- 2:14Speaker 1: Never really noticed and I'm noticing right now how blue
- 2:17Speaker 1: those eyes are of yours.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Shut up. That's really sweet. Well, they are.
- 2:27Speaker 2: They are blue.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I'm kind of far back or you're kind of far back.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Are you? You're blue.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I'm blue as well.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Well, and I just read somewhere that we should be
- 2:37Speaker 1: wearing sunglasses all the time.
- 2:40Speaker 2: No, you're kidding.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Yes. Because we're more susceptible to vision.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Damage.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Sun damaged eyes.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Wow. I have 20-20. No offense.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Brag.
- 2:55Speaker 1: No, I do not.
- 2:56Speaker 2: You still have 20-20.
- 2:58Speaker 3: I still do somehow.
- 3:00Speaker 2: That's incredible.
- 3:02Speaker 1: You i do not i've got reading i've got glasses
- 3:05Speaker 1: for reading and it's going downhill really fast.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Kate has reading glasses you guys could talk about.
- 3:10Speaker 2: That john early it is really good to see you it's.
- 3:13Speaker 3: So good to see you i'm so starstruck You're nuts.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I am.
- 3:19Speaker 2: John, right back at you.
- 3:20Speaker 1: You know, we were, we were watching, we were rewatching
- 3:23Speaker 1: Vicky with a V and Maddie's Secret before we got on.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And we were, we were saying like, there's certain people
- 3:32Speaker 1: when they, um, When they portray female characters that it
- 3:36Speaker 1: feels like aggressive.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah. And you.
- 3:40Speaker 3: They're working through something.
- 3:41Speaker 1: They're working through something.
- 3:42Speaker 3: And I clearly am too.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Well, we all are.
- 3:45Speaker 3: It's maybe, it's maybe.
- 3:47Speaker 4: More coming from some sort of childlike longing and not
- 3:52Speaker 4: necessarily an aggression.
- 3:53Speaker 2: No, it feels very nice. It feels like, it feels very,
- 3:57Speaker 2: like it just makes me feel nice and safe. It
- 3:59Speaker 2: does make me feel weird.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Oh my God. Thank God.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Created so many works of art together.
- 4:09Speaker 1: And you are like partners, but not partners.
- 4:14Speaker 2: You do your own separate things always.
- 4:16Speaker 1: But when you come together, there's like this special language,
- 4:19Speaker 1: like there's a comedy language, but it always consists of
- 4:22Speaker 1: this very thrilling, deep dive into something. Like it's always
- 4:30Speaker 1: really deep and always funny.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Thank God.
- 4:33Speaker 1: When did you first meet Kate? Let's talk about that
- 4:37Speaker 1: origin story.
- 4:38Speaker 4: We first met when I was, I guess we were
- 4:42Speaker 4: both like 24, which was last year. And we met, okay,
- 4:54Speaker 4: we met basically doing our mutual friend's comedy show. Mm-hmm. And,
- 5:00Speaker 4: you know, I, I just had never met someone around
- 5:02Speaker 4: my age who, uh, who was as funny as like
- 5:07Speaker 4: my idols, you know, it was so crazy. I always figured,
- 5:12Speaker 4: you know, the people around me were, we're all going
- 5:14Speaker 4: to be kind of collectively trying to get to that level.
- 5:18Speaker 4: We'll spend their whole lives and we'll always, and we'll
- 5:21Speaker 4: always fail, you know, we'll always fall short.
- 5:23Speaker 3: But I was like, she is just like right there.
- 5:26Speaker 3: She's already there. She's like already.
- 5:28Speaker 4: In a Christopher guest movie, you know, in my mind.
- 5:32Speaker 4: And that night when we were separating, we were just
- 5:35Speaker 4: kind of like, we kind of like set our vows
- 5:38Speaker 4: to each other. And we were like, we were like,
- 5:41Speaker 4: let's have us like a sleepover tomorrow. And we just
- 5:44Speaker 4: like started our friendship the next day. We just like knew. And, and,
- 5:48Speaker 4: and I went over to her apartment and we, We
- 5:51Speaker 4: just did not separate really until she moved to L.A.
- 5:55Speaker 4: We spent like almost every single day together, every night together.
- 5:59Speaker 3: I would literally run out of clothes.
- 6:02Speaker 4: I would run out of underwear and from spending the
- 6:05Speaker 4: night at her apartment so much. And I would just
- 6:07Speaker 4: go to CVS and get a pack of Hanes. And
- 6:11Speaker 4: I'd wear the same shirt and pants every day. And
- 6:14Speaker 4: I would just run out of hands and go get
- 6:16Speaker 4: a new pack.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Because you're like, there's no way I'm leaving this apartment.
- 6:20Speaker 3: I'm not going back to my apartment. I refuse. And Amy,
- 6:22Speaker 3: we slept in the same bed. And we literally... And
- 6:26Speaker 3: the room was as big as the bed. There was
- 6:29Speaker 3: a foot.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Of space on two sides of the floor.
- 6:34Speaker 3: It was tucked into a corner. And we would just...
- 6:38Speaker 3: We slept like.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Like, that was the first thing we noticed.
- 6:42Speaker 4: It was like, we were like, what is this, like,
- 6:45Speaker 4: otherworldly sense of comfort we have with each other that
- 6:48Speaker 4: we can.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Share a bit?
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'm sure you've been asked to explain this, but the
- 6:52Speaker 1: stuff that you guys did together, how would you explain
- 6:55Speaker 1: that type of comedy? If you were to have to
- 6:57Speaker 1: explain the style of it. I can try, but I'd
- 7:00Speaker 1: like to hear what you say.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Okay. Okay, yeah.
- 7:01Speaker 2: It is really hard. Yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 4: I mean, obviously one thing that we love to do
- 7:12Speaker 4: is like, you know, passive aggression.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Yes.
- 7:16Speaker 4: You know, we, we love it so much.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Why do you love it so much? Why do you,
- 7:21Speaker 2: why does Kate love it so much? Why do you
- 7:22Speaker 2: love it? I mean, I do too, but what do
- 7:24Speaker 2: we love about it?
- 7:25Speaker 4: Well, I think, I think I love it because I
- 7:28Speaker 4: come from like the South and which is like a really, um,
- 7:34Speaker 4: you know, you could say the, the birthplace of, um,
- 7:39Speaker 4: like I come from kind of like Protestant world where like,
- 7:42Speaker 4: that is just in the water. It's just like, you don't,
- 7:46Speaker 4: you don't express your anger. So you ha it has
- 7:49Speaker 4: to come out another way. I think for, Kate, she's
- 7:54Speaker 4: been around.
- 7:55Speaker 3: A lot of authoritative, artistic people.
- 8:01Speaker 4: And I think maybe that's where it comes from, is, like,
- 8:04Speaker 4: people who speak with a kind of, like.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Avant-garde authority or whatever it's like there's a there's a
- 8:11Speaker 4: way that that can be incredibly hostile you know while
- 8:15Speaker 4: even if you're speaking in this very.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Measured academic way you know you're like and so maybe
- 8:20Speaker 3: that's where it comes from yes.
- 8:22Speaker 1: There's like a way in which you guys play around
- 8:25Speaker 1: and in her new special she does in parmesan her
- 8:27Speaker 1: new special she does this where you play around with superiority.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Like that's what you put that coat on and take
- 8:35Speaker 1: it off. And of course the other side of that
- 8:37Speaker 1: is inferiority always.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:39Speaker 4: It's like, and I think that if, if we're playing
- 8:42Speaker 4: people who, and this is, I think actually Kate's specialty
- 8:45Speaker 4: is like this, this like the foolishness of like authority
- 8:50Speaker 4: and you know, yeah.
- 8:52Speaker 2: That's so well said.
- 8:54Speaker 3: I hope so.
- 8:55Speaker 2: The certainty part is so true.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Real because especially like in today's culture, like we're surrounded
- 9:02Speaker 1: by experts.
- 9:03Speaker 3: It's so intense.
- 9:04Speaker 4: And I, and I really, I think it's time for
- 9:06Speaker 4: Kate to kind of like seize her throne as like
- 9:08Speaker 4: the great imitator of those things.
- 9:11Speaker 3: She really can.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Like what, what's so crazy about working with her is like,
- 9:16Speaker 4: I mean, it's like, it's awful for me because it's like,
- 9:18Speaker 4: I'm like a cross from her.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I'm like, cool. I have nothing. I'm like, I'm just like,
- 9:22Speaker 3: how do you, I'm always shocked.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I'm very sorry, but I disagree. I feel like I'm
- 9:27Speaker 2: going to say right here, John, that your volley is insane.
- 9:32Speaker 1: It is like Agassi and Sampras. I believe they played together.
- 9:38Speaker 2: I hope they did.
- 9:39Speaker 1: But it is that the back and forth is, it
- 9:43Speaker 1: is Federer and Nadal.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Thank you. Excuse me.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Well, you'll notice that I'm always, I'm like always screaming.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, louder is funnier.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Well, I think she's also, and I'm sure you'll get
- 9:57Speaker 4: into it minute one, but you know, she's an only child.
- 10:00Speaker 4: And so there's like, there is such a, the only
- 10:04Speaker 4: child has to like entertain themselves in the mirror, you know?
- 10:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:07Speaker 4: And, and, and she comes, you know, artist father, like,
- 10:11Speaker 4: you know, she was around these very, at a very
- 10:14Speaker 4: young age. I mean, she was like under the table and,
- 10:17Speaker 4: you know, as, like, with all these, like, kind of very, like,
- 10:21Speaker 4: genius L.A. modern artists, abstract artists, probably having incredibly pretentious, indecipherable,
- 10:29Speaker 4: illegible conversations, you know? And so I think she literally
- 10:33Speaker 4: learned before she was, like, even conscious, she learned how to, like, imitate, just, like,
- 10:39Speaker 4: absorb those sounds and, like, in order to participate because
- 10:43Speaker 4: she was bored.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:44Speaker 3: You know?
- 10:45Speaker 2: Okay.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Do you have a question for Kate today? Anything you
- 10:49Speaker 1: think I should ask her?
- 10:50Speaker 3: I have a few that you should pick from.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Okay, great.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Like some of them are just, they're kind of inside jokes. Great. Perfect.
- 10:59Speaker 4: But I actually think if you get into them, they
- 11:02Speaker 4: will be deep.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Fantastic.
- 11:03Speaker 3: They'll be generative. Okay. So one is, do you miss Paris?
