you don't have to go to to the doctor. That's what like Dr. Oz is saying. It's like work for longer, don't retire at 62. Maybe you can work until 67, like. No, fuck off, right? Fuck off. Your your solution is we do more work while you get more wealthy. how about no? Derek: Yeah, it's it's awful. And to be honest, one of the only there's I mean, there's a handful of reasons why we're not in a full on economic recession at the moment. and the two big ones are first the investment in AI infrastructure across the country and the hopes that it still pays out because people are still funneling a crap ton of money into it, which is holding up the economy. And then the other part of this is the is real estate. So if you take the overall value of all of the real estate in the United States, it's right around $49 trillion. of that $49 trillion, there is, I think, $14 trillion owed on that. And this is the difference between 2008 and now, is because that means that Americans have still have about 35 trillion in equity that they are living on, essentially. And that's that's what's bolstering up the economy at the moment. When you go back and look at 2008 and 2009, the financial crisis, what was owed compared to what people had in equity in their houses was upside down. So there was more debt on homes in the United States than there was actual equity in in properties. And we we're not we're not even close to that threshold yet. And that in large part because of what happened in during the pandemic and housing prices. So but dude, if if we stay in this mode for another couple years, like there is and right now there's no fast way out of this. There is no there's there's no at this point just being like, hey, we're gonna we're gonna get out of Iran and then the this is all fixed. It's no, there's so much going on that's that's wrong. And you know, the Ukraine Russia war plays a big part in it. And then it no way, shape or form is the Even if we open the straighter whore moose, are is I mean, we're talking about probably a year until we can get gas prices down to something reasonable. So we're in this. I mean, we're in this for a while. And I think Americans need to know that all of this points back to the orange guy because he's the one in charge during all of this. So anything else we need to talk about with the news? Elwyn: I don't think so. Derek: All right. Well, we're gonna get into a really light topic today. Elwyn: It's lighting it up. Derek: Let's line it up with some with genocide, right? it's the lightest no. Well, we we had talked before and we're we're gonna start this one with a clip, a clip of Raging from Radio Raging Moderates a couple days ago with Abdul Sayyed talking with Scott Galloway and Jessica Tarlov about what the definition of genocide should be and Abdul Sayyed's opinion on that. So I think it's a good way to kick this off. So bear with us. This is a longer clip, but probably worth listening to and hearing anyway. So we'll start with that. So what's your what's your take on that? Elwyn: So the I've I have a number of takes on that. first, you know, b before we get into whether or not I think that there's been a genocide, you know, he he's Abdul Al-Say is a very, very smart guy. Okay. that doesn't mean that he's always right. And he's using a little bit of a rhetorical trick in there, right? Which I've I've now listened to that clip four or five times. I listened to that lo the longer interview and it's only becoming clear to me On each subsequent listen, right? What he says is the word genocide was created to describe a very big thing that happened. Therefore, we must use the word that describes a very big thing that happened to prevent the very big thing from happening. No, that's not the way language works. If if you know a a child is a child before they're an adult, you don't call a seven-year-old an adult. Because you think they're going to become an adult one day. They're a child, right? So you can't, you can't say, I'm worried that this thing might become a genocide, a word that ref that means the intent and action to kill, Scott Galloway defines it or defined it there, to to remove an entire people or an ethnicity or a religious group. You can't use that to describe that not happening. You can't use that to prevent that thing from happening. That's not the way language works. That's not what the word means, right? You can't say they, I fear they're going to commit a genocide, therefore we're going to call this a genocide. And that's extremely relevant here because Saudi Arabia took this case, not Saudi Arabia, South Africa took this case to the International Court of Justice in December of 2023, saying that this was that that there was a genocide going on. There were people calling what Israel did a genocide on like October 11th of 2023, before anything had happened. Now, it's a little icky to talk about whether or not something is genocide because the word describes something big and very, very icky. Right. So, you know, does one group have the intent and are they taking actions to kill everybody? Basically, to eliminate a group of people. You know, and in this case, Israel just isn't doing that. You know, and the word then is being used for some other