- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: M Today we're talking about a revolution, a medical
- 0:07revolution, a dietary revolution,
- 0:10and maybe even a pan sized revolution.
- 0:13We're diving deep into the world of GLP1
- 0:16medications. Those little wonder drugs like
- 0:18Ozempic and Zepp found that are flipping the
- 0:21script about how Americans think about food
- 0:24diets and most importantly, what
- 0:27it means to be healthy. Spoiler alert,
- 0:30we're finally talking about nutrition
- 0:33instead of weight loss. And, um, honestly, it's about time.
- 0:36So grab a fork, maybe a protein
- 0:39shake, and let's get started.
- 0:44I am your chief medical explanationist. Making sense of the
- 0:47madness, Dr. Terry Simpson. And this
- 0:50is for Q Pork University, where
- 0:53we make sense of the madness, bust a few myths.
- 0:56We dish out food facts, serve up science, and garnish
- 0:59it with just a generous sprinkle of
- 1:01humor.
- 1:05Let's start with the basics. GLP1
- 1:08medications stand for glucagon,
- 1:11like peptide 1. I know
- 1:14it sounds like something out of your high school biology teacher would mumble before
- 1:17handing the pop quiz that you never read before, but here's the
- 1:20fun part. GLP1 is a hormone your body
- 1:22naturally produces, and it plays a big role in
- 1:25regulating blood sugar and appetite.
- 1:28Pharmaceutical companies, being the little clever alchemists
- 1:31they are, figured out how to make synthetic versions
- 1:34of this hormone. In Biola, GLP Mudden
- 1:37medications were born. Originally, these drugs were designed to help
- 1:40people with type 2 diabetes because it helps them
- 1:43manage their blood sugar. But then the research
- 1:45noticed that the people taking GLP1s were
- 1:48losing weight. And not a little weight, but a lot of
- 1:51weight, like I need a new wardrobe kind of
- 1:54weight. That then began
- 1:57the look at these medications just
- 2:00for weight loss without diabetes. Fast
- 2:03forward to today. And GLP1 drugs like
- 2:05Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro are being prescribed for weight loss
- 2:08in people with obesity. And let me tell you, these
- 2:11medications are changing the game faster than your grandma
- 2:14can bake cookies. You know the
- 2:17story. For decades,
- 2:20diets in America were all about
- 2:23one thing. The number on the scale.
- 2:26Losing weight. Fit into your old jeans or your old
- 2:29wedding dress. Be bikini ready by June. You
- 2:32know the kind of slogan that make you roll your eyes so hard you can see
- 2:35your brain cells quitting their jobs.
- 2:38But GLP1 medications have sparked a
- 2:40shift, and a big one. Instead of
- 2:43focusing solely on weight loss, people
- 2:46are starting to look at food differently. It's not
- 2:49just about shrinking your waistline anymore.
- 2:52It's about nourishing your body and feeling good. Here's
- 2:55why. First, there's appetite
- 2:57regulations. As you know from previously On the
- 3:00podcast GLP1 meds help control hunger and
- 3:03reduce cravings. Suddenly, that pint
- 3:06of ice cream in your freezer isn't talking to you
- 3:09anymore. They do offer better blood sugar
- 3:12control. And when your blood sugar is steady, you're less likely to have
- 3:14those hangry episodes.
- 3:17And with the GLP1s doing that heavy
- 3:20lifting, getting rid of that food
- 3:22noise and making you feel full quicker and
- 3:25longer, people are starting to focus on what
- 3:28they need to eat, not just how much they need to eat.
- 3:31And nutrition is finally stepping into
- 3:34the spotlight. It's like someone just handed
- 3:37America a pair of glasses and we're finally seeing food for what it
- 3:39should be. Fuel for your body, not just a
- 3:42tool for weight management.
