- 2:02Speaker 3: weeks away from election day. State Senator Mike Stewart will
- 2:05Speaker 3: be joining us a little bit later on. Always interesting
- 2:07Speaker 3: to get his take on things, including he's taken an
- 2:10Speaker 3: interest in some of these school consolidation proceedings in Kanawa County.
- 2:13Speaker 3: We saw another one that was up for vote last night,
- 2:16Speaker 3: the Knawa County School Board voting five to nothing to
- 2:18Speaker 3: close that particular school. We'll get into that a little
- 2:20Speaker 3: bit later on. Anthony Lewis from HD Media and the
- 2:23Speaker 3: Touchdown City podcast is here. Anthony is like mister WVU sports,
- 2:27Speaker 3: particularly football. There is a special event though that he
- 2:29Speaker 3: and some other folks were organizing this Saturday night at
- 2:32Speaker 3: Buffalo Wild Wings and Cross Lanes to help out some
- 2:34Speaker 3: local charities. Of course, it's all wrapped around the WVU
- 2:37Speaker 3: Arizona game. We'll get into that with Anthony a little
- 2:39Speaker 3: bit later on. Plus, we're gonna be talking to candidate
- 2:42Speaker 3: for West Virginia State Auditimiria Clater.
- 2:44Speaker 6: She is in studio with us.
- 2:45Speaker 3: We'll get to her momentarily, but right now, as we've
- 2:47Speaker 3: been doing each morning since you started out on this trek.
- 2:50Speaker 6: Let's go live to the road.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Speaks to our man Rob Reel from her sister stations
- 2:54Speaker 3: Superstar Country ninety six to one KWS, who set out
- 2:57Speaker 3: last week on a quest to walk a big old
- 2:59Speaker 3: check from her studios here in downtown Charleston to Children's
- 3:03Speaker 3: a WVU Children's Hospital in Morgantown. Rob, good morning, welcome
- 3:06Speaker 3: to the show.
- 3:08Speaker 7: Good morning, and the road for the next couple of days,
- 3:11Speaker 7: he is going to be thirty three one nineteen. I
- 3:14Speaker 7: stepped off from the Why in Arnoldsburg this morning about
- 3:18Speaker 7: an hour ago and making my way toward Normantown. Got
- 3:22Speaker 7: a little farther yesterday than originally planned. So I'm shooting
- 3:26Speaker 7: for only about fifteen miles today.
- 3:28Speaker 6: And I saw that on your trek.
- 3:31Speaker 3: And by the way, if you're not following Rob's walk,
- 3:33Speaker 3: just go over to the KWS Facebook page because you
- 3:36Speaker 3: can follow along and see exactly where he is and
- 3:38Speaker 3: track his progress and whatnot. What do you attribute you
- 3:42Speaker 3: being able to go a little farther yesterday.
- 3:44Speaker 7: Rob, Mother nature has been fantastic. I got a nice
- 3:50Speaker 7: rest full weekend. I made a few changes in my gear,
- 3:53Speaker 7: let's say, and so I just everything kind of came
- 3:58Speaker 7: together and I was able to get twenty in yesterday
- 4:01Speaker 7: at the prospect of only having to do fifteen today. Actually,
- 4:06Speaker 7: what's pretty helpful, so nice and easy, And I got
- 4:10Speaker 7: to tell you, Mother Nature, Mountain Mama, West Virginia is
- 4:13Speaker 7: just going off. If you do jump on board at
- 4:16Speaker 7: ninety six to one kwus dot com, you start following
- 4:19Speaker 7: us on social media on the face place and the
- 4:21Speaker 7: instance nap, you're gonna see some of those pictures over
- 4:25Speaker 7: the next couple of days of just how gorgeous it
- 4:27Speaker 7: is right now in the Mountain State.
- 4:29Speaker 4: It is.
- 4:29Speaker 3: It's absolutely beautiful, and the fall colors, as you said,
- 4:33Speaker 3: Mountain Mama is definitely showing off. The colors are absolutely beautiful.
- 4:37Speaker 3: And because you are not allowed why I sounded like
- 4:40Speaker 3: there was a straining of restraining order or something there,
- 4:42Speaker 3: but you're not allowed to travel the interstate because of
- 4:45Speaker 3: safety reasons. We didn't care if you travel the interstate,
- 4:48Speaker 3: but the state Police thought otherwise, and Department Highways thought
- 4:50Speaker 3: otherwise about that. You traveling some of these back roads
- 4:53Speaker 3: up there, you're really getting to see. Even the colors
- 4:56Speaker 3: are brilliant everywhere in West Virginia right now, but you're
- 4:58Speaker 3: getting to see areas that are a little bit more
- 5:01Speaker 3: brilliant if you.
- 5:01Speaker 7: Will at some untouched places, some really good thick mountain
- 5:07Speaker 7: side forests that I've seen. And I had a couple
- 5:11Speaker 7: of a couple of individual hours yesterday more than an
- 5:15Speaker 7: hour without a car passing me. That's how sequestered, how
- 5:20Speaker 7: quiet this portion of walked over with panhandle cleaning and
- 5:24Speaker 7: restoration has been. And eventually I'll start getting back to
- 5:28Speaker 7: the busier places, like when I get to Weston later
- 5:31Speaker 7: this week and then eventually Morgantown on Halloween afternoon.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Now again, explain why it is that you are walking,
- 5:37Speaker 3: other than just the exercise and taking in God's glory.
- 5:41Speaker 7: Well, it is because I have a big mouth and
- 5:45Speaker 7: no restraint. So during our Cares for Kids radioson in
- 5:48Speaker 7: August and I was at the Hosteler Center at WVU
- 5:52Speaker 7: Medicine Children's a beginning of date two, I proclaimed, I challenged,
- 5:57Speaker 7: I implored that if folks beat last year's total in
- 6:02Speaker 7: our radiothon that I would personally walk that check from
- 6:06Speaker 7: eleven eleven Virginia Street, East, downtown Charleton to one Medical
- 6:10Speaker 7: Center Drive in Morgantown and deliver it personally. I mean,
- 6:16Speaker 7: I'm not surprised that West Virginians came through. I'm humbled
- 6:20Speaker 7: by that, and I want to make sure that, out
- 6:22Speaker 7: of respect for both folks who joined as superstar miracle
- 6:26Speaker 7: makers and the kids themselves, that I keep my word.
- 6:30Speaker 6: Indeed.
- 6:31Speaker 3: All right, Rob, be safe out there again. There are
- 6:33Speaker 3: worse things. I mean, you're getting to take in all
- 6:35Speaker 3: the beauty of the fall in West Virginia, but you're
- 6:38Speaker 3: also walking twenty miles a day to do it.
- 6:40Speaker 6: Health holding up, okay, old man.
- 6:43Speaker 7: Yeah, you know I'm hanging in there. They haven't threatened
- 6:46Speaker 7: to send me to the Alpo rendering factory just yet.
