- 0:30OK. I'm really excited.
- 0:31I have Rachel on with us today. She's actually been one of my
- 0:34long time clients. And so let's just start out,
- 0:40introduce yourself, start there. All right, Hi everyone.
- 0:44I'm Rachel. As she just said, I'm, I guess
- 0:47one of her long time clients and I'm so grateful to have been
- 0:53with her since for a couple of years.
- 0:56Oh, my goodness. Yeah, lots of growth in between
- 0:59and and all around. I am a critical care transport
- 1:05nurse as well as a neuro oncology clinical researcher
- 1:11nurse. The next 4 weeks mainly I'm I'm
- 1:17a critical care and critical care transport nurse.
- 1:21And I also would love if you don't mind telling them where
- 1:24you're from, because I feel like it's so interesting 'cause I
- 1:29actually have a lot of clients that are from back East and it's
- 1:32so interesting, like how busy it is both in your EMS system and
- 1:38in your hospital systems there. It's just like, so like to
- 1:42compare it with the West Coast. It's just so different.
- 1:45Oh my gosh, yes. So I am from New Jersey.
- 1:50I am a dual, I guess licensed nurse, New Jersey and New York,
- 1:55so very busy areas. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:03And one thing that I really wanted to talk about with you on
- 2:08this episode is, you know, especially you're joining us
- 2:12inside the new program, the shift, too.
- 2:14But one thing with you is you have made a lot of shifts in
- 2:19your life, career shifts, job shifts, and I feel like you've
- 2:27done them pretty confidently. There wasn't a lot of
- 2:30vacillating. Like even early on when you went
- 2:32to transport, you'd only been an ICU nurse for what, like a year?
- 2:35A year, yeah, I wasn't. I was an ICU nurse for a year,
- 2:39but had I was an EMT. Oh, I still am an EMT for since
- 2:43I was 17, so my gosh. So for many, many years.
- 2:47But yeah, I seen his for a year and ER for I think less than
- 2:53that. So, yeah, yeah.
- 2:56And lots of people that I work with, like we're coaching on how
- 2:59do we just get the confidence to make a shift, to make a change.
- 3:02And with you, it's like you're just not afraid to shift into a
- 3:05different job, a different department.
- 3:08Like we coach on it and we talk about it, but you also step into
- 3:12it very well and very quickly. So I'm curious like for you, how
- 3:17have you like how have you been able to do that?
- 3:24One thing I would like I, I, I definitely have a little bit of
- 3:27an impulsive side. So I, I guess I'm like, Oh yeah,
- 3:31I can definitely do that. Like I'm going to make this
- 3:34transition and just figure it out as I go along type of thing.
- 3:38And I just think that what, what I really am.
- 3:41But after I make those decisions, what I am pretty good
- 3:45at is I'm, I'm pretty good at kind of finding or using my
- 3:50fundamentals and kind of using my fundamentals to my advantage
- 3:54and building off of that and, and really learning as I go
- 3:58along and really building on my core fundamental knowledge on
- 4:03things, especially going into CCT, which was a completely
- 4:10different environment than what I was used to.
- 4:13I would like to say that I'm, I'm, I'm pretty happy that I
- 4:16started my nursing career in a medical ICU where I, I didn't
- 4:20have exposure to like, you know, neuro ICU, you know, medical ICU
- 4:25or I had dabbled in a little bit of like cardiac and stuff like
- 4:29that. So how exposure of like a little
- 4:32bit of different things that I could build my fundamentals on
- 4:35and build up later, but I did not have any any exposure to
- 4:42like peeds or OB. So those were two ginormous
- 4:50hurdles when I was doing starting off CCT for sure.
- 4:54Well, and I'm curious for you because a lot of people when
- 4:59they make those job changes, especially, you know, like you
- 5:03said, like impulsively, they have a lot of fear afterwards.
- 5:09And I do think a lot of the things that we've coached on is
- 5:12like, wait, OK, how do we confidently step into this next
- 5:15role? But not of like fear of like,
- 5:18did I make the wrong decision or not?
- 5:20I, I don't, I, I don't see that with you.
