- 0:00when you think about it, they added Jack Sparrow into the ride after
- 0:03the movie did so well. If
- 0:04Mm-hmm.
- 0:05this movie did well, would they have added Eddie Murphy to the haunted mansion?
- 0:09Whoa.

- 0:56You're welcome, of course.
- 0:57Now I'm gonna turn off my phone's flashlight so the battery doesn't die.
- 1:00Yeah.
- 1:00Yeah, that's probably wise.
- 1:02~ yeah, so every year if you're new to our podcast,
- 1:06every year we have
- 1:08Bryce Bridgman. if you don't know him,
- 1:09he does our artwork for our show.
- 1:10And he's an expert on Halloween.
- 1:13So this
- 1:14He he is.
- 1:15week in order to continue our ~ actually continue
- 1:19and finalize our series, ~ on the Disney movies that were Disney
- 1:26attractions turn movies, ~ we figured we would Dardoms,
- 1:30Dardoms. That's that's the acronym we came up with.
- 1:32that's right. We we just Yep, we came up with that,
- 1:35yep. Dardoms.
- 1:36Good old Artems.
- 1:38we
- 1:38figured we'd finalize this one with the good old two thousand and three version
- 1:42of the Haunted Mansion.
- 1:46Starring Eddie Murphy. Yes, certified.
- 1:46A certified classic. yeah.
- 1:49Certified classic. had y'all seen
- 1:51This was a
- 1:52this one in a long time?
- 1:55before this year had been ~ quite some time,
- 1:59but I will tell you that back in the day when me and my brothers were kids,
- 2:02this was prime ~ watching the back of the van material for us.
- 2:06We would just like replay
- 2:07Ooh, okay.
- 2:07the scenes with the singing busts over and over when we were kids.
- 2:11It would it would annoy the crap out of Logan when we would do it.
- 2:14Yeah.
- 2:15So this is technically a certified staple for you.
- 2:19You'd consider that.
- 2:20I I'd say so.
- 2:21Yeah, yeah. It's like I I don't care I don't care what ~ critical scores
- 2:25or or your tomato meters have to say this movie is a classic,
- 2:29alright? You can't take
- 2:29Mm-hmm.
- 2:30it away from me. I don't care if you remake it twenty years later,
- 2:33alright? You can't take this
- 2:34Mm-hmm.
- 2:34from me.
- 2:36That's true. They did make this movie three times.
- 2:39Which is a lot, 'cause
- 2:43They kid they just keep trying to get it right.
- 2:43I don't think they've made they've done that how many times
- 2:46has Disney remade a movie three times?
- 2:49In general. I don't know.
- 2:54I don't know. It's a good question.
- 2:56Jeremy, when was the last time you saw this movie?
- 2:58yeah. ~
- 3:00dude I don't even know if I've seen this one all the way through.
- 3:04I think I've seen it a bunch of times,
- 3:06but never finished it. I don't think we ever had this one on D V D or VHS.
- 3:06Okay. No. ~
- 3:11So I was
- 3:12To the mercy of the cable TV I was near,
- 3:15you know, which wasn't
- 3:16Mm-hmm.
- 3:17often. So
- 3:18Yeah, if if it ever came on at all.
- 3:20Mm-hmm.
- 3:20Right,
- 3:20yeah. So maybe around Halloween they'd show it at school or
- 3:24Yeah. I I I've only seen this maybe a couple times.
- 3:28I I feel like I remember watching it at like some relative's house one time
- 3:32and then I feel like we got it from the library.
- 3:35Probably the first time we watched it.
- 3:37Genuine question for you guys.
- 3:37He wouldn't shout out back.
- 3:39because this is something that happened to me recently.
- 3:40If you have actual dreams with Freddie Krueger in them,
- 3:45should you be concerned?
- 3:48Yes.
- 3:49I
- 3:50y you should.
- 3:51I was about to say, 'cause it's like that actually happened to me and I woke
- 3:54up and I thought, this could be a problem
- 3:59Is that the kid for my Carly?
- 3:59That's neither
- 4:02No, that'd be terrifying.
- 4:03That's scarier.
- 4:06No no no. Unrelated but a little spooky anecdote I thought I'd share with you guys.
- 4:11Yeah.
- 4:11Yeah,
- 4:12Hey, you know what, Jeremy? I think we've reached that section of the podcast.
- 4:16Let's talk about the ride.
- 4:17Yeah.
- 4:18Wow wee, what an organic and completely natural transition!
- 4:19Now ~
- 4:23Bryce, so we all grew up in Florida.
- 4:26~ I'm assuming you went to Disney as as a kid at some point.
- 4:30Did have you ridden the
- 4:31you bet your bottom dollar?
- 4:32Haunted Mansion attraction?
- 4:34I did and it's one of my ~ two favorite attractions in all the Disney parks.
- 4:39Can you guess what the other one is?
- 4:40~
- 4:40Well
- 4:41~ The Country Bears Jamboree.
- 4:44Star Tours.
- 4:46No, it's me we're talking about fellas.
- 4:48If my if one of the rides I like is Haunted Mansion,
- 4:51the other one I like is ~
- 4:53The Hall of Presidents.
- 4:56yeah, that's really scary. I was gonna say ~ Tower of Terror,
- 5:00my friend. ~ yeah.
- 5:00Tower of Terror, okay.
- 5:02Those those two.
- 5:02Would you believe that
- 5:03we just did that movie?
- 5:06Really?
- 5:07Yes. The T V movie. Y yeah.
- 5:07Did would you believe there is a movie based on the Tower of Terror?
- 5:11first time hearing about it, I did not know this.
- 5:14It was a nineties
- 5:14It is not good.
- 5:15TV movie.
- 5:16You would love it, maybe.
- 5:19I was about
- 5:19Yeah.
- 5:20to say, someth if it's Halloween related and it's not good,
- 5:23that doesn't necessarily stop me.
- 5:25~ so I'm gonna tell you that much.
- 5:26It'll make it on your list your monthly list.
- 5:26Yeah. For sure.
- 5:28I know you've got yeah,
- 5:29every year you've got your Halloween calendar all planned out of how you're gonna
- 5:32yeah.
- 5:33celebrate. So you gotta add that one into the rotation at some point.
- 5:36I got I got the whole itinerary for this year and everything all ready to go.
- 5:39I gotta show next year when I do it again,
- 5:40I'll show you guys. But ~
- 5:42Okay. It it
- 5:43Not
- 5:44is very hard to find on D V D.
- 5:44this year when you've done it this year.
- 5:45Next year
- 5:46when you do it.
- 5:46We're we're well into this year,
- 5:48my friend. It's it's it's ~
- 5:49you know, it's old and yeah,
- 5:49He's already halfway through.
- 5:51it's been sitting out for a little while now.
- 5:52It's still candy. You gotta wait for the good stuff now.
- 5:53Yeah. Hmm.
- 5:55But ~ I do ~ I I always make it a point where if I'm in Magic Kingdom I I have
- 6:02to go to Haunted Mansion at least once.
- 6:03Mm-hmm. Okay, okay. Yeah.
- 6:03It's like a it's a rule for me.
- 6:04And ~
- 6:07the latest time I went was actually just last summer.
- 6:09~ not the one that just happened,
- 6:11but twenty twenty five. ~
- 6:12Mm-hmm.
- 6:13~ I went to Disney and like me and do you remember Joseph Hole from Florida College?
- 6:18Yeah, yeah. So we of course you did.
- 6:19Yeah, I lived with him. Is he still down there?
- 6:22Right, right, right. So it I we I Yes,
- 6:23But do you remember him?
- 6:24Nah.
- 6:25do you remember him though? 'Cause
- 6:28it so what happened was we went on a little like Disney adventure together.
- 6:31We hit up some of the parks and we went to Magic Kingdom.
- 6:33We're on Haunted Mansion, loving it.
- 6:36~
- 6:37The ride breaks down in the Madame Leota room,
- 6:40so we're just stuck there in a dark void with a crystal head,
- 6:43just in in the middle
- 6:44Yeah.
- 6:44that's lovely.
- 6:44of it,
- 6:45and we're all just sitting there and I'm thinking,
- 6:46hmm. Interesting. This
- 6:49Yeah.
- 6:50it's like I don't know what this means,
- 6:51what the what the implications of this are,
- 6:53but I guess we'll just wait for the ghosts to let us all go or something.
- 6:57I don't know.
- 6:58I feel like it's a it's a stroke of luck or some it's just a nice thing
- 7:02to be stuck on your favorite ride at least once.
- 7:05I was th I mean, it's it's air conditioned,
- 7:07it's nice and dark, it was like it there
- 7:09That's true.
- 7:09there are worse places in Disney to get stuck in,
- 7:11I'll tell that much.
- 7:14Yeah. Man.
- 7:15What about you, Jeremy? Have have you ridden Haunted Mansion?
- 7:18I
- 7:19haven't been to Magic Kingdom since probably like eighth grade.
- 7:22I'm itching to get back there.
- 7:25~
- 7:26So but
- 7:26you don't remember if you did it before?
- 7:29no, I rode I rode Haunted Mansion then,
- 7:29Okay. All right.
- 7:31for sure.
- 7:32~ I was just scared out of my wits.
- 7:36Just kidding. I was not. It was great though.
- 7:38Yeah.
- 7:39There's some jump scares in there.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:41But No.
- 7:43Yeah, I
- 7:44I went on it for the first time this this summer of this year,
- 7:48twenty twenty six. So ~ th that was my first experience going on the ride.
- 7:54And I was a little bummed because they were like doing some like construction
- 7:58on the outside. So like the whole facade of the front,
- 8:01it just had like a like a big poster just like covering up like the whole
- 8:07the whole house and they were like doing there was scaffolding and stuff
- 8:08Wait, hold hold on a second.
- 8:08Work in progress.
- 8:10it was trying to hide and so
- 8:12Facade
- 8:13Yeah.
- 8:13you
- 8:13~ it's not a real haunted mansion?
- 8:16~ well, ~ there's some debates,
- 8:18That's what they built the park
- 8:18you know.
- 8:19around.
- 8:20It's a it's it's on an old
- 8:22Yeah.
- 8:22burial ground, Jonathan. This is the lore,
- 8:25okay? It's a real haunted mansion.
- 8:25Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 8:26Somehow
- 8:27somehow they found four different haunted mansions on Disney property
- 8:32Mm-hmm.
- 8:32before they built. ~ and they're scattered.
- 8:35That's how they decide where to open a park.
- 8:36Yep.
- 8:37Is like where
- 8:37Yeah, exactly.
- 8:38where is the Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 8:38They look for the most haunted places they can find.
- 8:40Those ghosts
- 8:41put on hundreds of shows a day for very little pay.
- 8:45I'll have you know.
- 8:47They're just they just they're in it for the love of the game.
- 8:51I will say the ride broke down while I was on it this year as well,
- 8:54so maybe it's it's got some age to it,
- 8:57That's just good luck. Maybe it's part of the ride and y'all just don't know.
- 8:57you know, but maybe. Yeah.
- 8:59You're like
- 9:00Maybe it's some
- 9:00sort of inside quotes curse and we're all part of it.
- 9:03Yeah.
- 9:04~
- 9:04Can't wait to I I'll let you know if I ever get on it and then I get stuck.
- 9:08Yeah, that it's your
- 9:09yeah, your decks you get on the broken down haunted mansion,
- 9:10Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:11right?
- 9:14Unless I'm the final one in the trio,
- 9:16then it just like breaks forever when I'm on
- 9:18man.
- 9:19it. I don't know how these curses work,
- 9:21Don't put that don't put that evil into the world.
- 9:22you know?
- 9:24I don't know why I can't I can't
- 9:25live in a world without the haunted mansion.
- 9:28Alright, caught it. Put it away.
- 9:30We're good.
- 9:30~ okay.
- 9:31Feel like Universal needs
- 9:32to do like the monster house version,
- 9:35you know? That would be pretty cool.
- 9:36D does do they own Monster House IP?
- 9:37Actually I d I don't think so.
- 9:39'Cause
- 9:41that would be incredible.
- 9:44it's Sony. Sony Pictures, Columbia
- 9:45Mm
- 9:46Pictures.
- 9:47~
- 9:51Mm.
- 9:53Always got that soundboard set up.
- 9:55Yeah. You've always got the wrong movies sound bites on the on the soundboard.
- 9:57No, that was for Monster House.
- 9:58Pre pre loaded, ready to go.
- 10:00Yeah.
- 10:01Yeah.
- 10:04Okay,
- 10:04well, I think we should get into some of the behind the scenes here for
- 10:08the ~ for the history of the attraction,
- 10:11if you guys will allow
- 10:11Alrighty.
- 10:12me a minute. I watched the Haunted Mansion episode of Behind
- 10:17the Attraction on Disney Plus.
- 10:18It's a whole documentary series about the whole history of the parks.
- 10:22It's pretty interesting. this is episode two of the first season,
- 10:26so it's a classic ride that they wanted to to cover.
- 10:31Some of the main takeaways I got from the history was they had the idea,
- 10:37Walt had the idea of some kind of haunted haunted house,
- 10:40haunted mansion that he wanted to institute.
- 10:42But he kind of like like some of these other rides,
- 10:46that's kinda all it was, you know.
- 10:48And then he he sends it off to his people,
- 10:50you know, his imagineers to like come up with some ideas.
- 10:53And so the episode kind of talked about how,
- 10:56~ they they never really could settle on like a tone.
- 11:01Like, is it c supposed to be scary?
- 11:03Is it supposed to be funny? You know,
- 11:05and and so he would kind of like work with one imagineer and say,
- 11:08Yeah, to like make it more scary.
- 11:09Then he'd work with another one and tell them like kind of working against each
- 11:13other al almost, like to to see how they how they would ~ you know,
- 11:17what they'd come up with. And ultimately,
- 11:20like it's a little bit of both.
- 11:21Like they just never picked. They just kinda made it a little bit scary,
- 11:24a little bit funny, a little bit just kind of weird.
- 11:26There's a lot of different imagineers that
- 11:31kinda had their put their their stamp on it.
- 11:34~ the other thing I thought was pretty interesting
- 11:39was they started building it and then ~ Jeremy and I talked about this
- 11:45on a previous episode. The the World's Fair in the sixties happened
- 11:49and Walt was like we're going all in on the World's Fair.