- 6:50Speaker 7: And we all remember, we've all had a Halloween where
- 6:53Speaker 7: you know, you had to be a ninja and in
- 6:55Speaker 7: a downcoat with you know, at thirty degrees and spitting
- 6:59Speaker 7: rain and snow. Right, yeah, So the idea that the
- 7:03Speaker 7: Mountain Mama is being so cooperative helping me along, somebody
- 7:07Speaker 7: knock on some woods somewhere. That discontinues for another nine
- 7:09Speaker 7: days or so.
- 7:11Speaker 3: All right, Rob, be safe out there again. We'll be
- 7:13Speaker 3: following along on the website and also on the social media's.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I appreciate you being here, Man, Be safe. We'll talking
- 7:18Speaker 3: again tomorrow morning. Thank you, sir, Rob real. He is
- 7:22Speaker 3: on his way to Morgantown with that big old check
- 7:25Speaker 3: for WVU Children's Hospital, walking about twenty miles a day
- 7:29Speaker 3: to get it to Morgantown. Really, as he said, he's
- 7:31Speaker 3: getting to enjoy some of the lovely, lovely colors in
- 7:34Speaker 3: West Virginia as he makes his walk. Dave Allan showing

- 8:02Speaker 3: want to bring in now Mary Ann clayt Or. She
- 8:04Speaker 3: is an Democratic candidate for a West Virginia State auditor.
- 8:06Speaker 3: She joined us now in the par marstore studio. Marianne,
- 8:09Speaker 3: good morning, how are you?
- 8:10Speaker 6: Oh fine? I'll give you a little bit of micro level.
- 8:13Speaker 3: There you okay, okay, there, there you go, There you go, there,
- 8:16Speaker 3: there you go.
- 8:17Speaker 6: Now you're here, you're okay.
- 8:18Speaker 3: The problem with this new studio, by the way, what
- 8:20Speaker 3: do you think about our new digs here?
- 8:21Speaker 6: You like this?
- 8:23Speaker 8: I need to be around a little more people.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Other than just me.
- 8:27Speaker 6: Is that what you're saying?
- 8:27Speaker 3: Come on, Mary, Anne, come on now, girl. It is
- 8:32Speaker 3: a little bit smaller than what we're used to over there.
- 8:35Speaker 3: But the problem of the problems is is that I
- 8:36Speaker 3: can't really see I see the top of your head,
- 8:39Speaker 3: and I can't see how close you are to the microphone.
- 8:41Speaker 3: So I think you may need to scoot in just
- 8:43Speaker 3: a little bit close to Mary Klator is a candidate
- 8:45Speaker 3: for auditor here in the great state of West Virginia.
- 8:47Speaker 3: And now, Mary, and you have run for this office before.
- 8:50Speaker 3: What makes you think now is the right time for
- 8:52Speaker 3: Marian Claytor.
- 8:54Speaker 8: I'm not for sure you know if it about the
- 8:57Speaker 8: right time. I just know that there is a continual
- 9:00Speaker 8: need for somebody like me that actually has accounting an
- 9:04Speaker 8: oddity experience, and I'm not one of those people that
- 9:11Speaker 8: can be pushed around by either party.
- 9:14Speaker 9: So I think it's time for.
- 9:16Speaker 8: It now will I'm hoping that the people of West
- 9:20Speaker 8: Virginia will be more I don't know how to say it.
- 9:28Speaker 9: I don't.
- 9:32Speaker 8: We'll be researching our candidates a little more because the
- 9:35Speaker 8: people I run in on the streets, whether they're no
- 9:38Speaker 8: matter what party they are, when I start talking about
- 9:40Speaker 8: my experience and my vision, then they're like, you know what,
- 9:46Speaker 8: this shouldn't be about politics. This should be about your
- 9:49Speaker 8: experience that you have, and I'm going to vote for you.
- 9:52Speaker 8: Of course, it's hard state. Why to reach it? You know,
- 9:54Speaker 8: you can't reach everybody. I always said, if they could
- 9:58Speaker 8: just meet me that I believe that they would vote
- 10:01Speaker 8: for me, no matter you know, if they normally even
- 10:05Speaker 8: vote straight Republican.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I mean to talk about your experience because this is
- 10:11Speaker 3: a game not you know that you've been around as
- 10:13Speaker 3: a professional in a for a long long time doing
- 10:15Speaker 3: the auditing auditor type thing. Talk about the experience that
- 10:18Speaker 3: you've had that you think makes you qualified to be
- 10:20Speaker 3: the state auditor.
- 10:21Speaker 8: Well, I'm the only candidate actually has accounting degree and
- 10:25Speaker 8: real auditing experience. I worked for twenty two years for
- 10:28Speaker 8: the state Auditor's office. Started my business after my son
- 10:32Speaker 8: became paralyzed from the neck down, continuing some of the
- 10:37Speaker 8: work of preparing financial statements and providing training. And that
- 10:42Speaker 8: is one of the reasons that I decided to run again,
- 10:46Speaker 8: even though you know, our politics are so polarized, but
- 10:49Speaker 8: I knew that the people of West Virginia needed me.
- 10:52Speaker 8: The local governments need someone like me because I am
- 10:57Speaker 8: out there on the ground, and that's what's so different
- 11:00Speaker 8: and most politicians it's a figurehead. I don't want to
- 11:04Speaker 8: be a figurehead. We deserve more than a figurehead. We
- 11:08Speaker 8: just deserve somebody that understands the environment, that has a
- 11:12Speaker 8: track record of making sure that our funds are being
- 11:16Speaker 8: spent properly, people are being trained.
- 11:19Speaker 4: We're on.
- 11:21Speaker 8: We're in a state of emergency basically in local governments
- 11:25Speaker 8: where there's being a turnover of people retiring and that
- 11:31Speaker 8: knowledge has not been passed down and we don't have
- 11:34Speaker 8: the staff available to go out and train them. And
- 11:38Speaker 8: that is the best way to safeguard our money is
- 11:41Speaker 8: to make sure people are properly trained and that we
- 11:45Speaker 8: have somebody that is going to hold them accountable, because
- 11:48Speaker 8: after they still are harder tax dollars, we hardly ever
- 11:51Speaker 8: get that money back, so I want to be more preventive,
- 11:56Speaker 8: and not to say I don't hold people accountable, because
- 11:58Speaker 8: I mean I am known for that.
- 12:00Speaker 3: But absolutely, yeah, you know, what, what exactly are the
- 12:05Speaker 3: duties of state auditor? Because you know, the average person
- 12:07Speaker 3: out on the street here, they know what a governor does,
- 12:09Speaker 3: or they know, you know, what's.
- 12:10Speaker 6: What their legislators do.
- 12:11Speaker 3: But many people, when you throw out the term state auditor,
- 12:14Speaker 3: you think, well, obviously it's going to have to do
- 12:16Speaker 3: with numbers. But what exactly in your definition are the
- 12:20Speaker 3: duties of the state auditor.
- 12:21Speaker 8: So we, by co we are the bookkeeper for the
- 12:24Speaker 8: state of West Virginia, so we are responsible for the expenditures,
- 12:28Speaker 8: making sure they are in compliance, and the record keeping
- 12:33Speaker 8: of those funds. But we also have this extra duty
- 12:36Speaker 8: that is the supervisor of public offices, and in that
- 12:39Speaker 8: capacity we audit the school boards, the municipalities, the county,
- 12:46Speaker 8: all the elected officials at the county, magistra court systems,
- 12:51Speaker 8: fire departments, board of Health, econog, development authorities, amulest Authority.