- 5:22So for, and that's common. So like for people who had maybe
- 5:26have that fear, like, what do you think was different for you
- 5:29to not be like, kind of like holding on to the past of like,
- 5:32did I make the wrong decision? And you were, we were just like
- 5:34confidently always coaching on like, OK, well, how do I
- 5:37transition confidently now into this new thing?
- 5:40But I guess what was really helpful was I definitely made
- 5:46like that pros and cons list. I know we talked about that
- 5:49quite often. I know I had a couple of
- 5:51periods, especially when I was transitioning from ICUCCT world
- 5:56to my most recent job of the clinical research job because
- 6:03that was something completely new to me.
- 6:04And I'm like, I don't even know if I'm making the right decision
- 6:06here. So definitely making out that
- 6:10pros and cons list was definitely something very
- 6:14helpful. And at the time, just really
- 6:17kind of delving into what my, I guess, like my boundaries are
- 6:24what my, what, what I, you know, expect out of a workplace, out
- 6:29of a job and kind of really delving into those things where
- 6:34it was really, really, really helpful.
- 6:36And it helped me really make it really helped me make that
- 6:40decision a little bit easier. Yeah.
- 6:43Yeah. This is my why?
- 6:44Yeah, yeah, I remember that. Because we do.
- 6:46We have done that like pros and cons, but also something you're
- 6:49really good at is giving yourself permission to ask those
- 6:53questions of yourself. Like giving yourself permission
- 6:55to like dream big and be like, no, wait, this is what I want,
- 6:59this is what I don't want. And then going into each job
- 7:02interview seeing if it's a match.
- 7:04Which is so funny. This is so relatable right now
- 7:07because I definitely made a big decision for myself.
- 7:12I decided to put it my 4 weeks notice at my current job and I
- 7:19was able to do that confidently, not out of impulse.
- 7:23I can say that for sure. I definitely thought it through
- 7:26and I I definitely looked to what my future self looked like
- 7:32and what she would tolerate and what she doesn't tolerate and
- 7:35how I can mold my future further.
- 7:38And this definitely was the best move for me, even in my personal
- 7:42life as well as in my career. So I guess, yeah, yeah, you can
- 7:47say that I do make these these transitions kind of confidently.
- 7:51Yeah. And something that you just said
- 7:53was another thing I was going to bring up is that we, what we've
- 7:56also really done is talked about like pulling from your future.
- 7:59Like if you gave yourself permission to dream about what
- 8:02you really want, what would that be?
- 8:04And then getting the wisdom from her, like pulling, you know, the
- 8:08wisdom from her as you're making some of these big decisions
- 8:10about transitioning or leaving or starting something new.
- 8:13And I know that's always been helpful with your pros and cons
- 8:16list too. Oh my gosh, honestly, like
- 8:19putting into perspective that that future Rachel has been one
- 8:24of like the biggest game changers.
- 8:25It's like, yeah, what would Rachel, what would future Rachel
- 8:28tolerate? Like, no, no, she wouldn't
- 8:30tolerate XY and Z. No, no, no.
- 8:33This is how we're going to rebuild this.
- 8:34This is how we're going to deal with these issues that arise and
- 8:39how we're going to fix our current situation to build that
- 8:42future. And that has definitely over the
- 8:47years has made me feel a lot more confident in my decisions
- 8:51and how I am in my workplace as well.
- 8:53It's just like, well, no, these are my boundaries and here we
- 8:57are. Or that's it.
- 8:59Yeah, it's super helpful. Looking to future self for sure.
- 9:06One thing that I was thinking about talking about because I
- 9:09think it would be so interesting to talk about.
- 9:12Is. You and I are both recovering
- 9:16hustlers and overworkers. Oh my gosh.
- 9:20And I think like a lot of the people listening to this and
- 9:24that I work with are too. And honestly, like, I don't know
- 9:30how you feel, so it'd be interesting to ask you, but I
- 9:32don't notice this out of you anymore.
- 9:36And maybe it's that you, it's not that you don't overwork, but
- 9:41it's now you recognize it quicker and you pull back
- 9:44quicker. So I'm curious like for you, how
- 9:48are you feeling about your hustling, overworking your
- 9:52relationship with IT and all those things?
- 9:55So, so funny you brought this up because I have, it's like a tug
- 9:59of war within myself with this hustle culture.
