- 0:09Speaker 1: Metater Podcast. Welcome to me Eater Radio Live. It's eleven
- 0:29Speaker 1: a m. Mountain time. Phil's giggling again because I missed
- 0:33Speaker 1: the exact timing of this intro, but oh well, we'll
- 0:35Speaker 1: keep on going. Eleven am Mountain time. That's eight pm
- 0:39Speaker 1: for our friends in Latvia. What up, Linda, gasparskuts bars
- 0:43Speaker 1: everybody else. It's Thursday, August twenty eighth, and we're live
- 0:47Speaker 1: from me Eater headquarters in a fall like Bozeman, Montana.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'm your host, Yannis ptelis joined today by Randall Big,
- 0:56Speaker 1: Randy Williams, and Brody of Care Are you in the
- 1:00Speaker 1: Henderson's Henderson I was a tongue twister. Like I said.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It feels a lot like fall and that has me
- 1:06Speaker 1: fired up. The aspens are showing a sprinkling of yellow leaves.
- 1:10Speaker 1: The high today is only sixty five degrees. I heard
- 1:13Speaker 1: a bugle last night on Tana's archery season opens in
- 1:17Speaker 1: nine days and my broadheads are flying.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Oh true, oh my.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Today on the show, we'll hear about my and Brody's
- 1:26Speaker 1: recent trip to Alaska. An audio project called Hide hunters,
- 1:30Speaker 1: our favorite sounds from the outdoors, and a new trail camera.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Photo contest Rich Frohning is phoning in to tell us
- 1:38Speaker 1: about the hardest moment in CrossFit competition. And finally, we'll
- 1:43Speaker 1: chat with me eater guest star Parker Hall about trapping
- 1:47Speaker 1: feral pigs in Florida to save sea turtles. Boys. Does
- 1:53Speaker 1: it feel like fall to you too?
- 1:55Speaker 3: It does? But you know, you know summer is coming back.
- 2:00Speaker 4: I know.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I checked the weather today after we because this rain
- 2:03Speaker 1: was unexpected to me at least, I had not been
- 2:06Speaker 1: checking the weather. And then yesterday and today it's all
- 2:08Speaker 1: like coolny, great weather.
- 2:11Speaker 3: For running in I've been enjoying that.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I haven't done any running.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I'm just hoping that this puts an end to fire season.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't check that this morning. Either. Do you
- 2:19Speaker 1: know if any of the fires were extinguished from rain?
- 2:23Speaker 2: No idea, but thinking hopeful thoughts.
- 2:26Speaker 1: But are you guys jack too. It's not quite September,
- 2:29Speaker 1: but we're almost there. Oh yeah, man, it's like it's here.
- 2:32Speaker 1: It's on Monday is.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Grouse Opener will be out there and that's like the
- 2:38Speaker 3: official start.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I'm not quite there yet. I'm not quite.
- 2:43Speaker 1: You're not feeling it.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Well, I'm excited, but I don't feel like it's at
- 2:48Speaker 2: the doorstep quite yet. We've got a little travel up
- 2:50Speaker 2: ahead of us, and.
- 2:52Speaker 3: His broadheads aren't flying true like yours.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Well, my broadheads are still hanging on the rack at
- 2:58Speaker 2: a store somewhere because I'm just waiting to burn some powder.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Uh huh. I know. See, that's the thing you got.
- 3:03Speaker 1: If you want to really get fired up at the
- 3:04Speaker 1: end of August, you kind of got to be an
- 3:06Speaker 1: upland hunter like Brody or an arch tree hunter. Now
- 3:09Speaker 1: you mentioned we're doing some traveling, we might as well
- 3:10Speaker 1: get this out of the way. Randall and I are
- 3:12Speaker 1: going to be in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday. Do you
- 3:16Speaker 1: have the exact location? Handy?
- 3:19Speaker 5: I do not.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Well, while he's Randall's looking that up. We're doing the
- 3:22Speaker 1: tailgate tour again and Randall and I going to be
- 3:25Speaker 1: there for the Ohio State in Texas, Yes game on Saturday,
- 3:32Speaker 1: hanging out. So if you're in the area, go to
- 3:36Speaker 1: the website. I'm sure you can get all the DCE
- 3:38Speaker 1: there on where to find us. Randall might have it
- 3:40Speaker 1: pulled up there.
- 3:41Speaker 2: We will be at the Dublin Market at Bridge Park.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Okay, Dublin Market at Bridge Park. It's gonna be early
- 3:48Speaker 1: because the game starts at eleven, so.
- 3:50Speaker 2: It'll start at noon. I'm sorry, We're gonna start at
- 3:53Speaker 2: nine am.
- 3:54Speaker 1: At nine am kick off, so you've probably roughly got
- 3:56Speaker 1: two hours to come and see us. Nine to eleven
- 3:59Speaker 1: Saturday morning. Come and hang out, tell me hunt story,
- 4:03Speaker 1: take a picture, whatever you want to do. We'd love
- 4:05Speaker 1: to see you.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Does it say where I'm going to be on where
- 4:07Speaker 3: ours is? On the twenty seventh TBD on your local.
- 4:11Speaker 3: We'll have to come back to that.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll revisit that.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Uh, Brody, we got back. What has it been now?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Has it been a week or two? Two too odd
- 4:21Speaker 1: time wise? Yeah, we were at fish Shack, Renella's fish
- 4:26Speaker 1: Shack on Prince of Wales Island. Randell, you've been there
- 4:30Speaker 1: for Bear Hunt, I have, Brody, you've been there a
- 4:33Speaker 1: whole bunch with your family. This is the first time
- 4:34Speaker 1: I took my family there. My biggest worry going into
- 4:38Speaker 1: this one was like how my kids, my girls were
- 4:41Speaker 1: going to deal with Steve.
- 4:47Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 4:48Speaker 1: But they've been around him enough, they've kind of grown
- 4:50Speaker 1: up with him that they kind of know what to
- 4:52Speaker 1: expect and they get my I coach them on how
- 4:56Speaker 1: to deal with that too, you know, and so that's
- 4:59Speaker 1: not too big deal because they've been around him. But No,
- 5:01Speaker 1: the Southeast Alaska's sort of constant rain, the constant fifty
- 5:08Speaker 1: five degree temperature that's really not warm, not cold, but
- 5:13Speaker 1: you know, it's like if you're wet in that those
- 5:16Speaker 1: tempts it can it can be uncomfortable.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and you're always wet even when it's not raining totally.
- 5:21Speaker 1: The living conditions up there, it's not unsanitary or anything,
- 5:26Speaker 1: but it's very sparse, well, you know, it's it's it
- 5:29Speaker 1: is a shack.
- 5:29Speaker 2: When I was up there, I couldn't get all of
- 5:31Speaker 2: the mink shit off my bed that I was sleeping in.
- 5:34Speaker 2: That's the danger of most of the minkshit. But I
- 5:37Speaker 2: couldn't get all of it.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Yeah, because you were probably the first one there for
- 5:40Speaker 3: the season, so you had to deal with all that.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Luckily we were there after all that had been taken.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Yeah, each consecutive group just scrapes off a little more minkshit,
- 5:48Speaker 1: and by the time you're the last group like us,
- 5:50Speaker 1: no more minkshit.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yep.
- 5:52Speaker 1: But we last group. Man, I would rather be the
- 5:55Speaker 1: first group. I've only done that like one, Maybe I
- 5:57Speaker 1: would rather be a middle group. Oh, you're right, yeah.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Uh.
- 6:01Speaker 1: The reason we're saying that like middle, like there's a
- 6:03Speaker 1: there's actually four owners of the fish shack, and so
- 6:06Speaker 1: there's a period of probably a span of maybe close
- 6:09Speaker 1: to two months roughly, yeah, six weeks, and the first
- 6:13Speaker 1: group comes. You got to do the job of opening
- 6:15Speaker 1: the place up. But then there's like group two, three,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and four who like get to just roll in, do
- 6:22Speaker 1: their thing and leave. Now there's work to be done
- 6:25Speaker 1: for every group, but the opening and then the shutting
- 6:28Speaker 1: the place down is like it takes a day. It
- 6:30Speaker 1: took us a day to shut the place down.
- 6:32Speaker 2: On our pulling motors off boats and oh it's back
- 6:35Speaker 2: getting the water lines all cleared out.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yeah. But to finish my original thought here, as I
- 6:43Speaker 1: was worried about my girls and how they were going
- 6:45Speaker 1: to do there. My wife, I know she's gonna be fine,
- 6:47Speaker 1: no big deal. Uh, they like excelled exceeded expectations. Not
- 6:52Speaker 1: only did they never once uh like even kind of
- 6:56Speaker 1: talk about the weather. Like I don't think they talked
- 6:58Speaker 1: about the rain, the adults are bitching about the rain,
- 7:01Speaker 1: but the kids like, don't bring it up. They're just
- 7:03Speaker 1: like whatever, man, we put our slickers on and we're going.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And that's my.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Bigby put them on and just run around wet.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Yeah, and bro my girls, I'm like, you girls are
- 7:12Speaker 1: gonna learn a lesson Brod. He's like I told you,
- 7:17Speaker 1: Brody gets after his kids when they're making mistakes like
- 7:20Speaker 1: run around without raincoats. But anyways, the kids excelled. They
- 7:23Speaker 1: didn't give a shit about the rain. And that water
- 7:26Speaker 1: is roughly.
- 7:27Speaker 3: What in the fifties.
- 7:29Speaker 1: In the fifties, those kids swim every single day of
- 7:32Speaker 1: our trip. The water would come in, the tide would
- 7:35Speaker 1: get high, and they would be in the cove just
- 7:37Speaker 1: splashing around like they were at the beach in North Carolina.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Ya couldn't care, Matt rene mad He runs around in
- 7:44Speaker 3: shorts and crocs, like, no rain gear. And the kid's
- 7:48Speaker 3: impervious to the weather. Yeah, it's like it doesn't affect him.
- 7:54Speaker 1: My oldest received this prestigious Cock of the Cove award,
- 7:57Speaker 1: Stephen Renela. To put this in perspective, we actually have
- 8:03Speaker 1: to plan when we're gonna eat dinner. The rest of
- 8:07Speaker 1: us without Steve knowing, because if you eat dinner, we
- 8:11Speaker 1: were eating dinner kind of late. I felt like a
- 8:13Speaker 1: couple of nights, and I was like, man, let's eat
- 8:15Speaker 1: a little bit earlier. And yeah, that chef Andy Rajalowski's like, yeah, sure,
- 8:19Speaker 1: we can eat it earlier. But and I didn't really
- 8:23Speaker 1: get the butt. I guess I wasn't listening what happens
- 8:26Speaker 1: the next night we eat earlier, we're done at like seven,
- 8:29Speaker 1: there's like ninety minutes maybe two hours of kind of
- 8:32Speaker 1: some light left. Well, everybody else wants to like play
- 8:35Speaker 1: banana Grams and have another beer. Steven Arnella is like
- 8:39Speaker 1: looking out the window and he's like, well.
- 8:40Speaker 6: We got plenty of time to dig a hole. We're
- 8:43Speaker 6: gonna carry some rocks. We're gonna chain one of the
- 8:46Speaker 6: big rocks in the hole. They we're gonna cover up
- 8:48Speaker 6: the hole and chain it to my new floating dock.
- 8:51Speaker 6: And everybody's kind of looking around like he's like, who's
- 8:54Speaker 6: with me?
- 8:54Speaker 1: No one raises a hand. So that's the problem with
- 8:57Speaker 1: eating too early. So after that we were really person
- 9:01Speaker 1: that when we finished eating, there would not be quite
- 9:04Speaker 1: enough time to get another chore done. It could just
- 9:06Speaker 1: be a little bit of relaxation and time for better.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that was like we had never done the eating
- 9:13Speaker 3: early before.
- 9:15Speaker 1: You never tried it.
- 9:17Speaker 3: No, it's always like you eat and go to bed,
- 9:20Speaker 3: which like you gotta you get you know, it's a
- 9:22Speaker 3: long day, but it doesn't leave any time for you.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Just eat, go to bed.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Okay, I've said this to let you all know that
- 9:31Speaker 1: when you're at Reneul's fish shack, and I'd like to
- 9:33Speaker 1: know if you had the similar experience. But there's work
- 9:36Speaker 1: to be done. There's like uh shack improvement projects that
- 9:39Speaker 1: are ongoing. There's just general upkeep of engines and like
- 9:44Speaker 1: you name it. And then there's the daily stuff just
- 9:46Speaker 1: to keep yourself alive, cooking and eating and cleaning up
- 9:49Speaker 1: after yourself and all that stuff. Well, the cock of
- 9:52Speaker 1: the cove gets the award when like you're always Johnny
- 9:56Speaker 1: on the spot. You're raising your hand when at like
- 9:59Speaker 1: six pm, no one else wants to go pull shrimp pots.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Steve's like we're going to pull shrimp pots? Who wants
- 10:04Speaker 1: to go? You raise your hand or dinner's over. Everybody
- 10:08Speaker 1: else is chilling, rubbing their bellies, adjusting their belts. There's
- 10:11Speaker 1: a lot of dirty dishes. You get up and start
- 10:13Speaker 1: doing the dishes, right, that sort of stuff. Oh, you
- 10:16Speaker 1: got to make another run back from the boats to
- 10:18Speaker 1: get more bait. I'll go run back to get more bait. Right. Well,
- 10:23Speaker 1: my daughter very proud of her. She chipped in and
- 10:26Speaker 1: was crushing it, and Steve awarded her Cock of the Cove.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Well, does that entitle her to any sort of liberties
- 10:35Speaker 2: the next time around or diminished?
