Latest / Foul Territory / Mets trade Freddy Peralta to Rays: Mets’d Up Instant Reaction
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The New York Mets have finally traded Freddie Peralta. We
- 0:03Speaker 1: got rid of aj mint Or. Freddie Peralta is the
- 0:05Speaker 1: next domino to fall, going to the Tampa Bay Rays
- 0:08Speaker 1: in exchange for three prospects from their system. The Mets
- 0:11Speaker 1: are getting Aiden Smith, a million p tray, and Gary
- 0:15Speaker 1: gil Hill. We're going to talk about all the prospects
- 0:17Speaker 1: coming back to the Mets, as well as briefly what
- 0:19Speaker 1: this trade means before get going into it. Makes sure
- 0:21Speaker 1: you guys are subscribed two met stuff over here on
- 0:24Speaker 1: YouTube for all the Mets content coming at you, and
- 0:26Speaker 1: if you're listening to us Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Drops
- 0:28Speaker 1: the Rain drops a review, download and subscribe. I was
- 0:31Speaker 1: hoping for a top one hundred prospect. We did not
- 0:33Speaker 1: get close to a top one hundred prospect. It feels underwhelming,
- 0:37Speaker 1: but I guess now, with the context of the Trek
- 0:39Speaker 1: Schooble trade and just of what we've got from Freddy
- 0:41Speaker 1: Peralta in general, I think this is actually probably the
- 0:44Speaker 1: right package back.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I think this is a totally fine package. We've talked
- 0:48Speaker 2: about a lot heading into this trade deadline. I talked
- 0:50Speaker 2: about on a lot of my channel recently too. You
- 0:53Speaker 2: don't really get many literal top hundred prospects trade at
- 0:56Speaker 2: the deadline, ever, which you're trying to do is get
- 0:58Speaker 2: guys who can be top hundred prospects next year. Yes,
- 1:00Speaker 2: that's kind of the goal of the trade deadline. I
- 1:02Speaker 2: think the Mets got one and a half prospects who
- 1:05Speaker 2: have a chance to be top hundred prospects within the
- 1:07Speaker 2: next twelve months. I think the big one is Emmanuel
- 1:10Speaker 2: Ptray a double amptre Amelia p. Tray, Emilia a million,
- 1:14Speaker 2: a million.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yeah, French.
- 1:15Speaker 2: He's born in Montreal, which is unbelievable for a baseball prospect.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Two cold weather prospects here, which in Mets couch I
- 1:21Speaker 2: feel like they kind of love right now. But he's
- 1:23Speaker 2: raking in double A right now, advanced approach from the
- 1:25Speaker 2: left side, super elite hit tool, and it seems like
- 1:27Speaker 2: they just probably think they can coax some more pull
- 1:29Speaker 2: side power out of him, and then you have a
- 1:31Speaker 2: left handed hitting second basement with plus plus hit and
- 1:34Speaker 2: hopefully at least average to plus power. Yeah, that's like
- 1:37Speaker 2: a that's a fine profile.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I wish that we had some exafilos on these guys,
- 1:41Speaker 1: just so that we could get a little bit more
- 1:43Speaker 1: of a sense of like what the raw power could
- 1:45Speaker 1: look like. But I think the Mets are doing the
- 1:47Speaker 1: approach that we've talked about before, where they're looking for
- 1:49Speaker 1: guys with one very very good trait and then hoping
- 1:53Speaker 1: that they can build around the rest of it. So,
- 1:55Speaker 1: like you said, with a million p tray, he is
- 1:56Speaker 1: a contact king. He is striking out like under eleven
- 1:59Speaker 1: percent of the time right now in Double A. He's
- 2:02Speaker 1: walking a ton, he gets on base, doesn't chase at all,
- 2:05Speaker 1: doesn't whiff, is super patient at the plate, hits a
- 2:08Speaker 1: ton of ground balls, almost never pulls the ball in
- 2:10Speaker 1: the air. But this is a contact first guy that
- 2:13Speaker 1: I would assume the Mets are hoping they can coax
- 2:15Speaker 1: a little bit more power, like you said, pull side power,
- 2:18Speaker 1: doing stuff in the air a little bit more, and
- 2:19Speaker 1: can play second base.
- 2:20Speaker 4: So that's what it felt like for me with Petre.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Definitely just to give the stats at Double A this year,
- 2:25Speaker 2: again in a twenty three year old, so average age
- 2:27Speaker 2: for the level can't really add much. So it's at
- 2:28Speaker 2: least nice that he's destroying Double A. But thirty seven
- 2:31Speaker 2: games there, it's a three twenty three average, a four
- 2:33Speaker 2: point fifty on base and sorry, I had to get
- 2:36Speaker 2: my discord off. That beating was pissing me off. And
- 2:38Speaker 2: a four to ninety two slug for one to fifty
- 2:40Speaker 2: five WRC plus only three home runs. Like you said,
- 2:42Speaker 2: very little power, but eighteen percent walks and ten percent strikeouts.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Is that's a guy that's very much too advanced for
- 2:47Speaker 2: that level.
