- 0:02Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast. The Patriots Training
- 0:09Speaker 1: Camp Cast is your source for all the news from
- 0:12Speaker 1: Patriots training camp. Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:18Speaker 1: have you covered? What did I miss yesterday? Now here
- 0:20Speaker 1: to review today's practice? The writers of Patriots dot com.
- 0:24Speaker 1: All right, we are back from the last Patriots training
- 0:27Speaker 1: camp practice of twenty twenty two. What's up everybody? This
- 0:29Speaker 1: is Mike do So and Evan Lazarre coming at you
- 0:31Speaker 1: Patriots dot Com and Evan second day of joint practices.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I thought overall, Patriots were maybe a little bit better.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Similar kind of end strong finished for the Patriots with
- 0:41Speaker 1: a nice big touchdown to to Hunter Henry. But overall
- 0:44Speaker 1: this kind of caps the training camp season. I think
- 0:46Speaker 1: we're all a bit happy to get on to to
- 0:48Speaker 1: real games after Friday night. But overall, what were your
- 0:51Speaker 1: big takeaways from today? I thought it was a little
- 0:53Speaker 1: bit more even between the two teams. It was pretty
- 0:55Speaker 1: clear yesterday that the Raiders controlled play and won the
- 1:00Speaker 1: day if I hate doing that with practice, but one
- 1:02Speaker 1: the day, if you will, Today it was a little
- 1:05Speaker 1: bit tougher to decide who won the day. I think
- 1:07Speaker 1: I just kind of give it a toss up. Both
- 1:08Speaker 1: teams made some plays. I think the one thing that
- 1:10Speaker 1: you saw with the Patriots offense that you do like
- 1:13Speaker 1: and has been consistent even yesterday, is when they get
- 1:16Speaker 1: into that two minute hurry up mode and it's just
- 1:19Speaker 1: Mac Jones directing traffic with him in the shotgun and
- 1:22Speaker 1: throwing the football down the field. It just seems better.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It seems a little bit more streamlined, simplified, to use
- 1:29Speaker 1: a Bill Belichick term, and it just seems like the
- 1:32Speaker 1: operation moves a little bit better. I wonder when they
- 1:35Speaker 1: hurry it up like that, And I think Mac alluded
- 1:37Speaker 1: to this when we talk to him after practice that
- 1:39Speaker 1: there's not as much thinking. You know, you're throwing the football.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You know you got to get the ball out, you
- 1:43Speaker 1: know you got to move the ball down the field,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and it's just kind of boom boom boom boom boom, right.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And I wonder if maybe some of the things that
- 1:50Speaker 1: we're seeing is overthinking and maybe getting a little bit
- 1:53Speaker 1: too much into the weeds when they get into the
- 1:56Speaker 1: middle of the field. So you like to see them
- 1:58Speaker 1: move the ball in the hurry up. You like to
- 1:59Speaker 1: see the red z own stuff that was a positive
- 2:01Speaker 1: for them today. That defensively, the pressure has been pretty
- 2:05Speaker 1: consistent on Derek Carr both days, which was a good thing.
- 2:08Speaker 1: But in particular Jalen Mills, Jonathan Jones, Miles Bryant, especially
- 2:14Speaker 1: once they got into the real eleven on elevens of practice,
- 2:16Speaker 1: I felt like it was a little bit of a
- 2:17Speaker 1: bounce back day for that trio against Davanta Adams and
- 2:21Speaker 1: Hunter Renfro and Mac Collins for the Raiders, says their
- 2:25Speaker 1: top three receivers yesterday, Clearly Davante Adams was the best
- 2:28Speaker 1: player on the field. He was still pretty dark and
- 2:30Speaker 1: good today, but it was a little bit less of
- 2:33Speaker 1: a dominance for Adams. Yeah, you know, it's it's funny
- 2:35Speaker 1: you mentioned about Mac and you know, just to digress
- 2:37Speaker 1: from a second from the training camp observations, and we
- 2:40Speaker 1: talked about this yesterday. I think that's like a caveat
- 2:42Speaker 1: to consider that the Patriots certainly know when Mac Jones
- 2:45Speaker 1: looks good and what he's comfortable doing, and you're right,
- 2:47Speaker 1: like throughout practice or you know, throughout the summer during
- 2:50Speaker 1: practice when they ran that kind of stuff that we
- 2:52Speaker 1: know Mac Jones has experienced that though we know he's good.
