- 1:10SPEAKER_00: In prayer.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I am standing a little bit on a promise myself as we go forward.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: At least in hope of a promise.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: In 2 Kings, there's an account.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Actually, it's two accounts, but I count it as one full story of a woman that we call the Shunammite woman.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: We don't know her name.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: But I want to turn there because there's something in this that was just recently, in the past couple of weeks, just kind of opened up to me as far as a very specific illustration.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Now, I wanted to make very clear, I do not believe that the accounts of the Shunammite woman are necessarily a spiritual allegory.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: But I do want to illustrate that there is something that happens to the Shunammite woman that I believe speaks directly to us in not only the providential care of God, but also what we have in the church of God today.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: In his church and the acknowledgment of the finished work of Christ.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Now, the Shunammite woman is an interesting, there's going to be a little bit of reading, but I trust that it won't be too laborious.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: It's starting in 2 Kings chapter 4.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Now, Elisha is the prophet.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: We could go back and cover a little bit about that, but that's going to take time, so I don't want to take that time.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: But Elijah has already been called up by the whirlwind, and Elisha is the prophet in Israel.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Now he's going about his business.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: He's traveling to and fro.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And if we pick up in verse 8 of chapter 4, it says, And it fell on a day that Elisha passed to Shunam.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Now Shunim is a region in the tribal area of Issachar.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: It is south of Galilee, south of Mount, I think it's Mount Nebo.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: And it's a stopping point on just one of his travels at this point in his life.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And he's going on his way, and he just says, and it fell on a day.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: And by the way, I am not what you would call an absoluter by any stretch, but neither am I one that will say, oh, well, that was a happy accident.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: There are the movings of God, and we're going to see this in the life of the Shunammite woman.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Now, I want from the practical standpoint of what we can learn as far as how this applies to us directly, as far as the events of the Shunammite woman, I want us to understand God knows our circumstances.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: God knows that we, if you ever, if you ever hesitate to enter into one aspect of the service of God because you think you are incapable, guess what?
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: You're right, you are incapable.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I'm incapable.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Brother Mike is incapable.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: And when I say that, I'm not disputing his gift.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: I'm saying we both understand, everyone here understands.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: We are incapable, except it be God in us.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Except it be Christ in us the hope of glory.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Except it be God that gives us strength, guidance, and direction.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: We, as we've already said, uh, unless Christ Himself meets with us, there is no worship service.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Uh it may be some pretty singing, and there was some beautiful singing.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: But understand, if Christ is not in it, if the Spirit of God is not in it, uh, then we are incapable of doing what we ought to do in service to God.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: So do you ever feel weak?
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Then you're starting in the right point of view.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Then approach to God for mercy, grace, and guidance in that.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Well, here we find a Shunammite woman who is married.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: In fact, it says she was a great woman.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: That's not common in this day and age, uh, in that she was a woman that had that was notable.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: I'll put it that way.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Um she had land.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: That means the land was in her name, the it was her possession.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Uh she was married, but we're going to find out later a little bit about that circumstance.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: But she is she's married, but she's married to an older gentleman.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Uh in fact, it says he was an old man, and she they had no son.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Now, what the circumstances are, and very common, it's something we're not as related to today in our day and age, especially in the United States of America.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: But once upon a time, and it wasn't that long ago, that a woman could not just legally or uh or or or practically sustain herself on her own.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: That's one reason why James says uh religion undefiled before God and the Father is this, that that we uh that one of those uh expectations was to care for the fatherless and the widows in their affliction, as well as keeping your self unspotted from the world.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: But to care for the fatherless and the widows in their affliction.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Because their caregiver is gone.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: And that that was uh one of the uh the the ways that you made your living was either having a husband who had ownership rights and things of that nature, or uh at least had the promise of someone who to could take care of you later with a son in the family.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Well, she she had an old husband and no son.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: That sets the stage.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: So where there was a great woman and she constrained him to eat bread.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: That means on his travels and Schumann, she found him, he found her, she she figured out something about him and said, You're eating with me tonight.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Now, if you've ever been a uh if you've ever been a recipient of forced hospitality, that's what this is.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: In other words, she said, No, no, you're staying with me tonight.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: You're you're you're gonna eat at my table.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take care of you tonight.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: And so he says, sure, why not?