- 11:09Speaker 2: Fantastic. Do you miss Paris? Perfect question.
- 11:12Speaker 3: One is, uh, do you think you're funny?
- 11:15Speaker 2: Oh, incredible.
- 11:16Speaker 1: In Kate's special, she goes deep on this idea that
- 11:20Speaker 1: comedy isn't funny and it's incredible because I agree.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Yes. It's not funny.
- 11:26Speaker 4: And also this is like, this is something that we,
- 11:30Speaker 4: we make ourselves laugh very, very hard. We'll just like,
- 11:33Speaker 4: if it's like suddenly a silence falls, like there's like
- 11:36Speaker 4: a lull in the conversation, I'll be like.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Do you think you're funny? Yeah.
- 11:40Speaker 4: And like, and then we'll, and we'll try to answer
- 11:42Speaker 4: and she'll do it back to me.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Like, do you think you're right? And then, and then
- 11:44Speaker 3: I'll be like, do you think I'm funny? And then
- 11:48Speaker 3: we're like, um, can I be honest? It's a favorite.
- 11:54Speaker 3: It's a favorite.
- 11:55Speaker 4: But I do think it like, it's an inside joke,
- 11:57Speaker 4: but she, if you actually ask her something good could
- 12:00Speaker 4: come out.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Great.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Um, one is how are the kids?
- 12:07Speaker 2: Perfect questions.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Oh, Um, one is related to the special. So are
- 12:13Speaker 3: you gay or what?
- 12:15Speaker 2: Yep. We're going to get into it.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Hopefully Kate really talks about how she's gay. I guess
- 12:22Speaker 1: that's the fastest way to put it.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Yep. Okay, great. Are you gay or what?
- 12:27Speaker 3: And the final one is shoes on or off.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Shoes on or off.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Like as a host.
- 12:32Speaker 2: These questions are incredible.
- 12:34Speaker 3: And did you get my email about Kate's no fly zones?
- 12:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:37Speaker 1: No, I'm going to look at it.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Okay.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Good to know. I'm going to look at it right now.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Good. Good.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Thank you for that. Thank you.
- 12:45Speaker 4: She doesn't have a manager and no one will represent her.
- 12:48Speaker 4: So I've taken it on as we're doing a special.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Thank you for that. Yeah. That's important to see. And
- 12:53Speaker 2: thank you for bolding everything and all caps. I appreciate that. Okay.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Bye y'all.

- 14:53Speaker 2: the green room. Yeah. And I thought, I was like, God,
- 14:56Speaker 2: this is so classy. Like, everyone who comes, you get
- 14:59Speaker 2: this huge box of lipsticks. And I'm going, I'm looking
- 15:01Speaker 2: at the colors. And then I asked... And they were like, oh, yeah,
- 15:04Speaker 2: Jennifer Lawrence left those a few months back. And so
- 15:08Speaker 2: you've had months of guests who look at that. They go,
- 15:11Speaker 2: I'm fine. I don't need to engage in that. I
- 15:13Speaker 2: look at it. I already texted it to my mother,
- 15:16Speaker 2: my partner, my best friend. I'm like, we made it.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And I'm taking it home. Actually, now you have to
- 15:22Speaker 2: because you've touched all of them. Well, they were unused.
- 15:25Speaker 2: So I go, well, this is definitely a gift. This
- 15:26Speaker 2: is a promotional gift to me. It absolutely is a
- 15:28Speaker 2: gift now. You're taking all of those lipstick home. Anything free.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Caperland is here.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Kate, on the drive over here, I just want to
- 15:36Speaker 1: give you, I.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Want to give you a compliment. By the way, I
- 15:41Speaker 2: receive them well. I'm not one of these, who me?
- 15:43Speaker 4: No.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I'm like, please.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Driving over here, I was filled with glee because I
- 15:49Speaker 1: was like, this conversation is going to be so fun,
- 15:52Speaker 1: so funny, so deep. I love seeing you and never
- 15:56Speaker 1: get to. And like, this is a chance to just
- 15:59Speaker 1: actually hang out with you.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 2: I loved your special. I watched it last night.
- 16:03Speaker 3: It's so good.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Thank you for watching it. Thank you. You're welcome. Because
- 16:07Speaker 2: I don't always watch all of the things. Well, I
- 16:09Speaker 2: figured I was doing dishes last night and I go,
- 16:11Speaker 2: by the way, she's not going to watch it. And
- 16:13Speaker 2: I was fine. I know she's so busy. Sometimes I
- 16:15Speaker 2: just like, I can't get to it. You know, I
- 16:18Speaker 2: love you. Couldn't watch it, girl. I would have been like,
- 16:21Speaker 2: of course, you have so much to do. The media
- 16:23Speaker 2: that you're, it's too much. I couldn't wait to watch
- 16:25Speaker 2: it and all of us watched it. Love it.
- 16:28Speaker 1: But more than that, you are this giant brain, avant-garde,
- 16:34Speaker 1: interesting artist who is also warm and nice.
- 16:38Speaker 2: It's hard to find those two things. Thank you.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Sometimes people are like really nice, but maybe not adventurous
- 16:43Speaker 1: in their art. And sometimes people are like, really prickly, sharp,
- 16:48Speaker 1: interesting artists who maybe don't want to talk.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:51Speaker 1: You to me are like the perfect combination of those
- 16:54Speaker 1: two things. You talk about things that I am obsessed with.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Everything in your special, it's hitting me in such a
- 17:00Speaker 1: deep way. And I love your work and you. So
- 17:03Speaker 1: Cape Verlant is here.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Okay, bye.
- 17:05Speaker 2: By the way, that was all on a prompter, just
- 17:07Speaker 2: for people at home. It seems authentic. I saw her,
- 17:09Speaker 2: and I go, and then everything she said. No, I
- 17:13Speaker 2: love you so much. Thank you. That's such kind words.
- 17:18Speaker 2: It means so much to me. grew up with a
- 17:22Speaker 2: picture of you on my wall. I'm going to simply
- 17:24Speaker 2: get to that. Well, you know what? I've told you this.
- 17:25Speaker 2: I had the upright citizens brigade manifesto printed out on
- 17:29Speaker 2: where the words, where the text gets really, really tiny
- 17:31Speaker 2: at the bottom.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Like I'm very, we have had the pleasure of being
- 17:36Speaker 1: in each other's simulations for a lot of our lives. We,
- 17:39Speaker 1: we have, and like the topics that you talk about
- 17:43Speaker 1: always speak to me, but this latest special.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Is so, Okay.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I want to start there before we get into the
- 17:52Speaker 1: bigger picture of your life, because it is so top
- 17:54Speaker 1: of mind and you talk about the things that I
- 17:58Speaker 1: love phones and our love of my, my phone is
- 18:02Speaker 1: my best friend hair.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I talk about hair? Well, I talk about your hair
- 18:08Speaker 2: in my mind when I watch you.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, yeah, totally.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Thank you. You don't talk about hair, but I want
- 18:12Speaker 2: to talk about your hair. It is... I got a
- 18:14Speaker 2: haircut three days ago. Can you believe it? The one
- 18:16Speaker 2: that cuts my hair. She's amazing. That's you with the haircut?
- 18:18Speaker 2: Goo on Fairfax. Go get her. She goes, a few
- 18:21Speaker 2: times I go, shouldn't we cut like an inch, just
- 18:23Speaker 2: an inch? She goes, I want extreme length for you.
- 18:25Speaker 2: And those words, I want extreme length for you. I
- 18:27Speaker 2: want extreme length for you. And now people, I'm like,
- 18:30Speaker 2: it's extreme length. I'm not going to go, I'm not
- 18:33Speaker 2: going waist length.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I noticed that your hair was longer than usual and
- 18:37Speaker 1: I was thrilled by it.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I love extreme length for you. Okay, thank you.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Also, you talk about the hell of being a woman
- 18:45Speaker 1: and how you, you know, rather have it no other way, basically.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Like the combo of like what we are always negotiating
- 18:54Speaker 1: with and that we wouldn't trade it for anything. Like
- 18:57Speaker 1: that's what it feels like when I hear your work.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 19:00Speaker 1: And so for people who are maybe getting to know
- 19:04Speaker 1: Kate for the first time on this podcast, Kate is
- 19:06Speaker 1: a comedian and actress and artist.
- 19:11Speaker 2: And she has a new special on HBO called Parmesan.
- 19:14Speaker 2: And I would, if you don't mind. I forgot all
- 19:17Speaker 2: about you laughing. Don't even bother tuning in. I mean
- 19:23Speaker 2: but why is it called parmesan why is it called
- 19:25Speaker 2: parmesan so you know you hear this thing people go
- 19:28Speaker 2: oh here's a temp title I'm not gonna call it
- 19:29Speaker 2: parmesan that would be insane and it's one of those
- 19:32Speaker 2: things that just I it was just it was making
- 19:35Speaker 2: me laugh because it was just so ridiculous and stupid
- 19:37Speaker 2: I think like I was talking to Chelsea Peretti and
- 19:40Speaker 2: she was like oh you're doing a special what's it
- 19:42Speaker 2: called I said parmesan and she just laughed and I
- 19:44Speaker 2: was like okay because it's just so deeply unserious and
- 19:47Speaker 2: ridiculous and what could that possibly relate to and by
- 19:49Speaker 2: the way, the special isn't about food in any way.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Even though you love to talk about food and you
- 19:54Speaker 2: love restaurants. I mentioned restaurants. But no, Parmesan, when you
- 19:59Speaker 2: watch the special, you'll see it does reference a joke
- 20:01Speaker 2: in the special.
- 20:02Speaker 1: And not to spoil the joke, but it's about this
- 20:06Speaker 1: idea of what we comment on. what draws us to
- 20:12Speaker 1: comment as people on social media and on our phones,
- 20:15Speaker 1: like what we think is a way in which we're
- 20:17Speaker 1: going to connect with what we're reading and the existential
- 20:22Speaker 1: dilemma of that.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Can you talk a little bit about how addicted you
- 20:27Speaker 1: are to your phone?
- 20:28Speaker 2: Because I am too.
- 20:29Speaker 1: And I genuinely, genuinely, genuinely am.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I relapsed so hard. Do you have work or program?
- 20:36Speaker 2: By the way, I have gone to ITAA meetings, Internet
- 20:40Speaker 2: Technology Addiction Anonymous. I don't know if I'm supposed to
- 20:43Speaker 2: say that. I actually would. There's 12-step. Save a seat
- 20:47Speaker 2: for me, as they like to say. I've done the Zooms.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Twice.
