- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Today we come to a very searching portion of Proverbs chapter six.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Solomon brings before us not merely outward sins, but the inner roots of evil that God himself hates pride, lying, violence, wicked imaginations, eagerness for mischief, false witness, and the sowing of discord among brethren.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Then the chapter turns from what God hates to what preserves the soul the Father's commandment, the mother's law, and the light of divine instruction.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: The word of God is not simply information to be admired.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: It is a lamp to guide the steps, a guard to keep the heart, and a voice to speak when temptation draws near.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: This passage especially warns against moral impurity and adultery.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: It exposes sin before it is committed, traces it back to the heart, and shows that sin carries consequences that cannot simply be paid off or explained away.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: As we listen to these verses, may we not merely study wisdom, but bow to it.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Let's read this section of Proverbs six, verses sixteen to nineteen.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: These six things doth the Lord hate, yea, seven are an abomination unto him a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Harry Ironside writes in his Notes on Proverbs about this section of verses sixteen to nineteen.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Jehovah's judgment of the evil speaker is set forth in no uncertain terms.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Seven things are abominable, six he hates in addition to the one already noticed.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: That one is put in as though it were the worst of them all.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: God always detested a proud look.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: The one who has learned at the feet of Christ, who is meek and lowly of heart, does not have haughty eyes.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: In Psalm one hundred and thirty one, the Psalmist gives the words of one who has been disciplined in Christ's school.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty, neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Psalm one hundred and thirty one verse one.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: This is the attitude that is well pleasing to the Lord who says, To this man will I look, even to him that is poor, or lowly, and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word, found quoted from Isaiah sixty six two.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Ironside continues A lying tongue is contrary to God who is truth and who desires truth in the inner man.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: False words indicate a deceitful heart.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: God links a prideful nature and a lying tongue with hands that shed innocent blood.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: The slanderer who uses his tongue to destroy the good name of another is similar to the murderer who uses wicked hands to kill.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: An evil scheming heart is the root of all the evils mentioned.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: All unholy words and doings proceed out of the heart.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: So feet that rush to mischief are mentioned immediately.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: They follow where the heart has already gone.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: The last two are often found together a lying witness and one that stirs up dissension.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: We now come to verses twenty to twenty two.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: When thou goest, it shall lead thee.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: When thou sleepest, it shall keep thee, and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Ironside writes on these three verses, Obedience to parental discipline is obedience to God.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: When godly parents seek to bring up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, Ephesians 6 4, they are laying a solid foundation for eternity.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Their wise instruction becomes practical and precious.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: In any place or any activity, the word of wisdom will be sweet and will keep one from stumbling.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: In this next section of verses 23 to 29 of Proverbs 6 we read For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life, to keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Lust not after her beauty in thine heart, neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread, and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Can a man take fire in his bosom and his clothes not be burned?
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: So he that goeth in to his neighbor's wife, whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Now we focus on the young man here, and Mr Ironside comments.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: The young man's particular snare is referred to again in these verses.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: The purifying influence of the Word of God will protect him from the flattering lips of the strange woman.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: This false stranger would lure him from the path of truth and virtue to falsity and ruin.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: The young man is earnestly warned to beware of her fascinations.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: We are reminded again that the heart must be guarded in order to keep the feet from forbidden paths.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Any tampering with impurity will lead to both spiritual and physical sorrow and poverty.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: The adulteress will endeavor to entrap with her fascinating glances.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: The one whose heart is not protected by the sanctifying truth of God will be overcome.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Sinful thoughts should not be entertained.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: How many upright lives have been damaged by what started as a thoughtless familiarity?
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: The relationship was allowed to develop step by step into adultery, and ended in lifelong sorrow.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: No other sin, except murder, leaves such a dreadful stain.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: In this last section of Proverbs chapter six, with verses thirty to thirty five we read Men do not despise a thief if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry, but if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: He shall give all the substance of his house.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: He that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: A wound and dishonour shall he get, and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: For jealousy is the rage of a man.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: He will not regard any ransom, neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Mr Ironside comments on this last section of verses with The Passage closes by contrasting theft with adultery.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: A thief may be understood if hunger drove him, though he must still restore.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: But adultery is presented as a deeper destruction, a sin against one's own soul, bringing wound, dishonor, and reproach that cannot be simply erased by payment or gifts.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: In clear language God faithfully warns us of the awful consequences of the sin that brought the flood and will bring the fire.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Men may forgive and forget other wrongs.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: This one is never forgotten.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: No one hates a thief stealing to satisfy his hunger.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Both the law of Jehovah and the law of man demand restitution if the thief is arrested.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: But at least it is possible to make amends, even if it takes all he has.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: But the adulterer can never make amends to the wronged husband or the partner of the sin.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Repentance toward God will not erase the reproach.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: The marks of the wound and the dishonor will remain to haunt one through the years.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: The rage of the rightly jealous husband will not be appeased by gifts however great, or apologies however earnest and sincere.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: He who ignores these warnings and deliberately goes on trifling with sin is without excuse.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: The only safe course is to discipline the mind, to bring every sinful thought into subjection, and allow the truth of God to control the heart, as we read in Second Corinthians ten five.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: This is the only way to flee youthful lusts, found in 2 Timothy 222, those fleshly lusts which war against the soul.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: This is how Joseph resisted in circumstances far more tempting than those in which David fell.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: He responded, How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Genesis thirty nine nine.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: May we also be preserved from temptation by allowing God's word to control our lives.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: As we have read this last half of Proverbs six and considered a few thoughts from Harry Ironside, we are reminded that wisdom does not flatter us.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: It searches us, it tells us what God hates, what the heart must guard against, and what the word of God is meant to do in the life of the believer.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: The commandment is a lamp.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: The law is light.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Reproofs of instruction are the way of life.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: That means God's warnings are not given to rob us of joy, but to preserve us from destruction.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Sin always promises secrecy, pleasure, and escape.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: But Proverbs shows us the end of the road before we take the first step.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: May we have hearts that tremble at what the Lord hates, ears that receive his reproof, and feet that walk in the light of his word.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: In the last book of the Bible in Revelation 229, we read a most solemn admonition He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says.