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: So he he goes in, and it so it was that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: So that became, for lack of another word, and forgive me if this is a little out of place, but if you know what an Airbnb is, that's his, that's where he's that's now his stopping place.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: That's that's his hotel.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: That's that's where he knows he has a second place to stop.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: And that woman has received her graciously received him graciously, and so he she takes care of him.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: And she perceives something because guess what?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: She's a godly woman.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: She seeks to serve God, and she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Guess what you have to have in you to discern that someone is a holy man of God?
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: You have to have eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to understand what holiness is, and that the fruits of this man were the fruits of a holy man of God.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: And she saw that in him, knew that he was a prophet of God, and said, Hey, listen to this.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: And she stands to your husband, I perceive that this is a holy man of God which passeth by us continuously on his journeys back and forth.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall, and let us set for him there a bed and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick, and it shall be when he cometh to us, he shall turn in thither.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: In other words, let's just let's just build a room for him, let's furnish it, so this man of God is taken care of.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: And her husband, like a good husband, listened to his wife, and they built the room on the on the building.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: And it says it doesn't uh between verse 10 and 11, it doesn't say how often he stayed there before verse 11 takes place, but we trust that on at least one other occasion he did so, because he says in verse 11, and it fell on a day that he came thither and turned into the chamber and lay there.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: And he said to Gehazi his servant.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Now, I just want to just throw a side note here that we're gonna see the name Gehazi here a little bit.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: We could spend some time on Gehazi by himself.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: In fact, there's there's an unfortunate circumstance that happens with Gehazi and Naaman in some verses in between.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: But there's a role that Gehazi plays in all this that I want to point out.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: He said he Elisha works through Gehazi.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Now, I can't tell you exactly why.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: I know that it's likely because he's a servant and he goes through him.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: I don't know if there was a language barrier, a cultural barrier, or just simply he was, he was just this was the protocol.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: It doesn't say plainly, but this much I know, he works through Gehazi, and it sets Gehazi up as a very important person in this, because he is eyewitness to every single thing that happens here.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: He said to Gehazi his servant, call the Shunammite.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: And when he had called her, he stood before him, she stood before him.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: And he said unto her, excuse me, and he said unto him, to Gehazi, say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: And this is the good kind of careful, not the bad kind of careful.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: In other words, this is the one you're taking care of us, not worry for us for all this care.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: What is to be done for thee?
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: In other words, Elisha wanted to do something for the woman.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: She he wanted to show some gratitude.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And he knew that he was in a circumstance to do something.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: And he says, uh, what's what's to be uh done for her?
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: What is to be done for thee?
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Wouldst thou be spoken for to the king or to the captain of the host?
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Which that's a big deal.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: The king just didn't know everybody.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: What if, and and it was just as much as this day and time as it is today, it's not necessarily what you know, it's who you know.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: This could get her into a good situation somewhere down the road.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: And that's a practical thing of life, right?
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: He says, What do you do?
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: I am talking to the king all the time and to the captain of the host.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Would you like for me to tell them who you are?
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: And he says, uh, and she answered, I dwell among my own people.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: In other words, there's no advantage to me there.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: There's nothing there.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: I don't want that.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: He said, What then is to be done for her?
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: And Gehazi answered, Verily, she hath no child.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: And her husband is old.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: In other words, Gehazi says, You know, according to just the way things work by nature, it won't be that much longer before her husband's gone.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: And she has nobody.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: And he said, Call her.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: And when he had called her, she stood at the door.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Not just a child, a son.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: By the way, if I count it right, this is one of seven miraculous births recorded in the scripture.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: The seventh one being Jesus Christ himself.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: And he said, Nay, my Lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Now, have you ever heard something, a promise, and you said, That's just too good to be true.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: That happens all the time.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: When people hear the truth of the gospel of Christ, of the finished work of Christ, how often have you might have heard it said, well, that's just too good to be true?