- 10:37Speaker 3: No, your slate is clear.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, pat yourself on the back and move on.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Hayde, my kid, Hayden was awarded Chief filet Officer.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Oh that's a prestigious honor.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Yeah, he was after it this.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah, Randon, when you were there, did you feel like
- 10:55Speaker 1: you worked your ass off?
- 10:58Speaker 2: Not really.
- 10:59Speaker 7: Uh.
- 11:00Speaker 2: We didn't do a ton of projects because we were
- 11:03Speaker 2: filming and so the focus was on like getting stuff done.
- 11:09Speaker 1: It's interesting because usually even when I've been up there
- 11:11Speaker 1: in the past filming, Steve will be like, Okay, we
- 11:13Speaker 1: did eight hours of film, and now let's do four
- 11:15Speaker 1: hours of may La.
- 11:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Well, we were like we were a little under the
- 11:20Speaker 2: gun until I killed my bear and then it was
- 11:23Speaker 2: like because we had we had two bear tags to fill.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And so the first two, you know, we flew in,
- 11:30Speaker 2: couldn't hunt, and we had a day where we didn't
- 11:35Speaker 2: Steve and I chased a couple didn't get an opportunity.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Then we had a day where it just rained all
- 11:40Speaker 2: night and all day and bears didn't come out. Steve
- 11:43Speaker 2: and I sat in the rain. So at that point
- 11:45Speaker 2: there was a little bit of anxiety. But when I
- 11:48Speaker 2: was up there, I I just sort of decided that
- 11:51Speaker 2: I was going to fill the generator, which brought me
- 11:55Speaker 2: back to my days working in Alaska, just filling fuel
- 11:59Speaker 2: cans and pouring them and things, and that was I
- 12:03Speaker 2: felt like that was a solid contribution.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Oh, you got to keep the Jenny running.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Nothing worse when Yeah, we had narrator problems this year.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, we had all kinds of mechanical problems.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Anything else? Do you want to mention about our great trip?
- 12:19Speaker 8: No?
- 12:19Speaker 3: I mean Seth and I kind of talked fishing up
- 12:21Speaker 3: there last was it last week?
- 12:24Speaker 1: So he covered off on this, covered off on how
- 12:28Speaker 1: Seth kept taking out Renel's kids and his Renel's kids
- 12:31Speaker 1: would catch giants.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I let people know if you want to
- 12:35Speaker 3: get a big halbit, you get in cessed boat.
- 12:37Speaker 1: That's right. Yeah, it's pretty funny. Did you let people
- 12:41Speaker 1: know that Steve missed the gaff shot or not the
- 12:45Speaker 1: gaf shot the harpoon shot on your wife's big fish.
- 12:48Speaker 3: I can't remember if we talked about that. I think
- 12:50Speaker 3: we may have, and he didn't miss it, the helbit
- 12:53Speaker 3: dodged the harpoon.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah, according to I don't think he's come forward with
- 12:57Speaker 1: his story yet. He should discuss it on on a
- 13:00Speaker 1: future Mediator podcast episode. But I once was just ridden
- 13:07Speaker 1: to hell. I was there about a why am I
- 13:11Speaker 1: missing that word? A harpoon throat? I had never done it.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I didn't realize. I thought it was kind of like
- 13:17Speaker 1: a haia, you know, you just like know it. No,
- 13:19Speaker 1: you gotta put it in there, and you gotta let
- 13:23Speaker 1: him eat, you know.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I got to harpoon the big one that Steve caught,
- 13:28Speaker 2: and it was one of my favorite things ever done
- 13:30Speaker 2: in my life because I'm a big moby dick guy.
- 13:32Speaker 8: Hmmm.
- 13:33Speaker 2: And also when I was guiding up there, like netting
- 13:37Speaker 2: a big king is like a pretty intense situation, you know,
- 13:40Speaker 2: like because the one end of the fish is going
- 13:43Speaker 2: to be hanging out of the net and if it's
- 13:44Speaker 2: the if it's not the ass end, that thing's going
- 13:46Speaker 2: to swim away. So like brought me back again to
- 13:49Speaker 2: the pressure of getting that fish in the boat. But
- 13:52Speaker 2: a harpoon. Oh, it's just something very romantic about it.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I got it, nailed.
- 14:00Speaker 2: It, but the film crew was beachcombing at the time,
- 14:04Speaker 2: so it didn't make it into the episode. My crowning achievement. Yeah,
- 14:08Speaker 2: I know, man, but they found something cool on the beach.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I think I don't know what.
- 14:12Speaker 1: They say, Randall, if it didn't happen on camera, it
- 14:15Speaker 1: didn't happen. Yes, Carrie's fish somehow got wrapped up in
- 14:21Speaker 1: the anchor line. Well, I mean it's like they kind
- 14:24Speaker 1: of got that freed up. She was but she wasn't
- 14:27Speaker 1: even in the boat with Steve. No, everything was cool,
- 14:31Speaker 1: Oh it was everything was cool. The halbit was coming up,
- 14:35Speaker 1: here comes Steve jumps in their boat and that's when
- 14:39Speaker 1: chaos ensued. You're kidding.
- 14:41Speaker 4: He was always the common denominator.
- 14:44Speaker 2: That's great.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Why did he feel like he needed to jump in
- 14:47Speaker 1: the boat.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Because he really wanted to carry to get that thing.
- 14:49Speaker 3: It wasn't like you're doing it I don't think it
- 14:52Speaker 3: was like, oh, you guys are doing something wrong. He
- 14:54Speaker 3: wanted her to get sure sure, and he wanted it
- 14:57Speaker 3: too much.
- 14:57Speaker 1: And it'll help if I'm in the boat with you.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Yeah, look man, like it's fun to like point the finger,
- 15:04Speaker 3: but shit goes wrong with those big ones.
- 15:07Speaker 1: All extremely fun. Yeah. No, we lost more big ones
- 15:11Speaker 1: that week than we then we landed percent, especially when
- 15:16Speaker 1: you got like kids like that are around ten years
- 15:19Speaker 1: old plus or minus whatever a couple three years, and
- 15:23Speaker 1: like you're kind of helping hold Rod real Rod, and
- 15:26Speaker 1: you're like, I can feel the the you know, levity
- 15:29Speaker 1: is a situation.
- 15:30Speaker 2: On that run, the last fish you want to lose.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and you're just like, Maddie, do the best you can, buddy.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Speaking of hides, bear hides, you got one when you're
- 15:43Speaker 1: up there, But uh, you have a project about some
- 15:46Speaker 1: hides you're working on.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yes, Yes, The next The next edition of Meat Eater's
- 15:51Speaker 2: American History is available for pre order right now wherever
- 15:54Speaker 2: you get your audio books. This is volume three Mediator's
- 15:58Speaker 2: American History, The Hide Hunters eight teen sixty five to
- 16:01Speaker 2: eighteen eighty three, where we dive into the industrial scale
- 16:06Speaker 2: slaughter of the American Buffalo, as Steve likes to say,
- 16:09Speaker 2: in the period following the Civil War. It will be
- 16:12Speaker 2: released officially on October fourteenth, So if you pre order
- 16:17Speaker 2: it now, it'll just be on your phone on October fourteenth,
- 16:20Speaker 2: and you can give it a listen on your drive
- 16:22Speaker 2: to hunting camp.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Or can you give me a little snippet of, like
- 16:26Speaker 1: one of your favorite stories from this.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Wo boy favorite stories.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Well, maybe a factoid that you found interesting.
- 16:35Speaker 2: So one of the more interesting things is there were
- 16:38Speaker 2: several stories about skunks. One was a guy named Skunk Johnson,
- 16:44Speaker 2: and these guys would big build what they called dugout shelters,
- 16:47Speaker 2: so they dig into the side of a stream bank.
- 16:50Speaker 2: And he was famous for having a really big, elaborate one.
- 16:54Speaker 2: And at one point he was surrounded by a group
- 16:57Speaker 2: of I believe comanches and he just was sort of
- 17:01Speaker 2: stuck in there. He holed up like it was a
- 17:03Speaker 2: siege and he survived only by eating skunks.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Wow.
- 17:08Speaker 2: And then there was another guy who was bitten by
- 17:12Speaker 2: a rabid skunk. They're like two or three guys bitten
- 17:14Speaker 2: by rabid skunks, one of which he crawled under a
- 17:20Speaker 2: watering station along the railroad tracks like those big towers,
- 17:23Speaker 2: you know, I guess to get out of the sun,
- 17:25Speaker 2: and he just died. He never left that place. He
- 17:27Speaker 2: crawled under it and died. And then another guy was
- 17:31Speaker 2: bitten by a bitten by a rabid skunk, and when
- 17:36Speaker 2: he felt one of the bouts of hydrophobia coming on,
- 17:39Speaker 2: he took some of the stryc nine that they used
- 17:41Speaker 2: to poison the hides for scavengers, and he went out
- 17:45Speaker 2: back and he swallowed a slug of strych nine and
- 17:48Speaker 2: killed himself.
- 17:49Speaker 3: That's interesting because I almost feel like you got to
- 17:51Speaker 3: try to get bit by a rabid skunk.
- 17:53Speaker 2: I mean, it makes you wonder how many there were
- 17:55Speaker 2: out there. Yeah, you know, fascinating stuff. And then there's
- 17:58Speaker 2: another guy that they think he got bit by a
- 18:00Speaker 2: rabbit skunk, but they don't know the skunk either scratched
- 18:03Speaker 2: him or bit him while he was sleeping. It got
- 18:05Speaker 2: on his face.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I mean, if you're sleeping in a dugout cave in
- 18:11Speaker 1: a stream bank along a stream, I mean, all those
- 18:14Speaker 1: critters run those streams and you're in there asleep, and
- 18:17Speaker 1: they just come in and share whatever, squat at it.
- 18:20Speaker 2: And I think that's my I think that's one of
- 18:23Speaker 2: my more fascinating discoveries from the research is just four
- 18:26Speaker 2: stories about skunks.
- 18:29Speaker 3: The thing I think is cool about is like debunking
- 18:32Speaker 3: the myth that these guys were like just blood thirsty,
- 18:37Speaker 3: like they're somehow doing it out of malice and when
- 18:40Speaker 3: actually it was like, yeah, it was like a good
- 18:43Speaker 3: job to have at the time.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Yeah, we get into that. I mean that in the
- 18:46Speaker 2: larger context is like after the Civil War, there's just
- 18:50Speaker 2: a lot of sort of restless veterans and displaced people,
- 18:54Speaker 2: especially if their hometown had been destroyed in the South
- 18:58Speaker 2: or whatever else, Like they come back from war and
- 19:00Speaker 2: life doesn't go back to normal for them, so they
- 19:03Speaker 2: head out west. And also, like the eighteen seventies, there
- 19:06Speaker 2: a time of a lot of economic upheaval and business
- 19:09Speaker 2: is failing and bankruptcies and stuff like that. So yeah,
- 19:12Speaker 2: like there's a resource that's free for the taking, and
- 19:14Speaker 2: it's understandable that these guys would go out there and
- 19:17Speaker 2: try to make a living, especially if they're kind of
- 19:19Speaker 2: predisposed to be like adventure seekers.
- 19:22Speaker 1: So I'm going to save listening to it. My daughter
- 19:25Speaker 1: and I are road trip into Wisconsin for the rifle season.
- 19:29Speaker 1: This year, and I'm going to save it for.
- 19:31Speaker 4: That perfect It'll get you through.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I'm going to make her listen.
- 19:35Speaker 2: To It'll get you through. I think six and a
- 19:36Speaker 2: half hours of your drive something like that. So well
- 19:40Speaker 2: that's like a third Yeah, maybe get four hundred miles
- 19:43Speaker 2: out of it, that'd be good, totally.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Let's see what else we got in our little chit
- 19:50Speaker 1: chat section here shooting with the families. Roddy and I
- 19:54Speaker 1: went out and did a little plinking, set up some gongs.