purpose, right? And Al Sayyed kind of gives the game away when he says, No, we need to use the word in order to get people fired up about the thing. Well, no, you don't. No, you don't. Use the words that matter, use the words that are appropriate. Israel's committing war crimes. We believe Israel's committing war crimes. Sure. I'm sure I'm I'm quite certain there have been war crimes committed along the way, right? he also says that we are aiding and embedding the very people that are preventing a two state solution from happening. That is precisely generously 50% of the story, right? That assumes, let's assume for a moment that Israel is uninterested in a two state solution. Okay. And I think at this point in time and in September twenty twenty six. That's probably accurate. I'm not so sure Israel's all that interested in a two-state solution. You know who else is uninterested in a two-state solution? Hamas and the Palestinian Authority and almost all of the Middle East around it around them. So you can't sit there and say, well, I'm gonna use genocide because I don't want a genocide to happen. And that makes the the use of the word correct because it doesn't. Genocide's a descriptor. Necessarily Derek: Mm-hmm. Elwyn: almost. It has to Be met with extraordinary evidence or be describing something in the past, right? You have to prove it. You can't use a word like genocide, a descriptive word, to say, no, it doesn't matter if one's happening or not, we have a moral authority to prevent one from happening. Therefore, we're going to use the word that describes one happening to to prevent it. No, sorry, that's a that's a rhetorical trick that doesn't work. And second of all, you have to, in this conversation, and this never ever happens anymore, you have to. Have to acknowledge a couple of things. One, there is no desire for a two-state solution on any side of this issue. Period. Any anybody who tells you otherwise is fucking lying or they don't understand. Right? Hamas, the Palestinians, the people in the West Bank, Iran, Lebanon, none of them want a two-state solution. There's no momentum behind a two-state solution at all on any side of the on any side of the issue. Okay. I would love a two-state solution. But how can you have a two-state solution, say the people in Israel correctly, when Hamas has always said and has continued to say that their goal is the destruction of the state of Israel and the murder of all Jews? Right? So it's not Israel that doesn't want a two state solution, generally speaking. Israel has worked hard in the past to try and create an environment where a two state solution can be had. That's how Hamas came into power. When in 2005 Israel left the Gaza Strip, fully left. All citizens were ordered to leave, all military bases Derek: Mm-hmm. Elwyn: were disbanded, all military members left. They dug up any cemeteries, any dead people that had been buried in Gaza. They dug them up and reinterred them in Israel. And they said, Go forth, Gazans, have an election. And Derek: Mm-hmm. Elwyn: they did, and they elected Hamas. Right? We forget. What happened on October seventh, right? Where the express intent was a genocide. Now, the Israeli officials after Sept October 7th engaged in some pretty heated rhetoric that has come back to bite them in the ass, where people like Abdul Al-Sayed or Mehdi Hassan, they turn on that and they say, Look, they expressed genocidal intent, right? They said these animals should all die. And you can argue, well, they were talking about Hamas, not all Palestinians, whatever, but There's no nuance in arguments like this anymore. But, you know, Israel is providing tens of thousands of polio vaccines now. Israel is allowing 2,500 calories a day per Gazan of nutrition to be put in, to be allowed in now through their border. Egypt's border with Gaza is completely shut with, I think, seven different walls. That and gates that you have to go through to get from Egypt to Gaza, and Egypt does not let a soul through. Israel lets vaccines through. Israel also has done some terrible shit, but you can't tell me that they have the intent to kill everybody when they're providing polio vaccines. I'm sorry. You can make any argument about war crimes and about you hate Netanyahu and about bombing hospitals and you can ignore the tunnels and you can ignore all of that stuff, but you cannot tell me that you have the intent. To destroy a population if you are simultaneously vaccinating that population. That's a life-saving measure to prevent disease in terrible conditions. And you can say, well, they created the conditions, yes, but they're trying to people keep people alive in those conditions. That's not genocidal intent. Period. Like I I just don't see any refuting that. Now there's a couple other things that could that are that I noticed with this, and I'm cooking a little bit, so I apologize. One. Derek: No, keep going. Elwyn: I'm fairly certain, I need to go back and look at like January news reports from January 2024. I'm fairly certain that the number of Gazans killed has stayed the same in news reports for two years. That in January, February 2024, people were talking about 70,000 Gazans have been killed, 30,000 kids have been killed. Right. And