Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Pamoja Podcast, the place where stronger
- 0:04lives are built, faith is strengthened, hearts
- 0:07are encouraged, and Christ -centered homes are
- 0:10shaped through ordinary conversations that become
- 0:14extraordinary encounters with God's truth. One
- 0:17conversation, one story, one revelation at a
- 0:23time. I'm your host, Barry Mwamba. In our last
- 0:28conversation, I promised that I would share our
- 0:31story. Not because our story is different from
- 0:34everyone else's, but because I have come to realize
- 0:37that many Christian couples quietly walk through
- 0:41the same seasons while believing they are the
- 0:43only ones experiencing them. For 15 conversations,
- 0:49we have talked about a house in the middle of
- 0:51the forest. We have talked about the foundation,
- 0:55the windows. the warmth, the atmosphere. We have
- 1:00discovered that every house has an atmosphere,
- 1:04and that atmosphere is shaped by whatever is
- 1:07allowed to reign inside it. Today, I want to
- 1:11take you beyond the parable. I want to invite
- 1:14you into our home, not to show you a perfect
- 1:17marriage, but to show you the faithfulness of
- 1:21a perfect God. Because there was a season when
- 1:24Giselle and I discovered That knowing God's design
- 1:28for marriage is not the same as living in it
- 1:31every day. And looking back today, I don't believe
- 1:34our greatest danger was conflict. I don't believe
- 1:37it was disappointment. I don't even believe it
- 1:40was misunderstanding. I believe our greatest
- 1:43danger was something much quieter. Something
- 1:46that almost every Christian experiences, yet
- 1:49very few recognize, while it is happening. Complacency.
- 1:55I have often wondered why the Bible spends so
- 1:58much time warning believers to remain watchful.
- 2:02Jesus said, Watch and pray so that you will not
- 2:05enter into temptation. Peter wrote, Be alert
- 2:09and of sober mind. Your adversary the devil prowls
- 2:12around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to
- 2:16devour. The writer of Hebrews encourages us to
- 2:20encourage one another daily so that none of us
- 2:23may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
- 2:26There is a pattern throughout scripture. God
- 2:29continually calls his people to stay awake spiritually.
- 2:33Why? Because the greatest spiritual dangers rarely
- 2:38announce their arrival. They quietly settle into
- 2:41our routines until they begin to feel normal.
- 2:45As I reflected on our own marriage, I realized
- 2:49that this was exactly what happened to us. We
- 2:53never stopped loving God. We never decided to
- 2:56walk away from Him. We never woke up one morning
- 2:59and said, Christ will no longer be the center
- 3:03of our home. It happened much more quietly than
- 3:07that. Life became busy. Responsibilities multiplied.
- 3:12Children needed our attention. Ministry demanded
- 3:15more. Work required more of us than it had before.
- 3:20None of those things were sinful. In fact, many
- 3:24of them were blessings from God. But blessings
- 3:27can become distractions when they slowly replace
- 3:30the one who gave them. That is the danger of
- 3:34complacency. Complacency does not always look
- 3:37like rebellion. More often, it looks like neglect.
- 3:42It is the slow assumption that because we have
- 3:45walked with God for many years, we no longer
- 3:48need to pursue him with the same hunger we once
- 3:51had. It quietly tells us that yesterday's intimacy
- 3:55will be enough for today, but love has never
- 3:58grown that way. No marriage remains healthy because
- 4:02of yesterday's conversation. No friendship remains
- 4:06strong because of yesterday's time together.
- 4:09Every meaningful relationship is sustained by
- 4:13continual fellowship. Why would our relationship
- 4:17with God be any different? I think about the
- 4:21church in Ephesus. Jesus commended them for their
- 4:25perseverance, their discernment, and their faithfulness.
- 4:30Outwardly, they looked like a healthy church,
- 4:33yet his concern was not with what they were doing.
- 4:37It was with what they had slowly stopped becoming.
- 4:41You have forsaken the love you had at first.
- 4:44There was still serving, still working, still
- 4:48enduring, but something precious had quietly
- 4:51faded. I wonder how many Christian homes look
- 4:55exactly like that, still functioning, still attending
- 4:59church, still raising children, still carrying
- 5:02responsibilities. Yet the warmth that once filled
- 5:06the house has become harder to recognize because
- 5:10complacency slowly replaced pursuit. And perhaps
- 5:14that is one of the enemy's greatest victories.