- 19:58Speaker 1: I need more stands for the go so we can
- 20:00Speaker 1: have more distances yep, and not have the same like
- 20:04Speaker 1: two gongs on one frame.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Yeah, get them dial in weird distances like you know,
- 20:09Speaker 3: in between distances. Yeah, we were just getting started. We
- 20:13Speaker 3: didn't get quite as far along with the competition thing
- 20:18Speaker 3: you're just getting I had a brand new rifle that
- 20:20Speaker 3: had never been shot.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Yeah, the guys should let me know. I'm just on
- 20:24Speaker 2: the other side of the mountain.
- 20:25Speaker 1: I know. Well, I mean I get I come back
- 20:28Speaker 1: from doing one of these, and then there's always like, oh,
- 20:30Speaker 1: I should have called Randall. I should have called you know, Mike,
- 20:33Speaker 1: because he's got a kid that also wants to shoot
- 20:35Speaker 1: but I will say, like we had just we were
- 20:39Speaker 1: at the max amount of like how many guns can
- 20:41Speaker 1: be going out at once. It's different if it's all adults.
- 20:44Speaker 3: You're trying to watch kids that are shooting, they can
- 20:46Speaker 3: get hectically.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't need to shoot. I can just help.
- 20:49Speaker 2: We can just be there to hear the bang.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Oh okay, well, then definitely we could use it.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Luckily, we had some quiet bangs going on, at least
- 20:56Speaker 3: until Johannis broke out the rifle with the brake on it.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Man, it's like, yeah, the brakes are tough these days,
- 21:03Speaker 1: but when you go to Canada, you gotta you gotta
- 21:05Speaker 1: shoot break. I will say, It's funny how I told
- 21:10Speaker 1: my girls going into it. I'm like, I would like
- 21:12Speaker 1: you guys to try to shoot about a box or
- 21:14Speaker 1: the whole box, you know, twenty rounds apiece, however you
- 21:17Speaker 1: want to do it. Well, they get through like ten,
- 21:19Speaker 1: they've hit every gong, and they're kind of like, eh,
- 21:23Speaker 1: you know, we've shot enough. I'm like, no, you haven't.
- 21:25Speaker 1: You know, we might get to do this one maybe
- 21:27Speaker 1: two times. But before we go on the youth hunt,
- 21:30Speaker 1: like we need to shoot a bunch and I'm like, okay,
- 21:33Speaker 1: let's do a little competition. You got to hit two hundred,
- 21:36Speaker 1: three hundred, four hundred and then come it and then
- 21:38Speaker 1: and then bring it back and we're gonna time you
- 21:41Speaker 1: you know, and every miss counts for fifteen seconds or whatever.
- 21:45Speaker 1: And as soon as that was down, all of a sudden,
- 21:47Speaker 1: everybody's like, all right, let me go, let me go,
- 21:49Speaker 1: let me go at it, let me go at it.
- 21:50Speaker 1: And then they each got another whatever that was six shots,
- 21:53Speaker 1: five shots, yeah, quickly, And uh, it's really good because
- 21:57Speaker 1: that little bit of stress of that competition tition, that
- 22:02Speaker 1: is what it's going to feel like when there's a
- 22:04Speaker 1: buck and you have limited amount of time and there's
- 22:08Speaker 1: all of a sudden there's stress. Stress in the situation,
- 22:10Speaker 1: self induced usually when you're out hunting, right, but like,
- 22:13Speaker 1: there is that stress, but it's you can you can
- 22:16Speaker 1: mimic that by doing a little bit of a competition.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I think it's really good for any shooter. You know,
- 22:21Speaker 1: kids get a lot out of it, but that's great
- 22:23Speaker 1: for any shooter. Yeah, I got other stuff I'd love
- 22:28Speaker 1: to tell you guys about. All Right, one last thing,
- 22:30Speaker 1: I promise Phil Philip's already like this is gonna be
- 22:32Speaker 1: the longest episcon checking on the longest episode.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Jesus the chat just complaining that Giannis won't shut the
- 22:39Speaker 4: hell up. No, they are, everyone's loving it. I'm just
- 22:43Speaker 4: I'm just joshing.
- 22:44Speaker 1: All right, this is great. Uh. Sunday morning, we're having breakfast,
- 22:50Speaker 1: kind of a late late brunchy breakfast the family, and
- 22:53Speaker 1: someone looks over and it's like, holy, look at Vegas
- 22:56Speaker 1: his leg and on his like lower Uh. I forget
- 23:00Speaker 1: which which front leg is on. I think it's his left,
- 23:02Speaker 1: but you know, maybe six or eight inches above his paw,
- 23:05Speaker 1: big old gash like two inches long, and it's kind
- 23:08Speaker 1: of spread open, like a solid inch maybe more. I'm like, yee,
- 23:13Speaker 1: you know, like that looks bad. I wondering, like, who's
- 23:16Speaker 1: gonna Who's gonna be the one that takes him to
- 23:18Speaker 1: the vet.
- 23:18Speaker 3: And just for like people are listening, you kind of
- 23:21Speaker 3: let him roam around and do his own thing.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Yeah, we don't have a fence. We don't have a
- 23:25Speaker 1: fence yard. He wears his GPS callar every single day
- 23:30Speaker 1: of his life and then that way when he's usually
- 23:33Speaker 1: he's not much of a roamer until it gets h
- 23:36Speaker 1: evening time and it cools off and then all of
- 23:38Speaker 1: a sudden he starts to roam.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I'm the same way.
- 23:43Speaker 1: And uh anyway, so it probably happened the evening before
- 23:47Speaker 1: no one noticed it, and then the next morning like, hey,
- 23:50Speaker 1: look at that. Well, all of a sudden, everybody else
- 23:52Speaker 1: has somewhere to beat. So I'm left with Mingus and
- 23:55Speaker 1: his open wound, and they're like, take care of it,
- 23:58Speaker 1: and I forget. I had to go. I'm where too,
- 24:00Speaker 1: so I didn't have that much time. But I take
- 24:03Speaker 1: a picture send it to my buddy Jake. I'm like,
- 24:05Speaker 1: what would you do right now? He's like, that looks
- 24:07Speaker 1: pretty fresh. I think you can just staple it up.
- 24:11Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, I have bought the staple gun already.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I'm prepared, sitting in my truck in case we have
- 24:16Speaker 1: a mountain lion, you know, mishap.
- 24:19Speaker 2: And it's like the first thing you need to buy
- 24:21Speaker 2: when you're a houndsman. Yeah, a GPS collar and a
- 24:25Speaker 2: staple gun.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Totally, and so I've got that. I watch a couple
- 24:29Speaker 1: of YouTube videos irrigate it with, you know, some warmed
- 24:35Speaker 1: hot sailing solution. Irrigate the hell out of it. Maybe
- 24:39Speaker 1: scrub it a little bit and uh, Stapler shut and
- 24:42Speaker 1: you're on your way. And so I did that. I
- 24:46Speaker 1: got to the oh. I later we had to meet
- 24:48Speaker 1: at a volleyball game for my oldest and I'm like
- 24:50Speaker 1: showing them pictures and telling them my story. They were incredulous.
- 24:56Speaker 1: They were like, you didn't do that. You went to
- 24:59Speaker 1: the vat. I'm like, no, no, no, I like, watch the
- 25:01Speaker 1: YouTube video on Staple of my dog up. It wasn't
- 25:03Speaker 1: that hard. And they're looking at it and they're like, well,
- 25:05Speaker 1: it looks pretty good, dad, you know. I'm like, well, like,
- 25:08Speaker 1: it wasn't that hard. But they're very much like, nice,
- 25:11Speaker 1: did you really do this? And then not Later though,
- 25:15Speaker 1: I caught a lot of scrutiny about like pussing a lot.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Maybe you look swollen? Are you sure you did it right? Anyways,
- 25:23Speaker 1: I felt like I should be a vet.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Sure that's great.
- 25:26Speaker 1: After doing that, I'm like, I'm.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Super glueded dog.
- 25:29Speaker 1: But not.
- 25:30Speaker 3: But staplelan like did he squirm or yelp?
- 25:33Speaker 1: He gave me like a false uh when I irrigated,
- 25:39Speaker 1: but the staples he barely flinched. Yeah, And I didn't
- 25:43Speaker 1: unesssize him.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Was it like like barbed wire kind of cutter, That's
- 25:49Speaker 3: what I'm thinking, you know, especially in that spot.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and there's plenty of barb wire on our property,
- 25:55Speaker 1: you know. So all right, thank you all for Uh,
- 25:59Speaker 1: that's the folks coming. We're halfway through. We're gonna interview
- 26:08Speaker 1: Rich Throning now. In this interview, this first one is
- 26:11Speaker 1: brought to you by none other than Mountain Ops. Whether
- 26:15Speaker 1: you're training for the mountain or just trying to feel
- 26:18Speaker 1: your best every single day, Mountain Ops has your back.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Speaking of performance, we're joined today by one of the
- 26:28Speaker 1: most accomplished athletes in the world of fitness, four time
- 26:32Speaker 1: CrossFit Games champion and the man often called the fittest
- 26:35Speaker 1: on Earth. You just thought that was me, but no,
- 26:38Speaker 1: we're talking about Rich Frowning and he's here bringing that
- 26:44Speaker 1: all together in a brand new podcast called In Pursuit,
- 26:48Speaker 1: where he's exploring how the grit of competition and the
- 26:51Speaker 1: challenges of the wild connect to something deeper in all
- 26:55Speaker 1: of us. Rich, welcome to meet Eater Radio Live. How
- 26:59Speaker 1: are you?
- 27:00Speaker 8: What's up? Boys?
- 27:01Speaker 2: How we doing excellent?
- 27:02Speaker 1: We're doing great? Is it feeling Rich? You're down in Nashville?
- 27:05Speaker 9: Correct, a little bit east uh in Cookfield. But man,
- 27:09Speaker 9: it's it's it feels like fall here. Man, it's getting
- 27:12Speaker 9: me fired up. Mornings are Chris you know, hot during
- 27:14Speaker 9: the day, but it cools off pretty good at the evening.
- 27:17Speaker 8: So man, we just had Velvet Hunt this week and
- 27:18Speaker 8: I didn't actually get to go out.
- 27:19Speaker 9: I was in Texas, but seeing the pictures, man, it's
- 27:22Speaker 9: getting me fired up.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Oh man, I love to hear it. I was thought,
- 27:25Speaker 1: you're gonna tell me it's just been still hot as
- 27:27Speaker 1: balls and it's still summertime, but it sounds if you
- 27:29Speaker 1: made it.
- 27:29Speaker 9: Drop this week, and man, it's just your walk outside
- 27:32Speaker 9: expecting to just get knocked down by a wall of
- 27:35Speaker 9: humidity and there's none. It's it feels feels like fall.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Wonder lovely Rich, can you give our listeners a quick
- 27:43Speaker 1: behind the scenes peak and what inspired you to do
- 27:49Speaker 1: the in Pursuit podcast? Like, what's going on with this podcast?
- 27:53Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 27:53Speaker 9: Man, it's just a good time and it's honestly, it's
- 27:55Speaker 9: just me nerding out and listening to some specialists in
- 27:58Speaker 9: different areas. Whether it you know, we had Joel Turner
- 28:01Speaker 9: that episode just launched today. We had Kip Folks, who
- 28:05Speaker 9: runs a he's gonna outfit her up in Alaska.
- 28:08Speaker 8: For Grizzly Moose and all that.
- 28:10Speaker 9: And then Joel we've had on just talking about shot
- 28:13Speaker 9: iq stuff and the high stress stuff you're talking about
- 28:16Speaker 9: with shooting rifles we do. He does a lot with bows.
- 28:20Speaker 9: So it's just cool to talk to those guys and
- 28:21Speaker 9: pick their brains. We had a NFL guy that Zach Steeler,
- 28:25Speaker 9: that just actually signed a forty five million dollar contract
- 28:28Speaker 9: a couple of days after he left here, so you know,
- 28:31Speaker 9: we asked him for a percentage of that since we
- 28:33Speaker 9: probably helped with that. But man, it's just it's my own,
- 28:37Speaker 9: I guess pursuit for knowledge for lack of better terms
- 28:40Speaker 9: of just getting exposed to different guys and what they're
- 28:42Speaker 9: doing and in the hunting and then also just in
- 28:45Speaker 9: in sport and how we can relate that to the outdoors.
- 28:49Speaker 1: On that note, like there's just reading through sort of
- 28:53Speaker 1: the ideas behind in pursuit. There's like the grit of
- 28:56Speaker 1: mountain hunting and then how that aligns with you know,
- 28:59Speaker 1: fishy performance and the disciplines of CrossFit, Like how do
- 29:04Speaker 1: you how do you see those two? Like where's that
- 29:06Speaker 1: intersection for you? Man?
