Transcript
- 0:00We are now joined by our winner of tonight's race, Raja Kruth
- 0:03Raja History Making Performance. Tonight, in the 20th anniversary
- 0:08of the Drive for Diversity program, Drive for Diversity
- 0:10graduate wins a race, becoming only the third African American
- 0:14driver to win a NASCAR National Series race, joining Hall of
- 0:18Famer Wendell Scott and of course, Bubba Wallace.
- 0:22What's it like to hear that and make history like you did
- 0:25tonight? Yeah, man, it's it's pretty
- 0:29speechless. You know, It's been a tough
- 0:31journey so far and a lot of people have, you know, helped me
- 0:33get to this point and thank you every single one of one of y'all
- 0:36and definitely ups and downs, but this journey has been
- 0:42fruitful at times and and testing at times.
- 0:44But I'm just super grateful for Mr. H because he's the only
- 0:48reason why I got in this thing full time, you know, in this,
- 0:51this winter. It was a lot of uncertainty
- 0:55about where I'd be driving, you know, not having you know, a
- 0:59bunch of funding behind me at the time.
- 1:00And I just stay true to my faith and and my family.
- 1:03And fortunately a lot of people will just put a lot of stuff
- 1:06together for me to be in the spot.
- 1:08So I'm glad I made the most of it tonight and and be locked
- 1:11into the playoffs. What were those final laps like
- 1:13for you? What was going through your head
- 1:15at the time? Honestly Jeff, I was just like
- 1:20thinking what I need to do if like a caution came out, you
- 1:22know just trying to make it live to the end just of with how my
- 1:27balance of my truck was all night but just being prepared
- 1:31for anything, all right. It's easy to get really excited
- 1:33and stuff and get miss your Marks and and just get caught up
- 1:37in the moment. I just try to execute and and
- 1:39fortunately no yellow came out and it worked out for us Bob.
- 1:42Hawker is Fox Sports I2 the 1st as a kid in DC playing or doing
- 1:48this on iRacing, how feasible did you think this moment was?
- 1:53Man, it was a lot of days, especially in high school, that
- 1:55I did not think I could get here.
- 1:56Bob, like, I can't tell you how many times, you know, I was at
- 2:00internship in my junior year working at, you know, the GW's.
- 2:05It's like their basketball court or whatever in the box office
- 2:08and just working on my website when I was just, I racing.
- 2:11And a lot of those days, I didn't think this would be, you
- 2:14know, at all possible. So I just got to thank my dad
- 2:17and my mom, my sister, just because they've no sacrifice a
- 2:22lot to move me to North Carolina to be a product of the NASCAR
- 2:26driver diversity program. That's really cool.
- 2:27That's 20 years. I didn't know that.
- 2:29That's really cool. So shout them, you know Max
- 2:31Siegel and and NASCAR for believing in me from jump just
- 2:37because I think a lot, not a lot of people did.
- 2:39But hopefully they they start now.
- 2:42And this might sound like a weird question, but do you know
- 2:44what happened to your name on the back of the truck?
- 2:46Because it like the R Have you seen it?
- 2:49I haven't. I've not seen.
- 2:50It it looks like it, says Kaputh.
- 2:51It doesn't say Carruth, so you have no idea.
- 2:54Well, that thing was was so good then it just blew the decals
- 2:57off, I guess, Yeah. Chris then Jim and then over
- 3:03here. Chrislikecatchments.com Congrats
- 3:08Without Hendrick Motors or Rick Hendrick and Hendrick
- 3:11hendrickcars.com. Would you race the full schedule
- 3:15or were you just had the sponsorship for those 10 races?
- 3:18It would have been tough. You know, like I said, not
- 3:21having a family that owns the team or or having, you know, not
- 3:25being born into this, right? So I just, I got really lucky
- 3:28and fortunate that we started that relationship last year and
- 3:31that they believe in me enough to to have me represent them not
- 3:35just, you know, here at the racetrack, but at the things
- 3:38that I do, you know, away from from the track.
- 3:40So I'm just super thankful, Chris, and excited for more.
- 3:45Jim. Jim Utter, Motorsport.
- 3:47Dot com. Congratulations obviously.
- 3:51The wind is huge. But you have had like a really
- 3:55spectacular start the first three weeks of this season.
- 3:59Just in general. What?
- 4:01How? How do you?
- 4:02Take in the. Start of this year, man.
- 4:05I don't know. I'm glad it's off week next week
- 4:08get to spend some time with some people, some really good people
- 4:11in my life. But and I don't know, it's it's
- 4:16just a testament to my team. You know everybody aspires been
- 4:19pulling the One Direction and and they've done a great job for
- 4:22giving us 4 fast trucks. But also you know getting the
- 4:26cup stuff where where it used to be in closer to where it needs
- 4:28to be. So everybody's been working
- 4:30hard. Like I said in my TV interview,
- 4:31the decal shops been early busting their tails you know
- 4:35with same with our marketing department our PR folks and
- 4:37obviously you know our parks room guys and everybody at the
- 4:39shop. So I just I'm really grateful to
- 4:44for today and just trying to take in the moment and and like
- 4:47I said hopefully people stop writing me off then.
