Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee and I
• 0:56
Speaker 4: have in the studio with the Lisa Odi and Hollis
• 1:03
Speaker 4: Lewis here with us today again. Man, there's a lot
• 1:09
Speaker 4: of crazy kind of things going on, like in sports
• 1:14
Speaker 4: football everywhere, everywhere, everything everyway. So I'm gonna I'm gonna
• 1:21
Speaker 4: start with college football having the they want five years
• 1:28
Speaker 4: of eligibility. Okay, now, I gotta go back. Okay, y'all
• 1:34
Speaker 4: gotta bear with me just a little bit.
• 1:35
Speaker 2: Just but before we start, let me let me ask
• 1:38
Speaker 2: a qualifying question. So that means five years of playing
• 1:43
Speaker 2: for eligibility for an athlete. Well, what I'm saying is
• 1:47
Speaker 2: that under the current system, you have five years with
• 1:51
Speaker 2: the red shirt. You have the red shirt, right, and
• 1:52
Speaker 2: then you have the four years old ability for play
• 1:55
Speaker 2: on the field. So what this is talking about now,
• 1:57
Speaker 2: and I'm asking the question, is just saying five years
• 2:00
Speaker 2: of play plus the red shirt, So that means you
• 2:02
  Speaker 2: would have a.
• 2:03
Speaker 5: Toll six the way I read it today, And guys,
• 2:07
Speaker 5: you know, I'm not sure. I'm not the expert either,
• 2:10
Speaker 5: but uh, what they wanted it's called five in five model,
• 2:15
Speaker 5: and it would do away with red shirt. Oh freshman, okay,
• 2:18
Speaker 5: So you've got five years wherever you go or in
• 2:21
Speaker 5: the treasure, five years to play and if you're on
• 2:24
Speaker 5: a team and you don't play that year, you know
• 2:27
Speaker 5: you you lose that year.
• 2:28
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 2:29
Speaker 5: So but they do away with the red shirt, which
• 2:32
Speaker 5: is I have a problem with that because that's gonna
• 2:34
Speaker 5: affect your high school kids immensely, Like what's gonna happen
• 2:38
Speaker 5: is you're gonna have these You're gonna have a bunch
• 2:40
Speaker 5: of these twenty three year old five year players that
• 2:44
Speaker 5: are gonna fill spots for you know, their whole eligibility.
• 2:48
Speaker 5: And then you've got the high school kids that are
• 2:51
Speaker 5: gonna probably have to go JUCO or even because they're
• 2:53
Speaker 5: not gonna be red shirt freshmen anymore, they'll have to
• 2:56
Speaker 5: go JUCO or Division two to prove their abilities. Do
• 2:59
  Speaker 5: you think so?
• 3:00
Speaker 2: So? Well, let me ask another question, So does the
• 3:03
Speaker 2: JUCO now does that count towards that five years? So
• 3:07
Speaker 2: so you said if I spend a year in JUCO,
• 3:10
Speaker 2: that means when I move up, only have four years
• 3:12
Speaker 2: four years left? Four years. Now, that's the way I
• 3:14
  Speaker 2: read that. That's that's how.
• 3:17
Speaker 4: It is now functioning without So I'm going to assume
• 3:23
Speaker 4: that that's that's the same process with the five year
• 3:29
  Speaker 4: right right?
• 3:29
  Speaker 2: So if you.
• 3:33
Speaker 5: So, do kids get and let me ask another question,
• 3:36
Speaker 5: do kids get red shirted that often now in this
• 3:38
  Speaker 5: new system?
• 3:41
Speaker 2: Well that was going to be my point because I
• 3:42
Speaker 2: actually like this. I think this makes sense currently because
• 3:47
Speaker 2: what happens now is that if you're income and freshmen,
• 3:51
Speaker 2: you don't necessarily need to go and you're not like
• 3:54
Speaker 2: power for ready, right, you can go to and that's
• 3:58
Speaker 2: what I tell kids now, just I'm a little bit
• 4:00
Speaker 2: all over the place, but you don't have to go
• 4:02
Speaker 2: to your dream school initially. You don't have to go
• 4:05
Speaker 2: D one initially. If you can go to D two
• 4:08
Speaker 2: junior college, even D three and you can ball out
• 4:11
Speaker 2: on that level, you're gonna get a look because as
• 4:14
Speaker 2: you just mentioned, how excuse me, those power forward programs
• 4:18
Speaker 2: aren't necessarily they're not looking at the high school kid first, right,
• 4:22
Speaker 2: They're looking at the portal first. Then't high school exactly?
• 4:25
Speaker 2: I would say maybe portal Junior college didn't high school,
• 4:28
Speaker 2: So they're not necessarily looking at high school kids first.
• 4:30
Speaker 2: So I think this is a good opportunity. You go,
• 4:33
Speaker 2: you can go somewhere and play for maybe a season
• 4:35
Speaker 2: or two or maybe even three. Think if you had
• 4:37
Speaker 2: three years like it's state and you were able to
• 4:39
Speaker 2: really build yourself up, you get some national recognition, you
• 4:43
Speaker 2: team is winning, then you can be able to step
• 4:45
Speaker 2: up to go to Marshall or WVU something like that.
• 4:47
Speaker 2: So I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing.
• 4:49
Speaker 4: But seeing okay, but let's be West Virginia State and say,
• 4:56
Speaker 4: are we going to be a do we want to
• 4:58
Speaker 4: be just a foundation building the kid who's gonna now
• 5:03
Speaker 4: go from us going to play for us for a
• 5:05
Speaker 4: year or two and then going to spend the rest
• 5:07
Speaker 4: of his three years his best years at Marshall or
• 5:11
  Speaker 4: WU or wherever.
• 5:12
  Speaker 2: But I say that's what it is. I mean, I'm
• 5:14
Speaker 2: not saying that's what it is now, but I think
• 5:17
Speaker 2: and again, the way I'm looking at this, the way again,
• 5:22
Speaker 2: the way I'm conceptualizing this is like it's almost saying
• 5:26
Speaker 2: like those Division two, the lower division ones, it's almost
• 5:30
Speaker 2: like they're going to be a farm system or the
• 5:32
Speaker 2: power for it exactly, it's going to be a farm
• 5:37
Speaker 2: system for those schools. Less you're on the top, Yeah,
• 5:40
Speaker 2: everything else is, everything below you is going to be
• 5:43
  Speaker 2: a farm system. It's a farm system. But and I'll
• 5:45
Speaker 2: say this kind of two points off of that is
• 5:48
Speaker 2: that I think if this is the case, if it's
• 5:52
Speaker 2: manifested where these lower schools are going to be a
• 5:56
Speaker 2: farm system, then they have to figure out a way
• 5:58
Speaker 2: to start to compens save these kids these schools. Because
• 6:02
Speaker 2: I think that's the problem. Yeah, Because if I got
• 6:03
Speaker 2: a kid, and if I'm losing my best three players.
• 6:06
Speaker 2: And I'm just using State as an example, and they're
• 6:09
Speaker 2: going to Marshall or w v U, then it has
• 6:11
Speaker 2: to be some sort of kickback to me to make
• 6:14
Speaker 2: sure my program has sustainability. Okay, Now the problem I
• 6:18
Speaker 2: have with that what do we do now?
• 6:22
Speaker 4: So what are we doing with the pay of that player?
• 6:24
Speaker 4: Because if I'm leaving in my mind, how I'm thinking
• 6:29
Speaker 4: if if you come recruit me from wherever from State?
• 6:35
  Speaker 2: In my mind, bro, what's my money? What's what's what's
• 6:40
Speaker 2: what am I work? What do you mean? I want dollars?
• 6:44
Speaker 2: But it's gonna be that's that's individual though, you know,
• 6:47
Speaker 2: based on your accolades and all that.
• 6:49
Speaker 5: Right, they're not sure if the policy is going to
• 6:56
Speaker 5: happen like this is this is still in the worst
• 6:59
Speaker 5: but they're pretty sure or that, you know, the way
• 7:01
Speaker 5: things look, it's pretty favorable that it's gonna happen this way.
• 7:04
Speaker 5: It seems inevitable to me. I mean, just getting rid
• 7:07
Speaker 5: of the red shirt, you know that that part of it.
• 7:09
Speaker 5: And like you said, it's not a totally bad thing.
• 7:13
Speaker 5: I do think for coaches it maybe make things a
• 7:15
Speaker 5: little more complicated, sure, because they're not going to be
• 7:17
Speaker 5: able to you know, if they let's say they bring
• 7:20
Speaker 5: in a guy, they do recruit somebody from a high
• 7:23
Speaker 5: school or a juco and and and they're good enough
• 7:25
Speaker 5: to play in a year or two, but they're just
• 7:27
Speaker 5: not good enough right now, and they sit a year,
• 7:29
  Speaker 5: then they're.
• 7:29
Speaker 2: Gonna they lost. They lost that year, and.
• 7:32
Speaker 5: They're going to the transfer portal right away because they're like, well,
• 7:34
Speaker 5: I'm not playing here, and so you lose that player
• 7:37
Speaker 5: even though they have potential. So that's a can of
• 7:38
Speaker 5: worms that coaches have to deal with, right.
• 7:40
Speaker 2: But I also think to that point, and that's a
• 7:42
Speaker 2: very good point. Again, what's going to happen is like
• 7:45
Speaker 2: I think there's this thing if it, if it goes
• 7:47
Speaker 2: through it, it plays out. Now that kid is going to say, well, look,
• 7:51
  Speaker 2: if I go to w v U and I'm not
• 7:53
Speaker 2: going to start that year, I'm gonna sit. I'm gonna
• 7:55
Speaker 2: lose that year, right, I'm going to go somewhere to
• 7:58
Speaker 2: a play, right, So I'm going want to go to
• 8:01
Speaker 2: and again it may be fairmouey, maybe a D two
• 8:04
Speaker 2: or maybe a lower D one. I'll go there and play,
• 8:06
Speaker 2: get my reps up and then go and I'm telling you,
• 8:09
Speaker 2: I think we're gonna get to a point where when
• 8:11
Speaker 2: we talk about the power for schools, and particularly schools
• 8:15
Speaker 2: in the SEC, where we're not going to have freshman
• 8:18
Speaker 2: in sophomore no more like again, they're gonna come in.
• 8:22
Speaker 2: All those kids are gonna come from transporporter. You'll have,
• 8:24
Speaker 2: like the exceptions those elite high school athletes, but you're
• 8:28
Speaker 2: gonna have just teams full of juniors and sophomores that
• 8:31
Speaker 2: come in first players.
