- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13We are kicking off a new series with
- 0:15this episode, Gentle Witnesses, sharing your faith at
- 0:19work in a way that actually makes sense.
- 0:26I want to start with a story from
- 0:28when I was in middle school.
- 0:30I was a burgeoning theological mind, and I
- 0:34was concerned about the masses of people in
- 0:37the world who did not know theological truths.
- 0:40And so I went into Microsoft Paint, and
- 0:43I designed a tract, a little handout that
- 0:47explains the good news.
- 0:48And I painted the fires of hell at
- 0:50the bottom of the front cover of the
- 0:52tract and then printed it out and cut
- 0:54it up and made a bunch of copies
- 0:55and stapled them together and went to the
- 0:57local shopping mall and handed them out.
- 1:00This is a true story, and I still
- 1:03remember the question on the front of the
- 1:07tract was, if you died tonight, are you
- 1:10100% sure you would go to heaven?
- 1:12And I remember there was this like 16
- 1:14-year-old guy, he picked one up, kept
- 1:16walking, and then he shouted back over his
- 1:17shoulder, probably not.
- 1:20And in hindsight, there's so many things about
- 1:23middle school, Chris, easily that I notice.
- 1:26One is my earnestness, my desire for people
- 1:30to know the Lord, for people to know
- 1:32Jesus.
- 1:33That's a good thing.
- 1:34That's a good desire.
- 1:35The other is a very kind of maybe
- 1:40non-relational, more transactional way of interacting, right?
- 1:43Like here's a tract just handing it out
- 1:45of a shoebox, not trying to get to
- 1:46know people, not trying to listen to people,
- 1:48and then okay, some methodological things there.
- 1:51And then also a certain way of framing
- 1:53what is the good news that we have
- 1:54to share that was very focused on hell,
- 1:57and that also was focused on what happens
- 1:58when you die, right?
- 1:59Are you 100% sure that you would
- 2:01go to heaven when you die?
- 2:02So kind of focus not on life here
- 2:04and now, but life far in the future.
- 2:07And I don't know what your story of
- 2:09following Jesus is, or maybe you're even just
- 2:11still exploring what it means to follow Jesus.
- 2:14But I know a lot of people who
- 2:16share that first quality.
- 2:18They have a genuine desire to share what
- 2:21they've experienced with Jesus with other people because
- 2:24it's been life-changing for them, because it's
- 2:25been a joyful, beautiful thing for them.
- 2:28But they're concerned about the other two things.
- 2:32They're concerned about like a bad approach, a
- 2:33bad methodology that's somehow awkward or bad or
- 2:36transactional or not relational.
- 2:39And then they're also concerned about the second
- 2:40thing, like, are we framing the good news
- 2:42in a way that's kind of one-dimensional
- 2:44or manipulative even, or just focused on the
- 2:48wrong things?
- 2:49And so a lot of people I know,
- 2:51they just end up kind of stymied, just
- 2:53kind of stuck in the mud.
- 2:55Like, I know I want to share my
- 2:56faith.
- 2:57I know there's good news to share, but
- 2:59how the heck are you supposed to do
- 3:00it in a way that makes any kind
- 3:02of social sense at all?
- 3:04Is there even a good way to do
- 3:05it?
- 3:05I have some friends who have basically given
- 3:07up on evangelism, they've had conversations with me.
- 3:09And if you guys are listening to this
- 3:10podcast episode, you know who you are, friends
- 3:12of mine.
- 3:13But they're just like, look, I just don't
- 3:15want to do it anymore.
- 3:16It just doesn't make any emotional sense to
- 3:18me.
- 3:18I don't have it in me anymore to
- 3:20try and have spiritual conversations with people who
- 3:22don't believe in Jesus, about Jesus.
- 3:26So this is an immediately emotional topic, the
- 3:31topic of how do we share our good
- 3:32news.
- 3:33And in this bigger podcast of finding God
- 3:35at work, we want to specifically talk about
- 3:37how do you do this in the workplace,
- 3:39which comes with its own set of baggage,
- 3:41right?
- 3:41You're dealing with people that you have long
- 3:43-term relationships with, people you have conversations of
- 3:48coworkers or how you're going to be perceived.
- 3:51This is a high stakes thing to think
- 3:53about what does it mean to be open
- 3:54with your faith and even to try and
- 3:56find ways to share the good news and
- 3:58to do that in a way that makes
- 4:01sense.
- 4:02And when I say makes sense, I mean
- 4:03that a couple of different ways.
- 4:04One is that it makes social sense, that
- 4:06it is relational, that it can be contextualized
- 4:09within friendships and work relationships in an appropriate
- 4:12way, in a way that doesn't have to
- 4:14feel super awkward or strange or somehow in
- 4:18any way manipulative, certainly not, but also even
- 4:20like forced, like it doesn't have to be
- 4:22forced, it can actually be a kind of
- 4:23organic, sensible, social thing.