- 11:51And so all the the production
- 11:53Right.
- 11:53and development of rides at Disneyland was like placed on hold for a while,
- 11:58including the haunted mansion.
- 12:00And there was a period where they had had it built and it just
- 12:04sat abandoned for years. So it kind of created this like natural like curiosity
- 12:10about it. Like people are wondering,
- 12:12like, man, this this really is some like haunted,
- 12:13Already starting the lore. Woohoo.
- 12:14cursed place, you know? And it just sat there,
- 12:16A re a a bona fide abandoned mansion out there.
- 12:17you know. So Yeah.
- 12:20Hm.
- 12:22So just add to the spookiness of like the haunted,
- 12:24you know, aspect of it and the ghosts and things like that.
- 12:27So everyone was really
- 12:30sorry. Sorry to interrupt.
- 12:31Everyone was excited to ~
- 12:33What was that?
- 12:33to go on
- 12:34opening day.
- 12:37Was that you, Jeremy?
- 12:38Hey, whoever smelt it dealt it.
- 12:39some some other facts was Walt wanted the the mansion to be like pristine
- 12:45and clean on the outside because the parks are supposed to be clean
- 12:48and and inviting. So they wanted it to look good on the outside,
- 12:52but then on the inside is where they kind of made it like s more spooky
- 12:55and like falling apart and like,
- 12:57you know, decaying over time and things like that.
- 13:00But those were some of the main takeaways.
- 13:04Kinda the rest of the episode just kinda talked about the different versions
- 13:07of the ride in different parks and for the most part they're all the same,
- 13:13except for the one in Hong Kong,
- 13:15because
- 13:16Okay.
- 13:17I think they're they they don't like ghosts over there.
- 13:19So they changed the whole storyline.
- 13:21This yeah. Yeah.
- 13:21There's there's like huge like cultural taboo with just like dead stuff in general,
- 13:21Okay.
- 13:24Mm-hmm.
- 13:25so they just
- 13:26made it like a magic like a kind of like vaguely magic themed mansion instead.
- 13:30Yeah.
- 13:32It was like ma
- 13:32is it even called Haunted Mansion?
- 13:34No,
- 13:34it's like Mystic Manor or something.
- 13:37I'm not actually sure. Yeah.
- 13:37That's right, yeah. And it's all about like mysterious
- 13:38~ interesting.
- 13:40artifacts and things like that and I don't know how they Yeah.
- 13:44So that was kinda interesting.
- 13:45Okay. Sounds like they got
- 13:46How how they kind of have to adapt
- 13:47it.
- 13:48It's it's a good compromise, I think,
- 13:49like for the most part, yeah.
- 13:51Mm-hmm.
- 13:51Sounds like they can do a sequel with that.
- 13:55They could, yeah. Yeah.
- 13:57So they are this
- 13:58movie is based on the original three,
- 14:02I guess. Is there one in Paris?
- 14:05~ so there is one in Paris. It's an exact copy of the one in Disneyland.
- 14:09~
- 14:10okay.
- 14:10there are some slight differences between Disneyland and Disney World.
- 14:15The one in Disneyland is in New Orleans Square.
- 14:19And so that's why this movie takes place in Louisiana.
- 14:23They they mainly based
- 14:23Okay, that makes sense now.
- 14:25it off of that one, but then ~ the one in Disney World is in Liberty Square.
- 14:33So they kind of changed the look of the of the mansion and they even added
- 14:37on that that side room, that glass like solarium side
- 14:40Mm-hmm.
- 14:41area. So in the movie th it's kind of a hybrid of both.
- 14:44But for the most part it's supposed to be kind of in that like Louisiana ~ area.
- 14:51Yeah, and I noticed that where I I thought it's like it doesn't quite look like
- 14:54one version of it or the other.
- 14:55It's like a like a fusion between the two.
- 14:56Mhm. Yeah.
- 14:57Yeah.
- 14:59Which I kinda liked it, you know,
- 15:00they took the best pieces of all of it and put it together.
- 15:03but that's like as far as like my takeaways from the episode,
- 15:06that's kind of my like history of the attraction.
- 15:08So it's it's a long standing ~ Disney ride that's been there for decades.
- 15:14And it's one of those things that people don't really want them to change
- 15:17it up too much. They just wanna go.
- 15:19They wanna ride in their doom buggy,
- 15:21they wanna hear the the narrator,
- 15:23they wanna see the walls, you know,
- 15:25stretching at during the pre show.
- 15:26Mm.
- 15:27And ~ so
- 15:29You know, it's a good good time to and it Yeah,
- 15:31If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
- 15:32Except it sounds like it breaks all the time.
- 15:33Exactly.
- 15:33good way to get out of the heat.
- 15:34Yeah.
- 15:37~ I
- 15:39Not the parts that matter though.
- 15:41Mm-hmm.
- 15:41Right, right, right, right, right.
- 15:42As long as you're there, it doesn't it it doesn't have to work for you to love it.
- 15:46So ~ I in the movie I found a couple hidden Mickeys.
- 15:51I always put the hidden Mickeys in as a part of the the theme park section.
- 15:56~ I found my own hidden Mickey this time.
- 15:59I didn't have to look it up. One
- 16:00Hmm.
- 16:01of ~ was on the axe blade where it almost hits him in the face.
- 16:07And it's like cut into the axe blade.
- 16:09That's pretty
- 16:10wow.
- 16:10cool. And I was like half a second,
- 16:12I was like, is it I had to rewind.
- 16:14I was like, is that a hidden Mickey?
- 16:15Yeah.
- 16:16~
- 16:17Almost got killed by a hidden Mickey.
- 16:19almost. and then the other one where I I I didn't I just looked this one up,
- 16:23is when he's running from the flying instruments after speaking to Madame Leota.
- 16:28all the windows on the door are in the shape of Mickey.
- 16:33~
- 16:34Okay. Very nice.
- 16:35Yeah.
- 16:36And of course the ~ there's a lot of homages to lots of different things
- 16:41in the park in this movie. ~ one of ~ was I noticed the tiki room.
- 16:46That theme like Trader Sam's, I'm pretty sure is what it's called.
- 16:50~ that's what that whole bar was at the beginning,
- 16:54that tiki.
- 16:54I didn't put that together. Yeah.
- 16:56Okay.
- 16:57And then ~
- 16:58You gotta
- 16:58get a volcano while you're there.
- 17:00It's a real drink.
- 17:01Ha ha
- 17:01Okay.
- 17:02ha
- 17:02~
- 17:03and then of course the the barbershop quartet,
- 17:06the Dapper Dans, ~ they made a special appearance as the singing busts.
- 17:13Sure. Mm-hmm.
- 17:13So real actors right there. Real singers.
- 17:18~ but yeah.
- 17:22~ shall I do some quick facts and stats?
- 17:25Yeah.
- 17:26I think we can go for it.
- 17:27Alright, well this movie came out in two thousand and three,
- 17:30which was twenty-three years ago.
- 17:31It's the one hundred and ninety-first live action film produced by Disney,
- 17:36directed by Rob Minkoff, known for a little movie we like to call Lion King.
- 17:41Directed Stuart Little II and also Lion King Two,
- 17:46Simba's Pride.
- 17:48Okay.
- 17:49And we usually in the Disney animation world,
- 17:51especially in the nineties, we f tend to find that a director of a movie really gets
- 17:55his roots from being on the animation team.
- 17:58~ sort of like Gary Trousdale.
- 18:01Friend of the Pod. ~ and so
- 18:08I looked up his like animation credits and he had worked on like the Black Cauldron,
- 18:13the Great Mouse Detective, and The Little Mermaid.
- 18:16So
- 18:17~ okay.
- 18:18Various
- 18:19various versions. I think he was the supervising animator for
- 18:23the Great Mouse detective. He was just on the team for Black Cauldron.
- 18:26And then I'm pretty sure he was like the head honcho for Little Mermaid.
- 18:32So pretty cool. Pretty cool stuff.
- 18:35Just all lineup right there, yeah.
- 18:35Or no, he was a character
- 18:37he was a character animator for Little Mermaid.
- 18:39That's right. which was a book.
- 18:42And speaking of books
- 18:44Are you following along with us on our Inside Quotes Book Club?
- 18:46Episodes dropping every Thursday until Christmas Day,
- 18:49'cause we're reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone,
- 18:52and we'd
- 18:52Mm-hmm.
- 18:52love for you to do that. Because we love this book.
- 18:55And furthermore, if you are already following along,
- 18:57have you even joined our Discord so that you can discuss said book?
- 19:01Bryce did. He's there. Do that.
- 19:02Price joined.
- 19:04There right now.
- 19:04So you can talk to Bryce, basically.
- 19:07Bryce
- 19:08is gonna be online, ~ from
- 19:11eight AM to nine PM every single day.
- 19:13There's his office hours.
- 19:14~
- 19:15just weekdays. So just just chat up,
- 19:18let know. He'll be there. Okay.
- 19:21Sorry, I got possessed by
- 19:21Or if not, I I
- 19:24I got possessed by a ad read, my bad.
- 19:26I mean, if not, I mean I'll just wander around in your digital walls,
- 19:30you know, no big deal. I'll just be there.
- 19:31Yeah.
- 19:32He does that anyways.
- 19:35Alright, this movie is rated PG.
- 19:37It has a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of a whopping fourteen percent
- 19:42and an audience score of thirty-two percent.
- 19:45Whoa.
- 19:46So put those together, we still have less than fifty.
- 19:49~ the tagline on the post
- 19:49Mm-hmm. That's less than failing.
- 19:50Mm-hmm.
- 19:53Yeah.
- 19:53Yeah. The tagline on the poster,
- 19:56there's a bunch of them, but my favorite one was two bathrooms,
- 19:59his and hers.
- 20:04'Cause they're like real estate agents,
- 20:06get it?
- 20:06Yeah, they're
- 20:08This movie is hour and twenty eight minutes long,
- 20:11which is one minute shorter than the TV movie we just did,
- 20:14Tower of Terror. That doesn't make much sense.
- 20:15Interesting. Yeah.
- 20:18~ and this one is currently on Disney Plus as of this recording,
- 20:21so go check it out.
- 20:22And ~ and with that, I guess for those who haven't seen this movie,
- 20:26Jonathan, do you have a storyline for us?
- 20:28I do have
- 20:28a storyline. For those who haven't seen this yet,
- 20:32a realtor and his wife and children are summoned to a mansion,
- 20:36which they soon discover is haunted,
- 20:37and while they attempt to escape,
- 20:39he learns an important lesson about the family he has neglected.
- 20:43Hilarity ensues and
- 20:46Hilarity
- 20:46ensues.
- 20:47Hilarity ensues.
- 20:50A little spookiness.
- 20:52Here and there.
- 20:52In
- 20:52spoos.
- 20:54Mm-hmm.
- 20:54Shall we get started with this IQ test?
- 20:58We shall
- 20:58Let's do it.
- 20:59Alright.
- 21:02We have a test that meets our IQ standards.
- 21:04We have a series of binary and quantitative tests to help best categorize these
- 21:08movies as staples, stapleist, or just plain quacks.
- 21:11Movies must collect at least ten points,
- 21:15or seven points to become a staple,
- 21:17ten points to become stapleist,
- 21:19and if it makes six or less, it's a quack.
- 21:21But don't fret because we have a bonus round to soften the blow for
- 21:25the movies we really love.
- 21:27And with that, shall we get started with the first ever test?
- 21:30The quotable quotes test. Now guys,
- 21:34is this a quotable movie to you?
- 21:38Bryce, I'm I'm gonna throw it off to you for to start us out on this one.
- 21:42When you were driving around in the back of the van,
- 21:44Haunted Mansion was playing over and over again.
- 21:46What was that one line you just loved to quote?
- 21:49It wasn't
- 21:49so much a w one line as it was just every single song that the singing busts would
- 21:54Ha ha ha.
- 21:55sing
- 21:55Okay, okay.
- 21:56all
- 21:56the time, ~ to the degree where we were basically recreating the ~ the road trip
- 22:02at the very end of the film because of like how often we were just
- 22:05~ driving our parents crazy with the singing.
- 22:08~
- 22:09Yeah.
- 22:10So the
- 22:10Bridgman brothers were were the ~ the singing bus.
- 22:14~ yeah. Okay, okay.
- 22:14We we were the singing bus all along,
- 22:16it was us. That's exactly right.
- 22:17Wow.
- 22:17Halloween costume idea for next year or this year if you have time.
- 22:22We just we
- 22:22we w all we have to do is just remove our heads from our bodies and become black
- 22:26and white.
- 22:27Yeah.
- 22:28Or
- 22:28all you gotta do is just get a huge refrigerator cardboard box and spray paint it.
- 22:32Then that's like your base, your pedestal.
- 22:35Can you imagine just like four guys just walking around with like
- 22:38a table connecting all of them and you're like awkwardly trying to like navigate
- 22:42a neighborhood? That'd
- 22:44It's amazing.
- 22:45be great. aside from those, I mean I'm also pretty partial to like a few things,
- 22:48you know, like forever's and ever's.
- 22:51Like that's a good one.
- 22:52Mm-hmm.
- 22:53~ him just pretty much everything he says ~ to Madame Leoto when he's first meeting
- 22:58her, like, no dark spirits, no,
- 22:59no dark spirits, no? Like that
- 23:00Mm-hmm.
- 23:00kind of thing.
- 23:00Yeah.
- 23:01Yeah, those are great too.
- 23:03I don't wanna look
- 23:03within. I wanna look without. I liked that.
- 23:05Exactly. Yeah.
- 23:05Yeah. There's so many
- 23:08quotes from Eddie Murphy. He basically it's all improv,
- 23:12I'm sure. He's just like it's almost hard to keep up with him because he's saying
- 23:18so many things. That was kind of a a negative thing for me actually when
- 23:24I was trying to think of quotes as
- 23:25Mm-hmm.
- 23:26they were coming along. I like,
- 23:27That's a good quote. I couldn't remember as soon as he said it,
- 23:31but there was a lot that stuck
- 23:31Mm-hmm. Because it just kept on coming.
- 23:33out.
- 23:34They just kept on coming. ~
- 23:34Rapid fire.
- 23:37one of my favorite ones was Man,
- 23:39Bob Vila would have a field day with this place.
- 23:43All those home improvement fans out there would would know who Bob Feela
- 23:45Mm. He was the villain of that show.