- 20:51Speaker 2: But still, I was still, I shared. But I, like,
- 20:54Speaker 2: we do need help.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Yes.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Because we are in the fight for our lives.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Yes.
- 20:58Speaker 2: And it's the kind of thing that it's become, it's
- 21:00Speaker 2: like the weather. It's like this thing that we're just
- 21:02Speaker 2: in and it kind of feels like, why bring it up?
- 21:05Speaker 2: Why talk about it? But I can, you know, I've
- 21:07Speaker 2: gone on, I had six weeks of sobriety. I did
- 21:11Speaker 2: a six-week cleanse, nothing. I've done a month a few times. Okay,
- 21:15Speaker 2: can you just step me through this? What do you
- 21:17Speaker 2: mean by nothing?
- 21:18Speaker 3: Okay, so... Nothing.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Me in a room. No. So what it is, is
- 21:24Speaker 2: by nothing, I mean no social media whatsoever.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Yeah, sure.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Sure. So I still have email and I'm still texting
- 21:29Speaker 2: 24 seven and doing anything else. But no scrolling. No scrolling.
- 21:33Speaker 2: And no, yeah.
- 21:34Speaker 1: And not looking at Instagram reels and TikTok.
- 21:37Speaker 2: No social media. And no social media. None of that.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Not posting anything. None of that.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:41Speaker 2: And- The sixth week was really good. And I said,
- 21:44Speaker 2: I go, I'm not going back this time. I was
- 21:47Speaker 2: telling everyone, I was like, no, I'm out. Yeah, no,
- 21:49Speaker 2: I'm out. I'm out. And I am right back. And
- 21:53Speaker 2: like last night I found myself, I was like, got
- 21:55Speaker 2: home late. And I was like, I've had a long
- 21:58Speaker 2: day of working. You know what? I'm going to unwind.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I'm going to curl up on the couch. And that's
- 22:03Speaker 2: the moment when it becomes infused with this feeling of rest.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Like this is rest and it's not. It's actually chipping away.
- 22:10Speaker 2: in the digital labor mines. And so, you know, and
- 22:14Speaker 2: I'm like, yes. And so, I mean, I have it
- 22:16Speaker 2: in the bath now. Of course I have it in
- 22:18Speaker 2: the bath. Of course, because I was doing baths, no phone.
- 22:19Speaker 2: And I go, baths, no phone. And suddenly it's 1904
- 22:23Speaker 2: and I'm a novelist. And it's like, by the way,
- 22:26Speaker 2: when you go off your phone, I have found three
- 22:28Speaker 2: weeks of no scrolling.
- 22:30Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Memories. I'm driving childhood memories. Like it's unbelievable. I'm like,
- 22:36Speaker 2: I'm back in the kitchen and I'm 10 years old
- 22:38Speaker 2: and my father comes in. Like, like, it's like my
- 22:39Speaker 2: brain is like, thank you. It's opening up and it's
- 22:42Speaker 2: flooding me with images. And, and it's like, you just
- 22:45Speaker 2: start to think again, you start to be more intimate
- 22:48Speaker 2: with your life. And that's the thing that's the most devastating.
- 22:50Speaker 2: We can talk about, of course, the, the, you know, the, this,
- 22:53Speaker 2: the horror machine of this and like the fascistic machine
- 22:55Speaker 2: of it and all of that. But then just on
- 22:57Speaker 2: the base level, like on a personal psychological level, like
- 23:01Speaker 2: you've lost all intimacy with yourself. And like that's the
- 23:05Speaker 2: crisis of it. It's just so devastating. And once you
- 23:08Speaker 2: get a little bit of that intimacy, you're like, All right. No,
- 23:11Speaker 2: this is actually, this is really medicinal. I mean, this
- 23:14Speaker 2: is why I love talking to you.
- 23:15Speaker 1: You can, we can go deep end so fast and
- 23:17Speaker 1: then you also have jokes.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Okay. Me?
- 23:23Speaker 1: Another thing that chilled me to the bone and made
- 23:25Speaker 1: me laugh out loud while.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I was listening to the, your special on my phone.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I watched it on my phone. I'm so sorry.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Is the idea about how men say they want to
- 23:37Speaker 1: be with funny women, but they hate funny women.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Let's go there.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Honey, it is like it's giving me a flush right now, actually.
- 23:47Speaker 2: It was so funny. Now, the idea, the sentiment of like.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Funny women being a threat isn't necessarily a new one.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Right, of course.
- 23:57Speaker 2: But the way in which you.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Present this idea, which is, let me just for a
- 24:01Speaker 1: minute trouble this and present what men actually want.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. What do you think in your way that is?
- 24:10Speaker 1: Can we talk about that for a second? How did
- 24:12Speaker 1: you come up with this idea?
- 24:14Speaker 2: Just a lifetime of being funny? Well, I can actually
- 24:16Speaker 2: tell you. So there's this like central memory, which I've
- 24:20Speaker 2: been like a ham and a goof since I was
- 24:22Speaker 2: like a baby, right? But I remember, so I went
- 24:25Speaker 2: to an all-girls school and I'm strong. My girls are
- 24:28Speaker 2: going to single sex, okay? You got to separate. Did
- 24:30Speaker 2: you like single sex school? What do you think, sweetie?
- 24:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Free and then never free again. Graduated and was never free. Yeah. No, I... Like...
- 24:41Speaker 2: Thank God. And I started comedy. I did stand up
- 24:43Speaker 2: for the first time when I was 17 at my
- 24:45Speaker 2: high school.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I read this in the basement of your high school.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Yeah. So, but anyway, but so I was always, of course,
- 24:53Speaker 2: you know, the class clown, all of that. And then I,
- 24:55Speaker 2: one day after school, I was 14, 15, maybe 15
- 24:59Speaker 2: after school with really cool and like a cool guy,
- 25:02Speaker 2: like after school, there's like two cool guys in the
- 25:06Speaker 2: room drum kit listening to Neil Young Harvest like what's
- 25:08Speaker 2: this yeah it's pretty cool like doing that yeah with
- 25:11Speaker 2: my friend who's a gorgeous like PacSun model you know
- 25:14Speaker 2: like truly and she's over there and I'm here like
- 25:17Speaker 2: like talking to the guys yeah and this guy who
- 25:19Speaker 2: was like the really popular cool guy he was laughing
- 25:22Speaker 2: and he was like god you know you're really funny
- 25:23Speaker 2: I was like yeah he was like you should be
- 25:24Speaker 2: careful though guys don't like funny girls because it reminds
- 25:26Speaker 2: them too much of other guys I remember I was
- 25:32Speaker 2: leaning against the wall. I was sitting on the bed
- 25:34Speaker 2: like this, leaning against the wall. And it was like,
- 25:36Speaker 2: by the way, thank you for the truth and the honesty.
- 25:38Speaker 3: There it is.
- 25:39Speaker 2: I was going to say, that's an unbelievable gift. There
- 25:41Speaker 2: it is. There it is. And.
- 25:43Speaker 3: He.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Was not wrong. I heard it. It went in.
- 25:47Speaker 3: And I went.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to carry this weight for the rest
- 25:51Speaker 2: of my life. And it was like, it's really. So, yeah,
- 25:55Speaker 2: I've been kind of like teasing that out. Yes.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Well, because also there's the bigger thing also behind it
- 26:03Speaker 1: is there's obviously like to be.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Funny is to be a little embarrassing. And men hate
- 26:10Speaker 2: being embarrassed. And to go like this. Everyone's like, why?
- 26:14Speaker 2: It's like, no, it's because you're going, it's like, that's
- 26:18Speaker 2: why they're not kissing you. But it is, it's like,
- 26:22Speaker 2: it's manifold. And by the way, I want to just
- 26:25Speaker 2: say this to clear the record. Of course, there are
- 26:27Speaker 2: guys who like, you know, of course, I've dated them.
- 26:30Speaker 2: You've dated, we've all, of course they exist. It's like,
- 26:35Speaker 2: this does exist.
- 26:37Speaker 3: It is true.
- 26:38Speaker 2: It's like, if you're, doing comedy, it's a historically masculine
- 26:42Speaker 2: role in society, whatever. it just creates this rupture. It's
- 26:47Speaker 2: like a weird gender performance thing that people are like, oh. Yes, rupture,
- 26:52Speaker 2: exactly right. A divine rupture, I might argue. A divine rupture.
- 26:55Speaker 2: One that's needed in our culture.
- 26:57Speaker 1: There's people who were voted class clown women, and in
- 27:00Speaker 1: my school, the class clowns that were women were like
- 27:03Speaker 1: bad girls.
- 27:04Speaker 2: You know what's funny? So I was a good girl
- 27:07Speaker 2: in the sense that I slept at the foot of
- 27:08Speaker 2: my parents' bed my entire life. Emotionally, I was at
- 27:11Speaker 2: the foot. And so... I was like a good girl,
- 27:15Speaker 2: like loved school, loved my friends, was like teacher, teacher,
- 27:18Speaker 2: you know, like I, you know. But I did have
- 27:22Speaker 2: a little bit of like the mischievous, like, okay, I,
- 27:26Speaker 2: so a bit of a prankster, benevolent pranks, never hurt anyone.
- 27:30Speaker 2: But I'm recalling live, which is amazing because on the
- 27:32Speaker 2: drive here I go, what are the stories? What's my life?
- 27:34Speaker 2: And there's nothing. And then I'm like, it's coming up.
- 27:35Speaker 3: It's happening.
- 27:36Speaker 2: I'm having memories. Okay. So like something that I used
- 27:39Speaker 2: to do was, You know, like the big drop down.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I could be arrested for this, actually. The big drop
- 27:44Speaker 2: down maps, like at School of the World in America.
- 27:47Speaker 2: So my little thing that I did is like, I'm
- 27:50Speaker 2: going to steal those for my bedroom. So I would
- 27:53Speaker 2: jump up, unscrew them, and walk out. And if you're walking,
- 27:57Speaker 2: if you're 16 and you're walking with the map of
- 28:00Speaker 2: the world out of the class, they go, oh, she's
- 28:03Speaker 2: supposed to do that, obviously. Someone asked her to move
- 28:06Speaker 2: that to the basement or whatever.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:08Speaker 2: So I really got my rocks off doing that. And
- 28:12Speaker 2: I do have a bit of a klepto. I've squashed it.