we're still talking about 70,000 Gazans who have been killed. And that number includes Hamas combatants. That is not all civilians. Anyone who tells you otherwise is fucking lying. Right. And they had fully formed brig brigades. So at the very least, there's tens of thousands of Hamas soldiers who are dying. Right. And it's horrible to say, but people die in war. There is collateral damage. There are collateral lives lost in war. And you seek to minimize them. And Israel is seeking to minimize them when they drop leaflets, when they tell people in buildings, we're gonna bomb this building, right? When they go building to building, they they are seeking to minimize. Civilian deaths to the best of their ability, right? Which again, not genocidal intent. another thing, if you look at the birth rates in Gaza, which have gone down, and people say, well, that's an e that's evidence of of genocide. No, that's not evidence of intent of anything. It's evidence of birth rates. But if you take the birth rate of something like 150 people a day, which was the last number I I looked at, and you multiply by 365 days a year, and you multiply that by two and a half years. You find 70,000 people killed and like 115,000 people born. If you look at the population numbers for Gaza, at the top end, it's two or three percent of the population lost in Gaza in three years. S 40% of Jews were killed in the Holocaust. In other, in Armenia, in the Armenian Holocaust, it was close to 100%. In the Uyghur genocide, right, it's something like 70%. The numbers when you look at genocide, you know, they are in the third, half, two-thirds, all of populations being destroyed in shorter time periods. The other thing that's I've that I've noticed Derek: Yeah. Elwyn: is people are more and more starting to refer to this in the past tense. Now Elsaya doesn't, right? But you'll say, you'll hear more and more if you're listening, like you listen to breaking points, you know, they'll they'll start to slip in with a like, yeah, they did a genocide. Or when Israel was was doing the genocide. They're starting to talk about it more and more in the past tense. Now, do you want to jump in or do you want me to keep going? Derek: no, I mean this it from my perspective, this is all super interesting to me because this is all stuff that I've I mean, since we started this podcast, I was not super educated on the topic. So this is all stuff that I'm careful to enter my opinion into the chat because I don't think it matters as a giant Swedish dude. so I you know, I I prefer for you to to cook. So I did want to read this to you because I was curious your your thoughts on this as I was doing some research for today's pod was just that you know the Amnesty International and the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry have concluded that Israel's conduct can constitutes a genocide. So Israel categorically reject rejects that conclusion, and the International Court of Justice has not issued a final judgment finding Israel committed a genocide. the South South Africa versus Israel case remains to be a relevant international legal proceeding. So I was just curious, like, and you kind of I think had touched on that a hair, but you know, there are kind of what you would call, you know, the official who who the the people that would generally decide if something was a genocide or not have been calling this a genocide. Elwyn: Yeah, so well the ICJ has not, right? And the prosecutor on the case has not issued warrants or issued charges against anybody. They seem to be just kind of like letting it sit. I'm not exactly sure what's going on, but they made that ruling, they made their ruling in December twenty twenty three or January twenty twenty four. We're close to three years past that ruling. You know, I I I kind of feel like if they felt strongly one way or the other, the ICJ would have made a referral. For s for criminal charges. the UN and Amnesty International, I do not feel are are neutral arbiters here. Right. Amnesty International came under some fire in like 2020 or 2021 for listing Israel, I think, as like one of the few apartheid states in the world. Right. And they listed like some set of abuses, right? And it's just It's just hilarious to see videos now. I saw one the other day of like a beachfront area in Gaza with traffic flowing and and buildings and commerce and people living their lives, right? With that same area being bombed to rubble now, and map that over the rhetoric that this was an open-air prison that was the victim of apartheid. It's like, well, wait a second. That's not what I saw in that video. I saw a country where a lot of shit was going on, you know, and people were happily going to the beach and driving to work. You know, Israel has, I think, 20% of their Knesset, their elected officials are Arabs. They have 20 something, some similar percentage of judges. They have CEOs of hospitals that are Arab Israelis. They have You know, Arab Israelis are woven into the fabric of Israeli society in a way that simply cannot be said of an apartheid state. There were no black judges in South Africa. Because it was an apartheid state. If you're wondering why there were no black judges in South Africa, it's