- 29:08Speaker 9: I think it's just being a well rounded ath. I mean,
- 29:11Speaker 9: you just finished one hundred mile Old race, what couple
- 29:13Speaker 9: of weeks ago.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been a month now, but still feel it best.
- 29:17Speaker 8: Yeah, I bet you're still feeling it.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Yeah, you know.
- 29:19Speaker 9: It's so with crossbit obviously, the idea is, you know,
- 29:25Speaker 9: without getting too nerdy in it, you know, you don't
- 29:28Speaker 9: want to be the strongest guy in the room. You
- 29:30Speaker 9: don't want to be the guy that has the most power,
- 29:32Speaker 9: But you also don't want to be the you know, long,
- 29:34Speaker 9: slow guy. You want to kind of be a mix
- 29:36Speaker 9: or have have some ability at each of those spots.
- 29:40Speaker 8: And so yeah, the idea is, like, man, we just
- 29:43Speaker 8: want to be.
- 29:43Speaker 9: As prepared for the mountains, preferably, you know, that's where
- 29:47Speaker 9: my heart is. We got a bunch of guys here
- 29:48Speaker 9: that are Eastern hunters, and I've in the last little
- 29:51Speaker 9: bit started doing some white tail, but my heart's still
- 29:53Speaker 9: out west as much as uh, you know, I'm stuck.
- 29:56Speaker 8: Here in Tennessee.
- 29:57Speaker 9: But you know, we're going on two l hunts and
- 30:00Speaker 9: the next couple of weeks archery, and so just being
- 30:02Speaker 9: prepared for that me personally, but also taking that and
- 30:07Speaker 9: just helping people that want to go out and be
- 30:10Speaker 9: able to go after something.
- 30:14Speaker 1: What tell me I was thinking about this? I had
- 30:16Speaker 1: some during that one hundred mile race. There are some
- 30:18Speaker 1: real low points. Oh yeah, I could probably I could
- 30:21Speaker 1: point to a couple of moments that were like what
- 30:23Speaker 1: I would describe is the hardest, And we'll get to that.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I'm actually gonna come down and visit rich and we're
- 30:28Speaker 1: gonna talk about this business. But uh, what in all
- 30:34Speaker 1: of your career of competing and CrossFit, is there a
- 30:38Speaker 1: moment that stands out to you where you're like, oh,
- 30:40Speaker 1: during this competition and this moment, I struggled and had
- 30:45Speaker 1: to get through this low point to to make it
- 30:47Speaker 1: to the other side.
- 30:49Speaker 8: Man, I probably had too many to list.
- 30:51Speaker 9: Probably the most infamous one was my first CrossFit Games
- 30:56Speaker 9: as an individual. I you know, the final event I
- 30:58Speaker 9: was leading going into the final and a rope climb
- 31:02Speaker 9: is the There was like a three part event and
- 31:04Speaker 9: the final part was a rope climb with some burpees
- 31:07Speaker 9: in there, And really didn't think anything about it until
- 31:09Speaker 9: I started getting to the rope and having done two
- 31:11Speaker 9: workouts before that, just couldn't get up the rope.
- 31:13Speaker 8: A lot of guys are using their feet.
- 31:15Speaker 9: When I was a kid, my dad told me not
- 31:16Speaker 9: to use my feet because that's for you know, use
- 31:19Speaker 9: whatever acronym you want to use, or whatever do you
- 31:21Speaker 9: want to use their I didn't know if it's PG
- 31:23Speaker 9: or PG thirteen show, and so I just never used
- 31:25Speaker 9: my feet. And so all these guys are going up
- 31:27Speaker 9: and down the rope. Well, I got up in a
- 31:29Speaker 9: couple times and fell pretty good. I think it was
- 31:32Speaker 9: about twenty feet. There's if you type in rich Frohning
- 31:35Speaker 9: falls off rope on YouTube, you're welcome. But man, yeah,
- 31:38Speaker 9: you just I ended up losing the Cross of the
- 31:40Speaker 9: Games by three points, which is three places throughout the
- 31:43Speaker 9: whole weekend.
- 31:44Speaker 8: And man, I was just in a bad spot.
- 31:46Speaker 9: And so you know, there's different things that you can
- 31:48Speaker 9: look back on, and man, I just I hate losing.
- 31:51Speaker 8: I hate being that guy that It's just I.
- 31:54Speaker 9: Was born into a family of thirty two first cousins,
- 31:57Speaker 9: twenty five of us are boys. My entire life has
- 31:59Speaker 9: been a petition and so I hate losing, I hate failure,
- 32:03Speaker 9: I hate all that.
- 32:04Speaker 8: So man, it just used it as a motivator.
- 32:06Speaker 9: In the next couple of years, I was like man,
- 32:08Speaker 9: I don't want to have that shame and you know,
- 32:10Speaker 9: huge in my faith, and so that was a that
- 32:11Speaker 9: was a big kind of a eye opener to that
- 32:13Speaker 9: of like, man, just do it for something else, do
- 32:16Speaker 9: it for something bigger than just yourself.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Awesome, it sounds like quite the fall. I'm definitely youtubing
- 32:23Speaker 1: that I ain't random yeah pulled up.
- 32:26Speaker 2: I don't know if the sounds on my computer, so
- 32:28Speaker 2: I don't want to fire it up right now, but
- 32:29Speaker 2: it's lined up all.
- 32:30Speaker 8: Right, always ready.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Rich Richie mentioned Joel Turner, kip uh uh me who
- 32:38Speaker 1: else you got that's uh that's coming on to talk
- 32:41Speaker 1: on in pursuit that you're excited about. Man, we had.
- 32:44Speaker 8: Andy Gallpin and doctor Andy Gallpin.
- 32:46Speaker 7: He's a.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:48Speaker 9: Man, that was a cool meat. You know, being a nerd,
- 32:50Speaker 9: being a fitness nerd. Uh, this is my background, is
- 32:53Speaker 9: my degree in so being able to like nerd out on.
- 32:56Speaker 8: That type of stuff was a ton of fun.
- 32:58Speaker 9: I've got another guy, Todd Anderson, which is he's become
- 33:01Speaker 9: a friend of mine.
- 33:02Speaker 8: He's really into sleep.
- 33:03Speaker 9: That'll be a ton of fun of like you know
- 33:05Speaker 9: what we think just some minor changes you can make
- 33:08Speaker 9: to improve performance, because I think one of the biggest
- 33:11Speaker 9: things in recovery is sleep. We've got a couple of
- 33:15Speaker 9: new maybe some nutrition has lined up, and athletic therapists
- 33:18Speaker 9: or an athletic trainer.
- 33:19Speaker 8: So just like you know, we all see the.
- 33:21Speaker 9: Like CrossFit style stuff or the ultra and durant stuff,
- 33:25Speaker 9: but you know, the taking care of your body when
- 33:28Speaker 9: you're not in the gym or not, you know, training
- 33:30Speaker 9: for something even outdoors.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I can tell you that was my favorite part about
- 33:34Speaker 1: running one hundred miles was the two weeks of recovery
- 33:37Speaker 1: and taking that very seriously, which basically means you just
- 33:40Speaker 1: sleep your ass off, sleep lot of naps. Is this
- 33:44Speaker 1: guy you're gonna talk to, is he a nap proponent,
- 33:46Speaker 1: because I've been hearing that some people.
- 33:49Speaker 8: We didn't really we haven't gotten into it yet. He's
- 33:51Speaker 8: coming on in the.
- 33:52Speaker 9: Next couple of weeks. Man, I can't nap. I just
- 33:56Speaker 9: my brain doesn't shut off.
- 33:57Speaker 1: During the day.
- 33:57Speaker 8: As bad as that sounds like, once I'm up, I'm up.
- 34:01Speaker 8: And so we'll see.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Man.
- 34:03Speaker 8: Now I'll ask him about naps. I'll make sure to
- 34:05Speaker 8: put that one on there. When we're on there, I'll
- 34:06Speaker 8: say johnis wants to know about naps.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Oh, definitely, yeah, because I listened to one. I think
- 34:10Speaker 1: it was actually on Gallup and Show. He was talking
- 34:12Speaker 1: to sleep researcher from the Army, and a couple of
- 34:15Speaker 1: big takeaways was one, Yeah, naps are great, don't go
- 34:19Speaker 1: over twenty minutes. And then Lebron James takes three to
- 34:22Speaker 1: four a day.
- 34:23Speaker 2: That's what I was going to say. Napping is huge
- 34:25Speaker 2: in the NBA, especially with late tip offs.
- 34:28Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, that would do it. So, yeah, you gotta
- 34:31Speaker 9: control those cortisol fluctuations.
- 34:33Speaker 1: So and I mean, you want to talk about a
- 34:35Speaker 1: crossover for ELK Cunting. If I don't get my midday
- 34:39Speaker 1: nap in on ELK Hunt, I am just I'm going
- 34:41Speaker 1: to be going.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Down hill a little reset.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I gotta get that little midday napping, all right, man.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I'll look forward to hearing some episodes. Where can we
- 34:51Speaker 1: find in pursuit.
- 34:53Speaker 9: The mediat podcast network, it's I think today we just
- 34:56Speaker 9: dropped the one with we Kip was two we weeks
- 35:00Speaker 9: ago and this today was Joel Turner.
- 35:02Speaker 8: So those will be on there on I guess the
- 35:05Speaker 8: channel that this.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Is on, so perfect we'll check them out there well,
- 35:08Speaker 1: thanks for cod joining us taking time away from your
- 35:11Speaker 1: busy day. And yeah, I look forward to hanging out
- 35:14Speaker 1: in Nashville here and I can get down there to
- 35:16Speaker 1: talk running.
- 35:17Speaker 8: Come on, boys, appreciate it all right?
- 35:19Speaker 1: Thanks? Rich?
- 35:20Speaker 2: See it?
- 35:23Speaker 1: Okay? That was Rich frowning the In Pursuit podcast. I
- 35:28Speaker 1: haven't listened yet, but I need to, especially if he's
- 35:30Speaker 1: gonna talk start talking about sleep. Man, I'm into staying
- 35:33Speaker 1: up on my sleep.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Nothing like talking about sleep.
- 35:36Speaker 1: I'm serious.
- 35:37Speaker 2: I know, I know, I'm serious, but it's also sort
- 35:40Speaker 2: of funny.
- 35:40Speaker 1: It is it is, but people like you just said,
- 35:43Speaker 1: people don't take it seriously enough. Man, you're not performing
- 35:47Speaker 1: at like.
- 35:48Speaker 2: I can't even sleep in the night time.
- 35:49Speaker 3: But yeah, oh I take my sleep very seriously.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Well, everybody does. But I feel for you because I
- 35:56Speaker 1: know a lot of not a lot, but I know
- 35:57Speaker 1: quite a few people in my life that don't have. Sorry,
- 36:00Speaker 1: guests to have a hard time.
- 36:02Speaker 2: In bed, well, in bed for hours just staring at
- 36:05Speaker 2: the walls. Get up, walk around.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Go read a book, take a cold shower, read.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Until my eyes closed on the page, and then do
- 36:13Speaker 2: that three more times and then I'm probably ready. Okay,
- 36:16Speaker 2: working through the right stuff right now, book about airplanes
- 36:20Speaker 2: and uh space travel about the astronauts. Actually right as
- 36:23Speaker 2: in w R as in r I t h r
- 36:26Speaker 2: r r I t h l r I g H
- 36:29Speaker 2: try sleep yeah, Chuck Yeager.
- 36:34Speaker 1: All right, real quick, this won't take five minutes. Moultree
- 36:38Speaker 1: Mobile Trailcam. I say that, guys because in my little
- 36:41Speaker 1: script here it says roughly how long these little bits.
- 36:44Speaker 2: It's good. We can make up some time here.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Moby Moultree Mobile Trailcam Photo Contest Round three. Okay, it's
- 36:52Speaker 1: called titled Big Bull Elk. You can go to how
- 36:57Speaker 1: to enter your photographs. You go to there can be
- 37:00Speaker 1: article I think we're dropping it today on Mediatter website
- 37:03Speaker 1: and you can submit your Big Bull Elk Trail Camp photos.