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: There's gotta be, there's gotta be something else about it.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: There's gotta be more to it than that.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: Well, this woman did not want false hope.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: She did not want, because that was an important thing.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: That was a big deal, and she did not want this to be uh, in other words, she said, if you're gonna promise this, it better happen.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Well, that says in verse 17, and the woman conceived and bare a son at that season that Elisha had sent unto her according to the time of life.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Now, if that's where the account stopped, that might be a glorious picture of God supplying needs to the Shunammite woman.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: It is a glorious picture of God supplying a need to the Shunammite woman, not as an earned response to her treatment of Elisha, but by the grace of God.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: But that's not where this account ends.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: It says, and when the child was grown, it fell on a day that he went out to his father to the reapers.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: And he said unto his father, My head, my head.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: And he said to the lad, carry him to his mother.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: Now he's a lad, he's not a small child, but he's maybe right around pre teen, I don't know.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: But a lad, someone that could go out and work in the field.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Well, carry him to his mother.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: And we had taken him, he brought him to his mother, and he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: At that moment, if your hope for the future is the life of your son, you've just lost hope.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, shut the door upon him, and went out.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna skip the next few verses because it's a manhunt.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: She went looking for where Elisha was.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: She said, There's one man that made this promise, and God listened to him.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go find him.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Then as they went on, verse 24, or no, verse 25.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: This is where uh he she catches up to Elisha at Mount Carmel.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: So she went and came unto the man of God, to Mount Carmel, and it came to pass when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder, yonder is that Shunammite.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Run now, I pray thee, to meet her.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: And say unto her, Is it well with thee?
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Is it well with thy husband?
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: Is it well with the child?
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: And Jesus answered, It is well.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: This is part of where the song that we sing, It Is Well with My Soul, is derived from.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: From very similar circumstances.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Now, I don't believe that the Shunammite woman was merely lying to get past Gehazi.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: She knew, from a practical standpoint, she's no worse off from her from her stable situation than she was before this boy was born.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: But do you know what she remembered when she responded to Elisha at the very at the very mention of this promise, she said, do not lie to me.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Do not because that that betrays something in her.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: She wanted a child, she loves this child, she wants this child back.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: How often?
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: How often has God ever granted life from death?
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Because every single one of you are recipients of life from death.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: This woman went in hope and knew that if God was going to answer the prayer of this prophet, she would get her son back.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: In fact, this is part of, well, this is one of the accounts briefly mentioned in Hebrews chapter 11.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: She says, It is well.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: But you know what?
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: She didn't stop.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: She kept on going to the man of God.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: And when she came to the man of God, verse 27 to the hill, she caught him by the feet.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Now, this was not normal, and she this was not just her reaching out and touching his feet.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: She she she grappled his feet.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: She she made a bear hug of them.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: In fact, if Gehazi came here to basically pull her, pull her off of uh Elisha says he came here to thrust her away.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: And the man of God said, Let her alone, for her soul is vexed within her, and the Lord hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Then she said, Did I desire a son of my Lord?
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Did I not say, Do not deceive me?
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Then he said to Gehazi, So what is her vexation?
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Her vexation is the loss of hope.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Her vexation is that she was trusting in a promise that looks like it is not coming through.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Now, what she's going to receive is the affirmation that when God makes promise, he can keep it to the uttermost.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: But there's a greater picture than that, even.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: He says, Did I desire a son of my Lord?
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Did I not say, Do not deceive me?
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Then he said to Gehazi, now again, here's the role of Gehazi.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: He's working through Gehazi, he sends Gehazi ahead with the staff.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: And Gehazi goes ahead, and I'm going to kind of shortcut real quick.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Gehazi goes on, and then the the the the um Elisha basically says, or the mother tells Elisha, as the Lord liveth and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: In other words, I'm not leaving until this is done.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: And so he follows on behind Gehazi, the woman and Elisha follow on behind Gehazi.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: Gehazi gone ahead with the staff of Elisha.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: And uh Gehazi passed on before them, verse 31, and laid the staff on the face of the child.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: Now, what Gehazi has is witnessing.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: He goes into the room of the man of God, that's where the child has been laid.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: He goes and lays the staff of Gehazi on the young lad.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: What is the conclusion that Gehazi has when he uh follows through on the command that God has given him?
