Latest / I Hate Talking / The Etymology of Errors and Erroneous, and the Oktoberfest Experience
Transcript
- 0:29I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 92 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:32I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: Now it is ironic that our word or phrase of the last episode was continuity.
- 0:38I Hate Talking: Yeah, because we have broken our continuity with this episode.
- 0:44I Hate Talking: Yes, you could say we have a continuity error.
- 0:48I Hate Talking: Now the reason for this particular continuity error was not because we forgot what episode we were on.
- 0:56I Hate Talking: Mm, no.
- 0:58I Hate Talking: And we actually recorded in order, episode 92, 93, and 94, but when we went to edit episode 92, it was irrecoverable.
- 1:08I Hate Talking: Yeah, I spent so much time trying to fix it, and the Google and YouTube, nothing was helping.
- 1:18I Hate Talking: So we just chose to move forward with 93 and 94, and now we're back to record 92.
- 1:26I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 1:27I Hate Talking: So are we going to do the same word and topic?
- 1:30I Hate Talking: I thought so.
- 1:32I Hate Talking: OK, well, let's do it.
- 1:34I Hate Talking: I mean, really, we are the only ones that would know.
- 1:36I Hate Talking: Yeah, -- no -- one knows.
- 1:38I Hate Talking: No one knows.
- 1:39I Hate Talking: -- So -- it was our best.
- 1:40I Hate Talking: -- You'll -- just have to take our word for it that we are actually going to talk about what we talked about in our erroneous episode 92 with our continuity error, which our word legitimately was erroneous.
- 1:53I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think there's something there that was meant to be.
- 1:57I Hate Talking: I suppose so, and we had some issues even starting up recording.
- 2:01I Hate Talking: On this day, so this episode, so we'll see if it even saves and the audio is in line with each other.
- 2:12I Hate Talking: -- We'll -- see.
- 2:12I Hate Talking: Or just 92 never gets sent out and it's all erroneous.
- 2:16I Hate Talking: Right.
- 2:17I Hate Talking: And maybe no one will even know the continuity error exists.
- 2:20I Hate Talking: I would not have noticed if I was listening to a podcast.
- 2:24I Hate Talking: -- That's -- true.
- 2:26I Hate Talking: I don't even notice on our own.
- 2:28I Hate Talking: So like we said, our word is erroneous, and I think that's probably believable because we did reference that as a potential word or phrase in episode believe us.
- 2:35I Hate Talking: Yeah, I suppose they would, but I mean, hopefully we're demonstrated that we're honest people, but they have really no way of knowing.
- 2:48I Hate Talking: You're not lying, guys.
- 2:50I Hate Talking: I mean, it's a bit of a thought experiment, right?
- 2:52I Hate Talking: Is that, can you trust somebody to tell you something that they have done when you have zero knowledge of it and now they are referring back to these particular experiences.
- 3:05I Hate Talking: Well, OK, for AI, right?
- 3:07I Hate Talking: I was having a conversation with one of our kids recently.
- 3:10I Hate Talking: I was explaining, there used to be this phrase, a picture is worth 1000 words, but it's not true anymore.
- 3:17I Hate Talking: Because how many times do we see photos?
- 3:21I Hate Talking: And I'm like searching to see like, is it a true photo?
- 3:24I Hate Talking: Was it doctored at all?
- 3:26I Hate Talking: Cause there was a time that if you had a picture, there was proof.
- 3:30I Hate Talking: But now everything gets doctored up no matter how big or little.
- 3:36I Hate Talking: So it's hard to believe the photographer.
- 3:39I Hate Talking: It's hard to believe the creators of podcasts or TV or news or anything.
- 3:45I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 3:46I Hate Talking: Even with videos now they can be AI deep fakes or AI videos.
- 3:51I Hate Talking: Maybe we're not even real.
- 3:53I Hate Talking: Maybe we're just AI voices.
- 3:54I Hate Talking: I don't think I have a good AI voice.
- 3:57I Hate Talking: I have too many, too much inflection.
- 3:59I Hate Talking: Is that the term?
- 4:00I Hate Talking: AI is not that good yet, right?