- 23:47is for sure. He was. And he was a real person,
- 23:49Yeah.
- 23:52so. ~
- 23:52Yeah.
- 23:57I I had one of the quotes I remember,
- 23:59I I'm pretty sure it was in the trailer and it wasn't it's like it's kind of funny,
- 24:04but it's it's more of how he delivers the line.
- 24:07It's like, hey honey, they've got dead people in the backyard.
- 24:10Like the way he says backyard.
- 24:12In the backyard
- 24:12I
- 24:13just always thought that was funny as a kid.
- 24:18Yeah. ~
- 24:18Maybe like leave
- 24:19that out of like the when they're previewing it to people,
- 24:21Yeah.
- 24:21but yeah.
- 24:24Then he's like, we could have one heck of a weenie roast in this thing,
- 24:26huh?
- 24:27Mm-hmm.
- 24:29~ it's not exactly ~ quotable,
- 24:32but I did appreciate the performance that ~ Ramsley's actor gave like throughout
- 24:37the whole film where he he talks
- 24:39Yes.
- 24:39like this the whole time. Yeah.
- 24:41Mm-hmm.
- 24:42He's good at that. Yeah.
- 24:43Old ol old General Zod still had it,
- 24:45let me tell ya.
- 24:47Yes. Yes.
- 24:49And
- 24:49the voice of Jorel in ~ Smallville.
- 24:52It's another Superman
- 24:52Yeah.
- 24:53connection there. I I got to. T
- 24:53You always gotta bring up smallville connections,
- 24:55huh?
- 24:56it's the twenty fifth anniversary this year,
- 24:57you know? Yeah.
- 24:58my.
- 25:01Somebody saved me. ~
- 25:03Ha ha ha.
- 25:05okay, so another one was the way I see it,
- 25:08you only go around the track once and when you do it,
- 25:10you do it well.
- 25:15There was a couple of references to just like other movies 'cause like he's like
- 25:19Yeah.
- 25:20it's like Dad, I see dead people.
- 25:22Yeah.
- 25:23Yeah.
- 25:25And then Eddie
- 25:25Murphy ~ okay, what Jim Evers.
- 25:27I should should I call him Eddie Murphy or Jim Evers?
- 25:29Eddie Murphy's fine with me.
- 25:30I'm gonna go back and forth. Yeah.
- 25:30I was about to say l let's let's be honest with ourselves.
- 25:32Yeah. Eddie Murphy then. Then
- 25:32It it's it's Eddie Murphy. Eddie Eddie Murphy's playing himself.
- 25:34It is Eddie Murphy. Yeah.
- 25:35He's it's it's Eddie Murphy.
- 25:37he's like, ~ the butler did it.
- 25:39You gotta be kidding me.
- 25:41Yes, yes. ~ there's a reference to the Princess Bride,
- 25:45almost. W it just made me laugh so hard when ~ he said That's unspeakable.
- 25:51Unspeakable Even though it's Wallace Sean,
- 25:54When w Wallace Wallace Sean's character said that?
- 25:57yeah.
- 25:58Yeah, 'cause it's like it's like we all know what you want to say.
- 26:00You're not saying it, but we know what
- 26:01Yes.
- 26:02you're going to say.
- 26:04It made my pull out quote for the marquee for sure.
- 26:08Mostly 'cause it was one word.
- 26:10~ and then the kids had a couple of funny things to say.
- 26:14They were like, How should I know?
- 26:16I'm not the weatherman I was like,
- 26:18Wouldn't you like to know weather boy?
- 26:19Energy
- 26:21I I
- 26:22st I still use that to this day when someone like asks me a question
- 26:24Ha ha
- 26:25I I will respond wouldn't you like to know weatherboy?
- 26:28That's gotta
- 26:29be one of the best quotes from a from a meme.
- 26:35~ another one was ~ I don't like Latin.
- 26:38Just 'cause he was scared of it.
- 26:39Yeah.
- 26:39I don't know.
- 26:40Scared of everything.
- 26:40There
- 26:41there's a a part where the Master Gracie has he says to Eddie Murphy's wife,
- 26:46he's like, You have very beautiful children And then Eddie Murphy's like,
- 26:49Well I kicked in some chromosomes too,
- 26:51I kicked in some corposomes
- 26:51you know.
- 26:52too.
- 26:53I r
- 26:55~ man, dude yeah, no, this a lot a lot of stuff that flew over my head when
- 27:00I was a kid. ~ they they
- 27:02Yeah.
- 27:02really earned that PG rating with this movie,
- 27:04let me tell you. ~
- 27:05Yeah.
- 27:05I completely forgot that within the first three minutes of the film they show
- 27:10a guy hanging. That is crazy work.
- 27:13~ yeah, yeah.
- 27:13Yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 27:16I don't remember that at all. I cannot believe I forgot about that.
- 27:20Also just like skipping to the end,
- 27:22like this this movie has depictions of heaven and hell,
- 27:25Hell We saw a man fall into hell.
- 27:25like in the movie. Where yeah.
- 27:26Mm-hmm.
- 27:29Yeah.
- 27:31So and it's PG.
- 27:32A move that Disney hadn't
- 27:33pulled since Hunchback of Notre Dame.
- 27:36~ look, he's not really kissing your mom.
- 27:40That was so weird. Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:43What do you need? We're
- 27:44going to heaven. You can't take it with you.
- 27:48And then the heck I can't.
- 27:48That's another good one.
- 27:49The heck I can't. I
- 27:51the one thing I remember about this movie is that we watched this movie
- 27:55one time with mom and she like ooh,
- 27:57I do she did not like that line.
- 27:58She she was like upset about that.
- 28:00I don't blame her. I don't blame her,
- 28:01Right, because you can't really take stuff.
- 28:03but yeah.
- 28:06one of the lines that I feel like is a callback to the ride is when Wallace Sean's
- 28:10character is just like, Well, there's always my way
- 28:18Yeah.
- 28:20So I mean I I feel like this passes.
- 28:22I feel like there's plenty of quotes here.
- 28:23for sure. I had at least ten.
- 28:24Yeah.
- 28:25Yeah.
- 28:26They're a lot they're kinda hard to find,
- 28:28but, you know, they were great.
- 28:29Nothing takes twenty minutes, but this segment did.
- 28:29We we scrounged up. Yeah.
- 28:33Yeah.
- 28:35It's like we we we've scrounged up a few there.
- 28:37I was actually pretty impressed with that.
- 28:39Well, let's just go ahead and pass that one then.
- 28:41Okay.
- 28:42Ding dung. Our next category is the Magnificent Music Test.
- 28:47~ can you name or identify the sound or the theme by heart?
- 28:52Or it does it have just great written songs,
- 28:56you know? What kind of iconic music is associated with this
- 29:00Bryce already talked about it.
- 29:01let me just say, I don't think the score is all that great.
- 29:04It's just kinda generic. But Grim Grinning Ghost is a is a bop,
- 29:07I I Yeah.
- 29:09you know?
- 29:09yeah, absolutely.
- 29:11I I actually thought that the music was was very good.
- 29:14I I I see
- 29:15my
- 29:15what you're saying with it, but I feel like it is very reminiscent of the ride and
- 29:21Yep.
- 29:21I felt like it was higher quality than even this movie is sometimes.
- 29:26~
- 29:27Okay.
- 29:28the composer Yeah.
- 29:28You thought the you thought the music was too good for the movie,
- 29:31some parts.
- 29:33~ the composer was Mark Mancina.
- 29:37Okay.
- 29:38~ you will know him from some of his his work on Disney films.
- 29:42As a collaborator with Phil Collins on Brother Bear and Tarzan,
- 29:46he worked with him to do the score.
- 29:47Automatic pass. Automatic pass.
- 29:49he also worked
- 29:50on Lion King, I believe. ~
- 29:53Okay.
- 29:54but you know, I could see how I I feel like the music is really good music
- 29:58you could just like throw on. If you were like having a Halloween party
- 30:01Halloween party. Okay.
- 30:01or you had your own
- 30:02ha haunted house, you could just play the soundtrack to this and
- 30:05Okay.
- 30:05it would be perfect,
- 30:06you know.
- 30:07And you know what? You make a good point.
- 30:10my original thought was like, it's kinda generic like Halloween haunted house music.
- 30:15But that's literally what the movie is about.
- 30:19Yeah.
- 30:20So like this is the one time where something generic should work.
- 30:23Mm-hmm.
- 30:24Yeah, it's nothing that gets stuck in your head,
- 30:26but it has this i i it carries this sort of like whimsical ~ sense of adventure
- 30:31Yeah.
- 30:31to it. Like it gets dark when it needs to get dark,
- 30:33it ~ it it just scores the whole film like pretty decently.
- 30:37~ I will say again, if for anything that does get stuck in your head,
- 30:41~ same as the quotes, the the singing busts are carrying a little bit here,
- 30:45'cause it's like every single thing that they sing.
- 30:48I would say they
- 30:48make up about twenty five percent of our love for this movie.
- 30:51Probably and I and you just
- 30:54Ha ha.
- 30:54know that that sequence like drove the parents crazy,
- 30:57but I I
- 30:57Yes.
- 30:58I can't help it, man. I d I I like the singing bust.
- 31:01It's a cool effect on the ride,
- 31:02it's a fun scene in the film. I I I can't I can't help it.
- 31:03Yeah. Huh? Yeah.
- 31:03Yeah. Yeah,
- 31:06I'm I'm with ya.
- 31:06We've
- 31:07got ~ a medley of down by the old mill stream,
- 31:12by the light of the silvery moon,
- 31:14she'll be comin' round the mountain,
- 31:15Yep. Yes.
- 31:16by the beautiful
- 31:18sea. I left my heart in San Francisco
- 31:21No, you left your key in the mausoleum.
- 31:25Ha ha.
- 31:25W
- 31:25when the Saints go marching in,
- 31:27they they just kept
- 31:29Yeah.
- 31:29going during that scene. I I thought that was pretty funny.
- 31:32Just responded to everything.
- 31:32That was good. It was cutting off and everything.
- 31:35one other call out for music I would like to point out is Wallace Sean's character,
- 31:41his organ playing during the wedding march,
- 31:43that was pretty awesome. 'Cause
- 31:46Yeah.
- 31:47it was creepy and iconic. It was like I don't know,
- 31:52dissonant? Is that how you say that?
- 31:56I guess kind of, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:57It wasn't it was like poorly done.
- 31:57I think it's a d dissonance a good word,
- 31:59yeah.
- 31:59It was poorly played,
- 31:59Mm hmm. Yes, yeah.
- 32:03but it also was it clashed with each other.
- 32:05Yeah. It gave it an ominous sound to it.
- 32:05So it was like a creepy version of the wedding march.
- 32:05Yeah.
- 32:07Yes. Yes. So I thought that was funny.
- 32:08Yeah. ~
- 32:10D the discordant, one might even say.
- 32:13Yes.
- 32:13I
- 32:14I thought you were gonna call out the Nelly song in the in credits that samples
- 32:18the People's Court theme.
- 32:21We don't talk about that, Jonathan.
- 32:25I just was listening to it and I was like,
- 32:27that sounds like the people's court.
- 32:28Da ding.
- 32:29And then I looked
- 32:30it up and I was like, yep, that's that's what that is.
- 32:32That's crazy. Okay.
- 32:32~
- 32:33Lo lo and behold, there it is.
- 32:35another thing I saw ~ music-wise is apparently Raven Simone
- 32:41did a cover of Stevie Wonder's Superstition for the movie,
- 32:46but it is not featured in the movie.
- 32:48But it was something
- 32:49Okay. Is it like a Disney
- 32:51channel promotion?
- 32:52Yeah, they did like a music
- 32:53video and it would like it aired as promotion during the during that time
- 32:58on Disney Channel and they're like in the haunted mansion.
- 33:00Like and it's like
- 33:01Okay.
- 33:02her singing, there's background dancers.
- 33:04They're like in different rooms of the mansion.
- 33:04That is
- 33:06that's so raven. I I
- 33:08gotta give that a listen because superstition is ~ love that song,
- 33:11listen to it every year. It's a great song.
- 33:13Yeah.
- 33:14Like I saw that listed
- 33:14Yeah. It's a good one.
- 33:15on the IMDV music and I like, Well,
- 33:17I didn't hear this in the movie.
- 33:18I felt like it was mostly the score,
- 33:19Yeah, we would have Would it be on the special features,
- 33:19Yeah, where is that?
- 33:20so yeah. So I looked it up.
- 33:23perchance?
- 33:25It could be. I don't know. Hmm.
- 33:27The D V D menus
- 33:27It better be. Yes.
- 33:29I looked it up
- 33:30on YouTube, so
- 33:32Yeah. Okay.
- 33:33~
- 33:33but overall I think I think it's worthy of the point.
- 33:36Simply I I feel like the
- 33:37Yeah, me too.
- 33:38score is good and then with the you know,
- 33:40the singing bus I it takes it over the top for sure.
- 33:45Alright,
- 33:45let's pass that. I was kinda worried about the the score there,
- 33:49but but you really changed my mind.
- 33:52Okay.
- 33:52Okay, so the go ahead.
- 33:54I I was gonna say that was one thing that Kelsey really appreciated
- 33:57too about the about the movie.
- 33:59Was that the ~ that she liked the music a lot and there was more references
- 34:04to the ride than she remembered,
- 34:06were kinda a couple of the big takeaways.
- 34:08Yeah.
- 34:09Alright. Well our next test, Jonathan,
- 34:11if you want to take it over.
- 34:14The next test is the story test.
- 34:16This is where we talk about the story,
- 34:18what works, what didn't. from page to screen,
- 34:21is the script a masterpiece or was a second draft needed?
- 34:25So what what do you
- 34:27Hm.
- 34:27guys think about the the story ~ of this movie?
- 34:31Basically you've got a real estate ~ agent couple that
- 34:37are very overworked and they get called to to this haunted mansion.
- 34:44to t for a tour. Well, both of them don't.
- 34:47The wife gets called, so immediately there's a red flag there.
- 34:49Like, don't bring anyone else.
- 34:52Come alone.
- 34:53But yeah. They come in, they think they're there to like see if they want
- 34:58to sell it, but the the owner has other devious plans at work,
- 35:03you know.