- 28:15Speaker 2: I also have a bit of a klepto. Well, I mean,
- 28:17Speaker 2: women and stealing and kleptomania is very interesting. Yeah. Because
- 28:22Speaker 2: in a world we feel like, you know, we've been
- 28:24Speaker 2: stolen from.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I love what you've said about makeup, how you feel
- 28:27Speaker 1: that women should be able to steal.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Safely and from big, you know, not mom paws, but
- 28:31Speaker 2: from the big guys. Take a little blush. It's fine.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:34Speaker 2: We deserve it. You're owed that blush. Because the blush
- 28:37Speaker 2: is mandatory.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:39Speaker 2: And nobody's paying for it. The government is not paying
- 28:41Speaker 2: for our blush. Tampons and blush. That should be free.
- 28:47Speaker 2: And then you also speak about the difference between dating
- 28:52Speaker 2: men and dating women. Because in the special, you... Congratulations.
- 28:57Speaker 2: You are gay. Now. Congrats. Bye, Amy. Confuse, Amy.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Bye.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Okay, I say gay as a shorthand because a lot
- 29:08Speaker 2: of people now, you know, bisexual, you know, bisexual femme
- 29:11Speaker 2: walks in, they go, oh, what, you kissed a girl
- 29:13Speaker 2: in the eighth grade, right? I'm going, no, I'm living
- 29:15Speaker 2: that life, actually.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:17Speaker 2: I mean, this is so funny because I talk about
- 29:18Speaker 2: something special. Like, I'm genuinely obsessed with sexuality, my sexuality.
- 29:24Speaker 2: And it's like. I also think there's this, like, I
- 29:27Speaker 2: grew up with this narrative of like, if you, you know,
- 29:30Speaker 2: come out later in life, it's because you had this
- 29:31Speaker 2: secret and you were like jerking off in private. And
- 29:33Speaker 2: you were like, no, no, no. You know what I mean?
- 29:35Speaker 2: It's like, that's not what my life was at all. Yes. Like,
- 29:38Speaker 2: I just was like, always with Matt. I fell in
- 29:40Speaker 2: love with a woman this like other like room opened
- 29:42Speaker 2: and I was like oh yes and then of course
- 29:44Speaker 2: and then I reflect back and I go oh my
- 29:46Speaker 2: god and so then I can be like whoa wait
- 29:48Speaker 2: so was it always I was like my obsession with
- 29:50Speaker 2: my pd teacher and you know fourth grade I'm like
- 29:52Speaker 2: what's that she was gay yeah they all were no
- 29:57Speaker 2: but like i go back and and so but i
- 29:59Speaker 2: guess i'm less interested in like locking in to a
- 30:03Speaker 2: certain category mostly because i think what's interesting is like
- 30:06Speaker 2: failing and what's funny is like failing within those categories
- 30:09Speaker 2: like i'm a failed straight woman for sure yes but
- 30:12Speaker 2: i'm still like i love the mall and i love
- 30:15Speaker 2: the beautiful you know like it's like like So what?
- 30:20Speaker 2: But then, but, but like, I'm also like a failed
- 30:23Speaker 2: gay woman.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Right.
- 30:25Speaker 1: If I may, the thing you said, which I have
- 30:27Speaker 1: never heard articulated, which, and that's why it was so
- 30:30Speaker 1: incredible because you're, you're, because you've kind of lived in
- 30:34Speaker 1: both worlds.
- 30:35Speaker 2: It's hot. It's hot. Right. Because you've lived in both worlds.
- 30:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:41Speaker 1: The perspective of from kind of being like on the
- 30:44Speaker 1: other side, looking almost like back at what was like
- 30:48Speaker 1: a way of living and the realization that you came to,
- 30:52Speaker 1: which is just, again, the comedic realization, but like all
- 30:55Speaker 1: of your stuff steeped in such truth is that heterosexual
- 31:00Speaker 1: relationships between men and women kind of are often helpful
- 31:04Speaker 1: to women who don't want to be seen, right?
- 31:07Speaker 2: And it is. There it is.
- 31:10Speaker 3: It is.
- 31:11Speaker 2: That's what fascinated me because I was like, and by
- 31:14Speaker 2: the way, I've had beautiful relationships with men, but it's like,
- 31:18Speaker 2: it's really fascinating to, I did when I kind of
- 31:21Speaker 2: started to like be in like gay relationships, I was like, oh, like, are,
- 31:28Speaker 2: I truly was like, okay, are all women, are women,
- 31:32Speaker 2: I believe that straight women exist, right? but is that
- 31:36Speaker 2: also listening? Kate made a face, but, and I, and
- 31:39Speaker 2: I was like, but is that also just their way
- 31:41Speaker 2: of being left alone in a way? And I was like,
- 31:43Speaker 2: and there's validity to that. And, and like, obviously I'm
- 31:46Speaker 2: also speaking like everyone relax. Okay. I know there's straight
- 31:49Speaker 2: people that are in love and they're, you know, screaming, laughing, whatever, but,
- 31:54Speaker 2: but there is, there is this inherent, um, distance, um,
- 31:58Speaker 2: there's always distance between people, even in queer relationships, of course.
- 32:01Speaker 2: But there is this like, there's this deep distance between
- 32:05Speaker 2: men and women. And I am also, I think it's
- 32:08Speaker 2: hard when you're a comedian, when you're a class clown,
- 32:10Speaker 2: when you're an actor, I can really love the performance
- 32:14Speaker 2: of being of femininity and God bless. And I'm attracted
- 32:17Speaker 2: to masculinity. I love that performance. So I think there's something,
- 32:20Speaker 2: there's something that is always strange when it's only when
- 32:22Speaker 2: people don't know they're performing that it starts to get
- 32:25Speaker 2: scary sometimes. That's exactly right.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Like it was one of my questions I wanted to
- 32:28Speaker 1: ask you, which is you're very good at this.
- 32:30Speaker 2: And we work with a lot of people that are.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Good at this, which is we can mirror what people
- 32:35Speaker 1: want us to be like, or like we can just
- 32:37Speaker 1: get in there and just be like, I'm this person.
- 32:40Speaker 1: And the question for you is like, I think the
- 32:43Speaker 1: part of like growing up and figuring yourself out is
- 32:46Speaker 1: knowing like that's actually expensive.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Like it takes something. Oh yeah. Oh, the way that
- 32:51Speaker 2: the full performances I'm doing in case someone sees, I
- 32:55Speaker 2: was just talking about this on my podcast, Poog, but
- 32:57Speaker 2: like airplanes are really places where these performances and gender
- 33:00Speaker 2: really comes, comes pronounced. So like the other day I
- 33:03Speaker 2: was getting onto a plane and I had a, a
- 33:05Speaker 2: carry on luggage to put overhead and there was a
- 33:07Speaker 2: guy right opposite. And, and I kind of did this
- 33:10Speaker 2: thing and he was like, Oh, like, do you want
- 33:11Speaker 2: help with that?
- 33:11Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 33:12Speaker 2: I was like, Yeah, do mine.
- 33:13Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 33:14Speaker 2: You know, whatever. And then he lifted it up. And
- 33:16Speaker 2: then I said to him, I don't know why I go,
- 33:18Speaker 2: I have a shoulder thing I'm trying to not aggravate.
- 33:20Speaker 2: And you made that up. So yeah, completely fake. And
- 33:23Speaker 2: then I found myself going, oh shit, now I have
- 33:26Speaker 2: to kind of like do this shoulder injury to myself.
- 33:29Speaker 2: I had another bag, a lighter bag to lift up.
- 33:32Speaker 2: And so I kind of lifted it up, but in
- 33:34Speaker 2: kind of like a, like I tried to overcompensate, you know?
- 33:36Speaker 2: And by the way, he very well is buried in
- 33:39Speaker 2: a book. He's not even looking. But I'm locked into
- 33:41Speaker 2: the performance lest he glance over. And then when we
- 33:44Speaker 2: landed six hours later, I go, time to get the
- 33:47Speaker 2: show back on the road. And then I was doing
- 33:49Speaker 2: kind of, you know, kind of.
- 33:52Speaker 3: For who?
- 33:53Speaker 2: For who, Amy? Who is watching?
- 33:56Speaker 4: I know.
- 33:56Speaker 2: The times you kind of think they're watching. Well, you
- 33:59Speaker 2: know who's watching? I'm watching.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Like that's the thing is like the idea that like
- 34:05Speaker 1: who we, who are we? Like what self is the
- 34:08Speaker 1: real self is a nonstop delightful journey for me.
- 34:13Speaker 2: It's absolutely endless. And it's like, this is, and this
- 34:16Speaker 2: is where also sex. Sorry, I said it. Someone has to.
- 34:20Speaker 2: First time it's been mentioned here. It's like, Like, and
- 34:23Speaker 2: that's why I think, honestly, class clowns, and this is
- 34:25Speaker 2: where it can get hard, funny on funny, two class
- 34:28Speaker 2: clowns in bed, it can get complicated. You're right. Like,
- 34:32Speaker 2: that actually sounds like, oh, God, I don't know.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:35Speaker 2: You kind of need someone to go, snap the, like, no.
- 34:37Speaker 2: You need someone to be like, fuck. Like, unselfconsciously. Yes. Like,
- 34:43Speaker 2: because I do, it's complicated.
- 34:45Speaker 1: I'm obsessed with your relationship to your own body on
- 34:48Speaker 1: stage because, like, to be looked at is already so intense.
- 34:52Speaker 1: And the way you use your body to like ground
- 34:55Speaker 1: yourself in performance is so interesting for me to watch.
- 35:00Speaker 2: You like, like a dancer.
- 35:02Speaker 1: I can feel the way that you, when, I don't know,
- 35:06Speaker 1: when it feels like you regulate everything. your thoughts or
- 35:11Speaker 1: anxiety or emotions by the way you move. No, I'm laughing.
- 35:14Speaker 2: I love it because I've never heard, no one's ever
- 35:15Speaker 2: seen me before. So thank you. Being seen for the
- 35:17Speaker 2: first time live. But no, but it is actually, you're right.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I've never, no one's ever said that or put that,
- 35:24Speaker 2: no one's ever put this to me in these terms,
- 35:25Speaker 2: but it is how I self-regulate. Like there is like,
- 35:28Speaker 2: even like, it's like, it's like, that is, no, no,
- 35:32Speaker 2: you are correct. And like, I, you know, love physical comedians.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Like I, that's always what gets me. And like, I've
- 35:39Speaker 2: made crazy faces. I can't stop help, you know, but,
- 35:42Speaker 2: but that is how I get back inside my body.