- 12:58Speaker 8: There are lots and we're also responsible for the training
- 13:02Speaker 8: of local governments. We're responsible for issuing guidance to the
- 13:06Speaker 8: local governments. The funding that came down from the federal government.
- 13:12Speaker 8: That definitely has to be we got to do a
- 13:15Speaker 8: boost in making sure people are educated on how they
- 13:18Speaker 8: can spend that money. I'm very concerned about the opioid
- 13:21Speaker 8: settlement money because I'm not seeing the transparency and the
- 13:25Speaker 8: money that was given to local governments.
- 13:29Speaker 5: So we're we're.
- 13:30Speaker 8: We're like the watch dog for the people of West Virginia,
- 13:34Speaker 8: and we need to make sure that people can believe
- 13:37Speaker 8: the numbers, that the information that's put out there it
- 13:40Speaker 8: is secure. It can't that it is not that it's
- 13:43Speaker 8: tamper proof. And I would be very for your friendly
- 13:48Speaker 8: because I believe the citizens is the citizens' records. Of course,
- 13:52Speaker 8: there are things, you know, there are some information that
- 13:54Speaker 8: will have.
- 13:55Speaker 4: To be.
- 13:57Speaker 8: Redocted, but I believe they have the right to know
- 14:00Speaker 8: how their money is being spent.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Talking to Mary and later again, who is a Democrat
- 14:05Speaker 3: nominee or a yeah, Democrat nominee for State Auditor of
- 14:08Speaker 3: the State of West Virginia. The Dave Allen Show and
- 14:10Speaker 3: five Eddy Live brought to you in part by Pinnacle Consultants.

- 14:19Speaker 3: Pinnacle Court dot net because what you don't know can't
- 14:21Speaker 3: hurt you. Current state Auditor, of course, J. B. Mccusky
- 14:24Speaker 3: is opting to run for and said the Attorney General,
- 14:28Speaker 3: are you a fan.
- 14:29Speaker 6: Of the of the of the state checkbook program that
- 14:32Speaker 6: we have.
- 14:35Speaker 8: I think it was a great idea that he actually
- 14:37Speaker 8: got from Ohio, but we need to make sure. I
- 14:42Speaker 8: don't like the way the information gets put in. I'm
- 14:45Speaker 8: a big proponent on source documents, information coming straight from
- 14:49Speaker 8: the source documents, and I have a relationship with some
- 14:52Speaker 8: of the software companies that deal with our local governments,
- 14:57Speaker 8: and just like it during the pandemic, we've always had
- 15:00Speaker 8: where you could go look up if people pay their
- 15:02Speaker 8: taxes and stuff, and so that they could pay that way.
- 15:06Speaker 8: And I feel like in the larger counties that we
- 15:09Speaker 8: in municipalities that we need to be able to have
- 15:13Speaker 8: that we would share the link to that data and
- 15:16Speaker 8: that that data would come straight from that system, not
- 15:19Speaker 8: manipulate it before it gets to us, and then it
- 15:23Speaker 8: would be real time.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Also, do you have a website or Facebook page or
- 15:27Speaker 3: something people could learn more about you?
- 15:29Speaker 8: So it's audit thestate dot com and on there is
- 15:33Speaker 8: the link to be able to get to the Facebook
- 15:35Speaker 8: and the Twitter and.
- 15:37Speaker 6: All the all the things.
- 15:38Speaker 8: Yeah, all the things.
- 15:40Speaker 3: So what have you heard when you're out on a
- 15:42Speaker 3: campaign trail. I know that you spend some time. I've
- 15:44Speaker 3: seen you, follow you on social media and seen you
- 15:46Speaker 3: out of different events. What do you hear from the
- 15:47Speaker 3: people of West Virginia.
- 15:49Speaker 8: Well, some people had kind of stepped back. I feel
- 15:56Speaker 8: like they just feel like their vote didn't count. So
- 15:59Speaker 8: I try to explain to them that, you know, there's
- 16:02Speaker 8: races where they've been won by one vote, and your
- 16:05Speaker 8: vote always counts. That this is a popular vote, it's
- 16:09Speaker 8: not like the presidency. And also for them, you know
- 16:11Speaker 8: a lot of people concentrate just on the top and
- 16:14Speaker 8: I'm like, you know, we have some really good candidates
- 16:17Speaker 8: down ballot. They're very qualified for their positions, and that
- 16:20Speaker 8: we have to be careful whenever there is a supermajority,
- 16:24Speaker 8: even when the Democrats were a super majority. That everybody
- 16:28Speaker 8: doesn't have your same principles and your values. Just because
- 16:31Speaker 8: you look at that r you look at that d
- 16:33Speaker 8: that people switch parties like they change their underwear. So
- 16:37Speaker 8: you know, to fool you into basically voting for them,
- 16:40Speaker 8: because you know, like when the R when the D's
- 16:44Speaker 8: were popular, we had everybody was switched to D's and
- 16:49Speaker 8: and a lot of you know people. At near the
- 16:51Speaker 8: end of that transition, we're questioning the candidates, and I
- 16:55Speaker 8: think we're at that point where we've got to start
- 16:58Speaker 8: questioning the candidates because they're switching parties. I didn't switch
- 17:03Speaker 8: parties because I'm not going to try to fool anybody
- 17:06Speaker 8: into for anything. I'm really probably more of an independent
- 17:10Speaker 8: if you really of course, you know, I don't know
- 17:15Speaker 8: if it's possible for somebody that's not in one of
- 17:17Speaker 8: the major parties to even have a chance. But so
- 17:22Speaker 8: I just wasn't gonna switch up like I'm riding.
- 17:24Speaker 3: It out, Mary, and give me, give me thirty seconds.
- 17:29Speaker 3: I called this the final third. Give me thirty seconds,
- 17:31Speaker 3: not timed on why you feel you are the better
- 17:35Speaker 3: choice for state auditor for the people of West Virginia.
- 17:38Speaker 8: I believe that we need to hold the same standard
- 17:40Speaker 8: that we do. If I were to go in and
- 17:43Speaker 8: apply for an auditor position, you've got to have an
- 17:46Speaker 8: accounting degree. I mean, that is the basic requirement and
- 17:50Speaker 8: so I feel like when this is a position that
- 17:54Speaker 8: my opponent actually voted for, the raise for for this
- 18:00Speaker 8: and it we are making more than the average West
- 18:03Speaker 8: Virginia and so that we should be held to a
- 18:06Speaker 8: higher standard and that we should have minimum qualifications for
- 18:11Speaker 8: the positions that we are running for.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Mary Anne, I wish you the best of luck this
- 18:16Speaker 3: time around and you in your bid to be state audit.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Thanks a lot, good luck over the next couple of weeks.
- 18:20Speaker 6: We'll talk soon.
- 18:21Speaker 8: Okay, I thought you were gonna have me sing a
- 18:23Speaker 8: song or.