- 2:54Speaker 1: We've seen some RPO hints too. They look okay, and
- 2:57Speaker 1: so you know, they're not going to get into the
- 2:59Speaker 1: regular season, and can you trying to beat a dead
- 3:01Speaker 1: horse that of things that are not working, they're going
- 3:02Speaker 1: to put mac Jones in position to be successful. So
- 3:05Speaker 1: I think, for me, as I think about more and
- 3:07Speaker 1: more about this, how things are going to look in
- 3:08Speaker 1: a couple of weeks in Miami, a little bit of
- 3:10Speaker 1: optimism of just you know, hey, hopefully they're going to
- 3:12Speaker 1: lean into what they know. They certainly have some some
- 3:14Speaker 1: time to figure it out. You mentioned defensively. I thought,
- 3:16Speaker 1: Matthew Judean, you know, continues to just be in the
- 3:18Speaker 1: backfield a lot, making big plays. Hard to miss him
- 3:21Speaker 1: with a red sweatshirt on and the middle of the heat.
- 3:23Speaker 1: But of course it wasn't it wasn't as bad today.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I didn't think, uh, not not quite as blazing as
- 3:27Speaker 1: it was the first day, but just want to you know,
- 3:29Speaker 1: some housekeeping stuff. Attendance was the same, so the same
- 3:32Speaker 1: group of guys. Of course, we saw some of those
- 3:34Speaker 1: moves yesterday with Stubor and Ronnie Perkins being moved as
- 3:38Speaker 1: well as Howard Langie wasn't there again, Taekwon Thornton and
- 3:42Speaker 1: Christian Wilkerson as well. So also some injuries to kind
- 3:45Speaker 1: of talk about during camp or I don't know if
- 3:46Speaker 1: they're injuries, but just guys who you know limped off
- 3:49Speaker 1: at certain point. Damian Harris came off early. Didn't see
- 3:51Speaker 1: him come back. We saw at Nelson Aghalore and Isaiah
- 3:55Speaker 1: Win both lead practice. They came back onto the field,
- 3:57Speaker 1: didn't participate anymore, though Nelson still spoke to the media afterwards,
- 4:00Speaker 1: so that's probably a good sign. But definitely some injury
- 4:04Speaker 1: things to monitor here as we go into the last game. Yeah,
- 4:07Speaker 1: you hope that some of those things are just maybe
- 4:09Speaker 1: the heat and just kind of exhaustion overall because of
- 4:12Speaker 1: how hot it is out here camping right, something like that.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I think for Nelson in particular, it looked like maybe
- 4:18Speaker 1: that was the issue. Damian Harris did go down early.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Looked like he tweaked something in a positional drill, making
- 4:24Speaker 1: a cut. So you just hope that that isn't something
- 4:27Speaker 1: more serious for him. But I think overall the health
- 4:30Speaker 1: of the camp, they came out of this. I know
- 4:33Speaker 1: Tai Kwon is a big one right, and that's that
- 4:35Speaker 1: sort of is the buzz killed in like a big
- 4:38Speaker 1: role killer, but it just the one hanging over it.