because it was an apartheid state. Right? You simply cannot map historical historical precedent over what's gone on in Israel and call it an apartheid state. The people who were killed on October 7th. Hundreds of them worked to help Gazans. They worked in hospitals. They were doctors. They helped bring them across the border. They they employed them on farms and in kibbutzes. Right? These were people who wanted peace. Right? And there's always been a tension there. I'm not, I'm not ignorant of the fact that there's tension between Arabs and Israelis, okay? But there is inflammatory rhetoric that is used towards Israel that is simply one, not justified and two, not accurate. The UN, I believe, has no credibility on this whatsoever. The UN Security Council has issued more human rights violation resolutions against Israel than it has any other country combined. That includes like Iran and Yemen and Iraq and, you know, countries who we all know are committing hosts of human rights violations every day, all the time. Right? The UN has looked at credible evidence of Hamas stealing aid and reselling it. For higher prices and said this is not happening. They did that for two years. And I think like a month ago, sometime this summer, they came out and they were like, Yeah, actually, that has happened. That has happened. The UN Council on Women took something like two years to acknowledge that Hamas sexually assaulted and raped Israeli women on October 7th. It took them years to acknowledge that. Years. Derek: Yeah. Elwyn: So I just don't see them as a neutral arbiter on this stuff at all. which is sad because I think it should be. Now, The word genocide, the word apartheid, but genocide in particular, like there's a new thing going on now with because people are starting to people on the Israeli side, on the Jewish side, are starting to talk a little bit more like, folks, not a genocide. Don't love that you're calling this a genocide. And we feel like you're doing that because you're tired of Jews talking about the Holocaust. And more and more people are being like, Yeah, kinda. We are. Stop talking about the Holocaust. We don't care Derek: Mm. Elwyn: anymore, right? Like you don't own that. You don't own the word genocide because it was created to describe the thing that happened to you, right? Stop. Yeah, a little bit, right? Like we we own it a little bit, right? Derek: I think that would actually make you the owner of it 'cause yeah. Elwyn: And you know, that is another reason why, like, yeah, this this pushback on the use of the word. It's not the accurate use of the word by definition. The facts don't don't support it, but also it Does really feel like to me as a Jewish American who's extremely critical of Israel and extremely critical of Netanyahu and his government and what's gone on, and who, when they cut off food aid to Gaza in 2024, I thought that was awful, right? I thought that was a war crime. I thought that was disgraceful. No, no excuse for that whatsoever. Okay. Zero. but no, I feel, I very palpably feel like, yeah, people are using that word because they know. why it exists. As El Sayyed said, he knows where that word came from and he's using it on purpose to get people's to get people peaked, as he said. Right? Well fuck you. Okay? Fuck you. I don't know if that's anti-Semitism or not, but it really is like guys, the state of Israel exists and is important to Jews because of the Holocaust. Okay? Because if if J.D. Vance wins an election and puts some shitbags in place and they want to start killing Jews, right? You've got Nazi people wearing swastikas at the 9-11 memorial this year, right? Or if some crazy ass group on the left comes in and wants to create concentration camps of Jews in the United States, we all know we can go to Israel. We don't have to support their government. We can hate what Netanyahu does, but we know that for the first time in our history in 1948, There is a place we can go where there where we can hide behind an army, not hide, where we can stand proudly behind an army that will defend us. And if people want to come fight to kill us, they can come fight to kill us, and we'll stand behind that army and we'll fight. Because throughout history, that's what's happened. And for the first time in history, because of the genocide of the Holocaust, we have a state where we can use that. And I think it's extremely intentional that people on the left are using the word genocide precisely to strip it of its meaning. El Sayed twists that and he says, no, you have to uphold its meaning by trying to prevent it from happening. No, that's not what's happening in my eyes, in my opinion. What's happening is the word is being bastardized and its meaning diluted, with at least the partial intent of. Stripping the importance, the historical importance of the Holocaust, and stripping the historical justification and facts around the creation of the state of Israel, of removing those things from the conversation. So, yeah, words have meanings and and I'm glad that people are and myself too, right? I didn't I ran I hid from this conversation for too long, but I'm not hiding from it now. you know. Derek: But I think one of the things to note here that's just from