- 4:03I Hate Talking: That's what they want you to think.
- 4:05I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 4:06I Hate Talking: So erroneous.
- 4:08I Hate Talking: Do you remember discussing it in our Erroneneous episode 92, maybe.
- 4:14I Hate Talking: So we did discuss it and I believe I defined it as basically something that is filled with errors or basically has a lot of mistakes.
- 4:29I Hate Talking: So it is erroneous or maybe even a particular result that is erroneous.
- 4:34I Hate Talking: It is an error and it's more of the adjective of the subject that describes its state as being in error.
- 4:43I Hate Talking: Yeah, and it's more severe, right?
- 4:45I Hate Talking: It's not just like a whoopsie doopsy, kind of messed up.
- 4:48I Hate Talking: It's more severe than that.
- 4:51I Hate Talking: Is that true?
- 4:52I Hate Talking: I think it does carry a certain weight that if somebody says something is erroneous, that it's a little bit more severe.
- 4:59I Hate Talking: Than just saying like this isn't right or that's incorrect.
- 5:03I Hate Talking: That is erroneous.
- 5:05I Hate Talking: Yeah, that just kind of makes you stop more like, oh, it's a serious business.
- 5:10I Hate Talking: So let's check our favorite Oxford language dictionary for the official definition and the etymology.
- 5:17I Hate Talking: I suppose that it's just going to be from the word error.
- 5:20I Hate Talking: All right, let's find out.
- 5:22I Hate Talking: Yes, I do remember this.
- 5:24I Hate Talking: So we got the definition pretty much correct that it is an adjective that simply means wrong or incorrect.
- 5:31I Hate Talking: Now, the interesting thing that I think we discussed last time and I guess we'll discuss again is that this is from Latin from a rare, which means to stray or er and then used in Latin as a rare as arrow.
- 5:48I Hate Talking: Which means vagabond.
- 5:51I Hate Talking: And then became erroneous when combined with the English OUS.
- 5:56I Hate Talking: So erroneous is basically that thing that is wrong or incorrect, but I think the interesting thing is that It has the particular word of vagabond that it sort of flows through when we're talking about errors or erroneous, right?
- 6:15I Hate Talking: So a vagabond, right, is, I mean, not a positive term.
- 6:19I Hate Talking: I don't think anyone wants to be called that, but that's more like you have no place to go, right?
- 6:26I Hate Talking: Or No successful job or.
- 6:30I Hate Talking: Is that correct?
- 6:32I Hate Talking: Right, yes, you are sort of on the move, not necessarily having a particular destination or domicile.
- 6:41I Hate Talking: Yeah, and so it's interesting that that erroneous came from that because they say that's wrong or it's an error.
- 6:50I Hate Talking: To be a vagabond, like to be someone who doesn't have roots and someplace stable to call home.
- 6:56I Hate Talking: Yes, I suppose so.
- 6:59I Hate Talking: So some more information from the English language exchange where there was some discussion on the difference between wrong and erroneous, is that wrong can be more of a broad term for anything incorrect, immoral, or unjust, while erroneous specifically means factually incorrect or mistaken.
- 7:18I Hate Talking: So I think that's probably why I do think of erroneous in terms of more with like data or spreadsheets or calculations that it is an erroneous result.
- 7:29I Hate Talking: And it is still wrong, but it's not necessarily like morally wrong.
- 7:33I Hate Talking: It is just an error.
- 7:35I Hate Talking: OK, I believe that, and yeah, cause I think I don't hear that term very often, but I don't deal with spreadsheets as a career.
- 7:43I Hate Talking: And so maybe you hear it more often.
- 7:47I Hate Talking: Is that a term you'd often use in work?
- 7:50I Hate Talking: Yes, I think so.
- 7:51I Hate Talking: Yeah.
- 7:52I Hate Talking: So I think we had some clever transition from erroneous into our topic, but I don't remember what it is.
- 7:58I Hate Talking: So we're just gonna jump right into our continued review of our unknown number of episodes, miniseries about reviewing various venues and events that we have done in the past year or so.
- 8:12I Hate Talking: And this particular one is Oktoberfest.
