Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This series includes sensitive and potentially distressing topics, including sexual
- 0:05Speaker 1: assault and abuse involving children. Listener discretion is advised. It's
- 0:26Speaker 1: two weeks after Halloween 1997. Snows blowing sideways and swirls
- 0:32Speaker 1: and stabs, stinging the eyes of the cops and firemen
- 0:36Speaker 1: gathered around Nichols Pond. That's a dark squib of water
- 0:40Speaker 1: in Putnam County, New York, curtained by a stand of woods.
- 0:46Speaker 2: If anyone wanted to commit a murder, up here would
- 0:48Speaker 2: be the greatest place in the world to hide the body.
- 0:52Speaker 2: But no one will find it.
- 0:55Speaker 1: The onlookers stamp their feet for warmth as five men
- 0:58Speaker 1: in dive suits take turns wading in. The pond hasn't
- 1:02Speaker 1: frozen yet, but has the sharpness of slush as divers
- 1:06Speaker 1: slide beneath the surface. Several arm lengths from the cop
- 1:11Speaker 1: stand a mother and father, eyeing the ripples intently. It
- 1:17Speaker 1: was a supernatural vision that launched this search.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I remember seeing a skull in the pond. The skull
- 1:26Speaker 2: was smiling and the skeleton's hands were outstretched, palms facing outward.
- 1:34Speaker 2: It scared me.
- 1:36Speaker 1: That's Penny Osborne. She was sure the skull belonged to
- 1:40Speaker 1: a girl. A girl named Robin Murphy. Robin had gone
- 1:45Speaker 1: missing more than two years prior. Now, long after her
- 1:49Speaker 1: trail's gone cold. The cops and Robin's parents are hanging
- 1:53Speaker 1: their hopes on the divers at the bottom of that pond. Well,
- 1:57Speaker 1: that and Penny's paranormal prowess. I'm very agnostic when it
- 2:13Speaker 1: comes to things like spaceships and God. I look more
- 2:17Speaker 1: for evidence. That's Anthony DePippo, our protagonist from season one.
- 2:24Speaker 1: As a man who taught himself the law in prison,
- 2:26Speaker 1: Anthony's all about facts. But six years ago, when someone
- 2:30Speaker 1: slipped him Robin's case file, he caught a chill on
- 2:33Speaker 1: the back of his neck. I feel like, you know,
- 2:38Speaker 1: like when I get spooked, it's authentic. He was sitting
- 2:43Speaker 1: in the study of his penthouse apartment, which he'd purchased
- 2:46Speaker 1: with a chunk of the $ 12 million payout. for his
- 2:49Speaker 1: wrongful conviction in the murder of 12-year-old Josette Wright. Now,
- 2:54Speaker 1: Anthony's a big man, 6'5, and 300 pounds easy. But
- 3:00Speaker 1: while reading through that scene, he heard a loud bang
- 3:02Speaker 1: behind him and catapulted out of his chair. And the
- 3:07Speaker 1: picture had fell over, and it got a dent in it,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and I got spooked. In his parlor, he saw a
- 3:16Speaker 1: scene from a paranormal flick. His favorite painting had dropped
- 3:20Speaker 1: off the wall and been gashed by a selfie stick.
- 3:24Speaker 1: It was a portrait of Anthony and his hero, Hulk Hogan.
- 3:28Speaker 1: That stick had opened a gouge over the Hulkster's eye.
- 3:32Speaker 1: If ghosts are phantoms with unfinished business, Robin Murphy had
- 3:36Speaker 1: just dropped her card off. I'm bugging out. This is
- 3:42Speaker 1: really kind of scary. And I didn't look at it
- 3:46Speaker 1: anymore that night. I first met Anthony six years ago,
- 3:51Speaker 1: around the time he got hold of Robin's file. My
- 3:55Speaker 1: deep dive feature in Rolling Stone helped to quit his
- 3:57Speaker 1: best friend Andy Krivak, who'd also been falsely convicted of
- 4:01Speaker 1: Josette's murder. Anthony's false conviction for her murder was the
- 4:06Speaker 1: pinch point of his life. But then a second girl
- 4:09Speaker 1: vanished in the span of six months in the sleepy
- 4:13Speaker 1: little town of Carmel, New York. No, Anthony knew that
- 4:17Speaker 1: the job wasn't done. Josette's killer was still out there.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And the man who disappeared Robin as well. In Anthony's mind,
- 4:26Speaker 1: the same man was responsible for both girls. The devil
- 4:31Speaker 1: of Putnam County. And so last year, he asked me
- 4:34Speaker 1: to return with my shovel. He handed me a copy
- 4:38Speaker 1: of Robin's case file. I shared it with my team.
- 4:42Speaker 1: We divvied up its 3,000 pages and promptly went to work.
- 4:47Speaker 1: In the episodes that follow, we'll train her floodlights on
- 4:50Speaker 1: a phantom.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I don't think she realized how dangerous this situation was.
- 4:57Speaker 1: On every move by those Carmel cops.
- 5:00Speaker 2: They didn't really take the whole thing seriously, I don't think.
- 5:04Speaker 1: They actually thought they were going to get a confession
- 5:06Speaker 1: out of him. On every lead they followed.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And that's exactly what made us all think he had
- 5:14Speaker 2: something to do with it.
- 5:16Speaker 1: You want to see a real ghost?
- 5:18Speaker 2: Hell yeah. Why?
- 5:20Speaker 1: Because the devil's in those details. And we'll find him there.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Do you hear my madness? Laughter hides my fears.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Sorrow's depths are endless in this valley of tears. I'm
- 6:08Speaker 1: Paul Solitarov, and this is Season 2 of The Devil's Quarry.