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: There is no doubt this boy is dead.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: He's not fainted, he is not simply asleep, he is not in a coma, he is dead.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: He says, Where uh so Gehazi is eyewitness of this.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: But there was neither voice nor hearing, whether he went again to meet him, that is, um he comes out and he meets up with Elisha and the woman coming.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: He says, Wherefore he went again to meet him and said, saying, The child is not awakened.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead and laid upon his bed.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: And he closes the door.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: He went up and lay upon the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands, and he stretched himself upon the child, and the flesh of the child waxed warm.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Now that's the first sign of life.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: But it's not an active sign of life.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Now, I I again I don't want to over-spiritualize this, but do you know you can be alive without being actively alive?
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: And that's actually a call of the gospel.
- 21:44unknown: Yeah.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Is that to the living, rise up and rise from the dead and walk.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: Not because that uh obedience gives you life, but in in the living of the God, in the living that God has given you to hear the command of the gospel and to act as if you're alive.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Well, uh Elisha uh um uh it's not done.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: It says Elisha goes back and it says, then he returned and walked in the house to and fro and went up and stretched himself upon him, and the child sneezed seven times.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna pretend to tell you, I know why seven times.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Uh I would be a liar if I told you I did.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: But he sneezes seven times.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: I know seven is a complete number in the scripture.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: That's as far as I can go.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: But I do know this.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: There is no doubt now, but that he's alive.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Before he was warm, now he's active.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Now he's actually showing signs.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: It says, and the child opened his eyes, and he called Gehazi, that is Elisha, and called Gehazi and said, Call the Shunamite.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: So he called her, and then she was coming to him, and he said, Take up thy son.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: And she went in and fell at his feet and bowed herself to the ground and took up her son and went out.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: A miraculous reception of life from death.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: This is not just her receiving the miraculous birth of a child when she had none, she's also receiving a child from death.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: She is an eyewitness to the power of God and his providential care from her.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: There was nothing eternal happening here, at least in the sense of this Shiramite woman.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: She was not receiving eternal life.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: But what she was receiving was the providential care of God.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: But what she's also received, and what we have also received, is God is in control of life and death.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: And at his command, he can say what is dead is now alive.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: He doesn't answer to anybody, he doesn't ask anybody.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: Nobody asked this boy if he wanted to come back alive or not.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: God said, live and he lived, just as he does with you, just as he did with me.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: And there is every single one of us have a condition, and it's called depravity, and it's called our human nature.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: We are born in the same condition that Adam has plunged us in, that we are by nature children of wrath, even as others.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: We are dead in trespasses and in sin.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: And when God says live, guess what?
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: We live according to the power of God.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Now, then after that, we're called to obedience to walk in that life.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: Now, that's not the whole account of the Shunammite woman, however.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: That's the account of her son and her son being brought back to life.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: We skip over to Kings chapter 8, which, or 2 Kings chapter 8, and there's a lot that happens between that time.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: I recommend that you go home, well, go home and read your Bible, but go home and just read those chapters in between.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: Starting in chapter 8, verse 1, I believe this is kind of a callback.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: This is not the first two verses of chapter 8, I don't believe, happen in chronology, right after chapter 7.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: It's a review of something, and then we pick back up where the review goes off.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: It says, Then spake Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise and go thou and thine household, and sojourn wherever thou canst sojourn.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: For the Lord hath called for a famine, and it shall come upon the land seven years.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: And the woman arose and did after the saying of the man of God, and she went with her household, and so sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Now, what happens when you leave your land unattended for seven years?
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: It becomes not your land anymore.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: See, if you don't leave somebody behind to actually secure it for you, it gets taken.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: It gets moved on to, it gets uh picked up by other people.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: And that's it doesn't say that explicitly, but that's exactly what happens here.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: And so this land of this great woman is taken from her.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: And she has now once she had land, but no son.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: Now she has a son, but no land.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: And it came to pass, and this is one of those occasions where it is not by accident.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: It came to pass at the seven years' end that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines, and she went forth to cry unto the king for a house and for her land.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: Now I believe this is King Joram.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: Is it Joram or Jehoram?