- 35:05Yeah. The only reason the ~ they knew to call
- 35:10her was because somebody some little paper kid ~ was on
- 35:15his route and dropped a whole stack of flyers with their faces on them.
- 35:19Of flyers, yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 35:22He he done got spooked by that two thousand three CGI.
- 35:26Yeah.
- 35:26y I I gotta give the movie credit for like for what it is worth,
- 35:30the it it uses that hour twenty-eight minutes.
- 35:32It it's surprisingly well paced.
- 35:34I I didn't remember it like moving along as well as it did,
- 35:37but like the I I wasn't bored.
- 35:39I was not bored while I was watching it.
- 35:40Yeah.
- 35:40Yeah.
- 35:43I I kinda disagree. I I thought the pacing was a little off on this one.
- 35:47I
- 35:48Well I agree. You
- 35:50W
- 35:50w you ag y you agree with him or
- 35:50know why? Because it feels like
- 35:52me? Yeah.
- 35:53Who do you who do you agree with,
- 35:54Jeremy?
- 35:54No, I agree
- 35:55with Bryce because you know what?
- 35:56Okay.
- 35:57There's some slow parts, but all that means is that the ride got broken down.
- 36:02Yeah.
- 36:03Yeah.
- 36:04You're supposed to be stuck in this house.
- 36:06You're supposed
- 36:06Okay.
- 36:07to get that feeling of ~ no, how do I get out of this?
- 36:10Even if it's
- 36:10I think we're the
- 36:11hitting the pause button.
- 36:13I think where the pacing bothered me a little bit was the Eddie Murphy storyline,
- 36:18yes, was it kept going from one thing to the next,
- 36:21fairly rapid paced. But then like the B story,
- 36:25so to speak, was like his wife seemed like she was slowly walking around
- 36:29the the mansion with this creepy dude for like a solid hour of the movie.
- 36:34And she did not get the hint, like Yes.
- 36:34Th she was she she was a very patient listener.
- 36:35Yeah.
- 36:38She
- 36:39Yeah.
- 36:39she really
- 36:40wanted to hear that story.
- 36:41It just
- 36:42like you get piecemeal, you get a little bit more,
- 36:45a little bit more, you know, every
- 36:47Bit by bit.
- 36:47time they cut back. But yeah. I mean I did appreciate that it was just you know,
- 36:52just under ninety minutes. Like I I feel like it didn't it did what it wanted
- 36:55to do and it didn't stay too long.
- 36:57But yeah, there w there was some like pacing stuff for me anyway with the story.
- 37:02Yeah.
- 37:02okay, I've got a couple other notes here about the story.
- 37:05there's a whole like side story too with the son being like scared of spiders
- 37:09and so that kind of pays off
- 37:09Yeah.
- 37:10later. He's gotta face his fears.
- 37:11It's very predictable.
- 37:12Relatable.
- 37:13~
- 37:14Yeah.
- 37:15I also thought that rolling up a magazine to like try and kill a spider
- 37:20is a very inefficient way of killing a spider.
- 37:22I don't know. What what are your methods
- 37:23It's yeah.
- 37:24of trying to kill a spider? I'm kind of a smother kind of person.
- 37:28Like I get a paper towel and I just smother it to death.
- 37:28Smother?
- 37:30Mm.
- 37:31What is your what is your ~ your technique?
- 37:35I used a croc yesterday.
- 37:37Okay,
- 37:37okay. That's a little bit wider surface.
- 37:40I feel like you could, you know,
- 37:41give it a good hit. Than like a rolled up magazine.
- 37:41Yeah. And it's bouncy, so it's like in good impact.
- 37:44Yeah.
- 37:45I don't know, rolled out magazine is pretty solid,
- 37:47but I feel like you don't
- 37:47Yeah, but you gotta throw away the magazine.
- 37:49You can't clean that off.
- 37:50It's it's a waste of a perfectly good sports illustrated swimsuit edition.
- 37:53Yeah.
- 37:54Yeah, are you trying to keep that?
- 37:57It's very valuable. That was crazy.
- 37:59Okay, well that we can throw away.
- 38:00That was like that's crazy for a kid's movie.
- 38:01Yeah.
- 38:03I'm I'm completely I relate to the sun in that regard.
- 38:07I ever tell you guys that story?
- 38:08It's like when I was a little kid,
- 38:09I I used to think spiders are really cool,
- 38:11and then I saw the that scene in Spider-Man 1 where the CG spider like sinks
- 38:16its fangs into Peter
- 38:16Yeah.
- 38:17Parker, and I was like, I was like,
- 38:19they do that?
- 38:20Look
- 38:20at the ~
- 38:20They bite.
- 38:21I like, they they bite people and I got so scared
- 38:23They fly now? They fly now.
- 38:24and ever since then Yeah, they fly now And I got really scared and ever
- 38:28since then I've been scared of spiders because of a
- 38:30~
- 38:30Well.
- 38:31weird two thousand one CG spider.
- 38:37If you're gonna be scared of any spider,
- 38:38that's a pretty cool looking one to be scared of anyways.
- 38:40The radio the radioactive one.
- 38:40So yes.
- 38:41Yeah.
- 38:41See See that that movie
- 38:43freaked Jeremy out too, but it was more whenever it it did the zoom
- 38:47in on the fingerprint and you got like the little like spider spiky claws coming
- 38:51~ yeah.
- 38:51~ Yeah, that freaked me out.
- 38:52out, you know. That bothered him.
- 38:56For sure.
- 38:57Okay,
- 38:58the other thing I thought as far as the story goes is so the mansion wants
- 39:03to lu lure this woman to the mansion because he wants to marry her because
- 39:07he thinks that she's been reincarnated of the the woman that ~ that
- 39:13he loved that died in the prologue.
- 39:15Okay, so what are Ghost's views on marriage?
- 39:18Because I kept thinking like she's already married.
- 39:21What's what's the deal here? Is it she can just marry this other guy too?
- 39:26How d how does this work, you know?
- 39:28there was never a plot to kill Eddie Murphy's character though.
- 39:31They just like locked him out.
- 39:32Like I thought
- 39:33Right.
- 39:34they w I felt like that was a missing piece of the story.
- 39:36Like they should have like tried to kill him or something like that,
- 39:39you know? I don't know.
- 39:39Yeah, but he's dead
- 39:40already, so I guess
- 39:42I guess, yeah. Or were they trying to kill her and then like she joins
- 39:47him in the afterlife, you know?
- 39:49That that's what I was thinking,
- 39:50I don't understand.
- 39:50because you know,
- 39:51till death do you part and all that,
- 39:53so I mean i I mean it makes sense.
- 39:53Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 39:58I'm
- 39:58not so sure. I mean, I feel like that's kind of just a a blurry
- 40:04They just weren't concerned about the the ramifications.
- 40:05concept. Like I don't think they cared but also it's just like
- 40:10it the she was like reincarnated into this person
- 40:16so like however how old she is,
- 40:18I don't know how old this this ghost is,
- 40:21but
- 40:22But she wasn't actually, though,
- 40:24right? They just thought she was.
- 40:28I don't I don't know anymore.
- 40:28Just a a really identical
- 40:30See, this is where I was getting confused
- 40:32stranger.
- 40:33with the mummy franchise because I feel like the first
- 40:35Hm, mm, mm.
- 40:36mummy, like the the emotev, you know,
- 40:39wants to sacrifice her and bring back ~ his love.
- 40:42And then in the second one, you find out like she is the reincarnated person
- 40:47of his love or something like that,
- 40:49you know, so I just I kept getting the mummy vibes from this movie.
- 40:52Which that opens up a whole another can of worms because it's like
- 40:55if you're the reincarnation of somebody,
- 40:57how does that person also exist as like a spirit or a mummy or whatever is?
- 41:02If you're reincarnated, you're the same you're the same soul,
- 41:04Yeah.
- 41:04Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 41:06you're
- 41:06just in a new body down the road.
- 41:08That doesn't make sense. So it's
- 41:09Mm-hmm.
- 41:10it's like I I d I don't know how that works.
- 41:13And and you think they would because this comes up so often in
- 41:16Yeah.
- 41:20horror films.
- 41:21Yeah.
- 41:21Yeah.
- 41:22Yeah.
- 41:23Maybe this is a fail for the story test.
- 41:25Well, I
- 41:26I just had some some questions,
- 41:28that's all. So look, there's three of us here.
- 41:30So I'm gonna vote no, but if the other two if you two vote yes,
- 41:35then I'll defer to the guest on this one.
- 41:40You know, I'm gonna say I've been I've been really nice to the movie so far,
- 41:43but
- 41:44I also have to give criticism where it's due,
- 41:47and it definitely it definitely feels like a lot of things in this movie just happen
- 41:54for the sake of it. Like it it sort of is turning its wheels.
- 41:58I mean the even the premise in and of itself,
- 41:59like family man who's too busy for his family.
- 42:02It's we we've seen these tropes before,
- 42:04you know, been there, done that.
- 42:06Yeah.
- 42:06And what makes this so egregious is that this is this is like hot off
- 42:11the heels of Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 42:12It would amazing movies.
- 42:14Yeah.
- 42:14You took a
- 42:15Great writing.
- 42:16took a ride I didn't care about and then turned it into like a a a film,
- 42:20~ which also leads
- 42:21Yeah.
- 42:23to more questions because when you think about it,
- 42:25they added Jack Sparrow into the ride after the movie did so well.
- 42:29If
- 42:29Mm-hmm.
- 42:29this movie did well, would they have added Eddie Murphy to the haunted mansion?
- 42:33Whoa.
- 42:34Is the question.
- 42:36Yeah, possibly. Yeah.
- 42:37Yeah. But
- 42:39yeah, no, I'm gonna I'm also I'm I'm with you on this one,
- 42:41Johnny. I I'd say that it's just kinda story ~ n not a strong suit.
- 42:46You you could do anything Yeah,
- 42:46Objectively I think we can say yeah.
- 42:48Okay. Okay.
- 42:49you you
- 42:50you could do anything with the premise.
- 42:51It's haunted mansion and it's just kind
- 42:52Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 42:53of whatever.
- 42:56Have
- 42:56y'all seen the newer ones?
- 42:57Okay.
- 42:59I have not seen the newest live action.
- 43:00I wonder if the story changes in that.
- 43:01Yeah.
- 43:04I think it's a yeah, it's it's a kind of a different premise,
- 43:06I feel like.
- 43:07Okay.
- 43:08Well, if that's the case, I'm hopeful,
- 43:11but I think we're all three somewhat in agreement that this can be a fail.
- 43:17So I'm gonna go ahead and do that.
- 43:20~ I I like that word agreance there,
- 43:23Agreance. Is that a real word?
- 43:23Jeremy. Yeah.
- 43:25I don't think so, but I I make up words too.
- 43:29I I'm no better.
- 43:30Is agreance
- 43:32a word? Yes, agreance is a real word,
- 43:36though it is considered archaic,
- 43:38obsolete, or non standard in modern English.
- 43:41okay.
- 43:41I just be reading books like that,
- 43:43you know?
- 43:44Yeah, he easy
- 43:44You do. 'Cause Inside Coats
- 43:45Book Club.
- 43:47Right, right, right, right. It's
- 43:48They don't call
- 43:48him Learned Jeremy for nothing.
- 43:53We we read a lot of books at like,
- 43:53They haven't called me that in a long time.
- 43:54you know, like at a fourth grade reading
- 43:55Yeah, I know. They they call you that for nothing.
- 43:56level, you know, so yeah. We're doing pretty good here.
- 43:58Yeah. I I'd
- 43:59Yeah.
- 44:01even I would even bet that the word agreent shows up at least once
- 44:05in the entire series. I'll bet you a dollar.
- 44:07I don't know. It's probably not.
- 44:09Okay. I'll take that bet.
- 44:10It's probably hard to find.
- 44:12No, never mind. Maybe in Pride and Prejudice.
- 44:16The
- 44:16stakes are too high. I I can't participate in this.
- 44:18Like a whole dollar? No. Mm-mm.
- 44:19~
- 44:20Yeah. Because of that,
- 44:22I'm out. All right, next
- 44:23Alright, well, whatever.
- 44:25test.
- 44:26Our next test is the acting test.
- 44:29So, we like to do this as like Robin Williams versus the Rock in a kid's movie.
- 44:36You know it's Robin Williams, but he bleeds himself into every single character.
- 44:41It's so well done. And then The Rock is the Rock in every movie he's in.
- 44:48So he sinks to the bottom. ~ so yeah,
- 44:53I I feel like in this particular leading man,
- 44:57Eddie Murphy is doing Eddie Murphy in prime Eddie Murphy comedy era.
- 45:02Everybody wanted him, obviously.
- 45:09But is he just he's pretty much playing himself?
- 45:12I don't know if is that like a is that a good
- 45:16No, I mean it's it's what we said earlier.
- 45:16Yeah.
- 45:17or a bad thing?
- 45:17It's i I mean i i for trying to sell me on like this individual character,
- 45:24like not really, but it I also I I don't hate Eddie Murphy,
- 45:29so i I I
- 45:30Yeah.
- 45:30don't know if it's a point against it that he's just playing himself.
- 45:33~ I I will say I think for the most part,
- 45:35~ I I thought the movie's casting was actually pretty fantastic.
- 45:39I thought everybody did
- 45:39Yeah.
- 45:40a good job with the rules that they were given.
- 45:42~ the only one that I thought was maybe like a little little
- 45:46questionable was the casting for Madame Leota,
- 45:49but ~ I
- 45:49Yeah.
- 45:50have I I have a huge crush on Jennifer Tilly,
- 45:52so I'm just not going to even bother with that.
- 45:54~ I'm just gonna leave
- 45:55Okay.
- 45:55that alone.
- 45:57Alright. ~ I one thing that makes me a little
- 46:02bit mad is Eddie Murphy's attitude about this movie.
- 46:07He's quoted as saying that this movie is not good and he is not a fan of it.
- 46:13And you could obviously
- 46:15Yeah.
- 46:16if it's not good, I feel like Eddie Murphy just is better than everybody.
- 46:21He thinks he is. And I think
- 46:25He was offered a cameo in the twenty twenty two version or whatever,
- 46:29the new one that came out, and he declined it because they didn't
- 46:32pay him enough money. So just like
- 46:34man.
- 46:34kinda like come on, man.