- 8:15I Hate Talking: Yes, because you can only be clever once, right?
- 8:18I Hate Talking: You can't think of another.
- 8:19I Hate Talking: I mean, some people can be clever more than once, but that does seem to be a limitation for me personally.
- 8:25I Hate Talking: But Oktoberfest, I think it was one of our favorite vacations we took this year, right?
- 8:32I Hate Talking: Yes, it certainly was a highlight.
- 8:35I Hate Talking: So Oktoberfest was a particular weekend in a local town that we visited, and they have this particular Oktoberfest every year and it is a destination Oktoberfest and everything is done up in German decorations and they have the beer and the local German fare in terms of all the different food.
- 8:59I Hate Talking: So we partook in a number of those things where we enjoyed all the German fare.
- 9:07I Hate Talking: Yeah, I mean, it first started with, I think we've talked about on the pod before about how you've always wanted to go to Germany.
- 9:14I Hate Talking: And it's been a lifelong goal of yours, so we want to make it happen.
- 9:20I Hate Talking: But we always go back and forth.
- 9:22I Hate Talking: Should we bring all the children?
- 9:24I Hate Talking: Should we just go the two of us?
- 9:25I Hate Talking: Going overseas, just the two of us, is a little disconcerting, leaving the kids in a different country across the world, but also it's very expensive to travel with a big family.
- 9:38I Hate Talking: So we kind of were like, let's do this as a practice run.
- 9:41I Hate Talking: Let's all go to Oktoberfest.
- 9:44I Hate Talking: If the kids hate it and don't appreciate the German architecture and music and all that, then they're staying here and we go.
- 9:54I Hate Talking: But if they love it, then maybe we can save up in Sweden that all of us go together.
- 9:59I Hate Talking: So that was the premise of why we went this year, right?
- 10:03I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 10:03I Hate Talking: So a bit of a test run for a full German trip.
- 10:07I Hate Talking: But everybody seemed to enjoy it immensely, so they loved it.
- 10:11I Hate Talking: They liked the decorations and the music and especially the food.
- 10:17I Hate Talking: Oh man, we bought so much food, we could not stop feeding them.
- 10:23I Hate Talking: I mean, as a family, we tend to eat German-esque food.
- 10:29I Hate Talking: I mean, I'm not German.
- 10:31I Hate Talking: I wasn't raised that way, but I have tried to adapt German cooking to an extent.
- 10:37I Hate Talking: So we eat a lot of like sauerkraut and brats and stuff like that, and a lot of pickled things.
- 10:45I Hate Talking: So we are used to it, but this food was next level amazing and all the kids just, we'd bring a plate and they devoured in a minute, so we'd have to go get more.
- 10:56I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 10:57I Hate Talking: So they did have pretzels, which I think we had at the first stop.
- 11:02I Hate Talking: And then the main meal was different bratwurst and wiener schnitzel and sauerkraut, which was, I think the highlight, which it was like homemade real style sauerkraut and the mustard was also very impressive because it wasn't like American mustard.
- 11:22I Hate Talking: It was like true German brand mustard.
- 11:24I Hate Talking: And that was also a very excellent.
- 11:27I Hate Talking: And then I think there was just some rye bread, which some kids liked and some didn't like as much, maybe, but they all devoured all the meat and sauerkraut.
- 11:39I Hate Talking: Yes, that was really fun seeing them really get into the culture, really get into the food.
- 11:46I Hate Talking: There were live bands at this location, and They were having a blast listening to the music and the weather was not good.
- 11:57I Hate Talking: It was pouring rain.
- 12:00I Hate Talking: Like, walk outside and you're drenched.
- 12:03I Hate Talking: It looks like you went swimming.
- 12:04I Hate Talking: And there's this big hall that is in the area.
- 12:10I Hate Talking: It's where everyone goes.
- 12:12I Hate Talking: So what they have live music there and that's where most of the food is, but we went outside because the music was loud.
- 12:19I Hate Talking: And very few people were out there because it was pouring rain.
- 12:23I Hate Talking: There's some umbrellas that we stood under and even in that pouring rain, they had the best time.