- 4:41Speaker 1: But I think the you know, kind of relating this
- 4:43Speaker 1: to what we saw over the last two days, I'm
- 4:46Speaker 1: still waiting to see some explosive elements from the Patriots offense.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And although it was not as often necessarily as it
- 4:55Speaker 1: was yesterday for the Raiders offense, you still have those
- 4:58Speaker 1: moments where Davante Adams gets behind a defender or mac
- 5:02Speaker 1: Hollins caught a touchdown pass on Terrence Mitchell down the
- 5:05Speaker 1: field today, and they were clearly two days in a row,
- 5:09Speaker 1: the more explosive downfield passing attack. And for the Patriots
- 5:13Speaker 1: without Tai Kwon, with Nelson Agore really being the only
- 5:16Speaker 1: deep threat now on the team that's healthy, you're just
- 5:20Speaker 1: waiting to see that. Like it's great to see some
- 5:22Speaker 1: of the drives that we saw and the two minute
- 5:24Speaker 1: these meticulous you know, move the chains, dink and dunk
- 5:29Speaker 1: it down the field. And we've seen that work here
- 5:31Speaker 1: obviously in the past, so it's not to look down
- 5:34Speaker 1: on that, but you just would like to see maybe
- 5:36Speaker 1: a little bit more down the field from the starting
- 5:39Speaker 1: offense in particular. I actually thought today at times that
- 5:42Speaker 1: he had Mac had some clean pockets and had some
- 5:45Speaker 1: time to operate, and there was a lot of checkdowns,
- 5:47Speaker 1: throws into the flats, throws underneath the defense to Jacoby
- 5:51Speaker 1: Myers or the backs, and not a whole lot. I
- 5:53Speaker 1: think there was one scene pass to Hunter Henry on
- 5:56Speaker 1: that final drive that got them Yeah, that got them
- 5:59Speaker 1: down on there, which was good, right, But other than that,
- 6:02Speaker 1: it wasn't a whole lot down the field. Well, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: let's jump into I just I was the amount of
- 6:07Speaker 1: work that they got in today that that's what stood
- 6:09Speaker 1: out to me. Just eleven on eleven sessions. There wasn't
- 6:12Speaker 1: really the breakup with punt and kickoff a little bit early,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but it was essentially one on ones, maybe a session
- 6:17Speaker 1: of like with the teams working on there with their
- 6:20Speaker 1: own punt teams, and then it was just eleven on elevens.
- 6:22Speaker 1: They were in the middle of the field, they were
- 6:23Speaker 1: in the red zone, they were in situational at the end.
- 6:26Speaker 1: That's what I kind of came away with was how
- 6:29Speaker 1: many guys are going to actually play Friday night because
- 6:31Speaker 1: looking at these last two practices and especially today, they
- 6:34Speaker 1: got so much good work. And you mentioned Jacoby Myers.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I thought he was, you know, one of the stars
- 6:39Speaker 1: of practice. Came down a number of contested catches, which,
- 6:42Speaker 1: as you said, you'd like to see maybe a little
- 6:43Speaker 1: bit more explosiveness. That's you know, not as closely contested
- 6:46Speaker 1: as some of those were. But certainly Jacoby Myers was
- 6:49Speaker 1: a star today. Yeah. Yeah, two big catches in the
- 6:51Speaker 1: end zone, kind of over the shoulder balls that he
- 6:54Speaker 1: fought off, some tough, tight coverage against the first one
- 6:57Speaker 1: in particular, moreg the safety for the Raiders. He was
- 7:01Speaker 1: right on top of him and Jacoby was able to
- 7:04Speaker 1: bring in the pass. And between that play, I think
- 7:08Speaker 1: there was the second Jacoby touchdown as well, and then
- 7:10Speaker 1: Hunter Henry's touchdown to end practice. You saw some energy
- 7:14Speaker 1: from the offense and particularly from Mac Jones. A celebration,
- 7:17Speaker 1: an actual celebration by the offense. And I say that
- 7:21Speaker 1: like it's you know, we haven't seen it because we
- 7:23Speaker 1: haven't we haven't really seen. Yeah, we did, we did
- 7:28Speaker 1: it right, and I think that that's something that they
- 7:31Speaker 1: needed quite frankly. And you mentioned the workload over the
- 7:34Speaker 1: last two days. You hear Josh McDaniel's talk about it.