- 46:36Yeah. I mean
- 46:37You're well loved,
- 46:37Yeah.
- 46:38obviously it from Shrek, but come
- 46:42I mean,
- 46:42on.
- 46:43to be fair, th this movie didn't really,
- 46:45you know, become a thing, you know,
- 46:48after it came out. It kind of like came out it
- 46:50Yeah.
- 46:50did okay at the box office, but like critics didn't really like it.
- 46:54You know, it wasn't like it's it's definitely not anybody's favorite dardom,
- 46:59~ on the list, you know.
- 47:00Right, that's true. And it's not objectively the best dardom.
- 47:03You know, and it just didn't pay him,
- 47:05you know, the kind of residuals that the Shrek franchise,
- 47:07you know, as the dividends that he's received from that,
- 47:09you know, so I
- 47:10Yeah.
- 47:11don't know.
- 47:11I don't know, it just I it just felt cocky.
- 47:11But I I d I didn't think
- 47:14it was yeah, I I get that. I I didn't really think any of
- 47:18the family characters acting was like ~ particularly good.
- 47:23I liked Ramsley, I liked Terrence Stamp,
- 47:24I thought he did good.
- 47:25Yep.
- 47:26I liked
- 47:26Mm-hmm.
- 47:26the the staff, Wallace Sean and
- 47:29~ Dina Spybee is her name.
- 47:34Yeah. I liked her a lot.
- 47:34~
- 47:36that kind of duo I thought they were pretty good.
- 47:39I would even say Wallace Sean is playing himself in this movie.
- 47:42I feel like people didn't have to try hard,
- 47:42Well that's true, yeah. That's true.
- 47:42Yeah, yeah.
- 47:44I guess, but you know.
- 47:45It's true. Yeah.
- 47:46Ed Eddie Murphy and Wallace
- 47:47Sean are just like those kinds of actors where it's like the
- 47:49the character that they're putting on is just timeless.
- 47:52It it's always gonna work. Just go ahead and just be Yeah,
- 47:54They don't really know if the camera's rolling or not.
- 47:56it's it's it's like it's like ~ Jack Black.
- 47:58It's like yeah, just you just be you.
- 48:00Yeah. It's true.
- 48:00It it it'll work. Yeah.
- 48:03Yeah.
- 48:03I
- 48:04I'm willing to to give this one a a zero on this ~ this test here.
- 48:08I think I'm with ya. I'm with
- 48:10ya on that. one
- 48:12Not groundbreaking acting.
- 48:13one side thing is originally Don Knotts was cast as the groundskeeper seen
- 48:19at the entrance in the cemetery in the ride.
- 48:20~ Hm. Yeah.
- 48:22Er like in the like in the ride.
- 48:24~
- 48:25Mm-hmm.
- 48:25the character was a living resident of the mansion and he's the only
- 48:29one who subtly warns the Evers about the dangers of the place.
- 48:32I feel like that would be awesome to have Don Knotts as that character.
- 48:37Because we know him from another haunted house movie,
- 48:40The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. Certified Hood classic.
- 48:42That's good one. man. I always I
- 48:44Dude, one of my favorite Halloween
- 48:44Mm-hmm.
- 48:47movies.
- 48:48I keep forgetting about that as a Halloween like potential movie to pick.
- 48:52Yeah. Maybe next year. Attaboy Luther.
- 48:52Yeah. Maybe. Hada boy,
- 48:54There's so many.
- 48:56Luther. That's fun.
- 48:56Have you seen that one, Bryce?
- 48:59No, I actually haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet.
- 49:01And
- 49:02It's a classic.
- 49:04on the list it goes.
- 49:08Yeah, so yeah, let's
- 49:08All right. Next, Jeremy.
- 49:10give that a little fail. Yeah,
- 49:13we'll do that.
- 49:14Okay,
- 49:15the next test we are going to go over is the characters test.
- 49:18we have a vast array of types of characters like the hero,
- 49:23the villain, side characters, any like supporting or minor characters.
- 49:28are there any cameos? Are there any scene stealers or dynamic duos?
- 49:33~ so I guess we'll start with our protagonist,
- 49:39the Eddie Murphy, Jim Evers.
- 49:43I guess this is more story, but I love the idea of having the protagonists
- 49:47be real estate agents that are interested in the house.
- 49:52A lot of it's just like kids that are trick or treating wanna go find
- 49:56the the haunted house and like see what's up.
- 49:59Like 'cause there was a dare.
- 49:59Yeah, or
- 50:00yeah, i I mean they could have just as easily made it ~ you inherited
- 50:04the house from an uncle you didn't know you had or something,
- 50:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:06so I'll
- 50:07I'll at least give them props there.
- 50:08It's like a little interesting to have a a real estate agent go to a haunted house.
- 50:12It's it's kind of fun.
- 50:14Yeah. And he's obsessed with work and they can't pass up a good lead,
- 50:18you know. So I think it's cool.
- 50:20He's job obsessed. He's gotta learn that family is more important and maybe
- 50:22Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:24ghosts are to help show that,
- 50:28you know. Scare him out of his mind.
- 50:28Yeah.
- 50:31P appreciate the life that you have because you could lose it at any moment or
- 50:37Yeah. I he I don't know,
- 50:40he's not a strong hero for me.
- 50:44But he's compelling.
- 50:46Yeah.
- 50:47~ he's funny.
- 50:49No, I I mean I I I think he's the the hero.
- 50:52I mean, I know we talked about it being kind of a cliche trope about like
- 50:55the workaholic dad, you know, but ~
- 50:57Yeah.
- 50:59but I thought the concept of the real estate agents was funny and just like
- 51:02the name Evers and Evers
- 51:04Yeah.
- 51:04was was a funny pun kind of thing.
- 51:06~ and he does kind of he's always I don't know,
- 51:13he he tackles everything head on,
- 51:15you know, as he's there and
- 51:17He's kind of just like over ambitious is kind of his problem.
- 51:20Yeah.
- 51:20It's
- 51:20just like he you know, everything is like twenty minutes tops,
- 51:24you know, like we'll go we'll have one drink,
- 51:25you know, we're just well we're gonna have dinner with him,
- 51:26Yeah, yeah.
- 51:28you know, we'll just have some soup and then we'll leave,
- 51:29you know. But so it's
- 51:31also his downfall. But yeah, I I feel like it's you know,
- 51:35it's worth ~ it's worth a good character ~ point there.
- 51:39~ as far as the the villain, we'd have to give that to Ramsley,
- 51:44I feel like. Yeah.
- 51:44absolutely.
- 51:46Ramsley's the goat. Creepy he's so creepy,
- 51:47One of the better parts of the movie,
- 51:48characters. Mm-hmm.
- 51:50yet
- 51:51you could also I mean I guess the actor,
- 51:53you could see him like watching football on Thanksgiving.
- 51:55But
- 51:56Yeah.
- 51:59I don't know, yeah, he's very creepy.
- 52:00let's go for the supporting characters.
- 52:02I would I put that as the wife and the kids.
- 52:05I did too, yeah.
- 52:07I like their little side story of he's scared of spiders and he conquers his fear.
- 52:11This whole movie you just gotta buy into the cliches.
- 52:14Like the characters are
- 52:14Yeah, definitely.
- 52:16gonna be very cliche, but this whole movie is about a haunted house.
- 52:20Like everything has to be a little campy,
- 52:22you know.
- 52:22It might it might
- 52:23be going against what I said a tiny bit,
- 52:25but no no no, I I I'll say this that I I don't have anything wrong with cliches
- 52:29in particular, as long as it's done well,
- 52:31i is my thing. It's like
- 52:32Yeah, yeah.
- 52:32Yeah.
- 52:33as long 'cause it's I don't know,
- 52:34nothing new under the sun. You you have every trope imaginable.
- 52:38I mean ~ anything original these days is like pretty hard to come by.
- 52:42So as long as you're delivering something
- 52:43True.
- 52:44~ compelling and i you can have the most cliche ~ trite plot possible,
- 52:49but I mean if if the directing is good,
- 52:51if the acting is good
- 52:52I'm I'm not gonna complain about it,
- 52:54you know? Yeah.
- 52:54Yeah. No, I'm I'm with
- 52:55Yeah, yeah.
- 52:56you there. Yeah.
- 52:58But does this
- 52:58All right.
- 52:59movie do that?
- 53:00Sure,
- 53:01sure, sure.
- 53:02I don't know. the minor characters we've
- 53:05got ~ Wallace Sean.
- 53:09A gaggle of grim grinning ghosts,
- 53:10yeah.
- 53:11I was gonna put them for the scene stealers actually.
- 53:14okay. I
- 53:16Or the the singing busts.
- 53:18I forgot about that. See what I did for the minor character was Madame Leoda and
- 53:23Okay.
- 53:24and then the scene stealer I put Ezra and Emma,
- 53:27the the mansion staff. 'Cause I I I really liked them.
- 53:28Okay. Okay. Well
- 53:30But the singing bust too. Yeah.
- 53:33you could put them as dynamic duo.
- 53:35Okay, okay. There we go.
- 53:38Sounds
- 53:38like we've ~ sort of filled out every single
- 53:41Yeah, I think so. E even if the story
- 53:43So I guess this passes.
- 53:44Yeah, I mean
- 53:45wasn't like that great and the acting wasn't great,
- 53:47I th I think we still
- 53:48Characters are fun.
- 53:49we still appreciate the characters.
- 53:51give that a pass.
- 53:52Sounds good.
- 53:54Okay,
- 53:55so one of my favorite ones is the set design test.
- 54:01does the set design blow your mind?
- 54:03Is it based on anything? Do they have any iconic film locations?
- 54:07~ obviously, yeah.
- 54:10With a with something
- 54:10Yeah.
- 54:11like called the Haunted Mansion you have to have a good set.
- 54:14It's almost like a given.
- 54:17I don't hmm. ~
- 54:20Yeah.
- 54:21Ha ha
- 54:21ha.
- 54:22No, ~ I I will not complain about the the scenery.
- 54:25I I thought everything was really good.
- 54:27It it I mean there are
- 54:28Yeah.
- 54:28like a lot of there are a lot of moments in the film where you're kinda you're
- 54:30watching and you're thinking, I remember that.
- 54:33I was there. You
- 54:34Yeah.
- 54:34know, that kind of thing. Maybe a little different,
- 54:36but ~ for the most part, like the set design was great.
- 54:39shout out the one scene with the ~ the secret passageway that opened
- 54:43and closed when he would like to put the bus' head up and down.
- 54:44Dude, yes.
- 54:45Mm-hmm.
- 54:45yeah, like, you know, cliches,
- 54:47but sometimes they're cliches for a reason.
- 54:49That's what we're here for.
- 54:50Yeah, you ca yeah I mean you can't beat that.
- 54:52They're so good.
- 54:52Like
- 54:53Scooby Dooisms are always gonna be good in my book.
- 54:55It's like y you can't go wrong.
- 54:56I'm pretty sure I'm
- 54:57pretty sure they did that in the ghosted Mr.
- 54:59Chicken as well. Yeah. Not no s not trying to spoil it for Bryce,
- 55:00Yeah, yeah. That was like a secret staircase.
- 55:05but
- 55:06Yeah. I
- 55:06I'm just gonna nod my head in agreement.
- 55:08Yes, they did do that, yes.
- 55:10yeah, I took note I felt like this was one of the strong suits of the movie
- 55:14was the production
- 55:15Yeah.
- 55:15design here. I while there was a good bit of like early two thousands
- 55:20CGI or like sections of the museum that were like,
- 55:24you can tell you know, off in the distance is like a green screen.
- 55:28for like every shot like that,
- 55:30like the rest of it would still like like be very detailed kind of sets that like
- 55:36they actually built and stuff and I I thought it was pretty good.
- 55:38Sure.
- 55:38Like the mausoleum scene when they go
- 55:40Mm-hmm.
- 55:41Dude. Yeah.
- 55:41in there to retrieve the key,
- 55:42I thought that looked really good.
- 55:44The study scene, like you said.
- 55:46there was some really good like production design and like that felt like
- 55:50a lot of money went into it, you know.
- 55:52Shout out to whenever the they would use practical effects too.
- 55:55I mean, i they're they're here and there and
- 55:57Yeah.
- 55:57whenever it happened it it w it was like wow that's pretty cool.
- 56:00They're actually standing in front of something.
- 56:01That's scary.
- 56:03This is also
- 56:04one of those things where the a lot of times characters or a lot of times props
- 56:10get blended in with set design,
- 56:11but this time a character gets mixed with set design and that's Madame Leota.
- 56:16She's pretty much a set design or piece of set.
- 56:18Yeah, I
- 56:20I mean, not to get ahead of ourselves,
- 56:21like I was wondering, like, is she a prop?
- 56:23I don't know. Like, you know. But no.
- 56:27She kinda is a prop, yeah.
- 56:27Yeah.
- 56:29Kind of you
- 56:29know, roll rolls around.
- 56:31Mm-hmm.
- 56:31Yeah.
- 56:32I did write down some of the the references.
- 56:34We've already talked about the singing bus.
- 56:36~ the Madame Leota character, that there's a whole section of the ride there.
- 56:40~
- 56:41yeah, the spinning stuff around the room.
- 56:43Yes. ~
- 56:44Yeah, yeah.
- 56:44The Ghostly Ballroom, ~ is is featured here.
- 56:49The hitchhiking
- 56:49Okay.
- 56:50ghosts. ~ and
- 56:52Classic.
- 56:53yeah, so I it there's a few other ones,
- 56:55but just
- 56:56I I did feel like there was a lot of ~ I they made an effort to to tie
- 57:01it into the ride still. And tie it in with their original story.
- 57:04Like I felt like they tried.
- 57:05Mm-hmm.
- 57:06Yeah.
- 57:07Yeah, I agree. They also bonus points for the tiki room themed bar.
- 57:11They didn't have to do that.
- 57:11Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 57:13But they did and we thank them for it.
- 57:15Yes, yes, yes. another side thing about the set design is the chairs
- 57:20in the dining room were later added to both the Disneyland Haunted Mansion
- 57:26and the Pirates of the Caribbean attractions.
- 57:28In the Haunted Mansion, the chair appears in a portrait of the updated attic.
- 57:36belonging to one of the bride's murdered husbands.
- 57:37In both updated versions of the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom Pirates attractions.