- 12:29I Hate Talking: They were dancing to the music, they were playing cornhole, they were having, it was a really, really fun family day.
- 12:37I Hate Talking: That's true, and it wasn't too cold, but it was on the cold side.
- 12:43I Hate Talking: But nonetheless, everybody was outside in the rain and enjoying themselves and like I said, it was a fun family day.
- 12:51I Hate Talking: I think one of the concerns I had was one of our kids had broken their leg and so I was concerned about how wet.
- 13:00I Hate Talking: When did this happen?
- 13:00I Hate Talking: They broke their leg.
- 13:01I Hate Talking: What we had a kid at the Oktoberfest with a broken leg.
- 13:05I Hate Talking: You don't remember this?
- 13:06I Hate Talking: Well, to clarify for our listeners, it was not a broken leg.
- 13:10I Hate Talking: He had a boot on because he had an injury to his heel.
- 13:14I Hate Talking: OK, well, they want to rewind it then?
- 13:16I Hate Talking: No, because I think it's funny because it's not quite as.
- 13:19I Hate Talking: Bombastic as a broken leg, but he was in a boot, so he had fractured his heel plate.
- 13:29I Hate Talking: But yeah, it was a boot, so you could take it on and off, and that's why we kind of went.
- 13:35I Hate Talking: If it was like a hard cast, yeah, we wouldn't be able to because of the amount of rain.
- 13:39I Hate Talking: But even then we didn't know how he'd be able to walk on it.
- 13:43I Hate Talking: And, you know, we still need to keep it dry and Safe, right?
- 13:48I Hate Talking: Or is that not an issue?
- 13:50I Hate Talking: Was that not an issue for you?
- 13:51I Hate Talking: I mean, I certainly was aware of it and that we couldn't do like too much walking or go too fast or, you know, make sure that he had enough brakes to rest his foot and stuff.
- 14:04I Hate Talking: But I was not, I was too worried about it.
- 14:06I Hate Talking: It's not like he was in a cast that would have gotten wet or something like that, right?
- 14:11I Hate Talking: But yeah, so we had a great time.
- 14:15I Hate Talking: And then we did have some German beer and at this particular location, they have mini kegs for sale and you can buy the mini keg and it was really not that expensive for as much that it contains.
- 14:31I Hate Talking: And it was again official export from Germany that was real German beer that I've never actually seen before in the US, so it was definitely something that was very legitimate from Germany.
- 14:48I Hate Talking: And then there were a few people outside, so there was a group of, I don't know how many, 10 or 12 or 13 or 14 people outside in the tent and We were able to all enjoy the keg together.
- 15:05I Hate Talking: Yeah, it worked out really well because kids are allowed there, but it's definitely not necessarily a kid-centric event.
- 15:14I Hate Talking: So when the kids wanted to go outside, I was glad, like, OK, this is a good spot for them to kind of run around and get their energy out, versus just sitting in a chair listening to the music.
- 15:26I Hate Talking: And so I think we did buy the mini keg, because, again, the pricing point was great, but obviously there's no way we could drink all that, two of us responsibly or Enjoyably so we were able to pass it around and share with everyone out there and then I think that made them really happy that we were there and so also made them really happy the kids were there like everyone was able to appreciate the kids and not be annoyed at them running around or playing games because we were sharing and being generous.
- 16:06I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 16:07I Hate Talking: And then you do get to keep the keg as a souvenir, so we did do that as well.
- 16:13I Hate Talking: And after we were finished up at the particular location, we were able to take our little mini keg that was empty with us.
- 16:23I Hate Talking: Yeah, it was really cool.
- 16:24I Hate Talking: It had, you know, like some German photos on it and stuff and It was really cool, when we left, it was interesting because you have to have it empty before you leave.
- 16:35I Hate Talking: You cannot take it with anything in it, per, I don't know what it is, city laws or state laws or whatever.
- 16:42I Hate Talking: And so they have to check it at the door.
- 16:45I Hate Talking: And I was staying behind doing a photo op with some of the kids, and you left with the keg that was empty.
- 16:51I Hate Talking: And uh they checked at the door and he continued walking.