- 3:45Let's talk about the diet industry for a minute. You know the
- 3:48trillion dollar machine that gave us juice cleanses,
- 3:51cabbage soup diets? Enough low carb
- 3:54snack bars to build a very tasteless
- 3:56sawdusty fort? Or the Carnivore diet,
- 3:59its latest iteration of the most extreme
- 4:03and potentially deadly diet out
- 4:05there. For years, the diet industry
- 4:08thrived on quick fixes and unsustainable
- 4:11plans. Lose 10 pounds in 10 days.
- 4:14What they didn't tell you was that you'd gain it all back as soon as
- 4:17you smelled your first bit of homemade,
- 4:20delicious bread. But more importantly,
- 4:23GLP1 medications started to throw a, uh, wrench in
- 4:26that model. Why? Because they work.
- 4:29And not in a gimmicky short term way. You don't have
- 4:32to count points. These drugs are helping people
- 4:35lose weight and keep it off. And that's a nightmare for the
- 4:38diet industry, which relies upon
- 4:40repeat customer. More
- 4:43importantly, GLP1s are
- 4:46forcing people and companies to think beyond
- 4:48weight loss. What if instead of cutting out
- 4:51entire food groups, we focused on eating
- 4:54more nutrient dense food? What if we start asking, is this
- 4:57meal nourishing my body instead of how, um, many calories are
- 5:00this? Or my God, I can't have that Reese's peanut butter
- 5:02cup. It's like we finally realized that food
- 5:05isn't the enemy, it's our ally. Unless we're talking about
- 5:08deep fried butter on a stick, that's just
- 5:11a betrayal. Now here's where it
- 5:14gets really cool. At least for a nerd like
- 5:17me. The shift from weight loss to nutrition
- 5:20isn't just a feel good story. It's
- 5:23backed by science. Nutrient
- 5:26dense foods can boost your energy levels,
- 5:29meaning you're not going to have that 3pm slump. Support
- 5:32long term health. Lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes,
- 5:35reducing the risk of cancers, and improving mental
- 5:38clarity, because nothing feels foggy like eating crappy
- 5:40food. And here's the kicker. When you eat better, your body naturally
- 5:43finds a, uh, happier weight. Not only your high school
- 5:46weight, not only your Instagram influencer weight,
- 5:49but your real happy weight, where you feel strong and
- 5:52energized and ready to tackle life.
- 5:55GLP1s are making it easier for people to focus on those
- 5:58benefits by curbing overeating
- 6:00cravings and stopping that
- 6:03constant mental battle about food.
- 6:07Suddenly eating a salad isn't a punishment. It isn't, oh, my God,
- 6:10I have to eat kale again. It becomes a delicious
- 6:12option. So what does this hold for the future
- 6:15of diets in America? And are we finally done with fads and
- 6:18gimmicks? Probably not. There's going to be a
- 6:20huckster that's going to be out there selling you some weird
- 6:23version of their diet no matter what.
- 6:26But GLP1s are paving the
- 6:29way for smarter, healthier eating. So here's
- 6:32what I think we're going to see more of. We're going to
- 6:34see more of, uh, Mediterranean diet coming into your life
- 6:37because it's delicious and healthy. We're going to see
- 6:40more of things like the Dash diet coming into your life because it actually
- 6:43promotes reduction of high blood pressure
- 6:46by as much as a single pill. We're going to
- 6:49see less shame and more empowerment because
- 6:51GLP1s are taking the stigma out of weight
- 6:54loss. Now, there's still plenty of fat
- 6:56shaming out there. There are still plenty of people out
- 6:59there who are going to say this is the easy way.
- 7:03But honestly, it's what we've been
- 7:05waiting for.
- 7:07Before we wrap it up, let me tackle a few
- 7:10frequently asked questions about GLP1s. Number one,
- 7:13GLP1s are cheating. Cheating?
- 7:15Please. Using a tool to improve your
- 7:18health isn't cheating. It's smart. If
- 7:21these medications help you live a, uh, healthier, happier
- 7:23life, why would you suffer?