- 2:48Speaker 3: It doesn't.
- 2:49Speaker 2: It's not the same athleticism, it's not the same defensive value,
- 2:52Speaker 2: but doesn't strike me that differently. Good, Try and find
- 2:55Speaker 2: watch some videos right now with him swinging the bat
- 2:57Speaker 2: of a profile to aj ewing, where again it's like,
- 2:59Speaker 2: we want to make sure you could have an a
- 3:01Speaker 2: swing where you could hunt for power when you need it.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Because your hit tool and your approach are so good,
- 3:05Speaker 2: we have no concerns with you working deep into accounts
- 3:07Speaker 2: and being in poor leverage spots in individual at bats.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So if we can actually get you to make a
- 3:12Speaker 2: swings with power early accounts when you have the advantage,
- 3:15Speaker 2: you know you're getting something middle in and you can
- 3:17Speaker 2: eventually find fifteen home run power with.
- 3:19Speaker 1: The rest of your tools. Probably a plus player at
- 3:21Speaker 1: some point. Yeah, if you could just flash middling power.
- 3:24Speaker 1: This completely changes the ceiling of a player that a
- 3:27Speaker 1: guy like Ptray could be, which I guess we'll just
- 3:29Speaker 1: wait and see. I love that you're saying the aj
- 3:31Speaker 1: ewing thing because I do think you see a lot
- 3:33Speaker 1: of organizations do this if they've had success with an
- 3:36Speaker 1: archetype of player before, they look for those players again
- 3:39Speaker 1: because they.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Just have the proof that it's worked.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And at least he's a solid second base defender as well. Okay,
- 3:44Speaker 2: we have some exit velocity day they shout out of
- 3:46Speaker 2: TJ stats for this a one hundred three mile per
- 3:48Speaker 2: hour EV ninety and a forty three percent hard hit
- 3:51Speaker 2: rate from p Tray at double A, so that is
- 3:52Speaker 2: a bit below average. There's also not that different from
- 3:55Speaker 2: Jefferson Rojas, as we shouted out as a prospect that
- 3:57Speaker 2: was a fringe top hundred guy that we thought was
- 3:59Speaker 2: like thet case return for Freddie Peralta. But I think
- 4:02Speaker 2: again it's it's a breakout season from a guy who
- 4:05Speaker 2: aged level is not great, but growing up in Montreal
- 4:07Speaker 2: and playing baseball Kentucky, he could baseball.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Per our game.
- 4:10Speaker 2: But this is someone that you probably could expect a
- 4:12Speaker 2: little bit more of a late stage breakout. This isn't sexy,
- 4:14Speaker 2: and again, this isn't a prospect. Everybody knows he's something
- 4:17Speaker 2: that we live and breathed.
- 4:18Speaker 3: This stuff. We learned about HM an hour ago, and.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It's just like, but doing this research in I'm like,
- 4:23Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not at all mad about this return whatsoever.
- 4:26Speaker 1: No, the other two prospects that have heard the names
- 4:28Speaker 1: of Gary gil Hill I think has flashed at times
- 4:31Speaker 1: before the last eighty great name, Yeah, eighty great name,
- 4:33Speaker 1: Absolutely Gary gil Hill. I hope he does well just
- 4:36Speaker 1: simply on the name. I want to Gil Hill Jersey
- 4:37Speaker 1: one day. But he's a name that's flashed on top
- 4:40Speaker 1: one hundreds a couple of years ago. I think he's
- 4:42Speaker 1: kind of taken a little bit of a step back
- 4:44Speaker 1: the previous two seasons in twenty five and twenty twenty six.
- 4:46Speaker 1: You mentioned he's a local kid. The thing with Gary
- 4:49Speaker 1: gil Hill, we talk about traits and having some sort
- 4:51Speaker 1: of it seems like elite trait that we can then
- 4:54Speaker 1: build off of. All he does is throw strikes. He
- 4:56Speaker 1: does not throw balls. He doesn't walk any guys. And
- 4:59Speaker 1: the other interesting to here is that with the lack
- 5:02Speaker 1: of walks, he does get a ton of chase, which
- 5:05Speaker 1: is super interesting for a guy who gets almost no
- 5:08Speaker 1: whips and no swing and miss.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Do you know what he's going to be?
- 5:11Speaker 4: What's he gonna be?
- 5:12Speaker 3: An edge lord?
- 5:13Speaker 4: Edge lord?