- 10:03And the perfect example that I can give right now is studying
- 10:06from for my nurse practitioner boards.
- 10:09I had finished nurse practitioner school after like
- 10:12maybe 5-6 years of working full time, maybe 2 jobs doing 2
- 10:18master's degrees and NP school and clinical Nonstop nonstop
- 10:23nonstop for. Not Maybe you weren't doing all.
- 10:25Those things, I was, yeah, it's not, it's a fact for like 4
- 10:28years, five years. And it was just so tiring and,
- 10:35and now I'm at the point where I'm like, you know what, I
- 10:37finished my schooling in October and I'm like, this is prime time
- 10:44holidays. I'm like, I have a choice of
- 10:47just continuing to hustle for the next like month or couple
- 10:51months or so to study sports and takes, or I can just take a
- 10:57breather, take a break because my brain needs a break and enjoy
- 11:00time with my family and my friends that I really haven't
- 11:03had the chance to do in like 4 or five years, which is really
- 11:06sad actually. And I just chose myself.
- 11:11I chose to take a break. I chose to relax and, and, and
- 11:16just kind of let my mind rest and just be very present in the
- 11:20moment with myself, my family and my friends.
- 11:23And I just learned that there's always going to be a time to
- 11:27hustle. There's always going to be a
- 11:29time to get after what I want, but there's not going to be all
- 11:33the time in the world for family, for friends, for myself.
- 11:38Everything is so, you know, it can be cut short anytime.
- 11:44So that really to find what really matters in life for me, I
- 11:49guess at this point now is just like, I really just want to live
- 11:54in the moment with with what matters most to me.
- 11:58And that's family, friends and traveling and all kinds of fun
- 12:02stuff. So that kind of took a
- 12:07transition for me. But I still battle with it
- 12:09myself. I'm like, no, no, no, this is
- 12:10horrible. Like I really need to like do
- 12:13this now. Now.
- 12:13Now. Yeah, I need to do this for now
- 12:16mindset. It's just like, no, Rachel, you
- 12:18don't have to. It's OK.
- 12:20You're giving yourself a made-up timeline.
- 12:24It's an imaginary timeline. No one is ticking off A to do
- 12:27list for you besides yourself in your own head.
- 12:31There's no reason to make yourself sick all the time.
- 12:35I would get sick all the time. I remember that.
- 12:39I remember that. And that's like something that
- 12:44I've learned over the last year. And it like kind of sounds like
- 12:47it's similar to you is we work in this job where you have to
- 12:51make decisions on urgency. It's like you need to urgently
- 12:55make the decision because this will urgently save their life or
- 12:58whatever it is. And then for me, when I was at
- 13:02home, I would make decisions like that too.
- 13:05And then everything felt urgent, like I got to do this now.
- 13:07I got to make this decision now and now as I'm recovering from
- 13:11hustling and overworking, it's like when there's an urgent
- 13:15decision, then I know that I need to not make it.
- 13:18I know like that's me trying to hustle to like feeling.
- 13:21And the only reason why we do it is because we want to feel a
- 13:23certain way after we make it so we can clear it off our plate.
- 13:26Yeah, that's me. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:28So now I'm like, oh, this is this is this feels urgent.
- 13:33OK, well, I'm going to like pull back and not make the decision
- 13:38out of urgency. And that's when I'm like, OK, I
- 13:40don't need to make this right now.
- 13:41And, and and I tell myself like I'm physically pulling back.
- 13:45Yeah. And and I honestly, I feel the
- 13:47same way too. Like kind of taking a, a break
- 13:50from that hustle culture. It, it helped me take a step
- 13:54back and not make decisions out of impulsivity.
- 13:57Like, yeah, for example, put in my 4 weeks and like I can
- 14:01confidently say that I did not make that decision out of
- 14:05impulse, out of me wanting to just leave a really bad
- 14:08situation. And it just thought something I
- 14:10didn't think through first. I can honestly say I really
- 14:13thought through this and I'm like, this just no longer serves
- 14:17myself in the present self and it also will not serve future
- 14:22Rachel's self. So we're going to make changes
- 14:26on how we're going to do, like we're going to get after future
- 14:29Rachel's self. But it not being so impulsive
- 14:32and taking a step back from that sense of urgency all the time.