- 5:18Not convincing us to hate God, simply convincing
- 5:22us that we can safely live without intentionally
- 5:25seeking him every day. That is where our story
- 5:28began and at the time we didn't even realize
- 5:32it. As I look back today, I don't think complacency
- 5:36was the problem. I think it was the door. Once
- 5:39that door was opened, other things quietly found
- 5:43their way into our home. That is the nature of
- 5:46spiritual complacency. It never comes alone.
- 5:49It always brings something with it. The more
- 5:53I reflected on our journey, the more I realized
- 5:56that this pattern is found throughout scripture.
- 6:00Adam and Eve did not lose the garden the day
- 6:03they ate the fruit. Something had already changed
- 6:06before they ever reached for it. They had stopped
- 6:09depending on God's voice and started entertaining
- 6:12another one. The fruit was simply the visible
- 6:16consequence of an invisible drift. That is how
- 6:20the enemy works. He rarely begins with the visible
- 6:23sin. He begins by changing what captures our
- 6:27attention. That is exactly what happened to Samson.
- 6:31His strength did not disappear the day his hair
- 6:34was cut. His downfall began long before that,
- 6:38when he slowly became comfortable with crossing
- 6:41boundaries that God had established for his life.
- 6:44One decision led to another, one compromise prepared
- 6:49the next, until one day he woke up believing
- 6:52he could live exactly as he always had, not realizing
- 6:56that the presence of God had departed from him.
- 7:00That verse has always troubled me. He did not
- 7:04know that the Lord had left him. What a frightening
- 7:07sentence. Not because God is eager to abandon
- 7:11his people. but because it reveals how easily
- 7:15we can become unaware of what is happening inside
- 7:18us while everything still appears normal on the
- 7:22outside. I believe marriages can experience something
- 7:27very similar. A husband and wife can still live
- 7:31under the same roof, still go to church, still
- 7:35raise the children, still smile in public, still
- 7:39celebrate anniversaries, and yet, Without realizing
- 7:43it, they began living beside one another instead
- 7:47of walking together. That was our story. Not
- 7:51because we stopped loving each other, but because
- 7:54we slowly stopped protecting the relationship
- 7:57that made our love grow. The conversations became
- 8:01shorter. The moments together became less intentional.
- 8:06We became very good at managing responsibilities.
- 8:10but we were no longer investing in our relationship
- 8:13with the same intentionality we once had. And
- 8:17perhaps that is one of the greatest deceptions
- 8:20of complacency. It convinces us that because
- 8:24we are still functioning, we must also be flourishing.
- 8:28But those are not the same thing. A marriage
- 8:31can continue functioning while quietly losing
- 8:34its warmth. A Christian can continue serving.
- 8:39while quietly losing intimacy with God. A family
- 8:43can continue living together while quietly drifting
- 8:46apart. Looking back now, I can honestly say that
- 8:51nothing dramatic had happened yet. If someone
- 8:54had asked us how we were doing, we probably would
- 8:57have answered, we're fine. And maybe we even
- 9:02believed it. Because complacency has a way of
- 9:05making slow drift feel normal. Until one day,
- 9:10you realize how far you've drifted from where
- 9:13you once were. There is something I have learned
- 9:17over the years. No couple wakes up one morning
- 9:21and decides to stop loving each other. That is
- 9:24rarely how marriages begin to fall apart. It
- 9:28usually starts with disappointments that are
- 9:31never fully healed. Conversations that are postponed
- 9:35until tomorrow, wounds that are never brought
- 9:38into the light, and a growing distance that nobody
- 9:41notices because life keeps everyone busy. Looking
- 9:46back today, I can honestly say that Giselle and
- 9:49I did not suddenly arrive at that place. We drifted
- 9:53there. One season at a time. One disappointment
- 9:57at a time. One misunderstanding at a time. Until
- 10:02one day we looked at each other and realized
- 10:06that we were no longer enjoying the marriage
- 10:08we had once dreamed of building together. There
- 10:12were moments when we genuinely wondered whether
- 10:15we had reached the end of our journey. The joy
- 10:19that had once come so naturally seemed difficult
- 10:22to find. The conversations that once brought
- 10:26us closer together sometimes left us feeling
- 10:29even farther apart. The house was still standing,
- 10:34but the atmosphere inside the house had changed.
- 10:38There came a point where we began discussing
- 10:41things that we never imagined we would discuss.
- 10:44We talked about separating. We talked to lawyers.