- 4:50Go here in the middle. Hey Rodger, Erica, UW, Robo
- 5:00Report. Roger, you said you weren't born
- 5:03into this, So what would you tell other kids that maybe come
- 5:06from the similar backgrounds of you that weren't born into the
- 5:08racing industry that one day would like to be in your shoes?
- 5:11Well, I think for me, I guess it's not easy, right?
- 5:16And if you think it's going to just wake up and be on air in
- 5:20front of you, it's not. But you just got to put in the
- 5:23work right and and listen and emphasis on listen because, you
- 5:29know, I think about my first years, you know, racing on on
- 5:32our racing and learning how to be fast on there and then making
- 5:34a lot of mistakes. And honestly it was kind of the
- 5:37same when I started in real life and I just listened to people
- 5:40that wanted to help me and I put in the work the the late nights,
- 5:42the early mornings showing up and I I caught some breaks for
- 5:47sure. But I'd say to those kids
- 5:49because I know it's a lot that are out there that we're in
- 5:52similar spots as me, that y'all can do it.
- 5:54It is just got to put in the work and pay attention and and
- 5:58just do the right thing and it'll work out.
- 6:02Go to Dustin and then we'll go over here.
- 6:05Dustin, let me know. Jason, Congrats.
- 6:06Raja getting a win so early in the season.
- 6:08How does this change your mindset for the rest of the
- 6:10regular season? It doesn't really.
- 6:15I just feel relieved, right? To To be, you know, locked in a
- 6:18playoff spot besides that, man. I mean, it doesn't change
- 6:23anything, right? We we prepare just as hard and
- 6:25do all the little things right, the best way we can each race
- 6:29and adjust accordingly so it it doesn't really change my outlook
- 6:33for the rest of the season. I definitely feel relief because
- 6:36I literally haven't won anything since I was racing late models,
- 6:38so I've been really close and the ARCA stuff I raced over the
- 6:42the last couple years and obviously a couple times last
- 6:44year, so to finally get a win, it's been a long time, but it
- 6:47feels feels special. Was obviously one of your
- 6:50biggest mentors. Have you been able to chat with
- 6:52him yet? Nah, But I mean, we will at some
- 6:56point. It's no biggie.
- 6:58Go over here. Tom Zielinski, Iron County today
- 7:03congratulations Roger. As the penalty as all the chaos
- 7:06was unfolding in the just before you took the lead again, what
- 7:10are you thinking as you're seeing all, as you're hearing
- 7:12all the penalties in from the other drivers on the radio and
- 7:15they were all falling back. Did you have an?
- 7:17Was that your opportunity, that your moment to try and get to
- 7:19the front? What what was the thinking?
- 7:21So was it was those speeding penalties?
- 7:24What was it? The 98 speed, 98 speed.
- 7:28So man, so I I waved off A2 and I saw, he waved.
- 7:33I was like, OK, so he's judging how far he was away from me.
- 7:36Like I could try to sneak up to him to get to the line and we're
- 7:40going three and three and four and I'm at my hots point, I'm
- 7:42like he's still going. So I'm like, OK, I need to just
- 7:45back it down. And I had to give back a lot in
- 7:47my first section or two just to make sure I didn't speed.
- 7:49And I just honestly, I was like, no way.
- 7:54Like, I didn't expect that to happen.
- 7:56But I'm just grateful that the work kind of paid off there.
- 8:00I've I've really put in the effort to be be good at the the
- 8:03Pit Rd. stuff for from learning in my Xfinity races to
- 8:07practicing it on our racing. I'm just glad it all worked out
- 8:11for sure. Go here in the middle and then.
- 8:16Hi, Roger Crystal Clay from racingrefresh.com.
- 8:19Can you just speak a little bit more to what it's like to have
- 8:22the support of your family, especially here while you get
- 8:25your first win and it's such a huge win.
- 8:28Yeah. You know, I'm really glad that
- 8:30the both my parents are here, especially, you know my dad.
- 8:34I know my sister's watching too because they've been, you know,
- 8:37my rock since you know, my dad took me to my first race.
- 8:39Really. Both my parents did with my late
- 8:41granddad and got me that first experience and really enabled me
- 8:46to to put in the work and chase the dreams.
- 8:47Like I said of, you know, living by myself in North Carolina.
- 8:51Like I can't imagine for for a mom and for a dad to send their
- 8:5518 year old kid to a completely different culture, a completely
- 8:58different lifestyle, to live on on his own, work at a race shop
- 9:02and be in a completely different environment.
- 9:04But they just, I'm, I'm glad they're here and they've they've
- 9:08been you know, with me every step of the way.
- 9:11And that's honestly a blessing I've really had is is having my
- 9:13parents, my sister, a lot of you know, really good close friends
- 9:17and and others that have helped elevate me and help me during
- 9:20the tough times and help me celebrate for the good ones go.
- 9:24Here Brian Twining, Betts Roots Media Group.
- 9:29First of all, congratulations. I just want to let you know
- 9:32within the betting community, you've had a lot of supporters
- 9:35these first couple of. Weeks.