- 7:26It's a win. You
- 7:29don't have to change your diet on GLP1s. Well,
- 7:32technically, you could eat junk food and still lose some weight.
- 7:35But why would you? GLP1s
- 7:37work best in all of the studies when paired with a balanced, nutritious
- 7:40diet like a Mediterranean or dash style diet?
- 7:44Myth 3 GLP1s are for lazy
- 7:47people. Oh, yeah, the old laziness argument. Listen, folks,
- 7:50managing weight and health is hard. If these medications make
- 7:53it a little easier, stop judging and start
- 7:55supporting. And here's the final
- 7:58thing. There's some people who get on the
- 8:01GLP1 medications and many of
- 8:04them don't have a lot of support or health around them
- 8:07and they actually go on GLP1 medications and do a version of low
- 8:10carb or do some other diet or try and
- 8:13count points on Weight Watchers or get the Mayo Clinic
- 8:16Diet. You don't need to do that. What we want
- 8:19you to do is learn about healthy, nutritious
- 8:22food. And as much as there are people out there saying you have to
- 8:24focus on protein because otherwise you'll lose muscle
- 8:27mass, well, you're going to lose some muscle
- 8:30mass because you don't need as much muscle to carry around
- 8:33100 less pounds or 40 less pounds or even 20 less
- 8:36pounds. And number two, you're going to lose muscle mass
- 8:39because some of the glycogen that you've been excess storing in your
- 8:41muscles you're not going to need anymore. You do need
- 8:44to maintain your protein, but you also need to
- 8:47maintain fiber. All the micronutrients,
- 8:50all the vitamins, all the minerals.
- 8:53If you're like me, every day in your email
- 8:56box you will get letters from
- 8:58Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers,
- 9:01Mayo Clinic Diet. And I probably get those because I always want to
- 9:04see what these diets are that my patients have been on. So I'm
- 9:07seeing a lot of them this time of year. What I'm really happy
- 9:10about is that now we have something that can
- 9:12actually work. Something that allows
- 9:15you to get rid of the feeling of
- 9:18constantly needing food and
- 9:20instead begin to
- 9:23enjoy food and learn about
- 9:26food not for dieting, but food for
- 9:29eating and maintaining your nutrition.
- 9:32So the next time someone asks you what diet you're on, tell
- 9:35them I'm on the take care of my body and enjoy
- 9:38life plan. And if they look confused, send
- 9:41them a copy of this podcast.
- 9:43This is Forku with Dr. Terry Simpson. Thanks for listening.
- 9:46Don't forget to subscribe, Leave a review, share the episode with
- 9:49your favorite foodie friends and until next time, eat well. Be
- 9:52well. Remember, the best diet
- 9:55is the one that keeps you happy, healthy
- 9:58and full of flavor. This podcast
- 10:01was researched and written by me, Dr. Terry Simpson, and while
- 10:04I am a physician, I am not your
- 10:06physician. This is for entertainment and educational
- 10:09purposes only. And if you're thinking about changing your
- 10:12diet, please check with your physician and a
- 10:14registered dietitian who know your health the best so
- 10:17that they can help you garner what would be best for
- 10:20you. Mediterranean and Dash are my two
- 10:23favorites. Number two, please see a
- 10:26board certified physician in Western medicine, not one of
- 10:29these crazy chiropractors or health coaches or
- 10:32bro science buddies. They've never helped you to begin
- 10:35with. If you spend five hours a day in the gym looking at your
- 10:37abs. Well, never mind.
- 10:40Thanks to the people of Simpler Media for distributing the
- 10:43podcast and my really good friend, Evo Terra, the
- 10:46pod God. We look forward to seeing you
- 10:48all. Have a good day, everybody. We'll see you
- 10:51next time on, um. Fork you.
- 10:57Hey, Evil, do you ever think the Dash Diet stood
- 11:00for dashing to the bathroom because of all that fiber?
- 11:03Yeah,
- 11:08I guess you can take the boy out of Ketchikan,
- 11:11but.