- 10:48We began organizing our finances as though we
- 10:52were preparing to live two different lives. I
- 10:56remember thinking that perhaps this was simply
- 10:58how our story would end. After all, we had tried,
- 11:03we had prayed, we loved God, and yet it seemed
- 11:07as though we had nothing left to give each other.
- 11:11If I am completely honest with you, there were
- 11:14moments when I believed our first love was gone
- 11:17forever. That is difficult to say, but it is
- 11:21the truth. And perhaps someone listening today
- 11:24has whispered those same words in the silence
- 11:28of their own heart. Maybe you have wondered whether
- 11:32what has been lost can ever be found again. Maybe
- 11:36you have convinced yourself that your marriage
- 11:39has reached a point beyond restoration. Maybe
- 11:43you are still living in the same house, but it
- 11:46no longer feels like home. If that is where you
- 11:50are today, I want you to know that I understand
- 11:54those emotions because we have walked through
- 11:57them ourselves. But there is one thing I did
- 12:01not understand at the time. I thought our greatest
- 12:05problem was that we had lost our love for one
- 12:08another. Looking back now, I see it differently.
- 12:13Love was not the first thing we lost. The first
- 12:17thing we lost was our shared pursuit of God's
- 12:21presence. When Christ quietly stopped being the
- 12:25center of our home, Everything else slowly began
- 12:28to move out of its proper place. Our communication
- 12:32suffered. Our patience became thinner. Forgiveness
- 12:36became more difficult. The warmth we once enjoyed
- 12:40became harder to recognize. Everything we have
- 12:44talked about throughout this entire season was
- 12:47no longer just a lesson. It had become our reality
- 12:51and then... When we had almost convinced ourselves
- 12:55that our story was over, God stepped into our
- 13:00house once again. But God, there are two words
- 13:08that appear throughout the Bible that have always
- 13:10filled my heart with hope. But God, those two
- 13:15words have changed the course of countless lives.
- 13:19Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery. but
- 13:22God turned what was meant for evil into good.
- 13:27The children of Israel stood trapped between
- 13:29Pharaoh's army and the Red Sea, but God made
- 13:33a way where there seemed to be no way. Lazarus
- 13:38had been in the tomb for four days, but God was
- 13:41not finished writing his story. The cross appeared
- 13:45to be Satan's greatest victory, but God raised
- 13:49Jesus from the dead. Again and again, when man
- 13:53reaches the end of himself, God begins revealing
- 13:57what he had planned all along. That is exactly
- 14:01what happened to us. When we had exhausted our
- 14:04own strength, God reminded us that our marriage
- 14:08had never been sustained by our strength in the
- 14:11first place. It had always been sustained by
- 14:14his grace. I cannot point to one single conversation.
- 14:19that suddenly changed everything. I cannot point
- 14:22to one counseling session that instantly fixed
- 14:26our marriage. I cannot tell you that we woke
- 14:29up one morning and every wound had disappeared.
- 14:33That is not how God worked in our lives. He began
- 14:37by bringing us back to Himself before He restored
- 14:41our marriage, He restored our hearts, before
- 14:45He healed our relationship with one another.
- 14:48He renewed our relationship with Him, and that
- 14:52changed everything. We began praying together
- 14:55again, not because someone told us we had to,
- 14:59but because we realized we could no longer live
- 15:02without God's presence at the center of our home.
- 15:05We returned to His word, not looking for information,
- 15:09but looking for Him. We repented. Not only are
- 15:15the things we had done wrong toward each other,
- 15:18but of the ways we had slowly allowed other things
- 15:21to take the place that only Christ was meant
- 15:24to occupy. Looking back today, I don't believe
- 15:29God simply repaired our marriage. He rebuilt
- 15:32our foundation. He reminded us that our covenant
- 15:36was never based on feelings. It was never sustained
- 15:39by emotions. It was never secured by our own
- 15:43determination. It was built upon Christ. And
- 15:47when Christ returned to the center of our house,
- 15:50the atmosphere began to change. Peace slowly
- 15:54returned. Grace became easier to extend. Forgiveness
- 15:59no longer felt impossible. Conversations that
- 16:03had once ended in frustration began leading us
- 16:06back toward understanding. The warmth returned,
- 16:09not because our circumstances suddenly became
- 16:12easier. but because the one who gives life to
- 16:15the house was once again occupying his rightful
- 16:19place. That is why I can stand before you today
- 16:23with absolute confidence and tell you this. God
- 16:27is not only able to restore marriages, he is
- 16:30able to restore everything that seemed to disappear
- 16:34inside the marriage. He restores hope. He restores
- 16:38trust. He restores joy. He restores friendship.