- 57:42It's in the final treasure room scene as the chair Captain Jack Sparrow
- 57:47is sitting in.
- 57:48Mm-hmm.
- 57:49So n they didn't just add they could have added Eddie Murphy,
- 57:52but they added the chair.
- 57:54So if so we got that.
- 57:56It could be anyone.
- 57:57So yeah.
- 58:00So
- 58:01that's kinda cool that Jack Sparrow is sitting in Eddie Murphy's chair.
- 58:04~
- 58:06We got something.
- 58:07but yeah, so I think we're definitely good to pass this one,
- 58:11right guys?
- 58:13Yeah, I think so.
- 58:14yeah.
- 58:15Alright.
- 58:16It's
- 58:16one of the movies strong suits,
- 58:17I'd say. Yeah.
- 58:18I agree, I agree.
- 58:19We've got the cinematography and animation test.
- 58:22~ this is like a sort of catch-all
- 58:26for how creative the camera work or the animation can be,
- 58:32~ basically with visuals. We've c sort of added like special effects under this
- 58:38category as well. And I just wanna say I'm a big fan,
- 58:43actually. Not necessarily of cinematography.
- 58:48wasn't jumping out at me, but a
- 58:50Mm.
- 58:50lot of the effects were good and a lot of the effects were bad.
- 58:54But one of my favorite ones, Abby actually pointed it out,
- 58:57was whenever he was hitting the window and it was cracking and it
- 59:03was just self healing with every single
- 59:04Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 59:06hit. That was a pretty cool ~ animation there.
- 59:09And I have a question. I couldn't
- 59:12Mm-hmm.
- 59:13tell because I don't know.
- 59:17the lighting of our projector or whatever.
- 59:19But was the singing busts claymation or were they like animatronics?
- 59:26'Cause they moved
- 59:28~
- 59:28like animatronics, but they I could I thought they were claymation.
- 59:33I I'm pretty sure they they just kind of like filmed the faces separately
- 59:39and then superimposed them on the bus.
- 59:41I think I saw that.
- 59:43Okay.
- 59:45Are we talking about like four for the ride
- 59:46you ~
- 59:47or for the movie?
- 59:48yeah. You know what? I what I saw was
- 59:50For the movie.
- 59:51for the ride actually. So what they d the ones for the ride they're they like
- 59:53I was like, that doesn't match.
- 59:55they like projected like you know,
- 59:57the film of the people moving the faces on
- 59:59Uh-huh.
- 59:59like the blank bus. But I I don't know about the movie,
- 1:00:02how they did it.
- 1:00:03The movie looked like it was claymation,
- 1:00:05and if that is the case, automatic point for me.
- 1:00:09I think it was i I I think it was C G,
- 1:00:11but it was just sort of done in this stilted s like kinda
- 1:00:13It it was yeah.
- 1:00:15deliberately stuttery sort of way to replicate what it would look like if
- 1:00:19a a stone character's face was moving.
- 1:00:21~ yeah, yeah. ~ one of
- 1:00:21Yeah. Like the Rankin Bass,
- 1:00:22Okay.
- 1:00:24like the
- 1:00:25you know, the Claymation Rudolph Snowman specials,
- 1:00:27Yeah. Right, right, right.
- 1:00:29the way he's like
- 1:00:31Yeah, ~ one
- 1:00:32Okay.
- 1:00:32of one of the busts looking ~ weirdly like Walt Disney himself,
- 1:00:37interestingly enough. Yeah,
- 1:00:38Yeah, I n I thought that. Yeah.
- 1:00:39Yeah.
- 1:00:40had the had like the had like the pencil stash
- 1:00:42and everything.
- 1:00:44Yeah.
- 1:00:47Okay. I'm looking it up 'cause it's pretty important for me to know this.
- 1:00:51Yeah. I mean I w while you're doing that I will say that ~ as
- 1:00:54far as like cinematography goes,
- 1:00:56I I don't think the movie did anything crazy with like,
- 1:00:58you know, camera angles or shots or anything,
- 1:01:01you know, like no good old
- 1:01:01Yeah.
- 1:01:02fashioned Dutch angle or turn reveal,
- 1:01:04blah blah blah, that kind of stuff.
- 1:01:06But
- 1:01:07For the most part, I I think the special effects aren't too bad.
- 1:01:12~ I do want to shout out the ~ like the the monster in the mausoleum.
- 1:01:17That was ~ a really cool practical effect that they did.
- 1:01:20Yes.
- 1:01:21That I that that that scene is actually like a pretty good one in in the movie.
- 1:01:24It's scary.
- 1:01:25Yeah, it's it's pretty intense.
- 1:01:28Yeah
- 1:01:28I don't do zombies, they stress me out.
- 1:01:30But man,
- 1:01:32that was that was a scary one.
- 1:01:34Yeah.
- 1:01:35Yeah, I I think going into this,
- 1:01:38I was probably gonna say no, but you've kinda brought up some good points for me.
- 1:01:42Like I feel like there was some some good shots and some some interesting stuff
- 1:01:46done. I the
- 1:01:47Dude.
- 1:01:47one thing I was gonna say is I really did like the prologue,
- 1:01:51like the opening of the movie.
- 1:01:52~ I felt like that was actually shot in a way that
- 1:01:55was like more cinematic or i like a
- 1:02:00Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:00little bit different for the time,
- 1:02:00Yeah I I mean
- 1:02:01more
- 1:02:02stylized of like
- 1:02:05I don't know. I just a a dark evening in the past,
- 1:02:08you know, of this period piece.
- 1:02:08Yeah, just the the parts of it that didn't
- 1:02:10look like a Playstation Two cutscene,
- 1:02:11yeah.
- 1:02:12Yeah.
- 1:02:14Yeah.
- 1:02:15~ and then like some of the other parts just kinda felt like an early
- 1:02:18two thousands comedy, the way it was shot,
- 1:02:20but
- 1:02:21True.
- 1:02:21it did have some good moments.
- 1:02:23I I'm gonna almost guarantee like ninety nine percent sure that they did
- 1:02:28not do stop motion animation for this movie.
- 1:02:31No, it's that feels a little bit too high effort.
- 1:02:34~ th what I'm getting right now is not stop motion,
- 1:02:39but it's not CGI either. I might have wrong information.
- 1:02:44You think someone would do that?
- 1:02:45Someone would just go on the internet and post lies?
- 1:02:48Yeah.
- 1:02:51Okay, it is a blend of CGI but they used they took
- 1:02:57the Dapper Dans and they did heavy makeup on them to make look like
- 1:03:04that. But then they made it like they got rid of their arms and stuff.
- 1:03:09So it was like hair and makeup.
- 1:03:11Heavy, heavy concrete makeup
- 1:03:16and I guess touching it up and
- 1:03:19Hmm.
- 1:03:20doing CGI. So that is kinda sad,
- 1:03:21but still cool.
- 1:03:21Yeah.
- 1:03:22Yeah. Well, so
- 1:03:24the the movie ~ had R Rick Baker working on it,
- 1:03:30who did a lot of the ~ the the makeup and
- 1:03:31Ricky Baker. Ricky Baker.
- 1:03:34like effects and stuff like that.
- 1:03:35He actually has he's he's very famous.
- 1:03:38He won an Oscar ~ or an Academy Award for makeup,
- 1:03:42~ on American Werewolf in London was one.
- 1:03:44~ man, great movie.
- 1:03:46Okay.
- 1:03:47but he's he's done a ton of movies,
- 1:03:49like looking through his his list here.
- 1:03:51all through I mean he worked on like the the original trilogy Star Wars movies.
- 1:03:55He's been working for years since the seventies.
- 1:03:57Yeah.
- 1:03:58~
- 1:03:58He's he's got some pedigree.
- 1:04:00yeah.
- 1:04:00Yeah. That's pretty good.
- 1:04:02Yeah.
- 1:04:02~
- 1:04:03worked on Gremlins too. He worked on Norbit and you know that had a lot
- 1:04:08of makeup to that character.
- 1:04:08You should have led with that.
- 1:04:10Yeah, an another another fantastic Eddie Murphy
- 1:04:13masterpiece just right up there.
- 1:04:15my.
- 1:04:16I made Jeremy watch that with me 'cause I wanted to see it and ~ we we laughed.
- 1:04:20It's a rough one.
- 1:04:21Not a good movie, but we laughed.
- 1:04:23I w
- 1:04:23I was way too young when I saw that movie.
- 1:04:26Ha ha ha
- 1:04:26Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:31Yeah. I so I I just wanted to to mention that.
- 1:04:34Like they had someone working on the effects with the costumes and and
- 1:04:37the and the makeup for this movie.
- 1:04:39Okay. Well where does it sit? Are we wanting to pass or fail?
- 1:04:45I'll leave it up to you two. I could go either way.
- 1:04:48Feel like it's lean and yes.
- 1:04:50I mean yeah I I'm gonna be charitable but I mean it is t it's two thousand three,
- 1:04:54you know, it's like the C C G's not gonna be amazing or anything,
- 1:04:58but ~ for I I thought for what it was,
- 1:04:58Yeah. Hold up. Pirates of the Caribbean CG
- 1:05:01it it
- 1:05:04Incredible.
- 1:05:05That's yeah, that is a good point.
- 1:05:06The skeleton pirates look pretty good.
- 1:05:08Well, maybe the skeleton pirates weren't pretty bad.
- 1:05:08I liked I thought they like look.
- 1:05:10But the next movie The next movie was even better,
- 1:05:13I I'm gonna
- 1:05:14but
- 1:05:15say this. It's like when when you have something like ghosts or skeleton pirates
- 1:05:19or whatever, people will be like,
- 1:05:20that doesn't look realistic. How do you make
- 1:05:23A a ghost look
- 1:05:23Exactly.
- 1:05:24realistic. That's not their ghosts aren't real.
- 1:05:26So like how do you make that look real?
- 1:05:28You know? It's like you it it's going to look fake.
- 1:05:31I I don't know how you do a convincing ghost.
- 1:05:33I I I've yet to see one.
- 1:05:34Yeah. That's fair. That's fair.
- 1:05:37Yeah.
- 1:05:37I I I'm gonna
- 1:05:37I
- 1:05:38say yes and if I'm alone on this hill then I'll I'll I will stand here with
- 1:05:41my flag raised and that'll be it.
- 1:05:42Wow, can you believe he said yes?
- 1:05:43Yeah.
- 1:05:44Yikes.
- 1:05:45Yeah.
- 1:05:46It's how it was always meant to be.
- 1:05:47It's me versus
- 1:05:48What?
- 1:05:48the Jones brothers.
- 1:05:50Which way were you leaning, Jeremy?
- 1:05:51When I mean you brought up some some cool effects and stuff,
- 1:05:52I really I'm I'm on the fence
- 1:05:54so Mm.
- 1:05:57with it because it just didn't show much cinematography wise.
- 1:06:00But the the effects in the animation I did like a lot,
- 1:06:05so I'm willing to I'm willing to pass it,
- 1:06:07I think.
- 1:06:08Okay.
- 1:06:09~ and if the listeners are outraged by it,
- 1:06:11let us know in the Discord and we will maybe adjust it.
- 1:06:13Alright. Mm hmm I feel like we gave
- 1:06:15But yeah.
- 1:06:17some some good evidence to give it a pass,
- 1:06:19even though it might not be a the best,
- 1:06:20Yeah. It was just barely passing though,
- 1:06:22you know. Yeah. Okay, we'll give we'll give it the point.
- 1:06:24I feel. So Yeah, well let's do
- 1:06:26it. Alright.
- 1:06:28It
- 1:06:28the movie brings the vibes, you know.
- 1:06:30That you know?
- 1:06:30It does.
- 1:06:32You're right. Okay, so the next test is our sound design test.
- 1:06:37What do y'all think about that?
- 1:06:40What's what's the sound design feel like to you?
- 1:06:44~ for me, I did not really write down any like you know,
- 1:06:49iconic moment as far as the sound effects and stuff like that go.
- 1:06:53Yeah.
- 1:06:54I liked, you know, what the music was doing,
- 1:06:56~ for that category. But as far as this goes,
- 1:07:00like I I didn't feel like there was any like jump scares or any like iconic moments
- 1:07:06to where like the sound
- 1:07:07Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:08made an impact on me. But I don't know,
- 1:07:11maybe you guys remember some some moments?
- 1:07:14~
- 1:07:15I mean nothing in particular stands out,
- 1:07:18but there was I also can't say that there was anything that necessarily broke
- 1:07:21my immersion. ~ I I thought for the
- 1:07:22Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:07:23Yeah.
- 1:07:23I thought for the most part the ~ like the und underscoring,
- 1:07:28like the ~ the ambiance one might say.
- 1:07:31~
- 1:07:31Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:32for the most part it was it was all pretty solid.
- 1:07:34The only thing that stuck out to me was that they would use this it it's very like
- 1:07:38late nineties, early two thousands.
- 1:07:40There there would be a lot of moments,
- 1:07:42I think it's like part of the soundtrack or something where there
- 1:07:45just be this sound like this one sound effect that's kind of like
- 1:07:49in the background or whatever.
- 1:07:50It w as soon as you notice
- 1:07:51Mm.
- 1:07:52it you start noticing it a lot.
- 1:07:53And and I just remember
- 1:07:54Yeah.
- 1:07:54thinking, okay, this is taking me out just a little.
- 1:07:56That was the only complaint I had was that there was just this
- 1:07:59one particular sound effect they really liked using in the score.
- 1:08:02Yeah.
- 1:08:03There were some things that were good,
- 1:08:04some things not great.
- 1:08:06let me let me ask you this. Whenever he pulled back the bust to reveal like that
- 1:08:13hidden passage, you know, what did that sound like?
- 1:08:16Did it sound good?
- 1:08:17Okay.
- 1:08:17I mean,
- 1:08:18how how many hidden passages have you come across,
- 1:08:20Jonathan? It's like do you d do you know what it should
- 1:08:22N not in real life. I've just I've just seen a
- 1:08:24lot in movies, you know. I feel like that would be a prime thing for that
- 1:08:28to be like a good sound effect right there.
- 1:08:30Mm.
- 1:08:31I if it I there's another thing where like if we weren't taken out of the movie,
- 1:08:36that's a point for it. Like that's good.
- 1:08:39And I don't
- 1:08:40Mm-hmm. Sure.