• 8:32
Speaker 4: And there's been talk about it that being pretty much
• 8:36
Speaker 4: where we're at. Practically, that's practically where we are where
• 8:39
Speaker 4: we're at right then, Okay, so.
• 8:43
Speaker 2: Help me what do we between both of you.
• 8:46
Speaker 4: I'm a really pretty good freshman coming out of high
• 8:51
Speaker 4: or I'm senior coming out of high school. What's my options?
• 8:56
Speaker 4: Who are either one of you all come and knocking
• 8:58
  Speaker 4: on my door?
• 8:59
Speaker 2: I would say probably not. But if i'm if I'm
• 9:03
Speaker 2: advising that kid again, if you find the opportunity to
• 9:06
Speaker 2: go to that power, U powerful and you can just play.
• 9:09
Speaker 2: And again that don't mean maybe you start to meet
• 9:10
Speaker 2: special teams the other day. But I would also say
• 9:14
Speaker 2: don't overlook those smaller D one and those division two
• 9:17
Speaker 2: schools because if you have the work ethic, if to
• 9:19
Speaker 2: your point, if you have the metrics, and if you
• 9:22
Speaker 2: go there and ball out, you made that scholarship from
• 9:25
Speaker 2: Marshall WVU may turn into a scholarship from Georgia and Alabama.
• 9:29
Speaker 2: So it's to me, it's about going somewhere that's gonna
• 9:33
Speaker 2: fit your skill set, giving you an opportunity to play
• 9:36
Speaker 2: and ball wherever you at. Because if you're a Division
• 9:39
Speaker 2: two All American and you meet those metrics standards of
• 9:42
Speaker 2: the power for you're gonna go.
• 9:44
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 9:45
Speaker 2: And that's just the bottom line you're going.
• 9:47
Speaker 5: And I think also the timing of when they try
• 9:50
Speaker 5: to implement this role is crucial. Like if they're looking
• 9:52
Speaker 5: at this for next year, they need to do it
• 9:54
Speaker 5: like yesterday, because you've caught these football catchers that are
• 9:57
Speaker 5: gonna be dealing with, you know, the transfer portal win
• 10:00
Speaker 5: in January. You've got basketball programs getting ready. You know
• 10:03
Speaker 5: that would affect the Tall athletics. You know, if this
• 10:06
Speaker 5: is something they're playing with and they're thinking about doing
• 10:08
Speaker 5: it next year, it's almost already too late. But if
• 10:12
Speaker 5: they're going to do it, they need to do it
• 10:13
Speaker 5: now or wait another year. Or two. In my opinion, I.
• 10:16
Speaker 2: Agree with that too.
• 10:20
Speaker 4: I'm trying to be the parent of that kid that
• 10:25
Speaker 4: is going to do exactly what you said, like it's
• 10:28
Speaker 4: going to go to a D two juco with the
• 10:34
Speaker 4: idea and the hopes that somebody's going to come in
• 10:39
Speaker 4: and bring me, bring me in with pay. What if
• 10:45
Speaker 4: you run into a situation to where you don't get
• 10:50
Speaker 4: that pay, you have some people contacting you. So let's
• 10:54
Speaker 4: say I'm a school that really doesn't have that kind
• 10:56
Speaker 4: of money. I come in and I say, hey, Hollis man,
• 10:58
Speaker 4: I think you could probably play, you know, right now as.
• 11:00
Speaker 2: Soon as you get soon as you get on the field.
• 11:02
Speaker 4: You you are a guy, and you haven't yet heard
• 11:07
  Speaker 4: from any money.
• 11:10
Speaker 2: What do you do? I mean, it's just about earning
• 11:13
Speaker 2: the money. At that point, you may not be able
• 11:15
Speaker 2: to be in that class to get it off the back.
• 11:17
Speaker 2: But let's just say you've been two years, You've already
• 11:19
Speaker 2: got You've already spent your two years. Let's say, lord, yeah,
• 11:24
Speaker 2: I got I got two years already count.
• 11:26
Speaker 4: Against me mm hm, And I haven't really because let's
• 11:30
Speaker 4: say I wasn't really the star right to But you're
• 11:32
Speaker 4: getting some looks, but you're getting some looks.
• 11:34
Speaker 2: You gotta player. It's like it's the same thing back
• 11:36
Speaker 2: in the day. You play your way into a scholarship,
• 11:38
Speaker 2: you play your way into some nil. So it's it's
• 11:41
Speaker 2: the same concept, different pool of money, but you still
• 11:44
Speaker 2: pay your You still have the opportunity to play your
• 11:47
Speaker 2: way into some money and to me, and it goes
• 11:49
Speaker 2: back to the point that I said earlier, because that situation.
• 11:52
Speaker 2: I think those situations are definitely going to happen, right yes,
• 11:55
Speaker 2: where hey, we can offer you a scholarship, but we
• 11:57
Speaker 2: really can't offer you no money because you ain't really prove.
• 11:59
Speaker 2: But I also think that the NCAA, which they're just
• 12:03
Speaker 2: always so late to the party, they're seem to be
• 12:05
Speaker 2: a little doing a little catching up. Now they have
• 12:08
Speaker 2: to create a revenue model where it comes excuse me,
• 12:10
Speaker 2: a revenue sharing model where it comes all the way
• 12:13
  Speaker 2: down where D three's yacht Juco's everybody's getting a little
• 12:18
Speaker 2: part of that money. And again your part of at
• 12:21
Speaker 2: your at state. It may be only we got two
• 12:24
Speaker 2: hundred and fifty grand to work with for our athletic program,
• 12:27
Speaker 2: as far as you know, paying our athletes. It may
• 12:29
Speaker 2: be smaller, but at the very least you can get
• 12:32
Speaker 2: some sort of incentive so we can still maintain our
• 12:35
Speaker 2: programs and we can get those athletes to your point
• 12:38
Speaker 2: with the hope of moving up. Because I think that's
• 12:40
Speaker 2: what it's gonna be seeing. I'm thinking, and I'll ask
• 12:44
Speaker 2: both of you this question. Take yourself.
• 12:48
Speaker 4: Put yourself in a situation of being one of the
• 12:51
Speaker 4: best athletes at your school, okay, at your school, and
• 12:58
Speaker 4: one of us go somewhere it's getting paid a ton
• 13:01
Speaker 4: of money, and the other two legitimately thinks and has
• 13:07
Speaker 4: the right to think I'm as good, maybe even better.
• 13:10
Speaker 2: You know, he might have been the third of us.
• 13:12
Speaker 2: You know, I could have You could have been one.
• 13:14
Speaker 2: You could have been two.
• 13:17
Speaker 4: Because you because recruiting isn't like guaranteed right, Like it's
• 13:22
Speaker 4: like we can see talent and scouts may not even
• 13:26
  Speaker 4: talk to you.
• 13:27
Speaker 2: I'm how do you like?
• 13:30
Speaker 4: How are players going to feel sitting there watching and
• 13:33
Speaker 4: listening to people get this money?
• 13:36
Speaker 2: And we want to talk about teamwork.
• 13:37
Speaker 4: We want to talk about team We want to talk
• 13:39
Speaker 4: about unity, we want to talk about let's all come
• 13:41
Speaker 4: together and win a game. I'm going to I'm probably
• 13:45
Speaker 4: going to go to a school, not because you're there,
• 13:47
Speaker 4: not because Lisa is there. I'm going because they're paying me.
• 13:51
Speaker 4: That doesn't help how I can socialize in the school,
• 13:56
Speaker 4: How I like the school, how I campus, all those things.
• 14:00
Speaker 2: That we used to We're loyalty.
• 14:03
Speaker 4: We were told though, right when you when you go
• 14:05
Speaker 4: to go visit the school, you want to light the campus,
• 14:07
Speaker 4: you want to you know, all these kinds of things, right, I.
• 14:12
Speaker 2: Mean, I think all of.
• 14:13
Speaker 5: That is gone, and it has been. I really don't
• 14:15
Speaker 5: think this changes from that aspect of it.
• 14:18
Speaker 2: It may have already gone.
• 14:19
Speaker 5: I mean I think that was already gone when when
• 14:21
Speaker 5: nil was introduced. I mean, I think totally now. I mean,
• 14:25
Speaker 5: I don't want to sound harsh, but I think most
• 14:27
Speaker 5: players now are out there for you know, the money,
• 14:30
Speaker 5: and and wherever they get the biggest paycheck is where
• 14:33
Speaker 5: they're land. And you know that most of those places, though,
• 14:36
Speaker 5: are also nice places. You know, the ones that are
• 14:39
Speaker 5: they've got a nice campus, they've gotten nice to sell,
• 14:42
Speaker 5: so you know that kind of goes hand in hand.
• 14:45
Speaker 5: But you know the whole point of this, I just
• 14:47
Speaker 5: don't and help me understand, guys, why would you want
• 14:51
Speaker 5: to eliminate the red shirt year and go to this
• 14:55
Speaker 5: five in five plan.
• 14:57
Speaker 2: You got to look at it from like a business
• 14:59
Speaker 2: then point, I don't want to pay you not to work,
• 15:03
Speaker 2: and then you lose the whole year. I lose the
• 15:06
Speaker 2: whole year as an employer. Then you transfer on me.
• 15:09
Speaker 2: So I done paid you a whole year, I got
• 15:10
Speaker 2: no production out of you on the field of court,
• 15:13
Speaker 2: and then you leave.
• 15:14
Speaker 5: But that was this. I mean even before money with scholarships,
• 15:17
Speaker 5: when you read shirted guys, you didn't get any productivity
• 15:19
Speaker 5: out of it. They didn't play.
• 15:20
Speaker 2: I mean, scholarships is relative. I mean, you know, what
• 15:23
Speaker 2: is the school really losing by giving you a scholarship?
• 15:26
Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, They're losing a room.
• 15:28
Speaker 5: So once again it comes down to mind.
• 15:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, And you know, like I said, and to
• 15:32
Speaker 2: your point, I think that, you know, it's got to
• 15:35
Speaker 2: be an emphasis on fit too, because it's like when
• 15:39
Speaker 2: you say it's definitely about the money, You're gonna follow
• 15:42
Speaker 2: the money, but it's also got to be emphasis on
• 15:45
Speaker 2: do I fit into this structure, this program, this offense,
• 15:49
Speaker 2: this defense. So I think that it's got to be
• 15:52
Speaker 2: a maybe a harder look at those things because if
• 15:55
Speaker 2: you don't and you find yourself not paying, they will
• 15:59
Speaker 2: cut you. Now it's not like they can. They got
• 16:01
Speaker 2: to hold you, yes, so they ain't got to keep you.
