- 0:02Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
- 0:06rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, June 27th.
- 0:11Friends who shape your story. There's a phrase that's been
- 0:16said so many times it almost lost its meaning, but it's still
- 0:20completely true. You become like the people you
- 0:22spend the most time with. Your habits, your language, your
- 0:26values, your ambitions, even your faith, all of it is quietly
- 0:30shaped by who you're doing life with.
- 0:32That's not scary. It's just true.
- 0:35And it means that choosing your friends is one of the most
- 0:38important decisions you'll ever make.
- 0:41Proverbs chapter 18, verse 24 cuts right to it.
- 0:45A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a
- 0:49friend who sticks closer than a brother.
- 0:51Having a lot of people around you isn't the same as having
- 0:54real friendship. Popularity is not the same as
- 0:58loyalty. Some of the loneliest people
- 1:00have the most followers. What the human soul actually
- 1:04needs is that rare kind of friend, the one who shows up
- 1:07when things fall apart, who tells you the truth even when
- 1:10it's uncomfortable, who actually sticks.
- 1:13First Samuel chapter 29 gives us an unexpected illustration of
- 1:18this. David found himself in a
- 1:20complicated situation aligned with the Philistines in a way
- 1:25that could have forced him to fight against his own people,
- 1:27Israel. And in First Samuel chapter 29,
- 1:31verses 4 and 5, the Philistine commanders actually intervened
- 1:36and sent David away from the battle.
- 1:38His companions urged him to leave, essentially protecting
- 1:42him from a situation that would have put him in an impossible
- 1:45position. Sometimes the protection of a
- 1:48true friend looks like them steering you away from
- 1:50something, even when it's inconvenient, even when it
- 1:54creates friction, even when you don't fully understand why
- 1:58they're pushing back. That's not betrayal.
- 2:01That's loyalty that looks further down the road than you
- 2:04can see in the moment. The flip side of receiving that
- 2:07kind of friendship is being that kind of friend.
- 2:11Being the person in someone else's life who says the hard
- 2:14thing, who doesn't just go along to get along, who cares enough
- 2:18about your friend's future to risk your present comfort for
- 2:21it. That's rare, and it's worth
- 2:24intentionally cultivating. It means being honest when
- 2:28honesty is needed, even when it's easier to just agree.
- 2:32It means showing up when things are messy, not just when things
- 2:35are fun. It means praying for your
- 2:37friends, not just hanging out with them.
- 2:40And here's the anchor under all of this.
- 2:43The verse doesn't just tell you to find good friends.
- 2:46It points toward the friend who sticks closer than any brother,
- 2:49because ultimately, no human friendship, no matter how good,
- 2:54can fully carry the weight of what our souls need.
- 2:56God's friendship is the foundation.
- 2:59Human friendship is the gift that flows out of it.
- 3:03Build your circle carefully, Be the kind of friend you want to
- 3:06have, and root all of it in the One who never leaves.
- 3:11Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 3:15the gift of friendship and for being the friend who sticks
- 3:18closer than anyone. Help us to choose our close
- 3:20relationships wisely, to recognize the people who
- 3:24genuinely want what's best for us, and to be that kind of
- 3:27friend to others. In return, give us the courage
- 3:30to speak truth in love and the loyalty to show up when things
- 3:34are hard. Root all our friendships in you,
- 3:37in Jesus name, Amen. What if the night was never

- 4:33Now I invite you to spend time with God in today's three-year
- 4:36Bible reading plan. Proverbs chapter 18 verses 23 to
- 4:4124 world English Bible The poor plead for mercy, but the rich
- 4:46answer harshly. A man of many companions may be
- 4:50ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a
- 4:53brother. First Samuel Chapter 29 World
- 4:57English Bible Now the Philistines gathered together
- 5:00all their armies to effect, and the Israelites encamped by the
- 5:04spring which is in Jezreel. The Lords of the Philistines
- 5:08passed on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men
- 5:12passed on in the rear with a chish.
- 5:15Then the Princess of the Philistines said, What about
- 5:18these Hebrews? A chish said to the Princess of
- 5:20the Philistines, Isn't this David the servant of Saul the
- 5:24king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or rather
- 5:28these years? I have found no fault in him
- 5:31since he fell away until today, but the Princess of the
- 5:34Philistines were angry with him, and the Princess of the
- 5:37Philistines said to him, make the man return.
- 5:41That he may go back. To his place where you have
- 5:43appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest
- 5:47in the battle he become an adversary to us.
- 5:51For with what should this fellow reconcile himself to his Lord?
- 5:54Should it not be with the heads of these men?
- 5:57Isn't this David, of whom people sang to one another in dances,
- 6:00saying, Saul has slain his thousands and David his ten
- 6:04thousands? Then a chish called David and
- 6:07said to him, As Yahweh lives, you have been upright, and
- 6:11you're going out, and you're coming in with me.
- 6:13And the army is good in my sight.
- 6:15For I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to
- 6:18me. To this day, nevertheless, the
- 6:21Lords don't favor you. Therefore now return and go in
- 6:24peace, that you not displease the Lords of the Philistines.
- 6:28David said to Achish. But what have I done?
- 6:31What have you found in your servants so long as I have been
- 6:34before you to this day, that I may not go and fight against the
- 6:37enemies of my Lord the King? Achish answered David, I know
- 6:42that you are good in my sight as an Angel of God.
- 6:46Notwithstanding the Princess of the Philistines have said he
- 6:49shall not go up with us to the battle.
- 6:51Therefore now rise up early in the morning with the servants of
- 6:55your Lord who have come with you, and as soon as you are up
- 6:58early in the morning and have light, depart.
- 7:01So David rose up early, he and his men to depart in the morning
- 7:05to return into the land of the Philistines, And the Philistines
- 7:09went up to Jezreel. Thanks for joining us on Bible