- 16:42He restores purpose. And sometimes, he even restores
- 16:48the very love you thought had been lost forever.
- 16:51Because our God has always been in the business
- 16:54of resurrection. He doesn't simply make things
- 16:57better. He makes all things new. When I look
- 17:02back on that season today, I don't see failure
- 17:05the way I once did. I see a loving Father who
- 17:08refused to let us continue building our marriage
- 17:11without Him at the center. At the time, I thought
- 17:15God was simply trying to save our marriage. Now
- 17:17I believe He was doing something much greater.
- 17:20He was teaching us what marriage was always meant
- 17:23to be. Marriage was never intended to be sustained
- 17:27by feelings. Feelings are beautiful. They are
- 17:30gifts from God. But they were never meant to
- 17:33become the foundation of a covenant. There were
- 17:36days when we felt deeply in love with one another.
- 17:39There were other days when those feelings seemed
- 17:42very far away. If our marriage had been built
- 17:45upon emotions alone, it would never have survived.
- 17:50But our covenant rested upon something much stronger
- 17:53than emotions. It rested upon the faithfulness
- 17:56of God. That changed the way we understood love.
- 18:01We stopped asking, how do I feel today? We began
- 18:05asking, how can I honor the covenant God has
- 18:08entrusted to us today? Those are very different
- 18:12questions. One is centered on self. The other
- 18:16is centered on Christ. I also discovered something
- 18:20that I had never fully understood before. God
- 18:24never asked me to change Giselle. He asked me
- 18:28to become more like Christ. That realization
- 18:32transformed the way I looked at our marriage.
- 18:35Instead of waiting for her to make the first
- 18:37step, God began dealing with my own heart. He
- 18:41exposed my pride. He revealed my impatience.
- 18:46He confronted the expectations I had placed upon
- 18:48my wife that only he could fulfill. And I have
- 18:52no doubt that at the same time, God was doing
- 18:55his work in Giselle's heart as well. That is
- 18:59how restoration begins. Not when one person changes
- 19:03the other, but when both people allow God to
- 19:07change them. That is why I no longer believe
- 19:11the greatest miracle in our story was that we
- 19:14stayed married. The greatest miracle was that
- 19:17Christ reclaimed his rightful place in our home.
- 19:21Because when he returned to the center, everything
- 19:24else slowly found its proper place again. The
- 19:28atmosphere changed. The conversations changed.
- 19:32Our home changed. Our future changed. Looking
- 19:37back today, I understand my father's story better
- 19:40than I ever did as a young man. The secret of
- 19:44the house in the middle of the forest was never
- 19:46the walls. It was never the windows. It was never
- 19:50even the fire itself. The secret was always the
- 19:55one the house was built for. A house where Christ
- 19:59is welcomed will never be a house without hope.
- 20:03It may experience storms. It may experience seasons
- 20:06of pain. It may even experience moments when
- 20:10the fire grows weak. But if Christ remains at
- 20:13the center, there is always hope for restoration.
- 20:18That is the testimony we wanted to share with
- 20:21you. Not because our marriage is perfect, but
- 20:24because our savior, As we come to the end of
- 20:31this journey together, I find myself thinking
- 20:34once again about my father. Many years ago, he
- 20:38told me a simple story about a house in the middle
- 20:41of the forest. At the time, I thought he was
- 20:44teaching me about marriage. Today, I realize
- 20:48he was teaching me about life, because every
- 20:52one of us is building a house. Some of you are
- 20:55preparing to get married. Some of you have been
- 20:58married for only a few years. Others have spent
- 21:01decades together. Some of you are walking through
- 21:05one of the happiest seasons of your lives. Others
- 21:09are listening today with tears in your eyes because
- 21:13your house no longer feels like home. Wherever
- 21:17you are on that journey, I want you to remember
- 21:20one thing. Never stop protecting the presence
- 21:23of God in your home. Protect it more than your
- 21:26reputation. Protect it more than your success.
- 21:30Protect it more than your possessions. Protect
- 21:32it more than being right. Because when God's
- 21:36presence remains at the center of your house,
- 21:39He will give you the wisdom to face every disagreement.