- 37:07Speaker 1: We'll pick the top four photos to showcase during next
- 37:11Speaker 1: week's show and then have the chat. So if you
- 37:15Speaker 1: come and listen next week live, you're gonna get to
- 37:17Speaker 1: actually pick the winner. The chat will do it.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Prizes are tell them what they're gonna win you, honess.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Here you go two Edge two first light Spectr Camo
- 37:27Speaker 1: addition Moultari cameras with ten watt solar power pack bundles
- 37:33Speaker 1: I can't say enough about those solar pack bundles. Man,
- 37:36Speaker 1: it makes them completely hands off. The cameras are hands off.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Now if they could now just make a function where
- 37:43Speaker 1: the solar panel usually kind of well, the one that's
- 37:45Speaker 1: attached comes out of the top. A lot of them
- 37:47Speaker 1: have separate solar panels that you just attach the cord,
- 37:50Speaker 1: which actually like better because that way you can have
- 37:52Speaker 1: the solar panel facing south camera facing north. But what
- 37:55Speaker 1: they need now is another thing where a set of
- 37:58Speaker 1: like big clippers comes out of the bottom. Because what
- 38:01Speaker 1: happens to me is I set them up in the spring,
- 38:03Speaker 1: nothing's growing, and then right about now, all of a sudden,
- 38:07Speaker 1: it's like this in front of my cameras. And most
- 38:09Speaker 1: you just needs to have a little thing that comes
- 38:11Speaker 1: out and just and can reach out about three feet and.
- 38:14Speaker 3: If the dowse the stuff around the camera with some herbicide.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Listen that has thought that thought has crossed my mind,
- 38:23Speaker 1: All right.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Well then I get a drone that'll just hang them
- 38:26Speaker 2: for you. Be set.
- 38:28Speaker 1: There's three prizes. It doesn't say if there's like a
- 38:31Speaker 1: number one, number two, number three prize. They're all good prizes.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Prize number two, two hundred and fifty dollars gift card
- 38:36Speaker 1: to the Meat Eater store, a two hundred and fifty
- 38:40Speaker 1: dollars gift card to First Lights, my goodness, and prize four.
- 38:43Speaker 1: I'm sorry, there's four prizes. A case knives, Brent Reeves
- 38:48Speaker 1: signature mini trapper knife.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Yeah it donet the winner.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Just get all that stuff that seems excessive.
- 38:55Speaker 3: Oh maybe maybe, Phil, Have we just been picking one
- 38:59Speaker 3: winner for those, haven't we?
- 39:00Speaker 1: Damn?
- 39:01Speaker 4: Yeah, one winner gets everything?
- 39:03Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, I gotta set up some trail cameras.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Get a quick, awesome bull elk picture. My guess if
- 39:13Speaker 1: if I could just like look into the future a
- 39:15Speaker 1: little bit, h it's gonna be something with a bull
- 39:18Speaker 1: elk in a wallow.
- 39:20Speaker 3: That's a typical spot for a trail cam.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yep. And you get some water splashing, maybe a bowl
- 39:26Speaker 1: on his back pissing all over himself.
- 39:30Speaker 3: You could put it on a telephone pole outside man
- 39:32Speaker 3: with mammoth hot springs too.
- 39:34Speaker 5: And you do all right?
- 39:35Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I don't know if the park's gonna let
- 39:37Speaker 1: you put a camera.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Just keep it quiet.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Okay. Now we're on to uh answering a few questions
- 39:43Speaker 1: from the chat Phil, What do we got to that?
- 39:45Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 39:45Speaker 4: And Jannis already said so, just to reiterate, the article
- 39:47Speaker 4: is not up yet, but it will be up later today. Okay,
- 39:50Speaker 4: So yeah, keep your If you want to check back
- 39:52Speaker 4: this evening on the Mediator dot com, it should be
- 39:54Speaker 4: pretty obvious. Submit you're it's a multi trail cam.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Foot you know what is up right now? Though, Phil
- 39:59Speaker 1: is my most recent on the Hunt episode. Right went
- 40:01Speaker 1: to Wyoming to shoot a prong horn. Check that out
- 40:05Speaker 1: trophy prong horn trophy. I was going for a trophy.
- 40:09Speaker 1: I learned a lot about judging trophy prong horn on
- 40:12Speaker 1: this trip.
- 40:13Speaker 4: You guys want to watch Rich fall off of a rope?
- 40:15Speaker 1: Yes?
- 40:15Speaker 2: Please?
- 40:15Speaker 4: Okay I felt bad doing it when he was on
- 40:18Speaker 4: the line.
- 40:19Speaker 1: But here's Rich going up. He's only using his arms.
- 40:22Speaker 3: Oh dang, Rich, that's a that could have been a
- 40:27Speaker 3: broken tailbad there. And that Spartan race me and Hayden did.
- 40:32Speaker 3: We watched a guy you gotta swing from ring to ring,
- 40:35Speaker 3: you know, yeah, and a big muscular guy like Rich
- 40:39Speaker 3: made the big long swing but didn't hold on, landed
- 40:42Speaker 3: a flat on his back and broke his collar bone
- 40:44Speaker 3: like we heard it snap?
- 40:47Speaker 1: How did you do on those rings?
- 40:49Speaker 3: I did alright, because I'm like skinny and spry.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Oh wait, till right, right, right right? Yeah, dang, that
- 40:58Speaker 1: looks rough and he's still took third place.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Have you ever broken your tailbone?
- 41:02Speaker 1: No, it's not fun. I mean I've had it. Would
- 41:05Speaker 1: you do it? Have you done it?
- 41:06Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 41:07Speaker 2: There a story playing basketball post the guy up he
- 41:10Speaker 2: thought it'd be funny to just wap with a knee.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh that did it?
- 41:15Speaker 2: Yeah, no kidding, Well it was awful, awful your.
- 41:19Speaker 3: Cosicks, Randall, can't take those hard fouls.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Nope.
- 41:24Speaker 1: I like the fact that you're a you're a b
- 41:26Speaker 1: ball player. I'm gonna get my hoop down here from
- 41:30Speaker 1: my house.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and then in the winter time we should
- 41:33Speaker 2: set up in my barn and Max.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's a good idea. I know that we
- 41:37Speaker 1: have Max, you and uh Nick Tapia. All right, let's
- 41:45Speaker 1: get a question in Phil.
- 41:46Speaker 4: Sure, it's good a question and uh let's see here,
- 41:51Speaker 4: Trey Woods is asking for some cruise score predictions for
- 41:55Speaker 4: the tailgate Tour, something like college Game Day. Randall, you
- 41:57Speaker 4: got any predictions predictions you want to you want to share,
- 42:00Speaker 4: at least for the game you're going to.
- 42:02Speaker 2: I guess what I'm thinking is I just don't want
- 42:06Speaker 2: them to lose at home first game of the season.
- 42:11Speaker 2: It's gonna be really coming as defending national champions. I mean,
- 42:16Speaker 2: there's just there's a lot of pressure in arch Manning.
- 42:19Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know. I just it's gonna be
- 42:22Speaker 2: a bad scene if they lose. So I'm thinking positive thoughts,
- 42:25Speaker 2: but as you can tell, I'm also thinking negative thoughts.
- 42:27Speaker 1: So well. They still have that literal highlight reel of
- 42:32Speaker 1: a wide Jeremiah Smith. Yeah, that guy is incredible Jeremiah Smith.
- 42:36Speaker 2: For Heisman.
- 42:37Speaker 4: That was actually one of the questions here, Randall, was
- 42:40Speaker 4: your predictions for Heisman this year?
- 42:41Speaker 2: You want to know some Heisman trivia?
- 42:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:44Speaker 2: The figure on the statue, uh huh. That's Jay Berwanger.
- 42:49Speaker 2: It's a quarterback at the University of Chicago back when
- 42:52Speaker 2: we were at Powerhouse.
- 42:54Speaker 3: Mhmm. Interesting.
- 42:56Speaker 1: I like that, Randall. You're full of stuff like that. Yeah.
- 42:58Speaker 4: Another one Phil that was from Trey John asks Jannis,
- 43:02Speaker 4: have you seen anyone doing a one hundred k barefoot?
- 43:05Speaker 1: Nope, I haven't.
- 43:07Speaker 4: Is that a thing that happens?
- 43:09Speaker 1: I think maybe a little bit there's there's some of
- 43:13Speaker 1: that barefoot or like super minimalist shoe stuff going on.
- 43:18Speaker 1: The thing you see sometimes there's these running sandals that
- 43:24Speaker 1: they are they're very minimalists. I mean, I mean the
- 43:26Speaker 1: soul is flat and it's like a quarter inch and
- 43:29Speaker 1: then there's just a couple straps going over the foot
- 43:32Speaker 1: to hold the soul underneath you. That's the closest I've
- 43:35Speaker 1: seen to anybody doing one of these barefoot, and I
- 43:39Speaker 1: don't know if you if you train in it, they
- 43:41Speaker 1: probably finish.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Sorry I misspoke. Jay Burwanger with a halfback.
- 43:48Speaker 4: Uh hm, I'm disappointed. Nathan asks crew, what are some
- 43:53Speaker 4: planed slash traditions that you have on Labor Day weekend?
- 43:57Speaker 4: If you have any. Do you guys have any sort
- 43:58Speaker 4: of go to activities or stuff to do with the.
- 44:01Speaker 3: Family, camping, fishing and or hunting.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Yeah, camping. It's a great camping weekend, it is. It
- 44:10Speaker 2: is just send off to the summer before.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Yeah, we're gonna do a little barbecue with the neighbors.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Catch up. We haven't seen him in a little while.
- 44:20Speaker 1: My oldest daughter just made Pat on her back again
- 44:23Speaker 1: twice in one episode. She made the Bosman high school
- 44:28Speaker 1: freshman volleyball team, the A team, and I've now realized
- 44:33Speaker 1: that it's a fall sport and it's going to affect
- 44:37Speaker 1: our fall activities.
- 44:38Speaker 3: Oh yeah, my son's figuring that out with the cross country.
- 44:42Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Luckily for you season, they don't. It's not gonna affect.
- 44:47Speaker 3: It's not We're good for Antelope opener and U season.
- 44:50Speaker 1: All right, all right, and those are the two big
- 44:51Speaker 1: ones for us right now. Do you want to do
- 44:54Speaker 1: another one? Phil?
- 44:55Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 44:55Speaker 4: I don't know how much has been announced or how
- 44:57Speaker 4: much we can say, but az Or King asks, when
- 45:01Speaker 4: is the Mediator crew going to do live podcast tours again?
- 45:04Speaker 2: I don't think we can say. Okay, I would say
- 45:06Speaker 2: just that right, Just keep your eyes I don't want to.
- 45:09Speaker 4: Do it open. I don't want to do I'm not
- 45:11Speaker 4: doing anything.
- 45:11Speaker 2: I'm not gonna just stay posted.
- 45:13Speaker 4: It'll hang on, keep your eyes open.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not gonna be yeah.
- 45:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know about like the I.
- 45:19Speaker 3: Don't even think you should have clicked on this question
- 45:21Speaker 3: the optimy and stay posted.
- 45:24Speaker 4: There, Brodie.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Yeah, if you like live in the southeast part of
- 45:27Speaker 1: the country, you're probably gonna be pretty excited.
- 45:31Speaker 2: I get a call from the c suite here in
- 45:33Speaker 2: a minute.
- 45:34Speaker 1: If nobody has said we can't talk about it, so
- 45:37Speaker 1: what the hell?
- 45:38Speaker 2: I just assume I can't talk about it anymore. They
- 45:40Speaker 2: tell me lines of communication around here. If they're gonna
- 45:42Speaker 2: be mad, Let's move on.
- 45:44Speaker 3: We got a lot of stuff to cover.
- 45:46Speaker 4: All right, all right, all right, Bernie says, no more questions.
- 45:49Speaker 4: All right, sorry, I guess we can do a lot.
- 45:52Speaker 2: We can do a long ending question session.
- 45:54Speaker 1: On to our next interview. Many of you know Parker
- 45:59Speaker 1: Hall from me Eater season eight episode Flathead Catfish and
- 46:03Speaker 1: Gray Squirrels, where he taught Steve how to eat sunflower
- 46:07Speaker 1: seeds properly, specifically had to build a little gravy in
- 46:11Speaker 1: the seeds. This was alongside bank poll fishing for flatheads
- 46:16Speaker 1: and squirrel hunting with his feiz Ruby. This episode is
- 46:20Speaker 1: recently released on the YouTube channel as part of season
- 46:24Speaker 1: eight being released there that started I think about a
- 46:27Speaker 1: month ago. This is the first episode in season eight.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Highly recommend you check it out.
- 46:33Speaker 3: There's a very good tutorial on how to fry fish
- 46:36Speaker 3: the right way in there too.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Yes, I still do things that I learned from Parker
- 46:42Speaker 1: on that trip. One being speaking of fried fish. Parker's
- 46:45Speaker 1: probably he's not on yet. He can't even talk. I'm
- 46:49Speaker 1: talking for him. But Parker seasons his fish before bredding it,
- 46:54Speaker 1: which I think is crucial. The other day we did
- 46:56Speaker 1: a breading that had mixed sizes of the breading itself,
- 47:00Speaker 1: like there was some panco, there was some flowers, some cornstarch.