- 18:23Speaker 6: So, she and I was texting back.
- 18:27Speaker 3: I always likes to text my guests the night before
- 18:29Speaker 3: to make sure that everything's good, and she said something
- 18:31Speaker 3: about singing the song, and I said, well, there's got
- 18:33Speaker 3: to be a dance that comes with a song, and
- 18:34Speaker 3: then she responded, you're not getting a dance, only a song.
- 18:37Speaker 3: So unfortunately, now maybe Anthony Lewis will sing for us.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Does that want to get Anthony Lewis or maybe Mike
- 18:42Speaker 3: Stewart when he's on a little bit later on Mary
- 18:44Speaker 3: and Klaytor, I appreciate you being here.
- 18:45Speaker 6: Best of luft to you. We'll talk soon.

- 22:19Speaker 3: This morning, Anthony, good morning, welcome to our new home.
- 22:22Speaker 4: It's beautiful here.
- 22:23Speaker 6: I like it's great. Yeah like it pretty good.
- 22:25Speaker 9: Yeah, nice set up. It's crazy that this might just
- 22:28Speaker 9: be the temporary home.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, well the new home is going to be
- 22:32Speaker 3: where the old home was, and this was kind of
- 22:34Speaker 3: the transition, you know, and you're on I'm sure they've
- 22:36Speaker 3: explained it to you when you're on with with with
- 22:38Speaker 3: Coop and a weekly on on hotline. But yeah, we
- 22:41Speaker 3: kind of like it here. Once we learn how to
- 22:43Speaker 3: operate everything though, we'll be ready to move again. That's
- 22:46Speaker 3: the that's what the problem is that works. I want
- 22:48Speaker 3: to before we get to talk about this big deal
- 22:50Speaker 3: that you're that you're doing this big fundraiser because you
- 22:53Speaker 3: work a lot with the with the Sugar Bowl Foundation.
- 22:56Speaker 3: I think it's called I want to talk about Mountaineer football.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Not a good night this past week in Morgantown, and
- 23:02Speaker 3: it almost looked like a mash unit. Listening to Neil
- 23:05Speaker 3: Brown talk yesterday.
- 23:06Speaker 9: Your take, I've not seen a team get beat up
- 23:10Speaker 9: a West Virginia team get beat up like they got
- 23:12Speaker 9: beat up the other night. It's been a while since
- 23:14Speaker 9: you've seen someone come in and kind of push West
- 23:16Speaker 9: Virginia round. If anything, if West Virginia didn't have the
- 23:19Speaker 9: talent they were definitely we're going to stand and knuckle
- 23:22Speaker 9: up with you, especially under the Kneland regime and even
- 23:24Speaker 9: the rich Rock regime and a little bit under the
- 23:26Speaker 9: Holgerson regime. But this team the other night got pretty
- 23:29Speaker 9: beat up and it showed on the field with concussions
- 23:31Speaker 9: and guys getting hurt. And Kansas State was very physical
- 23:38Speaker 9: and also too the second half was abysmal. I mean
- 23:41Speaker 9: the second half of that football game. At no point
- 23:45Speaker 9: did I feel like after they didn't get the fourth
- 23:48Speaker 9: or the fourth and goal. At no point after that
- 23:51Speaker 9: did I feel like West Virginia was going to have
- 23:52Speaker 9: an opportunity to come back and win that game.
- 23:55Speaker 6: So we had Arizona this week. Yeah, that's a tough flight.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Another national television game. I think a f FS one.
- 24:03Speaker 3: I think's got it. Well, you know, people need to
- 24:05Speaker 3: listen to our coverage of the game anyway. Uh But
- 24:07Speaker 3: I was listening to coach Brown yesterday talking about and
- 24:10Speaker 3: he said he kind of likened it to the trip
- 24:12Speaker 3: and we make every other year out the Lubbock. He said,
- 24:13Speaker 3: it's really not much farther than that, and this time
- 24:15Speaker 3: they're flying out of Pittsburgh, which I'm kind of I'm
- 24:18Speaker 3: always kind of a geek for like the logistics of this.
- 24:20Speaker 3: They normally fly to Clarksburg, but they're flying out of Pittsburgh.
- 24:23Speaker 3: He didn't seem to have sort of an issue with that.
- 24:25Speaker 3: I don't know exactly what it was, but he didn't
- 24:27Speaker 3: really want to fly to Pittsburgh. But nonetheless, it's a
- 24:29Speaker 3: banged up team heading out to Arizona this week, Anthony.
- 24:32Speaker 9: Yeah, and and they're gonna they're really gonna have to
- 24:35Speaker 9: suck it up and go. I mean, we'll see what
- 24:37Speaker 9: they're made out of. And they should. At this point
- 24:40Speaker 9: in the regime with Neil Brown, it should be next
- 24:43Speaker 9: man up mentality. The next guy's the number two, number
- 24:47Speaker 9: three guys should be ready to go. And at this
- 24:49Speaker 9: point you've had an opportunity to fill your roster and
- 24:51Speaker 9: get guys, you know, in positions to where they can
- 24:55Speaker 9: come step in and and obviously your ones are obviously
- 24:58Speaker 9: better than your twos, but we shouldn't at this point
- 25:00Speaker 9: see a lot of drop off. So hopefully they're ready
- 25:02Speaker 9: to go. I know that's a long trip flying out
- 25:05Speaker 9: of Pittsburgh, and I was curious, I wonder why they're
- 25:08Speaker 9: doing that, But I'm guessing since it's the first time
- 25:11Speaker 9: that they've been to Arizona, there's just a lot more people.
- 25:14Speaker 6: Going on the trip.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Well, and it's uh, Administrator, it's going to be like
- 25:18Speaker 3: in the nighties. I mean, it is Arizona. So but
- 25:20Speaker 3: they're expecting some some warm temperatures, not the comfortable confines
- 25:24Speaker 3: that we've had in Mountaineerfield over the last couple weeks.
- 25:26Speaker 3: All right, let's get to this cement this Saturday night.
- 25:28Speaker 3: It's going to be held at Buffalo Wild Wings. It's
- 25:31Speaker 3: out of Cross Lanes Nitro Marketplace. It's it's kind of
- 25:34Speaker 3: a watch party, I guess, of sorts of the Arizona game.
- 25:37Speaker 3: But there's going to be a special guest out there.
- 25:39Speaker 3: How cool is this? You get to watch the game
- 25:41Speaker 3: with mountaineer legend Stedman Ale. How cool is that? So
- 25:45Speaker 3: over the last fourteen years, and I'll go back to
- 25:47Speaker 3: the beginning. Yes, I was working in the press, and
- 25:52Speaker 3: I'd been at the Davis Shelter in Charleston and was
- 25:55Speaker 3: on my way to an Angel Tree event and I
- 25:58Speaker 3: said to that, hey, I gotta go.
- 25:59Speaker 6: I gotta go to this thing.
- 26:00Speaker 9: And she said, oh, that's a great program they've got.
- 26:04Speaker 9: She said, it's just sad that our kids here get missed.