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: Joram, I believe it is.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: I can't keep those two straight in my mind.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: If I if it's one and not the other, forgive me for using the name Joram if it's in error.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: But uh, I'm just gonna.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: This is the king.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: I believe this is King Joram, uh, but he he is uh he is the son of um Ahab.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: Uh Ahab's dead and gone.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: Jezebel's still on the scene, by the way, but but Ahab's gone, and he is king.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: He's not as bad as Ahab, but he's not a stellar king either.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: But we're gonna see there's a little bit of something in him, perhaps.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: But in uh he says the uh this is what she would do.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: Now, some kings had open courts, some kings had closed courts.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: Now, if you go to uh uh if you go to the book of um Esther, you're gonna find an example of a king with a closed court.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: You did not even approach into him unless he bid you come or extended unto you the scepter.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Some kings had an open court where you could come and plead your case before the king.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: So she went to go plead her case before the king.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: And it came to pass that that she went to the king to plead cry to her for a house and her land.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: While that's happening, the king talked with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Now, who's Gehazi?
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Apart from just being the servant of the man of God, he's the eyewitness of everything that happened to the Shunammite woman.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: He knows the promise that was made, he knows why it was made, he knows that that that she was she had a miraculous birth of a son.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: She knows he knows that she died, that that the son died.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: And he knows that he he could he could say, I was there, I was in the room, that boy was dead.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: And he says, and then Elisha went in, and when he opened the door again, that boy was alive.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: And he was eyewitness to all of these things.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: And the king talked with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Now, there's something that happens to Gehazi, which I'm wondering why he's even talking to the king at this point.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: Because if you go and read what happens to Gehazi, he's a leper at this point.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: If this is happening in chronological order.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: But apparently the king likes stories so much that he's willing to talk to Gehazi because he, the store, the king, likes the stories.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: And the king talked to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that Elisha hath done.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Now, where does he start?
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe with the parting of the river with the mantle of Elijah back in.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, there were some other miracles, like with the woman and the crucible oil before he even talks to the Shunammite woman.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: But at some point it gets to the Shunammite woman.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: And he says, and he was telling the king, while he was telling the king.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Now, again, this isn't by accident.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: This was not a it is coincidence in the sense that it's all both happening at the same time, but it is not coincidence by reason, it's coincidence by circumstance.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: In other words, it's it is true.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Two things are happening at exactly the same time, but there's someone making sure they happen at the same time, so that this woman will be taken care of.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: Because while Gehazi is talking to the king about this Shunammite woman that we used to stay with, and she had a son that was given by the power of God, and that he died one day.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: And I saw this woman coming up, and she and she uh she was telling us about the son that was dead, and I even went with the staff of Elisha and laid it, but that didn't do anything.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: And uh the Lord restored the son uh back unto her so that uh the son was fully restored alive while he's telling that story to the king, how he restored the dead body to life, that behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life cried to the king for her womb for her house and for her land.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: And Gehazah said, My Lord, O king, this is the woman.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm again I'm not gonna try to over-spiritualize this.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: But I will say this.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Do you know we have a witness for us that speaks at every point, both on our behalf and to us, to witness the very truth of God, and that is the Spirit of God Himself.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: That he bears witness with our spirit that we are heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: He also bears our groanings that cannot be uttered to the Lord Himself.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: Here, Gehazi, being a witness of all these events, is being the intercessor between the king and this woman to verify the circumstances of this truth.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: And when the king asked the woman, O Lord, this is the woman and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: Now we all know it was God, but but we he worked through Elisha in this.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: Elisha would have said the same thing.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: He says, and when the king asked the woman, she told him, so the king appointed her.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: Now I want us, uh I want you, uh you know what?
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: In fact, let's remind ourselves just briefly, and I hope I'm gonna meet that time.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: Do you remember what the two things were that Elisha offered up in service for the woman to be made known to the king or to the officer, or to the chief, the one of the chiefs?