- 16:56I Hate Talking: Well, a security guard or someone tried to get the other guard that talked to you's attention and have him stop you, and they tried to, but you had already left and it was like this, they kind of just like, oh well, kind of thing.
- 17:09I Hate Talking: And I was at first like, oh no, are we're not supposed to take it because we told, we were told we could if it was empty.
- 17:15I Hate Talking: He checked it, it was empty, so I was confused at what was happening.
- 17:20I Hate Talking: Until we realized that they take photos of the people who finish a mini cake, and then they post it on their social media.
- 17:30I Hate Talking: So they were trying to get you.
- 17:33I Hate Talking: To take a photo, and I am glad they did not do that, cause I don't think that's a great thing.
- 17:40I Hate Talking: I mean, you see their social media, there'll be people that just finish one by themselves.
- 17:45I Hate Talking: And I hope they Ubered or whatever, and are safe and good.
- 17:51I Hate Talking: But I don't think you need your photo on the internet, holding a keg up as if you drank all that yourself when we shared it, like you said, with that huge group of people.
- 18:02I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 18:03I Hate Talking: So, nonetheless, we were able to leave the venue and not have our photo taken.
- 18:10I Hate Talking: So it was the best of both worlds.
- 18:12I Hate Talking: Yeah, and then after that we went and got ice cream.
- 18:17I Hate Talking: That was another highlight for me.
- 18:20I Hate Talking: Yep, so we walked around the little town in the pouring rain.
- 18:23I Hate Talking: Still, it was still raining at this point.
- 18:25I Hate Talking: It was raining pretty much the entire time, the whole time, but we did get ice cream and we're able to enjoy that as a family as well as sort of the capstone of our time.
- 18:37I Hate Talking: At Oktoberfest.
- 18:39I Hate Talking: And something that was really uh meaningful for me, while we're getting the ice cream, I was taking your guys' picture, you and the boys, and this couple that are, I don't know, about 10 years older than us.
- 18:53I Hate Talking: Offered to take our whole family photo and they did and then they were like, oh, this is our first time away with our without our kids, they're all grown now, so enjoy this because in 10 years.
- 19:06I Hate Talking: They all will be out of the house also.
- 19:09I Hate Talking: And then I made me flash while we were at the tent outside the hall, there was the only other kid there was this baby that screamed the whole time.
- 19:24I Hate Talking: The poor husband and wife were trying everything to comfort the baby.
- 19:29I Hate Talking: They were taking turns, they're walking around with him.
- 19:32I Hate Talking: I think the grandpa was there at some point.
- 19:34I Hate Talking: He's trying to comfort the child.
- 19:36I Hate Talking: It was, I just felt so bad for them cause they were so stressed, and I kept trying to be so friendly, and like, Let them know it doesn't bother us, as, you know, I've been in the situation before where my kid screams, and it can be so uncomfortable.
- 19:51I Hate Talking: And you feel so much guilt or shame about it.
- 19:54I Hate Talking: So I was trying to be so like, oh, this is great, no problem.
- 19:58I Hate Talking: They're so beautiful, like, we don't mind at all.
- 20:02I Hate Talking: You're doing a great job.
- 20:03I Hate Talking: So it was funny to be like 10 years ago, we were that family with a screaming baby.
- 20:07I Hate Talking: And in 10 years from now, we'll be the couple taking pictures of the families.
- 20:13I Hate Talking: It was like this whole aha moment for me.
- 20:17I Hate Talking: -- And -- then 10 years from now, we'll be the grandpa with the screaming baby.
- 20:20I Hate Talking: That's right.
- 20:22I Hate Talking: Then we'll be the grandpa trying to help our kids comfort their baby.
- 20:26I Hate Talking: That's right.
- 20:27I Hate Talking: Oh man, crazy.
- 20:29I Hate Talking: A bit crazy.
- 20:31I Hate Talking: You like that.
- 20:32I Hate Talking: I see your smile on your face.
- 20:34I Hate Talking: -- You like the thought of being a grandpa -- already, I suppose so.
- 20:36I Hate Talking: I feel like one.