- 1:08:41think it was bad enough for me to be taken out,
- 1:08:46you know?
- 1:08:47Yeah.
- 1:08:47One thing that was immersive that I liked,
- 1:08:49~ was when they're in the ballroom and like some of the larger rooms,
- 1:08:55you can really tell how loud
- 1:08:57Mm-hmm. Okay. Yeah.
- 1:08:57Or how big the room is that you're in based off of the the echoey sound.
- 1:09:00Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:02~
- 1:09:02Yeah,
- 1:09:02yeah.
- 1:09:04I thought that was good. It's kinda like and it's very like up close
- 1:09:07and personal when you're in like the passageways and stuff.
- 1:09:10Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:11So that's a point for me in that regard,
- 1:09:14but you know
- 1:09:15Okay, okay.
- 1:09:16although nothing else really stood out to me,
- 1:09:18so I'm okay with failing this if y'all want to.
- 1:09:24Yeah, I I I I didn't think it was particularly noteworthy.
- 1:09:31I I felt like the soundtrack was kinda carrying a lot of the sound on this one.
- 1:09:35That's true.
- 1:09:37I that that's kinda where I was leaning.
- 1:09:39Okay. Yeah, I'm good to feel that.
- 1:09:42yeah, you know, I I I think I might if I'm thinking more on it I I might give
- 1:09:46it a fail as well, just 'cause it's y when you're really thinking about
- 1:09:48all the kind of stuff you could be doing with like,
- 1:09:51you know, the haunted mansion,
- 1:09:52it kinda feels like they didn't take it far enough.
- 1:09:55Yeah, let's fail that. It's an objective test.
- 1:09:58We have to be hard on it too. We'll go easy
- 1:10:01Fortunately.
- 1:10:02on it in the bonus test though.
- 1:10:03so the cool credits test, ~ worth one point.
- 1:10:08Does this movie have great opening credits?
- 1:10:11Does it have good ending credits?
- 1:10:13Is there anything at the end of the credits that like like an in credit scene
- 1:10:17or just any motion graphics that make it just not black words on a screen?
- 1:10:22Yeah. ~ did you stay for the post credit scene for this one?
- 1:10:27No?
- 1:10:28Apparently there was a
- 1:10:28You you didn't see the part where
- 1:10:29Nick Fury and invites the ghosts that are still there to the
- 1:10:32put the Avengers initiative?
- 1:10:32Yeah.
- 1:10:35I did not
- 1:10:37Mean
- 1:10:37Th
- 1:10:37there is a little tag at the end of the the credits with Madame Leota where
- 1:10:42she comes where she basically ~ she I think it's I could be wrong.
- 1:10:48I feel like it's something possibly from the attraction where you hear her say,
- 1:10:52like, hurry back, hurry back, be sure to bring your death certificate
- 1:10:55if you decide to join us. Make final arrangements
- 1:10:57Ha ha ha.
- 1:10:58now. We've been dying to have you.
- 1:11:00So you kinda see her like floating around and
- 1:11:01And I say yes I say yes
- 1:11:04anything for you Jennifer Tilly Yes
- 1:11:06Yeah.
- 1:11:10Yeah. Well
- 1:11:12So it had a cool little, you know,
- 1:11:14post credit scene. And then I thought the opening scene was really cool.
- 1:11:18'Cause they you get the whole flashbacks of the the origin
- 1:11:22and they interspersed that. Yeah,
- 1:11:22I was getting Beauty and the Beast vibes from that.
- 1:11:25a little bit. Yeah. Yeah. Mm hmm.
- 1:11:26Ver very masquerade ball. Very
- 1:11:28Yeah.
- 1:11:28~
- 1:11:29yeah.
- 1:11:30So I I thought the credits were cool.
- 1:11:33Yeah, no, they're they're good.
- 1:11:34I like
- 1:11:34Yeah. As a motion graphic designer I will say the opening credits were pretty rough
- 1:11:43visually, but story wise it was pretty good.
- 1:11:44Okay. Mm-hmm.
- 1:11:45The aforementioned PS two cutscenes,
- 1:11:46Yes, yes.
- 1:11:47you didn't like those?
- 1:11:49Yeah.
- 1:11:50However, they did try to make it interesting,
- 1:11:53and that's good enough for us.
- 1:11:55~ I could have used a narrator,
- 1:11:59I think. It was pretty long for the intro,
- 1:12:02but I don't know.
- 1:12:05Well at the the start of the movie it opens with the line from the ride,
- 1:12:09like, Welcome, foolish mortals.
- 1:12:10Was there no narrator for that?
- 1:12:12Was that just text on screen?
- 1:12:16I think for that part.
- 1:12:17Okay.
- 1:12:18It th it could have d it could have
- 1:12:19I just mean for the rest of the sequence.
- 1:12:21Okay.
- 1:12:21done for ~ I mean if they wanted it to be like more true to the ride,
- 1:12:25it definitely could have done with a an opening sequence that
- 1:12:27was like being narrated. Like that w I think
- 1:12:30Yeah.
- 1:12:30that would have like stepped the movie up a little bit in my books for sure.
- 1:12:34Yeah.
- 1:12:35~
- 1:12:36It's like someone's like reading
- 1:12:37through a storybook and then y it turns out to be Shrek.
- 1:12:40Ha ha
- 1:12:44Like that'll ever happen.
- 1:12:46Yeah.
- 1:12:47Yeah.
- 1:12:48Well, ~ so what do you think, Jeremy?
- 1:12:50Is it is it worth the point? Okay.
- 1:12:51I'm passing that. Yeah, I mean I was nitpicky with it,
- 1:12:53Mm-hmm. Okay.
- 1:12:54but I think it's definitely worth a point.
- 1:12:55Some
- 1:12:56movies don't even have opening credits,
- 1:12:58so ~ I'm here. I'm here for it.
- 1:12:58Mm-hmm. Okay.
- 1:13:01They got the spirit.
- 1:13:01So
- 1:13:03they do. They do. Alright, so our final test of the objective section is the
- 1:13:09Rewatchable review factor. Now most movies rarely achieve
- 1:13:15the impossible, like Stealing the Declaration of Independence.
- 1:13:19Is this a movie that you want to watch over and over again?
- 1:13:23How rewatchable is this movie?
- 1:13:26Can
- 1:13:26I think it's nostalgic enough for me that I didn't even watch it that much.
- 1:13:29Obviously Bryce is just dancing across the screen.
- 1:13:34I'm
- 1:13:34just thinking.
- 1:13:37I think this is rewatchable for Bryce easily.
- 1:13:39As someone who didn't grow up with this movie as like a constant staple,
- 1:13:46~ I also agree this is a rewatchable movie.
- 1:13:50It's not good, but it's almost a comfort movie.
- 1:13:52To me. It's it's it's silly.
- 1:13:56Mm-hmm.
- 1:13:56It's a good, easy Halloween movie to throw on.
- 1:13:59~
- 1:14:00Yeah, I was about
- 1:14:01to say just put it on in the background.
- 1:14:02Like if you're at the Halloween party or something,
- 1:14:04or just I don't know for the heck of
- 1:14:05Yeah.
- 1:14:06it, just p I put it on. Per completely inoffensive movie.
- 1:14:10Mm.
- 1:14:10Yeah.
- 1:14:11Yeah, ~ one one of the thoughts that Kelsey had was that she
- 1:14:15she doesn't necessarily like think it's the best movie or anything,
- 1:14:19but it is something that she'll like let play in the background
- 1:14:23and not pay attention to it, you know,
- 1:14:24if she wants the vibes or whatever,
- 1:14:26if she's working on something else,
- 1:14:26A watch is a watch.
- 1:14:28you
- 1:14:28know. ~ I think for me I I I didn't I didn't love
- 1:14:34the movie that much. I think you guys might like it a
- 1:14:36Yeah.
- 1:14:36little bit more than than I did.
- 1:14:38~
- 1:14:40But I can kind of appreciate it as a a Halloween rewatch,
- 1:14:44but other than that, I don't know.
- 1:14:48Yeah.
- 1:14:49I mean, I I feel like that's the e essence of a rewatch though,
- 1:14:52is like if
- 1:14:52Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:52you could see yourself going through a movie like once a year,
- 1:14:55I I I'd definitely argue that's a point in its favor for sure.
- 1:14:58You I'd be hard pressed to find any film I'd want to see more than
- 1:15:00one time during like a month or something.
- 1:15:04If you're going to pick three from our series on Disney Attractions turned rides,
- 1:15:09this would be the third one I would want to watch.
- 1:15:12On my list. The rest of them I don't really
- 1:15:15Okay.
- 1:15:16know. I want I would I don't think I would want to do that.
- 1:15:18I'm talking Country Bears number one,
- 1:15:22Pirates of the Caribbean number two,
- 1:15:24Haunted Mansion three. I think it's our third best one.
- 1:15:28Maybe.
- 1:15:30I'll
- 1:15:30have to w see the results of the IQ test.
- 1:15:32I
- 1:15:33don't know, yeah, we'll see. ~
- 1:15:35Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:35I I think me and Bryce are gonna outnumber you and pass this one.
- 1:15:38Okay. Okay.
- 1:15:39Yeah, I I
- 1:15:40mean, you know how I feel about this movie.
- 1:15:41I I I I can't deny
- 1:15:42Mm.
- 1:15:43it.
- 1:15:43Yeah.
- 1:15:44It's a good one.
- 1:15:44I'm not itching
- 1:15:45to rewatch it, but I probably will at some point,
- 1:15:47you know, during Halloween.
- 1:15:48Does
- 1:15:49does it give it a negative point?
- 1:15:52Does it take away from this test that they tried to re do this movie twice since
- 1:15:58it came out?
- 1:16:01I d not necessarily. I mean, there's some movies that
- 1:16:03Yeah, I mean does it say it
- 1:16:05get remade because they're classics,
- 1:16:07you know? Just throughout the years.
- 1:16:07That's true. The Muppets don't touch just anything.
- 1:16:08But I I would also say do does
- 1:16:11it say anything that like this is the version that,
- 1:16:15you know, you come back to.
- 1:16:19Yeah.
- 1:16:20Alright, we'll just have to pass it then because I think it's
- 1:16:22I mean it, mm-hmm.
- 1:16:22a good one. Yeah. Okay, so let's tally up s what we've got so far.
- 1:16:28okay. So we've got one, two, three,
- 1:16:30four, five, six, seven points on the ejective test,
- 1:16:35which makes this already a staple.
- 1:16:38Let's see if we can make this into the stapley category.
- 1:16:41Stapleyest category.
- 1:16:43~ starting off with a D V D menu test.
- 1:16:46did either of you guys watch this on D V D?
- 1:16:48I pulled it up on Disney Plus,
- 1:16:50so I didn't I didn't see the D V D but well I did
- 1:16:50Okay. Okay.
- 1:16:53look it up on YouTube though.
- 1:16:54Okay. What were your thoughts on it?
- 1:16:58~ I I wasn't impressed to be honest.
- 1:17:02Really? Okay.
- 1:17:03Like I I thought I thought the the first part,
- 1:17:07like they I mean, it was kind of just a shot of the the haunted mansion
- 1:17:12out in the distance. There was kind of some ghosts like,
- 1:17:15you know, floating back and forth and the music was playing.
- 1:17:19~
- 1:17:20Yeah.
- 1:17:21but the wal like the walkthrough of the menu
- 1:17:23I watched was kinda lame to me.
- 1:17:25Like it kind of just like you would click on something and then it would just kinda
- 1:17:28take you to like a static shot of something.
- 1:17:30Okay.
- 1:17:30Like I dunno. I don't know.
- 1:17:34No it's like I I I agree, you know,
- 1:17:36have a little fun with it. If we we
- 1:17:37Yeah.
- 1:17:38we had this and I I don't remember if it was like rental or anything,
- 1:17:41but like we we definitely had it on D V D and ~ yeah,
- 1:17:47no, well as far as my memory goes,
- 1:17:48the D V D menu doesn't really stand out to me all that much.
- 1:17:51So
- 1:17:51It's pretty inexcusable too 'cause
- 1:17:53O three is peak D V D time.
- 1:17:56Like I feel like had this done better they would have spent more time on the menu.
- 1:18:00But I don't know.
- 1:18:01Maybe.
- 1:18:01Sure, sure,
- 1:18:02sure. ~ there is one thing on the D V D that I d did not see,
- 1:18:08so I don't I can't really judge it based off of it.
- 1:18:10But I've heard there's a virtual tour of the film's mansion set with Ezra
- 1:18:16and Emma as a special feature.
- 1:18:18That's kinda cool.
- 1:18:19there is a ghost host character from the ride that gives directions
- 1:18:22on how to proceed. ~ the actor for the character was the late Tony J.
- 1:18:29So I I feel like that's pretty cool to do a house tour by yourself.
- 1:18:33I also can see that becoming really clunky.
- 1:18:38Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:38Like there's a D V D game on the Chamber of Secrets where it's like
- 1:18:42you escape the Forbidden Forest.
- 1:18:44It was very f never.
- 1:18:45I love those. Those things those games never worked properly.
- 1:18:48Those were there's the Like threw together.
- 1:18:48Yeah.
- 1:18:48Another cutscene.
- 1:18:51Some poor some
- 1:18:52Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:52poor intern like put that thing together in like a week and slapped it
- 1:18:55Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:56Yeah. So
- 1:18:56into the DVD files. Yeah.
- 1:18:58Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:59I feel like y'all are leaning towards no,
- 1:19:01but something cool like that would give it a good point for me.
- 1:19:04What's bonus feature though, you know?
- 1:19:05That's a bonus feature.
- 1:19:05Yeah yeah. Well, ba part
- 1:19:06Is it
- 1:19:07a menu?
- 1:19:08of it
- 1:19:08though, I mean they they could have easily have not had it in the D V D,
- 1:19:11but at the same time, if you wanted my personal opinion,
- 1:19:15~ I don't know if that necessarily saves it.
- 1:19:17I'd probably have to say that the DVD menus are a fail.
- 1:19:18Yeah, if why
- 1:19:21you know, why put so much effort and energy on that if you're not gonna have
- 1:19:24a good home page for your D V D menu,
- 1:19:27you know? So, I agree with you.
- 1:19:28Yeah. Man, have fun with it. It's Haunted Mansion
- 1:19:30D V D menu, bro. Have fun, you know?
- 1:19:32Yeah.