- 35:44Speaker 3: I think.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Yeah. It made me think about my own stuff. It's like,
- 35:47Speaker 2: Oh God, no, but yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It made me think.
- 35:53Speaker 1: About like, Mike, I just did it now, like my
- 35:56Speaker 1: own laughing. Like I love to laugh and everyone's like,
- 35:59Speaker 1: I love to laugh and laughing is so good for us.
- 36:02Speaker 1: And also laughing for me is expelling anxiety. Like it
- 36:07Speaker 1: is a way to just like. get shake out whatever
- 36:10Speaker 1: is the feeling that i'm having and anytime dancing is
- 36:13Speaker 1: the same way for me but it takes me so
- 36:15Speaker 1: long to realize that that is why i'm doing something
- 36:18Speaker 1: because i think especially if you're like in the comedy
- 36:20Speaker 1: world or you're like a big thinker like you're you're
- 36:22Speaker 1: just like our brain we just i use i'm like
- 36:26Speaker 1: brain forward a lot and i have to remind myself
- 36:29Speaker 1: i have a body.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Oh yeah oh yeah this no no no.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Okay um anesthesia culture you talk about.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I talk about anesthesia culture. Look it up if
- 36:41Speaker 2: you have to. Educate yourself now. It's so funny, you guys. Fuck,
- 36:45Speaker 2: I can't give away the joke, but please watch.
- 36:50Speaker 3: It.
- 36:50Speaker 2: You talk about this.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Idea that when we're under and we come to, how
- 36:56Speaker 1: cocky the people are that we're awake are.
- 36:59Speaker 2: We can talk about it. Can we talk about it?
- 37:00Speaker 2: It's a throwaway moment and it's special, I guess you
- 37:02Speaker 2: could say. It's so funny. But I talk about... kind
- 37:05Speaker 2: of not enjoying going under anesthesia because I don't like
- 37:09Speaker 2: waking up and the idea that everyone in the room
- 37:13Speaker 2: is like laughing at you, that you've been asleep the
- 37:15Speaker 2: whole time. Like it's like if you're a performer, it's
- 37:17Speaker 2: like you have to go under to go off. I'm
- 37:22Speaker 2: sure you're like me where it's like, oh, I can
- 37:24Speaker 2: turn off. Of course. Comedians want to get serious. But
- 37:28Speaker 2: the only time you're free. By the way, I'm hamming
- 37:31Speaker 2: it up. As I was going under, I remember this.
- 37:35Speaker 2: My anesthesia, I'm like, God, you look like Griffin Dunn.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Why the first one?
- 37:39Speaker 3: I was....
- 37:42Speaker 2: Going so hard. Also, because if I'm nervous, if I'm
- 37:46Speaker 2: in a medical situation, so I have a lot of
- 37:48Speaker 2: medical anxiety. This is going to be the next special
- 37:50Speaker 2: because I just got like a completely unnecessary angiogram.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Oh, actually, I mean, we could talk about this forever
- 37:56Speaker 1: because I'm obsessed with this idea that we are now
- 37:59Speaker 1: giving ourselves. too much information that's making us very stressed.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Oh, of course.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Yes. And so you had an angiogram. I went a
- 38:07Speaker 2: little hard on my neck with a Haizu Instagram. Yeah.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Instagram advertised to me this neck massager.
- 38:12Speaker 3: I go, sure.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Bought it. Yes. And then I was going really, really hard.
- 38:16Speaker 2: And I go, oh, it's a little too hard there.
- 38:18Speaker 2: And then I start looking up and I go, oh, well, then,
- 38:20Speaker 2: you know, the veins, the arteries here, you want to
- 38:22Speaker 2: be really careful. I go, the arteries in the neck. Oh, God.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:25Speaker 2: And then I texted, yeah, texted my doctor. Um, and, um,
- 38:29Speaker 2: she really regrets the day she gave me that. And,
- 38:32Speaker 2: and she was like, I'm sure you're fine, whatever. But
- 38:34Speaker 2: I'm so, um, I have that kind of like sensation
- 38:37Speaker 2: anxiety and stuff that I was like, Oh, I think something.
- 38:40Speaker 2: So then I call Cedars and talk to the doctor
- 38:42Speaker 2: and they're like, we could, or you a CT scan.
- 38:45Speaker 2: I mean, if you want to get an NGO, I mean,
- 38:46Speaker 2: what's that going? They inject you with, you know, your
- 38:48Speaker 2: veins with um, die and the whole thing. And I go, well,
- 38:51Speaker 2: that's insane. So I'm putting it off, putting it off.
- 38:54Speaker 2: And then I go, I could do it next week.
- 38:56Speaker 2: So then I'm being wheeled into the room and everyone,
- 39:00Speaker 2: you know, they're taking, they do the tests and everyone's
- 39:03Speaker 2: kind of looking at me cause I'm by far the
- 39:04Speaker 2: youngest people in this. So I think people are kind
- 39:07Speaker 2: of going, poor woman, like what's going on with her.
- 39:09Speaker 2: And so I start going, it's probably nothing.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Went a little hard with the high zoo. Let's say. Yeah.
- 39:16Speaker 2: It's too much. Let's go to Kate as a child.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Okay.
- 39:29Speaker 2: I skipped the whole thing. kid thing.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you were born as an adult. Born 30. Were you,
- 39:36Speaker 2: as a little, little.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Kate, in L.A., in Los Angeles, artist parents?
- 39:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it was really hard. Yeah. The rough side of Santa.
- 39:47Speaker 3: Monica, as I say.
- 39:48Speaker 2: I was going to say, you were in Santa Monica.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Um, not in the industry. They're not in the industry.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Let's just get that. What kind of artists are they? Um,
- 39:54Speaker 2: so my dad works in metal collage. It was funny.
- 39:59Speaker 2: I was, this was a huge for me a few
- 40:00Speaker 2: years ago. There was like a New York magazine piece
- 40:02Speaker 2: about Nepo babies and they, and my face was in
- 40:05Speaker 2: it next to like, like Chalamet. I was like, I'm famous.
- 40:08Speaker 2: I'm like, what is this? And it was like daughter
- 40:10Speaker 2: of a sculptor. You know, I was like, trust me, doll.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Hasn't gotten me work. You know what I mean? And
- 40:15Speaker 2: then like my mom did prop design and she did
- 40:18Speaker 2: make the Stonehenge prop in Spinal Tap famously. So, and
- 40:23Speaker 2: that was also there cited as nepotism. And I go, Guys.
- 40:26Speaker 2: A little bit of a stretch. A little bit of
- 40:28Speaker 2: a stretch. Yeah. But my mom was a stay-at-home mom,
- 40:32Speaker 2: if we can even say that now, right? They're taking
- 40:34Speaker 2: that away. But, you know, a deeply creative person.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Did you grow up with artists around the house chatting
- 40:44Speaker 1: about art?
- 40:45Speaker 5: Yes.
- 40:46Speaker 2: That's all. I'm an only child. My parents' friends did
- 40:49Speaker 2: not have kids. So it really was like me at
- 40:53Speaker 2: the dining room table with the adults being like, All right.
- 40:55Speaker 2: So I mean, they say two. And I think that was,
- 40:56Speaker 2: you know, intensely informative. And did you feel like, I mean,
- 41:00Speaker 2: I'm sure you've spoken about it a lot.
- 41:01Speaker 1: You might have talked about it in your, in your specials,
- 41:04Speaker 1: but what is the only child dilemma?
- 41:08Speaker 2: What is like the best? Or is there one? Is
- 41:12Speaker 2: there one? Like what's the good and bad thing about
- 41:15Speaker 2: being an only child? I don't know. I mean, I
- 41:17Speaker 2: having siblings.
- 41:19Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I don't really like sharing my mommy. I don't think so, Amy.
- 41:24Speaker 2: Number one, please. Yeah. So sharing my mommy would have
- 41:28Speaker 2: been hard, but I think... You know, as you age,
- 41:31Speaker 2: you go, oh, it would be helpful. But then also you,
- 41:33Speaker 2: you never know what you're going to get. I mean,
- 41:35Speaker 2: people have siblings and it's like, they're helpful when, when
- 41:38Speaker 2: shit's falling apart. So, so I don't know.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Your sibling relationship is often the longest relationship in your life,
- 41:44Speaker 1: which I, and.
- 41:45Speaker 2: I was like, whoa, I read that. And I was like, wow.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Cause that is, they, you know, like don't complicate it
- 41:50Speaker 1: with sex.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Okay. Cause that's the thing. Don't shit where you eat guys.
- 41:56Speaker 2: If you could take away one thing from Kate.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Um, So you're like this like precocious kid in a
- 42:03Speaker 1: way where you, did you feel older than you were
- 42:05Speaker 1: when you were a kid?
- 42:06Speaker 2: But I think I'm watching, I think so much of
- 42:09Speaker 2: what I like through mimicry, like I remember like when
- 42:12Speaker 2: I saw Erin Brockovich, I started doing my homework in heels,
- 42:14Speaker 2: you know, like, like, like for real. And I was like, Yeah,
- 42:25Speaker 2: I'm into this.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Yes.
- 42:27Speaker 2: And so I think that like watching movies, watching people
- 42:31Speaker 2: like be smart or sound smart is kind of like... yeah,
- 42:35Speaker 2: I'm going to kind of just like take that.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Okay. And then you did some crazy early jobs. And
- 42:40Speaker 1: is it true that you were a voice actor in
- 42:42Speaker 1: Texas for a call-in radio show?
- 42:44Speaker 2: Oh my God. Is that true?
- 42:45Speaker 3: Okay.
- 42:45Speaker 2: What's that? I don't know where I got hooked up
- 42:47Speaker 2: with this, but it was a thing where you would
- 42:50Speaker 2: do like, so for call-in radio shows where they're like
- 42:53Speaker 2: morning radio, where they're like.
- 42:54Speaker 5: Yeah, so we got here, guy and a girl went
- 42:56Speaker 5: on a first date. The girl, let's just say she
- 42:59Speaker 5: doesn't have a face or whatever. So it's like these,
- 43:02Speaker 5: like these, and then, but they're being presented as real.
- 43:05Speaker 2: So I would play and they go like, we got, we, okay.
- 43:08Speaker 2: So we have, we have her on the line. She
- 43:09Speaker 2: has no idea that we're, that we're listening in. So
- 43:11Speaker 2: we're just going to call. So I would pretend to
- 43:13Speaker 2: be the person who's like, hello.