- 4:28The other thing about how to share your
- 4:29faith, how to share the good news in
- 4:31a way that actually makes sense is that
- 4:33the good news itself actually makes sense.
- 4:35It helps us make sense of life.
- 4:38And so that's sort of more that like
- 4:39intellectual side of what it means to share
- 4:41our faith and just helping people discern what
- 4:44do I really believe and why and what
- 4:45kind of life am I living and what
- 4:47kind of person am I becoming and presenting
- 4:50Jesus and His way, His path as a
- 4:53compelling answer to our questions about life, as
- 4:56a compelling answer to our question about what
- 4:58it means to be a good person, as
- 5:00a compelling answer to the problem of pain
- 5:02and suffering that we all experience, that Jesus
- 5:04can actually help us navigate the difficulties of
- 5:08life and can guide us into His way
- 5:10of life, a way of life that makes
- 5:12deep, beautiful sense.
- 5:15So those are the two different ways that
- 5:17I mean we can share the good news
- 5:19in a way that actually makes sense.
- 5:21I'm really excited about this series because I
- 5:24have been working on how to share the
- 5:26good news in a way that makes sense
- 5:27for a long time and I've improved a
- 5:29lot on Middle School Chris's approach, but I'm
- 5:31still learning.
- 5:32And so I'm just excited to dig into
- 5:34some of the authors that I'm reading and
- 5:36share some of the experiences that I'm having
- 5:38with both Christian and non-Christian friends.
- 5:41And hopefully just share something that's practical, something
- 5:43that can help you grow in confidence in
- 5:46terms of how you could share the good
- 5:47news in your workplace with your friends, regardless
- 5:50of their religious background.
- 5:52So just to give you kind of an
- 5:53outline of the series, we're going to spend
- 5:54the first few episodes kind of talking about
- 5:57like what is the good news, because it's
- 5:59kind of hard to share that if you
- 6:00don't know what it is or you haven't
- 6:02experienced it for yourself.
- 6:03So we'll be focusing on that.
- 6:04What is the gospel?
- 6:05What does it mean to be saved?
- 6:07How do we understand salvation?
- 6:09Why would we want to share this with
- 6:10anybody?
- 6:10Are we supposed to share it with anybody?
- 6:12Is there actually any command in the New
- 6:14Testament to share the good news with other
- 6:15people?
- 6:16It might be surprising that there's a sense
- 6:18in which the answer is no, but that
- 6:19doesn't mean it's not good to share.
- 6:22So we'll be talking about just what is
- 6:24the good news and then we'll be talking
- 6:25about that methodology.
- 6:27What are relational ways to share the good
- 6:30news?
- 6:30How do we do that in a way
- 6:33that works and that does build trust and
- 6:35that is rooted in a relationship?
- 6:38And then finally, some more theological reflections.
- 6:41So even though we're starting with what is
- 6:42the good news, we'll end actually with some
- 6:45theological reflections as well about how does the
- 6:47good news relate to bigger questions like the
- 6:49idea of mission more broadly than just verbal
- 6:54conversations, like how does it relate to our
- 6:57workplace in terms of the meaning of the
- 6:59work we're doing every day?
- 7:00Like, you know, how does that matter?
- 7:03And so we'll kind of be doing almost
- 7:04like a social theory of evangelism with the
- 7:07ending part of the podcast.
- 7:09So it's going to be a bit of
- 7:10a longer series to try and fit those
- 7:11three phases in.
- 7:12What is the good news?
- 7:14How do we share the good news?
- 7:15And then what are the social implications of
- 7:17the good news?
- 7:18How does it fit into a bigger picture
- 7:19of life with God on mission?
- 7:21And we're going to try and keep it
- 7:23practical by always tying it back to the
- 7:24workplace context, but just really looking forward to
- 7:28it.
- 7:28We're going to dig into the actual topics,
- 7:31starting with our next episode.
- 7:31But I just want to end this introduction
- 7:33episode by praying a prayer from the Book
- 7:35of Common Prayer.
- 7:37And this is a prayer for mission, a
- 7:40prayer for evangelism, for sharing the good news.
- 7:43And I'm also going to read a verse
- 7:44from the Lord Jesus from chapter 13 of
- 7:48the Gospel of Luke, one of his metaphors
- 7:50of the kingdom of God.
- 7:53Jesus said, to what shall I compare the
- 7:55kingdom of God?
- 7:56It is like leaven that a woman took
- 7:58and hid in three measures of flour until
- 8:01it was all leavened.
- 8:05Almighty God, our Savior, you desire that none
- 8:07should perish.
- 8:08And you have taught us through your son
- 8:10that there is great joy in heaven over
- 8:12every sinner who repents.
- 8:14Grant that our hearts may ache for a
- 8:16lost and broken world.
- 8:18May your Holy Spirit work through our words,
- 8:20deeds and prayers, that the lost may be
- 8:23found and the dead made alive and that
- 8:27all your redeemed may rejoice around your throne,
- 8:31through Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 8:34Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 8:36do our work with you.
- 8:43Thanks for listening.