- 14:37I actually feel so good in my sensation.
- 14:40I was like, oh, I feel like a mature person.
- 14:43I actually think that's why you don't live in regret after you
- 14:46make big decisions like that. Yeah, I think before, before
- 14:52starting my my journey with you, I would make a lot, a lot more
- 14:56decisions out of impulse. Like, Oh my gosh, I'm so
- 15:00uncomfortable in situation. I don't care.
- 15:01I'm going to do this and think of the consequences later.
- 15:04And I would do that a lot. But after working with you for,
- 15:09for as long as I have been, I no longer feel like that.
- 15:13Like I, I now really take steps into fixing a situation or
- 15:19fixing my mindset and really, you know, thinking things
- 15:23through. And then I'm like, no, I'm going
- 15:25to make my decision. Not out of impulse, not out of
- 15:28wanting to get out of a situation, but I need to just
- 15:32what no longer serves me. Yeah, because if we do that,
- 15:37then we basically give all the power to the situation because
- 15:40we're like, oh, this situation's making me feel like this.
- 15:43If I keep changing situations, then I'm going to feel better.
- 15:45But it's really more power comes from if we can just change the
- 15:50way that we think about the situation, about the
- 15:52circumstances, get to a more neutral spot, then make the
- 15:56decision from there, then we know we're making a powerful
- 15:59decision because then it's based on what we truly want, not just
- 16:04trying to get out of a feeling. Or.
- 16:06Trying to think it's going to make it better.
- 16:08And that was exactly this decision.
- 16:11I'm like, wow, this was the first time that I really in a
- 16:15while that I really felt like I made the right choice.
- 16:19And it was, it's an, it's an amazing feeling, like it's like
- 16:24a weight off my shoulders rather than, OK, I made this, now I
- 16:27have to think of a Plan B and scurry around and now think of
- 16:29something to pick up the pieces with because I made an impulsive
- 16:32decision. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:34And I really think that that is the direct result of also giving
- 16:38your brain space and time to study for this NP exam.
- 16:43That was so necessary. I'm very, I'm very, very happy
- 16:46that I took the time because I, I'm like when I study for these
- 16:51boards, like I'm not just studying to pass an exam.
- 16:55I'm studying to take care of somebody's life.
- 16:59And, and to me like that, that deserves the time full time,
- 17:04full energy and, and just full just comprehension.
- 17:09Like I'm not just trying to pass a test.
- 17:12I'm really studying to try to treat a person and their life.
- 17:17Yeah. And I think that comes from just
- 17:18tapping into like, what do you really need?
- 17:21Like what are the spots and beliefs that you really need to
- 17:23be successful on this and giving yourself that space to do it?
- 17:27Yeah, I I can confidently say I do not regret taking that time
- 17:34to rest, to recover from hustle culture and to just be very to
- 17:40be present in the moment with my family and friends and for
- 17:43myself. And it was just probably the
- 17:46best decision. Yeah, something along this
- 17:50conversation that's like coming up for me too, is this is
- 17:52actually something I was talking to my coach about earlier today,
- 17:57is we create so much safety as doers and overworkers and
- 18:04overachievers in our work, in our profession.
- 18:08We're like this, this feels safe to do this.
- 18:10It feels good. It's like we get a dopamine hit
- 18:13off of like creating that type of work and like not hustling,
- 18:18but like really wanting and desiring our profession and what
- 18:21we do. And then it's almost like
- 18:25anything that we want to do with outside of our work, It's like
- 18:27we don't feel safe. Like we don't feel safe or give
- 18:31ourselves permission to take a full day off and maybe not do
- 18:35anything and maybe sit and watch TV all day or maybe allow
- 18:40ourselves to be bored or explore what our hobbies are.
- 18:43It's like almost like it's safe to be a professional and want
- 18:48all and desire this profession and all these things with it,
- 18:51but it maybe isn't as safe to give myself permission to be
- 18:54bored. Yeah, And for me, being bored
- 18:58was just the hardest. I remember there were the time
- 19:01I, I remember, Oh my gosh, we had a session one time.