- 26:07Speaker 9: And I said, well, what do you mean. She said,
- 26:08Speaker 9: our kids are teenagers, so when they do toy drives
- 26:11Speaker 9: and things like that, people send toys for smaller trades.
- 26:15Speaker 9: And she said, our kids are teenagers, so they don't
- 26:18Speaker 9: really fit into that demo and that I don't know why.
- 26:20Speaker 9: That really stuck with me, so later that year, I
- 26:23Speaker 9: went out and I bought ten at the time digital
- 26:26Speaker 9: cameras out of pocket and took them up there on
- 26:29Speaker 9: Christmas morning for those kids. And then I thought to myself, well,
- 26:32Speaker 9: how can we can you continue to serve these kids
- 26:37Speaker 9: that are missed? And then I thought, well, we can
- 26:41Speaker 9: have a watch party and I can call my friends
- 26:43Speaker 9: from the university or my former players that are former
- 26:45Speaker 9: players and get things in and and it just took
- 26:49Speaker 9: off from there. So the people at Buffalo wil Wing's
- 26:52Speaker 9: at Nighter Marketplace, the old general manager CC. Honestly, at
- 26:57Speaker 9: first nobody wanted to even let me do the event.
- 27:00Speaker 9: They just thought I was going to come in and
- 27:01Speaker 9: take up space and run off the regular and they
- 27:04Speaker 9: opened the doors and from that point on we've had
- 27:06Speaker 9: it there. And this is our fourteenth year, and it's
- 27:10Speaker 9: grown to the point where not only do we serve
- 27:13Speaker 9: the kids at Davis, but we've now taken on the
- 27:17Speaker 9: Cross Lanes YMCA because they have a large number of
- 27:21Speaker 9: kids that that need support it during that time, so
- 27:26Speaker 9: we help them as well. And then my daughter has
- 27:29Speaker 9: an older sister who's a teacher, and she started doing
- 27:32Speaker 9: something for her kids. So I just told her, Hey,
- 27:35Speaker 9: let me take care of them as well. So it's
- 27:38Speaker 9: turned into a big event and we get a lot
- 27:41Speaker 9: of great support, a lot of community support. The former
- 27:44Speaker 9: police stedman, I'll be honest with you, I don't have
- 27:48Speaker 9: a personal relationship with him outside of just interviewing him
- 27:51Speaker 9: a few times. But I called him and told him
- 27:53Speaker 9: what we do and and he was like, yeah, just
- 27:56Speaker 9: boke me a flight and I'll come. And it's that
- 27:59Speaker 9: type of response from the players, the former players. And
- 28:02Speaker 9: he lives in South Florida, who's in Miami, so he's
- 28:05Speaker 9: not here very much. So but his connection to West
- 28:08Speaker 9: Virginia and connection to West Virginia kids brings him back.
- 28:12Speaker 9: And the guys are awesome, Like you can, I can
- 28:15Speaker 9: call any of these guys say hey, Mark Boulger, Mark, Hey,
- 28:18Speaker 9: I need some monograph pictures. Yeah, send them down, I'll
- 28:20Speaker 9: sign them, send them right back. So I always have
- 28:22Speaker 9: to give the guys, the former players that continue to
- 28:26Speaker 9: give back to the state of Western.
- 28:27Speaker 3: And as you said, many of them who don't really
- 28:28Speaker 3: quote unquote have ties to this state other than the
- 28:31Speaker 3: fact that they put on the gold and blue and
- 28:33Speaker 3: that left. Obviously, it says something about the State of
- 28:36Speaker 3: West Virginia because and the WVU because it left a
- 28:39Speaker 3: mark on them. Even though ideally they should just fly
- 28:42Speaker 3: out here and they would be the end of it.
- 28:43Speaker 3: They go to the NFL or go on about their
- 28:45Speaker 3: their respective careers whatever. And I've had an opportunity to
- 28:48Speaker 3: sit down and watch some football games with these former guys.
- 28:50Speaker 3: I've done it with with Major Harris, and I've did
- 28:53Speaker 3: it with a couple of the other players as well.
- 28:55Speaker 3: It's a totally different thing when you set down and
- 28:59Speaker 3: they can know that. This is why they make such
- 29:02Speaker 3: great analyst on television and radio, because they see things
- 29:05Speaker 3: that average fans don't see and to see them, well,
- 29:08Speaker 3: this is what he should have done here, This is
- 29:09Speaker 3: what the coach should have called here. This event is
- 29:12Speaker 3: free to attend, right.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Free to attend.
- 29:14Speaker 3: But obviously you have I mean, you're trying to raise
- 29:17Speaker 3: a little money, so how will you do just whatever?
- 29:19Speaker 3: They want to give a say kind of thing.
- 29:20Speaker 9: So people have an opportunity to kind of sponsor slash
- 29:23Speaker 9: reserve their seats. I have so many spaces carved out,
- 29:27Speaker 9: so if you would like to do that, you can
- 29:29Speaker 9: head over to our website at Sugar Bowl Foundation dot Org.
- 29:32Speaker 9: And what you can do is reserve a spot so
- 29:35Speaker 9: you don't have to fight the crowd. But if you
- 29:37Speaker 9: want to roll the dice and just come in and
- 29:38Speaker 9: get a seat, you're welcome to do. So we'll have
- 29:42Speaker 9: I started putting it all together last night. I think
- 29:44Speaker 9: we have about forty silent auction items. We've got jerseys
- 29:48Speaker 9: from David Sills, Pacman Jones, Will Greer, a long list
- 29:54Speaker 9: of guys, but autographed items from Steve Slayton, Owen Schmidt,
- 29:58Speaker 9: Pat White, Mark Bolger, Gary Stills, you name it. We
- 30:03Speaker 9: have autographed items, so that stuff will be up for auction.
- 30:06Speaker 9: Then at halftime we do a huge raffle. We got
- 30:08Speaker 9: twenty items that are donated and we've got a Garrett
- 30:12Speaker 9: Green jersey and a Pat White jersey as a grand prize,
- 30:14Speaker 9: and eighteen other items including gift certificates from restaurants, Ridgie Barbecue,
- 30:21Speaker 9: Child Taie, We've got a bottle of Buffalo Trace that
- 30:25Speaker 9: someone donated. I mean, we've got so there's twenty items,
- 30:28Speaker 9: so that helps us raise money. And then of course
- 30:31Speaker 9: we'll if you want to get autograph pictures, we'll have
- 30:33Speaker 9: pictures of Steedman and we've got footballs and helmets and
- 30:38Speaker 9: that type of thing. So that's how we raise our funds,
- 30:41Speaker 9: and I've kind of designed it. You've probably been to
- 30:43Speaker 9: these things where, you know, fundraisers. We want everyone to
- 30:48Speaker 9: be there, no matter if they got five bucks to
- 30:50Speaker 9: give or if they've got a thousand dollars to give,
- 30:52Speaker 9: and we try to design it that way because there's
- 30:54Speaker 9: been many times I've been locked out of events. I'm like,
- 30:57Speaker 9: that'd be great to go to, but yeah, I don't
- 30:58Speaker 9: have five hundred bucks for two, you know, So we
- 31:01Speaker 9: try to design it to where everyone can participate. Every
- 31:04Speaker 9: can take part of the experience no matter what. And
- 31:06Speaker 9: bring your kids. He'll step them on the table. And
- 31:08Speaker 9: we don't charge for pictures. Like every little thing. The
- 31:11Speaker 9: only thing we ask is if you bring your own
- 31:13Speaker 9: stuff and make a donation. If you need a picture,
- 31:17Speaker 9: we'll have pictures. You can make a donation to any
- 31:19Speaker 9: amount you're.