• 16:03
Speaker 4: And see, I'm so so glad that you brought that up,
• 16:08
Speaker 4: because the money may fit you, but you may not
• 16:13
Speaker 4: fit the program. You gotta fit the program, you know.
• 16:16
Speaker 4: And and and we've seen a whether it's quarterback, whether
• 16:22
  Speaker 4: it's a running back, whether it's a line and whatever.
• 16:24
Speaker 4: We've seen players go places and just not fit. And
• 16:28
Speaker 4: it doesn't have to be on the football field. It
• 16:30
Speaker 4: could be campus, it could be school, it could be
• 16:33
  Speaker 4: the socialization.
• 16:34
Speaker 5: Of it, nothing to do with talent, any.
• 16:38
Speaker 2: Of those kinds of things.
• 16:41
Speaker 4: So all I heard was as Hollis recruiting me was
• 16:46
  Speaker 4: ten million dollars.
• 16:48
Speaker 2: And and and the last offer I got was five.
• 16:52
Speaker 2: And so where am I gonna go?
• 16:54
Speaker 4: I'm going ten, but sure you are, and and Hollis
• 16:59
Speaker 4: is gonna give me ten. With the thought process, maybe
• 17:01
Speaker 4: even that I'm gonna play. I might even go out
• 17:06
Speaker 4: and play for Hollis and be really good. But I
• 17:09
Speaker 4: ain't got nothing happening on campus. I don't have nothing
• 17:13
Speaker 4: hanging out in the dorms like I just I don't
• 17:16
Speaker 4: fit like I don't have the you know, because everybody
• 17:19
Speaker 4: when you go to college when it's a it's important
• 17:23
Speaker 4: that you can be a part of a community, part
• 17:27
Speaker 4: of a community, and when you lose that, but I
• 17:30
Speaker 4: think we're losing that.
• 17:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think we lost that. We're losing that
• 17:35
Speaker 2: even outside of athletics, when you take like online school
• 17:38
Speaker 2: and just the accessibility factor versus college experience, because those
• 17:42
Speaker 2: are sort of two different things. Those are really we're
• 17:45
Speaker 2: talking about. You know, when we talk about that college experience,
• 17:48
Speaker 2: you're talking about academics and education, and I think to
• 17:52
Speaker 2: that part of it, I think the focus now with
• 17:54
Speaker 2: the accessibility portion online is strictly just about academics, and
• 17:58
Speaker 2: with the athletic portion is just becoming about money. So
• 18:01
Speaker 2: we're losing that experience. So, like I said, I think
• 18:06
Speaker 2: maybe in some regards to this is a way to
• 18:09
Speaker 2: make sure that if I have five years at the
• 18:12
Speaker 2: very least, I can go to the school that fits me.
• 18:14
Speaker 2: It may not be the big time school, but I
• 18:16
Speaker 2: might be there for two and three years and enjoy
• 18:18
Speaker 2: myself and then go get the bag. So maybe this
• 18:21
Speaker 2: is a way to you know, sort of supplement that
• 18:23
Speaker 2: to give kids more time to figure it out as
• 18:27
Speaker 2: opposed to just going from place to place to place
• 18:29
Speaker 2: based on opportunity and or money. You know.
• 18:32
Speaker 5: And to your point, Karl and you made some really
• 18:34
Speaker 5: good points to Hollis, But you know, the social aspects
• 18:38
Speaker 5: of college, those don't exist like they did back when
• 18:40
Speaker 5: we were in school. Just what you said with technology,
• 18:43
Speaker 5: I mean, you know, if you go away to school,
• 18:47
Speaker 5: you really social media is there. I mean you have relationships,
• 18:50
Speaker 5: you can FaceTime people, you can you know, get online,
• 18:54
Speaker 5: you can check out their whatever account and see, you know,
• 18:57
Speaker 5: how they're doing. I mean kids today, even in high school,
• 19:00
Speaker 5: and we've seen that, you know, kids cross lines that
• 19:02
Speaker 5: there's not the rivalries like there used to be. Their buddies,
• 19:05
Speaker 5: they all know each other. I mean, I think technology
• 19:07
Speaker 5: and social media has just kind of changed that whole world.
• 19:10
  Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
• 19:12
Speaker 4: Am I hearing that social media and a lot of
• 19:16
Speaker 4: those types of venues.
• 19:20
  Speaker 2: That that's accessible.
• 19:23
Speaker 4: Even Is that even attacking the sports realm of sure?
• 19:29
  Speaker 2: For sure? I mean as a kid, I mean, he's
• 19:32
Speaker 2: a quarterback. He's been in like six different schools, and
• 19:35
Speaker 2: I would guess some of that is just you know,
• 19:38
Speaker 2: maybe relationships he has with like coaches or players at
• 19:41
Speaker 2: those various stops. So I think like just the the
• 19:46
Speaker 2: tradition of what we've known has the collegiate experience. Collectively,
• 19:52
Speaker 2: we're like holding on to that by a thread, right,
• 19:55
Speaker 2: And I think even to the lower schools, they probably
• 19:58
Speaker 2: are going to offer much more of a collegiate experience
• 20:01
Speaker 2: than maybe even some of the bigger schools. Just how
• 20:04
Speaker 2: it goes and the numbers and everything like that. So
• 20:07
Speaker 2: I think again, I think this could be a way
• 20:10
Speaker 2: to sort of supplement that, to give kids just a
• 20:12
Speaker 2: little bit more time to figure it out so they're
• 20:15
Speaker 2: not in arrested transfer. But you know, all in all,
• 20:18
Speaker 2: you know, things have changed, and it's just and it's
• 20:21
Speaker 2: just a shame because and I ain't trying to get
• 20:24
Speaker 2: on my sepbox. But that's why we need to maintain
• 20:26
Speaker 2: the traditions of college sports. But we need we need
• 20:29
Speaker 2: to maintain our rivalries. We need to make sure that
• 20:32
Speaker 2: these schools are in the correct conference, because this is
• 20:35
Speaker 2: all you have now, you know what I mean, when
• 20:37
Speaker 2: you're not having like schools like like UCLA and USC
• 20:41
Speaker 2: may not play or or WVU and pitt ain't playing
• 20:44
Speaker 2: for three or four years, it's like, we need to
• 20:46
Speaker 2: make sure that we do everything else to at the
• 20:49
Speaker 2: very least hold on to the traditions that we have.
• 20:51
Speaker 4: And Okay, so to that point, we know sports is
• 20:55
Speaker 4: about money. How do you not continue those types of
• 21:01
Speaker 4: rivalries like a WVU Pitt WVU Penn State, like those
• 21:06
Speaker 4: kinds of and even even more so, not that it's
• 21:10
Speaker 4: it's becoming or really never been a big rivalry, but
• 21:14
Speaker 4: WVU and Marshall like, there's opportunity there to make money.
• 21:22
Speaker 4: Why would you is there? How do we get away
• 21:25
Speaker 4: from How do we get away from those? Like why
• 21:27
Speaker 4: would you want to get away from that? Like why
• 21:29
Speaker 4: would you like break from that?
• 21:30
Speaker 5: I don't think that that most schools want to do that.
• 21:33
Speaker 5: I think conference realignments have have played a huge role in,
• 21:37
Speaker 5: you know, the impact on rivalry games because you've got
• 21:40
Speaker 5: these schools going to different conferences, just like when Pitt
• 21:42
Speaker 5: and when the BEG East is you know, Pitt went
• 21:45
Speaker 5: to the ACC and W's in the Big twelve, and
• 21:48
Speaker 5: so scheduling becomes more difficult when you're not in the
• 21:51
  Speaker 5: same conference.
• 21:53
Speaker 4: God, if you're when you know, if you know that's
• 21:57
Speaker 4: going to happen, like why would you like and I
• 21:59
Speaker 4: and I get that's everything is about money, but how
• 22:02
Speaker 4: do you walk away from those types?
• 22:04
Speaker 2: But but I agree with you though, cause I think
• 22:07
Speaker 2: we you know, maining maintaining tradition will bring in revenue
• 22:11
Speaker 2: all the time. So I think, really, I would really
• 22:14
Speaker 2: really like to see again. I keep mentioning their name,
• 22:17
  Speaker 2: the n double the n C double A and the
• 22:20
Speaker 2: and the conferences and the presidents really get together and
• 22:23
Speaker 2: just have a common sense conversation, like everything isn't about
• 22:27
Speaker 2: short term money, right because like I said, you know,
• 22:31
Speaker 2: like in the next few years, who is WVU playing
• 22:34
Speaker 2: that we're really passionate about. Like we're not West Virginians,
• 22:39
Speaker 2: We're not We're not passionate about Kansas. I mean the
• 22:42
Speaker 2: w BU is rolling and they're doing good. Yeah, we
• 22:44
Speaker 2: want to see and win No da da, but we're
• 22:45
Speaker 2: not like it. It's not going to give you to
• 22:48
Speaker 2: feel like the backyard brawl or playing for the Black
• 22:50
Speaker 2: Diamond Trophy with Vtex, Like we don't we're not excited
• 22:54
Speaker 2: about that. You're not gonna you're not gonna look at
• 22:57
Speaker 2: when they when they post the schedule. You're not gonna
• 23:00
Speaker 2: look or you're looking for those teams you're looking for
• 23:03
Speaker 2: those games got the.
• 23:08
Speaker 5: Blue like you, Pit Game, the big game is the
• 23:11
  Speaker 5: highlights the season.
• 23:13
Speaker 2: But Game one two, Game two, three two.
• 23:16
Speaker 5: Maybe it was three. That was three because they went
• 23:18
Speaker 5: to Ohio. You're right, and.
• 23:19
  Speaker 4: Without those I don't care. Like you said, I don't
• 23:23
Speaker 4: care who's coming in. But if you don't have that
• 23:26
Speaker 4: that natural rivalry that you you know that you absolutely
• 23:31
Speaker 4: hate that team. On the other side, we just know
• 23:33
Speaker 4: that it's that team, yes, and we play in them,
• 23:36
Speaker 4: we hope we win. That's not pit That's not Penn State,
• 23:40
Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying. That's not who you like
• 23:44
Speaker 4: go in hating that team.
• 23:45
  Speaker 5: And it's like I said, it's conference realignments. You've got
• 23:48
Speaker 5: Penn State and a different conference. You've got Virginia Tech
• 23:51
Speaker 5: over here and Pitt and and Big twelve is way
• 23:54
  Speaker 5: out west. I mean, it's just it's it's a matter
• 23:56
Speaker 5: of logistics and being able to schedule those teams outside
• 24:00
Speaker 5: of your conference play, and it's hard to do.