- 19:05And I remember telling you I was so proud of myself because I
- 19:08took maybe like 20 minutes to paint my nails.
- 19:12Like instead of studying for an exam, like for the umpteenth
- 19:16time, I'm like, no, I just, I put my material away.
- 19:20I studied it for the past like 2 weeks and I'm like I finally
- 19:22just put it down and painted my nails for 20 minutes before I
- 19:27worked and I and that was like the biggest success of the month
- 19:34for me. Yeah, it's like creating that
- 19:37desire to want something else besides just our work.
- 19:41Yeah, I, I remember with being really stuck in whistle culture,
- 19:46I, I really forgot about things that that made me happy.
- 19:50And I remember having to write down in a journal things that
- 19:55made me happy, like throughout the days or I'm like, Oh yeah, I
- 19:59love, I remember, I love looking at art or I love looking at like
- 20:03certain things or, you know, this certain things that made me
- 20:06happy. And it took me a while to
- 20:08revisit those things again. And it just, it really made me
- 20:13sad. I'm like wow, like I really have
- 20:15to. Revisit myself.
- 20:18I lost myself within the hustle culture and when you really take
- 20:26a step back and and rediscover yourself, it's really profound.
- 20:31Yeah, yeah. And that, and that's kind of
- 20:33like where I am right now, where it's like I can have the desire,
- 20:38I can give myself permission to have the desire for the
- 20:40profession or the work that I'm doing.
- 20:43But now it's also like giving myself permission to desire
- 20:46other things too, Which right now it's like, you know, I've
- 20:50always had a profession or I've always worked full time with my
- 20:53kids. And now it's like shifting a
- 20:55little bit where I want to be spending more time with my kids
- 20:58and kind of, you know, desire that.
- 21:02Whereas I've always told myself, well, I like me working is
- 21:06showing them like an example of like what's possible, which I've
- 21:09loved that. But now, like what I want is
- 21:11kind of shifting and I'm wanting to desire to spend more time
- 21:14with them and it's finding safety in that cause safety for
- 21:18me was always getting to where I wanted to be professionally.
- 21:21Now it's like, OK, I need to find safety and desiring
- 21:24something different too. Yes, that's a big one too.
- 21:28Like now that you mentioned it, it's it's the same thing for me.
- 21:30Like, I guess I found I also found safety and getting the
- 21:34next degree or getting the next career type, you know, career
- 21:38stuff and everything. Like that was my safety for the
- 21:41longest. And now I guess, I guess I'm
- 21:44still trying to find my safety. And now that I've like, am
- 21:49breaking free from postal culture, like I'm still
- 21:52rediscovering myself and everything and getting used to
- 21:56not overworking myself. I still feel guilty.
- 22:01Yeah, yeah, yeah. This, this really feels weird.
- 22:04I should be doing some things, but now I can at least catch
- 22:08myself having those thoughts. I'm like no like it's OK to just
- 22:11sit down and brain rot like what this is.
- 22:13Fine. Yeah.
- 22:15So my question for you is like, how have now being on the other
- 22:19side of it? But you know, I think we're
- 22:21always going to have this tug and this pole because if it's
- 22:23like we are in high integrity of like what we want and it's it's
- 22:33changing that identity is difficult.
- 22:35So we meet resistance with it. But how for you?
- 22:39Like, I know people are listening and they're like, oh,
- 22:40yeah, yeah, that's me. I do that exact same thing when
- 22:44I'm thinking about work or I'm hustling or I'm doing something.
- 22:47But how would you say that you have cultivated getting out of
- 22:54that and cultivated finding what else you desire outside of it?
- 22:58Because I know we've coached on it a lot too.
- 23:00So maybe you could like explain to them maybe coaching concepts
- 23:02or anything that has helped you personally cultivate that?
- 23:07Honestly, a lot of it was was journaling.
- 23:10Like I remember journaling things that that made me happy
- 23:16or that was like, Oh yeah, this really sparked something in me.
- 23:20I remember just, you know, I, I, I was going through like a
- 23:23bookstore or something and I, and I read like a little poem
- 23:27and I was like, Oh yeah, I remember reading that when I was
- 23:29in high school. And I'm like, and that really
- 23:30brought me joy. I was like, wow, that really
- 23:32brought me joy. And it's like little tiny things
- 23:35like that. And I wrote it down in my
- 23:37journal and I'm like reminding myself.