- 47:03Speaker 1: As the breading got used up, the big stuff the
- 47:07Speaker 1: panco was gone. It was turning into a just flour
- 47:10Speaker 1: and corn starts breading, which is why, if you think
- 47:13Speaker 1: about it, salt and pepper are similarly sized, right, They're fine.
- 47:16Speaker 1: And that's why Parker does all seasons of fish first,
- 47:19Speaker 1: because if it's in your breading, that salt and pepper
- 47:22Speaker 1: are not getting onto the fish as much as whatever
- 47:25Speaker 1: bigger chunks of breading you have on there. Say it's
- 47:28Speaker 1: corn meal or whatever, right, So if you want even seasoning,
- 47:31Speaker 1: you gotta season the fish first. Thanks Parker. All right,
- 47:35Speaker 1: let's see.
- 47:38Speaker 4: Watching this cannot say anything. Okay, let's see, we don't
- 47:43Speaker 4: even We don't even need to bring him on anymore.
- 47:45Speaker 4: I think you just covered it.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Parker and I stay in touch via text, usually sending
- 47:53Speaker 1: each other videos of our dogs barking on trail or
- 47:56Speaker 1: treat if you know you know. Work is the state
- 48:01Speaker 1: director of the USDA's Wildlife Services Florida program, and his
- 48:05Speaker 1: main focus is alleviating damages associated with ferreal swan. This
- 48:10Speaker 1: includes protection of agriculture, natural resources, threatened and endangered species,
- 48:15Speaker 1: and disease monitoring. Today he's joining us while he's taking
- 48:19Speaker 1: DNA samples from chapped hogs that are threatening sea turtles?
- 48:25Speaker 1: Did you know that that could be a thing? No,
- 48:27Speaker 1: Welcome to the show, Parker. Oh I can't hear him.
- 48:34Speaker 4: I don't think it's my fun. I got your mic on, Parker.
- 48:40Speaker 5: How about now.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Led it. Did you like that introduction, Parker?
- 48:49Speaker 5: That was great.
- 48:49Speaker 7: That was perfect introduction and also perfect description of why
- 48:53Speaker 7: you should bread, I mean season your fish first.
- 48:56Speaker 5: Excellent, excellent description. Perfect o.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Kay I see that you have a it looks to
- 49:03Speaker 1: be either a dead or a neesssized pig in front
- 49:06Speaker 1: of you. What are you doing with that thing?
- 49:10Speaker 5: So thank you for the introduction and good overview.
- 49:14Speaker 7: This this is a dead pig, not an esecized So
- 49:19Speaker 7: something we do in the state is protect, like you said, agriculture,
- 49:23Speaker 7: threatened dangerous species, sea turtles, people, who are trying to
- 49:28Speaker 7: manage their land and being overrun with pigs. We are
- 49:32Speaker 7: not actually doing sea trouble protection day, although we do
- 49:34Speaker 7: it all over the state. This is a land manager
- 49:36Speaker 7: that's trying to manage here in turkeys and warm seasoned
- 49:39Speaker 7: grasses and all those kind of things. So we had
- 49:42Speaker 7: a group of pigs captured today, and part of what
- 49:45Speaker 7: we do with USDA Wildlife Services is also monitor for diseases.
- 49:50Speaker 7: There's a number of diseases that we take samples we
- 49:52Speaker 7: take and we look at, including pseudo rabies, brucellosis, classical
- 49:56Speaker 7: swine fever, African swine fever, we look some of the
- 50:00Speaker 7: flu viruses HPAI, all sorts of things. So as part
- 50:05Speaker 7: of that, all the pigs that we capture we do
- 50:07Speaker 7: take samples of them. And I was just going to
- 50:09Speaker 7: kind of go through that today and show you guys
- 50:12Speaker 7: what we take and then if there's any questions you
- 50:14Speaker 7: have about what we're looking for, why we're looking.
- 50:16Speaker 1: For it, that'd be perfect, all right, So move on,
- 50:19Speaker 1: all right.
- 50:19Speaker 5: So we have to do is make sure we put
- 50:24Speaker 5: on our ppe. It's kind of.
- 50:29Speaker 7: It's good to wear ppe when you're taking samples and
- 50:31Speaker 7: dealing with fero swine, and most of you guys know.
- 50:32Speaker 7: And one thing that we deal with in the Southeast,
- 50:36Speaker 7: particular with fero swine to an extent, is sudor rabies
- 50:40Speaker 7: and brucellosis. So sudor rabies is not a zoonotic disease,
- 50:46Speaker 7: meaning we can't people can't get it, but brucellosis you can.
- 50:50Speaker 7: And for those of you that are cleaning feral swine
- 50:52Speaker 7: and those things that the brucellosis kind of hangs out
- 50:55Speaker 7: in the reproductive tract and the lactating areas and those
- 50:59Speaker 7: kind of things, it's always a good idea to use
- 51:01Speaker 7: use some protection when you're when you're cleaning ferris wine,
- 51:05Speaker 7: if you're if you're gonna consume them, and all these
- 51:07Speaker 7: diseases that we're talking about, some of them could be
- 51:10Speaker 7: transferred to people, some can't, but it's they're all all
- 51:14Speaker 7: killed if you cook it to.
- 51:16Speaker 5: A proper temperature. So something The first thing I'm gona
- 51:20Speaker 5: do is gonna take some blood.
- 51:21Speaker 7: Hopefully this animal has been dead for some time, so
- 51:23Speaker 7: hopefully it's not convealed too much, so pressure's on. What
- 51:27Speaker 7: I'm doing is trying to make a heart stick and
- 51:31Speaker 7: going in the top of the heart and then that
- 51:41Speaker 7: goes into a vial and these these vals are pressureised
- 51:47Speaker 7: as you could see. All right, that's this goes into
- 51:49Speaker 7: my collection kit. Then I'll take a couple more samples.
- 51:54Speaker 7: This next sample, I'll just get a little drop of
- 51:57Speaker 7: blood and put it on a on a Q tip
- 52:03Speaker 7: and then that goes in some media which I cannot open.
- 52:09Speaker 7: Get m Q tip out.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Hey Parker, if you've got a helper there, would you
- 52:14Speaker 1: mind asking them just to angle that camera just up
- 52:17Speaker 1: just the hair. We're mostly looking at the bottom half
- 52:20Speaker 1: of your faith.
- 52:22Speaker 5: Okay, how's that there?
- 52:28Speaker 9: We go?
- 52:29Speaker 1: Perfect better?
- 52:30Speaker 5: Okay, good, all right? And this this goes into media.
- 52:34Speaker 7: And this, this one particular, is looking for a foreign
- 52:38Speaker 7: animal's eve African swine fever. We don't we do not
- 52:41Speaker 7: have that in in the United States, but it's in
- 52:45Speaker 7: Haiti and and down that those type of areas. It's
- 52:47Speaker 7: in Africa. It's pretty bad. We don't want it in
- 52:50Speaker 7: in feral swine in the United States. And the reason
- 52:53Speaker 7: we look for a lot of these diseases and feral
- 52:56Speaker 7: swine is for protection of our domestics. So some of
- 53:00Speaker 7: them we used to have we've eradicated and we're trying
- 53:03Speaker 7: to keep them out. The feral swine all over the
- 53:06Speaker 7: country can act as a reservoir, right, so if a
- 53:08Speaker 7: disease gets in those wild population, it's much more difficult to.
- 53:12Speaker 5: Get rid of or treat or do whatever you need
- 53:14Speaker 5: to do.
- 53:15Speaker 7: The ones that are in captivity and the ones we
- 53:16Speaker 7: use are for food source, we could treat those animals
- 53:20Speaker 7: and kind of stamp out diseases. So it's really bad
- 53:22Speaker 7: if they get in the in the in the wild.
- 53:26Speaker 7: Try to keep them, you know, try to keep monitoring
- 53:28Speaker 7: and if we see something, then we can take proper
- 53:30Speaker 7: precautions and talk with our state ag and our state
- 53:34Speaker 7: wildlife agencies and then they can take the steps that
- 53:36Speaker 7: they're they're going to do.
- 53:37Speaker 5: So got that one, and the last sample I'll take
- 53:41Speaker 5: off of this animal is DNA genetic sample. That's just
- 53:49Speaker 5: an air clip. We take that and put that into
- 53:55Speaker 5: this media and then that scent.
- 53:57Speaker 7: And what we're trying to do in us A is
- 54:01Speaker 7: get a map of feral swine all over the all
- 54:05Speaker 7: over the continental in.
- 54:05Speaker 5: The United States, to see movements, to see.
- 54:08Speaker 7: If animals came from one area been relocated to another area,
- 54:13Speaker 7: Try to stop translocation, try to see natural movements and
- 54:16Speaker 7: how they're doing.
- 54:17Speaker 5: Pigger pigs are.
- 54:18Speaker 7: Really taken off all over the country and we're learning
- 54:21Speaker 7: a lot of valuable information using this genetic technique.
- 54:28Speaker 5: So those are the three main samples that we would get.
- 54:32Speaker 7: That all goes onto a data sheet and you can
- 54:36Speaker 7: notice they have these bar codes, so when we send
- 54:38Speaker 7: that in, the bar code matches with the vile scan
- 54:41Speaker 7: scan scan and goes into you know, the list. And
- 54:44Speaker 7: then all of our exile Excel spreadsheets get sent to
- 54:48Speaker 7: us and people go through those and take them, take
- 54:50Speaker 7: a look and see what our prevalence prevalences are. Like
- 54:53Speaker 7: I said, mostly in the southeast sud AB's brucellosis is
- 54:56Speaker 7: the ones we have and along with trip trick and
- 55:00Speaker 7: osis leftoh those those types of things. We also we
- 55:04Speaker 7: also look and when we first get the animal, we
- 55:08Speaker 7: just kind of go over it and see if there's
- 55:09Speaker 7: any lesions or anything that look that's looking abnormal. And
- 55:12Speaker 7: if there there are something we see some blistering, some
- 55:15Speaker 7: sluffing of the hoofs, then we contact our our state
- 55:19Speaker 7: veterinarians and maybe get them involved to see if there's
- 55:22Speaker 7: something that that you know, was on the landscape that
- 55:24Speaker 7: we haven't seen or something we don't want.
- 55:26Speaker 3: Hey, Parker, like what percentage of the pigs you're examining
- 55:33Speaker 3: have one of these diseases? Like can you make a
- 55:35Speaker 3: ballpark on that?
- 55:38Speaker 5: Actually know the answer to that? Oh about if I
- 55:42Speaker 5: believe it or not?
- 55:44Speaker 7: About twenty five percent of the pigs that we have
- 55:47Speaker 7: in Florida are positive for pseudo RABS.
- 55:51Speaker 5: Now let me say that's that's not not it so
- 55:54Speaker 5: people can't get it.
- 55:55Speaker 7: But it's fatal in dogs and some other animals and
- 55:58Speaker 7: a little to a lesser extent brucellosis, which is about
- 56:01Speaker 7: fifteen percent or so, so it isn't.
- 56:07Speaker 1: I have lots of questions, but if you guys have some,
- 56:09Speaker 1: please go.
- 56:10Speaker 2: I don't have a question. I just wanted to say
- 56:12Speaker 2: that had I known you were waiting with a dead
- 56:15Speaker 2: hog for us, I would have insisted that we interview
- 56:17Speaker 2: you first, so you'dn't have to sit there with your
- 56:20Speaker 2: dead hog and your ppe for forty five minutes. But
- 56:23Speaker 2: appreciate you having your own Parker.
- 56:26Speaker 1: You met a world. You mentioned the translocation and that
- 56:32Speaker 1: your guys are kind of keeping an eye on that.
- 56:34Speaker 1: I'm assuming that that's being done by humans and that
- 56:39Speaker 1: it's probably being done by hunters that want to hunt
- 56:43Speaker 1: berreal swine in their area. Is that true? Is that
- 56:46Speaker 1: what you guys are fighting a little bit.
- 56:49Speaker 7: Yeah, that's what we find. So USDA is non regulatory.
- 56:53Speaker 7: But if we have a new population show up where
- 56:56Speaker 7: they've never been before in the middle of the country,
- 56:59Speaker 7: we're able to some of those and then we work
- 57:02Speaker 7: with our state game and fish agencies. I feel like
- 57:04Speaker 7: these came from you know, we're in South Dakota and
- 57:08Speaker 7: these genetically go back to Orlando or whatever that area.
- 57:11Speaker 7: So there's some valuable information that's that's being gained there,
- 57:15Speaker 7: and we can tell that there's certain areas in the
- 57:18Speaker 7: country where a lot of pigs are coming from. And
- 57:21Speaker 7: it's it's pretty neat stuff to be able to see
- 57:23Speaker 7: where those hogs are being moved from and where to.
- 57:25Speaker 5: So yes, can you right?
- 57:29Speaker 1: I was just going to say, can you just tell
- 57:30Speaker 1: us just quickly as we can spread the message of
- 57:33Speaker 1: why translocating pigs is a bad idea if you don't know.