• 24:02
Speaker 2: And again that's another boy, I'm glad you brought that up,
• 24:05
Speaker 2: because that's like another point. If I'm the college president
• 24:07
Speaker 2: and if I'm the a D I'm trying to figure out, like, hey,
• 24:11
Speaker 2: we need to regionalize this because even because I have
• 24:14
  Speaker 2: to spend money on n I L I don't have
• 24:16
Speaker 2: the money to travel. And the thing is, we only
• 24:18
Speaker 2: think about the football team, where you have what you know,
• 24:21
Speaker 2: five or six away games. Let's think about the basketball team,
• 24:25
Speaker 2: the softball, the lacrosse teams, the tennis teams. Where you
• 24:29
Speaker 2: got a tennis team having to go to Texas possibly
• 24:33
Speaker 2: to play in a match. So I'm thinking like I
• 24:36
Speaker 2: would really look, even if we're not going to do
• 24:38
Speaker 2: the conferences or whatever the deal with that is, I
• 24:41
Speaker 2: would almost like us to get rid of the conferences
• 24:44
Speaker 2: and just go to a regional system. Yes, just go
• 24:47
Speaker 2: to a regional system. This is what one of us,
• 24:50
Speaker 2: but I think we need to do something.
• 24:52
Speaker 5: I agree with. But it's about money.
• 24:54
Speaker 2: It's costs. I mean, how much is travel calls?
• 24:56
Speaker 5: I mean for the schools. But it's crazy for the conferences.
• 24:58
Speaker 5: I mean, you know, especially you've got the SEC that
• 25:02
Speaker 5: takes teams from different conferences. It seems like they're growing
• 25:04
Speaker 5: every year. It feels like they took teams from the
• 25:06
Speaker 5: Big twelve. They just keep expanding their their little kingdom.
• 25:10
Speaker 2: But within their region. Though, because they can almost drive.
• 25:13
Speaker 2: LSU could almost drive every game.
• 25:15
Speaker 5: Yeah that they also have Texas right, Yeah, but.
• 25:17
Speaker 2: That's right there, and they could potentially that could be
• 25:20
  Speaker 2: a drive.
• 25:20
Speaker 4: Yeah, they could drive one day, rest, another day practice
• 25:24
Speaker 4: and play. Yeah, and they got that kind of money
• 25:26
Speaker 4: to if they, like I said, if they even again,
• 25:29
Speaker 4: if they take a bus, even if they were to drive,
• 25:32
Speaker 4: they could make that work and still become I.
• 25:35
Speaker 2: Bet LSU and Alabama don't got an over three hour
• 25:38
Speaker 2: flight to play a game.
• 25:40
Speaker 5: That's probably true. No, I just think West Virginia was
• 25:43
Speaker 5: an outside fit for the Big Twelve. The rest of
• 25:46
Speaker 5: the Big Twelve teams are all kind of regional, aren't they.
• 25:48
Speaker 5: And West Virginia we're way over here on you know,
• 25:50
Speaker 5: on the East Coast practically, and they're all out west.
• 25:53
Speaker 5: And so you know that that that was a decision
• 25:57
Speaker 5: maybe that the administration should have thought more about whenever
• 26:00
Speaker 5: they went into the Big Twelve. But I don't think
• 26:02
Speaker 5: they had a choice at the time.
• 26:03
Speaker 2: I didn't have a choice, an I had to go somewhere,
• 26:05
Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. I think just the higher powers
• 26:07
Speaker 2: need to step in and just kind of figure this
• 26:09
Speaker 2: thing out. So like I said, you don't need like
• 26:11
Speaker 2: USC and the Big ten playing like, come on, man,
• 26:15
  Speaker 2: all right.
• 26:15
Speaker 4: Now, So I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna kind of
• 26:20
Speaker 4: stick stick a pin in this one.
• 26:24
Speaker 2: So are we are? We? Do we have student athletes?
• 26:29
  Speaker 4: Now?
• 26:29
  Speaker 6: Like?
• 26:30
Speaker 4: Are they are? Are they student athletes? Because when's the last?
• 26:34
Speaker 4: Has anybody ever heard of a student a superstar player
• 26:39
Speaker 4: that flunked out of school or had some had some issues?
• 26:43
Speaker 4: Have you heard of a starter on any school flunk
• 26:47
Speaker 4: out ineligible because of it's great?
• 26:52
  Speaker 5: I can't remember.
• 26:53
Speaker 4: So are they better students than we used to be?
• 26:57
Speaker 4: Or is that no longer a thing?
• 27:02
  Speaker 2: I don't think it's any longer a thing.
• 27:03
Speaker 5: I mean it's tied to scholarship eligibility, not pay, right,
• 27:07
  Speaker 5: I mean.
• 27:08
Speaker 2: It's just pay because if you're paying this guy umpteen
• 27:11
Speaker 2: hundreds of thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars,
• 27:14
Speaker 2: th ain't failing. That can't happen. Okay, But when you
• 27:19
Speaker 2: say that, are you saying that because I can't fail?
• 27:23
  Speaker 2: Or we're not gonna let that. I think it's it's
• 27:26
Speaker 2: two ways. It's like you're not gonna let that happen again.
• 27:28
Speaker 2: I'm not accusing anybody of improprieties. And what I'm saying
• 27:31
Speaker 2: is that you know, you're gonna provide the tutors the
• 27:34
Speaker 2: time necessary for that person, an athlete, to make sure
• 27:38
Speaker 2: they can get their work done. And like I said,
• 27:41
Speaker 2: you have accessibility now where a lot of the informations online,
• 27:45
Speaker 2: So I don't have to go search for this information.
• 27:49
Speaker 2: I can go chat, GPT, grammarly claude, I can go
• 27:53
Speaker 2: to the AI and I can go find it. So
• 27:55
Speaker 2: it's not a matter of me like searching for the information,
• 27:58
Speaker 2: just choosing which one sounds the.
• 28:00
Speaker 5: You're gonna protect your investment.
• 28:02
Speaker 4: So so so so are you making the case too
• 28:05
Speaker 4: that that social media itself, technology technology, technology technology in
• 28:14
Speaker 4: general has taken the pressure off of the school, the coach,
• 28:22
Speaker 4: the athlete from even have to even so so that
• 28:27
Speaker 4: that's why we don't hear anymore about an athlete who
• 28:31
Speaker 4: is struggling academically, because that was a that was somewhat
• 28:34
Speaker 4: of a regular thing back in the day.
• 28:36
  Speaker 2: But even it's I mean, I like, I mean, not.
• 28:39
Speaker 4: Even a whisper anything of anybody. And there's got to
• 28:43
Speaker 4: be somebody who has to be like me, you know,
• 28:47
Speaker 4: And again even but even even outside of even outside
• 28:50
Speaker 4: of if I'm the if I'm the athletic department, I'm
• 28:54
Speaker 4: going to invest time in tutors.
• 28:56
Speaker 2: Like that's a full time job. I'm not like if
• 28:58
Speaker 2: I'm paying even if I'm paying you fifty grand or
• 29:01
Speaker 2: forty grand a year, you're gonna have a tutor for
• 29:04
Speaker 2: these for my athletic department. So you're not failing regardless
• 29:08
Speaker 2: because you're gonna have all the help and time. If
• 29:10
Speaker 2: you got to miss practice, if you got to do
• 29:11
Speaker 2: this to make sure it straight, it's straight. So I think,
• 29:14
Speaker 2: and like I said, these are employees now, and as employee,
• 29:17
Speaker 2: your responsibility to get your grades if you want to
• 29:19
Speaker 2: get the money. So if somebody if you've got six
• 29:21
Speaker 2: figures hanging over your head as a nineteen year old,
• 29:24
Speaker 2: you ain't flunking tho classes. I can guarantee you.
• 29:27
Speaker 5: And the other part is probably during the season, guys,
• 29:30
Speaker 5: I mean they probably do all online classes. I mean
• 29:33
  Speaker 5: I'm sure that that's a that's you know, that's available
• 29:36
Speaker 5: to them, and so they just do that and they
• 29:38
Speaker 5: can travel to their different games and do their classes online.
• 29:41
  Speaker 5: I mean, they're they're there for all students. But that's
• 29:43
Speaker 5: probably what they do in the you know, during their
• 29:46
  Speaker 5: athletic season.
• 29:47
Speaker 2: All right, cats a kiddings.

• 31:14
Speaker 3: Now back to the conversation.
• 31:16
Speaker 2: So, if you had a choice of playing sports in
• 31:21
  Speaker 2: your era.
• 31:23
Speaker 4: Versus sports today, would you would you prefer to stay
• 31:30
Speaker 4: in your own era or would you rather be intoday's environment?
• 31:36
Speaker 4: For me, I would go back. I'd stay home. I'd
• 31:40
Speaker 4: go back into the seventies and eighties. I'm staying there
• 31:45
Speaker 4: because to me, it was it was clean, it was clear,
• 31:53
Speaker 4: and I just I just appreciated the work that you
• 31:56
Speaker 4: have to put in, not saying that there's no work
• 31:58
Speaker 4: put in today, just saying I just I just liked
• 32:01
Speaker 4: how it was and the competition. The man demand competition
• 32:05
Speaker 4: and winning it, losing it, accepting it, and keep working.
• 32:09
Speaker 5: You like the system.
• 32:10
Speaker 4: I like the system. I liked the system of what
• 32:13
Speaker 4: it was before. I would not want to be in
• 32:16
  Speaker 4: today's structure.
• 32:19
  Speaker 5: That's a tough one because it's a double edged sword.
• 32:20
Speaker 5: I mean, I liked the loyalty of athletes during my
• 32:25
Speaker 5: time to a school because that school actively recruited them,
• 32:28
Speaker 5: gave them a scholarship, an opportunity to go to school.
• 32:32
Speaker 5: You know, there were repercussions if you decided to jump ship.
• 32:35
Speaker 5: You know, you had to sit out a year. So
• 32:36
Speaker 5: that kind of deterred a lot of athletes from jumping
• 32:39
Speaker 5: from school to school at that time, and so they
• 32:41
Speaker 5: developed relationships. You knew the player's names, you knew who
• 32:45
Speaker 5: they were because they'd been at that school for two
• 32:46
Speaker 5: or three years playing for your team. Perfect example, the
• 32:50
Speaker 5: Marshall team back in the nineties. I mean, when you
• 32:52
Speaker 5: had Pennington and all of them together. We've talked about
• 32:54
Speaker 5: that before. But the other part of it is, you know,
• 32:57
Speaker 5: you didn't get paid, and you know a lot of
• 33:00
Speaker 5: these guys aren't going to make it to the next level.
