Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Gavin Grey: Europe Correspondent on the Swedish authorities accusing Iranian Intelligence of sending a hacked mass text
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Kevin Gray is a UK europe correspondent. Kevin Sweden is
- 0:03Speaker 1: upset with Iranian intelligence. What's going on?
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yes, you may remember the story about twelve months ago
- 0:12Speaker 2: when fifteen thousand texts were sent to different Swedes basically
- 0:18Speaker 2: saying that they wanted revenge against Quran burners. Now, what
- 0:23Speaker 2: had happened was that Sweden's government condemned a number of
- 0:28Speaker 2: people burning the Quran and police tried to ban them,
- 0:32Speaker 2: but the courts allowed the burning of Kuran in Sweden
- 0:37Speaker 2: under freedom of expression laws. Lots of Muslims were not happy. Indeed,
- 0:41Speaker 2: Sweden's embassy in Iraq was set alight by protesters. Then
- 0:45Speaker 2: all these texts started arriving in people's emails, on people's
- 0:49Speaker 2: phones rather saying that they should consider revenge against the
- 0:54Speaker 2: Qoran burners. Well, now, after all this work, Sweden's security
- 0:58Speaker 2: service SAPPO said these test was sent by the Iranian
- 1:01Speaker 2: intelligence service connected to the Revolutionary Guards and they had
- 1:07Speaker 2: basically managed it in some way to get hold of
- 1:09Speaker 2: the Swedish company's SMS service, takeover passwords, user names and
- 1:14Speaker 2: other tools before sending a message to private individuals. And
- 1:17Speaker 2: the message was quote those who insulted the Quran must
- 1:21Speaker 2: be punished for their work. Can the Swedes do anything
- 1:23Speaker 2: about it? No, because although they think they know who
- 1:26Speaker 2: is behind it, I'm afraid there is no extradition treaty,
- 1:29Speaker 2: so there won't be any punishment for those they suspect.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Gevin, we have a brief moment to talk about the
- 1:34Speaker 1: police in Switzerland making a couple of erasi in relation
- 1:37Speaker 1: to a suicide pod.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yes, very unusual. So this suicide pod is basically one
- 1:44Speaker 2: which allows people to operate it on their own and
- 1:48Speaker 2: end their own life without medical supervision. You basically step
- 1:52Speaker 2: into this pod and it will kill you. As I said,
- 1:55Speaker 2: without medical supervision, you can do it all on your own. Now,
- 1:58Speaker 2: Switzerland does allow our assisted dying, but there has been
- 2:02Speaker 2: a lot of debate about the Sarco pod. Indeed, some
- 2:05Speaker 2: say it's not safe. The design of it almost glamorizes suicide.
- 2:09Speaker 2: But now we learn there has been what we think
- 2:11Speaker 2: is the first suicide in a Sarco pod on the
- 2:14Speaker 2: border of Switzerland, and it is being said that could
- 2:19Speaker 2: be the very very first case of its kind. We're
- 2:22Speaker 2: not yet being told the identity of the person that's
- 2:24Speaker 2: believed to take in their own life.
- 2:26Speaker 1: All right, Gevin, thank you for that. Givin Gray are
- 2:28Speaker 1: UK europe correspondent.