- 9:36Yeah. So it's funny you say that
- 9:38because like so many people will be like, hey bro, I bet on you
- 9:41tonight, so you better give me some.
- 9:42And I'm like, OK, hopefully you didn't put a house on me, but
- 9:45we'll see. Let me just tell you, there are
- 9:47lots of people celebrating tonight, so I just wanted to ask
- 9:50you, do you have any special plans to celebrate this
- 9:53monumental victory? Well I had a bet with my my tire
- 9:59specialist Peter that I was shotgun a beer in Victory Lane
- 10:01but nobody got me a beer which I'm not complaining.
- 10:04I I don't really drink anyway. But I don't know hang out with
- 10:09my peeps tomorrow. I'm going home bro.
- 10:13I'm flying back. Yeah, I'm, I'm a homebody.
- 10:17I stay inside, so but I definitely just, I know I may
- 10:22seem docile, but I'm just trying to take in everything just
- 10:24because like I said, when the last time I won, you know, I won
- 10:27like you know, two or three races in a row and I thought it
- 10:30was going to be easy and then I was struggling for a lot of
- 10:34times and had it close and slipped through my fingers a
- 10:36couple times. So I'm just trying to take it
- 10:38in. Go back up here, Jeff, and then
- 10:42in the back and then Bob. I want to follow up on that
- 10:46because it you joked during qualifying, they they said like,
- 10:51oh looks like you maybe you have some dust in your eye or
- 10:53something after you got the pole.
- 10:55That was that was solely the truth.
- 10:57That was, yeah. That was the truth.
- 10:58That was not lying, OK? Because.
- 11:00I was like, wait, how come you got emotional for the pole or
- 11:02something, but not? You know, exactly.
- 11:04That's what I'm saying, bro. Like, I mean, that would be kind
- 11:08of weird, I think, like this whole race, you know?
- 11:11But I don't know. Yeah, I was.
- 11:14It was dust. I was not.
- 11:16I was not lying. Go to Bob and then we'll go in
- 11:20the back. Packers Fox Sports have a couple
- 11:22more. Do you still go to Winston Salem
- 11:24State? Yeah, So I'm a senior.
- 11:27Hopefully. I don't have any homework doing
- 11:28tonight, but yeah, I'm a I'm a graduate in the fall, so it'll
- 11:32be nice to walk across the stage.
- 11:33It'll be after the season ends. So it's great, you know, I can
- 11:36go and see some of my classmates, my professors, but
- 11:40I'm almost done. I got some credits left I got to
- 11:41take care of. Will this make it any easier to
- 11:45get some delay or some? I hope so.
- 11:49Yeah, I hope so. I'll probably ask.
- 11:50I'll just send a picture. Like, yo, I'm a little busy, so
- 11:53maybe I can get some extensions now.
- 11:54But it's been really cool with having the support of Winston,
- 11:58Salem State, you know, they've, they've been behind me since
- 12:03really I started driving when I was in late models as a freshman
- 12:06there and you know, supporting me in the Xfinity races, in the
- 12:09darker car and and other things I've done off the tracks.
- 12:12So it's been great to represent them.
- 12:14Just fine. What you do tonight that you
- 12:16haven't done in a few years since you last won?
- 12:22I don't know, actually, like I said, I'm just trying to take it
- 12:24in just because. I mean, it's my first right?
- 12:29But you never know what will happen again.
- 12:30So what? Oh, oh, I'm sorry.
- 12:36I I didn't really do anything different.
- 12:38I think the last, you know 1012 races that I've done I've just
- 12:42kind of just try to be pretty calm and just do the race that
- 12:45best I can and and not let my guard down like Daytona let my
- 12:48guard down there off of two and you know that led to all the
- 12:51things there. But otherwise I think I've just
- 12:53been keeping the same energy and it just worked out tonight.
- 12:57So now you'll see what happens when I I get in.
- 13:00Good stuff. Something.
- 13:01I'm thankful for that. Go here.
- 13:05Mitchell Brewer Black had sports Raja bouncing off that.
- 13:09You had a lot of criticism after Daytona for the ending of that
- 13:13race tonight. It seemed like a very well
- 13:15executed race on your part, racing very clean passing guys
- 13:19like Kyle Busch. What's it mean to just be able
- 13:22to like have such a performance like that after Daytona and
- 13:26everything that happened there? Man I think personally it's
- 13:29great in in my own mind, right Because like like after Daytona
- 13:33I I got a lot of Flack, man. And I really feel like I didn't
- 13:35deserve it because it wasn't something I did on purpose and
- 13:38similar things happened. The Xfinity race and the Cup
- 13:40race and a lot of that stuff I just, I didn't really appreciate
- 13:43because it it was again not somebody did on purpose and you
- 13:47know it's it's racing right. But I think tonight you know,
- 13:51earning the race, the win, tonight, racing clean like you
- 13:55said I I learned a lot and hopefully it's just some
- 13:58validation right. I think for myself it hopes just
- 14:02because obviously you have your own doubts and you know self
- 14:06talk is a really important thing and so it's it's great to kind
- 14:08of get over that hump a little bit.
- 14:10So I just got to keep going and you know, lean on on my circle.