- 31:19Speaker 6: Not really what.
- 31:21Speaker 9: We don't even look just here, five or five hundred,
- 31:23Speaker 9: you know, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. We don't
- 31:25Speaker 9: even look at the amount. We just throw it in
- 31:26Speaker 9: the bucket and keep it.
- 31:27Speaker 6: What time does the event start?
- 31:29Speaker 9: So the game starts at seven. The event starts at six.
- 31:33Speaker 9: If you're nervous about seating and you don't want to
- 31:36Speaker 9: reserve something, I suggest coming a little earlier before six
- 31:39Speaker 9: o'clock and just go ahead and park and just say, hey,
- 31:41Speaker 9: we're here for the event tonight, and park yourself in
- 31:43Speaker 9: the restaurant.
- 31:44Speaker 3: I mean, and he I said that, throw this out
- 31:46Speaker 3: to the Mountaineer faithful. I mean, not a whole lot
- 31:49Speaker 3: of people are going to be taking the trip out
- 31:50Speaker 3: to Arizona. So you're gonna watch the game somewhere somewhere,
- 31:53Speaker 3: you know, do you want to watch it? I mean,
- 31:55Speaker 3: you watch it in your home, but do you want
- 31:57Speaker 3: to come out to Buffalo Wild Wings have some great
- 31:59Speaker 3: food and US folks Buffalo Wild Wings.
- 32:00Speaker 6: I'll give a big shout out to them.
- 32:02Speaker 3: They do so many things in the community that a
- 32:05Speaker 3: lot of quote unquote change corporations don't do, so I'll
- 32:09Speaker 3: give them big props for that.
- 32:10Speaker 9: Like I told you, nobody locally wanted to support this
- 32:14Speaker 9: fourteen years ago. And I just happened to be in

- 37:33Speaker 3: the first full day, first day, I should say of
- 37:36Speaker 3: early voting in West Virginia. There are ten full days
- 37:38Speaker 3: leading up to the general election, and including two Saturdays.
- 37:42Speaker 3: We'll talk with West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Horner
- 37:44Speaker 3: about that coming up on tomorrow's show. Last night, to
- 37:47Speaker 3: a no one surprise, the Canawa County Commission or come
- 37:50Speaker 3: on and try that again at Connawk County Board voted
- 37:53Speaker 3: five to nothing to close Maulden Elementary. That meeting held
- 37:56Speaker 3: last night at Riverside High There's another one coming up
- 37:59Speaker 3: tonight for another school. One person not exactly thrilled with
- 38:03Speaker 3: all the state all that's going on with this is
- 38:05Speaker 3: say Senator Mike Stewart, do you want to talk about
- 38:07Speaker 3: that and a couple of other things to Senator Stewart's
- 38:09Speaker 3: in the studio, good morning, welcome to the show.
- 38:11Speaker 4: Hey, good morning, thanks for having me.
- 38:13Speaker 3: So last night, again they voted five to nothing the
- 38:16Speaker 3: BOE in Kana County, and it was to no one's
- 38:19Speaker 3: surprise that, as a matter of fact, I think on
- 38:21Speaker 3: these school consolidation and closing hearings, I think at maybe
- 38:25Speaker 3: one of them there was one no vote, but the
- 38:27Speaker 3: rest of them have been unanimous. What do you make
- 38:30Speaker 3: of all of these announcements of these school closings and
- 38:32Speaker 3: or consolidation, Senator.
- 38:33Speaker 4: Well, we've gone the wrong way on this entire subject, consolidation.
- 38:38Speaker 4: We have great teachers in our schools, and the challenge
- 38:42Speaker 4: we have is consolidation. We should be talking deconsolidation. And
- 38:46Speaker 4: what we don't do is spend enough time talking about
- 38:49Speaker 4: our communities and the impact local schools have not only
- 38:52Speaker 4: on those communities, but the students in those schools. These hearings,
- 38:56Speaker 4: these are fake hearings. I'm just telling you they're fake hearings.
- 39:00Speaker 4: You don't need to have these hearings, and they're going
- 39:01Speaker 4: to vote exactly the way they are. These are good
- 39:03Speaker 4: people who serve on the school board. I don't mean
- 39:05Speaker 4: to disparage them, but the result is already written in stone.
- 39:09Speaker 4: If this were a football game, the scoreboards already filled
- 39:13Speaker 4: out at the end of the game before the game
- 39:15Speaker 4: even gets started. Why are our kids failing in our
- 39:18Speaker 4: schools because we've consolidated our kids out of their communities.
- 39:22Speaker 4: We need to be talking deconsolidation. I'm going to continue
- 39:26Speaker 4: to talk about the subject. Our test scores continue to
- 39:30Speaker 4: go down, down, down, and we continue to consolidate in
- 39:35Speaker 4: order to save a buck. But I can tell you
- 39:37Speaker 4: there are certain school systems around West Virginia. I'll give
- 39:40Speaker 4: you one Van down in Boone County. Van's test scores
- 39:43Speaker 4: very small school, very small. They've talked about consolidating them
- 39:47Speaker 4: into the Scott High School system.
- 39:50Speaker 6: There.
- 39:51Speaker 4: Their test scores are off the charts, reading, writing, arithmetic,
- 39:56Speaker 4: They got it, and they do very well. When they
- 39:59Speaker 4: go on to or vocational education, they do great. But
- 40:04Speaker 4: we need to be thinking more about the idea of
- 40:07Speaker 4: consolidation versus deconsolidation. You know, Florida was one of the
- 40:11Speaker 4: first states to talk about consolidation and to do it.
- 40:14Speaker 4: Florida was also the first state to start talking deconsolidation,
- 40:18Speaker 4: and I think that if you track test scores that
- 40:20Speaker 4: have dropped and dropped and dropped, you match it with consolidation.
- 40:24Speaker 4: We've got great teachers, we need teachers to be in
- 40:27Speaker 4: the classrooms and local communities. Let parents have more authority
- 40:30Speaker 4: in those classrooms, and I think you'll see things improve quickly.
- 40:35Speaker 3: Talk about the economics though, Mike, I mean, you're a
- 40:37Speaker 3: smart guy. You realize then they'll say it costs more
- 40:40Speaker 3: and more to operate these schools.
- 40:41Speaker 6: A lot of these schools are older.
- 40:43Speaker 3: Some cases you can't even get parts for the things
- 40:45Speaker 3: that they need to fix the schools. I mean, I
- 40:47Speaker 3: know you understand the economic aspect, there's no question.