- 57:40Speaker 7: Well, other than the disease issues I've talked about and
- 57:43Speaker 7: all of the P and E species, agriculture, uh, you know,
- 57:47Speaker 7: destruction in the woods, competing with deer in turkeys, there
- 57:51Speaker 7: are non native invasive species, so it's just like any
- 57:55Speaker 7: other non native invasive species. They don't belong here, they
- 57:58Speaker 7: didn't involve on the landscape, and they compete with all
- 58:00Speaker 7: of our native animals and give our agricultural community a
- 58:06Speaker 7: pretty big headache.
- 58:10Speaker 1: I love Parker's job. Parker, you love your job, Love
- 58:13Speaker 1: my job? How would you I think there's there's got
- 58:17Speaker 1: to be some kids out there listening, some young people,
- 58:20Speaker 1: maybe some old people that want to change their career.
- 58:22Speaker 1: If someone wanted to get into doing like what you
- 58:25Speaker 1: get to do on a daily basis, was just every
- 58:26Speaker 1: time we talk to you, I'm like, man, that sounds
- 58:28Speaker 1: like fun. What Parker's doing, Like what do they need
- 58:31Speaker 1: to do in school? And then what do they need
- 58:33Speaker 1: to do after school sort of to get the experience
- 58:35Speaker 1: to get in that line of work.
- 58:39Speaker 5: And thank you for asking that question.
- 58:41Speaker 7: We're kind of a smaller agency in wildlife services, so
- 58:45Speaker 7: we do have, believe it or not, trouble getting applicants sometimes.
- 58:48Speaker 5: So we have different levels of.
- 58:52Speaker 7: So technicians, you know, they're they can come to work
- 58:55Speaker 7: with wildlife Services with no college degree. They need some
- 58:58Speaker 7: experience in the outdoor trapping, you know, animal damage kind
- 59:04Speaker 7: of stuff, any of those types of things. They can
- 59:07Speaker 7: come to work in those jobs. Those employees are the
- 59:10Speaker 7: backbone of wildlife services. They do all the work and
- 59:13Speaker 7: we get all the credit. Just like this trap behind
- 59:17Speaker 7: me in these feros wine that were trapped, I didn't
- 59:20Speaker 7: do it. I was too busy doing spreadsheets. One of
- 59:23Speaker 7: my good technicians did it. And so those people are
- 59:26Speaker 7: out there and it's a great job. A lot of
- 59:29Speaker 7: our jobs are posted on USA Jobs. That's the government website.
- 59:32Speaker 7: You can also look up your Each wildlife services state
- 59:36Speaker 7: has a web page. You can go and call the
- 59:38Speaker 7: state director or call the district supervisor. Ask around in
- 59:41Speaker 7: the state. They know as you move up you do
- 59:44Speaker 7: need a college degree, like a four year degree in
- 59:47Speaker 7: some sort of natural resources, biology, wildlife, all those sorts
- 59:52Speaker 7: of things, and that gets you up to that biologist level.
- 59:55Speaker 7: And then after you get to that you can work
- 59:58Speaker 7: work your way up. But the crux and the heart
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: and soul is is our technicians. You know, are are
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: people who are in the woods making a difference.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Yeah, were those pigs pretty easy to trap or were
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: these some of those difficult pigs that you've talked about
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: in the past with us.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: No, these were these ones are pretty easy.
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: These these haven't been messed with a whole lot, so
- 1:00:19Speaker 7: they weren't too difficult.
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: And some of them get super hard.
- 1:00:22Speaker 7: And you know, we're talking about a little earlier protecting
- 1:00:26Speaker 7: UH sea turtle nests and that's a big thing that
- 1:00:29Speaker 7: that we do. And some of those guys get squirrely
- 1:00:31Speaker 7: because we chase them, We chase them pretty hard. They'll
- 1:00:34Speaker 7: get out, you know, Florida being what a deal. We
- 1:00:36Speaker 7: have so much coastline and so many nesting sea turtles
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: and ferrel swine are and high populations here, So those
- 1:00:43Speaker 7: pigs will get out on the beach and just dig
- 1:00:45Speaker 7: up turtle nests after turtle nests, after turtle nests, and
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: some of those can get can get kind of squirrely
- 1:00:50Speaker 7: to get to.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: If I had known as a younger person that wildlife
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: tech also included trapping and possibly hunting these animals, I
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: could be on a completely different career path.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: Not too late, honest, all.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: Right, thanks thanks for that, Parker. I hope that you
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: actually get some people that call you up interested and
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: possibly working UH for that agency. Now, before I invited
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: Parker to come on this show. He had text me
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: and said, hey, man, what you guys should do one
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: time on one of your podcast thingies. That's the term
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: you use, is that you guys should name your top
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: three favorite sounds from the woods. And he had already
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: at that time. At that moment, he sent me the
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: list his top three favorite ones, along with the video
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: where you could hear one of the sounds that he said, Now, Parker,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: do you want to tell me what your do you
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: remember what your three are that you that you sent
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: to me in text?
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: I do remember. I do remember.
- 1:01:52Speaker 7: Well, I think I remember my three because they don't
- 1:01:54Speaker 7: really change. But before we get to the three, I
- 1:01:58Speaker 7: think it's super important to point out please that we
- 1:02:02Speaker 7: do in building up in the outdoors. We go through
- 1:02:07Speaker 7: a lot of preparation, a lot of things and getting
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: already in the excitement and then all of a sudden
- 1:02:12Speaker 7: you're there. But when you hear a sound, you know
- 1:02:16Speaker 7: it's all come to fruition, something's about to happen. And
- 1:02:19Speaker 7: so I started thinking about that, and I was like, man,
- 1:02:22Speaker 7: sound is such an important thing, you know, when you're
- 1:02:25Speaker 7: when you're outside, you know, recreating, hunting, fishing, doing all
- 1:02:29Speaker 7: those sorts of things.
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: So I do know my three.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: All right, Well, I'm gonna let you start then, and
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: I want you to start with the the number number three,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: and then go to two and then go to the
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: top one.
- 1:02:42Speaker 7: Okay, number three for me is probably a tree dog.
- 1:02:49Speaker 7: And I love the sound of a tree dog. You know,
- 1:02:53Speaker 7: I have Ruby, and you have your your good blue dog, who,
- 1:02:56Speaker 7: by the way, has a beautiful voice and it echoes
- 1:02:59Speaker 7: out through them mouth man.
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: I can't get enough of it. I show it to somebody, like,
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: listen to this doll. I love it. And you know
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: you're you're running the track, run the track, run track,
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: and then that changes that chop.
- 1:03:15Speaker 7: Man.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: You know something's about to happen. So I really love
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: that part.
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: Oh yeah, what.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Beautiful Phil? Do you also have Parker's Ruby? All right, Parker,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: what's your number two favorite sound in the woods or
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: the outdoors?
- 1:03:50Speaker 7: My number two sound is a drag singing just when
- 1:03:53Speaker 7: you hook up to the fish in that draft. You
- 1:03:58Speaker 7: know better that you know it's it's just something that
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: that gets your heart going. You know something good is
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: about to happen.
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: So that's number two.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: Okay, we're gonna play it right now, that's what I'm yeah. Last, Paul,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: we got to fish similar water to what Parker is
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: fishing there on the coast at Florida. We were on
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: the coast of Louisiana and I'm assuming that was a
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: redfish in that video, and uh, we got to experience
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: a lot of that. And you can't help but giggle,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: like when that is happening and that reel is going
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: backwards and making that sound singing, you just can't help
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: but giggle. I mean, it is just one of the best,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: all right, number one sound in the Turkey Woods, Parker.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: Then the best sound now, oh sorry, in the woods
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: I meant to say in the.
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: Woods is when you you are hunting a turkey and
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: you've been working in for some time and all's quiet,
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: and you in the game.
- 1:05:07Speaker 7: You know he's coming, but you don't know where he's
- 1:05:09Speaker 7: gobbled last about twenty minutes ago, and you're just frozen,
- 1:05:13Speaker 7: and all of a sudden, you hear that drum and
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: you on top of you, buddy, and I'm telling you,
- 1:05:22Speaker 7: it gets your heart pumping so fast you freeze rock
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: solid and you hear it again.
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: That's the best sound in the woods, if you ask
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: me beautiful.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: Now, for those of you, a turkey drumming the spit
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: you can kind of catch on camera. But that sound
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: of the drum itself, it's one of those sounds that is,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: for whatever reason, a microphone has a hard time picking
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: up that hum.
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: It's so low frequency, right, And like new Turkey Hunters,
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: I think here that like it doesn't even register with that.
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: Like I've tried to point it out to people in there,
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: like what are you I don't hear anything?
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: You know, you guys want to go next? Or do
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: you want me to go?
- 1:06:07Speaker 9: Go?
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: All right, I'm gonna I'm gonna speed mine up a
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: little bit. We already heard my number third. Number three
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: was Mingus barking Treed. We already heard Mingus number two.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: This is also a video I sent to Parker. I
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: was really thinking about, like what makes me happy when
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I hear sound? And I was thinking, man, when I
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: drop in some fish or some turkey nuggets into some
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: oil and that and that oil just is crackling away.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: Oh yeah, ah, that is a good sound. And like
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Parker said, you know something's good. It's about to happen.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: You're gonna about to put that stuff in your mouth that.
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: Changes a little too, like when you first throw it
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: in versus when it's ready.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good. That's a good point. That's a good point,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: all right, number one. And I will say, man, there's
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: a lot of good sounds out there, but this is
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: what came to mind in the last twenty four hours
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: I was putting some effort into making this come together.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Is a deer walking through the woods, crunching leaves underfoot,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: specifically a heavy deer in oak leaves. I don't were
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: you able to pull anything like that up, Phil.
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: No, because this is literally the first time I'm hearing
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: out this.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Okay, but you all, if you're a deer hunter out there, Randall, Brody,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: you guys have both been there Pennsylvania, Ohio. It's like
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: another sound that you don't really see it before it happens.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: It's like a lot of times for me when I'm
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: in a tree stand, that's what tips me off to
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: the presence. And somehow, I don't know how, but I
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: feel like I'm getting to the point where I can
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: tell the difference between one hundred and twenty pound doer
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: and one hundred and seventy five to two hundred plus
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: pound buck, like I couldn't do that.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: It's been so long since I sat in a tree
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: stand that as you're describing this, all I can think
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: about is how similar squirrels sound to deer in my
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: in my memory.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: Yes, And the moment you think you got that figured out,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: you're like, it's a squirrel. You look over there and
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: there's the buck you've been waiting after.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: Like, how does the squirrel make that much noise?
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: But man, when I hear that sound the same thing. Man,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: it's just like you know it's about to go down.
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: You know, whether it's a dough or a buck, whatever,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: you better like you need to get into predator mode
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: and get your bow in your hand, get your release
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: clipped on, and start focusing real fast because it's it's
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: about to go down, all right, Who's next?
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: It doesn't matter, Randall?
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: You sure I can go? I brought in a prop
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: for my first sound.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: Oh, Randall's opening a breakdown rod case.
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: Brody, if you'll hold this there?
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: Sure?
- 1:08:54Speaker 8: Now?
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: Is this gonna hurt me?
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: No, ran I just need you to hold that nice.
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: Oh, I know where he is going with this.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Now we go, Randall's gotta we go.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: Picture this. You're sitting by a riverbank at night, you
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: cast your bait out, settles on the bottom nicely.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: A warm summer night with crickets.
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: A warm summer night. You click off your headlamp and
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: you crack open an ice cold beverage, and then all
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: of a sudden you hear put that by your mic,
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: and then you hear and that's how you know, old
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: mister Katatterfish has your bait. Nothing more exciting than hearing
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: that bell ring when you're when you're calfishing at night.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: Number two, picture this. It's deer season. You're with your buddy.
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: He goes one way, you go the other. You're hiking
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: five minutes, ten minutes, whatever, and you guys are the
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: only guys out there. Then all of a sudden, your
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: buddy shoots.