from my perspective is that if you were anti-Semitic, calling this a genocide would be the most anti-Semitic thing you could do because of that exact reason. You're the thing the thing that created Israel is the very thing that now you're using against them. and you know it's interesting because like intent is such a Like I think about all and we've talked about this before is I I I think about the Israel, you know, Palestine, and most of what's going on in the Middle East. I look at it kind of like a marriage, is that it's just so hard to boil any of these things down to black and white, because the there is so much history behind the hatred of everything that goes on in the Middle East. and deep hatred, including what we believe the meaning of life is, right? So when you talk about religion and everything that we do on this earth, for a lot of people, the very meaning of why they think they're here very much resides in these conversations. And so it gets really hard to boil any of this down and understand somebody's intent behind what they're doing. So you really do you We really do have to just look at actions and behaviors. And I think your synopsis of a lot of this is is really important. From now from like somebody that's not Jewish, like I look at this argument in general as something that like this when when we had discussed what we were gonna talk about today, and you had brought this up, my initial my initial response inside my head was like, Man. Can we are we going to be able to talk about that for long enough? Cause I just don't see this as being something that like the word genocide to me didn't carry that much meaning. And so it took actually just listening to you now to understand that, yeah, like for somebody that is actually hates Jewish people, calling this anti-Semitic would actually be would fall right in line with what they were trying to accomplish. Because if you hate somebody, you want to use the very thing that was happening to them. And be like, it's a gotcha moment. Like, see this thing that you you guys claim happened to you. Now you're doing it to other people. whereas I don't know that you can actually make that case at all here based on you know what's happening actually in in Gaza. And so my it is hard for people on the outside, I think, to wrap their brain around the history and and also just what it means for a Jewish person. their love and understanding of what Israel is. You know, we're we're far enough removed from World War II for people to really have an a a general idea of of what that actually means. and you know, we see this I I watched the 9-11 a 9-11 documentary with my kids a couple nights ago and I forced them to sit down and watch it with me because they don't understand the historical implications of what that that day meant to somebody like me. Like this was the first time I've ever felt unsafe in our country. And it took watching that with them for them to understand the importance of that day and everything that went on. Because right now to them, all it is is like a, 9-11, that's a day something bad happened. You know? And it historical relevance, you know, it plays into all of this and the meaning behind it for s people like us, like you you have to actually start to take A little like you have to understand like so many layers of this to really intelligently sit down and call something what it is. And I think that there is a lot of people right now, especially young people out screaming, you know, in the free Palestine movement that are calling it things like this genocide that have no historical context or understanding of what actually went on. Elwyn: Yeah, and you know, someone who's screaming free Palestine is not interested in a two-state solution, by the way, because Derek: Mm-hmm. Elwyn: what they're talking about as the state of Palestine includes Israel. Right? They're they're talking about, you know, they're talking about removing some people, not just Gazans, right? They're not talking about the Gaza Strip. They're talking about that whole area. Free it from what? Free it from the control of the state of Israel, right? and probably from the Jews too, more and more people talking freely about that. but you know, I think you're exactly right, but also sometimes it's helpful to go up to thirty thousand feet and you know, some words to go back to the word, some words To properly understand them, in my opinion, less nuance works better than more. Right? And in this one, if you're talking about genocide, you are talking about actions and the intent to eliminate a a an entire nationality, an entire religion, an entire country. There's not a lot of nuance there. You know, there really isn't. Derek: No and Elwyn: If if you are if you're working with genocidal intent, you have to be working You know, in synchronicity across a whole host of areas. If is if Israel wants to commit genocide in Gaza, and I said this on like October ninth, I feel like they could do it in about a weekend, right? But even if they didn't, if they wanted to do it much slower for whatever reason, they would still have to be working, you know, against aid, against vaccines, against everything that they're doing, which helps to try to keep people