- 23:38I'm like, Oh yeah, this is, these are the things that
- 23:41brought me joy. And then it just kind of
- 23:45snowballed into bigger things, bigger concepts of what brought
- 23:50me joy and kind of brought me back to like who I was.
- 23:54And I'm like to break that identity away from like hustle
- 23:58Rachel or critical care Rachel or CCT Rachel, NP Rachel, Lenny
- 24:03and whatever Rachel. I'm like, I just want to
- 24:05rediscover Rachel and these things in my journal.
- 24:10I'm like, yeah, these are these are also me, you know, And I
- 24:14remember we were going like going over these concepts
- 24:17together. And it's like just really
- 24:20rediscovering myself and what makes me happy.
- 24:24And, and also just sitting with. I guess at the time it was it
- 24:29was, it was feeling curious about being bored.
- 24:35Yeah. And, and doing something that,
- 24:38that brought me joy, I wasn't comfortable with that for the
- 24:41longest time. Like what do you mean just to
- 24:42sit here and do nothing? I can't just sit down and do
- 24:46not, I have an exam or I have a paper.
- 24:49I have, you know, whatever I'm like, I can't just sit and do
- 24:52nothing. And you're like, and we started
- 24:54at small intervals. It was like just take 5 minutes
- 24:58to sit down and and do nothing. Yeah, I remember that.
- 25:02Now as you're saying that, I remember asking you the question
- 25:07because I said I asked you like when we can get past this, no
- 25:14more being in school and you're done with your masters and you
- 25:19finally found that balance of not hustling anymore.
- 25:22What do you think that's going to feel like when you get to her
- 25:25and you're like peace and joy? I remember you saying that.
- 25:28And I remember saying we do not want to wait to get to her now.
- 25:32We want to wait till then. We want to get to her now.
- 25:36So how can you start cultivating peace and joy now and having
- 25:40that throughout the process of becoming her?
- 25:44And we started out with just being curious with boredom.
- 25:47Like if I just allow myself, we set the timer for 5 minutes and
- 25:50we're bored. Like how can we be curious about
- 25:53that? And then how can we just like
- 25:55cultivate peace and joy right now as you're going through the
- 25:58hard. Remember that?
- 26:00I remember actually putting on a timer for 5 minutes.
- 26:02Yeah, talking about that. I did.
- 26:06Oh my gosh. I had like a meditation app too.
- 26:09I still use it, but at the time it was like a 5 minute
- 26:12meditation app. And I would tell you like, yeah,
- 26:14I did my little meditation thing for 5 minutes.
- 26:17Yes. And just kind of like what I,
- 26:20what I, what that felt like for me at the time.
- 26:22And it felt great. It felt good.
- 26:25Yeah, yeah. And that is like the thought air
- 26:27most people have is like, I'm going to wait to feel that once
- 26:29I get there. And it's like, no, like, start
- 26:32cultivating that and feeling that now because it's not going
- 26:35to get better when you get there.
- 26:37That was that was a humongous concept for me, was that, oh, I,
- 26:42I will be happy once I get this degree.
- 26:44I will be calm and peaceful and happy once I get to where I want
- 26:48to be. But you showed me and you know
- 26:51that with this type of mindset and this type of hustle culture,
- 26:55I'm never going to be satisfied. There's always going to be the
- 26:58next thing to get the next thing to get after the next one, the
- 27:01next one, the next 1. So it's like, you know, if you
- 27:05where's, where is the, and where are you going to, where is the
- 27:08happiness and peace and, and everything that you want?
- 27:12If, if it's just an endless cycle.
- 27:15And that was so profound for me because I'm like, you know what?
- 27:19You're right. I'm like, I don't have to wait
- 27:21until I get all these things to be happy.
- 27:24I can be happy now. And here's a whole notebook list
- 27:28full of things that makes me happy and makes me happy now and
- 27:33brings me peace and joy. Why can't I just do that?
- 27:37Yeah, yeah. And I know that some people are
- 27:39thinking right now, well, how is it possible to think about the
- 27:42future and enjoy the present at the same time?