- 5:13Speaker 2: He's deep pitch mixed. I think he was throwing six
- 5:17Speaker 2: ish pitches. The Rays have apparently tried to add Velo
- 5:19Speaker 2: because he came up as a as a skinny kid.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Another high school draftee from New rochelle to shout out
- 5:23Speaker 2: in New York for this one. I think he went
- 5:25Speaker 2: to JFJAS, JFK Catholic, JFK Catholic. But he's someone that
- 5:30Speaker 2: again seemingly slots into being a backman end, a mid
- 5:34Speaker 2: to back end rotation starter where if you can find
- 5:36Speaker 2: more swing and miss, which probably has come from velocity
- 5:39Speaker 2: or just slightly manipulating some pitch shapes, but seems like
- 5:41Speaker 2: he has the ability to do that as a guy
- 5:44Speaker 2: wh's been able to pick up more pitches as he's
- 5:45Speaker 2: been a minor leaguer. It's probably just again a fine
- 5:48Speaker 2: back end dude. Like it's let's let's try and do
- 5:51Speaker 2: the thought exercise of comparing these two guys to Jet
- 5:54Speaker 2: Williams and Brandon sprote.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Was he the dude?
- 5:55Speaker 1: By the way, did he pitch for Team Great Britain
- 5:58Speaker 1: and like look nasty like against USA for like two winnings.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Wasn't that a thing that happened? I think it was
- 6:03Speaker 1: that happened. I feel like that Gary. This name is
- 6:06Speaker 1: so funny, Gary gil Hill, Gary gil Hill World Baseball Classic.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Like I feel like he had like a really good
- 6:11Speaker 1: inning and then because of Team Great Britain the left
- 6:13Speaker 1: him in a little.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Bit too long.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah he actually did Okay, we could remembery he could
- 6:17Speaker 2: memory right there.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Wow.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Funny enough Team England, Big England Podcast. But it feels
- 6:22Speaker 2: like it just it really doesn't feel like that bad
- 6:23Speaker 2: of a return to me. I'm not I'm not kind
- 6:25Speaker 2: of kind of happy about this, Like I would.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Have preferred the returns that we were talking about, but
- 6:32Speaker 1: that doesn't seem like it was even remotely on the table.
- 6:34Speaker 1: So it's like, get that out of our brain. Seeing
- 6:36Speaker 1: this trade tells me that it wasn't even slightly close
- 6:39Speaker 1: to that.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I called the Rays.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I was called the Rays. You called the school ol package.
- 6:43Speaker 4: He called the Rays. You're two for two so far?
- 6:45Speaker 3: Do it really good? With the trade deadline?
- 6:46Speaker 2: So far, but also there might have been opportunities for
- 6:48Speaker 2: the metsic get one better prospect and maybe when that
- 6:51Speaker 2: when push came to shove David Stearns just like I
- 6:54Speaker 2: think we actually might need some quantity over maybe the
- 6:56Speaker 2: high end quality when this quality is quality isn't even
- 6:59Speaker 2: that bad. Aiden Smith is just a toolsy outfielder. He
- 7:02Speaker 2: was the other part of the Randy Rose range trade
- 7:05Speaker 2: along with Brodie Hopkins to the Rays.
- 7:07Speaker 3: He run fast, hit hard, swing miss.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Yes, he actually his whiff so far this year I
- 7:12Speaker 1: don't think has been okay. At high A it was
- 7:15Speaker 1: a little bit worse. But he's a super freak athlete.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Same thing, looking for that elite tool again. I think
- 7:20Speaker 1: we now know exactly what the Mets are doing this
- 7:22Speaker 1: trade deadline. You've got one tool, how can we develop
- 7:25Speaker 1: the rest? Aiden Smith is the freak athlete center fielder.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Hope that he eventually becomes Tyrone Taylor.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think that's that's a fine third piece
- 7:33Speaker 2: to look at if you were doing this. I also
- 7:34Speaker 2: think I think they parlt is gonna be good again.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Probably is, I don't.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I mean, I wish the best for him, go be
- 7:39Speaker 2: great with the Rays. Whatever, yeah, go join the playoff
- 7:41Speaker 2: staff where they need some innings right now. They have
- 7:43Speaker 2: to figure out how they're gonna weather the storm without mclinahan,
- 7:45Speaker 2: figure out how they can get Griffin Jackson, eencymore to
- 7:47Speaker 2: the playoff rotation and Rasmus in like this is. This
- 7:50Speaker 2: was a great matchup for these two teams. It felt
- 7:52Speaker 2: like this was a good option.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It felt like there was a pretty robust Freddy Pearl
- 7:55Speaker 1: to market. At least a bunch of teams were interested. Now, ye, now,
- 7:59Speaker 1: considering what we heard about the White Sox return Walkow
- 8:02Speaker 1: and who's the other guy it was in Boston Smith?
- 8:05Speaker 1: Is that Boston Smith? Would you have preferred that? Or
- 8:07Speaker 1: do you prefer this one?