- 43:14Speaker 3: You know?
- 43:15Speaker 2: And, and I did, I think like one and yeah,
- 43:18Speaker 2: it was like, and then the, like the casting, whenever
- 43:22Speaker 2: it's like, she was like, you're good at this. She's like,
- 43:24Speaker 2: you're good at this. Because there was one where I
- 43:26Speaker 2: had to pretend to be crying. It's devastating. It was
- 43:28Speaker 2: like they're humiliating this woman on air. And I have
- 43:30Speaker 2: to be like, wait, what? I'm on the radio? No.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Like really sad. I mean, that was a send up.
- 43:36Speaker 3: Okay.
- 43:36Speaker 2: I was doing it where I was grounded. I was
- 43:37Speaker 2: Laura Linney with it. Yeah. Of course.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Of course.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Of course. Of course. But yeah, I did that a
- 43:42Speaker 2: few times. And I think I'd get paid. I mean,
- 43:44Speaker 2: I think I would get paid like 75 bucks or something.
- 43:47Speaker 2: I don't know. But it was horrible. I'd have to
- 43:49Speaker 2: wake up at like 4 a.m. Because the time difference.
- 43:51Speaker 2: They were going to call you. So they'd call me
- 43:52Speaker 2: and I'd wake up at a desk and be like,
- 43:54Speaker 2: oh my God, no. That's so interesting. And then I
- 43:59Speaker 2: slept through one. Oh, you missed your call. They were like,
- 44:03Speaker 2: we need you. Dallas Radio, 7 a.m. Who knows where
- 44:05Speaker 2: I was. I woke up. I saw the missed calls.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Fired. Never again. I get it.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Yeah, they got to be ready. They need to depend
- 44:12Speaker 2: on you because of the radio. Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:14Speaker 3: So I did that.
- 44:14Speaker 1: And they had to then on their side, they had
- 44:16Speaker 1: to improvise like, oh, we can't get.
- 44:17Speaker 2: A hold of her. They must have been furious. Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
- 44:21Speaker 1: I mean, there is hell hath no fury like a
- 44:23Speaker 1: radio DJ.
- 44:24Speaker 2: They have to, the segment suffers and they can never
- 44:26Speaker 2: bring you back.
- 44:27Speaker 1: And, you know, we cannot talk about like your early,
- 44:30Speaker 1: early career, like starting out without talking about John Early.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Speaking of early, because John Early and you, let's talk
- 44:39Speaker 1: about John for a second. Because the way you guys
- 44:43Speaker 1: interact together scratches a comedic itch for so many people.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Why do you think that is? What is it that-
- 44:51Speaker 2: Amazing sex. Yeah. Yes. When you can connect on that
- 44:56Speaker 2: somatic level with someone, it can't help but reflect in
- 45:01Speaker 2: the work. Yeah. John, you know, it's like, it is like,
- 45:06Speaker 2: you know, one of the great loves of my life,
- 45:08Speaker 2: John early, like we did, we are, we like met
- 45:11Speaker 2: in this very like whirlwind, like romantic way where it
- 45:14Speaker 2: was like, we met and then in a very lesbian fashion,
- 45:17Speaker 2: like we're inseparable. And he slept on my bed for
- 45:18Speaker 2: like three years. And I was like, why can't I
- 45:21Speaker 2: get a man? I was like, see, it's hard. It's
- 45:25Speaker 2: different for me.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 45:26Speaker 2: And John, we met, Yeah. We met on set of
- 45:31Speaker 2: a friend's short film and we had like, he'd messaged
- 45:35Speaker 2: me on Facebook or something and I was like, who's this?
- 45:38Speaker 2: And then I watched a video of his and I
- 45:39Speaker 2: was like, oh, he's really funny.
- 45:40Speaker 1: We were trying to break it down today because we're
- 45:42Speaker 1: such fans of your work alone, of course, and with John.
- 45:46Speaker 1: And with John, I'm not like the biggest, I get
- 45:49Speaker 1: a little stressed when people come at each other pretty hard.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Like in comedy, like I'm not a big roast fan.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Like But the way you two gently knife each other
- 46:01Speaker 1: in the stuff that you do is, like, fascinating to watch.
- 46:05Speaker 2: I think it's funny for us because, like, we don't... Similarly,
- 46:09Speaker 2: I don't want to be roasted or ever roast anyone. And, like,
- 46:13Speaker 2: John is, you know, like, from the South. And, like,
- 46:15Speaker 2: John's the last... Like, so I think our... Like, that's
- 46:18Speaker 2: a place for us to, like, go there.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Yes.
- 46:21Speaker 2: But very much behind this, like, character mask, of course.
- 46:25Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. Yeah. But.
- 46:27Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know why. It's funny because we are like,
- 46:31Speaker 2: there's been times or over the years we've been like,
- 46:34Speaker 2: but we're not mean. Like, like people are like, you
- 46:36Speaker 2: guys are vicious. Like, and it's like, no, it's not like,
- 46:38Speaker 2: that's not what it is. No, it's not. I mean,
- 46:41Speaker 2: I don't, I don't know exactly.
- 46:43Speaker 1: And it feels like there's like some border around it.
- 46:46Speaker 2: That's.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Surface level which is always so funny when people are
- 46:50Speaker 1: not acting the way they're feeling that's just like inherently funny.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Well i think that's exactly what it is and like
- 46:55Speaker 2: we just like the failed performance to say it again
- 46:57Speaker 2: like when people think that they're covering and they're not
- 47:00Speaker 2: and when people are using the social niceties to cover
- 47:04Speaker 2: like and like that is just heaven it's heaven me
- 47:07Speaker 2: too it's.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Like when someone is angry and they are like trying
- 47:12Speaker 1: to conduct a meeting or something is heaven yeah how
- 47:14Speaker 1: are you with conflict what's your conflict style What.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Do you mean? Sorry, say the word again. Conflict? Sorry,
- 47:21Speaker 2: I missed it.
- 47:22Speaker 1: Like when something like that happens, do you get filled?
- 47:24Speaker 1: I get filled with a little bit of excitement.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Adrenaline. Oh, you mean like watching people fight? My favorite
- 47:31Speaker 2: thing in the world is screaming fire on the street,
- 47:34Speaker 2: safely watching from the window. That and my heart being
- 47:37Speaker 2: through my chest.
- 47:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 47:40Speaker 1: Do you have a like direct conflict style? Do you
- 47:43Speaker 1: feel like when you're angry about something, what does it
- 47:46Speaker 1: look like?
- 47:46Speaker 3: Um.
- 47:48Speaker 2: It's a really interesting question that my therapist should be
- 47:50Speaker 2: asking me, and she's not. So there's an issue there
- 47:53Speaker 2: that we'll explore later. You should yell at her. Maybe
- 47:57Speaker 2: I withdraw. I'm wondering. I'm probably going to go with withdraw.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Gun to my head, withdraw. Withdraw for a hundred. No,
- 48:07Speaker 2: I think I've talked about it a lot, so I
- 48:10Speaker 2: won't get into it, but I had a really upsetting
- 48:11Speaker 2: incident with a chimney sweep a couple years ago. I'll
- 48:16Speaker 2: just say quickly. Just say quickly. He came into my home.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Came into my home doing a chimney sweep. I go,
- 48:22Speaker 2: I go, oh, he has like no drop cloths. I go, okay,
- 48:24Speaker 2: so now I'm getting into the forensic details. But I
- 48:26Speaker 2: was like, white couch, white thing. I just moved in.
- 48:28Speaker 2: I go, oh, do you have like, and this is funny.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Do you have like drop cloths or anything? And he goes,
- 48:33Speaker 2: and he kind of like laughs. He's like, I'm fine.
- 48:35Speaker 2: And I go, okay, he's a chimney sweep. I'm going
- 48:37Speaker 2: to come here. He knows how to do his job.
- 48:39Speaker 2: God forbid. So I go, okay, I'm going to let you.
- 48:41Speaker 2: I go into, I come back.
- 48:44Speaker 3: Amy.
- 48:45Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Sit on the white couch. Sit on the curtains. In
- 48:48Speaker 2: the hallway, I go like this. And I'm like, there's
- 48:55Speaker 2: soot in the home. And he kind of did this thing.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Gaslight city. By the way, and here's where I paid.
- 49:03Speaker 2: So not full, because I'm in there in the kitchen thing.
- 49:06Speaker 2: And then I go, I can't pay full price. Gets
- 49:07Speaker 2: the boss on the phone, this whole thing. He goes,
- 49:09Speaker 2: maybe your house was dirty.
- 49:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Sweetie, say it again. Maybe your house was dirty. Yeah.
- 49:15Speaker 1: And you're basically being held hostage, too. Like, you have
- 49:18Speaker 1: to pay because you want him out of your house.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I want the chimney sweep gone. And it's so
- 49:22Speaker 2: sad because I had an amazing chimney sweep years before
- 49:25Speaker 2: and I couldn't find his number. And he had drop
- 49:27Speaker 2: claws and he had respect. Yes. And so, but I'll
- 49:31Speaker 2: just say that night went to bed, literally permanent TMJ,
- 49:34Speaker 2: like one night of clenching from the chimney sweep and
- 49:36Speaker 2: years later, so I should be going to court. and
- 49:39Speaker 2: the tension on this jaw it's brought the face down
- 49:42Speaker 2: okay so the tension on this side so i'm losing
- 49:44Speaker 2: work okay from that so the chip so one night
- 49:47Speaker 2: so that wasn't that was an experience where i could
- 49:50Speaker 2: have gone harder in the moment i didn't because i
- 49:52Speaker 2: was just like kind of panicked and sad okay but.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Let's break down you also didn't go harder in the
- 49:57Speaker 1: moment because you've got somebody in your house yeah totally
- 49:59Speaker 1: it's not a safe situation man it's a man in
- 50:01Speaker 1: your house for real yeah And also I.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Wanted a husband. I go, Eric, you know, like that's
- 50:06Speaker 2: when you, that's when you want that. You want to
- 50:09Speaker 2: call for Eric. Eric comes down from his study and
- 50:12Speaker 2: he's like, Hey man. Yeah, no, exactly. And then I
- 50:15Speaker 2: go and I go, yeah. And I walk away. You
- 50:17Speaker 2: walk away. They get to have it out.