- 27:46And I always say it's because you just allow yourself to, to
- 27:53navigate both and, and enjoy the journey of it, enjoy the
- 28:00becoming while also enjoying where you are and where you're
- 28:03going. It's like enjoying that both.
- 28:06I remember that too. I remember kind of like, I
- 28:10remember we, we were talking about this in one of our
- 28:12sessions too. And it was like that transition
- 28:14for me mentally to instead of being like, I have to like get
- 28:18this, I have to, you know, go through these exams to get by.
- 28:21And if you have to do this, I have to do that.
- 28:22It became a transition of like, no, we can not quite enjoy the
- 28:28process. It's not an enjoyable process,
- 28:30but at least be, you know, open and curious to, you know,
- 28:35transitioning is to like, here is here's my why and here's me
- 28:40like trying to be excited about it and join at least a little
- 28:43bit of this process. And that really helped me too.
- 28:46Instead of like trudging along and like, oh gosh, I have to
- 28:49like get this done to like, hey, I'm getting excited and pumped
- 28:53as to why I'm getting this done. Like I want to, you know, serve
- 28:57my patients and in a totally, you know, different manner and
- 29:01very excited about the knowledge that I'm getting.
- 29:03And I remember kind of like having that transition and
- 29:06getting really excited and seeing like, really that future,
- 29:10Rachel, when I was transitioning into like trudging my feet to
- 29:13like, Oh yeah. Wait, yeah, we can.
- 29:15We can low key kind at the same time.
- 29:19Yeah, yeah. And I always like tell people
- 29:22it's like you look back at the hardest moments and you think,
- 29:27man, that was such a good time. Like I think about when I first
- 29:29got married and we're so poor and we would eat rice and
- 29:33chicken every night and have like 1 meal a day.
- 29:36But I just, I would love to have those times back because things
- 29:40were so fun and it was a challenge.
- 29:43And it's like, I wish I would have enjoyed it more, you know?
- 29:45And I think about that with nursing school too.
- 29:47It was so hard. And I tell nursing students,
- 29:50like, enjoy this time because you're never going to have that
- 29:53back. Yeah, Oh my gosh, you're right.
- 29:55I remember in nursing school, like, having groups, like group
- 29:59study sessions with friends, and it was really fun.
- 30:01We'd have stacks and like, you know, quiz each other.
- 30:05I'm an NP school and I'm like studying by myself and like,
- 30:08man, I kind of wish I had that. But those are fun.
- 30:11Like, no, I'm just like, whatever, but that is done, you
- 30:15know, but. So good.
- 30:19So I. Loved everything that we have
- 30:22talked about today. I think that this is so apparent
- 30:26to people who might be stuck kind of in this repeat cycle of
- 30:30like overworking and hustling. And here's the thing, like if
- 30:33you hustle and work to get there, you're going to keep
- 30:35hustling and working to get to the next thing.
- 30:36And it's never going to be peace and enjoyment.
- 30:39So I love. No definitely finding find your
- 30:43now. Even if it's 5 minutes worth of
- 30:45it. It's 5 minutes.
- 30:47It'll turn to 10/15/30. It'll become your lifestyle.
- 30:52Yeah, yeah. And something else that we did
- 30:54work on too was like just growing the capacity to be the
- 30:56person in that moment to take all those things on because you
- 30:59had to. You.
- 31:01Know and you and because you wanted to and it was like also
- 31:04finding the choice and I chose this like I chose to do this
- 31:08degree and I chose to do this next degree and I'm choosing
- 31:11this hard right now. Like I think when we give
- 31:14ourselves, when we put that back in like this is my choice.
- 31:17It gives us like so much power back too.
- 31:20I remember so many and I still say this.
- 31:21I'm like, Yep, I did this to myself.
- 31:24I chose this, but remembering my why?
- 31:29And I'm like, yeah, let's get excited again.
- 31:30And. Yeah, I love it.
- 31:33Well, I know we talked about a lot of different topics today,
- 31:36but was there anything that you wanted to talk about or bring on
- 31:41today that we didn't already cover or anything that you think
- 31:44might be helpful to anybody listening over anything that
- 31:47we've covered today? That's a that's a solid
- 31:52question. I definitely, I definitely
- 31:56really enjoyed that. We touched on the hustle culture
- 31:59as a recovering hustle culture person well.