- 7:38Speaker 1: You hear Bill Belichick talk about it as well yesterday,
- 7:41Speaker 1: more so with McDaniel's going this morning before practice, and
- 7:45Speaker 1: a lot of what they are saying is the finish
- 7:48Speaker 1: of the play. They can control the finish of the play,
- 7:51Speaker 1: so there's no tackling to the ground, there's no hitting
- 7:54Speaker 1: the quarterbacks, and they're are a lot less potential for
- 7:59Speaker 1: in It's still football, but there's a lot less potential
- 8:02Speaker 1: for injuries. And I think that that has been why
- 8:06Speaker 1: these joint practices have really taken over training camp in
- 8:09Speaker 1: the preseason and replaced a lot of these preseason games.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I saw today that Buffalo is not even playing Josh
- 8:15Speaker 1: Allen in the third preseason game, right, And like some
- 8:19Speaker 1: of those things are going on all around in the league.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You wonder about Mac on Friday Night as well, because
- 8:24Speaker 1: he can get these live reps and these joint practices
- 8:27Speaker 1: with the red jersey on and they don't have to
- 8:29Speaker 1: worry about their starting quarterback getting hurt. But he's still
- 8:31Speaker 1: getting live reps against another team. And I think that
- 8:34Speaker 1: that's why these joint practices are just all over the league.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I mean, everybody's doing them now and it's it's interesting
- 8:40Speaker 1: though because these ones, in particular, these were closed to
- 8:44Speaker 1: the fans, So the fans watched the games, they don't
- 8:47Speaker 1: get to watch the joint practices, which is another interesting
- 8:50Speaker 1: element to it as well. Well. I mean, we were
- 8:52Speaker 1: so far away wet, we only got to watch about
- 8:53Speaker 1: a portion of it. But but let's run down the
- 8:55Speaker 1: last two periods because I think those you know, have
- 8:58Speaker 1: been strong. Certainly yesterday Josh McDaniels said today, you know, hey,
- 9:00Speaker 1: the Patriots won those last sections. Yesterday, we you know,
- 9:03Speaker 1: are talking about finishing strong, and they did finish strong.
- 9:06Speaker 1: So nice acknowledgement from from the Raiders coach there. But
- 9:09Speaker 1: you know, a little bit of a missed opportunity. I
- 9:10Speaker 1: think for the defense it was I think it put
- 9:12Speaker 1: about fifty seconds on the clock. They were about at
- 9:14Speaker 1: the forty yard line and it was essentially, you know,
- 9:17Speaker 1: try to get in from there. Uh. They forced a
- 9:19Speaker 1: couple in completions. They set up a fourth and five,
- 9:21Speaker 1: it was like whoa, you know, they might get off
- 9:22Speaker 1: the field, not even allow Then Hunter renfro struck a
- 9:25Speaker 1: gang came up with a big catch and then they
- 9:27Speaker 1: were able to convert with a touchdown. So you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: not an ideal finished. But I think, like you said
- 9:32Speaker 1: at the top, the defense showed a little bit of
- 9:34Speaker 1: fight today. Certainly the pressure from you know, Oocha and
- 9:37Speaker 1: Judeon continues to show up. I feel like they're just
- 9:39Speaker 1: they're going to be the huge keys, and of course
- 9:41Speaker 1: we knew that. And and one more guy to point out,
- 9:42Speaker 1: Christian Barmore, who I'll let you talk about Josh talking
- 9:45Speaker 1: about him, but he's he's another big piece. Yeah, Josh
- 9:47Speaker 1: talking about Dylan Parham, their rookie guard going up against
- 9:50Speaker 1: Christian Barmore and one on ones yesterday's kind of a
- 9:53Speaker 1: hey rookie, welcome to the NFL type of moment. And
- 9:56Speaker 1: I thought there was a play is actually the play
- 10:00Speaker 1: that Davante Adams caught a touchdown on Jack Jones in
- 10:03Speaker 1: a game. I think Barnmore might have a sack on
- 10:05Speaker 1: that play, or at least was right in Derek Carr's face.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And when you're in these practices, of course you have
- 10:11Speaker 1: to pull up if you're a defender. So if Barmore
- 10:14Speaker 1: comes through and lights up Derek Carr as he's throwing
- 10:17Speaker 1: the ball down the field to Davante Adams, is that
- 10:20Speaker 1: past complete, is it not? Those are the things that
- 10:22Speaker 1: are a little bit different about a game situation. So
- 10:25Speaker 1: I saw Barbmore split that double team just you know,
- 10:27Speaker 1: shot the gap right through two guys get in the
- 10:29Speaker 1: backfield Judean for two days. I thought Judan was one
- 10:33Speaker 1: of the best players on the field for the Patriots,
- 10:35Speaker 1: and he was in the backfield a ton. So that's
- 10:38Speaker 1: good to see. Uch's speed rush always tough in these
- 10:42Speaker 1: practices for opposing tackles to block josh Ucha. I would
- 10:45Speaker 1: say that for the Raiders, Hunter Renfro had a great day.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Davante Adams is always good, but Hunter Renfro is also
- 10:52Speaker 1: somebody that I think deserves a lot more pub And
- 10:55Speaker 1: Max Crosby was in the backfield a lot for the
- 10:57Speaker 1: Raiders defense. And you look at that right tackle aition
- 11:00Speaker 1: with Isaiah Winn being banged up throughout training camp. Justin
- 11:03Speaker 1: Haran got the nod today over Yadney could just and
- 11:07Speaker 1: Max Crosby had his way with poor justin a little bit.