• 33:02
Speaker 5: Let's just face it. And so they need to take
• 33:04
Speaker 5: the money right now while they can get it, yeah,
• 33:07
Speaker 5: to be able to you know, support what kind of
• 33:10
Speaker 5: whatever kind of future they have outside of football. So
• 33:13
  Speaker 5: I mean, it's it's for me. I liked the old
• 33:16
Speaker 5: school ways because I'm an old school person, you know.
• 33:18
Speaker 5: But today's generation, in today's society, you know, this is
• 33:23
Speaker 5: the new normal, and they're being paid and probably rightly so.
• 33:27
Speaker 5: These colleges, these universities have cleaned up for years, uh
• 33:31
Speaker 5: you know, financially on the play of these athletes, and
• 33:34
  Speaker 5: they didn't see a dom So I don't know. But
• 33:38
Speaker 5: for me, yes, old.
• 33:39
Speaker 2: School for me, I would love to be in this generation.
• 33:43
Speaker 2: Not it has nothing to do with money. The access
• 33:46
Speaker 2: to information, like I would go on such deep dives
• 33:52
Speaker 2: that as a quarterback plan in this generation once I
• 33:55
Speaker 2: really like understood the mechanics and you know, just how
• 33:59
Speaker 2: to operate as a quarterback. If I had this level
• 34:02
Speaker 2: of information. Again, I'm not trying to progress into where
• 34:08
Speaker 2: I would be, but if I but if I, if
• 34:09
Speaker 2: I could just sit on my phone and nerd out
• 34:12
Speaker 2: and really do deep dives and understand even beyond what
• 34:17
Speaker 2: my offensive coach or whoever is given me trying to
• 34:21
Speaker 2: like just understanding on a deep almost molecular, molecular level,
• 34:25
Speaker 2: like I would be unstoppable like you wouldn't. I would be.
• 34:28
  Speaker 5: Access I would.
• 34:31
Speaker 2: Access to information at like I said, just on some
• 34:35
Speaker 2: quarterback stuff, not only just the training stuff, but just
• 34:37
Speaker 2: understanding coverages, understanding offenses, having the ability to go on
• 34:43
Speaker 2: my phone to huddle and break down a defense and
• 34:47
Speaker 2: look at what that safety is doing for the last
• 34:50
Speaker 2: twenty games, Like I would be unstoppable at just at
• 34:55
Speaker 2: a brain level on the field.
• 34:57
Speaker 4: Okay, to to your point, I have to give credit
• 35:04
Speaker 4: to every piece of my success at the next level NFL,
• 35:13
Speaker 4: to Pete Carroll, who that the things that you're talking
• 35:17
Speaker 4: about online type stuff. He taught us to do film
• 35:23
Speaker 4: work somewhat in that same venue. What does the quarter
• 35:29
Speaker 4: What is the quarterback's motion movements when he's throwing the
• 35:33
Speaker 4: ball versus when he's gonna hand it off.
• 35:37
Speaker 2: What is the receiver?
• 35:38
Speaker 4: What is he doing when he releases outside? What is
• 35:40
Speaker 4: he doing when he releases inside? What are the routes
• 35:43
Speaker 4: that he's running? Just and you when you when you
• 35:47
Speaker 4: know every time he's gone outside it's a deep ball. Yeah,
• 35:53
Speaker 4: then when he goes outside in the game, you know,
• 35:56
Speaker 4: it's a deep ball. And and that's the thing, Like,
• 35:59
Speaker 4: no matter what level of sports your plane. So even
• 36:02
Speaker 4: if you do two D three, once you get to
• 36:04
Speaker 4: that level, everybody talent wise is pretty much the same.
• 36:07
Speaker 4: The separator is who can process that, who has access
• 36:11
Speaker 4: to the inform information, who can process the information?
• 36:14
Speaker 2: And I was good at processing. I just didn't understand
• 36:17
Speaker 2: how to study it because we you know, we just
• 36:20
Speaker 2: didn't have that sort of thing in the nineties. I
• 36:22
Speaker 2: didn't understand how to study it from that perspective. But
• 36:25
Speaker 2: just having access and realizing how to study that information,
• 36:29
Speaker 2: it was nothing to be able to do it.
• 36:31
Speaker 4: Basically saying that if you understood who to look at,
• 36:36
Speaker 4: who to read to try to figure out what covers.
• 36:38
Speaker 2: The nuances, Yes, I mean like okay to your point,
• 36:42
Speaker 2: like that, okay, that when they're going cover to their
• 36:45
Speaker 2: backfoot is this way when they when they blitzing, they
• 36:47
Speaker 2: chest is this way when they you know what I'm saying,
• 36:49
Speaker 2: It's like those little things, this is how they gonna
• 36:52
Speaker 2: jump discount, this is how they're gonna do that. Like
• 36:54
Speaker 2: like understanding those little things and like once you get
• 36:57
Speaker 2: into those deep interviews, with like Drew Brees and Brady
• 37:01
Speaker 2: and Peyton Manny. They break it down from that level.
• 37:04
Speaker 2: It's not necessarily just discoverage that coach. They're looking at
• 37:07
Speaker 2: like how you align, and like how you breathe and
• 37:10
Speaker 2: how you talking. You know what I'm saying, whether you
• 37:11
Speaker 2: look and left or right. They break it down like that.
• 37:14
Speaker 2: And if you have that level of information and you
• 37:16
Speaker 2: have the ability to process that information, man, you understopped.
• 37:20
Speaker 2: You cannot be stopped.
• 37:22
Speaker 5: So let me let me throw this at both of
• 37:24
Speaker 5: you guys talking about being able to you know, the
• 37:26
Speaker 5: the ability that you have now to access all of
• 37:30
Speaker 5: the different things with technology as far as what you're saying,
• 37:33
Speaker 5: being able to study film, know the different ins and
• 37:36
Speaker 5: outs of you know, different play calling and such and players.
• 37:40
Speaker 5: Do you think the role of the head coach has
• 37:43
Speaker 5: been diminished to a degree because of this access? Do
• 37:46
Speaker 5: you feel like now the role of the head coach
• 37:49
Speaker 5: is to be not only a good recruiter to bring
• 37:53
Speaker 5: in these players, but also more of a motivator rather
• 37:56
Speaker 5: than a teacher, because you've got all like you could
• 37:59
Speaker 5: be a meeting coach, but have all the access to
• 38:02
Speaker 5: all this technology you're talking about to be able to
• 38:04
Speaker 5: teach players the fundamentals or whatever it is that you
• 38:07
Speaker 5: want to show them film study. But that can take
• 38:10
Speaker 5: the place of like a Pete Carroll because now you
• 38:13
Speaker 5: can access all of that online. So really what you
• 38:16
Speaker 5: want him to do is to be the motivator and
• 38:19
Speaker 5: to be able to glue the team together. Do you
• 38:22
Speaker 5: understand the question I'm asking.
• 38:24
Speaker 2: I'll let you go, but I think it's the exact opposite,
• 38:27
Speaker 2: because now, like if you're talking about a high school coach,
• 38:30
Speaker 2: you're talking about a college because it's different for the NFL.
• 38:33
Speaker 2: But if you're talk about high school and college, number one,
• 38:34
Speaker 2: I have to teach you how to watch that and right,
• 38:37
Speaker 2: and I have to be so detail oriented that I
• 38:41
Speaker 2: have to make sure everything is almost in sync and perfect.
• 38:44
  Speaker 2: It's sort of like a Nick Saban like, I don't
• 38:47
Speaker 2: necessarily have to do as much on that end, but
• 38:50
Speaker 2: I want to make sure we line it up correct.
• 38:52
Speaker 2: I want to make sure everything is perfect. I want
• 38:54
Speaker 2: to make sure that your uniform is perfect. I want
• 38:57
Speaker 2: to make everything we do and it's so detailed, because
• 39:00
Speaker 2: what can happen is if you do have access to
• 39:03
Speaker 2: that information, you can start to think you know everything
• 39:06
Speaker 2: and now not that I want to bring you down,
• 39:09
Speaker 2: but I want to make sure that we're or just
• 39:12
Speaker 2: hard on focus on the details of everything, and the
• 39:16
Speaker 2: other end of that, you're almost having to play like, uh,
• 39:19
Speaker 2: you know, you have to be like a face of
• 39:21
Speaker 2: a program because now I gotta as a head coach,
• 39:24
Speaker 2: I have to generate revenue for my program. So I
• 39:27
Speaker 2: gotta go do commercials. I gotta go shake hands and
• 39:29
Speaker 2: kiss babies. I gotta go be at this gallon and
• 39:31
Speaker 2: that galla. So I gotta go be at these things
• 39:33
Speaker 2: so I can build relationships to make sure that I
• 39:36
Speaker 2: can keep the dollars coming into your program. You got
• 39:39
Speaker 2: to be the face of the school. And I think,
• 39:41
Speaker 2: and I think, and that's a valid point.
• 39:42
Speaker 4: And I think blaming the head coach for the wins
• 39:46
Speaker 4: and losses all the time isn't necessarily true because the
• 39:51
Speaker 4: expectation that you have of him to do all these things,
• 39:56
Speaker 4: they don't necessarily give him the opportunity to be down
• 39:59
Speaker 4: on the field doing all the x's and o's and
• 40:02
Speaker 4: teaching a position himself.
• 40:05
Speaker 2: Like, but you ain't got time to do that? Had time?
• 40:09
  Speaker 6: You know?
• 40:10
Speaker 4: That's where you hires. Yeah, And and unfortunately you may,
• 40:14
Speaker 4: and I don't know how, maybe not a good way
• 40:17
Speaker 4: to say this. But so when you start hiring that
• 40:20
Speaker 4: buddy on your staff and put it trying to put
• 40:25
Speaker 4: him somewhere in the secondary because that's easy to coach.
• 40:28
Speaker 4: Quote everybody thinks that's easy to coach. Or you put
• 40:32
Speaker 4: a buddy at quarterback. You put your buddy at quarterback.
• 40:36
Speaker 4: So now Hollis doesn't get all the true information that
• 40:41
Speaker 4: he could get if it was actually somebody who has
• 40:43
Speaker 4: studied quarterback, who maybe even played quarterback.
• 40:47
Speaker 2: That you can't do that. You can't do that now
• 40:50
Speaker 2: that there's too much money at play. And look at
• 40:55
Speaker 2: and at the other end, he was able to get
• 40:57
Speaker 2: to Pier State and look at that buyout.