- 32:02I mean, I would say if there's someone in it who's thinking
- 32:04about this, because I know there's people listening,
- 32:06they're like, oh, this is me right now, but how?
- 32:09Like, how do I get through it? Like maybe what is one piece of
- 32:12advice you would give them for that?
- 32:14Oh man, you will. You will get through it for
- 32:17sure, 100%. But it it definitely, definitely
- 32:22think about your future self and really envision what your future
- 32:27self looks like and what you want out of your future self.
- 32:32And that would really help you get through the hard times.
- 32:37But and to also start just 5 minutes a day, just finding your
- 32:44joy, like just find yourself, even if it's just 5 minutes,
- 32:50just find who you are. Like, it's so easy to lose
- 32:54yourself, your identity and your job and your position in school
- 33:00and whatever that you're doing. But you know, even if it's just
- 33:055 minutes a day to to just rediscover who you truly are and
- 33:08your own identity. Like that's so important.
- 33:12Yeah. And I think like finding the
- 33:13desire to cultivate that and find it.
- 33:16Yeah, even just to be curious about it too.
- 33:18Like I think curiosity is definitely the first step
- 33:23because I feel like, yeah, really thinking about it is like
- 33:26some for some people is a really big step for me that that was a
- 33:31big step. But it's you always start me off
- 33:35with just being curious with something and that's more,
- 33:40that's more like palatable for me.
- 33:42Like I can do that. Yeah, Like neutrality or
- 33:45curiosity about it. What do you think would say
- 33:48would be the result for you now being kind of on the other side
- 33:51of it? Like I know it's still a push
- 33:52and pull, but like, what do you think is the, what would you be
- 33:56able to tell someone who's like, well, what's available to me on
- 33:58the other side of this? Oh man, you get, you get like
- 34:03number one, I'm not as sick as much anymore.
- 34:06Yeah, at all. Like I, I hardly get ill, which
- 34:10is really nice. My stress levels have definitely
- 34:12come down. My autoimmune issues have also
- 34:18come down. What else?
- 34:22I'm I'm much happier and I have a lot more clarity in my
- 34:25decisions. Like, I'm a lot less of an
- 34:27impulsive person, and I feel like I can step into different
- 34:36decisions a lot more confidently.
- 34:39It was a lot more clarity. And I get to just enjoy my
- 34:44moments. Like, I haven't had that in such
- 34:46a long time. Like, yeah, I can actually go do
- 34:49something fun or spend time with family, spend time with friends
- 34:53and not feel guilty about it. And that's just an incredible
- 34:58feeling to not feel guilty. Yeah.
- 35:02Life is so much more enjoyable when you don't have a rain cloud
- 35:07of guilt behind you all the time.
- 35:09Yeah. And I think like for you, Step 1
- 35:12was just allowing feeling the guilt because that's what the
- 35:14product of like just choosing for yourself and what you
- 35:17desired it. It did come with guilt at first.
- 35:21And then it was like as you allowed that to play out, then
- 35:23it was like so much empowerment to like, OK, it's OK that I felt
- 35:27guilty. Now I'm not starting to feel
- 35:29guilty because it is really what I desire.
- 35:32Yes, and it's also if that's too much of a big stop, it's it's I
- 35:37remember for me it was just allowing guilt to take like the
- 35:40passenger seat of the car and to not drive the car.
- 35:44Like that was a big one for me. Like, you can still live with
- 35:46the guilt, but you don't have to let it drive you.
- 35:51Yeah. So good.
- 35:53Yeah, that was a big one, too. That was a nice, nice small
- 35:57step. But I still use that today so.
- 35:59No, same same. Well, Rachel, thank you for
- 36:03being on and being willing to be on after a long work day and and
- 36:06week so far. I really appreciate having you
- 36:09in this conversation about urgency and hustle culture.
- 36:13Like, I just think it's so relative in what's in healthcare
- 36:17and most of the people who are listening.
- 36:20Absolutely, absolutely. Thank you so much for having me.
- 36:23I really enjoy it. And we're glad you'll be joining