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: M What about the the thwap is good too.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: I was thinking specifically of when we're in Mexico and
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: we were listening on the radio and our buddy shot
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: a buck and he hit it good, but it went
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: off and we could hear him kind of scrambling like
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: I don't know if like where is he? Where is
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: he looking from looking for him? We're sitting there like
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: biting our lips and then all of a sudden you
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: hear boom, he found him. Just a gunshot where you
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: know exactly what happened. That's the best sound in the world. Actually,
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: that's number two.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: That's number two. I'm tracking. You have two great sounds
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: so far.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: Picture this. You're deer hunting in Idaho. It's four thirty.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: You got a long hike ahead of you, driving down
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: a bumpy road. You're listening to maybe a podcast, maybe
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: the met Eater podcast. Maybe you're listening to some music
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: that'll pump you up, rock and roll, hip hop, whatever
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: your thing is. You get there, you put your head
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: lamp on, you shut the car off, get outside, and
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: you close the door. Perfect silence when all that noise
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: just stops. I feel like whenever I close my truck
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: door and it's there's nothing. It's like something just washes
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: over you.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: M M. The sound of silence.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: The sound of silence, your number one, of silence, that's
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: my number that's my top three.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Good job, random, top three. I enjoyed that, Rody.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: My number three would be a grouse flushing right at
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: your feet. You got the noise phill. Yeah, that's a
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: very exciting sound. If you're a grouse center and it
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: can take you by let's take you by surprise a
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: lot of times too, and it means good things. So
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: that's a good one for me and my dog. My
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: Number two is uh a magpie called called the whisper song.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: Got that, Phil.
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: It almost sounds like they're talking a little bit when
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: they're doing that, like human talking.
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: Sometimes I'm only familiar with the whisper song by the
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: Ying Yang twins.
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: Not familiar.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: This is the whisper song.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: This one's way better than that because careless whisper, because
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: this is often out west the sound of a successful
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: big game hunt, oftentimes very soon after you shoot and
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: walk up to you know, mule, deer, elk, what have you,
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: You're gonna hear that song pretty quickly and it and
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: it goes on the whole time while you're breaking that
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: animal down because they know a big meals.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Coming so good the horizon.
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: Yeah, So that that's a sound I love. My top
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: one similar to Randall's, a little more specific. It's it's
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: when you because I think this is a very rare
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: thing to hear, which is like you get to the
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: glass and knob, you sit down and it usually takes
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: a little while to sink in and you realize that
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: is completely quiet. There's no background noise, no cars, no
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: planes flying overhead, no dogs barking, no cows moving. It's
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: it's very rare to hear. It may be a little
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: more common out here in the wide open spaces of Montana,
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: and it's tough to find, probably in Wisconsin. But like,
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: it's almost jarring when it sinks in. Oh yeah, when
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: you're you're like, oh my god, there's like no background.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: Like, no wind, noise.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: Even they're no longer panting from the hikes.
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: Yeah, you get that that rare, super still day. It's
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: it's it's the best man.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: You've always got me fired up. I was fired up
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: an hour and ten minutes ago, fifteen minutes ago, you guys.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Now with the sounds of nature the top ones, I
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: might just take the rest of the day off and
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: go fish and so I can hear real sing. Or
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: go fry some fish, or go find a spot in
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: the woods that is silent.
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: I want to go somewhere and just see if I
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: get surprised by a gunshot.
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: Everyone.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Hey Parker, thank you for joining us, Thank you for
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: bringing your work to light. Here and to share. For
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: sharing and for coming with the idea of the top
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: three favorite sounds. I'm sure we're gonna use that one again.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: It was an inspired suggestion.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: Thank you very much, so for all of you at home,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: thanks for watching and listening. We still got to do
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: more feedback. I figured Phil was just gonna cut me off.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: You are free to go, man. Thanks.
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: You can walk away from that dead hawk now, see
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: he's a good sport.
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: Hey, well, how about this be honest. I'm gonna call
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: it quick audible instead of doing questions, how don't we
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: go over? The chat had a lot of great suggestions
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: for sounds from the outdoors. Oh yeah, I haven't really
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: I haven't been reading all of them. But we can
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: just kind of, you know, play it by ear Keith says,
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: drumming of a rough grouse, the song of a red
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: winged blackbird, and the thwack of an arrow connecting like
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: Texas Smoking says, turkeys wouldn't even make his list, which
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: seems controversial.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: It seems like a hot take, Texas Smoking, I like it.
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: Wood duck as the sun comes up. It's pretty nice.
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: The first western meadow lark of spring.
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: M that's a good.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: I like sandhill cranes. Yeah, so fun.
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: Spencer Newhart says, a big buck walking through the woods
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: sounds the same as a squirrel.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: That's true, Spencer, you don't know he hunted in uh
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: North Dakota. They don't have leaves at the at the
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: deer crunch.
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: On, Andrew says, an era slicing through the air, turkey
- 1:15:56Speaker 4: gobbling in the distance, and a bullock screaming at you
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: from thirty yards away. You guys didn't hear this, Randam,
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: when you were talking about your gun shot. I played
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: a gunshot, but I didn't have I didn't have the
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: audio in the room up so but the chat heard
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: it and apparently it was timed perfectly.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: So did a job once again?
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: Did it go with my boat?
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: Did it did go?
- 1:16:16Speaker 9: It was?
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: It was this I look forward to watch. Oh, I
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: look forward to watching this on YouTube.
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: Okay, that'll be fun.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: Randall, I liked it. It was that your friend shoots.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: Spenser is arguing with you, says that they do have trees,
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: so not with leaves.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: When you when you when someone when you were like
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: with someone and they're like, I'm gonna go after that
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: deer and you're just sitting there and like you lose
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: sight of your body and you lose sight of the
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: deer and you're just waiting and then all of a
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: sudden boom, it's just like what happened? You want to know?
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: You do get There's nothing.
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: Better, Jude says, one million duck calls all at once
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: on public lands.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: No, that's not my not my job.
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: And yeah, a lot of we got a lot of
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: upland birds flushing. So yeah, thanks for thanks for sharing
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: your thoughts chat appreciate it. Yanni, you are completely off
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: camera right now.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: Oh sorry, I'm just kicking back reading along with you.
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: We could do least favorite sounds sometimes too.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: Dwell on the negative.
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: Yeah, but you know it's part of life, things going
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: wrong out.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: There, all right, So no questions today, Phil, You know
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: we're at a good time.
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: You guys. You guys don't seem very receptive to question.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: No, I'd love to hit a couple of questions. We love,
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: we got plenty of.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: The only reason that I would get finished right now
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: is for your time, Phil. I want to be respectful
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: of you.
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: That doesn't mean a lot. I didn't have breakfast and
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: it's lunchtime and I'm getting them get a little hungry. Uh,
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: let's see. Spencer is asking, he says, ask the guys
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: how the sig Range Day competition went? In parentheses? Who won?
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: Is he talking to you?
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: I don't even know what range Day competition he's talking about.
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: Oh, when we were out at the but it.
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: Was the whole crew.
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: Who did with the whole crew except for me and
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: Steve recording the audiobook?
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: Are you there, Brody?
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: Was I there?
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: Yep, we were shooting together.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: Who won? Spencer won? Good job?
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: Question?
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: What does just have to do?
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: He just wanted to talk smack. He's just sad he's
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: not here right now. He's well, that's the thing is
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: like this happens with Randall and Randall's in the chat.
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: Sometimes they're the ones fielding questions, so people just ask
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: them questions for.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: The whole show. When are we doing another live podcast tour,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: possibly at the end of this year.
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: Nate's question, which let's see at the bottom at the bottom,
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, Nate asks what it says Phil? What
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: was Randall's score on trivia if he played yesterday's game?
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: Yet he is legit I got a perfect game driving
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: into the Sorry, I mean I felt like questions one
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: through five were just gimmes for me.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: Chronograph I can't believe bro I both had the same wrong.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: Answer Great basin National Park.
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: Oh people. People in the YouTube comments Yanni were angry
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: about the about Nate's tree stand answer. They said that
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: that should have been accepted.
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: No, it shouldn't have.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: But it wasn't me to make the final calls that
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Sure was hosting. So all right, I agree with him,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: it wasn't the right answer. Let's go.
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: Let's call the show there, guys.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: You don't want to end on a good one, no, Phil.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: Saying there's no good questions left. Randall, Well, here here's
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: the thing.
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: I I I love everyone who watches this show every week.
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: If you if you're asking questions in the chat, you're
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: you're you're doing a great job. But a lot of
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: the questions are sort of like, hey, can I have
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: some tips about deer hunting? And we need to get
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: more specific with the questions.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: You know that's at there just a weird question.
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: We get a weird one, weird question Randall does doesn't
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: want to go.
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: I normally don't flag this super weird question. Okay. Freddie
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: Rick said he was late to the show because he
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: was butchering an antelope, and then he followed up with
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: what is a good use for the outside round besides
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: jerky or grind?
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: Outside round is a different term than what I know.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: Is is he talking about top round?
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: I don't know if he's talking top or bottom.
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: It's gotta be one of those two. Oftentimes. I mean
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: I just roast it.
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: They both of the rounds make good.
- 1:20:24Speaker 5: Yeah, a lot of round.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: Sticks totally if it's and what I'll do sometimes if
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: I cut one and it's a little bit chewy, the
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: next time I make that same cut, I just give
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: it a little pounding, sure, and it's fine.
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: And listen, man, I feel like people don't use enough
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: good cuts off the hind court. If you want good burger,
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: use good cuts. If all you use is shank and
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: shoulder for burger, it's not gonna be great burger.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Preach that ship, Brody. Do any of you eat your
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: wild game brains?
- 1:20:55Speaker 9: No?
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: That's from Peter.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: But they want to know why not. Peter don't want
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: to know why not?
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: A yeah, that's my answer too.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: I guess like no one's ever come to me and
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: been like, hey, this is a good idea, it's delicious.
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: You should prepare it this way, like I just you know,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: you hear of some tribes also eating some brains every
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: now and then.
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: There's also like and I don't want to be like
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: scaring like people for no reason. There's also like disease
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: concerns with eating brain some brains of some animals like
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: c w D collects in the nervous system and you
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: know brain. Remember that, wasn't there some rumor flying around
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: about eating squirrel brains one time? That's right? So yeah,
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: I just don't do it.
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: See here's an example of one I'm not sure, Like Brodie,
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: I want your take, since you're you're you're giving. You
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: pulled me back in Gabriel ass put in for my
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: first hunt in southern Indiana and drew a bow tag
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: from middle of October. It's a unit that he can't
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: get into beforehand. A scout, he has two days to hunt.
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: Any advice or points.
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: I think, y'all, this is not a question for me
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: because it's like a white tailed bow archery hunting question.
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: So I'll pass it off the honest.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: And you know I can't get into beforehand, so there's
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: no scouting and he has starting roll in.
- 1:22:29Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: Year, you know a lot of people say that October
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: is the time for afternoon hunts. Going on that notion,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: and whether that was the case or not, I would
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: spend at least the first half of the first day,
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: maybe more, maybe three quarters of that day just pounding
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: the ground and looking for sign and learning those woods
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: and trying to figure it out. I'm guessing it's a
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: sounds like it's a good tag to have if it's
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: so limited, so maybe there's not a lot of pressure.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: I think that you pounding around and trying to figure
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: it out for three quarters of a day, that just
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: then leaves you like an evening hunt and then possibly
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: you know, a morning and evening the next day. That
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: is time better spent than just going in there off
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: of a and like a little bit of not that
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: you should definitely do a whole bunch of onyx gals
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: ahead of time, but like you can't rely and don't
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: be like that's gonna be the perfect saddle. You just
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: don't know. You got to go there and look, you
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: should find out maybe call down there and see what
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: the acorn crop is like this year. Like in Wisconsin,
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: this year we have a booner crop, but find out
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: what's going on down there for feed ahead of time. That'll,
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: you know, educate on where you need to go, what
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: you need to do. But I think my number one
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: thing would do to do was just be to take
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: the time on the ground the first day and pound
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: the ground. Find the sign and you don't have to
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: find rubs and scrapes and all that. Find like some
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: good looking deer trails that look recently used, fine fresh scat.
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: I think that you're gonna be well on your way.
- 1:24:05Speaker 3: One thing I would add, even though this isn't mine
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: type of hunt, but if if this guy is talking
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: public land, I'd be looking on on X for something
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: that presents difficult access for a lot of other hunters.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: Sure got a hike over ridge.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: But the difficult access might have already been overcome or
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: been sort of presented through this draw of at tag
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: Maybe it's Indiana, so there seems like there's gonna be hunters,
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: you know, true, true, good luck.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: Gabriel's start last one, last one here that this one's
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: for randall if they could, oh h.
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: I oh, I cannot support that. As a Penn State.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: Fan, thank you all for listening and watching it home.
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: Hope you enjoyed this episode of Meat Eater Radio Live.
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: Who's hosting next week? Is it one of you?
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: I'm hosting Randall cal and Seth.
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: Hey, hey, that sounds like a banger of an episode.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: It's gonna be tune in. They're gonna choose the winner
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: of the Moultrie uh Big Big Bowl trail camera will be.
- 1:25:18Speaker 4: Choosing the winner. Okay, but you guys, you have to
- 1:25:21Speaker 4: be watching live to vote.
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: Okay, Randall's gonna present. We're gonna choose the top four.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: Randall's gonna present the top four. And to leave you

- 1:25:34Speaker 1: favorite sounds. Until next time,