- 21:42the humility to ask for forgiveness, the grace
- 21:45to forgive one another, and the strength to remain
- 21:48standing when the storms eventually come. The
- 21:53forest has never been the greatest danger. Storms
- 21:57have never been the greatest danger. Even conflict
- 22:00has never been the greatest danger. The greatest
- 22:03danger is quietly learning to live without intentionally
- 22:07seeking the one who gave life to your home in
- 22:10the first place. Don't allow busyness to replace
- 22:14devotion. Don't allow familiarity to replace
- 22:18gratitude. Don't allow routine to replace worship.
- 22:23Don't allow complacency to convince you that
- 22:26yesterday's relationship with God will be enough
- 22:29for today's challenges. Continue praying together.
- 22:33Continue opening God's Word together. Continue
- 22:37worshiping together. Continue speaking life over
- 22:40one another. Continue protecting the atmosphere
- 22:44inside your home, because your children are growing
- 22:47inside that atmosphere. They are learning what
- 22:50love looks like, what forgiveness looks like,
- 22:53what faith looks like, and what it means to follow
- 22:56Christ, not only by listening to what you say,
- 23:00but by watching how you live. One day, they will
- 23:03build houses of their own. The atmosphere you
- 23:07cultivate today will become part of the foundation
- 23:10they carry into the next generation. That is
- 23:14why your marriage is bigger than the two of you.
- 23:17It is a testimony. It is a ministry. It is a
- 23:20legacy. And before we close this season, I want
- 23:23to leave you with the same lesson my father left
- 23:27with me. Never forget that the house was built
- 23:31in the middle of the forest. The forest never
- 23:34disappeared. The wind never stopped blowing.
- 23:38The cold never stopped surrounding the house.
- 23:41But none of those things determined what happened
- 23:44inside. The atmosphere inside the house was determined
- 23:48by what was protected inside the house. May that
- 23:52always be true of your home. May Christ always
- 23:56remain the center of your marriage. May his presence
- 24:00always be the fire that fills every room. And
- 24:04may your house become a place where your children,
- 24:08your grandchildren, your friends, and everyone
- 24:11who enters can experience the peace, the love,
- 24:16and the faithfulness of God. Because in the end,
- 24:20the greatest testimony of a Christian marriage
- 24:23is not that it never faced the forest. It is
- 24:27that, in the middle of the forest, it never stopped
- 24:31welcoming the presence of God. Before we close
- 24:37this season, I want to thank every one of you
- 24:40who has walked with us through the house in the
- 24:43middle of the forest. What began as a simple
- 24:46story my father shared with me became a journey
- 24:50that reminded us of something we must never forget.
- 24:55A Christian home is not sustained by walls. It
- 24:59is not sustained by emotions. It is not even
- 25:02sustained by good intentions. A Christian home
- 25:06is sustained by the presence of God. That is
- 25:09my prayer for you, that your house will remain
- 25:12warm, that your family will remain united, and
- 25:17that Christ will always be at the center of everything
- 25:20you build. But as we close this season, another
- 25:25question is already on my heart. What happens
- 25:29after the house is built? Because protecting
- 25:32a Christ -centered home is only one part of the
- 25:35journey. The reality is that every day we walk
- 25:39into a world filled with responsibilities, opportunities,
- 25:44promotions, ambitions, deadlines, and pressures
- 25:48that quietly compete for our attention. Very
- 25:52few homes are destroyed overnight. Many are slowly
- 25:56neglected while we are busy trying to build a
- 25:59successful life. That is why, in our next season
- 26:03of Pamoja Podcast, we're going to explore a journey
- 26:07that I believe speaks to every husband, every
- 26:10wife, every parent, every leader, every entrepreneur,
- 26:15every employee, and everyone who has ever struggled
- 26:18to keep life in its proper order when success
- 26:22steals your life. Together, we will discover
- 26:26how success can quietly create isolation. how
- 26:30ambition can slowly replace devotion, how providing
- 26:34for the people we love can sometimes keep us
- 26:37away from them, and why some of the greatest
- 26:40spiritual battles are fought not in moments of
- 26:43failure but in seasons of achievement. We will
- 26:46talk about David before Bathsheba, the appetite
- 26:50created by isolation, work husbands and work
- 26:54wives, providing everything except yourself.
- 26:58when labor becomes an idol, and how to come home
- 27:02again before success costs us what matters most.
- 27:06Because success is a wonderful servant, but it
- 27:09is a terrible master. And if we are not careful,