- 8:08Speaker 4: I think I.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Prefer this one, right Yeah? Yeah?
- 8:11Speaker 2: I mean again, I think this guy Petray is like
- 8:13Speaker 2: just big helium, and we have someone moving in the
- 8:16Speaker 2: right direction who looks like they can be major league
- 8:18Speaker 2: caliber at something that might be a position of need
- 8:20Speaker 2: next year.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I do also wonder if, like for the Mets, getting
- 8:24Speaker 1: all these guys who feel like they could eventually just
- 8:26Speaker 1: be major league players, if that's something that they're considering
- 8:29Speaker 1: more as a front office because they know that they're
- 8:32Speaker 1: gonna be able to spend to go fill in like
- 8:34Speaker 1: the big boppers.
- 8:34Speaker 4: I know that didn't work this offseason. We don't need
- 8:36Speaker 4: to talk about that.
- 8:37Speaker 1: But the idea is like, if we need, if we
- 8:39Speaker 1: need big players, we'll go and spend the money on them.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Where we can actually make a lot of that money
- 8:43Speaker 1: back is by getting a bunch of major leaguers who
- 8:45Speaker 1: are gonna be free on the back end of the roster.
- 8:47Speaker 4: And this is what these guys feel like.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yes, and this was the problem with this team going
- 8:51Speaker 2: into this year, where it's like, oh, let's fill up
- 8:52Speaker 2: with the whore h plocos of the world to get
- 8:54Speaker 2: out of that type of contract. We've been begging the Mets
- 8:56Speaker 2: to stop signing. I mean two three year deals are
- 8:58Speaker 2: fined usually always in vacuum. Besides, when it's a player
- 9:01Speaker 2: who hits worse than the.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Pictures when they used to be able to hit the
- 9:04Speaker 3: picture with one arm.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I think I don't know this is it's
- 9:08Speaker 2: just a funny conundrum. I think the world right now
- 9:11Speaker 2: is jumping l Well, Mets, look Hellelo they got for
- 9:13Speaker 2: Freddie Peralta, but in a situation where he was here
- 9:15Speaker 2: as a rental no matter what he made the trade
- 9:17Speaker 2: for him this offseason on one guy in Jet Williams,
- 9:19Speaker 2: who's gone straight down in value since he left your organization,
- 9:23Speaker 2: and Brandon Sprote, who I still think the world's a
- 9:25Speaker 2: bit divisive on.
- 9:26Speaker 3: I still am a fan.
- 9:27Speaker 2: But there's a world in five years from now that
- 9:29Speaker 2: Petray and Garrett Gilhill are more valuable than Sprote and
- 9:34Speaker 2: Jet Williams.
- 9:35Speaker 4: I actually I could talk, I could back myself into it.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I have more faith in Jet, but I know that
- 9:38Speaker 1: he's struggled mightily this year.
- 9:40Speaker 4: It just hasn't looked particularly good. But I do.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I still got the faith in Jet, especially in that org.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I like the idea of gil Hill and Sprote being
- 9:46Speaker 1: similar ish value players at some point in their careers,
- 9:49Speaker 1: even getting to those spots in completely different directions, with
- 9:52Speaker 1: Sproke being like I'm gonna I'm gonna throw bad shape
- 9:54Speaker 1: fastballs right at you, but with nasty breakers and gil
- 9:56Speaker 1: Hill just being an edgelord being an edge lord, similar
- 10:00Speaker 1: edge lord's on this team. We also are expecting to
- 10:03Speaker 1: hear a Wasascar Browser Bond trade seemingly any moment now,
- 10:06Speaker 1: because he was on hug Watch. Given handshakes to everybody
- 10:09Speaker 1: in the bullpen. Seems like he's on his way out.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I'm expecting more and more Mets news to come out,
- 10:14Speaker 1: but you guys will probably not hear from us again
- 10:16Speaker 1: because I can't imagine that there's a big enough player
- 10:18Speaker 1: moved by the New York Mets that needs a video
- 10:21Speaker 1: to drop instantly until Monday morning. If anything else happens
- 10:25Speaker 1: from the time that this video drops Freddy perulta Trade
- 10:28Speaker 1: two tomorrow morning, it'll be covered in tomorrow morning's episode.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we're gonna come back on tonight and give something long.
- 10:34Speaker 2: We're going talk about the Marlin series and then talk
- 10:36Speaker 2: about everything else that happens. Also, there's can be a
- 10:38Speaker 2: lot more than happens on Monday, so probably do something
- 10:40Speaker 2: else Monday night for you guys.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Tuesday morning, Yeah, we're we're gonna.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Figure something out.
- 10:43Speaker 1: There's gonna be a lot of content coming at you guys,
- 10:45Speaker 1: so make sure you are subscribe to mets uff over here.