• 41:00
  Speaker 5: Yeah he's.
• 41:06
  Speaker 2: I'm alright, I'm I'm cool. Yeah, I'm sad, but he's
• 41:10
Speaker 2: not in the poor line Jim bow Fisher what.
• 41:15
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you ain't got time.
• 41:19
  Speaker 2: I ain't got it, ain't nobody. But it's too much
• 41:20
Speaker 2: money on the line.
• 41:22
Speaker 5: Well, and I think too, like we're talking about the
• 41:24
Speaker 5: money and everything with these coaches. I think the lifeline
• 41:29
Speaker 5: for if you're at a program like Penn State or
• 41:32
Speaker 5: Alabama or you know, uh, you U s C or
• 41:35
Speaker 5: someone like that. Your lifeline is definitely not as long
• 41:39
Speaker 5: as a rich Rod at w BU. At least it
• 41:41
Speaker 5: shouldn't be, because you have access to probably the best
• 41:45
Speaker 5: players in the nation with n IL funds, with your alumni,
• 41:49
Speaker 5: with your everything, your facilities. You're not starting from scratch
• 41:53
Speaker 5: every year. You know, you're not having to to to
• 41:56
Speaker 5: you know, you're not losing all eighty players in one year.
• 41:58
Speaker 5: At Penn State. You may lose some, but not compared
• 42:02
Speaker 5: to like a Marshall or WU. So those guys need
• 42:05
Speaker 5: a little bit longer of a lifeline before we start
• 42:07
Speaker 5: putting them in hot seats. In my opinion, that's a
• 42:09
  Speaker 5: good point.
• 42:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point. And so I'm gonna ask
• 42:12
  Speaker 2: you this put.
• 42:13
Speaker 5: You on boy Harriet.
• 42:15
Speaker 2: So should the coaches have guaranteed contracts? Well, I think
• 42:22
Speaker 2: that the buyout sort of acts as that, right, I mean,
• 42:25
  Speaker 2: it's not like a you know, I don't think anybody.
• 42:28
  Speaker 2: I ain't gonna say anybody, but I don't know if
• 42:29
Speaker 2: we need guaranteed quote unquote contracts when you have a
• 42:32
Speaker 2: buy out at the end of it. Okay, But okay,
• 42:34
Speaker 2: so you can get compensated because those jobs aren't plentiful.
• 42:37
Speaker 2: So let's just put you at West Virginia State, right,
• 42:39
  Speaker 2: that's your school.
• 42:40
Speaker 4: You love that school, You're you're the head coach of
• 42:43
Speaker 4: that school. Wouldn't it be nice because you're if you
• 42:49
Speaker 4: go there, You're not necessarily going there quote for the money,
• 42:53
Speaker 4: You're going there because it's your school, you love it,
• 42:55
Speaker 4: blah blah blah blah. So wouldn't it be nice to
• 43:01
Speaker 4: think that you know for a fact you're gonna get
• 43:04
Speaker 4: you four years in there.
• 43:05
  Speaker 2: I mean, I would say to Lisa's point, I mean,
• 43:08
Speaker 2: if you're going to a school like yeah, yeah, maybe yeah,
• 43:11
  Speaker 2: I mean I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to that. I'm
• 43:14
Speaker 2: thinking when you ask the question, I'm thinking more like
• 43:16
Speaker 2: the bigger programs. But I mean, if you're going to
• 43:19
Speaker 2: a smaller program than yeah, I mean, that's not necessarily
• 43:21
  Speaker 2: a bad thing. But again, I can't guarantee you a
• 43:24
Speaker 2: contract if I'm at that smaller school, because if something
• 43:27
Speaker 2: egregious happens or well, I'm getting sure that'd be probably
• 43:31
Speaker 2: within the content. But if something happens, even if it's
• 43:33
Speaker 2: not egregious, even if it doesn't quote on break contract,
• 43:36
  Speaker 2: that I don't like that's a fireable offense. Then now
• 43:39
Speaker 2: I owe you this rest of this year's and I
• 43:41
Speaker 2: maybe can't afford to take the hit and hire a
• 43:43
Speaker 2: new coast, so financially it could pit me in a
• 43:45
Speaker 2: buying potentially, is what I'm saying.
• 43:47
Speaker 4: If I'm the school, see I'm thinking some of these
• 43:49
Speaker 4: bigger schools, when you're talking about these notable named coaches,
• 43:56
Speaker 4: I could easily see we're gonna guarantee you four years
• 44:01
Speaker 4: to give you an opportunity to turn around, to turn
• 44:03
  Speaker 4: the program around.
• 44:04
Speaker 2: You can't turn the program around there a couple of years.
• 44:06
Speaker 5: I think it's still happening do you know think it's
• 44:08
  Speaker 5: happening now when.
• 44:08
Speaker 4: You're not when coaches not when coaches has guaranteed contracts
• 44:12
Speaker 4: per se. And I think, I think when you start
• 44:14
Speaker 4: talking about it, when you start talking about a coach
• 44:16
Speaker 4: who you're you're you're talking about firing in two years,
• 44:20
Speaker 4: after two years, after three years, how many years do
• 44:24
Speaker 4: you think it's gonna take to rebuild a team.
• 44:27
Speaker 2: But now I mean again with the transfer port on
• 44:30
Speaker 2: all that, that maybe goes from four years to two
• 44:33
Speaker 2: years because now I.
• 44:34
Speaker 4: Can get those no experience. I'm gonna challenge you on this. Okay,
• 44:39
Speaker 4: so you you you you've you've got a bad program.
• 44:43
Speaker 4: You haven't really won what may what makes you think
• 44:46
Speaker 4: that you can call me from w b U to come.
• 44:50
Speaker 2: To State because maybe I can offer you not State.
• 44:54
Speaker 2: No said that ain't.
• 45:00
Speaker 4: Work, but I thought you talking about like a okay, okay,
• 45:04
Speaker 4: So so I can be at State and and now
• 45:08
Speaker 4: I'm gonna go to WVU because WU wants me because
• 45:12
Speaker 4: of however good I think I had been at wes
• 45:16
  Speaker 4: Frod State. How's do you think that's that's gonna that's
• 45:19
  Speaker 4: a possibility.
• 45:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, because if you got the money, if I if
• 45:22
  Speaker 2: I ain't making no money at school A, and I'm
• 45:25
Speaker 2: going to school B, and I can make a bigger bag.
• 45:27
  Speaker 2: To Lisa's point, I don't know.
• 45:30
Speaker 5: Go ahead, no, No, I was just gonna make a point
• 45:33
Speaker 5: about with the portal, I think it's going to be
• 45:35
Speaker 5: really difficult for those types of coaches that are at
• 45:38
Speaker 5: that level to climb the ladder, so to speak. Because
• 45:41
Speaker 5: let's just say, you know they're a great coach and
• 45:43
Speaker 5: they have a winning season. What's going to happen next year?
• 45:46
Speaker 5: Here comes the big schools are going to sweep in
• 45:47
Speaker 5: and take your your best players, and so you had
• 45:50
Speaker 5: that one winning season and next year you might you know,
• 45:53
Speaker 5: lay an egg because you've got brand new kids coming in.
• 45:55
Speaker 5: So it's gonna be hard for them to show consistent
• 45:58
Speaker 5: winning abilities to be able to go from point you know,
• 46:02
Speaker 5: C to point A because of the of you know,
• 46:06
Speaker 5: just the realities of money and players. Does that make sense?
• 46:10
  Speaker 2: You take that?
• 46:10
Speaker 4: You take the top twenty schools, right, coaches, Yeah, you
• 46:15
Speaker 4: take the top twenty schools, the bottom twenty. Every great
• 46:19
Speaker 4: player on the bottom twenty. Whole goal is to get
• 46:24
Speaker 4: to the top twenty exactly, and so every other year,
• 46:28
Speaker 4: every I'm gonna have to find another one of a
• 46:32
Speaker 4: potential top twenty players.
• 46:34
Speaker 2: I think it's an art in that too, And it's
• 46:36
Speaker 2: like you could take those diamonds in the rough because
• 46:39
Speaker 2: I think what's happening now we're seeing it in college
• 46:42
Speaker 2: I'd say sports, is that you're seeing a lot more
• 46:45
Speaker 2: parody because now Alabama can't stack players. Usc they're not
• 46:50
Speaker 2: stacking players. Ohio State you don't get to stack players.
• 46:53
Speaker 2: So now I can go and I may be able
• 46:55
Speaker 2: to find that third stream running back at Ohio State
• 46:58
Speaker 2: or who are there, and I can convince him to
• 47:01
Speaker 2: come down maybe for a year or two. So I
• 47:03
Speaker 2: think that again, it's gonna be just like it was
• 47:05
Speaker 2: an art in recruiting high school kids. It's an art
• 47:08
Speaker 2: in recruiting that trend. Again, I don't know that art,
• 47:10
Speaker 2: but I'm saying it's an art and doing that too.
• 47:12
Speaker 2: So I'm thinking, even if I lose said players, I
• 47:15
Speaker 2: can start to replenish this once I understand what I'm doing.
• 47:18
  Speaker 2: And if I'm a school with a reputation that I
• 47:21
Speaker 2: get guys up. Then So if I'm a school like
• 47:24
Speaker 2: if I'm State for example, and my reputation is that
• 47:27
Speaker 2: after two years with me, then I got guys going
• 47:29
Speaker 2: Power five, then that's recruiting to it. That's recruit people.
• 47:33
Speaker 2: So I take notice of that. So it's you know, and.
• 47:36
Speaker 4: Isn't that a crazy thought process though, that you're that
• 47:39
Speaker 4: you're recruiting trick If you want to say that is.
• 47:45
Speaker 5: Come here to a different school.
• 47:47
Speaker 4: I can get you to a good another school. I mean,
• 47:49
Speaker 4: that's give me two years. What it is, give me
• 47:52
Speaker 4: two years at the quarterback, and I guarantee you I
• 47:55
Speaker 4: can get you somewhere if you do this.
• 47:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that again, that could be something. I'm
• 47:59
Speaker 2: not saying this is specifically, but you know, it's one
• 48:02
Speaker 2: of them things that you know.
• 48:03
Speaker 5: Whole landscape of college football is different, Like it's hard
• 48:07
Speaker 5: to wrap your mind around the way things were versus
• 48:10
Speaker 5: the way they are now. Because even your coaching tactics,
• 48:14
Speaker 5: like what holis same here, which makes total sense is
• 48:17
Speaker 5: to get kids there because I can get you to Alabama.