- 40:50Speaker 4: And so as a Republican, there's no question. I like
- 40:52Speaker 4: tax cuts and I like budget control. But there's one
- 40:55Speaker 4: area where we shouldn't be holding up costs, and that's
- 40:58Speaker 4: in the education realm. Talk about it all the time.
- 41:01Speaker 4: This is the most important area that we can invest
- 41:03Speaker 4: in as our students in our local communities, and I
- 41:07Speaker 4: think it's important we put our money where our mouth
- 41:10Speaker 4: is on this. And I'm fully understanding of the issue
- 41:14Speaker 4: of the cost of operating local schools. If we need
- 41:17Speaker 4: to spend more, we need to spend more, but we
- 41:19Speaker 4: need results in the classroom. We're not getting those. We
- 41:22Speaker 4: can consolidate it down the one school in West Virginia.
- 41:26Speaker 4: It's a bad idea, This idea of people riding a
- 41:28Speaker 4: school bus for over an hour one way on the
- 41:31Speaker 4: way to school, it's a terrible idea. It's bad for
- 41:34Speaker 4: the student, it's bad for the communities. And let's talk
- 41:38Speaker 4: about extracurriculars that do matter. They matter. I was a
- 41:42Speaker 4: kid who was schooled in very local schools, small schools,
- 41:47Speaker 4: perhaps not the most sophisticated of schools, not brand new buildings,
- 41:52Speaker 4: but I think I'd like to think I got a
- 41:54Speaker 4: pretty good education behind it. And I think it's important
- 41:57Speaker 4: that Johnny and Susie be able to participate in students council,
- 42:00Speaker 4: play on the football team, be able to play on
- 42:03Speaker 4: the soccer team. But if they have to commute one
- 42:05Speaker 4: way to school and one way back home, how easy
- 42:09Speaker 4: is it for mom and dad when they're struggling just
- 42:11Speaker 4: to get by, to be able to get Johnny or
- 42:13Speaker 4: Susie back to school, to be able to play in
- 42:16Speaker 4: the band or be able to play on the football team.
- 42:19Speaker 4: It's not possible. We need to think about the whole
- 42:21Speaker 4: student and the communities when we talk about these issues.
- 42:25Speaker 6: I want to move on.
- 42:26Speaker 3: While the posters say, Mike that their Senator Stewart that
- 42:29Speaker 3: the presidential election between former President Trump and VICKI of
- 42:33Speaker 3: VP Kamala Harris will be close, you say, in the
- 42:36Speaker 3: words of Lee Corso, not so fast, my friend, you're
- 42:40Speaker 3: calling for a Trump landslide.
- 42:41Speaker 4: It's going to be a landslide.
- 42:43Speaker 6: Listen.
- 42:43Speaker 4: I think there are a lot of people out there that
- 42:44Speaker 4: are hurting, and they know that we need change, and
- 42:47Speaker 4: they look at Kamala Harris and they're wondering, how in
- 42:50Speaker 4: the world did somebody like that get to the point
- 42:53Speaker 4: of being a nominee of a party. Joe Biden would
- 42:55Speaker 4: have been a far better nominee for the Democrats. If
- 42:58Speaker 4: you're a Democrat voter and you're looking at what's going
- 43:01Speaker 4: to happen on Tuesday, two weeks from today, you ought
- 43:04Speaker 4: to be pretty angry because Joe Biden won that nomination
- 43:07Speaker 4: and it was stolen by establishment folks, insiders of the
- 43:11Speaker 4: Democrat Party who panicked Joe Biden would have been a
- 43:14Speaker 4: far better nominee. This is going to be a landslide.
- 43:17Speaker 4: There are a lot of people are going to vote
- 43:18Speaker 4: for Trump. They're not going to put a sign in
- 43:20Speaker 4: the yard. They're not gonna wear a Maga hat. They're
- 43:22Speaker 4: not gonna go to a rally. They're going to quietly
- 43:24Speaker 4: go to the polls. They're going to check the box
- 43:26Speaker 4: for Donald Trump and other candidates to stand for change.
- 43:30Speaker 4: They're gonna go home. They're going to watch the results
- 43:32Speaker 4: in the next morning. They're going to try to get
- 43:34Speaker 4: their kids out to school and get to work. It's
- 43:36Speaker 4: a very simple election. I think it's going to be
- 43:38Speaker 4: a landslide. I see where it's going. I saw this
- 43:41Speaker 4: back in nineteen eighty four, a very very tight election
- 43:45Speaker 4: between Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale, and on the final
- 43:48Speaker 4: weeks you could see it moving and moving quickly. I
- 43:52Speaker 4: point out tomorrow is early voting. It's unusual for a
- 43:55Speaker 4: Republican to say, go vote early. I want Republicans to
- 43:59Speaker 4: vote early. I want them to get to the polls
- 44:02Speaker 4: as soon as they can mark those ballots. I can
- 44:05Speaker 4: tell you this. I do believe that if it's close,
- 44:07Speaker 4: they're going to try to steal it. I know we're
- 44:09Speaker 4: going to get some calls on that. I think we
- 44:12Speaker 4: have to win this by overwhelming margins. I think it's
- 44:15Speaker 4: gonna happen. I think they make the call on election night.
- 44:19Speaker 3: If it goes the opposite direction, though, Senator, and Kamala
- 44:21Speaker 3: Harris does win, would you used to say she won't.
- 44:23Speaker 3: But if Kamala Harris does win, would you be willing
- 44:26Speaker 3: to come out and say if it's overwhelming, if it's overwhelming,
- 44:29Speaker 3: to Kamala Harris won.
- 44:30Speaker 4: Even if it's not overwhelming. If she wins, she wins,
- 44:33Speaker 4: and I recognize Joe Biden as the President of the
- 44:36Speaker 4: United States today. If she wins by even a single
- 44:40Speaker 4: vote and that's where the country goes, and she's sworn
- 44:43Speaker 4: in as the next president, I'll recognize her as the president.
- 44:46Speaker 4: Then I'll pray for those folks who work in the
- 44:48Speaker 4: gas industry and the coal industry and those families who
- 44:52Speaker 4: go to the grocery store and are struggling to get
- 44:54Speaker 4: by because it's not going to get any easier, and
- 44:57Speaker 4: so I'll recognize her as the president. I'll do it
- 45:00Speaker 4: everything I can to try to see that she's successful.
- 45:03Speaker 4: But I don't think that's what's going to happen on
- 45:05Speaker 4: election Night?

- 47:44Speaker 3: true spirit of sportsmanship not merely about winning medals, about
- 47:47Speaker 3: being a part of a team, practicing and competing together.
- 47:49Speaker 3: The joy and fulfillment derived from these experiences are immeasurable.
- 47:52Speaker 3: As athletes find their confidence and so forth through the
- 47:55Speaker 3: share pursuit of Victory, West Virginia Enriched in collaboration with Honeyton,
- 47:58Speaker 3: invite you to witness the transformative power Special Olympics cy
- 48:01Speaker 3: of video highlighting Special Olympics at Facebook dot com, Slace
- 48:04Speaker 3: five ADWCCHS. Mike, before we move on, you did have
- 48:07Speaker 3: one comment that you told me during the break that
- 48:09Speaker 3: you wanted to make about deconsolidation and a pilot program.