alive. They would need to be working in an international community to hide what they're doing, which they do keep things a little bit secret, but people do come out, right? There's a movie that just came out with a bunch of interviews with Israeli Israeli soldiers. so no, I I don't think genocide calls for nuance. Derek: Well, dude, I this is we s I'm with you on this because when so I had never been to DC. Tamara and I went to DC earlier this year for the first time. and one of the one of the main things I wanted to do while I was there was go to the Holocaust Museum. And it was the first time I've been. And there is if you don't so like this generation, Gen Z and like a lot of the younger people They have no idea what the Holocaust actually was, right? They're so their opinions of Israel are what's happening right now. But if you haven't gone to the Holocaust Museum and you haven't seen what it looked like for millions of Jews to be put in gas chambers, and that when the Americans showed up, they literally had to bulldoze bodies into trenches because Because of how many there were like dead people lying around. And there's video of all of this. There's like like all of this stuff is actually around. If you don't actually take the time to understand a little bit of that, then calling this a genocide is easy, but it's very flippant. It's very, Elwyn: Yes. Derek: it's it's very I have no actual idea of what Jews went through in the Holocaust to to and comparing the two. is just not i it's it's not a fair comparison. Elwyn: I wanna see if I can find this thing that I read this past weekend, which I don't think I can find it quick enough. I can. So this was in a in a coffee table book of photography about a guy who's Jewish, but he went to to the Ukraine for pictures. And he says, you know, he talks about this famous massacre of Jews in Ukraine in a ravine, you know, on September 29th, 1941. Thirty three thousand Jews were ordered to assemble at this ravine and then forced, quote, to remove their luggage, then their coats, shoes, and over garments, and also underwear. Once undressed, the Jews were led into the ravine. When they reached the bottom of the ravine, they were seized by members of the local police and made to lie down on top of Jews who had already been shot. The corpses were literally in layers. A police marksman came along and shot each Jew in the neck with a submachine gun. Thirty three thousand in one day. In one day. That's a holocaust. That's a genocide, people. Like that, marching people, regardless of age, gender, medical condition, ability, marching, and and it's not even that's not even a concentration camp. That's not even the trains pulling in and being led straight to the gas chambers. That's some ravine, it's not in Poland or Austria or Germany. It's in Ukraine. Right? That is the specific intent and Actions by a government, the German nationalist government, the Nazi Party, to eliminate a people. That's what that looks like. And you cannot, you cannot dilute that. Right? It is offensive. It is offensive to people who are connected to that and any of the other genocides that have happened throughout the world and any of the genocides that are happening now that nobody seems to give a shit about, like in Sudan and Yemen. It is offensive. To dilute the word and then say, well, we're only doing it, we're using the word early to make sure that it an actual genocide doesn't happen. It's a preemptive use of the word, right? No, no, no, no. Sorry, El Sayyed. And and interestingly, in that clip, just to bring it back to that clip, you can hear Scott Galloway's emotion in that. And that that clip goes on, they speak for about 30 minutes, that section of the of the podcast. and they push back on El Sayed pretty hard and he stands his ground pretty firmly. and you know, it's clear from listening to that that Galloway and El Cyed have a history where they agree on on a lot of things. And Galloway at the end is just like hard disagree, would not vote for you, basically. Derek: Yeah. Well, and look, the I think the people that understand the history are going to to stand like in agreement with this. Like, I mean, if you but if you are somebody that is far enough removed from the Holocaust, and this is the shitty part about history, is and why history repeats itself, is because once we're far enough removed, we forget. And Elwyn: Yep, it's a great point. Derek: as we forget, Words lose their meansing meaning because we don't we don't remember. we're we're humans. And so as shitty as all of this is, you know, like there's a lot of great things about El Sayyed. And, you know, I think I think that they're I I would tend to agree that using this as a as genocide is is probably more fli or saying the word genocide in regards to what happened with Palestine because look, as fucked up as Preventing a food source from going into Palestine and allowing people to to starve. I I absolutely 1000% disagree with. But those are also warning signals, and also something that can be remediated with food. Like once you allow food to start flowing again, you can nourish the body again and come back. You don't come back from a gas chamber. You know, like that's just Elwyn: I took I took