- 20:38I Hate Talking: Getting old That's funny.
- 20:42I Hate Talking: Yeah, I can tell you like that idea.
- 20:44I Hate Talking: So that is our review of Oktoberfest and the word erroneous.
- 20:52I Hate Talking: And if you did like this episode, you can always like, share and subscribe and it is helpful even if you just share it with just one other person that you think may enjoy this particular episode or our podcast in general.
- 21:04I Hate Talking: You made an erroneous error.
- 21:06I Hate Talking: Can an error be erroneous?
- 21:09I Hate Talking: You could say I made an erroneous statement.
- 21:14I Hate Talking: No, you made an erroneous.
- 21:17I Hate Talking: Leap.
- 21:19I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 21:21I Hate Talking: In this series, we've been talking about, would you do it again?
- 21:24I Hate Talking: Would you go back?
- 21:25I Hate Talking: Well, maybe I just wanted to put in a continuity error on purpose.
- 21:30I Hate Talking: You wanted to see if I learned the word erroneous, how I could use it properly, and I failed.
- 21:36I Hate Talking: I failed.
- 21:36I Hate Talking: I made it erroneous.
- 21:38I Hate Talking: I, I, it was erroneous.
- 21:40I Hate Talking: Um, -- you mean how do you use -- it properly?
- 21:44I Hate Talking: It's just an adjective.
- 21:45I Hate Talking: I know, an erroneous error.
- 21:49I Hate Talking: Yeah, but I don't think you need to say erroneous error because error already infers that it's erroneous.
- 21:55I Hate Talking: So bad.
- 21:57I Hate Talking: It's not like you could make a correct error.
- 21:59I Hate Talking: But you can make a worse error.
- 22:02I Hate Talking: There's levels.
- 22:04I Hate Talking: I suppose so, but The word erroneous is not levels.
- 22:09I Hate Talking: It is either true or not true.
- 22:11I Hate Talking: OK, so say the sentence properly using the word erroneous, and then tell me, would you do it Oktoberfest again?
- 22:19I Hate Talking: So if I was to have an erroneous opinion, I would say that I would not do it again.
- 22:27I Hate Talking: Because that would be erroneous.
- 22:29I Hate Talking: So the correct opinion and my true opinion is that I would do an Oktoberfest again and would enjoy the food and music and drink and ice cream.
- 22:40I Hate Talking: And that would be very enjoyable.
- 22:44I Hate Talking: Yeah, I agree.
- 22:46I Hate Talking: I would definitely do it again.
- 22:48I Hate Talking: It makes me want to go to Germany even more.
- 22:52I Hate Talking: And it makes me.
- 22:54I Hate Talking: Wanna take the kids too, cause I didn't think they'd appreciate the architecture or food and culture.
- 23:03I Hate Talking: But they definitely did.
- 23:05I Hate Talking: And so it would be cool to experience it together.
- 23:09I Hate Talking: But yes, I would go to real Germany and I would go back to Oktoberfest.
- 23:14I Hate Talking: Indeed.
- 23:16I Hate Talking: So is this the end of our miniseries or will we have another review next time?
- 23:22I Hate Talking: Oh, I don't know.
- 23:23I Hate Talking: I guess we've done 5, right, even though they've been out of order.
- 23:28I Hate Talking: So we did.
- 23:30I Hate Talking: Chocolate World Oktoberfest, Universal.
- 23:35I Hate Talking: See, I was gonna try to state them in order.
- 23:37I Hate Talking: I'm just thinking now that I'm bad.
- 23:40I Hate Talking: There's one more.
- 23:42I Hate Talking: What's the first one we did.
- 23:43I Hate Talking: We did -- Great Wolf -- Lodge, Universal Studios.
- 23:48I Hate Talking: Then we did Oktoberfest and now we're doing Oktoberfest again.
- 23:52I Hate Talking: Wonder Works and Hershey's Chocolate world.
- 23:55I Hate Talking: That is 5.
- 23:57I Hate Talking: Or 767.
- 24:00I Hate Talking: Because you're saying 6 because we did Oktoberfest twice, but our listeners only get it once.
