- 1:39Speaker 1: town of Happy Valley, Goose Bay is taking a hard
- 1:41Speaker 1: line approach to the newly announced hydro agreement with Quebec,
- 1:44Speaker 1: saying it won't support hydro development at Gull Island and
- 1:47Speaker 1: expansion at Churchill Falls unless the governments involved provide clear
- 1:51Speaker 1: guarantees that address the infrastructure, social and environmental impacts the
- 1:55Speaker 1: projects will have on the town. Here's vocm's Sarah Strickland.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Mayor Burt Pomeroy says as the regional hub and municipality
- 2:04Speaker 3: closest to the developments, Happy Valley Goose Bay will experience
- 2:08Speaker 3: their combined impacts directly. He says the town must be
- 2:11Speaker 3: recognized as a major stakeholder in the process and large
- 2:15Speaker 3: scale projects cannot succeed if Happy Valley Goose Bay is
- 2:19Speaker 3: left without the resources and capacity needed to support growth,
- 2:23Speaker 3: protect residents and plan for the future. The town has
- 2:27Speaker 3: outlined a number of essential requirements that must be in
- 2:30Speaker 3: place before any development proceeds. They include expansion of the
- 2:35Speaker 3: municipal water supply, long term waste management planning, improvement to
- 2:39Speaker 3: water and sewer services, upgraded emergency response including a new
- 2:44Speaker 3: fire hall, municipal depot, and ambulance facilities, and critical road
- 2:49Speaker 3: and road safety improvements. Pomeroy says pass mega projects in Labrador,
- 2:54Speaker 3: including muskrat Falls, have demonstrated what he calls the consequences
- 2:58Speaker 3: of inadequate planning to address social impacts and increase pressure
- 3:02Speaker 3: on mental health and addiction services, housing, community safety, and crime.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Palmeroy and his counsel acknowledged Premier Tony Wakem's commitment to
- 3:11Speaker 3: work with the town as the projects move forward, and
- 3:13Speaker 3: the mayor says he intends to hold the Premier to
- 3:16Speaker 3: that promise. Sarah Strickland VOCM Local News Now.
- 3:21Speaker 1: The Independent MHA for Bay of Islands, fears that an
- 3:24Speaker 1: increasingly polarized political landscape could create difficulties for the newly
- 3:28Speaker 1: announced Churchill Falls Agreement. Premier Tony Wakem made it clear
- 3:32Speaker 1: in his comments this week that the federal government's role
- 3:34Speaker 1: was essentially in bringing forward a collaborative agreement on the
- 3:37Speaker 1: development at a Joyce told VOCM open Line with Brian Callahan,
- 3:40Speaker 1: his fear is that the opposition Conservatives will use that
- 3:43Speaker 1: approach to foster division.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Once the Prime Minister Canada stepped in and said this
- 3:47Speaker 4: is a national project and put in ten billion dollars,
- 3:51Speaker 4: you're going to start hearing the federal PC greater rhy
- 3:55Speaker 4: start saying well habout Queen Alberta and British Columbia. Then
- 4:00Speaker 4: you're going to get that polarized here a Newfland and
- 4:02Speaker 4: Labrador that Carney's given this away, that he should do
- 4:05Speaker 4: this and and provincially and the stern lawry when not
- 4:09Speaker 4: when I when I heard some statements yesterday by the
- 4:13Speaker 4: opposition you can see it starting made away, which is
- 4:17Speaker 4: not only totally not true, but are so fabricated it's
- 4:22Speaker 4: not even a good story.