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: He says, Well, part one just got taken care of by Gehazi himself.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: He says, so that well, by the Lord himself using Gehazi.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: He says, so the king appointed her a certain officer.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: So there's a second one.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: She she got that as well, saying, Restore all that was hers.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: And do you know what?
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: That's all she came crying for.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: I just want what was mine.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: And all the fruits of the field since the day she left.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: The land even unto now.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: That you get the land back.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: How about you get everything that land yielded for seven years?
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: That woman just came back now.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: She has land.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: And she has a bounty of sustenance that she did not even labor for.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: Do you know what shunum means?
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a lot of names in the scripture mean something.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Shunamite?
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: The shunamite actually is the the word shunamite means a female resident of shunim.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Shunum.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: You were either a shunim or a shunamite.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: Shunum means a double place of rest.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Double?
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: She got her son and she got her land.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: Now, from a practical standpoint, should we fear the things that go on in this life when God makes promise that he'll take care of us?
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: No, we shouldn't.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: Do we?
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: There was a moment this woman was vexed.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: But she turned to the one who could heal the vexation.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: This woman had lost materially her way of living.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: And the Lord restored that and sevenfold over seven years' worth of abundance.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: So, from a practical standpoint, this is a very good lesson concerning the Lord's providential care of his people.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: But I cannot help but think of Isaiah chapter 40.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: When it says, comfort ye, comfort ye, my people.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: Every time I start to quote that, I cannot get that in the next verse.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: And I'm ashamed to say I still haven't figured out how to memorize it.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, saith your God.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is accomplished.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: You know what accomplishment is?
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: It's not just that it's that that it has stopped.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: You know, I I could I can go into an endeavor and then halfway through just stop it.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: It's not accomplished.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: It's just ended.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: You say, this is more than just the Lord that crying out to her that your warfare is ended.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: It can end several ways.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: It can end in defeat, it could end in stalemate.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: That's not what accomplished is.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: Accomplishment is that the warfare has been won, that there is victory in this warfare.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: He says, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: Now, because Jerusalem is not in a circumstance right now of being in a comfortable position.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: This is not something that is for the present day.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: In fact, there when I say present day, I'm not talking about today in 2026.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about in the day that Isaiah is saying this, there were days ahead of Jerusalem that were not going to be comfortable days because of their wickedness, because of their rebellion against God, because they, being a called-out people into God, were not, were taking the name of the Lord in vain.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: That they were named by the name of God, but acting like everybody else.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: And so this uh uh this anger that was gonna come from God, which was not gonna be a truly consuming anger, for he's he uh we find the mercy of God in that as well.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Uh but he was going to bring judgment to Israel just like he said he would all the way back in uh in uh Deuteronomy 32, I believe it is.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: Uh he did this was no surprise for centuries.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: The Lord had long patience with Israel.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: But the patience was about to end because the judgment was about to begin, but not utter and complete judgment.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: And yet, even in this, even with the knowledge that judgment was on the horizon, even with the knowledge that they must uh that the that the that the uh uh uh that the uh uh the things that they've done must have recompense and that they would face that recompense.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: God is saying, listen, the day will come when there will be someone that will come to you and say comfort to you, that will say uh that will cry unto you and say your warfare, that which you have struggled against, is now over and you are victorious in it.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: The warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned, and that she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: Now, if there's any doubt, that is not double punishment.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: That is not like you saying, Okay, okay, son, I'm gonna punish you twice as hard that you deserve as this.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: That's not why?
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: Because this is comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, that you have received double for all your sins.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: Now, what does this have to do with a Shunammite woman, other than the fact that her name literally means double place of rest?
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: She received life from death, and she received a possession of land that was bountiful and full.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: Do you know what you have received at the Lord's hands?
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: One, your iniquity is pardoned.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: Now, that's a warfare that we that we must needs have accomplished, or else we could not, we cannot be with God.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: There is not anything that we can do that that uh by our own righteousness, by that righteousness that the scriptures describes as your righteousness is as filthy rags, there is nothing good that we can do in and of our human nature.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: There is no no no prayer that we can pray.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: Uh no deed.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: If it were even within our heart to want to, which guess what?