• 48:20
Speaker 5: I can get you, you know, not to the NFL
• 48:23
Speaker 5: in Alabama, I can get you to Yeah. So I
• 48:25
Speaker 5: mean it's crazy because it used to be I could
• 48:27
Speaker 5: get you in the draft. Now it's I'll get you
• 48:29
Speaker 5: to a better school.
• 48:30
Speaker 4: As much as I hate to admit this, that's probably
• 48:33
Speaker 4: the smartest thing that is. It fired, I'll give you
• 48:37
Speaker 4: another weight, but that is legitimately the.
• 48:42
  Speaker 5: Most It's a good point.
• 48:43
Speaker 4: That is the best point and justification of why I
• 48:48
Speaker 4: would work that way.
• 48:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it could. I'm not I'm not even
• 48:51
Speaker 2: saying it's the best way. I'm just saying, like it's
• 48:53
Speaker 2: it's a way to do it. So I just quick,
• 48:55
Speaker 2: I know we're about to how much, but I wanted
• 49:00
Speaker 2: to give a shout out. I don't know if you
• 49:02
Speaker 2: guys watched the WNBA Finals last weekend. Asia Wilson, She's
• 49:06
Speaker 2: had probably the greatest season and I say almost basketball.
• 49:12
Speaker 2: She not only did they win the championship, she was
• 49:15
Speaker 2: the MVP of the league, Defensive Player of the Year
• 49:19
Speaker 2: in finals MVP, and I think she led the league
• 49:22
Speaker 2: in points, blocks and maybe another stat. So so she
• 49:27
Speaker 2: just had like one of the greatest seasons. And if
• 49:30
Speaker 2: you watch the finals, I mean, she was just phenomenal
• 49:33
Speaker 2: and it was just it was a pleasure to watch.
• 49:35
Speaker 2: When we talk about like the old school news school
• 49:37
Speaker 2: we talked about, I'm definitely team old school when it
• 49:40
Speaker 2: comes to basketball, Like I hate modern basketball. It's not
• 49:43
Speaker 2: fun to watch. It's just guys running up and down
• 49:46
Speaker 2: the court, playing out of position. And to see somebody
• 49:49
Speaker 2: a big quote unquote with her back to the basket
• 49:52
Speaker 2: doing post moves, making shots, going up under and playing
• 49:56
Speaker 2: defense body control, she is phenomenal, know to watch MVP. Yeah, yeah,
• 50:04
  Speaker 2: so phenomenal.
• 50:05
Speaker 4: Is there is Can men's basketball impact women's basketball to
• 50:12
Speaker 4: the degree of mocking it becoming that way?
• 50:17
Speaker 2: Do you think it is about?
• 50:19
Speaker 4: Because to your point, to your point, I think if
• 50:24
Speaker 4: I were going to watch a basketball game, it would
• 50:26
  Speaker 4: be a w NBA.
• 50:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, And to me, she's the best player in the world.
• 50:29
Speaker 2: And when I said that, I think people were talking
• 50:31
Speaker 2: about like women. I mean, she's the best player in
• 50:33
Speaker 2: the world. She's the best basketball player on the planet
• 50:35
Speaker 2: right now, men, women, And I would say that with yeah,
• 50:40
Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. Not to say she's going
• 50:41
Speaker 2: to go out there and she can beat man. I'm
• 50:43
Speaker 2: not saying that, but I'm saying if in her respective
• 50:46
Speaker 2: basketball sport and league versus what I'm looking at from
• 50:50
Speaker 2: she is the absolute best player on the planet to
• 50:53
  Speaker 2: watch right now.
• 50:54
Speaker 4: Okay, So if you can say that, and I don't
• 50:57
Speaker 4: have a problem with it.
• 50:59
Speaker 2: She's playing her position old school, yeah, I mean, and you.
• 51:03
Speaker 4: Know, she's playing the big man down load, fundamental.
• 51:08
Speaker 2: Fundamentals of what we used to know. She's like Tim Duncan.
• 51:11
Speaker 2: If I had to compare her to somebody and she
• 51:13
Speaker 2: could go she can go to the three, she pop
• 51:15
Speaker 2: it from there. But she got soft touch around twenty
• 51:18
Speaker 2: feet and like I said, even the block shots, think
• 51:20
Speaker 2: she had like average like five or six block shots
• 51:23
Speaker 2: during the championship game a series, but even like they
• 51:26
Speaker 2: was noting like her body control where she doesn't foul
• 51:29
Speaker 2: when she's blocking because she understands body control, so she's
• 51:32
Speaker 2: not putting her body on you. She's actually playing the ball.
• 51:35
Speaker 2: So I'm telling you, it's just it's phenomenal. Yeah.
• 51:39
  Speaker 4: See, that's why that's why I don't really care for
• 51:43
Speaker 4: men's basketball, because it's really just everybody shooting past the
• 51:46
Speaker 4: yards and yeah, it's not fun.
• 51:50
  Speaker 2: It's just it's not fun.
• 51:52
Speaker 4: It's not it's not it's not entertaining enough to keep you.
• 51:57
Speaker 5: Maybe the finals. I do watch the final regular season.
• 52:02
Speaker 4: And the thing about the finals though, is, to me,
• 52:05
Speaker 4: you got two great teams playing great all great players.
• 52:09
Speaker 4: But in the game itself, it still doesn't it still
• 52:13
Speaker 4: doesn't reflect the the manner in which we think.
• 52:18
Speaker 2: And again we're all over that's what I'm saying. It's like,
• 52:21
Speaker 2: it just doesn't look like that. It's just a bunch
• 52:23
Speaker 2: of folks throwing up three. And I would definitely give
• 52:25
Speaker 2: my age job because I'm just I'm stuck on that
• 52:27
Speaker 2: because it's just I think, to me, it's like, you know,
• 52:30
Speaker 2: the women's game is American basketball. That's what I look at,
• 52:33
Speaker 2: and I think the NBA is coming euro basketball and
• 52:36
Speaker 2: it's like I said, when you got seven five guys popping.
• 52:40
Speaker 2: You know, ten and fifteen three is a game. It's
• 52:42
Speaker 2: just like, man, get to the post man, Like you
• 52:44
  Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, I couldn't. It's just like I
• 52:46
Speaker 2: want to see Shack. I want to see Patrick Ewing,
• 52:49
Speaker 2: I want to see Dave Rod. I want to see
• 52:50
Speaker 2: Tim Duncan shock hurt.
• 52:52
Speaker 5: Did I hear that somewhere that he's not going to
• 52:54
Speaker 5: start the season or something like that? Okay? Maybe not? Maybe, Okay, Sorry.
• 53:03
  Speaker 5: Thinking about Caitlyn.
• 53:06
Speaker 4: And see being a player who couldn't shoot and was
• 53:10
Speaker 4: always under the basket, I understood my role, you know
• 53:14
Speaker 4: what I'm saying, Like I understood somebody threw many ball.
• 53:17
Speaker 4: My first thoughts should be who am I throwing it to?
• 53:21
Speaker 4: And and and in that, I think there are there
• 53:26
Speaker 4: are a ton of players who fit that description who
• 53:30
Speaker 4: now because of the way the game is, but they're
• 53:33
  Speaker 4: not down there.
• 53:33
Speaker 2: But I think it's just the roles of hoop has
• 53:37
Speaker 2: just changed. It's it's not like I said, and this
• 53:40
Speaker 2: it is what it is, and some people love it.
• 53:43
Speaker 2: It's just if you change it to me.
• 53:45
Speaker 4: If you pass it to me, nobody the other four
• 53:48
Speaker 4: people are not sure they gonna get the ball back.
• 53:50
Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying, because once that passes there,
• 53:54
Speaker 4: I can choot from anywhere. And it's okay.
• 53:56
Speaker 2: Like I said, it's just I ain't even hating on it.
• 53:58
Speaker 2: It just ain't for me. It's just.
• 54:02
Speaker 4: All right, Well, anybody, I think we're gonna run out
• 54:05
Speaker 4: of time, But we're.
• 54:06
Speaker 2: Not talking about the coach hitting the player. Oh yeah, yeah,
• 54:10
Speaker 2: thank you, thank you.
• 54:12
Speaker 5: So when did that happen? That was dropped the ball?
• 54:15
  Speaker 2: Yep?
• 54:16
Speaker 5: So he was upset with him, right, so go ahead.
• 54:19
Speaker 2: Well I don't think, well, hold on, this set it
• 54:23
Speaker 2: up so a player it was. It's not this week,
• 54:25
Speaker 2: but last week for the Falcons. He's running to us down.
• 54:28
Speaker 2: He's actually a beautiful seventy five yard run up the gut,
• 54:31
Speaker 2: and before he gets to the end zone, he drops
• 54:33
Speaker 2: the ball, comes to the sidelines. Coaches, you know, remin
• 54:36
Speaker 2: him out and the coach strikes him in the gut
• 54:39
Speaker 2: about two to three times, and the coach in yeah.
• 54:42
Speaker 5: It was that severe.
• 54:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, he hit him two or three times. And then
• 54:45
Speaker 2: the coach ends up getting fined one hundred thousand dollars.
• 54:47
Speaker 4: So okay, so one hundred thousand dollars, okay, sounds like
• 54:53
  Speaker 4: a lot for a coach.
• 54:54
Speaker 2: For a coach, it sounds like a lot.
• 54:57
Speaker 4: But for every player who saw it, it's never gonna
• 55:03
Speaker 4: get past it. I think, so never gonna get past it.
• 55:08
Speaker 4: You can lose your team for a call that you
• 55:11
Speaker 4: make on the feet, You can lose your you can
• 55:16
Speaker 4: lose the team for a whole lot of other reasons
• 55:20
  Speaker 4: more so.
• 55:23
Speaker 2: Than what he did. Yeah, when you.
• 55:25
Speaker 4: Start, because because you know, the very first thing you're
• 55:29
Speaker 4: gonna say, very first thing I'm gonna say, very first
• 55:31
Speaker 4: thing list is gonna say when we saw it, it's oh,
• 55:35
Speaker 4: he better never put his hand on me.
• 55:37
Speaker 2: But but so so as a former NFL player, like
• 55:41
Speaker 2: when you saw that, kind of.
• 55:43
Speaker 4: Just what went through your mind. That could have never
• 55:46
Speaker 4: happened back in the day. But but okay, that's my
• 55:49
Speaker 4: point though, So you know, but y'all don't think that happened.
• 55:53
Speaker 4: People laid hands on people back in the day. There
• 55:55
Speaker 4: was grabbing, There was grabbing, face mask cussing you out,
• 55:59
Speaker 4: There was all that you ain't pushing me like a kid,
• 56:03
  Speaker 4: Well he.
