Born from a 1959 U.S. buyout, it rebranded in 1969 to tap into rising consumer demand for low prices. With 72 stores by 1986, it thrived in the GTA—until the 80s brought labor strife and fierce competition. A bold 1987 push to open 24-hour “Ultra-Marts” selling hardware and electronics fizzled as finances crumbled.