- 11:10Speaker 1: A lot of like raising his arm. You know, that's
- 11:12Speaker 1: usually how you know in practice these are like what
- 11:13Speaker 1: are you gott into the quarterback? Usually look at the
- 11:15Speaker 1: guy he raised his hand like, hey, I did it. Yeah,
- 11:17Speaker 1: so let's go, you know, wrap up here, um with
- 11:20Speaker 1: the final drive for the Patriots, so the same kind
- 11:21Speaker 1: of situation. I'll just kind of, you know, run through
- 11:23Speaker 1: what I had you know, written down, with a little
- 11:26Speaker 1: crosser to Stevenson and Henry. Hunter Henry up the seam
- 11:31Speaker 1: a spike to stop the clock and incomplete, found Myers
- 11:34Speaker 1: again in the middle, missed Kendrick Bourne and then uh
- 11:37Speaker 1: four seconds left second and nine uh found Hunter Henry
- 11:41Speaker 1: in the back of the end zone. As you mentioned earlier,
- 11:43Speaker 1: big celebration for me. You know this this might not
- 11:46Speaker 1: actually mean anything, of course, but it was just a
- 11:49Speaker 1: nice moment to wrap up training camp, to wrap up
- 11:51Speaker 1: joint practices. You saw all the team run over and
- 11:54Speaker 1: celebrate with Hunter Henry, who you know had had to
- 11:56Speaker 1: probably an underrated strong day today as well. As I mentioned,
- 11:58Speaker 1: you know, two catches on that final drive and you
- 12:00Speaker 1: know it's all on the line. So a great finish
- 12:02Speaker 1: for the Patriots offense and a nice kind of cap
- 12:04Speaker 1: on training camp overall. Yeah. Absolutely, And you'd like to
- 12:06Speaker 1: see the seam pass in particular, because I feel like
- 12:09Speaker 1: that wasn't in the offense as much as it should
- 12:11Speaker 1: have been last year between Henry and John who Smith.
- 12:14Speaker 1: They should be able to hit some throws up the
- 12:15Speaker 1: seams to the tight ends. So it's good to see that.
- 12:18Speaker 1: And I really like to throw by Mac on the
- 12:20Speaker 1: touchdown because there was a defender between Mac and Hunter Henry,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and he put just enough touch on it to get
- 12:26Speaker 1: it over that second level and drop it into Henry,
- 12:29Speaker 1: who made a nice catch at the back of the
- 12:31Speaker 1: end zone, you know, kind of going above his head
- 12:33Speaker 1: and toe tapping in the back of the end zone.
- 12:34Speaker 1: You mentioned the celebration and get I can't. I feel
- 12:37Speaker 1: like this is maybe something we will not talk about
- 12:40Speaker 1: in two weeks and once they played Miami and it
- 12:42Speaker 1: was gonna care it won't matter whatsoever. But for how
- 12:46Speaker 1: to use his word, how frustrated Mac Jones has been
- 12:50Speaker 1: at times with how things have gone offensively, and yesterday
- 12:54Speaker 1: he was frustrated. It was visible at the end of practice.
- 12:57Speaker 1: I think it was kind of like a silver lining
- 12:59Speaker 1: that they ended act us on that touchdown drive. But
- 13:01Speaker 1: he had clear moments of frustration. I remember particularly he
- 13:05Speaker 1: threw an interception to Jayon Brown and he actually walked
- 13:08Speaker 1: off the field for a second to kind of collect
- 13:10Speaker 1: himself and then he came back to the rest of
- 13:11Speaker 1: the group today to see Mac not just you know,
- 13:15Speaker 1: running around and kind of celebrating. I think that was
- 13:18Speaker 1: something that was really good to see. Well, that'll for
- 13:21Speaker 1: us from Vegas another you know, really productive couple of days.
- 13:23Speaker 1: We'll see how the team does on Friday. This is
- 13:25Speaker 1: the last chance we got to see them, so from
- 13:28Speaker 1: there on out, it's as good as anybody's guess what
- 13:30Speaker 1: they're doing behind the scenes. So thanks for joining us.