- 1:19:34Yeah, we'll we'll definitely fail that then.
- 1:19:38Okay, this is our funniest test because it's ironic.
- 1:19:43But ~ the theme park attraction test.
- 1:19:46Could this movie be turned into a theme park attraction?
- 1:19:49Yes.
- 1:19:50I I don't I I just don't know.
- 1:19:52I mean I I really don't know. I I just can't see it.
- 1:19:56I think we've been giving all of these,
- 1:19:58even if it's a horrible movie,
- 1:19:58Yeah. ~ automatic point, yeah.
- 1:19:59an automatic pass.
- 1:20:01You don't you don't think
- 1:20:02Yeah.
- 1:20:02this one would be dead on arrival?
- 1:20:06Yeah.
- 1:20:08I don't think so. And it the fact
- 1:20:09Well, in this case it'd be
- 1:20:10a good thing, right?
- 1:20:12Yeah.
- 1:20:14The fact that this is one of the first ever Disney attractions and it's still around
- 1:20:20today speaks a lot, you know? So this is a special especially a good one.
- 1:20:26Yeah. Especially 'cause it's not based on ~ like any particular franchise that they
- 1:20:31have or anything. 'Cause
- 1:20:32Yeah.
- 1:20:33I I mean that's th that's something that they do too,
- 1:20:35is like some rides will get retooled to ~ like feature a franchise or something,
- 1:20:41like Splash Mountain got turned
- 1:20:41Yeah.
- 1:20:42into a princess in the frog ride and everything.
- 1:20:44Right, right, right.
- 1:20:44~
- 1:20:45i it's sort of a testament to how timeless the haunted mansion is that
- 1:20:49it it never they never changed it,
- 1:20:51they never like ~ added anything crazy,
- 1:20:54they just kind of improved and iterated on what was our
- 1:20:56already
- 1:20:57there. It's just a non-specific
- 1:20:58Yeah.
- 1:20:58general haunted mansion and and the hitchhiking ghosts are c like characters unto
- 1:21:03themselves, you know, like the the
- 1:21:05Yeah.
- 1:21:06the ride is ~ the attraction is the attraction,
- 1:21:09you know?
- 1:21:11Yeah. Automatic point.
- 1:21:13Alright. Automatic point. Boom.
- 1:21:14Yeah.
- 1:21:16Okay, then we've got the proprietary props test or iconic props.
- 1:21:21~ what is there a standout prop that you can see whether you're
- 1:21:27in a museum or like you just see this prop and you're like,
- 1:21:31that's specifically from this movie.
- 1:21:33And it can't be Madame Leota 'cause she's a character.
- 1:21:38I
- 1:21:39I did not have anything that stood out to me.
- 1:21:41Like I felt like the thing that stood out the most was like the key that they were
- 1:21:45trying to find for the for the chest.
- 1:21:46Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:48But that's like that's just generic,
- 1:21:50you know. Are are we missing something giant?
- 1:21:54Very much.
- 1:21:55Okay. The flyer, the Evers and Evers flyer?
- 1:21:57It's not it's not
- 1:21:58great. It's not amazing. But I would
- 1:22:01It it's it's hard to name something
- 1:22:02that isn't like a character or part of the set design itself,
- 1:22:05am going to put forth a suggestion for the the iconic prop of the movie
- 1:22:10For the consideration of the Midnight Society.
- 1:22:10and that one pr
- 1:22:10Okay.
- 1:22:13precisely it is the candelabra with a dozen candles
- 1:22:19and cobwebs on it.
- 1:22:20Iconic enough? Probably not. Probably not.
- 1:22:23Well if you saw that in a museum you probably just think,
- 1:22:25wow, they haven't they haven't dusted that candelabra in a while.
- 1:22:29Yeah.
- 1:22:29Feel
- 1:22:29like it could be a lot of different it could be a lot of different,
- 1:22:29It could be Phantom of the Opera,
- 1:22:31it could be Yeah.
- 1:22:32yeah.
- 1:22:33Can I really not count Madame
- 1:22:34Good point.
- 1:22:34Lioda's orb? I I I really feel like the orb
- 1:22:37We
- 1:22:37we can't because he she's a character.
- 1:22:39Yeah.
- 1:22:40That's basically a costume for her in our logic.
- 1:22:42Ha ha.
- 1:22:42Mm-hmm.
- 1:22:46So and if anything it's set design.
- 1:22:47Yeah, man, this movie
- 1:22:49Yeah, this movie really needed like a like a MacGuffin or something.
- 1:22:52Like a something really iconic.
- 1:22:54Yeah.
- 1:22:54And
- 1:22:55and that's the thing, like the ma the objects are enchanted
- 1:22:58and they become characters, like the singing bus or Madame Leota.
- 1:23:01So it makes it hard for like some of those moments to
- 1:23:03Yeah.
- 1:23:04to like pick a cool prop.
- 1:23:07Alright,
- 1:23:07well Yeah, I guess we'll just have to fail that one then.
- 1:23:11The the movie worked against itself.
- 1:23:14Unfortunately. Doesn't pass our subjective test,
- 1:23:17but whatever. Alright, ~ boom.
- 1:23:20Failed. Unfortunately. Okay,
- 1:23:24this brings it up to our second to last test,
- 1:23:27the fantastic foods and where to find them test.
- 1:23:31What ~ what foods stand out to you in this movie?
- 1:23:39That made you want to eat.
- 1:23:41Why don't you kick it off, Jeremy?
- 1:23:44All I wanna say is that as soon as those cookies came on stage,
- 1:23:47Abby was like, Ooh, cookies sound really good right now.
- 1:23:51So we paused the
- 1:23:51Mm-hmm.
- 1:23:52movie and I made some cookies.
- 1:23:53That's a that's a call to action if I'm gonna ever gonna see one,
- 1:23:58That's that's a pretty
- 1:23:59What
- 1:23:59you know?
- 1:23:59strong
- 1:24:00point in its favor, I will say.
- 1:24:01If it like made you
- 1:24:02What?
- 1:24:02stop everything and go get the food that was being featured.
- 1:24:06Yeah.
- 1:24:06What
- 1:24:06what cookies though? I don't remember.
- 1:24:08What scene are you talking about?
- 1:24:08~ Jonathan. Jonathan, Jonathan,
- 1:24:11Jonathan.
- 1:24:13~ the where Ezra and I already I already forgot her name.
- 1:24:19When they meet up with the kids
- 1:24:19~ yes, yes, okay. Yes,
- 1:24:23they were gonna bring them cookies.
- 1:24:24Okay. Those did look good.
- 1:24:29I can't say that there were any particular foods that stood out,
- 1:24:32but there were I I I r I remember getting pretty thirsty while I
- 1:24:36was watching this movie. I will say there
- 1:24:37Ha ha.
- 1:24:37was a lot of like delicious looking drinks here and there.
- 1:24:40Yeah.
- 1:24:43How about some soup?
- 1:24:44Yeah. Alright, some soup in like twenty minutes,
- 1:24:46get some soup, head out, you know.
- 1:24:49Didn't even see the soup really.
- 1:24:51~ yeah.
- 1:24:51Yeah. Secret soup.
- 1:24:51Yeah. Yeah, like th
- 1:24:54like we didn't really see them eat anything at the dinner table,
- 1:24:56right? When they get invited in.
- 1:24:58Right. I don't think so.
- 1:24:58Yeah.
- 1:25:00So it'd be based on the cookies,
- 1:25:01but I feel like that's pretty good evidence if it made you want to get
- 1:25:05up and go bake some cookies upon seeing them.
- 1:25:06Mm mm.
- 1:25:07It's true. I mean
- 1:25:08that's i it's a cookie, so it's like
- 1:25:11It's it's hard to not Yeah.
- 1:25:12It it's pretty enticing in general,
- 1:25:14but
- 1:25:17They were good cookies. They
- 1:25:18Yeah.
- 1:25:19weren't movie screen accurate.
- 1:25:20They were just the Trader
- 1:25:21Mm-hmm.
- 1:25:21Joe's cookies and cream cookies,
- 1:25:24Okay. Okay.
- 1:25:24but they were good.
- 1:25:25Yeah.
- 1:25:26Can't
- 1:25:26dude, can't go wrong with Trader Joe's,
- 1:25:28especially at this time of year.
- 1:25:29They got like pumpkin flavored everything over there.
- 1:25:29Yeah. ~
- 1:25:32Go to your
- 1:25:32Mm.
- 1:25:32local Trader Joe's, kids. You gotta get everything that's pumpkin flavored.
- 1:25:36Buy their whole stock.
- 1:25:38Yeah.
- 1:25:41I dude, I I remember when
- 1:25:43I was still in Sarasota going to art school,
- 1:25:45That's his Halloween costume this year.
- 1:25:46I would
- 1:25:46I would like beeline it
- 1:25:47Yeah.
- 1:25:47for Trader Joe's and just start grabbing stuff.
- 1:25:50Okay, well, based off of the cookies,
- 1:25:53are we wanting to pass this? Because I it was a good call to action.
- 1:25:56It's a bonus point. I'm okay. I'm okay with it.
- 1:25:57It's a good
- 1:25:59call to action, but it it's not really like I'm gonna see that tray
- 1:26:02of cookies and know it's from this movie.
- 1:26:04So
- 1:26:06At the same time though,
- 1:26:07the the cookies served ~ an integral part in that sequence because it w
- 1:26:12it it sort of hinted
- 1:26:12That's true.
- 1:26:13to Ramsley the kids might be here because why else would these
- 1:26:16two idiots bring cookies up into the attic?
- 1:26:19Yeah.
- 1:26:19You know, that kind of thing. And and and they lingered
- 1:26:22on the cookies for a while, you know.
- 1:26:23I don't know, I'm gonna I might give it I might give this one.
- 1:26:27Okay.
- 1:26:28Let's pass it.
- 1:26:29Yeah.
- 1:26:30Alright. Okay, this brings us to our last and final test.
- 1:26:35We've got the cool costumes test.
- 1:26:37Now, can this is especially great because this is our Halloween episode,
- 1:26:42but
- 1:26:43Mm-hmm.
- 1:26:43can you take a costume from a character in this movie,
- 1:26:47wear it at a Halloween party, and people will know that ~ you're Jim Evers for sure.
- 1:26:54From Haunted Mansion.
- 1:26:56n none of the none of the human cast and it's kinda cheating
- 1:27:01Okay.
- 1:27:01'cause it's based on a r on a very popular Disney ride,
- 1:27:04but I mean if if anybody was going Yeah,
- 1:27:07So is this movie.
- 1:27:08I was gonna say
- 1:27:09if anyone was dressed as a disembodied ghost head or a hitchhiking spirit
- 1:27:14or something or other,
- 1:27:15Yeah.
- 1:27:15it's like you'd you pretty easily identify like what what it's in a reference to.
- 1:27:20~ I don't
- 1:27:20Okay.
- 1:27:21think this movie did anything like,
- 1:27:22you know, too crazy with the costume design or anything.
- 1:27:26But like for what it was, it was good,
- 1:27:28you know. I
- 1:27:29Sure.
- 1:27:30yeah.
- 1:27:32question is if someone was watching this video right now,
- 1:27:35would they mistake Jeremy for Eddie Murphy in his gray suit?
- 1:27:38It's
- 1:27:38If you put them side by side with each other.
- 1:27:38No.
- 1:27:42the same person.
- 1:27:43It's the best I can do.
- 1:27:45Yeah, I wouldn't
- 1:27:45be able to tell them apart.
- 1:27:46I I I see what you're saying with the with the ghosts and stuff.
- 1:27:50I feel like that would be a hard costume to actually pull off as far as like a
- 1:27:53Yeah.
- 1:27:54like you'd have to be stationary,
- 1:27:55like have a box that you're in and then you kinda stick your head up through like
- 1:27:59a for like the singing bus like a Madame Leota costume.
- 1:28:00Think Yeah.
- 1:28:02I felt like the
- 1:28:02We talked about this, can you and three of your friends walk around with
- 1:28:05a big clunky
- 1:28:06Mm-hmm.
- 1:28:06refrigerator box? You can do it,
- 1:28:08Yeah.
- 1:28:09sing
- 1:28:09Yeah.
- 1:28:10all night, annoy your friends,
- 1:28:11get kicked out of the party.
- 1:28:12You'd have to you would have to
- 1:28:14if you were a barbershop quartet,
- 1:28:15you'd have to dress up as them.
- 1:28:17That's the only
- 1:28:18That
- 1:28:18way to do it.
- 1:28:19that would rock, actually.
- 1:28:20I think
- 1:28:20That that has to have been done.
- 1:28:22Aside from that, like people are just dressed up in suits and old like,
- 1:28:26you know clothes from
- 1:28:28Yeah.
- 1:28:28the period and stuff like that.
- 1:28:30And I I don't know that it would you would tie it directly to this movie.
- 1:28:33So I was leaning no on this one.
- 1:28:34I I I'm
- 1:28:36also leaning no, I think. Are are also
- 1:28:39But I would be really impressed if
- 1:28:41someone did dress up like someone on T for Halloween,
- 1:28:44you know. Yeah.
- 1:28:45That's really hard to do, but I would
- 1:28:47really yeah, I would be impressed as well.
- 1:28:49Our other criteria is if it was if the costume was in a museum,
- 1:28:54would you know that it's from the movie?
- 1:28:55And I don't really think that you know,
- 1:28:58without reading the plaque, I won't I wouldn't figure that out,
- 1:29:01I don't think.
- 1:29:01Yeah,
- 1:29:01probably not.
- 1:29:04Yeah.
- 1:29:05Okay, okay.
- 1:29:05Alright, let's
- 1:29:06go ahead and fail that. And that concludes our IQ test with a total of
- 1:29:11Let's tally up.
- 1:29:16It has nine out of ten points.
- 1:29:17But it's still a good nine
- 1:29:20Staple.
- 1:29:20out of fifteen. It is still a great movie.
- 1:29:23And it is not a quack.
- 1:29:25Congratulations to the Haunted Mansion for being a staple
- 1:29:28of our childhood. How about that?
- 1:29:30Okay, another day, another staple.
- 1:29:32Well everyone, our only questi
- 1:29:32Another day, another staple.
- 1:29:35Our only question left is, what's your favorite version of this movie?
- 1:29:38Is it the Eddie Murphy version?