- 50:18Speaker 1: And you can hear Eric yelling a little bit and
- 50:21Speaker 1: you get like a little, Eric's getting a BJ tonight.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:25Speaker 2: So that dynamic's fun. And I get that.
- 50:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:29Speaker 1: Okay, so John Early, we spoke to him before this
- 50:32Speaker 1: podcast because we always speak to somebody who knows our guests.
- 50:35Speaker 1: And John gave us some amazing questions for you.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Okay. So here we go. John wants
- 50:42Speaker 2: to know a couple of things.
- 50:43Speaker 3: Okay.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Do you miss Paris?
- 50:47Speaker 4: Yes.
- 50:50Speaker 3: Okay.
- 50:51Speaker 2: John wants to know, do you think you're funny? Yes. Okay.
- 50:57Speaker 2: John wants to know, how are the kids? Amazing.
- 51:03Speaker 3: Congrats.
- 51:05Speaker 2: It's just, you know. Yeah. Yeah. They're at a really
- 51:11Speaker 2: fun age. Yeah. Cool. What age is that? Just right
- 51:16Speaker 2: around that area where you go. They're them, but they're you.
- 51:21Speaker 2: But you do know how old they are, yeah? Yeah.
- 51:23Speaker 3: Four-ish.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Four-ish, yeah. John wants to know, so are you gay
- 51:28Speaker 2: or what? John will do that to me. It's so funny.
- 51:33Speaker 2: He'll text me out of nowhere and go, are you gay?
- 51:35Speaker 3: Bye.
- 51:35Speaker 2: What is.
- 51:38Speaker 4: It?
- 51:38Speaker 2: Or my favorite thing, I'll be doing a show and
- 51:41Speaker 2: John will be like, just remember that. I go, the
- 51:45Speaker 2: show is broken because you are broken. It's really funny.
- 51:51Speaker 1: To me, the love language of comedy people is my
- 51:55Speaker 1: favorite thing in the world.
- 51:56Speaker 2: He will leave a voicemail for me and he'll be
- 51:58Speaker 2: like it's just so like like like yesterday so embarrassed
- 52:02Speaker 2: she's she's promoting her special and she's doing these press
- 52:05Speaker 2: appearances and it's just like oh my god meanwhile you
- 52:09Speaker 2: know HBO they're not going to release it I've already
- 52:11Speaker 2: been on the phone with them they're holding it back
- 52:13Speaker 2: and there she's trotting out in her little outfits and
- 52:16Speaker 2: I'll be like oh my god fuck fuck fuck fuck
- 52:21Speaker 2: he pretends he's calling someone else or he pretends he's
- 52:25Speaker 2: accidentally leaving it on my machine oh my.
- 52:28Speaker 1: God really funny that to me feel it makes me
- 52:30Speaker 1: feel so safe and yeah yeah it's really sweet and
- 52:34Speaker 1: then shoes on or off off always in the home
- 52:39Speaker 1: off so when someone comes to your.
- 52:41Speaker 2: Home Do you say, please take your shoes off? So
- 52:46Speaker 2: I have a small home, to quote the handyman who
- 52:49Speaker 2: came to the house when I first moved in. And
- 52:51Speaker 2: this is a direct quote. Never have I seen a
- 52:54Speaker 2: house so small. And that was the exact language used.
- 52:58Speaker 2: I go, it's not that small. I don't have Eric.
- 53:02Speaker 2: I don't have a rich husband. And then I'll just
- 53:06Speaker 2: say a couple of days later, he returned and he goes,
- 53:08Speaker 2: do you have many more things to move into this
- 53:10Speaker 2: very small home? And by the way, living room, there
- 53:13Speaker 2: was no couch. There was nothing. I go, well, yeah,
- 53:15Speaker 2: I have to bring in the furniture. And I go,
- 53:17Speaker 2: but there's not that much. And he goes, that's good
- 53:19Speaker 2: because it's so small. So because the house is small,
- 53:23Speaker 2: I don't have a grand foyer. You know, there's no
- 53:25Speaker 2: room for a shoe rack. So we kind of have
- 53:27Speaker 2: like a horrifying pile, a little pile by the front door.
- 53:29Speaker 2: So it depends. Depending on, I'll kind of be like,
- 53:33Speaker 2: let's take them off.
- 53:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:34Speaker 2: If I just, you know. Do you put on a
- 53:36Speaker 2: house slipper? Oh, yeah. I have multiple house slippers. This
- 53:40Speaker 2: is what I, thank you.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Another reason why I love you, Kate, is because I
- 53:44Speaker 1: know you love.
- 53:45Speaker 2: Things and you really.
- 53:46Speaker 1: And I would say that one of the things that's
- 53:49Speaker 1: so amazing about you and Jacqueline and Poog, which is
- 53:52Speaker 1: an incredible podcast and congrats on that, the success of that,
- 53:56Speaker 1: because it's so funny and good. And you guys, for
- 53:59Speaker 1: people that don't know, Poog, like, deep dives into products
- 54:03Speaker 1: in a way, much like how we're talking today, where
- 54:06Speaker 1: Kate and Jacqueline Novak, a super talented writer, performer, they, like,
- 54:13Speaker 1: talk about a red light mask and then somehow get
- 54:16Speaker 1: to Dante's Inferno very fast.
- 54:18Speaker 2: It's very high meets low. Yes. And it's very, you know,
- 54:21Speaker 2: we started Poog in COVID.
- 54:22Speaker 3: Yes.
- 54:23Speaker 2: And really kind of started as a way, Poog, goop backwards,
- 54:26Speaker 2: get it?
- 54:27Speaker 3: Okay.
- 54:27Speaker 2: So, and kind of as like a wellness beauty podcast,
- 54:31Speaker 2: but really also just a way that we could get
- 54:33Speaker 2: free stuff, which has been incredible. And so we were like,
- 54:36Speaker 2: people will send us these products and then, you know, yeah. So, but, but,
- 54:39Speaker 2: and also kind of this idea of like searching for
- 54:42Speaker 2: the right product and that the, and there's this misconception
- 54:46Speaker 2: that you want to find the right product. You actually don't,
- 54:48Speaker 2: you want to engage in the, in the search forever.
- 54:50Speaker 2: The search is kind of, you know, the ego loves
- 54:52Speaker 2: to search and never to find, and we'll just let
- 54:54Speaker 2: that sit.
- 54:55Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Three, two, one. And so that constant manic belief that
- 55:01Speaker 2: there is this product out there, this person out there,
- 55:04Speaker 2: this thing out there, and then you're going to arrive
- 55:06Speaker 2: and you're going to be whole and you're going to
- 55:07Speaker 2: be healed. You're going to be beautiful. It's like we
- 55:08Speaker 2: on some level, we know that's not coming, but it's
- 55:10Speaker 2: really fun to go and try the serum. I think
- 55:13Speaker 2: it's doing something and to have fun, a new lipstick
- 55:15Speaker 2: and like there's pleasure in that.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Yes. And so on Poog, you guys talk about things
- 55:20Speaker 1: and I love listening to it because I Like you,
- 55:23Speaker 1: I am in the pursuit for like the platonic best
- 55:26Speaker 1: thing for the thing. Like as if my life is
- 55:28Speaker 1: going to get smaller and simpler if I just get
- 55:31Speaker 1: the right thing. But I do want to know what
- 55:33Speaker 1: shoe you bought for your house shoe.
- 55:36Speaker 2: So this is kind of cheating because it is, it
- 55:39Speaker 2: was a gift. Okay. But- I'm going to go with
- 55:42Speaker 2: a classic UGG. Sorry, UGG. There's so many different kinds
- 55:46Speaker 2: of slippers. And I actually, I paid out of pocket.
- 55:49Speaker 2: I purchased the ultra mini boot that's like under the
- 55:54Speaker 2: ankle almost. Okay. Yes.
- 55:56Speaker 1: Um, Does it have a fur lining?
- 55:59Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay. So, by the way, even today, 140 degrees,
- 56:02Speaker 2: getting into the boot first thing.
- 56:04Speaker 4: You are.
- 56:04Speaker 2: You have to keep your feet warm.
- 56:06Speaker 1: How do you feel about air conditioning? Are you an
- 56:08Speaker 1: AC person?
- 56:09Speaker 2: Do you keep it cool? Blast it down.
- 56:11Speaker 3: Me too.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:13Speaker 2: I mean, I really... Last night, I was... Because I
- 56:15Speaker 2: sleep naked. Guys, this isn't about that. I'm here to
- 56:19Speaker 2: talk about my work.
- 56:21Speaker 3: But.
- 56:22Speaker 2: And I want an eight sleep. And hi, I'm here
- 56:25Speaker 2: on this podcast. Hey, eight sleep? Yeah. Now's the time.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Send them now. If this doesn't get me an eight sleep,
- 56:35Speaker 2: if this doesn't get.
- 56:37Speaker 1: Me an eight sleep, please get Kate an eight sleep.
- 56:40Speaker 1: And so I'm going to end our talk today.
- 56:43Speaker 2: No, no, no. I know, I know. You have a
- 56:47Speaker 2: lot of incredible takes on things.
- 56:49Speaker 3: Oh.
- 56:50Speaker 1: So I want to get your thoughts on things. They
- 56:52Speaker 1: don't have to be funny. They can be whatever.
- 56:53Speaker 2: It can be whatever you want. The moon.
- 56:56Speaker 3: Fake.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Like, again? Yeah, every night. Every night. I just want
- 57:06Speaker 2: to see something different from it.
- 57:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:10Speaker 2: I mean, it does change every night. But in the
- 57:12Speaker 2: same way. Do you know what I mean? People change
- 57:15Speaker 2: in the same way. You go, now you're doing this thing,
- 57:16Speaker 2: now you're doing that thing. You're concealing this part, you're
- 57:18Speaker 2: concealing that part. Oh no, I'm right here in the open. No,
- 57:21Speaker 2: you're not because you'll be gone tomorrow. Psychics. I believe
- 57:24Speaker 2: there are gifted psychics. People are tapped in. Do you
- 57:27Speaker 2: believe you have any psychic abilities?
- 57:29Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 57:35Speaker 2: You do? For real? Yes, Amy. Have you ever predicted anything? Yes.
- 57:40Speaker 3: What?
- 57:42Speaker 2: Can't get into it.
- 57:42Speaker 1: Okay.
- 57:43Speaker 2: No, I think we all, you know, psychologically, we all
- 57:46Speaker 2: have those. I don't feel like I have psychic abilities.
- 57:48Speaker 2: I have stuff. I can read.