- 48:12Speaker 4: Well, listen, I've asked, and you know, I serve in
- 48:14Speaker 4: the State Senate. I love serving there. I represent some
- 48:17Speaker 4: great people in Lincoln, Logan Boone, in the southern part
- 48:19Speaker 4: of Kanawa County. I've asked that my district be a
- 48:22Speaker 4: pilot program, and I can guarantee a pilot program for deconsolidation.
- 48:27Speaker 4: And if you let me have that pilot program, I
- 48:30Speaker 4: can guarantee you, after a period of time, my schools
- 48:33Speaker 4: will far outperform those consolidated schools. I guarantee you.
- 48:37Speaker 3: Tech says, okay, but what is Senator Stewart's plan as
- 48:39Speaker 3: a freshman state senator for legislation to reverse consolidation.
- 48:44Speaker 4: Well, I've already been in discussions on this, and so
- 48:48Speaker 4: we've you know, given I'm a freshman, I've already passed
- 48:51Speaker 4: some pretty big legislation, whether it's the vape shop legislation,
- 48:54Speaker 4: other big pieces of legislation I've taken on. I'm not
- 48:57Speaker 4: afraid of controversy, that's for sure. I'm sure you're lights
- 49:00Speaker 4: are lighting up over there with comments from folks. But
- 49:03Speaker 4: guess what, I don't care, because this is the right
- 49:06Speaker 4: thing to talk about. We need deconsolidation, and I'll be
- 49:09Speaker 4: working on that.
- 49:10Speaker 3: Deck, says guess your guest is against the closing to
- 49:12Speaker 3: local schools. However, he is probably a supporter of the
- 49:15Speaker 3: Hope Scholarship, which allows parents to place their children in
- 49:17Speaker 3: charter schools, which basically defunds the public schools and makes
- 49:20Speaker 3: the local boards make these decisions.
- 49:23Speaker 4: Why was there a need for any of this? Why
- 49:24Speaker 4: because of these consolidated schools taking kids out of communities.
- 49:28Speaker 4: Of course, I support the Hope Scholarship, and homeschooling is soaring.
- 49:32Speaker 4: It has everything to do with kids being forced to
- 49:35Speaker 4: go way outside their communities to consolidated schools.
- 49:39Speaker 6: All right.
- 49:39Speaker 3: I want to ask about the Guardian caps then, and
- 49:43Speaker 3: you brought some props in this morning. I'll post those
- 49:45Speaker 3: pictures a little bit later on. Following the death of
- 49:48Speaker 3: young Cohen Craddock, which, by the way, folks, it's pronounced
- 49:51Speaker 3: Craddock because it's Southern hous Virginia, it's not Cradock. So
- 49:55Speaker 3: let's talk about you why you felt the need to
- 49:59Speaker 3: get in Guardian cap thing.
- 50:01Speaker 4: Well, listen, the time has come and the evolution of
- 50:04Speaker 4: the sport is ongoing. In fact, to a Tounguevaloa who
- 50:08Speaker 4: plays for the Miami.
- 50:09Speaker 6: And you said it, well, it's tough.
- 50:11Speaker 19: I was.
- 50:11Speaker 4: I was debating whether I was going to But but
- 50:14Speaker 4: the challenge here is we see it every single week.
- 50:17Speaker 4: We're losing players. I think the Mountaineers last weekend lost
- 50:20Speaker 4: some players as a result of head trauma. We need
- 50:23Speaker 4: to be protecting our youngsters. Those people playing midget league,
- 50:27Speaker 4: those people play in middle school, those people play in
- 50:29Speaker 4: high school. I brought you in one of these Guardian
- 50:32Speaker 4: caps for you to see. It's amazing how light it is.
- 50:35Speaker 4: In the NFL studies there, they're without question. You can't
- 50:39Speaker 4: debate the science. The science is very very clear. We're
- 50:43Speaker 4: not going to be proposing I'm not going to be
- 50:45Speaker 4: proposing a bill that just rewards Guardian Cap. With the
- 50:48Speaker 4: big win in West Virginia, I'm actually working with Javier
- 50:51Speaker 4: Cardenas and other doctors at WVU and Marshall. We're working with.
- 50:56Speaker 4: We're going to be working with people in the helmet industry.
- 50:59Speaker 4: We're going to be working with those folks who fit
- 51:01Speaker 4: the helmets for Mountaineer, for WVU, and for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 51:05Speaker 4: We're going to craft a bill that is a smart
- 51:08Speaker 4: bill to lead this country where it needs to go
- 51:11Speaker 4: in terms of the transition of the sport. Listen, when
- 51:14Speaker 4: football started, there weren't helmets at all, and then we
- 51:17Speaker 4: went to leather helmets and so on and so forth.
- 51:19Speaker 4: This is a natural transition. And when you see that
- 51:22Speaker 4: head protection over there, it's so simple, so easy, so cheap.
- 51:27Speaker 4: Why wouldn't we do it?
- 51:28Speaker 6: What age kids would you like to see where these things?
- 51:30Speaker 4: Well, I think we have to talk about anything. It's
- 51:32Speaker 4: high school and younger. Certainly for high school kids that
- 51:35Speaker 4: ought to be mandatory in games, but I'll say this
- 51:38Speaker 4: for midget leg and middle schoolers, I'd like to see
- 51:41Speaker 4: it mandatory anytime there's any sort of contact. I tell you,
- 51:45Speaker 4: the discussions aren't great. And this bill we're going to
- 51:48Speaker 4: introduce isn't going to just be about a piece of
- 51:52Speaker 4: a piece of rap for your helmet. It's going to
- 51:55Speaker 4: be about trainers. It's going to be about the assistance
- 51:58Speaker 4: at the field. It's going to be about teaching young
- 52:01Speaker 4: people how to tackle. But it's not just about football.
- 52:03Speaker 4: It's about soccer, it's about volleyball. We need to re
- 52:07Speaker 4: examine here in West Virginia, whatever we can do to
- 52:10Speaker 4: protect our kids from head trauma. The long term effects
- 52:13Speaker 4: are absolute, they are consequential. I think moms and dads
- 52:17Speaker 4: really want this protection, and I'm hearing from them from
- 52:20Speaker 4: all across West Virginia.
- 52:21Speaker 3: All Right, now, I'm gonna have you on the week
- 52:23Speaker 3: of the election to go back and talk about Trump.
- 52:26Speaker 6: Vie Harris.
- 52:26Speaker 3: If you're wrong you say it's gonna be a Trump landslide,
- 52:29Speaker 3: I want to have you on.
- 52:30Speaker 6: I'm not saying it's not gonna be on my.
- 52:32Speaker 4: First Jobby McDonald's. Anybody who can serve fries like that
- 52:35Speaker 4: should get our vote.
- 52:36Speaker 3: What was your McDonald's open? Because that one was closed?
- 52:38Speaker 3: All right, we gotta go. Senator Mike Stewart, thank you
- 52:41Speaker 3: so much. If you haven't yet gotten your tickets for