my I took my Star of David off, my Star of David necklace off when they did that. And I now have two on. Right. I've I have two. One Derek: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Elwyn: to represent that I'm that I'm Jewish and another to represent my support for the state of Israel's existence. you know, so I've I've been through it up and down on this one. Okay, but you know, at some point I have to stand back up. Derek: Yeah. And my my stance on this is I can give people grace where there's misunderstanding and and lack of perspective. but when people understand it gets a little bit harder for me to to act to like it means your your words are more intentional with that. And so which is it's shitty, but this stuff is so complicated and it's it's challenging to for anybody to to make to fully grasp and wrap their head around all of the things that are going on at the same time while meanwhile you know the fucking world is burning on top of that so everything else is a is a it's a huge struggle so we're here talking about it does the word genocide mean genocide while you know like half of America is is struggling to buy food at the moment as well so you know It's it's it's a challenge to to balance this stuff the way and give it the weight that it needs to to be given. but this is why, you know, we have elections and complex issues and people get the opportunity to vote for somebody who they feel like stands and stands with them and believes the same things they do, or at least on the important stuff, right? So Well, are we telling somebody to shut the fuck up today? Who Elwyn: A little bit. I thought about being the guy that I was sitting next to at the Iowa football game who said, one fish, two fish, redfish, Jewfish. to which I turned around and Derek: yeah, that guy can shut the fuck up. Elwyn: said, What the fuck was that? And he was like, I said blue fish. I was that's not what I heard. but no, I I Derek: Are you sure Elwin's just not on high alert all the time right now? Yeah. Elwyn: I am on high alert. you know, but Lisa Bianco have heard the same thing. Derek: Okay. And it is Iowa, by the way. Elwyn: yeah, it is Iowa. The no, this is less shut the fuck up, although maybe me-ish, but more an interesting feeling I had earlier today. There's this guy at my gym, he's a new member at my gym, and when he first came to ask questions about it, he got out of his car and he was wearing a full robe, like, you know, full Muslim, Islam religious robe, has a beard, you know, asks me some questions about the gym. winds up joining with his son. Very, very nice guy. I'm gonna say that over and over again to make myself feel better about some of the preconceived notions that I had, right? Very, very nice guy. You know, chatting with him during classes. Where do you live? I live right around here. I think I'd probably walk by your house. Turns out I do walk by his house all the time. there there are features about the house like in the landscaping that make it memorable to me. And a couple days after he joined, I was walking by his house and I saw what I assume was his wife out tending to some plants in a pot in a full black burqa. The full the full black thing, right? And I recognized their car. I mean if I didn't Derek: With just the eyes or face out? Elwyn: see the f I didn't see the face 'cause she was facing away from me, but full black headdress, full black robes, You know, I would assume it was just the eyes or certainly just the face. you know, and I recognized his car in the driveway. So I knew it was him. And now I'm just kind of like, fuck, man. And like he was doing some back squats. He complained about shoulder pain and like tells me he sleeps like this. And also he sleeps on the floor. It's like, you know, like, God damn it. And this is like the week of September 11th. I'm like, I don't know. I'm doing a memorial wad on the 11th on Friday. Kind of hope this guy doesn't show up. Right. I make sure to say in conversation that I'm Jewish. Right. I'm having all these like, you know, fuck man, was this guy's cousin like on a plane on September September eleventh thoughts? Right. And I'm Derek: Mm-hmm. Elwyn: not I'm deeply unproud of myself for having them. Because at every interaction, he's the an exceptionally nice guy. And he's working out next to, you know, a a gay gentleman. And he's working out next to women who are wearing shorts and tank tops. Right? He he is clearly assimilating himself and his son into society without any hesitation or misgiving. And here I am with these terrible thoughts. Right. But I'm still looking for like, give me something. Give me something I can hang on to. Right. Because in my mind, this guy is like sleeping on the floor because he was in Gitmo for 10 years. So I I ask him what he does for a living. He says, I'm a teacher. So I'm like, what do you do? He says, I teach the Quran and Islamic theology. I'm like, God damn it, that didn't help me at all. Right. But then I think, you know what? I'm gonna ask this guy, will he teach me? Will will I I wanna learn from him? Right? I want I have questions. We feel the in this country a very specific way about Muslims. We have a lot of preconceived notions, all the things that were going