- 57:50Speaker 1: People and I can, I feel like I'm pretty good
- 57:52Speaker 1: at noticing energies, but I don't feel like I have
- 57:55Speaker 1: a psychic ability to figure that out.
- 57:58Speaker 2: I've had some interesting instances, but again, I'm on my
- 58:03Speaker 2: phone all day, so I'm blocking all of that out. Yeah, okay, good.
- 58:06Speaker 2: What about ghosts? Have you seen any ever?
- 58:10Speaker 3: Yes.
- 58:10Speaker 4: Yes.
- 58:12Speaker 2: You've talked to ghosts. So people, you look at me,
- 58:14Speaker 2: long hair, you know, oh, who's this, you know, witchy,
- 58:18Speaker 2: psychic ghost. I'm actually typically not, I don't, I don't
- 58:22Speaker 2: like karaoke, for example. A lot of people think things
- 58:25Speaker 2: about me, okay? So, and I.
- 58:31Speaker 2: I was told not to talk about it because then
- 58:33Speaker 2: they take it as a way to kind of come in.
- 58:35Speaker 2: But I swear to God, last couple of years, I'm
- 58:38Speaker 2: seeing ghosts. You've been seeing some ghosts.
- 58:40Speaker 1: You have to talk to my friend Rachel Dratch because
- 58:42Speaker 1: she is really into woo-woo and she kind of collects
- 58:45Speaker 1: woo-woo stories.
- 58:47Speaker 2: I've always been scared of ghosts. And then the last
- 58:51Speaker 2: couple of years, I've seen a few. And actually, some
- 58:57Speaker 2: situations I would think would really scare me, no fear whatsoever,
- 58:59Speaker 2: completely fine. I've had two upsetting experiences that really freaked
- 59:03Speaker 2: me out. Okay, that's not so i kind of went
- 59:05Speaker 2: to someone and went let's close the door um god.
- 59:08Speaker 1: I wish i could see a ghost i have not
- 59:10Speaker 1: seen a ghost and i i just they just do
- 59:12Speaker 1: not fuck with me ghosts i.
- 59:15Speaker 2: You don't want it i don't think maybe i don't
- 59:16Speaker 2: know i don't know some you know some people i
- 59:19Speaker 2: would like to come through and i'm interested in that
- 59:21Speaker 2: but yeah maybe not but okay once you've had a
- 59:23Speaker 2: couple bad ones you go yeah i'll just say i've
- 59:27Speaker 2: got some special uh figurines on my nightstand lately some
- 59:31Speaker 2: crystals i was given some figurines okay because i go
- 59:34Speaker 2: i don't want to.
- 59:35Speaker 1: See that one anymore yeah and they were like for 29.99
- 59:38Speaker 1: i can give you i know.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Truly the amount of people friends i've had that have
- 59:42Speaker 2: been like and she said that for 500 she could
- 59:44Speaker 2: lift the curse i'm.
- 59:45Speaker 1: Like oh no i mean people they really because let's
- 59:47Speaker 1: lift the curse for free how about we try that
- 59:49Speaker 1: all curses.
- 59:50Speaker 2: Can and should be Um, Los Angeles. I'm from LA.
- 59:56Speaker 2: I lived in New York for 10 years. I'm there
- 59:58Speaker 2: all the time, but I think the, um, you know,
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: people love to talk shit on LA and even this conversation,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: even this feels cliche when I'm, when I'm dropping into, right.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: I've kind of like people I talk about, but I, um,
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: I love Los Angeles, you know, she can be a
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: cruel mistress, but to me it's, it's Hollywood, it's dreams, it's, it's,
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: it's images, it's lizards, it's cactus, it's a, it's a
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: palm tree half on fire.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: It's, it's all of it.
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: Yeah. There's something brutally solitary about Los Angeles. I love
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: New York so much. So many times I'd go back
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: to New York and I'm like, I've ruined my life
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: by not living here. I'd be a better artist. I'd
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: be more connected to, to people, to strangers. Like I, I,
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: I really long for strangers and for those like interactions
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: that really feeds me on a deep level. And I,
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: I am sad that in LA it's harder to get
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: those interactions. Um, but I think, uh, I don't know.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: LA is, is it is, it isn't, it's strange.
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: And it can make you feel, I remember after living
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: in New York, coming back to LA and being like, well,
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: I've never felt uglier, more exposed, more alone, driving in
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: the car, looking in the mirror. Like, yeah. Like, You're like,
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: who is that? It's so bright. It's so bright. There's
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: nowhere to hide, and yet it only hides you.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: I don't know. You love her.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: You love her. Come on. Seeing those hills speckled with
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: homes lit up at night. Drive down Hollywood Boulevard. It's
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: a man with a machete outside the man's Chinese. I'm home.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: We're dreaming. We create the dreams, Amy. This town creates
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: the fantasies that drive the world. And what's making you laugh?
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: My last question to you.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Like, what do you do to laugh? And you can't
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: say you're friends.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Just go watch people fall down at the supermarket. What
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: makes me laugh is non-performers performing. Like, I've been to
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: a couple weddings, a couple, like, those kinds of environments
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: where someone who's not a performer is giving a speech.
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: That is exquisite.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: And let's talk through that because I know what you mean.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: And I bet you're the same as women, like our
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: mirror neurons.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: We don't want anyone to be humiliated. No, of course.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: Of course not. And it's sweet. You see people, it's
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: scary up there. I'm a performer. I'm scared up there. Yes.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: But when it's like a little bit awkward, but fun,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: but what makes you laugh? What's your perfect version of that?
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: I think what's so fascinating about wedding speeches is there's
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: like this template and people are like, like this is
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: something I've talked about with John. So classically, the bridesmaid speech,
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: you're the bride, right? You're this, you're funny, it's him,
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: it's him. It's listing things. And in the vows too,
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: it's usually, you're fine, you're fine, you're fine, and you're fine.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Whether we're having a ha, or having a ha, you're
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: always having a ha. It's like, so shocking. It's like
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: this rehearsed and there's a beauty in that. Like this
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: is the structure we can all fall into and collapse
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: into this familiar language and everyone knows exactly what's going
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: to happen. And, but, but it's like, that's funny. Like that, that, that's,
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: that's really, and again, the listing traits.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: It's always listing traits. It's so funny. You're goofy. You're smart.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: You're kind. And you're generous. Listing traits. We have to
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: go beyond the list. Yes. But breaking out of that
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: is wild. But I understand, too. I'm saying that. I'm
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: not admonishing the list. I get it. You're right. You
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: could hear that language. You could hear that rhythm. It's like,
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: it's really there.
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I totally, I love a wedding.
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: Love.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: If it's a bad wedding, I'm like, oh, I love it. Like,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: you know, if everyone, if there's like a clumsy speech
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: or people are stressed or the wrong person cries or
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: the ex is there and it's awkward, I'm like, oh
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: my God, what theater?
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: And if it's beautiful and full of love, I'm like, amazing.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: I love that too. I love a wedding. And I just,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: I love parties so much. And I'm very like planner.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: Like if I didn't, if I didn't do what I do,
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: I think I'd be like- Party planner? I've never, I've never, yeah, maybe. Wait,
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: tell me. Professor slash party planner. Okay, but what, parties
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: make me a little stressed. They're very unstructured. No, totally.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: I go, oh my God, the apps, like bring out
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: the apps now. You know, I was actually at a
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: wedding recently, nice one. App, broken glass, bleeding in my mouth.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: Ran to the bathroom. There's blood. I spit out in
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: the ceviche. There's glass. So I go back. I go in.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: I don't tell anyone I'm not going to ruin this wedding.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: Of course. I go into the kitchen, through the doors,
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: into the metal doors. I go, guys, the ceviche trays,
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: you got to pull them. You got to pull them.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: There's glass. You know, and I quietly.
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: Oh.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Quietly. You want to put out those fires. And I'll micromanage. Like,
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: I definitely can have a white knuckle grip. Like, I
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: love to have a dinner party or something.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: And I love to spend the days awake, you know,
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: the nights before. It's not as simple. The effortless host
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: is a lie. I think it's real. Some people actually
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: can do that.
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: But, like, I'm like. shaking yeah but there's things you
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: can't control you can control the party but guess what
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: over controlled party hell hell for everyone hell so that's
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: the thing you have to create the structure but you
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: have to let it to dissolve yeah yes.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: You might burn like something's gonna burn the like someone's
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: gonna get into a fight like wine will be spilled
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: a chimney.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: Sweep may show up yeah he might yeah he might
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: he might give you tmj but you keep going And.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: That is something, the second thing we want you to
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: take away from other than having sex with your sibling.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Don't do it. Guys, don't do it. Don't do it. Caperland.
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: I love you. Wait, I love you so much. You
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: are a hero to me. I have no trouble saying
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: that to you. And also truly going through a really
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: hard time recently. What did I pop on? Wet hot.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: They came together. Double feature. Cause I'm like, I need
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: something funny. I'm thinking, okay, funny movie. What's a funny movie? Oh,
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: that's funny. Nothing's coming up. And then I go, we're going,
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: we're going back to wet with wet hot lives in
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: my DNA and such a, I mean, you must've been
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: a teen when it came out. I don't remember when
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: I first saw it. I saw it later. Yeah. But, um, yeah,
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: it is the most beautiful and just, yeah.
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Thank you, Kate. I love, I love seeing you. And
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: that's just the tip. I'm not going to do your CV.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: We all know, but I love you. Thank you, Kate.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Thank you so much, Kate Berlant. That was so fun.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: I love talking to you and you're so funny and, um,
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: it's just.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: A joy to be around you. So, uh, Kate and
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: I talked about a lot of things.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: One of the things we talked about is how fun
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: it is to watch a awkward wedding speech. But I
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: just want to say for people that are right now
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: getting ready to give a speech, a wedding speech, just
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: a few tips. Here are my unsolicited tips, which start
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: with a joke and sincere. Don't do it the other
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: way around. Don't start sincere and then think that this
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: hilarious joke is going to kill. Start with a really nice,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: easy joke up front, maybe something about how you're nervous,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: something self-effacing, and then just get them at the end
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: by being very, very sincere. You can never go wrong
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: if you're sincere. You can go horribly wrong if you
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: say the wrong joke. So that would be my unsolicited advice.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: But congratulations on your wedding and congratulations on being the bridesmaid.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: And remember, take your speech and cut it in half
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: because it's going to go longer than you think. Thank
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: you so much for listening to Good Hang. Thanks for