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: It isn't by nature.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: If we are by nature children of wrath, even as others, then we are also fools by nature.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: And whether or not our mouth ever says that there is a God, our hearts are far from him.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Uh do you know there was there were those who put on a really good religious show, who looked for all outward purposes, as if they were the most holy and pious people on earth.
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: And you know what Christ said?
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: You are you are not mine.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: I'll just summarize that.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: In fact, he says, ye are like sepulchres full of dead men's bones, white on the outside, inside full of corruption.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: These were the Pharisees.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: These were those who said that they believed in God, right?
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: Well, what they believed was a way that they could earn their own righteousness and be in a place of eternal joy that they earned for themselves.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: They did not believe that they were sinners.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: And guess what?
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: If you believe yourself to be a sinner, you can only come to that conclusion knowing what sin actually is.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: And you can only know what sin actually is by knowing that it is a violation, it is a transgression and iniquity against the holy God Himself.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: If there is a desire to be made right with God, then you know you are not right with God.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: And so there is that part of that vexation, there's part of that trouble, there's that, there's part of that warfare.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: Is that you know you need to be made right with God?
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: Guess what?
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: If you know you need to be made right with God, you've already received the first blessing of God, and that is life from death.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: Remember, I said earlier, it's a trick question.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: How often does God deal with life or death?
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: Every hour! Every time he says live to the child of God and their heart and death and in transgression of responds to the voice of the Son of God, and then here, what does it say?
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: Shall live.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: And do you know why?
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: If that's all that God did, we couldn't uh who here could say, well, you know what, God, that's not enough?
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: Not one of us could claim that that was not enough.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: How could we look at God with the uh with the uh uh uh with the knowledge that He has uh called us from death into life, uh translate us into the kingdom of his dear son, uh put something in us that is uh eternal and has it uh has uh a life that is life eternal in it, that is that is in his own nature.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: How can we say, well, Lord, you know, what else?
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: We can never what we can never claim that.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: We would rightfully say, Okay, Lord, I will gladly suffer in every aspect of this life until I get to you and it's okay.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: That would be okay.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: That would that would be worthy of you know what?
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: The Lord didn't say that.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: The Lord said it didn't say, you know what?
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: Well, see, uh I'll see you when you get here.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: He also gave us a land of possession, he gave us a place of rest, he gave us a place to be, not just eternally, but right here and right now when the cross when Christ Himself established the church, his king, uh the manifest, visible kingdom of God on earth, when he established his church, uh he said the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: It was to be inhabited, it was to be possessed.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: In fact, he said that there are uh there's a uh uh not controversial, not when you understand it, that the the violent possess uh go in and take it by force.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: Uh he's not talking about uh people with guns, he's talking about those that can't wait to get through the door.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: The image that comes to mind is uh it's not so much nowadays, uh, but it wasn't so long ago uh that there was a day called Black Friday.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: And uh there were there were a lot of good things that people wanted to spend their hard-earned money for to get into these stores on Black Friday.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: And that they literally, when you open the door, they would push their way past each other to get in because they wanted what was on the inside, they wanted access to what their heart's desire was, and that was a material thing and not and not worthy to be followed.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: Uh-uh.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: I'm glad to say I was never part of it and caught up in all of that particular thing.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: But understand this: uh when the uh when the doors of the church are open, uh how much does your heart desire want to press in?
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: Even if there was a crowd in front of that door, are you gonna say, well, okay, today's not the day I meet with the Lord and the turn back?
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna say, no, uh, I'm gonna press in until I can get in?
- 45:10SPEAKER_00: With the Lord! That's where he is! That's what the blessing! That's what the second double blessing is! A complete, uh, seven times over a blessing of the substance of God, not material bread, not material grapes, or a land flowing with milk and honey like uh Canaan was in a natural way, uh but a land where everything that we need is provided for, where we do not work for it, but we are granted for we are granted it.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: When do you need breath uh rest?
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: When do you need peace?
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: When you need consolation, when do you need courage?
- 45:43SPEAKER_00: When do you need uh uh when you when you need joy?
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: When do you need uh the reminder of the promises of the finished work of God?