on in my head. And I have no doubt that the people, the terrorists that on September 11th don't represent the the majority of Muslim or The the their reading of the the religion of the text is bastardized or wrong in some way to the majority of people, but I want to know more. And this guy can tell me more. Right. So I asked him, will he teach me? He says, sure. And he says, I'm going to bring you some materials. And today he brought me some materials, you know, understanding Islam and a copy of the Quran in English. And I was like, great, thank you. You know, well, text set some time up. And I put set them in my car and I left the gym to come home. And I felt Palpably weird. Derek: Mm. Elwyn: with the with that material next to me. Right. Like, wow, I wonder what the person at the stoplight next next to me thinks if they look in the car and they see this on the seat. You know, I've told Lisa I was going to do this, but do I want to leave the Quran hanging around? you know, or should I like put it in my bedside drawer? Like and the point of me saying this is not I'm right or I'm wrong or good or bad or anything. It was just this recognition of this very visceral feeling. Created by having this very what has become a very controversial text in our in our lifetime. And maybe it was always controversial, I don't know. But certainly to me, you know, as a Jewish American, probably to you, having lived through September 11th, just this text that is its existence has all this meaning attached to it. And we don't know anything about it unless we've read it and sought to understand it. And it created just this visceral feeling in my entire body that I was like, wow. This is really, really interesting that just having it on the car seat next to me felt strange, felt weird, or like I might be doing something wrong. Or does this mean that I'm trying to convert to Islam? No, of course it doesn't. I'm seeking to learn. Right. But will anybody who sees that immediately think, this person's trying to convert to Islam in the same way that they would think if I had a copy of King King James Bible on the seat next to me, but an Israeli star on the window? Derek: Mm. Elwyn: No, they wouldn't think anything of it, right? So it's not really a shut the fuck up, but it's it is just an interesting, it's just a really interesting examination of my own thought process and the stereotypes. And as and as hard as I try to, you know, not have them, how prevalent they still are, you know, even in the face in this instance of an individual who appears to be among the top five nicest individuals I've ever met. Derek: Yeah. Two Elwyn: St interesting. Derek: kudos. Like that's the we need people in our world that are doing that. And even though it felt uncomfortable for you, like it's fucking awesome that you did that. And it probably means a lot to that guy too that you that you were willing to ask questions and see because yeah, Elwyn: He was delighted. He was beaming. Derek: yeah, dude. This is man, when we can approach life with curiosity. rather than a stamp of us trying to make everybody think and believe the way we do, we make the world a a far better place. And so and a lot of hate can be disposed when people feel seen, heard, and understood. and so even when it even when it comes to to something like that, like that's a hard thing to do in a lot of circumstances. but when it's done, I think All parties win. And it doesn't mean that you have to agree or convert. It just means that you you're willing to understand somebody and meet them where they're at. and most people like when you actually do that, it it creates a bridge that's, you know, we're all fucking human and we're all operating under the the assumption that, you know, what we believe is what happens when we die. and none of us actually fucking know. So unless you've died and come back. Elwyn: Yeah, the the interesting thing is Derek: You have no idea. Elwyn: when I yeah. When I when I brought it up with him, he immediately understood, you know, what I was asking. You know, he immediately understood like, yes, there are people who misinterpret it s who misinterpret sections of the Quran and we and it is important to understand what the Quran says and how they're in misinterpreting it. You know, there was no there was no sort of like doubt, you know, In his mind about like, no, this is it wasn't like, I want to convert this guy, or you know, I'm gonna teach him why these you know, he was like, No, those people are wrong. People look at bin Laden. He said this. He said, People look at bin Laden, and he pointed to his beard, and he says, He has the beard and he wears a headdress, and they assume this is a religious individual. He re he represents the religion, but he doesn't. You know, that that's what th this guy's name is Rayhan. That's what Rayhan said. He's he he made that exact almost word for word what he said, and it was just Really interesting to me. Again, maybe it shouldn't have been. It if I know analytically that most pe most Derek: But you Elwyn: mo most Muslims aren't don't feel that way. But you know, it's just interesting it'd be an interesting journey. Derek: Yeah, we s we experience the same thing across all religions, right?