• 56:05
Speaker 2: You ain't like you.
• 56:08
Speaker 4: Yeah, nobody created like a a a situation that looked
• 56:13
Speaker 4: like you're starting an altercation Okay, I see what you're saying.
• 56:17
Speaker 2: It was like within the football. It was all in
• 56:21
Speaker 2: the football realm, right. You know, you've used to get
• 56:24
  Speaker 2: cussed out.
• 56:25
Speaker 4: You're used to somebody up in your face cussing you out,
• 56:28
Speaker 4: grab you by your shoulder pads.
• 56:30
Speaker 2: That that that's true. That's actually good.
• 56:33
Speaker 4: You're used to that. But you ain't pushing me.
• 56:38
Speaker 2: It wasn't a push. It was a strike.
• 56:39
Speaker 4: Well, well you can't. You can't push me. You can't
• 56:41
Speaker 4: strike me. You can't you can't swing at.
• 56:44
Speaker 5: Me because he dropped the ball right but before he
• 56:49
Speaker 5: got to the goal line, right, And.
• 56:51
  Speaker 4: I understand that's a horrible situation. You know that's a
• 56:55
  Speaker 4: horrible situation.
• 56:56
Speaker 5: Wasn't following the letters and logos saying is if you
• 56:59
  Speaker 5: go that? Yeah?
• 57:02
Speaker 2: But I say when I when I looked at it, though,
• 57:04
Speaker 2: like when I first saw it, I almost didn't see
• 57:07
Speaker 2: a problem with it, because again, in the era football
• 57:10
Speaker 2: that I played in, not that a coach would, you know,
• 57:13
Speaker 2: gut punch you, but you would get hands laid on,
• 57:17
Speaker 2: like whether you're grabbing little formarm, little chest bud. It
• 57:20
Speaker 2: looked but after I thought about it, my mind kind
• 57:25
Speaker 2: of went to if somebody gut punched you, and then
• 57:28
Speaker 2: that player reacts just out of a natural reaction, then
• 57:32
  Speaker 2: we're having a different conversation. So I don't think you
• 57:35
Speaker 2: can do and particularly like NFL, you can't do that
• 57:37
  Speaker 2: with grown men.
• 57:38
Speaker 4: Imagine doing that the Lawrence Taylor Well, yeah, you know
• 57:42
  Speaker 4: what I'm saying. I mean, I mean there are I
• 57:45
Speaker 4: mean just when I think about it, I'm thinking about, like,
• 57:48
Speaker 4: you have to know what player that you're going to
• 57:50
Speaker 4: do that too, because if you if you're walking down
• 57:55
Speaker 4: a sideline, there's some dudes that Keith Millard but in
• 57:59
Speaker 4: my played, you know, defensive Player of the year blah
• 58:03
  Speaker 4: blah blah blah.
• 58:05
Speaker 2: But it's crazy, you're not thinking about putting hands on him.
• 58:09
Speaker 2: So you saying like it was it was it was
• 58:11
Speaker 2: more intentional about who he did that.
• 58:15
Speaker 4: I think I think he thought about I think he
• 58:17
Speaker 4: had to have thought about.
• 58:18
  Speaker 2: It because.
• 58:21
Speaker 4: There's some players on your team. When it's when it
• 58:23
Speaker 4: comes to football, yeah, I can think even a state
• 58:27
Speaker 4: I know exactly exactly, like I ain't going up to
• 58:31
Speaker 4: Charles Smith and slap him across the face with his helmet.
• 58:38
  Speaker 4: You ain't doing that because you're you're creating a situation
• 58:43
  Speaker 4: that is toxic.
• 58:45
Speaker 2: Toxic because other players see it.
• 58:49
Speaker 4: And and the first thing you're going to say, hollis
• 58:51
Speaker 4: when you see me hit somebody else, Oh, he better
• 58:54
  Speaker 4: never hit it.
• 58:55
Speaker 2: But let me ask this. Do you do you think
• 58:58
Speaker 2: the sort of the punishment fit the crime. Do you
• 59:00
Speaker 2: think one hundred thousand dollars five coach was enough? No?
• 59:04
Speaker 5: No, you don't think it was enough.
• 59:06
Speaker 2: No? No, I personally thought he should.
• 59:10
Speaker 5: Yeah, he didn't have a suspension. I should have been
• 59:13
Speaker 5: a company with a suspension for at least one game.
• 59:16
  Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I thought. I'm I'm not even comfortable
• 59:21
Speaker 4: in one game. I mean because I think here, here's
• 59:24
  Speaker 4: the thing.
• 59:25
Speaker 2: I think this is.
• 59:25
Speaker 4: Too far out of Because what if I'm a coach
• 59:29
Speaker 4: on the sideline, I'm making seven eight million dollars, that
• 59:34
Speaker 4: one hundred thousand ain't gonna do nothing to me.
• 59:36
Speaker 2: So I can slap you the next time.
• 59:39
Speaker 5: You'll learn your lesson from that.
• 59:41
Speaker 2: Yeah, because that's scary.
• 59:42
Speaker 4: But if that dude would have reacted hurt out, I
• 59:47
Speaker 4: would see that again. I don't think back in the day,
• 59:51
Speaker 4: I don't know. If you take every starting team across
• 59:55
Speaker 4: the league, offensive defense, especially special teams, okay, and say
• 1:00:02
Speaker 4: you can slap one of those guys that are out there,
• 1:00:04
Speaker 4: one of the eleven, on any one of your starting teams,
• 1:00:08
Speaker 4: that there's not gonna be something.
• 1:00:09
Speaker 2: The old school they y'all old school coaches. There was
• 1:00:12
Speaker 2: some they didn't You told that, Yes, no they didn't.
• 1:00:22
Speaker 5: My legs broke. Get back out there.
• 1:00:25
Speaker 4: But but it ain't coming to them putting hands on
• 1:00:27
Speaker 4: you like that again, grab grabbing your face, masks and
• 1:00:32
  Speaker 4: stuff like that.
• 1:00:33
Speaker 2: All that stuff was all good, cussing you out all that.
• 1:00:36
Speaker 2: What do you think the proper should have been? I
• 1:00:39
Speaker 2: think it should have been. My thing is.
• 1:00:42
Speaker 4: Fire that fire done done. Dang, let somebody else pick
• 1:00:49
Speaker 4: you up, because I'm gonna show him.
• 1:00:52
  Speaker 5: We've pushed mister Lee's button.
• 1:00:53
  Speaker 7: Here.
• 1:00:54
Speaker 4: Let me ask this, what's the most important thing to you?
• 1:00:58
Speaker 2: Your team or your coach. I mean, it's a team.
• 1:01:02
Speaker 4: So if a if a team did, if a player
• 1:01:05
Speaker 4: did something like that.
• 1:01:07
Speaker 2: Let's say if this this a flippan, let's say he
• 1:01:09
Speaker 2: slapped the coach, he'd be gone.
• 1:01:11
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's true, he wouldn't even he.
• 1:01:13
Speaker 2: Wouldn't even got be some some games suspended, absolutely, and
• 1:01:18
Speaker 2: I say multiple games and a game one.
• 1:01:22
Speaker 4: Hundred thousand or no, not just one hundred thousand dollars.
• 1:01:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean because.
• 1:01:28
Speaker 5: If it was a repeated fans, I don't know. I mean,
• 1:01:30
Speaker 5: I think everybody gets caught up in the moment. There's
• 1:01:33
Speaker 5: so much emotion in the game of football. I'm not
• 1:01:35
  Speaker 5: saying that.
• 1:01:37
Speaker 4: What does a coach tell you, coach got you cannot
• 1:01:42
Speaker 4: You cannot let your emotions dictate what you do.
• 1:01:47
  Speaker 2: Man. I just that's I mean, I and I feel
• 1:01:49
Speaker 2: because I ain't really look at it from that perspective
• 1:01:51
Speaker 2: as far as losing the locker room, but I mean,
• 1:01:53
Speaker 2: I don't know. All in our I think it was light.
• 1:01:56
Speaker 2: He should have definitely been gone a game. I would
• 1:01:58
Speaker 2: definitely say that at least leave at least you know,
• 1:02:02
Speaker 2: It's like I just it's just scary to think about
• 1:02:04
Speaker 2: if that player just would have naturally reacted. You know
• 1:02:08
Speaker 2: what I'm saying, You don't know what would have happened. Yeah,
• 1:02:10
  Speaker 2: because I don't.
• 1:02:11
Speaker 4: Again, how would you, like, like, how are you going
• 1:02:15
Speaker 4: to react to that?
• 1:02:16
Speaker 2: It's different because, like I said, again, I told you,
• 1:02:19
  Speaker 2: like when I first seen it, I didn't really I
• 1:02:21
Speaker 2: had a big deal because not that a coach has
• 1:02:23
Speaker 2: ever done that to me, But a coach has gotten physical,
• 1:02:27
Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, because I'm from that last
• 1:02:29
Speaker 2: probably that last era of football where coaches did that. Yeah,
• 1:02:32
Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. So I didn't necessarily like
• 1:02:34
Speaker 2: comprehend it in that way. But now that I sit
• 1:02:36
Speaker 2: back and thought about, like again, to your point, that
• 1:02:39
Speaker 2: wasn't a quote unquote football move. That was a you know,
• 1:02:45
  Speaker 2: it was.
• 1:02:45
Speaker 5: The context of it because you've seen players come off
• 1:02:48
Speaker 5: the field that's that's had a really big, great play
• 1:02:51
Speaker 5: and they kind of the coaches push at their chest,
• 1:02:53
Speaker 5: you know, you like other players do. So it was
• 1:02:55
Speaker 5: the whole context of it. And but by the way,
• 1:02:59
Speaker 5: I wanted to correct what I said earlier when I said, Shack,
• 1:03:02
Speaker 5: we've been talking to old school. You guys looked at
• 1:03:04
Speaker 5: me like I was crazy. It's been a long day,
• 1:03:09
Speaker 5: And I actually meant Lebron James. I apologize to the
• 1:03:13
Speaker 5: audience listening because I had a total brain moment, So
• 1:03:17
  Speaker 5: I don't know I.
• 1:03:20
  Speaker 2: Did.
• 1:03:20
Speaker 5: I just say shot.
• 1:03:23
  Speaker 2: Went well.
• 1:03:27
Speaker 5: I appreciate that, but I always call out my mistakes,
• 1:03:29
Speaker 5: so oh well, we'll have those.
• 1:03:31
Speaker 2: All right. Well, let's get out I'm.
• 1:03:34