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: It is in the church of God, the declaration of the of the truth of God, it is in his word when you uh have access to receive that.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: And that's what that's the double blessing that we have in the church of God.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: It's that uh not just the declaration of the finished work of Christ, as if that were a small thing, but also the present blessing of sustenance and the abiding presence of God with us.
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: And do you know?
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: I know you know this, I trust you know this, but if you didn't know this, I'll be glad to be the first one to tell you.
- 46:25SPEAKER_00: What you have in the kingdom of God is part of the eternal joy.
- 46:33SPEAKER_00: It is not separate.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: There's a beautiful picture that I can't I can't remember the moment that that uh the understanding was relayed to me in this way.
- 46:44SPEAKER_00: But the fact that when you join in praise with Christ, guess who also is joining in praise with Christ?
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: The entire heavenly host.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: When you praise God, it is not a separate worship service than what is going on now.
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: You are joining in the same worship of God as all of the heavenly hosts, as the angels that cried holy, holy, holy, as a seraphim and cherubim that that uh that that uh that fill up heaven, but you know, uh not fill, because there's there's still the appropriate space there.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: But you know what?
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: The same praise that the saints that have gone on before, that now stand in the perfect righteousness of Christ without the burden of the flesh until the day of the resurrection, which there will be no burden of the flesh in that day, that they, when they sing praises unto Christ, the same spirit, the same truth, the same glory is what's mixed in with our voices as it goes up to God.
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: That we are partakers of the heavenly calling.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: That we have the same blessing that they have right now, but that we don't have to wait for it.
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: Now, is it in the fullness?
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: No, not yet.
- 48:09SPEAKER_00: But guess what?
- 48:09SPEAKER_00: It's good enough.
- 48:11SPEAKER_00: It is good enough.
- 48:13SPEAKER_00: It is more than we deserve.
- 48:15SPEAKER_00: In fact, it is considered uh the the double blessing.
- 48:19SPEAKER_00: So we have a double place of rest.
- 48:22SPEAKER_00: We have the place of rest and knowing the eternal work of Christ and its security for all of all for all of eternal glory, but we also have the place of rest here in the church of God where we know we have been given all blessing to eat at his table to our fill.
- 48:41SPEAKER_00: And by the way, there's never a day, this is the beauty of the abundance of God, never a day that the pantry is opened up says, Well, I forgot to get groceries today.
- 48:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you've ever been hungry before.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: I will say that is not a burden I've ever had.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: And and I don't mean that I've never not eaten before, but I've never gone hungry before.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: I've missed a couple meals before, but thankfully they were by my choice.
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, God has blessed me in in such a way that I have never known a day of hunger.
- 49:22SPEAKER_00: I know that there are some that have.
- 49:24SPEAKER_00: And I know that that, I may be, I'm not gonna ask you raising your hands by any stretch.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: But if you've ever known that moment where you needed and wanted something, and you reached out and it was not there to get, that cannot happen in the kingdom of God.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: There will never be a moment where you go to Christ and you say, Lord, I need comfort.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: And Christ says, I have none to give you.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: That will never happen.
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: Do you Christ can even comfort you while he's spanking it?
- 50:03SPEAKER_00: That that has happened to me more than once.
- 50:06SPEAKER_00: And when I say spanking it, it's not like man's punishment.
- 50:12SPEAKER_00: Sometimes with the very words of just him like Peter.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: I I can't imagine, I liken it to him looking at Peter.
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: When Peter and Christ met eyes and he saw the Lord looking at him on the day that he betrayed him three times just on the night, that just like Christ said that he would, and Peter went out and wept bitterly.
- 50:39SPEAKER_00: I don't think for a moment that was a look of anger.
- 50:43SPEAKER_00: It was a look of understanding.
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: It was like, Peter, I I told you.
- 50:48SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: I knew before.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: This is not a surprise.
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: There is never a moment that the Lord, that we need to go to the Lord and we need something.
- 51:01SPEAKER_00: Whatever it is that He's not going to be able to supply, I would call it the land that is full of His blessing.
- 51:09SPEAKER_00: I I hope that that was the Lord first.
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: I pray that it was a blessing to you, but if not, that is terrible.
